The exchange, to paraphrase:

Aph: ‘I don’t really want to ride with you’ (<- justified)

Laur: ‘Fine, since you’re a strong independent woman, you can try and ride the Wyvern that’s been in my family for generations, I’m sure you can tame him immediately.’

And further evidenced by Ungrth saying, later:

‘I welcome you, you told me [bla bla bla]’.

Ungrth accepts her as a rider because of the conversation she has with him. Laur was fully expecting her to fail and then to swoop in all suave-like and go ‘oh well I guess I’ll just have to ride with you then’. And instead he got stuck in the lasso the whole ride.
