So I finished RoW yesterday and will start WaT tomorrow. I am very nervous because minor cosmere implications that seem to exist. This is my first piece of the cosmere so we'll see where I go next year. That is not the point however-

The point is that I know I have a habit of flipping forward in bigger books. Anything over lets say 600 pages is bound to have slow parts that send my stupid little brain into screaming "Bored!" and urging me to just look at like one page near the end. Or maybe three.

I thought I would win against this by binder clipping or rubber banding each part of the book - as Stormlight has been a five part with interludes formula.

*incorrect buzzer noise*

I open the book to read the dedication and the table of contents. And Sanderson has split this book into each of the 10 days with mixed in interludes. (and an epilogue and a POSTLUDE which Worries me).

I guess I can split it into thirds rubber banded and then binderclip the shit out of that 10th day and later so I don't ruin it for myself.

Anyway. Happy reading to me. This is the first book I read without any incidental spoilers and I'm glad but also miss my safety blanket knowledge of who makes it.

Liveblogging Dracula Daily - May 12

Brought to you on June 26th. Yeah, I've fallen really behind, but I'm gonna try to just straight-through all of these missed entires tonight so anybody who's really following these uh... have fun with the rapid succession. Anyway, here's the entry! From what I remember this one has wall-crawling

Always good to start with facts, and better to separate them from your own memories/opinions. Objectivity is a virtue. Wait he spends all day reading and then all night talking? Jonathan I'm begging you get some sleep, you desperately need it

So Dracula is asking a bunch of questions. Question 1, can someone in England have multiple solicitors? Answer 1, yes, you can have it sounds like as many as you want, but only one can be working at a time. That's all understood so Dracula then asks if he can have more than one for like... specialty jobs.

Oooh, an example! Ok, so he asked for Jonathan's help because he doesn't live in London so that only Dracula's needs would be served... sure. And so he wants to know if he can get another solicitor to help shipping things to different areas where those other solicitors would live so it's more efficient. I guess that makes sense? Efficiency 100

And apparently there's a Solicitor Code of Conduct that says that... son of a Jesus what do these words mean I feel like I'm translating Shakespeare... the client can have one solicitor who can then direct other "local" solicitors to do local things, and the client doesn't have to do anything. Am I understanding correctly???

Ok so Dracula wants to direct his own solicitors and starts asking about paperwork and forms, and apparently he might make a really good solicitor (how many flipping times am I gonna have to type the word "solicitor")

Awww, he's so alone. And he's gonna be there for another month? Yeesh. "My needs only were to be consulted" selfish prick! This man needs to get married to his amazing fiancee!

Yeah, still a prisoner. I forgot that like... he's really not here by his own will anymore. And Dracula the master manipulator over here telling him to keep things secret and straight-up LIE to people that he's doing fine. Sharp teeth!

Spying on his mail is either gonna be a really smart move or a really stupid one, but considering how Jonathan seems like one of the brainier horror protagonists I'm guessing it's a smart one

Ok I'm gonna note this just for posterity, one letter is for Samuel F. Billington, No. 7, The Crescent, Whitby (copy-paste works wonders), the second one is for Herr Leutner, Varna, the third is for Coutts & Co., London, and the last one is for Herren Klopstock & Billreuth, bankers, Buda-Pesth. I'm guessing these are all other solicitors

Again this scenery is so pretty when he describes it, I almost wish this was illustrated just so I could see it. I'm sure people have drawn passages like this, maybe I could look into those later

Sorry shippers, I gotta click the fast-forward a few times here, hope I don't miss any important bits. Did by sheer coincidence pause on "no legacy is so rich as honesty." Interesting.

Gun straight in with a clearly practiced right to the jaw. What a lovely family dynamic. Pete's like I am being tortured in a whole other way now, fun!

Gun doesn't want Porsche hurt...? This is the most we've seen of Gun all season, and his overt violence is a sharp contrast to Korn. Pete obviously isn't supposed to leave that room alive even before the gun is handed over, and he is side-eyeing Gun so fucking hard ah, I think I see the root of the problem here.

