#I told my parents I was only getting a license as a form of id and I stand by that

fascinated by you saying you have a license but shouldn't. i would love to hear that story
Oh I love this story.
So I waited until my seventeenth birthday to take my driving test (in America you can take it at 16, I was just lazy). But my seventeenth birthday fell in May 2020. Idk in other places, but in my state, the DMV shut down for months and cancelled all driving tests from march 2020 to like September 2020. So the problem was that when the DMV reopened, they had to keep up with the tests that were already scheduled to happen on top of making sure everyone whose tests were cancelled also were able to take a test (it was promised that if your test was cancelled you would reschedule for free). So that’s keeping up with one day’s worth of tests as well as one day from the month before and before and before if you get what I’m saying.
So the genius idea at least my state came up with was quiet literally shortening the test to nothing. I remember every single aspect of the test. I am not leaving out a single second when I say this is what I did:
Put your seatbelt on
Drive forward
Stop at a stop sign
Drive forward
Have the test Procter guide me into parallel parking
Have the test Procter guide me into pulling out of parallel parking
Drive straight
Turn the car
Drive straight
Stop car
Pass the test
That was dead ass it
And I mean it in the nicest way when I tell you my brother (who I have mentioned quite a lot is autistic) had a friend who, for lack of a better way to describe him, took an actual IQ test and scored a 74. He failed his test three times prior to when he also scheduled his fourth test for May 2020.
He also passed and as far as I know still has a license
I drove sporadically from when I got my license in September 2020 until June 2021 where I was pulling out of a parking space in my school parking lot and up until this point I had been parking in a lot with three other cars because it was 2021 and our school set it up so only half the grade had the choice of coming in on certain days, so I was used to having my space. But then it was June 2021 and the entire graduating class including me had to meet and it was all jammed and when I pull out of the parking lot after the meeting I definitely can feel and hear impact made with the car next to me. There was definitely a bit of friction, but I convinced myself it wasn’t that bad. So I just drove away.
The next day I’m awoken to the news of a big ass dent in my poor father’s car and our town’s police force coming after me for a hit and run.
It wasn’t that serious it was all on camera and obviously just an accident that I didn’t know any better and paperwork was all filled out and everything was fine but now it’s been over three years and I haven’t driven since
Point is the reason I hit that car was because I did not know how to drive a car with other cars within like a five foot radius. No clue how to parallel park. Idk how to get on highways. I went once, didn’t know how to look behind me, a car beeped, I pulled into a nearby Panera, and I called my mom crying who was on vacation in florida and my brother and dad had to drive in one car so one of them could drop me off at therapy and the other could drive the car I took home.
So basically I should not have a license and it’s likely anyone who got their license in 2020 after march 2020 shouldn’t have it either

So, Armony is a US Citizen born of US Citizen parents. She was born outside of the US (in Germany), because that’s where her family was living at the time.
In terms of documentation for things like Driver’s License and passports, these US Citizens need something called a CBRA to act in the position of their Birth Certificate.
She does not currently have possession of her CBRA.
In the state of Michigan, one of the pieces of documentation to get a Driver’s License needed is:
A Birth Certificate/CBRA, or
A Current Passport or
A Michigan Enhanced ID
(The other things listed are for non-US Citizens and the paperwork they need to bring, which doesn’t apply to her.)
And it’s dumb that she couldn’t just take her Pennsylvania Driver’s License and have them verify with their records, which Pennsylvania had done with Ohio when she first got her license in the first place. Oh bureaucracy!
Unfortunately, her Passport is also expired, and unfortunately it’s been expired for more than 5 years, so we can’t just send it in to get renewed. She’d have to redo the application process completely... and you guessed it! She’d need a Birth Certificate to do that.
So, she started at the top, and tried contacting her dad to see if he had her copy. She didn’t hear back from him. So, we start looking into how to get a copy of her CBRA. We’re told that it can take up to 6 months, since she was born shortly before the new system was implemented in November 1990.
We went investigating how to get a copy of her CBRA, and she would have to send a letter with a gigantic list of information (this is in 2022, this will be important later), including her parents’ full names, dates of birth, and also city/state they were born in. She has a bit of a strained relationship with her dad, and her mother died when she was 15.
She’s able to get her mother’s city/state of birth from her obituary. She tries contacting her dad again. No answer.
Time passes. It’s now 2023. My sister is talking to me about the process, and we say about how we’re considering looking for a lawyer to explore our options about what to do when we don’t have a piece of information. Surely she can’t be the first person who didn’t have details about their parents who had to fill out this form? My sister suggests that we might want to look into hiring a Private Investigator.
Two days pass. We haven’t hired a PI yet because money is tight but we’re thinking about it. Sister calls back. Says that she doesn’t see this list of information we’re talking about - she sees a form.
We check the website. Something changed in 2023, and now it’s a simple form. The only information she needs to submit in regards to her parents are their full names and dates of birth, which she has. She has all information on the form, and it’s only a matter of getting it signed with a Notary, and a money order sent in with it.
We resolve to send this in the next time I get paid.
Today is Armony’s birthday. We are out and about, and she gets a text message. It’s her dad wishing her Happy Birthday.
Apparently he’s been busy working 12 hour shifts from 6pm to 6am.
(The last time he went awhile without contact, he’d fallen off a roof and had been in the hospital.) So we weren’t exactly sure what had been going on.
She’s going to ask him if he has a copy of her CBRA. (God I hope he does.)

Tennessee Says 77-Year-Old Navy Veteran, Who Has Lived His Entire Life In The United States, Who Was Truck Driver For Decades, Is Not An American Citizen And Cancels Driver's License, He Is No Longer Allowed To Fly On Airlines –Nashville Tennessee reporting
The 77-year-old had been driving for the last 61 years. He's had driver's licenses in New York, New Hampshire, Vermont and then eight years ago, when he moved to Tennessee, he got a license here.
But last month, Tennessee canceled O'Connor's driver's license.
"They told me I shouldn’t have had the license in the first place 'cause I couldn’t prove that I was a citizen," O'Connor explained.
"It just blows my mind," Jean O'Connor told NewsChannel 5 Investigates.
Jean is David's wife.
"I am flabbergasted. I am outraged that, at 77 years old, he is now considered a non-citizen by the country that he has lived in his whole life," Jean said.
It all started in early June when O'Connor went to the Driver Service Center in McMinn County to not only renew his driver's license but get one of the new enhanced or Real IDs.
O'Connor took his birth certificate with him. It's a Canadian birth certificate.
But.
"Your father was a U.S. citizen?" We asked O'Connor.
"He was," he told me.
And I asked, "Your mother was a U.S. citizen?"
"She was," he replied.
And since both of his parents were U.S. citizens, and you can see that right there on his birth certificate, the law stated O'Connor is a U.S. citizen, too.
His American-born parents had temporarily relocated to Canada and soon after O'Connor was born, the family moved back to the U.S.
O'Connor's wife Jean found it all especially unbelievable because her husband was able to join the U.S. Navy. He was just 17 when he enlisted. He served four years and was a sonar tech.
And if you look closely at his military discharge form, it asks if the person is a U.S. citizen. There's a box for yes and a box for no. On O'Connor's form, the "yes" box is checked.
"It says on my paperwork I am a U.S. citizen, he pointed out.
And that's not all.
I asked O'Connor, "Have you voted?"
"Every year," he told us.
He's also got a Social Security card and now that he's retired, he's getting benefits.

Poe Dameron x F!Reader (Babysitter!AU)
Summary: After graduating college and needing to have some cash in order to survive while doing an unpaid internship, Y/N decides to take up a babysitting/caretaking job. Little does she know that she ends up working for a familiar face.
Warnings: small mentions of smut, just little flashbacks really, and a ton of angst at the end
A/N: This is for @propertyofpoeandbucky Mystery Challenge! Thanks for waiting patiently, everyone! It’s been wild trying to figure out what to write but I hope this does justice. This one definitely got to me, and you’ll see why.

