grian is really embracing his watcher side, huh... he is hungry. he's spending so much of his time recklessly lining up dominoes, only for all of them to collapse on top of him. all three of his lives were lost setting up traps for someone else but it would be a lie to say they weren't for him, too; he said it himself. he doesn't care who the reds kill, so long as they do it. so long as he watches. because he needs it. he doesn't even truly care if he dies in the process anymore.

and this is proof that he's losing himself in it— bloodlust, that is, and his need to be its catalyst— because the lack of regard he's showing for his own life is spectacularly uncharacteristic of him. his need for control has just overwhelmed him. he's so desperate this season that it's actually dripping from him and it's driving me CRAZY. with all of this pent up murderous rage he's going to be HORRIFYING once he's red and can lash out with no holds barred

but that's exactly why he can never just watch anymore, isn't it? he dies and immediately vows to kill jimmy and scar until they're nothing. he feeds on control so much that it isn't enough to pull the strings of fate from above; he has to take care of it all himself, squeeze the beating heart of it in his warm, blood-soaked hands.

i don't know, this is all over the place. I really just can't wait until he's on his final life, frantic and maniacal as he perfectly enacts all these brilliant plans of his that everyone around him keeps butchering <3

no because really, i think stede is operating in a way he thinks will win him respect. i think he's operating in a way he thinks is the expectation. i don't think he likes it, and i don't think it's "him," but i think he enjoys the positive reinforcement from everyone around him. he's literally never had that before in his life.

he was bullied as a child for what he enjoyed. he was cast aside by his father for being himself. the crew threatened to mutiny against him or even just flat-out kill him because he was too "weak."

and here he is trying to pull himself up out of maelstrom of mistakes. "he's been a failure his whole life." he's trying to do everything he can to rectify that. he wants to be the lighthouse for his crew. he wants to be a good captain. he wants to be a good pirate. he wants to be a good lover. he wants to be something.

and he was actually getting there himself--he just didn't realize it. listening to his crew more, showing them kindness, leading them when they were lost and had no place to go, putting his own grief on hold and taking back the revenge...

he was getting there! but still, he was surrounded by those haunting expectations, by the fear that it wasn't enough.

the whole conversation between he and ed where ed is encouraging him to command respect/be tougher. the whole conversation between he and izzy where izzy says he's "never met anyone with a total lack of skills." zheng saying that she didn't "conquer china by letting people go on and on about their feelings."

not to mention the goading from ned. "once you kill me, you're a real pirate. you're not an amateur." "see? that's why he likes you. your bumbling amateur status."

it all keeps swimming circles around him, looming above his head like a shadow.

he thinks he has something more to prove. he thinks he has to be more. even though his own methods work, like ned's crew turning on him simply because stede showed kindness and understanding, all these phantoms keep telling him it isn't enough and that the other methods are more effective.

because he kills, and looks visibly shaken by it, but his crew cheers. he grabs ed by the collar despite them wanting to take things slow, and they grow intimate. he walks into jackie'z after it all, a place where he was previously banished from, and is treated like a sort of pirate hero.

it's not him. "we don't just banish people, do we? that's not us."

but it's encouraged. it's celebrated. so he thinks it should be.

Currently rotating the reunion scene from ep4 around in my head like a rotisserie chicken (as one does), and there’s one thing that’s really standing out to me.

Hunter didn’t immediately step outside when that stolen freighter landed.

He and Wrecker have crossed the galaxy 5 times in almost 6 months, dead end after dead end, disappointment after disappointment. It’s got to be soul crushing, and then out of fucking nowhere they get a transmission telling them to go to that moon where they dropped supplies for Ryloth that one time, something Omega surely remembers, so it can’t be a coincidence, right? But it’s just too good to be true. No planning a prison break? No Hemlock? She just made her way back? What are the odds they’re being tricked?

So Hunter waited because he couldn’t stand to face the disappointment himself. (And Wrecker goes out there because he’s still hopeful and excited.)

Imagine the two of them on the Marauder as that ship lands and the stairs come down. Wrecker goes to the door and notices that Hunter is still sitting and typing something, and asks, “Are ya coming, Hunter?” And Hunter just looks at him and says, “Yeah, in a minute.” Wrecker gets it and doesn’t push (emotionally intelligent Wrecker ftw).

Then Hunter listens as Wrecker shouts, “Now there’s a sight!” And with those enhanced senses (who knows, that’s been dodgy at best this season) he probably hears Omega say, “Wrecker! I knew you’d show up.”

And then, he takes yet another moment to collect himself because holy shit it’s real this time, she’s really here.

Finally, Hunter goes out there, skips a bunch of stairs, and gives his kid the biggest hug.

And I just aaahhhhhhhh it’s so good! So intentional! I’m going to be thinking (translation: crying) about this for a long time.
