That Time There Were Bees In My Chimney
Picture little Gh0st, a mere ten years old at most. This was before the first big move of my life, so my family was still living in what I consider my childhood home. Little Gh0st is sitting in the living room, probably absently staring into space or reading some National Geographic magazine (this was before I lost the focus to read literally anything).
When suddenly. My autism hyper-senses pick up on something. Something that sounds similar to… buzzing.
Now, I have tinnitus, and have since I was a kid. But I could identify that this was an external noise because the intensity and volume changed as I moved around, and lessened when I plugged my ears. After a bit of investigation, I identified the sound was coming from the chimney.
Cut to my parents, working downstairs in their office, being interrupted by their gremlin child standing in their doorway, saying, “I think there’s bees in our chimney.”
To my parents’ credit, they did come to check the chimney. However, my mother does not have the same autism senses I have, and while my dad sort of does, he was also starting to lose his hearing at this point. So neither of them hear the buzzing of the interloping bees. I don’t remember exactly how they dismissed me - probably either saying that I was imagining it or letting me down easy while secretly convinced I made it up to get their attention - but either way, they returned to their work.
At this point, I just accepted that, sure, I must have just imagined it. Somehow. Or I was hearing things. So I let it go.
And it remained let go. Until, over the next few weeks, the buzzing grew louder. And louder. Until it was loud enough that even my parents could hear it.
Bug control was called - or more specifically, someone who dealt with bee removal. And when this beekeeper man looked into the top of our chimney, he did not find just a few stray bees. No - he found an entire hive of them. I was very excited to learn about these bees as he transferred the queen to a seperated container and got all the other bees to follow suit.
Our chimney was now thankfully free from bees, but to this day I still feel vindicated that, no, I wasn’t just imagining things. There were indeed bees in that chimney, and my hyper-senses would have gotten them removed before the hive got that big, had more investigation been done at the time.

How to cure a broken heart
Synopsis: love might come in in various shapes. With Kuroo it came with a snowball.
Honorable mentions: tw cursing, it's 2.4k words, genre is fluff, hope you guys like it!!
Its a short lil fluffy Kuroo blurb since its snowing very heavy here and I kinda broke your hearts with that last angst lol
You never thought you were the type to partake in something so cliche, something as falling in love with your next-door neighbor. It was overused at this point, it wasn't even your favorite trope to read anymore, and you would've died laughing if someone told you you would meet the guy you fell in love with like this.
But overused as it is, it still came in as a surprise, and that was Kuroo Tetsurou for you, managing to make even the most monotonous thing surprising.
It was the morning after a night of heavy snow, hearing the rustle of walking on fresh, unpressed snow beneath your feet making you bite back a smile. It had been a while since it snowed this much where you lived, so you didn't refuse when your mother offered you to take a walk.
I'm sure you'll feel better if you take a breath of fresh air, she told you, taking note of your foul mood.
She was right, it smells like winter, and the familiar smell didn't fail to make you take a breath of relief, as if you were suffocating the past few days.
It had been a while since you even left your house, you realized, even before the quarantine started, you weren't the type to go out and socialize around the block. You usually met with your friends at a cafe around your school or an arcade or something, but it was rare for you to hang out in your neighborhood area, thus ended with you not knowing any of your neighbors.
You had never intended to get to know them either, but it wasn't your choice to make anymore when you noticed a perfect sphere of snowball flying towards you, you dodged it the last second with reflexes you didn't even know you had (you didn't. it was pure luck).
As you turned to where the snowball came from, your eyes locked on a smug, sneaky grin, obviously amused by the shocked expression on your face. It was a boy about your age, leaning proudly on a snowman that was almost as tall as him, his smile more noticeable even than his odd, inky black ruffle of hair or the piercing golden eyes that had something of a clever glint to them.
His grin felt infectious, and you could feel a smile tugging on the corners of your lips, and it was the smile that would never fail to make you smile back, except for that particular day.
It hadn't made you smile, nor had it disputed the mean frown on your lips as you quirked a brow at him, only making his grin spread wider on his lips. "Sorry," he muttered, not sounding the slightest bit apologetic, nor had he stopped smiling teasingly. "Didn't mean to throw it at you."
You took the apology with a soft nod, turning your back to him, and started walking, sighing when you felt a hand tap your arm gently.
"Hey, me again." He grinned, and you mustered a smile. "Hi." You answered back, pressing your lips together awkwardly.
"I'm Kuroo Tetsurou," he informed you. "Your next door neighbor, I think."
"Y/N, L/N." You answered, "nice to meet you, Kuroo-san."
"Nice to meet you, too." He then tilted his head, eyes grazing on you for another while, and he looked like he wanted to talk even more even though the conversation was very obviously over. "That was pretty impressive, you know?" Another smile formed on his lips as he scratched the back of his neck and averted his eyes away from you, and you could feel butterflies fluttering in your stomach.
"Thanks. Your snowman is pretty impressive, too." It was. The guy was almost 2 meters, and it made no sense for the snowman to be as tall as him, too, but it still was pretty impressive.
Not expecting him to throw his head back and start laughing loudly at your comment, you couldn't help but watch him like you were witnessing some miracle. You couldn't look away as he bent forward, holding his stomach all the while his body shook. It was infectious, you realized, since you also found yourself chuckling not half a minute later.
He took a deep breath as his laughter died, still chuckling now and then, he turned to you. "It is impressive, isn't it? Had nothing better to do in quarantine, you know?" He shrugged, trying to look modest, but he beamed with pride.
He weaved his hand through the raven locks of hair that fell on his face, making you wonder if they were as soft as they looked. You quickly discarded the idea.
"Well, I won't bother you any longer." He grinned, "but I'll see you around!"
You watched him as he turned his back to you, giving you just a second to admire how tall and broad he was before he flashed you one last smile and a wave.
~
You found yourself still smiling as you entered your house, tapping your feet on the wood to rustle off the snow off your shoes.
"Wow, maybe I should take a walk, too." Your mother teased when she took note of your smile and relaxed posture. "Did you have fun?"
"I met our next-door neighbor today." You told her after nodding your head. "The poor boy, approaching you at your moodiest. I hope he's still in one piece." She teased, brows quirking when you laughed along instead of protesting.
"Have you met him already?"
"Yeah, we crossed paths once or twice, cute boy. I think he studied in Nekoma Highschool?" She shrugged when she couldn't remember clearly. "Still, it's nice to see he was able to make you smile."
He was nice, you had to admit. Maybe you would pay him a visit to apologize for your -slightly- rude behavior today? Nah, you'd rather wait till the next time you crossed paths, you decided.
As you averted your eyes to the wall both the houses shared, you thought if you'd cross paths soon.
~
You did. The next day, if you wanted to be exact.
You were startled by the sounds coming from the bushes separating your garden from your neighbors, rasing from your chair, you gazed from the window to see what it was, only to see a head of messy black hair poking through the leaves.
It was impossible not to smile as you watched him lean towards something you couldn't quite see, reaching his hand to your garden and making kissing noises with a desperate expression on his face. "Mika," you heard him call out, "come here boy, that's not our garden."
It was a cat, you realized. (Either that, or he was a pervert.) Taking a breath of relief when you saw the furry tail of the animal, you thought it was time to show yourself (and tease him about it if you could)
"Kuroo-san?" You exited out to the garden, watching the boy as his eyes widened with shock, his body immediately pulling himself back, only to stay stuck between the branches of the bush. You stifled your laughter as he forcefully pulled his way out of it, cursing at the branches scratching him, his face flushing either because of the challenge he gave trying to free himself or of embarrassment.
"H-hi." He muttered as he finally regained his composure, tall enough to have a comfortable conversation with you over the bushes. (He could even lean in to kiss you over them without any problem, something you discovered sometime in the future)
"Are you okay?" You asked softly, still laughing as you watched him pull a small branch out of his hair.
"Yeah, I'm okay. More than okay, I was just- my cat ran into your garden, and I was trying to pull him back." He stammered as he noticed your chuckles. "Cat?" You repeated innocently.
"Yeah, my cat, he's right here- Mika?"
You couldn't hold your laughs back when you saw the baffled look on his handsome face when he noticed the cat wasn't there or anywhere to be seen.
"I swear he was right here!" He exclaimed, panicking. "I wasn't trying to peek in your garden, my cat- he- he-" He stopped his panicked explanation when he finally noticed how hard you were laughing. "You already knew, didn't you?"
"Yup, saw the whole thing." You answered between your occasional chuckles. "Wow, how mean!" He frowned, but you could tell he also found the situation amusing.
"You know, you didn't have to push through the bushes." You snickered. "you could just come in from the door like a normal person." A slight shade of red tinted his cheeks with your words, averting his eyes in embarrassment and scratching the back of his neck with a chuckle. "Yeah, that's probably a better idea."
It had turned into a routine quickly after that. Kuroo would knock on your window, a grin plastered on his face and waving at you from the other side of the glass.
At first, he always had some excuse, sometimes showing up with a plate of freshly baked cookies, telling you his grandma had cooked a little too much. "I'm sure you could smell them baking, and I didn't want you to miss out on the best cookies ever." He would beam. You didn't miss out on the smile that adorned his lips when you told him you could make coffee for the both of you and you could eat it together.
Talking with Kuroo was relaxing, at the very least.
He was a good listener, and his presence enough was soothing. He could calm you when you felt stressed, oddly good at it, too, laughing when you told him that one day. "I have a friend like this." He had shrugged. "A childhood friend, we used to live pretty close, too. I got used to it after a while, I guess."
He would watch you with thoughtful eyes as you spoke as if you were saying the most important thing, even if you were telling him about your day.
Kuroo was also one of the funniest people you knew. He had so many stories from when he was the captain of his volleyball team in high school, the things he told you always making you have a stomach ache from laughing so hard.
A friendship developing so quickly, it would usually end with you getting scared and pushing people who were getting so dear to you away from you, afraid of trusting them, even more than you did.
But not with him, you couldn't, wouldn't. Trusting Tetsurou didn't feel terrifying like it did with everyone else, instead, it felt good. It felt so safe, so cherishing to finally be able able to trust someone with everything you had, and you had never felt this protected and secure being so vulnerable with anyone.
It was the next winter you showed up in his garden, picking up snow from the ground and working on it for a few minutes to make sure you had two perfect spheres you felt all warm inside despite the cold weather.
Throwing the first snowball on his window, you grinned to yourself as you waited for the boy to come out, waiting for the chance to catch him off guard and hopefully manage to hit him square in the face.
Your eyes narrowed when he didn't come out after a few minutes, grabbing more snow from the ground and throwing another snowball on the window. This one you had sent a bit harder, and he must've heard it if he was at home.
When he didn't come out after that either, you frowned, standing up. Just then, you noticed a snowball flying towards you, dodging it the last second before turning that way with wide eyes.
"No-" You managed to choke out before the grinning boy wrapped his arms around you, caging your body against his, and threw himself on the snow, pulling you with him to be buried in the snow together.
"Tetsu!" You whined, even though you were laughing so hard that you were gasping for air. "That wasn't fair!"
"And yours was?" He laughed, his body still over yours, making it hard to breathe for you. "Get off me, I can't breathe." You managed to choke out between your laughter, your eyes lingering on his smiling lips that were a few inches away from yours.
"Because I'm so handsome?" He teased.
"No, because you're heavy." You answered, laughing even more when he faked a gasp.
"So mean, always breaking your boyfriend's heart." He shook his head side to side, not moving an inch that would allow you to squirm out from under his body.
"Come on," you whined, emphasizing the last word. "Lemme breathe!"
"Nope! You broke my heart, so painful that I can't breathe, either! It's only fair, chibi-chan." He grinned, making you roll your eyes.
"Okay, okay." You sighed. "What do you want?" You already knew what he wanted since ever since he had crushed you beneath his, his eyes had never left your lips.
"Let me think. How can you cure a broken heart?"
He had his answer when you leaned forward, pressing your lips to his smiling, soft ones.