Booster seat? Check.
First aid kit? Check.
Snacks in case Eva Bey gets hungry? Check, check.
You nod, double-checking the inventory again before finally closing the door. Today was your first official day, and you wanted to be prepared. You had to prove to Poe that you were the best choice.
Heading into the driver’s seat, you buckle up before you put in the address for Eva Bey’s school, and drive off. As you grip the steering wheel, your mind only wandered off. Was this a mistake? Did Poe make the wrong choice, hiring you? Did you make a mistake accepting the position?
No, none of this was a mistake. Sure, you may have slept with the guy who was now your boss, technically, but it was only a one-time thing. Everything had to be professional, which is how you would act when interacting with Poe. Every text between you was simple, it never led to a full conversation. Just simple directions and information that you needed. That’s all it was, and that’s all it needed to be.
Fuck, you taste even better, his deep voice rings in the back of your mind. You can’t help but think back to that night. The image of Poe kneeling on his knees in front of you as he throws your legs over his shoulders is clear as day. The way the light peeked in from outside and how his hands felt as they dug hard into your thighs, how his mouth felt—
Stop!
Shaking your head, you quickly think of something else. You really needed this job, and despite that one night no matter how amazing it was, you would not let that happen again.
Finally, you pull up into the pick-up car line and step out, taking a look around the school. Poe made sure to let you know the earlier you get there, the better chance of getting a good spot in line you would get. The parents can be very competitive, he told you.
You checked your watch, and realized you were right on time, so you started heading to the front office. As you look around, you notice just how much more lavish the vehicles in line were than your own. The front door had a buzzer that you hit to be let inside, and you noticed all the security cameras. This was definitely elite compared to the preschool you remembered going to.
Walking inside, you head straight to the front desk, spotting a receptionist. She gives you a friendly smile, leaning forward.
“Hi! Are you here for a pick-up?”
“Um, yes? I’m here for Eva Bey Dameron.”
“Oh, you’re the nanny, right? Mr. Dameron called and let us know you would be picking her up from now on.”
“That’s me,” you nod.
“Well, if I could see your ID please? It’s just a procedure when we get someone new for pick-up. I’ll copy it and put it in Eva Bey’s file.”
“Sure,” you reach into your bag and grab your wallet, pulling out or driver’s license to hand to her.
“Perfect, and if you can fill out this emergency contact form as well?” She hands you a clipboard. “It also asks for your vehicle information.”
“Okay, no problem.”
Just as you finish completing the form, she hands you back your ID. She then tells you which room Eva Bey is in and you make your way down the hallway.
The artwork displayed on the bulletin boards and the colorful decorations on each classroom door brightens up the hallway. Drawings, paintings, and even cut out projects fill each board. You finally make your way up to Eva Bey’s classroom, spotting a drawing of hers on the bulletin board. Smiling, you knock on the door before stepping inside, and see all of the children at their different stations.
A young woman walks up to you, a friendly smile on her face. “Hi, youre here to pick up Eva Bey, right? I just got the call from the front desk.”
“Yeah, I am,” you shake her hand, giving her your name.
“It’s good to meet you. I’m Miss Connix. Eva Bey is just finishing up with her sensory station so after she washes her hands she’ll be ready to go.”
“No problem, can I grab her bag?”
“Sure, her cubby is over there,” she points and you nod in thanks as you go grab the small, pink backpack.
You hear your name being called in a small voice, and turn to see Eva Bey hurrying to you. Smiling, you kneel down.
“Hey, Eva Bey! Are you ready to go home?”
“Yeah! Will my daddy be there?”
“No, he’ll be at work, remember? It’ll be just us today.”
“Okay!” She turns to her teacher. “Bye, Miss Connix!”
“Bye, Eva Bey! I’ll see you tomorrow!”
She grabs your hand as you stand up, making your way to sign her out before you lead her out of the classroom. She skips along next to you as you lead her to your car, her dark pigtails bouncing at the top of her head.
After getting her seated in her booster seat and buckled up, you quickly move to the front seat and look back at her.
“I brought some snacks if you’d like,” you smile. “We have granola bars and some Goldfish.”
“Can I have some Goldfish, please?”
“Sure.”
Handing her a bag, she happily takes it before swinging her feet over the edge of the seat. Flipping on your Disney playlist, you begin the ride to Poe’s house.
++++++
The trip back home wasn’t too bad, you were lucky enough to get past most of the traffic. A lot of the drive was spent singing songs from some of Eva Bey’s favorite movies, and hearing about her day at school. She mentioned how they were working on writing their letters, and also showed you a finger painting project she did for the letter ‘e’, which she was very excited to show you.
After arriving at Poe's house, you both quickly settled down so she could relax for a bit. Then, it was on to practicing tracing her letters from one of the few books Poe had left for Eva Bey to work on to practice each day. You sat and helped her for the first portion of the page for the letter ‘a’ before she was able to independently do the motions herself. While she worked on that, you quickly worked on getting a few things done for the house.
After putting away the dishes that were left in the dishwasher last night, you went on to go ahead and wash the few that were in the sink. There was a basket of Eva Bey’s dirty laundry that sat in the hallway, so you took care to get that started in the laundry. After getting that taken care of, Eva Bey ran straight up to you to show you the letters she did by herself.
“Wow! Look at that! That’s so good, Eva Bey,” you smile.
“Can we play, now?”
“Sure, we can play a bit before I start cooking dinner.”
She smiles and takes your hand, pulling you to her bedroom. As you sit on the rug in the floor of her room next to the small table, she goes and grabs a crate filled with various Barbies and other dolls, and then another filled with small dress up clothing accessories like beaded necklaces and hats.
“What are we going to be playing?”
“Tea party!” She comes up, placing a necklace around your neck.
“You know what? I was definitely ready to drink some tea, too,” you laugh softly. Her smile brightens and she quickly starts setting up the table. “Are there going to be treats, too?”
“Well, there’s biscuits! And cookies.”
“Maybe one of these days we can bake some cookies, what do you think?”
“Can they be Snickerdoodles? Those are my favorite.”
“Sure!”
You scoot closer to the table as Eva Bey sits down, pretending to pour tea into your little plastic teacup. Propping your pinky up, you feign taking a sip as Eva Bey giggles. The game goes on, the both of you acting silly and acting out a tea party when you notice how quiet Eva Bey suddenly gets. She stares down at her lap, and when she lets out a whisper of your name that’s when you realize something might be wrong.
“Yeah, Eva Bey?”
“...Did you ever play tea party with your mommy?”
The question kind of catches you off guard, but at the same time… You always wondered why Eva Bey’s mom wasn’t present, but knew it wasn’t your place to ask about it. From the way Eva Bey looks up at you with her soft, brown eyes, you figure it’s probably a sensitive subject.
“Well, I don’t really remember playing tea party with my mom,” you start off. “But I do remember playing other games.”
She only nods, and looks back down at her lap. You figure that’s all she is going to ask until she sighs softly.
“I don’t have a mommy,” she says simply, with a mere hint of sadness laced. “I ask my daddy about it but he says he will tell me when I’m older.”
“Oh… well,” you scoot closer to her. “You know, Eva Bey, there are a lot of people who don’t have mommy’s.”
“They don’t?”
“No, and that is okay. I know it can make us feel upset, too.” You say softly. Eva Bey mutters something and you lean down towards her to hear her. “Hm?”
“Sometimes the kids at school talk about their mommy’s, and it makes me feel a little sad.”
“Well… that’s okay to be sad, sometimes. You know why?”
“Why?”
“Because you have a daddy and grandpa who love you very much. And you know that you can always talk to them about it, and they will always be there to give you hugs and kisses when you feel sad.”
You hope that this was enough for Eva Bey to hear— you were not expecting this to be one of the first serious conversations with the four year old. But when she looks up at you, the corners of her mouth lift up slightly.
“Yeah… they do love me a lot.”
Relieved, you let out a slight laugh. “I know they do. Very much. Do you feel a little better?”
Eva Bey smiles fully, a bright sight, and nods. “Yeah.”
You smile, and check the time on your watch. “Oh, we should start cleaning up so that we can cook dinner. How does mac and cheese with some broccoli sound?”
“Okay!” She quickly jumps up, rushing to put all her toys away. You can’t help but chuckle at the sight, and help her out before heading to the kitchen.
++++++
Poe stretches as he gets out of his car, inhaling the crisp, cool night air. Everything is quiet now, despite the few cars driving along the road, and he checks the time. Eva Bey should have been in bed two hours ago, and he hoped that was the case.
Poe wonders for a moment how your first day together went: if there were any issues or if you guys had a great time. You didn’t have to contact him, except to tell him that you both made it home safely, so that should have been a good sign. And he knew that Eva Bey was talking nonstop about seeing you again after the first meeting.
Poe was glad, though. He wanted her to get along with you. Eva Bey was usually pretty shy, but yet you were able to get her to open up to you after minutes of being with her. She asked Poe plenty of questions like if he knew your favorite color or anything else, which Poe of course could not answer. Poe realized he didn’t know too much about you, and the little he did know was only what he learned from the interview and… the night before.
The sounds you made as he pinned you to the bed and rocked his hips into yours were etched in the back of his mind. The way you gasped and threw your head back in pleasure as you dug your nails into his back while he rubbed his fingers against your sensitive nub is pictured clearly. He hadn’t been with anyone who made him feel that good in so long and…
He should not be thinking about that right now.
Poe shakes his head, and wipes his hand down his face. He needed to stop. Whatever happened wouldn’t happen again, and he definitely would not cross any lines that were made between you both.
He unlocks the front door and steps inside, hearing nothing except the slight sounds of your humming. He sets his bag down, and walks to the kitchen to see you sitting at the counter with a laptop and binder out.
“Hey.”
You quickly look up, smiling. “Hey, I didn’t hear you come in. Eva Bey fell right to sleep at eight.”
“Did she? That’s good,” he nods as he heads to the fridge.
“Oh, I… actually made you some dinner— well… I happened to make more dinner for myself then I meant to, so… I made you a plate.”
Poe watches you walk over to the microwave, pulling out a plate of food. Turning, you place it in his hands.
“I figured you would want something different then Mac and cheese and broccoli,” you chuckle. “But I wasn’t sure if you ate on the way home or not, so—“
“I didn’t. Thank you, I’m starving actually and this looks way healthier then a drive-thru burger.”
Poe puts the plate back in the microwave and warms it up, while you stand awkwardly in place wringing your hands together. You desperately want to bring up the conversation you had with Eva Bey, but that would mean possibly having to bring up a new conversation that seemed to be sensitive with Poe.
But when he glances down at you, and sees the look on your face, you figure it’s too late to turn back.
“Um… can I ask you something?”
“Sure, anything.”
“...What happened to Eva Bey’s mother?”
Poe sighs, rubbing his brow as the microwave beeps and he pulls the plate out. He grips the edge of the counter, looking down in silence, and you wonder if you just crossed a line.
“I’m sorry, it’s just… she asked me a question about my mother and then she told me how she doesn’t have one—”
“No, it’s fine,” Poe waves you off. “It’s just… I’ve been trying to come up with a way to talk to her about it. But every time I think I found a way, I look into her eyes and just…”
Poe trails off, and you silently rebuke yourself for not keeping this to yourself.
“Poe, if you don’t want to talk about it—“
“No, no, it’s okay. I… I need to talk about this.”
Slightly relieved, you nod as Poe pushes away from the counter and faces you.
“When I was a sophomore in college, I met this girl. She was pretty nice, and of course I was just a dumb college kid. So, we made up this… arrangement. We were usually careful, but one thing led to another and, well, she ended up pregnant.”
Poe scoffs, shaking his head. You waited patiently for Poe to continue, leaning against the counter.
“Of course, I was willing to start a relationship. I told her I wasn’t going to walk out on her, and I didn’t want the kid to live without both parents. I took her out on dates, planned everything for the baby with her. I thought… I thought things were going well. That she felt the same way I did for her, and god, I even think at one point I was in love with her.
“Well, I must’ve been blinded or something. Because after she gave birth to Eva Bey, and she was cleared from the hospital, she left with no word. There was no way for me to reach her— her parents lived out of the state and I didn’t have any way to contact them. She just… disappeared, and left me alone to care for our child.”
“Oh, Poe… I’m so sorry.”
“Yeah, well… as Eva Bey got older, I tried coming up with a way to tell her about her mother. She’s only ever asked a handful of times, and of course she is so patient. She just looks at me and nods when I tell her ‘we’ll talk about it when you’re a little older’. But I just… I haven’t told her because…”
Poe swallows thickly, and you swear that if the crack in his voice doesn’t make your heart ache, the next thing he says will.
“...What kid wants to hear that their mom didn’t want to be their mom? That they didn’t want to read them bedtime stories and watch their dance recitals and miss their tee-ball games? Or kiss them goodnight and sing them to sleep?”
And of course, you feel for Poe after he says this. How do you even come up with a way to explain all that to a child? How can you tell them without making it feel like they did something wrong when in fact they did absolutely nothing?
And just how can someone look at a child— especially one as bright and sweet as Eva Bey— and decide they don’t want to be in their life?
All of these questions roll through your mind and you just miss the slight sniffle coming from Poe. Glancing at him, you watch as he wipes away a single tear.
“I just… I love that kid so damn much. I want to give her the world because she deserves it. Because she is one of the sweetest, and kindest kids. And she doesn’t even have the luxury of having both parents in her life. Just me—“
“Hey, don’t do that,” you shake your head. “Don’t even think of putting yourself down like that. Eva Bey is so lucky to have you as her father. That little girl loves you so much, I can see it all around here: from all the photographs and drawings of you both to the way her eyes light up when she talks about you.”
Poe lifts his gaze at the time you stare directly into his dark eyes, making your point quite clear.
“And she knows how much you love her. So do not ever doubt that you give her enough when the truth is you give her so much and more. She is so lucky to have you, and you are the only parent she needs, Poe. If her mother doesn’t want to be in that sweet little girl's life, then she doesn’t know what she’s missing out on. Because even I saw just how special Eva Bey is from the moment I met her.”
Something flashes in Poe’s eyes— something that you have to tell yourself isn’t really there because if it was, then that would be bad. But you continue to stay silent, staring into his eyes as the ticking from the clock in the living room makes its way to break the silence between you and Poe. And just as he stares down at you, it’s almost as if… as if he—
Poe clears his throat, taking a step back. “...Thank you, for saying that. About Eva Bey.”
You almost don’t hear what he says, but you quickly nod in response. “Well, it’s true. She’s a wonderful girl, and I’m lucky to get to be here and get to know her more.”
“...She’s lucky to get to have you here, too. And… so am I.”
A small, sincere smile forms upon your face, and Poe returns it all the same. Before you can say anything further, you happen to catch the time on the stove clock.
“Oh… it’s getting late. I should… go.”
“...Right. Right, you should.”
Poe watches as you gather your laptop and binder, and stuff them into your bag. As you throw the strap over your shoulder, Poe nods and follows you to the door silently. He opens it, and the slight breeze from outside hits your bare arms and causes you to shiver right away. Poe pretends not to notice as he walks you to your car, and you glance up at him.
“See you tomorrow?”
“Yeah. Thanks for dinner, by the way. And for… the talk.”
“Of course.”
Poe looks as if he has something else to say, but hesitates, and instead bids you good night before you get into your car. You watch through your window as Poe makes it back into his house, closing the door, and you let out a sigh— the emotional exhaustion finally catching up to you. Running your hands down your face, you finally start the car and proceed on your way back home.
What a first day, you think to yourself as you turn off onto the main road. You were not at all prepared for any of that — for the few questions from Eva Bey to the long, heart-rending conversation with Poe. Eva Bey seemed to be fine after you were able to get her to eat her dinner and play a bit more before putting her to sleep. But Poe…
You think back to the way he looked at you— there was definitely something hidden beneath those brown eyes of his, but you didn’t know what that was. It was for the best, you figure. But still, you couldn’t help the way your heart raced against your chest as you think back to it.
Tonight definitely changed things between the three of you.

Tips for looking for an apartment?
Im getting to the point where I can’t stand living with my parents anymore bc their viewpoints are different than mine. Except I don’t have my license, still have student loan debt to pay off and I’m trying to find a new job. I’m just ready to move out and live on my own 😫😫 and apartments these days are so overpriced. I don’t have many friends so I’d be living by myself.
Advice is greatly appreciated 😊
ah, i definitely know what it's like to be at the end of your rope regarding your living situation. i'll do my best to share what i can!
i've gotten mostly lucky with my living situations in the past—the last 3 apartments i lived in before my present one were all with people i had some personal connection to. the first was with my friend shannon and 2 other girls after she let me know a roommate was moving out, the second was with a friend-of-a-friend after i lamented to a guy that i needed a new place after my lease ended, and the third was a friend shannon's (from the first place!), who'd met at a house party and posted on her facebook about needing a new roommate.
so my first tip: take advantage of the friends and connections you do have. post on facebook. ask around if people know of someone looking for a roommate.
honestly, that second living situation was a godsend—at the time my lease was ending in about a month and i still didn't have a new place lined up. i went to a party and drunkenly told this guy charlie about the situation. he and i were always friendly! but i only ever saw him at parties so i never would have thought this would lead to anything. but a few days later he sent me a text out of the blue and let me know that he had a friend looking for a new roommate, and he put us in touch. so again i say: talk to people!! you will not believe what might come out of it.
as for my current place, i found it by...researching. i googled a lot about apartments in my area, outlining my parameters (how far was i willing to be from the metro? did i need an in-unit washer/dryer? what was my max rent including approximate utilities? etc etc), and then just...kept googling. once i found a couple complexes that fit my needs, i bookmarked them and kept an eye on the rent fluctuation.
and then...again, i asked people in my life for recommendations! i asked where they lived, what their rent was like, if they knew of other complexes that they'd recommend, etc etc.
once i was finally read to start thinking about leasing a place, i reached out to them for tours. i wasn't in the area so i had to make due with video tours, but if you're in the area and they've got safety protocols in place, you can go in person! then it's just about making a decision.
last, if you don't have a drivers license, make sure you have some other form of identification (passport, if you're in the US a state issued ID, etc) bc you will probably need it to rent a place.

