Dating Augustus Hill would include…

Augustus is a logical man, he’s not really a love at first sight guy. He’s a love at first words guy. When you talk and he can’t get your voice out of his head like some hymn he heard in church when he was five.

He’s guarded, naturally. Kinda shit he’s been through and he’d have to be.

You’re nice enough, he guesses. Not really sure if he’s your type. But he really noticed you when you’re discussing solitary conditions in Oz. The power in your voice. The disgust at the treatments.

He gets the feeling you care deeply about a great many things and then realizes he wants to be one of them. 🥹

A/N: He’s not like many of the other guys in Oz that I write. He’s got the heart of the gentler ones and the confidence of the crazy ones.

He rolls up next to you, asking if you have time to talk later.

“Like a date?” -you tease

“Well, yeah.” -Augustus, probably

He’s smooth. Comes with the territory of having the only two brain cells in Oz at all times.

Calls himself King of the Dipshits

You meet at the mall. He calls it the center of capitalist imperialism. (Sploosh)

Nonetheless, his mother raised a gentleman so he buys you a slushie or something.

Big fan of struggle meals. Just tastes the love in them. Hates when they’re hipsterized. Don’t add avocado or chia seeds or some shit. Just give him his unhealthy Mac n cheese and top ramen.

He’s got opinions, lots of them. And so do you. You both think the other’s are HOT. 🥵

“So why haven’t you been snatched up yet?”

“Are you volunteering?”

“That’s a life sentence I wouldn’t mind serving.”😘

Damn. He’s almost too smooth.

He seems honest, but there’s also something he’s always trying not to say. You don’t really see him with his guard completely down until he talks about his mom.

“She was a… she was a good woman. Kind eyes, and all.”

“I imagine you miss her a lot. I just… don’t think she’d want you to think of it that way. Being grateful for the time had.” You think for a second and add, “Hope that wasn’t an overstep.”

“I think it was. But the kind my mom would have called ballsy.” He informs with a small smile.

He’s always got the words for every situation and every feeling. He’s almost too smart for his own good.

By the end of your first date, you’re talking about the loneliness and futility of the human experience. Leaving no stone unturned.

“What’s something you’ve never done before? Something you’ve always wanted to do?”

“Fly.” You respond sarcastically, giggling a little at his expression. He’s only off guard for a half a second.

“Next date.”

He takes you up to the top of the e Empire State Building. Takes the wheelchair access ramp. Talks about how everyone treats him like he’s on make a wish or something so getting in wasn’t that hard.

He walks you up to the edge, and then gestures for you to sit on his lap. You oblige, blushing all the way.

“Ok, now sit up, close your eyes, and lean forward.”

“Lean forward? The rails-“

“I got you.” 🔥Was all he said in response.

You do what he says, exactly as he says it. A gust of wind comes by and pushes you off balance. You panic for a second before feeling two strong hands on your sides.

“Don’t worry. I got you.”

The wind is whooshing across your face, your arms are out, eyes closed, feeling like you’re flying over the whole city. 🌬️

It’s exhilarating.

After a few minutes, you open your eyes and he lowers your body down on his, until you’re cuddling him with your arm around him.

He takes you around his old neighborhood. He knows all the good spots. One of his favorites is a hot dog place on the corner. Hot dogs for one dollar and he gets it with all the fixings. You try it and it’s pretty damn good.

“Andre. Best dogs in town. Just gotta know where to look.”😉

Watches Mystery Science Theatre 3000 when he’s feeling down. Normally people who talk during movies piss him off but something about these guys is so nice. Reminds him of when Burr used to make fun of old Gunsmoke reruns on TV when he was a kid.

He’s got a favorite coffee shop. (DESPISES Starbucks; calls them coffee for people who hate coffee). His favorite is in the projects. Melody Market Coffee. Takes his black but won’t judge if you add anything to yours.

(Though he judges Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Fuck you, Augustus, it’s a milkshake midday, what’s not to love?)

Gets excited to do guerilla work with you. You ask if that would be a little much for him… and regret it immediately.

“Because of the chair? Honey, I’m like a greased up seal in this baby.”

And he’s not lying. You tag a Walmart with “Capitalist Pigs” and he’s out of there before you are!

You go to a lot of locations dubbed by others as “seedy”. Augustus just wants you to know the “world under the world”.

