You’re gonna go far, kid [Punk! England x reader]
Synopsis: Ever since coming to England to study, you haven’t had the time to do what made you come in the first place--tourism! The only friend you have is an exchange student from Russia, Ivan, so why not kill two birds with one stone? He schedules a little playdate with Arthur, a local, so he can show you around the hottest spots in London. You two immediately hit it off. Ivan is quick to notice his interest in you, so he starts teasing the poor man and making things hard for him. Camden is the last destination, and there’s no saying when he’ll ever see you again. Will he be able to get over himself and ask you out before the night ends? Note: Attractions are italicized and have a link to a picture. Wordcount: 4,641 The reader is referred to as she/her.
This was the day you had been dreading, and yet, looking forward to. The first part was easy to explain. Picking up your hot latte, you set it down after a quick sip. You didn’t even have time to enjoy it. Not when you were typing away at your keyboard like a speed demon. You promised your friend you would finish your assignment before today’s meet-up, but your procrastination habits were a bitch. Nevertheless, you were eager to uphold your side of the deal, even if it meant stressing your hair out to get it done.
So long as he didn’t show up before you were done, right?
After burning your tongue for the second time that morning, you let out a small groan at the sting you felt but gasped at what you saw outside the window. It was a sound made from genuine terror--rather than the quiet streets of London at seven AM, you spotted a man pressing his face right up to the glass. And he was staring at you, menacingly.
Anybody would’ve been creeped out by the sight, but you knew the guy. “Aha--Ivan! Hey! Morning?” You began rather awkwardly.
He waved in response, and his glower melted away in exchange for a childlike smile. “Dobroye utro, (F/N)! I hope that’s not your assignment you’re doing.” He hummed, placing two hands on the glass to peer at your screen from outside. Oh shit. Glancing briefly at said screen, you turned it away before clicking the upload button.
“Of course not.” You grinned, shutting your laptop immediately after. “I was just... Surfing the net. Checking Instagram. You know?”
“Is that so? I’m gonna check.” He made his way inside. And in no time, he was looming over your shoulder to start browsing through your internet history. You, on the other hand, were sweating balls.
“You’re so funny, (F/N). Who checks Instagram on their computer?”
It seemed like only yesterday he was the oblivious exchange student from Russia who had no concept of social media. He had been a country bumpkin through and through, but a few semesters after befriending you, your influence rubbed off on him. Even you had no idea what went through your head when decided to talk to him, the intimidating new kid who spoke broken English, but there was no turning back now. He was attached to you by the hip and picked up on your habits faster than you could deal.
He only became more of a menace when he discovered Twitter.
A displeased expression contorted at his expression when he saw that there was no evidence of you ‘surfing the net’. Google Docs couldn’t possibly count, after all. “... Hm... Apparently, not you. Why didn’t you finish this yesterday, sunflower? Remember our promise?”
You sighed. “Look, I’m sorry. I passed out last night. But hey, I technically finished it before you came, didn’t I?”
He craned his head from side to side in thought. “Maybe. But if you hadn’t, you know what that means.” Ivan coiled his arms around your neck and a sickeningly sweet smile curled up at his lips.
“You will come with me to Moscow for Christmas!”
A chill ran down your spine at the thought. Going to Russia was bad enough. But during Winter? You were never good with the cold. If you could barely handle London, Moscow was out of the question. “Oh God, please no.” He nodded giddily. “I’m never going to Russia. Maybe I’d consider it during Summer, but--anyway, that’s not the point here! I didn’t break any promises so I won’t be turning into a popsicle this year. Got that?”
He pouted. “Aw...”
“You damn sadist.”
“Hehe.”
“I wonder how you even became friends with him. Arthur, was it? Poor dude.” You mumbled, but he didn’t look all too offended.
He tapped his chin and hummed. “Now that you mention it.” Then, he let out a short laugh. “It’s a long story. Let’s just say it was a happy little accident.”
“Unfortunate.”
“But don’t worry! I don’t plan on bothering you as much as him today.” Ivan clarified, earning a slow nod from you. Phew. The clock was inching closer to eight and you weren’t much of a morning person, so hearing that was like music to your ears. “That’s why I wanted you to finish your work yesterday. I want him to be the only one making mistakes! It’s interesting to see him mess up and get embarrassed.”
You had to wonder if he was using ‘interesting’ as a synonym for fun because he was clapping. “... Ivan, you really are a sadist.”
The two of you stayed in that café for another hour or so, ordering some breakfast during your stay. Once the table was cleared and the bill was paid, you and he caught a bus to the London eye. You could marvel at the iconic ferris wheel for a few minutes as you walked up to the London aquarium next to it, your first stop. The building was huge to start with, and it didn’t look like they’d be storing fish in there considering how fancy it was. But wasn’t everything in England fancy?
“He should be waiting in the front. Look for a short grouchy man with a bad taste in fashion.” You shot him a weird look, beckoning him to elaborate.
“... And blonde hair.”
“Alright. I guess I’ll try my best.” Glancing around the sea of people filled with tourists, couples, and families, you skimmed the crowd for someone who fitted the description--but to no avail. It was only when they walked up to you both did you find the guy. He had short and choppy blonde hair that framed a heart-shaped face, and under his fringe was a pair of lime green eyes staring on with a neutral expression. And did Ivan say he had bad taste?
You couldn’t agree. Yes, his charcoal pants were ripped and he had a bandana tied around his neck with a Union Jack on it. But he still had a kind of style you liked. Under his black leather jacket was a gray shirt, and combined with the piercings in his right ear, you couldn’t help admiring him for a second.
“Arthur! I was wondering if you were trampled because we couldn’t find you.” Ivan began, causing the said man to furrow his brows. And boy, were they thick.
“You just arrived, so don’t start now you twat.” He grumbled. Ivan never teased you for your height, even when you were a little shorter than the Brit. He always found it cute, but you figured it was only because you didn’t care. The Russian always found amusement in poking fun at others, after all. “Anywho, I’m glad I won’t be spending the whole day alone with you.”
Turning to you with a soft smile this time, he held out a hand for you to shake. “Kirkland. Arthur Kirkland.”
You shook it, but not without a laugh. It hadn’t even been a minute since meeting him, and his personality seemed to clash violently with his appearance. He sounded so prim and proper, but his outfit screamed punk rock.
“(L/N). (F/N) (L/N).”
He released you from his grip. Placing his hands on his hips with an accusing stare, he felt a grin upturn his lips. “Are you copying me, (F/N)?”
“I don’t know. Do all British people introduce themselves like James Bond?”
Arthur clicked his tongue. “... Not all of them. Just a force of habit.”
“Mhm. Right, right. Well, it’s nice to meet you, Arthur. I’m a student here too and I could only imagine how busy it gets for you--so thanks for coming out today!” He didn’t respond to those comments and simply nodded.
Ivan stayed quiet in the back, but he was probably reading the atmosphere like he always did when he didn’t speak.
“It’s nice to meet you too.” The blonde turned on his heel and closed his eyes. “As much as I’d like to stay out here and chat, we can do that in the aquarium. Wouldn’t wanna waste our tickets, do we?”
While the group of three wandered slowly through the establishment, Ivan lingered in the background while you walked in the front with the Brit. For the first ten minutes, you’d look at him expectantly, gesturing for him to join in the conversation. As the mutual, wasn’t he supposed to be the icebreaker? He’d shake his head every time, offering you a smile as if to say, go and make some friends. But soon, this brief spell of irritation morphed into gratitude.
“I’ve been here probably a hundred times, so don’t take it personally when I don’t seem as excited as you.” Turning to him to watch his face as he spoke--which was filtered through a bluish tinge from the Antarctic setting-- you only caught a brief glimpse of it before he turned away. Huh. Maybe it was just you not paying enough attention.
Either way, what came out of your mouth next would surely grab his.
“Don’t worry about it. But hey, this is the first time you’ve been here with me, so look alive, won’t you?” It happened to be a slip of the tongue, something bold and improvised, but luckily, he reacted fairly quickly before the regret set in.
“Oi, you better not be flirting with me already,” Arthur grumbled, feeling another smile come as he heard you chuckle. Since when was he this expressive? He pinned it on the fact that he was starting to have a little fun himself.
“Couldn’t imagine it.” Before he could add anything else, you hopped in front of the penguins and started waving your friend over with great gusto. “Ivan, c’mere. Arthur, mind taking a photo of us?” Once he joined your side, the two of you held up peace signs for the Brit to snap a photo.
“Ivan, change your pose. We can’t have both of you doing the same thing.”
The said man moved his peace sign to the back of your head so he could stick two fingers over it. “Is that better?”
“... Better.” Trailing his emerald eyes to you, he felt his cheeks heat up a touch at the sight of you grinning ear to ear. What the fuck, Arthur. Just take the damn photo. And that was exactly what he did, showing you both right after. Whatever just happened, he boiled it down to him idealizing a stranger. That was right. He had yet to get to know you, so his perception of you couldn’t be any better at this stage.
But there was one thing he couldn’t deny.
“Damn, I look really ugly in this. You two better not post this anywhere.” You settled a hand over the screen to lower it with a nervous laugh. Then, you looked away, and what was that? You looked a little flustered.
You were cute.
Hanging his head to look at the photo, he knitted his brows together. You? Ugly? He couldn’t imagine it.
“... I bet I could take an even uglier one of you.”
Spinning back to him, you folded your arms. “What did you say?”
“Nothing.” He shook his head slowly, and the amusement in his voice made it blatantly obvious he was lying.
“That’s what I thought.”
Walking off at that, Ivan followed. Because he was behind him, he could brush his shoulders against his. Arthur looked up at that, but almost wished he didn’t. Ivan was smiling down at him so shrewdly, it was threatening. Then, he raised a hand to his mouth so he could laugh softly. “Huhu. You like (F/N)~”
His eyes flew open and blood rushed up to his face. “What the hell gave you that impression? I literally just met them!” As adamant as he sounded, he knew deep inside he liked you, but only platonically. Your personality was refreshing, and talking to you was as easy as breathing. Even if it wasn’t platonic attraction, he was endlessly frustrated the other figured it out earlier than he could.
Whatever it was, he was certainly more sociable than usual, even to the point of being a tease. And not to mention the rosy cheeks. Maybe he should’ve just kept his trap shut--otherwise, his huge outburst let Ivan milk the obvious. Fuck. He even started to giggle like a schoolchild.
Giving him a rough shove, he muttered a string of curses under his breath. “I bloody hate your arse, you know that?” He hissed, his face now redder than a tomato. God, why he did have to be born so pale? Every slight change to his complexion was jarring, and it was embarrassing.
“Don’t hate me because I’m right,” Ivan hummed, joining his side as your back came into view. “Once you realize, it’ll be too late. I’m not letting you have (F/N). I will always be (F/N)’s number one.” Lighting up at that, he skipped off to you in the front. “Wait for me, sunflower! Don’t leave me alone with Arthur!”
Arthur stopped in his tracks and clenched his fists. How annoying. If he was going to continue being a little tyke, then he figured he’d up his game as well. He didn’t know what that exactly entailed yet, but he’d do it. Ivan didn’t even sound like he wanted anything more than friendship, so what was with that? Pointing a finger at him as he walked off with you, his face scrunched up.
“What did you even call me out for then, you idiot? I’m supposed to be guiding you both!” Picking up his pace at that, he slotted himself between you and him. Flashing you a brief smile, he gave Ivan another push without breaking eye contact. “It’s a tight fit for three, so he’ll stay in the back.”