Combeferre's mom once came home to find her son and his two best friends, tangled, sleeping in the couch, she has that picture framed next to Ferre's high school diploma.
Hi anon! I’m so sorry this took so long! Forgive me? I really loved this prompt and I wanted to do it justice.
---------------------------------------------------
Despite everything, Christmas and the holiday break surrounding the winter season had never really been stressful for Enjolras. Every year held the same routine: first Combeferre’s mother would sprint to the elementary school which soon gave way to the middle school which soon gave way to the high school he, Combeferre, and Courfeyrac would attend, and, gasping for breath, ask Enjolras if he would like to spend holiday break with their family. Right as Enjolras would open his mouth to answer the question, Courfeyrac’s mom would materialize out of the air and tug him to their side and ask him if he would like to spend holiday break at their house. Then each of the mother’s would demand to know how dare the other have the audacity to ask Enjolras to spend holiday break at her house when she knows that it’s her turn, and the fathers would passive aggressively try to nab the same parking spot to pick their son up from, and in the end, Enjolras would head home after having promised each family that he would think on it. Then, the next day, the cycle would start over again when both Combeferre and Courfeyrac latched onto either of his arms and tug, demanding he spend holiday break with him, and while he would scowl and pretend it’s an annoyance, he was never really able to tamp down the beam that would eventually make its way onto his face during the whole argument, and he knew that Combeferre and Courfeyrac too knew how much he loved it—loved feeling wanted, loved feeling like he’s part of a family even if he didn’t necessarily hold the blood relations within it, because God knew that what little he had of his family--his father--never welcomed him.
Usually, Enjolras alternated houses each holiday break, but it never stopped the arguments from occurring.
This year would have been the same. He was gearing up for the arguments even though he knew that this year he would be spending his time at Combeferre’s house.
But there were none. No one had to argue. There were no laughs or smiles or pretenses at being mad at each family as if they were the Montagues and the Capulets.
This year, Enjolras spent the first day of his junior year holiday break curled up in Combeferre’s bed while his two best friends and each of their parents all stood downstairs in the living room, speaking in hushed tones about the only person who wasn’t present in the room.
Beside the bed on the nightstand stood the few barebone possessions Enjolras had stored in his pocket when his father had finally thrown him out of the house. There laid his wallet, filled only with a few measly dollars and his ID and license, among a few other things, his phone, a pack of gum, and a granola bar wrapper.
He doesn’t think sleep will come to him tonight. Not while the sight of the little he has left to his name stares at him, a reminder of the fact that his father believes he’s only valuable to be allowed a pack of gum as edibles when he locked the door in his face.
Enjolras knows his father is no fool; he knows that as soon as he uttered the words “get out,” that his son would appear on the doorstep of either the Combeferres or the de Courferyacs, that they would plunge their household into an emergency situation and get him in the shower, into new clothes, into a new bed, after having some warm food—but he also knows that if they hadn’t been there for him, he wouldn’t care either way where his son ended up.
And then Courfeyrac and his family had been called over, and here he was, shaking in bed, a nuisance, rather than be out there, discussing the logistics of the situation with everyone.
He doesn’t think motion will come easy to him either for a while.
The door creaks open, spilling streams of light from the bright hallway into the dark room, and he finds he has to squint to make out the distinct figure of Courfeyrac gently padding into the room and gingerly seating himself at his bedside, right beside his face. His best friend cards a gentle hand through his hair.
“Combeferre?” he mumbles unintelligibly, wondering where he was. His mouth feels dry—like no amount of water will get rid of that sharp feeling when he swallows and his throat cries out for nourishment.
Courfeyrac gives him a small smile. “He’s gone over to your house with his father. He’s getting your stuff.”
Enjolras coughs. When had he been coming down with a cold? “He’s probably thrown it all away by now,” he responds, shutting his eyes for a moment, trying to ignore the little he has on the nightstand. Courfeyrac cards his hand through his hair once more, and Enjolras leans in a little closer. This touch, at least, is gentle. He hasn’t felt such a thing in a while.
“That fast?” Courfeyrac asks quietly. He nods with another cough. His friend gives him a pained look, and Enjolras knows how it must pain him not to portray his comfort through some form of touch—it’s how Courfeyrac expresses love and care, and Enjolras doesn’t want to see that look on his face, and truth be told he too wants it, but he doesn’t know how to ask for it, not like this, not in this situation—
But then, Courfeyrac comes through, like he always does, because he’s always there, he’s always been there just as Combeferre has, since they each met each other in kindergarten and decided through means of their friendship bracelets that they would always be there for each other, like the first time Courfeyrac’s heart had been broken, or the first time Combeferre failed a biology exam and started to doubt his potential to pursue his dreams of becoming a doctor, or the first time Enjolras had the courage to tell his friends about the verbal abuses his father would throw him, and Courfeyrac is there, real and solid, he’s not just an apparition, or a friend his father says simply “tolerates him,” and he’s asking him, “Can I hug you?”
And Enjolras is nodding, nodding because he needs this, he lets Courfeyrac wrap his arms around him tight, he caves in and fists his friend’s shirt, and reality is crashing down on him, but as real as his father’s words to never come back, as real as the uncertainty of his future is, so too is the reality of his friends’ love for him.
And if they both fall asleep like that, and Combeferre gently opens the door to the sight of his two friends curled around each other, as if the past few hours never occurred, if he joins them on the bed, then that just serves as further proof that even if the world comes crumbling down around them, at least they’ll be together, salvaging what little they can and rebuilding their own, better world.
_________________________________________
They managed to retrieve most of his possessions, actually.
Well. His father would argue that they’re really his possessions because they were bought with his money, but Combeferre and his father wouldn’t hear of it. The important thing is they retrieved the legal documents necessary, and quite a few of Enjolras’ clothes and books, amongst various other things.
When they finish raiding the house, Enjolras’ father asks with a sneer to leave him alone from then on.
How ridiculous, thinks Combeferre. If Enjolras was going to start living with his family now, he does realize there’s going to have to be some legal discussion on the transference of possession of a minor, doesn’t he?
---------------------------------------------------
They’re sitting on the couch, bundled underneath a blanket while Combeferre’s parents are out dealing with the legalities of the situation, and they are watching, of all shows, Maury, and Enjolras can’t stop complaining, but Courfeyrac won’t change it, even if he loathes the show (honestly just loathes daytime television—who actually enjoys this stuff?) because there—there—there’s that relaxed, unstressed attitude he’s been trying for so hard to coax from Enjolras in the past few weeks that Courfeyrac has been staying with Combeferre’s family, trying to ease Enjolras into this new transition with as much support as he can give.
“You… are… the… FATHER!!!” Maury screams on tv, pointing to the man everyone already knew would have been. From his position—head in Enjolras’ lap, he can see the way Enjolras’ expressions contort to one of exasperation and irritation at having to watch something so unbelievably garbage.
“Okay, you know who the father is, now can we please watch something else?” he asks for the hundredth time.
Reaching up, he pokes a finger in Enjolras’ cheek. “But, Enjolras! There’s a new episode starting up right after this! Don’t you want to know about…” he casts his arm around for the remote, reading the description for the next episode, “...Garth cheating on Cheryl with her friend… Helen?”
Enjolras looks down at him, incredulous. “Courfeyrac, please.”
“Yes, Courfeyrac,” Combeferre says as he drops down on the couch, a bowl of popcorn in his hands, “change the channel. There’s only so much of Kathy accusing Abigail of carrying her husband’s child that I can take.” Setting it aside on the coffee table in front of them all, he drapes an arm around Enjolras, a silent invitation.
And when Enjolras leans in, settling his head on Combeferre’s chest without flinching or tensing up for the first time in so many days, Courfeyrac smiles.
Pouting, he pretends to be upset at the way Enjolras and Combeferre gang up on him. “Fine, then what do you say we watch—and no, Ferre, we’re not watching a Nat Geo documentary. This isn’t the time for Nat Geo documentaries.”
Combeferre looks affronted. “Fine. But that means we’re not watching Bridget Jones’ Diary again.”
He gasps, outraged. “Excuse you! Bridget Jones’ Diary is a cult classic.” He glances back up at Enjolras. “Back me up here, Enj.”
Enjolras snorts. “Why would I waste my time watching Bridget Jones get together with knock off Mr. Darcy when I can instead watch Elizabeth Bennet get together with real-deal Mr. Darcy? After some due insults, that is,” he ends, smiling a little.
Sighing dramatically, he reached up to twist one of Enjolras’ curls around his finger. “All this talk of Lizzy Bennet and Mr. Darcy from you Enjolras, and yet I still don’t see you looking for your own Mr. Darcy. You’ve roasted the shit out of plenty of people. When are we going to find someone who tells you that you’ve bewitched them body and soul?”
Enjolras scrunches his nose as Combeferre shakes his head. “Enjolras ‘roasts the shit’ out of bigots in school. I doubt he’d want to go out with racist Randy from history class.”
“I thought we were deciding what movie we were going to watch, not my love life,” complains Enjolras.
“And I’m just trying to find you a love life!” he shoots back.
Enjolras raises an eyebrow. “If I’m Elizabeth Bennet, and you’re unjustly interfering in my love life, wouldn’t that make you Mrs. Bennet, then?”
He gasps. “You take that back!”
Enjolras smiles smugly, resuming carding his fingers through Courfeyrac’s hair. “I can think very well of another bookworm who Mr. Bennet would be,” he says with an air of superiority. Courfeyrac blushes and glares up at him, just as Combeferre breaks from looking through Netflix and goes hm?
“Let’s get back to looking for a movie,” he mutters.
And then—
Then—
Courfeyrac would risk his crush being exposed hundreds of times if it meant he could hear Enjolras laugh again like that, laugh after so long, after so many weeks of being so tense, so much more tense than boys their age should be. He beams as he watches Enjolras try and recover himself from his fit of laughter, and under the blanket, he squeezes Combeferre’s hand, and he smiles even brighter when as he watches Combeferre watch their best friend softly, some of the past few days’ tension dissipate, though they all know it’s not gone completely.
But here in this moment, as Enjolras laughs, which makes Courfeyrac laugh, and in turn makes Combeferre furrow his eyebrows trying to figure out what he missed, it exists as something outside their reality.
“You know what we should watch?” Enjolras finally manages to say when he’s caught his breath. Combeferre sees the look in Enjolras’ eyes and sighs.
“But it’ll be the second time this month.”
Courfeyrac catches on quickly. “As if you haven’t watched the same Nat Geo documentary four times in the same month.” He casts his eyes back up to Enjolras and gives him a small salute. “I second the motion, dear leader!”
As Enjolras bursts out into laughter once more, Combeferre heaves another sigh and begins to look through Netflix, resigned to his fate. Though, he admits it’s a rather good fate. Honestly, who doesn’t love this movie?
Enjolras snuggles closer into Combeferre’s chest. Combeferre tightens his arm around Enjolras’ shoulder. Enjolras continues to card his fingers through Courfeyrac’s curls. Courfeyrac has his feet thrown up on Combeferre’s lap. All three of them burrow under the blankets as, on screen, Grandpa begins to recite the tale of Westley and Buttercup’s love story.
_________________________________________
Unsurprisingly, it is Enjolras who falls asleep first, head heavy on Combeferre’s chest. Courfeyrac would have smiled at the sight, if he wasn’t also on the verge of falling asleep. Combeferre considers making two trips and carrying his two friends up the stairs and two his room, but his own eyes are drooping closed, and the blankets were warm, and so were his friends.
He figures they’ll all wake up later anyways.
---------------------------------------------------
They don’t wake up for a while.
The movie is over and something absurd Netflix has suggested is playing, but dimly, as her son, Enjolras, and Courfeyrac all sleep on, bundled together.
Can anyone blame her, really, when Mme. Combeferre cannot resist and snap a picture?
Right now, the entire world seemed to be crashing down on those three, and on her family and the de Courfeyracs.
But here is a moment in which they reside in this little space of bliss they have—carefree, the weight of the world off their shoulders, the weight of problems they shouldn’t have to deal with—and it is a moment worth capturing, a reminder that maybe, hopefully, soon enough, things will be okay.
Two years later, as her son and his two best friends—one of which she had considered another one of her sons the moment she had seen him when the three were all in kindergarten—leave for university, she breathes out, looks back, and nods.
Yes, things had turned out okay.
Next to her son’s and Enjolras’ high school diplomas hangs that same picture—the three all snuggled on the couch. At the de Courfeyrac’s the same hangs in the living room, and as the three boys—the triumvirate, she thinks with a fond roll of her eyes—head off to their new residence at university where they’ll stay together, as they had always meant to, she knows that the framed copy she sent with her son will hang there too.
Things turned out okay.

The Stars Made Us (Part 2)
Prompt: In this world, you’re one of the “lucky” ones who got a soulmate, but what if the universe gives you more than you bargained for?
(Prompt challenge – You live in a world where your soulmate can write on their skin and you will get the writing on your own and vice versa. Where they can wash away the ink on their own skin, however, the writing is forever scarred onto your skin until you meet face to face)
Word Count: 1436
Warnings: angst and language throughout
Notes: This was supposed to be for @sorryimacrapwriter and their challenge like a year ago, I think? I still loved the prompt though and have been working on this story for quite some time. ~~~~~~~~~~~
When you woke up in the early afternoon, your parents greeted you with a bit of a chuckle.
“Stay up too late with Jenny?” your mom asked with a teasing smirk. It was a habit of yours and Jenny to probably stay up way past your bedtime, but so long as it wasn’t a school night, your parents never cared.
“Actually… I.. uh, have some news,” you announced as you grabbed some bacon for a BLT that they’d made for lunch.
“Oh?” your dad asked, his eyes still on his laptop. “What’s that?”
“So… Jenny was kind of joking around last night and said that I should try to write on my arm, you know… to see if I had a soulmate…” you began explaining, twisting your fingers around nervously as you sat at the table.
Your parents just looked at you curiously.
“Well, so I did. I wrote something on my arm, and I waited to see if someone would write back… and they did,” you said, showing them your arm. They saw the ‘Happy Birthday’, and the ‘Hi there’, with a smiling face.
“A soulmate?” your dad echoed, looking at your arm inquisitively.
“We’ve never had soulmates in the family, have we, dear?” your mom wondered as she looked over her cup at her husband.
“Not that I know of. Well what do you know about that?” he mused. “I don't see any more marks on your arms, did your mate not write back much last night?”
“No, we actually emailed. We thought it would be best if we reserve our skin.. You know, we don’t want a bunch of… tattoos of each other unless they’re meaningful.”
“Sounds sensible,” your mom noted with a smile. “So what do you know about them?”
“He’s a grad student. He’s 21. He graduated from Harvard at 16, and get this, he’s into psych. He studies it.”
“Graduated at 16?” your dad asked. “Are you sure this guy isn’t pulling your leg? What if he’s some bum?”
“If he is some bum, he’s got a great education. We stayed up all night emailing, and he’s quite well-read.”
“That sounds fantastic, honey. And, did you get his name?” she asked, a bit nervous.
You shook your head. “No, we agreed it wasn’t safe.”
“Good girl,” your mom commended.
“He’s 21, hmm?” your dad hummed. “Isn’t that a little old?”
“Oh, Anthony, don’t pretend like that’s some big gap. You and I have five years between us,” your mom reminded as she got up to pick up the kitchen.
“Yeah well we didn’t meet in high school either. We were adults.”
“I’d hardly call us adults. We were 23 and 28.”
Your dad just shook his head. “You just be careful, kiddo. Soulmate or not, there are weirdos out there.”
“Of course, Dad,” you said.
Well, that was out of the way. Your parents didn’t seem to be too upset, which was good.
You went upstairs to your room and sent an email to X.
“My parents know about us now,” you wrote.
“Do they approve?”
“They’re worried you’re a liar and a weirdo, lol,” you confessed with a smiley face.
“They might be right ; )”
“I reminded them that we won’t ever swap information until one of our names shows up.”
“Of course. As tempted as I am to meet you like a normal person, I don’t want to tamper with fate.”
“I feel the same. And your parents? Have you told them?”
“My parents have died. Happened a few years ago.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. That’s awful.”
“It’s sad, yes, but don’t let that bring down your mood, please. I miss them terribly. I bet they would’ve loved to meet you.”
“I would’ve loved to meet them.”
“Speaking of, we need to get registered.”
Registered? For what? A marriage license?
Then it hit you.
“Oh, you mean the soulmate registry?”
“That’s the one. Do you have access to it?”
“Yeah, I can just drive to it. It’s at the clerk’s office, right?”
“Yes, it is. Oh, I need to go, Y/F/I. I’ll talk to you later. Feel free to send me emails throughout the day.”
“Will do, X. I’ll go to the registry on Monday, after school.”
“Looking forward to it.”
---------------------------------
The following afternoon, you went to the county clerk to file for a soulmate. You arrived at the building, stood in line, and finally, it was your turn. You were greeted by an older woman with a permanent scowl on her face.
“Can I help you?” she asked evenly.
“I, uh, I need to get registered for a soulmate?” you said tentatively. You had no idea how this part of the process went.
She eyed you up and down. “Very well, come with me.” She turned around and started to walk away from the counter and you looked around to see if you were supposed to follow. Since no one seemed to be stopping you as you inched towards the small opening in the counter, you went ahead and followed her.
“Do you have a driver’s license?” she asked once she reached a little podium against a wall.
You didn’t answer, instead you quickly searched your purse and wallet to retrieve the ID. She took it from you but before she did anything she asked you to show you the markings.
“I got these, on my arm,” you informed as you pushed your arm forward, your arms exposed.
“I’m just checking to make sure they aren’t tattoos,” she mused as she eyed them and scanned them with a small device that emitted purple light, you assumed it was a UV light or some form of it. “Alright, that all looks good.” With that, she turned to a computer and pulled up a file, scanning your driver’s license that filled out a bunch of forms and blanks - your name, age, social security, birthday, address. “Now, I need to document your markings. Put your arm right here,” she instructed, pointing to what looked like a small x-ray machine. It had a flat platform, a light, crosshairs, and an overhead lens. “Hold still,” she ordered.
You did your best to keep still as she pressed a button and the image was snapped.
“Did you write anything to them?” she asked, her voice stern.
“Yes, I wrote a few things,” you said, explaining everything you wrote and where.
“When did the markings appear? I need the date and time,” she informed.
“Alright, you’re officially in the system. Do you know their name?”
“No, we’ve only emailed and I refer to him as X?” you said, unsure.
“Good. I’m not sure if you know this or not, but we tell everyone who gets a mate: it’s never good to meet them before your time.”
“I’ve heard,” you noted quietly.
“It usually ends in an untimely death, and you don’t get another mate. No one has ever had more than one mate, even if their first one dies.”
You nodded. It made sense. The universe designed one person to fit your soul exactly, they couldn’t do that with two people, it would be crazy.
“No, yeah we agreed not to give any personal information away,” you confirmed.
“Good. Now, whenever your mate comes in to get registered, neither of you will be notified.”
You frowned for a moment. “So what’s the point in doing this?” you wondered.
“In case anything happens before you two meet, you can be notified. If you need a donor, your mate is notified. It’s mainly for record keeping, but just in case, they’re basically added to every In Case of Emergency list you have.”
“Really? Okay,” you said, a little more interested.
“Well you’re all set. Here’s some information for you,” she informed as she handed you a pamphlet. It said: So now you’ve got a soulmate, what this means for you.
Inside were several Do’s and Don'ts.
Do tell people you have a mate, so they don’t think you’re covered in tattoos of random words.
Don’t get the name of your soulmate before it appears on your skin. Their name and current location will appear when you are needed most by them.
Do be sure to include that you have a mate on any legal forms.
Don’t request a new mate.
… on and on it went. It made you smile and laugh at how… old it seemed to be.
Before you knew it, you were back in front of your computer screen, sending an update to X. He said he was busy today and would have to go to the clerk tomorrow.