“It’s like, for everything you see, real life is just below that, and much more lurking below the surface. The 99%… were like an iceberg.”☺️

He’s a little too serious for frivolous things. Can’t really turn off his brain doing anything. It annoys you sometimes, but you know you’d rather him remarkably aware than remarkably dull.

Makes love like a beast. You doubt his abilities at first, and then you never do again.

His hands guide you into the bed, then lifts himself from his chair right next to you. His upper body strength is a force to be reckoned with. He pins you down, working himself on top of you, planting kisses on your neck and chest. It’s an otherworldly experience.

You’re sitting on the bed afterwards, both with a cigarette in hand.

“…wow.” 🤯

“Yeah.” ��

“I mean just… wow.”😧

When he says “for her”, in the first season to Adebisi he did not fucking stutter.

You’re the goofy one in the relationship. He wakes up one morning to find that you’ve put baseball cards in his spokes. He asks why and you’re like; “kids do this on their bikes to make noises when they go fast. You’re basically turbo in this thing.”😂

Your big date every week is breakfast for dinner on Thursdays. He’ll talk your ear off about how “breakfast foods don’t exist” and that Kellogg created the idea of a “balanced breakfast” in the fifties to market their product.

You don’t care. You’re having pancakes for dinner. 🥞 ❤️

His favorite movies are think pieces. Loves A Serious Man (2008) and Sorry to Bother You (2018).

“So… the guy’s a horse now?”

“Yeah, but that’s not really what it means.”

“But… he is a horse now, right?”

“*sigh* sure.”

Your favorite pastimes are being so cute that he can’t be upset. He’ll come home after a rough day, pop open a beer, watch a game that’s on, and you’ll just come in the room, dressed in a Ninja Turtle Onzie and just sit next to him without mentioning it.

He’ll try to ignore you, stay in his bad mood and all that, but you start singing “Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” under your breath.

You turn to see he has his head in his hands. Maybe you shouldn’t have been goofy today?

His head pops up and he’s been laughing silently for a solid minute. You pretend you don’t know what he’s talking about.

“My man has a bad day, I come in here looking all sexy, trying to cheer him up, and this is the thanks I get.”🤪

You get HAMMERED on night, and he’s working late so you start sending him all these pictures of you (some NSFW) asking him to come home.

You make a soap opera with one of your stuffed animals. You grab the stuffed bunny off the bed, and film a 40 part series with cheating and betrayals and twins.

You wake up the next day, feeling Agustus’s hands on your waist. You feel like crap, and lean over the bed to throw up. All you hear is a low chuckle, and a;

“Good morning, bunny.”🐰

He calls you Bunny after that.

You ALWAYS leave him the cross word puzzle in the mornings.

“Beatles song, clue; animal that eats trash. 12 spaces.”

“Rocky Raccoon.”

“You made that up.”

“So totally didn’t. Look it up.”

*searches on his phone* “seriously?”

Is very, very sarcastic.

“How are we getting home, love?”

“Tandem bike. But only because the Bat Mobile is in the shop.”

“Fuck you.”❤️

Loves long walks and hearing street music.

Heard a guy on the street play the violin and he makes you stop where you are and listen to the whole song, people filing in behind and around you. But you stop a moment in time and spend it together.

You get friendly with Burr. He’s a little stand offish at first, but when it’s clear you’re not going to hurt him like his Ex Annabella, he starts treating you right.

He just slides you a coffee one morning.

You’re about to ask why and he just asks without looking up at you:

“Chemical produced by goldfish. Clue; reason you have to clean the tank so often. Seven letters.”

“…ammonia.”

He grins slightly behind the newspaper. Yeah, you’d be alright for Agustus.

He likes to sleep with the window open. Most people can’t sleep in the city and he can’t sleep without it.

You decorate his apartment. He’s livid at first.

“You filled my apartment with useless corporate crap.”

“Actually, I filled your apartment with second hand goods from local garage sales and farmer’s markets. And anything I bought online I bought while planting a tree in the Amazon.”

He genuinely can’t be upset. The apartment looks less like a socialist hole up and more like a home.

The little bust of Edgar Allen Poe’s raven was a nice touch. 🐦‍⬛

You always get him fun treats from the farmer’s market when you go. It becomes about getting the most outlandish thing.

Squirrel jerky. Onion jam. Can sugar juice. (I’m from the south, yall we got all of this.)

He gets excited now when you come home from one.

