I have finally... FINALLY finished this. This was meant to be a relatively quick thing, but of course because I have literally zero chill it took upwards of ten hours across three days.

Under the cut are some ramblings about symbolism and my process, as well as the original redraw "meme" this is based on:

So this originally started as another ship, but then I realised that longing look at something you can never have is very Reki post episode 6. I deliberately chose a cool toned colour scheme for the whole picture except Reki, so he'd stands apart more and look out of place to visualise how he feels that second half of the series.

I also initially planned to make Langa's scarf blue (like i think it is in canon, in those baby pics? I didn't check because I scrapped that idea before I would have needed to) but then decided against it for two reasons:

1. it would've been too much blue, and a separation between the light tones of the head and torso areas divides up the picture nicely.

and 2. I wanted the very dark tone to be somewhat sinister and give the impression of a noose around his neck, symbolising Adam's hold on him :)

Partway through the lineart i made some very subtle changes to Langa's expression compared to the original billboard, which just looks radiantly joyful. To fit Langa's conflicted feelings (on one hand he's thrilled to be skating against talented skaters in the tournament, but on the other he's anxious and worried about having made a mistake and drifting apart from Reki). To show those things, I gave his eyebrow a little quirk that creates a little wrinkle, and the corner of his mouth a tiny line of tension.

I also really liked the "It's like burning" line from the billboard, and thought it fit really well with Reki's pain as well. Even among all the snow, what he feels is burning him up. And as @piiloh-case pointed out to me, strong temperatures always feel like burning, whether they're hot or cold.

This last thing has nothing to do with symbolism, but I tried out a new colouring/shading style and I'm really liking it :) I think I'm not made for the soft shaded look, so I might go with this in the future.

How did you find/make your aesthetic profiles of the gods in your book?

i was gonna link you to my guide that i posted a long time ago, but i realized how old it was and that it was lacking some details...... 💀

so i'm gonna do a new one that hopefully helps a bit more!!!!

websites used: pinterest, tumblr, canva, deviantart, & photopea!

first off, i find the pictures from sites like pinterest and tumblr. the color schemes of each pic need to be somewhat close to each other (but it doesn't always have to be like that depending on the psd you'll be using later on)

i'm gonna use hades for example. this is the first pic i find of him lol:

the most dominant color here is purple, with some tinted ivory from his skin, and brown in the background, so the next few pics i find should have somewhat similar colors too, or they should at least be purple cuz it's the most frequent color here

here are the next few photos i found:

they don't look perfect, but we can always individually tweak the colors and shades later

i download the photos and then i go to canva. the site provides you with templates that you can use but since i only got three pics, i chose the "email header" option.

(for those wondering which template i used for the bigger ones you see in the first chapter with percy and the yans, i don't use a template. i just use "custom size" and type in "800 x 800 px")

go to the sidebar, click "elements" then scroll down for "grids" and then find the one with 3 parts. i reduced the spacing between the photos to zero.

then i upload all 3 photos and put them in the squares. because they're not exactly the closest in color schemes, i individually edit them until i'm satisfied.

canva provides filters that you can use, but i always find it best to toggle with the adjustments like brightness, contrast, saturation, etc.

here's what i ended up with so far:

again, not exactly perfect, but whatever

now that i'm done, i go up to "share", select "download", and increase the size by 1.5 (that's 900 x 300 px). idk why, but for some reason, the quality looks better when you enlarge the size before download.

once that's done, i download the whole thing.

(keep the file type as "png" btw)

then i go over to photopea and upload my graphic. it'll look like this:

in another tab (not the photopea tab, but like... the actual tab of whatever browser ur using), i can find a bunch of psd colorings in deviantart. since i want one that's specifically purple, i just search up "psd coloring purple"

and i get all this:

i pick whichever one i think might look best and download it.

then i head back to photopea.

at the top, click on "file" and the new psd you just downloaded, and it'll show up in a new tab.

stay on that tab, go up to "layer" -> "layer into" and select the first tab where the graphic's at. this applies the psd coloring onto ur graphic.

over at the side, there's something called "opacity: ___%" you can toggle with that if the psd is too overwhelming, so you can lessen it by dragging it down if you need to.

once you're satisfied, click "file" -> "export as" -> "png" and it'll be downloaded.

and that's pretty much it!