Social Distancing Book Recs
I’ve been getting tons of book recommendations from friends and family to help get through social distancing/self-quarantine, so I thought I should share some of my favorite books with everybody!
Horror/Apocalyptic: *all books are ADULT*
- The Stand by Stephen King “This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides -- or are chosen” (Goodreads Summary).
- Inferno by Dan Brown “Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon awakens in an Italian hospital, disorientated and with no recollection of the past thirty-six hours, including the origin of the macabre object hidden in his belongings. With a relentless female assassin tailing them through Florence, he and his resourceful doctor, Sienna Brooks, are forced to flee. Embarking on a harrowing journey, they must unravel a series of codes, which are the work of a brilliant scientist whose obsession with the end of the world is matched only by his passion for one of the most influential masterpieces ever written, Dante Alighieri’s The Inferno” (Goodreads Summary).
- World War Z by Max Brooks “The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, form decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years” (Goodreads summary).
- It by Stephen King “It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real... They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But none of them can withstand the force that has drawn them back to Derry to face the nightmare without an end, and the evil without a name” (Goodreads summary).
- The Shining by Stephen King “Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic locations feels ever more remote... and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old” (Goodreads summary).
- House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski “[House of Leaves] focuses on a young family that moves into a small home on Ash Tree Lane where they discover something is terribly wrong: their house is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Of course, neither Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Will Navidson nor his companion Karen Green was prepared to face the consequences of the impossibility, until the day their two little children wandered off and their voices eerily began to return another story -- of creature darkness, of an ever-growing abyss behind a closet door, and of the unholy growl which soon enough would tear through their walls and consume all their dreams” (Goodreads summary).
Comedy:
- Good Omens by Neil Gaimen and Terry Pratchett “People have been predicting the end of the world almost from its very beginning, so it’s only natural to be skeptical when a new date is set for Judgement Day. But what if, for once, the predictions are right, and the apocalypse really is due to arrive next Saturday, just after tea? You could spend the time left drowning your sorrows, giving away all your possessions in preparation for the rapture, or laughing it off as (hopefully) just another hoax. Or you could just try to do something about it. It’s a predicament that Aziraphale, a somewhat fussy angel, and Crowley, a fast-living demon now finds themselves in. They’ve been living amongst Earth’s mortals since The Beginning and, truth be told, have grown rather fond of the lifestyle and, in all honesty, are not actually looking forward to the coming Apocalypse. And then there’s the small matter that someone appears to have misplaced the Antichrist... “ (Goodreads summary).
- Dad Is Fat by Jim Gaffigan *PG-13* Dad is Fat is a comedic memoir that details Jim Gaffigan’s life growing up in a large Catholic family to his experiences as a husband and father (specifically parenting his five young children while living in a tiny walk-up apartment in New York). I highly recommend the audiobook (which is narrated by Jim Gaffigan), my family and I always listen to it during road trips. It never stops being funny.

- The Men Who Stare at Goats by Jon Ronson *Adult* “In 1979 a secret unit was established by the most gifted minds within the U.S. Army. Defying all known accepted military practice-- and indeed, the laws of physics-- they believed that a soldier could adopt a cloak of invisibility, pass cleanly through walls, and, perhaps most chillingly, kill goats just by staring at them. Entrusted with defending America from all known adversaries, they were the First Earth Battalion. And they really weren’t joking. What’s more, they’re back and fighting the War on Terror. With firsthand access to the leading players in the story, Ronson traces the evolution of these bizarre activities over the past three decades and shows how they are alive today within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and in postwar Iraq. Why are they blasting Iraqi prisoners of war with the theme tune to Barney the Purple Dinosaur? Why have 100 debleated goats been secretly placed inside the Special Forces Command Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina? - Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert *Adult* (I recommend listening to the audiobook, which is narrated by Elizabeth Gilbert) “To recover from [an early midlife crisis, divorce, and depression], Gilbert took a radical step. In order to give herself the time and space to find out who she really was and what she really wanted, she got rid of her belongings, quit her job, and undertook a yearlong journey around the world-- all alone. Eat, Pray, Love is the absorbing chronicle of that year. Her aim was to visit three places where she could examine one aspect of her own nature set against the backdrop of a culture that has traditionally done that one thing very well. In Rome, she studied the art of pleasure, learning to speak Italian and gaining the twenty-three happiest pounds of her life. India was for the art of devotion, and with the help of a native guru and a surprisingly wise cowboy from Texas, she embarked on four uninterrupted months of spiritual exploration. In Bali, she studied the art of balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence. She became the pupil of an elderly medicine man and also fell in love the best way-- unexpectedly” (Goodreads summary).

best friends saga | jeff wittek
HIGH SCHOOL AU
jeff wittek x bestfriend!reader
Tumblr media
summary: just a ton of shorts of jeff and his unlikely best friend in a high school au :)
warnings: mentions of abuse, light blood/injury, slight angst, fluff
1.9k words
note: jumps around a lot- none of these happen in order opps lol
“aright so i was thinking-” jeff started but y/n but her hands up motioning for the boy to stop his talking. she was not going to be bossed around by someone who intimidates kids to do his homework.
“i’ll stop you right there.” she grabbed a stack of papers handing half of them to jeff. “i was thinking i will finish this half and you can finish the other and then we will combine what we have.” y/n's words fell off her lips in a bored, blunt tone. she was stoked to be working with jeff on this project but y/n was just tired. she had been up with her mother all night trying to convince her that no one was in the house.
jeff pursed his lips lightly, a slight smirk making it’s way on his lips. “but what if i want to spend time with you.” he pushed, his voice growing a bit deeper.
“stop- I’m not doing this whole presentation, now I have to get going. don't screw this up I need the grade in this class.” y/n gathered her things. it was true, she did need her grade to go up in this class.
“so why is it your jeff side is completely sealed off.” erin and carly, two of y/n’s close friend had been questioning her about jeff ever since they suddenly became close friends. It was a shocker for the whole school, jeff didn’t have girl friends- he didn’t really have friends at all.
y/n huffed, she was tired of talking about him. that's all anyone ever wanted to talk about with her. now that she had befriended the mysteriously handsome boy, girls from all cliques wanted to become friends. although y/n knew they were all fake, she still felt a little warm in all the attention. “why does it matter, it’s not like i’m dating him. i haven’t changed and neither has he.”
“sorry, i find it a bit strange that you and the hottest guy in school became friends, in a matter of months.” erin had always had a thing for jeff, y/n always thought it was a pointless school girl crush- and still does, it all seemed to cliche for her.
“speak of the devil.” carly mumbled stuffing a scoop of mashed potatoes in her mouth.
“hey...ellie and...carly?” y/n couldn’t help but laugh at his attempt to remember her friend's name. most would take it as a joke but jeff really could care less.
“erin.” She corrects him through a mouth full of french fries. He simply nods, turning back to y/n.
jeff gave y/n a lopsided grin. “my mom wants to have you over for dinner. No code red so it will be enjoyable.” she knew he hated having dinner with his mom and her, he wanted something. she motioned for him to continue. “And after I was thinking we could go to murphy’s.” murphy’s was a club.
“i don’t even have a-” jeff holds up a fake ID with her driver's license photo printed on it. now y/n really had no excuse to say no, other than the fact clubbing was not her scene. “fine, but on one condition. erin and carly get to come.” she smiled in triumph, collecting all the trash onto her tray, handing it to jeff for him to throw away.
he flashed his award-winning smirk towards the girls. “the more the merrier.”
-
y/n shoved her car keys back into her bag, this was the third time jeff had blown her off to finish this project. she was tired of it, she wasn’t going to take no as an answer this time.
“i thought i told you today wasn’t a good time.” jeff kept the door cracked around his face, he kept peering back every once in a while.
y/n positioned her foot in the door, so jeff couldn’t close the door in her face as he did the past few times. “no, i don't care.”
“No?”
“i need to get this project done and quite frankly i don’t care what you are hiding in your house.” she looked up at him with the sternest face she could muster up, even though she looks like a mad teddy bear, jeff he complied. he knew as soon as she saw what was on the inside y/n would immediately want to leave.
he pushed the door open letting her walk-in, his house looked neat and put together, nothing like y/n suspected. jeff’s mom was sitting on the couch, an icepack on her wrist and his father was nowhere to be seen. “momma this is y/n, we are going to be working on a project in my room.” jeff spoke so kindly with his mother like anything little thing would set her off, she kindly smiled at the girl and nodded looking back down at her bruised hand sadly.
No matter how hard y/n tried not to flinch when the yelling started downstairs she couldn’t help it. jeff’s father's outburst scared her more than she knew, she finally understood why he wanted to keep her out and she couldn’t blame him. if anyone witnessed y/n’s mother’s outburst she would be ashamed as well.
“i’m sorry.” Her apology came out quiet and soft, she felt bad for barging in like this. she should have known better. She peered through her eyelashes waiting for jeff to lash out on her, or cry, or force her out the door but instead a smile crept onto his face. In fact, he started laughing, it caused the hell out of y/n. “w-what?”
jeff put his hand over his mouth trying to contain his fits of laughter. “i’’ sorry, i’m sorry but i never thought i would have a girl in my room while my dad is blowing up on my mom for no reason- c-can I be honest here?” he didn’t wait for her to answer. “for so long-” jeff’s voice became soft once again, he looked down to his hands. “i had to listen to my father tear my mother to pieces and now that someone’s here it doesn’t hurt as bad. is that wrong of me?” his watery eyes met y/n’s, who wore a clear expression of understanding across her face.
her heart broke for him, she brought herself in front of him, putting his hands into hers. “no, no, no. it’s not wrong, not at all. jeff- pain, it’s easier when you have someone there. it’s human nature.”
“you seem like your speaking from experience.” a sad smile formed on his lips, although he was just talking it still caused y/n to tense slightly. she knew it wasn’t fair to want to conceal her past after jeff just confessed his but it still made her feel uneasy.
-
“y/n/n, I think it has a nice ring to it.” jeff continued to try and come up with a nickname for y/n while his head laid in her lap. They were watching the outsiders-  y/n’s pick- it was movie night.
she just hummed in response, even though secretly she loved it, she had been calling jeff bubs, for the longest time now and he wanted a nickname of his own for her. “I like it.”
-
it was a normal night for y/n, she would do a small workout, cook dinner for herself and her mom, go to sleep. it was a basic schedule and only changes when she’s at jeff’s or he’s here.
she was about to lie down but her phone buzzed, y/n groaned, she had already taken melatonin and was almost asleep. jeff’s number flashed across the screen. “hello?”
“y/n/n?” jeff’s voice was quiet like he was hiding. “i’m outside. could you let me in?” as he talked y/n ran down the stairs to her front door, her eyes met with jeff’s before they traveled down to his bloody cheek.
her eyebrows knitted together, she asked no questions, she knows he will tell her. y/n gently dragged him into the house, leading him to the bathroom and to clean his face and wounds. y/n sat on the bathroom counter, jeff was standing between her legs, slightly flinching at the sting of alcohol on his cuts.
jeff couldn’t help but smile while looking at the girl. whenever y/n was concentrating, she would stick her tongue out a bit, he learned that the first day he was assigned the project with her.
“going to tell me what happened,” she questioned throwing the bloody tissues away. jeff held his hand up, it was as well bloody and bruised, y/n frowned. “buds, what happened?”
a sigh fell through jeff’s lips. “i threw a punch at him, he was going to hurt her again and I couldn’t keep watching. he got a nice swing on me, though.” his body was filled with so much pain and anger, this is one of the few times jeff has intervened in one of his parents fights- let alone the only time he's gotten physical with his father. “y/n/n,  you know usually i let it play out but i couldn't listen to her cries anymore. fuck, i'm sorry.”
y/n cut him off, she didn’t want him to finish his sentence. she knew it hurt him and that was the last thing she wanted to do at the moment. “stop- it’s okay. i get it, don’t be sorry. he doesn’t deserve your apologies.” she rested his head on her shoulder.
“i just want to kill him sometimes and it scares me because i might have enough hatred to do so.” jeff looked her in the eyes to see if there was any form of fear in them, fear of him but he only saw pain and that's even worse.
“jeff if you’re anything, it's not a killer. don’t think like that, I know it is a touchy subject but I’m going to let you talk to herself like you are going crazy. if anyone is a killer is him.” y/n could feel jeff tense. “you can stay here if you want to.”
“can I?” He questioned, his voice soft and quiet, y/n nodded, hopping off the counter. she watched him carefully as he pulled out the futon in the corner, spreading on the sheets she keeps in the closet just for him before taking a few pillows from her bed. jeff removed his shirt and laid down looking at the wall, y/n knew on so many levels how broken he was but he, himself never wanted to admit it, it made her sad, almost as if everything he felt she felt a small part of it too.
-
“and jeff, i swear to god if you don’t call me everyday i will not hesitate to beat your ass.” y/n sassed, trying to lighten the mood. she didn't want to get upset as she was saying her goodbyes to jeff at his new dorm, he was finally going off to college.
“yes ma’am.” he teased bringing her into his arms for a long-awaited hug. neither of the two really wanted to let go. y/n was first to pull away, she didn't want to cry because she knew they would still be best friends and they will always see each other but it hurt.
jeff turned to his mom, gave her one last hug before taking his first steps into college life, away from his dad, mom, high school, y/n. “bye bubs!” she shouted waving her arm frantically, with the biggest smile on her face. “wish i could say i’m sad to see you go!”