Top 10 films of 2019
Here’s my very belated top 10 films of 2019! Note that this is a list of films that were released in the UK theatrically in 2019, meaning it includes certain releases that would be considered to belong to 2018 by others.
Honourable mentions: Joker, Hustlers, Booksmart, A Private War, Fighting With My Family
(And don’t worry - Little Women, 1917 and Uncut Gems are all already on my list for 2020.)
Look out for my most anticipated films of 2020 list, coming soon!
With that out of the way, here’s my list (in ascending order)! Do share your picks in the comments!
10. The Irishman (dir. Martin Scorsese)
This is clearly the work of a master filmmaker with much on his mind. In telling the story of Frank Sheeran, Scorsese is telling the story of a man who makes his trade in violence. Instead of elevating Frank as a hero or a figure of glamour, he’s consistently shown to be rather pathetic. He stumbles into the role of hitman for various factions of the criminal underworld, and sticks to it seemingly because it’s what comes most easily to him. The violence enacted by Sheeran is inane and routine, with no thought given to the personal cost until it is far too late. The final 15 minutes of this film show a life petering out with a whimper, laying bare the indignities of old age and the cold, empty horror of enduring it with no company besides your own regrets. The Irishman is a portrait of a life lived badly, and in the hands of anyone besides Scorsese it could have been dry and tedious. Instead, the filmmaking is incredibly assured and the editing is whip-sharp (in Thelma Schoonmaker we trust), making it a pleasure to watch even with the lengthy runtime.
9. The Farewell (dir. Lulu Wang)
The Farewell is a personal story about a young Asian-American woman (Awkwafina) struggling to reconcile her heritage with her current situation and values - specifically, she is tested when her grandmother is diagnosed with cancer and the wider family make the decision to hide the truth from her. The Farewell does a fantastic job of generating empathy for all the different perspectives and positions in play, but it’s truly anchored by Awkwafina’s amazingly nuanced and tender performance - basically, anyone who’s ever loved a grandparent should leave this feeling incredibly moved and inspired. The themes of The Farewell are both specific to the Asian-American experience and general to anyone who has struggled with maintaining bonds over a vast distance, whether physical or cultural. Lulu Wang is an exciting new voice in cinema, and I will watch her career with great interest.
8. Pain & Glory (dir. Pedro Almodóvar)
Almodóvar is one of my favourite filmmakers, and one of the reasons I love his work so much is its wild diversity. My favourite from him is The Skin I Live In, a film that could not be more different than Pain & Glory. This is a small, very personal film telling the story of a middle-aged director (Banderas, clearly playing a version of Almodóvar himself) who’s struggling with his legacy as a filmmaker and the increasing privations attached to middle age. Suffering in the present, Salvador finds himself retreating into memories of his childhood - particularly of his mother (Penelope Cruz) and his first crush. The childhood sequences were where the film really sung for me, perfectly capturing the sun-dappled glow of reminiscences of childhood. And the ending, where Almodóvar truly shows his hand, is delightfully mischievous and the perfect cap on this very personal picture.
7. Once Upon a Time in ... Hollywood (dir. Quentin Tarantino)
This is a slice of life movie, but while that might call to mind ‘kitchen sink’ dramas, this is unabashedly a ‘slice of life’ movie about Hollywood and the mythology that has developed around it. It’s meandering and feels rather aimless for the bulk of its runtime, but that’s kind of the point. It’s exactly what the title promises in that it recaptures what life was like in a very specific time and in a very specific place - it’s an idealised, loving depiction of the Hollywood of the time, with the movie stars, flawed and fading as they are, cast as heroes menaced by the drugged-up hippies poised to dismantle the status quo. It ends in the fashion you’d expect from Tarantino, but here I found his revisionist approach to history remarkably poignant and effective. Film is a magic medium, with Hollywood serving as the ultimate dream factory - it feels completely right that Tarantino would attempt to use celluloid to right one of the great tragedies of Hollywood history.
6. One Cut of the Dead (dir. Shinichirou Ueda)
I went into this with no expectations whatsoever - and what a treat it was! One Cut of the Dead is easily one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in years, taking what initially seems like a trite concept (a crew is filming a zombie movie at a desolate location ... only to discover that the zombies are real!) and twisting it in a truly ingenious way. The comedy is very broad, but it is consistently delightful and always manages to avoid becoming crass - the movie even has some really sweet family dynamics at the centre of it, which gives it some real emotional heft. The success of this film is heavily reliant on a major twist that occurs part-way through, so the best advice I can give you is to stay as far away from spoilers for this one as possible - go in blind, and you will be amply rewarded for your faith.
5. Midsommar (dir. Ari Aster)
I went into this film with reservations, since I wasn’t a huge fan of Hereditary (by the same director), which I found to have extraordinary moments but iffy execution overall. This movie, however, wowed me. While marketed as a freaky/arty horror film, the director has described it as a fairy tale, which is the level on which is spoke to me. Midsommar follows Dani (an incredible Florence Pugh), a young woman who has suffered a terrible loss, as she travels with her boyfriend and his friends to a pagan festival in the Swedish countryside. Dani is painfully isolated, and her grief is hers to shoulder alone since her boyfriend is un-receptive and entirely unprepared to help her. Over the course of the film, destruction and creation are conflated in ways that are both beautiful and horrific - this film spoke to me on a profound level, and the way it ended gave me an incredible sense of catharsis. This won’t be for everyone, for I found it to be a deeply special film. Let’s all raise a toast to the imminent, and much welcome, reign of Florence Pugh.
4. Parasite (dir. Bong Joon-Ho)
Parasite is that rare film that more than lives up to the massive hype surrounding it (you don’t get more hyped than winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards!). It’s hard to write about this film without spoilers, since so much of the joy of Parasite lies in discovering what the hell is going on. This is an ‘upstairs downstairs’ movie for the 21st century, where the downstairs people have fierce designs on the lives and pleasures enjoyed by their social superiors. The rich people here are not vilified, though they are depicted as vapid and shallow, perpetually searching for new ways to fill their lives with meaning. Their struggling counterparts from the rough side of the city are struggling only to get by - their lives too hard to allow time for such indulgences. This is a film about the fantasy of social advancement, and the power that dreams have to hold us in thrall to hopeless ambitions. It’s masterfully directed, acted and designed, and it has been extremely gratifying to see it receive such widespread recognition.
3. Marriage Story (dir. Noah Baumbach)
I was always going to see this (hey Adam Driver!) but I was entirely unprepared for how great Marriage Story was. Easily Baumbach’s best film, Marriage Story is a masterclass in acting and character writing - it’s fiercely intelligent in how it constantly forces you to reassess what you’re seeing and where your sympathies lie. Does Charlie seem like an oblivious, navel-gazing asshole? Sure, but he’s also confused and vulnerable and thrown entirely off balance by his awakening consciousness of his wife’s dreams and ambitions. Nicole is self-effacing and self-denying, as so many women are, which makes her emerging confidence and newfound sense of direction incredibly satisfying to witness. In the second half of Marriage Story, Driver’s Charlie undoubtedly takes the spotlight - it’s clear to me that he becomes the focus largely because he continues to flounder as Nicole finds her footing. Baumbach, wisely I feel, is most interested in his characters when they’re lost, struggling to be better but barely understanding what that means. Even if you don’t sympathise with Charlie by the end of Marriage Story, I can promise you will come away with a thorough understanding of him thanks to Driver’s extraordinary performance. Superlative work, all round. (It’s also, just for the record, the only film of 2019 to make me cry.)
2. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (dir. Céline Sciamma)
This is the 2019 film I am most excited to see again (it’s coming out in a week in the UK - I’m so excited!). Sciamma’s film is an incredibly moving and deeply beautiful love story, depicting how a female artist in 18th century France falls in love with the woman she has been covertly employed to paint. Portrait is very much a film about the act of looking, and in many ways it’s the ultimate female gaze film - it’s all about women looking at women, as depicted by a female filmmaker. Gazes are political as much as they’re romantic - here, our two heroines drink each other, aware of exactly how dangerous and forbidden their mutual intoxication is. The woozy thrall of their relationship is exquisitely conveyed through the cinematography and direction, and the final shot - which I won’t spoil - is an all-timer that serves as an exquisite coda to the entire film. This is a truly superb film, and I’m still incensed that it received no substantial awards recognition. Let’s hope it goes down in film history as the masterpiece it is, yet another omission proving the limitations of the Oscars as a metric for great art.
1. The Favourite (dir. Yorgos Lanthimos)
This completely wowed me, and against all the odds it stuck with me as the best film I saw in 2019 - it features a trio of magnificently compelling female characters (played by Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone) operating at the court of Queen Anne (Colman is Anne, Weisz and Stone are courtiers), and is laser-focused on the shifting sands of the power dynamics between them. The script is savage without sacrificing poignancy, witty without ceasing to be emotionally honest. And while I’ve seen some react to this film as a comedy (and it certainly has laughs, most of which are tightly packaged with shock), for me it was very clearly a drama about the inscrutable and complicated relationships that exist between women. Specifically, it is about how those relationships run the gamut from sincere affinity to ruthless manipulation. This is a spectacular movie, visually and thematically rich in every frame, and it also has the best use of an Elton John song in 2019 (sorry, Rocketman!).
Fly away, skyline pigeon fly, towards the things you’ve left so very, so very far, behind.

AnS Fic Rec Bingo
A fic that got you involved in fandom: Drink Deep of Lethe by @sabraeal | T In short: it has everything I love about early Shirayuki, early Obi, and early Obiyuki. Two people, both on the run, meeting in the deep Wood and converging paths by pure chance. It’s such a fun read!! I first read this on Obiyuki Week 2016 and was just so inspired that I was like “man, I really want to write something for this event too” :D So that is how it got me involved in the fandom.
Made you laugh out loud: I Should’ve Met You Yesterday by @bubblesthemonsterartist | E First of all, I eat ‘Obi gets a support system kicking and screaming’ with a spoon. Second, and more specific to this bingo square, bb Aki is an agent of love and chaos and Obi has absolutely 0 game when it comes to Shirayuki. And it’s the cutest and funniest story!!! Things that made me laugh include: the entire chapter Obi and Aki meet Zen and Mitsuhide, “Here lies what was left of Obi’s game” scene, and Aki trying to get dada to kiss Shirayuki’s booboo, AND MUCH MORE.
Favourite trope reversal: An Earthly Knight by @claudeng80 | T I find fae stories really intriguing and interesting even though (or maybe even because) I know like, the bare minimum of background info. Like they’re just so cool and fun. ANYWAY, I loveddddd how even though Obi is Shirayuki’s guard, this fic is her trying to rescue him in a way only she can - with DETERMINATION and IMMENSE BRAVERY <3 A beautiful story.
Action-packed fight scene: The Moon, the Window, the Knife by @glitter-and-golden | G Over 2000 words and my breath was held the entire time. A super cool fic about Wistal castle being attacked by NINJAS which also means OBI BADASSERY :’D But also it’s not Obi if he doesn’t get hurt in the process and him and Shirayuki protecting each other, because we love that food. Delicious. 5 stars.
Gen fic: It’s a Difficult Conversation by @nebluus | T A DIFFICULT CONVERSATION IT WAS INDEED. For Ryuu, being barely a teen who has people he really looks up to, seeing those people hurt is rough. And for a healer, not being able to help them in the way he knows best is DOUBLEY ROUGH. But I just love that Shirayuki sits with him and explains this very hard stuff about trauma in the most compassionate and understanding way.
Canon divergent: i am become death by @bubblesthemonsterartist | M So in 2017 Bubbles and ISM decided to have an angst battle and the rest of us took a ton of collateral damage to the emotions like NYC at the end of an Avengers movie. In answering the question ‘what if Obi didn’t find Shirayuki in time during Tanbarun arc?’, Bubbles weaves this piece of Absolute Art and it’s just...amazing. Horrifies me in the best of ways.
Wept real tears: Nothing Was My Own (Before I Loved You) by @sabraeal | T Specifically, Making Good made me cry real tears. We love a good slow burn, especially that moment where one of them realises they’re in love with the other and just HOW important they are in their life. It’s beautiful and moving!! And also has fluffy AND funny Obiyuki moments that make me squeal. But also the entire WFB series is an AMAZING fic of everybody’s journey thru college and young adult lives and I think about it all the time.
FREE SPACE: The Most Versatile of Guards by @claudeng80 | T A favourite of mine!!!!! :DD So many fun and cool adventure times with herbwitch!Shirayuki and shapeshifter!Obi and I loveddd the Mihaya interludes. The entire world is just so creative and seeing all the characters as different beings is so much fun. And their romance makes me SQUEEEEEEE.
Fav fanmade OC: I gotta give this one to Aki from I Should’ve Met You Yesterday. Number one precious bb with the MOST personality and he’s so much fun to read.
First AnS fic you read: The Automation Heart by @infinitelystrangemachinex | T The first chapter ALREADY had me wrecked. In general AND for this ship. I am also due for a reread. But I remember reading all the chapters that were published then in a single night just being like “oh my god this is so good. MOAR PLS” *clicks next chapter*
Favourite minor character: Garack Gazelt, particularly in The road to Clarines is gravel (M) by @codango, (don’t go) making something out of nothing (T) by @sabraeal, and Dead Men Tell No Tales by @bubblesthemonsterartist (T) (the last which I need to go into the AO3 comments and yell about because OHHHH MY GOD). I always love seeing her. She’s badass and smart and amazing and every time I see her I go *heart eyes*
WIP: Damned by @ruleofexception | No rating ZOMBIES ARE SCARY BUT YOU KNOW WHAT’S ALSO SCARY??? BEING ALONE. AND HAVING YOUR FREEDOM TAKEN AWAY. But no really I love sooo many things about this fic, like the wonderful Found Family, tragic backstories and some amazing story arcs. I look forward to every time this updates.
Canon compliant: Knots by @krispy-kream | G ABSOLUTE FANDOM CLASSIC 10/10. I just love how it all starts as a game for him. Because why take it seriously when he can’t have her for real? AND THEN HE GOES OH SHIT, OH FUCK I’M IN TOO DEEP. And things just unfold wonderfully from there!!!!! Like it’s such a classic “Obi is wrecked and he is slowly losing it with how much he likes his Miss”.
One-shot: Life Eternal by @ruleofexception | No rating Devil!Obi and Angel!Shirayuki is just...THE MOST WONDERFUL OF CONCEPTS. And not only are they on opposite sides, working against each other to either make people’s lives better or worse, she becomes a literal devil’s GUARDIAN ANGEL. And that makes way for such an interesting story and I love its open end <3 It was a really fun fic!!
Rare pair: Cookies for Shikito (Shirayuki x Shikito) by @claudeng80 | G PLS THIS FIC IS SO FLUFFY <3 <3 <3 They’re such a cute ship. Just two absolute cinnamon buns spending time together while Shirayuki makes cookies and Shikito PROTECCS. They’re so fluttery and adorable!!!!!!! I love it!!!!!!!!
AU you took a chance on and now love: Sic Semper Monstrum by @sabraeal | T I simply do not know many Things, including common source materials for AUs. Including Pacific Rim, which I still haven’t watched (but need to, PROBABLY) but I. LOVE. THIS. AU. The importance that is placed on intimacy and emotional connection with the entire concept of drifting and also just like, life in general??? I thoroughly enjoy (as always) the exploration of everyone’s thoughts and backstories and relationships and also psychologist!Shirayuki <3
Pre-canon: ashes in the mouth, char the tongue by @infinitelystrangemachinex | T Both a pre-canon (childhood friends) and future fic!! The summary explains it better than I could: “Obi finally takes Shirayuki back to Tanbarun, but she gets more than she bargained for.” This fic ruined me (in a good way) and kicked my heart out of my chest and it rolled into a gutter (in a good way) and I almost missed my tram stop the first time I read it because I was so wrapped up in it. It was a RIDE.

