Bumping into Strangers
Tumblr media
Character: Benny Watts A/n: Finally finished a benny request even if it took me 10 years and a contract with the devil.
*
You tapped your foot against the pristine marble floor of the hotel lobby, adjusting the arsenal of camera equiptment you had shoved under your arms to prepare for the chess match later today. You were placed in charged of gathering photos for the new Chess Review edition, the first real professional project of your career. To say you were nervous was the understatement of the year.
You shuffled through your camera bag, strategizing the kinds of lenses you might have to use throughout the day. The lighting in the hotel was pretty dim, the thick brown curtains lazily swaying over most of the windows did little to help bring in any natural light. Luckily, you noticed a rather large chandelier hanging over the area where most of the chess boards were situated. It sort of reminded you of an old smoking room in a gentleman’s club, but given the sort of people surrounding you, it wasn’t that far off.
You tilted your head, taking a few paces forward as you tried to scope out the area better. Usually, you’d have gotten this out of the way earlier in the morning. But Benny insisted upon introducing you to more of his chess associates and promised you could kick him in the ass for it later, proclaiming your irrefutable talent would be more than enough to get you through the day.
Still walking forward, you didn’t even notice someone heading right towards you until the both of you collided. The sudden weight sent you stumbling backwards, and you probably would’ve fallen right on your back had the stranger not reached out for you.
His hands held firmly onto your shoulders, helping you regain your balance before you could fall.
“Are you alright?” The stranger said in a slightly alarmed tone, his brows shot upwards and his eyes wide.
It took you a moment to process what exactly happened, and you blinked before your brain caught up to speed.
“Yes! Gosh, I’m so sorry,” You fumbled, feeling the heat crawl up your neck when you realized how you were at the fault. “I wasn’t paying attention at all.”
The man smiled, the curls on his forehead shaking whenever his laugh and doing little to help your embarrassment. He looked down at your camera and his eyes lit up. “Is that a Pentax?”
Your eyebrows knit together, not knowing how he knew what camera you used, but you followed his gaze and realized you were wearing it around your neck.
“Oh! Yeah it’s-“
“Everything alright here?”
You whipped your head over at the sound of the familiar voice, smiling when you saw Benny standing just a ways off from the two fo you.
He had one of his hands hanging loosely by his belt loop as his eyes darted between you and the other man. His brows furrowed into a deep frown, his gaze shifting to the man’s hands, which you now realized were still holding onto your shoulders.
You and him must’ve realized the same thing because he immediately released his hold on you and you both awkwardly laughed as you took a step back.
“Yes! We’re okay, I just wasn’t paying attention so I ran right into…,” You faltered, remembering you never got his name.
He must’ve sensed your distress because he picked it up for you. “Jaime,” he said, looking back at you for a moment with a smile. “It was both of our faults really.”
Benny crossed his arms, looking at you to find any warning in them. But when he couldn’t find any his spirits didn’t seem to lift any.
“Well, it’s a pretty small space. I’d imagine it’s easy to run into each other,” He gave a pointed look to Jaime, a stiff smile taking over his face. “We’ll just have to keep out a better watch won’t we?”
Benny turned back to you, a more pleasant look coming over him now. “I just wanted to let you know the matches are starting soon.”
You adjusted the strap of your camera bag and turned to Jaime. “I’ll see you later then?”
His ears seemed to perk up at the idea. “Sure! I’ll see you.”
You walked over to Benny, who immediately placed his arm over your shoulder. “Come on, I’ll show you the best spot in the house,” He looked back at Jaime once more before leading you further away from him.
*
Benny looked passed his opponent, trying to find you in the growing crowd as he waited to make his next move. He leaned back in his chair, arms folding over each other and his lip twitching upward when he noticed you snapping photos of another match.
It was short lived though when he also noticed that Jaime guy hanging out not too close to you. He recalled seeing him at a few other tournaments and figured he was a friend of one of the other chess guys. But now it felt like every time he looked up he had inched closer to where you were standing.
Benny was so caught up trying to keep up with the two of you he almost missed it when his opponent finally moved.
He had the poor guy in check three moves later.
*
Benny sat in one of the armchairs in the lobby, the post tournament chatter buzzing around over his eyes and falling in and out of ears. He was in an oddly somber mood despite winning the whole thing, he usually energy for bravado now a bit depleted.
He shook hands with his final opponent and turned around, fully expecting you to be waiting to congratulated like you always did. But you were nowhere in sight.
His one heel tapped against the floor, not wanting to leave until he knew where you were. He placed his chin in hand, exhaling dramatically when he thought you might be with Jaime.
You and him always got together after his matches so he could talk your ear off about strategy and you’d tell him about the kinds of photos you’d gotten or how difficult it was to “get the right lighting”.
He smiled when thinking at your silly antics and when he remembered you weren’t here with now it put him back in a bad mood.
His eyes were trained on the floor and when he saw you walking up to him he immediately sat up straighter in his chair.
“Well there you are,” He chided, trying to cover his former disappointment. “I thought you might’ve run out on me.”
You laughed, “Like I’d ever hear the end of it if I even thought about it.”
Benny watched you put your camera away and fasten the straps on your bag and tried not to seem too eager about wanting to leave. “So, are we off? I can drive ya.”
You shook your head, “I’m actually gonna stick around a little longer. The fellow from earlier? We got to talking about some camera stuff during the downtime between matches and offered to grab drinks to talk about it more later.”
You suddenly caught yourself and you looked at him with a sheepish smile. “That’s alright isn’t it? I know we usually do something together when your matches are over.”
Benny scoffed, knowing he really had no right to tell you to leave with him, even if he wanted to. “Course it is, I’m sure he’ll make better conversation on the subject than I can.” He said with a smile.
You grinned, ruffling his hair with your hand. “Congratulations though, I heard you were especially tough to beat today. Even I was impressed.”
Benny leaned back, his smile turning a little more genuine when he heard your praise, his wounded ego healing itself already. “What can I say? I was feeling motivated today.”
You laughed, placing your hands into your pockets. “Well, I shouldn’t keep him waiting, don’t wanna be out too late.”
Benny turned his head and saw Jaime shifting his weight between his legs over by the lobby door. His eyes kept flittering over to the two of you talking.
Benny smirked before looking back up at you.
“Hey wait, you have something,” He pointed to the top of his head and you ran your fingers through your hair hoping to get it. Instead, he shook his head and laughed. “Nope, still there.”
You were about to ask him what the hell he was talking about. Instead, you felt him tug on your camera strap, the pressure making you lean forward so you more on his level where he was sitting.
Your noses almost bumped into each other, but you pulled back to prevent it. Benny lifted his hand up again, taking whatever was in your in your hair and flicking it away before you got a good look at it. Then, he lightly tucked the hair at the front of your head behind your ear.
“That’s better.” He commented, still using his free hand to hold onto your camera strap so you couldn’t get too far away from him.
Your brows furrowed at his odd behavior, and you laughed at the sudden realization of how close you two were. “You’re being strange…stranger than usual anyways.”
Benny chuckled, releasing his old on you but not without making direct eye contact with your new friend before he did. He sent a wink his way and had to hold back a laugh when he saw Jaime’s shoulders tense.
“I’ll see you later?” He asked, watching you grab your bag. “Tell your friend I said hello.”

Let's Talk About NatsuMikan: Natsume (pt.7)
Well, Natsume's really in it now! Today we'll be talking about what lengths Natsume will go to in order to protect the people he loves. He's not a normal boy with a normal first crush, after all. He has no intention of wooing her or flirting. In fact, his instinct is to distance himself, and going forward we'll see that instinct is motivated by more than just a low self-esteem.
Tumblr media
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Natsume has some major character flaws. He’s kinda a jerk in general and is rude and abrasive. He’s chronically selfless and seems to be drawn to situations where he can sacrifice himself for others, which is a very unhealthy way to be. He’s also terrible at keeping his word.
Natsume only made this decision on his own, but he’s pretty bad at carrying through with it. He’s the one who told her to stay away, but Natsume will have more and more trouble staying true to such an agreement.
At first, he makes an effort: Mikan is being bullied for her stupidity and sees Natsume. He glares at her, another discouragement from coming any closer. He doesn’t argue with her or join in on the bullying.
But in no time at all, the whole class is riled up in study mode because of Mikan’s example, and for many kids in Class B, the best person to turn to for tutoring help is Natsume, who is actually quite smart when he actually does the work--though he’d prefer not to. And he does help, though not with any kind or supportive words. He’ll leave that to Mikan. Maybe to him it feels a bit like a cheat, like he can afford to give in a little bit. He later walks alongside her after an exam, like he’s part of her circle, and although he’s not really engaging with her like the rest of the kids are, it’s enough that he’s near her.
And it’s enough for the ESP and Persona to notice.
We can see the ESP looking down on them from his headquarters room, still covered in shadows to maintain his mystery, but his figure is familiar enough for a reread. Natsume has been caught and he will have to face the consequences.
Persona subs in for Makihara-sensei (and we must wonder if Makihara was really unable to proctor his exam or if he was ordered to stay away so that a point could be made to Natsume), and despite his disguise, Natsume can tell it’s him instantly. After all, he was supposed to recognize him. Natsume looks horrified.
So far, Natsume has had to more or less balance two very different parts of his life: a more light-hearted life in Class B and his life as a spy and black ops agent. They’ve been difficult to juggle because of how different they are, but they’ve been pretty separated. Here, the lines are blurring. Was there really any divide at all or was that just an illusion? Persona can invade on his happiness any time he wants, on a whim, and nobody else will notice that anything is amiss. Only Natsume will be bothered, and that’s enough.
Natsume later catches up to Persona, asking him what the hell all that was about.
Permy and his fans aren’t the only ones to notice that Natsume has been softer lately--he and the ESP have noticed as well, and he’s been ordered to put a stop to it. He mentions a “kitten of a different color” who has been of interest to the ESP too, and Natsume plays dumb, his last-ditch attempt to protect Mikan from being drawn into this.
Persona comments on the strangeness of seeing the infamous Black Cat that he trained himself, who he’s supposedly only ever seen in action, sitting and taking a test like a normal kid. He reminds him that he’s not a normal kid. There’s no point in trying so hard. He won’t make it to ever see his family again, so why even bother?
And then Persona makes a point to discourage Natsume from getting close to that “kitten of a different color”. Natsume argues that they’re the ones who made them partners in the first place! And he might as well be giving himself away. Again, Natsume seems convinced that the partners thing was a decision from pretty high up, but I don’t think it was. Here, it seems like Persona is trying to clean up the mess Narumi made before it gets too out of hand. Natsume is a perfect tool and anything messing with that is inconvenient. They can’t unmake them partners (yet) so the most they can do is threaten Natsume.
Tumblr media
And now we can see what kind of alice Persona has. It's a real threat, killing that plant. It's a reminder to Natsume what he's capable of, that his friends and loved ones could end up just like that plant.
And so Persona does.
Natsume is anguished here, because he’s been trying his very best to avoid this situation, but he should have known that Mikan was already in the academy spotlight and his feelings would be quickly caught. It was too late from the start and he was doomed all along to add Mikan to the list of people he will do anything to protect.
Chapter Twenty-Eight
The next chapter opens with Mikan being confused and hurt by Natsume’s sudden new coldness. She has no idea what’s brought this all on, but we do. Natsume has no choice now but to completely try and cut her off. It’s for her own good, after all. If he’s not careful, she could get hurt. Protecting her is worth it, even if it means he has to be even more of a villain than usual.
We don’t see a lot of Natsume in this chapter, actually, because he’s trying really hard to stick by his word this time. We see him trip up a little, staring at her in class. When she catches him, he turns away coldly, but from this we can see that Natsume really doesn’t want to be leaving her alone like this. If he had it his way, in an ideal world, he’d be much nicer to her. Unfortunately, Natsume doesn’t waste his time thinking about his ideals, so he keeps at it, pushing her away.
The next time we see Natsume, it’s after we’ve been thoroughly introduced to the concept of the life-shortening alice. This is one hint of many that he has such an alice, several chapters before we get a real confirmation.
The scene where Natsume struggles on a bed full of pills is perhaps more dramatic in the anime, but it’s no less potent here. It’s like a sucker punch. You don’t want it to be true. He’s ten years old, for heaven’s sake! TEN YEARS OLD! And he’s suffering, hunched over, face red, gasping for air, clutching his chest, next to the biggest bag of medicine I’ve ever seen. It’s the biggest hint we’ve gotten so far, especially in the context of Kaname’s illness.
Tumblr media
It's heart-breaking to imagine that most of the time, Natsume is simply pretending like he's not in absolute physical agony.
Kaname stays at the hospital for long stretches of time, staying for weeks and sometimes months at a time. He’s hospitalized more than he’s able to walk around free. There’s a lot to consider when that treatment is compared to Natsume’s. Natsume is the DA favorite and is sent on many missions. His trips to the hospital are never for weeks or months at a time, not because he doesn’t need the rest, but because the school can’t stand to go so long without their prize fighter. Natsume might be in even worse condition than Kaname, but there’d be no real way to tell unless we got it from him, because he has no choice but to put up with it and pretend like he’s not living in constant agony. And on top of being terribly and terminally ill, he gets physically beaten somewhat regularly… this school beats sick children and then threatens them when they find any inkling of happiness.
There is a bittersweet tone about Kaname’s story. He’s already sick anyway but he will probably die if he keeps using his alice, but he wants to, because he wants to bring people the same happiness that making Bear brought him. It’s tragic and heart-breaking, but it’s touching too. That sweetness is missing from Natsume’s appearance. His situation feels miserable and helpless in comparison, because not only does he have no way out, but nobody even knows the extent of his struggles.
He only lets himself feel this level of pain when he’s all alone in his bedroom. He’s been having a horrible past few days, having to ignore Mikan when she’s all that’s made him happy in recent memory. All that together, and we know that this night was a rough one for him.
The next day, we see everyone saying good-bye to Kaname. Once again, Natsume is completely separated from the rest of them, all alone in the classroom, sitting and looking as miserable as one can expect. It’s strange seeing him now after we’ve seen what his nights look like and just how painful they can get.
Tumblr media
I just want him to be okay. Why is that too much to ask?
There’s some text on his panel: “I want the future I spend with the ones I love to last just a little longer.” Yet another hint that maybe his illness is more than just that. He has very little time left, and very little time to spend with his loved ones, but even worse: he can’t even spend time with Mikan because doing so would put her in danger. Even with Youichi and Ruka the amount of time he can spend with them is limited. They have their own lives and he doesn’t want to hold them back or hint in the slightest that there’s something up with him. He doesn’t want to worry or burden them. And so he sits alone in the classroom, looking despondent and lonely.
And now we know more than ever that this was never his choice: he has to be like this.
No, he’s not the asshole he makes himself out to be, somebody who doesn’t care about others and cuts others off because he thinks himself above them. All he wants is to protect people from getting too entrenched in his dark life. Natsume being this level of a jerk is a method to protect people, a method an adult would have to take.
Chapter Twenty-Nine
I’m quite relieved to have finally passed the point where the anime adapts the manga. From now on, I can focus entirely on the manga. I passed 22k words on this essay too! This whole thing will be sooooo long. I hope it’s an enjoyable read so far. It’s quite fun for me to write.
This chapter is the beginning of a long and dramatic arc. There’s been incidents of people losing their alices. The academy is withholding information about the gravity of the situation, lying that the students have not been affected so far.
But even with the little information the kids have, Class B is full of concern. Everyone is discussing these incidents, debating whether losing one’s alice would even be a bad thing. After all, they’d be able to go back home and see their families. Nonoko brings up a great point, that her alice is a part of her identity, something she loves about herself. It’s not something she’d ever willingly part with. Furthermore, she doesn’t want to leave all her friends at the academy either. Ultimately, the kids all agree that they wouldn’t want to lose their alices.
At this, Natsume stands up and leaves the room. He’s heard enough.
Natsume doesn’t just have complicated feelings about his alice--he feels hatred for it. After all, if it weren’t for his alice, he could live to a ripe old age. He could still be with his family. He could be happy, not used as a weapon by the academy to fight until he dies. He can’t relate much to the conversations about fondness for an alice. From what we can see, he’d be over the moon to be rid of it for good. This is a concept brought up now, because it will be incredibly important later on.
Not to spill about my personal life or anything, but I’m an English major (in an anglophone country so my focus is literary analysis and writing). Writing literature papers in school was a love of mine that I translated to my other interests. I’m writing what I can here about general themes and even visual parallels. I want to write as thorough an analysis as I can. Unfortunately, I can’t effectively pick apart word choices and phrases when they’re translated from another language and when so many conflicting translations may exist.
I’m saying all this as a disclaimer because I want to analyze word choice now and I am aware that this might not carry to the original Japanese or even to other versions of the English translation. (For reference, I’m using the TokyoPop versions for my analysis for the first 15 volumes and then I’ll be using whatever I get my hands on for the rest. The pics I use are from scans, but the main source I use for now is TokyoPop.)
Tumblr media
"Nowhere!".... hmm let me read way too much into this.
Natsume leaves the room and Ruka chases after him, asking where he’s headed. Natsume responds, “Nowhere.” This might be a nothing point to make, but it stands out to me whenever I read this part. It’s a reassurance to Ruka, sure, but there seems to be more to it. On the surface, we can tell that Natsume doesn’t have a destination in mind; he just doesn’t want to be in the classroom anymore, listening to all that upsetting talk. Deeper than that, he really is heading nowhere. He’s stuck there, at the academy, unlike the rest of them who will eventually leave to go back home once they’ve graduated. Natsume will probably die at the school, trapped within its gates. He will probably never see his family again. He is, in that sense as well, going nowhere.
The rest of their conversation is just as packed with meaning. Ruka can tell something is up and he wants Natsume to talk to him, to let him in, but Natsume knows that Ruka has made a pact not to smile if he’s not smiling. So even though Ruka is asking and wants to know what’s wrong, Natsume won’t give anything away. Being miserable is one thing, but letting Ruka know that something is worse than usual would only make Ruka miserable too, and he can’t have that. The bottom of one page has him frowning, maybe steeling himself, and then at the top of the next page, he turns around with a grin to tousle Ruka’s hair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don't mind me. I am simply crying.
“It’s nothing,” he says with his smile, looking so gentle, and Ruka still looks concerned, but he can’t argue anymore.
In reality there’s a lot going on with Natsume. Later, when we are introduced to Tono, he mentions being concerned about Natsume’s health, having heard that he was making frequent visits to the hospital. We already know he’s sick and going on ceaseless missions, and on top of all that he has to ignore and be cruel to the girl he likes. It’s a terrible situation. But Natsume can’t tell Ruka any of this without worrying him, so instead he will keep it to himself. After all, it’s nothing that can be helped or changed. It’s something he feels he has to cope with on his own. To him, spilling his secrets would be selfish and only cause suffering.
Chapter Thirty
Iinchou has finally returned from his visit to his hometown. He’s brought gifts and anecdotes and everyone is quite happy to see him, until Iinchou attempts to use his alice and finds himself unable to.
It’s a shock to the whole class that a kid at their school has lost his alice. They had been so relieved that at least it wouldn’t affect kids like them, but now one of them is a victim too. It makes the fear much more real. If it could happen to Iinchou, it could happen to any of them.
Things get tense when Iinchou returns to class and says that this might have been the fault of a woman he encountered outside of the school, someone who was probably affiliated with Z. Everyone who was involved with saving Natsume when he was kidnapped is shocked to hear about Z again, but none more than Natsume himself. He gets up and leaves, just like he did last chapter.
He’s thinking about the proposal Reo gave, that Natsume should join Z and fight against the academy he despises. But he’s not alone with his thoughts, because Ruka followed him again, and so did Mikan this time.
She tries to ask him about Z, see if he has any more idea about what’s going on. She’s confused and he knows more than anyone what happened during that incident, but he’s refusing to acknowledge her presence, let alone answer any of her questions. He’s keeping up his charade of cruelty to keep her safe, but it’s driving Mikan crazy. She finally breaks, screaming at him that he should pay attention when people are talking to him, and further that if he has any issues with her he should just say it to her face.
Just like last chapter, we see a panel of Natsume steeling himself, ready to do the selfless thing to protect the other person. Only this time the next panel has him glaring at her, saying he doesn’t like anything about her. He hates everything about her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Natsume has no choice but to lie all the time about how he's feeling, because everyone else must always come first.
It feels different, but in reality this is the same thing he did to Ruka last chapter. He can’t be honest about his feelings when he’s feeling upset, and he can’t be honest about his feelings when he’s actually starting to fall for a girl. He always has to hide his true feelings, repress and bury them, lie about them in order to protect everyone around him. It’s hard for him to do, but he thinks it hurts him more than it could hurt her, so he manages it.
What adds even more layers to this is that Ruka is observing the whole thing. He sees Natsume’s actions as selfless but misfires on the motive a little--but only a little.
He recalls eating strawberries with Natsume and Aoi, with Aoi cheerfully discussing her newfound love for the fruits. And so Natsume gives his to her. Aoi is surprised, because strawberries are his favorites. He responds easily, “I hate them now.”
Tumblr media
"For you," Natsume says.
Ruka knows what kind of person Natsume is, that Natsume would reject something he loves so that his loved ones can be happy. They’re both aware that they like the same girl, and Ruka can’t help but put the math together and assume that perhaps Natsume is doing this for him, hurting himself and bringing himself pain so that Ruka can be happy and pursue a girl he has a crush on guilt-free.
He’s even more convinced of the theory with the tiny panel that reminds us of when Natsume shoved Ruka into Mikan so they could dance. Natsume loves Mikan too, but he wants Ruka to be happy, so he will give up and even ruin his own chances to help out his best friend over himself.
When I say it’s a misfire, I mean that Natsume has a lot of other things going on, including Persona and his imminent death. It’s not that he definitely isn’t doing this for Ruka, it’s just that it’s not as major a factor as other things. He’s mainly doing it because of the threats from Persona. If Ruka is involved in his thought process, it’s mainly a bonus. Ruka’s theory is definitely not unfounded; just not completely accurate.
In any case, it does add extra substance to the dynamic between the three of them, where they all walk away from the moment with completely different kinds of misery.
Before any of them can sit with their sadness, though, they receive word that an intruder from Z is at the school.
Conclusion
In this section, we explored how Natsume has no choice but to distance himself from everybody, and even how the methods he uses to distance himself look different depending on the person. Ultimately, despite the fact that he isn't the sweetest kid you'll ever meet, Natsume being cruel to this extent isn't a quirk of his personality: it's what he has to do. If he didn't have so many things being held against him, he might be much kinder to Mikan, or more honest with Ruka, but he has no choice in the matter.
In the next edition, we're getting more involved in the Z Arc and going into how come Natsume goes from telling Mikan he hates her to backing her cause and going on a dangerous mission with her.