Vegas arranging for Pete to have "vacation" is certainly A Thing. Grandma appears to have total knowledge of Pete's job situation. Vegas is so wonderfully awful, as in I am in awe of how this character is constructed. The camera angles are constantly shifting and off-kilter in this scene.

Kinn actually checked up, too. Interesting. Trying to be a better boss these days? And he wants to let Porsche leave like Chay wants. This is the most relaxed outfit we've seen him in since the date, too. Korn looks way more distressed about this development than he did about getting Ken's head delivered in a gift box; Khun has Opinions. Kinn, you set yourself up for this, but well done with the declaration. Khun is so fucking delighted for his little brother.

OMG everybody listening in at the door. Discipline has gone straight to hell around here since Porsche joined. Arm is the best. Chan why is your gun drawn wtf.

Porsche is not sure this is a good thing. That's smart of him. All of his friends are cute though.

Interesting what they did with the lighting here to establish visual continuity with the minor house dungeon. Ah, the (in)famous hedgehog. Bizarre pet choice.

Porsche what? The number of times now that I have watched a scene in the show and said, "I thought that post about this was a JOKE" is fairly high now.

Back to Kim, still on the trail, trying to figure out who killed Porsche's parents, thinking that they are a link that might explain why his dad is so invested in this guy. We learn here that Porsche's parents had money and the details of the accident have been redacted.

Chay's got a new thousand-yard stare since the kidnapping. Poor kid. So much money and y'all don't have any therapists on staff. Real talk going on here, about time. (My chess theory, Chay is Porsche's king piece. He's in Korn's house now, danger zone.) And Porsche you've almost gotten killed like six times in this job, what is this bullshit.

On the one hand, Chay has a good point. Anything happens to Porsche, wtf is going to happen to Chay now? On the other hand, Porsche has been forced to be parent and provider and everything to his brother for most of his life. Any parenting book will tell you that parents need to keep something in reserve for themselves; Porsche deserves his own life and his love.

A choice looms. With Porsche's reply, this is the first time the narrative has raised the possibility of a third way, a solution that doesn't leave anyone out.

And skip right to Vegas and Pete for the thematic emphasis: "Do you think you can choose?" "I'm not choosing." Yet another lens on the issue -- what happens to choice if you reject the validity of the paradigm? If one of the options isn't a choice at all? Shit's getting deep in this goofball show.

So let's switch to domesticity and Kinn's friends being menaces. (Didn't Kinn used to sleep with a gun?) Porsche is so not used to any of this, but you gotta love how they're basically married already. I'm glad he has Yok looking out for him.

Aaaand back to Gun winning "father of the year" wow. "Childhood's End" huh real subtle choice show. Gun you do realize he's gonna fucking kill you one of these days?

Love every second of Khun winning hearts and UH-OH I was wondering when this was going to drop. Chay's little world has just ended. (Maybe you would feel differently if you had seen how amazing he looked coming to your rescue? No, I suppose not.)

Vegas you're lucky he isn't dead already wtf do you usually not play with your toys this long.

Forgot to mention this earlier but I really love the jewelry choices for all the characters.

Never failing to make everything AS WEIRD AS POSSIBLE love you Vegas. This scene is hella compelling though. Bonding with your torturer over a shared history of child abuse, check.

We seem to be bringing the city views into more and more focus with these two? Honestly it's such a relief when things go well for a character.

WTF Gun do you stop by every day just to beat your son and then leave? This is getting even weirder. So Pete's going to try staying alive to see what happens? I'm more than a little surprised that they decided to make Vegas a reader. Just doesn't seem like he'd have the patience.

Kim still working and annoyed enough about all the dead ends that he's started throwing his family name at the problem. So it was Korn who had the accident hushed up. Doesn't it suck when you're right about something.

Mary Plays Pokemon Gaia - Part V: A bit more of earthquake plot, Ranger town, fourth gym and big city gangs

More Twitter archiving. I'll be honest, I'm not too satisfied with this later-half of Gaia twitter liveblogging and there's not much I can do to improve it considering the lack of screenshots, but I think it still has its value.

Just to give a clearer timeframe of how much I dragged my feet with this game: the stuff in this part was originally posted June 2022, while the update before this was October 2021.

