Getting back into Danny Phantom (one of my fav childhood shows that I haven’t watched in YEARS) and realizing and understanding things that I didn’t understand when I was a wee child

To this day I still love the concept of the show (and the—albeit prolly unintentional—trans allegory to it) and now my understanding of it and the depth of the “I have to hide my true identity but not to protect the people I care about but to protect myself from THEM” is something I can appreciate way more and it’s such an underrated and fuckin cool yet messed up and heartbreaking trope and I aajsjsjsnshdbdhdhfjcjnfjfjffj

the public reaction to i saw the tv glow is like a perfect case study into how cis people take up queer spaces and unknowingly mock and enjoy trans suffering. sitting in the theater, i had a pit in my stomach the entire time. so many times, i would tear up and then someone else in the theater would laugh. and i wouldn’t cry because how would they look at me when the lights came back on? because they don’t see it. they don’t see the pain. they think it’s funny. i left the theater completely silent, not saying a word to my boyfriend and he didn’t say a word to me until partway into the drive home. the people around us immediately got to picking it apart, explaining what it all meant to each other, dumbing it down, making theories. cis people see the the movie, just like transness, as something to debate. a conversation. something to dissect because it makes them uncomfortable if they don’t understand it in their easily digestible way.

I'm not sure if y'all have addressed this already or not, so my bad if you have! I was just curious if the Lunar Boy cover was inspired at all by that one poster for the animated Disney Little Mermaid movie, with her on the rock silhouetted by the moon behind her! Or maybe just a happy coincidence? Either way, it's a very beautiful and cute cover!!

you're so right! The fairytale vibes of it all!! This one's a huge coincidence since for this cover we were actually pulling from an illustration by Max Prentis!

But it's funny that the final cover has a lot more in common with the Little Mermaid poster. I love that though, since Lunar Boy is very much a modern fairytale retelling and has a lot of similar themes to the Little Mermaid (one of my fav fairytales tbh).

It’s exactly what we mean when we say that transition and trans healthcare is necessary and lifesaving. Transition can mean the difference between simply being alive and actually being able to live.

Maybe this is obvious but I need people to talk about it more-- in Mag 47, The Distortion tells Jon "that is a real name" as a cryptic response to being called Michael, and that's followed up by "there is no such thing as a real name" no more than a few minutes later. Now while these statements are obviously contradictory, the part I want to call attention to is that The Distortion uses both of them to reject identity as much as possible. Jon almost accuses it of being Michael, and simply saying it's a real name is possibly the most passive response it could've given. It can't deny that it's Michael, but it certainly won't confirm it any more than necessary.

You could easily assume the contradiction is just purposeful nonsense that's meant to annoy Jon and show the deceptional nature of The Spiral (and I can't deny it succeeds at doing both of those things) but I will never get over how those lines make so much more sense as a whole if you recognize that Michael says both with the same goal of pushing away any identity Jon keeps attempting to assign it; rejecting the label of "Michael" in the most unpointedly pointed way possible.

im glad that instead of trying to change himself to be the person sonic wants him to be, nine fires back here and demands the recognition and respect he deserves as an individual separate from the one sonic knows. he’s done it repeatedly through both seasons and im ridiculously proud of this little 8-year-old for having the gumption and resilience to stand up to someone he clearly wants acceptance from bc that’s an extremely hard thing to do at any age. but nine is such a strong kid and he knows it’s his right to be treated as the person he is and not the person sonic wants him to be.

and i do like that we see a look of realization and regret on sonic’s face here— it says a lot. namely that sonic hasn’t meant to undermine nine’s identity. sometimes you just hurt ppl without meaning to and sonic has clearly done that by being so dismissive of the fact nine is a person wholly disconnected from the tails he knows. he even goes so far in this moment as to try and make nine feel bad for not being more like his tails.

that’s a cruel and manipulative thing to do and i think we’re seeing sonic begin to understand that he really hurt this poor kid without realizing it.
