Fikile Malikongwa Discusses Her Debut Short Film And Becoming A Creative

Fikile Malikongwa is a filmmaker, model and creative based in London, She recently released her first short film 'Convictions Of An Empath' which debuted at the Raindance Film Festival. In this conversation, we talk to her about the process of producing her film, being in the creative collective 'WISE', her favourite movies and music and much more.

Would you say you knew early on in your childhood that you wanted to be an artist or is it something that you learned later on?

It was definitely an early inclination as a child. I’ve always been naturally curious & constructive and imaginative. That is the heart of who I am as a person . Contrary to what people immediately see, I’m a very guarded and quiet individual and I do tend to get shy. I have never been the best at saying what’s on my mind when one first meets me. When I’m creating, when I write or communicate a visual or even a sonic idea, is when I start to feel my most confident. I just soar.

When and how did you move to London?

I first got to London in 2022 for about 3 months to complete a short directing course. After a very painful waiting period at home,I got the chance to relocate here at the end of September 2023, to complete my BA in film practices.

How is being a creative in London compared to Botswana?

I would say it is different but the tasks and craft of the game remain the same. The audiences can be wider and it is exciting but you still have to fight to get your foot in the door and be taken seriously. The privilege of Gaborone having a smaller community is the immediate reach of your art. But this is a chapter I’m very grateful for. It really means a lot to me, to be confident enough to share what I’m working on now. I'd just like to relate to people more.

How did you learn filmmaking and writing, did you go to school or are you self-taught?

With the script work, I’ve been writing since I was young. Creative writing was a strength of mine in primary school. Editing clips and making use of overlays or effects for personal projects is also something I’ve always been fond of. I was actually interested in theatre and acting before I realised how much I would really love to produce/direct my own work. Drama is just my first love. After graduating high school is when I familiarised myself with editing softwares, the primary ideas of continuity in scenes and different cuts, insert shots, how tedious grading and sound engineering can be. What writing a script for the camera looks like and how actors need to be spoken to. I learnt that sort of work when I enrolled in a film institution in New York after high school. I’ve enjoyed being a sponge to this kind of world. I’m very new it and I'm just getting started really.

Around 2021/2022, we were introduced to ‘’WISE STUDIOS’’ a collective you are a part of, what is the story behind it?

“WISE” primarily stands for “With Intelligence, Souls Exceed”. The first shoot that we ever brought to life, with the computer monitors was actually the first time that all of us met and spoken in person. The idea of the collective was really thought of by my homies, whom I love dearly. WISE is essentially a creative agency with the expanse for creative freedom. We wanted to start something cool together and we share the same love for multimedia.

Who or what would say has influenced the way you approach your creative process?

I think a lot of my youthful interests and surroundings have influenced me. All of the non-intellectual artsy stuff. I was a very emotional child and I’m a very emotional young woman. I like nostalgic and romantic and painful palettes of life, wherever they lie. Being a young African female creative, yearning for this idea of a fleeting career in film, it is very scary but these kinds of challenges excite me. I’ve always been ambitious and I’ve never been one to take a break from creating, even when I'm at my lowest. My friends at home inspire me. The music I listen to and the conversations I have with them about our experiences inspire me.

You recently released a very captivating short film "Convictions of An Empath", how closely do you relate to such an emotionally grabbing story?

I relate very closely to this first short release. I actually first got to know the word “conviction(s)” in a therapy session about two years ago. I learnt that I often lacked “self-conviction” when I spoke about my own experiences or how I've felt about something that I’ve seen or something that has happened to me. And the word empath has always stuck with me because I’m known to be that very understanding person in other people’s lives. The script was hard to flush out because it is a personal piece, but I wanted to focus on the concepts of forgiveness and how non-linear that can be in intimate relationships. Forgiveness does not look the same to everyone. Sometimes it means nothing, sometimes it means everything. I figured that if I want to debut a first film, it had to mean something to me first.

What was the thinking like behind the whole conceptualization of the film? especially considering that it is a short film, what helped you make a storyline that's not lackluster for a short movie?

This is a great question! I think just the time frame that I was given to tell the story. I needed the script to have a sense of a beginning, some sort of an arc where one character doesn’t remain the same, a sense of conflict and a solid ending that kept people entertained. I wrote the script based on conversations I’ve had in my own past, but also things I’ve never gotten to really say. And I figured if I can combine that with the idea of a flashback then maybe it will be good enough for a short piece. I’ve also learnt to start simple. There are so many things I want to accomplish when filming but keeping it simple and cohesive is what works. There is still so much I want to say and put out! And I had to get some sort of cool shots and editing in there without jarring an audience.

How did you find the actors?

Esmeralda and Gelson are two actors in the acting department at a film school in London. I didn’t really have to source them out, even though one of them works under an acting agency. I spoke to both of them over coffee dates and at parties and so, through conversation I just knew that I had to get them in my first film prior to seeing any of their work. I was lucky enough to do this with no needed budget. We all became really good friends, and they were able to approach the script as realistically as possible, and I was happy about that.

You’re also a model, how did you get into that?

I started freelance modeling in around 2015/2016. My approaches to modelling really come from photographers and very particular shoots and poses that have inspired me. For reference images on set I always go to Cameron Reed, Conor Cunningham, Renell Medrano and Edwig Henson’s work. I had worked with some really talented photographers in Gabs and fashion brands and then there was this really wonderful shoot that I had with Glotto, and Mboko is just brilliant at whatever she touches, it was when I still had my blonde wig phase and after that I started contacting other photographers that I’d longed to work with on instagram and built a portfolio. To this day I think Septemberline has captured my best work. He’s always been far ahead of his time. Current photographers that I’ve come across in London or even New York would be astounded by his catalogue.

What were some of the challenges you faced when creating the film?

Shooting on location. That park scene was shot in February and it was very cold when we filmed it. It was shot at the top of Primrose Hill park, and my sound designer, Elia Cordaro, had an issue with his lavelier mics; so we had to ADR the whole conversation which is essentially when one re-records the entire dialogue in the studio.

How do you handle creative blocks?

I put the creative project away for a while, and try ground myself in reality. I've learnt to release the guilt that comes with taking my time, if I have enough time. Yoga and meditation help to just destress a lot of the tension I hold in. Immersing myself in what’s actually happening around me, going outside. Watching trash tv. When I feel like I’m getting overly intellectual with something I’m creating it helps to stay away from it. Then the inspiration comes back.

What kind of music do you like listening to and what is your favorite album right now?

I listen to a lot of alternative music, indie, bossa nova, baile funk, jazz and hip hop. I don’t have a favourite album at the moment but my playlists heavily consist of Kaytranada, Ojerime, King Krule, Babyxsosa, Naomi Sharon and Clairo.

What are your favorite movies?

Leon the Professional (1994), Before Sunrise (1995), Love Jones (1997), Passing (2021), C’mon C’mon (2021), and Ladybird (2017)

How did you get to debut your film at the Raindance film festival?

I submitted it for the student showcase which is during the very last day of film festival programme, where they screened BA films, MA films and a whole bunch of student films. I received an email one day before the screening that mine was chosen to be in the selected titles category. It was a dream, it still is.

Describe the feeling you had when people were watching your first ever film at the theatre?

You know the feeling you get when you’ve finally grasped that one thing that you know you’re really good at? And it feels like you’re flying and like you could do that for the rest of your life? When you’d discovered a part of your purpose. That’s what it felt like. My younger self is astounded.

What's next for you?

Many things, I can only hope. I have a long way to go but I'm happy to be here. I’m drafting a new script, I’m connecting with more black female filmmakers. Another print shoot is lined up. I’m leaving the rest up to life.

Honestly I really hate when people say there's something reasonably wrong with a Pokémon game and then bring up sales numbers, and then specifically bashes gen 5 for not selling "well"

An essay I guess

First off the gen 5 games sold pretty well for games in general, just not that well for a Pokémon game and certainly not by today's standards with a wider and accessible audience.

Second, there's a multitude of reasons gen 5 didn't sell as well but still are praised by millions. One of which is why we now have near simultaneous world launches.