Crack Ship Holidays
Halloween Pt. 1- Cassian x Feyre
.
.
.
My cellphone falls to the floor and I groan, blindly reaching for it in the dark. Was it really five-thirty already? I tap the screen until the cursed alarm goes silent. I slide out of bed, taking the pillow and blanket with me and once my bare legs hit the cold floor, I shoot to my feet and toss my phone on the bed.
It was only October and the damned apartment was a freezer. But I have to shower; I have mascara and eye liner smeared on my face, my hair looks like a rat’s nest after all the hairspray I’d used and this dress- god this stupid dress. It belongs to Mor, but I haven’t done laundry in over a week and I needed something decent to meet them all in at the bar. It was beautiful, but it was so snug that it left marks all over my skin. And that wasn’t even counting what the strapless bra did to me.
Cursing, I shower quickly, washing my hair under cold water until it turns hot enough that I stop shivering. I blow dry my hair and pass the flat iron over it quickly before hurrying to get dressed. Mindful of where I will be today, I slide into skinny jeans and a black t-shirt. No one is going to see my Halloween socks, which is a tragedy, but at least I have my sweater. I know Mor and Nesta would look at me with disgust if they knew I hadn’t washed this sweater since the last time I’d worn it but it still had Cassian’s cologne. As did his leather jacket that he so conveniently left here after everyone had come over to play cards.
My car takes way too long to start but luckily, I still have enough time to stop for coffee and a bagel before driving to the school. One of Cassian’s friends, another tattoo artist, has a girlfriend that teaches music there. He had mentioned to Cas that they needed an art teacher and my best friend gave them my number. I had been so nervous when he’d told me, to the point that I almost puked. But he had talked me back down to earth and drove me to meet the principal last week.  And for now, it’s just volunteering, and I can live with that.
I mentally go down the list of all I have to do when I get there. I have to find and park in the visitor’s section. Go to the front office and hand in my ID and get signed in. Scope out the supplies readily available and set up shop before 9am.
The security guard eyes my bag of art supplies with amusement.
“Carrying a body in there?” he asks in a pathetic attempt at teasing. I force a laugh. If I say what I really want to say, I will ruin this and I cannot fuck this up.
“Good morning, you must be Ms. Archeron,” the secretary says cheerfully. She wasn’t here when I came in last week.
“Is it that obvious?” I ask, reaching into my back pocket for my wallet.
She stands and leans over, as though sharing a secret. “You’ve got a bit of paint on your jeans.”
I look down. “Oh… That happens a lot.”
I set the bag down, taking my license out and sliding it towards her.
“Perfect,” she says. “I’m Briar, by the way.”
I nod, doing my best not to shove my hands into my pockets- a habit I developed thanks to Rhys.
“So, I know we asked for an hour,” Briar says, typing away at the computer. “But some parents handed their forms in late. Do you think you could stay until… eleven?”
“Uh… Yeah. Definitely.”
Briar hands me back my license and then holds out a name badge.
“I’m trying to convince the principal to do something like lanyards but for now, this is what we have.”
I put the sticker on my sweater, mindful of the sparkly bats on my chest. Then, she guides me out of the office and through several hallways until she unlocks the door to a room bigger than my apartment.
“The previous art teacher left it just like this… We’d hoped so much for her to come back, but her husband got deployed and she needed help with her kids. She moved out of state over the summer.”
I set my bag down on a table and start walking around. There was the teacher’s desk with the projector beside it. A shelf that housed various kinds of paints and two enormous paint-stained sinks. The brushes were stored in cups of all kinds, ceramic mugs and plastic cups, glass mason jars. This was heaven.
“So… I’ll leave you to it. The first class begins at 9.”
“Is there an attendance sheet or something?” I ask, suddenly remembering that there was more to this than painting.
Briar giggles, her cheeks flushing pink.
“There’s a book. But don’t worry about that today. I’ll send someone up with a sign in sheet for the kids.”
I nod, taking the leather jacket off.
“Thank you,” I say and she smiles, leaving me to my own devices.
*
The smell of barbecue is doing nothing to help how hungry I am. I step into the diner and go to my usual seat, waving at the owner who is already telling the cook that I’m here. I sit down with a long sigh, pulling my phone out and checking my messages. Two missed calls from Nesta. A text from Elain in our group chat. 57 messages in the group chat with Rhys, Lucien, Az and Cassian. I roll my eyes and ignore that. Then, there are the calls from unknown numbers, all of them within minutes of each other. I lock my phone and set it down, looking up when the bell at the door rang. My heart does leaps in my chest as Cassian looks my way, breaking into a smile as he walks over.
“Well, if it isn’t the new art teacher,” he says by way of greeting, pulling me in for a bear hug when I get to my feet.
“It was just today,” I remind him, “And hello to you, too.”
He flicks my nose before sitting down across from me. He smirks when he notices that I’m wearing his jacket. He takes off his own and rolls up the sleeves to his shirt.
“How did it go?” he asks, adjusting his watch.
“It was… terrifying.” He raises a brow but I smile. “Kids are fucking scary, Cas… And being responsible for 20 of them at once is just…”
“A nightmare?”
“A dream.”
Cas snorts.
“It’s been too long, Cas. I feel out of practice… But I started them with color theory and having them paint their own wheels… The second class was even bigger and it was just so much fun.”
Cassian is still smiling and I blush, grateful that our food is being placed before us.
“I haven’t seen you smile this much in a while, bunny.”
“I was smiling last night,” I quip, and happily reach for my strawberry milkshake.
“You were drunk.”
“All the same.”
Cassian would normally push the subject, I know, but he only has an hour and a half before he has to go back to the shop. And between proving a point and eating lunch, food will win every time.
“This isn’t over,” he says, stuffing fries into his mouth.
*
I toss my keys on the little table in the entrance hallway, kicking off my boots as I walk into the apartment. I set my bag down on the floor before I walk across the carpet to open the blinds. I look around the living room and internally kick myself for forgetting that my sisters are coming over today. Last weekend’s beer cans and empty boxes of pizza are still littering the floor and coffee table. Someone’s bra is hanging over the arm rest. Rhys managed to leave his socks under my couch, and as I pick them up, I make a mental note to bring up a ‘strip poker laundry basket’ for them to deposit their clothes when we play. I grab the bra and realize that it’s mine.
I start a load of laundry and wash all the dishes in the sink and around the apartment. Once I finish with that, I take out the trash which required two trips. When I get back to my apartment, I wash my hand and burn incense- dragon’s blood, Cassian’s favorite. I vacuum the carpet and sweep the entrance hall and kitchen but don’t bother mopping. The bathroom is miraculously clean, but my bed is a disaster. The fitted sheet is beginning to come off but I hear the doorbell and leave it alone, tying up my hair as I go to answer it.
“I thought you stopped smoking,” Nesta says as I kiss her cheek.
“I did.”
“Then what’s with the incense.”
“The neighbor was cooking fish again,” I lie, but it’s happened enough that Nesta easily believes me.
“Elain is stopping to bring dinner after she leaves work.”
“Are you thirsty?”
Nesta sets her purse and keys on the counter, shrugging off her trench coat. She looks as flawless as always.
“Feyre, we know that you haven’t gone for groceries in weeks.”
“But I have water.” I sound pathetic, but I am not going to tell her that I went food shopping and brought everything to Cassian’s house. He’s the better cook and I would rather drive to see him every night than burn dinner at home. I was never here as it was.
“We had a luncheon meeting, I’m alright for now.”
She sits down on the barstool and looks me up and down. I have paint on my jeans and shirt, and I’m still wearing my purple sweater with the bats tied around my waist. When I see her eye my socks, I start walking.
“I taught at the school this morning,” I say as I grab my bag off the floor. I bring it to the kitchen and start pulling out the palettes and brushes I want to thoroughly clean.
“Did you like it?”
“I did, honestly.”
For once, she doesn’t roll her eyes when I set the palettes in the sink. I turn on the water, grabbing the sponge set aside for my art supplies and the soap.
“And what did the school think?”
I blush at this. Nesta doesn’t do well with unknowns.
“Briar, the secretary, she says she’ll call me once she hears something,” I say, and before she can scowl, I add, “But the principal seemed really happy with what we did. They asked me to stay an extra hour… It was a lot of fun.”
“And if they ask you to come back, will you take the job?”
“It’s not a job, Nes… But I mean, if it came to that, of course.”
“You turned down teaching jobs to work at that bar and look how that turned out.”
“I was depressed, Nesta. Cut me some fucking slack.”
“You can’t expect Cassian to keep saving your ass, Feyre.”
“I don’t expect anything from anyone. Least of all Cassian.”
“It’s almost been a year –”
I set the palette in the drying rack a little harder than I mean to.
“Did you write that down in your calendar so you can remind me that Tamlin left? I know how long it’s been Nesta.”
“That’s not what I meant, and you know it. You can’t depend on Cassian forever.”
“Why do you hate him so much? He is always there for me- something you can’t say. Honestly, sometimes I have no idea what he saw in you.”
“I told him I was sorry.”
“You broke his heart and have the nerve to bitch about what he does for me. I love you, Nesta, but give me a fucking break.”
*
I am almost glad that Elain cancelled dinner. Nesta had left once I refused to listen to her empty apologies. But now, I’m hungry. And alone. You can’t expect Cassian to keep saving your ass, Feyre. I laugh at myself; my thumb is hovering over the voice call button under Cassian’s name. My eyes burn with tears and my throat feels like it is closing up. Did Nesta not understand how much I hated the fact that I’ve had to ask any of them for help?
I toss my phone across the sofa, hating that I am crying. Hating that almost a year has passed and my life is no better than it was when Tamlin left. Hating that Nesta seems to forget that she was able to finish college because I was the one working my ass off to keep us afloat. Hating that I’d let Tamlin convince me to leave my job- my career- just to leave me.
I breathe in deeply, letting it out as I press my fingers against my eyes. I know that I can’t drive like this. With a sniffle, I get my jacket and boots on. The more I move, the less I cry, and by the time I make it down the stairs, I only have a stuffy nose.
The owner of the corner store gives me a sympathetic smile when they see me walk in. I can’t return it, but I wave, going right to the fridge. I grab a beer, ignoring Nesta’s voice in my head, telling me how irresponsible this was. I grab another one just to shut her up.
“Your usual?” he asks as I near the counter.
“Uh… No. Surprise me.”
Tamlin and I would come here every few nights, always getting the same thing. I’m not sure what’s for dinner tonight, but I see him throw a soda and bag of chips in the bag and decide that I’m perfectly fine with that. I pay in cash and wish him a good night, hurrying back to my apartment.
I put on a game show and sit down on the sofa, taking everything out of the bag. Before I open the Styrofoam container, someone starts knocking on my door. I don’t have to ask who it is, but I am still caught off guard to find Cassian standing outside, holding a bag of take out.
“Cas… Hey.”
“Your phone dead?” he asks as I give him a quick kiss on the cheek and let him in.
“No… I went up the street.”
He sets his bag next to my food and sits down, taking off his jacket and tossing it.
“Az told me Ellie had to cancel dinner with you,” he says as he starts to take his food out of the bag. He grabs one of my beers and opens it. “Iliana got sent home sick from school.”
“Oh… What about Val?”
“I dropped him off at Rhysand’s before coming here.”
I make a face. “Stupid apartment and its stupid dog rules.”
“What’s for dinner?” he asks as I sit beside him.
“I don’t really know,” I reply. “I told him to surprise me.”
Cassian takes a drink of his beer and chuckles.
“Well. I’ve got Chinese.”
It’s a sandwich, that much I know. A sandwich Cassian tries to take the moment I hold it out to him.
“Bunny, please.”
“What is it?” I ask again, holding the sandwich up and away from him.
“It’s a tripleta. Chicken, beef, and pork with cheese and those potato chip fries. And the mayo-ketchup. I haven’t had one in forever! I’ll give you anything!”
I start laughing, as if I would ever say no to him.
“We’ll split it,” I say, laughing some more when he hugs me tight.
Cassian changes the channel to watch one of our favorite crime shows. I take my boots off and sit cross legged. He smiles when he sees the little ghosts on my socks and reaches down to pull his jeans up to show me that he’s wearing the exact same ones.
After we eat, I bring the empty containers to the garbage and come back to find Cassian sprawled out on the sofa. When he sees me, he holds out his arms to me and I walk over, letting him pull me into his arms. I rest my head against his chest, closing my eyes.
“Rhys says hello… He misses you.”
I giggle. “As if he didn’t freeze my phone texting us so many times.”
Cassian holds me a little tighter as he chuckles.
“You know how he gets when he thinks he’s being ignored.”
“He’s a brat.”
He laughs. “You’re telling me.”
I stretch out a bit and Cassian places one hand on the small of my back, the other on my arm where he begins to trace his fingers up and down bare skin.
“You alright?” he asks quietly. I don’t say anything at first but then I shake my head.
“I’m stuck,” I whisper. “What is wrong with me, Cas?”
“Nothing is wrong with you.”
The way he says it makes me want to believe him.
“What did Nesta say to you?” he asks and I sigh. “You only ever get like this when you talk to her.”
I cross my arms, resting my head against them to be able to look at him.
“She just… It’s been almost a year. And nothing has changed.”
“You really believe that?”
When I don’t answer, Cassian sighs.
“Last November, you couldn’t leave your bed. You didn’t eat. You didn’t even talk. You taught classes today, Feyre- you would have never let yourself even think of such a thing before.”
He’s right- I know that he’s right, but it doesn’t stop me from crying again. When I get up, Cassian follows suit and simply pulls me into his lap, cradling me against him.
“Things like this take time,” he says. “And I’m going to be there, for as long as it takes. You know that, right?”
“I can’t expect that of you,” I say before I can stop myself and Cas goes still.
“What do you mean?” he asks.
“I’m sorry… She just really got to me.”
“What did she say?”
Once I repeat her words, I feel completely ashamed of myself. I want the earth to swallow me whole when Cassian curls a finger under my chin and makes me look up at him.
“I love you, Feyre Archeron. And I don’t give a fuck what your sister thinks. You are my best friend, just because she refuses to lend you a hand, doesn’t mean that everyone else has to.” He brushes the tears away and tucks an errant lock of hair behind my ear.
“I love you, too.”
He presses a kiss to my forehead and I close my eyes, letting out a sigh.
“I’m always gonna be here for you, bunny.”
When he kisses me, I practically melt in his arms, but I still pull away.
“Cassian, you know I’m no good for you,” I say.
“If you weren’t good for me,” he says as his hands slide to my waist. “I wouldn’t be here.”
It’s a lie, we both know. So I kiss him, adjusting myself to straddle his lap.
“If we’re going to hurt… might as well be with each other, right?” I say, and he chuckles.
“Don’t use my own words against me.”
I kiss him, reaching back to untie his hair.
“Just this once,” I say in a terrible imitation of his voice. I run my fingers through his hair and he closes his eyes. He sighs, and the smile that blossoms on his face gives me butterflies.
When he opens his eyes, he smirks; he’s caught me staring.
“Hey, the second time was your doing,” he quips, tugging on the hem of my shirt and pulling up. I lift my arms and laugh as he tries to mimic me. “This time and no more.”
“What can I say? You make me feel alive,” I declare, blushing suddenly. I did not mean to say that out loud. Cassian pauses his attempt at undoing the hooks of my bra. I have no idea how to turn my words into a joke.
“Alive, huh?” he says softly. “That makes two of us.”
I don’t believe either of us are ready to unpack any of that. So I put my hands on his face and kiss him, and Cassian abandons my bra to slide his hands down to grab my ass. I shriek when he stands up, taking me with him.
“Asshole!” I shout, Cassian laughing as he walks towards my bedroom. He tosses me on the bed, walking over to turn a light on. When he turns to come back to me, I toss a pillow at him.
“Don’t start,” he warns, trying not to smile.
“Make me.”
Cassian chuckles at that and climbs on the bed, grabbing my ankle and pulling to him. He starts tickling me, and I have no strength to grab the other pillow and hit him with it.
“Stop it!” I managed to say through laughter.
“Make me,” Cassian says, mimicking me. But he still stops, grabbing me by the waist as he moves to lay on his back. My heart tightens in my chest at how light his eyes are. I reach out to brush his hair away from his eyes, then to trace the contours of his face.
“Plan on painting me?” he asks, smiling.
“Do you want me to?” I am out of breath.
Cassian traces his fingers up my spine and unhooks my bra.
“Not yet,” he replies and I laugh, leaning down to kiss him.
.
.
.
I had meant to put this out on like... Tuesday so by yesterday (actual Halloween) the fic would line up but fuck it.
Cassian and Feyre are my #1 crack ship (that isn’t Sesshomaru and Kagome). I might try to do the next few holidays as well. But for now, it’s based around Halloween. It was supposed to be a one off based off a song BUT it turned into this fluff fest. Also, the “bunny” nickname came from another thing I wrote and never posted in which when they were like fresh out of highschool, Feyre went on a trip with Cassian and the guys, their dad. She wanted to try out hunting and shot a rabbit and cried so much about it Cassian started calling her bunny cuz it made her mad. Then it stuck.
And then I couldn’t stop using it. I mean... he COULD call her Fey but no. Bunny. Also, remember how in my Elriel fic our Illyrians were basically like me and my family? Puerto Ricans from the mountains? We’re sticking with that.
I do have to separate it into like 4 parts because it’s like 30 Word pages long and I can’t imagine how terrible that would translate on Tumblr. <3
also, if you have a pairing request or whatever, I got you.

