The Todoroki's have to consider one thing about Izuku and All Mights connection. Do they think Izuku knows that All Might is his bio dad? I mean sure they don't share any physical traits, but his quirk his definitely different from his mother's. They think about how the child of the number 1 hero would be such a high target. They understand why All Might can't claim Izuku as his kid, especially with the LOV on the rise. They don't like the fact that All Might is basically an absentee dad, but they understand. He just wants his kid to be safe, it adds a depth to All Might that wasn't there before. They see a tragedy. And anytime that Izuku says that All Might isn't his father, they think of how much All Might wants to step in.
Obviously this is all a misunderstanding and deeply embarrassing to Izuku.
Okay so going down the line of whether or not they think Izuku knows:
Shoto - Up in the air at first but leaning towards 'doesn't know considering Izuku denying it when called out and bad lying skills. Concludes a 'no' for sure when the Melissa situation happens.
Natsuo - Thinks Izuku doesn't know. He only saw the duo interact for a few moments, but it was All Might fussing over Izuku in RG's office and on his end it was parental but Izuku seemed oblivious
Fuyumi - Thinks that Izuku knows because they're a little too close for just student-teacher(though not sus ofc) and she thinks Izuku would've noticed the closeness and questioned it if he didn't already know
Toya - Assumes Izuku knows because he 'connected the dots' via the other side in that Shigaraki and AfO weren't exactly keeping aspects of OfA a secret from the LoV(even if they don't give all the details), so 'All Might has a Quirk he can pass down to some apprentice + said apprentice is a child he's teaching in school instead of any number of capable adults = that's his child he's been training for the position.
Enji - 100% thinks Izuku knows because the reason he 'connected the dots' is Izuku's conversation to him trying to say "Hey I'm not All Might in the same way Shoto isn't you" and what Enji got out of that is 'oh All Might had a kid too!"
Rei - Thinks Izuku doesn't know because surely he'd have dropped the 'act' by this point, right? Like All Might is semi-retired and the Villains are gunning for Izuku anyway, why not roll with it?

I feel like AFO is a good example of how grief can really change a person. Like you said, OFA is the only thing of his brother he has left. If someone dear to me died, I would also want to keep anything and everything I could. TBH, to me, it's clear that AFO has not processed his grief of his brother and his trauma. Instead of All Might smashing him out of a face, maybe he should pay for AFO to get a therapist or something. I mean, I'm sure there's a part of AFO that does like being the emperor of evil, but I also feel like therapy would at least help him with his brother issues.
I am going to stop you right there: AFO is not the victim here. And it’s certainly not All Might’s responsibility to redeem him.
While I agree that Yoichi’s death made All for One more unhinged than before, it absolutely did not push him over the edge and it can’t be used to explain all the evil things he’s done. That man jumped off the slippery rope long before we even met him.
That guy killed people without being bothered by it long before he ever found this stockpile quirk.
This is a guy who is ecstatic at the idea of people murdering for him without even having to ask him to give the order.
He imprisoned his brother. I know we are all joking about the vaulting thing but I am pretty sure we are approaching torture territory. Human brains can’t process being placed in solitary confinement. It drives them crazy and to this day, I am sure All for One did it to break his brother’s spirit and make him more compliant.
In chapter 193, what do you think happened to those people he depowered in the middle of a fight?
It’s not because he didn’t kill them himself that he isn’t responsible.
And I am not talking about all the One for All holders he killed. May I remind you that he didn’t only kill Nana; he nuked her?
Do you maybe remember Kamino, where he flattened an entire neighbourhood just to take out four heroes? Those buildings certainly weren’t empty.
You don’t negotiate with someone like him. You try to survive him.
And I can’t even understand why All Might paying him therapy is an option? Don’t you think All for One has the money to see a therapist on his own? And even if he did, he wouldn’t stop being an asshole or a mass murderer.
All for One doesn’t want to be better (making a therapy a moot point, btw). He just wants to obtain whatever strikes his fancy.

Why Bakugou Katsuki being the 'Love Interest' actually works
The main purpose of the love interest is to be the protagnist's main emotional connection (or should I say trigger lmao)
Their dynamic is crucial to the advancement of the story
The love interest is often the deuteroganist
The narrative often rewards their attempts to reconciliation
Bring out each others strengths and flaws
From the very first episode, Izuku has always reacted strongly when Katsuki is involved. He is a spectator to the Sludge Villain till he realised who was trapped. Then his body moved on its own
Katsuki didn't know that Izuku had a quirk till their first day at UA--he assumed that Izuku had gotten into the school without a quirk and went 'yeah that checks'
Izuku tells him the secret of OFA on the very first day--he doesn't even tell anything to his mother
Izuku escapes the villains in USJ by copying Katsuki and screaming DIE as he jumps off a boat
Seriously, most people would think 'What would Bakugou do?' and then proceed to do the complete opposite. Everyone except this mad lad apparently
Izuku wins the sports race by doing what he thought Kacchan would do
Omfg I completely forgot the nicknames. Nicknames
Especially Kacchan--Katsuki doesn't even protest to this cutesy nickname even once during the entire story. Sus.
Katsuki wins his match against Uraraka because he thought she had taken advice from Deku and he prepared the required counter attack
Seriously these guys can anticipate each others movements so well it's scary
Izuku masters some control over OFA by once again thinking 'What would Kacchan do?'
Seriously that's like his foolproof plan for every situation and it works???
Aizawa placing them against All Might for their exam solely because of their dynamic--he knew what a powerhouse they could be together if they just learnt how
Izuku: *hears that one of the objectives of the training camp attack is to kill him*
Izuku: *completely ignores that* omg kacchan!
*life or death situation where accurate information is necessary* Izuku: One of the targets is Kacchan!
Hero: Who???
1a: omg it's midoriya (love how that's how they recognise him, it's so distinct)
Stay back Deku
Izuku's complete break down screaming when Katsuki is kidnapped
"It was a complete failure"
He literally risks everything to save him
Deku vs Kacchan Part 2 *ctrl+c*
The highlights: 'you're my image of victory', 'closer to me than All Might'
Cannot believe I almost forget the several panels towards the end of DvK2
just leaving these over here
s4 didn't really have a lot them because it was focused on other things (and it actually gave them the space the needed after whatever DvK2 was) so moving onto the Joint Training
"Keep your eyes on me Deku"
Izuku just,,, ignorning everything else and focusing on Katsuki's match (when he was constantly talking and analysing for the last three)
Katsuki being Izuku's trigger for blackwhip *chef's kiss*
Okay, detour for a second. Ochako hugging Izuku when his quirk goes crazy can be likened to a very similar scene between Aang and Katara in Avatar. However, Katara succeeds in calming him down. Ochako is not.
More than that, the narrative seems to punish Ochako for her feelings towards Deku. Punish is a harsh word but that is exactly what is happening
When she realises them, she almost fails her exam
Toga is able to get away with Ochako's blood during the training camp because she gets distracted
It inhibits her performance in the joint training arc
She consciously realises that her feelings are pulling her back during the war and makes an effort to ignore them
And during chapter 342, it is a perfect opportunity for her to tell Izuku how she feels. A confession before the final battle is such a staple. But she doesn't. She's not even thinking about them at that point, instead, focusing on what she has to do as a hero.
On the flip side, we keep seeing how Izuku and Katsuki becoming closer is actually rewarded by the narrative?
You get Katsuki being his confidant about OFA (which he learns about 200 chapters before everyone else, not considering when Izuku flat out tells him in s1)
Izuku often becomes a better hero by taking ideas from Katsuki
The war arc--omfg the war arc
Katsuki coming along with Izuku when he's going after Shigaraki
The flashback to training with All Might, where he's like, I want to keep him at arm's distance
I feel that Katsuki is talking about how Izuku continuously keeps disregarding his own well being and that makes it so difficult to be close to him because witnessing that over and over again?
His sheer panic when he's not able to help
Taking charge of the situation (even when you have the number one pro right there) and making a plan on the spot that no one argues about
My body moved on its own
The parallels fuck me up every single time
I very much appreciate that this chapter is called Bakugou Katsuki Rising
Izuku's sheer rage when AFO insults Katsuki's sacrifice--he just snaps
Katsuki literally had a quirk evolution so that he could reach Izuku in time
I have never felt this way before, like I am on death's doorstep
Katsuki you were no were near the fight happening in the sky. You have almost died several times. But this is the closest you've been to feeling like you were dying???
Katsuki running through the hospital (including ripping out the IV???) to find Izuku when he heard he was in a coma
Omg I almost forgot Izuku's 'Kacchan and everyone else' agenda
Time and time again during even the vigilante arc we see Izuku thinking about war and Katsuki is almost always at the forefront of that
The sheer poetic brilliance of when Izuku is just about to give up, his symbol of victory shows up to save him
Katsuki saying he's the one who knows Deku best and absolutely no one disagrees
Every single fucking thing that Katsuki tells Izuku when they're trying to get him to come back, it's all so hard hitting and exactly what he needed to hear
The apology! Hallelujuah
Izuku--
Like seriously, which fanfic is this
Katsuki was actually so much further away than the others but guess who caught Izuku when he fell--
His continuous effort to be better is just--I have many emotions
Katsuki is always by Izuku's side after the vigilante arc--even during the UA traitor reveal, he was there right next to him
I really like the symbolism behind it
Their whole dynamic is flawless
I love them
(heroes rising bkdk commentary)
#i did my best but this is definitely not the full extent of their dynamic#this post was *long* overdue#bnha#mha#bakudeku#midoriya izuku#bakugou katsuki#mha manga spoilers

