Who exactly is this about? (I'm Not That Girl)

When you are finding someone to play Elphaba in a production of Wicked, you need someone with range. Not just vocal range, but acting skill. Because they need to be able to perform with the stage presence and anger inherent in Defying Gravity, but they also need to be able to reach the devastating low that is I'm Not That Girl.

To me, I'm Not That Girl is at the core of what Wicked is, and what musicals are in general. It is a combination of singing and acting, and is someone excelling at both.

But, I would like to drive home the queer reading of this story, and try to explain why I think that reading adds to the message and power of the musical.

Let me explain.

SPOILERS AHEAD (Wicked)

I don't think I need to explain why this song hits so unbelievably hard. It's about unrequited love, and its a strength of the satire that is this musical.

Usually in musicals and fairy tales, the love story is fairly uncomplicated, with an extra option thrown in but not really given much depth and the audience doesn't really buy the drama.

Seriously, how many of you shipped Belle and Gastone?

So, this is a song about that love not working out, not because of plot reasons, but because its entirely one sided at this point. To Elphaba's knowledge, and probably the audience's as well, Fiyero loves Galinda, and there's nothing she can do about it.

"Don't wish, don't start Wishing only wounds the heart I wasn't born for the rose and the pearl There's a girl I know He loves her so I'm not that girl"

This is the other side of love, heartbreak.

Elphaba is a relatively rational character. She has been through the ringer and has ended up detached and restricted in her emotions. Now, someone has pushed through her barriers and she doesn't know what to do about it.

This song seems to me like Elphaba wrestling with love as a whole. Don't feel, don't try. It'll hurt too much, it's not worth the pain. So why can't she stop thinking about it?

The term "rose and thorn" sent me down a spiral.

Both Florists' Transworld Delivery and Bloom and Wild gave a ton of meanings for roses that boiled down to "it's romantic."

Pearls meanwhile have a ton of meanings depending on the culture. The blog My Pearl proposed these, most of which did not have anything to do with love at all. According to My Pearl, pearls are commonly associated with purity, innocence, and wisdom. So, not particularly romantic. However, My Pearl did say this:

"[White Pearls] are often seen as symbols of new beginnings and are often used as gifts for special occasions such as weddings and anniversaries."

So, this is a symbol of a happy ending, and Elphaba is essentially saying that she doesn't deserve that because of her birth. In essence, she is convinced that her difference makes her unworthy of happiness, which... if you think this about yourself, please don't. I don't know who you are, but you are worthy of love.

"Every so often we long to steal To the land of what-might-have-been But that doesn't soften the ache we feel When reality sets back in"

My main point for this series on Wicked as a whole has been that it is about dreams and reality colliding, and this verse fits with that. It's Elphaba letting herself imagine and fantasise about a stolen moment with Fiyero. Once again, at this point she has no idea that Fiyero likes her back, so this is purely theoretical.

I have been using the free sheet music from this website for my analysis, and I would like to stress before I continue that I am far from an expert on the actual theory of music here. I can point to which bits go up and down, and can name a few chords, but I can't tell you about the intricate workings of that.

With that said, allow me to attempt some music theory.

The time signature of this song is all over the place, split between 4/4 and 6/8. In other words, sometimes the bars finish earlier, and so the thoughts within continue, pulling you along as you wait for the conclusion.

In this song, the two signatures differentiate that splitting of reality and dreams. For example, the verse below is in 6/8 time:

As Elphaba imagines, she breaks from reality and the verse is really flowy, almost comforting within the song. But then it ceases the second she comes back to reality.

This keeps happening. Elphaba starts in reality, then drifts into dreams and comes crashing back down.

This time, however, the reality of the verse is about Galinda, the barrier between Elphaba and happiness, the wall she stands in her way. Although, it's a little bit odd to talk about a romantic rival in the way that Elphaba does, isn't it?

"Blithe smile, lithe limb She who's winsome, she wins him Gold hair with a gentle curl"

Let's talk about Dolly Parton.

I genuinely had a whole section trying to argue that this song is the Jolene of musical theatre, but then multiple people mentioned it to me in person by that term, and @a-fast-rebloger referred to it as such here on tumblr. So clearly I'm preaching to the converted here.

So instead, I'm going to explain what that means.

First up, the queer coding of Jolene is barely less than explicit, its essentially the one Romeo and Juliet speech that everyone remembers. "Romeo, romeo, am I in love with you?"

But, the song actually has a history with the queer community, with this article by Nadine Hubbs detailing its implications. The song also has covers and rewrites that bring that subtext to the forefront by Nadine Hubbs, Rainaeiry, Annapantsu (@annapantsu), Jessica Rica, and Dolly Parton herself (Although I have not been able to find footage of this), as well as arguably the versions by Lil Nas X and Caleb Hyles.

Rainaeiry has two covers of Jolene on her youtube channel, by the way, and a cover of I'm Not That Girl that I highly recommend.

Jolene is a song about unrequited love and being unable to do anything about it, and the song focuses on the woman who forms the barrier to this love. It is a song about defeat.

"Your beauty is beyond compare With flaming locks of auburn hair Ivory skin and eyes of emerald green Your smile is like a breath of spring Your voice is soft like summer rain And I cannot compete with you Jolene"

Compare that with this:

"Blithe smile, lithe limb She who's winsome, she wins him Gold hair with a gentle curl That's the girl he chose And Heaven knows I'm not that girl"

This is more than just thematic parallels, this is subject overlap, and remember when I mentioned the dreams vs reality theme being expressed by the time signature? Well take a look at the time signature for that verse.

The verse switches halfway through, as Elphaba begins describing her friend, and that dreaminess comes back as she discusses Galinda, but then dissipates when she remembers where she stands.

This is a love song by Elphaba, about Galinda. It's about how Elphaba isn't deserving, how she isn't pretty, how she isn't chosen. And who does she associate with those traits, but Galinda.