He decided he loved you a while ago. But he knows that what’s most important is how he tells you.

So he makes a night of it. Roses that he picked fresh for you. A small bottle of champagne. He even dresses up in his nice suit for you.

“Mm, what’s the occasion, handsome?”

He sits you down next to him.

“It’s that I decided that I wanted to tell the most wonderful person in the world that I love them. That they make my life better in every possible way. That they’ve become my sunrise. As much of a reason to get up in the morning as the light. I love you, Y/N.”

“I love you too, Auggie.”

You two do puzzles together. He collects them, and superglued them to hang on his walls.

That’s how he asks to marry you. He gets a custom puzzle made, and you two build it together.

“Start with the edges. You always start with the edges.”

“No, you start with the words if there are any. This one looks like it has a few words…”

You build the words first, much to his chagrin, and get excited when you get three.

“See? What did I tell you? It says ��Will you marry’. So the last word must be… I mean it must be… Auggie?”

He’s palming his head. You were supposed to do the edges first. You turn to see him smirking. He reaches into his chair and pulls out a ring.

It’s a lab grown diamond on a reclaimed silver band. Very Augustus.

You get married at town hall, and go straight back to your place for the honeymoon.

You’re chilling on the couch, Agustus running your hand gently as he admires his ring on you.

“Love you, bunny.”

“Love you too, Auggie.”❤️

Bonus: loves South Park. His favorite character is Kyle. Yours is Wendy. You agree they would be a much better pairing than Stan and Wendy.

“Chia-chan? Mama’s always telling you, aren't I? XX-chan is XX-chan, and Chia-chan is Chia-chan, right? Other people are other people, aren't they? And you’re you, aren't you?”

Mama was angry; Chia-chan understood that. Chia-chan was Chia-chan after all. She wouldn't mention it anymore. If she did, Mama would get mad. We shouldn't compare with other people’s children, she’d say. Chia-chan is Chia-chan. Other people’s children were different.

Mama’s precious Chia-chan. Chia-chan was special. She, and she alone. Chia-chan was precious. More important than anything, and anyone; Mama’s child.

“What should we do this summer vacation, Chia-chan? Apparently XX-chan’s family is going to Hawai’i. XX-chan’s Mama said they went to Saipan for New Years, didn't she? Papa can't take time off work. Papa’s always like that. I saw XX at the class reunion for the first time in a while, and they said they were building a house. A detached house. You wouldn't want to live in an apartment forever, huh? So what should we do for summer vacation?”

Chia-chan was fine with anywhere. For summer break, and winter break, and spring break. They should just do what Mama wanted to do. Piano too, and ballet, and English conversational classes, and swimming, and cram school; those were all decided by Mama as well. If Chia-chan said she didn't want to go, Mama would surely become furious.

“Whose sake do you think this is for? Chia-chan? It’s for your own sake, isn't it?”

Chia-chan had wanted to try calligraphy. Who was it again? Someone had trained it, and gotten good penmanship, and I’d been envious, and asked Mama about it, but she’d gotten angry.

“ XX-chan is XX-chan, and Chia-chan is Chia-chan, right? Other people are other people, aren't they? And you’re you, aren't you? Mama’s always telling you, aren't I? Why don't you understand? Chia-chan!”

I’m at fault, for not understanding.

Other people are other people, and I am myself.

The things Mama decided were for Chia-chan’s sake.

Chia-chan was precious to Mama after all.

Because Chia-chan was Mama’s special girl.

But you know, Mama, Chia-chan’s crap at piano and ballet, anyway. I just get scolded by Mama all the time, anyway. English isn't fun at all. Swimming is just tiring, and a huge pain. Mama had snapped and yelled, “Then just quit! What a waste of money!”, so I’d quit in the end after all. I was scared of Mama getting angry if my grades dropped, so I’d gone to cram school, but it wasn't like I really wanted to go, though.

“It’s alright. Because Chia-chan is Chia-chan. Chia-chan should just be Chia-chan. Mama loves Chia-chan just as she is. Ok? Understand, Chia-chan?”

When did it start again?

She would definitely get mad at me.

Somehow, whenever I got called “Chia-chan” by Mama, you know? My whole body would get uncomfortable. It became hard to breathe, you know? It would feel bad, you know? I don't want to make Mama mad, so I would never say it, though. After all, Mama loves the phrase “Chia-chan”, and she loves “Chia-chan” as well. But you know, that might just be the case, you see.