Villain Hunt Arc Meta: All For One’s Horrific Guide to Methodically Breaking Down Your Local OFA Holder
Ft. Turning the ‘Overpoweredness’ of OFA into a Setback, and AFO’s Successful Manipulations Of Midoriya Izuku
In which I also give AFO too much credit for all the pain he’s probably caused, and theorize that his plans to break Izuku actually started getting enacted even before he’d escaped Tartarus.
(A.k.a. me loving the angst because this is really good angst writing, but also hating it because the manga doesn’t come with a Angst with A Happy Ending tag unless you count Izuku’s ‘this is the story of how I became the greatest hero’ which isn’t really a guarantee of happiness )
So. What an arc! In the span of ten chapters (starting from the end of the War arc) Hori delivered a full-on Villain-looking, Vigilante Midoriya Izuku. Congratulations, Horikoshi, for finally introducing Akatani Mikumo!
The fast pacing and lack of breather panels are so fitting for this arc truly. AFO never gave them a moment’s rest. Yes, from henceforth as he’d promised... It’s always going to be his turn.
Izuku is making amazing progress with unlocking the full power of One For All. In his words, his abilities might as well already be on par with what a healthier All Might could do, and with no recoil to boot. Plus, there’s only one last quirk to unlock. For villain fights, I don’t think we need to worry about him losing, or him breaking anymore bones at this time.
Which, some might argue, makes Izuku too ‘OP.’
To start with, I want to talk first about the ‘overpoweredness’ of the One For All quirk. It’s a wonderful quirk truly, having inspired and amazed so many because of its sheer power. Used well, it could grant instant victories and restore the people’s wavering faith to the heroes. Because with a quirk like that on your side, everything’s going to be alright, right? There’s always gonna be that bit of hope that something is still strong enough to stand against the looming evil...right?
Yeah. That’s what the people who’d lived under All Might’s Era of Peace thought so too. History repeats.
OFA’s ‘OP-ness’ is both a great blessing and a great burden.
Here are some points on how the narrative has made OFA's 'overpoweredness' a setback:
1. All For One—that bastard—exploits the urge that comes with OFA. Just as ‘AFO the quirk’s’ goal is to steal OFA, OFA’s job is to defeat AFO, and Izuku is sacrificing himself to its cause.
Here’s another thing I want to point out: The conclusion that the heroes drew about AFO planning to capture Midoriya Izuku alive? In rereading, I’m starting to believe it’s nothing but a mere assumption of his plans. Aside from the deal made with Lady Nagant—of which I think AFO didn’t take seriously anyway and set her up for failure— (and while we as readers are already aware of his true intentions to wear Izuku down) it’s weird that nowhere had AFO directly mentioned to Izuku that he’s going to kidnap him and take his quirk from him.
2. OFA made Izuku so brilliant (e.g. Pros and former Pros alike going “This kid...”) that they really can't help but place all their hopes on him. Sighs. In an ideal world, this would be a dream come true of Izuku getting his due credit for all his heroic achievements Pro heroes have started to do to Izuku what they’ve done all their lives to All Might--which is to put him on the pedestal, while they fall back to cover him like guards/safety net. Hence, falling back to the One Pillar Model mindset.
3. OFA makes Izuku untouchable, not only to the villains, but also to his allies. Prime material to reinforce isolation. And if Izuku doesn't want to be caught, he won't make it easy for either side.
4. OFA IS SUS AF, OKAY? What are the Holders doing?! While gaining access to them makes it easier and convenient to have personal trainers in handling OFA, the vestiges prove to add a lot to Izuku’s mental load. If they’d allowed Izuku to come to the point of being caked with blood and filth, they’re not doing very well at guiding him. Realize that most of their arc interactions with Izuku is Quirk Talk. They, of all people, should know how AFO’s machinations work! Hey First, for the love of god, warn Izuku! He’s showing so many signs of being manipulated that you should be picking up on. please /sobs ;;
Tbf, like, I’m pretty sure that the Holders haven’t been as mentally okay either, which would feed into Izuku’s current mindset.
Now that the setbacks have been listed, let’s dive in to AFO’s plans to toy with Midoriya Izuku.
PHASE 1: Pre-Tartarus Breakout
Speaking of OFA being sus, there’s something that has been niggling at the back of my mind.
All For One basically tells Izuku: “You were my main interest that entire time I was in prison”. So, to pass the time in Tartarus (since he can’t use any(?) of his quirks), AFO has been doing nothing but apparently daydreaming and designing a personal hell for the Ninth Holder during that entire period. HOWEVER, it also made me wonder…
…Even before he’d broken out, had AFO made any moves at all in enacting his plans to break Izuku?
Yeah?
And here’s the kicker: he says that before Blackwhip bursted out.
AFO is a master manipulator. Assuming that Izuku doesn’t have any latent AFO quirk (for whatever reason *coughs* maybe dfo if you're a believer) or that Quirk Singularity has anything to do with it, what is the trigger to Izuku suddenly having access to Blackwhip?
I’d argue that it is All For One himself.
Why? What’s his goal? If you notice during the Joint Training arc, Izuku is feeling pretty confident about his progress. He’s rather happy and feeling blessed, and he is making leaps and bounds with base power OFA.
AFO can’t have that. He can’t allow the Ninth Holder to become too emotionally stable, or else he’d have a stronger will. So by somehow activating Blackwhip, AFO makes Izuku feel like he hasn’t made any progress with his quirk at all. During the evaluations, Izuku mentions that he still needs a lot to work on, and while not all of it is visible, with the way he behaves, it’s pretty evident that his self-confidence has taken a rather large hit.
But, wait! If AFO had tampered with OFA during the JT arc, paving the way to unlocking the rest (like he’d also done during the War arc when he tried to ‘steal’ it then), then wouldn’t AFO be sabotaging himself since he’d be making Izuku a more formidable opponent?
Sure. Except that the quirks inside OFA are mostly useless when it comes to the mental part of the fighting. The only thing they’re useful for is for the current Holder to be able to play keep-away in the physical realm. And AFO could easily just find counters for those through his work on Tomura.
You know how else the situation becomes advantageous for AFO? With every quirk unlocked, Izuku’s goalposts keep on getting away from him, and Izuku will always feel like he isn’t ready or prepared enough. Izuku will push and push himself to master OFA to its fullest, to become more powerful, at the cost of his mental/emotional stability and physical wellbeing as he wears himself down.
And every time Izuku grew more powerful, and became more ‘OP,’ he is burdened with all the aforementioned setbacks that came with it. He could be the most powerful person in the world, but it’s all for naught if he doesn’t take care of himself. This plan is both a high risk and high reward on AFO’s part, and as of the moment, with a bloody Izuku staggering all over, AFO is visibly reaping these high rewards.
PHASE 2: Post-Tartarus Breakout
He’s going to toy with Izuku until Izuku fucking breaks. What follows is his series of actions that instills the desired responses from Midoriya Izuku. Let’s see how the master manipulator plays this game of chess, shall we?
Izuku’s plan: Reach out to villains and try to save them.
AFO’s counter: Kill off those who turn their back against villainy and/or acknowledge Izuku as a true hero.
Izuku’s resulting response: Stop reaching out to villains. Gain an instant victory and move on.
After all, what do you get when you block a hero from showing sympathy? You get an unfeeling living weapon.
---
Izuku’s plan: Work with the top pro heroes to bring down AFO.
AFO’s counter: Make plans that will serve to highlight how the top pros are just slowing Izuku down. (e.g. Making moves while it’s raining, so as to divide them, but also to bring out No. 1 Hero Endeavor’s "slowness" in the rain. Nope, I don’t think that’s a throwaway line at all.)
Izuku’s resulting response: Grows more reckless, often leading the charge.
---
Izuku’s plan: Track AFO down.
AFO’s counter: Lead them to dead-ends. Or when they do supposedly reach something, endanger them.
Izuku’s resulting response: His tunnel vision worsens, as he grows more desperate.
---
Izuku’s plan: All Might following him around is okay since it would help All Might from worrying so much, and Izuku could simultaneously keep an eye on and protect All Might.
AFO’s counters: There are a lot to really fuck with this bond, damn you AFO.
Taint that passing the torch memory of ‘You’re Next.’
Declare that All Might no longer interests him. Liar. He outright stated before that he’s one for keeping a grudge
Send another assassin to Izuku [Underlying Message: You yourself are a walking danger zone to those whom you dearly care for.]
Izuku’s resulting response:
Interpret that memory of ‘You’re Next’ as taking up the position of being AFO’s shiny new plaything, and therefore supposedly sparing All Might from the torment (Unfortunately, making Izuku push AM away is just part of the torment ;A;)
Think that AM is no longer in the direct line of fire as long as AFO focuses on Izuku
Finally, push his last line of morale support away, and completely isolate himself.
Btw, I wonder how All Might feels about Izuku using Nana's quirk to get away from him.
---
The suffering doesn’t end.
Izuku’s plan: Save people.
AFO’s counters: (possibly offscreen) Send more villains and assassins to torment Izuku some more with the knowledge that he can’t save them. Sending villains out also puts innocents in danger.
Izuku’s resulting response: He won’t stop for anything. He won’t sleep, won’t eat, won’t slow down. He will always do his best to save as long as someone is in danger.
His body will keep on moving and moving and MOVING on its own.
--- All For One is very effective as a supervillain. He has managed to make the heroes think that his only goal is to capture Izuku alive for his quirk. He has Izuku right where he wants him: dancing to his tune at the palm of his hand, utterly toyed with, left with no escape in sight.
Psychologically vaulted.
.
.
.
PHASE 3
And so, if Izuku is being manipulated to drive himself further and further into self-destruction, what then is there left for All For One to do?
So much more. Because, my god, I think AFO has mastered the art of traumatizing the OFA Holders.
All For One once told All Might, “I will destroy all that you’ve protected.” And boy, is he delivering. He's definitely not done with AM btw.
First, he destroys All Might's image. And he is manipulating Izuku to drive himself to that point. To looking into his absolute worst.
And when that point arrives, AFO will hammer the final nail home.
Something like...
BEHOLD
JAPAN’S SYMBOL OF PEACE.
And oh, how it'll hurt. To see All Might's pride and joy be flaunted about as looking nothing like a hero to the masses, for him to be so utterly humiliated.
"See what I did to All Might's successor."
AFO will be banking upon the possibility that the angry masses will not want to be saved by whom they're tricked into viewing as someone that's the cause of all the pain. Izuku might have the willpower to stay true to his resolve, but with him on the verge of total breakdown, what would happen when he is shunned by the very people he is trying to help?
I once wrote a post about how the current events seem to be a bastardization of Izuku's wildest fantasies: he's working with the top pros, he has the most powerful quirk, and he's working with All Might (whom technically acts as a sidekick to him rn).
AFO has warped all that into a never-ending nightmare. And Izuku...
Izuku is really in need of saving.
Last thoughts:
Let me just say that it shouldn't be a competition about who gets to get through to Izuku. Right now, he’s gonna need all the help he can get, and it can’t be delivered by only one or two people. Saving Izuku is going to be a team effort, a solid support system that sees Izuku as their classmate/friend/student/actual person that they care about. And there’s sufficient space for that.
More hands reaching out means more chances to catch him if he falls.

