with all these gaston crackships/rarepairs that are coming out lately it would be so fucking funny if he had a flig with all the main characters (ambar, nina, simon... hell luna too if you want) and they all know it except matteo
#mf would feel so betrayed once he finds out#and not because he's jealous or anything - or maybe yes (they kinda have a vibe between them if you get what i mean)#mainly because his best friend didn't tell him#gaston would 100% use “you didn't ask” with a shit-eating grin while shrugging his shoulder#he would have the time of his life making fun of matteo reaction lol#and matteo would also lowkey be insecure (understandable because gaston was probably a better boyfriend for all those people [real])#[from here on i'm gonna yap but like... YAP - get ready]#type of flings/situationships/whatever i think he had:#LUNA/GASTON : [barely a fling/ a kinda relationship (?)] - them just trying it out for the hell of it#they had a lot of fun and it strengthened their friendship#they never talk about it unless they're sure that they're by themselves#gaston sometimes reminiscences about it in front of others(to make luna panic/embarass)but in such a vague enough way that they don't get i#it always comes off as them play-fighting#it either happened before he and nina got together (which is what i'm running with for this post) or they did it after she left#because they were the closest to her and were the only people that could understand what it meant to lose nina#(luna also dated her in the past by this point)#GASTON/NINA: [literally canon and one of the main ships] so i don't have to explain it i guess#GASTON/SIMON: [was a “they were all in their feelings” during those moments - kind of deal]#that scene i reposted the other day is a good way to pinpoint when they started to actually eye eachothers /put a start to what they had#it ended two or three months later - don't know who put an end to it between them#but it wasn't a problem because they both had something else they wanted to focus on more - they're extremely chill about this#GASTON/AMBAR: [kinda the same - got to know eachother when they were kids and became extremely close (even tho it took A BIT since#even if gaston came from a good family ambar was still as standoffish as now (and also a bit shy even if she wouldn't admit it)]#gaston was the one that did the first step#at that point ambar actually never stopped to think about dating in general but especially him#but the idea of losing him as a friend for something so stupid as a relationship terrified her#he reassured her that whatever happened nothing between them would've changed#which was real but also not really#they ended up breaking up a year and a half later and became a bit awkward around eachothers for a bit (mostly because of ambar)#they're still cordial with eachothers

Vivian nods away in agreement for to her, having a considerable amount of burgers without any soda didn't seem like something that's really heard of... and yeah, perhaps there were way better palate cleansers to be had than carbonated drinks, but as this was a food truck and not a restaurant, the selection of beverages they could realistically order would understandably be a bit limited.
"Welp, I wouldn't go as far as to say I necessarily understand 'everything', per say, but yeah, once you manage to live through twenty one years on this planet, you start discovering some pretty basic stuff... like, for instance, how the human body gets thirsty if you consume salty snacks yet do not occasionally bring yourself to drink water throughout regular intervals," Vivian states. Granted, most would consider that to be 'common sense', but as per usual, she frames it more like an academic study than redundant knowledge nobody would truly bother disputing.
Either way, it doesn't take long for her bespectacled gaze to soon settle on the drinks menu, which was situated to the right side corner of the food truck... and to her delight, Coke was listed as one of the drinks that were available to order, causing her to clasp both hands together.
Tumblr media
"Ooh, what do you know?! They do indeed have Coke! No Fanta to be seen, though... then again, at least we aren't forced to choose Pepsi, which is the mid alternative to Coke," Vivian pipes up. Of course, after the final customer leaves, she'll then finally pull out her wallet before turning to Mizumachi. "Alright, so to summarize super quickly... we want ten teriyaki cheese burgers with two cokes?" Vivian repeats in order to ensure they were on the same page.

“Bia is so smart! I love it!”
Who knew there was such a place so close by? He hadn’t found the place yet, and who knew how long it would’ve taken before he found it. The food truck  now had a new fan who was bound to visit pretty often any time homesickness struck him- which was surprisingly often if he was left alone with his thoughts.
The jock laughs at the comment that the food truck wasn’t going anywhere. It wouldn’t sprout legs and run away—but it had wheels, didn’t it? Couldn’t it drive off?
“Yeah! A Teriyaki cheese burger sounds great!”
Sometimes, he’d go into restaurants and find that the food was very different compared to his expectations, but if going by the smell alone, he was sure that he was going to like the burgers here. He normally wasn’t that picky when it came to food anyways, but still! It was a kind of betrayal for someone who craved familiar tastes to walk into a restaurant and walk out of it confused over what he’d actually eaten. He learned the hard way that many ‘fusion’ places weren’t… the best. Guess not every fusion was stellar and epic. Sorry Goku and Vegeta.
“You really understand everything, huh? You’re right! If you’re going to be eating a lot of burgers anyways, ya gotta drink something that pairs well with it. Coke is the best! Fanta is also good, though.”
If you were going to be eating your fill of burgers, was there really any real difference if you chose to drink soda over water? The difference was minor at that point, so there was no point in picking straws. Water was his preferred drink for regular hours, but if he was doing rigorous exercise, then he would reach for sports drinks to replenish his electrolytes. Soda was for whenever he was treating himself to some junk food. Might as well go big or go home (and eat healthier).

≡;- ꒰ °When they get jealous ꒱
Tumblr media
➤ tw: slight suggestive themes
a/n: I've been really rusty with writing recently. Like really rusty, but I hope this is okay !! >:3
Tumblr media
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ Roronoa Zoro
Zoro’s brow twitched in annoyance as he heard your laughs across the deck. And not to him, but to the damn cook who swooned over your presence.
Sanji continued to pepper your arms with kisses, giving you drinks and snacks whenever you wanted it. It was like he was crazier over you than anybody else on the ship. His partner.
Zoro was too caught up in his thoughts, as he absent mindedly lifted his weights.
“Zo?” You called. “Hey! Zo!” Your hands waved across his face causing him to jolt a little.
“Y/n, hey.” Was all he said as he continued to lift his weights.
You frowned. “Are you okay? You seem…off.”
“I’m fine.” He grunted, dropping his weights. He brushed past you and positioned himself for pushups.
You immediately knelt beside him with your lips pursed. You had a vague idea why he was acting this way and it was always for the same reason. “Y’know Sanji is just being nice.”
“Yeah.” Zoro deadpans. “Is kissing your arms nice?”
“N-no not necessarily…”
Zoro directed his eyes to the ground and started his routine. “We’re done here.”
Not wanting to end the conversation, you persisted. “It’s just his nature Zo, y’know that. There’s no need to be jealous-”
“Jealous? Is that what you think this is?” He huffed.
You bit the inside of your lips. “This is exactly what this is. I’m not blind.”
Zoro halted his movements and moved to position himself in front of you. “Do you ever think to ask why I feel that way?”
“Can I ask now?” You leaned to meet his gaze.
Zoro grumbled to himself. His hand rubbed against his neck. He didn’t know what he felt at that moment. Jealousy over Sanji, or the fluttery feeling in his stomach as you gave him that stupid look with your stupid cute eyes. “S’just I can’t provide the romance Sanji does. Sometimes I think you want that…and I can’t give it.”
A small smile reached your lips at Zoro’s vulnerability. “No, I think you’re perfect.”
The tips of Zoro’s ears reddened. “Yeah right.”
“No I’m being serious,” You scooted closer to him, hands tilting his head. “You’re my handsome boy.”
Zoro’s face flushed as he looked away, your gaze too strong. “Alright that’s enough!” He gently shoves you causing you to laugh.
“What, I thought you liked that nickname?”
Zoro huffed. “I never said that.”
You hummed. “Are youuuu feeling any better?”
Zoro scratched the back of his head in thought and turned to you, a smirk across his face. “I will once you meet me in the bird’s nest tonight.”
Shaking your head you threw out a pinky “That’s a promise then, you dog.”
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ Crocodile
Miss All Sunday was a beautiful woman. Crocodile knew that, but he didn’t like the way she had you all over her. You were soooo curious about the books she has read, why didn’t you ask him about books. He read too.
About five more minutes, Crocodile had enough. He made his way over and hooked you toward him. “Miss All Sunday, I think you’ve had something of mine a little too long. I require my partner’s presence now.”
Robin smiled, she knew her actions had irked the man. “My apologies, I wasn’t aware you could get so jealous of us bonding over books?”
Crocodile tsked and left without a second to spare, dragging you along with his hook.
“You were jealous?” You asked, a hint of amusement to your voice.
“Hardly, I merely wanted you is all.”
“Yeahh.” You dropped the subject and allowed your lover to drag you through the long corridor till you both stopped at a pair of dark oak doors.
His hook ushered you in and you gasped at the sight. It was a large old looking library. “Since when was this here?” You awed.
“Since forever. I just never bothered with it. But you, my love, seem to have an interest in books.”
You smirked. “So you were jealous. It’s okay, I don’t mind.”
Crocodile rolled his eyes. “My love, if it’s books you want, I have way more than what that woman can give.”
“And I appreciate the show of love.” Your hands dragged across the dusty books. “This actually means a lot, thank you.”
You felt Crocodile’s hook hug your body as he dragged you toward him once again, his other hand making itself comfortable on your waist. “I can provide you way more than just books.” His tone lowered causing you to suck in your breath.
“I know that.”
“Then why don’t I show you how much more I can provide you…perhaps in the master bedroom, my love?”
You placed a hand on his chest, the scent of his cigar blinding your senses. “I would love that actually.”
“Then allow me.” He lifted you into his arms, making his way down the hall. You laughed excitedly and as you passed another hallway, your eyes met with Robin’s and all she gave was a wink before she left you two to your fun.
You had to thank her later.
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ Trafalgar Law
He felt absolutely nothing whenever it was his crew hanging around you, but when his crew met up with the Strawhats and Kid pirates. He didn’t know what to feel when you got involved in a conversation between Zoro and the massacre soldier. Two relatively attractive men.
Did he feel a little insecure, yes. But he wouldn’t admit that. Never in his life would he.
It wasn’t till you two were alone in the tang, getting ready for bed did Law decide to speak up.
“So, you seem very fond of the other crews.”
“Oh,” You perked up at your boyfriend’s voice. “Yeah, they seem really cool.”
Law nodded at your statement. “I could see how some could be cool. Is there any that peak your interest?”
You pondered for a bit. “Um yeah, why the sudden questions Law?”
Law shrugged. “Just curious s’all.”
Shrugging you purse your lips in thought. “Well, I find the swordsman and massacre soldier really cool. Especially since they fought recently.”
“Yeah I saw you three talking.” Law says.
“Yep, I was asking them about fighting tips, y’know useful things for further battles.”
Law hummed. “I see.”
You tilted your head, eyes analyzing your lover. “Were you by any chance…jealous?”
“Never.” Law was quick as he sat himself on his side of the bed. “Don’t be ridiculous.”
You laughed.
“Why are you laughing, there’s nothing funny.” Law said defensively.
“Oh I knowww it’s just, you can be so cute sometimes.”
Law gave a look of embarrassment, eyes flickering between you and the wall. “C-cute??” I’m not cute.”
“Okay okay,” You scooted beside him. “You’re handsome.”
Law smiled, leaning into your touch. “As you are, Y/n-ya.” He moved in for a kiss, a kiss you happily accepted. Your hands entangled in his as he moved over your body, arms on either side of your head.
Law pulled away from the kiss with a smirk. “You do a lot of things to me Y/n-ya.”
“Like what?”
“Make me realize I’m the luckiest man alive. I never thought I’d be able to find love till I found you.”
You pulled Law in for a chaste kiss. “If making you jealous makes you this romantic, I would’ve done it sooner.”
“Don’t dream of it.” Law pinches your cheek and settles beside you. “If I were actually jealous I’d do a lot more than just be romantic, you know that.”
“Ohhh I know.”