ROMs.

It's actually pretty easy to run ROMs, so easy in fact that western side fans were playing new Pokémon games the week of release in Japan. This goes back as far as Platinum, but was getting better as of HGSS. People were (and still are) happy just spamming A, so the language difference didn't matter- even so, fans were translating the games faster than TPC was localizing them. Popular mods was something like a basic battle translation- just translating the names, types, and descriptions of moves and abilities. Given time, and especially by the time BW would release, fans also made translation mods for the games' plots, usually a couple of months before it hit stores.

So with all of this in mind, do you think it's just a coincidence that sales shot up when XY released world wide at the same time?

Of course I realize that's not the only issue. Nah, see BW released at a pretty low point for fans.

I don't think it's unreasonable to say most people who play the games have been fans since they were kids- at the time for gen 5, this was definitely still the case, as most fans of the franchise were in high school at the time, assuming they got into the games when they were 5 or so around gen 1 or 2. There was definitely a handful of fans picking up the games for the first time with gen 3 and 4, usually around the ages of 5 to 7 as well, but the main audience at the time was a little older- hence why the games started getting more complex plots and themes, and the characters for BW reflecting that by being older than usual as well.

Maybe it was just me, but by middle school everyone was beating me up and making fun of me for the SLIGHTEST thing, let alone high school. It wasn't cool to like pokemon at the time- shocker when you compare it to 2016 when people were breaking into yards and government properties and shit for a Cubone in PoGo. High school was the era everyone was trying so hard to fit in and seem more grown up than they actually were, still is from what I'm hearing.

Not to mention, pokemon fans at the time did not defend every little thing Game Freak did like they do today. These days they could sell a Switch game that's just a JPEG image of Pikachu, charge it for $70, and a good chunk of fans will defend it and call it art, and it would sell for millions. Not everyone, obviously, but people who speak out against it would get screamed at by defenders. Hell you still can't point out the very obvious, GLARING issues with the Switch games from a technical and consumer standpoint, let alone point out the bad corporate politics, without some twitter user screaming at you until they're red in the face.

That's actually a pretty common fandom thing these days- even Sonic the Hedgehog has people defending it now, and that fandom was putrid toxic before the movie. You gotta understand, people would get doxxed on forums for saying they liked SA2 and not Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It was bad. Really bad. Compare this to your average pokemon fan, and pokemon is actually pretty lovely.

Back in 2010, this defensive fandom behavior was not the case at all. Teens and early 20 somethings were much more cynical and edgy- this includes pokemon fans. 1 garbage and ice cream pokemon was all it took to make it a laughing stock- completely ignoring worse pokemon like Mr Mime and Jinx from when they were kids. Adults too hopped in on this, and genwunners ESPECIALLY hounded it to hell and back. Not to mention normal people thinking you're weird or outright being hostile and antagonistic towards you if you hinted at liking it.

In short, being a pokemon fan just wasn't IN at the time. This, despite there being a ton of effort to write a more complex plot and include an entire region of some pretty amazing new designs like Samurott, Haxorus, Gigalith, Krookodile, Whimsicott, Braviary, Carracosta, etc.

So of course when X and Y dropped, they began what is now a DECADE of nostalgic Kanto pandering to bring back old fans. Charizard got TWO new megas, and one was black and cool and had blue flames, and Mewtwo got 2 new Megas and one looked like goddamn Frieza. You got Kalos starters, sure, but you'd get Kanto starters after your first badge. Your first encounter was a Pidgey, Santalune Forest was just a shorter 3d Viridian forest- it was very clear who they were pandering to. Whether it was vindication for the petty genwunner that refused to play a game without Pikachu, or it was that jock that saw Blastoise getting a Mega and remembered loving his pokemon cards as a kid, the strategy worked and the momentum would carry further with GO in 2016. Not to mention the games were extremely easy, even without EXP share, so the person that couldn't understand why fire isn't killing this water type could just win via bigger numbers.

The prime chunk of audience at the time would be in college or older at the time, too. Unlike high school and middle school, suddenly it was cool to have interests outside of your stereotypical high school party movie. I mean, it was still prime time for alcohol and trying/failing to get laid, but now your friends had 3ds's and a shiny Machamp they want to show you. Yeah you could go to parties, but you could also freely participate in dorm wide pokemon tournaments and people would excitedly gather to watch, fan or not. Hell, they'd combine the two sometimes by having pokemon battles and beer related stakes. Hell, your college professor might even have a Pokémon day for fun.

Plus, there was the whole novelty that Pokémon on a handheld was ***THREE DEE OOOOOOO~~~~***

College in general was just a time for people to realize that life is way too shitty to try to constantly keep up a fake adult aura. Shit, it was not out of the ordinary to have dorm watch parties from anything including Naruto, The Walking Dead, and Pokémon movies. It was cool to actually like things again!

Now. All of this in mind- plus keeping in mind that they would have a SIMULTANEOUS world wide release on the exact same day- keeping further in mind that it's harder to emulate a 3ds or Switch game that it is a DS game.

THAT'S why gen 5 sold "poorly" in comparison to other gens. Tldr: roms and the target audience thinking pokemon wasn't cool at the time.

In comparison today, it's way more popular due to the novelty of the Switch anyway which not only has the casual Smash Bros, but a god damn dragon's hoard of amazing originals like BoTW or Mario Odyssey, and amazing ports like The Witcher 3 or Red Dead Redemption- basically people would usually buy a ds or 3ds for Pokemon- MAYBE Kingdom Hearts or Mario, but now people are buying it for Donkey Kong, CoD, FIFA, etc, so you have a wider audience that might consider buying it as well.

This, and the outright milking of nostalgia. The average fan is a working adult now, not having to beg their parents to buy a system or game for them- not to mention we're now in an era where pokemon fans RAISE pokemon fans. Whether it's the guy that had cards as a kid thinking it's a good idea to have his 5 year old play Blue for their first game (in this day and age? Not really, but go off), or a mega fan getting the current game for their kid, that's the fandom right now, which guarantees more sales. Add in more influencers from Twitch and YouTube and throw in sponsorships to Vtubers or a standard streamer or animator- it is everywhere right now. Hell, I'd argue it's even more popular with adults than kids these days. It really isn't unreasonable to invite friends over for a movie night in your apartment and whip out pokemon to 1v1 one of them.

The games practically sell themselves now. You never really see a TV ad for pokemon, the majority of marketing is now by fans for fans online or in person.

Compare this to 2010, social media is still pretty young, smart phones are barely a thing, looking things up online wasn't as easy as reaching in your pocket, and again, cynical teens and adults think pokemon is uncool, and being seen with a DS could ruin your reputation.

And I'm already prepared for the eventual Unova revisits not selling as well as whatever new gen came out at the time- enhanced versions and remakes hardly ever sell as well as new gen pokemon games. But I think people will be very surprised by how well it actually does in this day and age sales wise.

Unova as a whole was just a wrong place and wrong time scenario. If it released today instead, it would have been praised for it's storyntelling, characters, pokedex, locations, hell even the mc designs.

Sales numbers do not denote whether something is good or not. Most Marvel fans agree Endgame sucked ass, but it sold pretty well. Most people will agree the Gamecube was cool, but it sold poorly. Boycotting doesn't work for Pokemon either because it's too big to fail, and people will literally buy multiples of each game for some reason or another. SwSh sold the best out of the franchise, but that doesn't excuse its piss poor story, empty wild area, annoying characters, and poor route design. Scarlet and Violet have a great story and are pretty fun, and are selling very, VERY well, but that doesn't mean it's not the poorest performing pokemon game on any system when there's hundreds of glitches and poor visuals that hamper enjoyment for a lot of people.

SHADOW AND ROUGE ARENT BESTIES ARE U FUCKIN KIDDIN ME (like he looked at her when she was frozen in time and he had like barely a reaction and my heart hurt UNGH)

that being said i do live rouge's voice and seeing her get to play in the space with all the characters and act like a pal that still does crime obvs but isnt always this sexy kitten but is still flirty and hyper femme! <333

and i love rusty rose and thorn so much ;-; i think black rose has yet to super interest me but that would make sense that it's hard to keep up the anty for every iteration of the main group.