Note
sorry if it too much but loki from thor for the abc thing please 🌷
Tumblr media
[Thank you so much for helping me celebrate! I hope that you enjoy, and that it was what you were wanting!]
A = Aftercare (what they’re like after sex)
Loki can come off as inconsiderate to some, but never to you. He will fully take care of you, bathing you in the finest soaps, getting the best wine and feast imaginable. Anything you need he is right there ready to be tended to.
B = Body part (their favorite body part of theirs and also their partner’s)
Favorite part of his: His tongue, let’s be real he is known as the silver tongued God for reasons other than his ability to lie his way out of any situation. Able to put it to good use making you fall apart over and over again.
Favorite part of yours: Your neck/throat, whether he is kissing or sucking on it, or wrapping his hands around it gently squeezing. It’s an incredibly intimate thing for him to be trusted by you with such vulnerabilities.
C = Cum (anything to do with cum, basically)
He is a God who desperately wants an heir at some point, so likely it will always be inside of you. Even if you have a problem with it he will talk you into it, which he is incredibly good at.
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
Really enjoys multiplying himself and having all of them pleasure you at once, including but not limited to double penetration. Truthfully it’s the only other way that you would have multiple partners as Loki doesn’t share.
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)
He is incredibly old, so he has an immense amount of experience, all the better to make you fall apart with. Definitely knows what he is doing, sometimes to an extreme, wanting to try new and potentially dangerous things.
F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)
Cowgirl, sitting on his cock as he thrusts up into you with a brutal pace sure to make you cum until you can’t anymore. Grasping your hips in a bruising fashion, using them as leverage to pull you down on him at the same time.
G = Goofy (are they more serious in the moment? are they humorous? etc.)
Most of the time he is pretty serious, but he also has lighthearted moments where the two of you can’t help but laugh or giggle at the situation.
H = Hair (how well groomed are they? does the carpet match the drapes? etc.)
Impeccably groomed down there, trimmed neatly, not a hair out of place. While the hair on his head is lengthy, it would not translate to his manscaping.
I = Intimacy (how are they during the moment? the romantic aspect)
Incredibly intimate, even in your most lustful of love making sessions. Always telling you how much he loves you, and how lucky he is that you allow him this part of you. It’s the time where he can be honest with you, and not have to worry about what anyone else might think.
J = Jack off (masturbation headcanon)
Occasionally, when you are too tired, or aren’t in the mood for whatever reason. It’s more of when the moment strikes him and he doesn’t have you to fulfill his needs kind of thing.
K = Kink (one or more of their kinks)
Voyeurism, in the way of having sex places where you can and usually do get caught by whoever is nearby. Sometimes it's his brother, other times it's a servant, or party guest depending on the occasion.
L = Location (favorite places to do the do)
In the garden of the palace, somewhat closed off and private, but still the threat of getting caught will always be there. Besides the view of the flowers, their scents add to the sensory overload that he provides every time you are together.
M = Motivation (what turns them on, gets them going)
Whenever you try to defy something that he says, or prove him wrong on something that he has told you. For some reason you standing up to him turns him on like nothing ever has before, enjoying your defiance immensely.
N = No (something they wouldn’t do, turn offs)
I don’t think there is anything that he wouldn’t at least try with you, unless you were not interested at all. Then he would definitely not suggest it, wanting you to be comfortable at all times.
O = Oral (preference in giving or receiving, skill, etc.)
Again Silver Tongued God ™ he will use that tongue to bring you to orgasm, making you count each and every one until you are unbearably overstimulated. Of course he would never turn you down if you offer to return the favor. Possibly also using it for punishment if you get out of line in his mind.
P = Pace (are they fast and rough? slow and sensual? etc.)
I would say it’s about 50/50, it really just depends on the mood, and the amount of time that the two of you have to get away. If you have all night he will start off sensual and slow, wanting to take his sweet time with you. If you have to engage in a quickie, or are particularly into the act then it will be rough and fast, banging your brains out until you can’t think clearly anymore.
Q = Quickie (their opinions on quickies, how often, etc.)
Loki prefers to take his time, but if there isn’t an option he will take a quickie. Not to mention that your public forays tend to be quick as the mood typically gets squashed if caught by the wrong people.
R = Risk (are they game to experiment? do they take risks? etc.)
No risk, no reward is his motto. Always ready to do something outlandish, or try something dangerous, within reason of course. He would never put your life at risk.
S = Stamina (how many rounds can they go for? how long do they last?)
Being a God, he has endless stamina. Able to go for literal days if you could, but he knows that isn’t realistic. So he relies on your communication to know when you have had enough, happy to just hold you close to him after.
T = Toys (do they own toys? do they use them? on a partner or themselves?)
Probably doesn’t really know about sexual toys, but once you introduce them to him… he is all in baby! Wants to use them on you, on himself, use them together. Astounded that Midgard has so many things to aid in sexual pleasure.
U = Unfair (how much they like to tease)
The ultimate tease, let’s be real here! Always flirting with someone to make you jealous, gender notwithstanding. Enjoy’s it very much when you try to get him back by doing the same, teasing him, making him want more. Leading to some intense fucking that night, the bed may even break...
V = Volume (how loud they are, what sounds they make, etc.)
Doesn’t really make noises per say, but he will be talking pretty much the entire time. Telling you what he wants you to do, dirty talk, praising talk, discipline, you name it and it will be coming out of his mouth.
W = Wild card (a random headcanon for the character)
Really enjoys using his abilities to cause sensory deprivation to you, causing your sight to go dark, “tying” you to the bed frame, and touching you with your heightened awareness.
X = X-ray (let’s see what’s going on under those clothes)
Honestly he can make it look however you want him to, but his actual member is satisfying on it’s own. Long, slightly above average thickness, and 100% able to use it.
Y = Yearning (how high is their sex drive?)
Surprisingly it’s pretty normal, nothing over the top, a few times a week, or whenever you are in the mood. Don’t worry if you want it he will rise to attention ;)
Z = Zzz (how quickly they fall asleep afterwards)
Only falls asleep once you are comfortable and drifting off in his arms. Would need to make sure that you are taken care of first before he could even think about falling asleep himself.

Kamen Rider.
The original show that started an ever-expanding series of stories; an icon so popular and beloved across Japan; a show that struck such a chord with audiences that it ultimately went on for 98 episodes, the longest a single full-length Tokusatsu show has ever run for.
A show about love, and fighting fascism wherever it may try to harm the human life that is so inherently important and sacred, and the tragedy of being distanced from the very humanity you cherish and fight to protect.
Can I say it fully lives up to that description? ... Not honestly, no. If someone were to come in blindly and say “hey I heard this is a pretty anti-fascist show, do you think I should watch it??”, I couldn’t genuinely recommend more than a handful of episodes and then to just say ‘go read the manga’. I think too often the fandom will elevate the original show so highly as to avoid stating the obvious and what may disappoint a lot of viewers going into it -- all these ideals are indeed there, but it’s through the lens of a 1971 kid’s TV show; one that had to dumb down those elements in order to fit the confines of the time. Furthermore, it is one that exploded in popularity; causing many extensions of the show that had the showrunners constantly coming up with new ideas to revitalise it in a way that was exciting, but not necessarily completely true to its values -- watching a large chunk of the Rider #2 or Ambassador Hell eras will lay that pretty bare. Surprise surprise, the most popular enduring superhero TV icon is not exactly a comprehensive diatribe on the dangers of fascism and the trauma it inflicts!
But that perhaps makes it all the more impressive for what it is able to do? I have gone on at length so many times about how incredible it is that Kamen Rider’s origin comes down to a man fighting a lone battle against fascism; against the organisation that stripped him of his humanity; about a monster who decided to be good fighting against what is essentially his own kind or those stuck in the same situation. And while that backstory isn’t exactly elaborated on a lot past the first 13 episodes, it’s still there! It is, in fact, repeated every single episode at the end of the opening credits! So even when the show is being a lot more generic and used as a sort of depository for whatever monster plot would seem scary or impressive this week, this tragedy still feels present and a part of what drives Kamen Rider’s fight, to me. This is what Goranger was missing for me -- a real message, a real thing the creators were passionate about and wanted to say, no matter how buried or ignored; still shining through the seams. Hongou and Ichimonji’s backstory; the secrecy yet reach of Shocker as a terrifying fascist organisation; the constant kidnapping and remodelling of normal people living in society; the fact that at one point the show had a goddamn Nazi in an eyepatch as the main villain! I can’t claim to know everything Ishinomori was thinking of when he originally wrote Kamen Rider or everything that inspired him, I would feel like a disingenuous liar to claim any motivations; but it all feels like such a real drive someone deeply effected or horrified by these things would want to reach out and warn about and talk about.
In my opinion, there are two stretches of the show that stand out to me more than any other; and if anyone was asking for a condensed idea of what Kamen Rider stands for or just a good idea of the show would be the two stretches (alongside a few other individual episodes) I would personally recommend: the first 15 episodes, and the final fifth of the show from 80-98 that introduces the threat of Gel-Shocker.
Of those first 15 episodes, the first 13 are Kamen Rider at its most absolute raw and truest state. It’s also one where it feels like no-one really knew how to tell a story or make a show -- any criticism you could lobby at Showa Rider about how it lacks subtlety or doesn’t know how to show instead of tell or how the suits don’t feel well-constructed are ramped up to not just 11 but probably, like, 21 or 31 or 1001; it is a pretty hastily constructed thing of a show... but it just makes the passion scream LOUDER. It’s almost like a personal project, something that someone makes at school! This is Shocker at its most threatening and overbearing and Kamen Rider at his most desperate; the story at its most scrambled yet focused. Every line of dialogue leads nothing to the imagination; you are told exactly what is going on and what characters are thinking and feeling with little room for interpretation and janky, lumbering steps into each development. And it’s what most highlights the narrative of what Kamen Rider was made to say? When Ishinomori was finally able to make his manga adaption which goes in a wildly different direction to the show in order to truly say what he wanted, he adapts these first 13 episodes more or less verbatim and I think that says more than I ever could on the subject. As for episode 14 and 15, these are the first episodes of Hayato Ichimonji; Rider #2 and the first in a new era of a show. I’m not the biggest fan of the period this leads into, but the original 2-parter is a very fun time with a lingering sense of desperation to it that also shows for the first time the scale of Shocker’s operations around the world. All in all, the first 15 episodes of Kamen Rider slowly drew me into the show and captured my heart in a way that few Showa Toku have been able to do.
The other period of the show I recommend is Episode 80 onwards -- in other words, the dawn of Gel-Shocker. Up until this point Kamen Rider had slowly but surely devolved into being a pretty basic show; with Shocker in particular going pretty over-the-top with their MOTW plots involving whatever the writers could think of first and wild characters like Ambassador Hell at the helm (he’s seemingly well-remembered but VERY stupid and goofy. It makes him a joy to watch, mind!). I was still enjoying it and was still very much ready to consider it a show I had a lot of love for, and one where the ideals as I said still shone through the darkness; but overall something that wasn’t the best. And then, after a couple ominous allusions to the future; Shocker announces its partnership to Geldam and Gel-Shocker is born. And very much instantly Kamen Rider goes back to its roots in how threatening and dangerous the people Kamen Rider is fighting are; with a far more serious general, plots that seek to strike deep into the heart of Kamen Rider’s life and friends, the downright brutal destruction and killing of every trace of the old Shocker; and a newly refound focus of its infiltration into society and the lives it can ruin. A few episodes aside which still resembled the old show it is very much the Kamen Rider I had heard about and the type of fascist organisation I thought of when I see its reimaginings over the years; and only 10 episodes in begins a tense serialised arc of Kamen Rider having everything stripped away from him as Gel-Shocker not only focuses their efforts on his allies, but introduces the Shocker Riders as a threat beyond anything else that brings excitement beyond anything I’ve seen in this era of television for Tokusatsu. It ultimately all culminates in the final episode, where Great Leader is finally brought to his knees and ends in a sad, suicidal attempt to take out his enemies when everything else has failed; showing how for all his mystery and power, that’s what he amounts to.
There is so much more I could say. There’s so much more I could say about what this original chapter of Kamen Rider means to me on a deeper spiritual level; about the love and respect for life inherent to it; about so many amazing lines like the infamous “Human Life is more important than Peace and Justice”; heck, even about how future movies like Let’s Go Kamen Riders or Kamen Rider 1 make wonderful companion pieces to it and make me love it even more -- but not because of what they add, but because of how they expand on what was there all along. But this piece has already gone on for so long, and I’ve got plenty of nights left in my life to talk about it. Ultimately, it’s a show that’s left with me with so much and has become more important to me than I could imagine.
Thank you, Kamen Rider.