Can you write a continuation of the Tim Drake x demigod reader where he introduced reader to the rest of the family?
a/n: This time it didn’t take years for me to finish this request lmfao! I didn’t write much interaction between the family because they’re so many members of the batfam and I can’t write group settings for the life of me??? but I def had some ideas about Damian and his curiosity towards Reader, anyway, anon! Hope you enjoy!
Meeting the family is inevitable, according to Annabeth after a long and winded rant about having dinner with Tim and his family from your end.
Granted, you knew most of his brothers and sisters in the Hermes cabin (including his three adopted siblings that he arrived at camp with), but knowing your fellow campers is one thing, getting to know them as the family he was raised with? That’s another matter altogether.
You knew of Dick Grayson, son of Aphrodite; Jason Todd, son of Ares; and Cassandra, daughter of Psyche. How could you not? They are prominent members of Camp Half-Blood. Maybe not like Percy and the rest of your group, but it‘s hard to ignore the adopted children of Bruce Wayne, ally of the gods and demigods (you had Wonder Woman and his adopted children to thank for that). Not only were they good looking, but they excelled in combat from the very moment they stepped foot into camp.
But you only know them as that—fellow campers. This is you getting to know them... better—intimately. And not to mention getting to finally meet THE Bruce Wayne and the rest of his mortal family members in person! No more second hand stories from Tim, or listening in on the stories his siblings would recount to the curious campers.
Wow. This is definitely out of your comfort zone, isn’t it?
A warm hand wraps around your cold fingers, steadying your shaky limbs.
“Hey,” Tim softly says, squeezing your fingers as another hand cradles your cheek. “They’re going to love you, χρυσή μου.”
My golden one. You practically melt at the softness and love in his voice when he calls you so. A reminder of how much you mean to him, of how much he loves you.
You smile involuntarily and lean into his touch.
You’re not given the chance to return the affection, the double doors of the manor being thrown open followed by a loud raucous of:
“He’s right there!” from Jason, and “Stop being such a dick,” from a tall, beautiful redhead with freckles followed by a lot more noise and bickering from what you assume is the rest of his family members.
You practically recoil, pulse beginning to pick up and fingers slowly beginning to twitch in his hold.
“Babe,” Tim starts, cutting through all the noise and he flashes you a smile, a reassuring one, with a squeeze of your hand. “I’m right here. I’ve got you.”
You nod and try to return the smile, but there’s no denying that his words and touch manage to ground you just a bit further.
“That's enough,” a deep, calm voice interjects, the earlier bickering coming to an abrupt stop as you remind yourself to breathe.
Bruce Wayne is a lot taller than you had imagined him to be—very handsome too. His stare is even more intense than you had expected, sharper and darker than the smolders he’d spare the pictures taken of him prompted or unprompted. And you can’t help the way your mind scans over him, searching and prodding like it usually does--there’s a darkness in this man that you can’t ignore. Burning deep and hot like hellfire. You wonder if it originates from his traumatic childhood, or if the darkness began to grow with the years--with his journey as the masked vigilante.
Tim has his own darkness, and so do his siblings, but Mr. Wayne? It seems to be tenfold. Controlled, sure, but barely hanging on by a thread.
Bruce pulls you out of your momentary awe, his voice somewhat gruff, but still managing to be kind. “Welcome home,” he says, mostly to Tim, but the small lift of his lips in your direction makes you feel welcomed as well. Yes, there’s a darkness in him, but there’s also a kindness that is rarely seen in others. It’s that kindness that you’re sure has raised Tim and his siblings, taught them that unbearable need to help others with no expectations of reciprocation. They’re just... kind to be kind.
Is it that kindness that stops him from bursting?
Tim tugs you along with him up the final steps of the manor where he hugs his adopted father after letting you go momentarily. “Thank you, Bruce.” He turns to you, holding out his hand for you to take and introducing you to him with an air of pride, as if he’s talked about you aside from being his partner to him before. And seeing the expression of familiarity flash behind Bruce’s blue eyes, you know he has.
“It’s nice to finally meet you,” you offer a bit shyly, unsure of whether to offer him your hand or if to lean in for a hug. You’re not exactly sure what the proper etiquette is to greeting a parent, let alone your boyfriend’s father. You’ve only had the chance to interact with Percy’s mom, and even that is rare. With the rest it’s always been a “hello! Must steal your child for a quest, bye!” Never a proper sit down where you can properly introduce yourself to them.
Relief fills you when Bruce helps you by offering you his hand, mindful of which hand Tim is holding to keep you steady—emotionally and physically. “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you in person. Tim and Diana speak highly of you.”
You immediately feel the heat crawl on your skin. What exactly have they said? “Likewise, Mr. Wayne. And I just want to say, on behalf of all my friends, thank you for all that you have done for us at camp. We really appreciate it.”
Tim squeezes your hand when Bruce chuckles lowly and asks for you to drop the formalities, telling you to call him Bruce instead.
Before anyone else can introduce themselves to you or you can take note of who else has followed Bruce and Jason to the door, Jason lets out a loud groan. “Can we hurry this along? We know who she is already and I’m hungry!”
“Jason,” the same redhead from before scolds him, smacking him—quite harshly, might you add—on the arm before extending her hand in your direction. “Barbara Gordon.” Ah! Dick’s ex girlfriend! You’ve heard Tim and Dick mention her a couple of times before. Mostly about how she’s always down Dick’s throat for being too reckless or something, you’re not entirely sure. “I’m so glad you’re finally able to join us for dinner! We’ve been trying to convince Tim to bring you along for a while now!”
You know they have been. Tim has mentioned it before, but at the time, you weren’t exactly ready to be in a crowded room with strangers. You’re still not completely ready, but after a talk with Hazel and Annabeth, you decided you couldn’t put it off for much longer.
As Hazel said, “You love Tim, whether you want to admit it or not. And it’s pretty obvious Tim loves you, too! Making an effort to meet his family would show that to Tim without you having to say those words just yet.”
You squeeze Tim’s hand, hoping she’s right. “I’m sorry.”
She waves her hand, a warm smile on her face. “No, I’m sorry if we all seem a little impatient. I really hope we don’t put you off! We’re all just a little... eager to meet the person that has stolen our Timmy’s heart.”
“Babs!” Tim whines, but it goes ignored by Barbara.
She laughs. “Come on in! The rest of the family is waiting in the den.”
Dinner is chaotic. Not as chaotic as dinner is back at camp, but it’s still pretty chaotic.
The youngest and only biological child of Bruce Wayne, is Damian, a boy with a sharp tongue and a curious thing, eyeing you before quickly looking away with a huff and pretending he hadn’t just been staring at you. Unlike the rest of the family, the darkness in him is a speck compared to theirs, even if he speaks with harsh words and an air of indifference. There’s more of a childish innocence that surrounds him, and you can’t help but wonder if it’s attributed to the rest of his family trying to help him make the most of his childhood.
You offer him a smile, one you hope doesn’t look strained or unnatural. You really do want to make him feel at ease with you. Make it easier for him to ask questions about you and your lineage like the rest of his family does.
Duke is the funniest of the group, not adopted, but still very much part of the family. He’s motivated, and just as smart as Tim, if their conversation about some riddle and case you briefly heard mentioned on the news is anything to go by. And just like Bruce and the rest of the family, he’s observant, maybe even more so than they are; offering you an out when it all becomes overwhelming by changing conversations or asking you if you need anything. He especially takes a liking to hearing stories of you and your mother, Athena, seemingly realizing that speaking about your mother is a clutch to you.
You can’t help it when you ask, “Are you sure you’re not a son of Athena’s?”
He’s taken aback by your question before laughing jovially. “That’d be so cool if I were, honestly! But nah, I’m just a regular ol’ meta-human.”
Dick snorts, leaning into your space to whisper loudly, as if to tease Duke—and completely ignoring the fact you lean away from him and closer to Tim—“Look at him nonchalantly trying to slip in that he’s not exactly human.”
Tim nudges Dick away from you with the palm of his hand, making his brother chuckle and back away with palms up in surrender. You thank Tim with a small smile which he returns.
Duke rubs the back of his head sheepishly. “How else was I supposed to say it?”
“Not at all,” Barbara adds in with a chirp, passing Cassandra the bowl of fruit that had been placed down by Alfred, their butler, something that you find really weird to say or even think. A butler! So weird.
“You guys are just jealous!”
Dick quirks an eyebrow in his direction. “I’m a child of Aphrodite.”
Jason pauses in his indulgence on seconds to flash him a smirk. “Ares.”
“Psyche,” Cassandra quietly adds as she adds fruit to her plate.
Tim grins. “Hermès.”
Damian glares at him without any heat. “My grandfather is Ra’s Al Ghul; my mother is Thalia Al Ghul; and my father is Batman.” Which is still wild to you. Who would’ve thought. I mean, other than the few conspiracies running around.
Barbara turns to you with an eye roll and you can’t help but laugh under your breath.
“Okay, all right, point taken! No need to flex. Damn.” Duke shakes his head. “A guy can’t even feel special.”
Bruce chuckles lowly. “You are special, Duke.” Duke lifts his head after huffing and beams, the rest of the family following after their father’s sincere words. “All of you are special.”
“But I’m more special, correct, father?”
A fond an exasperated chorus of “Damian!” fills the room.
The manor is quiet at night. Surprisingly enough.
Eleven people under one rooftop and you’re certain you could drop a pin on the floor and it’d resound throughout the manor.
And yet, even in the quiet, you and Tim lay awake in his childhood bedroom, too wired to fall asleep and give into your tiredness; both of you laying on your side and facing each other.
“You’re drained,” you whisper to Tim, brushing his hair falling over his eyes behind his ear.
He hums, closing his eyes as your fingers trail down the back of his ear and to his jaw. “I love my family, but it can be too much when everyone is together.”
You let out a small huff of a laugh, tapping your finger against his chin gently before dropping your hand down next to your face. “It’s not as bad as camp.”
“Maybe,” he agrees absentmindedly. “But at least at camp I can go hide out with you in your cabin or sneak off to the lake.”
”Guess so.”
His lashes flutter as brilliant blue eyes appear once more. “Meeting my family didn’t tire you out?”
You smile, hearing the worry in his voice. “A little. But it was fun meeting them. Loved them.”
“Yeah?” he asks, wrapping you up in his arms.
“Yeah,” you whisper, patting his chest with your palms, his heartbeat a soothing thump against your hand. “Almost as much as I love you.”
His long fingers wrap around your wrist just as it stutters under your hand. “Do you mean it?” He asks breathless, barely heard in the darkness of his room full of wooden book shelves and books you can’t believe he actually read at some point in his life.
“What?” You ask, watching him as he brings the hand that had been resting on his chest to his lips.
He presses a gentle kiss against your skin, eyes never leaving yours. “That you love me.”
You freeze, eyes moving from the hand he’s kissing to his brilliant blue eyes that don’t seem to ever stop sparkling. Even in the darkness he’s pure light, and you don’t understand how he can shine so brightly when the darkness surrounds him, practically ready to devour him. But you wouldn’t let it. You would never let that darkness take a hold of him. And if it ever did, you’d fight to bring him back, even if it meant going back to Tartarus, you would. “Yes,” you whisper.
His lips curve, smile growing and taking shape as he leans closer. Your hand rests on his cheek as you take him in; as he practically melts under your confession and touch. “I love you too, χρυσή μου.”

