Journey to Myself - Help Get This Manga about Gender Identity Licensed
Tumblr media
Over the past decade, publishers like YenPress and SevenSeas have allowed us to see a greater diversity in manga titles that get licensed. Both in particular have sizeable LGBTQ+ libraries which have led to some incredible works being available in English, such as Adachi and Shimamura and Our Dreams at Dusk.
Unfortunately, many LGBTQ+ stories still remain unavailable in English. One such manga is ā€œOre ga Watashi ni Naru made.ā€
Summary:
Ore ga Watashi ni Naru made (roughly ā€œUntil He Becomes Her,ā€ ā€œThe Girl He Would Become,ā€ or ā€œUntil I Become Meā€) is a ā€œgender-benderā€ manga written and illustrated by Satou Hatsuki. It is a coming-of-age story focused on Fujimiya Akira, a young second-grade boy who bullies the girls at school before waking up one day as a girl due to a rare affliction. The boys in class immediately turn against and abuse Akira, while the girls he once harassed shun him completely.Ā With no friends left at school, Akira is forced to move away and live as a girl. Initially resistant to her new life, a budding friendship leads Akira on an emotional journey towards growing up, forming bonds, and learning to be kind while understanding who she wants to be.
For those unaware, ā€œgender-benderā€ is a genre of fiction wherein a character, through some means ā€“ bodyswapping, magic, etc. ā€“ becomes another gender. Many of these works do not depict the trans experience per se, but are based in the perspective of tying gender to sex and play around with it in more crude or simplistic terms. They can play into foibles like gender essentialism, but also offer a space to break down societal ideas of identity. As such, some trans people may sometimes see their experiences reflected in these works, while at other times finding them distasteful or overly simplistic in their portrayal of gender and identity.
OreWata is, despite its inciting incident, very grounded in its exploration of gender identity. Early on in the story Akira is told that if she wishes to return to being a boy, she could start puberty blockers and later on use hormones to transition. The acknowledgement of not only gender dysphoria but medical interventions to alleviate that dysphoria are rare in stories in general, and a refreshing inclusion in a series such as this. As Akira adapts to her new life and grows into adolescence, she learns joy in being called cute, wearing skirts and dresses, and being able to express her emotions more vividly with her friends. Meanwhile, she also struggles to tell her mother about these feelings, afraid of her family's expectations and uncertain how they'd react to her desire to remain a girl. These aspects end up feeling deeply resonant with a trans experience, and we wish for more people to be able to read it.
How to help:
YenPress can be contacted via either Twitter/X (@YenPress) or via Email ([email protected]).

If using Twitter, be sure your message is being sent via a public account. Include a picture of the volume 1 cover as attached above. Additional anecdotes help, but are optional. (Special thanks to BehindTheManga for base templates!)

Hello! Thereā€™s an LGBTQ+ manga that Iā€™d really like to read, but itā€™s not licensed in English at all. Itā€™s called ć‚Ŗćƒ¬ćŒē§ć«ćŖć‚‹ć¾ć§ (Ore ga Watashi ni Naru made) by Satou Hatsuki. I would really like to see it in your catalog, if possible! @yenpressĀ
2. Contact via Email

Japanese Publisher: Kadokawa Shoten
Templates for Extra Messages
As an LGBTQ+ reader, I really appreciate your wide selection of stories highlighting experiences of those like myself. It is important to me that stories like this are accessible to as wide an audience as possible, and given the quality in your releases of other LGBTQ+ works like ā€œAdachi and Shimamuraā€ and ā€œI Want to Be a Wall,ā€ I believe your company would be a great fit for bringing this manga to overseas audiences.
I have a lot of transgender friends, so Iā€™m really interested in seeing more manga on the subject of gender identity. A friend recommended this story to me, but itā€™s only available in Japanese, so Iā€™m not able to read it. Iā€™ve enjoyed your other releases that play with gender in the past, such as ā€œMagical Girl Incidentā€ and ā€œMiss Savage Fang,ā€ so I believe your company would handle this manga with the care required for it to reach a wider audience.