And here is where my reading comes in, finally. I read both of these witches as either biromantic or bisexual, probably both. Galinda for reasons I will get to in a later post, but Elphaba because of this song.

This song to me, is a true love triangle. Elphaba is desperately in love with both Fiyero and Galinda, but she can't reconcile those feelings, and she can see that they both seem to make each other happy, and she doesn't want to break that for either of them. This is a song about defeat.

I keep separating the line "I'm not that girl" from the rest of the verses, and I've been doing that for a reason. The line gets separated by the music as a melodic outlier.

Every part of the song rises and falls. I'm not sure what this is technically called musically, but it's like a ramp or a ski jump. The notes lower slowly, then raise sharply and drop off even more so, as seen above. This matches the song as a whole, which rises and falls in the same way. But consider the following:

This is the only line in the entire song that only descends. It is a line of resignation, as the reality weighs down on our protagonist. Once again, this is a song about someone who does not feel like she deserves love from either Fiyero or Galinda, because of how she was born.

And I will say this again: If you feel like Elphaba here, that you are undeserving of affection, then you are wrong. Everyone is worthy of love, even you.

Final Thoughts

The correct term for this song is "heart wrenching".

While it isn't my favourite in the musical, you will just have to wait and see for that, it is definitely up there, and is one of the few numbers in all of musical theatre that I would classify as a perfect song.

Also, I would not be able to forgive myself if I wrote this post and didn't mention that Steffan Hughes' rendition of I'm Not That Girl is genuinely the most emotionally resonant video on YouTube and it needs more attention than it has.

What are you willing to RP when it comes to shipping?

I like to feel things out through the writing and let the ships sail organically and perhaps also majestically along the Aegean... or straight into Charybdis; it depends. When the writing works, I find we’ll inevitably have conversations about where we want to set our sails. When in doubt or with a new mun, I try to follow your lead. Pre-establishing ships are something we have to discuss and plot.

How large does the age gap have to be to make it uncomfortable?

Mun can take or leave age gaps. The muse… In default aus, Modern!/Music!Ben’s around 30-34, and as (self conscious) public figures, I’m not sure either would date under 28. But Music!Ben is Music!Ben. Ex-Con!Ben is 34+ and, at any rate, would much rather any romantic interest be at least around his age. 

I move all over Dark!Ren’s timeline. Sometimes he’s he’s a 40-something-year-old cyborg who absorbed all his knights and roams wild space for fresh meat.  Sometimes, he’s a deranged 25-year-old still-kind-of-a-kid on a leash holding a bunch of other deranged kids on leashes. ya know what..... Kalim is one of those sunshine characters that naturally interacts and "befriends" so many characters. It's always the sunshine characters that I'm drawn to put in a giant poly-hole where basically everyone is in love with them. It just makes sense.

Kalim x Silver: He's always waking Silver up in class and tries to help is drowsy spells. They're also just one of the few genuinely sweet guys on campus so it's pure fluff. A bonus advantage is that since Silver is a Trained Knight (or on the road to be) he can protect Kalim from assassination attempts.

Kalim x Ruggie: Eat The Rich w/ a twist. My precious hyena boy DESERVES to get married to a sincere Sugar Daddy (or as my gf and I like to say, Sugar Bestie™). He's worked hard enough and Kalim is one of the few upper class individuals that would NEVER use his money or status to control, manipulate or abuse another. He just wants to help out and the endless positivity would not only bring Rugs outta his comfort zone but would also impact those in his hometown A LOT.

Riddle x Kalim: Not a favorite, but I get it. Two kids from wealthy families (one more wealthy than the other) who were kinda isolated from the "regular" world and gotta figure shit out for themselves away from their former caretakers. Obvi, very different contexts and personality but that's what helps them depend on one another. Even when they can't relate, they can Listen and Grow together.

Floyd x Kalim: ARE YOU KIDDING THEY'RE ADHD BUDDIES?!?!? Not only can they relate with similar neurological issues, but their common interests can be a safe zone for them to bond. On top of that, even with their reckless personalities and their overall lack of forethought, Floyd is STRONG and could protect Kalim from any pushback or consequences. They're also both raised by Extreme Capitalist (even thou we don't exactly know what the Tweels parents DO) so the business sense and exposure to the darker side of things probably wouldn't be too much of an adjustment for either side.

Obvi Jamil x Kalim: I know not everyone likes this ship (and considering the dynamic and difference in power/status I TOTALLY get it). Even if the relationship is seen through platonic soulmates, brother-like, or just a 'we-were-stuck-together-for-years-and-now-we-don't-know-how-to-live-apart' sitcom kinda vibe they'll ALWAYS be linked together. Besides, an angsty, complicated childhood friends to lovers story with repressed mutual pinning is a guilty pleasure of mine lol!

Whoever he gets paired with, regardless of if it's a ship that has an anchor in canon interactions or PURELY fueled by fanon crack, there's a billion tropes to work with before even having to dip into AU or Crossover. Kalim is a COMPLEX CHARACTER with so many random lore drops and info that has so much potential. Even when people are writing or creating fan-produces with a more 2d version of his character, he's still lovable!! He's one of the few reoccurring characters in a cast full of obnoxious, weird, arrogant, awful, annoying, egotistical, pigheaded teenage boys with the power of NUKES.... And isn't completely terrible.

Lemme reiterate, that I LOVE so many characters in Twisted Wonderland but boy do these kids get on my nerves. They're all little assholes in some way or another, but there's a range between "okay, pretty standard high schooler" to "IDC IF YOURE TRAUMATIZED NO AMOUNT OF BACKSTORY CAN EXCUSE YOUR ATTITUDE AND BEHAVIOR!!!!! YOU'RE A FUCKING INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL WTF" and Kalim is a lot chiller. He's irrational sometimes and often does things without thinking it through.... But he's also a kid who's allowed to make mistakes and grow now that he's away from the bubble he grew up in. He can interact with people of all walks of life and get that perspective.