That the one Mama loves is not me, but Mama’s beloved “Chia-chan”. ¹

Whether it’s piano, or ballet, or English conversational classes, or swimming. I’m glad I didn't quit. Because Mama wanted me to do them. If I didn't do as Mama said, I would no longer be “Chia-chan”; she would hate me. Wanting something was not allowed. “Chia-chan” would not make Mama angry.

After getting to middle school, a lot of kids had smartphones, and I wanted one as well. I wanted it, wanted it, wanted it so bad. I couldn't stand it, but I was scared of making Mama mad if I asked for one. So I went all out pestering Papa about it, and got him to buy one.

After that, Mama and Papa had a huge fight. Mama screamed late into the night.

“You haven't even bought a single ring for me, and you get your daughter anything she asks for! What am I to you? How much do you think I’ve sacrificed for you and our daughter!”

I pretended I couldn't hear it. Ah ah ah ah ah aah ah aaah I can't hear anything I can't hear I can't hear I can't hear ah ah aah I can't hear I can't hear I can not hear ah ah ah—

Mama is scary when she gets angry. I can't make her angry. When she isn't angry she’s kind. Everyone praises Mama. Mama gives off a friendly outward appearance—no, impression. When “Chia-chan” was in elementary school, she frequented PTA events. She has loads of friends too. Papa’s parents, grandpa and grandma, also side with Mama more than Papa. And Mama is willing to love “Chia-chan”, anyway. She is “Chia-chan’s” mother after all.

Maybe I’m to blame. Maybe it’s all my fault. I don't have as friendly of an impression as Mama—I mean, I’m not a kind person, after all. If I don't get into the zone, I can't even smile. I always compare myself with the kids around me. And I don't have that many friends either. I was secretly venting my dark thoughts in SNS too. If I didn't, it was so painful, so painful, so painful, so painful, I couldn't bear it.

If I keep this up, I’ll no longer be “Chia-chan”, and Mama might come to hate me.

Even though I was trying so hard. I told my friends they could “tell me anything”. I was willing to accept anything that came my way. If there was something I wanted, I would endure it. I was doing as Mama told, as much as possible. I was being careful so Mama wouldn't get mad—so I wouldn't make her mad. And even though my skin crawled when Mama called me “Chia-chan”, I still responded, “Yes, Mama?” with a smile. I was doing my best.

When I vented, there were people encouraging me on SNS, and I was pretty encouraged by them too. They would say I wasn't at fault, but it really was my fault, after all.

That must be it, huh?

If only I could stay myself, and remain the “Chia-chan” that Mama loved so much. I know. I know that Nagisa, and Yoriko, and Miyuki too, they don't really like me that much. After looking at SNS, I understood that people had hidden sides to them. After all, Mama was like that too. I wasn't really “Chia-chan” either. It would be nice if I could become Mama’s beloved “Chia-chan”, but I can't be anyone but myself; Chiami is Chiami after all.

I’m working so hard, so why doesn't anyone like me?

“Look for your true self!”

Someone wrote that on SNS.

“Search for yourself!”, “Try to find your own self!”

To do that, they said, I just had to ask myself. What am I? Who am I? What do I want to do? What do I want to become? What do I want?

“Chia-chan”

Mama, please don't call me “Chia-chan”. But I don't want Mama to hate me. Mama, please keep liking me. Because I love you, Mama. Nagisa too, and Yoriko, and Miyuki, please keep liking me. (Brief aside; this got WAY longer than I was anticipating LMAO)

I am not vegan or vegetarian but I do believe in their beliefs am an adventurous eater and will never say no to vegan/vegetarian alternatives to typically-animal-product ingredients and dishes. Also, I am first and foremost a texture eater, so if the texture is bad or not what I am expecting, I don’t like it even if the flavor is fine. If that’s also important to you, keep that in mind with my recommendations below lmao

What I’m about to post here are mainly things that are useful when cooking at home. Your experiences at restaurants will vary—if you’re going out to eat with someone with any dietary restrictions, not just vegans/vegetarians but also those who have allergies, are gluten-free, eat kosher, halal, or have some other restriction be it religious or health related or simply personal, just fuckin’ ask them what places/cuisines/etc are going to be good spots for them to eat. It’s literally just as simple as “do you prefer Italian or Chinese?” Just ask.