Alright. this update might be a little shallow cause I played this stuff and screenshotted it but since I wasn't feeling too well I didn't comment at the time and took a break from the game. But I think I can still do a satisfactory short rundown:

Before I get back, a short summary of Pokemon Gaia: it's a FRLG romhack which aims to reproduce the feeling of official games rather than trying to do something "darker"/"maturer". Difficulty is slightly harder than an official game at some points.

It's a straightforward pokemon adventure to beat gyms, the league and some ecofascist villains. It features a whole new region, a pokedex up to gen 6 mons, XY mechanics (fairy type + mega evos) and some QoL updates (ex. skipping backtracking at certain plot points).

Last time I posted I had finished the third gym and did a short training session since gyms started getting a little rough. After that, I arrived on Valoon Town and immediately a tremor was felt, which prompts the local Rangers to investigate it.

You go to the area north, to a place called Nemesis Cave, and find another of those big painted ancient walls. The plot is still moving pretty slowly at this point.

The best part of this area gameplay-wise though is that it got a ton of Durants and is really fucking good to train. There is my Excadrill (...still crying over that calm nature) and a good level bump to Charmeleon.

Back to Valoon Town, some of the things the place offers:

- a blue shard move tutor; - a ranger base; - a bug catching contest where you can win even mega stones!!

And then there's the bug type gym. I'll be honest with y'all, I don't remember much how this fight went but I'm guessing Mega Beedrill as rough enough I had to resort to paralyzing. 😬 Mega evos should probably be expected in every gym too.

To get to the next town you need to cross a marsh and OOOOHHH LOOK AT THIS LUCKY EGG

There was a rival fight which I also don't remember well lol sorry. But maybe the lack of screenshots indicates this wasn't too hard. Feel sorry for the guy though. (The building above is a Battle Marsh - more on it later.)

Past the marsh, you get into Telmurk City where you have to deal with a small subplot involving a gang which threatens warehouse employees and whatnot. After beating them you get the Fly HM.

And this is where I'm at. This is the current team. Now that I have Fly I'll probably do some backtracking before exploring Telmurk and moving with the plot.

I was on Tumblr hiatus throughout most of 2021 and 2022, so y'all didn't get to see me liveblog Double Life and Limited Life (I'll have to dig up the doodles I posted on other platforms... I also did a ton of Naked and Scared and Skyblock doodles because... Imp and Skizz my beloveds <3), but I plan to reblog stuff to this blog too.

I've also got a shiny new Life fan series 'fic ready to go. It's called Dog's Life and it'll update Tuesdays. Is this the dawn of a new era where I actually post short chapters?? idk

At the moment I'm just planning the one 'fic since I don't have a lot of plans to mess with the world itself and all I really want to do is a character analysis 'fic about arranged marriages and consensual murder, but I'd love to write one nice 'fic for all my fandoms before I retire from 'fic writing someday, so here we go!

I do highly recommend giving 3rd Life [AKA Traffic Life Season 1] a chance if you haven't before because it's a lot of fun-- I feel like it has a similar vibe to my writing style which is very "large cast of characters," "relationship drama," "up and down emotional jolts," "domestic stuff," "fluff pivoting into angst," and "magical realism," so if you follow this blog and enjoy my other fanfics, maybe you'll like the Life series too.

Let's put it this way.

Marisha deliberately had Laudna put up Darkness in case Orym woke up he wouldn't see Laudna was doing something untoward. She did it so if he attacked, he would be at Disadvantage. In short, she served herself and honestly deserved every. single. hit. And Marisha herself was all for this and accepted what happened. Liam himself was not upset with Marisha but also had Orym act as he should have.

I say this as a huge Southern Gothic fangirl and someone who loves Laudna a great deal. You can love a character and not insist that the character was innocent when she clearly was not.

Let's change the dynamic. Laudna doesn't use Darkness. Orym wakes up to the burning, Laudna is backing slightly, he's "Ow, that hurt!" and Laudna would be "I was trying to wither those vines on that blade, not you."

