no. hawks shouldn’t have done what he did, in every perspective it was wrong period.
[ bnha manga spoilers ]
did you read the part where he sustained multiple horrible injuries to try and drag out the fight as long as possible because he still believed twice could be saved… or did you read the part where he tried to reason with twice multiple times…. or the part where letting twice escape with the league would put thousands of lives at risk… or the part where dabi came and encouraged twice to go crazy at hawks and hawks STILL didn’t want to kill him….
#more than a year later and we still gotta have this debate!#very genuinely if you don’t understand that hawks did what he had to do to save lives#then you just aren’t comprehending the situation#hawks#hawks bnha#bnha

the thing that i notice about hawks and that people hate about him is that he has this tinted glass view of how heroes are even with the evidence right in front of him he can’t be bothered to break from that hold that the HPSC had/still has over him.
an example of this is enji. endeavor being exposed as a husband/child abuser? well it’s okay now because he feels bad and apologized so he’s still a hero. it’s ok because endeavor made him feel good/safe when he needed. gave him the ‘support’ he needed when he had no support. yet that same support and feelings of happiness/safety were not rewarded to endeavors own family but that’s alright because he was ‘there’ for hawks.
he’s been manipulated, groomed, and gaslit to believe that heroes will always be the good guys even when they engage in villainess behavior. it’s sad to see but these are the panels that pissed me off right here:
…. what the fuck does that mean hawks? explain that shit to me what do you mean how could she let herself be manipulated? what do you mean that she should have realized? that she gave up?
it’s panels like these that make me realize why people hate hawks. because he’s been conditioned by the very same people who ruined both their lives, realizes they are shit/wrong, and just think it’s so easy to just grin and bear it because he did
this is also why people call horikoshi misogynistic because he acts like hawks is ‘oh so strong’ for sticking to his morals (😑) but that in the end nagant wasn’t because she allowed herself to be used and manipulated by AFO as is hawks isn’t still under the thumb of the hero society that he’s trying to do hard to change even though it needs to be reformed
both are victims and yet one of them are being treated like they’re dumb and naive while the other is being held up as the true hero

I want to talk about this panel on its own. This panel is told from Lady Nagant's POV. She's assuming that Hawks has done the same things she has. Which means she thinks he obediently followed orders the same way she did. We know this is not true as he defied orders and dug up information behind the HPSC's back.
We also see in Hawks' time at the HPSC that they trained him as a spy.
But considering he's Nagant's replacement, they most likely wanted to push him towards the same path as her. Which was hinted at when they told him to turn a blind eye at civilian casualties - and he defied that order.
Hawks also hesitated in the fight against Twice. If he had already been killing people the same way Nagant had, there would've never been a fight as he would've killed Twice immediately.
To compare here's Lady Nagant as she is carrying out her orders by the HPSC to kill.
And here is Hawks in the fight against Twice.
- He tells Twice directly he doesn't want to fight.
- He begs Twice to come quietly and offers redemption.
- He holds Twice down with a feather blade pointed but doesn't kill him with it - Twice's clone raises towards his blade.
- Even when Hawks is seriously injured, his first thought is to carry him out since he weakened him.
Nagant is making assumptions about Hawks based on her own personal experiences. She thinks because he's her replacement they are the same. When in reality they are entirely different.

How Hawks Keeps His “Glimmer of Hope”
This week, Lady Nagant posed Hawks an interesting question. As I pointed out before, the difference between Hawks and Lady Nagant is that Hawks still manages to cling onto his hope that a better society can be brought about - but, how does he do that?
To be honest, I was slightly disappointed in Hawks’ answer when I first read the leaks - not because it was out of character or anything (him attributing it to 🧸is exactly what I would expect of Mr. My-Back-Isn’t-Broad-Enough, who can’t see how incredible he actually is), but because it doesn’t do much to really answer Nagant’s question, or at the very least, show her a way so that she can regain her glimmer in her eye.
(Note: I do like the official translations of this scene)
So… what was Hori’s message here? Rather than showing how Hawks refused to let civilians die when he 100% had permission to so if it meant he might get in with the League, or how when he had orders to kill Jeanist, he decided to enact an absolutely crazy risky scheme to keep him alive, or how when he confronted Twice, he tried to give him an alternate way out and only killed him as a last resort (a trained, brainwashed assassin would have killed him when he first cornered him)…. Horikoshi flashes back once more to the Endeavor plush.
I think the answer to Lady Nagant’s question, of how to hold on to hope when all hope seems lost, goes back to this series’ theme of remembering your origins.
#couldn’t have said it better myself#thinking about how hawks doesn’t realize how incredible he actually is#he attributes his hope to the plushie and while that has truth to it he was the one that assigned the plushie meaning#he has been strong from the very beginning#and he was able to hold onto that strength and hope bc he had the plushie#does that make sense#hawks#hawks bnha#bnha manga spoilers

Hawks’ Genuine smiles
These are some of the most genuine smiles we’ve seen from Hawks. His smile as Keigo is subtle and soft, head downward and mouth closed, eyes half-lidded, clutching his plushie Endeavour.
While the one as Hawks is so natural. His grins is awkward a bit, slightly crooked, showing a bit of gum, and Hawks is a master at picture perfect smiles/grins. So him showing such a crooked smile just showcases how emotional he’s feeling at the moment. His eye is even creased in emotion.