excerpt from in-progress "timebending with Zuko" fic
Zuko wakes up and everything hurts.
Most specifically, his scar hurts.
That . . . doesn’t make sense, he thinks, and reaches for it automatically. A strong hand catches his wrist before he can touch it, which seems–fair, yes. Probably a good idea, anyway, because spirits does it hurt. Just . . . so much.
“Uncle?” he asks reflexively, attempting to open his eyes. It’s surprisingly difficult. And Uncle is in Ba Sing Se, of course, but he’s on his back on a futon or bedroll or something similar and someone’s sitting beside him and his head is swimming and he’s injured, clearly, so options for who said “someone” might be are limited, really.
So it’s not Uncle, obviously, but . . .
“Nephew,” Uncle says, very quietly, and Zuko . . . blinks.
At least, half-blinks. The one eye’s in too much pain to open.
The ceiling is metal, he notes absentmindedly. That’s . . . odd. He was in the palace, wasn't he?
“What happened?” he asks, vaguely bemused. Uncle pauses in a very concerning way, and Zuko has about three heart attacks about just how badly he doesn’t want to know what he’s about to say before–
“The Agni Kai,” Uncle says, very carefully. “Do you remember it?”
Zuko frowns–just with the one side of his face, because again, his scar hurts right now. To the point that his whole body feels wrong, does his scar hurt right now.
“Um–which one?” he asks, because there’s been about a dozen this month alone, and frankly he’s getting really sick of fighting them at this point but if the old guard of nobles are just going to keep dragging everything out like this–
“With your father, Nephew,” Uncle says, very carefully.
Zuko . . . blinks.
“Oh,” he says, vaguely perplexed. Uncle never talks to him about that. “Yeah, I remember that. What about it?”
“Do you remember what happened?” Uncle says.
“The part where I disgraced myself or the part where he burned my face?” Zuko says, because it’s so fucked up and awful and horrible that he can’t even get upset about it anymore, except when he’s really upset about it. But if Uncle’s bringing it up, presumably he has a good reason to be, so . . . “Or the whole ‘go find the Avatar who no one even believes exists anymore or you can never come home again’ part?”
“. . . all of that, yes,” Uncle says, still sounding very careful. Zuko frowns a little–again with just the one side of his face–and then looks over at him. His body still feels weird and wrong, but . . .
But . . .
They’re on a ship, he realizes. A Fire Nation one.
Well, explains the metal ceiling.
It doesn’t explain why Uncle is wearing red armor and a topknot like he hasn't in years, though, or why he looks so unspeakably sad.
“Um,” Zuko says, and attempts to sit up. His head immediately starts swimming even worse, and Uncle catches his shoulders and keeps him pinned against the . . . futon? Looks like a futon, yeah. “Where are we, exactly?”
“We are aboard a ship,” Uncle says. “I . . . may have slightly commandeered it.”
“. . . you paid for it, right?” Zuko asks, a little skeptical at that idea.
“Yes, Nephew, I did,” Uncle says, giving him a very tired, pained smile. Zuko doesn’t feel much better, seeing it.
“Is someone dead?” he asks, because he can’t think of anything else that would make Uncle look that way.
“Ah–no, no one has died,” Uncle says.
“Then what’s wrong?” Zuko asks warily.
“. . . you are injured, Nephew,” Uncle says, slowly. Zuko frowns, bemused. “And your father . . . I did not know he was going to do this. I am so sorry.”
Zuko . . . pauses. Looks around the room again, and then realizes: he knows this room, doesn’t he. He knows this ship.
This is the same ship he woke up on after the Agni Kai.
“Hold that thought, Uncle,” he says, then lifts his hands and looks at them. They . . . well, they are his hands, obviously.
But they’re not his hands, obviously.
“Huh,” he says, frowning in bemusement at them; turning them around like he half-expects them to stop being a thirteen year-old’s or something equally ridiculous. They don’t. They are very definitely a thirteen year-old’s hands.
Specifically, his thirteen year-old hands.
Huh.
“You don’t have to be sorry,” he says after a moment, putting his hands back down and glancing back to Uncle, who’s obviously the more important concern. “It wasn’t your fault.”
“I took you into that meeting,” Uncle says, his voice tight. “And I watched the Agni Kai. And I did nothing to stop any of it.”
“I know,” Zuko says. “But it wasn’t your fault.”
“It was,” Uncle says, his smile a sad and terrible thing. “You were there because of my actions. My mistakes.”
“You’re not the one who wanted to sacrifice all those soldiers,” Zuko says. “Or the one who decided to throw fire at my face.”
“You were there because of me,” Uncle repeats, his voice tight and his smile no less terrible. It occurs to Zuko, briefly, that Uncle must be thinking of Lu Ten.
He only ever looks like that when he’s thinking about Lu Ten, so . . .
“Uncle,” he says. “Really. It’s not your fault.”
“Nephew,” Uncle says, and his voice is somehow even tighter. Zuko tries to get up again, and his head swims again, and Uncle moves to stop him again. This time he grabs onto Uncle’s wrists and uses them to pull himself up, and then . . .
Well, then he’s sitting up, at least.
So that’s something.
He tilts his head and his hair slips into his eyes. It’s loose, and long. Not shaved on the sides yet, like he wore it the last time he was thirteen. He supposes he should cut it, but then again, why should he? He's not changing anything, after all.
Except for this conversation, he supposes, because that went very differently last time.
. . . hm.
"Uncle," he says one more time, and reaches out for him. Uncle doesn’t seem to understand what he’s trying to do, so he has to reach out a little farther, and then Uncle makes the connection and leans in and lets him wrap his arms around him and alright, yes: that’s better, Zuko thinks, and clings to him.
Just a little, perhaps, but . . .
Yes. He clings to him.
Uncle wraps his arms around him in turn, very carefully, and makes an awful sound.
“My boy,” he chokes. “I’m so–I’m so–”
“I forgive you,” Zuko lies, because of course there’s nothing to forgive.
But of course Uncle doesn’t understand that, does he.

I am being brave and wandering into your ask box so you can ramble about the ghost au. It looks neat and I'm so curious owo
YAY YEAH YIPPEE!!!
Okay I'm just gonna try and synthesize all of the random notes I've written in the last few days into something of a vaguely coherent list lol
Grian and Joel are roommates looking for a new flat when they get the call that Grian has inherited a house, they very impulsively and foolishly decide to keep the thing that is way too large and far too run down for the two of them to handle, the house is so incredibly haunted, normal bbc ghosts plot ensues
Grian is the one who almost dies and ends up being able to see ghosts. Mumbo is the one who pushes him out the window. Which is ironic bc Mumbo was very much not pro killing the new inhabitants of the house when the other ghosts were scheming ways to get rid of them.
Okay so ghost facts.
Bdubs is obviously highly based on Robin the caveman, I imagine him being slightly closer to the end of the paleolithic period than Robin. I think he may or may not have had some weird cult stuff going in. Weird cult leader caveman guy worshiping the sun and moon. Yes the cloak is real moss. There's bugs in that thing
Wels and Hels killed eachother in a duel, right on the property line, which now neither of them can cross in death. So now both of them is just stuck on either side of the fence seething about it for the rest of time. I like how ridiculous and arbitrary the ghost property line rules are in ghosts, so I find this incredibly funny. Hels is the guy Black Knight stories are based on
Ren wasn't actually a king, he was some type of noble who tried to declare himself king of a specific area, hence the beheading. Whooooooo let's go treason!!
Cleo was not doing actual witch craft at the time she was accused of it, she was however probably doing other illegal and vaguely fucked stuff. Mayhaps that's why she was accused, someone wanted her out of the way and that was an easy and surefire way to get rid of her
Keralis. My silly silly little guy. Our Kitty stand in. I just thought the idea of him dying from pufferfish poisoning was really funny considering him and XB's whole thing. I wanna have XB around, I can't decide if I want him to be a marine biologist of some kind who drowned on the next property over that keralis talks to over the fence, or if he's just like a grounds keeper who takes care of the lake next door that keralis is parasocially obsessed with lol
Beef. Beef my beloved. Period piece romance novel protagonist looking mf <3 He grew up in a family of butchers, became an impressionist painter instead of joining the family business. Focused a lot on pastoral scenes, especially stuff involving farm animals and especially cows. His family thought his career choice was kind of useless and frivolous, his artist colleagues thought his choice of painting subject was kind of frivolous. That's where he got the nickname 'Beef', now it's all anyone remembers him by, AND the fucking paints killed him 😔
Scar!!! The scammiest fucking traveling salesman on the planet. Death of a Salesman death of the American dream type vibes on that guy. He's gotta pay his medical bills somehow man, can't even really blame him for all the grifting. He probably should've been more careful with who he was scamming though, he maybe pissed off the wrong guy (do not scam mobsters! They will have someone kill you about it!)
Xisuma, given the greatest honor of being my Captian stand in. He was a sharp shooter, until his eye got fucked up and he lost his good aim. They shipped him off to the country side to work in 'intelligence', he takes his job very seriously despite this obviously just being somewhere they put him to not have to deal with him. Seriously enough in fact to discover a spy in their ranks! Just in time for that spy to kill him real bad. Damn.
Joe my absolutely beloved. Pat stand in but not quite. He was a popular radio host, he did a lot of volunteer work as a voice/performer for hire. He gets recruited to do some announcer work for a scouting event. There is, mayhaps, a much more. Uh. DIY. Scouting event happening on the next property over. There is an accident involving some homemade fireworks next door (cubfan. when I get you cubfan.), the fireworks going off scares some kid in the middle of fucking around with a bow, Joe gets shot, you can assume the rest. Cub is ghosting around next door cause of the fireworks accident if it makes you feel any better lol
Mumbo my stupid nervous guy. Ran a large tech startup in the late 90s, should not have been given that kind of power over a company. Accidentally did like. A lot of finance crime. Found out about said finance crime and immediately had a fucking heartattack and died from the panic. My cringe fail businessman I love you
Yeah yeah okay so neighbor ghosts. Cub, Hels, maybe XB, and Gem.
Etho is their weird annoying neighbor, he can also see ghosts, but it'll take awhile for everyone to figure that out.
In the same way Grian can see ghosts bc Mumbo tried to kill him, Etho can see ghosts bc Hels tried to kill him (haven't decided how exactly that went down yet)
I've been thinking about what to do with the basement ghosts and I think I want to put team zits down there.
Uh. Other human cast. Jimmy is around! He kind of fills an Obi type role, silly friend who is just kind of around a lot. I think I wanna have Lizzie as like a local barista Joel has a crush on. The ghosts get in his way every time he tries to make a move on her.
Obviously a lot of the ghosts aren't strict one to one fill ins for the original show's ghosts. Ren and Beef are both kind of drawing elements from both Thomas and Humphrey, Wels and X are both kind of drawing from Fanny and Cap, Scar and Mumbo both kind of combine to make up Julian's character. So on and so forth. All of the stuff with Etho and his property's ghosts is obviously all stuff I just did cause I thought it was fun lol
Oh yeah! Ghost powers! Okay obvious stuff, Bdubs has Robin's ability to fuck with lights, Cleo has the same burning smell as Mary, Mumbo can push stuff like Julian. Non obvious stuff. I want Joe to be able to be heard through like radios and phones and such. Hels has to have something to have almost killed Etho but I've yet to decide what that is. If Hels has something I think it would be funny to then have Wels also have the same power, but like. Weaker. So he can be pissy about it. Obviously.
Uh yeah that's all i can think of off the top of my head
Anyways, yeah!!! That's the basic constructions of this au. I had this idea like 3 days ago and have. Obviously thought about it a lot in that time lmao
You can't put two pieces of media in front of me and not expect me to go insane about it <3