Still Waters Run Deep: Aoyama observations I have no idea what to do with but I’m scared
Something is very wrong with Yuuga Aoyama and I don’t know what it is. Please help.
I used to be a big proponent of the Traitor Aoyama theory right up until his weird stalker red herring episode. After that, I let it drop. But like many other people, a certain Drawing Smash art exhibit piece got me thinking again. So I did some more digging.
I’m not necessarily convinced there is an active traitor/mole at UA. (I found the Traitor Hagakure theory compelling as well, but recently I was starting to think maybe AFO bugged Izuku via an OFA connection or something.) But I just went through the entire MHA manga for every piece of Aoyama I could find, and I found so much unexplained weirdness...I just don’t know what to think anymore. I know one thing though:
I am absolutely terrified.
Let me take you on a journey through my last 24 hours.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Aoyama sus... I. A brief summary of the Traitor Aoyama theory II. The tentacle monster that made everyone do a double-take Huh, well that’s odd III. Weird AF Aoyama things IV. The anime added a ton of extra Aoyama scenes for some reason?? V. Aoyama has 0 problems after being brainwashed, I GUESS VI. “I mostly just need bug spray” for Aoyama Inception UM WHAT VII. Summer Training Camp: WHAT. THE. FUCK. VIII. USJ: He’s not...THERE...is he? Protect him IX. “I can’t help but stand out,” says the background character X. Theorizing my ass off
I am warning you right now: This is 80% stream of consciousness sleep-deprived screaming, not solid meta crafting. I found two (or more) dots, and I have no idea how to connect them.
I. A brief summary of the Traitor Aoyama theory
I am not the first person to posit that Aoyama could be the traitor. It is a suspicion I came to myself while watching the show, but others came to the same conclusions themselves. I don’t know what all everyone has said about it, but here are the points I’ve had on my mind for a long time, so I assume everyone else is kind of aware of them:
Aoyama’s introduction and Horikoshi’s character notes imply Aoyama’s role was determined early in the story. He features quite prominently in the UA entrance exam and quirk assessment test arcs, noted by others for his ability to keep cool under pressure, but then suddenly fades to the background.
Aoyama’s location during the USJ arc is conspicuously identified to us as “a secret.” To this day, we still don’t know where he was. If he is on the LOV’s side, Kurogiri could have warped him to a safe location.
For a student at a top hero training academy, Aoyama has no clear “heroic” aspirations or dreams, and he’s not a particularly motivated student.
Aoyama appears to be keenly observing his fellow students, particularly Izuku, and picked up on how Uraraka has a crush on Izuku before even she realized she did.
For some reason, it seems Dabi noticed Aoyama hiding nearby at the summer training camp but didn’t do anything about it. Aoyama also seems afraid/reluctant to engage the villains until the end when he saves Tokoyami, and he votes to dissuade Kirishima from trying to track down the kidnapped Bakugou.
Aoyama’s behavior during the hero provisional licensing exam is notably mysterious. His brief childhood memories imply he feels different from everyone else and distresses over it. He also has some vague “dream” along the lines of “wanting to feel equal to everyone” that still has not been explained.
In the short arc featuring him right before the school cultural festival, the “cheese incident,” if you will, Izuku narrates about Aoyama’s free spirit, and Iida comments on Aoyama’s loner tendencies during lunchtime. His strange behavior in the arc is referred to as “showing his true colors.” This is right before Aoyama delivers the cryptic “still waters run deep” message, which is an idiomatic expression meaning “silent folk are dangerous.”
Included in the cheese incident, Aoyama delivers another cryptic message to Izuku: “I know.” Many have theorized this means he knows Izuku’s secret about One For All. Aoyama explains it away by saying he and Izuku are similar in that their bodies are not built for their quirks, so he felt a sort of kindred spirit in Izuku. Izuku is happy to befriend Aoyama, but Aoyama makes a dark, sad face at the end of their interaction that is either the punchline of a joke or hinting at...something deeper. Many people theorize he likes his classmates and is sad to betray them.
II. The tentacle monster that made everyone do a double-take
So Twitter user @aitaikimochi gave us a glimpse of some special art Horikoshi made for the Drawing Smash art exhibit along with a general sketch of the setup to give us the full picture, and...just look at it.
For those asking details of this picture, here's a very crappy drawing of what the art looks like. Basically, the purple monster is coming out of a warehouse door, and Aoyama is sitting on a box right in front of the monster with an empty bottle next to him.
- aitaikimochi
And now, as you can imagine, the Traitor Aoyama theories have been given second life.
But the thing that set me off was...the empty bottle.
If you go look up the #MHAExhibition tag and check out the setup of the expo, you’ll see how they decided to display the art throughout this warehouse. There’s a sandbag in front of the “effective sandbag that hits back” Noumu from the USJ arc. So that empty bottle is likely very deliberately placed.
And all I could think was...
And my brain just started firing off absolutely wild observations like:
Did the heroes/police actually manage to collect all the scattered sludge after All Might defeated him?
They do keep referencing the sludge villain incident a bunch over the series don’t they...
Did like a little piece of the sludge villain get away?
Is it hiding inside a “skin suit” like a wire tap, or is it full on controlling someone’s actions?
Is the empty bottle maybe a metaphor for an empty vessel, sludge villain questions notwithstanding?
Still waters run deep
So, obviously, I went full Shouto Todoroki and had to see how deep the rabbit hole would go.
III. Weird AF Aoyama things
I pulled up all the background info on Aoyama I could and went through his character intro scenes, and, honestly, what am I supposed to think about this stuff????? This is just bizarre.
The kanji in his family name just mean “blue mountain,” but the kanji in his given name Yuuga (優雅) are...INTERESTING.
Yuu = a person with lithe movements, kind, superior, rich/wealthy, gentleness, actor (UMMM?????)
Ga = gracious, elegant, graceful, refined
His hero name “Can’t Stop Twinkling” is shortened from “I Cannot Stop Twinkling” and is translated into Japanese as “kirakira ga tomerarenai yo.” Has anyone really thought about this? He named himself “I AM UNABLE TO STOP THE TWINKLING.” Were you trying to stop it? Are you okay???
Why is Aoyama the one to recognize and provide exposition on who Recovery Girl is??? Like, why? What? The narrator could have told us who she is, right?? (Did you know Recovery Girl has the same birthday as Tomura Shigaraki, April 4th, super super unlucky day of DEATH NUMBERS?)
But while rifling through episodes and manga pages, I pretty quickly came upon another discovery...
IV. The anime added a ton of extra Aoyama scenes for some reason??
Aoyama isn’t in this scene in the manga. The anime added him in.
And then he gets interrupted and hidden by Ashido. Why? Why add this? We already learned his name a few episodes ago!
But the anime doesn’t stop there.
This was almost the entire Ashido vs Aoyama fight in the Sports Festival as told by the manga. The anime stretched it out, which, I get it, filler. But I just...now I want to know what does his bellybutton look like without the belt? I can’t help but wonder??? SHOULD I BE WONDERING THAT?
Because at the time, I was looking for evidence that maybe Aoyama is just the sludge villain inside a skin suit. And gosh, I still can’t discount the possibility. Aoyama is normally able to keep cool in dangerous situations, which is pretty much his highlighted trait in the entrance exam, but every so often he looks utterly terrified by something.
He’s really not fond of Ashido after she acids his cape. You know, the goopy acid girl. The one who...wanted to name herself Alien Queen, which was rejected because of the Ridley Scott movies...about the alien bursting out of people’s stomachs.
Aoyama gets a lot of stomachaches.
The anime also just recently added in this bit in Season 5.
Aoyama was not heavily featured in this moment in the manga, but the anime adds this whole scene of him cowering in fear of Dark Shadow (despite being able to protect himself with his navel laser quite easily here). Why is he freaking out when he normally doesn’t panic in battle?
Is it just bad filler? Is it...because he’s facing a parasitic body-controlling monster?
But the manga isn’t completely silent on this theme, because remember, Kuroiro shows up and fakes Tokoyami out, revealing his true goal is to capture Aoyama first. And he successfully abducts Aoyama, which the anime adds an excellent R2D2 scream to, because humor will properly distract us from HOW TERRIFIED AOYAMA IS AT THIS MOMENT.
Because he’s been snagged by a guy who melts into the shadows with the “ooze” sound effect.
WE HAVE TO GO DEEPER
V. Aoyama has 0 problems after being brainwashed, I GUESS
Aoyama is on Shinsou’s team for the cavalry battle in the sports festival. Shinsou brainwashed everyone on his team. The other two members of his team dropped out of the tournament in shame, believing they should only make it to the finals on their own merits and skills. How can they claim to do that if they can’t remember even getting here?
But Aoyama isn’t moved. He stays in the tournament.
He also makes a weird (twinkling) facial expression though, kinda like the one Toga makes when she’s pretending to be Ochako and about to knock Izuku out of the provisional hero license exam. I do not know what to make of this. Maybe Aoyama just has no shame about being mind controlled because he’s already that way on a daily basisvlfhabjhkksdn no we’re not there yet.
VI. “I mostly just need bug spray” for Aoyama Inception
Why does the final exam arc start like this?
Which way are you facing, sweetie???
Like I can’t even tell if he’s looking at the people standing beside him or just directly at the audience because we all know he’s capable of the latter, but this is the arc where...
Is it possible Aoyama asked Ochako if she has a crush on Izuku to...distract her? Like it’s not true at all, but he wants to distract her so she’ll end up his meat shield or something? So he basically inceptions her with her crush, which is why that romantic subplot seems so damn forced?
Was he worried the power of Thirteen’s Black Hole would have bad repercussions for him? Like his belt might slip off or...something might...slip out...?
NO NO NO I’M NOT GOING INTO CONSPIRACY THEORY MODE YET
How convenient that his crush inception distracts Ochako long enough for Shigaraki to get the jump on Izuku though.
I mean, if we’re taking these panels literally...Aoyama is the bug?
VII. Summer Training Camp: WHAT. THE. FUCK.
Remember when everyone draws lots to form pairs for the test of courage? Aoyama gets paired with Yaoyorozu. Then, Katsuki wants to swap with Ojiro, Mineta’s partner, so he can get out of being paired with Todoroki. At the same time, Mineta asks to swap with Aoyama so he can be with Yaoyorozu.
Aoyama refuses. Why?
It could be for Yaoyorozu’s sake. It could also be because...he doesn’t want to partner with Ojiro, I guess. OR...maybe he doesn’t want to partner with Katsuki if all the swaps happen?
Traitor theorists: Because he knew Katsuki would be targeted by the LOV tonight?
Me, doing everything in my power to ignore how this all started when I wondered if Aoyama is the sludge villain in disguise: God, I hope it’s just nothing.
And then we don’t see Aoyama again for quite a while, until we find him hiding in the woods with the unconscious Jirou and Hagakure, and...um...
Why isn’t he wearing his gas mask?
No. Seriously. Why did he take that off??????
Yaoyorozu asked Aoyama to take Jirou and Hagakure back to camp, but this WHOLE time he was hiding in this little area with them? If it was a safe breathing space, HOW DID HE FIND IT? And if it wasn’t, WHY WASN’T HE WEARING HIS GAS MASK? He left the masks on the other two, so clearly he thought it was still necessary for them. Does he not need to breathe?
...
DOES HE NOT NEED TO BREATHE??
...oh god, setting that aside.
Even if Aoyama is the traitor, I don’t know how well this scene works as support. Dabi clearly doesn’t expect Aoyama to be there, and then for some reason forgets about him? Aoyama covers his mouth like he’s afraid, but we established earlier that he’s not a coward. It seems he’s just afraid of...certain situations.
What is going on here? Does he know something no one else does?
DID YOU SEE HIS FACE AT THE HOSPITAL WHEN HE IS TRYING TO CONVINCE KIRISHIMA NOT TO GO RESCUE KATSUKI?
You okay, bud?
He looks so much more freaked out than everyone else. That’s his reaction to Tsuyu’s line about how, “If we break the law, then we’re no better than villains.” WHY?
VIII. USJ: He’s not...THERE...is he?
Does this seem out of order? Bear with me here.
Here’s the famous panel that gets everyone talking about “Hey, where DID Hagakure end up when everyone was teleported away?”
People theorize that Hagakure lies about ending up with Todoroki because she’s standing so far away from him (she’s in front of Satou), and also because she saw Ojiro but that would be a very far way for her to see if she was where Todoroki ends up.
Generally speaking, people ended up warped together with whoever they were standing near.
The most obvious places for Aoyama to end up would be with either Todoroki or Ojiro because that would spread the teams thinly and he was standing fairly close to them. However, might I point out something VERY INTERESTING.
As they’re being warped away, Aoyama gets shown together in a panel with one particular group.
...did Aoyama end up in the flood zone with Izuku’s group?
If so...why didn’t we see him?
Where could he have possibly hid?
...underwater?
...
D O E S H E N O T N E E D T O B R E A T H E ? ?
Still waters run deep.
STOP
IX. “I can’t help but stand out,” says the background character
I’m going to round it all out with a few miscellaneous notes because I just don’t have time for all of this I have to sleep someday.
In his flashback to his childhood, we see him speak to his “Papa” and “Maman,” but we’ve never seen his father. WHO IS HE?
Aoyama’s inspired by Iida in the hero provisional license exam to perform “actions that reflect his dreams,” and proceeds to make himself bait for Iida’s sake stand out so everyone can see him.
That one scene in the mall where Ochako needs bug spray? I said Aoyama is the bug. The Japanese word used here is “mushi” (means more like creepy crawlers than just bugs), which is a homophone of a Japanese word meaning “ignore.” He wants to stand out, but he’s a pest to be ignored. STILL WATERS RUN DEEP
Aoyama often has stars drawn into his speech bubbles for some kind of flair, but it seems like most often these stars show up when he’s upset or angry??? There’s also a star on the “I know” cheese platter he leaves for Izuku...
Sometimes I get the feeling Aoyama is speaking in code, maybe because he feels like he’s being watched? What if the “cheese” he keeps giving out is a hint. Like...for Hagakure??? “SAY CHEESE!”
Aoyama loves surprises. You know what counts as a surprise? A PLOT TWIST.
WHY WAS THE MAJORITY OF THIS SCENE CUT FROM THE ANIME? I feel like it’s hinting at Aoyama’s loneliness and fear of being watched or something I DON’T KNOW
X. Theorizing my ass off
So uh, what do I do with this crap?
Is Aoyama just the sludge villain in disguise, hence why he doesn’t need to BREATHE? (Probably no, UNLESS...??) **Edit 4/29/21: U N L E S S
Is he bugged, maybe by the sludge villain or something else?
Is this even related to the League of Villains at all?
Did he catch the traitor but can’t tell anyone? Is it Hagakure? Is it IZUKU and Aoyama’s trying to tell him without alarming him that something’s in his head?
PROTECT HIM