ANYWAY! On to alternatives.

Food science is crazy these days and we have so many cool new substitutions for meat products these days it’s insane. You don’t have to rely purely on tofu and beans anymore.

Impossible meat

As an enjoyer of meat, Impossible brand burgers and ground “beef” are quite literally impossible for me to tell apart from real beef in most applications. Yeah, you’re not going to get the same medium rare experience if you’re grilling specialty burgers at home, but if you’re more of a smash burger or well done fan, they’re just as good as the real thing. The one application I have had some trouble executing well is meatballs. Something about the way real ground meat holds together in my typical 1lb ground meat/1/2 cup bread crumbs/2 eggs recipe tends to make a somewhat crumbly mess with Impossible meat. I haven’t experimented with this in a while, but if eggs are acceptable in your recipe for your crowd, you might try throwing in an extra egg to act as a binder. If eggs are not acceptable, you may be able to use a vegan egg replacement such as JUST Egg (which is next), Bob’s Red Mill egg replacer, aquafaba, ground flax seed, ground chia seed, or any of the many egg substitutes out there. (I would not use something like a mashed banana, apple sauce, or silken tofu like what would be acceptable in baking—it won’t act as a very good binder, and… that just doesn’t sound good in meatballs.)

Allergy or other dietary restrictions conflicts: Soy.

JUST Egg

This shit is crazy. Idk how they do it but it really just tastes like egg and cooks like egg. They even have JUST mayo and ranch dressing. For some reason this seems harder to me to achieve than ground beef—I mean, we’ve had Boca and other black bean burgers for eons, and MorningStar Farms has been around for 40 years, so progress has been made on that front. But an egg is just so… basic, simple, it had to have been a challenge to replicate. But they beat that challenge for SURE. (I’m hoping they broaden their dressing line—ranch and chipotle ranch is great, but a good vegan Caesar dressing would be incredible)

Allergy or other dietary restrictions conflicts: Nothing glaring, but they do have a very handy allergen chart!

Quorn

Also kinda wild but for a different reason than JUST or Impossible—this stuff is made with mycoprotein, meaning it comes from fungi. They have a whole explainer on the species and the fermentation process on their website. Bear in mind, while all of their products are vegetarian, not all of their products are vegan. Just keep an eye on the ingredient label. I personally love their “chicken” nuggets (referred to as “chiQin”). Once again, I literally cannot tell the difference, texturally and flavor-ally.

Allergy or other dietary restrictions conflicts: This is a weird one. Some of their products contain milk, egg, wheat, and gluten, but they, of course, all contain the mycoprotein. Some people out there are sensitive or allergic to the mycoprotein, but it’s very rare. They have a webpage with more information here.

Dairy alternatives beyond just milk

You probably already have your favorite milk alternative—soy, almond, cashew, oat, coconut, rice, or maybe something more obscure like potato, hemp, pea, hazelnut, flax, tigernut, walnut, quinoa, chia, or macadamia. Or… banana, sunflower, peanut… or sesame or pumpkin seeds… or… wow there are a lot of fucking milk alternatives. ANYWAY, this isn’t the point. The point is: dairy products do not stop at milk. Heavy cream, cheese, butter, yogurt, ice cream, custards… you get the idea. Again, if you’re in this boat, you probably already have a favorite brand of vegan ice cream or sorbet, but for those of us looking for vegan alternatives to basic ingredients, I have the following suggestions:

For heavy cream: coconut cream, or homemade concoctions of non-dairy milk and oil or non-dairy milk and silken tofu, or specially-prepared homemade nut creams. I even found a recipe for onion cream (originally from one of my favorite companies, ChefSteps) which would probably be amazing in savory sauces. In any of these applications, though, remember: a cornstarch slurry is your friend. If it’s not thick enough, cornstarch slurry.

For butter: the obvious answer here is a vegan-friendly margarine, which is easy enough to find at a grocery store near the ye-olde butter. But, depending on the application, you may be able to use coconut oil, vegetable shortening, vegetable (or other plant-based) oil, mashed banana, apple sauce, pumpkin puree, avocado, nut butter, or hummus. YMMV on some of these, but for cooking, oils and shortening will work great, for baking, coconut oil, shortening, banana, apple sauce, pumpkin puree, and avocado will work, and for topping things/use as a spread, avocado, nut butter, and hummus are probably good.

