What annoys me about Jackie's story in That 70s Show is that in the later seasons she literally had the worst family situation out of all the main characters, yet it was treated as a joke. When Edna and Bud abandoned Hyde it was a serious storyline. When Midge abandoned Donna, there were so many episodes about how Donna is dealing with it, even though she wasn't left alone by any means- she still had her dad and Kitty was willing to be the surrogate mom from the beginning. But when Jackie's dad goes to prison, her mom packs her suitcase and runs away to Mexico and she is left all alone, the point of the storyline is how Hyde can't console her (which is dumb, because Hyde was shown consoling her before). It takes like 10 more episodes for Bob to take her in after she is left alone with no parents at 16. Then a season later her mom randomly comes back and again the point is not that "she's a terrible mother that abandoned her daughter in tough times", the point is "look how hot she is". Jackie is the only one mad at her and I don't even remember a single person telling her that her feelings are valid, everyone is just like: "yeah, but she is your mother and she is hot so you have to forgive her". Even Hyde, who literally went through the same things himself! It's so frustrating.
This right here… and it’s part of the reason I resent Donna, she was supposed to be Jackie’s best friend and was very insensitive to her feelings. I say this a lot: Jackie never truly had anyone which makes her story the saddest. The gang never excepted her as a valuable member- she was always just “___ boyfriend” and never her own person, the cheerleaders were all fake, her own parents didn’t nurture her- that’s part of the reason she has a bitchy exterior (same way Hyde uses zen to protect himself). I feel for Jackie, I really do. She’s beyond complex and I believe the people that don’t feel for her truly don’t get her. Lots of T7S characters are so complex but since it’s a sitcom, they die it down a lot when the potential of these characters is through the roof.

Haha damn need to put Jackie in situations involving their rage cause actually it's a big part of their character! I think their relationship with rage is super interesting!! But also he actively downplays it so naturally he doesn't want to lol. Gonna look for anger or murder related starters to REBLOG on my lunch break

We do NOT give Jackie Tyler and Mickey Smith their props for their character growth in the Parting of the Ways. Rose is absolutely amazing, an absolute ferocious beacon of hope and stubbornness and bravery in the finale, the absolute reason why the Doctor lives and the world is saved and an equal hero to Nine, but she has a moment of doubt. A moment of hesitancy.
And Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler step in and help her save the day. Both Mickey and Jackie give up on their idea of Rose and their hatred of the Doctor and help her pull open the TARDIS. Even within this one episode we see them struggle with their feelings and decide to put them aside and help do this because Rose is right- this is a better way of living your life.
Doctor Who is about ordinary people making extraordinary decisions and making themselves extraordinary and this doesn't just apply to official companions (who I love with all my might)- it applies to the people they love, too. We see it over and over again in Davies' era, with Jackie and Mickey and Sylvia and Tish and Wilfred and Francine and Harriet Jones and every one-off character as well, from Lynda-with-a-Y to Jabe to Gwyneth to Novice Hame to McDonnell to Sally to Chantho to Nancy to all the rest.
Doctor Who is at its strongest when the story is focused on the strength of the bleeding, beating heart of humanity (and character in general, in its non-humans), when the characters drive the story, when at the end of the day you understand why, for all of the world's flaws, the Doctor comes back over and over again because of people like this- not just his companions, but the Jackies and Mickeys and all the rest of the world.