BnHA Chapter 316: We've Had One, Yes, But What About Second Explosion
Previously on BnHA: Deku was all “[powers up like whoa because it’s time to end the fight]”, and he saved Overhaul from getting not-shot, and then smashed up Nagant’s arm with the power of his new rechargeable super knees. Nagant was all “yoooo this kid is crazy strong whaaaat, it’s like he’s some kind of protagonist or something.” Deku was all “I AM A PROTAGONIST, ACTUALLY, DO YOU WANT TO JOIN FORCES AND FIGHT BAD GUYS WITH ME?” Nagant was all “ah shit why the hell no -- ” and then AFO was all “SURPRISE” and everyone was all “?!?!?!” and AFO was all “TIME TO EXPLODE NOW” and made Nagant explode because he’s an absolute fucking dick. And then Hawks showed up, because Horikoshi just wanted to stuff as many plot points as humanly possible into a single chapter I guess.
Today on BnHA: Hawks is all “good job giving motivational shounen redemption speeches Deku but I’ll take it from here” and screams very earnestly right in Nagant’s face until she finally wakes up. Nagant is all “oh hey it’s my successor, you seem surprisingly unfucked-up from your own HPSC tenure, how did you manage that?” Hawks is all “fandom is going to love hearing this one, but basically it’s because I’m very upbeat and also I had the world’s best role model Endeavor to look up to,” and I swear this man stirs the pot on purpose, but damn it I still love him so damn much. Overhaul is all “HELLO AGAIN, JUST A REMINDER THAT, THE BOSS!!” and Deku is all “MAYBE TAKE TWO SECONDS TO REFLECT ON HOW YOU TORTURED A LITTLE GIRL,” which, thank you, lol. Nagant is all “btw AFO’s hiding in a house in the woods”, and so Deku and the gang go to the house in the woods. Video recording!AFO is all “hi I’m AFO welcome to Jackass” and blows up the house. Sometimes I wonder if this manga is just a weird dream.
I am once again reading the Bean version because I think it was actually the best out of all three translations last week. and that is surprisingly including Viz’s. “faux” is not nearly as entertaining as “knockoff”, and also I have literally no idea why Caleb thought Deku was saying the Third’s lines lol
oh hey, Endeavor’s here too! not that you’d ever be able to tell from this first panel lmao
glad you received All Might’s call, mysterious unidentified glowing smudge
oh snap he says he’s weaker in the rain. is that why AFO told Nagant to attack then?? except that as we discussed the other day, I believe that AFO fully intended for Nagant to lose the fight, so him giving her info that would give her an advantage doesn’t really fit in with that. maybe he wanted Deku to be separated from Endeavor and the rest for maximum angst, though
btw Deku’s eyes are unsurprisingly back to the new normal here
alas, the angst continues. I say, pretending like I’m not totally eating it up each and every week and writing essay after essay about it lol
anyway so apparently Hawks can’t actually fly lmao. he was just yeeting himself with style
for some reason this is the funniest fucking thing I’ve ever seen omfg. wave to Hawks, kids! say “bye, Hawks!”
j/k of course Deku is catching them. -- except???
wow so he was just running on fumes there at the end. well, good to know there is actually a limit to his shenanigans, particularly regarding this new “knockoff” 100% OFA. it will definitely not alleviate any of the discourse, but it’s good for my own peace of mind because it’s solid confirmation that he still needs his pals in order to win this thing
anyway, but on to the rest of this conversation, which is basically Deku deducing what we all deduced last week -- AFO implanted some sort of trap into Nagant when he gave her Air Walk. though I’d still like to get the actual details from AFO and/or Horikoshi, because this was particularly wild even by quirk standards lol
omgggggg
she still has a face after all!! so it’s confirmed, Horikoshi has no idea what “blowing up” actually means. we might have guessed, based on what happened to Toga in the MVA arc, and also based on everything Katsuki does ever, but shhh
so now Hawks is all “NAGANT PLEASE WAKE UP, IF I SHOUT MY NAME AT YOU WILL THAT DO THE TRICK”
this is actually kind of touching though because even though we all know (or most of us acknowledge at any rate) that Hawks is a pretty caring person, it’s rare to see him actually panic over someone’s welfare like this
oh shit Horikoshi is really doubling down on it
I wonder how much Hawks knew about what really happened between Nagant and the HPSC. regardless, he probably sees her as a kindred spirit of sorts, and I’m more than happy for Deku to pass the redemption torch onto him now that he’s on the scene. like no offense Deku but they actually know each other and stuff lol
DAMMIT NAGANT CAN’T YOU SEE HOW LOUD HE IS YELLING
apparently being freed from his HPSC shackles has finally given Hawks the space to embrace his own inner shounen protagonist. is there anything more shounen than trying to motivationally scream someone awake when they’re lying in your arms inches from death?? 100% guaranteed to work
!!! IS THIS NAGANT’S POV OMG
SO SHE IS ALIVE. THANK GOD. Horikoshi doesn’t want to meet with my emotional distress lawyer today after all
love how she’s all “just gonna stir up the weekly Hawks Discourse pot here by implying that he probably committed a lot of Atrocities just like I did, so now people can get all hopped up about that, even though there’s no evidence he’s ever killed anyone aside from that one horrible ‘damned-if-you-do...’ situation with Twice.” no one asked for your provocative speculation young lady!! trust me Nagant, our rabbles don’t need the rousing lol
but nice save there with the “so how are your eyes so untainted” well you see it’s because even when he was following the HPSC’s orders he always went to great lengths never to go against his own moral compass. which just to be clear was incredibly difficult, and led to a ton of pain and suffering on his part, because the life of a spy is basically just one impossible situation after another. but in spite of that he never stopped trying to do his best to help people. I don’t really know where this tangent came from or is leading to, lol, but anyway p.s.a. I love Hawks a lot and he’s a good kid dammit
oh shit??!?
how is the League always able to swing all these fancy forest mansions. where do they find them. how many do they have
so Deku’s dropping them -- very roughly, not sure if he was reacting to finally getting AFO’s location, or if his energy really is giving out -- and now Nagant’s saying that AFO hired other villains as well. well of course he did. gotta keep chipping away at OFA’s ninth successor little by little
now Nagant is asking Hawks how he’s able to keep making “that” face. I assume she’s again talking about the fact that he somehow didn’t let the HPSC wear down his spirit
oh my god???
thanks for stuffing this chapter to the brim with good nutritional Hawks Feels, Horikoshi. what a good. he just keeps on trudging forward undeterred no matter what bullshit comes his way. what a steadfast little guy. I WILL PROTECT YOU FROM DISCOURSE MY SWEET SUNSHINE
lmaoooo
“SPOTTED THIS DUDE JUST CHILLING OUT THERE ON THE ROOF WITH NO ARMS, SEEMED PRETTY SUS” good job Endeavor
anyway so you don’t really need me to tell you that Overhaul is immediately starting in with the “BUT THE BOSS WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO TAKE ME TO THE BOSS YOU PROMISED YOU WOULD TAKE ME TO THE BOSS” stuff again. but I will go ahead and tell you anyway. so yeah. he’s doing that
OMG YOU GUYS LOOK AT DEKU’S “of all the fucking assholes to just randomly drop in on my life once again why did it have to be you” FACE THOUGH, OMG
fun fact, if you go back to chapters 124 through 160, there was an entire story arc where Overhaul imprisoned and tortured a little girl. yeah, I know!! suuuuuuuuper evil. anyways just an interesting little anecdote for you all that’s somewhat relevant to the current situation
OMG, YES. FUCK YES, DEKU
THEN WHAT ABOUT SPARING ONE FOR HER!!! YES!!! EXACTLY!!! JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, SOMEONE GETS IT
HERE’S THE PANEL OF DEKU SAYING THE EXACT SAME THING I’M SAYING LOL
(ETA: so apparently there’s some discourse about this because some people are interpreting this as Deku saying “you should apologize to Eri”, which would obviously be a terrible idea even if Overhaul actually wanted to do that, because Eri shouldn’t ever have to see him again. however I just want to point out that there is a HUGE difference between saying “it would be nice if you could direct that feeling of regret/being sorry towards Eri as well”, vs saying “you should also apologize to her.” all Deku is doing is rightfully pointing out that Overhaul has hurt way more people than just his boss, and if he really is remorseful, then he should extend those feelings of remorse to Eri and the rest as well. it’s not a directive to take any specific action, and I’m 1000% sure no one at U.A. would let Overhaul within 100 miles of Eri ever again.
tl;dr “try feeling remorse sometime” =/= “do you want me to fly you over to U.A. right now to surprise the little girl you traumatized”, lol.)
[slings an arm around Deku’s shoulders] you’re a good kid. I like you. I don’t know if I tell you that enough, but it’s true
meanwhile here is Overhaul’s “spare... a thought... for Eri...???????” face sigh
the struggle is real y’all
(ETA: and that’s... the last we ever saw of Overhaul, I guess? well all right then. I assume Deku will make good on his promise, so we know he’ll get that little bit of closure before going back to jail or whatever, and I confess I’m more than fine with leaving the rest of it open-ended, especially given his character’s history. I think this was pretty generous all things considered.)
lmao holy shit
All Might what did you do to those tiki torch guys?? did you thrash them. did you give ‘em those hands. did you deliver their own asses to them complete with a sticker reminding them Amazon Prime Day is on June 21. we missed out goddammit
so Endeavor, who wasn’t the one he was asking, is telling him that they captured (well let’s be real, Deku captured, give the credit where it’s due) Nagant and Overhaul. and so I guess they’re going to take Nagant to the ER now
fire is no one’s weakness
-- oh my GOD I scrolled down and audibly gasped
[is politely but firmly approached and asked to remove my arm from Deku’s shoulder by the physical manifestation of all this Dekuangst] “we’re sorry, he’s not allowed to have visitors right now” oh shit, my bad. [goes to stand behind a police barricade]
lmao what. did you run out of room on the previous page
what an exaggerated fade to black lmao
-- AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I actually can’t see what he’s reacting to so maybe I’m just seriously jumping the gun here lol, but THE HELL WITH IT. the next panel appears to be a cut to Haibori Forest, so I’m just gonna go ahead and declare that Deku ran off on his own all wounded to go have more Dekuangst, just like I manifested. now go call Katsuki goddammit
[scrolls three more inches down] oh
yeah so like I said, Deku is walking very slowly a few feet in front of Endeavor, who’s telling him to wait up. yep. we’ve all gotta be so careful to not just jump to conclusions. I know we’re excited but still
anyway, so! welcome back to Mt. Lady and Kamui Woods (ARE YOU GUYS DATING) and Edgeshot! have fun walking into this obvious trap lol
dammit Deku why are you so determined to tempt fate
[monkey puppet meme faces]
OH MY GOD THIS IS PURE GRADE-A CHEESY COMIC BOOK VILLAIN 101 SHIT AND I’M HERE FOR IT
that’s such a weird way of clapping who claps like that
unlike certain other people who shan’t be named, AFO doesn’t feel the need to inexplicably take his shirt off when recording sinister villain monologues. I think we’re all pretty grateful for that
high fives to everyone who called it!! yep yep
anyway so this whole scene has major booby-trap vibes, which I’m enjoying immensely even though I don’t think anything is really going to come of it lol. probably just another long-winded AFO Speech. but wouldn’t it be funny if like the ceiling started lowering down to try and squish Deku afterwards lol
(ETA: well the explosion was still pretty funny too ngl.)
ffff
[“Dekuangst is the trap” intensifies]
anyway so yeah. he’s just hitting up all of his usual villain talking points. we get it, you’re so smart and you see right through the thin veneers of society and people who don’t conform are left to fend for themselves and labeled as villains and history is written by the victors, and blah blah blah dude are you just jumping randomly from one soundbyte to another lol. literally what are you talking about. what does this have to do with you blowing up Nagant
-- holy shit??
[”Dekuangst is the trap” intensifies MORE?????]
LOL WHAT
BRO. WHAT IS WITH YOU. DON’T YOU KNOW HOW TO LAY ANY OTHER KIND OF FUCKING TRAP GOOD LORD
“YOU’RE NEXT” THE CALLBACK?? THE PARALLELS?? THOUGH WHEN ALL MIGHT POINTED HE MADE IT LOOK WAY COOLER. AFO’S POINTING JUST LOOKS LIKE SMOKEY THE BEAR
HAS ANYONE CHECKED IN ON KAMUI WOODS I HEAR HE IS WEAK TO FIRE?? THE ONLY ONE WHO IS, APPARENTLY
r.i.p. to this particular forest mansion. don’t worry they have a ton of backups
remember last week when I said maybe AFO thinks explosions are gauche. well never mind. he fucking loves explosions
anyway so that’s the end of BnHA, everyone. hope you enjoyed. it was a good ride while it lasted. see you all, good luck in your travels