hxh RESUME
back at it again w/the hxh, heres my recap of the last few eps
ok so i totally forgot to recap that one ep at the end of the hunter exam arc lets see what i remember from like 3 wks ago lollll
i thiiiiink i left off in the middle of ep 21 lol. i really dont remember much tbh so im gonna skim the ep to refresh
exposition time! its so wild that if you lose ur hunter card That It like u cant get another or retake the exam hgabjdfuhasjf Ls
also the fact that you can sell it is rlly interesting
leorio & kurapika backing up gon as he confronts illumi again :’) good lil family
illumi u fool. gon is a shounen protag. he can do anything he sets his mind to
the fact that gon thanks illumi for telling him where killua is....hes literally THAT polite like...what a perfect boy
hisoka just fuckgin stepping out of the shadows....ok bitch
the fact that gon fucked up illumis arm that bad with one hand....boi is STRONK
AUGH AUGH AUGHHHH HISOKA IS SO CREEPY AUGHHH I HATE THIS BIIIITCH
ok but like is illumi implying that hisoka is a fr p*do bc uhhhhh thats so nasty oh lord. pls stay away from gon, and killua, and like everyone as a matter of fact
EWWWWWWWWWW I HATE HISOKA HES SO NASTY. PLS STOP MAKING P*RNO FACES IN RELATION TO 12 YR OLD BOYS.
no but rlly what IS hisoka gonna do now. im assuming he’ll show up p soon (tho probs not in the zoldyc arc like i thought bc its shorter than i thought)
ok the fact that they have the internet is hilariously wild to me for some reason....it just seems like this would be one of those fantasy shounen worlds with very little tech (a la one piece) but lol nope we can just google shit hvbhjdhjdfks
gon: it was fun when you beat me up for 3 hours and broke my arm! seeya dude!
i love gon he is so chill and doesnt seem to hold grudges except when it really matters (like hisoka and illumi)
hanzo has.....ninja business cards....thats amazing hvbhsdjkujfnd
dont worry pokkle, leorio was basically carried thru the hunter exam by various people and also won by default. he still deserves his license tho
an exotic game hunter sounds pretty cool! i wonder if we’ll see pokkle again. kinda doubt it? that sounds pretty firmly non-combat based, and therefore probably pretty far from any plot lol
so gons dad is a bigshot huh.....whatever hed be a bigger deal if he didnt abandon his son tbh
gon swinging his feet on the bench....sooo cute
so ging could restore a bunch of ruins but he couldnt raise his son...ok
im just gonna be bitter at this guy for abandoning the most perfect boy vhbhjfbsjhdhbfsk sorry dude but being a good hunter doesnt make up for being a shit father
gon is so precious ;_;
WHAT WAS SATOTZ GONNA SAY TO GON???
why does it look like theyre googling things on MS paint
ah yes, padokea, on the continent of Africa But Sideways
idk if i talked abt it before but the world map is WILD lmao i love how its all the continents/landmasses scrambled around.....im super curious abt that weird island in the top center of the map, thats the only thing that immediately sticks out as not having a real life equivalent
the music in this show is so charming :’) i love the main theme sm
gon is sooo precious i literally cant get over it. and his hurry to rescue killua is so sweet....and i love how naturally charming/charismatic gon is....pretty much everyone he meets likes him, especially leorio and kurapika, who basically adopted him after knowing him for like a day, and continue to be completely taken by him
ok wtf is satotz & co talking abt......do they know something abt ging that they arent allowed to tell gon???? shouldnt gon have access to the same info now that hes a hunter? i need ANSWERS
i bet this whole thing abt the hunter exam not rlly being over is a metaphor abt the hunter exam NEVER truly ending bc youre always being tested, or st
ok the ED continues to be So Much like especially the last shot where the 4 main characters look like theyre posing for a JC Penny catalog while the singer goes FULL metal-screamo
ok ruth and i just rewatched the next two eps woohoo
i love that there are tourist busses that take people to the front gates so they can like pose for pics and stuff vhbhjafdsfkj and its like ‘ah yes here are where the local assassins live!’ thats so funny yet it makes so much sense
i love that leorio passed tf out during the bus ride. big big mood
gon is so cute...hes like ok yes i understand that we’re not supposed to go in but i think they can make an exception for me bc im very polite.
those 2 dudes r so ugly and so dead god bless
that bigass buster sword....sir please
ruth and i rlly thot that the old guard guy was gonna turn out to be grandpa zoldyk or st lol
the fact that the dog managed to eat All their flesh but left some clothes....skill
also the dog is named mike but it sounds like the guy is calling him miku hvbjdfssk
this cant be the first time some morons have been killed here likeeee
i cant believe nobody has visited the zoldyk estate in 20 years damn they all rlly b havin no friends. depressing
the whole gates thing is wild. also that part where gon gets the math wrong on the weight.....BIG mood kiddo
ok the part where gons on the phone w/the butler is soooo good oh man. i love how gon just calmly dials the phone again after hes hung up on the first time and then YELLS....and leorio and kurapikas faces r so good
also the butler guy unfortunately has a point, it isnt foolproof that gon is here Legit....but he IS let him see his tiny bf :(
as ruth pointed out, the butler guy is reminiscent of kuro from one piece. same vibes
maybe if leorio was jacked like he is in the manga/1999 anime he couldve opened the gate that first time around....Ls
god i love this shows approach to Everything so far,....as ruth put it, half the time its like ‘oh wow they should do [x]/i wish theyd do [x] but ofc they wont cause its a shounen’ but then they DO do [x] and its like damn thats dope
anyways i love how gon is increasingly approaching situations with his Plucky Shounen Protag Attitude in full swing, and he pretty much gets shot down every time. BUT his general determination to see killua bc killuas his FRIEND and hes gonna RESCUE HIM is still a good and pure motivating force
like here, when hes climbing over the wall and hes like whatever i dont wanna have to deal w/being tested thats bullshit, i wanna see killua, my intentions are pure, im gonna try my luck with the dog....i was like ok yeah he’ll get over and like tame or defeat the dog and the guard will be suitably impressed bc nobodys ever done That before, and then gon will continue on to get killua
but NOPE instead the guard calls him down and explains that gon Will Die if he tries that, and then the guard will die too for letting that happen. and gon is like oh shit my actions have consequences for people other than me, wow.
and THEN the guard takes them in to meet the dog. and hot DAMN that is a scary creature. not even really a dog tbh. they did an excellent job making the dog Legit Scary and not just like, big and flashy looking....those eyes are so soulless, and the proportions are freaky
and the guard says exactly what i was thinking - that gon would use his Country Boy Woodland Creature Skills to workaround the dog....but then the subversion - this creature is NOTHING like the woodland critters gon is probably used to dealing with. theres no way gon stood a chance here. the guard just saved him from a really unfortunate death
i love all the Super Heavy Stuff in the servant house that seems so inconvenient vbhjdkfasjfld. also forgot to mention earlier but the guard guy being Absolutely Ripped was wild and kinda funny
training montage! gon continues to be so cute. and i love so much how leorio and kurapika are like no, you rest, we’ll take care of this. good parents!!!!
and then!!!! they sync up and use the power of gay love to almost open the gate. but then gon uses the power of Improbable Shounen Protag Healing Speed to toss that arm sling off and help out
i feel like leorio was side-eyeing gon like w8 a sec u broke that arm like a few days ago that aint right.....
oh man i almost forgot abt that scene with the zoldyks torturing killua :( :( this poor kid he doesnt deserve that
also mom zoldyck seems truly awful but i must say her aesthetic does fuck. the victorian-lookin outfit paired with the futuristic cyclops visor thing....excellent. also im betting this face bandages are from killua cutting her face
this family is so fucked up hvbsjdhjfbakdfn
killua telling his mom that gon is definitely gonna make it there :’) hes got such unshakable faith in his bf thats so good.....
back w/the gang, and immediately they run into more trouble in the form of the young girl butler, whose name i dont know, but i love her....her design is SO good oh man. a non-caricature black person? who also isnt sexualized? in MY anime??????
i love how gons approach to conflict is currently ‘let more powerful person beat me up for hours straight in hopes that they get tired or something idk bro’ like....i love him lol, is it in an effort to show how determined he is? he doesnt even try to dodge her blows or get around her....id be tryin to hop that fence lol
oh shit the tiny zoldyk kid from earlier is spying on them....she was w/the mom so im sure thats not good
when he punches the rock part and it breaks....strong boiiii
oh man that little flashback from when killua first came back and told her that he made a friend ;_; bruh
i love butler girl :( she wants to let gon but knows it isnt allowed....and as soon as she starts to waver BAM here comes mom zoldyck JFC that was so sudden and jarring....im assuming butler girl isnt dead cause that would be lame and anticlimactic
also IS THAT NEN??? NEN>>>??? NEN??? HM? NEN?????????
im so annoying abt nen i need to make one of those ‘is this a pigeon?’ memes w/’is this nen?’ bc thats me anytime anything remotely weird happens lmao
i do think its rlly nen this time tho
anyways shit is wild, cant wait to meet the full zoldyck family
PREDICTION CORNER:
as i said above i doubt hisoka will show up now bc this arc is a lot shorter than i anticipated. also im doubting that illumis even gonna show up honestly
i think we’re gonna have this OP for a while, as the part just at the end shows gon and hisoka fighting in what looks to be an arena, and ik the next arc is the heavens arena arc, which im assuming is the tournament arc....
also i have no idea what that weird building in the OP is but my guess is that its the building w/the heavens arena in it bc its tall and,,,,heaven
i predict there wont be much fighting in this little arc bc how tf else is it so short. at this point i rlly think gon is just gonna grab killua and go lmao. im super curious abt how thats gonna go down, considering that killua is currently strung up just bc he wont apologize...so i cant imagine his family would just let him leave w/gon. i wonder if killua will fight them, or if gons determination will impress them and then theyll let killua go (doubt it)
thats basically it....we’ll see abt the next few eps holla