And depending on who he's paired with, romantic or otherwise, it's fascinating and heart wrenching and awe inspiring to watch him grow through the lens and experiences of the other person(s).

scattered thoughts of omori mostly basil, involve ship talk, read it with caution

it is just my point of view; I have many things I haven't considered, and I haven't played the game for quite a while. Also, a biased basil defender

as a person who enjoys AU and other creations, I don't mind the character being ooc, and considering how people read a piece of work is all different please don't take me seriously.

sunny and basil relationship. I just often think if Mari lived, and nothing serious happened, I could see them develop into very good friends, romantic or not. However, Mari's death somehow made Sunny and Basil tie more closely to one another. The amount of stuff we see in a dream world is just really written off they were very very close. And for Basil as a character, we have nothing more than his situation with Sunny to base on. (Which is also why in the basil side of the ship I prefer him and sunny) He becomes solely focused on Sunny and makes so many people write him off as Basil obsessed or too dependent on Sunny because Basil does have not much good interaction with the other three (to accept help or have conversations other than Sunny). But I always see the other way around, and on my side, we don't see more of Basil's personality than the last three days he is panicking all over the place. He might have an obsession with Sunny, but it is not all his character traits if I'm being picky.

Kel, I put a little here because I don't want people to think, I hate him because I criticize one of my favorite characters harshly. First of all, I really like kel and Hero, they are surprisingly well-mannered. Applause to their parent. It is the best placement to let kel to interact with Sunny. Kel would love to help but never really insists on it, if you refused his help he probably would not bother again, for example, if Sunny doesn't open the door. It not saying this is a bad thing, I think he is just treating the situation as giving people space, and also you need to say it right into his face or he might not understand (sometimes dense when he is arguing with Aubery, or he is just being funny.) This might be the result of that time of the hero blasting out at him (my friend says), he thinks that if he doesn't understand he might as well give people space.

sunny, man, I suddenly think of sunny. I sometimes think he might not be chill; he just does not want to act on stuff, being natural can avoid conflict and decisions. But I do think he does have a lot of emotions but can't express them properly autism. yeah, passive but with a creative mind. So where is my aggressive sunny, just why all sunny kind of just a fluff ball on the side and standing there and being cute? (I'm actually ok with that, just can't stand too much of Sunny being cute and standing there

Well.... Koga is ReiKoga, Jun is HiyoJun & Chiaki is MidoChia. My OCs do not have OTPs as they are fandomless with no connections. I try not to let my OTPs show too much on my RP blogs as I don't wanna make them seem like they influence my shipping choices on my blog or that I'm gonna force them onto others, but... this is what they are.

what are you willing to RP when it comes to shipping?

I am very open to a lot of stuff!! I do personally find it difficult to keep up the ex-lovers trope when it comes to ships as I am very much more a sucker for the cute & sweet. I am also open to polycules when it comes to my shipping! Though, all parties involved MUST be accepting of it. If you have an idea, just toss it my way. I'm very chill about a lot of stuff.

how large does the age gap have to be to make it uncomfortable?

It depends. This more-so is angled toward muses that are immortal or supernatural. If your character is just a normal guy or gal, then once you hit 10 years+ age gap, it starts to get uncomfortable. This pertains mainly to my OCs. If your immortal/supernatural muse has an appearance 10 years older than mine, I also tend to steer clear for romance. Just weirds me out the larger the age gap, even if there's consent. NOW for my enstars muses, Koga, Jun, & Chiaki - it is limited. I already have this set in my rules to not make things uncomfortable for a lot of people as they are 18/19, just graduates, in the enstars universe. Yes, they are those ages. They are not aged up. Just wanted to clarify this is solely for romantic/friendships. If it's parental/teacher sort of ship then age gaps are fine regardless.

A bit, yes! I am big into shipping tbh, BUT from a lot of prior situations, I am also extremely hesitant for ships. Platonic ships??? Absolutely no hesitation. I am not selective in the slightest bit. They can be friends like immediately after 1 interaction. I will give you my arm. For romantic ships??? Yes. I am very unlikely to ask because I get very hesitant. I love love writing cute, shippy stuff like kisses & cuddled but I get very hesitant with it. Tho, more than not, I quietly reach out to ship.

how far do steamy moments have to go before they’re considered NSFW?

Once there's legit touching of private parts, or if undressing comes first before that moment. Dry humping & grinding is in more of the suggestive territory, unless again, if there's undressing. Once the clothes are off, it's definitely NSFW. Any touching of privates even if the clothes are still on, that's NSFW. Just making out & bodies just against each other, that's suggestive.

does one have to ask to ship with you?

You can!!! If you require the asking as a shipper, then yes. If you feel like we have a ship starting to go without the asking, we can make it clear through asking. Sometimes I DO just end up shipping even without the clarified "do you wanna ship?" "yeah!" because things just CLICK which I am cool with.

how often do you like to ship?

I..... do love shipping. I'd love to ship more often. Of course platonic stuff just flows so easily. But I am a sucker for the cute romantic stuff that I do not actually hold myself back a lot of the time. If you want to just kiss my muses, I will not say no. It's a little bit harder with my enstars boys in comparison to my OCs but... ya know... ship with my boys.

I am indeed multiship!! But my romantic ships are limited!! I will have 1 main ship partner for each character, whom I will reference when there are no specifications. I will also generally have a secondary main position available. I DO feel a bit bad to limit myself when everyone writes their characters a bit differently, so I generally do not take on exclusives. If I do take on an exclusive, I do try to make it clear!!! I just prefer main over exclusive except for really close friends of mine. There are no mains in ships on my OCs tho, everything is equally fair game for them. It's just shipping canon with canon that I mentally do this for myself.

I'm in between. I love ships, BUT I do tend to ship more or less ultimately. Roleplay opens me up to more potential ships when interacting with someone gets my interests going. But I do... tend to... not talk about too many ships or show too many ships. I have a few set ships I'm interested in, but I put that all aside for rp to give everyone a chance to ship with my characters!!! I am ship obsessed with my OCs tho if I ever get back to writing them. Just love all of them. Give them all love. They're all plenty old enough.