That being said, I wish we had an evil/deeply gray Rouge or Big iteration like with Nine, Rusty and Dread (tho Dread is kind of wasted potential /:). I liked that Prim was more about her survival at first and turned her back on Thorn and Sonic, but obvs time constraints.

Again I'm mainly cranky that a lot of the screen time this season was a bombardment of the Eggman family like I'm sorry...those are characters that work in short burts pls let the furries get more time I'm begging.

The stuff happening between Sonic vs. the alternates of everyone, Sonic vs. Shadow and Sonic vs. Nine specifically is so interesting and messy and I don't know why that took a backseat, ESPECIALLY SHADOW ALMOST ENTIRELY, for most of the season.

Like like like is this eggman prime or...? also as funny as that giant eggman at the end was, it was still like, in the moment for me, so irrevelant to the drama happening with Sonic and Nine that i was like laughing nervously?

like i wasn't super hyped or invested in that moment until sonic went into prime!sonic or whatever his new super form is with the purple eyes. like i was like oh there's really a big eggman right there huh?

hm.

like ik marketing will never leave eggman out but god damn it should sometimes. and I love eggman but im realizing how much he takes away when there's promising seeds and ideas happening that get shortened, cut or strangled by having to insert him in all the time.

Like the season ending so well is the build up to Sonic and Nine's relationship going up in flames and much more dramatic than Sonic fighting more Eggman robots. Like I'm sorry, he functions best as secondary to the mobians and his screen time really should reflect that.

Like, are u really throwing visual stimuli on screen for the old sonic folks and the baby ones and some quick cheap jokes about boomers and white liberal millenials? cuz why else is that fam eating up so much time??

also when sonic did this so quick and ran i nearly pissed and shitted myself laughing that cut was righteous.

like grr!! there were good jokes and moments this season- if they focus on the stronger parts of season 2 for season 3 (and take as long as u want if it means it'll be good pls god fucking pay writers and artists well or i will literally wolf out and eat u alive) it'll be a kick ass season!

and ik it's probs treats for the sonadow fans and not a promise of a follow through on it but wow they were so fruity with each other this season i got embarrassed for them like ????? u guys are really acting like this and not thinking anyone knows what u are??? GAH

it almost tricked me for a second that something more could happen. but if shadow continues the amount of screen time he's had the last two seasons in the next season(s) then sonadow is the least of my concerns. probs wont be much of shadow at all, and that fucking sux cuz he's so cool in this show.

for the popularity of shadow in the fandom u would never know given the superficiality of his involvement in projects since his game flopped.

like prime and the sonic 3 movie gave me hope that would turn around but I'm like uh oh are they wiggling shadow at the doorway to get us in and shafting us once they got our cash? ugh.

being cynical sux but never again. voltron was my 9/11 fjxjjxxjdhdhhdhsj

I don’t know if it’s been discussed already, but something that really impressed me about Sonic 2 is how the set up Robotnik’s sheer brilliance from the very first minute.

I feel like Sonic 1 mainly showed how smart he is, always in control of the situation and with enough resources to shift the tide if things change. Sonic 2 in comparison focuses a lot on his sheer determination, how far he’s willing to push, to plan ahead and stick to it to the last consequences, to become a god among men and rule over them all. And it all started with “I’ll be home by Christmas!” at the end of the first movie and that incredibly complex trap he set up for the three scavengers and Knuckles at the start of this new movie. That’s a seriously impressive moment, by the way.

I brought this side of Eggman’s character up months ago when I noted his plan in Sonic 3 and how he did not let it go until the very last second of the game, and the second Sonic movie felt like I was watching exactly that. Ever since the minute he came back to Earth he didn’t treat Sonic with the same smart, professional attitude like in Sonic 1, this time he was out for blood because the hedgehog would stop his plans otherwise. He kept his witty comments, but he wasn’t playing games at all after being banished to the Mushroom Planet for so long. He literally set up a horror movie scene at Sonic’s house as his entrance, lol.

And while he may not have suceeded at first, he took control of the situation, executed his plan perfectly and when it was time to handle the betrayal, he waited for his chance, spoke in a low voice when he tried to backstab Knuckles until Sonic interrupted that. Then, a new opportunity arose: distract the fools, grab the Emerald, be untouchable. So clean and elegant.

A similar thing happens at the end, in a moment I was actually waiting to repeat Eggman’s “gotcha!” moment in Unleashed’s intro. As Super Sonic enters the scene and starts to tear the mech apart, he takes a step back and tries to reason with him, to reach a fake middle ground in an attempt to lure Sonic into a false sense of security before striking back. It didn’t work, of course, but we know that exact move has worked at least once in the game series before, and I think that’s what makes that moment in the movie so damn cool.

I may be rambling a bit by now since I’m still trying to piece together what I think of the movie overall, but that’s what impressed me the most of Robotnik in Sonic 2. Even at the end of the movie his fate is unclear, and while that may have to do with decisions outside of the movie itself, I like the idea Eggman will just vanish and leave everyone wondering if he’s really gone or not, while also setting up Stone as a future main threat. It’s like the mystery of Eggman’s fate at the end of Sonic Forces but, y’know, good.

Ok here I am! I'm ready! Let's talk about Sonic sequel...😖😖😖💘💘💘👏👏😭😭

First of all this movie hit me hard cause I didn't met sonic from the 2D classics not even the first 3Ds nope I met sonic for the first time with the game SONIC HEROES so you can already guess how I felt seeing the primary colors trio together all cute and fluffy in live action movie KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA😱😱🤯🤯🤩🤩

Again the movie showed me a relatable version of Sonic full of flaws and need of growth, also the humans once again shine in a good way. There's a change from the first movie, Tom and Sonic were knowing each other for the first time with Sonic kind of idolizing him as really cool and nice person he wants to be best friends with and it was kinda like that on the middle of the movie but at the end that had a different portrayal of their relationship with they making Sonic his own room and both Maddie and Tom sitting with him like a family, right there Sonic was adopted, not took in, he got parents not best friends roommates and it's shown right at the beginning of the sequel.

Tom can't be Sonic best friend because he is his Father... And at the beginning Sonic didn't agree with that, he wants Tom to be his friend not his Dad and Tom gets worried because he can't give Sonic what he needs, friends! A gang, fellas like him to grow up with (awwww he is such a Dad and keeps punching people faces LOL 😂). And who appears? The ones meant to be beasties and bros!♥️♥️ And Tom and Maddie just adopted them all 😂😂😂😂 and Maddie... In that pink dress...😳😳😳 Oh Maddie why are you so pretty, beautiful and wonderful and stunningly gorgeous queen 💘💘💘🥵🥵(ok gay side stop simping) and seriously i bet she feels lucky as a vet+ animal lovers she got to be the mom of 3 kids who are also alien fluffy animals. And Rachel... Look a lot of people might think the wedding scene was unnecessary but honestly I think it was so much fun, Rachel was a queen and I have the theory that since she is in a relationship with Randall an agent of G.U.N that could mean they could be the ones Rouge the bat lives with (if she appears in Sonic 3), it makes sense since Rouge will work for G.U.N, so the Wedding scene to me would explain why Rouge will live with Rachel since Rachel is now more involved with G.U.N through Randall.