Vash and Femininity: Trigun Stampede and its Themes of Bodily Autonomy, Exploitation, and Vague Gender Fuckery
alright sit the fuck down. we're gonna talk about THEMES
I was on Twitter- terrible idea usually, but a couple people I follow made some tweets that got me thinking about Trigun's overall themes, and here we are. So let's talk about some themes in Tristamp! And I'll take a couple looks at Trimax as well, just for fun :3
Let's look at how the showrunners utilize gender roles and exploitation of feminine characters to show how unhealthy Knives' obsession with his ideal of Vash is, and how horrific his exploitation of Vash and the Plants is.
Vash, from the beginning of Tristamp, is someone who cares about people's choices. When people kill others in front of him, he reiterates that whether someone lives or dies is not another person's choice to make. This is something he learned from Rem (a prominent female figure in his life). He refuses to kill people because that is not his choice to make. To kill someone is the ultimate removal of their bodily autonomy. They can no longer make any choices at all; they're dead.
Vash is also someone who has almost no choice in what path his life takes. He's constantly dragged around by outside forces, namely situations that are caused by Knives (which we'll get into later). Vash doesn't make things happen, things happen to Vash. The majority of events that occur are not his fault. He's pushed and pulled in a thousand different directions. His entire life is completely out of his control.
This can be seen as early on in his life as the Fall, something he had no control over and had no idea he even had a part in. Even later, in the ship with Luida and Brad, after he's been rescued from the desert, he's kept in handcuffs right up until he's shown to be of use to them and the Plant on their ship. After that, he could theoretically say "no, I don't want to go to other ships and heal their plants," but he doesn't. He's Vash. He's helpful and nurturing at his core, and these people have done so much for him just by letting him stay, so he'll do whatever they ask, no question.
This carries over into his adulthood. At Jeneora Rock, he goes to look at their Plant at one simple request, doesn't protest when he's dragged into a duel-- he doesn't take initiative unless someone's life is immediately at stake. He lets people tell him what to do and lets himself get dragged around by the wrist. He doesn't even pretend to have control over his life like Trimax Vash does, which I mean. Fair. Why pretend to have a grip on your existence when it's impossible to do anything without a gun pointed at your head?
Vash is a very passive character. He's nurturing, kind, gentle- he's a guy that fits a lot of very typical feminine character stereotypes. If you wrote this same story but made him a woman, I wouldn't bat an eye (but I would definitely be looking at it a lot more critically, what with the amount of stereotypically nurturing/motherly female characters in media already.)
This contrasts directly with Knives. He makes a decision and carries through no matter what stands in his way. He takes initiative. If Vash is a passive character, Knives is an active character. Wherever he goes, he leaves a lasting imprint. He makes shit happen! If outside forces make things happen to him, he'll go out of his way to make sure that particular force doesn't affect him again.
These two tweets I saw are what got me thinking about this originally. I just feel like here's a good place to put them as a segue into talking about episode 11.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 11 is where a lot of this feminine imagery really just. Explodes in your face. IT'S RIGHT THERE. You can't dance around it if you try. And it kind of reaches a peak when the connection reaches 100%, the gate opens, and. well. THIS happens to the Plants.
Tumblr media
Plants, in both Trimax and Tristamp, are almost always typically feminine-looking. Knives and Vash are the only two who are male or even masculine at all. Knives, as the most masculine out of all of them, is the one trying to take charge, and mould the world as he sees fit, to a degree that is detrimental to both him and everyone else. And Vash-- passive, feminine, kind and nurturing, whose Angel Arm in the manga always sprouts decidedly feminine-looking Plant parts-- is the one being exploited for Knives' plans. It's no mistake that they made the giant plant formation at the end of ep 11 look like a giant woman that almost resembles Rem.
Vash wants people to make their own choices and keep their autonomy when it comes to their bodies and lives. Knives is the exact opposite. He wants all Plants to become independent and he uses Vash to achieve that goal, without asking what Vash wants or even knowing what the Plants themselves would prefer. He exploits Vash for the soul purpose of trying to make these Plants have Independent Plant babies. He's completely incapable of seeing that his choices are not for the greater good! He thinks he's saving them, but none of his actions are for the good of anyone but himself. He’s just violating them for his own gain.
They're really leaning into gender roles for these guys, but in a way that screams "HEY, LOOK AT THIS! ISN'T IT FUCKED UP? LOOK AT HOW FUCKED UP THAT IS. LOOK AT THIS, AND BE UNCOMFORTABLE, AND KNOW THAT IT IS FUCKED UP."
Because it is! It's so extremely fucked up. They're using this imagery and these roles, something that makes most of us intrinsically uncomfortable, to drive home how unhealthy Knives relationship with his ideal of Vash is. That's the point. We're supposed to be uncomfortable with this.
Now of course there's some nuance to it. Like, you could see Knives as somewhat of a feminine and/or queer-coded figure as well, ESPECIALLY if you look at some of his panels in the manga, which could in turn lead to themes about infighting and control within marginalized communities, but that might be something for another post. :3
And there's definitely different ways you could take this! Vash, with all this feminine imagery, could be either transfem or transmasc coded, depending on what way you'd rather see it, which could lead into themes of how people outside the norm constantly face a lack of bodily autonomy and are exploited for purposes outside their boundaries. We could also look at Wolfwood and his lack of choice over joining the Eye of Michael and becoming the Punisher, and how masculine men (particularly men of colour) are often forced into violent roles against their will. If we look at Trimax, the exact same could be said for Livio/Razlo and people with disorders such as DID/OSDD.
There are many different ways you could spin these themes, some of which I don't feel personally qualified to discuss. If anyone who is qualified to talk about Wolfwood or Livio/Razlo or even other characters related to these themes, then god PLEASE add onto this post or make a post and tag me or something. I would love to read it!
Anyway, in conclusion: Vash is a feminine figure constantly taken advantage of and exploited and and he's so incredibly trans/nonbinary-coded that it drives me insane. Thank you