BnHA Ch.318 - Comparisons and parallels
Hey, did you hear Bakugo was back? I kid! Of COURSE everyone on Tumblr heard the collective BKDK screams. :) While the gremlin ex machina is the big news, a lot of other good stuff happened too.
We open the chapter with more Endeavor chitchat. He’s turning out to be a good coordinator, an insightful investigator, and all around worthy of being a top pro…except he’s still a crap father and still doesn’t seem to care about human beings. Even here with Deku, he appears to express concern over Deku’s wellbeing but immediately follows it up with:
Yup, he only cares about Deku as the OFA holder, not the kid who saved him in the war, the kid who used to intern for him, or the kid who’s friends with his kid. Ugh.
Deku swears to Endy that he’s fine because he’s still on his feet, but that’s a pretty poor standard. I mean, he’s wobbling and needs Blackwhip as a literal crutch. The vestiges agree with Endy and start to gang up on Deku, so Deku, in all his tired teenage wisdom, decides to ghost them. Apparently you CAN ghost a vestige, and Fourth is not here for it.
Holy heteromorph discrimination! All the villains we see Deku fighting are heteromorphs (some are even dressed like Spinner). We also see Deku fighting a gigantic shark-headed villain in the water, presumably because Gang Orca and Selkie were busy.
I LOVE the panel of Deku thinking of his family, his teachers, and Eri. This is what he’s fighting to achieve, but Deku’s perceptions (goals?) don’t necessarily line up with reality.
His mom is first (awwww) and she’s cheering for him like she did when he was little. NOT worried, not crying, just pure joy for her hero son, like he fantasized when he was a quirkless boy.
Gran Torino in his hero outfit, smiling and eating — NOT as Deku last saw him in the hospital.
Proud Dadmight with a genuine smile, NOT hero All Might. Also, All Might appears to be wearing his track jacket, not a business suit, so presumably Deku is thinking about a more casual training moment with his mentor. This is an interesting contrast to Gran Torino, who Deku DOES picture as a hero even though Torino handed his cape to Deku in the hospital.
AIZAWA GLARING WITH BOTH EYES AND HIDING HIS MOUTH, because THIS is how Aizawa looks in Deku’s happily ever after. But we all know Aizawa is probably hiding a sly smile under under his capture weapon, right??
Eri, finally smiling freely, because she’s learned how.
Also, it looks like Deku is again fighting heteromorphs at the bottom of this panel, although one of the kids he’s defending appears to have a duck bill, so we have some positive representation too.
Deku says he wants everyone to live their lives in peace and safety so they can smile together. Wow, where have we heard an idealistic kid say that before?
As Deku thinks about the ideal he shares with All Might, he arrives at Kamino, the place where “All Might” ended. Deku nearly collapses and meets his end when he sees a villain called Dictator, who was sent by AFO. Yup, Nagant wasn’t the only one sent by AFO, she just thought she was (and AFO didn’t prep her well — by comparison, Dictator received a full briefing about Deku). But look carefully at how Dictator uses different insults than AFO. He doesn’t call Deku useless or a boy (as both AFO and Nagant did), even though the imagery throughout this chapter points to the “what can you even do?” bit from Chapter 1. Instead, Dictator calls Deku reckless, impatient, and a loner.
“Rampage” in particular, calls back to this AFO/Yoichi exchange during the vestige battle, where AFO decried “rage” as being ruled by emotion and out of control, but Yoichi praised it as a form of passion.
Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but I think AFO is increasingly afraid of Deku. AFO is putting more effort into prepping his assassins, and his pass-through insults are sounding more like the taunts he hurled at All Might. AFO is now referring to All Might as useless and Deku as reckless. If, somehow, we see Dictator in the next chapter, I’m curious if he’ll explode or bust out a second quirk…..He does say taking Deku to AFO will bring him security, so I think AFO explicitly threatened him. All I’m saying is, it’s weird that a villain named Dictator has no mission statement or political end he’s trying to reach. He seems to be acting purely on AFO’s orders or ELSE, which means AFO is getting desperate and doesn’t have time for games. By contrast, AFO persuaded Nagant the boy would stop hero society from collapsing, therefore her goal and AFO’s goal were aligned. Unlike Dictator, she wasn’t aware there was an “or else;” she didn’t know she would explode if she exercised “free will.”
Deku snaps out of his stupor long enough to challenge Dictator to give up AFO’s location. Dictator says if Deku wants a fight, he’ll give him one, which echoes a line from AFO in Kamino:
There’s no more “come quietly if you want to keep your limbs,” it’s straight to “let’s fight!”
FINALLY! We. See. Bakugo! I adore how Deku is piled under bodies, twisting his tired brain around, thinking “I need a strategy,” and Bakugo is just, “VILLAIN GO BOOM!” with a precision blast. He knew exactly how to get the villain while keeping civilians safe. Perfect victory (assuming Dictator is truly done). Also, Bakugo’s “that punk” could apply to either the villain or Deku. :) It’s a nice callback to the final exam when Deku can’t think of a strategy to win against All Might and Bakugo was, “I choose violence against my childhood idol.” Both times, Bakugo’s right — sometimes a little rage is necessary to save and win.
I have thoughts on AFO and the “my body moved without thinking” bits that I’ll post separately. As for my next chapter hopes and dreams:
More Bakugo and UA kids. Plus All Might and Stain. And some LOV love pleeeeease.
Figure out why Second is being sus. He says saving everyone is the right path for Deku (contrary to AFO, who calls Deku’s path “thorny”), and that inaction is not an option for OFA holders. We also know Second believes victory = life and defeat = death, so it makes sense he’d push Deku towards victory no matter the cost. Second also says there’s something that can bolster Deku, which is presumably Bakugo and friends. However, when Bakugo arrives, Second doesn’t look pleased. Assuming he’s standing the same way against his throne chair as he is at the start of the chapter, then in the panel below Second is looking over his LEFT shoulder AWAY from the other vestiges and towards the expanse of the OFA mind realm. (Earlier in the chapter he looks over his RIGHT shoulder to speak to Yoichi and Third.) WHY YOU LOOK AWAY FROM VESTIGE FRIENDS WHEN WHEN BAKUGO APPEARS??? ARE YOU ON THE LOOKOUT FOR AFO TO ARRIVE??
Although the arrival of foreign heroes has been promised for a bit, and I’m ok with some background forces to bulk the hero ranks, I’m not keen on new cannon fodder cameo characters that will show up for 4 chapters and then disappear. A Captain Celebrity appearance would be fun, but let’s be honest, he likely noped out of going to Japan to fight villains gone wild. If Death Arms quit, there’s no way Captain Celebrity would keep going!

Hi please ramble about how much Nighteye SUCKS (either in HAOT or canon) bc ur rambling is very on point it gives me l i f e (don’t do it if u don’t want to tho)
i’m not gonna rant about “heroics and other things that don’t require superpowers” because that fic is going to contain plenty of ranting a few chapters from now, but i will absolutely go off about canon nighteye.
i fucking hate how canon tries to imply that nighteye is a basically good person who’s been driven to extremes of behavior by his desire to save all might. that’s literally not what’s happening here at all. he has been a toxic influence on all might from the beginning, because he perceives his “love” for all might as giving him a kind of ownership. he believes he has the right to dictate all might’s life to him because nighteye thinks he knows best because of his quirk, and if he knows best then what other people want doesn’t matter.
let’s talk about boundaries.
a boundary is a rule that a person sets in place to maintain their comfort. it could be “i don’t work weekends” or “i don’t have sex when i’m drunk” or even “i don’t like to be touched.” all might has set multiple boundaries with nighteye, and nighteye had disrespected every single one. the most egregious form of boundary violation is violation of bodily autonomy, ie. rape, institutionalization, forced medical procedures, etc. however, violations of any boundary are serious business, and nighteye has crossed both physical and emotional boundaries with all might.
first, all might didn’t want sidekicks. he didn’t think he could trust a sidekick with his secret, so he decided to just not have any. however, he broke this rule to make nighteye his sidekick. that wasn’t his idea. he didn’t see nighteye’s career and go “hm, i think i can make an exception for him.” nighteye came to all might asking to be his sidekick. we don’t know exactly how he went about convincing all might, but we can extrapolate that it wasn’t a snap decision for all might. canon tells us that nighteye was his sidekick for less than a decade, and that was less than a decade ago. all might has been in business for like 40 years. he was well established as the symbol of peace before nighteye came along. he didn’t need nighteye, he had no reason to break his personal rule. nighteye was the one who crossed his boundary to gain entrance into all might’s life.
that’s already super sus but let’s continue.
second, all might didn’t want to tell too many people his secret. whether the decision to tell nighteye about ofa came bundled with the decision to take him on as a sidekick we don’t know, but we know that was another boundary nighteye crossed. again, all might didn’t, like, watch nighteye at the sports festival and decide to tell him. it was nighteye’s efforts that put pressure on all might to tell him the truth.
thirdly, all might didn’t want nighteye to use his quirk on him. we know this for a fact: it’s told to us in a flashback in which all might gets justifiably angry about the betrayal. this is a hard physical boundary that all might set with nighteye, and nighteye violated it to look into his future and see how he would die. that’s treated like a small thing, but it’s not at all! that is a huge violation of trust! nighteye’s quirk involves touching someone! setting aside the metaphysical headfuck nighteye’s future vision seems to be, he touched all might with the intent to violate his wishes! that’s super fucking not ok! and then he uses what he learned to try and manipulate all might into doing what he wanted, retiring directly following his injury at the hands of afo. thankfully all might decided there that nighteye’s actions were too big a breach of trust to keep nighteye in his life, but that was a serious decision made with very good justification.
fourthly, and this is a bit weirder because the boundary is fuzzy but the action is unforgiveable, nighteye disregards all might’s choice of successor and tries to undermine izuku’s confidence to make him give up one for all to mirio.
holy.
fucking.
shit.
like, i guess you could say that it’s an implied boundary rather than a stated boundary, but all might giving izuku his quirk (which cannot be taken by force) is a pretty strong declaration of his wishes! all might chose izuku for his successor! that is not something nighteye gets to question! and it’s certainly not a thing he gets to try to circumvent by destroying izuku’s confidence! nighteye’s not stupid, he could tell that this was a huge decision for all might and he did not make it lightly. he knew that izuku was important to all might. but he still attacked izuku. he still took him on as a work study student with the express purpose of undermining his confidence. everything he did and said to izuku was a direct attack on all might’s decision, all might’s right to choose. because nighteye doesn’t think all might deserves the right to choose if he’s going to make choices nighteye doesn’t like.
because that’s the thing isn’t it? all might isn’t a person to nighteye. he’s a thing. a thing that nighteye has decided his has ownership of. he thinks he knows best and so he’s the only one who gets to make decisions. all might is at best a child who doesn’t know what’s good for him, and at worst a doll that has no relevant opinion at all. all might isn’t allowed to have boundaries if nighteye doesn’t like them. he isn’t allowed to make decisions if nighteye doesn’t agree. and nighteye will do anything to gain and maintain the control over all might and his choices that he thinks he deserves.
tl;dr nighteye is toxic as fuck and always has been, thanks for coming to my ted talk.