This story has resonated strongly with me, but when I talked about it with some friends that seemed interested in reading it, we sadly found out that it had not yet been licensed in the US. I have read your releases of LGBTQ+ seriesā€™ including "Kiss and White Lily for My Dearest Girl" and enjoyed it, therefore I think you would handle this manga well too.
(Please change or add other works if there are other titles you feel strongly about, and expand messages if you have more to say. These are just examples, and we want to avoid spamming identical messages.)
3. SevenSeas Survey
Manga can be requested to SevenSeas via their monthly surveys available in the right sidebar on their website. https://sevenseasentertainment.com/Ā
Under ā€œWhat non-licensed *MANGA FROM JAPAN* would you like us to license and publish in English? Type it here,ā€ fill in with ā€œć‚Ŗćƒ¬ćŒē§ć«ćŖć‚‹ć¾ć§ (Ore ga Watashi ni Naru made) by Satou Hatsukiā€. Complete the survey, filling out the rest however you see fit.
How else you can help:
If you could share this post to your friends, especially other LGBTQ+ folks who might be interested in the manga and ask them to participate and share as well, it would be greatly appreciated! The important thing is that the publishers need to know thereā€™s an audience who really wishes to see this published in English, both so that we can support the creator and so that this story may reach a wider audience and get the love it deserves.
Thank you so much for even a small amount of help. We hope that with your support, we can see an overseas release for this story.

I saw the 3rd frame from this floating around lol.
This is a strip from the P4 Golden anime comic anthology. An anthology is an officially published collection of stories and art created by fans. For Persona, this means it has the Jack Frost logo on it and Atlus sold it as an official product. Since it's officially published, there will be some restrictions set (e.g. this anthology is all ages, no r-18), but otherwise it's anything goes.
So this is more or less an officially published shitpost comic lol. This particular comic is part of a series of 4 panel comics called "The Golden Cabbage Cop" by Naritama Saty where Adachi gets bullied repeatedly. This artist has also self-published Shuada books; it seems very bullying (affectionate) tbh lol.
This particular comic, "New Character", is Yu going to the Velvet Room and finding Adachi there instead of the new girl. The other strips after this continue on with this premise: Yu gives Adachi shit over how short Marie's skirt is on him lmao. And instead of dropping poetry, like Marie, Adachi drops stuff like his grocery shopping list (which has cabbage and beer on it, of course).
Adachi's antics in these result in Yu punching him and Adachi drops 3000 yen (a well-known meme for JP players and reference to him dropping 3000 yen for his boss battle in the PS2 game, tho it was upgraded to 10k in Golden). In the end, Marie makes vegetable art of Dojima and Adachi, then Yu also tries making vegetable art and manages to cast Vorpal Blade IRL and perfectly sculpt an Adachi figure out of a cabbage lmao. "Congrats on your new figure, Adachi!"
There's another anthology comic for the Golden anime that's purely Adachi centric and has more shitposting in it. Like. Adachi getting handcuffed to a cornstalk and Yukiko feeding the corn her curry to free him.

Headcannon;
In pokemon x persona
Adachi would be a dark (or bug type) user
Narukami would have normal type pokemon
Yosuke would have a multi type team ( frog theme)
Yukiko would be fire type
Chie fighting type
Naoto ice type
Kanji everyone thought would be electric type but surprisingly he has both fairy types and pink pokemon ( Kanji; what?! I look cute things do what!?)
Dojima would have rock type
Nanako would have the whole eeveelutions as her team
And teddie would have bear pokemon
I think it's so funny that you bring that up because I did a what-if persona users were pokemon trainer list years ago (before Scarlet and Violet even came out). I did the entire Arena Ultimax roster + Fuuka. It doesn't contain Dojima or Nanako because they are not persona users. Perhaps they could have something like a Bidoof as a pet, tho. Also, Kanji's cute pokƩmon is a pikachu that he evolved into a Raichu because he was bullied by the big competition trainer for wanting to be like Ash and not evolve it. My headcanon is that a lot of cuter pokemon are scared of him/don't want to be near him, and he attracts uglier pokemon, Raichu being his only cute one.