Well..... I already discussed that at the beginning of this. My favorite ship is ReiKoga presently, when it comes to shippy stuff they have taken over my brain. HiyoJun is close behind. But I am also big on polyUNDEAD ( Rei/Kaoru/Adonis x Koga ) & polyEden ( NagiHiyoIbaJun ).

What’s your OTP for your Muse(s)? I trrrryy to separate my personal OTPs from what actually unfolds through writing, so for my canon characters I generally keep an open mind. Just because two characters canonically have a bond in the source material doesn't mean it'll translate to the threads bc it depends on the writers' interpretation and writing style and chemistry.

What are you willing to RP when it comes to shipping? I love exploring many of the different facets of human connections. Being on the aroace spectrum means I love portraying "Queerplatonic" relationships as significant and passionate as romantic/sexual relationships.

For my hard no's: anything with domestic abuse I do not want to touch. but when it pertains to a genre like superheroes/fantasy/sci-fi, there's a difference there because that's more of a situational violence (in the case of an enemies to lovers.) i also don't really want to do any pregnancy plots ;;;;

Things that I'm GAME for: One-sided, unrequited longing is fine as long as we both discuss that dynamic. Past relationships/exes are great! Endgame ships that have plotted on/off's in between is fine too

PERSONALLY if it's something PG-13esque like making out and something you'd find in a CW show, I wouldn't clutch my pearls but I would tag it just so the dash remains a safe space for people. But if I see a read more cut I'm expecting clothes are off and we are talking about 'heat pooling' 'voices hitching' tongues doing ANY gymnastics etc etc

5. What's a tag you never want to use for your works even when it applies?

Unreliable Narrator. It feels like a spoiler, honestly (TKAM didn't have “unreliable narrator” stamped on it, and neither did Great Gatsby*), but also...I feel like it goes without saying? In a sense, we’re all unreliable narrators in our lives, especially when we’re young, especially when we're emotional (some of the characters I write fit this bill). I know the trope is referring to an extreme example, and the tag is used to tell readers “hey, these aren't the author’s views”, but the tag isn’t even used that often as is. Idk, I have a complicated relationship with it 😂 I’ve used it, and I still will, but not entirely with confidence

*plus not everyone agrees that Nick is an unreliable narrator, it’s an uncommon interpretation from what I gather. Isn’t that part of the fun too—the “not quite knowing”?

8. How slow is a slow burn?

Depends on the ship. But my general rule is: as slow as you can make it without resorting to stupid misunderstandings or stretching out a love triangle too long

(Everyone has different tolerance levels ofc so “too long” is also subjective, but for example, I think Westallen had a good timeframe for theirs…even if the execution wasn’t perfect and it was slightly on the longer side)

13. Rate your worldbuilding skills from 1 to 10

Maybe a 2-3? I’m not very good at it 😅 there’s a reason I mostly write within pre-established worlds. I’m better at fleshing out existing lore than creating my own

17. Past or present tense? Why?

Definitely past tense (I can read present tense fics, but not often, and I definitely don’t write present tense anymore). Present tense just reads as unnatural to me—I’m telling a story, and to me it’s something that already happened rather than something that is happening, if that makes sense

22. What is it about watching the same two idiots falling in love over and over again?

Sometimes two people connect in such a meaningful way that you wanna test that connection by putting them in multiple situations and seeing if they connect in the same way 💞 if I’m honest, I prefer this platonically (as you can no doubt tell from the number of Barry & Morgan AUs I’ve talked about 😅) but I love it romantically too! Shows just how connected people can be, no matter the situation

24. Thoughts on flashbacks/flashforwards

Flashbacks are a narrative tool that can be strong and effective...or utterly pointless. Cobra Kai uses flashbacks well to flesh out character backstories and add context (though I’d argue it could use more flashbacks in certain places), while the Flash s8/s9 overuses them to such a frivolous and ridiculous degree—there maybe 2-3 actual good ones, while the others recap things that have already been shown on screen, as if the writers think we’re stupid

I don't see the point of flashforwards tbh 🤷‍♀️

34. Do you write to improve? Or is that not a concern for you?

It’s not a primary concern, but I definitely welcome growth when it comes. More than once, I’ve read old writing and cringed, and then I remember the advice that the cringe means I'm growing as a writer...and that’s good! Taking risks as a writer, expanding my narrative voice, letting my style change over time...that's fun for me. I’m not stressed about improving to a certain standard, but I always look to improve in the things I do 💞 and to be a brave enough writer to take risks

But like their relationship coming from a place of mutual admiration, both seeing the other positively in some way or another, even holding the other in high regard. Yes yes YES to everything you said!! However, I want to leapfrog off into my own thoughts about them cuz I don't have anything to add to these thoughts.

Skizz and Cleo both have different love languages (Skizz's being touch, Cleo's being either service or quality time (i can never decide)) but they both took the time to learn the others to both be able to read when the other is showing care and to express care in ways that are y'know to the others language. So you'll often see Cleo wrap an arm around Skizz's waist and pull him to her side when they're standing together, probably talking with someone else or watching something in the distance. Skizz will often brush Cleo's hair for her, especially since she's told him how it bothers her shoulder to get the back knots out. Skizz can generally read Cleo's body language and tone and so most days he greets her with a big hug and maybe even a kiss depending on how you characterize their relationship and if you think Cleo would like kisses, but sometimes he'll just greet her with words until she initiates contact and most other people (joe is def not included in this one) cannot tell why the switch up, but she gets really overwhelmed by touch sometimes and that's why. Cleo always bakes Skizz a loaf of bread when he has to go away for any period of time, and sometimes other treats as well.