THIS CAN BE A LONG PROCESS THOUGH! literally in every step, you might end up going back and changing stuff.

for example, i do not like the right photo that i selected. the purple is too bold compared to the purple shades in the left and center photo. i'd probably go aaaalll the way back to the earlier steps by returning to pinterest to find a better photo

or maybe you don't like the psd you picked. if that's the case, delete the photopea tabs and redo the above steps with a different psd.

it can be a bit annoying if ur the perfectionist type and have to go back again and again 😅

but anyway, psd coloring's are great. i'm looking back at the og versions of all the graphics i made (og as in, before i applied the psd colorings) and they're soooo different from the finished pieces

The first course of action was to ask an expert in nonbinary, my nonbinary ex. They suggested "that asymmetrical car from the commercial", and I immediately realized, oh right, the Hyundai Veloster!

Literally rejecting the binary between hatchbacks with rear doors and hatchbacks with none, as illustrated by quite a commercial if I do say so myself.

As the ad hints, yes indeed the Veloster's rear door was always opposite the driver's side, including in right hand drive cars - meaning yes, the Veloster's rear door changes side with the market it's sold in...

...a bit like what my ex was actually referring to: the third generation Nissan Cube, another asymmetric vehicle with two symmetrical versions, as explained in my Pike Cars post (and indeed, the Cube also got a spectacular campaign - you really gotta go have a look at that post right there).

So, having gotten their suggestion (and another unrelated pick that they did however approve...)

...I set about hitting up the Discord for completion's sake, where @chevyventure gave a couple suggestions of his own: the Kia Soul.

And let me tell you, the commercials just keep getting weirder.

My rendering process hmmmm.... I will try to sum up the thoughts that come to my mind as I'm writing this, though I might be missing some proper vocabulary

The first thing that surfaced in my brain is exposition within a picture. This is what the picture focuses on - things in the light, or things in the shadow, and how much details each of these two receive rendering wise.

It's basically like taking a photo with a phone - if you click on a bright thing (say, a window), the phone will automatically adjust the exposition and all the other bright things will be visible(lotta detail), but the shadows will become turbo dark (no details). Alternatively, if you click on a dark shadow, all the dark things will become visible (details) but the hypothetical window will become blown out and turbo white (no details). You can basically have one or the other but never both. (or I guess you can who am I to tell anyone how to make art yanno no rules up in this house)

anyway, so for example, this pic^ focuses on the things in the dark, meaning everything in direct light receives no details.

and this pic^ focuses on the light and so all the cast shadows are pitch black.

One other thing that I learned a longass time ago was that edges(and shapes) are arguably the most important part of an object within a picture. Clean edges immediately call for focus, while softer or vague edges allow things to fade in the background and communicate the idea of a thing rather than showing you the thing itself. On a related note note, clean edges also make work in progress appear about 25% more finished.

I guess this all has to do with contrast and contrast can be created in many ways - edges (soft/sharp), colours (eg. red fish in a blue sea), spacing (objects being grouped vs. a single object), the amount of detail per object etc etc etc. and all of these can be controlled to solve specific issues within a picture.

In short, if a thing is important aka the focal point, make it stand out - sharp edges, details, specific colours and a lighting situation that make it pop. And if a thing isn't too important leave it vague, communicate the idea of it rather than focusing on drawing it.

On the note of things being sharp, a thing that I always swore by is, if there are eyes in the picture those eyes better be d-o-n-e. Pristine. People will look at the eyes, eyes communicate 90% of emotion, the eyes are the it girl of the picture forever and always, nobody will look at the wonky foot, they will look at the eyes and judge the quality of the picture. If the eyes are shit the picture is shit. (I'm exaggerating but fr. eyes are a big deal.). They don't have to be turbo rendered or physically mad sharp but they need to be done. Whatever that means, take what you will from my word soup.

One thing that I've become a big fan of over the years is the concept of wear and tear. This has to do with texturing things in pictures and I looooooooooooooooove thinking about ways items are used in order to create bumps and scratches that can be featured.

It always makes things look like they belong to someone?? It makes them real? Like the tip of that bone. that bone has been places. That belt has seen use. That bag carried things. Like yanno?? I looove things that chip and have nicks. Give me wood and I'll put a dent in it I swear.

And I thing the latest thing that I'm trying to incorporate within my art, though I haven't had much time or opportunity to do it in personal art because of work, is colour variation within each element.

Like his face. His skin is obviously "beige" but you will see red, and blue and yellow and green in there too. Stuff like that yanno? I'm quite interested in taking this further in my future paintings. I'm still learning how to push what, where and how but ayyy issa journey I'll happily embark on.

And of course apart from all that it's the usual jazz, working on anatomy composition perspective doing it a lot over and over again babababababa and so on and so forth.