Now that I have time and some motivation let's get down to business.
Paz also has tattoos for you,
One of your name in mando'a,
Second of the star constellation that you spotted on your trip, we love our wiccan king,
He'd 10000% be the guy to get his child's birth date tattooed,
Paz posting his precious doggo on instagram?,
Oh or Paz starting a culinary YouTube channel???,
And also showing his of the grid lifestyle?,
showing his animal rescue and promoting adoptions!,
He is buffy, handsome, funny, loves children and animals, dresses good and is the best chef, so there are many fanboys and fangirls in his comments thirsting over him,
When the comments asking if he is single get too overwhelming, he asks you to tune in for some vlogs,
You'd definitely film a mukbang video!!,
And also these crazy spicy noodle challenges,
Boba accidentally disliking all of Paz' videos?? (we are still onto tech-grandpa Boba? 😂),
You have to make sure that he doesn't post any pictures done by his hand,
He'd retweet funny clips of cats and cute pictures from Jango Investigation company's official profile,
Also him leaving embarrassing comments on your profile?
Or not knowing that there is function to dm you on instagram,
So he comments on your recent holiday trip picture ''you looked good in this swimsuit princess, shame on me I tore it apart'' or ''looking tempting babygirl, be ready, sir will be home soon'',
Din doesn't really care for sm?,
Like he used to be a casual user,
But one day people were flooding his comments and dms, spamming him with @pascalisapunk,
He noticed that you were watching youtube kids with Grogu,
(oh now I hope you will know what is going on) Grogu really likes watching cocomelon,
So Din tricked him to watching PewDiePie instead,
You don't like it tho, thinking these videos are too edgy and stupid for both of them,
''Din you've watched too many of these videos and you became a brain-rotten himbo I don't want the same to happen to our son!'',
Din and Grogu playing Minecraft together? 🥺,
Also Paz has the best town in Animal crossing for sure!,
Surprise, surprise Boba actually likes and knows how to(!!!) play Mafia game (well it's from 2002 so maybe that's why lol),
But he is the king of board games,
Especially Monopoly!!!
Also not to mention cars games,
He made you play strip poker with him 😳,
Paz and you doing a baby shower at his restaurant!!,
Imagine big daddy bear Paz with a little babygirl 😍😍😍, (Bummer that we don't have an official name for the Armorer, could be honored by Paz naming his baby after her 😭),
Grogu telling his friends at school that his daddy is also an actor lol,
Few days later bunch of 5 year olds are asking him if this is the way to the restroom, if he can bring in some hot chocolate, and doing the baby yoda batuu sound at him lol,
Poor Din, but he secretly loves it, he just loves children,
So imagine his combustion when you tell him that you are having a little Djarin 😍,
Paz helping with babyshower??,
And Boba is totally on buying you a new, bigger apartment as a gift lol,
''What, Djarin? Can't have my little nephew and favorite sister-in-law who is pregnant living in your excuse of an apartament'' lol Boba has no chill,
Grogu gets addicted to bubble tea,
And it isn't because of your introduction, you knew better not to let him drink too often,
But everyday, after coming back from the kindergarten Din and Grogu would stop by your favorite bubble tea shop,
Grogu totally wants a little brother!,
And Din is thinking about a little babygirl or better, why not both, or even better two little boys and a little girl and Grogu being their big bro 😍,
You better be ready for some intensive wrestling sessions,
You and Din have no idea why, but lately, he seems to cum A LOT MORE,
When Boba carries out the tradition you are pregnant,
Pregnant with twin boys,
And the look identical, like they were literally cloned 😉,
Boba wouldn't throw a huge babyshower,
He is too afraid after the incident involving you and the rival syndicate,
Actually Boba decided that you should move from the downtown, to live in a more low-key area,
So you are now living in a palace 😉 in the suburbs
Boba gets you a private driver and a bodyguard,
But most of the time he tries to drive you to work since you both have offices in the downtown area,
Your daily commute can get really pleasurable for both of you 😳,
Boba has his own shooting range lol, king of extra right?
One day when you were babysitting Grogu at your place you found out that Boba was teaching the kid about shooting,
You were furious,
''C'mon princess, haven't I told you about me and my father? He showed me how to use a gun when I was even younger than Grogu'',
Srsly, this man,
Giving him a death glare you take Grogu and treat him for some bubble tea
-🐣
Oh yeeesss let's get to business....
Paz's tattoos 😭😭😭 so cute (kind of reminds me of my dad, he has all of our names)
Paz totally has an Instagram dedicated to Ad'ika
Paz being thirsted after on his YouTube is so cute
But his followers also really ship the two of you, because you both are just couple goals
Paz makes you the cutest anniversary video and posts it to his YouTube
Paz is a total gamer, he absolutely loves Animal Crossing and he makes a whole section of his town dedicated to you
Paz throws the absolute cutest baby shower and anyone and everyone is invited
You both decide to wait until after the baby is born to find out the gender, and Paz has a raffle going on at the restaurant where people can guess the gender
Armorer = Amira? Amara? Andromeda??
He makes you both cute matching sweaters for your characters
Paz is the one that introduced Grogu to minecraft
Boba cause so much havoc on social media
He totally is leaving thirst comments under your pictures on Instagram not realizing everyone else can see them too
You have a Instagram set up for Fennec too because she is just so photogenic, at least when you take the pictures
I think Boba is actually pretty proficient at using Twitter, and its more or less because he uses it to stalk people 9/10
You have a tumblr where you tease and make fun of Boba, mostly posting quotes or the silly pictures that Boba takes
Boba totally dominates at any board game, but especially Monopoly
That game of strip poker did not last long at all, and you think Boba quite literally was hiding aces up his sleeves
Boba makes sure you are always thoroughly satisfied before he drops you off at work every morning
When Boba finds out you're pregnant he celebrates, and its huge
He starts going all out buying anything and everything he can/wants
When he finds out its twin boys he is over the moon
Names for the boys, Jango and Jaster? Rex and Cody??
Boba totally buys some big house outside of town, that has anything and everything you could ever ask for
It also has a panic room and state of the art safety because Boba isn't taking chances with you or the boys
Also, bringing the babysitting saga to the modern au 😭😭
You walk in on Boba handing Grogu a gun and you flip out, yelling at him
He just shrugs and you take Grogu away and say that your kids WILL N O T learn how to do any of that stuff until they are atleast teenagers
Boba pouts because you ruined his and Grogu's bonding time
When Din comes to pick up Grogu, Grogu looks him in the eye and says "cocksucker"
Din has a heart attack and Boba laughs as you yell at him asking where he heard that
Grogu says that he heard uncle Boba say it while on the phone
Din tries to follow Paz’s recipes from his YouTube, and it always turns out badly and you have to come in and save it
Din totally loves Pewdiepie's humor
Din gets frustrated with social media and ends up just making an empty account so he can follow you and watch videos, but after the whole Pedro Pascal disaster he never posts anything
Grogu and you are his profile picture though
When Grogu goes around telling the kids at school he is the mandalorian he just sighs
And when all of the kids start quoting the show, he just starts quoting them back so they will stop bothering him
When Din announced the pregnancy Paz got so excited to have another nephew/niece
Paz lets Din hold the baby shower at the restaurant and he makes all of the food, including little gender reveal cake pops
Paz gifts the two of you a photo album at has pictures of the two of you and grogu, but it is still half empty so you can add more memories of your expanding family
Boba just hands Din house keys a day says the place is paid off and he's covering the bills for the first year (he also had a nice play set built in the backyard for Grogu)

for the character headcannons ask game, jason and cass?
ALRIGHT ALRIGHT im putting this one under a cut because it got SUPER long bc i cant shut up ever
lets start w jason
A (realistic headcanon):
ok using the ‘realistic’ category here loosely but GOD i love the idea of Damian & Jason having interacted while Jason was staying with the League before getting dunked in the Lazarus Pit. like. this obviously would need to be set more in preboot and following the Lost Days & Batman Annual 25 version of Jason’s resurrection, but god the idea of it just makes me scream in a good way. Like... these are things Jason likely doesn’t remember very clearly once he’s brought back to life more fully by the pit because he was uh pretty catatonic, but Damian being a little kid and knowing about the boy that his mother keeps around the base, that she’s trying to help bring back to health. Damian not even knowing that’s his big brother, just that he’s a presence that shares his mother’s attention. Jason again being unresponsive but like, ok god you know that part of lost days where Talia shows the others observing him that he only fights back at those he perceives as genuine threats trying to hurt him,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because Jason can perceive that she’s safe, she’s not actually trying to hurt him, he trusts her because she saved him? thinking about lil child Damian who is ya know already being trained in fighting stuff and like the idea of him trying to provoke Jason just to see what happens but Jason not fighting back because on some level be it his connection to Talia or even little baby Damian visually reminding him of Bruce, he knows that Damian is safe too 🥺
and then when Jason and Damian meet again in Gotham as Red Hood & Robin respectively, Jason not really remembering because there was so much going on back then for him, but Damian realizing that oh... that was Him
B (hilarious):
alright so if we are looking at comics currently, in modern stuff jason is what, like 22? hes old enough to drink in the US but still definitely early 20s so around my around my age, thats what im using as a basis here. if we adjust timeline and still consider his death having happened when he was 15, that puts it around 2013. and then coming back to like interacting with people about three years later if we still kinda base things off of the preboot timeframe (since we never got a super solid retelling of the timeline of death -> resurrection -> training -> tries to get revenge aside from knowing he went to the all-caste instead of the lost days version of the story) making him reenter the regular world and stuff around age 18 in 2016. meaning a solid three years of pop culture that he was entirely missing, and like im sorry but he really doesn’t strike me as the type to bother looking into what he missed, he’s kinda busy focusing on other stuff. lets take a quick look at some major things from those years. 2013 gave us ‘what does the fox say’ and ‘the harlem shake’ . 2014 had that time U2 just put a fuckin album on everyone’s phones, The Fault In Our Stars movie came out. 2015 introduced the phrase ‘Netflix and Chill’ and the whole blue & black vs gold & white dress debate happened. imagine any of the other batkids (or even arguably roy during rhato stuff) bringing these things up and jason’s ensuing confusion. thank you for your time
C (heart-crushing):
so. there are two specific instances from rebirth era Jason i want to bring up here and much like a lot of these it’s less a headcanon and more of an inference based on observations, but i wanna take a sec to discuss Jason’s relationship with other people’s death. early in rebirth, Tim ‘dies’ from that whole thing in detective comics. he didn’t actually die, we as readers know, but in-universe they all very much so thought he was dead. frustratingly a lot of the batfam wasn’t really shown mourning him aside from in the Detective Comics Rebirth title itself (which just. when a major character dies even if its temporary- that should have a ripple effect) BUT an exception to that is in RHATO 2016, where we get this offhanded comment in Jason’s internal monologuing
Tumblr media
similarly later when Roy, who like, had an incredibly close relationship w Jason that had just gotten mended before Heroes in Crisis, gets fuckin murdered in that whole thing... Jason doesn’t go to his funeral either. He leaves a dramatic voice mail and then visits the grave on his own later, choosing to instead keep working on the mission they’d started rather than going and taking the time to mourn properly.
Jason’s relationship with death is incredibly complicated, obviously. He has died, he has come back, and he now is willing to cross the line most other bats won’t and will kill people when he deems it necessary. I think thats something important though- he doesn’t just like... go around killing for fun (usually, some writers preboot made him a little murder happy but even then usually this still was vaguely followed) he kills people he thinks deserved it. Like, even looking back at the mess of Morrison’s Jason during Batman & Robin 2009, Jason was still trying to bring a sense of justice with who he was killing (”punishment that fits the crime”), it wasn’t killing for the sake of killing. He sees things in this kind of almost black and white ‘people who deserve it’ and ‘people who don’t’ way, and he has no problem dealing with death when it’s with the people he thinks deserve it.
but when someone who doesn’t in his mind ‘deserve it’ gets killed? i think he just goes into total avoidance mode. throws himself into other things he’s doing, tries not to dwell on it too much no matter how much he still thinks about it (this is especially evident in him consistently telling people “i’m fine!” after what happened to Roy, despite bringing Roy up literally like every few issues for a WHILE after he died and very clearly still struggling with it, Artemis is the only one who gets through to him on it a little bit)
but yeah, I just think that from Jason’s relatively unique situation of having been murdered, he knows what it’s like and he is perfectly fine wishing that on people he thinks are bad and deserve it, but it crushes him to imagine the people he loves and cares about having to experience something as painful as what he went through. not to mention the whole “I came back, why do I get a second chance at all this when they, who are a much better person than I am, probably won’t” mindset we get some implications of him having
D (canon is a coward and won’t)
hello DC i am once again insisting a batfam member is bisexual
CASS TIME
A (realistic headcanon):
ok so we know cass likes ballet. thats canon. however i think we also should in general explore cass experiencing other types of dance/performance as well, be it herself as a performer or even just watching. like... god imagine her & like my brain just automatically for group activities puts her with tim steph and duke but also for this in particular I feel would be a Jason embraced activity, but like them going to see a broadway show or some other professional theatre or something, and her just being enthralled by the reading of body language of the performers! like again by any point in current stuff cass does have like, the ability to speak fine (reading still hard tho) but even so I think like. okay im a theatre kid if that’s not obvious from the Everything About Me but one thing I always do after seeing a show is ya know spend dinner afterwards discussing it with whoever i saw it with.
I just think that like, bringing those people i just mentioned to the table to discuss seeing a show after would be so FASCINATING because cass would bring this whole perspective of critiquing their acting on a whole different level- not based on how well they delivered lines out loud, but by what their body language was saying as they moved on stage. like im very amused by the idea of cass getting a totally different picture in her mind about what a character’s motivations were because she was paying way more attention to what their physicality was saying vs the words that were written and how they were delivered. i think the debates her and the others would have would be EPIC there. jason defending the text as it was written adamantly and cass being like ‘ok yeah sure but thats not what they did’
B (hilarious):
cass having no concept of money because why would she bother? is SO funny to me. like it’s not that she couldn’t be reasonable if she wanted to, but like, she knows that the Waynes are well off so it’s not something she actually needs to be concerned about, so she just goes hog wild. takes steph out to fancy dinners and makes steph order for them since cass ya know doesn’t really read the menus, and steph’s like ‘jesus christ this costs-” “don’t worry about it” “but cass-” and she just holds up one of bruce’s credit cards and steph’s still like “but you don’t even know the range-” “it is fine”
bruce does not have the heart to tell her to stop
C (heart-crushing):
i mean this is pretty much canon but especially now after death metal where she’s remembering, not just being told by a guy using weird alternate timeline technology, that she used to be an adopted member of the Wayne family... like that hurts so bad. To look at these people who have ya know been kind to her, Bruce has still been a father-like figure to her (i mean literally from the moment they met in New 52 canon during the flashback in Batman & Robin Eternal, where he’s telling her that she’s not a monster just because of what people forced her to do.... that she’s a hero... that hug.... dad behavior), and they do to some extent treat her as family... But to then really know, to feel and remember that she was actually adopted! She was a part of their family. To look at how she’s been calling herself Orphan while working with them this whole time... that’s so heartbreaking! I have cried about this idea so much! I want so badly a conversation between her and Bruce now where he offers to officially adopt her again, I need it so bad and if it doesn’t happen at some point in the next year or two I will be so distraught.
D (canon is a coward and won’t)
i want an in-depth exploration of cass’ relationship to her own gender. being raised without language and you know with so much of her life being independent (remember: CASS RAN AWAY AROUND THE WORLD WITHOUT REALLY KNOWING ANY SPOKEN LANGUAGE) and outside of an organized society impressing too much of gender expectations on her, i feel like the way she experiences it would be very unique! like sure she’s so far been fine with being assigned ‘girl’ (ya know that comes with batgirl, and how people just automatically treated her based on how she looks) but in terms of gender expression and like her actual relationship with ‘traditional femininity’ etc like... because of how she was raised I just think she’d have a really different perspective on it that could be cool to explore, and I think she’d fall outside of the binary after she really thinks about how she identifies.
tldr on that: she/they nb cass is what i’m getting at here