Tails... Aww Tails... He is just too much of a cute fluffy baby!!! This movie did justice to him! He is useful, brave, smart, he fights and even being intellectually superior to all the characters he is still behave like the 8 years old little kid he is! That dance scene was a bit like: why the hell is this happening? But not only was so funny it was such a sweet heartwarming bonding moment! The moment their relationship changed from friendly idol and awkward eager fanboy to best friends and brothers....(sonic tucked in tails like Tom did with him once and Tails covered him with his fluffy tails aadakrwadawae I'm having foam in my mouth because of all this cuteness!!!🥺🥺😖😖) And I'm guessing that Tails lived alone because his parents abandoned him out of shame of him having 2 tails or something, just like i suppose Sonic was abandoned too by his biological parents because of his power and was found by Longclaw... It's just a theory to make sense of all of it, we only know what happened with Knuckles dad... Both lonely and special and both reached out to meet their idols to be friends of them they so much alike 🥺🥺🥺(well actually sonic did it with Tom because he needed help and Tails reached out Sonic to help him Lol Sonic you are such a troublemaker 😂😂😂) So yeah Tails and his participation in the movie was top notch. (No more "help me sonic I'm helpless"😤)

No seriously his design is too much for my heart ❤️ He is fluffy SO FLUFFY i want to rub my face with those fluffy helicopter tails😍😍😍😍

Robotnick... Oh dear... Jim Carrey is the best...👌👌👌👌 He made a completely excepcional funny Eggman with the perfect mix of charisma, madness, evilness, cruelty and sadism!!👏👏👏 With the balanced amount of comedy and dark dramatic action... And excuse me? He even has his own simp? Agent Stone you are priceless 👌. Honestly it was hard to be angry with him even when he betrayed knuckles because is just too charismatic! (Still hard or not I got pissed... My poor baby knuckles... You egg bitch!)

And the cherry top... My precious Knuckles the echidna the one character who forced me watch this movies i didn't think they would be so good and shut my mouth 😖😖😖😖😖 ok ok first of all to the director of the movie :

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Along with Tails you did justice to knuckles!!! Finally 😭😭😭!! Knuckles wasn't stupid, retarded level!(hate hate hate what sonic boom did to knuckles🤬🤬🤬, sonic X did a better job) He is just naive a bit clueless and impulsive! Because he has a lot of pain and rage and has been Isolated for so long! And previously he lived kind of a more primitive like life basing on how his tribe looked like (after that he showed up with modern shoes and gloves, his dad had bandages instead) And unlike in other versions the fact that he believes eggman and immediately fights sonic doesn't look irrational because he already had a grudge against him for personal reasons, Eggman had to do nothing to convince him the hedgehog was "bad" he merely tricked him to get the master emerald and let him fight Sonic as a distraction. Also he got back to have his typical bad temper 🤣🤣 and he INTIMIDATES. So thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

His bonding moment with Sonic was as perfect as with tails he was betrayed and then they saved each other and finally sit to have a conversation with knuckles seeing sonic with a new light and them being rescued by Tails... All three together!!! Sonic Heroes!!!!!!😭😭😭😭 Fighting eggman robots just like in the game it was just sooooo epic!!!!

Also the respect in his design, he is a bit taller and beefy than he usually was in the games but not exaggerated like that big insulting hunk of Sonic boom ajjjj he is not supposed to be as tall as Vector or Big the cat 🙄🙄🙄 but here he had the balance, some centimeters taller than sonic and with muscle (not exaggerated) showing and in contrast with tails... My heart!!!😖😖❤️❤️ Tails is little enough to be picked up by Knuckles!! How pure is this?

Isn't just wholesome? The three of them were alone in the world and they found each other and got new human parents and became brothers🥺🥺🥺🥺 playing together, getting ice cream, acting like kids!!! Like the kids they are... i mean knuckles and Sonic are technically teenagers (16 and 15) but it makes sense that they have a more childish behavior than that age because growing up without adult examples does that, it makes you more innocent and of course Tails is 8 he is the actual child here XD and Sonic now that he got proper friends of his age is ready to accept Tom is his father and finally calls him Dad🥲👌

We also saw baby knuckles! Like baby Sonic 😭😭😭 we didn't see baby tails cause he is already a baby 🤗🤗🤗 and SUPER SONIC!!!! And then SHADOW!!!! Im honestly surprised i didn't die of excitement watching the movie 😵😵😵

And the best part is how the story with the master emerald and the extinction of the echidna tribe changed in a different path that makes sense and also conveniently provides a excuse for knuckles to stay with the other two permanently and not having to go alone to Angel Island to guard it and also they changed the jewel to a more comfortable size 👏👏😂😂 BRAVO 👏👏👏👏👏😭👏😭👏😭 WONDERFUL WONDERFUL MOVIE BRAVO!!!

My basic thoughts on the whole idea of sonadow in the sonic movie 3:

Though I appreciate the very gay henchmen, I am very tired of villan gays when there's not an equally gay hero.

Which Is why, when people start going "SONADOW! SHASONI! MAKE IT HAPPEN"

I realize that hey, even if it's subtle-oh God is there a definite possibility.

Of course, as much as I'd love that happening, with all these cute love shit- here's my little hot take/thoughts on it(?):

1. If shadow dies in the end like in-game, you understand that-that's a very tragic story of major pinning. (If the words "I love you" come out I'm gonna barf. I've always been a sucker for subtly, so to me that line is saved for when your supposed to be crying and bawling. Never liked that line anyways, cause when performed right you don't even need to say it to get the point across yknow?.)

2. If they're doing a "I can fix him" thing I'm going to laugh in anguish.

3. Does.. does sonic.. even need romance? Does shadow need it like...at the point where he is mentally at, I think it'd be best to keep any romance one-sided untill they can finally put the past behind them-or what not.

4. If knuckles joined the family of the W's then is shadow just gonna like.. join to ? (if he's alive that is) In that cause it would be pretty weird to ship either way cause they're basically adoptive family members.

5. How subtle are they going with this? As cool as it is, not everybody is a shipper. Not everybody wants to see ships in their kids movie especially with already established characters.

(Like, kissing? In my robot movie? Seriously??)

6. Other ships can happen too, shadow x sonic ain't the only plausibility. Neither is Rouge x knuckles. Who knows what the writers might accidentally and purposely come up with.

Okay with that being said, I'm gonna spew out all my thoughts that goes against my own doubts on this.

As a major shipper of this, platonically or not, I've collected more thoughts on this movie shasoni idea.

1. Hints of very queer, gay stuff (as far as I'm aware) is very blatant. (Eggman maid outfit and coffee foam hearts is VERY obvious.) Of course this is only appears on the more villainous side. (The usual villan queers. I'm so tired of it.)

Now, with that being said. There still is, and I mean a very blatant gay ship going on here. (Unsure if one-sided tho) which leaves for the possibility of other ships such as that one.

For examplee~ shasoni! It's a possibilty- probably not a likely one, but still possible!

If there's villan gays, there's gotta be a gay heros if you get what I'm saying.

2. Amy is gone? Well, they're actually doing something similar to what happened with Tails in sa2. The whole "mabye, mabye not" when it comes to tails being in the game/being playable. That's why, (according to what others have told me) Tails plays in an airplane-mech thing instead of flying like he did in Sa1.

This is an odd choice- since Amy was most notably responsible for causing shadows whole "Maria actually asked me to save the world" thing.

Now if she doesn't appear, who else can fill in that spot? There's about 4 canadaties: Tails, Sonic, Knuckles and Rouge. (I doubt Robotnik or Stone can reach shadow like the compassionate Amy can.)

Tbh, I'd scratch Tails and knuckles off immediately, since they don't really get that interaction with shadow to the degree Rouge and sonic do.

Leaving Sonic and Rouge at a tie. Rouge, would obviously make the better choice to rejuvenate shadow's manipulated memories, but her selfish nature/pride may get in the way of being that 100% in the moment, plea of help.

Seeing as Sonic, is characterized diffrenetly, as well as some other characters, you could assume that Rouge may be characterized diffrenetly too!

Of course, sonic still has that edge, as his interactions with shadow and the respect towards him he later gains (shadow even going as far as calling him "the ultimate lifeform" (yes he does say that. Im unsure if it was scrapped. If not, play the sa2 battle but longer than usual. There's a chance he says it after awhile.) (Also to add the whole "almost sacrificing himself in the process to save shadow" bit too.)

So yeah, Rouge and Sonic are at a tie on this one. Personally, I think Sonic has the edge- but who knows! Haha!

3. Both sa2 and the shadow spinoff game was said to be refrence for this movie during a interview/questonaire.

Depending on the timeliness they pick for what they're basing this off of, how else are they going to explain sonic being like.. totally on board with shadows antics?

