Alright with all the great discussion today around Ed telling Stede in s2e5 "I never apologized for jack shit" when we literally saw him do that in s1e4, here are my thoughts on possibilities to explain this. I think any configuration of these explanations is possible and one does not negate the others

This is just a consistency error. someone goofed in the writer's room

Ed naturally apologizes very easily and genuinely when he fucks up, and does it so immediately and instinctively that he doesn't really remember it and considers it on a different level than his performative YouTuber apology

Feeling forced to apologize, especially for a situation in which he was doing so terribly mentally and cannot really be held accountable for his actions in the same way (not saying it's an excuse, but it's a different level than if he'd just been doing it for fun) is making him Very Uncomfortable and he's just in a weird headspace rn

This is another case where Ed's self-perception is skewed. He thinks Blackbeard was the type of guy who would never apologize for shit and assumes it's actually true because often his self-image begins and ends with I Am Bad

On a related note, Ed is trying to further distance himself from Blackbeard. He's already talking about how he's not the captain right now, and this is another way for him to draw a line and say he's not Being Blackbeard anymore, and the proof is in how he just made this big public apology

This is the same conversation where Ed looks two seconds away from creaming his onesie over Stede's captain voice so it might be flirting tactic. "heheh nooo I never used to apologize for shit. oh noo i'm so naughty. what are you gonna do about that Captain. are you going to need to discipline your naughty boy haha"

Happy 1st Birthday Jangles!!

This post was originally going to be a humongous comic filled with lore, goofs, and even a bit of angst? 👀 And then have a funny/wholesome ending. Just like Bibi’s birthday comic.

But.. I ran into a problem. I didn’t know what to get for Jangles.

For Bibi’s present it was obvious what to get him. He wanted a real friend. Bringing Jangles to life was perfect and really tied the whole comic together.

But Jangles? What does he want? 

I wracked my brain for days. And when I finally thought of an idea? I only had 8 days left to make it happen. Sketch the comic out on paper, sketch it again in digital, line it, color it, backgrounds, dialogue.. I also had to make the actual present so that its picture could be used in the comic. All while having a very busy schedule for this week AND while working on Moon Malfunction..

I thought I could pull it off. So I got to sketching right away.

The comic would start with me in a big black blob. Locking myself away to try and get this project done as fast as possible. You know, like a total drama queen XD

Bibi and Jangles break in, and Bibi tries to talk to me but I ignore him. Meanwhile Jangles goes over to this goopy present by the wall. The present has a tag with Jangles name on it. As he goes to open it I do a spoopy jump scare and tell him not to.  Jangles and I then proceed to go back and fourth. “Why not?” Because its not good enough yet. “I’m sure its fine, what is it? What’s it for?” I cant tell you what its for because its not that day yet. “What is that day? And why cant we know about it?” “BECAUSE, its a S E C R E T-”

Bibi then says I need a break. I tell him I cant because I’m running out of time. I tell him that it needs to be posted on a specific day and that it has to be perfect but I don’t know what to do..

Jangles then deadpans “Its my birthday isn’t it?”

“...Yes. It is.”

“Okay? So what? I get wanting to post it on the day. But why all this pressure for the perfect gift?”

I explain that Bibi got a big special comic for his birthday. It had all the bells and whistles and it had the perfect gift. Jangles. And I wanted to do the same for him. I explained that the problem though was I haven’t really written enough of Jangles character to know what he would want.. I then wrote for Jangles response to be,

“Well what I dont want is you stressing yourself out over me.”

..I stopped sketching the comic at that point. I realized that I was stressing myself out way too much over this comic. It was 1 in the morning at that point. I was already pushing myself so hard to get this done on time and make it perfect that all the fun was just zapped right out of it. 

But I still worried a bit. I care about Jangles as my character and I wanted to do something cool for him. I wanted to post this at midnight on the dot, but that would require me to stay up until then when I’m still wiped out from the day before.. I also still wanted to get him a cool present.. But again I figured Jangles wouldn’t want me to stress over this “big comic” and “special gift” stuff.  So I just settled for a break. 

This entire post was prepared early, and posted when ever I was awake enough to post it. All the days beforehand I spent just taking my time with Moon Malfunction and focusing on my schedule. And on the day I’m posting it, I plan to draw nothing. Just relax and take a break from everything. I’ll get back around to all my projects tomorrow.

I think a post with minimal effort and day of no Tumblr, is probably exactly what Jangles would have wanted. So Happy Birthday Jangles! And thanks for the day off! XD

1. I agree, first of all, and fully get what you mean! I also believe Blue is simply a natural leader.

We know how it was for Red (rise). The movie showed us clearly what he thought and I wouldn’t change that, honestly.

“Red was never irritated at Blue’s skills, just at how he used them. Now… I’m just proud.”

I think Leo (12) would be mostly proud too, although it wouldn’t change the fact that she’d be irritated at how easy leading seems to be for Blue, because come on - all these years of trying and then some punk comes in and just does it with a smile…?

It would make him a little sad somewhere deep inside, too. How does Blue make it seem fun, meanwhile he’s always seen as lame and boring as a leader? It would all change after some time tho, since we know Blue isn’t all that confident and it’s mostly the great acting skills helping him look so easy going. After Leo would realize that (post invasion especially, I think) he’d just try to help him out with it all.

Just a bit of a personal thought, but I have grown to deeply dislike how social media, with its' competitive algorithm and need to have a perfect performance, is often giving people a really wrong idea of what is it actually to do art.