“Hey, no fair!”
By the time the whole aquarium was toured, you and Arthur were laughing to yourselves while leaving through the exit.
But the joyful atmosphere was short-lived.
The Ferris wheel just outside was the next stop, and the Brit offered to splurge a little to have a carriage without strangers. That way, you could run around as much as you wanted, even if that meant leaving the two men to sit in their lonesome. While Ivan was sitting on the bench in the centre out of his own volition, the same couldn’t be said for him.
Sitting back to back to the other, he pressed his legs firmly together and leaned over in a hunch. Then, he dug his hands through his hair, all while keeping his round eyes fixated on the ground. His heart couldn’t stop pounding, and his head was spinning like a carousel. What was he thinking, taking you here? That was right. This was an iconic destination you couldn’t miss, that was why. He was initially planning on staying back there on the ground, but you were so excited, he couldn’t help but hop on with you.
Fuck. Maybe Ivan was right about him. But he wouldn’t let him know it. Speaking of the guy, he didn’t know if he was sitting there by choice, or just rubbing it in. While he was incapacitated by fear so he couldn’t even stand, he was sitting there because he wanted to.
“You should’ve stayed on the ground if this was going to happen.”
Arthur screwed his eyes shut and tightened his arms around his stomach. “... Shut up.”
“I was just saying.” Ivan murmured, looking at him over his shoulder. Poor guy. He really was down bad, wasn’t he? Down bad for you, that was. Too bad Arthur was hoping he wasn’t convinced--but it was too obvious. So all Ivan wanted was to prove his point, and later on, keep you away from him. But maybe he’d save it until after the ride was over. “... This ride is thirty minutes long. You’ll live.”
He heard the other groan. “Thirty minutes? How long has it been?”
“Mm... Ten.”
“Fuck me.”
Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be long before you would pull away from the railing and return to the company of the two. Arthur had been praying that somehow, you’d leave him alone sitting there, pathetically, but he couldn’t expect something so cold from you. So while he hung his head, he wasn’t surprised to feel your hand on his shoulder.
“Hey, you okay?” He heard you ask, but he never looked up.
“... Yeah. Just give me a minute.”
“I have. Ten, actually.” Taking a seat beside him, you leaned down to peer at his face, which was a few shades paler than normal. He didn’t even have the energy to respond, and kept his eyes fixed to the ground. Concern immediately contorted at your features, especially when he looked so shaken. “Arthur, you look a little sick. What’s wrong? Can you talk?”
He shook his head slowly before managing a weak smile at you. “Sorry, love.” It didn’t even faze him he just called you that. He was far too uncomfortable to feel the embarrassment from a nickname he should’ve saved until a little later.
“I’m not... Too good with heights. Never have been... I was hoping you wouldn’t notice.” His voice was slow and faint, and you were beginning to suspect he was having a panic attack. “... Sorry if I seem a little lame.”
“No, of course not.” You frowned. “Things like this happen. Just breathe with me, okay? You can do it. Just count to ten.”
Arthur took a deep inhale. “... Okay.”
Around ten minutes later of these exchanges, he calmed down some, especially when you kept on reminding him that the carriage was finally descending. Once the ride was over, you had to help him up and walk him out. Now that he had his two feet planted firmly on the ground, it didn’t take long for him to recover. Even then, you remained rather cautious and stuck with him on your journey to Soho. By the time everyone took their seats in Circolo Popolare, a beautiful Italian restaurant Arthur so kindly booked, you were still looking out for him.
Leaning over to rest your head on the table, you glanced up at his face with a soft smile. “... You okay now?”
A light blush dusted his cheeks and he nodded. You didn’t need to be this observant with him considering he was well now, but he loved your attentiveness. It wasn’t something he was used to. “Yeah, I’m fine now. Thank you. Now quit worrying about me, alright?” Rubbing the nape of his neck at that, you couldn’t help lingering on his body language for a moment.
It didn’t matter what he dressed like, or what his personality was. He could be endearing when it came to it, and a total softie too. And the thought made you smile even wider. If he thought you were cute, then you thought he was adorable. “Fine. I’ll leave you alone.” You slowly turned to Ivan, the action making Arthur tense up a little.
Reaching out to your hand, he took it. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
The feeling of his warm fingers around yours made your heart skip a beat. Did he just? Your thoughts manifested into your look of shock, and you darted your eyes over his neutral expression to try and decipher it. Before you could come up with anything, there was a phone in your face, followed by a flash.
“Wha--?”
He turned the screen to you to reveal a photo of you, and in your opinion, it was the least flattering picture anybody had ever taken of you. “I said I’d take an uglier photo of you, didn’t I?” Arthur grinned, the words acting like a cold splash of water to bring you back to reality.
“... You sneaky little shit.” You growled. “Delete that right now!”
“How about no?”
“I’ll never forgive you for this, Arthur.”
“I think you already have, love. You’re smiling right now.”
You stared at him wordlessly for a few seconds. Then, out of nowhere, you reached out to snatch his phone right out of his hands. Tapping furiously on the screen to get rid of it, you heard his chair scrape back violently as he tried to retrieve it. “Why, you--”
But it was too late. Gone forever. Lost in the abyss of cyberspace. And so, he immediately channelled his frustration by jabbing his fingers into your sides. “If I can’t have that photo of you, at least let me do this!” You burst into a fit of laughter so loud, nearby patrons turned their heads. Only then did he pull away, leaving you to recover through breathless wheezing.
“Fuck you, Arthur.” You whispered, but it was on an affectionate note more than anything. As you glowered at him from your seat, you never noticed Ivan doing the same thing, but he was glaring at the Brit for an entirely different reason. Arthur had to be the most self-aware person out there, and to make a scene in a restaurant like this? He really fell for you, didn’t he?
When he realized Ivan’s scorching gaze burning into him, he froze.
Not just out of how intimidated he was, but the epiphany that he was right all along. Why else was he acting so out of character? The only explanation was this--in the short time of being with you, he may or may not have developed a little crush. But that was no problem, right?
All he needed to do was to ask you out.
But that would prove a task easier said than done, especially when Ivan decided to attach himself to you by the hip after that stunt. That cunning bastard knew what he was doing. After a little window shopping around Bond street and Mayfair, he stuck to you like a tattoo, and kept it up until night fell. While the group walked around Camden, Ivan kept you by his side with a firm grip on your hand.
When you asked why he was suddenly so clingy, he simply justified it with, “It’s dangerous for small people like you to wander around at night!”
But Arthur called bullshit. Especially when the other went ahead and smirked at him right after saying it. Maybe he liked you too, but was refusing to admit it. How hypocritical. If not, then he probably didn’t want you making friends when you were the only friend he had. Whatever it was, he wasn’t about to back down so easily. Camden may be the last destination for the night, and perhaps, the last time he’d see you again for God knows how long, but it was his trump card.
If this didn’t sweep you off your feet enough to get you to pull away from Ivan, nothing would.
As a town famous for its thriving nightlife and punk culture, it encompassed everything he was passionate about, and he’d give anything to show it to you. So he included a visit to the bar here on the agenda today, one that hosted live music. While you and Ivan got comfortable in your seats, Arthur never made a move to sit down.
It was already dim inside, so you never noticed him leave. The next time you saw him, it was a few minutes later when he was on stage with a few other musicians. Leaning forward with surprise, you watched him strap on a bright red electric guitar. Walking up to the microphone, he adjusted that. No way.
You were still trying to process him being a professional performer, but a lead singer as well?
The second he strummed the strings to start a guitar riff, he opened his mouth to start singing.
Play this while you read
youtube
Show me how to lie, you're getting better all the time
And turning all against the one is an art that's hard to teach
His fingers never stopped moving as he belted out note after note. His voice was so different to how he talked, you had to do a double take. He sounded a little more rasp, a little more punk. To say you were impressed was an understatement.
Now dance, fucker, dance, man, he never had a chance
And no one even knew it was really only you
While he jammed out on stage, he was electric. The energy in the bar exploded, and he had everyone singing along. You could almost see the confidence in him shoot up from the excitable crowd, because he was smirking.
Nice work, you did.
You’re gonna go far, kid!
Turning his head to you as he sung that line, you raised a hand to your mouth. Whether he did that on purpose or not was a mystery. But no words could describe how attractive it was. Hell, it even made you mind blank for a few moments. This was Arthur? He was like an entirely different person! Needless to say, you were completely star struck.
You couldn’t even make out what Ivan was telling you when the music was blaring in your ears. But you didn’t care. Arthur had you caught in a trance with his voice and guitar all until the end. When the song finally ended, the band bowed graciously and threw up hand signs as the audience erupted in applause and cheers.
When he stepped off the stage, you didn’t hesitate to run up to him. There, you practically pounced on him for a tight embrace. “Oh my god, you were amazing! I didn’t know you could play so well! And sing, too! Why didn’t you tell me!?” You exasperated, pulling away to be met with his dazzling smile. It was the first time you’ve seen him so energetic, as if performing sparked a fire inside him that burned with youthful intensity.
“I was dying to show you all day. I wanted it to be a surprise, and I had to save the best til’ last, didn’t I?” He grinned, feeling his heart swell up with warmth as he watched you light up.
“Well, good on you! I loved it!” Squeezing him again, you felt his chest shake under his laughs. When you pulled away, you reached up to cup his face. But it felt so natural in the spur of the moment, even he didn’t seem to care.
“Thanks again for today, Arthur. I really appreciate you taking us out today. You completely blew me away.”
The way how you phrased it reminded him of why he was here in the first place. That was right. He still had to ask you out. And with Ivan watching on from afar, this was his chance. The thought reddened his cheeks, but while you had his face in your hands, he couldn’t feel more comfortable. “Is that so? If that’s the case, how about I take you out again?” His expression grew serious. “A proper date, I mean.”
It was your turn to blush, but you managed a quick answer.
“No need to look so serious, love. Of course I’ll go on a date with you.”
He chuckled and leaned in to peck your lips. “Stealing my vocabulary now, are we?”
“Stealing kisses now, are we?”
“Touché.”
Now a third wheel of the group, he breathed out a soft sigh and rested his cheek on his hand. “I guess my job here is done.” It didn’t really look like it, but he had been trying to play the wingman all along. Arthur was always one to go a little crazy when he wanted something, and only more so when he was desperate. So all he gave him was a little push in the right direction.
Maybe he would thank him later, but for now, he’d leave you two be.
This is a request. Thank you for requesting.

kirby anon- hi lol maybe a childhood next door neighbor thing where ur parents are always nagging u two and it’s like sneaking in to cuddle at night but “just friends” until they finally realize they’re into eachother.... omg not sure if that makes any sense but whatever u write is gonna be fantastic :)
not nsfw below the cut :)
“what did you do?” you lean against one of the pillars on your front porch, crossing your arms over your chest. kirby walks towards you holding two bags in one hand and his wallet, keys, and phone in the other. “do you not have a pocket?”
“so many questions,” he teases, pressing his lips to the top of your head. you try to take the bags from him and he refuses, moving past you and towards your front door. “i went to the store so i could have something to put in my shake in the morning and yes, i do have pockets but you were rushing me.”
you push the door open for him and follow behind him into your kitchen, “you said you would be here two hours ago and you literally live twenty seconds away, maybe thirty if there’s a pothole. i’m not gonna stay up all night waiting for you.”