I mean, like...^ the guy literally went "whoohoo!" (It's so adorable idk why but it is the cutest thing I've heard sonic say EVER) towards beating up a black..hound alien??

And is like "damn lol okay" while shadow goes and does the whole killing streak thing haha.

4. This is movie sonic, things can go diffrenet (not super deviate, but enough that it's still feels new.) If they want to, they could have the hedgehog be really fucking gay, generally queer, or just kinda not into any romance or kissing n stuff.

Honestly this is just to get my thoughts out. I don't dictate how the story's gonna go, I just wanted to rant. In the end, this is a movie for kids that I didn't watch (I watched through clips, analysis videos, and tumblr gifs okay? Don't judge. Either way idgaf.)

As long as it's not starting actually stuff that can get people in danger, then hey, it's entertainment. Ships are ships and this is just food for thought. Okay, hasta la vista.

I watched the sonic movie 2 at a family reunion, i watched it until like the part where Knuckles is going “dot dot dot” and honestly I wanna give tails a hug, also if like to hear ur opinions and some spoilers

I LOVED Sonic 2, it was so fun!! Tails really is huggable, he’s my little brother and I wanna play Roblox Bee Swarm Simulator with him.

Agent Stone is by far my favorite character, without getting too spoilery I’m very excited to see him in the 3rd movie :D

Alright gonna add a read more since I’ll be getting super spoilery, no important scene or character moment is safe, and there’s also some Sonic Adventure 2 spoilers so proceed with caution

Knuckles my beloved I love him so much <3

he’s literally just trying to avenge his dead tribe, he misses his dad, he’s just a messed up kid like sonic and now he has a family ajskamzkakzozk 😢

Ok so I knew it wouldn’t happen but I expected Eggman and Stone to kiss like 3 times. Like they’re literally so obviously in love I’m surprised they were able to do that. Something tells me the next movie will have Stone trying to avenge Robotnik (since Jim Carrey retired I think that’ll be their way to keep Robotnik relevant to the plot without Carrey)

also let me just say stobotnik is the very reason I’m scared to watch this movie with my family. Like there’s one scene with them that is literally so sexual in any content but a Sonic the Hedgehog movie and I’m scared my mom would just leave the theater.

Tails is the definition of a skrunkly he’s so neurodivergent in the best way possible he’s blorbo from my video game movie I wanna take him to the movies and get him a large popcorn

I’m still not over the shadow reveal at the end omg I’m so hyped I love shadow so much I really wanna see how they handle Maria and the ARK and shadow living in space I wonder if they’ll even add GUN killing Maria or if they’ll change it up to deviant from the character looses everything and wants to kill sonic because of it thing they did with Knuckles oh org I hope Gerald Robotnik is in this because they mentioned a Wachowski protecting the town 50 years ago I wonder if that Wachowski knew Gerald that’d be so cool I hope they keep Maria having NIDS I don’t think terminal and chronic illnesses other than cancer are seen enough in media and I think people with one should be able to see themselves in a character

I also hope they give Shadow a gun, he deserves it after 50 years of being frozen or whatever.

Sonic is literally just a 13 year old with adhd and I love it so much. Like this is peak sonic, I think this is how he’d be in the classic games. Love that he’s quirky and cool and all that but still just a nerdy kid, I want more of this Sonic.

Sonic and Knuckles saving each other from drowning was so asjhkaizjakzk I wanted to cry they didn’t like each other but still saved each other and I’m all like 😢

I also like that Sonic not being able to swim is a constant thing in all Sonic media like that’s the one of the only character traits that stays in everything

Willow I LOVE you for asking this. Thank you for giving me permission to talk about this because holy shit.

S tier:

She-Ra. My god is that soundtrack just absolutely gorgeous. I could rant about how incredible it is just in terms of things like leitmotifs and thematic usage for hours but it's also just incredible to listen to in the first place.

How to Train your Dragon. Yeah it's probably not a surprise since everyone knows how good the soundtrack is, but the hype is well deserved.

Shrek, actually! There are some really beautiful pieces in the score (which was co-composed by the same person who did HTTYD) and people mostly just focus on the pop songs in the movie or the memes. Listen to Fairytale and feel emotions right now.

Doctor Who: Specifically the stuff done by Murray Gold. That man never failed to compose incredible music for the show and the fact that he left was a large part of why I struggled to keep watching starting at series 11.

A tier:

Sonic 06: That soundtrack is so pretty and is by far the best thing to come out of that game. Eggman's theme that was introduced in 06 was so recognizable and iconic that it was reused for every game following 06 (except Forces) and the fact that an instrumental version of All Hail Shadow was used as Shadow's theme was an incredible decision.

Minecraft: I'll be honest the only reason why this isn't getting an S is because I've just listened to it so many times. Aria Math is underrated btw.

Deltarune: Spamton's theme goes hard. I love basically every part of the soundtrack, and My Castle Town is such a fun tune that I just wanna stay in that part of the game to listen to it more.

Fullmetal Alchemist: (both versions) beautiful score to go with a beautiful anime. Not much else to say about it except Brothers (from the 03 version) being sung in Russian is so cool and unique.

Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2: Wow Marvel actually did something right for once! The fact that the themes and leitmotifs established in the first film were carried over and expanded upon for the second movie was such a treat.

B tier:

TMNT 2012: The score isn't officially released which upsets me. Some of the reused stuff can get repetitive, but there's also a lot of things that I wish I had an official version to listen to. Like the scene in season 3 when they're going back to NYC.

Stray: I recently played it and the music is so fucking cool. I think that the way it set the tone and atmosphere of the world was done incredibly well. Good music to write to.

Undertale: Not as good as Deltarune, which is to be expected since it came out first, but still iconic as always. I don't find myself listening to it frequently though.

The Adventure Zone: Started off a bit rough when the music was first introduced, but as Griffin became more confident and skilled in his composing abilities the music started going hard. Really started adding to the emotional beats of the story. Also the Amnesty theme is so good. I haven't listened to the podcast further than the end of Amnesty so I can't say anything about the more recent stuff though.

C tier:

Ironman 1 and 3: Both are decent and I listen to them sometimes, but not my favorites. I feel like if the themes established in the first movie had been used in subsequent films, for example, it would have made things a lot better.

Moon Knight: I think that the score is cool but can sometimes be repetitive. There are some moments that are really cool though.

D tier:

Sonic X English dub: enough said.

The Mask 1994

*I finally wrote the whole thing. I finally watched the movie that involved something I’ve been talking about A LOT. I think this took about an hour since I finished the movie. Forgot to mention Charlie.*

I wanna make this clear, even before I watched movie or ever writing this. I am legitimately a stupid and lazy person. Because my mom told me about this, and last week, my dad rented A Quiet Place Part 2. When I was trying to go to sleep but was looking up movies...I literally forgot my tv can do that too...and that I can rent or buy a movie...I rented the movie this morning, and deleted it afterwards...after all that talk...I could’ve done that...wow. I should do that more considering some movies I wanna see or like. Not too much though. My tv has DirecTV. Just a heads up.

But a few or couple of minutes ago, I finally watched The Mask film from 1994. This post is gonna be filled with spoilers and it’s gonna get long. Gonna be kind of a review. My overall thoughts on it. This was my first reaction to the whole movie.

I’d just wanna talk about this too. I like comic books, I like comic book movies. Mainly my favorites are ones like all of Zack Snyder’s DCEU movies, Spider-Man 1 & 2, The Suicide Squad 2021, Wonder Woman 2017, The Dark Knight(Despite whatever issues I have with it), and Joker 2019. Yeah, those are mainly DC films and two Marvel related ones. I don’t even mind Spider-Man 3 as well. I also forgot Dredd 2012 is another one of my favorites. Along with Batman 1989.

I was hoping The Mask could make that list of favorites. Because I read the comics first. I don’t think I ever watch the movie fully as a kid MAYBE. I’m a fan of the comics, I know this movie was gonna be a lighter take on the series.

In a nutshell...I liked it. It’s possible it will be on that list of favorite CBM’s...but I want to talk about it. I’ll also admit I think what got me interested in seeing this film and this series was me liking Jim Carrey as Ace Ventura...now, let’s get to the point.