Note
If it's any consolation, I'm sure that the Advisors and the rest of the MLA (Re-Destro, Trumpet, Geten) will show back up sooner than the final arc, just because we're going into Year 2 and the students would find great 1 on 1 or team opponents with the Advisors. Re-Destro and Geten are heavy hitters (and Geten could be tied to Dabi, Shoto and all that somehow) and they were locked up with Mr. Compress and Machia, but who do you want to see first from the Advisors?
Thanks, anon; I certainly do hope we'll get to see more of them.  Admittedly, my main concern is that I so liked what was going on with the Paranormal Liberation Front that even if we do see all of the MLA types again, if it's only in the context of speedbump battles for the students, that's still going to be a letdown.  Better than nothing, to be sure, but I really do want them to join back up with the League, even a League that's confused and out of sorts under All For One's hand.  I love RD's big spiritual-awakening-flavored crush on Shigaraki, the cross-organization tensions and relationships, just as much as I love the depth the MLA brings to the world outside of just what's going on with the heroes.
I'm fairly frustrated with how the MLA fared during and after the raid, largely because it's awfully hard not to conclude that, if what we have right now is all the erstwhile-MLA are ever going to come to, Shigaraki would have been significantly better off if he'd just killed them all and shacked up with Ujiko for four months.  And that would be such a waste!  The end of My Villain Academia was such an enormous triumph for Shigaraki! I want his victory to amount to something more than what we've seen, something that shows that both his strength and his mercy will pay off for him in the long-term, will be a concrete benefit to him rather than, with the benefit of hindsight, the reason everything went so wrong.
Particularly with Re-Destro, since Horikoshi saw fit to have Dark Shadow all but one-shot the man, and Edgeshot defeat him off-panel, it's really not going to mean much to me for him to have a big fight with students unconnected to anything else.  The drama's rather gone out of it at this point.  That's particularly the case since, if he's no longer connected to Shigaraki's plot, it's that much easier for him to just be off-paneled and forgotten about.  But, if Rikiya gets looped back in with the League, if his gratitude and admiration of Shigaraki mean he still has a role to play in Shigaraki's arc, that makes it much easier to get invested in any fights that role will lead him to. Ditto the MLA more broadly; it's categorically ridiculous to present that organization with the kinds of numbers, breadth of influence and legitimate grievances they have, only to try to sweep them back under the rug exactly like Shigaraki accuses heroes of doing with everyone they can't save.
To say the least, I'm pretty invested.  But I appreciate your consolations and am trying to hold out hope that we'll get some good stuff with them yet!
My anxieties aside, and to hit the other portion of your ask--who would I like to see first among the Advisors?--hit the jump:
(All nicknames and shorthand are taken from this post.)
Well, it'd be nice if they could all get at least as much to do as the Eight Bullets back during the Hassaikai arc, seeing as they got a similar splash page spread introducing all their faces.  There are considerably more than eight of them, of course, but even if they never get more attention than e.g. Galvanize or the hose-faced guy who iced Midnight did, at least then we'd have some idea of their power sets and at least one angle on their personality.
Assuming we aren’t going to get full breakdowns on every single one of them, there are still four things I'd really like to see happen with the MLA/the Advisors: the student fights we're expecting, the jailbreaks we're being told about, the reunion with the League I'm praying for, and for literally anyone in the in-world media to try and get their side of the story.
Student Fights: Seeing the guy who killed Midnight again is as sure a bet as any of these get.  Momo is an important enough character, with enough sustained arc, that she will have to get something else to do before the series is over.  Taking command of a group battle against real opponents--ones with more responsiveness and agency than Gigantomachia--would be in-line with what she's been moving towards so far.  I would, however, love it if that fight would be more challenging than a straightforward battle of tactics.
I headcanon Hose Face and Scarecrow as, respectively, an ex-con and a dude with physical disabilities--both people who have ample reason to want to change the series' status quo irt human rights abuses in prison and overly restrictive quirk use laws.  I'm not expecting the canon to validate me on what amount to wild guesses, of course, but I want those Advisors in particular to have motivations more nuanced than, "They're quirk supremacists; who cares why they're willing to put their lives on the line over this?"
A feel-good revenge match in which a bunch of teenagers lay the smack down on characters whose humanity the audience is asked neither to know nor care about would be lazy, and counterproductive to the series' current thematic concerns. Give Momo her victory, by all means, but don't give it to her easy.  A confrontation like this would be a good way for the less central Class A students to begin wrestling with the question of who, exactly, heroes "save" and what it is that people need to be saved from, exactly the way Deku and Uraraka and Shouto are now wrestling with these questions.
As far as other fights go, I'd also love to see Brand and The Question pop up again. They're probably the two I'm most curious about purely in terms of what their quirks are.  Why does The Question wear a mask, and what's he like that he wound up in Mr. Compress's chain of command?  And with Brand, what kind of quirk does he have that's powerful enough to land him a ranked position in the Guerilla Warfare Regiment but indirect enough that he fights with a sword?
Prison Breaks: I wouldn't expect this to be particularly involved, probably more of an aside than anything, but I want the Bindi Ladies to spring Hole Punch Face, thus getting us an angle on what's going on with that particular trio.  Aviator Teeth can come too because I want at least some hints about what his deal is.
I'd also love to watch Horikoshi even attempt to retroactively justify some of the logistics of the single-day capture and subsequent detention of 17,000 super-powered, combat-trained people.*  I mean, I don't think there are any feasible explanations for that, but I'd be curious to see what he'd come up with, especially if every possible answer just makes Hero Society look worse! We have only ever seen Tartarus as an example of the prison conditions in this country; I'd love to hear more, and an MLA-focused jailbreak would be a great way to show it.
PLF Reunion: Of course, my number one thing to see with a reunion is Re-Destro being just as dismayed as Spinner is over Tomura's possession.  I crave more serious attention being paid to Rikiya's profound awe over Shigaraki's freedom, and would love to see his reaction to Shigaraki apparently losing that freedom.
Aside from the obvious, though, if the PLF does start piecing itself back together, I expect to see Sanctum again, given the attention he's gotten so far, and the fact that he's now the highest-ranked member of the Tactics Regiment.  It'd be great to get some explanation for how he can possibly be "the longest-serving member of the Liberation Army," given that the Army was generations old already when Re-Destro was just a child.  (If we do get that information, I imagine my own explanation will be jossed hugely, so I would also be happy to take time with Sanctum that doesn't explain the discrepancy but also doesn't invalidate my headcanon.)
In the context of the regiments reforming, I'd also like to see Nimble and Aster, both because this manga needs more women, and because I'd like to see more of how Spinner and Toga interact with the people they were nominally commanding.
Media Attention: Trumpet's my number one hope here--the lack of any look into the state of the government in HeroAca Japan has been a total let-down since his introduction**, but I was particularly annoyed that the last time we saw him he was smiling (albeit in a fairly haggard way), giving me hope that we might next see him doing his part to portray all of this in a light that would sway public opinion.  And then literally one chapter later, we get prison guards talking about how the Hearts & Minds Party, a perfectly legitimized political party with representation on the national level, has been perfunctorily dissolved less than twelve hours from when the raid started.  How is there even an argument that the system heroes were upholding desperately needs to change?
I'm very tired of the media in BNHA only ever showing up to beg for/demand that heroes tell them what’s going on, particularly those damn press conferences. Journalists do investigative work! Newspapers employ reporters to actively seek out news!  Reporters in free countries don't just sit around waiting for the government or heads of major industries to graciously hand them press releases!  For heaven's sake, Trumpet was the head of a major political party.  People should be foaming at the mouth trying to get a statement from him!
Especially with public trust in heroes breaking down, there should absolutely be intrepid reporters out there looking to get to the bottom of any of the layered conspiracies the public's just been hit with and told to just write-off as a bump in the road on the return to normalcy.
Anyway, Trumpet's the obvious choice, but if I could be sure the manga would validate my headcanons about Nimble and Scarecrow's disabilities, I'd be happy to put them in this position, too.  Trucker Toad would be another good candidate, if there's any basis to my idea that he is or used to be a transport driver who's seen a lot of the country outside the areas e.g. the Top Ten Heroes are patrolling.  He's obviously a good candidate for getting back to that idea of anti-heteromorph bias, too.  But really, I'd take anyone who can give a cogent explanation of the MLA's position on self-determination and the various ways Hero Society has exacerbated quirk-based discrimination.
Anyway, that's about where my thoughts are on where I hope the MLA people are and what we might see of them.  Thanks for the ask!
--------------
*Or as many as 100,000 more than that, depending on how through the statement, "Their bases around the country were also attacked, and their supporters rounded up," was meant to be.  An influx of 116K people, incidentally, would triple Japan's current carceral population.
**Why! Why would you introduce a politician and then never even glance at your setting's political situation??

[dorky-self-shipper] 🎫 here’s a gush pass :3 feel free to gush about whichever f/o you want, however much you want, then send this ask to 3 other selfshippers
Oh, my friend!!! Ahhh thank you so much for sending this in!! I have been a bit iffy because some things in my life have been piling up, but!!! I am so excited to dig into this!!! I really need a good gushing session haha!
Today's target for gushing hours with your girl Ash is none other than Yaag Rosch!
This ended up being pretty long, and is a mix of lore, screaming, keyboard smashes, his gorgeous design, and more screaming.
Saying that this man lives in my head rent free is an understatement. He is all I think about it. Honestly, I think it's funny considering Yaag's role in FF13. He's only around in the first game, and shows up in like five cutscenes.
Also. We get crumbs of him in the novels. More on that later. Back to the game.
All he does is "hey yall suck" "your lives don't matter" "uhh i need to kill you guys" "oh wait no i'm not evil" "*dies*"
But!!! He's very cool!! His character is so interesting to me. He's so driven to do whatever it takes, but beneath his actions, there's always an edge of hesitation. He seems like he comes off as so sure of himself, but... I'm not sure about that. Now, I can't say anything for sure because the writers hate him, I really liked those few moments where we get to see his actual thoughts.
For example, "Do you think we want to Purge our own people?!" And things like that where you see him question his orders. I feel like there's a lot of underlying hatred, distrust, and overall fear of the system.
Also, his development from "They aren't people, they're targets." to "I'll trust in your humanity." Gets me every single time.
Also don't get me started on his "if this is my punishment... i accept it." when he's bleeding line.
I am here to gush, not analyze. But both are happening anyway.
I feel as though he puts a lot of thought into what he says and how he acts, and I really do admire that.
For context, Lieutenant Colonel Yaag Rosch is this military higher-up guy. I remember seeing him for the first time and my jaw simply dropping. I know that these games have a history with hot villains. After all, I am an FF7 fan. I have seen the SOLDIERS, I have seen the Turks, I've seen Rufus. They're all hot.
There. I said it.
Tumblr media
This intro scene gave us some damn good food. Like??? The silver hair??? The ponytail??? The scar on his forehead??? The overly dramatic speech about how the protagonists need to be eliminated??AJKLFNAWKJFNAWKLJFNWILEN.
(Also, I'm beginning to see the resemblance he has to Felix. I am a very predictable woman, aren't I?)
Tumblr media
I am actually going to scream. He’s so handsome!!! His jaw!! His eyes are such a pretty color too!!! I wanna give him a kiss ahhh!! Especially on his forehead scar!!! He's so... woah.
Also, he has a really, really nice voice. Like??? WOW. I want this man to like. narrate my life. Here, lemme find some clips of him talking.
Here. Enjoy.
This one is a fan favorite as well.
It's not a Rick roll. I promise.
..... Unless?
Anyways, as time went on, I realized that he's actually such a deep and interesting character?? He gets done dirty by the writers and the game, but the potential he has makes me so excited!! There's so much material to work off of!!! Truly one of the more interesting villains the trilogy has to offer. Honestly, it's kind of difficult going through the second game knowing that he isn't there.
However, it's also difficult going through the second game because I??? Can't beat?? The goddamn boss fight??? I'm also playing on easy mode. I didn't struggle this much during the first game either. What the hell, Ash.
Back to the actual topic.
I'm gonna start off with his design before we delve into s/i lore and fun tidbits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(His coat is so cool... Do you think he'd let me wear it? I'd probably waddle around in it because he's pretty tall and I. I am not.
He's around 6'2 (around almost 188 cm..? I think?), but take into account his boots too. Which means that normally he's slightly taller. That means that he's about a foot taller than me. That means that I'm pretty much the perfect height to bury my face in his chest. *screams*)
Talk about a kickass design. He's really cool to look at. Not only, uhm, *blushes*, but because of how cool his outfit is too! It does a really good job of portraying that "heyyy i'm super importtanntttt" energy that he has. He carries himself like he's the shit. And you know what? He is.
He's pretty professional. Minus the times he gets kinda pissed. The novels say, and I quote,
"They said he was the most straitlaced man in PSICOM - if you put serious and stubborn in a military uniform, you'd get Colonel Rosch."
And yeah. That basically sums it up.
Also, there's this scene where he gets all pissed and pulls out his sword and I'm over here like *insert debby ryan hair thing here*. I'm telling you, it's always the sword boys that get me. I'm sure you've noticed that by now. I don't know what it is but. It's a thing.
Oh!!! Oh!!! Speaking of the *tucks hair behind ear*, there's this one scene where he's chasing the protagonists. And he goes, "Clever, aren't you?"
*SCREAMS*
That scene is truly a masterpiece. Thank you for the good food, Squeenix. I remember having to take a moment to just pause and regather myself. Actually, I had to do that the first time I saw him too-
I wasn't alone at the time when he was introduced so I was just silently like "ohmygodhellosir ajrfnaklwenjklwenjklrn" but oh my GOODNESS.
My s/i works with him! She's pretty much his right hand woman. She always has reports and intel on all their missions ready to go! I find it cute how well they work together, be it for mission-related matters, or just when they're relaxing together.
Just like pretty much all of my other s/is, she's a raging academic and total nerd. In the first game, they basically live on this human paradise called Cocoon. It ends up not being so great because the gods want to murder humanity but anyways! Education is pretty much free and you can study whatever you're passionate about. That's why she has studied just so many things.
She's not exactly the type who aspired to join the military, but alas! Things happened. I like to think of it as a "heyyyy y'all needed my help once and then once turned to twice and twice to thrice and then i never left" type thing.
Oh, and then she fell in love with Yaag while she was there.
Her cheery attitude is a direct opposite to his, but they're also able to have some very serious conversations with each other. I love their dynamic so much! Also, he can get a bit softer when he's opening up to her and,,, Soft Yaag??? Hoo boy.
Her motives and beliefs tend to align a bit more with the Cavalry branch, but i feel as though she fits in better with PSICOM. Also, the book describes the soldiers to be a bunch of dumbass dorks and just the thought of her smiling and cracking jokes with all of Yaag's men make me super happy.
Oh and she gets a cool uniform too! Because I said so.
Now, they've known each other for years by the time the end of the first game rolls around. They're happy together, maybe even engaged! It can go one of two ways here. He either dies or he doesn't.
I like adhering really closely to canon with my ships (*laughs in genesis angst*) but I also think it would be a blast if he were to survive.
In the novels after his death, some recordings of his are found. It's basically him talking about how the government sucks from the inside. A character finds these and reveals them to the public to get rid of the old government and an invite a newer one that actually cares about the people. However, it's never quite stated how he got those recordings. And that's where Ash steps in.
She brings them to his attention and helps him out, but then returns to live with the rest of the remaining soldiers in that camp they set up in the second novel. They all look up to her as a leader-type, which I find is really funny because she doesn't exactly have the qualifications? She worked with PSICOM, but was never exactly a soldier. But hey, it's right after the world (quite literally) fell apart, I don't think that anybody cares about that.
Also, there's another chapter where Snow ends up visiting, and she has a friendly chat with him!!! She helped out the protagonists a little bit near the end of the first game, so they have a slight idea of who each other are, but that doesn't exactly change the fact that she fell under the category of villain for a lot of it, despite not actually being a bad person. I also think that their dynamic would be fun. Snow also just makes me really happy LMAO.
I think that this version of Ash is really fun just because of how much the experience hardens her? She spends a lot of time grieving. Also!!! Whether or not she makes a cameo in 13-2 (maybe near the ruins early game?) is totallllyyyy up to you hehe! I think it would be neat for her to talk to the protagonists of that game, especially since Yaag was the one who orchestrated the Purge and at the ruins, there's a huge monument of the names of people who were killed there.
Also, whether or not she has a son here is up to you. I like to think of all my ideas all happening in alternate timelines so everything I want can happen without stepping on other events? I imagine their child to have Yaag's pretty silver hair with Ash's brown eyes.
Also, 13-2 is about time travel so like. The protagonists meeting their child in the future when he's all grown up? Good stuff.
But hey, in the main timeline she's alone after Yaag's death. She helps the other characters. I also think that in time, she does work for the Academy? I mentioned that she's pretty nerdy earlier, so that definitely helps out. She's super cool!!! Such a badass!!!
Now, on the flipside of things, what if he survived? Then what happens? shameless self promo
Yaag still has those recordings, and they do still reach Captain Rygdea. They both live in the small village that the remnants of PSICOM created. It's a sweet life. Are fankids a thing in their future? Yeah, probably.
I feel like Yaag would be a really good dad. I headcanon that he has a very strong relationship with his own father as well. He's caring and stern, but also knows when to turn down the serious scale. The novels also say that he likes kids!?!?!? I know I've screamed about this point like 24892 times on my blog. But.
Tumblr media
It's so cute??? Who would expect this super serious and mean man who quite literally says that the protagonists aren't people, they're targets to like children of all things???? It really is my favorite thing ever just because of how cute it is. I also have a few tiny cousins in my family, so him playing with them makes me very soft too.
("Would you please stop tugging on my hair- Ash, this is not a laughing matter!" "Oh, but it so is.")
I think that detail really helps hint at him having a more gentle side? And I adore that.
Also, I mentioned how Snow pays a visit to the PSICOM camp after the events of the first game? I think that would be very interesting with Yaag there because before Yaag dies in canon, Snow says, "Stay alive. We'll see you when it's over."
And now he finally gets to see him. The conversation would get surprisingly deep and definitely dive into Yaag's motives and real thoughts about his actions in the game. I really enjoy the few interactions those two have in the game.
Anyways, now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's dig into the meat and potatoes of this ship.
In 13-2, they get a separate dlc side story just to themselves. Because I said so. I'm not sure how the plot of this works, but it's basically them exploring Gran Pulse together. Maybe to map things out? Maybe to get better acquainted with the world they thought was a hell their whole lives? Maybe there's some sort of big mission they have to do? We'll figure it out.
Basically, it's a whole side story of them exploring and kicking monster ass together. The combat is regular 13 combat.
Yaag has his sword along with some explosives (we see him carry some grenades at the end when he blew himself up). And Ash also has a sword because I like swords.
In the game, usually only l'Cie, or magic god slaves, can use magic. However, after the fal'Cie (magic gods) go poof at the end of the end of the first game, some normal humans can use magic? It makes no sense and exists only for plot convenience, but I'm not complaining because it makes my plot easier too.
My point is, Ash can use magic! Because A) she's quirky mage material B) we need a balanced team C) Every single version of Ash so far has been a mage. D) I like magic a lot. Would be my go-to as well.
Also, if you're interested in how they work in battle, roles divide up very nicely between them.
Yaag has: -Commando (physical attacks) -Sentinel (beefy tanks) -Sabuteur (debuffing enemies)
Ash has: -Ravager (magic goes brrr) -Medic (i think you know) -Synergist (buffing allies) -Commando (physical attacks)
Maybe Yaag could get medic too to balance off the load in battle? They're a blast in combat because they really do compliment each other.
Anyways, back to the adventure.
It's the two of them traveling around. The main focus of it is their conversations as they travel. There's a lot of fun banter. Ya know how like when you're walking around in Naughty Dog games and your characters are just chatting? Yeah. That.
Their conversations are super random and they cover pretty much every single topic ever. They go from really serious to them just being stupid. I love their friendly banter.
Also, when they set up camp and are about to sleep, we get to see sleepy Yaag in action. And do you know what that means?
It means we get to see Yaag with his hair done a bit looser, maybe even down!!! Yaag with his hair down is all I want to see. It's what we deserve. It's what we need. The day that I see Yaag with his hair down is the day i achieve true happiness LMAO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's what we need.
Ash playing with his hair??? Yes, I most definitely think so.
Oh and there is totally a "Yaag, I'm cold." "Allow me to help remedy that. *pulls her closer*" type moment because they're cute like that.
All in all, their travels are really fun. Maybe somewhere around there they run into the protagonists? Either from the first game or the second game. I think that would be a fun mess.
I feel like Yaag can show a softer side of him around her and that makes me really happy. He deserves to be happy and I love him very much.
I think about him all the time, and just the thought of him holding me makes me so happy. He really is just adorable.
Before I wrap this up, I have a few more things I want to speak about! Firstly, allow me to share one of my favorite pictures of him because oh. my. god.
Tumblr media
*screams*
The urge to backhug him!!! Ahh!!! He's so cute!!!! I just wanna hold him aelajflanef.
One of my favorite pre-relationship moments from them is this one time where Yaag is pretty down in the dumps, and Ash is talking to him about it and offering her advice. And as she talks, she gently places a hand over his (they're seated side by side btw). He looks up at her in shock, and she takes back her hand is like, "O-oh! I'm so sorry, I should've asked first, I just thought tha-"
And then he just snatches her hand back and gently holds it. You can see the tips of his ears burning red haha! I think that they're pretty cute ajfwnjklef
She always tries her best to take care of him, too! He needs a hug, and she is more than happy to provide. She always tries to remind him to eat his meals on time and such, even if she can be questionable at following her own advice at times. She can also be a bit of a tease sometimes, so he can get pretty annoyed (not really, he thinks it's cute) sometimes.
However, he also does his best to take care of her. Would he pull the "that's an order." card after she refuses to rest, pulling several late-nighters for work? Yeah. Probably. He's very caring, even if he can come off as very serious and scary sometimes.
To wrap things up, I love Yaag Rosch.
Thank you for your time.