EMT: “Vitals and BP are 76/55 a neighbor found her in her yard unresponsive. Unfortunately we could not find a form of identification, the police are working on the warrant to search the residents”
Dr.Lyn: “BP is low for her age. Any ideas why”
EMT: “ we found 3 bottles of alcohol at the residence”
Dr. Lyn: “well 3 bottles of beer could not have done her this much harm?”
EMT: “it wasn’t beer Doctor, it was 3bottles of Stella Rosa”
De. Lyn: “she’s going to need her stomach pumped, but before we continue, get radiology down her to preform an X-Ray to figure out why she can’t breath on her own.”
Nurse 1: Dr. Lyn Detective Mitchell is here to speak to you.
Dr. Lyn: great send him in.
Mitchell: Doctor we have contacted the owner of the residence he is on his way now. I need to speak to the patient when she regains her conscience.
Nurse 2: Dr. Lyn our patient blood pressure is dropping, radiology has confirmed that there vomit in her lungs.
Dr. Lyn: prepare suction tube to get it out of her lungs. Order an ultrasound. Look detective right now we are focusing on keeping her alive. If you could please get her information that would really help.
Nurse 2: Dr. Lyn you need to come see what’s on this ultra sound.
Dr. Lyn: Alright what is it.
Nurse 3: we went to get the vomit out of her lungs but we can’t preform the gastric suction, because we believe her appendix is about to rupture.
Dr. Lyn: let me see, run it over her right mid side. HER APPENDIX HAS RUPTURED WE NEED TO PREP HER FOR THE OR STAT! Let’s get her there now everyone let’s get her going, page Dr. Davis now.
Nurse and doctors rushed to get Emily into the OR. Meanwhile Calum was being held in the waiting room while he got his ID check, and so he can prove to the hospital that he knew who you are.
Mitchell: Calum Hood?
Calum: yes that’s me what is going on?
Mitchell: I’m Detective Mitchell I was called into this case when we found her at the residence. Now I need to ask you a few questions? Starting with her name, where she is from and any other information.
Calum: uhh okay yeah, her name is Emily Blanco, she from Las Vegas, and she is a full time student at UCLA, she on the girls soccer team.
Mitchell: and how do you know her?
Calum: she’s....... she’s my girlfriend, well ex girlfriend. Where is she I want to know I want to see her?
Mitchell: you’ll see her soon but as for right now you need to tell us how you can identify her tell us about her physical features so I and the hospital know that you are who you say she is.
Calum: okay. She has long dark almost black hair but it’s dyed blonde at the ends, She has brown eyes, a nose ring, a red dragon tattoo on her back, she 5’8, and she has a a birthmark on her left thigh.
Mitchell: alright I’m going to go work this information to the nurse and I want you to relax man. I’m going to give you my card if you have any other questions.
Calum: thank you detective.
——————————————————
I was just about to start my day when I got the call saying that there was an incident at my house. I never bothered changing the name to hers because I know she didn’t want to see me. She made that clear when I last saw her. I was going to give it some time before I would try to at lease speak with her. But I found myself not wanting too anymore.
Well now it felt like it was to late. I still don’t even know what happened. The lady I spoke with this morning only told me that they needed to search the house for their investigation, and that Emily was in the hospital and I needed to give out any information I know about her. Then that’s when I came directly here. I know that it’s Emily. But I myself, still have not processed what exactly is going on. I felt like I was in shock. I couldn’t hear anything, or feel anything. I now felt prisoner in my own conscience.
“Hey man is she okay? Have you heard anything yet?” Then my trance was broken. Ashton now appearing in my private waiting room. He didn’t look to well either. He seemed sad, worried, not his usual self. He damn well felt hundred times worse then I did. And that is what made me feel guilty.
“No man, they have not told me anything, I did get interrogated though. They’ve already built a case the house is getting searched right now” I don’t know why I felt this sort of way. I felt like I should not be here. Like I’m not that important. Her family should be here not me. I’m supposed to cry and feel anxious to hear from her, but I don’t. Now that is what made me a bad guy.
Ashton on the other hand was bitting his nails. A habit of his that he only does when he is anxious. Ashton was the first one to meet Emily. She was his roommate for 2 years before her and I got together. Ashton knew her from the inside out. Probably even better then I did. She was like his little sister. They never looked at each other anymore then that. Then when Emily and I started dating Ashton became distant with her. He both told us that he never wanted to get involved with our relationship because he strictly was never going to choose sides if we ever did split.
“Fuck man, I just hope she’s okay, I feel terrible for not checking in on her” he feels terrible about not speaking to her. About leaving her alone when she needed friends the most. About leaving her in the dark while I was out with someone new, all while she was trying her best to keep it alive. And Ashton was the one who felt terrible. I felt terrible for not caring. For feeling selfish and wanting to walk out right now. That how much of a piece of shit I am.
I took the past month of my life and moved on. I moved on so fast that I never let myself grieve over the lost of her love. Time and time again I let her down. She didn’t deserve that. She didn’t deserve a guy who spent his time lying and cheating on her. She didn’t deserve to wasting her time waiting up on me to come home, all while I was out sleeping in some other girls bed. She took care of me while I was sick. She picked me up from airports and parties when I couldn’t drive. She showed my parents the city of LA while I was working. She stayed through all the tours and was patience when we went on months with out seeing one another. She did it all. Just for me to forget about her so quick. I ditched her the moment things got complicated for me.
I wanted to so badly just get up and leave. To never step foot any near a place she was at. I wanted to permanently make myself forget that this ever happened. But if I leave now it would only prove I was the bad guy. I never use to let my ego control me. I never had much of one until I started seeing Haylee.
Haylee Bell, she was the blonde who took up most of my time. Haylee was my escape. I could fake that she needed me. That would be my ticket out of here. Ashton would have to buy it. I could just tell him that she was not feeling well and that I have to go see her. That would get me out of here. The only thing is that if the detectives came to find me here I wouldn’t be here.
“I got to go Ash, Haylee isn’t feeling to well”
“You’re just going to leave Cal? Aren’t you worried?”
“I am Ash. I just need to go handle Haylee first, I got to clear my mind up a bit” it wasn’t a complete lie. I was worried but I just needed to leave. Maybe if I convince myself that everything was fine it would turn out fine. I just needed to see Haylee.
————————————-
“Come on babe, you know you want too? Go to Steven he can get you a score” her sweet words had me at my knees. I needed to relieve my stress and get myself high. To get this weight lifted off my shoulders for just a few hours.
As always Steven met in the back ally by her apartment. It was always a causal deal. I take out the trash and see Steven taking out his. We exchange a quick hug and then we hand off. Nothing more. Then I make it back to Haylee’s.
“Good your back now let’s do this” words like that should excite someone, usually they’re tied to sex. But now for us. Ours excites us more. It’s like a kid opening his Christmas gifts and seeing that he got all that he wanted and more. This is what keeps me alive. Without it I would be down in the dumps. I first started it when I met Haylee. It was at a club on sunset Blvd. It was only two lines. Then as started seeing her more it tired in to three, then four, now five. As the effect starts to fade. That’s when I go in for another round. Nothing can bet the feeling then finally getting to fucking score off on drug.
I don’t love Haylee. But I now only use her as my anchor. I’m tied down here because she she knows the best dealers in LA. She’s a fucking decoy for my one love. I love cocaine.

Chapter 6
Warnings: Bad Writing, dark characters with bad intentions, angst?
It had been five years that you were divorced from Hvitserk Lothbrok, five years since you had signed the papers, and not a single member of his family had contacted you in any way, shape or form. Radio silence. You supposed it was better this way, you were happy that they had never poked around in your life too much, never checked up on you or gave you a reason to hide your child too closely.
Your son had grown fast, he was a blonde little boy with striking eyes, sometimes would still crawl into your bed in the night. He was the light of your life, he was smart, quick and as much of a climber as you had been.
You worked part time with one of the charities your father had helped build, it helped children in need, and tugged at your heartstrings. You had hired a nanny and had a housekeeper that worked with Vald in the daytime if he wasn’t at preschool, you were home by early afternoon to spend the rest of your day with your little sweet boy. Five years and you had created a home out of your father’s estate, a home for you, your son, and Arne, a life for yourself, you were as happy as you had remembered. You had even adjusted to the sticky heat and the loudness of the city.
You had celebrated your five-year divorce with Arne as you usually did with a nice dinner and champagne, after Vald had fallen asleep for the night. It was not a few weeks after that, that you received an upsetting phone call while at work.
“I arrived at your house to be told you weren’t there, which was very disappointing. When can I expect you back?” Aslaug’s voice was easily identified as you lifted the phone to your ear.
“What the fuck?” You sputtered out; taken aback by the woman you hadn’t heard from in years. What was she doing? Why now?
“I’ve waited long enough to meet my grandson, tell me when you’ll be home, or I’ll go back right now.” Aslaug meant business and you could tell.
“I’ll be home at 5,” you said, already standing to leave; it was 11am.
“Good,” she sounded pleased, “I’ll see you then,” and hung up the phone.
You rushed home to find everything perfectly in order; Vald was playing with Cora, his nanny and your housekeeper greeted you at the door. You rushed over to your son on the carpet and kissed his head, trying not to be too upsetting.
“Did someone come by here?” you asked your housekeeper.
“I was going to tell you once you came in,” she replied, “but yes, a woman came to the gate asking about you. Long brown hair, sharp features, good looking woman. Drove a gray Bugatti, license plate read ‘ALBK’. Do you want her allowed on the premises?” That was Aslaug, without a doubt.
“No.” You responded immediately, then thought of why you had rushed home. She knew about your son, could you keep her away forever? You scooped up your son and gave him kisses as you carried him into the nursery off your bedroom. The two of you could play in there, it was safer and had just as many toys.
Five o clock rolled around faster than you had expected, the day fell away spending time with your son, eating lunch, playing games, coloring pictures, and it had grown late. Your phone rang again, ‘No Caller ID’. You ignored it until it lit up and buzzed a second time.
“What do you want?” you hissed, standing and walking away from your son, nodding at Cora to stay close to him.
“I want to talk to you, you’ve stayed away long enough dear,” Aslaug purred through your phone. “If you don’t speak with me now, I’ll tell Hvitserk that his wife was blessed, and had his son all those years ago, and that you’ve been hiding him away from his true father. He won’t wait politely at these gates like I have.”
Your heart sank as she realized she was right. She hadn’t told him yet, and she was using it as leverage. If she told Hvitserk, you knew he wouldn’t rest until his son was in his arms. He had only walked out when he believed he no longer had an obligation to you. You had stayed away for a reason, you didn’t want to be used as a puppet, or kept around as an obligation anymore.
“I’ll tell them to let you in.” You hung up, and called the housekeeper, letting her know she was to let Aslaug in.
Not fast enough you scooped your son into your arms and held him close.
“There’s someone here in the living room,” your housekeeper popped around the corner, “she’s unhappy but seated with tea.”
“Thank you,” you said, giving your son to Cora and hurrying out of the room.
Always dressed in finery, Aslaug shone on your couch, radiating a smug energy, she seemed much too pleased to see you.
“It’s so good to see you again,” she greeted you, raising her teacup to you with a smile and taking a drink.
“What do you want?” you stood, arms crossed, not buying into her scheme. Instead, Aslaug nodded to the couch across from her and looked at you expectantly until you sat down.
“That’s not a very kind way to treat your guests, dear,” she reproached you; always a second mother trying to raise better children.
“I am here for you to listen to me. I am not here to be angry with you, though I have every right to be,” Aslaug looked stern, it felt as though she were scolding you. “You have been hiding my grandchild from me! I should be furious and drag you home right now. But I am not here to do that.” The woman went from shouting insults to a scary calm, you saw where Ivar got his temper from, and those few loose screws.
“What are you trying to say, Aslaug?” you asked her, “Why are you really here?” She was here for a reason, and you wanted to make her say it.
“I am here to take you home,” she said simply, sipping her tea.
“I’m home here, you can’t make me leave.” You were angry, “I want you out of my house!” You were standing again, pointing at the door. Aslaug didn’t make a move, just raised her eyebrow and waited until you sat down again.
“I’m not going anywhere with you, and neither is my child.” You looked her dead in the eyes. Kids had whispered that she was an evil witch when we were growing up, you were thinking that those rumors had some truth behind them.
“You can come home with me now, the easy way; you’ll come back home where you belong, your child will be raised with two loving parents in a safe, welcoming home and our family can forget these past few years of mistakes. If you don’t choose the easy way, I’ll still get you back home, one way or another.” Aslaug leaned closer still.
“Do you think I haven’t been watching you all these years, tracking what you do? I made you a promise, years ago, and now I’m making it come true. You’re coming home one way or another and so is my grandchild, my son’s son. You’re not going to take him away from us.”
You were praying that Cora had locked the doors to the nursery as you told her, terrified of this woman who was going to sink her claws into your child.
“Get out of my house.” You were shaking now, you had never been so upset in your life, this woman was threatening everything you had done in the last five years, the life you had built. “GET OUT!” You were screaming.
“Fine.” One word before Aslaug stood and made her way towards the door. “It’s your funeral.” She threw over her shoulder as her shoes clicked out the door.