Yeah, I liked it. I thought the movie was genuinely entertaining. Despite seeing some clips before. But also Ryan Hollinger’s video about it. Revealing the ending, the twist, and other stuff. But I didn’t wanna watch more more that I haven’t seen yet.

I will be honest, it still made me laugh. Even some scenes I already have seen. I will admit, the Cuban Pete scene is actually one of my favorites. XD But what also surprised me is that at times, despite being a funny film. It can genuinely be touching in a way. And I am mainly talking about the developing relationship between Stanley and Tina.

I just wanna talk about the characters right now. I’ll just admit unless I haven’t already. I’m a Jim Carrey fan. Mainly because of his more goofier roles. Particularly his roles from the Ace Ventura movies, Liar Liar, and especially Sonic The Hedgehog. I also will admit this, Jim Carry nails playing Big Head or who they call...The Mask in this movie...I’ll nitpick about that later.

But yeah, Jim’s entertaining as Big Head in this film. He does make me laugh. But I think another role he does well despite there are some sillier moments, which is fine. I feel like in a way, Stanley Ipkiss in this version, is maybe one of his more normal roles. But I know I’m wrong considering whatever other roles he’s in. He portrays a likable good guy who’s sadly mainly pushed around. Which is quite the difference from the comics, except being pushed around. But that’s another topic. Yet for this story, even if maybe Stanley’s name could be changed. But him being a genuinely kind guy works for this story.

Even before I saw the movie, learning more about this version about the character. I can relate to Stanley in some ways honestly. Which is something that I like. He basically shines as a protagonist.

He portrays both sides well. Despite at times...honestly, this Stanley is wacky. I shouldn’t be judging. Jim does a good stuff with what he played, and he’s the highlight of this movie. He also delivers possibly my favorite Jim Carrey line of all time now. Sorry if I get this wrong. I was looking for a clip of it to help me.

“Daddy’s gonna go kick some ass”. A literal line from Jim Carrey in this movie and I love it. He even brings a pistol with him.

I also wanna admit Peter Greene as Dorian is pretty good as a villain. The dude can be threatening and he works with what he is given. And he’s effective as an antagonist. I just wanna admit that I swear, one of these guys. One of them could’ve Walter in a way and I just think that could’ve been possible. But I’m not sure. Just one of Dorian’s henchmen looked like a huge guy. It just got me thinking about Walter from the comics.

Will admit, I think Kellaway is fine. And I just found out Christopher Reeve was one of the actors considered for the role...damn. But again, Kellaway was fine. He’s more like a supporting character and again, this is like an origin story. I do feel bothered Lionel Ray wasn’t added but replaced with this Doyle character. I will admit that Doyle is silly, which is the point of his character. I guess the writers and director didn’t want two sensible cops or something. I like Kellaway alright, but I’ll always dig Lionel too.

I really wanted to get this point. I thought Cameron Diaz was good as Tina Carlyle and Amy Yasbeck as Peggy Brandt. I will admit, I do strangely like the subversion with Peggy in a way with it’s twist. I get the idea if that it was going for that theme of, “We all wear mask” and Peggy turning Stanley into the mob said a lot about her character. While Tina was genuinely the one that truly supported Stanley.

I think was surprised me more was the fact despite Peggy turned in Stanley for selfish purposes such as paying for her condo. Yet what surprised me more was she was actually concerned for Stanley being killed, and didn’t want him hurt...which explains even more why she stuck around in the cartoon. And honestly, it makes me glad the director took out that deleted scene of her getting killed. So she wasn’t that heartless.

Also...it made me think that...my ideas and changes towards her character...maybe hold some weight.

I’ll just put this out there too. Milo is great, one of my favorite fictional dogs maybe. Good dog.

Trying to think what else, the score was fine. But the licensed music was good or something. Overall, I think my negatives could be just...nitpicks. Such as the Big Head part I wanted to talk about. Listen, I understand this is a different version. I just feel it’s weird to call him, “The Mask” instead of Big Head. I know other characters mask in their name or something. But...some reasons, the name Big Head is there. I guess it’s because of the title or something.

Honestly, I think my negatives are more that it feels short. And maybe Stanley becoming Big Head a bit too early. I sound kind of stupid, I know. But this was the 90′s and whatever else. This was a different take on the comics. But I did genuinely like it. Maybe I’m just a bit attached to those comics. Despite knowing the changes they did.

But I will admit, considering the development for this film. And learning that it was meant to be a horror film. But the director Charles Russell found the violence in the source material to be off putting. So he made it less grim, and more fun. I’ve also read somewhere that trying to make comedy with that violence was difficult.

Back to the point, to be honest. I feel like for that time and age. A more light Mask film was maybe the best choice to go. And we wouldn’t have Jim Carrey in it. I do also wanna say, I feel like The Mask series, you can do a lot of it. You can have something dark with it, or maybe more lighter.

There are still some of those darker elements. Mainly considering the moments with the gangsters and all that. But I will admit, learning that Charles mostly directed horror films. I think it’s impressive he made a more family friendly film and it worked.

I liked it, despite my love for the comics. I thought when writing this, maybe some folks reading this may think I sound like fans who read the comics who first experienced this movie. But the film isn’t bad, it’s just a different take and a pretty nice one at that.

And to be honest, as much as I would of loved to see an actual sequel. And not that bad film known as Son Of The Mask. I understand why Jim Carrey dropped out, and I would’ve loved to see Peggy back because the director planned to bring her back reformed. But I feel like this film works as a one off in a way. And there’s also the cartoon, which works fine as a sequel despite some differences. Yet...I’ll admit, I would’ve loved The Mask 2 if we got Jim Carrey as Stanley again fighting against maybe someone like Walter.

The Mask 1994 is a good film. Despite changes from the source material, but the changes for this vision work. It’s cool this film has a cult following, and the fact I have used elements and story beats from it for The Mask Rebirth stuff I’ve been talking about. Even before watched this whole movie.

It’s a genuine fun flick. But I’m hoping down the line, if Warner Bros stops being fucking stupid with how they run things. Maybe we’ll get a reboot or how about an animated film that seems more true to the source material.

I know The Mask/Big Head doesn’t have a big legacy such as the likes of Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man. But I do think this series could be reimagined and expanded upon. Using elements not only from the original comics, but even the movie and cartoon.

And...despite it was because of Ace Ventura...I would like to thank @kaijuguy19 for being such a supportive dude, and talking about this franchise with me. Including wanting to talk about this movie long ago when I haven’t seen it. But I want to say...no...he’s one of the big reasons why I’m a fan. Because he’s one of the only guys I know who’s a fan. It started with Ace Ventura, but it was because of talking with Kaijuguy that I guess things started to escalate. So thanks man for talking about this stuff with me.

Also, Charlie was silly and he was fine as a character. I forgot about that dude despite wanting to talk about him. Gonna tag him too in case. Charlie schumaker

oikawa literally came into after school practice after a phone call with his mother, fuming

you were talking to kindaichi and yahaba with iwa beside you, arm around your waist totally not obvious guys

and yall just saw an angry oikawa stomping towards yall

they know how iwa is and they literally respect this mans and if anything, out of the whole team, he is the best candidate for your boyfriend

OOOOO TIMESKIP IWAIZUMI HAJIME (27) ATHLETE TRAINER

a little girl with bouncing dark brown hair was giggling as she maneuvered herself around the tall people

a shout from her parents and little sister was only making her run faster until she crashed into the legs of the person she’s been looking for

his blue jersey was similar to hers and she raised her arms up with a bright smile

‘uncle!’

she yelled and he chuckled before hoisting her up to his arms

‘ah, reyna-chan, didnt mom and dad tell you to wait for them? look! tala-chan is crying because you left her’

she followed his finger to her little sister, who was in her father’s arms, crying and reaching out for her

‘nee-chan!’

she screeched

finally, her parents were there and you were scolding her for running off

‘reyna, just dont do that again’

you said and she nodded, pouting and holding her uncle’s thumb

‘thank you, tooru-san. i dont know what i would do if she got lost’

oikawa grinned then gently patted the hat-covered head of the newborn baby girl that was strapped to your chest