We should come up with a ship name for these two

io's hard (to say the least) to romantically ship with so I thought I'd make a post talking about it. io has a very specific type. innocence, pacifism, and positivity will never attract them (in fact, it's very likely to do the opposite). io desires confidence and deadliness above all else. someone who can kill, who can hurt, and despite their feelings on the matter, can, would, and most likely will do it again. people who have trauma tend to appeal to them more, too - as often those people understand why io might act the way they do. to sum it up, io is attracted to people who have gray morals. skewed morals. people who can embrace violence, whether they like it or not. although... io does tend to favor those who like it. [don't be terribly discouraged though, as lucius did not like embracing violence but io loved him beyond words.] I would also like to mention really quickly here that io is also attracted to banter/snark/sass, fiery personalities, and powerful (physically/magically) people. strength of character is something that is fantastic at catching their eye.

speaking of trauma - io carries a shitton of it. they were abused mentally, emotionally, and physically by their parents for 23 years. eighteen centuries has done a whole lot in terms of trying to recover, but io still deals with fits of anger, dissociation, and flashbacks. they're also extremely dependent on alcohol (high functioning alcoholic) and despite their desire to quit, will not seek the help needed for it. love and trust do not go hand in hand with io. like I've said I hate to say it but I genuinely think io is incapable of 100% trust. I trust you... is always followed by the ultimatum, as much as I can. io's concept of trust has been irreparably shattered. there is no fitting the pieces back together no matter how badly either party want it. asking io do you trust me? is perhaps the worst question you could ask. you don't want to hear the answer, unless you're willing to accept io's reasoning. io also does not experience romantic attraction immediately, and when they do finally experience it, it's very rare and only in an already established relationship - they're demiromantic. now you might be going, hey adair where's the good stuff? love and trust do not go hand in hand, yes. but io loves hard. they can easily fall into devotion to an unhealthy degree. they want to help their partner, they want to comfort, they want to cook meals and share kisses and embrace every bit of physical affection they can. inter mundos becomes something that io can use to show their partner the world. week-long vacations wherever they want to go. dinner in another country. io embraces violence. io likes it. they'll fight tooth and nail for their partner. io lets their softer, more playful side show around partners. their humor may be deadpan, but there'll certainly be more of it. they embrace their childish side and let it show around loved ones because they know they can expect acceptance. joining them in childish pursuits only makes their love grow. io's own trauma lends them experience and intimate understanding for those who do have it. this doesn't take away the fact that sometimes things hurt and lashing out at them upsets and hurts them but... they get it? they will, most likely, end up doing the same thing at some point or another (when they don't immediately leap to self isolation). io will always come back and apologize, though. in short, io is complicated and hard to be with. they have enough baggage to fill an entire plane's luggage compartment and then some. but god, they love with every ounce of their being.

ANON IM SORRY THIS TOOK 20000 YEARS TO ANSWER but i've just been staring at it and thinking. how do i respond. because believe it or not this is hard for me to answer.

because i really really like hikaharukao but my view on it is?? so complicated. because okay. i do not like hikaharu. i've made a long ass rant before on why i (respectfully) do not like it and thing narratively they're better as friends. i def get why people like it it's just not for me. and also besides not liking it for Narrative reasons I'm also petty and don't like it on the basis this kinda makes Kaoru alone kjdbehjfbreh (it's anime i'm allowed to be petty) (which is funny because i like kaoharu???? fuck hikaru i guess)

ANYWAYS hikaharukao....... so. ok it's not secret i love hikakao and i've already said i like kaoharu. so let me try to explain how i think hikaharukao works.

Firstly my headcanons for the characters' sexualities n stuff play a big role in this. Haruhi is bisexual/placiosexual + grayromantic, Kaoru is biromantic homosexula, and Hikaru is homoromantic bisexual.

So, the best way I can put it is they are all qpps who fuck sometimes. but like. its mostly hikaru and kaoru doing Unholy things and haruhi is just There sometimes but not really In It (because I headcanon she doesn't like being touched in most cases). she contributes sometimes but it's very hands-off. or at least she'll touch them but they are not allowed to touch her.

as per my headcanon Hikaru is into her sexually but not really romantically and vice versa for Kaoru. altho haruhi is barely a woman as much as she is a man so it gets a Little Confusing there. But it usually goes by those rules.

yeah best way I can put it is that they are a group of bestiiiies with benefits sorta. i dont think they call each other bf/gf so they are mistaken as friends as often as they are lovers. im sure half of the strangers outside of ouran school who know them Haruhi is just dating One Dude who has a wildly different personality depending on the day you catch him.

you could also view this as a "kaoharu + hikakao they are just sharing kaoru" which i think is true in a way. i mean if you throw in a massive hikaharu brotp in there so it's like kaoru/haruhi half-dating, hikaru/haruhi besties, hikaru/kaoru my lawyer has advised me not to say anything further.

but as said haruhi is grayromantic so like she isn't really DATING either of them. it's weird. like i said just a group of bestiiies <3 (also i have a complicated viewing on hikakao in general too so i dont think THEYRE dating either. like this is just "normal" to them)

now you may say "noxia you sound insane" and "noxia what do these labels mean" and also "noxia did i mention you're insane" and yes yes i know. but listen. i have no clue how else to explain it. all i know is i like hikakao but i wish haruhi was there sometimes. also i think haruhi has a great dynamic with both twins and they would watch cinderella together :) kaoru is talking at 100mph and hikaru and haruhi are leaning backwards to blink morse code at each other. they go to the mall later and hikaru and kaoru are fucking it up and haruhi must reign them in like they are dogs. kaoru and haruhi having a very chill thoughtful discussion about some book they read in a bookstore and then hikaru rounds the corner with "they have EVERY warrior cat book here" and kaoru and haruhi are like "omg every single one ?" this is how i view them.

A: affection. | are they affectionate? how do they show affection?

Childe is painfully unpredictable. Sometimes, his affection will be shown through jokes and teasing, playful antics that let you know he's comfortable around you and wants you to feel safe in his presence. Other times, he's just physical. He'll pepper you with kisses, hold you close to him, —whatever he feels gets his point across the best at any given moment. He's not much one for sappy words or large declarations of love, but you feel his appreciation in every touch. What he offers is more than enough.