I haven't had much opportunity to paint since I started working on the comic last year but it had it own set of challenges for me. Linework is a completely different kind of rodeo and I've improved in different departments a lot and I'd be happy to bring those things into my paintings when I have the chance. I feel like I'm at a point where I know a lot more than what I've had the opportunity to put on paper, it feels exciting!

DAY 84 - EARTHLY DELIGHTS (Click for better quality)

I actually think this might be a bit of a longer passage, since I kinda need to actually explain this. The actual meaning behind The Garden of Earthly Delights seems to be pretty unknown, but the picture itself does depict what seems to be the Garden of Eden, Earth and humans, and then Hell in the order from left to right.

In order to match this, I turned the panel depicting earth into the base ghost zone, the three eyes in the top portal conveying that this is where the Ancients, Zoneborne, and Undead typically roam. The right panel shows a void of sorts, since ghosts simply stop existing when they fade, their ‘Hell’ being simple darkness. Finally, the right panel shows the Observants being the upper world of the Infinite Realms, shown to be the judge and jury of good and evil in the Realms, while All, the Ancient of Ancients (Basically God) keeps them in line, shown by the giant eye watching the singular Observant shown.

Anyways, this is kinda me ranting about my interpretations with fanon, and just my own thoughts while drawing this. I hope you like this! :D

I will not apologize for how crazy I went with Kazuramaru, I just want you guys to see the full extent of how awful the Iguro family is

Story: Hachizo island. A dumping ground for criminals, convicts, or outcasts that simply have nowhere else to go. & the home of the most vile, notorious, & brutal family of only women. The Iguro family. No one ever dares to step foot on their property in fears of something happening. They are a bad omen in every sense of the word. Unfortunately, word quickly spread of the highest positioned woman & mother of the family, Hebiko Iguro, trapped a husband to force him to conceive children. Kazuramaru. His time there was clear he was not a husband, but a breeding tool. If he were to step out of line, he would be fed to the serpent demon they worshipped. Scylla. He spent years in a cage & only let out of their for his wife to......"share his spoils". Years went by, & after finding out the clan had their first boy, Kazuramaru fought with everything in his power to take him away from that clan, but Hebiko stopped him, & Kazuramaru snapped & lashed out at his "wife". Wanting her to feel the same abuse she out him through. However, Scylla was none too pleased about him hurting his "wife". So, she took that chance to try & have her treat. She had his blood before, when it was offered to her from his arm, she'd be delighted to have the rest. Although, Kazuramaru grabbed a dagger that was in reach & sliced the scaly demon across her eyes to get her off. Taking this small window of time to escape the estate completely. He WILL be back for his son, though. He was there, dagger in the pocket of his dirty kimono robe, which was the only thing covering him. He tried to walk & find a way to a safer part of this island, but his body was to the edge. He tried to fight against the growing dizziness & his vision fading in & out.....but, he eventually lost that war.

Hours went by, & eventually, your oc comes around. Not a criminal, not one of the Iguro women, not even Scylla trying to finish what she started, even though she was still mad about that. Just a normal person who simply wanted to help. Your oc found him laying there, completely blacked out & unresponsive, but still alive. After trying to see if he would wake up, they made up their mind to help him. You couldn't leave him here, since a convict might come by & take advantage of the vulnerable man, or an animal would think he's carrion. So, they hoisted him onto their back & took him to their home.

Now the man was just laying there, on the futon with ragged & faint breathing. He looked just as awful as he feels. But, your oc is determined to help him recover. Since he'll need all the strength he can get when he goes back for his son.

Upright: renewal, hope, end of a destructive period Reversed: disconnection, despair, overwhelmed by challenges faced

A far too detailed reading of this card below

The star appears in a time of vulnerability as you have to be open to believing in more than what has been. In traditional decks (and here) this vulnerability is depicted by having naked figures. The one large star represents the core of Cam's being, which comes across as hopeful and warm even after suffering a great loss (at least to me it does). Cam's bow is unstrung, to show whilst capable of destruction/violence they are unwilling.

Traditionally this card depicts running water to show the flow of the unconscious and the conscious and that they need to be in balance with one another. Water didn't fit so here the universe/night sky is flowing between Cam and Dagger seeking balance. This card is also about balancing practicality with intuition, I think Cam and Dagger could balance each other nicely. Where as Cam's body language is very open (for honestly), Dagger's is much more guarded and she is gripping her weapon ready to use it.

Upright Meaning - The Star is after card after The Tower in most tarot decks, so can signify the end of a destructive time or an end of harsh challenges that you have endured of late. These challenges may have cut to the core of your being forcing you to acknowledge who you really are, giving you a new sense of self. With this new understanding of your self you are entering into a time of important personal growth, but from a place of peace and calm. You will learn that dreams can become reality.