Most times, artists are rewarded by posting only their best work: A badly performing post in places like Instagram may affect how well your next post performs. It also prefers you to post finished pictures, very presentable sketches, that kind of stuff. Which is rarely the bulk of an artists' work. Even speedpaints have been chewed down into palatable videos barely reaching 15 seconds. Tiktok and Instagram reels prefer extremely short videos, and speedpaints are mostly just few (sparkles) aesthetic (sparkles) shots of minuscule parts of the process.

And all of that, I've found, gives people this really weird image of what is art actually like. A lot of starting artists grow to make idols out of bigger ones, thinking that these people can only create perfect pieces effortlessly, but that's not how it works. Very far from that. It's mostly that artists that keep active social media and have grown to know the game, know that showing the rough parts of art is not what gets you favoured by the algorithm.

I've been thinking about this ever since I saw a video on twitter of a fairly long speedpaint for what you usually see in social media, I think 4 minutes long, where the person redrew portions of the sketch up to five times. And a lot of people mentioned it was enlightening to see the struggle, to see that even a competent artist sometimes will struggle doing a little phone cord for an hour.

I think that's something I have kind of experienced, too. I'm not a big artist, but a lot of people have mentioned they find me intimidating still, up until they know me on Discord or something and realize I'm just a goof like any other. Up until I mention a face refused to work for 2 hours and I gave up, or how I randomly keep learning new basic functionalities in my drawing software of choice. And I think that's crucial to share too: Art is not a linear road! It isn't a smooth trip! You'll fail again and again and sometimes will end up going back to a previous point, then take another path. Sometimes you render a whole drawing and decide it looks bad so you start over. Sometimes you realize the lines came out wonky as hell and end up redoing it. Sometimes you gave a character 6 fingers or forgot people have eyebrows. It happens! And it's part of what making art is!

I mentioned this on Twitter- I rarely have visible proof of these struggles, but for an Artfight drawing (where I am trying to be speedy), I struggled with a cloak. For long. I made a thumbnail, I made a sketch, realized the cloak didn't work out, so I redrew it over and over again. I deleted most of the discarded sketches, but here's a few of the things that survived.

And like, I'm tired of not talking about this! I'm sad that people think they're failing because their art process isn't as smooth as it could be! So, yeah: I guess rant over, but I just have been thinking about this a bunch lately. If you'd like, do please feel free to reblog or share in replies any similar situations, struggles and flops. I think it could help people to realize how this is actually just a natural part of the process.

I once posted an incorrect quote of drunk teenage Ellie (like 15–16) drawing on Joel's forehead with a highlighter, and when he asked what she was doing, she said, "Highlighting you." and he chuckled, "Why?" and she looked at him with those beamy, watery eyes and silly smile, "Because you're important."

I think that sums it all up. I've always seen Ellie as this goofy, bubbly kid when drunk. Wanting to hug everyone around her just because she feels happy and she needs to infect (oops, pun intended) everyone around her. I think she's silly and even funnier than usual. Her tongue's not listening to her, and she mostly just ends up sluring most of the words and then giggling about it.

Adult Ellie is probably not THAT silly (because adult Ellie knows things that younger Ellie didn't know yet), but she surely still has that goof in her, especially if she's around people who make her feel good. Like Dina, Jesse, or even Eugene. Other kids most likely love drunk Ellie; she trying to play hide and seek with them and then getting caught in something else, forgetting she's supposed to find them. Like, in the middle of a meaningful conversation with Dina, "Oh, shit!"... "What?"... "I forgot I was supposed to find them."... "Who?"... "The kids, we were playing hide and seek." while the kids are already in their beds, probably.

All I know is that I would love to spend time with drunk Ellie. She must be so fun to be around when drunk. (before her tragic destiny)

In a beginning I was angry, when Ford drew himself and Stan mounted in the Stan O'War II. I was like... "He's so controlling he already pitched how he wanted them to look in the adventure?". Until, recently, where I finally some headcannons regarding that drawing:

The first is that maybe is a goof, since the Journal 3 came after the series finale. So maybe the staff ignored the detail, otherwise Stan and Ford would had wearing their regular outfits mounted in the original Stan O'War.

The second is that since it was never explained how long takes Ford to draw the drawings of his journal. Maybe he drew the picture until he and Stan got what they needed for the adventure, this means he threw the Journals, not the day Dipper and Mabel left back to Piedmont, but the day before he and Stan sailed across the sea. This makes more sense, since look at the Stan O'War II, I bet this was drawn after getting the gear for their stuff.

The third is that since this comes before when they burn the Bill stuff, exists a high chance that Stan saw that drawing and when Ford got embrassed, because the journals are private for him, maybe he liked how he drew him and rolled on with it.

Or maybe Mabel got to see the drawing in process and gave Ford some pointers in how her great uncles would look at the sea, since she knows about fashion.

The fifth is that this picture was drawn after they were so excited to sail across the sea, that maybe when they were at a store to buy new outfits... it happened like that comic from @demico-art, where Stan and Ford were trying outfits and Ford suggested to Stan to try the beanie and there the imagination popped... I mean, after all, Ford dresses like a scientists or something since science is his aestethic, while Stan dresses like an old-school sailor, more like a tough man.

As for their faces, maybe that's how they were posing actually when they got their outfits... Ford is a dork and of course he draw himself as a brave man, but maybe Stan, couldn't hide his joy and happiness and after everything Stan went through in his life, maybe Ford wanted to capture that happiness face that Stan had when they were getting the outfits. Notice how while the poses are similar, their expressions aren't quite the same as the photo when they were children.

I don't know what do you think? But now I have these headcannons regarding that picture.

I mean. It's just a drawing, and it's really not that deep.

Additionally, the Journals were canonically thrown into the Bottomless Pit. So it's before they set sail (the entry is dated August 29).

It's just a way of showing that Ford's excited to spend time with Stan again now that they've reconciled.