“first of all, it’s barely nine o’clock,” he shoves his spinach into an empty spot on one of the shelves in the fridge, “and secondly, yes you would. you know you would.”
you feel your face heat up, diverting your eyes to your slipper covered feet. he chuckles as you pull on the fabric of your shirt, a chicago development camp one, and you hear him grab something out of the bed. he slides it across the counter and your eyes light up at the neon colors on the package, “sour patch kids?”
“i hoped it’d make up for my tardiness,” he teases, and you hum, pulling open the bag. you drop one into your mouth before shrugging and walking out of the kitchen, ascending the stairs towards your bedroom. you hear the refrigerator door closing and the rushed footsteps following you up the stairs. you grin, picking up your pace to your bedroom. you barely make it off the final step before his arms are wrapping around you and picking you up off the ground. you squeal as his mouth drops to your ear, “why are you running princess?”
before you can answer, your brother's door swings open and he looks at you two confused. kirby doesn’t let you down, only holds you tighter as your brother speaks, “i don’t even wanna know. hey, kirby.”
“what’s up,” kirby clears his throat, nodding at your brother before he shuts the door. you turn your head to look at kirby before bursting into a fit of giggles as he shakes his head and carries you into your room.
he deposits you onto your bed, letting you get comfortable before he curls into your side, wrapping his arms tightly around your waist so that you couldn’t move. if you wanted to, that was. you bring your hand to rest on his head, carding your fingers through his hair, “what if i wanted to be the little spoon?”
“you were little spoon last time,” he argues, voice muffled because his face was buried into the fabric of your shirt which- “don’t think i didn’t notice that you stole this from me.”
“what are you-” you’re seemingly saved by his phone starting to vibrate in the pocket of his shorts. he sighs as he fishes it out and when you see who it was, you try and shift away.
“stay,” he says, slipping his free hand under your shirt and resting his cool fingers on the warm skin of your hip. he accepts the facetime and rests his hand on your stomach to where you could see his face and your hand in his hair. “adam!”
“dacher!” the accented voice seems overly enthused for this time of night. “can you- hold up. who is that? with the pink nails?”
“my girl. don’t worry about it. what do you want?” his response is clipped, obviously annoyed by his curious teammate, and your stomach twists at the label. “is the sun even up there?”
“no,” adam responds with a chuckle. you had yet to meet the swede in person, however, you had heard stories from camp and greeted him when he would crash yours and kirby’s facetimes during the season. “but i was going to get on chel. can you play?”
“not gonna be home tonight,” he responds, turning on his side and resting his head on your stomach. you keep your hand in his hair as a distraction. “maybe tomorrow though. i’ll have to see.”
“who is your girl? and why do i have to schedule when to play with you?” he asks and you can’t help but giggle as you reach for your own phone. he makes a strangled noise, “is that y/n? that sounds like-”
“goodbye,” he hands up the phone and winds both of his arms around your waist, squeezing you as though you would try and slip away.
you fall into a comfortable silence, one hand scratching lightly at his scalp and your other scrolling through your phone, while he just lies there, ignoring the vibrations from his own phone every few seconds. the notification pops up at the top of your screen and you press it, letting it lead you to the screen of red squares. your thumb hits the second square, the first was were kirby was pinned, and you analyze the picture before sighing. you take one of the upper half of your head and type back your response, quickly sending it before hopping back over to instagram.
“who was that?” he asks, having shifted upon hearing the familiar click because you had forgotten to silence your phone.
“tristan,” you answer quickly. you hope that he would just let it be, but that wasn’t who kirby was. not when it came to you, at least.
“tristan?” he asks again and you hum, not looking at him. he rolls to be on top of your body and you grunt at the sudden weight, “that’s a thing?”
“it might be. we’re just talking right now,” you admit, very aware of his pointed gaze. he takes your phone and drops it beside his own. you look at him with a raised eyebrow, “what? do you have a problem with that or something?”
“i do actually, yeah,” he says and you suddenly feel hot. “why tristan? like, out of all the people in this town, tristan?”
“i got tired of waiting around for you, i guess,” you mumble before shrugging, shoving him away, and standing up. you make your way over to your bathroom so you wouldn’t be there when he left your bedroom, but his next words made you freeze:
“i haven’t stopped thinking about you, y’know? ever since that night.”
and you didn’t need to ask what that night was. you thought about it often too, vancouver. last summer. both a little less sober than you should’ve been and your bodies got tangled under the sheets of the bed in his hotel room. his jersey that you’d been wearing basically the whole night strewn across the chair.
as much as you had tried to make yourself forget, to shut out the memory, you couldn’t.
“you don’t?” you hear the bed shift and you feel his presence behind you.
“i do too,” you whisper, “i just thought you didn’t.”
“why would you think that?” he turns you to face him. “i thought it was pretty obvious i was into you.”
you scoff, “if it was obvious i wouldn’t be talking to tristan.”
“then stop. you don’t want to be with him i can tell. be with me. the one you swing with in primary school. the one who colored you the tiger that’s hanging on the wall. let it be me, y/n,” he pleads. his big hand rests on the side of your neck, pulling you closer. his breath fans across your lips, “because, for me, it’s always been you.”

Interview Trouble, Part Two- Tom Holland Mini Series
Pairing: Tom Holland X Reader
Prompt: With your relationship now public, you and Tom do interviews together.
Word Count: 1900
Part One
Masterlist Tom Holland Masterlist
*Gif is not mine*
A/N: Didn’t intend on doing a part two, but I couldn’t help myself!
~~~
“Hi, everyone, I am Y/N Y/L/N.” You smiled at the camera.
“And I’m Tom Holland.” Tom said with a wave.
“And we’re here to answer some questions while playing with puppies.” You explained, as prompted. Tom immediately started to try to play with as many puppies as he could. Meanwhile, you just casually played with the one nearest you. Your relationship had been public for a year now, and, with Tom’s new movie coinciding with you releasing new music, your managers set up couple’s interviews for the two of you to do together.
“How did you two meet?” The interviewer asked, off camera.
“We met,” Tom started, looking at you with a smile, “At this pub in London about two years ago. I had been a fan of Y/N’s music for a while, so when I saw her I just had to go say hi.”
“Correction. He tripped and fell on his way over to me so I had to help him up.” You teased and he pouted.
“What can I say? I was already falling for you.” He laughed, “But it’s true. I was whipped.”
“I’m whipped too.” You leaned over to give him a peck on the lips.
“You live together now. Would you two ever adopt a dog?” The interviewer spoke up. As if on cue, a small black puppy flopped down into your lap and started to fall asleep.
“Aw, I feel chosen.” You smiled, softly petting the dog. You turned your attention back to the camera to answer the question. “We haven’t really thought about it, have we?” You looked over at Tom.
“We haven’t, no.” He laughed, “I love that you have to look at me to make sure we haven’t talked about getting a dog.”
“Maybe I just want to look at you.” You joked, playfully rolling your eyes at your boyfriend.
“We should get a dog, though. When we go home next, we’ll get a dog, just for you Buzzfeed.” Tom said, continuing to play the puppies crawling over his lap.
“What’s the most romantic thing you’ve done for each other?” The interviewer continued.
“Oh God,” You let out a small sigh as you started to think about what you’d consider to be the most romantic thing.
“Oh God? Am I really not that romantic?” Tom questioned, feigning offense.
“No, no.” You laughed.
“Did you see her reaction? Just ‘oh God, he never does anything romantic’.” He teased.
“I didn’t say that.” You playfully hit his arm. “I need to think about it.”
“I say, the most romantic thing you’ve done is- remember when we first started dating and you were over at my place?”
“Oh, this.” You smiled fondly. Tom turned to the camera to continue explaining.
“We’d only been dating for about a month, and I got really sick when Y/N was at my house. I had food poisoning so I couldn’t stomach anything, but she stayed with me and made me soup when I could eat again.”
“That’s such an odd thing for you to consider the most romantic thing I’ve ever done for you.” You teased. “You were like ‘most romantic thing? She saw me puke but she stayed’. Peak of romance right there.”
“It’s true, though. I really thought ‘she’s seen me vomit, she’s going to break up with me’, but you stayed. You’ve done a lot of romantic things, but that was the first one that I was like ‘I’m in love with this girl’.” He said, a small blush in his cheeks because, yes, he did just embarrassingly admit to the world that him being so sick was ‘the peak of romance’.
“Aw, babe.” You smiled, leaning over and kissing him. “I think the most romantic thing you’ve done for me was when we were in Atlanta, just before my tour while you were filming Avengers. You had the day off and we went to this small boutique, and I saw this cute wolf figurine.” You held up with your hands about the size of it, not bigger than your own hand. “I didn’t buy it that day, but when you surprised me on tour like a month later, you gave me that because you’d gone back and gotten it for me.”
“I like that you both went for small gestures, when we’ve all seen the Bali pictures.” The interviewer joked, referring back to when Tom surprised you with a trip to Bali. Not only was the trip a surprise holiday, but he also had candles and rose petals put throughout the hotel room.
“Oh, no, that’s up there.” You laughed. The small puppy on your lap let out a whine, calling for attention.
“We’re definitely adopting a dog.” Tom said and you nodded in agreement.
And a couple weeks later, when you both returned to England, you had adopted not one, but two puppies.
~~~
Back in England, you two still had more interviews to do. This time, though, you two were doing it through Facebook live. Instead of having an interviewer ask questions, you two read off a cue card, asking each other questions to see who knew the other better.
“Which of your movies is my favorite?” You asked Tom, once the cameras started to roll.
“Far From Home.” He said, smugly, already knowing he got the right answer. “What’s my favorite song of yours?”
“A Thousand Years.” You replied, immediately knowing his answer. It was the first song you had written about him, and he went weak anytime he heard it. “What’s my go-to drink?”
“I might not know this.” Tom laughed, nervously. “I like beer, but yours is tequila, right?”
“Two years and you still question if I like tequila.” You teased. “But that’s right.”
“Who was my childhood celebrity crush? Damn, that’s easy.” He shook his head, “Unfair.”
“Is it Jennifer Aniston?” You asked, and he nodded, “I guessed that one.”
“Oh sure.”
“Who would I love to collab with?”
“Ed Sheeran.” Tom replied quickly.
“You know me so well.”
“What’s my all-time favorite movie?” Tom read the card, laughing, “Wait, I don’t even know this one.”
“Does Dodgeball count? We’ve watched it like a million times together.” You joked.
“Yeah, it counts.” He nodded, approvingly.
“Last question. What’s my ring size?”
“Wait, I know this.” Tom paused, thinking about it. “I just talked to your sister about this the other day.”
“You what?” Your eyes went wide at his comment. He laughed, awkwardly remembering the interview was live.
“She was talking about how she has a ring that she wants to get rid of, she was going to give it to you.” He explained, maintaining his cool. The blush on his face told you another story; you could tell he was lying. He may be an actor, but he could never lie to you, no matter how much he wanted to.
The interview’s director cut the livestream there, and everyone left you and Tom on the couch to talk about the elephant in the room.
“So you asked my sister about my ring size.” You said, smiling hopefully at Tom.
“Yeah,” He rubbed the back of his neck. “I didn’t mean to spoil it. God, I’m so bad at keeping secrets.”
“I love that you suck at keeping secrets. It’s adorable and it’s so completely you.” You placed a hand on his arm, rubbing it softly. Tom fished into his pant pockets and pulled out the small red box.
“This isn’t how I wanted to do this, but I don’t really care because I just want to be with you.” Tom shifted off the couch and onto one knee.