Make a Change P15 (an Explanation and Summary)
Part Fifteen (An Explanation and Summary)
So, as I recently posted, I don’t plan to continue this story any longer. As much as I loved writing it, I also...fell out of love, I suppose. I just don’t have the time, passion, or motivation to try forcing myself to write it anymore, and it’s unfair to you guys to have to accept a sloppy second, something thrown onto a document for the sake of a word count and an update. I want to write stuff I’m proud of, and that just wasn’t happening with this story.
That said, one reader asked for a summary, so that they could get some closure. Luckily, I have some notes that I took as I planned the story and started writing it, and I thought you’d like to see some of them. This includes three things: 1. The schedules for most of the main characters 2. The heroes I was planning on bringing in and 3. All of the ideas I had for “Who on Earth will Marinette end up with?” (This was a doozy.) Along with this, I want to talk about other pairings I had in mind.
With that all said, let’s hop right in!
The Schedules:
I really planned out their schedules, just so I could start figuring out who the Quantic Kids would be. I had a general idea in mind: Each student at Collège des Arts would have to take their four core classes (History, Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science), a language, and then their last period would be a two hour block that focused on their artistic talent. I set it up this way so that I could integrate the Quantic Kids into Marinette’s life. (Along with this, I made it so the whole school had lunch after fourth hour, so that the morning had four hours of classes, and the afternoon had three. I note this, because some schools separate lunches based on fourth hour, so that there is an A, B, and C lunch. I...did not feel like dealing with that, and I wasn’t sure how French schools do it but I doubt it’s like that.)
Marinette Dupain-Cheng’s schedule:
1. History (right next to Félix, later on stuck between him and Adrien) The original plan never had Adrien’s arrival, it was supposed to be a moment of comic relief where Marinette and Félix were just kind of half awake and barely conscious at any given time during first hour. This is why their history teacher, Mr. Marcel, was either wide awake or dead asleep. I thought it’d be a cute moment to show off the dynamics of their exhaustion or energy, depending on the day. I didn’t show this off nearly as much as planned, however, because I shifted my focus soon after.
2. Language Arts (with Allegra). A nice, calmer class seemed perfect for Marinette, who’d probably still be waking up. Allegra is calm and classy, so it only made sense to pair the two up for the second hour.
3. Science (Claude’s here!) Loud and exciting, just like their class seems to be, it was a perfect pairing.
4. Math (with Allegra and Claude) I wanted to show off Allegra and Claude’s...chaotic dynamic.
5. English (with Allan) Marinette wants to be a fashion designer, and she had to take a language, so she thought “hey, fashion is pretty big in America, let’s learn English”. (It was also the only class I could think of that she and Allan would take...more on that later.)
6. Fashion Design. Pretty self-explanatory.
Allegra:
1. German. Allegra likes opera music, and wanted to mimic the sound of some German singers accurately.
2. Language Arts (with Marinette, as mentioned above)
3. Science (a different teacher than Marinette and Claude, though. What a pity) (Also I apparently called it ‘physics’ in my notes and I just noticed.)
4. Math (With Marinette and Claude)
5. History
6. Choir (She’s a singer.)
Claude Mercury:
1. English (It was for the theatre, but also for Shakespeare, but more accurately….for Shakespeare’s more inappropriate humor.) (and memes)
2. History
3. Science (with Marinette) (Lots of explosions and fires were planned)
4. Math (With Allegra and Marinette)
5. Language Arts
6. Drama. He was just a simple thespian lad who wanted to have fun and make friends, what can I say?
Allan:
1. Math
2. Science
3. Language Arts
4. History
5. English (with Marinette) He likes hip hop and rap, and wanted to learn English rap, too. He, like Claude, also loves their memes, and I planned to have a few moments where he explained some to Marinette.
6. Dance. Mainly hip hop, although the boy can break dance a little bit
Félix Agreste:
1. History (with Marinette) He’s tired in the morning, but good at reciting dates. Again, had a lot more planned for this.
2. Math
3. Spanish. (“Come on, guys, it’s logical. It’s one of the most spoken languages in the world.” -Félix, probably.) I also planned for Félix to already know English. I wanted a cute chapter where he tutored Marinette, only for Claude to start dramatically monologuing because ‘why do you help her but never help me? The betrayal, Fe, the betrayal!’
4. Language Arts
5. Science
6. Music (he’s a piano boy in my heart) (maybe also good at violin) (a classy young man)
Adrien Agreste:
1. History (with Marinette)
2. Language Arts (with Marinette)
3. Science (with Marinette)
4. Math (with Marinette)
5. Chinese (with Marin- oh, wait, we’re done with that!) This class, along with his next, is another reason Adrien relaxed so quickly at the school. By taking Chinese at school, he was able to convince his father to stop the at-home lessons, clearing up some of his schedule.
6. Music. Same as above, playing piano at school meant he didn’t have to do it at home so much.
The Heroes:
“But salthaven, you already introduced the heroes! Envision and Viperion, remember?” Haha, as if those were the only guys I had planned?
Yeah, I had more. Four more.
I wanted the Quantic Kids to be heroes. I had three of them for sure chosen, names and Miraculi assigned to them. (Allegra was my only problem child, but I’ll explain that below.)
The first was supposed to be Allegra. I was going to make her the Fox, with the name Mélodie. I’m pretty sure that was her original hero name, back during the PV stage of this show, and I wanted to pay an homage to her inspiration. But then Félix got it, because I didn’t end up giving him the Cat (yeah, I was really salty when I started this, and I was planning to go the same route that I do in my ao3 fic, Of Patience and Pettiness, and take away the Cat from Adrien to give to Félix.), as Adrien learned from his mistakes. So Allegra waits, and Envision springs to life with Viperion.
Next would be Allan. Miraculous: Bee. Name: Mellifury, based on Mellifura (aka the Africanized Killer Bee) + Fury. He was supposed to be an unexpected storm. A dancer, he uses rhythm in a way that throws off opponents. Uses the spinning top like it's another limb, throws the game way off when first introduced.
Then we’d have Allegra. After a while, I decided that the Rabbit would be best suited for her. Messing with timelines is a tricky business, but Allegra has a knack for details and organization that would leave her cruising through her tasks with some practice. While it’s nothing musical, it would be fun to see. Name: Cottontail.
Finally, after an interesting fight that would cause Nathalie to lose the Peacock...Claude would step in. Bold and flashy, the thespian knows how to strut his stuff. But again, he’s a thespian, and theatre kids know when it’s time to hide in the shadows and stay unseen and unheard. With dark blues that can hide in the name and stand out in the daylight, Claude would become Le Paon, turning the tide and becoming a major help for the team. [At first, he dealt with some sickness, but after a talk with Ladybug, who in turn talked to Fu, the Miraculous was fixed and Le Paon could fight as easily as the rest.] He’d use sentimentals wisely, although he’d have a bad habit of monologuing as he created them.
The Ships:
The moment we’ve all been waiting for. Our first question: Who the hell was Marinette going to end up with? Well, that answer changed throughout the story.
The first choice: Félix. I wanted Marinette to move on from Agreste...and fall in love with Agreste. It humored me, and I was in love with a bunch of Felinette one shots at the time. (And, again, very salty towards Adrien at the moment.)
But then I redeemed Adrien. No problem, I thought. Marinette could choose between one of the boys...and the other would date Luka! (I mean, did you see the Instagram picture of Luka and Adrien. Luka with either Agreste would be cute, just imagine the musical moments they could have together)
But then I Akumatized Juleka, and Luka was right there...and I made Marinette fall for all three guys. So I decided “Hey, she can just date all three!” And so that’s the final choice, because I’m apparently a sucker for poly ships.
But I mentioned other ships, didn’t I? So let’s talk about those!
First: Luka with an OC. Yep, I was going to bring in a new girl. It was actually going to be one of my friends, due to a conversation we had that went as follows:
S.H. (Salthaven): So I’m thinking that I’m going to pair up Félix and Marinette. Thoughts?
F. (Friend): Okay, but what about Luka?
S.H.:  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
F.: Well then pair me up with him!
So I did. Or I was going to...but then poly ship idea happened.
As mentioned above, I also considered Luka with either of the Agreste boys. Whoever Marinette didn’t date. Again, couldn’t happen because I went for that sweet poly route.
Finally: Claude and Allegra. What can I say, they act like an old married couple in my mind!
And that’s everything! Once all the heroes were chosen, and romantic confessions set aside, the Miraculous Team was going to gear up and take down Hawkmoth once and for all. Fun times, the end, we all get a happy ending.
So I hope that makes up for my rather abrupt end to this story. Thank you all for the time you put in, reading my writings, and I hope you enjoy the other works I plan to create! Until next time. <3

ALLY!!! Congrats on 1k, that's such a huge milestone! I would like to request a matchup with a bnha and haikyuu male character please. I use she/her pronouns, I consider myself a Hufflepuff with a dash of Ravenclaw, and I want to be a science teacher or a researcher in the future! I'm generally pretty friendly and enjoy talking to other people. School is really important to me but I procrastinate sometimes >.< Ahh idk what else to say so that's it from me hehe. Thank youu, ily!!
Zeze!! ily2!! I was so excited when I saw you sent me an ask!
I pair you with...
Tumblr media
Eijirou Kirishima!!
LISTEN! I tried to not be cliche about your match but like...you two fit together so well? I literally could not think of a better partner for you 😭
Kiri was a little nervous to ask you out, he was just so enamored with you that he didn’t think his heart could take rejection. After Bakugo told him he was a fucking idiot and to MAN UP. Which of course, gave Kiri enough courage to show up at your front door with a single red rose and a profession of his undying love for you....Okay it was pretty cheesy, but you absolutely loved it?? I mean how could you not? Anyway that day was the happiest day of his life and he tells that to everyone he introduces you to.
While he himself is not the brightest and may not be the best when it comes to school, he is very supportive of your endeavors to further your education! He’s also your biggest cheerleader and will do his best to motivate you to get your work done in a timely manner. He also tends to spoil you when you’re studying by bringing you snacks and reminding you to take small breaks so you don’t get too bogged down!
What attracted him to you the most was your kind heart and caring spirit. He loves how sweet you are and how you seem to get along with everyone. He really doesn’t think there’s a bad bone in your body and that you’re the most precious thing on the planet. Because of that he also feels that you should be fiercely protected and if anyone is mean to you he will definitely not stand for it.
He is also amazed by how super creative you are. You’re a true artist and he loves seeing the different things that you make. He would be very supportive of your graphic making and writing! He doesn’t see himself as very creative so he thinks that its really fascinating what you can come up with!
A perfect date would be a festival! Not only can Kiri show you off, but he can also win you anything you want. He’s ridiculously good at the games and somehow has amazing luck with them. Bakugo will definitely make fun of how in love he is with you, but he just shrugs it off because you’re definitely worth it.
Tumblr media
Tetsurou Kuroo!!
Okay so he’s a fellow science lover but like in the best kind of way.
He is a very tall boy and isn’t afraid to tease you about how much shorter you are than him. But it’s all in good fun, he loves everything about you and it just wouldn’t be normal for him to not pick at someone he cares about. Still he makes it clear that he’s joking and knows not to go too far with any of his banter. If he does upset you by accident then he is quick to rectify any hurt he caused. He’s not trying to be mean after all.
You probably met in a science lab in college. He chose you as his partner because you were definitely the prettiest girl in class. That being said, he was pleasantly surprised to find out how knowledgeable you are! In fact, if he were totally honest with himself, then he’d admit that you actually are smarter than him. But he sees this more as a challenge for himself to learn more instead of as a shortcoming.
He is also the type to procrastinate with you instead of trying to convince you to get your work done. He can be a bad influence in that way. He can also be very distracting when he wants to be in the sense that he’ll bug you whenever he gets too bored with whatever it is he’s doing. You sometimes have to set a boundary with him in order for you to get anything done, but he respects it 100% and will back off if you tell him to.
Also he is like the best video game partner? So he grew up with Kenma, the ultimate gamer, as his best friend. So one of his love languages is quality time! His favorite way to do that is to play games with you, more-so co-op than pvp, but he will play anything you want. He commonly rounds up the old team from Nekoma to play Among Us with you both and as you can imagine calamity ensues.
The perfect date...he would rent out an entire movie theater just for you two to enjoy a private marathon with unlimited snacks. It would be a mix of your favorites as well as new releases that you both wanted to see! He’ll also definitely order you both some takeout if snacks don’t cut it. The whole time he’ll have his arm around you and have a huge smile on his face!

Out Of Character Questions
ROLEPLAYER GET TO KNOW YOU PROMPT

OOC About Your Character(s)
1.     What do you want to get out of playing this character(s)?
I used to RP on Tumblr a lot in the Megamind fandom, and seeing other Dark Crystal RPers on here made me want to try getting back into RP a little. Since I don’t have any Dark Crystal OCs who lend themselves well to RP, I decided to go with a canon character, and skekZok was a prominent one who hadn’t gotten a blog yet. I’ve always liked looking at characters and thinking about what makes them tick, so this gives me a fun chance to do that for him.
2.     Describe your character(s) with three words.
Cultured | Sadistic | Hypocritical
3.     What made you decide to write this muse?
I’d been following the blogs of a few other Skeksis RPers, and the absence of Zok had been remarked on. Since he’s one of my favorites, I decided to make a blog for him and join in the fun.
4.     If you could change one event in your muse’s life (in their main or canon verse), what would you change?
That’s a tough one, because Zok really doesn’t suffer that much in canon compared to other characters. I might stop ZokZah from trying to burn out part of his soul, but skekZok wouldn’t exist and there wouldn’t be much of a story if I did that. (If we include the JM Lee novels, I’d change it so he doesn’t throw skekSa under the bus.)
5.     If you could tell your muse one thing, what would you tell them?
“Don’t stab the blonde Gelfling girl. It won’t prevent the prophecy, and she’ll just come back to life anyway.”
6.     If you could give your muse one gift, what would you give them?
I’d love to see his reaction to a Swiss Army knife.
7.     If you had to take one positive thing away from your muse, what would you take away?
I’m not sure how positive this is, but I’d take away his ability to believe his own lies. It would be interesting to see how he tries to juggle all the conflicting rules and stories he’s come up with over the centuries.
8.     If you could “borrow” one aspect of your muse and apply it to yourself or your own life, what would you borrow?
His talent for speaking in public. I wish I could command an audience like he does.
9.     Do you genuinely want your muse to be happy? What do you think would make them most happy in life?
Considering the kind of things that tend to make Zok happy? Maybe. As for what would make him happiest, he believes it would be achieving immortality and remaining one of the highest-ranked of the court and having skekSa as his permanent mate, but that still won’t heal the spiritual emptiness inside him. Much as I enjoy Zok and Zah as separate beings, I do think reunification was the best thing for them. If he and SaSan could have been together after that, that would have been even better.
10. Do you enjoy putting your muse through angst? What do you think would break their heart the most?
I don’t mind angst in small doses, as long as I plot it out with the other player(s) beforehand and we agree how it will turn out in the end. Zok doesn’t lend himself easily to angst, but losing his place in the court hierarchy or having one of his allies turn on him would do it. He’s also come to genuinely believe the mythology he’s invented over the centuries -- anything that seriously challenged that worldview would be hard for him to deal with.
11. What do you love about your muse?
A lot of things. His charisma, his striking blue eyes, the way his voice is deeper and smoother than most of the other Skeksis, how over-the-top his gold outfit is, how he’s so attached to his headdress that he doesn’t even take it off in the spa, how unrepentantly creepy and sadistic he is -- he’s a very enjoyable character, even if he is a horrible birb.
12. What do you hate about your muse?
He's not an easy character to have interact with everyone. He can pretend to be nice when it suits him, and he’s not totally incapable of caring about people, but he’s still nasty enough that I can tell in advance a lot of interactions wouldn’t go well.
13. What about your muse amuses you?
The contrast between the austere image he tries to keep up, and how frazzled he gets when something upsets that image (”MY CARRIAGE!”). Also when he gets sarcastic or looks down on the others when they act in a less-than-civilized way.
14. What about your muse makes you sad?
All the people he’s hurt, and how unwilling he is to see that his way of life isn’t sustainable and won’t truly make him happy in the end.
15. How would you describe your muse to someone about to meet them, in person, for the first time?
“This guy is a creep, but he believes in good manners. Tread lightly, and you should be okay.”
16. Would you like your muse as a person if you met them in real life?
LOL no. He’s an awful person who is best left in the realm of fiction.
17. In what ways are you better than your muse? In what ways are they better than you?
I like to think I’m a much nicer person than he is. I can be blunt and a bit of a troll sometimes, but I really don’t like hurting anyone, or trying to force people to do stuff they don’t like. As for Zok, he’s much more confident and well-spoken than I am, and he’s had the determination to stick with one job for a thousand years.
18. Why do you think you connect to your muse?
We’re both interested in culture, myth, and history, and feel better when we can assign some order to the world around us.
19. What aspect of your muse’s personality is most important to you? What aspect of your muse’s personality do you think is most important to them? Is it the same? Why or why not?
As I see it, the core of Zok’s character is that he wants to bring order to the world; that’s why his job title is ‘Ritual Master’ rather than ‘High Priest’ or something more overtly religious. If he can’t see an obvious reason why things are the way they are, he’ll invent one that makes sense to him (and serves his needs).
I think this is what Zok sees as his most important trait too -- in his mind, he took a bunch of feral newborn creatures who (by all rights) were never meant to have existed in the first place, and helped turn them into a civilized, godlike people who rule an entire planet. But that feral nature is always under the surface, and they still need ritual and order (and yes, punishment) to keep it in check.
20. Has your character(s) changed over the time that you have been playing them? How have they changed?
I haven’t been playing Zok for very long, but I’ve recently had a chance to write how he feels about deeper questions, like what it would mean for Skeksis to have children, and what happens to Skeksis and urRu souls after they die. I think it’s made him a bit more three-dimensional.
About You!
1.     What is your name?
Kate, a.k.a. Crow or Lady Stormcrow
2.     What is your profession?
Social worker, currently working in substance abuse treatment.
3.     What do you do to relax?
Watch favorite TV shows, play video games, listen to music, hang out outdoors, chat online.
4.     What is your favorite treat (desert)?
I have a big weakness for flan and other custard desserts. Also caramel.
5.     Favorite movie
Amadeus (1984).
6.     Favorite book
Good Omens (and yes I loved the series too).
7.     Favorite vacation spot
Grand Cayman. We were supposed to visit again this spring, but COVID happened.
8.     Favorite Disney movie
I’m not sure I have one favorite, but I love Fantasia and The Rescuers.
9.     How did you first get into role playing?
Almost 20 years ago, lol. When I first started going online in high school, I made an online friend ( @ksclaw ) who introduced me to the concept. We played interactions with our SWAT Kats fan characters, and she helped me get the hang of it.
10. What was your first platform? If it was something other than Tumblr, what made you get into Tumblr?
It was Livejournal. I discovered Tumblr in late 2011 after my friends in the Megamind fandom introduced me to it, and most of us migrated here from our old LJ community. I loved being able to reblog whatever struck my fancy, and while my interest has waxed and waned, as you can see I’m still here.
11. What’s a grammar rule you find yourself breaking or ignoring a lot?
I like to think I have pretty good grammar. I know I’m guilty of run-on sentences, though, and I overuse ellipses and mix up ; and -- far too much.
12. Are there any languages besides English in which you think you could comfortably roleplay?
Not really. I can speak and understand a little Spanish and French, but not enough to write anything meaningful, and I’m wary of translation software for anything beyond a short sentence. Sorry!
13. Do you listen to music while your write?
Sometimes. Usually not when I’m doing the actual writing (that’s distracting, and I like to hear the words in my head), but I’ll listen to it beforehand to get myself in a mood or get some inspiration.
14. Are you a morning, day, evening, or night writer?
Late morning after I’ve had my coffee is usually my best time. Unfortunately I’m usually at work during that time, but on slow days and weekends I try to take advantage of it.
15. How does tiredness affect your writing?
It turns me into a zombie who can dream but cannot actually write.
16. What is your biggest obstacle to writing every day, if time doesn’t count?
Lack of motivation. I daydream and imagine stuff easily enough, but putting it down into writing is much harder, especially when I’m braindead from work.
17. How many drafts is a paralyzing amount?
More than 5 is daunting, though fortunately Zok hasn’t gotten that many yet.
18. Is there anything character-wise or writing style-wise that you can’t stand?
Players who are unwilling to have their characters be in the wrong, or who get upset if my character doesn’t react the way they wanted. Not all interactions are going to be smooth and happy, and I’m fine with that. Your character is not you, just like mine is not me.
19. What kind of anonymous questions are your favorite?
Weird ones. I like having my muses react to them.
20. What is your weakest point in writing? Angst, fluff, dialogue, etc.?
Fluff is kind of tricky. I don’t have trouble imagining it, but I get paralyzed thinking “this is too indulgent, I shouldn’t publish it, no one but me will like it, etc.” Maybe that’s part of why Zok appeals to me, because he’s not the fluffy type.