Hi im a new here i finally watched black sails after someone convinced me. And im changed. I'm. Yeah. I'm not who i was before. It's a bizarrely good show?
I'm so so so glad that so many ppl on ao3 agree with me that flint and silver need to fuck. Have fucked. Will fuck.
This will be all i think about for the next month or so.
If you have fic recs do let me know. I'm in dire need.
Hi my friend and welcome to hell! It's the best, right? ("Month" is a HIGHLY optimistic estimate about how long this will consume your brain...)
So honored that you asked for recs! I don't think I've ever compiled a general list of favorites, I had a great time and I think I'm happy with the results. This is by no means comprehensive, and obviously HIGHLY reflective of my own tastes, which are... uh.. I am known to not enjoy nice things very much. I invite others to reblog with their own favorites. Here we go...
Notes: These are in vaguely chronological order. I'm including word count and brief descriptions so you know what you're getting into but no warnings or anything, that's all on AO3. They are all silverflint and all explicit (I think, there might be one or two 'mature' in there but, this is the they need to, have, and will fuck list.) I didn't include any of my own work because presumably that's how you found my blog so you're aware, but I do have a pinned list, and if you want recs for mine or to talk about any of these just message, I will talk about silverflint all day.
Overall Recommendations:
The Most Unexpected Things by forbiddenarchives (~20k words) I think this one is a great starting point. It is very.. fic flavored fic, if that makes sense, in a great way. Hits the spot. The author's description is "season 2 if everyone were 5000% hornier" and that is accurate. Note this is marked as unfinished, but the place it wraps up feels totally reasonable to me.
As Good as Gone by spinninginfinityboy (~5.5k words) Complicated hot weird semi-hate sex on the way to Charles Town. A thing with a Spanish Dubloon that is emblazoned on my brain forever.
Combat by equestrianstatue (~10k words) A two part series, which I think captures the push-pull early frenemies vibe of s1-2 perfectly. Also the writing itself is stellar.
All alone in a moonlit shanty by PrimalScream (4.3k) Celebrating a good day hunting, Flint gets very drunk and tells the crew a dirty story. Silver tries to put him to bed, but he has different ideas. By far one of the lighter things on this list.
after the winnowing by princesskay (~14k) Set after Silver loses his leg, early in his recovery. Silk pajamas, multiple orgasms and overstimulation as well as their usual codependent fuckery.
What It Feels Like Not to Hurt by Robotboy (~9k) Another recovery fic. As the author says, it's 9k of slowburn watersports but really it's about Silver's pain and autonomy and humiliation and. Just. Even if it's not your usual cup of tea it's hot, give it a try.
vigia by doomcountry (~3k) A short, perfect rendering of their dynamic during early s3 raid times. Heartwrenching character study, excellent porn.
The Sack of James Flint by princesskay (~107k) So, yes, this is a novel length sub!Flint cock and ball torture series. I would make the argument that it is one of the best character studies in the fandom, for real. Absolutely worth your time, but fuck, it hurts your heart as much as your captain's balls in the end.
Concurrence by ember_firedrake (~2.5k) Mid s3. The first time they call each other by their first names. Now, that's not actually a thing I think they do, but, good porn and lower angst.
appreciation by nysscientia (~8k) Flint cultivates a certain aloof persona, but Silver sees right through it, and eventually they kiss about it.
Don't Fear The Ships (Fear The Black) by Farasha (~10k) - Silverflint use learning to sail as a coded way to flirt and talk about feelings (and eventually they kiss about it).
A Ship Is A Republic by Robotboy (~20k) A slow burn fic set during the inter-season sword training times. Love this dynamic, this author does power bottom Flint and sub Silver so fucking well.
deliverance is ours by the light of the stars by piratecaptainraven (3.1k) Flint sees Silver and Madi together, and doesn't stop watching when he should. They don't technically fuck in this, but its SO much pining, and the writing is poetic and gorgeous.
frail and fragile bars by ajaxthegreat (~21k) Possibly the hottest thing I've ever read, this rewrote my brain chemistry. Slow burn-ish. It captures that late season love and dependence and resentment and power struggle.
Cold, Dark, Depraved by notfelix (~10k) When fucking fixes absolutely nothing. This hurts in a way that feels, to me, similar to canon. I hate it (affectionate).
Opportunist by anonymous (~6.1k) This was part of the kinkmeme event (see below) and it fucking changed me. If I recommend one fic and only one fic to process the ending, it's this. It's awful. It's necrophilia and light cannibalism. It's the only thing I can imagine happening after, if Silver actually shoots Flint on that island. It makes me feel bad in the best way.
hand in unlovable hand by brinnanza, Jaynovz (~9.9k) Affectionately known as the worst ending AU, this is actually a great followup to the last one. How Silver copes, after Skeleton Island.
Bonus: AUs. I don't generally read AUs, but these two worked for me, in very different ways that still felt very silverflint.
did the twin flame bruise paint you blue by Jaynovz (138k) Novel length mod AU where silverflint broke up, and we see their relationship along two different timelines, before and after. Toxic fucked up goodness, lots of BDSM dynamics, bonus silvervane! All set in NYC.
holy ghost fire by ajaxthegreat (~52k) Appalachia horror au! The author clearly knows the area, and silverflint is already a ghost story, so it works really well. If you've ever been there you'll know how right it feels, if not, just trust me.
extra bonus: fic event collections and rec lists
kinkmeme
built on sand
beach blanket black sails
@jaynovz has also compiled a number of much more specific rec lists, which can be found at #jay's esoteric rec lists

req for a kinda specific scenario so i hope i can explain it well lol
Reader/(Y/N) x Kalim thingy where you’ve been dating Kalim for a little and while he’s not ashamed of it, he is kinda trying to keep it a secret from his family. When you ask, he’s just vaguely says he’s worried about how they’d react and you assume it’s bc of some taboo. Well, somehow the news gets leaked to his family and all of a sudden, his entire family is sending you gifts and congratulations to Kalim for finding his first spouse. They’re asking Kalim “when’s the wedding,” and that was the actual reason Kalim was so worried about telling them.
kalim keeping his s/o a secret ✧・゚

.
Hello anon! I am so sorry this took me so long! I had chronic pain issues and then I sprained my finger?? (Shout out to my dog for that one, she barrelled into my hand! xD)
I really like this scenario! I have my own OC (her name is December!) shipped with Kalim so I like writing him and his sunshine self. But enough about me and my blorbos, this blog isn't about my sillies.
Scarabia isn't my top dorm but I do love them a lot as I love all the cast of twst. I hope I did your (very cute) idea justice, I think you explained it well btw! No worries!
Thank you for requesting!!!
.
Summary: [Name] is the partner of Kalim though Kalim insists on keeping it a secret... But. Why is that exactly? Maybe Jamil knows.
TW/CW: None
Notes: established relationship, the reader is Ramshackle Prefect/Yuu, they/them pronouns for the reader

Kalim Al-Asim
Tumblr media
Kalim doesn't mean to keep it a secret!
He wants to tell his family! He tells Jamil about it sometimes even though Jamil just sighs and says it's Kalim's decision, not his.
But in the end, he keeps [Name] a secret from the Asims.
He tells [Name] to not post him publically or tell anyone tied to his family about their relationship (except Najma, she knows!)
Kalim knows that it doesn't thrill [Name].. but he doesn't want them to get overwhelmed by his family (he knows they're a lot).
Kalim, though, realizes that this is the wrong course.
It occurs to him when he sees how sad they are...
Jamil tells him that night what happened with [Name].
[Name] had gone to Jamil for relationship advice??
They... they think his family hates them? Disapproves??
What? No no! He has to fix this!
He never wanted to make them sad!
So he comes clean. He tells them why he hid things.
They send a message to his family.... and then the gifts come.
So many that they need an extra treasury (Jamil has a headache)
Kalim can only hope that this quells their worries-
Also, their wedding will be as soon as they graduate.
That's not a request, it's a command from his father and mother.
Kalim had been acting strange. Well, not strange, just... worrying. It hadn't sat well with [Name]. They loved their boyfriend, so much, they didn't want him to be stressed! In fact, Kalim normally wasn't stressed at all. he was one of the most carefree people they could think of, so why was he worried now?
It had all started, [Name] noted, when they had asked Kalim if he would be telling his parents of their relationship. Kalim had seemed nervous for a moment before swiftly changing the subject to whether he should get them more food from the party. Jamil's cooking was always nice, but they had wanted an answer.
It happened more after that, he would dodge the question each time.
Did he... did he not want to tell them?
Why were they only allowed to tell school friends and Najma about it? Why was the only one close to Kalim besides Jamil who who was allowed to know Najma? They liked her, of course, but what about Kalim's family? His siblings? His parents?
They sighed, suddenly not wanting to continue their studying. Putting down their pen, they packed a back and turned towards the stairway that led to the bedrooms.
"Grim! Want to come on a field trip?" they shouted.
Some clattering was heard before Grim emerged, coming up next to them and nodding. Something about there being good food out there to eat and that being much better than napping or homework.
"I can't wait to eat something!" Grim cried out on the way to the main building, "We haven't had anything super good today!"
"We're not going for the food," they reminded, walking towards the mirror that led to Scarabia's dormitory, "But you can try Jamil."
"Are you sure, nya? Jamil always says 'no' when I ask."
"I'm sure you can try, but you know how he is."
It was bright and hot in Scarabia, that was how it always was. There was plenty of sand and a startling amount of elephants for Kalim's parades, something that [Name] enjoyed and that was a staple from the Scalding Sands (Jamil had explained that much).
Walking into the main lounge, they spotted Jamil helping some underclassman with their homework. Kalim was not present. The time to act was now. They walked forward and plopped down next to the long-haired boy.
"Hi, Jamil!" they greeted, not noticing him jolt at first.
"[Name]? Hello," Jamil said, composing himself, "Did you need something?"
That was how he was, always straight to business. As Kalim's servant and his partner, Jamil and [Name] had spent enough time with each other to be familiar with each other's mannerisms.
"I wanted your advice... if you have the time. It's about Kalim," they told him, watching as Jamil distanced from the students he was helping to listen to them, "I think Kalim is embarrassed by me."
Jamil gave a bit of a surprised look their way.
"Kalim, embarrassed by you? That seems unlikely. Nothing embarrasses him, I should know... I've had a share to pay for that trait of his..."
[Name] nodded in understanding and Jamil continued.
"But as you do not lie, you think that he is upset by something?" Jamil asked, "And. What brought this up?"
[Name] hesitated but revealed the reason why after a moment.
"He won't... tell anyone outside of school and Najma about us..."
"Ah."
Jamil's response was a bit lackluster.
"Does that mean that the Asims cannot know about us? Do they hate me? I know you said Kalim's family is very powerful..."
[Name] was giving themself considerable anxiety with the thoughts.
"They are. House Asim is one of the most powerful families in our nation... That said, I do not think they would disapprove of you. As rigid as they can be, they want Kalim to be happy... in the end."
"I see... So then... why?" [Name] asked.
What did it all mean? Was Kalim not upset with them?
"I will speak to Kalim. Does that solve it?"
"I mean..."
"Good, we shall leave it at that for now," Jamil cut [Name] off.
"Alright. Thank you, Jamil..." [Name] told him.
"Of course, you are the partner to my Master, I owe this to you."
Jamil offered a rare smile toward [Name], an expression that comforted them. Jamil was capable after all, if he was sure... Then it would all work out in the end.
. . .
[Name] had been unsure if Jamil speaking to Kalim had worked. The next day nothing seemed different about Kalim. He was his typical happy self, running up to them to envelop them in a big hug.
"[NAME]!!" he called out to them, nuzzling against their shoulder.
"Kalim?? Hi!" [Name] greeted, a bit confused by the sudden embrace that was tighter than usual, almost desperate.
"I'm so sorry," Kalim began, baffling [Name] once more.
"What?"
[Name] blinked in surprise, unsure how to proceed.
"I didn't know it was hurting you! You even had to ask Jamil for help," Kalim told them, brows furrowed, "I never wanted to cause you any stress, I love you so much, I'm very sorry I didn't notice."
It clicked. Jamil must have said something intense.
"So Jamil talked to you?"
Kalim nodded.
"Yeah! So I came here as soon as I could to tell you the truth!"
[Name] paused. Poor Jamil.
"Does Jamil know you're here?"
"Maybe!" came the answer from Kalim.
"Kalim..."
"He'll be fine, he's prepping food at the moment!"
"Party?" [Name] asked, knowing the answer.
"Party!!"
"Well, then..." [Name] began, "Let's talk inside, okay?"
They led Kalim into Ramshackle's living room and sat down on the couch, gesturing to the spot next to him. Kalim sat down instantly, not one to turn down that kind of invitation.
"So, continue?" [Name] prompted him.
"Right! I'm so so sorry! I didn't mean to hurt you. My family doesn't think badly of you, I promise... they're just... a lot??" Kalim explained, gesturing a bit as he did as if unsure how to explain properly.
"You..." [Name] was surprised by glad to hear his words, "You aren't hiding me from them because they disapprove?"
"What?? No!! They will love you! They will love you... a lot. And I know you said lots of things at once are overwhelming and I didn't want you to get overwhelmed by them so I said not to tell them... And. Sorry!!"
Kalim's apology explanation came out in a jumble of words.
"Huh..."
So that's why. It was relieving to hear. They don't hate [Name].
"Are you okay? Can I do something to make it up to you?" Kalim asked them, leaning closer, "I want to make it up to you."
"Hmmm" [Name] thought, "Why don't we tell your family?"
"Ahh??? Okay! Just remember they are... intense, haha!"
Kalim seemed to be back to his happy self now.
"Alright... I think I am ready for that!" [Name] agreed.
. . .
24 hours later, perhaps [Name] was not ready to be perceived by the Asims. On the Main Street of campus, an elephant was being led to the school building followed by a caravan full of trunks.
What?? HUH??
"Kalim, what's that?" they asked, gesturing to the parade.
"That is your welcome gift!" Kalim cheered.
"My what? The trunks?"
[Name] was floored.
"The elephant and everything in the trunks!"
"Why?" [Name] asked, looking between her schoolmates and her boyfriend in confusion, "What did I do to earn an elephant??"
"You're a member of the family so you must have everything an Asim would have," Jamil commented, sighing at the sight of the parade (something he would have to smooth over, surely).
"Where am I even going to put it, Kalim?" [Name] asked him.
"You can store things in Scarabia if you'd like!"
"Kalim, don't offer things without asking me first."
.
Imagine the rest for yourself~