2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 21, 23, 48, 57, 65, 68, 87, 88 for random asks 😎😜
2. chocolate bars or lollipops?
Hmm… I’m actually not much of a chocolate person. I like the taste, cacao in my coffee, for example. But I can’t eat large amounts of pure chocolate, it just makes my mouth feel so dry and weird. But I don’t eat lollipops, either. They take too long, I rarely have that much time to indulge in sweets. What I really like are gummies. 😁
3. bubblegum or cotton candy?
Bubblegum for sure.
4. how did your elementary school teachers describe you?
I wondered about this question. Do people like… get such evaluations in elementary school? Do teachers tell what they think of the pupils? Because, here, they don’t.
All I can do is guess. So I assume that they would have described me as… Quiet? Shy? Withdrawn? Smart? Diligent? Helpful?
But honestly, I have no idea...
5. do you prefer to drink soda from soda cans, soda bottles, plastic cups or glass cups?
Vocabulary confusion… Soda being sparkly water or lemonade? I don’t really drink water at all. I know that it’s probably entirely psychological, but every time I drink pure water (sparkly or not), my stomach starts protesting. Either way, the answer would be glass cups. Unless it’s coffee or a hot chocolate, for which I have my mugs, I always use glass cups.
7. earbuds or headphones?
Earbuds.
8. movies or tv shows?
TV shows, mostly. I like how there’s more room to develop character and story arcs, and how the episodes are shorter so I can stop whenever I need to.
21. obsession from childhood?
Huh… I had many. But overall, the fantastical. Supernatural creatures, mostly dragons. Fantasy stories, stories that pull me out of reality and let me dream of something else. The idea that there’s more to the world, things we can’t see or understand (yet).
23. strange habits?
Just being me counts as strange, if you ask my kids. 🤣
48. if you were a fruit, what kind would you be?
… What kind of questions are these? 🤣🤣🤣 Erm… Okay, I actually just did THREE tests like “What kind of fruit are you?”. One said raspberry, one cherry, and the third said grape. I don’t feel like either of these options fits, though. A kiwi, maybe? I don’t look like much from the outside, not appealing but rather a little repellent. Once you got past that outer layer, though? I can be all kinds of things. Sweet, sour, juicy, fun, interesting.
57. the three biggest struggles you’ve overcome?
My insecurities as a child. Early school life was no fun for me. But at one point, and I remember the exact moment until this day, I decided that I don’t care about how others see me anymore. I do what I enjoy and like and stop trying to fit in. Life became so much better after that.
The same but in a different situation. I stopped trying to do what my ‘friend’ wanted and took hold of my own happiness. She never cared about my wishes or what made me happy and only treated me like her pet, something only there for her own amusement but only when she wanted it. Letting go of that friendship was hard, but necessary.
The need to be perfect. I won’t ever be the perfect housewife, won’t ever have a spotless and flawless home, with everything always clinically clean and orderly. I won’t ever be a perfect cook, with new, interesting, nutritious, inexpensive, tasty meals every day. I can’t be ONLY a mother 24/7, but need breaks in-between to be myself. All these expectations before were unrealistic anyway, build by advertisements and movies and society. But it took me a while to learn and accept that. That being myself is good enough.
65. any permanent scars?
Haha, yes. Stretchmarks from pregnancies and a scar from a c-section. But the funniest is on my arm. It’s just a small white line, 1,5 cm long.
When I was a teenager, we had a rabbit as pet. He was a little crazy sometimes. One day, he freely hobbled around in our flat. I was lying on the floor and watching TV with the rest of my family. Then, from one second to the other, the rabbit began to roar. Have you ever heard a rabbit ‘roar’? It sounds like… like my stomach when I’m hungry, only less threatening. 🤣 Then he proceeded to charge at me. And bit me in the arm. But because we had a wooden floor at that spot, he lost purchase and slid away, his teeth cutting that line into my arm. It didn’t even hurt or bleed much. It was just so damn funny! Until this day, we have no idea what set him off, before and after, he was absolutely peaceful.
68. worst flavor of any food or drink you’ve ever tried?
Uhm… does marzipan count? To me, that taste is disgusting. *shudders*
87. your greatest fear?
That something happens to my children.
Aside from that, I hate deep water. I can’t even watch sea life documentaries.
88. your greatest wish?
Just to live my life without regrets and big drama, to be honest. 😅

Thank you 😊💜

Hey miss wonderful taste in everything, can you recommend us some of your favorite KyoAni productions?
Sure! I love doing recs and I’m literally taking any sort of positive content related to KyoAni lately because we truly need it at the moment. Long post alert, though. Here goes my top 10:
1. Hyouka
This one will probably be my first choice forever. It’s KyoAni’s most brilliant work so far and easily one of the best animes I’ve ever watched, hands down. It’s also their finest novel-to-anime adaptation in my opinion, and one of the very few animation series that actually turned out better than their source material.
The books are extremely interesting, but they’re also bland. The alterations made to the anime added visual value to it in order to make it more alluring and appealing, turning ordinary situations into rather unique and thought-provoking settings, while managing to never deviate from its novel counterpart. The changes on the characters’ designs were also a very good choice in my opinion, as they fit more into the character archetypes and the impressions they give off.
This one is honestly an example for the whole anime industry and a timeless gem. I’m pretty certain that it was one of the studio’s turning points in terms of animation style. Surely will become a classic in the future.
2. Koe no Katachi
KyoAni’s most well-done movie, as far as I can tell. I’m specially fond of the symbolism of every scene and the effort put on the scenery, which gave an effect of depth to the frames. The studio managed to portray the mangaka’s art style while staying true to its own trademark traits as well.
Animation quality and sound design aside, it’s also loyal enough to the manga. There were cuts in order to fit the story into the time limit, but KyoAni made up for the gaps with later released specials. The movie is also considerably less dramatic than the original, yet I’m certain that the alterations in that regard were made so that the transition between the phases of the story wouldn’t feel rushed. Albeit in a much more uplifting way, it nevertheless managed to transmit the characters’ essence and emotions.
What caught my attention the most in this movie was the soundtrack, though. There was a lot of care in its production, and it was clearly made to be gentle and almost imperceptible, with glitch-like repetitions here and there, as if it means to put the viewers in the shoes of the deaf heroine. It certainly did its job well.
3. Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu!
First anime from KyoAni I’ve ever watched, aside from the Inuyasha movies. Easily one of their funniest series, if not the actual funniest. It has a very special place in my heart. I dropped Amagi Brilliant Park on the first episode, but I’d cry internally every time I saw Bonta-kun in it. The nostalgia is strong, kids.
It’s got excellent animation for the year it was made, and I dare say it’s more decently animated than many current animes. The pacing is dynamic and the jokes vary from over-the-top to smart and witty in a smooth way. I also give this one kudos for not relying nearly as much on fanservice as more recent titles.
For the people who didn’t watch the first Full Metal Panic, I suggest doing so before trying this one out. Anyone who enjoys the two should also watch the second season, Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid, which comes right after Fumoffu and was also animated by KyoAni.
4. Clannad
This one I deem as the best out of KyoAni’s most notorious classics. I also recommend the other titles related to this one, such as Clannad: Another Story.
Much like Hyouka, it’s a masterpiece in every aspect. It has a very non-cliché and unconveninent plot that deals with delicate themes in a sensible way and tears your heart apart at the same time. Frankly exemplary to the drama genre and exceptional as a visual novel adaptation.
5. Free!
The franchise became lackluster after the first director left, but the first two seasons were fun enough in their own right. Unlike most novel-to-anime adaptations, Free! started with original content through creating a future for the main story, which was turned into the not-so-distant past in the anime. This is unusual enough, but it worked out well as the anime maintained itself as loyal as possible to the first book and never went off the rails with the plot. The main characters’ personalities did suffer many alterations, yet it’s obvious that they meant to make the two more charismatic and likeable. As far as fan responses went, it worked.
I find very interesting that the creators were aware the story took itself too seriously at times, and they made this clear by compensating the heavy melancholy with heavy comedy. They also compensated the overdramatic atmosphere of the first season by picking up the pace and getting a little more serious in the second season. Everything was intentional and designed to be a hit amongst women, which I think had served the purpose until the first movie came out.
To be honest, I’m not fond of the exaggerated fanservice, but it gets easy to ignore it after a while if you only pay attention to the storyline. I don’t consider myself a fan of Free!, and I actually took very long to start liking it. I only did get into it at the last scene of episode 8, back when the first season was still airing. It was only by this time that I could see the true value of the series, so I recommend anyone who tries it out to go at least that far with it. I know it might be a lot of work, but in my honest opinion, it’s worth the trouble.
I deem the High Speed! novel awe-inspiring because of its nostalgic tone and the awfully realistic depiction of childhood crises. The most serious situations of it are a little out of reality, but the rest is absurdly relatable in levels that I myself don’t know how to put into words. Yet I also appreciate Free! for its strong tone of encouragement. It feels like the creators are trying to cheer up the viewers.
6. Kyoukai no Kanata
It starts becoming a mess from episode 4 onward, yet the beginning was quite promising. This one relies heavily on fanservice, often makes use of nonsensical tropes for the sake of comedy and sometimes goes overboard with the jokes. However, it doesn’t fail to deliver emotional value and the action is pretty neat. Anyone who hasn’t read the novel will definitely be able to enjoy it as a standalone.
I don’t think I need to mention it, but the animation is stellar. I in particular love the blurry movement effects of when the characters draw their weapons and the geometrical spectrums in the colorful power barriers. I also recommend the OVA, as well as the second movie I’ll be Here, although the latter is 100% original content. It was actually cute and fun to watch. The first movie is merely one huge recap.
7. Hibike! Euphonium
Truly dazzling take on slice-of-life. It’s healing and heartrending at the same time. The way that characters are portrayed allows the viewers to feel their passion and dedication without it occasionally feeling unrealistic. Everyone has their own problems, but none of them are taken out of proportion. Miscommunication happens, just not in a frustrating shoujo manga way.
The soundtrack and scenery are breathtaking, yet the forte of the animation in this one was the huge amount of detail put into the eyes and hair. Everyone’s hairdos are remarkably glossy without ever looking weird, and I especially like how their eyes all glinter in different colors.
The author published another volume of the novel after the anime, saying it had inspired her to write more, and it’s no wonder. I also recommend season two and the OVA. The first two movies are just recaps and the third was to me a disappointment, so I leave those to people’s own discretion.
8. Tamako Market
Rather odd but nice story. It blends iyashikei elements with a peculiar plot and actually manages to do that in a cute way. All of the characters are likeable and the visuals do a good job in transmitting what they have to transmit in a very relaxing manner.
This show caught me off-guard by how unproblematic it was. It has trans, gay and dark-skinned characters, but none of them is ever used for fanservice or jokes and their respective circumstances are portrayed as 100% normal, which is sadly still rare in anime even nowadays. The romance is pretty not-dramatic and filled to the brim with fluff, and I very much like that the main guy treats his female love rival as a serious threat.
I recommend the specials and the movie as well. Especially the movie, which is basically the same as direct sugar injestion and gave me diabetes.
9. Munto
Also has a special place in my heart. Cheesy but good, actually. I’d be lying if I said there aren’t some surprises in it, though, but I’ll refrain from giving too much info on the story itself.
It was firstly an OVA, but then got adapted into three movies. The animation was done finely enough, but there’s a drastic change in style from the first to the second half, though I myself didn’t really mind it. The characters are all well-stablished and the plot is consistent. There’s a present quality of feminist shades in it and the relationships are very endearing.
10. Nichijou
Not really one of my favorites but certainly one that I recommend for people who are in need of a laugh. It’s got some pretty creative and iconic humor. Its imaginative retakes on routinely affairs manage to transform the most trivial real-life situations into Oscar-worthy wit. It also gets nonsensical every so often, but this fits within the show’s own narrative.
It has a very unique animation that sometimes mixes different styles of art, which only makes every scene a hundred times funnier for being so soft and adorable. It varies from hyperrealistic to surrealistic at the speed of light and sometimes even becomes abstract as hell. It’s full of notes on Japanese culture, not only about daily life but also about media, which adds up to the fun.
#kyoani#kyoto animation#hyouka#free!#koe no katachi#full metal panic#nichijou#hibike euphonium#tamako market#clannad#kyoukai no kanata#munto#i could totally do more of these!