All the pokemon chosen are based on the characters' personality, persona, fighting style, and story/character arc. (You'll see that Junpei's team is a bit strange, but there's a good reason for a lot of those pokƩmon.) I did this list when I was extra fan of persona too, so I can't make a better one:
Yu: Pikachu, Luxray, Reshiram Toxtricity (Low Key form), Zacian, Katagami Yosuke: Crobat, Greninja, Chatot Politoad, Toxicroak, Toxtricity (Amped form) Chie: Crabominable, Hitmonlee,Ā  Galarian farfetch Lucario, Mienfoo, Hakamo-o Yukiko: Oricorio (Baile Style), Salazzle, Lurantis, Hatterene, Braixen, Cherrim Kanji: Electivire, Alolan Graveler, Thundurus, Machoke, Raichu, Scrafty Rise: Wigglytuff, Meloetta, Chuchmur Audino, Clefairy, Eevee Teddie: Teddiursa, Bewear, Beartic Pancham, Stufful, Darumaka Naoto: Celebi, Beedrill, Beautifly Orbeetle, Flygon, Scizor Adachi: Mimikyu, Gengar, Zekrom Zamazenta, Rotom, Sableye Marie: Castform, Cosmog, Celesteela Rayquaza, Solrock, Raikou Margaret: Arceus, Cobalion, Zygarde, Calyrex, Machamp, Zapdos Elizabeth: Eternatus, Lunala, Yvetal Uxie, Banette, Galarian M. Cherry Magic Episode 4 Review - You're A Wizard, Tsuge
As the first half of the episode has shown, Tsuge has become a wizard now. Like Adachi, he has gained the power to listen to peopleā€™s hearts. How will Tsuge use this to find a love interest? Well, he found one already. That was darn freaking fast. Who does he fall in love with? The cute deliveryman Minato.
Tumblr media
I think their ship name is called Tsugemina. Anyways, Tsugeminaā€™s portrayal in the live action is a bit exaggerated compared to the manga and anime (which are pretty much identical). In the live action, Tsuge is very dramatic when he falls for Minato and when he realized heā€™s in love, he actually bashes his head against a bookshelf. When I watched the live action, I thought that Tsuge was a bit of a weirdo, but reading the manga and watching the anime made me realize that the way Tsuge is portrayed here is more faithful as he is a stoic man by nature. While the Tsugemina section seems short, thatā€™s because the Tsuge chapters are pretty short in comparison to the main couple; there arenā€™t a lot too, so who knows when weā€™ll get another segment of them in future episodes.
I do like the Tsuge and Adachi scene. As Tsuge is a novice wizard, heā€™s unsure how to make use of the power, but for Adachi, the power has brought good things into his life; Tsuge even notices this too as Adachi has become a bit more talkative, especially when the topic revolves around Kurosawa. In the manga, this scene actually takes some time after the second Tsugemina scene as Adachi had mentioned that he read Tsugeā€™s new book and noticed the change in his usual heroine types as he added in a heroine with the exact same description as Minato, showcasing how down bad he is for this guy he barely knows (heck, he doesnā€™t even know his name until later on). Despite the changes, I do like the scene but I dislike the fact that Tsuge gets blocked from the chances he gets to talk to Adachi about the magic.
After Tsuge and Adachi meet up, the episode then shifts to Adachi being the focus character, which I think is a rather good way to transition. Adachi gets jealous for the first time when he sees a pretty lady talking with Kurosawa and starts getting insecure about himself. Despite his jealousy, he does realize that if he did get jealous of that woman, that means he does like Kurosawa in that way. I do like how he was fast to process that and accepted it right away. It sort of shows that even if he doesnā€™t have romantic experiences, heā€™s still mature enough to understand what love is.