‘hehe, its okay, y/n-chan. after all! uncle is always there to save reyna-chan!’

she shrieked when he held her up and hajime shook his head in his antics

‘where’s the others? i saw them in the stands but-’

he was cut off when he heard the shouts and yells from the other side that could only belong to your boys

‘woooo!!!!’

kindaichi’s voice echoed through the place and mattsuhana were rushing to greet their goddaughters

tala shyly accepted the arms of mattsun while makki was squealing quietly when darna was holding his finger tightly as she slept

‘taka-san, wanna hold her? she’s easier to hold when she’s sleeping’

‘oh can i?’

his eyes held the stars as the 11-month-old raised her fist then lowered it back down, sleep still heavy on her

‘waaa~ darna-chan is growing really quickly’

kunimi whispered, peering over his senpai to look at the baby whos eyes kept fluttering

you chuckled while looking at oikawa and him playfully bouncing reyna

‘tooru-san, congratulations on your win. it seems you’ve beaten hajime this time’

you complimented and the brunette smiled brightly at you, adjusting the little girls in his arms

‘ei, y/n-chan, i’ll beat him next time, and next time and the next time!’

every time he said ‘next’ he gave his goddaughter a kiss on her cheek making her giggle

your husband was pouting at the reminder of japan’s loss and you reached over to wrap your arms around him causing hajime to turn his head away from you

‘aww, my 4th baby is sad now’

you cooed and cupped his face delicately on your hands making him sulk and whine

the others, watching the scene, continue to be surprised at this side of their captain that remains to only be caused by you

‘ugh, nearly a decade later and theyre still sappy’

yahaba gagged and watari slapped his back

‘let them be happy’

‘come on! im in the mood for spaghetti! you like spaghetti, tala-chan?’

‘eung!’

mattsun cheered with kindaichi and she raised her hands to share the same energy

once everyone was situated in a restaurant and ordered, small talks were shared around the table of the past

‘haha, spaghetti is how your baba found out about you, tala-chan’

yahaba’s comment made the walking group laugh at the memory of seeing the video you sent in the seijoh group chat

‘i wanted to be creative with my second child since my firstborn was revealed by this loudmouth’

oikawa winced at the indirect diss at him

‘y/n-chan! i was really excited to find out i was going to be an uncle!’

‘youre already an uncle, bakakawa!’

hajime has toned down the insults to keep it pg for the children

‘but-!’

they started to argue, the oldest daughter looking disinterested as she sees this happening or hearing it whenever her dad and uncle video chat

‘it took me forever to find a ‘prego’ pasta sauce in the grocery store like i dont know why. was there a shortage?’

you complained, remembering the frustration

your fellow first years snickered at you and kindaichi prodded fun at you

‘is that why you just outright told him you were pregnant the day you found out?’

you rolled your eyes and watched makki and mattsun and tala watch the youngest as she wiggled her fists in the air and was awake enough to babble ‘makki’ over and over again

that was her first word and although she is now able to say a few words, she still repeats her first word over and over again

‘we had a fight and it just came out so of course i didnt have time to prepare!’

you defended and hajime finished his antics with oikawa just as you said that

‘what-what was your words again? ‘i really want to push you off the roof right now but i want my baby to meet their bastard father first?’‘

you gasped at that regretful statement and punched him in the arm

‘hajime! stop!’

you whined and covered your face with the sleeves of your his hoodie

‘hehe, y/n, you should do that again’

kyotani teased and you glared at him

‘shut up kyotani’

eyebrows were raised

‘eh? are you more hormonal?’

‘do you realize you already have 3 daughters?’

‘iwaizumi-san really wants to have a volleyball team family’

‘at least wait a year and a half, you animals’

‘so,, like hes that good huh?’

hajime growled and leaned over to intimidate but you snarled and jumped on your feet, being held back by the arms by kindaichi and hajime to stop yourself from leaping across the table to kill yahaba

‘keep talking like shite and i’ll make sure none of you become the godfather of this baby’

okay what

one, did you just curse

and two, this baby?!

‘im big sister again?!’

reyna ruined the surprised silence and then chaos ensued

‘WHAT!’

‘BABY?!’

‘THIS BABY?!’

you just realized what you said and smirked at the chaos you created and sat back down, leaning on the back of the chair and smugly taking a sip of your water

‘oh the power i hold in my hands’

you teased and oikawa pointed at you

‘when! how long!’

you looked at hajime who was so shocked that his eyes glazed over and a passerby wouldve thought he was dead

‘apparently 3 months’

oikawa started counting and his eyes widened at that thought

‘you-! you stayed in argentina! in my house! my house-!’

‘yep. both of them created under your house’

Silence.

No bickering, no fighting and no stupid jokes.

Pure deafening silence.

The two were no longer speaking, although they had the clear to- he couldn't bring himself to forgive him, not yet and truthfully he didn’t know if he would ever be able to forgive him.

After what he put the team through, what he caused them and what he did to them- to their relationship.

Buck and Eddie sat on opposite ends of the station, the blond on the couch and the brunette in the kitchen. Both glancing at the other when the other isn’t looking, hoping they’d think of something to say to each other.

Everyone can feel the tension, it hits whoever enters their vicinity like a brick wall.

Eddie blew up at Buck the day in the grocery store and since then, neither of them had spoken to the other unless they were in the field. They worked seamlessly there. Wordless communication, in-sync as always yet the moment they step off the truck, all of that goes out the window and they go separate ways.

Buck came close to talking to him one day while unpacking the halloween decoration. Eddie had walked past him, the urge to call for him and tell him that he was sorry but he didn’t.

A part of him knew that Eddie would forgive him but another part of him felt that Eddie would still hold it against him somehow.

Buck didn’t know Eddie as well as he thought he did.

Eddie’s pace was much slower than normal as he passed by, his heart pounding in his chest just waiting for Buck to call out to him and to fix what had broken but he didn’t.

“Dad?” the boy called from the kitchen table, his father’s back to him.

Eddie was washing dishes, the sponge in his hand and the tap running but his eyes were fixated on something outside the window. Christopher gets up and walks over to his father, turning off the tap then Eddie looks down. “Oh sorry bud, did you ask me something?” he puts the sponge down and turns to his son.

The look on Christopher’s face was enough for Eddie to internally groan, not because of Chris but because of what he was about to ask.

“Where’s Buck?”

And there it was.

“Buck’s been busy bud” Eddie tells his son. This wasn't a complete lie, from the overheard conversations in the station, it seemed like Buck had been busy.

“When is he coming over? We were supposed to have movie night” Chris sounded sad. Eddie knows how much Chris loves and looks up to Buck and for him not to be around was killing him.. because of Christopher of course.

“I’ll ask him tomorrow,” Eddie leans and kisses the top of the boy’s head.

“Bed now, I’ll come tuck you in, in a minute” Eddie smiles until he can no longer see Chris then a heavy sigh is let out. Chris isn’t the only one that misses Buck.

He did too.

Regardless of what had happened, Buck had been his best friend for the last year and a half. The person he confided in, the one who had his back and most importantly, the guy who was basically raising Christopher with him. It had been so hard not being able to talk to him those few weeks that the lawsuit was happening and now that they can talk, he doesn’t know what to say.

Where do you begin after that ?

What you did was fucked up and I hate you but I don’t because I actually love you and I need you in my life.

Yeah, there was no way he was going to say that to Buck. The thought of Buck was pushed back when Chris shouted that he was waiting. He shook the worry from his face, mustering up a smile as he stepped into Chris’s room.

“Alright kiddo, bedtime” Eddie pulls the blanket over his son, sitting on the bed beside him now. Chris looks up at his dad, “are you okay?”

“Hm?” Eddie’s brows furrow, unsure as to what brought up the question.

“Are you okay?” he asks his father again.

“Yeah, why wouldn't I be?” he chuckles, his hand patting Christopher’s leg.