Now is a good time to be honest with yourself about who you want to be and make the changes needed to transform into that person. Now is the time to get rid of limiting beliefs or deceptions and live as you. During this time be open to new ideas and the possibility of rediscovery.

Reversed Meaning - The Star reversed shows up when you are feeling that there is no hope or purpose in the world. You may feel overwhelmed by challenges and uninspired by your day to day (either work, hobbies, relationships ect.). Maybe a project isn't panning out as planned and you are wondering whether it is time to cut your losses and just move on.

This card often shows up when you need to align/realign your daily life with your own core values. Take the time to step back before your burn yourself out trying to push through the challenges. Whilst everyone's version of reenergising looks different, being near water helps most people.

The Star reversed can also be a warning that if you don't take time to realign now you run the risk of being overwhelmed by challenges and collapsing in on yourself (shown by Cam and Dagger looking like they are falling when this card is reversed , compared to jumping when upright).

This is just my interpretation of the characters so it might be different to how they were intended or how others see them.

Daniel from IAS Labs dropped me an email about updating his 1975 Brasilia and its front suspension. He used the word "hacked" in his initial email. I wasn't ready for the pictures that came back.

If ANY experience, for reference, I have 21+ years, resonates with you, head this warning. If you hire someone and you don't vet their work, you could actually hand money over for this kind of work. With that said, Daniel asked for the PRO's expertise on what it would update this Brasilia and bring safety, enjoyment, and quality of ride, back to the forefront of this Classic VW. The Answer. The Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam.

With the vehicle having cosmic wheels and the current 5" narrowed beam, Daniel was having rubbing problem on the inner fenderwells and he also did not like how much it tucked inside the fenders. We opted to do the 2" narrowed version to check as many boxes as possible. Here are the specs on the beam;

The BEST way to add Air Ride to a Classic Volkswagen Type 1 with ball joint front suspension (1966 through 1977), is by installing a Stage 2 PRObuilt Beam. If you are going for the dropped look and want to run either Airkewld's GEN 2 Disc Brake kit or your factory drums opt for the DRUM Drop Spindles. If you keep your Factory Disc Brakes (4 lug), opt for the DISC Drop Spindles. If you are keeping the drop moderate, a stock height spindle for the drum or factory disc is available. San is so disproportionately passionate about things and I love that so much. He’s such a sensitive person like, the slightest upset really seems to hit him and make him speak up which is a beautiful thing, he seems like someone who really wouldn’t stand to let someone get pushed around, but also a sad thing - because being so empathetic and sensitive can be tough sometimes. But they all seem to support each other well, so I am sure he’s got enough members around to keep him from getting too lost in the feelings.

Jongho is 100% the funniest member purely because of how his humor hits. It’s very sudden, out of the blue and very dry, which is right up my alley. He uses intelligence and sarcasm as humor without being overly mean about it, and it’s such a delightful contrast to some of the other members’ more juvenile jokes or physical humor. The group really does have it all in every way.

Oh my fucking god don’t get me started on the serial fanmeet callers omfg. My friends and I firmly think there should be a limit, like max 1-2 calls per comeback, let new fans get a chance. Because what happens is it’s all these big GOMs that take advantage of the situation and keep the calls to themselves rather than giving back to the people that HELPED them get them. I am friends with a couple smaller GOMs here in my state and what they do is if they win more than one or two calls over a comeback, they end up raffling off the extra call(s) to their buyers - so anyone that wants to have their name added who’s bought from the GO that the call is from gets a chance to get their name drawn. I think that’s so much more fair and I feel like other GOMs should do that, esp the ones that do have 200+ albums per order and pretty much a guaranteed fancall.

Oh the series is so delightful. I haven’t watched season 2 yet - I’m hesitant bc I’ve heard it ends sad and with the current Hollywood writer’s strikes it’s a question mark on when the next season will be out - but I will watch it soon, I have every reason to believe it’s just as good as the first though, Gaiman being so deeply involved in it helps a lot. He’s such a good writer, one of my favorites. I’m going through s1 with my kiddo slowly.

I saw that about Jongho, poor thing - It seems to be connected to his earlier injury. Those meniscus tears are awful to heal from without surgery - and even with it it can be tough bc of how much stress his legs are under for his job; hopefully he’ll be able to take some time off like you mentioned. After this concert tour hopefully they can all take a short hiatus/break and recover before the next one. (I know I’m wishing for a miracle but)