“You don’t have to do this now. I can wait.” You reassured him, knowing that you couldn’t convince him to change anyway. Not that you wanted to wait- your answer would still be the same no matter when or how he asked.
“Y/N Y/L/N, I love you more than I can explain. Everyday that I spend with you, I fall more in love, and I want to spend everyday with you for the rest of my life. I’m already the luckiest and happiest man on earth because I have you, but will you make me even luckier and happier and marry me?” Tom asked, popping open the box to present a beautiful, small diamond ring to you.
“I love you so much- yes!” You hadn’t even finished your own sentence before Tom was already slipping the ring onto your finger. Both of you knew exactly what you’d say, and it made you love him even more. He sat back on the couch next to you, so that you could kiss your fiance properly.
~~~
“Please welcome the talented, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, Tom Holland!” Jimmy Kimmel announced as the curtain opened to reveal Tom. Tom walked out onto the stage, waving at the audience, and shaking hands with Jimmy. He saw you in the crowd and blew you a cheeky kiss before sitting down in his spot.
“So, it’s been a year since you’ve last been on the show. How has life been?” Jimmy asked.
“It’s been good, just lots of work. I spent a good portion of last year just working on different sets. I got some exciting stuff coming soon.” Tom replied happily.
“You also,” Jimmy paused as he got out a picture of Tom’s post on Instagram. It was of you two kissing while you held up your left hand; the classic proposal photo. “got engaged recently?”
“Yeah, I did.” His cheeks went red as his eyes found yours in the crowd.
“Congratulations. Can we bring Y/N up here?” The host asked and the audience cheered when you stood from your seat. Jimmy greeted you with a hug and you kissed Tom as you sat down next to him on the couch. “Let’s see the ring.”
“There we go.” Tom said proudly as you showed off your left hand to Jimmy, the audience, and the cameras.
“Did we get a good close up of it?” You joked.
“It’s so shiny, it’s hard to take a good picture.” Tom laughed. You casually rested your left hand on his leg and he covered your hand with his own.
“I heard a rumor that, Tom, you actually spoiled the surprise.” Jimmy said, “How did- how did you do that?”
“So we were doing a livestream interview, and I had been very secretive about proposing-“ Tom started.
“You were not secretive.” You teased. “You told everyone except for me.”
“That’s generally how proposals work.” Jimmy laughed.
“No, I’m talking about how fans knew he was going to propose. He would tell people in the grocery store, that kind of everyone.”
“I was excited and trying not to tell you.” Tom said, “It’s hard not being able to tell the person I tell everything to about something so exciting.”
“But anyway,” you continued the story, “He said during the livestream he’d just asked my sister for my ring size, and then he proposed when the cameras stopped rolling.”
“How sweet.” Jimmy commented.
“The cat was already out of the bag. It’s not like I could go back.” Tom joked.
“You two also just adopted a couple dogs, right?” Jimmy asked, pulling out another picture of you and Tom with your two rescue staffordshire puppies. The audience let out a series of awes at the photograph.
“So Hugo’s the fawn colored one and Marley’s the white one.” Tom stated.
“What kind of breed are they again?”
“They’re both English Staffordshire bull terriers. Tom’s got one named Tessa and she’s such a sweetheart. But we did an interview with puppies for Buzzfeed and decided we needed to get a dog.” You explained.
“And then we couldn’t choose just one so we got two.” Tom laughed.
“They’re our babies.” You joked, feeling Tom’s finger brush over the ring on your left hand which made you smile.
Cryptic Mystic: What’s Your Sign?
Many of us are fascinated by astrology and all things outer space related. The great unknown that is beyond the stars has been a hot topic for centuries. But, how did the zodiac begin? What makes astrological signs and the alignment of planets and stars so magical? Is it truly prophetic? Does your sign define your personality, past, present, and future? Or is this simply another product of the Barnum Effect?
So I’ll start by asking the obvious: “what’s your sign?” I’m a Leo through and through. While I’m skeptical about the claims of some astrological signs and their relation to my life on a daily basis, I do believe there is some truth here - as is with most things. This topic is one that I have been wanting to write about for some time now. I have always found outer space, stars, planets, etc. to be fascinating. As a child, I remember laying in the grass and watching the stars above me. In my little valley in the forest, I could see so many stars that wouldn’t be visible if I were in the city. I am so thankful I had that childhood experience of growing up somewhere where I could truly connect with nature and the simple things around me that most take for granted on a day-to-day basis. I still stargaze to this day, but I can’t see near as many as I once did in my childhood forest valley home. I’ve seen a plethora of shooting stars throughout my lifetime, two meteor showers, two solar eclipses, and plenty of unidentified objects that were likely satellites… or were they…?
One time when I was driving home from work late one night I saw something that befuddled me. As I drove down the winding 2 lane highway in the darkness of the night I saw what appeared to be a helicopter hovering right above the trees. Now, this area I was driving through was rural. There are few houses in those woods, but there are some. The backroads leading to the site where the “helicopter” was hovering are seldom traveled, especially this late at night. I began processing the event in my mind and questioning if it was a helicopter, why would it be hovering so low and what exactly would it be doing in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night. It just didn’t make sense. I thought about logical explanations and could only come up with one. There is the slim possibility that someone driving on one of the many backroads in that area may have got into an accident and was getting airlifted to a hospital. I’ve seen it happen before on backroads near there. Aside from this idea, I had nothing. By this point, I had obviously slowed down so I could get a better look. Hell, there wasn’t any traffic so it’s not like I was worried about causing an accident or anything. As I looked closer I noticed it wasn’t a helicopter at all. There were about 4-6 large bright lights shining down below the area that the craft was hovering over. The circumference of this craft was much wider than a helicopter - more circular. The lights were far too big and far too bright. Whether it was fear, shock, tiredness, or my stomach growling, I continued to drive on and leave the peculiar scene behind. Now, I know this has nothing to do with astrology or zodiac signs, but it is an interesting story nonetheless.
In reference to zodiac signs, I find that descriptions of a Leo with my particular birthdate are genuinely pretty accurate when describing my personality and conflicts. However, the daily horoscopes are definitely not accurate in my experience. I will say that when I read/listen to them I try to apply something positive from the reading to my daily life. I engage in a deeper thought process and practice mindfulness throughout the day, keeping that positive focus within my mind on the positive message I am supposed to be implementing into my day. I have also found that compatibility readings have been somewhat inaccurate as far as certain zodiac signs getting along or not getting along with other zodiac signs. The biggest obvious red flag for me is how many different sources there are. And guess what? They all say something different on the daily. If zodiac signs and horoscopes are supposed to be accurate, then why don’t all individuals who report them online all say the same thing - or at least something similar?? To play devil's advocate here, I did say earlier that I believe there is some truth to all of this, which is why it interests me so much and also why I believe in this stuff to a degree. There is a lot of magical and wondrous history to unpack in regards to the zodiac and horoscopes. So, let’s jump right in, shall we?
Interesting fact: the word zodiac is derived from Greek terminology meaning “circle of little animals.” We’re a circle of little animals - cute visuals there, eh? Hieroglyphs in Egypt dating as early as the 14th century BC were found to contain a circle of decans (constellations) depicting something that looks a lot like the constellations and zodiac symbols that we know today. In total there were 36 decans found within the temple.
During the first half of the first millennium, Babylonian astronomers created our modern zodiac. They also mapped the previous constellations that were seen in the Egyptian hieroglyphs but continued to add more as they were discovered. In the last half of the 5th century, the Babylonian astronomers divided the many constellations into 12 equal "signs” to represent the 12 months of the year at 30 days per month. Each sign contained 30° of celestial longitude, thus creating the first known celestial coordinate system. According to calculations by modern astrophysics, the zodiac was introduced between 409 and 398 BC and probably within a very few years of 401 BC. Unlike modern astrologers, who place the beginning of the sign of Aries at the place of the Sun at the vernal equinox, Babylonian astronomers fixed the zodiac in relation to stars, placing the beginning of Cancer at the "Rear Twin Star" (β Geminorum) and the beginning of Aquarius at the "Rear Star of the Goat-Fish" (δ Capricorni). Due to the precession of the equinoxes, the time of year the Sun is in a given constellation has changed since Babylonian times, the point of vernal equinox has moved from Aries into Pisces.
You’ll be pleasantly surprised, intrigued, or disgusted to know that all of this does have some roots within religion. The Hebrew Bible shows knowledge of the Babylonian zodiac. E. W. Bullinger noted that the drawings found in the book of Ezekiel were quite similar to the middle four quarters of the zodiac (Lion/Leo, Bull/Taurus, Man/Aquarius, Eagle/Scorpio). You read that right, Scorpio is noted as being an eagle - not a scorpion. Some say that the twelve tribes of Israel are correlated with the zodiac signs found within the Hebrew 12 month calendar. There is an argument that the position of the Israelic tribes around the Tabernacle from the book of Numbers correlates with the exact order of the zodiac, with Judah, Reuben, Ephraim, and Dan representing the middle signs of Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, and Scorpio, respectively. It is shocking how I have heard religious people in modern times talk about how this is all a bunch of garbage, even though some of this is literally correlated with items from the Bible.
To explain daily horoscopes and the connection between the stars, planets, and our zodiac signs, you must engage in a bit of math (yuck). When planets and constellations of the zodiac would align, the Babylonian astronomers of that time would note the experiences that people had and found similarities. These experiences, along with the position of the Earth, Sun, Moon, and constellations and the positions relative to the zodiac signs were stored within a catalogue. This went on for several years and is essentially what began our modern-day daily horoscope. However, it is my personal opinion that a lot of these “professionals” who have their own magical websites where you can get a free daily horoscope, just make shit up to sound interesting. That is obvious by the previously mentioned differentials found within each page. I encourage you to do a quick Google search and you’ll see what I’m talking about. This ties into the belief that the Barnum Effect is in play here. You’ll remember the Barnum Effect from last month's blog. If you haven’t read the June 2021 blog The Imaginarium of Barnum, I suggest you head there next to get a deeper understanding of what I’m talking about before you continue reading. Much of what is broadcasted in daily horoscopes, zodiac sign descriptions, and even within mediumship and tarot readings is full of extremely vague generalities. Because the information is presented in such a vague and generalized way, it then becomes an instance where anyone could apply any of the information to their life in some way. So as you can see, there is some psychological manipulation at play here. Now, I am not saying this is true for all who present the information. I will say that there are A LOT of shams out there. I have seen far more fake sites/readings/etc. than I have seen legit ones. If I had to give a percentage from my personal experience, I’d say about 85% of what I’ve seen is bullshit. But you choose what you believe at the end of the day. I just ask you to keep an open mind and a wise eye about you when scanning the web for horoscopes, zodiac information, tarot, and mediumship.
All of this information is interesting to stew on within your mind. I hope that you learned something new. I know I did when I was researching this topic for the blog. The religious ties were the most surprising thing to me. What did you find most interesting? Drop a comment under the blog on Tumblr or under the Instagram post for this month’s blog and let me know. Tonight if you are able, take a look at the stars and see if you can find the constellations. The plethora of shapes within the brightest stars are brilliant to gaze upon. Who knows, maybe you will find your zodiac constellation. Maybe you will depict a new constellation on your own by combining different combinations of stars. Or maybe you’ll see something that you can’t explain…
Chapter 17 -- Perfect Harmony | Charlie Gillespie
Summary: Emily Fox is a talented 17-year-old with a passion for all things music. Her dream is to become a successful singer-songwriter one day. But to achieve that dream, she needs to get into one of the most prestigious music schools in her district – it’s all been part of her plan since she was six. Sadly enough, those schools cost a ton of money that her parents don’t want to invest. They don’t even want her to pursue her dream. So, now Emily’s hustling, working at the music store to save up to get into college. That’s until she meets Charlie, an annoying seventeen-year-old boy with the same dream as her. The only difference is, he’s just doing it. He doesn’t need a fancy college to pursue his dream to become famous with his band. He just writes his songs and books small gigs here, there and everywhere. Will meeting Charlie defer her from her dream college, or will he actually help her achieve the dream?