I am so glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like unnecessary character bashing in AUs where Mirio gets OfA instead (I say as someone who has two AUs where Mirio gets OfA and in both bad things happen to him, but he still tries his best and I can't fault him for that). I think FMW was definitely a partial influence for that one lol. So how would you do a OfA!Mirio thing?
Well, loaded ask there but
1- he has to refuse the call at first. Mirio shouldn't jump at the chance, because he knows he doesn't need it and others can do better by it. He's proud of his own work, so if you want him to have OfA, he's got to be convinced. Maybe know that others were offered and turned it down, maybe there was some other extenuating circumstances, but he refuses the call at first. I'd offer it to Nejire if not also Tamaki, at the very least.
2- I take out stations of canon. Mirio having OfA would mean All Might is teaching third years, not first years. If the villains attack UA, they'd attack a third year class, or they'd go for when Toshinori is in transit. Considering Shigaraki wanted that bit of drama and flare, he'd probably go for something with an audience, so a class or somewhere All Might was in the public. The rest of the school year would be very altered with no usj. We're going full Juxtapose.
3- Tamaki calls bs if Mirio tries to write it off as normal and just part of his quirk. This isn't just the otp talking, there's no way he wouldn't notice something very sus is up. So he gets to be the secret keeper. Nejire would know because it was offered to her too.
4- I already disregard the "oh OfA kills it's quirked hosts" in canon because there's such a useless sample size and makes no sense as Toshi's secret. I'm absolutely disregarding it here, and I sideeye all the other authors who wrote (non afo) quirked izuku with ofa who said they'd disregard it for him but not Mirio. It'd maybe be interesting as a plot point to discuss and disregard but meh. I'm not sure if I'd keep the extra quirks or if I'd just say you need to be quirkless to unlock them. Honestly I just kind see Mirio not using them most of the time. Maybe float if he's totally incapacitated otherwise, but like... I really think if he found out this extra quirk he didn't even want originally came with extra quirks he also doesn't want he'd just. Lock them in a mental box far away from use.
5- I keep the miribro. Maybe izuku has a quirk. Maybe he's quirkless. Maybe it's dfo. But regardless, they're friends!! I like how they play off each other and Izuku deserves nice things like that
#boss the goofball#pocket talks to people#it would be.... a lot of work to write#so i won't#buti think about it sometimes#ask game#sometimes i do daydream about Shiggy attacking a third year class at usj and getting so utterly wrecked before All Might shows up though#it puts a smile on my face

it's not even the appearance itself that makes it sus for me it's the fact that hori keeps going to lengths to hide user 2 n 3's identities and makes number 2 look just vague enough to where it could be bakugou or it could be some random pro that looks like him, muscular situation basically. but then why is the appearance hidden if that part specifically isnt a spoiler? why is it intentionally questionable? WHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE BAKUBOY MORE AND MORE EVERYTIME WE SEE IT????
i wouldn't be as worried if baku had an endgame or a villain or a mentor but he has nothing. if he ends up stuck as number 2 with deku as number 1 in the future (which he would be unless there's some major asspull that happend that super levels up explosion, bc that's six+ quirk deku he'd have to compete against) that's lame. if deku ends up dying leaving katsuki to be number 1 that's also lame he'd never accept a win like that. in heroes rising the og ending katsuki was super involved in the ofa storyline. what else is he supposed to do....
i hate this theory bc on one hand it sounds like pure crap, but on the other hand it has just enough vague evidence to not let you just dismiss it like say dad for one theory. ugh
It was pointed out to me that “come on Bakugou would never wear such a crap excuse of the clothes” and I feel better now, haha:) it really looks like that shit Naruto was wearing in shippuden.
On a serious note yeah, I don’t see why Hori would hide their appearances if not for the fact we know them and it’s gonna be “holy guacamole what????” moment. If sensei just reveals them to be random dudes I’d forever consider him the superior troll and mangaka. Makes me wonder WHO IS THIS THIRD GUY, I HAVE ZERO CLUE?!
The second movie type of endgame would be more acceptable for me really. But with that out of question...the opportunities you’ve mentioned are obviously “god no” so I don’t see how to go from where we are (in case it’s really Bakugou) to the origin trio are amazing, doing great being the number 1,2,3 heroes, opening an agency together ...
oh sorry got carried away with my headcanons.
Every endgame is fine with me as long as Bakugou character isn’t sacrificed for the sake of mc.

Boku No Hero Academia Chapter 284 SPOILERS
(BK: I am concern. MI: Fuck you and your concern )

Deku is in the air thinking about how he can't let Shiggy touch the ground and of course Black Whip picks this exact moment to get harder to controll.
Izuku drops everyone, sans Shigaraki, on the ground and puts them on babysitting duty for GT and Eraser while he heads off BY HIMSELF. Endeavour is talking about how pathetic he is cause he's still cooling off and Bakugou is screaming at Midoriya with what seems to be actual, honest to god concern about how Shigaraki has all his quirks back now that Aizawa is KO. Deku is all "Who else is gonna keep Shigaraki in the air and both Bakugou and Endeavour get this i-want-to-help-but-i-dont-know-how looks on their faces.
OMG SHIGARAKI LOL. I swear Horikoshi is giving him the best lines these days.
Bakugou still has this pained expression on his face as he watches Midoriya literally charge full speed towards death itself and we get a flashback to someone asking about training.
GSJSHSJDHHW MIDORIYA'S HAIR. I mean, he do be looking kinda good with that afro tho.
Ok so Ochako is there to help Izuku practice how to not slam face first into a wall when he unlocks Float, which explains why he's so good at it. Tsu ask why they didn't just ask Aizawa and AM says he's still processing the whole Shiragiri thing. Obviously he didn't tell the kids exactly like that but that's what he meant.
Of course Gang Orca has his own brand of water.
Hmmm. Is OFA gonna get revealed in this chapter? Probably not.
We love character development in this house.
(Edit: Ok so Viz has taken Katsuki trusting Deku away from us but has given us Katsuki being hella worried instead, which was already pretty obvi but I'll take it anyway)
Katsuki's right, that's mad sus. Why was it scribbled out Toshinori? Bakugou calls out All Might for keeping secrets and asks if he figured out the true nature of OfA but All Might cuts him of with a sharp "NO". Then he changes the subject completely by saying he's concerned about Katsuki's and Izuku's growth. Idk Toshi that's mad sus. You shouldn't be keeping secrets about OFA dude.
Use to? As in it doesn't any more? My boy has grown so much. Also, DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD MIGHT DAD-
But...?!?!?! But what? You can't just cut him off there that's not fair. I was feeding off of the Dad Might energy too :(
I just love how Endeavour, the No. 1 Hero , has been bossed a round by a bunch of 16yr olds since this fight started. Like, get your shit together old man. You really gonna let these teenagers out shine you?
Ok but this panel looks so cool. That 75% is biting Shiggy real hard in the ass rn.
Izuku is getting ready to punch the ever loving shit out of Shigaraki. He's putting everything into this punch.
WELL THAT DOESN'T FILL ME WITH ANY COFIDENCE WHATSOEVER.
It literally looks like Shigaraki just exploded.
Anyway. Now people have their answer on why Izuku was able to control Float as soon as he unlocked it.
I feel like the fact that Black Whip is getting harder to control is gonna come back and bite him in the ass. And what was all that about the 4th user? Why was his quirk scribbled out? What are you hiding Toshinori?
Character development from Bakugou is always a win. Him saying he trusts Deku is a pretty big fucking deal. Also Dad Might.
That ending is nerve racking and I would very much like to know what Yagi said to Bakugou.
Until next time.