“You’re not Russian, you’re just American with some Russian blood”- my Israeli PS professor (who is neither Russian nor American nor knows anything about me)
Long post ahead: read it if you’d like but mostly just hoping there’s someone else who can relate to the feelings I’m about to express. So here goes:
Had an unbelievably shitty day today.
I’m in this one political science class. It always ends up somehow ruining my mood. It’s the one with the shitty German men who confronted me in a group after class accusing me of being uncritical towards the Soviet Union, being an antisemite (lol these aryan guys were calling me an antisemite. Like they’re confirmed non-Jewish) and being a dumbass for not idk sucking Gorbachev’s dick personally would be the next leap there. Idk if I posted that here, but it’s necessary context.
Anyways today we were talking about Russia’s motive in x place and just jumping around to every unrelated topic about something about Russia because our class always gets sidetracked and never finishes the lesson we were supposed to do. And of course the Europeans were being pieces of shit.
And the prof said something like “I wish we had Russians in the class to offer maybe a Russian perspective too... like gosh that would be nice. Do we have any Russians?” And I sort of tentatively raised my hand half way because I’m half Russian and when she was looking around the room and didn’t see me, I said “I’m half Russian and this is actually something I heard and talked a lot about growing up, I could take a try at it”
“You’re not Russian, you’re just American with a little Russian blood” she said, dismissing me entirely as the class laughed like it was the funniest thing they’ve ever heard. I now realize what it means when people say they feel stung. I was paralyzed by those words and I don’t really know why. What makes it hurt more is that starting two seconds later she called on a series of five German douchebags to try and explain Russia’s motives and says “huh that’s an interesting idea” after each of them say something painfully obviously wrong. And I felt frozen.
If given the chance to unfreeze myself, I wish I said what I was feeling but didn’t have words for: “Hey. That’s not true. Russian was the language I said my first words in. It’s the language of my childhood and my soul. It connected me to something I felt distant from during the school day. I taught myself to read this language as soon as my mom taught me the alphabet as a little kid. I went to Russian school on the weekends when I was young. I worked hard to keep up this language even though I went through shit from my peers for it. I was the only speaker of this language I knew that was my age after the age of 10. The only other time I’d hear it was when my mom criticized me, wanted to manipulate me (because I told her she sounded sweeter in Russian so she used that to her advantage in making my life hell) bc my brother stopped speaking at a young age.
The only reason I have this connection is because I’ve never worked harder for anything else in my life. I took years of Russian lit courses (in Russian) at the local uni when I was in high school. Until then I’d only done math and reading (just for fun not for school) in Russian. Having learning and sight disabilities and being expected to keep up with both college and high school class and workloads was overwhelming at times. Like I was 14, this wasn’t an “easy A” as my friends joked, it was a college level literature course. But I loved it like nothing else. It was an oasis of peace during my adolesence just getting to hear my dearest language spoken by both native speakers and those who adopted it just because of their love for it. It was the first time I realized that this aspect of me isn’t shameful. Plus, the college kids treated me like I was such a hotshot because I grew up speaking the language and I was like a tiny 14 year old in a russia Olympic jacket and a bowl cut so that made my life. Just getting to be around places where for once, I understood everything that was being said in the exact emotion it was intended, having my cultural touchstones be the norm and that I got to interact with instantly more people in this language was really special.
Maybe what pissed me off so much is not only that I think it’s wrong, but that I think she’s right. My experience is different from a Russian experience, which is why I never claimed to be Russian even when I was the most Russian person in that classroom. My experience of being Russian (Jewish) (Italian)American is as much a story of love and connection as it is of shame and disconnection. It is the story of pain feeling inadequate to everyone, always. When I was six, kids were already refusing to play with me because their parents told them I was a spy or an enemy (which wtf who parents their kid like that) just because I talked about visiting my family in the summer (which is a normal thing to do) and gd forbid they live in RUSSIA. The bullshit hasn’t stopped since. My entire childhood, my mom was vigilant about who I was allowed to tell about being Russian because of it. I thought Russian a really important language to people here. I thought they cared about us. I thought someone else who didn’t have to care about us, fucking cared about us Russian Jews. How can a fellow Jew, an academic, not understand the inherent pluralism of Jewish and Russian experiences when she’s lived in this country surrounded by Russian Jews her whole life?
And I get it. I’m not technically Russian. I don’t have a Russian passport. I didn’t grow up in Russia and that still means there’s always someone more qualified to answer certain questions. But I didn’t think it was going to be some goyische fucking German. Cuz at least I saw saturated with these types of discussions about Russian politics, not being allowed to voice my opinion bc these are Russian jewish middle aged and older people lol kids don’t have valid opinions to them, but listening intently since infancy. I watched Russian news and tv shows (we didn’t have money for both English and Russian language tv so my mom chose the Russian tv channels) on the rare occasion I sat in front of the tv. I hung around Russian speakers more than English speakers (of my parent’s age and older) for most of my childhood until this year. And it’s not just the language, it’s the culture too. It’s the fact that no one around me shared these cultural touchstones growing up. and I didn’t share their American ones even though I grew up in the US.
But trips to Russia didn’t make me feel understood in the ways I craved it would. My family always commented on how amazingly I spoke Russian «просто без акцента!» (without an accent) *insert kisses from relatives you don’t even know who they are but they know everything about you* so I was always kind of aware that I couldn’t seamlessly fit in there either. Especially when in my mom’s small town, children who played with me had literally never seen someone with my color of skin and told me I looked “dirty” which catalyzed my whole washing my hands till my arms got dry and peeled and being frightened that I wasn’t getting “cleaner” and then getting diagnosed with my second subset of OCD at the age of seven. I had so many fond memories of my mom’s hometown. So much nostalgia. But I also have memories which pain me, like the many times I was chased out of stores or once in a doctor’s office because the person assumed I was Roma because of my appearance (like I said, small town). Things got even worse when the school I went to summer camp/summer classes in my mom’s hometown found out I was JEWISH. Oof. My mom convinced me that I was betraying my culture and my ancestors and alienating myself from my grandmother when I came out to her at 11, when I cut my hair after three years of her daily verbal harassment in my mother tongue (she knew it hurts more like that). She said if I wanted to continue “on this path” I would lose all connection to Russia.... “and you don’t want that, do you?” Suffice it to say, I got the message pretty young that I don’t belong in Russia either.
My whole life I’ve been translating half of my world to the other half of my world. And within each of these worlds I must translate my contexts many fold times more. (My Babushka still doesn’t know why I’m putting “poison” in my body for what she sees as a character flaw because she just doesn’t have the context for what ADHD is and the way I was taught to translate it in Russian is «дефицит внимание» or “deficit of attention/carefulness” which as far as she’s concerned is just an American invention for what could really be solved if I just sat more still.) And this has made my world so much richer to be lucky enough to have two native languages in which I learned how to express myself and gave me two whole realms through which to intimately understand the world and all of its nuances. You gain a family when you speak a language. It’s unlike anything else! It was even more special that I got to add Arabic at 12 and now Hebrew. I’m so lucky. But an inherent downside of being taught world views that conflict with each other in some very fundamental ways is really hard when you’re autistic and have ADHD because you have to juggle not just one set of social cues and norms, but two (or more, shout out to the multilinguals from childhood). It’s hard but it’s important and I’m so lucky that this was my birthright. I just wish people would take two seconds to try and understand. Or at least think about if something they said might make someone else feel like this, especially if they’re jewish. Like to ya it’s not a new thing to be torn in many directions. Even here where it’s the dominant culture, I expected her as someone who lives here and is an academic, she’d be better.

roommate!chan
requests: open
chan x reader
~ - fluff
word count: 1.8k
masterlist
you and chan had been friends basically since you were babies
your parents were friends way before either of you were born, so naturally you two had many play dates together
once middle school rolled around, you still hung out some but not nearly as much as you did when you were younger
each of you started to develop your own personalities and form your own friend groups
by the time high school approached, you barely spoke to each other
you were busy focusing on your schoolwork and he was busy focusing on his social life
there’s nothing wrong with that, you just were trying your hardest to get into one of the best universities in the country so you didn’t have much time for a social life
there were a few times when chan would come sit with you in the library during lunch
you preferred to eat there because it was quieter and you could focus on your work
it was very rare that he’d sit with you, though
typically only when he came in alone to print a paper
you hated when he came in with his friends
they would be so loud, disturbing everyone in the room
you would pull out your headphones to hopefully blast out the noise with music
looking up at the group of boys you’d notice chan looking at you
he’d give you a soft smile, as if to say sorry for his friends
that was basically the extent of your interactions throughout high school
of course there were the combined family dinners your parents forced you both to attend, but you didn’t really talk much
in all honesty, you didn’t have much in common that you knew of
you didn’t talk enough to know if you had anything in common
you didn’t mind sitting across from him at the table though
even if you didn’t have anything to talk about, his face wasn’t that bad to look at
however, you felt weird thinking of him like that
you’d literally known each other since you were babies
so you just kept those feelings to yourself
soon enough graduation came and everyone had to announce where they were going to university
you didn’t even have to wait to find out what school chan was going to because your parents rushed into your bedroom one night excited to tell you that you two would be attending the same university
both your parents and his kind of got out of hand with the whole idea of their kids going to the same school
they planned a joint graduation party for you two
it was held in chan’s backyard and the whole place was decked out in the colors of your university
of course your entire family came and a few of your close friends
but the majority of the guests were chan’s friends
which basically meant the whole school was there
once the party was over and you were helping clean up, your parents told you and chan that they found a perfect apartment near your university that they’d already decided to rent for you both to live in
“what? i already told one of my friends that i’d look for an apartment with him!” chan said
it almost made you feel kind of bad
you didn’t want him to have to feel like he had to live with you
you weren’t dumb, college was where boys brought girls back to their apartments and you didn’t want to get in the way of that
people would probably think you’re dating or something if they knew you were living together
“yeah, i was just planning on getting a place for myself so..” you said
but both of your parents refused to accept either of your pleas
and within the next two months, you were moved in together
the place was nice
there was a large entry room with your and chan’s bedrooms on either side
this led into the living room which was attached to the kitchen
having chan as a roommate was…
interesting
at first it was kind of awkward because you hadn’t really spoken since middle school
it took a little while but eventually you started reminiscing about stories from when you were younger together and started to get somewhat close again
not close enough to tell each other everything, though
one night you couldn’t sleep so you went into the kitchen and sat on one of the bar stools, spooning ice cream into your mouth
you heard the front door slam shut, causing you to jump
chan walked into the kitchen and grabbed himself a water, about to exit and make his way to his room
“hey” you said
he stopped and turned around, leaning up against the wall, “hey. what are you doing still up? don’t you have an early class tomorrow?”
“couldn’t sleep” you responded
he hummed in response and nodded his head
just as he was about to turn to leave you asked, “where were you? it’s pretty late”
you didn’t want to seem nosy
you were just genuinely curious
he’d been staying out pretty late these past few nights and his mom made you promise to look out for him
“i was on a date” he said, kind of awkwardly, fiddling with this water bottle
“oh” you said
you know your voice sounded like you were disappointed
it’s not that you were upset that he went on a date
you were happy for him
but something deep down stung a little bit
“i hope it went well” you continued, quickly putting the ice cream back into the freezer and your spoon in the sink
you glided past him and made your way to your room
before you shut your door, you chimed out a “goodnight” then tried to go to sleep yet again
chan was left standing in the kitchen, wondering what just happened
he sighed and made his way to his room, as well
why did you hurry to your room?
why were you so confusing?
he flopped down on his bed
he wondered what had happened
it’s not like you didn’t get along
maybe sometimes people just drift apart
like how you did in high school
that’s what made living together so awkward
of course you shared stories of your childhood and a few tales from middle school, but you didn’t really know about each other’s personal lives
sometimes he’d hear you laughing in your room at night
and as much as he’d like to deny it, he got jealous??
he didn’t know why though
who could be making you laugh so hard?
he used to make you laugh like that
he ran his hands through his hair, trying to get rid of his thoughts and got ready for bed
the days following, you couldn’t help but see chan differently
you’d catch yourself watching him as he made his breakfast
taking peeks at him doing his homework at the dining table
as much as you wanted to deny it, you think your school girl crush from waaay long ago was coming back
living with him showed you a different side of him
like how he would get some of your favorite snacks when he would take a quick trip to the store
and sometimes if you fell asleep on the couch while up late studying, you’d wake up with a blanket over you
small things like that which made you look at him differently than you did before
but there’s no way you’d ever tell him that
he’s a hot shot with all the girls, he wouldn’t bat an eye at you
his childhood best friend and now roommate
one night a few weeks later, you knew chan would be out on a date with the same person
(you assumed they were his significant other, they were hanging out all the time)
you decided to go out to get some take out to eat away your feelings for him
you were walking into the apartment, fumbling with your keys and of course the huge bag of food that was just about to fall out of your arms
before the bag fell, you felt someone grab it from you
you looked up to see chan standing with a smile on his face
flustered you said, “oh hey, i uh..i thought you had a date tonight?”
he laughed and made his way to the kitchen to set down the take out
“yeah, i did, but i don’t think things are going to work out”
“oh,” you said. “i’m sorry”
there was a slightly awkward silence for a moment
you looked down at your shoes not knowing exactly what to say
“i have a bunch of food, if you want to join me. i definitely got more than i can eat by myself” you said to him whilst messing with the top of the bag
about an hour later, you two were sitting at the dining room table laughing about how you were as kids and eating happily
your laughter died down and at that point you were just picking at your food, already full
“you know i used to have the hugest crush on you” chan said out of the blue
your head shot up, looking at him spinning his chopsticks in his hand
you didn’t know what to say, so you just stayed silent
waiting for him to continue
“maybe that’s why i kind of ran away from you, i guess. i was nervous” he chuckled slightly
you gave him a confused look
why would he be nervous of you?
“hey, don’t give me that look! you were so focused on school and i just thought you were so intelligent and amazing..i was intimidated”
you were shocked, “intimidated? by me?? that’s the funniest thing i’ve heard in a while”
he laughed, “seriously, though, i really did like you”
there was a moment of silence before you said, “did?”
“huh?” he responded
you looked back down at your food, his gaze making you nervous
“you said that you did like me..so..not anymore?”
the was another moment of silence
“honestly…i don’t think i ever stopped” he said
you could feel your face heating up
“really?” you asked, looking up at him
“yeah, i was just going out with that person to distract me from having to live with you, i think. it’s hard walking around here, always seeing you and you not knowing how i feel”
your face began to heat up even more
“well,” you said. “can this be considered our first date then?”
chan laughed, “of course, but only if you let me take you out for a second date”
“i think there will be plenty more” you said