Top 10 Scenes in TDP Season 1 (pt. 1/3)
Top 10 Scenes in TDP Season 1 (pt. 1/3)
*not ordered in which is better or worse, but it will be in chronological order*
Also some things are worded weirdly. I have a pain in the ass time trying to get my thoughts across in words so... I thank you for your patience :))
_________________________________________
1) The scene where Callum, Ezran, and Rayla find the dragon prince. Ep. 2
I think this is one of the more pivotal moments in the show. I mean it is literally the scene that sets the story in motion after all! Two human princes, an elf assassin, and the lost dragon prince (who was thought to be dead/gone/egg destroyed(?)).. this is just IT.
*also i’m aware that Ez probably found the egg first cos he already knew about this secret area but still
Tumblr media
2) Viren (attempts to) proposes the idea to trade his life in for Harrow. Ep. 3
Tumblr media
Now there are other well thought and well written posts on this scene with Viren and Harrow, so I won't waste your time with all the gushy stuff. I find this scene important because it shows the lengths that Viren would go for his friend. Whether he's doing out of the goodness of his heart or some other selfish reason... maybe both(?)..
!WARNING! MINI VIREN POST ALERT EVEN THO I SAID I WOULDN'T GET INTO IT
In the book Moon, it dives deeper into the plot along with expressing the characters' thoughts and feelings. As for Viren, it's stated in the book that he wanted to:
"offer his life for Harrow's, but he wanted him to understand that this was more than just a sacrifice of a subject to his king. This was personal"
"... he would need to be straightforward. He wanted to say simply I love you and I will die for you" (Ehasz 80).
I have no doubts that Viren didn't not love Harrow or anything of the sorts, but at the same time it feels like there was another motive. Maybe there was, who knows.
All we know about Viren is that he's a father of two (Claudia & Soren), divorced/ separated from his wife, and he's a dark mage. Of course there's some more (like he's taller than Harrow according to the character line up)... also his staff... like if you look at it, it's the same one as the mage who faced Sol Regem all those centuries (?) ago. Maybe he's related to him, or possibly descended from one of the followers. I'd imagine that teaching dark magic may be a thing within his family and ancestors... he taught Claudia dark magic. That doesn't prove anything but it's a small thought.
ANYWAY-- this scene is one of many scenes that show Viren in a vulnerable state. The book gives a look into how he felt when he decided to sacrifice himself and everything. It's just interesting and I'm here for it.
3) Amaya and her weapons grade baguette Ep. 4
Tumblr media
On a less serious and more fun note, the fact that Amaya is a breakfast connoisseur is just perfect. Amazing. Fantabulous.
"As a breakfast connoisseur, she was offended that Ezran would neglect a hearty morning meal" (Ehasz 120).
I only emboldened and italicized "offended" because in the show YOU CAN LITERALLY SEE HER FACE WHEN EZ TELLS HER.
Bruh she was so offended lmaooo
It's right at 13:36 time in the show... the slow zoom in and all 😂
4) Amaya and Gren meeting Viren at the statue Ep. 5
Tumblr media
I’m trying to see if I should have paired this with the first scene where Amaya arrives first. That scene is pretty calm but has a somber feeling. It introduces the relationship of Amaya and Sarai without having to directly say it.
But this scene here is... interesting. Not in a good way or bad way, but we see they’re reminiscing of the past. At some point, they all got along nicely. Callum even noted in his spellbook that Viren’s family became like a second family to him when he moved to the castle.
This interaction was cute tho. It started out positive (sort of) with them joking about Viren eating the last jelly tart which pissed Sarai off lol. But then Viren went on to apologize to Amaya and reassured her that what he does is out of the goodness of his heart and love for Katolis. But...
“Aaaaand, he’s back, Amaya thought” (Ehasz 150).
And then went on to sign that he’s on a bunch of bs. See? Even Amaya knows he’s full of shit lol. But really tho... it makes me wonder how much of bs Viren goes on even before the events of the current story line.
5) Rayla saves Bait from the sea monster Ep. 5
Tumblr media
Let us give a round of applause for Rayla going against her fear of water to save Bait, the grumpy frog who hates her. I think this just goes to show how compassionate Rayla really is. This would include the time when she goes back to grab bait back in the banther lodge in episode 4.
6) Viren giving his kids their *secret* missions Ep. 6
Tumblr media
Okay this isn’t just one scene. I cheated yeah yeah whatever >:3
When Viren is telling Soren what he must do when he finds the princes, at first he doesn’t fully get it, but then.. OH n0
Viren’s intentions are starting to unfold and come together as one. Like, this man just told his own SON that should he find the princes, he should kill them. This 18 yr old bby
bruh
And Viren didn’t say it aloud, but he heavily implied it. Only to then gaslight him later on when Claudia confronts him in prison.
As for Claudia, Viren tells her that she must retrieve the egg. And do everything in her power to bring it back, even if it means that she’ll have to sacrifice Soren... her own damn brother ;-;
7) When Callum finally lets Rayla hold the egg Ep. 6
Tumblr media
This scene is pretty big. Rayla knows that Harrow is long gone and is trying to find a way to tell them. Obviously she doesn’t choose the best time to try it.
They were in a dire situation that could potentially kill them (even tho they had plenty of those moments already). The reason why this scene is so big is because it shows her struggle to break the bad news (ever since the right binding fell) as she continues to grow closer to them. Here you can see Callum passing the egg to her, despite her hand being in the terrible state that it is in. It is also the scene where right before passing it, he finally tells Rayla that he trusts her.
8) Human Rayla!! Ep. 7
Tumblr media
Human Rayla is so corny but it’s the good kind of corny. One of the best comedic jokes in the series!
That is all cos human Rayla needs an AU of being a nighttime tv host or smthg
9) Viren and Runaan Ep. 8
Tumblr media
yo this is alot okay. The scenes with these two introduced some Moonshadow philosophy and such (ie. not being scared of death). Runaan being the stoic and serious assassin that he is. And Viren not having any of this shit.
There are three major things here:
Runaan knows about the mirror and is most likely aware of who Aaravos is. He literally says, “That mirror? You have found something worse than death.” Goddamn...
And then Viren just... trapped his soul.. his essence into a goddamn coin. Just like that? wow. And hold it, almost admiring it in front of Gren.
Also this is the first time we officially see Viren in that form. In the beginning of episode 5 we are given a darkened silhouette of Viren and the butterflies. But here we see the damage resulted from years of having done dark magic, and it’s horrifying. He is the high mage and all but goddamn. I mean with every action there are consequences so-
10) Callum destroying the primal stone Ep. 9
Tumblr media
I feel like this is one of the “of course it’s this one!” scenes but it really is! Callum realizes that only a sky dragon can be hatched in the eye of storm and there he is with a literal storm in his hand. By now, Callum has come to understanding what feels right and that being a mage is his destiny. But he also understands that he needs to sacrifice some things for new beginnings. This whole journey was to get the lost dragon prince home and restore balance and peace and with the egg starting to die... well you can’t really do that without the egg.
It’s at 18:50 where he realizes all of this. It’s one of the big boy moments in the show. Seriously, it’s a big moment and the suspension helped get the feels in. And we got a cute baby dragon!!
End, begin. it’s all the same. (pls someone get that reference ;-;;;)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some honorable mentions:
- Episode 7: Claudia and Soren interacting. I love their sibling bond; it’s so silly and sweet and I love it. It makes me wish I had an older brother of some sort.
Ellis and Ava,, I like the flashback story given when they meet the dragang. I just like it, okay? Smol chiald w/ smol wolf pup and a hippie Lujaane seeing the beauty & strength in Ava.
CGI Coran. That all I have to say about that guy lmao
- Episode 8: When the group is going up the cursed caldera and they encounter that giant leech. Like can we just appreciate Callum’s funny way of making out a plan? Fat respect for that.
Another is when the group split up and waited for the leech to leave. The conversation between Ellis and Callum were sweet as was the one between Rayla and Ez. I loved Ellis’s admiration for Callum being a mage. And her expectations of what a mage was is pretty hilarious. So wholesome. The same goes for Ez when he gave Rayla that daily fill of positivity.
Like... Ellis is telling Callum how smart and confident and cool he is. And meanwhile Callum is like... it’s not me, it’s this. *whips out primal stone* And she goes on to tell him that she believe he’ll be amazing with or without the stone.
And Rayla is telling Ez how she failed in her job of killing the enemy. And Ez is telling her how she’s awesome at everything she does.
this is the positive wholesome shit I come for like... this is parallels but GODDAMNIT it’s so.. ;;;;-;;
Yo this is long ENOUGH! Thank you so damn much if you read to the end. You’re the real beauties. Anywho... uh parts 2 and 3 will be up soon.
It’s 11 now so I need some sleep. goodnight kids