Itā€™s kind of sad to see why Adachiā€™s so hesitant towards romance. I sort of get it. If I heard someone say that itā€™s impossible to date me because of the lack of experience, Iā€™d get insecure too. Iā€™m glad that Kurosawa exists to show that Adachi can be loved no matter how much he adverses romance. The part where Kurosawa comes over to his house was sweet; however, how the heck did he know his address? The way Kurosawa thought about how heā€™d cherish all of Adachiā€™s first was heartwarming. I legit stomped my feet in a giddy mood. Why is this anime so cute? Why are they so cute?
No worries, though. The pretty lady happens to be Kurosawaā€™s sister, Mari. Sheā€™s hilarious as she feels like a typical older sibling trying to pester her brother to get what she wants: to stay at Kurosawaā€™s place until her boyfriend apologizes to her. She even followed him to Adachiā€™s house via GPS. I do like how Kurosawa feels like a bullied little brother here. She is also good with words as she managed to convince Kurosawa to stay at Adachiā€™s house, to which his simp self accepts after fantasizing a domestic AU he conjured up in his mind. Haha, heā€™s such a simp.
Oh and uh, the voice actor trivia of the week is that Gen Sato, Minatoā€™s VA, only has done BL recently. Like out of the four main cast, he has the least amount of experience in BL media but Iā€™m sure thatā€™ll change. In the drama CD, he was voiced by Kouhei Amasaki.
What are your thoughts on the birth of the side couple? How about Mari as a character? What about the whole Kurodachi segment? What did you think about the episode as a whole?

Note
thank you for ur kurosawa essay!!!!!
as a side note while thinking about adachi, one thing that always jumped out to me how be always noted that kurosawa was super popular/a ā€œnormieā€ (though that feels more like an awk translation)
im aware its reflective of his low self esteem, but i wonder if it was also layered ontop of his attraction to those traits of ksawa
Thank you for reading, I greatly appreciate šŸ™‡ The essay kinda drowned in the tag because of the way I posted it, so I'll link it here again.
Ok so firstly, "normie" is actually not that awkward of a translation for the word he uses, which is ćƒŖć‚¢å…… (riajuu). There's even an info text at the end of volume 2 to explain it.
Tumblr media
Like, he very much uses internet slang throughout the first few volumes it's so cringe but so funny of him lmao
And secondly, idk, I kinda don't read him like that at all. I feel like if anything Kurosawa's popularity is more of a detriment to him than a point of attraction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a source of self-doubt for him, when he compares himself to popular people he can't help but feel like he's failing at life. And it also separates him from Kurosawa, makes him feel like he's untouchable and far away. (Plus it could also potentially dredge up bad memories from his school days. We don't really know anything from this period but I can imagine him maybe getting bullied at some point in his life. That low self-esteem's gotta come from somewhere, yknow.)
So yea that's how I personally interpret it. I think he does come to like Kurosawa's more "normie" traits over time though, when he gets over his "inferiority comlex" through the course of their relationship.
Hope that was a more or less satisfying answer šŸ™

hi friends Iā€™m going to elaborate on this in another post but Iā€™ve been thinking about adachi so SO much.. and Iā€™ve been thinking about how like it is hilarious to poke fun at him cuz he is ,, extremely easy to bully. I think that we .. as a society .. need 2 talk more in depth abt him like IDK im awful at wording shit but like Iā€™ve got so many headcanons about him and his life based on the knowledge we do have on him and like what led him up to the mindset he had gotten himself into at the end of Persona 4 Golden. Like,, I DONT KNOW sorry I just am talking out of my ass but nobody liek just suddenly gives up on trying to better themselves or grows so tired of life so suddenly. And like Iā€™m not saying thatā€™s any justification for his actions cuz,, obviously not but like idk it kind of gives off the vibes to me that lifeā€™s been kicking his ass for a hot minute, it would just be fun to talk about that more and how he got to where he is. Again, obviously not justifying him to be like a saint or anything, but itā€™s just fun to think about what makes him tickā€¦ I just think we should talk about that more cuz he can be both complex and the bitchws and whores guy ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
Also like I JUST WISH that p4 golden specifically gave us a conversation and more content of adachi/Dojima post December like hhfnhh that wouldā€™ve been really nice, especially since itā€™s acknowledged that Dojima like actively has seen him multiple times since LMAO

DAWN OF THE FINAL DAY, TIME TO BEAT SOME ASS
Tumblr media
Magatsu Inaba is by far the best dungeon. The best ambient music for sure, and also just annoying in interesting ways. Adachi has a lot more control over the place than previous folks did, which leads up nicely to the revelation about him that we all saw coming.