Cheese: I’m not going to lie, I haven’t tried any vegan cheese. I’ve heard enough horror stories I’m sort of afraid of them. That said, there are great reviews for vegan cream cheese-style spreads from Violife and Kite Hill, this French-style cashew cheese from Treeline, and cheddar slices and shreds also from Violife. One of these days I’ll buckle down and try some of this stuff.

As a final note, here, the stuff I just listed is mostly aimed towards fellow omnivores looking for ways to make stuff everyone can eat. Nonetheless, I encourage you to go out and find a good vegan recipe you enjoy—portobello mushroom steaks, vegan chili, tofu stir fry, the list goes on. Personally, my family has a minestrone soup recipe that we LOVE, and is one of those recipes you can make a batch of and have it feed you for a week. ………which I’m realizing I’ve never posted to this website somehow??? So I’ll put that under the cut if you’re interested. Anyway feeding your friends is an act of love and you should be able to feed all your friends thank you

INGREDIENCE

Olive oil

Salt and pepper

2 carrots, sliced

2 celery stalks, sliced

2 small onions, diced

8oz frozen green beans (abt 225g)

7 cups of water (about 1.65L)

1.5lbs diced tomatoes (about 680g)

Italian seasoning to taste

Garlic powder to taste

Parsley flakes to taste

1 can or tube of tomato paste

1 can cannellini beans, drained*

1 can garbanzo beans, drained*

1 can corn, drained*

Pasta of your choice (we use ditellini typically—definitely go for a smaller size. We probably use half a pound, but it’s really up to you.)

*Standard 15oz cans (about 425 grams)

Important note: all of these measurements are approximate and can be played with. Want more beans? Different beans? Other veggies? Pasta? Broth? Play around with it!

STEPS

1. In the bottom of a large enameled dutch oven or soup pot, sauté the onions, carrots, celery, and green beans in olive oil. Cover and cook for 15 minutes. (My recipe says stirring once, for some reason, but you can stir it occasionally. Keeping it covered helps soften everything up.)

2. Add water, tomatoes, tomato paste, and seasonings. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes.

3. Add beans, corn, and pasta. Simmer for 10 minutes.

4. Season to taste.

Another important note: the beans and pasta in this recipe are going to slorp up all the water you put in there. As you reheat it, feel free to add more water if it doesn’t seem soupy enough for you. (Personally, I’m a huge stew fan, so I enjoy it Thick™️.) Also feel free to use veggie broth instead of water as you reheat. This shit will last you a WHILE, so it’s not a bad idea to freeze some for later.

Hi! Vegetarian here.

I just wanted to let you guys know a few things for reference!

Vegetarian and vegan is not the same thing. All vegans are vegetarian, but not all vegetarians are vegan. Vegans are generally much stricter in their diets; while most vegetarians generally will eat eggs, dairy, and honey, vegans do not. However, some vegetarians don't eat eggs, either.

Most vegetarians do not eat seafood, though some do. No vegans eat seafood.

Not every vegetarian is also gluten-free, though some are.

There are many different reasons one might be vegetarian or vegan. Sometimes it's an animal rights or environmentalist issue, sometimes it's religious, sometimes it's health-related, and some people just don't like the taste and/or texture.

Please don't try to argue with us about our reasons for not eating meat, or try to convince us our diets are unhealthy. Yes, this includes concerns about protein and/or iron. With beans, legumes, and other such things, some vegetarians can eat even more protein than omnivores!

For the love of god and everything holy, please don't try to sneak meat or meat products into food, even if you're sure we "won't notice."

In general, if you wouldn't like a vegetarian doing it to you, don't do it to a vegetarian, whether that's tricking you into eating something, debating their religion, or expressing invasive health concerns.

That said, if you know a person well and have genuine, good-faith questions to ask, it is okay to ask them if they'd be willing to talk about it. Just don't be upset if they say no!

When in doubt about if something is suitable for a vegetarian, please ask! Most of us would rather read an entire ingredients list front-to-back, back-to-front, up-to-down, and down-to-up than eat something we try to exclude from our diets.

If you are at a setting (potluck, holiday dinner, etc) with a vegetarian, and there are both meat main dishes and vegetarian ones available, please wait for the vegetarian(s) to have gotten food before trying the vegetarian ones. You have no idea how upsetting it can be to be one of maybe five vegetarians at a gathering of fifty, and watch as all of the meat-eaters devour the cheese and veggie supreme pizza slices first, so that by the time we reach the line, there's only ten meat lovers pies left. If there is only a single vegetarian option, please don't eat it unless you absolutely have to.