transgender name & gender mark change resource post.
So now that everything is said and done, I want to talk about my experience about working to get my legal name and gender marker changed. I live in Florida, so prices and locations will obviously differ. Brevard County, Melbourne thankfully as all of their legal offices together in one section, so it’s easier to travel back and forth. This is in hopes that helps people to get it done as quickly as possible, as the information I found on an official Transgender Equality site was grossly outdated. I did these at the same time after my name my hearing was complete and all I was asked for at the SSA and DMV were for the court order and the affidavit. That’s literally it. It was done in 15 minutes once we were up.
DISCLAIMER: This may not be relative to all counties, states, etc. However, this is not a controversial case and your agents under no circumstances are legally obligated to give their opinion or refuse you because you are transgender. This is an every-day thing for them. If you ever wind up with a clearly troubled agent that refuses your name changed based on your gender orientation, file a complaint, I don’t know the process, but do something, holy hell.
IMPORTANT: If you are changing your female or male name to another that is for the opposite gender (say, Debra to Michael or vice versa), you will be asked to provide an affidavit from your physician, therapist, or - if you’d had top surgery in my case, from the acting surgeon who performed this surgery. I was given it after I was checked out as a patient, I imagine others do this as well. DO NOT LOSE THESE DOCUMENTS. The affidavit will also be used as proof for your gender change.
I. Filing for the name change.
I made the unfortunate error of looking to the internet for this information instead of asking those who created it in the first place. Of course, like me, you might be turned around as well and not be aware of the many branches of the government and who takes care of what.
First of all, the Court of Clerk is responsible for all of this, and there is no charge to go or do anything, especially if it’s to ask questions! Once I was at the desk, I explained that I actually had no idea what I was doing, but this (outdated) packet told me that this is where it all began. You have to go to the one in your county that you are currently residing in and be able to provide an address of that residency.
Everything begins with the Legal Petition for Name Change, or Petition for Legal Name Change, however it may be worded. You’re allowed to ask for a copy of this and I imagine, if it’s not free, a copy of the entire thing and everything document you’ll need to fill out (you may need to ask for more information on certain points like me) would be like... two bucks? Even certified copies of documents are inexpensive.
1. You will need to visit your local sheriff department and request your prints are taken for background check. This was about $20. You don’t have to tell them what it’s for other than a background check and legal name change.
A note: At any time you can have the file actually, well... filed. It ranges from county to county, state to state, but comes to somewhere around $250 to $401. I know this sounds expensive and yes it is, but I imagine this is so their time isn’t wasted for people filing for their name to be changed to “Batman V. Superman”. This is a serious legal matter.
2. This is usually the suggested first step as the background check can take from a week to a month, maybe more. I imagine it depends on the location and what their work looks like. This will be sent electronically as a sealed document to your Pro Se agent you will have submitted and filed everything with - this agent is still at the Court of Clerk and you will be directed to them. Once this is all there, along with everything else in the document filled out, your case will be listed “complete” and ready to proceed to the next step.
Another note: Everything in the packet is pretty basic, your name and history of work, asking if you’ve ever been bankrupt, etc. You will have to (at least I did) list as many residences you’ve lived at since you were born so this is something I went to the parents for. If you do not have this access, I imagine you can ask them if you can put the last one you remember. For example, I had some missing and I said neither my mother nor myself knew where it had been; this didn’t affect anything at all for us.
II. The hearing itself.
Once everything is uploaded to your case number, including the background check which again may take longer than expected so it’s advised to get it done ASAP and file along with it, no waiting game. You will be assigned a judge, a case number, and be asked to call the judge’s secretary (not sure of the actual job title, I’m sorry, Theresa) to arrange a court date.
I was told that you will not be able to choose your day or time.
Now, as I mentioned before, in Brevard all our legal branches are in one district, rather right across from one another or on a different floor. For me, on the date of my hearing, it was on the third floor of the same building as the Court of Clerk. I signed in, waited until I was called, and went in.
They might ask you to fill out the Final Disposition form as best to your knowledge (of course not signing for the judge, that would be stupid), I forgot to because I was in a rush but that’s alright, Theresa helped me out with that.
NO THIS WILL NOT TAKE PLACE IN THE OPEN COURTROOM YOU SEE IN SHOWS AND MOVIES. Or, God, I hope it doesn’t for any of you. That would be insane. It was simply in the honor’s chambers. She came out and sat down and welcomed me. The process consisted of handing her my information and affidavit. She read everything, it all looked good, and she asked me the usual questions after I swore that I would tell the whole truth, etc. I am doing this to escape bankrupty or any legal trouble? Things like that.
When asked to give a reason, you merely have to say that you are transitioning and looking to change your name to your now preferred. If they ask for any proof regarding your “trans-ness” (and I can’t imagine that is in the least bit professional) you are not obligated as far as I know? Because that’s most likely a breach of your own privacy and overall... shitty???
Once it was all squared away, she signed and wished me a good day! Theresa made me official copies to keep, and others were e-copied to my official files.
It was done.
II. The judge isn’t responsible for the gender marker.
This comes down to the SSA (Social Security Administration), and I had been turned around by this. It apparently isn’t a “legal” matter in terms of the judge needing to be convinced, as far as my research has led me. All they require is that affidavit, as well as your court order for name change if you’re doing them at the same time and... yeah, it was easier.
Again, no questions other than if I’m doing this to avoid yadda-yadda or have malicious intent. It took about... five minutes of my agent typing before going “okay, it’s done” and handing me a paper declaring that I had this done on said date. It didn’t cost anything.
She said it would be an “overnight refresh” for the system to log this actual change to be used for the DMV, but as far as I was concerned, it was official! And very, very shocking how smoothly and just... unbiased the interaction was. 24 to 48 hours is the suggested waiting period before going to the next part...
III. The DMV, getting that license/ID.
Okay, so the DMV can be horrible sometimes but not always and in regards to this, those agents still aren’t allowed to refuse your service based on you being transgender because you literally have legal documents and the SSA to prove them wrong.
All you have to say is you’re looking to update your name and gender marker on the license, you’ll be asked to provide the infamous documents we’re all learning to love to carry back and forth everywhere and it should be set. They might ask several times to check everything to make sure there are no mistakes.
If you’re updating your address from an old one, they’ll need two kinds of proof of this address, I don’t think it matters if your older name is on there, I remember that being stated. I literally did not have anything so she offered to, no joke, give me a basic level fishing license that would have my name and the address I wanted on it. This counts as an official document they can use.
So now I can properly go off-shore fishing, I guess.
I think for my initial ID it cost $20 to print but this time it was around $37, so obviously be prepared to pay for the new one. It’s nice and shiny and please look nice when you go because oh god, I had to ask politely if I could retake. My hair was a cowlick mess.
BEFORE I FORGET: Since they’ll clip your previous card to mark it’s no longer valid, it doesn’t hurt to ask if you should hang onto it in case you need to provide further proof of your “previous identity”.
IV. Other things you will need to update ASAP.
Obviously, you should have your birth certificate “amended” but I have not reached out to do this yet as I can file for it through the mail. And you should be able to anywhere, just look up where your closes Department of Vital Statistics is, what they’re called, visit their site to see if you can do it only, through mail, or go there for an appointment if that’s easier.
Note: I went through the process of filing for the name change but it didn’t give me the option of the gender marker change there so it’s probably best, if you go through mail or in person if you get the same as me on your branch’s site.
You’ll need all your lovely files packed up and ready to go, further proof of identification (SSN, I imagine, original certificate) and that’s why I would think going in person is better. Having those very vital documents being handled and wondering if it will end up in the wrong hands... yeah. I don’t know how long this process takes and I’m not really headed for it ASAP so okay maybe this one isn’t an emergency. As far as I know, the only thing a birth certificate is used for, or the reason you would need it amended, is to update your passport with new name, gender, etc. And yeah, oh, duh, put your passport on the list if you’ve got one.
I literally have no idea if everyone just has one or only needs one for if they’ve traveled out of the country before. My father is from England so we did a lot of bouncing back and forth.
NEXT!
Okay, this one actually is very important and should be done same-day or as soon as you can. PLEASE UPDATE YOUR NAME ON YOUR BANK ACCOUNT(S). I CAN’T IMAGINE WHAT THE HELL WOULD HAPPEN IF SUDDENLY YOU WEREN’T ABLE TO ACCESS IT. You will have to show everything to your bank branch to get it updated for your account, again it’s a very unbiased and easy action. I was even given an enthusiastic congratulations from the clerk, it was very nice. There was no charge, I was given temporary checks as a back-up if anyone needed proof of who owned the account.
They did not cancel my current card but a new one will be mailed to you at the address provided with it. That didn’t change for me so updating that is beyond me. I imagine it’s the same as the rest.
Less immediate things that come to mind are things like... subscriptions to delivered goods, Amazon, Ebay, Etsy, sites like that. Obviously your paypal but the name change request is pretty easy through this process since you can now just fill out the form. I haven’t done it to its entirety yet but I assume they’ll ask for the scan of your new ID.
IV. Other notes and general advice.
> If you post your exciting news online anywhere with a photo of your new license, I recommend censoring out your DOB, current address if it’s on the front, obviously, and at least most of your ID’s number. Seems small but it’s still information that strangers who past the photo can use.
> This may take longer than it did for me, but that doesn’t make it any less exhausting. I couldn’t sleep sometimes, I barely had an appetite as the days crept closer and the anxiety was pretty normal. It lingered once I got home with everything done... but it faded. What came next was PURE, UNADULTERATED EXHAUSTION. Please take whatever time off you need to recover or just regroup and let yourself breathe. I’m still waking up having no idea if the process was real or not and I am suffering from this weird disconnect of it all??
> Go crazy, celebrate! You did it!  I treated myself with ice cream and a nine-hour nap. For some this might be a mid-step or their last. I am a trans man who has yet to be on testosterone to for me, that feels like my “last” step in transitioning. There aren’t real milestones in transitioning, however, everyone goes at their own pace and does what feels comfortable to them.
Wherever you are in your journey, I’m very proud of you.
If you see information that may be confusing, please don’t hesitate to message me personally asking for clarification and I’ll try to get back to or ask someone who may know.
If you want to include fees and locations and advice regarding your own county and state, please, please do. As I said, this was only for Brevard County in Melbourne, FL. I can’t imagine it doesn’t differ here and there.
Good luck, everyone.

8/25/19 - 9/2/19
Last Sunday, we were invited to one housemate's boss's enormous and lush country home, which had a great pool. Some of the other Mercy volunteers were there as well and were super friendly. The way to the estate was pretty hilarious. First, our car stalled out, and then the supervisor gave us the most confusing directions ever. She initially sped off super far away on the highway even though she knew we were following her. Then she called us and said she was actually in back of us on the highway and that we should pull off at the nearest exit. Once we exited the highway, she called us and said she was actually in front of us the entire time, so we had to get back on the freeway. We originally really wanted to put the address into the GPS in case we got lost while following her (which we did), but she insisted that the address wouldn't show up on the GPS which was pretty sketchy. After getting off the highway a second time and following her down a dirt path, I joked about how she might be luring us to a killing field. This woman apparently bought her sprawling estate with all her divorce settlement money and paid for the property in cash, which I thought was pretty impressive. One of her employees who was a former member of the addiction treatment program joined us and had an "IAmSober" license plate, which I thought was funny.
I've decided to create an Instagram account (@everyday_mustardseed) with pictures uploaded every day that I work there. Work has been pretty nuts lately. Firstly, we doubled the student population overnight (originally 10, now 21 kids)-largest ever has been either 40-60 kids at once. I finally got to meet the LCSW who works there full-time, and she seems pretty nice and helpful for resolving all the trauma in the children. One day in particular was kind of grueling because a parent was nearly an hour late to pick up their kids. We have a protocol at the school that if a child/children are not picked up within a certain amount of time after school ends, then we have to legally call the police, which I really dreaded doing. Thankfully, the parents showed up after some time, which was a godsend because I could only watch so many old episodes of Wishbone with them while they repeatedly asked me where their mom was. I can't imagine the abandonment issues that these kids experience as compared to how I felt whenever my mom was even a fraction of a minute late when I was a kid (and she gave me no reason to feel that way). I've also assisted in compiling files for the intake forms, and I have been taking pictures of the kids for their files which has been surprisingly cute and wholesome. One little girl, however, tried to throw a gang sign in her picture, but I (very gently) grabbed her hand to hide it before the picture was taken.
I've noticed some very peculiar behaviors in the children at the school. For example, many sibling groups act very close and are almost at odds with the other sibling groups, as if they were engaged in turf wars, but I think this is another coping mechanism. I feel so sorry for the children who have no siblings since they are pretty much alone and unprotected from the other children's bullying. Many of the kids have expressed not wanting to leave at dismissal and feeling sad when the weekend approaches and school isn't in session. One of my co-workers has a theory about the children's behavior. He thinks that the most well-behaved children are the ones who are the most chronically homeless and more used to it due to them being so grateful for everything they are given, whereas the unrulier kids are newly exposed to the homeless lifestyle which is why they are acting out. One of the teachers spoke about how the more chronically homeless kids are "starved for knowledge" and relish any learning in the classroom.
A second car driven by a housemate has bitten the dust (the one that stalled on the way to the supervisor's estate on Sunday). It's unfortunate because this means we are even more restricted in terms of going places and visiting other JVC houses.
A fun community night activity took place this week, where we all shared our love language, Myers-Briggs personalities, enneagram numbers, and zodiac sign. My love language is acts of service/devotion, I am INFJ, Type 1, and a Gemini-Cancer cusp. So far, I have learned that there are the following zodiac signs in the house: Gemini-Cancer cusp, Pisces, Sagittarius, Taurus, Scorpio, Libra, and Aquarius. The personality types are: 1 INFJ (Advocate), 1 ENTJ (Commander), 2 ENFJ (Protagonist), and 3 ENFP (campaigner). The most common love language are: 5 quality time, 5 words of affirmation, 3 acts of service/devotion, 1 physical touch, and 1 gifts.
A little bit of scandalous news-apparently the JVC stipend is and has been too small for some time. It is a well-known secret in JVC history that many volunteers have side-jobs to make more money than just the monthly stipend. I remember hearing that my dad had a $100 stipend each month, which is kind of strange since that means the stipend has not been adjusted for inflation (aka it's much more expensive to exist today compared to back then). Additionally, California is notoriously expensive, so I'm wondering if the JVC should have made financial changes for stipends depending on how expensive the cost of living is in each city (for example, $100 a month would get you much further in Scranton than Sacramento). Furthermore, apparently the Jesuit Volunteer Corps of Northwest gives their volunteers $300 each month and has much better housing accommodations.
This weekend, we drove to Oakland/Berkeley, California, and stayed over at the JV house there. The party on Saturday was 60's/70's theme, and a couple other JV houses from around California came to stay over as well. We got there via car from a former JV and another car that a co-worker rented for us. Then, all together, we traveled to Baker Beach in San Francisco, where we sat on the beach, and I even saw a dead sea lion on the beach, which was understandably gross. P.S. part of the beach was nude which was super unexpected. When we were getting the alcohol for the party at the JV house, we were walking out of CVS, and a bunch of the worst-disguised undercover cops were waiting to card us again on the side walk. Gladly, we handed over our IDs, and one cop even asked one of us who the governor of Wisconsin is (none of us knew). When they were looking at my ID, the cop turned to me and asked suddenly "What year did you graduate high school?" and I immediately answered "2014". He gave it back to me reluctantly, and much to the horror of my housemates, I asked him, "Are you sure you don't want to check it again? I could be lying." That Saturday night, a couple of us went to Taco Bell after the party, and one of my housemates cracked a beer open in line there, and the poor cashier had to ask him to finish it, so he very unapologetically chugged it in front of everyone inside the Taco Bell, which was hilarious. On Friday, we attended a baseball game between the Sacramento Wild Cats and whatever the team name is of San Diego. We won, and there were fireworks, but more importantly, I got to drive an electric car for the first time ever (a fiat)!
Lastly, a funny story that I was told this week during community dinner involved a man who told everyone that he was married to a key chain. Since the person who told the story works at a mental health facility, they were not too disturbed by this fact, but they were surprised when eventually the man who was apparently married to a key chain brought in an actual wife one day (who or what is the key chain???)! Another funny occurrence happened to my housemate who works in a kindergarten classroom. They were in the middle of a lesson, and one child raised their hand. The teacher called on them, and they said simply, "My birthday was on Friday." The teacher replied, "I know. We celebrated." She waited a moment and then said, "Anything else?" and the student said "No." I laugh every time I think of this story.
Peace and blessings,
MK