Haven DVD Commentaries: 5.08 - Exposure
Commentary with Nick Parker (writer for this episode) and Brian Millikin (writer for 5.07)
In which the writers discuss various aspects of the episode including, Mara and Duke, Vince and Dave, the Trouble of the week, production and writing challenges, and Duke’s backstory with regards to his mom.
Content warning for discussion of alcoholism.
[They talk about how a lot of the episodes this season function almost as two-parters, including 5.07 and 5.08 and how the two of them worked together to make sure these two episodes fit together well.] BM: We broke these two episodes on the board side by side and the outlines and scripts went out together. That was the way we did it this season, both for production reasons, because to help us save time we shot two episodes together in block shooting, and also it kind of helped up to ever so slightly change up the pace and story telling of the show a little bit. Keep it a little fresher in this super-sized fifth season.
[They talk about how happy they are with the director for these two episodes and how they turned out; “Nice, dark, moody.”] NP: Some of the most fun scenes to write were between Duke and Mara here where she’s chained up, but she is the one that’s in control. BM: I love it. I think she’s so good as Mara. Look at this, just leaning into Duke’s face and just trying to work him at all times. She was great. They basically spent two full days doing all of these scenes in the hold of the boat. So Emily sat in this chair, literally chained to it (she had to be unchained to get out of the chair) for two days, and Eric just came in and out. And Lucas is in there a couple times as ghost Nathan but that’s it. And I think, she’s never been better. She’s been just as good, but never better.
NP: Yeah, these were super fun to write and then when we started to get the dailies in they were even more fun to watch because they did such a good job in these scenes. And what’s fun about 5.08 is the task of this episode was partly to tell an important Duke story but also to draw them closer together for where they’re going in episodes 9, 10, 11, 12. And starting to elevate their story. And in these scenes Duke starts to see a little bit of, maybe a kindred spirit, or he sees something in Mara that he respects if not likes. BM: And of course the question to be asking is, is that real what he’s seeing? Or is she putting on a show for him? Is she trying to draw him closer, or is it legitimate? Which is a question you’re asking all the way up until 5.13, when … spoilers. NP: Yeah, and also, what she asked him for there, she says she wants the Crocker Journal at first but then that’s not really what she wants. It’s about getting the story about Duke’s mother. Which is something we’ve never heard about, Duke has never talked about his mother. We’ve heard him drone on and one about his father who we’ve even seen in the past (episode 2.12, back in the day) but never heard tale of his mother. Which was an important thing. BM: It’s funny, I know big fans of Nathan groused a little bit because we once again are dealing with a story about Duke’s history and we get comparatively little about Nathan’s past. I think, they’re not wrong. It’s just kind of the way it worked out. The first season of the show was so much about Nathan and his dad - his dad was a regular on the show. And about the loss of his father and the aftermath of that. And we set up that his mom was gone from an early age and we learn a little bit about that in season 5b. But it was just the way of things that is just worked out that Duke’s history just kept coming up in ways that were more organic to the story. But never more so than this episode. I think it’s my favourite part of the episode. NP: It was my favourite part to write, outside of some lines from a character who’s going to be introduced very shortly [Seth], a returning character from an episode I wrote in season 4, 4.11 - Shot in the Dark.
BM: Now, Audrey and Duke here are both in the same wardrobe that they were in the previous episode. But we imagine this is the next day, we imagine a work-all-night situation. I think you kind of get that a little bit with Mara’s cut being a bit more healed. But it made sense that they’d be in the same clothes from working all night - if they know that Nathan’s out there and they need to save him, are they really going to go home, take a shower, change clothes?
[Nick comments on the Ghost Busters reference as Duke calls Seth and both of them laugh as Seth appears on screen, and comment how good Kris Lemche is in the role.] NP: Seth is named after my brother. BM: Kris is fantastic. NP: He’s great. He was such a delight on set and everything. The cast and crew liked working with him so much. He also brings shot of energy into everything. BM: Absolutely. He’s just a different kind of voice than we have in the show a lot. Especially without Jennifer who was a little bit of that outsider commentary. But I just love him. That scene in the script was exactly as written; cut to the inside of the van and a mountain of dirty clothes and cheetos and then you see hair like a shark fin pop up. NP: Which is basically a description of my bedroom and how I wake up every morning. BM: Absolutely.
[Vince and Dave in the hospital] NP: Ah here they’re playing Gin Rummy, which is a game I used to play with my grandfather all the time, before he passed away, and yeah I just thought it would be a great game for two old men - I imagine all old men play Gin Rummy, that’s just how they go through life. BM: Well this is the third time I think we’ve seen them play a different game together. It’s king of a motiv for Vince and Dave that we find them in the middle of playing something. I like it, it speaks to them a little bit. NP: Yeah and I kind of wanted to have them in a little bit of a different space in this episode. Seasons one and two especially, Vince and Dave were comic relief. BM: Absolutely. NP: We’d go to them and we’d have some nice back and forth, and bickering and banter, and it was a nice change of pace. But as things got darker and Vince revealed who he really is and Dave’s revelation about him being adopted, things got darker and I enjoyed being able to write them in a little bit of a lighter way. Which happens in this scene a little bit and then more so later in the episode. BM: Yeah and they also were not in the previous episode. These guys have never been in every single episode in a given season, but I think we had them so much in the previous episodes that they’re absence was felt in the last one so we were happy to have them back.
[Both of them laughing as Seth appears on screen again.] NP: That was also a nice thing about Seth. There’s kind of timelessness about Haven in some ways. We know when it’s set, but it feels kind of timeless because it’s the quaint small town and everything. And to be able to have Seth come in and make some strange pop culture references is always fun. BM: Yeah. We don’t typically have ton of pop culture references, so when we do it it stands out pretty well, like the Groundhog Day joke from a couple seasons past. But yeah you just get away with it with Kris Lemche. NP: Well luckily he sells it so well I can just be silly. And it’s fun. BM: It was great. I don’t remember when it was that we came up with the idea of bringing him in for this episode, but I think it was after we had settled on the idea of the ‘ghost’ Trouble. And then we knew that episode 7 was going to have All The Bad Things, and then episode 8 was going to be; now we actually have to solve the thing. And even you and I were like; how are we going to do that? And I think it was someone else who suggested, what they need is to try to find a way to reach out to Nathan and we’ve had one other episode where we’ve had devices that do that kind of stuff. And I remember someone was like; Come on, we can’t do a ghostbustery thing. And I was like; Well if you think about it, Nathan is the victim of a Trouble which means it’s caused by aether which means there’s a kind of residual aether quality to it, so of course it would work. NP: It was a conversation I was having with our excellent leader Gabrielle Stanton, where she was saying; We’ve been looking for a time to work Kris back in, they want to have him back up there and this could be a good time to do it. And I jumped all over the idea of writing him again, because he was just so much fun to work with. BM: Yeah, it’s funny, it’s a little bit like with William who shows up again in season 5b and so Seth, and they were just characters we really liked and actors we really liked in the role. And whenever we have a chance to, it’s something we’ve always tried to do, is bring people back. It helps to flesh out the world and make it feel a bit more real. NP: Absolutely. Living in the reality of the way things are. And though William is a transdimensional character from another world, he still brings - he jokes about the situations there’re in, he points out the ridiculousness of where they are, which is something that Seth does as well. So that’s always nice to incorporate whenever we can. And also necessary to  just lighten things. I mean Audrey is now talking to her ghost boyfriend in a desperate attempt to bring him back; it’s pretty heavy. BM. Yep. But this episode establishes Seth as a solid recurring character in our world, right along the lines of Marion from the pilot, Agent Howard, Stan, all the other people who have come to have a real role to play and I’m happy that he’s part of the club.
NP: The bourbon Duke and Mara are drinking here, Gunslinger Standard, we named that for a Stephen King reference. Gunslinger is a reference to Roland Deschain from the Gunslinger. And now they are just going to drink, and drink, and drink. BM: I love his glassware. NP: It’s pretty classy. I love how Duke is like; I’m going to have to tell this story so I’m going to have to be drunk, and the first thing he does is drink about three shots of bourbon in one go. BM: We joked about it internally and maybe we should stop joking because maybe it’s a serious problem that Duke has; he might be an alcoholic. We joked about having a drinking game; what if you just drank whenever Duke drinks. If you were to watch a couple episodes in a row, you would be hammered. NP: Yes. Luckily Eric Balfour is drinking sweet tea.
[As Seth and Audrey are talking in her office] NP: So we’re seeing Audrey’s confidence hit the bottom here. She’s come to rely on Nathan, she doesn’t have her immunity any more; she kind of feels lost in a way. And so this is asking a lot of her to put all this weight on her shoulders while also going through the stress of losing the person that she loves. And with Seth talking about he lost his partner as well (Anderson from 4.11) there’s a little bit of kinship there between them. BM: Yeah absolutely, I think that parallel of them both having lost a partner, and what are you without your other half, is fantastic. NP: It was fun to write. BM: And also just on a purely mercenary level; she needed someone to talk to in these scenes. Because Duke is off on the Mara side of things, which he has to be. Audrey can’t talk to Nathan. And there’s nobody else. So the fact that he’s there is useful, but he really brings something to is; the actor does, the character does. NP: Yeah he’s good. And he did a great job with Adam Copeland in past episodes, though we don’t have Adam for these episodes as we said before. BM: Yeah and Vince and Dave are still in North Carolina. NP: And thankfully for us, Emily is a hilarious person with great comedic timing, so her dry delivery works so well. BM: Yeah I know, I always wish that we could get more opportunities for her to be funny. Because she is.
BM: So we’re back in the Raleigh hospital with Dave trying to make a desperate escape. BM: I remember how much conversation we had, you and I in particular, about the fact they’re in the Raleigh hospital. NP: Oh my god. [They discuss the journey from North Carolina to Maine and how they’ve driven it before and the routes you might take and the places you might go past, and how Raleigh is not one of them.]  BM: But we figure they’re not locals, they don’t know North Carolina. NP: I was fighting hard. But I remember it also came down to a discussion about how is Manteo pronounced. And I called the Manteo tourism board to confirm. BM: But these hospital scenes were fun for these two. We shot them all in one day, I think, one afternoon? And it wound up being really fun. You had kind of an uphill battle because you knew they basically just had to be in the hospital room; that was it. And we needed four scenes. But you did a great job with it.
NP: Oh here comes the story about [Duke’s] mother, which was quite a doozy. BM: Now I remember, we had always talked about how this episode would be the one where Duke opens up and tells Mara a story. Tells her a story about his mom, something that Mara wanted him to tell her. And it was a big deal because she’s asking for something and now he’s giving it to her. And something he didn’t want to share, something he hasn’t shared before. In the thumbnail document, the story pitch and then the outline of these scenes, it just said; Duke tells a story about his mom. And the outline was great, so it’s like; Nick, go write the scripts, and I think it was Speed Weed, one of our other writers, was like; Should we talk about what this story is? And our show runners were like; Nah, Nick go deal with it. We call it a WP - Writer Problem. So a lot of times the outline will call for someone to steal something, and the details of how they steal it is a WP, it’s left to the writer to figure out. But this was a HUGE WP, because this was a significant story about one of our main characters, and none of us knew which way you were going to go. I remember seeing you in the office thinking and working on it, and then we all finally saw the script you came up with, and it was Awesome. NP: Thanks! It was a lot of fun to write. But, as you said, it was a mountain because, I mean Duke is such a big character. So I kind of decided to go the whole way with it and turn it into a kind of origin story. BM: It’s what made Duke, Duke. Or, finished the job of turning him into Duke. NP: Yeah. Duke had learned some things from his father and saw the path his father was headed. BM: He’d already been abandoned, his father was a douche, and then he died. NP: We know from past episodes that his father died in 1983-ish, because of Lucy. And so he would have been 8 years old or something. So it’s like, where does he go from there, how does he turn into the character that we know, this guy who speaks Mandarin and is a rogue and smuggler and everything else? And so I really kind of tried to have that story tell what made Duke, Duke. BM: Yeah, like part two of his origin story. NP: Yep. BM: But it was really great. Really sad. NP: Real sad. BM: But it felt earned. I don’t know, I just loved it. I think If it changed at all [from the first draft], I’m talking like we moved the word ‘the’ or ‘and’ around. Sometimes we have stuff that really doesn’t get changed at all, just because everyone really liked it. And it made perfect sense. Once you read it, it really couldn’t be anything else. NP: Thank you. It was also funny later on in production when we were talking about cutting a couple things and knowing we had to cut for time, there was never any discussion of shortening any of those scenes whatsoever. It was like; everything in the hold we’re keeping, forever, so the cuts are going to have to come from elsewhere. BM: I remember you also had to work a lot on the details of Seth’s stuff because one of the other WPs was; And then Seth’s got “the device”. And it was never really specified what that was. But when you’re writing the script you’re going to have to talk about what it looks like and how it works. So this idea of having to stick the electrodes on Nathan, but that won’t work because he’s a ghost - you had to come up with all this too. NP: Yeah and hopefully it works, because he’s developing this idea but then we put a much quicker ticking clock on it, so that he doesn’t have a chance to modify the device the way he’d envisioned. And so it has to be taken through to the other side as Audrey ends up doing. [Both of them laughing at Seth with his hands in the air as Audrey reminds him she’s armed.] BM: Congratulations by the way on that classic moment, of wait say that again, what you said just gave me an idea. This one totally works, because of the pose that he does with his arms up, the exact pose that Reggie did before he disappeared. NP: Yeah I tried to cover that moment with some Kris Lemche joking and of course he sold it super well. BM: They both sold it, and that idea that it was the pictures that was making them disappear and that the shadows they left were related to the photos, that was something that we had from the start.
BM: Oh here’s Vince [sneaking into the hospital office]. I always like when we can show Vince and Dave kind of being badasses a little bit, showing off their skills. NP: Everyone knows them as the lore-keepers and protectors of Haven, but you don’t get that job in a place as crazy as Haven by being a softy or being a sweet man who wears pink glasses. You’ve got to be a bad ass and these moments are fun to write for that reason. BM: They are, and we always talk about a Haven prequel series you could do about these guys in the prime of their youth. And they were probably the Nathan and Duke of the town. But they’ve still got it, sometimes, and it’s always a great opportunity when we can have them doing stuff as opposed to just being the librarian-type exposition devices that in previous season they often ended up being, just by necessity because they knew so much. NP: I also find that whenever you can have Richard Donat pull out a Southern accent. BM: He’s also really funny. He doesn’t often get to play as much comedy as John Dunsworth as Dave does. So I like seeing him try and fail at this grifting attempt here. And he gets busted, which was great. And the other actor in this scene is really great too. NP: Yeah we had some great casting in both of these episodes, between Chris Masterson [as Morgan], Kris Lemche [as Seth] and Lara Jean Chorostecki [as Amy Potter]. We both know Lara Jean originally from Hannibal, as investigative journalist Freddie Lounds. That was a role that was gender-swapped from the books for the TV show and she was cast in it and that could not have been a better move on Hannibal’s part. She is just awesome, awesome, awesome in that role. BM: She is terrific. We were totally in her corner from the get go. I think she even just looked like what we imagined the character might look like. But just her energy and everything, we were just like; let’s get her. And so she did it and everyone loved her. And we were like; Can we bring her back? But her Trouble doesn’t really lend itself to something that we could keep using. So we were like; Could we just give her a job in the police station or something? NP: New crime scene photographer? BM: But I think she’s going back to Hannibal, or some other project. We were lucky to get her. NP: We should write a Haven spin off series that’s just Kris Lemche and Lara Jean Chorostecki on the road. They just made people turn into ghosts.
[As we’re back with Duke and Mara again] BM: How much of the bourbon is gone by this point I wonder? NP: They have drunk a lot of Gunslinger Standard, and that is some strong, strong bourbon. BM: But think about his tolerance. I mean, he’s not slurring his speech. I’d be asleep. Or at the very least drooling on myself or something. He’s a cool customer. [They joke that maybe Mara is immune to alcohol as well as the Troubles.] BM: But they did a great job with this. We’ve talked about how well this scene was written but they take it the rest of the way. It’s kind of like passing someone a football - it’s a good pass but then they have to run the rest of the way with it. And they absolutely did. NP: They score a touchdown. Eric really, really killed it here. We do tone calls before each episode to talk through the big scenes, and I just remember the tone call with Eric was so very, very short this time. Because I think he had just really lived in that story and really kind of got a good handle on it. And then once we saw the dailies we were like; Yeah, we didn’t need to say a single word to him. He couldn’t have done a better job with it. Kudos Eric. BM: Yeah, he was like; Totally get it, completely, let me do it.
[As Nathan is searching Guard HQ] NP: Here you can see what we talked about before, the desolate Children of Men, post-apocalyptic look to this warehouse. BM: It’s a little bit of a preview of things to come. I love Nathan going through the wall there. NP: Yeah we had a bunch of these moments, but it was a production question as to how man can we actually afford to do, how many do we have time for. There are some that are critical, like Morgan falling through, and the gun getting knocked away. BM: But there’s none for me that are cooler than Nathan with his gun out going through those two walls. It looks great, the fact it was all just this one swooping camera move. And it’s good from a story stand point because it’s Nathan using his situation to some extent to his advantage. NP: Yep and coming up here we’ve got Audrey doing the same thing of using her situation to her advantage. Right now they’re putting together all of the math of how the Trouble works. She’s understanding that Nathan is in mortal danger, which leads to a big decision for her, to put herself in danger and using her lack of immunity to her advantage in order to be able to save Nathan. BM: Our art department killed it with these photos here. And this is great with Seth being the voice of reason a little bit. And Audrey stepping up - this is a really important moment for her because she’s not immune and that’s been getting to her but now she’s going for it. NP: And credit goes to you for that set up, because it was something that you were really pursuing that her being immune is going to be the story for these episodes. And I think it worked out great. BM: That’s the thing people will refer to these episodes as; Ghost Nathan and then Audrey not being immune. I think the cutting back and forth here [from Audrey and Seth at Amy’s place to Nathan fighting Reggie in Guard HQ], both in the script and by our editor, works so well. The gunshots come [into Reggie’s back] and you don’t know if it’s Audrey, and then you reveal that it’s Morgan. NP: And it’s funny, that kind of action sequence would normally come much later in an episode, but we were trying to keep things so fast here, and really the last couple of acts of this episode take place over the course of minutes. It’s all in real time and it’s really fast, so we were trying to keep it energetic as a result. BM: Pretty much everything this season is real time. Like, last week’s episode happened 25 minutes ago.
BM: It’s funny, we had one real goal going into this episode for what the Vince and Dave story was going to be, and it didn’t really have much to do with this scene [where Vince is caught trying to steal Dave’s biopsy sample from the hospital]. All we knew was that Vince and Dave were going to get a sample of Dave’s leg wound taken, by the CDC as it turns out at the end of the episode. NP: Oh, Dearing Place there [on the note Audrey’s left for Nathan], that’s the street I used to live on. BM: So all of this with Vince and Dave trying to steal the sample back and failing and pretending to be other people, was all sort of invented to make more of a story out of it and it ended up working out really well. It’s fun for those guys, because things have gotten pretty serious for them and they get very serious as the season goes along, so it’s good to give them an opportunity to have fun. NP: Yeah and I was trying to accomplish a lot with that storyline; giving them some playful banter, having them show off their skills and what got them to where they are and the men that they were, and also platforming where they’re going because Dave’s leg wound is getting worse and worse. BM: Yeah, and it’s my favourite kind of B story, or C story really, which is that it has nothing to do with what’s going on in the episode but it’s the last scene in the episode and that story with Charlotte Cross coming to town comes to dominate the entire series. So it seemed like it was just this, tangential something, but it winds up being more significant than anything else in the episode. The best kind of C story there is. NP: I enjoyed this scene as well [Mara and Duke talking in the hold again], this was fun because they’re trying to figure out the math of the Trouble and how it works, and for dramatic, and also story, purposes we needed a delay between when Amy takes the picture and when the person disappears. And so we were trying to figure out how does that work? And because this is a Trouble that has evolved from a painter back in the day, the printing is the completion of the photo. And that just made sense and felt right for us in the digital age. BM: It’s funny I’m not sure when we came up with that idea, it must have been pretty early on. But it solved so many problems. Because we needed there to be a delay, and also a reason why Audrey tries it on herself and it doesn’t work. And I think we were struggling with that at the same time someone else - it might have been Speed Weed because he so frequently bangs the drum of like; Well, this is the Trouble now, but what would the Trouble have been like hundreds of years ago when Mara and William first made them? You know, they didn’t have cameras back then, so how did it work back then geniuses? And we were like; Well, back then it would have been something else. NP: Oil painting. BM: We’ve always liked the idea that they, sort of, not evolve but that a Trouble could mean something different nowadays than it would back then. So we thought well it could have been a painter’s Trouble way back when. Or a sculptor, maybe it left some clay dust. NP: Yeah a splash of paint, or clay dust. BM: And nowadays it leaves this photographic imprint. But before it was when a painting is finished, so when is a picture ever finished, in the world of photoshop, resizing, filters … Well it’s when you print it out. NP: And I think once we found that in our conversations, it was like; Great, perfect - now we know and everything evolved from that. [And they then compare that moment they had to Seth’s kind of triumphant reaction when Audrey disappears.] NP: I think this [as Dave comes to Vince’s rescue with his Garland impersonation] is my favourite of all the Vince and Dave scenes, just because John is so funny here. I remember writing this and I think I went a little bit … BM: We share the same office, Nick’s desk is on another wall, and I could hear you laughing. I had my ear buds in but I could hear you laughing to yourself. And you were writing this scene. NP: I was laughing at myself, which was not cool. BM: But this was one of the few scenes that’s really written specifically for him to play this kind of comedy character and he sunk his teeth into it. NP: He goes fully nuts. I actually ended up cutting the rest of that scene and moving it later. But the interesting thing about this here [as Amy’s getting ready to take a photo of herself] is, there used to be another scene in between where we saw the Morgan side of it. But instead we wanted to delay the mystery of what’s happening in the other room. So we cut that whole scene, and I couldn’t have been happier with that.
[As Amy hugs Morgan] BM: This is where we realised how good Laura Jean was too in the role of Amy, because this was an incredibly hard scene for her. You don’t really think about it, but if you’re the actress that has to play the role; this is impossible: she thought that her fiance was dead and gone until a few minutes ago, and now she’s seen him again, but she’s also processing everything else that’s happening with this situation. She’s got an incredible amount to work though. And she totally did it. NP: Yeah, and she doesn’t get to do it in a lot of lines, because a lot of the exposition of it has to come from the other characters. BM: She was great.
[Both laughing at Dave rescuing Vince] BM: This makes me wish we could have them as con artists more frequently. NP: Yes, they’re good at it. BM: And that was kind of the impetus behind episodes five and six, to get Vince and Dave out of Haven and on a mission. Even if it goes horribly awry.
NP: Laura Jean is really selling it here. She gets two or three words to go through all of this emotion but she really sells it so, so well. BM: Yeah, she’s terrific. I mean I thought she was great in Hannibal, but I really thought she brought something even more to the table here. NP: Well and what’s great about it is, her character in Hannibal is very manipulative, a bit of a psychopath in her own way, she’s very, very cold. But here, she has to be extremely empathetic but also go through really complex emotions super, super fast. And she handles both the Hannibal role, and this much smaller - and probably less rewarding - role both very, very well. BM: She’s very good.
[As we see the final flash that signals the Trouble’s resolved] NP: It’s always tough figuring that exact moment when the Trouble is solved and, how does everyone know. BM: What I also really liked about this is that she kind of solved it herself. NP: We’ve been talking about Lara Jean a lot but Chris [as Morgan] also does an awesome job, escalating this emotion here, getting in Nathan’s face; he’s really selling it. And there’s Seth with the knock-out blow. I just really like his line here [“I am the one who goes bump in the night”]. It is terrible and it was a fun thing to write - and I knew Kris would exactly get the humour of that moment. And in the dailies it was funny, he kept picking up the tripod and saying other ridiculous things; I’m sure it’s going to be all over the blooper reel because he was just hilarious. BM: It was originally going to be a picture frame that Seth used to knock Morgan out, but I think there was concern that we could have seriously injured Chris Masterson, so it became a tripod. But his line there is an obvious reference to Walter White’s “I am the one who knocks” line which is just one of the best lines ever in television. This being of course one of the worst lines ever in television.
[As Seth is saying goodbye to Nathan and Audrey] BM: So this scene here ended up touching on maybe a bit of a touchy subject for Audrey and Nathan, which was brought in relief with what Morgan said earlier about; Why are you the only ones who get to be happy? So they’re starting to ask themselves if Morgan was right and if they’ve been selfish - because, she got Nathan back, but at what cost to Morgan? NP: And it’s been going for a while too, since season four - they keep fighting for each other so much, and what is the cost? BM: I think it’s an important thing, a realistic conversation for them to have. Granted of course it’s not just Nathan; they’ve just saved a bunch of people around town who were also ghosts. And Morgan’s a bad guy, and Nathan can do a lot of good, as a human being, not a ghost. NP: It’s funny, the tail end of that scene changed a lot because as we were getting closer to it, it became more and more clear that we were going to want to bring Kris back as Seth again for more episodes in the back half of season 5b. So before he was like; I’m getting out of Haven, goodbye forever, kind of thing. And then it softened and softened. BM: Yeah we left the door open because at this point we knew we were going to bring him back, but we didn’t know if he was going to be a surprise new resident of Haven, or if we were going to have them be like; Hey man, come back to Haven. So we had to be super vague about where he was going.
[As we’re back with Mara and Duke again] BM: So they’re probably on a second bottle at this point, right? NP: They are fully drunk. BM: I would be on the phone with a hospital [if I had drunk that much] NP: A hospital or an ex-girlfriend, one of the two. [As Mara is talking about the importance of intention when releasing a Trouble] This also is something that was in the works from the very beginning, what we always knew we wanted to accomplish was Mara saying; You were the one who was in the driver’s seat when you split me and Audrey, this was your Trouble you were expressing. And over the course of those episodes he’s probably learned better how to express them and she’s saying here that; You want me here - why? BM: And it kind of answers a question that was posed at the beginning of 5.07, which was - how did this happen? Why did this happen? Duke was flicking through the Crocker Journal but he had no idea. And then Mara poses a theory here which is that he selects the Trouble that he wants to, whether he knows it or not, and that he maybe wanted to split Audrey and Mara apart. NP: Yep. BM: And I love it, it’s great.
[The final scene with Vince and Dave outside the Gull] NP: Of course they drink drinks with little umbrellas. BM: It’s not exactly a sunny day outside either. NP: Well it was funny, for production we didn’t have a Grey Gull day. BM: This moved tons of times. NP: Moved a bunch of times; I re-wrote this scene probably half a dozen times. BM: It was going to be outside the Haven Herald at one point, or just on some patio somewhere, some place they could shoot in town. But in the end we shot this weeks later, right? NP: Yeah, Shawn picked it up with a second unit some time. BM: But from back in the beginning of the year when we started mapping out what are the big tent poles for every season, this was always the last scene of this episode; Charlotte Cross comes to town. Because that really kicks off what is the rest of the season; it’s really the main story for the next couple episodes. NP: I thought the art department did a great job with the CDC logo. You can’t use the actual CDC logo; every show that uses CDC has to come up with their own logo, and our art department is really good with those kinds of things. BM: Yes. Shout out to Laura Mennell as well, as Charlotte Cross. We were really lucky to get her. NP: She’s so good. BM: She ends up joining the cast as a regular and I think we’re better for it. She obviously has some big surprises to come, which I guess we can’t talk about now. NP: It’s funny, we’re kind of the book ends for her character; introduced and then …. BM: Oh that’s right, well we can’t say. But this was a great episode. Thanks Nick! NP: Thanks for watching y’all.