Hullo, saw your views on Rose, and I do agree a lot. I was wondering what you thought of the other companions, like Martha, Donna, the Ponds, River, etc?
I am glad you liked my thoughts. I’m sorry for keeping you waiting, but this ask prompted, wait for it, 2.5 thousand words on my love and appreciation for each of these darlings, because I do love them all.
Under the cut we go!!!!
Martha- Martha Jones walked away from all of time and spacebecause she wouldn’t do it with someone who did not respect her (no offense to10 but she deserved better than you) and that ladies and gentlemen is thedefinition of a strong female character. Even from her first episode I lovedMartha balancing doctor training with her incredibly dysfunctional family andinstead of taking a moment to break down and scream (which is what many of uswould do) she just gets on with it, a little sarcasm and eye rolling sure but she doesn’t let it put her down and doesn’t get bogged down in her stressful life. There’s also how she is a badass withoutneeding to be physically violent or use weapons. In fact I don’t remember a lotof scenes where she does use weapons (thought it’s been a while). She walksacross the Earth using nothing but her bravery and wits, she finishedShakespeare’s spell to the witches on the spot even when the Doctor couldn’t doit (also, Expelliamus, you babe, Martha), ended Joan Redfern with her knowledgeof the bones of the hand (which is some pretty complex information she whippedout off the top of her pretty little head), and talked down to the Daleks(which yes used a weapon but it was a weapon given to her). Whether she wasbluffing or not in that instance, that took some serious guts and homegirl didnot break a sweat while doing it. A small but beautiful moment for her is inher first episode where she says “How many people want to go to the moon? Andhere we are!”. She knows how scary the whole thing is but at the same time shesees the absolute beauty and knows how unique an opportunity it is, and that’sa beautiful thing for her.
Donna- Oh Donna Donna Donna. If there was ever a characterwho was more fitting of the ‘deserved better’ label, it’s her! I don’t think itis physically possible for someone to dislike Donna. Let’s get the obviouspoint out of the way first; best lines ever. I mean between “oi watch itspaceman” and “don’t get clever in Latin” she had some of the funniest lines onthis show. Now that that is out of the way, can we appreciate the hope she has?She sticks out with the belief she will see the Doctor again after the Runaway Bride, and I feel likeher changing her mind humanised her a lot. She said she didn’t want to butthen, things changed, because people change. I liked her taking matters intoher own hands re: Adipose and investigating thinking she could run into theDoctor there. Even from there, she is on equal footing with him. Now we move onto her compassion which is so lovely, especially towards other women, like MissEvangelista (and I love their relationship because I feel like Donna was comingfrom a place of understanding with her, knowing how it feels to beunderestimated, and making sure she thanked her and noticed her even if no oneelse did), Evelina, Jenny whom she immediately bonds with even when 10 isprickly towards her. She just wants to make friends with all the people shemeets and I think that’s an amazing character trait. Not to mention how she demands to be treated as an equal, no matter if it’s a UNIT soldier (”I’ll have a salute”) or an alien ( “Every bit as important as Time Lord, thank you very much”). Her growth was amazing. She didn’t acquire a lot of new skills, just the confidence to utilise the onesshe had! I am still so bitter and upset about her ending because she did notdeserve to have all her amazing adventures and development that came with thatstripped away from her.
Amy- Amy is “my first bb girl” in that s6 of Doctor Who wasthe first one I watched, and the first fandom I was in and Amy was my firstfavourite female character, so I am very protective of her. When we first meether adult self, Amy is desperate to shed the “Amelia” part of her, kick out thechildhood dreams, but even in season 5 we still see a sort of childlikeexcitement because she has not suppressed her inner child and that isbeautiful. She also has a lot of insecurities in her arc, shown in herrelationship with Rory-not in a “I worry that he’s too good for me” way but ina “I don’t know if I am ready for this level of commitment” way-which 1. imomade for a very relateable character and 2. Gave way for a whole level ofcharacter development, because by around the end of series 5/start of series 6she was wholly comfortable in that relationship. But even then she can’t sitstill as it were, she says to the Doctor that she can’t keep a job and, while Ido acknowledge is in part to the fact she is waiting for him to come back, sheis also finding herself, which right now, I relate to massively as a youngwoman. She doesn’t keep a job because she doesn’t know what she wants. Shemodels, she writes, she makes perfumes, she can’t sit still. Amy’s story islargely about growing up and learning to stand on her own two feet, and that iswhy it culminates in her choosing to go back in time with Rory. Now this is abit of my own personal thinking here, but to me Rory represents “normality”, anadventure free, dull life while the Doctor represented everything else. Thiswas her growing up and saying she was choosing normality, her “not a littlegirl anymore” moment. She doesn’t outgrow her flaws, she’s still very impulsivein season 7 but she learns to deal with them maturely. I imagine a lot of hertroubles come from the neglect she endured as a child and I curse Moffat fornot allowing her to deal with her trauma in a healthier way. But anyways, Ithought her growing into her own and maturing was lovely to watch.
River Song- Ah River, or as I like to call her “who my 13-year-oldself aspired to be”. She’s just, so beautifully complex. I think what I lovemost about her is she lives her life on her own terms. She takes a lot of risksbut she…. well I wouldn’t say doesn’t care but she certainly seems to thinkthey’re worth it. And she lived her life totally on her terms, even when shewas in jail! She just casually breaks out and in as she pleases, just waltzingaround like a babe! She also has so much confidence it’s inspiring. She’sclever and she knows it. She has most people wrapped around her finger, evenfrom her first expedition in the library we can see she is the (unofficial)leader. I don’t know if I would call her fearless, but she rarely showed fear.Vashta Nerada? Weeping Angels? She has got this. Plus, homegirl graffitied theoldest cliff face in universe like can you get any more iconic? She is alsogorgeous and she knows it. She has a great body and flaunts it because it makesher feel good and that’s a good lesson we ca all take away from her. I thinkthere is also a hugely tragic side to River. Every character on this show hadfamily issues; Rose lost her dad, Martha’s parents split, Amy was neglectedetc. and then there is River, who was kidnapped, tortured and brainwashed. Andyet she kept on fighting and as a child managed to fight her way out of anastronaut suit and braved the streets of 1960s New York as a child. And that’sjust the tip of it. I saw a post once that in the s6 premiere, when she isalone talking to Rory, in that moment, she isn’t just someone talking to a guyshe just met, she is a little girl running to her daddy and telling her she’s scaredand wants her parents, and it hurts god damn it, it hurts. Underneath thebravado, the flirting, the teasing, she’s scared. I am not amazed that she cameout of it a good person, I am amazed she came out of it sane. But she is such agood person. She managed to overcome her brainwashing and kill the person sheloves most, and then sacrifices herself in the library. One of my favouriteRiver moments is her moment with Donna when Donna asks “How come I’m not in thefuture” and River’s face (huge props to Alex here) just falls so much and thereis so much empathy in that scene. I also think her determination to rebuild herrelationship with her parents is so beautifully inspiring and we were cheatedout of scenes. I also think her past adds to her relationship with the Doctorsince he was likely the only person outside of her parents to care for herwhich is why she latched on to him (not saying that avoiding killing him was atall right, it was definitely wrong sorry bby girl, but it is kind ofunderstandable).
Clara- Oh Clara my Clara. If you couldn’t tell by my bio, Iam a massive Clara Oswald fan, and she is currently in a three way tie forFavourite Fictional Character Out Of Anything Ever (tied with Emma Swan andKillian Jones from Once Upon A Time). Where do I even start with her? Even fromher first episodes, confidence oozes out of her every pore and it is earned. From Oswin (who I fell in love with in 2 seconds flat) and her “total screaminggenius” to modern day Clara and “Clara Oswald for the win” she just knows howamazing she is and I totally love it. It’s not conceited arrogance, not “I ambetter than you” but “I am awesome and I know I am”. Now let’s move on to asimilar topic, baby girl is very smart as heck, even without the computerknowledge uploaded into her via Great Intelligence. She noticed the littledetails “a chimney that doesn’t blow smoke”, she thought on her feet “I’m theDoctor”/ “Your daughter, Skaldak”, she keeps pushing Bonnie and manages to stayequal with her by using her wits (sidenote, can we give all the awards to Jennain that episode because good lord), her whole time in Flatline (which isprobably my favourite Clara episode ever), with the clockwork robots she keptthem talking, risking her own life in the process because she knew how to.Also, right from the word go she is making it clear with the Doctor that she ishis equal and that she is the one in charge here, right from “come backtomorrow” and “see you next Wednesday”. This continues later in her arc “you’reone of my hobbies”. One of my favourite lines of hers is “I’m not a bargainbased stand in for someone else, I’m not going to compete with a ghost” and itjust sticks with me because she is there asserting her authority on the TARDIS,prepared to walk away right now if he does not respect her for who she is, andit is marvellous to watch. And then this comes back in 12’s run where she goesoff on him for abandoning her and I feel like he needed her to ground him andmake him more human. She is not afraid to call the Doctor out on his shit, whether it’s something big like in Kill The Moon or something relating to herdirectly, “speak for me again and I’ll detatch something from you”. Now let’smove onto another, beautiful topic, Clara and kids! We see this in the Bells ofSaint John how she gave up her plans to travel to look after Angie and Artieand then again in the next episode she comforts and all but adopts Merry Gallel, and her with young!Doctor, soothing his fears. It’s a little topic but it’s sobeautiful. She is also, for a lack of a better word, beautifully badass! Shehas stared down Cybermen, Daleks, Missy, all the Doctor’s greatest enemies, andnot blinked. That is how badass she is. She is also incredibly brave, rightfrom the start she volunteers to go into the Ice Warrior, she jumps into theDoctor’s timestream, she sacrifices herself for Rigsy. She’s a beautiful exampleof how bravery and fearlessness are not the same thing. Her dying words are “letme be brave”, which is a beautiful moment for her. There is also something somagical about her, so fairytale, the excited traveller. Her first request is tosee “something awesome”. She doesn’t care, she just wants to be impressed. She practicallydances when she arrives somewhere new. Underneath her no-nonsense “bossy controlfreak” exterior, there’s an excited young woman getting to travel. She ishugely flawed but she is aware of it, which I find amazing. She says in HellBent “I’d say I’m sorry but I’d do it again”. She is reckless and a littleselfish, and she knows it. Ultimately, it is what kills her, but it still makesfor a wholly unique and beautiful character.
Bill Potts- Ah my precious Bill. I think the quote either Moffator Pearl gave “she’s got her feet on the ground and her heart in the stars” (orsomething) is so perfectly her. She is just so open and in my opinion, we needcharacters like that, who smile through rainstorms. I mean, she wanted to go tothe future because she wanted to see if it was happy, which is kind of tragicbut also pretty beautiful when you think about it. I think the fact that sheshowed up at lectures even though she wasn’t a student was so great. All shehad was a love of learning even if she wouldn’t do anything with it, and yes, anatural curiosity about the Doctor himself. The Doctor says that when she doesn’tknow something, she smiles, which is another lovely detail on her character andagain shows her curiosity and just how much of a sunshine she is. There’s nofrustration in not knowing, it’s a new chance for her to learn. Her reactionsto everything around her are so amazingly realistic, calling the Victorianorphans “cute as”. I think her question to the Doctor in her first episode, “Doyou know any sci-fi?”, shows a lot about how she is the dreamer, the one whothinks up impossible scenarios and answers, she dares to think outside the box.Bill has such a strong mind that even being a cyberman could not stop her fromcaring and fighting back. Her teasing the Doctor is absolutely adorable and isreally her way of establishing her own authority on the TARDIS, unlike Claraand Martha, she doesn’t do anything where she demands his respect, she gentlyeases it out of him with her quirky teasing (“Time Lord, sounds posh”), notsaying one way is better than the other, just that it’s a cute and unique wayof her building an equal relationship with him. I think Bill is definitely oneof those characters we so desperately need more of in TV, little rays ofsunshine who want to make everyone else’s days brighter, who want to pushforward and achieve and try because why not, even if it won’t lead them anywhere, who wants to see if the world will still be a happier place tomorrow. And Ilove her for it.

Get to know me.
I was tagged by @donnaduck87 I like to know the people around me, and I’m always super curious, so here’s my contribution to involve others and so you can “get to know me”.
Are you named after anyone? No. But I was almost named Billy-Jean :S
When was the last time you cried? I very rarely cry. I really can’t remember.
Do you have kids? Yes. I have two, one of the human kind and one of the fur kind.
If you were another person, would you be a friend of yourself? I’m very a keep-to-myself person, but I think I would be. I find closed people have more stories to tell.
Do you use sarcasm a lot? More than anything.
What’s the first thing you notice about people? The way they talk, the way they move. How confident they are. I catch moods pretty quick, and what they are like even through messages. Looks-wise, comes second for me. I like people that can keep your eyes, that for me is a winner. (I’m not talking all out staring, but eye contact while talking is everything to me. I feel like I’m staring into a soul.)
What is your eye color? Green
Scary movie or happy endings? Soul-crushing endings all the way. And horror/scary/shitmypants movies all the way.
Favorite smells? Laundry. Cats heads. Biscuits when they are cooking.
What’s the furthest you’ve ever been from home? Florida.
Do you have any special talents? Cursing awfully. Drawing people into fictional worlds. Convincing people that that last drink was a really good idea.
Where were you born? Norfolk.
What are your hobbies? Reading, writing. That’s probably about it.
Do you have any pets? A German Shepherd girl called Charlie, or Chazza for short, or little cunt when she eats my shoes.
Do you have any siblings? Yes, a brother.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I’d really like to be a dinosaur, a t-rex. OR I’d like to be a phoenix. Be cool if I grew up into a goddess too, not gonna lie.
Who was your first best friend? It was probably a dog. But my first best friend was a girl called Sam. My cousins have always been my besties too.
How tall are you? 5′7
Funniest moment throughout School? School was just a pain in the ass. We should only have to go to school when we are older and actually want to do it.
How many countries have you visited? A lot of Europe, I’m in a hurry so can’t think about this right now.