B: bizarre. | something strange they do or a weird quirk they have with or without their partner?

Childe has an odd habit of leaving obscure items in strange places. He's not forgetful for the most part; he remembers where he places things, you just don't understand why he'd want to put his mask inside of a lampshade instead of just putting it on the desk itself, or why he feels the need to leave bags of mora in the vases of potted plants.

C: comfort. | are they good at comforting their partner? how do they do it?

Childe isn't always the best at being comforting, but he tries his hardest. Most of the time, his idea of comfort consists of just talking things out and throwing you some jokes to giggle at so that you feel better over the course of things. A warm hug or a forehead kiss never hurts though.

D: domestic. | how do they feel about settling down? do they cook/clean?

Childe isn't really one for settling down in a traditional sense. He has no problem devoting himself to you romantically, —but not traveling, staying in one place forever. . . That's a tougher pill for him to swallow. In regard to cleaning, he's not a big fan of it, but does it in order to keep himself from living in filth. He doesn't love cooking either, especially when he's doing it alone, but he's been to his fair share of new places, and he's picked up lots of tips, tricks, and recipes along the way, so he likes sharing those with you, —and he likes it even more when you give him a hand in the kitchen, or vice versa.

E: ending. | if they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?

Childe would probably do it over note, too scared to see your expression if he were to do it in person. He would beat himself up over it for quite a while though, knowing you deserved to hear it face to face and not just from writing on a piece of paper.

F: future. | do they think about the future? how does it look?

Childe does think about the future. He always has, and since entering a relationship with you, he's no different. He likes to daydream about all the places he wants to travel with you, all the sights he wants to see with you by his side. Childe also thinks about how it'll feel to grow and change alongside you, and for you to do the same in turn. He's excited for whatever the future holds, especially since it's with you.

G: gifts. | how often do they give their partner gifts? what kind of gifts are they?

Childe brings gifts home often. Since he travels frequently, when it happens that you can't go along with him, he's always sure to bring a souvenir back with him. The type of gift can vary depending on where he traveled, of course, but often he brings home little trinkets for you, and now you have a collection of them displayed somewhere in your room. He might also surprise you with some accessories every now and again: earrings, necklaces, rings, etc.

H: honesty. | are they honest with their partner? do they keep secrets?

Childe does keep some secrets, —not because he wants to, but because some things are better left unsaid. In his line of work, that is especially true. You try not to pry too much, worried that doing so might put him in an uncomfortable corner. He appreciates your willingness to trust him, even if it's blind sometimes. For what it's worth, Childe does his best to be honest about what he safely and comfortably can.

I: i love you. | how fast do they say the L word? who says it first?

Childe is surprisingly open with his feelings, much more than one might expect. That charming exterior is majoritively who he is on the inside as well, but he has layers to him just as anyone else. However, he doesn't say he loves you quickly, and when he does, you know he means it. It's coming from the heart. He is more likely than you to say it first.

J: jealousy. | do they get jealous? does it show?

Childe doesn't tend to get jealous, at least not in a genuine sense. He might feign it every now and again in hopes of getting some extra attention from you, —but it takes a lot for him to feel anything real in that department. It's in part because he's generally very confident in himself, and part because he trusts you and knows that you'll stay loyal to him.

K: kisses. | what kind of kisses do they like to give/receive?

Childe likes to give many kinds of kisses; it just depends on his mood and the setting. If he's trying to be subtle, a kiss to your temple or along the ridges of your knuckles will do the trick just fine. If he's trying to be romantic, expect passionate kisses from his lips to yours. If he's being playful, your cheeks and jawline are a lovely place to pepper kisses all over. As for receiving, Childe likes cheek kisses because he thinks they're a sweet gesture. He also enjoys your lips on his neck, as well as the space just below his ear.

L: likes and dislikes. | favorite and least favorite things about being in the relationship?

Childe's favorite thing about being in a relationship is having someone to return to. So often, he felt lonely traveling from place to place, returning only to find himself alone with no extensive emotional bonds. His siblings are usually far away, and it's not easy to see them often, so having you there to greet him feels like the greatest gift he could ever ask for. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Childe's least favorite thing about being in a relationship is the uncertainty of it all. Normally, the unknown thrills him, energizes him, leaves him craving more. . . But in this relationship, he would rather make it so that the both of you could feel stable at all times. Of course, that's not quite how interpersonal relationships work, and he'll just have to bear the storm as the both of you go along, —but at least he has you to lean on along the way.

M: mornings. | how do they spend mornings with their partner?

Childe isn't a morning person unless he needs to be. Sometimes he's there, sometimes he isn't. . . With someone like him, it's complicated sometimes, and you just have to roll with the punches. When he is there beside you, it takes him forever to wake up, and even longer to actually get out of bed. At this point, he's mastered the art of tricking you into laying with him for "just five more minutes" —which can blend into hours if you're not careful. His groggy voice is so enticing, and he's so warm, it's hard to resist.

N: nicknames. | what do they call their partner?

Childe tends to stick to the basics when it comes to terms of endearment. "Babe" is the most common one he uses, with an occasional "honey" thrown into the mix.

O: out of character. | what is something people would be hard pressed to believe they do/enjoy in a relationship?

Childe sometimes gets sentimental out of nowhere. You'll find him sitting up in bed at three in the morning, thinking way too much, or you'll find him sitting outside on random afternoons completely lost in his thoughts. It's not super common, maybe once every month or so, and having you to talk to helps him through it. He's embarrassed about that side of himself though, so it's best to not mention it once it's passed.

P: pda. | do they like public displays of affection? if so, what types?

Childe follows your lead on that. If you're open to it, he's not opposed. Nothing super intense, —just some small gestures here and there for the most part, but leave it to him to have his arm around your shoulders wherever you go.

Q: quirk. | what is something they do that their partner finds cute or endearing?