Pairing: Charlie Gillespie x OC (Emily Fox)
Warnings: mentions of death, sexual assault
Important note: the characters of Charlie, Owen, Jeremy and Madison are based on the characters they play on the show and i do not own their names, only OC are mine. The songs aren’t mine either, they’re all from the show except for one.
~|Emily Fox|~
Charlie has not left my side since Friday and it is now Thursday. Besides splitting up for school, he’s been stuck to my side like superglue. And even during school, he didn’t leave me alone one second by constantly texting me cute messages or hilarious memes to make me smile because according to him, knowing I’m smiling makes him smile. I don’t know how I deserved to meet a guy like Charlie. “Romeo sending you cute texts again?” Madison’s voice makes me jump. “No, he’s sending me hilarious memes,” I show her my phone screen as she sits down at our lunch table, and she cracks up after a few seconds. “He’s been sending me at least one every hour.” “Aah, love language of the modern day,” she sighs dreamily with an amused smile on her face. She then fishes something out of her backpack and hands it to me. A piece of paper with Emily and The Foxes written at the top in cursive. Live at Open Mic Night, and then the address of the Music Store. “I took the liberty to create a flyer for your gig on Saturday. So many people have reacted to your post on Facebook and Instagram.” Madi is way too excited about this. “How many people?” I cringe, not really wanting to know, but I want to be prepared anyway. “A few five hundred.” I gulp loudly. “That’s a lot of people.” Madison gives me a sympathetic look, knowing that would stress me out. “I don’t know if I can perform in front of that many people.” “Emsie, you have a great band that’ll back you up no matter what. You saw what they did last Friday with your song for your uncle Bobby! They were there for you even though you never rehearsed the song. They got you.” Her words do sound reassuring, but it doesn’t calm my heart down enough. “It still makes me want to puke,” I reply with a giggle, and Madison laughs too, if not out of pity. “I did start writing a new song last night with Charlie.” I grab my songbook, open it to the page and hand it over. Madi looks at it for a second. “It’s for Uncle Mitch,” I inform her, but I think she already knows. “This sounds beautiful, I bet you and Charlie have come up with a great melody for it.” “Not yet! We’re going to work on that tonight. Sometimes he comes up with the melody first, but for this one, we wanted the lyrics right before we added the melody or the beat.” “I don’t understand anything about songwriting. But you’re the expert, so,” Madison raises her hands, making me laugh. After lunch, Madi and I head to our lockers where I find Jake leaning against mine. My heart beats faster, but not in a good way, and my hands become clammy, my body freezing entirely. Madison even bumps into me because I’d stopped so abruptly. “Oof, Emily, warn a girl before—” she stops herself when her eyes land on what I’m looking at. I’d told her about what happened at the party last week. “I swear to God…” she grumbles while rolling up the sleeves of her jumper, ready to charge forward. “What are you going to do, Mads? Punch him? Not a great idea,” I tell her in a hushed voice. “We got to do something for what he did to you, Ems! He harassed you!” I glance around to make sure no one heard her angry whispers. “Charlie already punished him enough by nearly punching him. I think he learned his lesson.” A shiver runs down my spine at the thought of Charlie’s dark, angry eyes. “If he learned his lesson, what’s he doing at your locker?!” I shrug, turning back to Jake. “I don’t know, let’s find out.” Madison wants to start arguing, but I’m already charging forward towards Jake. “Can you move, please?” I raise my voice, hoping it’ll give me some power. “Emily, hi,” Jake breathes out in a blind panic. “What do you need?” I ask as he moves out of the way, so I can get into my locker. “I just wanted to check up on you. I know your uncle’s passing was a year ago.” “It was a year ago last week, dumbass,” Madison chimes in angrily. “I’m sorry, I-I didn’t know,” he stutters, glancing from Madison to me. “Yes, you did, Jake,” I tell him, “You broke up with me exactly a year ago on this day after a week of me not being able to function because of my uncle’s death. You know all-too well.” “Yeah, dumbass!” Madison hypes me up with her interjections. “So, stop bothering me and get back to your girlfriend.” I grab the book I need from my locker, slam it shut and then walk away from Jake with Madison in tow. “I am shaking,” I whisper to Madison and she wraps an arm around me. “That was so good!” she whispers back, and we both head to our next class together. I can’t believe I just stood up to Jake like that. Something in me definitely wanted to punch him, but I kept my cool. I wish I punched him though.
“I nearly punched Jake in the face today,” I tell Charlie when we’re in my bedroom after school. I don’t have a shift today, so Charlie and I decided to chill in my room instead to work on our music. Mitch did have one rule though; leave the door open. “What?!” he asks in a surprised squeak. “Yeah, he was waiting at my locker after lunch, saying he wanted to check up on me because,” I lower my voice for the next part, imitating Jake, “He wanted to check up on me because he knows my uncle’s passing was a year ago today.” Charlie furrows his eyebrows. “Jake sounds more like,” he squeaks out the next words as if his voice hadn’t dropped yet, “I’m checking up on you, Emily, because I am a jerk,” he goes back to his normal voice, “You know, because his balls haven’t dropped yet.” His comment makes me laugh. “Anyway, Madi was there too and she was like ‘It was a year ago last week, dumbass’ and then he stuttered a stupid apology, being like,” I cough and higher my tone, “I didn’t know.” “That’s better,” Charlie comments, plopping down onto his stomach on the bed, propping his head up with his hand, looking up at me. “Thanks,” I say proudly, “And then I was like ‘You did know, Jake. You broke up with me a year ago’, and Madi was like ‘yeah, dumbass!’ and then I went ‘So, stop bothering me and go back to your girlfriend’ and walked away but I so nearly punched him!” “You should’ve punched him,” Charlie agrees with me, and I halt in the middle of my room, right in front of him. He gives me this amused, smug grin, which just makes me proud of myself. His smile then turns to a scowl. “I wish Jeremy would’ve let me punch him.” “What would that solve, big guy?” I squat down to his height, placing my elbows on the bed. “Nothing, I’d just like to punch him.” I smile and plant a kiss to his nose. When I get up again, he captures me by my wrist, stopping me from walking away. “Are you okay? I can imagine seeing him wasn’t amazing after what he did to you.” “I’m fine, I had a minor panic when I saw him at my locker, but I’m fine.” “Come here, let’s cuddle!” He rolls onto his side and pulls me down. “No, Charlie, we have to finish this song!” I object but let him pull me next to him anyways. “Cuddle first, then we’ll work on the song.” We’re facing each other, our foreheads pressed together. His fingers reach up to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear; a habit of his I’ve come to adore. “You’re beautiful, do you know that?” I roll my eyes at his compliment but can’t help the blush appearing on my cheeks. “You’re pretty too,” I reply instead, which makes him frown. “I am not!” He now just looks like an angry puppy. “Yeah, you are,” I tease. Charlie’s mouth drops open, eyes widening, and before I know it, his fingers attack my stomach with tickles, sending me into a laughing frenzy. “No, stop! Stop!” I wheeze out, trying to tear his hands of me. “Char, stop!” He obeys, and as my laughter dies down, I can’t help but notice the way he’s looking at me. A feeling of love and adoration fleets throughout my body, but my brain doesn’t dare to give my lips permission to say those three words at the tip of my tongue. It does, however, give them permission to take away the space between mine and his. “I’m so happy I met you, Em—” I know he nearly calls me ‘Emmy’, but stopped himself before he could. “Like, so happy,” he adds instead and kisses me again. Now I pull away after a few seconds, like I needed his lips to mull this over. “Charlie…” I whisper, combing away strands of hair from his forehead. “Call me Emmy.” His breath hitches in his throat before his lips curl up into the most beautiful smile I ever did see. “I’m so happy I met you, Emmy,” he repeats and then just kisses me again as I relish in the feeling of being able to hear that nickname again from a person I love.
After a cuddle and make-out session of about an hour, Charlie and I detangle – much to both our dismay – and start working on our song for Saturday. The one for Mitch. We’d come up with pretty much everything, it just misses a bridge. “What if we mix the pre-chorus with that second verse?” Charlie suggests, and starts singing. His voice raspy and low. “The times that I doubted myself I felt like I needed some help Stuck in my head, with nothing left” I join in now, our voices intertwining. “And when I feel lost and alone I know that I can make it home Fight through the dark” He smiles at me, “High note, go for it,” he says quickly, leaving the last line to me. “And find the spark,” I hit the high note effortlessly. “Yes!” Charlie exclaims excitedly, “Yo, I got chills, literal chills.” He shows me his arms, filled with goosebumps. “I can’t get over how talented you are, Ems.” He’s careful with the permission of the new nickname, I see. “Same goes for you, Charlie,” I compliment him and peck his lips as a reward of some kind. “Now with some guidance of the guitar, so we can show it to the boys tomorrow?” Charlie nods and grabs the guitar he brought from home or the garage. I haven’t talked to him about home yet. I’m too scared to. We sing it once with the guitar, and then start thinking about other instruments. “Let’s start with a bit of piano?” Charlie suggests, “And just you singing?” I nod my head in agreement. “Drums, electric guitar and bass join in at the chorus, but we don’t sing yet.” I raise my eyebrows at him, not entirely sure about that idea. “It’s your song for your uncle Mitch, Ems,” he reasons, and I can’t argue with him. Not that I don’t want to, but because he simply continues. “I’ll take the second verse?” “And Jeremy and you duet the pre-chorus, and then second chorus is all of us?” I chime in. “And we’ll alternate on the bridge?” Charlie nods his head. “Jere can guide on piano on the bridge.” “And you can hit them high notes during the last chorus when the boys join in again?” “Uhm, yeah, sure,” I reply, unsure about the high notes. I can hit a few, but I think he might overestimate my abilities a little. “This gig is going to be awesome, Emmy!” he exclaims excitedly and jumps up from the bed. “It’s a nice warm-up for my audition in a week,” I tell him absentmindedly as I write down all our ideas in my notebook. “YOUR AUDITION IS IN A WEEK?!” he yells loudly, making me jump. “Yeah, didn’t I tell you? Not this Saturday because Open Mic Night, you know, but the Saturday after that.” I don’t even look up at him until I feel the bed dip down. My eyes glance up at the boy kneeling on the bed in front of me. “You didn’t tell me that. You want me to be there?” He takes my hand in his and presses kisses to my knuckles. “Of course. I doubt I can do it without you supporting me from the sidelines.” His lips curl up until they very nearly reach his ears. “But first, Open Mic Night.” I turn to my songbook again and feel him kiss the top of my head before he gets off the bed again. His excitement is winding him up again, shooting balls of energy through his body until he becomes one. He even radiates that excitement when we have a band rehearsal on Friday when we show the boys the new song. “That sounds awesome, Emily!” Jeremy compliments giddily when we’re done explaining and showing. “Shall we open with that one?” All three of us agree with that idea. Then Charlie kisses me on the cheek when he walks past to grab his guitar. “Then Perfect Harmony?” he suggests, playing the first chords of the song on his acoustic. “I would end with Now or Never,” I chime in with my idea, which everyone agrees to. “Flying Solo third and Finally free straight after?” Owen goes on while I write them all down. “Are we allowed to play five songs?” Jeremy then asks, “I mean, we only played one the last time.” I feel one corner of my mouth tug upwards into a smirk. “I work here, Jere, of course we can.” A giggle eludes from his mouth. I love the boys’ excitement about everything. They often remind me of a huddle of excited puppies or curious squirrels. “Any other song we want to add?” “Ooh!” Charlie exclaims excitedly, “Do you want to do the song you played to that girl?” “Wake Up?” I ask, and he nods vigorously. “I mean, sure, but it’s been a while since I played that and it’s just piano though?” “It could be the song we play to emphasize the Emily in Emily and The Foxes?” Owen suggests, to which Charlie just nods his head again. “I’m not going to sing a song without you guys,” I tell them and move over to the piano. “Then we’ll add some drums and bass,” Jeremy sums up, and Charlie coughs as to tell his buddy not to forget about him, “And guitar.” “I mean… If you guys really want to do that…” “Yes! Babe, that song is amazing!” I’m a bit taken aback by the pet name Charlie uses. He suddenly goes from excited puppy to solemn, shy Charlie I’d seen appear a couple of times the first few days of meeting him. “That’s the song you played when I first laid eyes on you.” While Owen and Jeremy let out an ‘aw’, mostly to tease Charlie, I think, I smile up at Charlie. “It definitely has potential for a good Emily and The Foxes song, I guess?” I play the first few notes on the piano, being reminded of the song I wrote with Uncle Bobby. “And how about that Sirens song?” Owen asks, which makes me stop playing abruptly. “No, we can play Sirens at rehearsals, but not at gigs. I want to keep that song for us,” I answer determinedly. Owen simply nods, understanding what that song means to me. “So, for Saturday it’s Bright - Perfect Harmony – Flying Solo – Finally Free – Wake Up – Now or Never?” Jeremy asks, just for reassurance. “Yes,” Charlie and I say in unison. I’m still a little nervous about Wake Up, but I’m sure we’ll be fine after a couple of rehearsals. We even nailed Flying Solo after rehearsing for an hour and I know Wake Up by heart. “Are we nervous for our first official gig? Because I am,” Owen laughs nervously, wringing his hands. I pat the spot beside me on the bench in front of the piano, which he then takes, sighing nervously. I play a couple of notes, letting the melody flow out into the room. “I’m nervous too,” I tell him softly, “But I know as long as I have you guys, nothing can go wrong because you guys have my backs. Always,” I look up at him, but don’t stop playing. Owen offers me the sweetest smile ever. “We have each other’s backs, always.” He nods his head agreeingly. His arms snake around my waist as he hugs me sideways, and before I know it, Charlie has his arms around my neck and Jeremy’s hugging Owen. “See, I told you,” I whisper to the boy next to me. “We’ll be fine,” Owen reassures himself more than me, but it does work for me too. No matter what happens. We’ll always have each other. We’ll always be more than a band.