The Gold Saucer’s Golden Arches by belderiver
Before he doomed the world to ash and ruin, Sephiroth wanted a burger.
note: Sephiroth + sudden hunger pang = mcgold
Meetings by Yinza
Aeris reflects on her few encounters with Sephiroth over the years since her escape from the lab.
note: Aerith having known Sephiroth before is just one of my favorite headcanons
lather, rinse, repeat by annperkinsface
She knows she shouldn't confuse this act of kindness for anything else, but it's hard, when Aerith is draping a towel over her shoulders, when Aerith is warm at her back, humming as she works a thick lather across her hands.
note: adorable Aerti. Aerith being a weirdo. Tifa blushing and being kinda horny. perfect. in case you couldn’t tell I ship it.
In Circles by Larissa
Tifa hates Midgar, and yet she stays, and she stays, and she stays.
Character study/pre-game gap-filler. Written for the Tifa Zine.
note: beautiful mood piece
the nodding golden tansy by Kieron_ODuibhir
“You think this troubles me?”
“Yes,” said Cloud, without looking up from his tea.
note: one of my fave takes on Seph and Cloud’s relationship. wonderfully quiet and melancholy.
not one before another by Kieron_ODuibhir
1) Sephiroth almost corrected the first person who called Aerith his sister, a woman they’d met before they were even out of Midgar’s slums complimenting him on taking such good care of her, while their mother shopped.
2) The other half of Project S took after their father.
3) Blue eyes contemplated him narrowly for several seconds, and then Genesis’ smirk came back, lying on his face more easily, somehow. “So brothers-in-arms to the skirmish shall we hence?”
4) It felt wrong to be relying on anybody but Mother, but Mother…only cared about Sephiroth, and it wasn’t fair. Loz sniffled. “Will she take care of Yazoo, too?”
5) “I’m glad he’ll have a big brother,” she said, as Sephiroth crossed the room. “Little ones always need someone looking out for them.”
Sephiroth nodded, and bent forward, and peered at the squashed little pink thing until it stirred, objecting probably to cool air on its face. “What’s his name?”
“Cloud."
(Five times in five worlds where Sephiroth was somebody's brother, and one where he wasn't anymore.)
note: exactly what it sounds like. personal fave is 4.
Angels Still Have Faces by Kieron_ODuibhir
On the fourth day, Sephiroth looked out a window and spotted his two friends together on one of the outdoor training fields, once again exchanging harsh words, only for Angeal to wheel around and storm off at the end.
note: fics where someone other than the main character time-travels are amazing and this is that and also outsider pov mother bear Sephiroth who doesn’t know what pizza is
Final Fantasy IX

Final Fantasy XV
ffucc the wedding by Givethemtriumphnow
Gift for Victortor, inspired by their fabulous ffucc Universe.
Noctis and Luna are the same person, one soul split into two bodies.
In a world where everyone lives and nothing hurts, the wedding is still a symbol of the peace, and the show must go on. Noct and Luna just can’t wait for what comes afterwards: the Big Reveal.
note: I just really like the one person two body trope okay? pretty entertaining read!
Poor Wayfaring Stranger by lithos_saeculum
Out on a mission, Cor Leonis finds a teenager, lost and sick and partway to becoming an MT. Against the advice of all and sundry, he brings him back to Insomnia. There's not a lot of love lost for MTs in the Citadel, but some of its inhabitants may still be young enough to put aside their prejudices.
note: also on my list of likes is MT Prompto trope, and honestly fuck canon that’s just there for inspiration. TW for implied pedophilia and stranger danger in one of the later chapters.
Will You Be There, Standing at the End of the War by Adel Mortescryche (Mortescryche)
When they're attacked by the Imperial Forces at Tenebrae, Regis wasn't prepared to be rescued alongside Noctis, Lunafreya and Ravus by the Commanding General of the enemy forces. Not after the man already cut Sylva down before them.
He was even less prepared for the face lying in wait behind the mask.
He dropped down to one knee, and rather pointedly cupped the left side of Drautos’ head, delicate, making no move to actually hide the fury raging through him.
“Talk, Titus.” Regis whispered. “Before I take this airship down from the sky.”
note: Drautos time-travels and is an absolute bastard. I like seeing his and Regis’s exchanges!
For Want of a Flan by magicgenetek
For want of some patience, Ifrit never freed Ardyn from Angelgard to rebel against the Astrals.
For want of Ardyn, Nifleheim never invented MT Troopers.
For want of MT Troopers, Lunafreya and Ravus were able to escape with Regis, and Nifleheim never cornered Lucis in their war.
For want of a kidnapping, Luna, Noctis and Prompto were able to work together to get ready for the prophecy, and Ravus is ready to suplex an Astral to make sure someone survives the prophecy.
For want of separation, the four of them go to Angelgard to figure out what secrets lay there, and accidentally adopt Ardyn into their plans to save the world.
For want of 2000 years’ prep time, Ardyn’s going to have to get up to speed on the modern world fast if he wants revenge or to fulfill his half of the prophecy.
note: has a good deal of worldbuilding and linguistics nerdery. I like that. I also like the recovery element of Ardyn’s arc.
A Little More Time by Asidian
The sun is brilliant overhead – set in a blue sky dotted with clouds that float like wisps of spun sugar through the high arc of the heavens.
It's more than lovely. It's entrancing, and Noctis takes one long, final look before he turns his gaze back earthward. His vision dances with sunspots for a moment, afterimages from the blinding light – but when it clears, Noctis sees a small black dog there, patient and watchful as always.
Umbra has been waiting.
"Alright," Noctis says. "We're ready to go back."
note: short, punchy, and absolutely chilling
Eschaton by nirejseki
Sure, it's the end of the world, but that just means someone's got to fix it.
And then the world found its somebodies.
(aka, with Noctis gone into the Crystal and no one sure when he'll be back, Ignis, Gladio, and Prompto end up saving the world one piece at a time)
note: I like worldbuilding and MTs alright? and schoolteacher Gladio will never not be funny/great
Astra Inclinant by thekindmagic
“Look,” Aranea laughs, shaking her head. “I’m not trying to shit on your destiny. But the way I see it? A lot of the time, there’s no big mystery. You either keep going, or you don’t.”
note: how could I not rec femslash? beautiful melancholy mood. I’m so sad for Luna
Starlight and Shadow by ohmyfae
While Noctis and his friends are setting up camp, Ardyn Izunia happens to accidentally stumble onto the runes of their haven. The magic of the haven pulls him into two halves; One is Ardyn, a small child with a bit of an ego and a limited knowledge of the world at large, and the other is the Scourge, shambling and groundless, determined to seek out its former host and consume the light it finds there.
note: fun read!
On the Care and Keeping of Prompto by ohmyfae
Congratulations! You have been chosen to ensure the well-being of PROMPTO, who is: 1. An absolute darling. 2. Of more intrinsic value than you, your significant other, your ancestors, and the world at large. 3. Two years and four months old 3a. This is very important to remember 4. Behind you.
note: also a very fun and fluffy read! also the fic that introduced me to the amazing crackship of Ardyn and Cor, and I say crackship but... I want more of it
Kingdom Hearts
The Price of Melodrama by LawnNinja
Xemnas never imagined that one of the hardest parts of his plan would be the stupid names.

(i don’t need you to) Worry for Me by Cygna_hime
In a fit of defiance and desperation, Vanitas disobeys his Master's orders and goes looking for the missing half of his heart. He finds it, and something else as well, something he never expected to find anywhere...
note: I absolutely love this I’ve read this like... 3 or 4 times? go read it now
Bleeding Heart by keelahselai
Xemnas was fundamentally a bad person. Born from the fracture of Xehanort's heart, he had only caused pain to those he banded together with under the promise of finding a way to return all their hearts. He shattered the Organization he'd founded for his own gain, and he understood this with cool indifference. But beneath everything, carefully kept folded away and hidden from Xigbar's prying eye, he was also made from the other inhabitant of Apprentice Xehanort's body. And as troubling as it could be to their plan, he kept it hidden from all.
(Or, how Terra managed to keep his head above the water for thirteen years)
note: I absolutely love the.. I don’t know what it’s called, but let’s say Terramas even though that sounds like a ship name... I absolutely love that trope. this one has such just a great mood y’know?
By Choice or Chance by Six_Piece_Chicken_McNobody
Lazy afternoons are a universal phenomenon.
note: I just love Xehaqus’s tragedy. this is nice, fluffy, and one of them is going to murder the other in his own selfish lust for power. (I know III said Xehanort had other motivations but I just love the “he’s such an utter bastard that all his relationships are going to end disastrously” interpretation)
Whatever Will Be by NanakiBH
Once I tell you the words I've been unable to say, it will be goodbye.
note: more explicitly melancholy mood than last one, still great.

TerraMythos' 2020 Reading Challenge - Book 3 of 26
Tumblr media
Title: Shriek: An Afterword (Ambergris #2) (2006)
Author: Jeff VanderMeer
Genre/Tags: Weird, Memoir, Historical (like... in a fictional world lol), Horror, Fantasy, War, Mushroompunk (yeah), Postmodern, Female Protagonist, Disabled Protagonist, First Person, Unreliable Narrator.
Rating: 7/10
Date Began: 1/19/2020
Date Finished: 1/29/2020
Shriek: An Afterword is a pseudo-memoir by a woman named Janice Shriek about the troubled lives and relationships of her and her brother Duncan Shriek in the strange, fungus-riddled city of Ambergris. While Janice believes Duncan is dead, he's apparently found her manuscript and makes extensive edits and commentary throughout the story. (This is indicated in parenthetical sentences, like this one.)
The closer I get to the end, the closer I get to the beginning. Memories waft up out of the ether, out of nothing. They attach themselves to me like the green light, like the fungi that continue to colonize my typewriter. I had to stop for a while -- my fingers ached and, even after all that I have seen, the fungi unnerved me. I spent the time flexing and unflexing my fingers, pacing back and forth. I also spent it going through a box of my father’s old papers -- nothing I haven’t read through a hundred times before... On top, Duncan had placed the dried-up starfish, its skeleton brittle with age. (I kept it there as a reminder to myself. After your letter to me -- which, while reading this account, I sometimes think was written by an entirely different side of your personality -- I wanted to remember that no matter how isolated I might feel, separated from others by secret knowledge, I was still connected. It didn’t help much, though -- it reminded me of how different I had become.)
To qualify my rating, I have to be honest. This book is officially separated into two parts, and I found Part I -- which makes up about 60% of the novel -- pretty boring. On the other hand, Part II is brilliant, and everything coalesces beautifully in this second act. Is it worth it? I thought it was, but I understand anyone who tries and gives up.
Even though Shriek is technically a standalone, I would strongly recommend you read City of Saints and Madmen (#1) first. Both Duncan and Janice are key characters in two of those stories (The Hoegbotton Guide to the Early History of Ambergris and The Transformation of Martin Lake, respectively), and there are references and connections all over the place. I’m not sure if Shriek does a great job introducing Ambergris to new readers, so people starting here will be pretty lost without reading the first book.
Just to clear the air, I really liked this book... overall. As I said, the first half-or-so of the book was pretty rough, but the second half redeems it in a lot of ways, even justifying certain writing/plot decisions that didn’t gel with me at first. However “it gets good eventually” is not really an excuse for the rough first half. Hence the mediocre rating. I was close to giving this book a 6/10, but I found that I appreciated the first half much more by the time I got to the ending, so that bumped it up a little. Maybe I’ll enjoy this book more on a reread when I can see the patterns and know where they’re leading ahead of time.
Before I dive into my issues with it, I’d like to discuss the strong points of this novel.
At a base level, VanderMeer is a great writer. He has a mastery of the English language that always delights me when I read his stuff. So even when I struggled to like this story in the first half, his wordplay and prose were entertaining and thought-provoking.
I loved the format. The story basically has two protagonists, since you see things from Janice’s point of view and then Duncan’s interpretations-- but it’s in a very postmodern way, not just a perspective switch like most novels do. Duncan’s commentary often brings much needed humor or heartbreak, depending on the situation.
In particular, any scene in which Janice and Duncan interact directly is brilliant. Janice recalls a scene, but her memory is faulty (like anyone’s), so sometimes she forgets what they talked about, or interpreted an interaction in a certain way. Then Duncan dives in with his own commentary, supplying information Janice didn’t include or forgot, or correcting something she said, or offering an alternate interpretation... these scenes were fascinating to read and some of my favorite parts of the novel.
There’s a lot of fun revelations and Easter eggs for people who read City of Saints and Madmen. In particular:
My favorite story in the first book was The Cage, which is a work of fiction  within the universe of Ambergris by a man named Sirin. In particular there is a very creepy and distinct monster that plays a pivotal role in the story. However, since it’s technically fiction within fiction, that monster and the events didn’t really happen in canon... right? Imagine my surprise in this book when Janice encounters and describes a very similar monster. This struck me as odd, until I got to epilogue/afterword at the end... written by Sirin, and everything clicked. He got the idea for his “fictional” monster from Janice’s account in this story. He doesn’t state this outright, but it’s the only explanation that makes sense. I loved that. It was like putting a puzzle together and it would have been so easy to miss. And there’s the extra horror that something like that really exists in this world. There was other stuff like this but this one stood out to me, and I’m sure there’s other things I missed.
This mostly concerns the second half, but the war sequences and memories are horrific and brilliant. It's very World War II-esque with a unique twist to it (the awful fungal bio weapons one of the sides uses). In particular, the war is introduced with a chapter about a ceasefire opera staged in the broken city... without spoiling it, it’s an excellent and intriguing self-contained story.
And the horror chapter about the Festival, which is conspicuously absent in the rest of the story? Just so goddamn good. VanderMeer strikes just the right chord with me when it comes to horror. It’s always fresh and intensely creepy.
If you told me this during the first half, I wouldn’t believe you -- but I ended up loving the characters and finding most of their relationships fascinating. This is a heartbreaking story and it really hit home by the end.
With that lofty praise, what’s my issue with Part I? The simplest way I can put it is that the struggles Duncan and Janice face are so mundane. They would maybe be interesting in a generic work of fiction, but here they felt out of place. For example, Janice’s arc concerns her rise to fame, which leads to success, which leads to lavish parties and orgies, which leads to excesses and a drug addiction, which leads to a suicide attempt, which leads to rehab, which leads to a diminished life of poverty. Yes, these can be interesting and harrowing problems in the right context, but the strongest point of these books is the setting, and there was nothing that tied these events to Ambergris. You could easily go through and change the character/place names and it wouldn’t seem off.
Duncan is a little more interesting in this regard, because his is a story of obsession. In particular, he’s obsessed with the gray caps (strange humanoid mushroom creatures that haunt the pages of these books), and it takes over his life until he becomes totally discredited as a historian. But even he falls into this trap when he becomes a college professor and has an affair with one of his much younger students (Yikes! Though it is treated as creepy within the story, at least). That takes over most of his character’s emotional core from that point.
Said student -- Mary Sabon -- is a core antagonist in the story. Janice in particular obsesses over her and her personal vendetta against her, and honestly even with the second part I was never really sold on this or cared about it all that much, so I was disappointed it took up so much of the story.
All of this would be one thing, but there’s all sorts of tantalizing hints about more interesting things. The gray caps probably have some ulterior motive that no one knows! There’s this crazy eldritch Machine hidden underground! Duncan is sort of turning into a mushroom! But these are only teased before the story pivots back to something comparatively uninteresting. Rather than encouraging me with the cool foreshadowing, it just got grating because it meant there were more interesting events and stories going on that I didn’t get to see for some arbitrary reason. Janice also rambles and goes back and forth quite a bit. This is clearly intentional (after all, you learn in the end this is a mostly unedited draft -- at least in the fiction of the story), but even so, it can be hard to follow at times.
Part II justifies a lot of this because these hints do pay off. You DO get to see a lot of the interesting stuff in detail at this later point of the story, and it’s not always what you expect. There’s overt and subtle dramatic irony and contrast between what characters go through in the first half versus the stranger, more profound traumas of the second half. You learn Janice is suffering from some severe PTSD and it explains a lot of the manic style in the first half. But again, is it worth 245-ish mediocre (to me) pages? I think that probably depends on the reader. I had a problem with it-- but clearly a lot of people don’t, based on reviews I’ve skimmed. Many put the book down and don’t finish it, but that’s true for any book. Hell, lots of people preferred the first half, so who knows.
Ultimately, I’m glad I read this book. For me it really does come together in an amazing way toward the end, and I found myself really caring about Janice and Duncan. If you read City of Saints and Madmen and want more of the characters and the world, then definitely give this a try. But it is a pretty niche book as these things go, so I can’t recommend it to everyone.
Anyway, I’ve come this far -- so I’m going to read Finch, the final (for now?) installment in this universe.