"What are you doing?" Qimir suddenly turned around. You had been working for the master for quite some time and with Qimir even longer. This new mission for Mae, had sent you to Khofar. You just landed the ship and Qimir was acting strange. "Just checking something," you let him be. You could always ask him later.
He was your guide through this never ending forest as for some reason, he knew where the wookie jedi is. "Could we stop for a second?" You asked.
"No-"
"Sure! We're halfway there anyways," you didn't think hiking would be this difficult. You had no problem chasing or fighting but hiking is the issue. Mae had walked off, choosing to leave you two alone. But you knew she wasn't far off. Qimir had sat down next to you. "After this mission, I'm not gonna be working for him anymore." Qimir tensed up. "What? Why-"
"I have enough to live comfortably for a while. Plan on going to my home planet. Helping my family and just living life for a bit," something changed in his expression. "And that's if I survive telling the master." He got up. "I'm sure you'll do fine. Come on! Let's go," and so the trek continues. You started questioning why you even were here.
Then Mae disappeared. You walked trying to see where she went. Walking right into a trap. Mae decided now was the time to reveal herself. "Help me get them down," he was trying to see where the rope holding you up was tied to. "No, you two will only slow me down. You said it was right up ahead right?" He didn't know what to say and Mae left. Finally he cut you down.
That's when you heard them, the jedi. "You need to hide," he quickly helped you up and the two of you hid. "What about you?" Qimir didn't answer, running off in the direction of the jedi. You listened to him, despite knowing you could help him. Not much but it was still better than running in blind. He could get himself hurt. "Get up!" Mae told you.
You listen to her. You saw the massacre. It all started to make sense. The master is here. Why is Mae wearing white? He was fighting a padawan. "Stop or I'll kill them." She held a blaster to your head. "Osha!" You knew this would be the day you die. He doesn't care about you. You hoped that Qimir would have the courtesy to send the money to your family.
Suddenly, Osha was pushed back and the gun went off. Nowhere near you. "Yord, get them out of here." A jedi starts ushering you away from the fight to their ship, you assume. You were running for a long time. "What were you thinking? Osha, threatening a civilian?" Osha and Yord moved in front of you. "They work with him." The forest went quiet.
"Let's move!" Yord said as the master turned on his saber. How did he catch up to you so fast? You have no idea. Why were you running? So, you stopped. Yord turned to look at you, only to see the masked figure ignore you as he closed in on Yord and Osha. You didn't want to know what happened to either of them. You started walking in the opposite direction.
You felt someone behind you. You didn't have to turn around to know who it was. His lightsaber is still on. You couldn't move. The master was face to face with you. He didn't say a word. Your eyes wondered, not wanting to look at the metal mask anymore. Everything went dark.
[ ... ]
You'd woken up on a familiar planet. You'd only been here a few times. The master had brought you here. You didn't see Osha or Mae anywhere. Wasn't his big plan to have a student or something? Why did he bring you here now? You got up and started walking in a direction you vaguely remembered. That's when you spotted Qimir.
"What are you doing here? Where's Mae?" His smile made you feel better but as soon as you mentioned Mae, it turned sombre. "I flew us here. Mae's dead," you froze. "The master killed her along with the rest of the jedi." He moved closer to you. "What do we do now?" He ignored your question. His mind elsewhere. He slowly touched your face.
"I need to leave," his eyes snapped to yours. His grip tightening. "You aren't going anywhere. Not now. Not ever."