hey remember that time a couple of weeks ago when i translated some bnha leaks
because i found some today from @trashformha and i’m going to Make Another Attempt
edited bc i messed up one bit!!! i mean, i’ve messed up many, but still
so, basically, they’re all fucked. there’s a threat too big, even for all of these heroes.
bubble 1: nani teki wa hitori! kore wo uteneba
i don’t really get the first bit, because i’m nowhere near fluent. “nani” is, as we all know “what?” and “teki” is “opponent”
therefore i’m thinking it’s basically “which opponents are alone,” or something along those lines, for now
there’s a familiar “u” for “utsu,” in “uteneba,” and “ute” is an imperative of that. “ba” is kind of an “if, and” particle, i think. before i get a headache, i’m just going to try and summarise that bubble, like. fuck it i’m making logic bounces. “the opponent is alone! attack that way”
bubble 2: nanno tame no HERO houwajidai ka
“nanno” is, like, “what kind,” and “tame” is, as usual, basically “sake.” the “no” makes that possessive, too
you’re not gonna believe what “hero” means
whenever i look up “houwajidai,” it. OH. this is basically “what good is the age of the saturation of heroes!”
“a single opponent attacking this way! what use is this age of hero saturation?”
-
oh, cool!!! we’ve got rock lock, aizawa, and manual? Dad Squad!!!!!!!!!
bubble 1: “masshou” wa kaijyou shite nai...!
“masshou” is “erasure” so that’s pretty simple. “kaijyou” is “cancelling,” though jfc it’s so hard to make out the kanji that i had to use waifu2x, which made it worse, bc it’s not designed for words. and, “shite nai,” that’s just the te-form of “suru” with a negative attached, which basically means “being unable to”
so! “erasure isn’t working...!”
bubble 2: kanpeki na ... noumu tte wake ka...!
“kanpeki na,” is just adjectiving “perfect” for the noun, which is “noumu.” so, like, “the perfect noumu”
“tte,” is like “to say; as for,” you know, like all that. “wake” is like, a reasonable conclusion, or just “circumstances,” which is really kind of vague, dude
“my “erasure” isn’t working...! the perfect... noumu is...!”
i can conclude that, while aizawa can erase every quirk that belongs to a normal noumu (when he’s aware that he has to erase more than one quirk; he could not do so in the initial usj encounter until he’d been told that the noumu had multiple quirks), he cannot erase the quirks of a high-end noumu
we saw earlier in this arc, even, when it was still a hospital raid, that the narrative didn’t let aizawa use his quirk on them before
-
here’s the long-awaited Gran Slam. he just. slaps izuku and kacchan to the ground
bubble 1: kokora de iika
“kokora” is “hereabout” and “iika” is “listen.” he’s saying “listen here.” unless it’s “ii ka,” in which case, he’s saying “is here fine?”
bubble 2: ima shita ni aizawa-sensei ga!!
i don’t need to note this out at all. “aizawa-sensei’s down there now!!”
bubble 3: aa, shigaraki no “kosei” wo fuujitoru
the first bit is, “ah, shigaraki’s quirk” but “quirk” is in quotation marks, because that’s how it’s indicated in japanese, i guess, while we capitalise it to indicate that It’s A Special Thing; Not The Normal Word
“fuujiru” is a verb that means, like, “seal” or “block.” this is unlike “azarashi,” which is a Good Seal. you know, a selkie friend
i’d hazard that this is, like, “ah, shigaraki’s quirk is blocking everything”
bubble 4: shii-san motto hanareta hou ga iidaro!!
“hanareta” is past tense of “hanareru,” which is, “to leave; to get further away; to lose connection,” and “hou” is, in this case, i think, “direction.” “daro” seems like a shortening of “darou,” which is indicating a question, like “don’t you think?”
so, “shii-san’s got even further away, don’t you think!?”
bubble 4: jii-san motto hanareta hou ga ii daro!!
“how the fuck did this old guy get us so far away!!?”
bubble 4.5: “gran torino, kacchan wa...” which is basically “gran torino and kacchan are...” (or “huh...”) he’s introducing his other mentor to his... to his rabid pomeranian
bubble 5: OFA no kyouyuusha jyaro toshinori kara kiitoru
just so you know, the mention of “toshinori” has my brain going “!!! :D !!!”
“kyouyuusha” is “joint owners,” essentially. “jya” is just “da” in regional dialect, making “jyaro” “daro.” “kiku” can be “listen” or “ask” which sucks, but “kara” is “from,” which i know
“didn’t toshinori tell you about joint owners of one for all?” or, “didn’t you ask toshinori about joint holders of one for all?”
bubble 5 but the other half: koko ga gendo jya bakugou
“here,” a particle that indicates a specific subject, “limits,” particle indicating existence, “bakugou”
"here, you are limited, bakugou”
so!!! gran torino dumps them somewhere. he says, “around here should be fine.”
“sensei’s down there, now!” says izuku.
i think it’s kacchan who says he then says, “ugh, shigaraki’s quirk is blocking everything.”
to that, izuku says, “he’s gotten even further away, hasn’t he? gran torino, kacchan, i...”
to that, kacchan says, “how the fuck did that old dude get us so far away!!?”
then, gran torino says, “didn’t you hear from toshinori about joint owners of one for all? here, you’re limited, bakugou.”
and, while izuku tries to introduce kacchan to gran torino, gran torino says, “i’m the co-owner of one for all, basically. didn’t toshinori tell you? you’re limited here, bakugou.”
tbh i initially thought we’d switched to the league, because “shii-san” is. so weird. i could only imagine toga calling him that
-
oh no. he’s talking about aizawa
bubble 1: washi wa ERASER no ashi ni nari ni modoru
“washi” is just an old man personal pronoun. “ashi” is foot, and, with the particle added, i think it’s “by foot,” as a mode of transportation. “nari ni” is, like, doing things your own way. “modoru” is, in essence “to return”
in this case, i think “wa” is used as a comparison, rather than a topic marker. so, it’s like
“eraser and i both take our own paths.”
bubble 2: kakurete rotte ...... koto desu ka!?
“kakureru” is a verb meaning “to hide,” combined with a bunch of te-forms
“we’re being hidden... is that it?”
bubble 3: yatsu wa ALL FOR ONE no “kosei” wo ijyoku sareta rashii
“yatsu” is just. “him. that guy. blergh.” but “ijyoku,” is. it’s like. it’s “working from your house.” i don’t get it. and “sareru” is the passive form of “suru,” “to do.” so it’s “to be done.” and “rashii” is like. like. ish. seeming
“it’s like all for one’s quirk is working through him”
as in, like, it’s the quirk that’s really doing it, or all for one is puppeteering him from tartarus
little bubble-less text next to gran torino: DJ HERO ga ittotta
“it’s like the dj hero was saying,”
i think so, anyway
bubble 4: man ga ichi ONE FOR ALL ga ubawarete mo shitara...
“man ga ichi,” “if by any chance,” or so the jisho collocation says. it also says “ten-thousand to one,” which is more what i was thinking
“ubawareru,” or, “to steal.” i keep forgetting this, though it’s growing more familiar, and “mo,” is like, “in addition to.” like “inu mo neko mo minna suki” as “i love every one of them; dogs and cats!”
“shitara” seems to be past tense of “suru” and also a supposition, so:
“if there’s a chance, no matter how small, that one for all could be stolen...”
and, subsequently: “saiaku” wo kangaero
and i don’t think i need help translating this. i know “aku” and i know “kangae”
“if there’s any chance that one for all could be stolen, the villains will have won.”
-
a lot of the kanji and such are blurred, so i’m doing my best, but it’s going to be super vague and not very notey
panel 1 top: “kosei” jya nai...!! su no... chikara...!!?
“it’s not a quirk...!! that power... is his own!!?”
panel 1 bottom 1: ano chouyaku(?) mo sou datta no ka!?
“was that jump also due to it!?”
panel 1 bottom 2: furuu dakede sora suru jiyuu ni - !
i have, like, half a clue with this one, sorry
“by simply wielding it, he’s free in the sky!”
panel 2: sonna chikara... marude
“that power... it’s just like-”
bubble 1: ALL MIGHT ni wa oyobanu teido jya gana!
the bubbles are a lot clearer, so
“oyobanu.” i have no idea. it’s, like, “oyabu” is “to reach; to measure up to,” and “nu” seems to be turning it into a negative, but i have no idea what tense it’s supposed to be.
“teido” is a suffix for a noun as in “degree, amount,” so i think the “nu” nouned the “oyabu”
“gana” is kind of airy with its meaning. is it, like “wouldn’t it be nice if...” or is it making things uncertain, or is it being empathetic? where does the “jya” fit in? is it a “jyaa” or a “da?”
“don’t you think he could reach the impossible standards set by all might?”
bubble 2: karada no kado na kaizou wa nou ni fuka ga kakaru
“kado” - “excessive. “kaizou” - “remodelling; reformatting.” “nou” - “brain.” “fuka” - “burden; strain.” “kakaru” - who the fuck has a clue
“the excessive remodelling of his body allows his brain to handle this burden”
-
bubble 1: tasukarimasu, MANUAL-san
...yeah. i checked. he’s being so polite and he is breaking my heart
“please save them, manual”
bubble 2: bunryou kajyou ni naru to kaette shimite
“bunryou” - “amount,” “kajyou” - “excess”
“ni naru to” is a bunch of particles and shit, equating to “when it becomes”
“shimete” is, like, “to touch; pierce; sting; permeate; influence; impress”
for now, i think it means something along the lines of “you have a bunch of kids to get back to and influence,” but it’s all dependent on bubble 3
edit: i saw “kae” and thought “ah, kaeru; return!” and it’s not!!! it’s “instead!!!”
bubble 3: me wo tsumutte shimaimasunde... iki awasemashou!
“me wo tsumutte” is just, “close your eyes.”
“shimaimasu” is a polite conjugation of “shimau,” or “to end; complete.”
the “nda” means, funnily enough, “and”
“awasemashou,” i think, means, like, “let’s do it together!”
“when the excess amount you take on instead starts to sting, close your eyes, stop, and we’ll breathe together!”

How the hell did AFO know the moment Nagant would have had a change of heart to even detonate her?
It's very in character for him to slip something like that to her but it's the timing. Did that boning quirk is combined with some tracking quirk where he can feel how she feels? Does he have cameras everywhere? I'm now more scared for Izuku
Thank you for asking this question! Yesterday, I was in full conspiracy theory mode because of the leaks. Because yes, slipping an additional quirk is almost expected from him but the riming is absolutely sus.
Here is what AFO says right before he activates his failsafe, so to speak. Please, know that this is an unofficial translation.
"Hearts... can be swayed easily. Which is why I made sure to prepare for her potential failure."
The most simple answer is to focus on the "failure" part and that AFO was monitoring Nagant's state through Search. When Izuku broke Nagant's arm, AFO comes to the conclusion that she couldn't win the fight anymore.
It was either to incapacitate Izuku (probably also monitored by Search so he knows how close he was to her) or to send a message "Oh, you want to save villains? Too bad."
But then, why mention the "Hearts can easily be swayed" part? Did he guess in advance that izuku would manage to convince her? It's not too far-fetched since he predicted that Izuku would leave UA but how did he know that she had only lost or that she had lost + Izuku was about to make her an ally?
I have three working theories for now.
1. Either AFO guessed that Nagant wouldn't be able to do the job and used Search to know when she was out of the fight.
2. Search can detect weakness and somehow indicated that Nagant's will was crumbling.
3. By giving Nagant a quirk he had for a while, AFO was able to keep an eye on her some other way, maybe a weaker version of what he used on Shigaraki.
4. He can hear what Izuku hears through OFA.
In any case, it's really sus and I am keeping my eyes open to find more clues in the next chapter.

Here’s my answers here! Don’t know why I posted my answers in an ask before, considering I hate cluttering ask boxes, but I’ll post them here for good measure:
It takes place in modern time, Yoichi’s just an immortal 20-year old
Yea, izuku still goes to UA! He got in by doing the shockwave clap on the robot’s mainframe (he jumped on the thing with like...no hesitation, and climbed his way up) he fell from there and Ochako saved him, boom, both of them pass
Yea, and it’s sort of Aizawa’s pet peeve project. His quirk is near perfect to take this group down, as all of them have what I call “pseudo-quirks”, or quirks that aren’t tied to the quirk factor, but instead given by Yoichi. All aizawa has to do is figure out which one yoichi is, and boom, all of them are down. However, seeing as Yoichi’s been keeping them all alive for decades, aizawa would get the lovely image of several bodies rapidly decaying.
All might is still the top hero, and his struggle for a successor is translated into finding OFA a “ninth.” Here’s the thing: because Yoichi’s ability is so powerful, he has to be very careful with who he gives this ability to. For one, it can only be given to a truly quirkless person (as quirks & pseudo-quirks don’t work well together when stacked on one body), for another, he tends to limit the members of the group only one “successor” at a time (for example, Daigoro was hikage’s only successor, En was Daigoro’s, Nana was En’s, etc., etc,)
The reason why he does that is because he wants to keep it small: the smaller the group, the less expectant AFO is that they’re coming
Second point for all might, he went off on his own after nana’s “death” by AFO to make his own name (he’s still connected to them, but he isn’t as close to OFA as he probably should be). As a consequence of that, Izuku ends up being taught by most of the group instead of his predecessor like how it often is, since all might’s still got the #1 hero job. He still checks in, but other than that, he’s absent.
Some extras under the read-more:
The shie hassaikai could be taken down earlier? Like, not at its place in canon, but not like, izuku’s first mission (so, I’d say around finals is when the hassaikai is taken down)
I changed some quirks to fit a group better instead of a typical shonen protag:
Second’s Pseudo is all the good parts of Toga & Twice’s quirks: he can shapeshift, but he has to know the exact measurements of the person to do so
Haven’t thought of a replacement for third’s quirk just yet
En’s pseudo is turning himself invisible
Each member, when inducted, gains a sort of immortality that gives them the ability to heal from fatal injuries (Yoichi doesn’t have this healing ability tho, since he’s the source of it)
The immortality thing for each of the holders means that if they had, say, a certain blond boy’s grenade gauntlet blow up in their face, causing essentially half of their head to be cracked open like a walnut? They could survive that, and mend themselves to look like it never happened (side note, bakugo’s traumatized by seeing izuku do just that).
Izuku didn’t just learn physical strength! Melee weapons and training with guns was also a thing he had to do, especially how to disarm someone holding either
Aizawa’s incredibly sus @ izuku, since izuku’s quirk can’t be erased. He can’t prove anything, tho...yet.
That’s it for now!
Y’know, I’ve been reading some of your AUs on AO3, and I think I’ve just thought of one: a one for all vigilante AU.
Basically, the AU is that One for All isn’t a quirk, but instead a vigilante group that takes down villains, yakuza, etc.
First/Yoichi got a mix of quirks from AFO that, combined with his original quirk, caused him to gain a quirk that can:
Give a quirkless person a quirk (or pseudo-quirks)
Keep that person from dying (think like how pmmm does that)
Cause a mental connection from him to the person
Izuku gains an acceleration/deceleration quirk (a five-finger touch quirk that has one hand accelerate, one hand decelerate. He can clap them together to create shockwaves.
I don’t want this to be too long, so I’ll stop here.
Oooh, I love this! Is this set in the early age of quirks, with Yoichi still being young? Or is it set in current times, with Yoichi still behing around via his imortality-like quirk? Does Izuku go to UA? Are the heroes trying to take down One for All? Is All Might still the top hero, secretly part of this shadey vigilante group? So many questions!!!
#one for all group au#hey-hamlet#I left like a longass ask answering & giving additional info#‘m sorry dude#here u go tho#boku no hero academia#izuku midoriya#yoichi shigaraki#my hero academia