I don't even know what dragon age is but now I'm curious...
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
OKAY, SO, PREPARE FOR “MORE THAN YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT AMUSE’S FAVORITE THING IN THE WORLD.”
The Dragon Age franchise is a series of video games set in a dark fantasy world called “Thedas.” Thedas is shorthand for “THE Dragon Age Setting,” because sometimes creators get tired while naming things. You play a different character in each of the three games currently available (there’s talk of a fourth but I’m not getting my hopes up). The trilogy spans over roughly fifteen years of in-game time and trust me, they are interesting times.
Dragon Age: Origins
The original idea behind this game was “lets try and make a classic tabletop RPG (a la Dungeons & Dragons) but, you know, in cinematic video game form.” It was way more popular than anyone expected and basically set the tone (and the bar) for all Bioware games to follow.
In Origins you play The Warden, an unvoiced protagonist of the race, gender, and class combo of your choosing. You are conscripted by a once-prominent military order called the Grey Wardens and sent off to fight Darkspawn (think like a combo between fantasy orc and revenant) and end the Blight (think plague of locusts, only Darkspawn instead of locusts). Then politics get involved and what starts as a bad situation snowballs till it could quite literally be the end of the world… unless you fix it!
Your companions on this quest include:
Alistair - (human, male, warrior) very sweet, occasionally sarcastic fellow member of the Grey Wardens. He has seniority over you in the order and is, by all accounts, a more experienced fighter than you, but he still chooses to follow you instead of lead. If you play a female character, you can romance him.
Morrigan - (human, female, mage) very sarcastic, rarely sweet swamp witch who spent more of her childhood as an animal than a human (it shows). The most introverted person ever to be dragged on an epic quest. If you play a male character, you can romance her.
Dog - (Mabari war hound) depending on your choices in the game, you can have a dog. Your dog is roughly the equivalent of a pit bull crossed with a tiger. The dogs in the Dragon Age franchise are much beloved, and for good reason.
Leliana - (human, female, rogue) very sweet, occasionally self-righteous member of the local religious order (aka “The Chantry”). She left behind a dark and somewhat twisted backstory to devote herself to good deeds and serving her fellow man. Regardless of your chosen gender, you can romance her.
Sten - (kossith, male, warrior) very blunt, occasionally sweet front line troop for the Thedosian equivalent of the bastard child of Communism with a particularly restrictive caste system. If possible, take him and Morrigan with you at the same time for some particularly hilarious banter.
Wynne - (human, female, mage) very pragmatic, occasionally nosy member of the local mage’s guild - where membership is nowhere near optional and you can be put to death and/or lobotomized if someone in charge thinks they’re justified… I can’t be unbiased in my description of the conflict, so suffice to say that Wynne is a cool old lady, think Minerva McGonagall with sprinkles of Molly Weasley.
Zevran - (elvhen, male, rogue) very flirty, occasionally blunt assassin sent to kill you. He will join you if given half a chance. He’s basically Puss in Boots from Shrek 2, with a deeper backstory and it’s exactly as amazing as it sounds. Regardless of your chosen gender, you can romance him.
Oghren - (dwarf, male, warrior) very drunk, occasionally coherent sad bastard. One of your main quests involves his wife and, well, he’s got reason to be sad.
Shale - (golem, genderless [debatable], warrior) very snarky, occasionally vulnerable giant rock monster available via DLC. Shale is easily one of the funniest companions, what with all of their comments on ‘the squishies.’
Spoiler Companion - well, that would be telling, wouldn’t it?
Dragon Age 2
This game was conceived and hastily put together in the wake of DA:O’s huge success and the speed shows. There are set pieces and fights that get reused, but ultimately I don’t think that matters. Yes, this story is set between two epic adventures, and it tells a smaller, arguably more intimate, story. Also, take everything you see and hear with a grain of salt because the framing device for the game is that it’s a story being told by one of your DA2 companions to a cross between a holy templar and a Homeland Security Director.
In DA2 you play as Hawke, a fully voiced protagonist of the gender and class of your choosing. There’s a slight overlap in timelines here as you play a member of a family fleeing the Blight (the disaster of the first game) and escaping to a neighboring city-state as a refugee. The game follows Hawke across the span of a decade, during which they rise to prominence within the city of Kirkwall. You have three main personalities you can choose from that, after a certain point, ‘lock in’ what kind of spontaneous side comments you can make. Your options are: aggressive, sarcastic, and diplomatic. Three guesses which one I always choose and the first two don’t count.
Your companions in these adventures are:
Aveline - (human, female, warrior) very honorable, somewhat sarcastic local police equivalent. She sees that you are doing good, even if it’s outside the system, and fights with you. She’s steadfast, loyal, and abominably bad at flirting.
Varric - (dwarf, male, rogue) very snarky, very loyal local businessman who has a finger in literally every pie. He is the inspiration behind half of tumblr’s THAT FEEL WHEN YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH AN UNROMANCEABLE SIDE CHARACTER. He’s Thedas’s most famous novelist and writes the equivalent of fanfiction about his friends because the shit they get into is weird.
Anders - (human, male, mage) very bleeding heart, slightly possessed local mage freedom fighter and ex-member of the Grey Wardens (though you’re never really an ex-member). One of the more divisive figures in the DA fandom. Regardless of your chosen gender, you can romance him.
Isabella - (human, female, rogue) very flirty, somewhat aggressive pirate captain in need of a new boat. Would steal your bra out from under your shirt for kicks. Is not wearing pants and may not be wearing panties. Regardless of your chosen gender, you can romance her.
Fenris - (elvhen, male, warrior) very blunt, occasionally sarcastic escaped slave with a truly mountainous serving of PTSD regarding mages. One of the more divisive figures in the DA fandom. Regardless of your chosen gender, you can romance him.
Merrill - (elvhen, female, mage) very sweet, very sheltered ex-second in command of the local tribe of non-city (aka “Dalish”) elves. She is the living embodiment of “looks like a cinnamon roll, is actually a cinnamon roll, but could still totally kill you.” Regardless of your chosen gender, you can romance her.
Sebastian - (human, male, rogue) very honorable, very… okay, I’ll be honest, I never bought the DLC he’s in. He’s got a vaguely Scottish brogue and is a local prince-equivalent who needs help getting back on his throne. One of the more divisive figures in the DA fandom. If you play a female, you can romance him.
Then depending on if you’re a mage or a rogue/warrior, you will get a little sibling! If you choose to be a mage, your mage sibling dies. If you choose to be a non-mage, your non-mage sibling dies. Tragic backstories for everyone!
Bethany Hawke - (human, female, mage) very sweet, occasionally sarcastic little sister of the PC. I’ll be honest, I always play as a mage in DA2, so I’m not terribly familiar with her. She’s both kind and honorable.
OR
Carver Hawke - (human, male, warrior) very snarky, very blunt little brother of the PC. He’s the rudest asshole. I adore him.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
This was a major project for the Bioware team. They put a shitload of time and energy and effort into making it awesome. It shows. But still, fans felt that the end of the game didn’t give enough closure. The team listened, and thus the DLC was born - the DLC for this game is amazeballs.
In Inquisition you play The Inquisitor, a voiced protagonist of the race, gender, and class combo of your choosing. You are the only survivor of a cataclysmic event that tore the barrier between reality and The Fade (the dream world which is also arguably the wellspring for magic). On top of that, the event originated right where some Really Terribly Important peace talks were happening and now all the leaders of a bunch of factions are dead and you need to step up and lead the charge to Fix the Sky and Also a Bunch of Other Things.
Your companions in this epic quest are:
Cassandra - (human, female, warrior) very pragmatic, somewhat dogmatic member of an elite warrior order and also the literal right hand of the recently deceased equivalent of the pope. If you play as a male, you can romance her.
Varric - same dude from DA2. He’s still not romanceable.
Solas - (elvhen, male, mage) very serious, very determined ‘apostate’ (ie: not tied to the local mage’s guild) who wants to fix what the cataclysm broke. Think ‘sexy professor.’ One of the more divisive figures in the DA fandom. If you play as a female elf, you can romance him.
Sera - (elvhen, female, rogue) very blunt, very stubborn result of what would happen if you crossed Robin Hood with the Weasley twins. One of the more divisive figures in the DA fandom. If you play a female, you can romance her.
Vivienne - (human, female, mage) very sophisticated, somewhat sarcastic former advisor to the equivalent of the queen of France/Rome. The epitome of the steel hand in the velvet glove. Her aesthetic is #goals. One of the more divisive figures in the DA fandom.
The Iron Bull - (kossith, male, warrior) very observant, very bombastic spy sent by the Qun (the aforementioned Communism/caste system culture) to figure out what the hell is going on and can it be fixed. Regardless of gender or species, you can romance him.
Blackwall - (human, male, warrior) very beardy, pragmatic member of the Grey Wardens who usually does recruitment but whoa that catastrophe looks like it needs fixin’. Somewhat divisive in the fandom. If you play as a female, you can romance him.
Dorian - (human, male, mage) very snarky, very classy nobleman from the rough equivalent of the Roman empire. He wants to reform his country into something better but doesn’t quite know how yet, in the meantime he wants to do good. Somewhat divisive in the fandom. If you play as a male, you can romance him.
Cole - (spirit, male, rogue) very helpful, very naive spirit of Compassion that wandered out of the Fade and OMG so many people need help. He wants to experience humanity and also save it.
Your advisors as you try and clean up the political sphere are:
Leliana - same chick from Origins. She’s not romanceable this time around.
Cullen - (human, male, warrior) very sweet, very hard working general of the Inquisition. He’s actually popped up in all three games and his character arc is fascinating. As you can imagine, he’s a very divisive character in the fandom. If you play a female human or elf, you can romance him.
Josephine - (human, female, rogue[?]) very sweet, very smart diplomat of the Inquisition. If you met her at a bar, she’d be wearing a fantastically coordinated ensemble and then she’d hustle you at pool, but you would leave utterly charmed. Regardless of gender or species, you can romance her.
Aaaaaaand… that’s a brief (no, really, I promise) overview of Dragon Age. It doesn’t come anywhere close to encompassing all of the things I love about the franchise. The Lore of the world is richly detailed and omnipresent. The characters are fantastically voiced and so real you feel like you know them. The first and third games are some of the best RP experiences you can have without actually going and playing D&D. The second game is less immersive, but I also think it’s the funniest (especially if you play a sarcastic Hawke).
If you have any questions, I’m more than happy to elaborate on the romance system (and my personal romance ratings), the Lore, or any aspect of the games. I seriously cannot understate my love of the franchise.
#dragon age#dragon age: origins#dragon age 2#dragon age: inquisition#the world of thedas#no but really this is my favorite fictional franchise#yes i love it more than harry potter#no really i actually love it more than harry potter#i love all of the characters so much#i love the world and its complexity#i have many lore questions that i really hope get answered in future installments#i REALLY REALLY hope there WILL BE future installments

Evens for Ash! And while you're at it, A, B, and I for her as well.
aW YEAH ASH
2. How easy is it for your character to laugh?
Ash is rarely seen laughing, but behind closed doors she’ll chuckle at a few jokes. Her humor is not what one would think it would be, finding clumsy animals to be the funniest things.
4. How easy is it to earn their trust?
It’s pretty hard to earn Ash’s trust, considering shes constantly having to fight between who’s Dae and who’s not. A big way to earn her trust is to fight along side her, or knowing Elizabeth. Other than that, it takes time and effort to earn it.
6. Do they consider laws flexible, or immovable?
This ones a little tricky with Ash. She is one to listen to laws and follow them, however, she does not always think they’re right. So while some are immovable, like maybe drugs, she also knows that there are many that need fixing.
8. What were they told to stop/start doing most often as a child
Right, so, Ash’s childhood is something that she will never bring up. She was raised by her town in place of her parents who tragically died. Ash was always a good kid but often was told to stop trying to wander in the woods. She was told she needed to start practicing her magic, or else she wont be any good at it when she got older.
10. What lie do they most frequently remember telling? Does it haunt them?
Ash’s first lie she remembers was lying about her ability to do magic. In her universe, people were born with a breath of magic and inherently are about to use it. Her magic just explodes in her face, so she had to frequently lie about practicing magic. It secretly does haunt her everyday of her life, and she often wonders if something health wise is wrong with her.
12. How do they deal with an itch found in a place they can’t quite reach?
Is this a metaphor? I feel like this is a metaphor. Ash would sit there and find something to scratch it, too stubborn to ask someone to help.
14. What animal do they fear most?
Dragons, they wont admit it but dragons scare the shit out of them. They wipe out many towns during her time on earth.
16. What makes their stomach turn?
Many things make their stomach turn, but the biggest thing is people that sit around and do nothing about their situation. She has strong feelings towards fixing the world with her own two hands.
18. What embarrasses them?
When someone tries to talk to her, and she gets all flustered and studdery. Poor gals got social anxiety.
20. If they were asked to explain the difference between romantic and platonic or familial love, how would they do so?
Any bond for Ash, is important. She has a hard time bonding with people. They would probably be very blunt, to say the least. Ash would say something like, romantic love is sharing one life with another, trusting them with your life. Supporting each other no matter what. Platonic love to Ash is trusting someone else enough to not stab you in the back. (aka Ash here has low standards)
22. How does jealousy manifest itself in them (they become possessive, they become aloof, etc)?
Well, I always like to think Elizabeth and Ash deal with their jealousy in a healthy way. You can probably tell Ash is jealous because she starts to get more talkative and clumsy, running into something because shes too busy focusing on the thing that made her jealous.
24. Is sex something that they’re comfortable speaking about? To whom?
Sex is something Ash isn’t super comfortable speaking about, she is with her girlfriend, Elizabeth. Thats about it though.
26. What is their preferred mode of transportation?
Honestly, probably by horse. She trusts her horse very much, and knows that it’ll take her where she needs to go. Ash doesn’t trust much else, certainly not dragon riding.
28. Would they prefer a lie over an unpleasant truth?
Nope! Thats a huge way to get Ash to not trust you. Ash is very much one that deals with issues head on, but she can’t if she doesn’t know the unpleasant truth. She knows that not everything in life is perfect, and sometimes you have to really get down there and fix it.
30. Who do they most regret meeting?
This is the easiest one to answer, Dae. Dae is a god from her world that wants to wipe the world clean of people and start fresh. For some reason, Ash is the only person she can really communicate with. So Dae is constantly messing with her and making her question reality. Its a bad situation.
32. Do they have a go-to story in conversation? Or a joke?
Nope! They just sit there awkwardly wishing they could leave. On the rare occasion she might say something like ‘nice weather we’re having?’
34. How hard is it for them to shake a sense of guilt?
Speaking bluntly, it would tear her to pieces. Ash can never shake the sense of guilt from her body. She is not a very forgiving person, even to herself.
36. Do they actively seek romance, or do they wait for it to fall into their lap?
She had no intentions of being in a romance. Ash didn’t care enough to look, but once she saw Elizabeth she knew she had fallen. Rather hard too. Elizabeth showed her another side of Ash she didnt even know was there. A much softer side.
38. What memory do they revisit the most often?
Ash often comes back to the memory of a few towns folk finding her in the woods after her parents died. She was rather young at that age, but it made her realize that her family wasn’t just her mom and dad. Its a sad memory, but also one that gives her hope.
40. How sensitive are they to their own flaws?
She is both sensitive and not. Ash will be the first to state her flaws and problems. She is also however, super sensitive when they cause her to make a mistake. As I stated before, she has a problem with forgiving herself.
42. How badly do they want to reach their end goal?
Ash would give her life to defeat Dae. (spoiler alert, thats not what happens.) She finds it hard to believe that one day they wont have to be fighting gods, but thats why she keeps fighting.
———————————————————————————————————–
Questions for the creators
A. Why are you excited about this character?
Well, she was one of my very first characters. Ash has also been one that I wanted in books when I was younger.
B. What inspired you to create them?
Girl warriors are the best characters ever. When I was a kid, I never got to see ones that weren’t killed or strong women. It was a problem.
I. Do you prefer to keep them in their canon universe?
I mean, it makes it easier to keep to their story. I also think its a good exercise though to see how and what they would be in other universes. (im looking at you nordic.)