Childe squints at things he doesn't understand. It's really cute and very endearing, but also a little funny. It's obvious it's just a habit and he doesn't quite know how to break it, but it amuses the absolute hell out of you.

R: rough times. | arguments? how often and in what manner?

Childe is stubborn, and that doesn't bode well for either of you sometimes. He's not very good at apologizing either, and he can be hard pressed to admit when he's wrong. Still, he's able to put his pride to the side for you more often than not, and arguments don't last more than a few days. He sucks at the silent treatment and hates to be given it even more. He'd rather you say something sarcastic to him than say nothing at all. Thankfully, you don't tend to argue often because the both of you are pretty easy-going. Most arguments are typically more filled with bitter sarcasm than anything else. It's very rare for him to raise his voice with you.

S: sensitive. | what's a sore spot for them that their partner should steer clear of?

Childe would be hard pressed to forgive you if you were to ever comment on his relationship with his family in a negative way. He already feels like he's letting them down, which is why he lies to them and insists that he's many things he isn't so they don't lose their positive image of him. Whatever you do, don't say he's a bad brother. . . That would be a hard wound to mend. This is a topic it's best to wait for him to approach you on first, by all accounts.

T: thrill. | do they need surprises in a relationship, or do they prefer a routine?

Childe doesn't mind thrill, —he loves it, actually. But he experiences it all the time doing what he does as a harbinger. If you can match his tempo and give him something new at every turn, he'll be sure to roll happily with the punches. However, if you prefer a simmered version of his lifestyle, he understands and respects that, and he has no qualms about diluting himself down to meet you were you are in that department. He's not picky.

U: unacceptable. | what is something they cannot tolerate in a relationship? what is something they would never do?

Childe could not sustain a relationship with someone who couldn't respect his family. Being with Childe means caring for and accepting his siblings especially, —so that's something to really keep in mind. On the flip side, Childe would never stifle his partner, whether it be socially, physically, emotionally, creatively, etc. He knows how much he values his own sense of freedom to choose his own route, and he wants the same for you.

V: vanity. | how concerned are they about their looks? are they insecure about them?

Childe does care about his appearance, but not to the point of being vain. He might make jokes about how handsome he is if he spots himself in reflective surface or something, and he might make little comments here and there, but when it comes down to it, he values a million and one things over how he looks. Tell him he's handsome every now and again though, and watch him light up. It feels good to hear that every once in a while!

W: wild card. | random headcanon?

Childe is willing to sing/hum a song to help his partner fall asleep, and would do so in a heartbeat if asked. He especially likes doing it when you're curled up in his arms like a kitten and he knows you can feel the soft vibrations from the back of his throat as they trickle down to his chest where your head rests.

X: xoxo. | how often do they hug/kiss their significant other?

Childe's love language is often physical. He prefers kisses to hugs, but delights in either, and likes it when you breathe in his scent when he holds you close to him. Hugs are a bit rarer than kisses though, although he'd never deny you the luxury. Childe kisses you often, especially right after returning from something work-related. Most times that he greets you, it's with a kiss of some kind, be it forehead, cheek, or a peck on the lips.

Y: yearning. | how do they feel when their partner is away?

Childe will survive, but often does so begrudgingly. He would much prefer to not be so far away sometimes, but duty calls, and he must answer. His souvenir buying is one way he expresses that without having to say all the mushy words himself. Childe thinks about you a lot when the two of you are apart and takes a great deal of comfort from knowing you're still under the same stars as he when you're not physically together.

Z: zzz. | how do they sleep with their partner? how do they sleep alone?

Childe sleeps better when you're beside him. He's not positive on why that is but has boiled it down to the comforting feeling of your warmth. He's a cuddle bug, —likes to be close to you even while he sleeps, and his preferred sleeping position is you draped all over him, legs entangled, face on his chest or in the crook of his neck while he simply rests on his back. When he sleeps alone, it tends to be less refreshing, but he still tends to lay on his back, although he might switch to a side on occasion if his back is aching.

Since I've been in this fandom for about *checks calendar* 7 months??? damn time flies, I think I should start making some discussion posts. Long time ago, I made a post for my thoughts on ships in the Gorillaz fandom, so why not do that again but with Lupin? I think I'll have an easier time since the main characters are all consenting adults that aren't related to eachother, so I have no disgusting ships to contend with.

I'll put the small disclaimer that all of this is opinion only and should only be taken as such. I don't have anything against any of the ships mentioned (since nothing crosses the line) or any of the people that ship them, so this is down to personal preference only. All righty, let's begin.

Polygang:

Right out the starting gate, we may get a bit controversial lol. Personally, I don't ship them all together, whether it be the OT4 or OT5. This is due to the fact that I don't think all of them are compatible with each other or even able to be in a relationship with multiple people. It's a cute idea though, and I love to see people's different interpretations of it.

LoopZoop:

This one is cute and kind of works canonically, even if it's only ever acknowledged as a joke. The way I see it, they may never have a traditional relationship (in this case, being lovers/maybe getting married), but there is definitely an undeniable chemistry between them. There is a clear dependency on eachother to fulfill a role in eachother's lives (a common theme you'll notice with Lupin's relationships here). Lupin needs Zenigata to give him the thrill of the chase, and Zenigata needs Lupin to give him a purpose in life. I personally think Zenigata is fantastic at his job and needs Lupin to give him a challenge and keep him from being bored. Plus, their dynamic is just so much fun!

FujiLup:

I love this ship for all the wrong reasons. Fujiko and Lupin are straight up bad for eachother, and yet only the two of them can make a relationship like that work beautifully. I often describe their relationship as a game or a dance. Fujiko askes Lupin to steal something for her, Lupin steals the thing hoping to get *something* out of it, Fujiko betrays him and leaves him with nothing. The benefits seem one-sided, but we've seen time and time again that Lupin expects (and sometimes down-right encourages) Fujiko to stab him in the back. To deviate from that would be breaking the rules of the game or ruining the rhythm of the dance. I think there's a similarity to LoopZoop where both parties are playing a role for eachother. For Fujiko, Lupin is someone she knows she can always come back to, no matter how treacherous her betrayal. He gives her a place she can call home. For Lupin, it's the thrill of a challenge. She rarely let's him get anything from her, so when she does give him a peck on the cheek or lips, it's that much grander of an award. That's my speculation on the subject anyway. I also want to add that, for how great they work together, it can all fall apart from something as simple as a change of pace. We saw the fallout of this happening in part 5, after they had gotten married and tried to being domestic. It's details like that that make this ship so interesting to me, I just love it!