BnHA Chapter 288: ZOOM AND ENHANCE
Previously on BnHA: Tomura, AFO, Deku, and Nana all met up inside of OFA and were all, “wow this is awkward.” AFO talked a whole bunch about vestiges before realizing that nobody cared (EXCEPT FOR ME. I CARED!!), and was then all “anyway so just to get everyone up to speed here, Tomura is Nana’s grandson.” OFA appeared and was all “what up bro I see you’re still a dick”, and then everyone stood around for a bit waging psychokinetic war on each other and blowing up on the ground and shit. This didn’t really accomplish anything, so AFO shifted gears and started trash talking Deku instead, because he’s a whiny little punkass loser who can’t admit when his brother has gotten the best of him yet again! OFA was all “anyways Deku rules and haters gonna hate, peace”, and then everyone wooshed back out of OFA and back into the real world, Deku with his quirk still intact. Meanwhile Gigantomachia and the LoV stampeded ever closer to the city, and Toga started monologuing in preparation for a seemingly inevitable battle with Ochako! And then the chapter basically just ended there lol.
Today on BnHA: Imagine you are Uraraka Ochako. And you’re out here doing what you do best, saving bitches and being a badass, when all of a sudden some old lady runs up to you and is all “PLEASE HELP ME, MY HUSBAND IS ASLEEP OR SOME SHIT, YOU KNOW US OLD PEOPLE, WE’RE SO FUCKING FEEBLE AND HAPLESS.” And so you’re all “OF COURSE” because you’re a good fucking person, and then she speeds off like she’s got fucking wheels and it’s like damn, grandma, were you in varsity track or what, and then OUT OF NOWHERE she just spontaneously turns into HIMIKO FUCKING TOGA. And she’s all naked and shit, and it’s like damn, Toga, where are your clothes, and she just giggles and ducks into a nearby building. And so you follow her for god knows what reason, and she fucking pounces on you and starts interrogating you in like the most seductive way possible, and you’re all wtf is this. Like, can you even imagine. Anyway so Ochako is having quite a day.
okay lol so I’ve gotta kind of rush through this since I’ve got other stuff I need to wrap up today as well, so! fingers crossed that we get a nice, simple chapter with no controversies or elaborate revelations or anything like that! just give me lots of stuff to mindlessly keysmash about, Horikoshi. I’m counting on you bro
lol what
an actual fucking plane?? is that allowed?? how bizarrely normal. are we sure this plane does not shoot lasers or something or is powered by someone with like a fusion reactor quirk idk
and who tf is Takeo-san. some random guy Horikoshi is suddenly introducing after 300 chapters to come save everyone at the last minute? pretty sus. Horikoshi is this your self insert
GASP
NO WAY THIS IS ALL MIGHT, RIGHT?? holy shit I swear to god if it’s All Might this lady needs to TURN THE FUCK AROUND RIGHT NOW. stop at McDonalds, order a black coffee for herself and only herself, and drive the rest of the way back home without so much as a bathroom break. there are certain prophecies which we don’t need to be tempting right now, okay people?? holy shit
(ETA: OR, here’s a thought, WHAT IF IT’S BEST JEANIST. hope springs eternal lmao. anyways though surely it’s not actually All Might. he can’t die yet, he’s got like 5 million secret things he needs to explain to Deku, and also Kacchan is unconscious and he can’t just SLEEP RIGHT THROUGH ALL MIGHT’S DEATH like come on.)
oh look more heroes all lining up to be slaughtered by Machia
real talk, at this point their priority should just be evacuating any citizens in Machia’s path, and then getting the fuck out of his way. none of them stand a chance in hell at stopping him and they know it. the body count is already high enough as it is. regroup and live to fight another day, people
anyway, so Machia is apparently plowing through cities at 100km per hour. that... actually might not be fast enough. Gunga and Jakku were 80km apart, so at that rate it would take him nearly an hour to reach Tomura. that fight’s gonna be long done by the time they get there. huh
okay these guys are saying he’s going to reach them in about 8 minutes. ?? so are you telling me Tomura and Deku and the rest have been fighting for like 40 minutes already?? lmao Gran probably bled to death half an hour ago at this rate. Horikoshi please explain yourself. some of us spent our entire childhoods doodling comics instead of paying attention in math and science AND IT SHOWS
anyway so this is all very bad and this guy is really rubbing it in just how bad it is
I mean... yeah. obviously the villains are still to blame at the core of it all, but yeah. feels like you all could have planned a hell of a lot better for this. you knew there was the risk of Tomura waking up, and you knew there was also the risk of Gigantomachia waking up as well. and you pretty much had no contingency plan at all huh. society is really gonna be in shambles after this
lmao look at this shit. Machia is so big at this point that it looks like they’re having a picnic in the middle of some desert somewhere. at what point does it cease being a guy’s back and start being its own zip code
even has its own wifi. amazing
oh shit Compress apparently spotted someone and he’s asking Skeptic to “zoom and enhance” like it’s CS fucking I. that’s not how it works Compress you fucking boomer
anyway so OF COURSE,
was there a reason you needed to zoom in on them, other than to trigger Toga?? some people just want to watch the world burn
so Toga is now GEARIN’ UP!!
that honestly is so fucking handy. over at U.A. they have to carry their gear in briefcases like scrubs. does Compress actually have the best quirk in the world?? it flies under the radar so well that I always forget about it, but like WHAT CAN’T IT DO though, y’know??
WELL WHAT DID YOU THINK WAS GONNA HAPPEN MY DUDE
“oh hey is that the U.A. kids? Skeptic could you please zoom in on them for absolutely no reason? OH MY GOD TOGA IS RUNNING OFF TO FIGHT THEM, OH MY GOD WHO COULD HAVE FORESEEN, OH MY GOD”
now he’s all “DABI PLEASE DO SOMETHING” but Dabi is all “DABI DON’T CARE”
Dabi don’t care about NOTHING OR NO ONE!! Dabi don’t got time for this
lmao I literally forgot that Spinner was even there, shit
so are you gonna go with her then or not? because I got news for you dude, it doesn’t matter how heartwarming your speech is, nothing can stop this girl now that she’s gone full distracted boyfriend meme
AW BUT IT REALLY IS HEARTWARMING THOUGH
Spinner is the glue keeping this dysfunctional Addams family together honestly. too bad he couldn’t stop Compress from OPENING HIS BIG DUMB MOUTH ah well
lmao but he’s letting her go anyway though
Spinner for new LoV President. all in favor??
ANYWAYS LOL THIS IS BAD
“ACCELERATE EVACUATIONS” LOL WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO OCHAKO HE’S MOVING AT 100KM AN HOUR AND HE’S LIKE FUCKING GODZILLA SIZED FKJLK
“PLEASE RUN OUTSIDE OF THE VILLAIN’S PERIPHERY” well thank fucking god the people have you guys to guide them what would they even do without you lklkhlkds
NO HORIKOSHI DON’T YOU DARE
IF YOU HURT MY GIRL FROPPY I SWEAR TO GOD!! LEAVE HER ALONE YOU BRIGAND
OH THANK GOD
“sorry for SAVING YOUR LIFE” smh. anyway so how fucking badass is Ochako though?? can we just talk about this. THE GIRL POWER ARC STRIKES AGAIN hot damn
(ETA: and btw, seeing as Iida is nowhere to be found, I’d say odds are pretty good that they did in fact send him to go warn the Endeavorsquad of Gigantomachia’s imminent arrival. godspeed Iida! they need all the help they can get right now honestly.)
EXCUSE ME BUT ARE YOU TOGA
IS THIS TOGA. THIS IS DEFINITELY TOGA OMG
“I IMMEDIATELY TRUST YOU AND I WILL FOLLOW YOU TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH” noooo Ochako nooooo
damn Toga you really drained some poor old lady’s blood just so you could pull this kind of sneaky shit. I forgot how much I loved you
ohhhh lol so it’s her “husband” that is Takeo-san lol
THE BETTER TO LURE YOU INTO A TRAP MY DEAR
lmao Ochako you rube
now you’ve done it Toga. there is nothing Ochako loves more than a good old fashioned Old People Romance. DID YOU KNOW SHE HAS SEEN THE NOTEBOOK LIKE FIFTY TIMES. AND NO MATTER WHAT, IT ALWAYS GETS HER AT THE END. meanwhile I just want to watch a movie where James Marsden actually gets the girl for once but we all know that will never happen
OH MY
ngl this page would be like a thousand times better if Ochako was still blushing omg. did I ship this before?? I honestly can’t remember but I sure as fuck ship it now goddammit
(ETA: pretty sure I shipped it back during the Forest arc too but I don’t have time to check right now lol. but Toga is just so horny on main for everyone, all the time, and so like, it’s hard not to ship it.)
so now Toga is running off all flirtatiously and Ochako is barreling after her lol
plot twist, Takeo-san is actually in there. and he has NO IDEA what’s going on. WHAT HAPPENED TO MY WIFE. WHY IS THERE A GIANT MOLE MAN BURROWING THROUGH THE CITY
Ochako why on earth would you follow Toga into this dark creepy house where she could spring at you from any angle out of nowhere. just go back outside and float up over it until you have a high enough vantage point to see all the exits and just wait for her to come out
Toga says she wanted to talk to Tsuyu-chan as well, but let’s be real, you and her don’t have the same kind of electrically charged kismesis energy that you’ve got going on with Ochako though
LMAO DEKU NOWHERE IS SAFE
getting dragged like a fucking wedding train and he’s not even there to defend himself, shit
blah blah blah just ask her your question already Toga
MY WORD
would someone please inform Toga that this manga is only rated PG-13
so now Ochako is all “seriously Toga wtf”
you see that’s what I wanted to know too, lol. I really like that the characters actually think about these things and ask these kind of questions. that’s exactly the contrast between the heroes and the villains right there. the villains care about each other, they’ll give each other heartwarming speeches to please come back alive, and yet they’re utterly indifferent to the thousands of people being killed as they demolish their way through city after city. meanwhile by contrast Ochako’s first thought upon being erotically waylaid by her sexy knife-wielding archnemesis is “but what about that poor old lady is she all right.” just completely opposite energies, almost to a hilarious degree. like maybe Ochako actually should worry about herself just a little bit more lol but heroes gonna hero
and so now what, Toga!! you’re gonna pout about it?? like she’s betrayed you somehow?
anyway so that’s the end of the chapter! and I’ll just come right out and say that I’m hoping that this fight ends up being something where Toga maybe starts to see things just a little bit more from Ochako’s point of view, and not the other way around, because otherwise I’ll be a little frustrated, ngl. the manga has done an excellent job of making the villains likeable and relatable and getting us to sympathize with them up till this point, but at some point it’s got to start refuting some of these arguments and making it clear that the villains do not actually have any kind of moral high ground here
and also! I really like Toga and would like her to have some kind of redemption arc! but as of now that’s looking to be really difficult if not impossible to pull off, because Toga hasn’t exactly shown a whole lot of remorse for anything she’s done so far, you know? because she doesn’t see it as bad in any way; to her it’s just her way of expressing love, and being true to who she is. but being true to yourself really should NOT involve, you know, MURDER, and so yeah. it’s a problem lmao
but who knows! maybe this battle with Ochako will be the start of something which eventually leads to some sort of change within her! I have absolutely no idea how that could play out tbh, but even so I can hope! either that or she will double down on the whole “villains are victims and heroes are apathetic cruel hypocrites” ideology and decide she wants to kill Ochako and Izuku for breaking her heart, in which case I will be very sad, but I guess if that’s the way Horikoshi’s gonna play it it is what it is!
and lastly, so is this going to be like the final battle between them or something?? surely not, right? like this is just round 2 of 3. well at any rate, it’s sure going to be interesting