Of Scene Breaks and Plot Twists
Read here on Ao3!
Rated: G | Words: 2256 | Summary: The members of Clone Force 99 have an unwanted guest.
A/N: For Christmas, I wrote an entirely unserious, indulgent little fic because I can…so I did.
I am totally making fun of myself with this fic…apologies to the characters for not always (read: rarely) having a plan when I write.
I dedicate this story to every fanfic writer I know and don’t. May you never cease to amaze with your creativity and dedication to the art…you are a gift to the communities you partake in.
Tumblr media
“Alright, boys, settle down,” Hunter says, walking into the cockpit. “We’ve got our next mission.”
“Do we actually get to blow something up this time?” Wrecker asks, sitting up in the seat he was slouching in.
Crosshair takes out his toothpick and flicks it at Wrecker, the sliver of wood bouncing harmlessly off the giant’s shoulder. “Or shoot something?”
“We have been on three consecutive data retrieval missions with no enemy engagement,” Tech states.
Echo points out, “Which is a good thing. It means we did our job well.”
“It means they were boring!” Wrecker declares.
Tech and Crosshair nod.
“I won’t promise anything,” Hunter says, grinning, “However, there is a high probability of explosions and shooting taking place this time around.”
The news receives reactive sounds of approval from most of the members of Clone Force 99. However, Echo isn’t fooling anyone with his eye roll. He’s been craving action as much as any of his brothers.
“So, what is it?” Echo asks.
“What’s what?” Hunter asks.
Echo frowns at him. “The mission?”
Hunter looks down at the data pad in his hand. “I…I don’t know. Nothing’s come through.”
“But you just said–”
“Sorry, sorry! That’s my fault,” I say, pushing myself up from the wall I was leaning against. “I’m sorta writing this as I go. I have no idea what your mission is yet. The keyword here is yet, because I’m sure it will come to me as we go.”
I’m honestly not sure what sort of reaction I expected, but five blasters pulled on me was not on the agenda. I put my hands up, heart battering in my throat. “Woah, woah, hey!” I cry, “Don’t shoot!”
“Who are you and how did you get on our ship?” Hunter growls, blaster still carefully poised to take me out if I make any wrong move.
I swallow. “I’m a fanfic writer. I’m the one writing this story.”
Oh. This is my story. Ha, sorta forgot that I can just…
The Batch lower their weapons with bewildered expressions, and I breathe a sigh of relief.
“What just happened?” Wrecker asks. “Why’d we all lower our blasters like that?”
“I told you, I’m writing this story. I’m a fanfic writer,” I say, and, bolstered by my own abilities, I walk over and take a seat in behind Tech, turning the chair to face my darling characters. Aww, they look so sweet when they’re confused.
“You’re using some sort of mind trick,” Tech tells me. “You’re a Force user.”
I laugh. “I wish, but no. I’m just a humble fanfic writer, I promise.”
“You obviously know we don’t understand what that means,” Hunter says, and he sounds so annoyed. A little Crosshair-like, if I’m being honest. “So explain it. Now.”
Bossy.
“Fine,” I sigh, reaching in my back pocket and pulling out my phone.
Tech’s eyes light up, and I can tell he wants to ask about it; however, a sharp look from Hunter makes him settle back in the pilot’s chair. I make a mental note to show it to him once I’ve calmed everybody down.
For the sake of my gentle reader, I won’t get into the vaguely detailed explanation I gave the boys. It did not go well, and nobody calmed down. After all, how do you explain that someone’s reality and existence is fictional in your reality…without giving them spoilers for their futures? Then you would have to get into fix-its and canon and head canon and all that complicated jargon. Suffice to say, I had to again utilize my writing power to make them sit down and shut up for two seconds while I assured them that their lives were very much “real”, and that I am just trying to share one of their stories with my world…and also that I am making it up on the fly.
“I would like to study these works of fiction,” Tech says.
I ensure my phone is locked and secured in my pocket. “Mmm…maybe later.”
“So, basically,” Crosshair says, and somehow he manages to sound genuine and sarcastic at the same time, “you are calling all the shots and we have no freewill.”
I guess it does sound bad when he puts it like that.
“How about a compromise,” I say, “I’ll let you boys ‘call the shots’, and I’ll just write it down…if you stop threatening to shoot me out of the airlock. Deal?”
They collectively look unimpressed.
I continue stubbornly, “I’m not going anywhere until I have my story. I’ve been suffering from writer’s block for weeks, and this is the first decent idea I’ve had.”
“Half-baked is more like,” Echo grumbles. “Kriffing idiot.”
“See?” I say, splaying a hand at the cyborg, “If I were controlling everything, would I be letting y’all verbally assault me?”
“Let me shoot you with a blaster, and I’ll be convinced,” Crosshair says with a menacing flash of teeth that I think might be some sort of smile.
Suppressing a shudder, I roll my eyes. “The sooner I finish this story, the sooner I’ll get out of here. Then I’ll never bother you again…”
…In person.
I love internal dialogue.
“Fine,” Hunter agrees after a long, long bout of silence. “What’s our mission then?”
Oh. Right. That’s what started this whole mess in the first place.
Scrambling to come up with something, I say, “Alright, you should have a mission on your data pad now.”
Hunter looks down at his device. “It just says data extraction mission from blank.”
“Hey!” Wrecker objects, loudly, “I thought there was gonna be explosions and shooting!”
Tech takes the data pad from Hunter. “Not to mention the parameters of the mission are unfathomably vague.”
“Alright, alright,” I say, putting up my hands. “How about now?”
“Dangerous data extraction mission from insert planet name here,” Tech reads aloud.
Echo groans. “You have to give us more than that!”
“I don’t usually have to come up with all the details.”
“You’ve given us literally nothing,” Crosshair says, “Less than nothing.”
“You are making it very difficult to believe that anyone reads your stories willingly,” Tech says.
I narrow my eyes.
**
“What just happened?” Hunter asks.
We are in hyperspace, coordinates safely secured in the nav computer, boys fully aware of the mission parameters.
My work here is done.
“That, my friends, is called a scene break,” I say, leaning back in my chair. “Now, tell me about this mission.”
“Why would we go over it again?” Crosshair asks, annoyed. “We’ve been arguing strategy for the past hour.”
“So I can write it down.”
“What do you mean so you can write it down? I thought that’s what you were doing!”
I shake my head. “No, see, that’s the point of a scene break. I can skip writing all the monotony and just give readers the jist of it. So, give me the summary of the mission and I’ll write down the important bits I care about.”
Echo gapes at me. “You mean to tell me you still don’t know what the mission is?”
“Which is why you’re going to tell me,” I tell him patiently.
The boys exchange glances. I can see in their microexpressions that they’ve come to some sort of agreement that I am not going to like. Now wait a minute…
“Don’t tell the writer anything, boys,” Hunter says, turning back to the nav computer. “They get to come along for the ride, just like they wanted.”
“You can’t do that!” I cry.
“We just did, di’kut.” Crosshair begins polishing his rifle, the item having appeared during the scene break. “We’re in charge now.”
“Can you at least tell me where we’re going,” I implore weakly.
“Classified,” Echo says.
“Is it still a data extraction mission?”
Tech has the audacity to shrug. He’s scrolling through my phone. How…when…?
“Hey, give that back,” I say, lunging forward to snatch it from him.
He evades me easily, and I go sprawling across the durasteel floor.
Rolling over, I glare up at the commandos grinning down at me. “I’m still the writer,” I say, “I can still do whatever I want and know whatever I want.”
“Then why don’t you do it?” Crosshair taunts.
I must not be completely over my writer’s block after all, because nothing comes to mind. Somehow, the characters are in charge. Kriff.
“Tech,” I say, returning to the topic of my phone, “you can’t be looking at that stuff.”
“These tags are concerning,” Tech mutters, continuing to scroll as if I hadn’t said anything. “Hurt forward slash comfort? Angst? Fluff? Whump? What do these mean? That is, what is the context?”
I hate to do it, but I use my writing ability to put the phone back in my hands before Tech hurts himself emotionally. “Some things are better left unknown, Tech.”
“I swear,” Crosshair growls, “if any of those fanfics are sappy, I will shoot you out the airlock. I don’t care about our ‘deal’.”
“I’m not the only fanfic writer, okay? There are thousands of us.”
“Sounds like a nasty infestation,” Echo says.
“I’ll have you know,” I tell him primly, “we are a lovely community.”
Wrecker, the sweet boy, offers to help me to my feet, putting a hand out. I grip it and he hauls me up a little too roughly, nearly dislocating my shoulder. I grin at him nonetheless. “Thanks, Wreck.”
“Sure thing, writer,” he tells me. He leans in. “In those fanfic thingies you write, do I get to blow stuff up a lot?”
“Uhm, well,” I say, sitting back down, “it depends on the purpose of fic, really.”
“Whadda you mean? Aren’t they all just missions you make up for us?”
Crosshair huffs. “Or pretend to make up?”
“Listen,” I say, leaning around Wrecker to glare at the sniper, “I have writer’s block. Most of the time I think of legitimate missions.”
“Oh, yeah? Name one.”
“Well, one time, you were on this planet getting intel and the building that Echo and Tech was in collapsed and the rest of you had to dig them out.”
“What planet was it?”
“Doesn’t matter.”
“What was the intel?”
“Important.”
“So you just make whatever the kark you want up and people actually read it?” Echo asks.
Offended by the oversimplification of my work, I retort, “Well, I like to focus more on character development than missions. But that’s just me. Other writers are a heck of a lot better at writing mission stories.”
“Then how’d we get stuck with you?” Crosshair asks, throwing his wadded up polishing rag at me.
I wish I could say I caught it, but it hits me in the face.
“You know what,” I sputter, tossing the rag aside, “Scene…”
**
“...break.”
We are standing in the middle of a hall, surrounded on both sides by droids.
“Would you stop doing that?” Hunter shouts at me over the din of blasterfire.
I crouch down next to Tech at a control panel. “Hey, can I borrow one of your blasters?”
“Write yourself one,” he says, deadpan, keeping his focus on hacking into the Separatist system.
“It doesn’t work like that.”
Tech rolls his eyes and passes over one of his blasters. “Please take care not to shoot one of us.”
“I think I can handle it.”
I cannot handle it. My first shot goes wide and high, taking out a light in the ceiling. Before I can try again, someone snatches the blaster out of my hand.
“Give me that before you hurt yourself.” It’s Echo.
“If that’s a legitimate risk, let them keep it,” Crosshair calls out.
“Aw, don’t hurt yourself, little writer person,” Wrecker says, scooping me up under one arm, “I’ll protect ya!”
I kick my legs and flail my arms, dangling haplessly in his grip. “Put me down!”
“Not until we’re out of here,” Hunter orders.
Fine then.
**
We’re back on the Marauder. The boys’ dark armor is covered in spatters of dried mud, and the right lens of Tech’s goggles has a crack in it.
“What happened to you?” I ask, sitting comfortably in the pilot’s chair, unscathed.
“You’d know if you stuck around to find out,” Crosshair growls.
“Apparently, I was just in the way back there. So I skipped ahead.”
“You’ve been in the way this whole time,” Hunter mutters.
Oh. Those are fighting words.
I smile, and I hope it appears as devilish as I feel. “Plot twist.”
**
I’m not sure what the creature is, but it’s ugly. It’s covered in some sort of goo and it smells putrid.
And it’s gnawing on the Marauder. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have teeth, so the ship won’t be damaged, but it will leave a residue that probably won’t be fun to scrub off later.
“What in the universe is that?” Wrecker asks.
We’ve moved outside of the ship, and we’ve discovered that the creature simply absorbs blaster bolts and is completely unfazed. The boys will have to distract it somehow, lure it away.
How inconvenient.
“This was uncalled for,” Tech says, turning to glare at me.
“Did you see it coming?” I ask. When I am not dignified with a response from any of them, I add, “Plot twist successful.”
“How are we supposed to get rid of it?” Echo asks.
I shrug. “Maybe you boys will figure it out by the next chapter.”
“Wait, what do you mean ‘next chapter’?”
“And this is what we writers like to call,” I say, smiling sweetly, “a cliffhanger.”

A/N: Will I ever actually finish this fic?
Maybe.
Maybe not.

What are your thoughts on the recent chapter?
This is a pretty vague ask but I’m pretty sure I received it yesterday. If not… oops?
I’m actually so excited for the next—that is, the second to last—chapter as someone who was deeply affected by chapters 391-395 and who just loves Toga Himiko in general, so so much. I’ve really grown to love Ochako’s arc too and I’ve come to trust the process here. I didn’t know about everyone freaking out until after I read 428 officials yesterday, and I’m not worried like that. We’ve been in this type of cliffhanger situation multiple times before.
The news that the end of Himiko’s and Ochako’s fight wasn’t recorded hit me hard, just like it hits Ochako, because the world doesn’t get to know who Himiko really is. There’s nothing Ochako could say on her behalf that would compare to actual footage of her pain, anger, joy, love, sorrow, and sacrifice.
…which is to say, Himiko does not serve as a martyr, a tragic, cautionary example. I’ll remind you that that was what the PLF reporter wanted her to be, and she was controlling and patronizing. Let’s think about this as a choice Horikoshi is making, to discard the only ammunition he had to make Himiko into an example and have it be even remotely compelling and satisfying. Boom, gone. There’s no footage. Why?
On the other hand, this is actually an advantageous turn of events if it turns out Himiko survived, because more calculated actions can be taken to keep her safe. I’m starting to see this as a turning point not necessarily for society as a whole, but for the hero profession and its purpose, wherein under Hawks’ leadership the hero commission could become the exact opposite of what it was. It’s no accident that the first half of this chapter is devoted to showing how the next generation and the public were both ~so inspired~ by class A’s actions in a way that mimics the chain of inspiration that motivated class A to begin with. Only this time, Ochako and Izuku are deeply uncomfortable with it! They don’t want this chain reaction to keep going the same way forever. These people look at them and have no idea what they’re actually going through or what they’ve seen. Future heroes who don’t know the real story. That’s very upsetting. Now they are starting to see firsthand how a pattern of collective forgetting is perpetuated. It won’t change until someone like Himiko is actually saved. No bright future without a place for her in it.
I’m excited because this chapter directly confirms Ochako’s awkward, overly cheerful mask for what it is, as it finally starts to crumble. In hindsight, she’s probably done this a lot in the past as well. It casts her whole character in a new light. She and Himiko are so much alike in this way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I still have high hopes for this storyline because of how much it resonates with me as a queer allegory. Of course, Himiko is also literally queer, but I mean the symbolic stuff about her quirk and her family’s rejection. As a trans person who spent a long time in the closet convincing everyone around me that I was a normal, happy girl, whose pain and rage only festered and grew stronger, who was perceived as selfish and destructive, who was determined to live for myself but still doubted if I had any future at all… I see Himiko’s story as so perfect, so real, that I can’t imagine it ending poorly. And it doesn’t have shit to do with canonizing that ship, either. I’m not worried.