Some items are often considered vegetarian-friendly, but in truth, aren't. Some of these include:

Worcestershire sauce. Aside from a few specifically vegan brands, these contain anchovies.

Meat broths, bouillons, etc. Yes, we do consider chicken broth not to be vegetarian, even if the soup itself has no actual meat in it.

Many kinds of miso are made with bonito flakes, and are therefore not vegetarian.

Many foods contain seafood derivatives for flavor; this also happens fairly often with chicken being added as well.

Caesar dressing contains anchovies, and is not vegetarian.

Foods cooked on the same surfaces as meat. Some vegetarians do not want to eat these (though others are more lax about this). In general, fast-food places and chain restaurants do not have designated vegetarian-friendly surfaces, and would therefore not fit the dietary preferences of a vegetarian who doesn't want to eat food cooked with meat.

"Jojo" potatoes (also known as fried potato wedges) are traditionally cooked in the same fryer as meat items such as fried seafood, chicken, etc.

Aside from some specific kinds, such as mushroom or onion, gravies are not vegetarian.

Many canned beans, refried beans, etc are not vegetarian as they are often cooked in lard.

Many brands and flavors of stovetop stuffing are not vegetarian. Ironically, the only flavor of Kraft's stovetop stuffing that is vegetarian is the pork-flavor one, while the savory herb one is not suitable for vegetarians.

Food that once had meat on it. Many, though not all, vegetarians do not consider "picking the meat off" of an item that had it (I.E. pepperoni pizza) to be acceptable. Part of the issue is the contact with meat, and another is that the flavors and oils will have seeped all over it. Have you ever noticed how much greasier the boxes are for pepperoni pizzas than for cheese ones? You are definitely free to ask, but please don't get offended if a vegetarian doesn't consider picking meat off of a dish to make it vegetarian-friendly.

Many storebought brands of puff pastry, pie crust, and etc are made with lard.

Many cheeses are made with rennet (an enzyme crucial for the making of many kinds of cheese) that is derived from animal stomachs and therefore not vegetarian. While some brands use microbial or plant-blased rennet, which are vegetarian, it is safe to assume that cheeses like parmesan or gruyere are not vegetarian, especially if they are traditional/DOP cheeses.

Anything with gelatin, as this is a byproduct of meat production. However, please note that some vegetarians are less fussy with byproducts than others, and this definitely falls into the "ask first" category.

Some, though not all, wines and beers use animal products in the process of purifying them.

Protein powder is usually produced using animal proteins.

Sugar, believe it or not, as often bone char is added to improve the whiteness. Try looking for vegan brands.

A lot of manufacturers love sneaking animal products into things it doesn't belong in, and it is really a miserable experience to get "meated". If you're cooking for or eating with a vegetarian, no one expects you to know everything, but again, when in doubt, ask! There's a lot of little things you can do to make it easier, especially during the holiday season. <3

Doing this all in one day because I can and because I’m a bit tired so here we go (bee mode: activated)

1. What type of dirt would your kintype eat?

Since many insects including myself are attracted to salty flavors, most likely something rich in minerals. Maybe dirt rich in iron, the kind that is usually a deep rusty red color? I feel like this question would be better answered if I were a termite instead

2. Warm or cold ocean water?

As an insect, I would drown. So hard no lol. As a human, however, cold water since I’ve grown up in the northwestern pacific.

3. Describe a pie your made from three ingredients your kintype would eat, including crust:

Definitely something sweet and sugary, although I do love me a good savory pie. Perhaps apple, raspberries, and a nice buttery flakey crust.

4. If your kintype suddenly opened their eyes, what would they be looking at?

Realistically? Either some flowers if I were a nectar collector, or other bees and larvae if I were a nest caretaker. Right now if I were to transform into a bee? I would be suffocated under my covers in bed, lmao.

5. Do you like sticks?

Yes, they make lovely resting spots. As a human? Ape brain makes me want to play with them.

6. Do you like leaves?

Yes, also makes for a good resting spot. You can hide under them during bad weather if you’re small like me.

