BNHA Observations, speculations and assorted info: Hospitals (Part 1: Fujitani Hospital)
So, in order to write my fic, I spend much time observing canon scenes, comparing the manga and the anime version, take note of details, translations and info in them as well as finding out how are some things called.
Since what I noticed/speculated/found out can be of use for other fic authors I thought to share as well.
Resources:
Chap. 44 "Relaxing Day Off" (休め振替休日 Yasume Furikae Kyūjitsu) Chap.
Ep. 25 "Todoroki vs. Bakugo" (轟VS爆豪 Todoroki vs. Bakugō) Ep. 38 "Encounter" (エンカウンター) Ep. 88 "His Start" (始まりの Hajimarino) Ep. 105 "The Hellish Todoroki Family" (地獄の轟くん家 Jigoku no Todoroki-kun-chi) Ep. 124 "Dabi's Dance" (ダビダンス Dabi Dance)
School Briefs I "Notice from School"
OBSERVATIONS, SPECULATIONS AND ASSORTED INFO:
The place in which Todoroki Rei is hospitalized is Fujitani Hospital (藤谷病院 ‘Fujitani Byōin’). Fujitani can be translated as "wisteria valley" and is apparently not a real place. There's a Fujitani clinic (藤谷医院 'Fujitani iin') in Osaka but it's clearly not the same place.
Japanese fans speculated the name comes from one of Horikoshi's assistants, Fujiya (藤谷), whose surname is written the same, though the spelling is different. Honestly I couldn't see any spelling notation for the hospital so it can be we're just spelling it wrong... or I missed the spelling notation.
The hospital is likely not close to the Todoroki home.
In chap 189 Fuyumi and Natsuo in order to return home after visiting their mother take a taxi.
Episode 25 instead shows Shouto had to walk quite a bit, then take a train then walk some more.
OUTSIDE
The best image of the outside of the hospital comes from chap 290 of the manga, in which Horikoshi clearly finalized the design, while we could fist read the hospital's name in chap 187
Tumblr media
ENTRANCE
We can only see there are sliding doors in both versions.
Tumblr media
RECEPTION
No big changes here the image on the manga is more accurate and shows the nurses also have pc. The ceiling is kind of different.
Tumblr media
CORRIDOR
The corridor is mostly the same, the anime only adds a support so people who've to walk through it can support themselves with them.
Tumblr media
REI'S ROOM ENTRANCE
The differences between manga and anime are minimal, the window on the door in the manga seems smaller and the sign with Rei's name is different though the number of the room is the same, 315.
Tumblr media
REI'S ROOM INSIDE VIEWS
Episode 25 adds some details to Rei's room but changes the type of window... though they'll change it into one that matches the manga in episode 88 (same goes for the desk which also gets changed in one matching the one in the manga). The anime also turns the door into a sliding one. Accessories (a lamp and other controllers) are added on the wall next to Rei's bed only to be removed later on.
I do wonder if the slight wisteria tinge in episode 25 is due to the hospital name... later though it will be removed the head of the bed turned first grey and then brown.
They also first will add a furniture on top of which there's a tv next to Rei's bed, to remove it and replace it with a wardrobe and in an episode we'll see a chair that'll disappear in the following ones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Long story short, there's no consistency whatsoever in how the anime depicts Rei's room, which becomes particularly evident in Episode 105 in which they change the disposition of the furniture, moving the desk in front of the window and the bed on the other side of the room, changing even the kind of window Rei had (but everything will be back to their places in episode 124)

CEILING
Tumblr media
We get some other additional info from "School Briefs".
Fujitani Hospital is described as “…a large white building lit up in shades of orange by the setting sun. The hospital where his mother was institutionalized. Though clinic hours were just about over, the lobby was brimming with patients waiting to check out. Todoroki glanced at the scene as he hurried into an elevator destined for the upper levels. It wasn’t his first time coming here, but the boy noticed how nervous he was as he stared at the floor display, tickling up.”
“The elevator doors slid open quietly, and Todoroki emerged into a corridor bathed in silence, unlike the lobby below. The faint scent of antiseptic common to most hospitals reminded him of his own recent stay…”
“As he passed the nurses’ station, a nurse he’d become acquainted with called out to Todoroki.”
“He had half a mind to ask a question, but the station phone started ringing, so he kept walking.”
We move to Rei's room, for which we only get the story to mention tiny bits of furniture and the fact there's actually a minifridge in the room under the desk.
“With the barred window at her back, a soft smile crept into her eyes, which opened wide.”
““Oh… Nothing, honey. Come on in. Sit,” replied his mother, offering Todoroki her own chair.”
“Todoroki checked the minifridge under the desk and found a few bottles of soft drinks, as well as a yogurt drink with a cartoon cow on the carton, clearly meant for children.”
“As if she’d done it a million times before, Fuyumi stuffed the bundle of clothing onto a shelf.”
And that's all I could find on the place.