“Okay” Chris smiles at his father, deep down he knew something was wrong and Eddie knew that his son knew that he wasn't okay but there wasn't time for that now. Eddie held himself together, he only had him and he had to be strong.

Eddie kisses Chris’s cheek, tucking the sides of the blanket in and turning on his night light. “Goodnight bud” he smiles from the doorway, about to shut the door. Chris calls out for his father once more and Eddie sticks his head back into the room, looking at Chris.

“I love you” he says from bed.

Eddie smiles, “I love you too.” the door shuts and his smile falls from his face.

How much longer would he have to keep up this facade?

When and how would they fix things?

Because no part of Eddie wants to explain to Christopher why Buck isn't around anymore and honestly, Eddie doesn't want to lose him but he lacked the words to tell him exactly how he felt.

His room feels cold and empty, it usually is but this time feels like the house is running out of happiness and warmth and there’s nothing he could do to fix it.

As he lays on his bed, his phone lights up. A notification from Chim, asking if he could help him move some furniture around. He answers and then he stares at the phone in his hand.

“l’ll ask him tomorrow” his words rang in his head. He hits Buck’s contact- what to say and how to say it.

To Buck: Are you free Saturday ? Chris wants to see you.

Less than a minute goes by before his phone chimes.

From Buck: I am. What time is okay for me to come over?

From Buck: Should I bring anything ?

To Buck: I’ll drop him off at your place. I have something to do.

From Buck: Okay. Is 6 okay ?

To Buck: Fine.

It was utter bullshit and they both knew that. Eddie had absolute nothing to do, in fact he was probably gonna go back home and hang out. It’ll be weird for him to be there when they aren’t speaking, hence why he's taking Chris to Buck and not letting him come to them because if they were at home, there would be nowhere for Eddie to avoid him.

“Buck!” The little boy’s face lights up when he opens the door.

“Chris!” Buck smiles with the same happy energy. The two of them hugging for a moment before Chris turns to say bye to Eddie.

“Be good mijo, I'll be back later” Eddie kisses the top of his head before he walks off into the apartment.

Buck looked at Eddie, his brows furrowed and he was chewing on his lip without even noticing. “You- You’re not coming in?” Buck asks quietly, his words barely coming out.

Eddie shakes his head, “got stuff to do, text me when he’s ready to come home.” he hands Chris’s backpack over to him and turns the other way and down the hall. Buck steps out of the apartment, in the hallway in front of his door and he just watches Eddie leave. He wanted to run after him and tell him that he’s sorry but he doesn’t.

The afternoon went by rather quickly, Buck and Chris catching up on what Chris had been doing at school, they began playing the new game Buck had gotten and they had pizza for dinner and ate on the couch while watching the sonic the hedgehog movie because Buck promised him that they would watch together.

Chris sat on the couch, his eyes glued to the tv screen until the end credits began rolling, then he yawns and sinks back into the pillows on Buck’s couch.

“Tired?” Buck looks over at Chris who gives him a sleepy smile and nods.

To Eddie: Chris is falling asleep, I think it’s time for him to get to bed

From Eddie: Ask him if he wants to spend the night. There are clothes in his bag

Buck was taken back by the message, not by Eddie suggesting that Chris spend the night because the 3 of them had sleepovers on a regular basis when he and Eddie were speaking but that Eddie was allowing him to stay. He assumed that because they weren't speaking that Eddie would want Chris to come home.

“Bud, do you want to stay over? Dad said it’s cool”

“Mhm, yeah” Chris’s eyes were shut, he was already halfway to dreamland by now. Buck smiled at the boy.

To Eddie: He just fell asleep, you can pick him up around noon ?

From Eddie: Okay

Saturday at 11:58am and Buck is dancing around his kitchen with a glass of orange juice in his hand. Chris had slept in and he made him breakfast. Buck was on his way to handing Chris the juice but he got caught up in the song that was playing.

Christopher sat at the counter, laughing as Buck danced. Buck was slowly but surely making his way over when there was a knock at the door. He sat the juice beside the plate, pressed a kiss to Chris’s head and shouted that he was coming when the person knocked a second time.

He pulled the door open, Eddie stood at the door with his arms folded.

Buck gave him a small smile, “at ease soldier” he said jokingly, the joke had delivered and failed all in one, the smile on his face dropped too.

“Is he ready?” Eddie looked at him, Buck stepped back so Eddie could see in. Chris was still sitting at the counter eating his breakfast, he smiled and waved when he noticed his dad at the door.

“Do you want to come in?” Buck’s eyes silently pleading for him to accept the offer.

“Sure” the one word was all he got from Eddie for the next 20 minutes.

He spoke to Christopher and waited for his son to finish eating so they could leave. The tension in the apartment was heavy and uncomfortable, Eddie egging Chris to finish up every 5 minutes so they could get out of there.

Buck had opened his mouth to speak multiple times, at this point there was nothing more that he wanted more than for Eddie to forgive him.

The way his heart clenched in his chest whenever he saw Eddie or had to work with him wasn't normal.

The way he smiled lovingly and stared adoringly at him wasn't normal either because friends don’t look at friends that way.

Buck loved Eddie more than the average friend. He didn’t know if Eddie reciprocated those feelings but now he’d never know.

“Bye Buck!” Chris’s arms wrapped around Buck snapping him out of his thoughts, his hand reaching down to rub his back softly. “Bye bud, thanks for hanging out with me” he smiles sweetly at the boy before looking at his father who was already waiting by the door with his bag.

Buck walks Chris over to the door, they share one more hug before he steps out. Once again, Buck finds himself in the hallway wanting to go after them- after Eddie- but it’s like he’s frozen in time, he can’t bring himself to move towards them. Christopher smiles and waves before he steps on the elevator and Eddie, he just looks at him. Opening his mouth like he was going to say something but instead a sigh comes out, his gaze lowers and he joins Chris.

It was a while before Buck heard from Eddie again. Usually, he would have texted to let him know that they got home and were okay but instead radio silence for the next 6 and a half hours.

His phone chimes, rolling over and grabbing it off the table, there’s a notification from Eddie.

To Buck: Thanks for last night, he had a good time

From Buck: Thanks for bringing him over, I didn’t realize how much I missed him

To Buck: He missed you too

Buck was about to type a response when the little grey dots appeared, disappeared and reappeared. He waited, looking down at the phone in his hands watching as the dots appeared and disappeared. At some point, Buck put the phone down, he got tired of waiting.

On the other side of the screen, Eddie sat on his couch with the phone in his hand. His last message to Buck telling him that Christopher missed him and he quickly typed out I missed you too but his finger hovered over the send button. Now reaching for the delete key, erasing the message. Eddie tried a few versions of that message.

To Buck: I missed you so much you don’t even understand

That one didn’t sound like him and made him seem desperate.

To Buck: Chris wasn’t the only one that missed you

What was he trying to do? Flirt with him? well.. maybe but this is not the time.

To Buck: Come over, let’s talk

Yeah if let’s talk is code for we’re probably gonna end up in bed.

To Buck: I don't know what I want to say but I need you here, things aren't the same without you.

This one felt right because it was the truth. Eddie had absolutely no idea what he wanted to say to Buck or if he would even say anything to him but he needed him. Things aren’t the same without Buck around, home didn’t feel like home without him.

Finger hovering over the button but he deletes the message, the phone getting tossed to the other side of the couch before getting up to check on Chris.

The men find themselves in this situation rather often. Eddie texts Buck asking when Chris can see him, Eddie drops off Chris or sometimes Buck picks him up and then when Chris comes home, Eddie texts Buck to say thanks.

Sometimes Buck is the one watching the little grey dots appear and disappear but sometimes Eddie is the one who finds himself in that spot.

It was as if they were two parents sharing joint custody of their son and having that awkwardness of what to say when the kid isn't around and honestly, that was exactly their situation. They played nice and spoke the bare minimum when Chris was around or if Chris had a school event and asked for them both to be there, they would both be there with their best smiles on and they'd make small talk with the other parents but the moment they stepped back out of that building, all of that went out the window.

Without Chris around, their conversations were nonexistent.

Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months and they turned into passing ships in the night.