He wouldn't have attacked her. He would have been "wait, what?" and they would have talked things out. He'd be upset that she didn't just wake him up initially. He'd be upset that she used a spell that hurt him but... he would not be attacking her. (He might have Seedling in his hand but he'd probably put it down after a tiny bit.)

Laudna knew what she was doing was wrong. This is why she put up the Darkness. That's why she used Spider Climb to go on the wall to try and escape him. And seriously, did she think she would have gotten away with this? If she devoured the blade, Orym would be waking up in the morning and be frantic looking for the blade. The group would possibly delay going to Eiselcross because someone deliberately snuck into their room and stole just that one blade, which means... someone with the Enemy knows who they are, where they are, and stole the blade for unknown reasons... maybe to bring back Otohan. All because Laudna was deceptive.

There was no scenario where this turned out well, except one where Laudna was open and honest and communicated with Orym about how she was quite uncomfortable with that blade and wanted it destroyed. And you know what? If she'd done that, in all likelihood the blade would be consumed and they'd be done with it.

Delilah wouldn't be fed, but the group would be whole.

2023 blog update !

Sooo happy new year everyone, and let's get into the thick of it, because I have a lot of words to spew out from my little tired brain ( i swear i started writing this at 4am, how's it past 6 already ? ). Beware long post...

I'm ditching the "sonic fandom" categorizing tag, most of my blog is sonic stuff so it doesn't really matter ( i'll change out the old tag on my old posts later when i remember... )

I wanted to change my url, cause i don't like what it stands for now, but it's what I'm credited as in the SWA zine and i don't wanna inconvenience them this late in the thing, so I'm gonna keep it for the time being. Maybe in a few months I'll change it ?

I kinda hate tagging my posts so i think i'm gonna stop using most of my tags when i'm reblogging, just doing my regular comments instead and content warnings if it needs it ( don't forget you can always ask to tag ! ), and of course, the reblog tag stays.

This doesn't mean I'm ditching the categorizing tags entirely though. I'm gonna try something. At every end of the month I'll go into the mass post editor and just correctly tag everything. ( I might still tag characters and fandoms the regular way for non-sonic stuff ).

I might reblog a little less. Or at least try to. The amount of stuff I usually reblog kind of overwhelms me ( sideblog will not be affected as it's a lot less pressure ).

No, see this is part of the reason I like doing this! I don't believe a SINGLE word I'm saying, at all. I suppose if I needed Friends to be deep for some reason, I might start believing my own bullshit. I'm not sure any of us are above it.

I want to remind you all, when you are listening to people talk about media/issues/whatever online, that some people are very verbally clever. Some people are very good at using language and jargon to construct an argument. Sometimes, this gets used in ways that aren't correct, or fair, or coming from a genuine place. When you see an argument about why something is good or bad or what it means online, I want you to think very critically about the argument that's being made. '

Now, this isn't to say if you see "Character x character/show/character aspect/political issue isn't good because y" and you believe character x character/show/aspect/political issue IS good, that you should toss it out of hand. That's the trouble here, is now we've sort of come to a work where we find people who are good at making the arguments we already believe, and using their words to try and shame or convince others. What I want you to do, even if you VOCIFEROUSLY AGREE, is take a moment to really reflect and think. Is this appropriately representing the truth, or is there another goal here*?

I've done it myself, because the online buzzwords and stylistic ways of casting? Easy as fuck for anyone with verbal skill. Easier still for anyone who's had training in persuasive writing, and there are a TON of people out there on twitter, on facebook, on tumblr, doing just that.

BEWARE OF THIS. I saw what I was doing, realized I was making REAL bad faith arguments to justify things I just...hated, and why they should be wiped off the fandom earth. I used the modern vocab of acceptability to fuck with what other people were doing, and it was shameful and is still embarrassing to me, but we get embarrassed because we do stupid shit so we don't do it again. There are a lot of people out there that NEVER have this realization, or don't care. It's about winning. It's about making something good, or bad, or deep, or shitty, and it is NOT coming out of a place of fairness or good faith.

Use your discernment, because every argument I made in this liveblog was 1000% bullshit but had just enough EDUCATION (not merit) behind it to start to sound plausible.

Beware people you agree with most of all. That's the honey its easy to get stuck in.