Section 1 – Who were you?
Think back as far as you can. What is the first memory you have? I think meeting my (now) dad for the first time when he and my mom were dating. I was very upset because he was short and that’s not what dads were supposed to look like in my 3 year old eyes since my bio dad was super tall.
What is something you remember enjoying very much as a small child? Playing Barbies, watching Barney, Happy Meals, being with my grandma.
How old were you, when you made your very first friend? Probably preschool.
Are you still friends with this person today? Facebook friends, yeah. Real friends, no.
Was there a story somebody read or told you that has stuck with you? No one ever read to me after I learned to read for myself so one day I was sick and I came home and curled up with my mom on the couch and asked her to read me a Little Mermaid book I had and she did, even though I had to get up to go shit myself halfway through and it meant a lot to me at the time.
What is something you get an immense feeling of nostalgia from? Hannah Montana for some reason. It was my favorite show and we didn’t get the Disney channel so whenever we went to a hotel, nobody could tell me fuckin NOTHING because we were watching Hannah Montana whether they liked it or not.
As a child, were you a sore loser or a sore winner? I was the only child for 8 years and then the oldest after that so I never lost at anything and now when I do, I feel like I'm the biggest piece of shit loser there’s ever been. So that’s fun.
Did you go through the "naked phase"? I learned that you didn’t have to sleep in pajamas and you could just sleep naked so I did it for a while but then realized that I much preferred pajamas.
Which television shows do you watch the most as a child? I loved TV so basically all of the 90′s/early 2000′s shows there were.
Did you play with siblings, neighbourhood kids or by yourself? Either with neighborhood/school kids or by myself. I didn’t ever really have siblings who weren’t my kids, if that makes sense.
Is there something you really miss from your childhood today? I miss back when everything was simple.
Section 2 – Likes and interests
Would you ever like to try competitive pinball playing? Ummm, no.
Do you knit, crochet or cross stitch? I’m trying to teach myself to crochet.
Have you ever, or would you like to attend a gaming or comic convention? No thx.
What's your opinion on online multiplayer games? I really liked Among Us for a while there but I don’t really enjoy how rude everyone is on online games.
Do you like to go cycling? If so, where? Uh no.
Have you ever tried woodturning? If not, would you like to? Never tried it, don’t really have any desire to, but it can be relaxing to watch!
Do you enjoy drawing? If so, what do you usually draw? I do! I usually draw graphics for YouTube videos or doodle over Instagram photos, draw things to put on shirts with my Cricut, etc. I use my iPad for so many things.
Have you ever attended a painting class? If so, what did you create? I haven’t but I would like to!
How about a creative writing course? If so, did you get any feedback? I took Creative Writing literally every year it was offered in high school and I always got awards for having the top marks in the class.
What is your favourite form of exercise? No thank you.
Section 3 – People
Who is the most important person in your life (besides yourself)? My husband.
Do people generally approach you easily? I think so!
Do you get along with people well? If not, what's the problem? Yeah! I’m pretty friendly and easy going.
Do you enjoy being in crowds or do you prefer your own company? I would much prefer my own company than crowds.
Which one of your friends have you known the longest? I still talk to the girl I was best friends with in the 6th grade on occasion so like 17-18 years?
Do you find it easy to make friends now? If not, what makes it difficult? As an adult who works from home, making friends is hard as fuck.
What is something about people that annoys you? Something I've noticed in recent years is just how entitled and greedy everyone is. Everybody wants something from you or for your skills to benefit them without them putting in any work or paying you for your time. It’s just gross.
What is something about people that you really like? We have really, really harsh winters and if you ever find yourself in the ditch for whatever reason, there will be a lineup of cars stopped behind you to help you push it out or let you chill in their car while you wait for a tow truck. On the really bad blizzard days, there are groups of men in big trucks that literally L I V E to go around and help pull people’s cars out of the ditch. It’s the only time I feel like there’s actually a sense of community around here.
If you live alone, what would be your criteria for a roommate? I honestly would never have a roommate because they could either be your friend or a stranger and living with friends is a good way to ruin a friendship if your living styles aren’t similar and living with a stranger just sounds like a nightmare.
How about criteria for a spouse, if you're single? I am married but my criteria was honestly that I just wanted him to be kind and funny and I got that tenfold with my husband.
In general, what's your attitude towards people? I can’t stand to be around grumpy people. If all you do is gripe and complain about literally everything, I’m out. No thank you. Why is your hobby being angry? Take up knitting or something for christ’s sake.
Section 4 – Habits
What is something you do every day without fail? Baby talk the dog and snuggle with Beebs.
What is your typical breakfast? I’m a leftovers for breakfast kinda gal but lately I’ve been having a bagel and watermelon.
Which article of clothing do you like to wear the most? I loooove me a good baggy T-shirt and booty shorts.
Is there a TV show you watch habitually? We’re currently watching Unhhhh while we eat dinner every night, haha!
Where do you usually spend most of your day? I really only sit in 4 places--bed, the couch, my makeup/work desk, or my sewing desk. Depends on the day which one I’m at.
Is there a product that you do not want to run out of? Moisturizer. I’m a dry son of a bitch.
What is your preferred mode of transport? Car!
Do you usually have something playing in the background when you're home? Nah. I’m in silence a lot of the time.
Where do you usually get your groceries? Walmart for the bulk of it, a local grocery store for the specialty items, and Target if we ever run out of something midweek because I cannot handle Walmart more than once a week.
How often do you go to your local park? Like once or twice a month in the summer!
Which of your hobbies do you indulge in most often? Sewing and Sims currently!
Section 5 – Favourites and dislikes
What is your favourite fruit? Watermelon!
How about your favourite berry? Strawberries are the only berry I like.
Which food do you highly dislike? Fish. It’s all disgusting.
What is your favourite song, and why? I hate this question. Who can pick one definitive favorite song out of the bajillions of songs that have been written??
What is a movie you cannot stand? Anything with Seth Rogen in it, any movie that's got a 3+ after it (looking @ you, Fast & Furious), and all the fuckin’ superhero movies that have the same ‘ah yes, this undefeatable bad guy that we have absolutely no chance against and will undoubtedly kill us all--but we’re going to pull through at the last second with the power of friendship!’ plot line.
Which trait in a person do you find most appealing? I don’t know how to describe it--certain people just have that spark and you can always tell right away if they’ve got it or not and those are my favorite kind of people.
Which trait puts you instantly off? If they’re religious it’s an instant no from me, dog.
Who is an actor/actress who you dislike so much you can't watch them? I really, really dislike Tom Holland. I honestly think he’s a terrible actor.
What colour are your favourite shoes? White!
What is a smell that disgusts you to no end? B.O., on me or others. I just can’t deal with it.
Which door handle/door knob do you like the most in your home? They’re all the same.
Section 6 – Culture
What is something very typical to the culture of your home country? Apple pie and baseball are the only things coming to mind atm.
Do you enjoy art? If so, which form of art is the most enjoyable? I do! But I prefer art that you can look at and know the artist is incredibly gifted and/or has put in a ton of time and effort to master their skills. None of that million dollar paint smear on a canvas shit.
What is something about another country's culture you don't understand? I feel like other cultures take their family and their family’s approval way too seriously. That might be rich coming from someone who doesn’t have a very good relationship with their family but I just don’t understand what the point of making yourself miserable to make your family happy is.
Do you ever attend the theater? If so, which play did you see last? Last thing I saw in a theater was Shangela perform a drag show, haha!
How about the opera or the ballet? Nope.
Which dance troupe do you enjoy, if any? ...they still do that?
Do you attend concerts or gigs? If so, which band did you see last? Not as much as I’d like to as no one good really comes here very often. Last band we saw was X Ambassadors and Paramore!
Are you interested in foreign food? I’m not uninterested but I’m not super interested either.
If so, which country's cuisine do you enjoy the most? Chinese...albiet probably a very Americanized version of Chinese.
Do you enjoy stand-up comedy? If so, who is your favourite comic? I doooo! Bo Burnham and Drew Lynch are my favorites.
Do you contribute to culture in some way? If so, how? I try to? I’m an influencer so I definitely have a platform of a couple hundred thousand people. Not sure what exactly I contribute tho.
Section 7 – Charity
Do you volunteer your time to anything charitable? If so, what? Newp.
Do you donate money to any charities? If so, which ones? No. I don’t trust a lot of charities, to be quite honest. A lot of them are very shady and I’d rather donate money directly to someone who needed it rather than it getting tied up in a charity where it might never actually see the people they claim to be helping.