I know it was a brief moment, but remember when Hawks showed that he disagreed with Stain’s ideology? (as everyone should btw)
Tumblr media
With the information on Hawk's character that we have now it makes even more sense.
Because Stain’s ideology goes against everything Hawk’s stands for.
Which is the human ability to change and grow at any point in your life.
As many have already pointed out (including the series) Stain’s ideology is incredibly flawed on a fundamental level. Because it requires the idea and only idea, that people never change or are uncapable of change and remain stagnate.
Which is inherently untrue. Even on a small scale.
Think about who you were when you were 10, 13, 20. What you use to believe in, what you believe now, how you use to act, how you act now, what type of friends you keep.
It’s all part of growing because that’s just how humans work. Whether for bad or good depends on the situation.
On a hero scale we see this first with Mt Lady
Mt Lady started off as someone who only became a hero too seek fame. But as the series progresses we see her go through events that make her realize what it really means to be a hero and make her willing to put her own life on the line for others.
Tumblr media
With Stain’s beliefs she should have died before she could even come to this point.
That’s how power change can be for some people.
To the point where some people are vastly different from who they use to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because it’s easier to think someone is one thing, rather then accept that if they are willing, they can change for the better.

Me: You know, I really love that Deku is trying to be a slightly more peaceful protagonist. Yes, he fights, but it’s driven by his main desire to save people. It’s not something you see very often, and I love that Deku's end goal is to actually save the villain instead of just beating him up
Also me, when Deku inevitably faces AFO:

Hori killed Nagant because he couldn't possibly handle the popularity of a strong and interesting female character.

ahh yes, the two fates of women in bnha: brutally murdered for a man’s development, or stripped of all her expertise and sidelined so the focus can shift back to a man’s development

Note
Someone said that all of this is not just to abduct Izuku but to weaken his will by "failing" to save the people he manages to convince with his words.
I think that someone is right.
I think that AFO had predicted that whatever happened, he would win. If Nagant won and brought Izuku back? Perfect. If she lost and/or betrayed him? She would pay the ultimate price and there was nothing Izuku could do to save her.
And the latter is so insidious because it means that even if Izuku doesn't kill the villains sent after him, if they made a deal with AFO, they are condemned. If they refuse to fight, they're dead.
It's like AFO is literally telling Izuku that they are people beyond saving. And since those people are villains, it really feels like he is trying to say that once someone made a choice, they can't go back.
Which doesn't bode well for Shigaraki.

Well since the "Horikoshi is a misogynist" takes are back let's take a tour of how multiple female characters have played major roles in the series. As well as understanding the importance of reading a story told from a culture different than yours.
- I would like to mention that before MHA Horikoshi's first manga series was Oumagadoki Zoo with a female protagonist - Aoi Hana. She even made a small appearance in the anime. The series was sadly cancelled but was able to finish. Keep in mind this is Horikoshi's first manga, so he's had time to improve when MHA was released.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Miruko prevented Shigaraki from reaching 100% by fighting off the High-Ends - alone - and locating where he and Doctor Garaki were. Which means she's a big reason why he couldn't steal OFA. She helped in arresting Doctor Garaki who is the one capable of getting Shigaraki to 100%. So she also played a role as to why AFO went underground because he cannot get Shigaraki to 100% to steal OFA without Garaki.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Momo's drug is what eventually took Machia down. Which means her plan prevented the heroes fighting him at the end from getting killed and even more cities from being destroyed.
Tumblr media
- Aside from Momo, Mt. Lady was one of the few heroes that could really put up a fight with Machia as many were killed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Toga is infatuated with Midoriya and Ochakou. Yet she is getting the answers she needs about heroes from Ochakou - not Midoriya. While we have yet to see it, it is confirmed Ochakou will have a major role as a "light of hope" later on in the series.
Tumblr media
- Even if Lady Nagant is killed off we would've never known the HPSC used heroes as assassins without her. She played a big role in showing more of the HPSC's corruption.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Male characters outshine female characters in many Shounen series. My Hero Academia is nothing special in that aspect.
- Do the female characters get sexualized? Yes, not because Horikoshi is a misogynist himself but because of Japanese culture. Female characters have been sexualized in anime/manga for a long time.
- Japan has a huge sexism problem. Japan holds deep value to its traditions and harmony. So people avoid getting into arguments. But that comes at a cost of problems not being solved with lack of communication to major issues. Luckily the problem does seem to be addressed more - by Japanese natives - but Japan has a long way to go.
Edit: I found another article about Japan's struggles with sexism/gender inequality. But this one includes the #KuToo movement.
- Do not blame Horikoshi for societal failures.
- It is not his fault he was born and raised in a society where it is normalized for men to have more dominant roles than women.

Seems like Hawks shot out small feathers in a desperate attempt at keeping Lady Nagant from falling. It’s clear now that the bond they shared is strong. This really makes you think how much Hawks still holds on to people who meant a lot to him even after all their wrongdoings. She literally turned on the hero society and murdered the president of the Comission (that he’s so faithful to), yet he still tried to reach out and help her.