7. Does your kintype migrate?

Not really, however, we (workers) may spend up to 12 hours a day gathering food and traveling upwards of 6-13 kilometers away from the nest.

8. Sleepy or awakey?

I should be active considering I’m literally a bee, but I prefer to snooze. Shhhhh. Don’t tell anyone

9. Smaller or larger than a breadbox?

The breadbox is just an airplane hanger for me. I’d get lost in there.

10. Describe the vegetation below your kintype’s feet

The petals, leaves, stigma, or filaments of a flower probably. If I were at the nest, I would be sitting atop the brood cells, made out of wax from the queen and nest caretakers.

11. Most specific or unusual shift?

Antennae between my eyebrows, extra limbs coming from my rib cage, also some first-person dream shifts of myself flying which is interesting

12. What website is your kintype most like?

Something structural, nicely organized, but natural and rustic at heart. Maybe iNaturalist?

13. Hey, how’s it going?

Well as of right this instant, very cold and uncomfortable. A bumblebee simply isn’t made for negative temperatures and yet here we are! (Lots of blankets, warm drinks, and socks)

14. If given a cellphone, what would your kintype do with it?

Get a sense of it using my antennae, smelling and tasting it. I certainly couldn’t use it.

15. How do I make my room more like my kintype?

I have lots of indoor plants to simulate the wilderness inside, as if it were my own little jungle. My room is ‘organized chaos’ as my friend used to say.

16. Favorite kind of fabric?

Things made from yarn, wool, fur, natural and warm textures make me happy. It replicates insect hair nicely.

17. Are you bitey?

If I’m feeling like it, sure. I try not to let my emotions get the better of me, but sometimes things need a good chomp.

18. How does your kintype feel about chia seeds?

To eat? No no no. Bad texture. Gag worthy. Chia pets are kinda fun though

19. Could your kintype knit? If not, what about instructions?

Absolutely not, sorry. Maybe if I had bee-sized yarn and tools I could try, but it’s hard when you have just two claws. Having six legs isn’t always a blessing. As for instructions? I would try but I wouldn’t get your hopes up, I never know what I’m doing either lol.

20. Describe your kintype’s skin texture in great detail

Oh boy. Well as you know, most if all insects have exoskeletons, skin that practically acts as armor. A bee’s skin is soft to human touch, but averagely tough for most other insects. Above the sleek and smooth exoskeleton, we have fine hairs that cover all of our body. The hair is very soft, and almost velvety to the touch. Preening and allopreening is important to keep the hairs clean and free of debris.

21. Glossy or matte?

Glossy, because it’s pretty. Matte feels a little uncanny for some reason.

23. Wildcard: random kintype fun fact?

The older a bumblebee is, the more likely it’s hair has been sun-bleached. By spending enough time in the sun during clear sky days, their bodies turn pale or even white the closer they are to dying. Morbidly haunting, but beautiful in a way. For example:

24. Kintype’s most acute sense?

Smell! Bees have a sense of smell 100x better than that of humans, and they use this sense to communicate by olfactory cues and pheromones.

25. Alone in the forest with no provisions, how long would your kintype survive?

Depends, honestly. During the fall or winter? I would be dead within hours, unfortunately. During the spring and summer, as long as nectar and sugars are available, I could probably live out my lifespan. Although it is very tough for banished or misplaced bees to survive without help from their siblings, queen, or the the nest.

26. Kintype as a canned vegetable?

Hmm. No thanks. What about pineapple?

27. It’s getting dark, does your kintype awake, sleep, or panic?

We aren’t nocturnal, so we sleep together at night. A bee away from the nest at night is a recipe for disaster.

28. How many fingers do you have and why?

I have two claws on each foot, but I have six legs in total. Now I’m trying hard to not think of a bee with human hands. Thanks.

29. What’s a really nice smell?

Patchouli, a fresh campfire, fir and pine trees, plumeria, peonies to name a few.

and I’m honestly thinking about giving it a try I just really love the colorful art style for the most part tbh lol my inner artist ig lmaoooo but honestly I wasn’t that big a fan of three houses tbh, I adore the characters but as a game it didn’t click with me I kinda dropped it after finishing claude and dimitri’s route (bc they’re the only lord for me 😔🤌🏼) but the game seems interesting. I wanna at least give it a try to form my own opinion yk??? but unfortunately it’s gonna have to wait bc I have TOO MANY GAMES TO PLAY ATM 😩😂