Linguistic drift
A faint presence touched his consciousness, and Master Ikrit’s muscles twitched.
He fell out of his trance with an exhalation, then stretched himself out.
As a kushiban, he had two long ears, and a vaguely lapine face, and four paws supporting his body with a long tail behind him. He was covered all over in off-white fur, and he weighed about ten pounds.
This made him noticeably smaller than his old Master, but his old Master had been noticeably smaller than just about everyone else so that had never really bothered him.
Stifling a yawn, Ikrit exchanged stretching muscles for stretching his senses, and he felt the Force around him for answers.
The Palace of the Woolamander remained closed. That much, at least, was good news… and that he had woken at all meant that there was someone nearby who could touch the Force.
Flicking his tail, Ikrit felt for their presence, and detected a flowing current of light. Like a miniature humming whirl of sound going up and down the scales, muted but still present.
They were definitely heading in this direction, and there were others with them. Not sensitive to the Force, not like the single presence he could feel strongly, but it told him that they were moving towards him using some kind of airspeeder – or spacecraft.
Next, the small Jedi Master felt for his own internal sense of time – and flicked his ears, trying to hide his somewhat embarrassed surprise.
It seemed he had been in hibernation for around three hundred and seventy standard years.
Master Yoda would never have approved of quite such a long nap, and right now Ikrit wondered if perhaps he should have done something else.. but what was done was done, and he let his embarrassment go into the Force.
Then he focused, and sprang up to the roof of the Palace with a single spring.
He was going to need to ask the visitors for help, after all.
“Any idea who built these temples, General?” Bail asked, looking around. “This one’s designed differently to the other two, but it’s got to be the same style – despite being so far apart.”
“We don’t have much,” Dodonna replied, apologetically. “A lot about the moon has been lost, but that’s exactly what makes it a suitable base location – we can hide a lot of power signatures behind this much stone.”
He glanced at Bail’s daughter, who was looking around herself with great interest. “Are you sure it’s a good idea to bring her along?”
“I’m sure Princess Leia is quite able to keep silent on important matters,” Bail replied. “Isn’t that correct?”
“Of course,” Leia replied, with a smile. “I haven’t told anyone about the thing.”
“The thing?” Bail repeated, amused.
“Oh, I couldn’t explain,” Leia replied. “After all, then I would have told someone about it.”
She frowned, slightly. “What exactly are we trying to do here?”
“Investigate the thickness of the walls, mostly,” Bail told her. “Like Dodonna said, thick walls can conceal power signatures – if the walls are thick enough, this could be an independent base.”
“Or if they’re less thick, they might still make for a good satellite base,” Dodonna added. “To cover an evacuation, if the main base is found out – an unexpected fighter strike coming from a novel location can do a lot for clearing the air.”
“Got it,” Leia said. “And how can I help?”
“Carrying a sensor pack should do,” Bail suggested. “We can get good density and dispersal readings by flying the ship over while there’s sensor packs in different parts of the structure.”
He winked at Dodonna. “I’ve learned a few things myself, General.”
“I wouldn’t want to suggest otherwise!” Dodonna replied, with a chuckle. “I’ll get my men turned out – and an extra pack for the Princess.”
Ikrit’s ears twitched, as he watched the group disembark. They were mostly humans, with a scattering of other races.
No kushiban, but he was expecting that. His people were mostly not wanderers.
The problem was, what he could hear indicated that there had been some quite serious linguistic drift… which meant he could have serious trouble making himself understood.
On the plus side, though, being this close let him pinpoint the person with the ability to touch the Force. Ikrit could work past at least some of the problems by working with concepts, allowing the other adept – a human girl, not yet into her full growth – to fill in his meaning without him needing to use exactly the right words.
He could also see where she was going, and turned to scamper down into the Palace to get ahead of her.
A few minutes of going down though the Palace’s chambers – much the same as they had been over three hundred and fifty years ago, except for the precise layout of plants – and Ikrit was ready to introduce himself.
Introduce himself to a girl who was very strong in the Force, but who bore no Padawan’s braid and who had no sign of that strength being trained.
It was quite strange, but Ikrit shook himself out, then appeared out from behind a rock with a smile as the girl entered a corridor.
“Greetings,” he said, weighting his words with the Force and aiming to let the concepts he was transmitting flow through the air. “It is nice to meet you.”
The girl stopped, and blinked at him.
“You (communicate<>can talk)?” she asked.
“Yes,” Ikrit agreed. “I am not quite speaking your language.”
“I can (understand you<>follow your meaning),” the girl replied, looking confused. “How?”
“The Force,” Ikrit replied. “You could do it as well. If you agree to a mutual connection, with my help you can become a female-padawan.”
Leia stared at the strange creature smiling up at her, covered in fine white fur.
“It’s something (you)(can learn),” he said. “If you (make a contract)(with me), you can become (a magical girl)!”

