Agahdhshaha there's this one thing that anti yesterday said and it was "imagine if people you know irl knew you shipped thor and loki!! an incest ship!!" as though it was the most damning thing, sure to discredit you forever.. Like, bud. All my close friends know I'm into fandoms and by extension they know I ship it. My roommates know I ship it, because one randomly mentioned something on the topic to me and I was loling about it and pointing out the thorki fanart I have framed on my bookshelf. My ex boyfriend knew, he helped me with fics sometimes. Some random college friends of mine knew because they saw my blog (reaction to my explicit thorki smut? "how do u know english well enough to write fiction??"). Acquaintances irl who are into fandoms, different ones but still, talk about it generally and don't bat an eye when you mention what you're into. And so on and on.

I think in general we all want to keep a level of separation between online fictional interests and our real lives, and i do, what i mentioned above is something that happened organically over the years and i don’t go around spilling stuff to people but that attitude struck me - that opinion that everyone would be as hateful and violent as they are. the attempt to shame and silence people for shipping what they don’t like by pulling out this card like “you are keeping this a secret because it’s vile and disgusting!!!”

i gotta wonder.. what would your irl friends, assuming you have any that is, think of your online activities? working yourself into a frothing rage and wishing people to die over fictional stuff?

because in my personal experience, non-fannish people also consume media and they can understand thinking something in that media is hot and putting time and effort into appreciating it. they might not be so understanding towards letting your entirely personality be defined by rage and hate because someone finds the ‘wrong’ fictional thing hot..

So my cousin shared a trailer on Facebook for the live-action/realistic Lion King that’s in the works, and I was like, “Dude, I didn’t think they’d have anything for this out yet!”  I’m on the fence about how I feel about the movie, but I decided to watch the video anyways.

So it starts, and I see this majestic lion, and I think, “Huh, this animation style looks super familiar.  I feel like I already know that lion.”  But it takes me another ten seconds to not only recognize the lion, but the exact snippets of exact scenes that are shown.

Aslan.  It was Aslan.  Part of it, anyway.  There was the stone table and everything.  This trailer was nothing more than a fan-made anticipatory video.  I facepalmed.

So now the question is:  do I tell my cousin?