There's a point where he's like "let's play a game! get thru this level without getting in any fights!" and it was so fucking irritating, i got booted out of his world twice trying, and like... that's a fun trick, to have the mechanics of a place be more hostile so you dislike Adachi even more. Also, the level where you have to follow the spiral all the way to the middle, passing or fighting about 8 shadows? goddamn fucking bullshit. I hate Adachi, he's amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHEN I TELL YOU I LAUGHED OUT LOUD
OH GOD I FIGURED IT OUT he's like dime store Handsome Jack. he doesn't nearly have the swagger, but because that swag is not so Off The Chart Bonkers like Handsome Jack, he seems like less of a poser than Jack? So it actually works really well. Adachi is just enough of a total bitch that he can still back it up. He's a delightful villain!
Like literally if you removed the tacked-on stupid sexism (WHICH WEIRDLY? THEY DO? IT DOESN'T COME UP AGAIN REALLY AFTER HIS INITIAL REVEAL) he's a top five villain. Huge fan of this odious little bastardman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
B R U H
Tumblr media
Adachi, I love you, you're such a shit
Which, I am cackling, but narratively, he works phenomenally well for his position in opposition to the seekers of truth. Oh yeah sure he's the killer, but also he is going to drop some hard fucking realities on your plate while he's at it. Yeah, many cops are bullies who go into the force to get access to power. Yeah, the public will be angry at the revelation that Namatame isn't the killer. People want specific truths to become reality, and that is what has fueled the Midnight Channel all this time.
HE'S GREAT. TEN OUTTA TEN. Well, nine. The weird "bitches and whores" thing was so odd, glad they left it behind now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As far as dumbass Assimilation Plots go, this one is better than most.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay so I seriously way overleveled for this game's difficulty, but even so I love the Adachi fight. After seeing everyone's Shadows as these huge weird unleashed id-creatures, going into combat against just a guy, that was really way more effective and menacing. Also his idle animations are great. Adachi will stare at whoever is up next and every few seconds he just has a hysterical laughing fit behind his hand. It's AMAZING, he's so creepy and cracked.
Also as I expected, this bitch got a Persona. Which makes sense! He has faced his inner self and his reward is a Persona, which seems to be the Magatsu Izanagi that was hinted at in his maxed-out SLink I glimpsed in the other ending.
So not only does he have Reverie's power, not old is he a Wild Card, he also has the same persona but Disaster-flavored.
Sadly he's really not a difficult fight. I would have killed to have an Adachi with multiple persona, but that would necessitate questions about him and the Velvet Room, blah blah.
ANYWAY HE'S GREAT.