Warrior Song 15
Find the series masterlist
Well, we made it to the end of this fic. This is not the last I'll write of Master Chief, but I may take a break for a bit. I think I managed to wrap up everything with this last chapter, but if you have any lingering questions, I'd love to hear them!
Now, let's get this lot squared away, shall we?
Warnings: Swearing, mention of injuries, little bit of politics, everything will be okay.
Word count: 2.7k
Tumblr media
By the time you caught up to John, there were a group of Sangheili walking towards him. He didn't have a weapon in hand, so you figured it was safe enough.
“Master Chief,” the one in front greeted, silvery armor different from what you were used to seeing. “It has been a long time.”
“Arbiter.” Chief inclined his head, ever so slightly.
“You are a difficult man to find.”
Chief just shrugged. You held back your laughter.
“How did you find us?” Fernando joined you on your other side, subtly bracing you to help you get weight off your injured leg.
“There was unusual slipspace activity,” Arbiter said calmly. “Whoever was controlling the computer was sloppy - pieces fell through, and from them we were able to determine the coordinates of this weapon.”
You blinked. You’d gotten probably half of that, but you were also exhausted, so. Whatever.
“We have injured,” Chief cut in, fortunately not looking down at you. “Limited supplies.”
“I have enough to share,” Arbiter agreed easily. “I will summon aid as well from the nearest human ships. In the meantime, you must tell me what happened here.”
Chief nodded once, taking a step forward. Kelly (who had appeared from nowhere and nearly gave you a heart attack) ushered you and Fernando away, more or less gently.
“Kelly, what–?” You started to ask, frowning.
“You are supposed to be resting,” she reminded you. “I could always carry you.”
You huffed but didn’t object further. Okay. Fine. So she was right. But you wanted to know what was going on!
Somehow you ended up back in bed, pouting, a tray of food on your lap and Kelly making sure you and Fernando both ate. (Fernando opted to sit on the floor.)
After the third time you huffed at your food, Kelly huffed back at you.
“Keep that up and I won’t ask Fred for updates.”
You pouted harder but ate in silence.
Vaguely, you could hear the camp buzzing around you, excited voices and the stomp of feet and movement all combining into one continuous drone. You’d bet news of the Sangheili ships had spread fast. Or maybe they’d heard about the human ships coming to aid too? How long would that take? How long had you been asleep, even? Long enough for Arbiter to arrive, clearly, but how long had that taken?
“Stop thinking,” Kelly advised, poking your cheek.
“Easy for you to say,” you grumbled. And then paused.
Welp. You were dead.
Kelly huffed a tiny laugh. “So the explosion did knock the sense out of you,” she teased.
You had no defense for that, so you just hunkered down in your bed, ears burning. At least you weren’t as sore today, though probably still some level of dehydrated. Your thigh was definitely the worst of your injuries still.
“Why did you blow up Atriox?”
The sudden question from Fernando startled you, and you blinked rapidly as you refocused on him. “It seemed like a good idea at the time? And, I mean, it’s not like he was friendly.”
Fernando shook his head. “No, I know that, but why you?”
Oh. That was the issue. You swallowed, looking down at the blanket pulled up over your lap. “It’s not like I sat there and debated the pros and cons,” you started slowly, picking at a loose thread. “It just… happened. I was there. I had a grenade. Nobody else was close enough, and he was doing something, and I couldn’t think of any other way to stop him.”
Fernando perched next to you, taking one of your hands in his, ducking his head a little to meet your gaze. “Hey, hey, it’s okay, you got out okay, yeah?”
You sniffled once, hands starting to shake. “Only because of John,” you whispered, shaking your head a little. “It was dumb, but I couldn’t do nothing.”
Fernando wordlessly pulled you into him, one hand patting your back gently but a little awkwardly as you fought back tears.
“Here. Tea.” Kelly nudged you, ever aware of her strength, holding a mug until you took it. Fernando looked a little relieved, honestly. You couldn’t blame him.
“Any idea how long things will take?” You took a sip of the tea. A little bland, but warm and soothing.
Kelly shrugged, a monumental shift of broad shoulders. “Arbiter is chatty. Could be a while. Longer for ships to arrive.”
Naturally. You made a face but didn’t protest, just drinking your tea. You still felt unsteady, like thinking too hard about anything might tip you out of balance again. Logically, you knew you shouldn’t be surprised - you’d had a harrowing experience that was going to stay with you for a long time.
But logic was hard to come by when you were busy wrestling your emotions back under control.
The quiet was almost too much, after the stress of the last few days. But it was good, too - at least it meant there wasn’t any further excitement. Against your will, your head started to dip, eyelids growing heavy. The quiet was also very good for making you sleepy, at least when you were running on so little sleep.
Fernando pushed you to take a nap, promising he’d wake you when something happened.
So when you did wake up, bleary and confused, to someone sitting next to you, you thought it was Fernando.
“Go back to sleep,” John murmured, voice low and rough. A heavy arm settled over your waist as John laid down behind you, already dressed down.
“What happened?” you asked, voice still thick with sleep.
“Nothing yet.” He breathed out slowly, tickling the back of your neck. “Sleep.”
You huffed half-heartedly. You wanted more answers. But the furnace-like heat of him was soothing, his even breathing lulling you back to sleep before you could voice a complaint.
You woke next time over-warm, restless and finally alert again. It took a bit of doing to get out from under John’s arm, but you did it.
Only to find him awake, lips twitching with the barest of smiles, eyes bright with amusement. You dropped your head, torn between embarrassment and amusement.
“How long have you been awake?”
“Long enough.” He didn’t move, just watching you.
“Good, you can catch me up on everything that I missed yesterday.” You sat up carefully, mindful of your bruises and aches.
John shrugged, looking up at you while still reclined. “Nothing interesting.”
“Nothing interesting?” Your eyebrows shot up. “Somehow I doubt that.”
John shrugged again, though his lips twitched. He knew exactly what he was doing. “Arbiter has agreed to give us aid,” he said, either taking pity on you or deciding not to test your patience. “UNSC ships are on the way, but it’ll take time for them to get here.”
You nodded, not quite sure how you felt about that. You’d been away for so long, and then this Halo had become its own kind of existence. You didn’t know what would happen after this, anxiety rising at all the possibilities parading through your mind.
You breathed in slowly. You didn’t need to have all the answers right now. You were okay. You had time.
John was watching you, though he didn’t reach for you. He just watched.
You managed a little smile. “Breakfast?” Sure, you did both need to eat, but also you needed out of this conversation and out of your head.
That got him moving, and it wasn’t long until the two of you were walking to get food. Your thigh ached, forcing you to go slower than normal, but you grit your teeth and worked through it. John didn’t offer to carry you, which was good because you probably would have hurt yourself smacking him.
It was odd to see Sangheili around the base, standing taller than most everybody else. They kept out of the way, mostly, though a few of them had humans with them. You couldn’t hear the conversations, but you imagined mostly it was to do with supplies. Probably.
John still attracted stares, as always, and you could just hear murmurs rippling through camp about the encounter with the Endless. How anybody knew, you weren’t sure, and you weren’t sure you cared to find out. It didn’t really matter, anyway. Soldiers were terrible gossips, so the story was bound to get around and probably even grow.
But he wasn't the only one attracting stares.
You finally caught on when someone ahead of you in the chow line actually stopped and turned to look at you. Not at John. At you.
“John,” you whispered, gaze flitting from person to person, uncertain.
“Ignore them,” he muttered, gaze flicking down to yours before he gently nudged you forward.
You frowned but didn't say anything more, just getting your food and then finding an empty table. The stares bothered you though, in a way they never had when it was just John people stared at.
And then Fred plopped down next to you, making the bench shudder under his sudden weight, the bulk of him blocking most of the rest of the room from your view. The arm he threw over your shoulders helped.
“Good to see you awake,” he rumbled, flashing you a smile.
“Thanks.” You relaxed, finally doing more than just poking at your food. “What did I miss?”
“Oh, not much.” Fred smirked down at you. “Just that you became a legend.”
You choked on your bite of food. There were several moments of flurry as both Spartans tried to help, until you were no longer choking. “What?” You managed to ask, a little wheezy still.
Fred and John exchanged a look before Fred cleared his throat. “Well,” Fred started, unusually slowly. “Word has gotten around about your part in defeating Atriox.”
“I'm sorry, my what? My part?” You couldn't quite help the way your voice slowly went up in pitch.
“You did roll a grenade under him,” John pointed out, entirely too reasonably.
“That was hardly anything,” you pointed out, gaze darting between the two Spartans. “I was mostly useless.”
“You survived.” Fred spoke quietly, almost gently, his gaze fixed on you.
Your jaw dropped a little and you looked between the two rapidly, not sure how you felt. How you should feel. Your head throbbed, too much too soon, and you shoved away from the table abruptly. It felt like every eye in the mess was on you as you walked swiftly out, palms clammy, breathing fast.
You didn't want any of this. You hadn't done that for recognition, or anything like that. You'd just wanted to help.
A call of your name finally jerked you to a halt, and you blinked rapidly. You'd made it almost all the way to the edge of camp, the Pelican not far from you. Fernando watched from the open door, hair extra ruffled.
“You okay?” He asked, brow furrowing in his concern.
“Just…” You shrugged, hands flapping uselessly at your side as words failed you entirely.
Fernando didn't push. Instead he stepped down onto the grass, walking over to you. He looked at you, closely enough that you weren't sure what to think, before he nodded once.
“I see you learned part of why I avoid the mess.”
That startled a huff out of you. “I think so,” you agreed, dry but more settled.
“Come on, got some rations here.” Fernando dropped his arm over your shoulders, leading you into the Pelican. “Did Chief bother to catch you up on the actual news?”
“I think so,” you murmured, settling easily into the copilot seat and taking the bar that Fernando handed you. “We're getting supplies and stuff from the Sangheili, and human ships are on the way to us.”
“That's about it,” Fernando agreed. “Joy says it shouldn't be more than a week.”
“Right!” Joy popped to life between the two of you with an easy smile. “And then everybody will get to go home!”
Home. The thought filled your chest with an odd ache. You weren't ready to think about home yet. “But we've had so much fun here,” you snarked. “What are we doing about the remaining Endless?”
Joy shrugged, though the look she shot to Fernando was almost worried. “I don't think that's been decided yet.”
“You are doing nothing,” Fernando scolded, even as he held out a canteen to you. “You are staying where it is safe.”
You snorted. “I'm staying with John.”
Fernando eyed you, clearly debating if he could win an argument. His lips twitched. “Stubborn.”
You laughed quietly. “What's that old saying? Pot something kettle?”
Fernando just snickered at you. “Finish eating,” he ordered you. “And drink more water.”
You blinked at him, momentarily nonplussed. “Since when did you get bossy?” But you took another bite of the bar.
“Since things keep happening and you keep getting hurt.” Fernando watched you to make sure you ate and drank before he finally looked away, satisfied.
Silence settled between the two of you, comfortable after all this time together.
You wondered if you'd still be able to find this kind of quiet after the rescue ships arrived.
“You know you're not going to end up alone, right?”
You jerked your gaze to Fernando, who wasn't even looking at you, but out at the view ahead of you both. It looked deceptively peaceful, with only a few lingering marks of humanity around.
“I don't…” You swallowed, not sure how to finish that sentence.
“Chief will follow you wherever you go,” Fernando continued. “And I'm with him. Pretty sure Blue Team follows him too, mostly. So you won't be alone.”
You breathed through the shock and revelation of that. You'd unpack that issue another day.
“Neither will you,” you pointed out, giving him the same courtesy of watching the long grass sway.
Both of you pretended not to notice signs of high emotion in the other.
Heavy boots coming up the ramp made you both turn, watching as John approached. He didn’t say anything, just stood calmly between the two of you, one hand resting on your shoulder.
He didn’t magically make things better. The panic still gnawed at your chest, the ache in your thigh hadn’t abated, and the dampness under your eyes hadn’t suddenly gone away.
But you felt better, anyway. Just having John at your side helped.
Things weren’t okay, and possibly never would be. But you were all alive.
That was enough.
It took a week for human ships to arrive.
Arbiter had led an assault against the remaining Endless, with Blue Team of course. You stayed behind, with Fernando threatening to sit on you. You did hear afterwards that there were fewer Endless than anticipated. Kelly seemed relaxed… except for the tap of her fingers against her thigh.
But there was nothing else to be done. If some Endless somehow managed to get off the Halo, nobody knew how, or where they had gone. There was nothing to be done.
It took a little time to arrange evacuation - the wounded went first, then everyone else. Chief, of course, insisted on being on the Pelican, along with Blue Team and yourself. Fernando, of course, was piloting.
You personally made sure Lindsay and Carter got on board a ship.
It was odd, seeing the base so empty. Not many were left beyond a few Sangheili and the last of the survivors of the Infinite.
“Strange, isn’t it?” Fernando murmured, unconsciously mirroring your thoughts, even as he stood next to you.
“It is.” Your lips twisted in some complicated expression. You wouldn’t miss life here. You’d never miss those months of fear and cold and survival. But all the same… “Just as strange to suddenly be going back.”
Fernando hummed soft understanding. “It’s not all bad,” he said with a little teasing nudge of his elbow to your ribs.
“No,” you agreed, hearing John coming up behind the two of you. “Not all.”
“These are the last to board,” John informed you, one big hand settling at your waist. “The Pelican is loaded.”
You breathed in deep, slowly. This Halo truly was beautiful.
Maybe someday you’d be able to look at long grass and flowers again.
“Let’s go,” you said, turning away from the view to look up at John, staring into the familiar gold of his visor.
Even though you couldn’t see his expression, you knew he smiled. Just a little. Just for you. “Together.”

What objections would you actually accept to AI?
Roughly in order of urgency, at least in my opinion:
Problem 1: Curation
The large tech monopolies have essentially abandoned curation and are raking in the dough by monetizing the process of showing you crap you don't want.
The YouTube content farm; the Steam asset flip; SEO spam; drop-shipped crap on Etsy and Amazon.
AI makes these pernicious, user hostile practices even easier.
Problem 2: Economic disruption
This has a bunch of aspects, but key to me is that *all* automation threatens people who have built a living on doing work. If previously difficult, high skill work suddenly becomes low skill, this is economically threatening to the high skill workers. Key to me is that this is true of *all* work, independent of whether the work is drudgery or deeply fulfilling. Go automate an Amazon fulfillment center and the employees will not be thanking you.
There's also just the general threat of existing relationships not accounting for AI, in terms of, like, residuals or whatever.
Problem 3: Opacity
Basically all these AI products are extremely opaque. The companies building them are not at all transparent about the source of their data, how it is used, or how their tools work. Because they view the tools as things they own whose outputs reflect on their company, they mess with the outputs in order to attempt to ensure that the outputs don't reflect badly on their company.
These processes are opaque and not communicated clearly or accurately to end users; in fact, because AI text tools hallucinate, they will happily give you *fake* error messages if you ask why they returned an error.
There's been allegations that Mid journey and Open AI don't comply with European data protection laws, as well.
There is something that does bother me, too, about the use of big data as a profit center. I don't think it's a copyright or theft issue, but it is a fact that these companies are using public data to make a lot of money while being extremely closed off about how exactly they do that. I'm not a huge fan of the closed source model for this stuff when it is so heavily dependent on public data.
Problem 4: Environmental maybe? Related to problem 3, it's just not too clear what kind of impact all this AI stuff is having in terms of power costs. Honestly it all kind of does something, so I'm not hugely concerned, but I do kind of privately think that in the not too distant future a lot of these companies will stop spending money on enormous server farms just so that internet randos can try to get Chat-GPT to write porn.
Problem 5: They kind of don't work
Text programs frequently make stuff up. Actually, a friend pointed out to me that, in pulp scifi, robots will often say something like, "There is an 80% chance the guards will spot you!"
If you point one of those AI assistants at something, and ask them what it is, a lot of times they just confidently say the wrong thing. This same friend pointed out that, under the hood, the image recognition software is working with probabilities. But I saw lots of videos of the Rabbit AI assistant thing confidently being completely wrong about what it was looking at.
Chat-GPT hallucinates. Image generators are unable to consistently produce the same character and it's actually pretty difficult and unintuitive to produce a specific image, rather than a generic one.
This may be fixed in the near future or it might not, I have no idea.
Problem 6: Kinetic sameness.
One of the subtle changes of the last century is that more and more of what we do in life is look at a screen, while either sitting or standing, and making a series of small hand gestures. The process of writing, of producing an image, of getting from place to place are converging on a single physical act. As Marshall Macluhan pointed out, driving a car is very similar to watching TV, and making a movie is now very similar, as a set of physical movements, to watching one.
There is something vaguely unsatisfying about this.
Related, perhaps only in the sense of being extremely vague, is a sense that we may soon be mediating all, or at least many, of our conversations through AI tools. Have it punch up that email when you're too tired to write clearly. There is something I find disturbing about the idea of communication being constantly edited and punched up by a series of unrelated middlemen, *especially* in the current climate, where said middlemen are large impersonal monopolies who are dedicated to opaque, user hostile practices.
Given all of the above, it is baffling and sometimes infuriating to me that the two most popular arguments against AI boil down to "Transformative works are theft and we need to restrict fair use even more!" and "It's bad to use technology to make art, technology is only for boring things!"