LupGoe:

An interesting dynamic if nothing else. These two have chemistry but I don't think it's necessarily romantic. I think I view them more as rivals on friendly terms, more or less. They clearly do care about one another and go to great lengths to protect one another, but there is something else there. Lupin probably doesn't have any particularly strong feelings about their youngest member, but Goemon does seem to want to pick fights with him the most. The inner workings of Goemon Ishikawa XIII's mind deserves a post all of it's own for how complex a character he is, but I'll try to give an abridged version. I think he struggles a LOT with being "the best", and working under Lupin has maybe bruised his ego a bit. It's something he can lock away for only so long before the feeling flares up again and boils over (part 5 once more shows this happening and it is masterfully done!). In other words, I think there's a passion there, but these two have a lot to work out before they could even consider romantic feelings.

JiGoe:

Ok here's where people are really going to hate me lol. I don't really ship them. Like, at all. I don't know what it is but they just don't really have all that much chemistry to me. The closest they get to being compatible is part 2, with how much they play off of eachother. Sadly, we don't really see this relationship in any other part of the franchise (or if we do, I haven't seen it). If anything, I think their relationship is more brotherly, Jigen being the older brother of the gang and Goemon being the younger brother. I think he does look up to Jigen a lot and likes having him around, and I think Jigen has a lot of respect for Goemon and appreciates what he brings to the team, but I don't think there's much past that. Sorry y'all.

FujiGoe:

I LOVE this ship! I think these two are super cute together. TWCFM is what originally sold me on the idea, one of the writers REALLY liked the idea of Goemon having a big ol crush on Fujiko and it was fucking adorable (even if she was like "mmkay😐" in the series lol). There actually isn't many canon moments to support the ship, at least not outright, but there's a lot to speculate on from what we know about the characters. We know that they are fairly good friends and, should it come down who he prefers to work with, he's going to pick Fujiko at least over Lupin lol. We also know that Goemon is not interested in having sex. Whether that's due to his training or personal preference is up to speculation. But automatically that is a huge difference for Fujiko with any other man she's been with. (This also deserves it's own post but abridged version once more) Fujiko is often placed into the role of sexy femme fatale, to the point where she just kind of expects to be treated like that. Hell, whether he means to or not, Lupin also pushes her into that category. So it has to be refreshing to have someone like Goemon, who she knows likes her, to treat her with respect and spend time with her without expecting (or wanting) anything in return. I think it's a relationship that could work out long term if we ever got a chance to explore it further.

ZeniGoe:

I'm mostly adding this for completion's sake. They don't really interact much to determine if they even have chemistry. I think they probably have a begrudging respect for one another, but that's about it...next!

FujiZeni:

(I'm guessing at these ship names, which should speak to their popularity lmao) Meh. The only time we really saw these two interact was in TWCFM and that whole thing was yikes. Zenigata barely qualifies as Zenigata in the series in my humble opinion (and idc about the manga 💅). And anytime these two do interact in the original series, it's mostly out of necessity so...next!

JigZeni:

Here we go! This one may only live in the realm of speculation, since again these two don't interact all that much (Zenigata is really laser-focused on Lupin huh?), but we can get something from what we know about the characters. I don't know if Zenigata would be all that into Jigen, but I reckon Zenigata fits Jigen's type to a T (if all those exes we've seen are to be believed). If things were different and Zenigata wasn't a cop hellbent on throwing them all in jail, he would probably try his luck. I've also read a fic or two where they get together out of mutual pining for Lupin, and b o y that's fun to unpack.

FujiJig:

It's really hard to place how exactly I feel about this ship tbh. On one hand, the dynamic they have is usually one of my favorite type of ships (anyone that knows me from Gorillaz knows that I'm a huge Russdoc shipper). On the other hand, I have never seen two characters more repelled by eachother lmao. Like even when they're being nice to eachother, I think the idea of being romantic disgusts them on a deep visceral level. And honestly? Good for them! I actually like that they can get along and not be into eachother. I think that's a trope that has been done to death and it's nice to just see them be (sort of) friends. I also believe that Jigen is 100% gay. I know that's something that is open to interpretation in the canon (whether he's gay or bi I mean, because he sure as fuck ain't straight), but I see a lot of myself in him and how he handles relationships, and I'm gay so yeah :) Basically, these two have sibling vibes more than anything, can't stand eachother but really do care about the other deep down. Tell ya what though, I do like the idea of them fighting over Lupin. I prefer it to be a friendly competition between them though, rather than anything with actual visceral.

JigLup:

Gee take a guess lmao. Honestly though, these two are my OTP. They have so much chemistry and compatibility, it's kind of shocking! Obviously, nothing has ever been outright stated, and I highly doubt anything ever will be stated, but there's a lot between them that is hard to read as just platonic. The cigarette lighting, the fierce loyalty and faith they have in eachother, the palatable JEALOUSY Jigen has anytime Lupin so much as looks at a woman. Like, how exactly are we supposed to take this? There's also the fact that Lupin admitted Jigen is "the most stable thing in his life" and holy shit if that isn't a significant role to assign to someone, especially for someone like Lupin. Honestly, I can talk all day about these two, but I wouldn't be saying anything that hasn't already been said a million times. It's a great ship and these idiots clearly are in love with eachother.

I like Yata, but he hasn't been around long enough for me to nail down his personality or his chemistry with the gang. Feel free to discuss with me if you'd like.