Tumblr media
pats Adachi on the head as condescendingly as i possibly can

what are the other fave relationships you mentioned having
Ginko and Tanyuu (Mushishi). The nature of their relationship is unclear, between romantic and platonic, and could very well be one sided in those terms, both ways. What they do share is deep commitment to each other, with the simple promise of "if we both make it to the age where we can, let's live the rest of our days together". Here's a great post detailing it more
Inu-oh and Tomoari (Inu-oh) what if oupy and kitty were best friends? What if I found my life purpose in jamming with you. What if I named myself "I have a friend" to you. What if I lost you and spent the rest of eternity trying to find you again to hang out. I like the contrast in one being extraverted yet very secretive about his personal affairs and deeply polite, and the other being extroverted but with a fiery personality. Dudes rock
Nikaido and Kaiman (Dorohedoro). Both adults and best friends with a goofy but weirdly intimate, heartfelt relationship. Who murder bitches together in their free time YAY
Denji and Power (CSM) are both weirdoes who get to goof around each other and discover types of affection they never got. I like how Denji being his cumbrained self ends up figuring out after trying that he doesn't want to sleep with her and it evolves into them being very close in a platonic way, something he's new in experiencing. It's sweet and they're both nuisances. On the opposite end... I also adore the relationship Denji has with Makima. Harrowing to witness, simply put. I wasn't expecting such a detailed depiction of abuse in a shonen
Haruo and Adachi (Sunny). Troubled bully and his adult caretaker. There's a chapter that explores their relationship a bit deeper, in which Haruo is embarrassed to be reminded that Adachi works hard for him, plays pranks instead of apologizing and gets hit with an out of the blue, genuine verbal declaration from Adachi that he loves having him around. Both are well written, realistic characters and their shared moments fit into that. The bond they share isn't family - Haruo's deeply scarred by his living mother abandoning him in a way that obsesses and disturbs him, and Adachi is an adult man with his own family who knows the kid from work - nonetheless, he truly does care, and boy does that make the kid cringe, as you do when you are a mean little boy

It started with ramen and a cigarette.
Adachi had stopped by Moel on his way home from another shitty day at the station, being bullied by Dojima and taking on stupid cases like lost cats.
He had picked out some cheap instant ramen that he could make without much effort and a case of soda, and was now waiting in line to check out.
The transaction went by as it always did when he stopped by Moel, with friendly chatter between him and the girl, Nami, working the register, though something was different today.
As Adachi stepped out of the building, so did Nami.
ā€œWhat are you coming out here for?ā€ Adachi dared to inquire.
Nami looked at him, and wordlessly took out a pack of cigarettes.
ā€œIā€™m on break. Do you have a lighter, keijisan?ā€
Do you have a lighter?
What an odd thing to ask. He reckoned if one were to smoke, they ought to have their own lighter- yet he had one nonetheless. Not that he was the smoker.
Nami flipped it open, lit her cigarette, and handed the lighter back to him, blowing the smoke out languidly.
ā€œItā€™s going to rain, keijisan. Do you have an umbrella?ā€ Nami asked him, giving him an odd look.
Adachi shook his head, adjusting how his raincoat sat on his shoulders. ā€œNope, I got my raincoat right here,ā€ he said.
Nami nodded slowly, looking up at the clouds. Adachi mirrored her, and sure enough the sky was a darkening grey- a sign of incoming rain.
ā€œWell, youā€™d better hurry home anyways. Better to be safe than soaked, right?ā€
There was another one of those weird looks. It was annoyance or irritation, nor was it impatience or disgust.
No, Nami was looking at him with something akin to compassion. Her gaze, though oddly piercing, wasnā€™t unkind. Her words were the same. Her tone was often gruff, her words barely scraping past the bar of socially acceptable, but they were rarely ever harsh.
It wasnā€™t something Adachi was used to. Sure, Dojimaā€™s nephew Narukami and Nanako were kind to him, and Narukamiā€™s friends at least tolerated him, but to be looked at so warmly by someone completely unrelated to work or the case... It was nice.
ā€œHey, keijisan, if you donā€™t hurry that raincoat wonā€™t do anything to keep you dry. Get moving, okay? We can meet up when the storm lets up more,ā€ Nami said, pushing him lightly to snap him out of his thoughts.
He nodded, and- despite himself- gave her a smile. A rarely-used, genuine smile.
She returned it, baring her teeth and wrinkling her nose.
It was almost endearing, he thought.
With a smile on his face and cigarette smoke on his clothes, he headed home.
i want to put these two in a terrarium and give them the occasional apple slice to fight over