To Your Eternity – 09 – Gugunrise Kingdom
Fushi has rescued, reunited and made up with Gugu, and for the first time he uses his powers…strictly for fun. For the sheer thrill of scaring the shit out of random townsfolk or thrill-seeking teenagers. Gugu has no intention of going back to the house of a man who put a still in his body without his consent, and Fushi doesn’t care either way s long as he’s with Gugu.
As time passes, the penniless Gugu grows hungrier and weaker. Fushi, obviously, needs no sustenance other than stimulation. But his stimulation thus far has prepared him for this eventuality, as he is able to create the pear-like fruit March fed him, along with dango and fish, thus saving Gugu from starvation.
When Meer, who obviously knows Gugu’s scent at this point, shows up at his tent, Fushi calls the sickeningly cute and good boy Joaan, the name the boy gave to his wolf-dog. Fushi describes to Gugu how “his first person” stopped moving and “became empty”, so he “became” him. Gugu hypothesizes that both physical and emotional pain affect his bizarre friend.
He posits that if he were to die and Fushi became upset, he would become him. Gugu thinks this is seriously cool…because, well, it is. But for him specifically, it would mean even if he died, Fushi would still think of him. Gugu describes a life where he had three square meals a day, a soft bed, twin older siblings to play with, a mother and father to care for him, and an older brother to look up to.
Gugu is describing his early childhood, when, for at least a few beautiful, fleeting years, he thought he was part of just such a family and living that kind of life, where a lot of people were thinking of him. As he grew older, he began to realize he and his brother were merely the children of servants to that family. When those servants moved on to a new job, they didn’t take Gugu or his brother with them.
Gugu asks Fushi, the only one who came for him and the only one he can call family, to become him if he dies, then passes out and stops moving. For a second there, I thought that was well and truly the end of Gugu—perhaps succumbing to the nasty side effects of having a still in your gut. Fushi even seems to contemplate absorbing Gugu’s form for a hot second.
For a certainty, To Your Eternity wanted you to think Gugu had died. Then Rean pokes her head into the tent, having finally found the two runaways, and Gugu springs back to life, blushing. Turns out Fushi wasn’t the only one thinking about him or the only one who came for him. Rean tries to drag Gugu out of his ragged tent and back to the Booze Man’s house, but Gugu doesn’t wanna.
Of course, Rean’s motivations aren’t 100%honorable. She says she, Pioran and Booze Man love Gugu, but really they need to bring someone back who knows what they’re doing in the kitchen. But you know what? As someone who likes to cook for my friends and family, I’m fine with part of the reason people love me is that I cook them good food. It makes me happy when they like my food!
Rean is also unconcerned with Gugu’s appearance, and insists that he show her what he really looks like. Gugu doesn’t acquiesce to this, which means Rean doesn’t get a real look at him. It may be because of this she can reveal her own horrible disfigurement and declare with a straight face that if he casts his gaze upon it he’ll see that his own wound isn’t that bad.
The thing is, Rean’s horrible wound is nothing more but a tiny, fading scratch on her arm no more than three inches long.
It is a rare show indeed that makes me laugh and cry with such intensity, but this might just have been the funniest episode of To Your Eternity yet. Of course, tragedy and comedy have gone hand-in-hand since the dawn of storytelling itself, it’s just gratifying to see it so effortlessly pulled off here. Just like Fushi, the stronger and more diverse the viewer’s stimulation, the more is learned.
Rean goes on to tell a story that, for her, is a tragic tale of a girl who was never given agency or independence; a girl assigned a role and personality for which no expense was spared to maintain, despite the fact she had zero say in it. It is an obvious mirror image of Gugu’s sob story, told from the POV of the child of the employer, not the employee.
Even so, I do not doubt that from Rean’s perspective, she has suffered, because just like Gugu but through very different (and cushier) circumstances, she was denied the chance to be the best her she could be, which is the one she wanted to be. The grass is always greener, etc.
When Rean tells Gugu how she got her wound—saying that someone pushed her from behind out of malice—Gugu is crestfallen, as this girl misinterpreted him rescuing her from a runaway log as having assaulted her to get back at her family—simply because she never saw the log.
But just as Rean doesn’t care how it looks that someone as rtich and privileged as her is complaining that her life is too comfortable, she also doesn’t gcare whether Gugu is a monster or a human. To her, he’s just Gugu, a weird little boy she’s taken a liking to, so he should come out of the tent and enjoy the wind with her. And if he wants to cover his face, she brought him a pot with eye-holes to wear.
With Fushi having run off to find Gugu’s original mask, he and Rean agree to go looking for him. Their search takes them into town, where Rean is promptly snatched up by a goon hired by her family to retrieve her. Gugu, who later states he doesn’t care about his “circumstances” anymore, commits to simply being himself.
That happens to be someone who will barrel into someone twice his size, catch the falling Rean, and lead her by the hand to safety. As he does, Rean smiles, not just because Gugu is being Gugu, but because she’s living precisely the dream she hoped to live after running away from home. I am seriously loving this tender story of young love, which reminds me of Moonrise Kingdom, itself likely inspired by rom-com anime.
Fushi ends up finding them after retrieving Gugu’s old mask (it’s nice when you can transform into a wolf-dog, complete with a wolf-dog’s sense of smell) and locates Gugu and Rean, who is now wearing the pot to hide her identity from those sent to find her. It isn’t long before they come across a maid who is most definitely not fooled by Rean’s disguise.
It’s here where Gugu and Rean rely on Fushi to cover their retreat, which he does non-lethally by assuming the form of March and writhing on the ground before the maid, who sees the little girl’s arrow wound and has no choice but to tend to her before going after Rean.
While searching for Gugu’s mask, Fushi’s creator paid him a brief visit, warning him to keep his guard up. As the maid carries March!Fushi, he’s suddenly snatched up by a tentacle of the “unspeakable” enemy he was warned about. His creator even narrates that this was bound to happen, as Fushi has failed to gain any sophisticated tactical skills since his last scrape with the enemy, and thus the enemy was always going to strike first.
Even so, something happens that neither the enemy nor indeed the creator might have foreseen: Gugu coming to his rescue. I’m not sure what he can possibly do when he’s just a small human boy and even Fushi seems helpless before the enemy’s power. Indeed, as we’re reaching the halfway point of the 20-episode series, Gugu’s days are surely numbered. But even if resistance is futile, I’m glad he’s there for his friend and brother.

Time Limit Friendship
When I was younger and I was big into role playing I often wondered how much fun it would be to create a character that had a physical expiration date. No one else would know this when they started interacting with my character - there would just be an in-character death of sorts and that would be the end. I ended up deciding against doing this because of the level of drama and the lack of consent. There is a lot of time, emotion, and energy that goes into creating characters and propelling stories forward. I was also up to my ears in different characters and I couldn’t see starting a new one just for this purpose.
A year and a half ago, I was sent to a funeral service on behalf of my girl. She came down with the flu the day she was supposed to board the plane and couldn’t make it to Papa’s funeral. I hadn’t made it Nana’s funeral because of work. Our relationship was almost nonexistant but when you identify as a Daddy and your girl asks you please, it’s quite often you say yes. I sat behind her bio parents at the funeral and witnessed the service. When they asked if I was a friend or family, they didn’t know how to answer. How many dinners had I attended over the years with their daughter? How many of my poly partners had they met? How much grief had I caused them when I stood up for her rights as a trans person to be treated with respect and dignity in her own home? A little of both was the answer by the end of the night.
I had an invitation to attend dinner with them not that much later. It would be the first one that I would attend without my girl being there, the buffer, the barrier between me and her parents. I negotiated with her and asked her how she felt about it. She said she was fine with it. She said that she knew that I had always liked her dad anyhow and it wasn’t fair for me not to get to speak with him any longer just because she had moved away.
At some point, she apologized for moving away.
I told her that if I go this time and accept this time that I won’t ask her every time anymore. It will set a precedent that I can just continue if I want to. She agreed and said that was fine. I accepted the dinner invitation after avoiding them for over a year.
At this dinner, we sat and talked and drank. Someone brought up some childhood memory that wasn’t pleasant. I shared a little about my childhood. The room fell quiet and no one was sure what to say. It takes a lot of liquor to get me to talk about my childhood. Her mom asks me, how many kids are there? She asks me, how old are you? She asks me, what is your real name?
I answer all of her questions. Her dad sits quietly, listening. He doesn’t drink. He’s sober. He’s absorbing. Towards the end of dinner, he casually throws out that he has a hobby. He plays pool. I ask if I can watch sometime. He seems excited and not at all convinced that I would follow through with coming to watch him. I mean to watch him once, when my schedule allows.
I show up to pool. It is only the second time that I have been alone with him. The first was when he helped us move from one house to another. And then we weren’t alone, we just didn’t have his wife around. At pool, he seems so different. He shares information about the game. He narrates what he is doing. He explains what is good, what isn’t good, how he’s trying to improve. He creates a sacred space that he is existing in and he invites me in.
After the game, I stay and we talk. He tells me about his childhood. He tells me, after hearing about my childhood, he thinks I could understand his. I can. I do. I go home and cry about it. I ask if I can watch him again sometime. He tells me that he plays here every Wednesday night.
I go and watch him every Wednesday night.
Along the way I invite his wife. At first he wishes she would come and see him play. Eventually he is glad she doesn’t. She wouldn’t appreciate seeing him as competitive as he is.
Along the way, we get to know one another. We talk about our similar professions and how so many people fail at their professions. We bond over our similar outlook on how to do our jobs, the importance of feedback, and our constant strive for improvement.
Along the way, we discuss relationships. We talk about communication, setting boundaries, getting our needs met. We talk about our sexuality, we talk about me being poly and his not-so-great introduction to poly, we talk about making non-sexual relationship commitments. This doesn’t always go as smooth as I would hope for but he’s honest and upfront and that’s refreshing.
Along the way we talk about intellectualism, stagnant people, those who hinder us. I’ve avoided them for most of my life; he’s married to one of them. We talk about our struggles when we don’t align so well with society, our differences, how our perspectives have shaped us and our relationships.
Along the way we talk about how being on the spectrum effected his entire life, we talk about how he feels he isn’t good at relationships, we talk about how people who get to know him don’t like him. We talk about how he can’t maintain friendships, how his wife draws people in but also drives them away, how he never stops feeling a certain situation’s emotions even if the situation is over. We talk about how being on the spectrum cost him opportunities in life, opportunities for love, opportunities for friends. I talk about how he is better at relationships than he thinks he is.
Along the way, I try to drag him out of his comfort zone. I invite him out to places. I invite him to game night at the local sex dungeon. We have a local sex dungeon he repeats. I invite him to a film festival because he loves films. I invite him to a million things and encourage him to try new things and go new places and sometimes he accepts. Rarely he accepts. But I see him every Wednesday night at pool.
I see him every Wednesday night at pool because that night at dinner almost a year ago, they talk about moving away. They talk about going to live near their daughter again. And when Papa passed away, he left enough money to make that happen. That night I grieved what felt like the loss of my third set of parents. And then I took that person that I wanted to know better and I turned him into a friend that I knew had an expiration date.
He warned me along the way, you’ll leave too.
He warned me along the way, I’m not good at relationships.
He warned me along the way, no one thinks I’m funny.
He warned me along the way, no one stays.
And I told him that she couldn’t drive me away, that he is good at relationships, he’s the smartest and one of the funniest men I’ve ever known, and that even though he’ll be hundreds of miles away I’ve started saving so I can come and see you.
Four more weeks i all I have. I don’t know if this can continue once he leaves. I don’t know what it will look like. I don’t know if it can still grow. I don’t know who will take care of my friend when he’s gone. I don’t know if our time together is up.