If you have pets, are any of them rescues from shelters? We adopted our dog from one of my husband’s coworkers but she probably would have gone to the shelter if we didn’t take her.
Do you donate your old clothes, linen etc. to charitable organizations? Yes! We almost always have a bag of donations in our trunk that we always forget to take to the thrift store when we go.
If someone you know is in need, is it in your nature to offer help? If I can, yes!
Have you ever donated Christmas presents to children of poor families? We used to do that when I was a kid.
Have you ever had to rely on other people's charity? One Christmas when I was really young I remember my parents signed up for a sponsorship through the Salvation Army where a family adopted us and bought us Christmas presents and Christmas dinner or whatever.
How do you feel about donating to charities endorsed by celebrities? I would never donate to a charity simply because it was sponsored by a celebrity but I guess its the easiest way for a charity to get the word out that they need donations.
Is there a charity you absolutely never ever will not trust? PETA, Salvation Army, Goodwill, and that breast cancer one with the horrible CEO.
Have you ever donated to a cause that had a person going door to door? No. I extra wouldn’t if someone came knocking on my door asking for money.
In general, what is your opinion on charity? I already did my rant about them, haha.
Section 8 – Entertainment
Which was the very first video game you remember playing? Ocarina of Time I believe!
Which was the very first film you remember watching? That I don’t remember. Maybe that Barney movie with the magic egg?
What is your go-to form of entertainment? TikTok usually.
Do you have a large collection of DVDs/Blu-Rays? Nah. We have a drawer but we usually stream everything.
How about music albums? Beebs collects vinyls!
Do you prefer to have your music on vinyls, tapes, CDs or digital? I prefer digital and Beebs likes vinyl.
When and where do you like to entertain yourself usually? Either the bed or the couch.
Do you ever binge watch shows? If so, what are you binging now? Usually! I’m sadly in between shows rn.
What kinds of books do you like to read, if any? I honestly don’t read anymore.
Is there a book series you're currently collecting? ..
Is entertainment something you prefer to enjoy alone or with someone else? I have my shows and then we have shows we watch together. So there’s a time and place for both!
Section 9 – Internet
Do you always have access to the Internet, wherever you go? If not, why? Yup!
Which website do you frequent the most? Website website? Google. App website? Instagram or TikTok.
Which search engine do you prefer and trust the most? Googs.
What do you use the Internet the most for? Social media or entertainment.
Do you judge people who have their phones out all the time? If so, why? Random people? None of my business. But if we’re spending time together and I’m trying to have a conversation with you and you're not paying attention to me because your nose is glued to your phone, I’m gonna be pissed.
If your connection goes down, what do you do? Go do something that’s not on the internet?
Is there something you wish you could do online that isn't possible yet? I still wish you could smell things through the internet.
Do you remember the first time you used the Internet? When was it? Yes! I believe the 2nd/3rd grade?
What was a website you used to frequent that doesn't exist anymore? I loved the Disney website with all the games.
Do/Did you ever have your own website? That was the thiiiing back in the day.
Isn't it great how much knowledge and info we have at our fingertips? It’s great but also overwhelming.
Section 10 – And finally...
What is something you consider to be highly controversial? Politics, apparently.
What kinds of jokes do you like the best? I love a good pun.
Is there a person who makes you laugh effortlessly? Oh definitely.
Which part of your body do you like the least? My eyes.
What's something random, out of context you remember from your past? I don’t do well with really vague questions.
Do you wear shoes indoors? No, I’m not a heathen.
What's the silliest thing you've worn on your body in public? I don’t think I usually wear silly things.
What's the most important thing in your life right now? Just spending time with my fam. Trying to get over this anxiety.
What is the most distant point on the planet that you've been from home? Florida.
Do you enjoy trivia games? If so, which one's your favourite? We love some Trivial Pursuit in this house!
Are you more logical or emotional? My emotions take over and then my logic brings it back in. Equal parts, baby.
You Break Up With Them: Monster Prom Characters
(A/N): This took me a month to write and it honestly shouldn’t have taken me a month to write but OMG I FINALLY MANAGED TO WRITE IT ALL AND IT’S OUT! I kinda feel like I messed up Polly’s and Vera’s part at the end, but that’s okay... I hope you guys will like these! (And be sure to check out the original artists for Miranda’s and Liam’s art, they did an amazing job! The links will be below them)
Miranda Vanderbilt (picture by stitcheddraws) :
The two of you were having what she thought was a romantic evening in a giant silverware store when you told her you needed to talk. She didn’t pay much attention at first, too preoccupied with all the gorgeous and amazing silverware that was surrounding her, and you were praying that it’ll lower her anger once you tell her your news… but as soon as the words “I think we should break up” fall out of your mouth, her happy expression turns to a stoic one while her turquoise irises stare back at your soul. It takes her a while to fully register what you said, her fish guards slowly walking over with their threatening tridents, until a wild smile breaks out of her lips and she chuckles.
“You can’t break up with me, silly.” She boops your nose with her index. “You know you’ll get executed if you do.”
She ignores the terrified look on your face as she turns back towards the golden spoon on display, having her eyes set on a pair with the letter ‘M’ and ‘(first letter of your name)’. You, on the other hand, tries to calm down from her threat and eventually ignores the guards to speak up your mind.
“Mir’, I’m breaking up with you. You have to accept that.”
She feels her heart bleed from how hard your words just stabbed her, and her bottom lip quiver in sadness. She concentrates back on the spoon and forces a smile to come out.
“What do you think of those spoons, (Y/N)? They have our initials on them.”
“Mir’, you’re not listening to me. I’m not happy anymore!”
She slightly flinches, her face turned away from you.
“You really wish to leave me?”
You sigh. “I’ve loved every bit of time I’ve spent with you, Mir’. But like I said, I’m just no longer happy.”
She looks back at you with a death stare. “Then perish.”
You don’t have time to add anything else that a trident is already piercing through your ribcage, the blood pouring out of your lungs to engulf your throat. You fall down on your knees as soon as the weapon leaves your body, and you give Miranda one last look only to see that she has turned away from you.
“Mir.. anda...”
She closes her eyes in pain from hearing you say her name with such a coarse voice, the loud echoing thud of your now lifeless body hitting the ground soon after. She waits a couple of seconds, in silence, until one of her guards ask her how they shall dispose of your body. She only opens her eyes again and spot the pair of spoons with your shared initials on them, the tears appearing on the corner of her eyes.
Her agonizing screams are all that can be heard in the store after this.
Damien LaVey :
It was in the middle of the night when you finally decided to break up with the prince of hell, having joined the boy earlier in a park to do some arson action, his favorite type of dates of all time. While you do enjoy to do crime every now and then, your feelings towards the boy have faltered through time and your chest has been heavy for weeks, the arson and killing not having helped at all. And so, even thought you weren’t going to say the fearful words tonight, your brain blurted them out of your mouth without your consent, and now the demon boy was staring at you in silence without even blinking. It doesn’t take long for his expression to twist into pure rage, his fist tightening while he tries to contain himself.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” You flinch from the anger despite expecting it. “Are you really breaking up with me!?”
“Damien, I’m sorry-”
“Don’t you fucking dare say you’re sorry.” You take a step back when he walks towards you, his finger pointing at you. “You better have a good reason to do this or I’m killing you.”
But is there really a good reason for breaking a heart?
“I just… I’m not happy.”
One of his eye twitches from your answer.
“I mean, my heart just… feels heavy all the time.”
“That’s it?” He squints his eyes at you while grinding his teeth. “That’s your only reason? You’re breaking up with me because your ‘heart feels heavy all the time’?”
“Well, yeah, I-”
“And you didn’t think you could have mentioned this fucking way sooner? That I could have helped you feel better?”
“I can’t fake my feelings, Damien.”
His silence following your words is only scarier than his usual screams, his red eyes seeming like they’re slashing your head off.
“Damien-”
“You know what? Fuck this shit. Just leave.” You give him a hesitation look when you see the pain in his eyes. “Are you fucking deaf? I said leave!”
You don’t wait for him to actually try to murder you to run away towards the park’s exit, unaware of his pupils following your leaving form. He looks down at the ground while shaking from the pain and anger, the tear pouring out of the corner of his pupils despite shutting them down.
He destroys the park with fire to cope with the reality of you leaving him, his yells of distress getting engulfed by the flames.
Scott Howl :
You wanted to wait at the end of Scott’s football practice before you tell him you wanted to break up so he could stay focus and have fun. You kept telling yourself it was to let him have a little bit more of happy time, but you knew it was only because you were dreading to break his heart. You knew how much your decision would hurt him, and how much hurting him would hurt you in return, but just going along with the relationship at this point was just hurting you even more and you had to do something.
And so, despite the fact that football practice hasn’t even started yet, or that Scott is looking at you with his goofy grin and his eyes full of life and excitement, you tell him the words you’ve been trying to get out for weeks now.
Your heart twists in a hurtful way when you see his pupils scream at you in pain, his lips quivering from sadness while his shoulders sink.
“But… but...” His throat lets out a whimper, which cuts through your soul. “But I love you.”
“Oh, Scott… I know you do.” The fact that you don’t say ‘I love you’ back seems to remind him that you haven’t actually said it back in a while, and it shakes him to his core. “It’s just… not enough anymore.”
His body starts to shake as he tries to control back his sobs. “Am I not a good boy?”
“Oh no, Scott… don’t think that.” You put your hand up to touch his cheek as a comfort, but you stop yourself at the last second and revert your movement. “You’re an amazing boy.”
He stares at your hand for a moment, wishing really hard that you didn’t stop your movement and were now petting his head like you would usually do.
“See, Scott, it’s not you the problem. It’s me.” He looks back into your eyes, wondering why he didn’t see this coming. “I really wish my feelings stayed the same… but I can’t control the fact that I’m not happy.”
He closes his eyes to try and stop the tears from coming out.
“And you deserve someone that can be happy with you, Scott.”
“I don’t want someone else.” He opens his eyes again, his pupils aching even more than before. “I want you… and I can make you happy. Remember how I can make you laugh all the time?”
You give out an empathetic smile. “You know I haven’t laughed in a long time.”
Your words hit his soul like a wooden bullet through his heart, and he almost doesn’t hear the coach’s whistle signify that it’s time to start practice.
“This is for the better, Scott.” He almost begs you to stay when he sees you take a step back, hesitantly looking back at him. “I’m sorry.”
He only gets to watch your leaving form for a few seconds before he gets dragged by one of his cousins on the field, another one putting his helmet on his head without him noticing. He walks over to his position without somehow stumbling over his feet, even though his mind is clouded by numbness. He doesn’t hear the second whistle that means the beginning of the practice match, but he does notice the ball getting thrown into his hands, his pupils staring at it as his body doesn’t move.
“Yo, Scott! Send the ball!” His cousin’s voice seems rather far away as he continues to stare at the ball. “… Scott?”
“They left me...” His bottom lip quiver again and his eyes watered, his claws tightening around the ball. “They left me…!”
He falls down onto his knees just as he hugs the ball as close as possible, his face distorted by his tears and his mouth letting out sobbing cries while his whole body shakes from the pain.
Liam de Lioncourt (Gif by trash-cass):
You didn’t know when would be the appropriate time to break up with Liam, especially since he made it clear that you were his first real relationship in centuries. Heck, you were the first person who made him get out of his shell and experience new things in life… like love.
His first true love.
Which makes you feel so fucking guilty. Especially when you would look at him with the intention of telling the hurtful words no one wants to hear, your brain screaming at you to stop every time you were about to do it. I mean, you make him so fucking happy, so why would you be selfish and take his happiness away from him? You’re a monster, but not a monster... right?
But the more you sit at this table with him, his eyes glued to his phone as he tries to find the best filter for his next Instagram’s picture, the more you feel your heart’s numbness worsening. And it’s at this moment that you know that if you don’t do this right now, you’re not only going to lose your chance to get happy again, but also trap him in a one-sided love story for who knows long.
And he deserves more than that.
“Liam.” You feel the anxiety rising inside your chest, but you don’t let it stop you this time. “We need to talk.”
He slightly looks up from his phone to quirk an eyebrow at you, never having heard you talk with such a serious tone.
“What is it?”
“I… I’m not happy anymore… so I think it’s best if we broke up.”
When he simply stares back at you in silence, his eyes blinking from time to time, your stomach flips and your thoughts get louder in your head. You try your best to silence them, and you open your mouth to try and ease the situation when he sighs in relief.
“Finally!” You frown in confusion, not expecting this kind of reaction. “To be honest, this ‘being in a relationship’ thing was getting way too cliché for me. I’m so glad you’re feeling the same way.”
“What-” You shake your head to dismiss your thoughts before you talk again. “I thought… you liked being in a relationship…?”
“Did you really think I loved posting all those couple’s pictures on my Instagram?” He lets out a small chuckle, his lips staying in a snobby smirk. “I only did it to make you happy. And really, I can’t wait to delete them. They’ve been polluting my artistic view for too long now.”
You open and close your mouth a few times, then give out a smile.
“Well, I guess I got worried for nothing. Maybe we can stay friends-”
“Now, if you’ll excuse me.” He gets up before you have a chance to finish talking, his phone in his hand as he does so. “I have a secret meeting to attend to.”
“Oh, okay.” You give him a shy wave while he leaves, slightly hurt by his cold demeanor. “I’ll see you later, then.”
His fingers clench around his phone when he hears your words, his chest burning in a rage from the pain you’re unaware that you’ve just caused him. But he can’t let you see it, no. He has a reputation of not caring about those type of things to keep.
But when he turns around a corner to be out of your sight, he can’t help but to look down at the picture he was about to post, the one it took last week. You were smiling at the camera and he was kissing your temple, a tree in the background. He thought you were happy, that you were in love. How long have you been feeling unhappy? How long have you faked your love for him? How long-
Tears fall down on his screen as he deletes the picture, his free hand squeezing the fabric of his shirt just as he feels his dead heart agonizing in silence.
Polly Geist :
The reason you waited so long to break up with Polly isn’t because you were afraid of hurting her, but rather because of the fact that she never gave you the chance to do so. You feel like she might know that you’ve been thinking about ending this relationship, and so she either kept changing the subject, starting random events out of nowhere or acting like she had to go somewhere. Then again, maybe she was also just being her random self who always wants to party and have fun…
… but seeing how she kept avoiding you for the party she invited you to in the first place, you beg to differ.
And so, at one point, where she was busy forcing a human drinking lots and lots of alcohol so she can possess them and experienced the consequences, you managed to corner between two drinks. She lets out an awkward laugh under your serious expression and she tries her best to ease the tension by putting your attention on something else.
“Hey, boo! Want some drinks?” She shows off the two that are somehow staying in her hands. “I got you some!”
“Polly, we need to talk.”
“Sorry, honey, I can’t talk right now.” She tries to get past you without flying right through your body, her smile slightly faltering under her stress. “I really need to get this human drunk so I can-”
“I’m breaking up with you.”
The drinks in her hands fall down unto the floor, but because of the music blasting the room, no one else notices the liquid spreading on the floor while Polly’s expression turns to a horrified one.
“No...” You take a step back when she tries to touch your shoulder, her hand staying frozen in the air after you do so. “Babe… I know you’ve been unhappy for a while, but... but there’s no need to break up!”
You shake your head at her, which only seem to make her feel more desperate.
“I… I can work on the things you don’t like about me! I can change!”
Your expression turns to a sad one. “Polly...”
“I swear! I’m not always like this… I… Please, don’t leave. I love you too much to lose you.” You feel your chest shrinking in pain when you see tears in her eyes, her voice starting to coarse. “And you know that it’s totally unfair because having my heart getting broken is totally how I died!”
“Polly, I don’t want to hurt you.” Her eyes give out a glint of hope, and you shake your head at her. “But if I stay with you, I’m only gonna hurt myself more.”
“But...” She tries to reach out for you again, and you step back a second time. “But… babe...”
“It’s over, Polly.” You give her one last look before you walk towards the exit. “We both deserve something better.”
She watches you leave while her whole spirit trembles in pain, the girl ghost feeling like her heart is shattered on the floor beneath her feet. She lets out a few cries that die under the party’s music, her head soon shaking to try and shove her feeling deep down in her soul. She gives out a wide fake smile, tears having disappeared, and she turns towards the crowd with her arms in the air and her tongue out.
“Who’s ready to do some drugs!?”
The excited screams barely make it to her ears, her brain already begging for the numbness.
Vera Oberlin :
You were completely terrified of breaking up with Vera. Mostly because you knew that if you managed to say the unbearable words to her, she would send a hitman to kill you… that is if she doesn’t decide to end your life with her bare hands instead. She loves you, you have no doubt of that, but she wouldn’t hesitate to end your life if you ever hurt her in any way. So staying in a relationship with her was definitely the wiser choice in the case of your own survival.
… but it wasn’t for your happiness.
And so, even though you knew the consequences of your action, you decided to let her know about how you’ve been feeling for the past few weeks, having asked her to join you in a public place in the middle of the day for some security.
“Ugh, I hate this place on Saturdays.” Her eyes skitter around the mall full of people, her face scrunching up in disgust. “Why would you want to come here? You know we only shop on Tuesdays.”
“Vera… um...” She turns her attention on you, her brows frowning at the sight of your terrified expression. “I… I need to talk to you.”
She gives out a smirk. “Did you choose this place because you thought I would try to kill you?”
She intended it as a joke, knowing how much you like her dark humor, but when you stay silent and avoid looking at her eyes, she starts to worry.
“Okay, (Y/N), what’s going on?”
You give out a shaky sigh, your fingers playing together for a few seconds before you look back at her.
“I… I wanna break up.”
Her heart sinks in her stomach upon hearing your words.
“… what?”
“I just… I haven’t been happy for a long time and…” She closes her eyes for a second, trying to contain her emotions. “And I think you deserve something better than this.”
“Bullshit.” You jumped up when she sends you a death stare, her upper lip twitching from rage. “You think you can break up with me and make some bullshit excuse like that?”
“No-Vera, it’s the truth, I-”
“You think you can break up with Vera Oberlin?”
“Vera-”
“Well, you can’t! You can’t break up with me! Because no one breaks up with Vera Oberlin! I’m the one who breaks up the relationship!” She puts her finger at your shoulder and slightly pushes you away, the snakes on her head snapping their mouths at you in anger. “In fact… I’m breaking up with you right now!”
You open your mouth in shock, your eyes giving out sadness. “Vera, I know you’re hurt, but there’s no need to act like this.”
“Watch me.” She stands up straight, looking down at you like you’re nothing. “Have fun with your pathetic life.”
She turns away from you and lets you watch her back as she leaves, her snakes still snapping their mouths at you until you can't see her anymore. As soon as she gets into one of the exit hallways, her furious expression breaks into sorrow. She bites her bottom lip to stop herself from crying, her hand already getting her phone out of her pocket. She takes a pause when she sees her home-screen of you and her, your arms wrapped around her neck with your head pressed against her temple as you both smile at the camera. She breathes in sharply, feeling her whole body yelling in agony at the thought that you’re no longer hers, and she forces herself to compose a phone number.
“Hey, it’s me.” She pushes the exit door’s as she talks, ignoring the sun hitting her face. “I’ve got a new target for you.”
If you won’t let her have you, then you deserve nothing more than death itself.
Bound By the Soul (Michael Langdon x Reader) REQUEST
A/N: This is a long one shot. I hope you enjoy.
Requested By: @michaellangyum “Reader and michael are soulmates and they can feel each others pain.”
Warnings: smut and language
Word Count: 3133
*****************************
Do you ever feel like there is a person out there for you? Neither do I. After having a shitty boyfriend in high school and another shitty boyfriend in college, there’s not the right person for me.
“There’s other fish in the sea.”
“There’s more candy in the candy store.” All the stupid little sayings, I would hear them all.
“You just haven’t found the right guy yet.” That was always a favorite. There are 7 billion people on this planet. How the hell am I supposed to find the person that was meant for me? My family always believed that there was someone out there for me, for everyone.
Some people would say I wasn’t looking hard enough, why bother looking? I have better things to do than to look for a dependent waste of space.
They say if you want to get to the top, you have to start at the bottom. That’s how I unfortunately ended up with Coco. Yes, she had Mallory and Gallant but apparently, she needed yet another slave. When I moved to L.A I wanted to be in Social Networking and Business Management. What I got, posting on Coco’s Instagram, because she can’t do it herself. At least I was able to relieve some stress of Mallory. My time working for Coco, I grew close to Mallory. Considering I had no friends when I moved here.
I was posting a photo of Coco on her “influencer phone”, while she could scroll on her personal phone. Mallory came rushing in with some puke green health smoothie. Encouraging her to drink the super juice, Coco spits in Mallory’s face. Coco is such a bitch. I hand Mallory a towel as she wipes her face.
All of our phones go off at once. It was a bomb warning.
“Its fine their fake.” Gallant, Mallory and I all look to each other with concerned looks.
It wasn’t fake. Now we are all on Coco’s private jet, Mallory sees that we are on auto pilot. It’s fine, everything is fine. We see the mushroom cloud explode through the air.
That is how we are here. The Outpost. An underground facility, safe and protected from the radiation and monsters. Purples and Greys, we were divided into two categories. Greys were servants and Purples were the elite. Poor Mallory was stuck being a grey. I would’ve wanted to be a grey with her, but here I am, a purple. Life at the Outpost was so damn boring.
At least as a grey, you cleaned, ‘cooked’ and didn’t have to be involved in boring gossip. Day in and day out. Our days consisted of cube meals, gossip, whining and the same fucking music every single day.
Stu and Gallant had “radiation” and were taken to get hosed. Stu didn’t make it. That night Venable, the bitchy prude who ran this place, served us ‘stew’ with fresh meat. Andre lost his shit when he found a finger in his stew. Half of us didn’t eat it or stopped eating, a few others ate it in all it’s glory. Like Evie, Gallant’s crazy starlight grandmother.
We were all in the sitting room, a melancholy sense in the air. Andre was sobbing in the corner with his mom, the rest of us stared aimlessly in the room with hooded eyes.
“Guys, do you hear that?” Emily stood up with wide eyes, we all look to her like she’s crazy.
“I don’t hear anything.” I said cocking my head to the side.
“Exactly! The music stopped.” We all looked around, the room silent. Gallant leaps out of his seat, the record player scratches as “The Morning After” plays. He runs to the record player gesturing to it ecstatically.
“This is the Cooperative! They are trying to send us a message!” Gallant proceeds to cover, terribly the song as it plays.
Suicide was a thought as “The morning after” has played for the billionth time in the last 18 months. We were zombies at this point. Ms. Venable announced that today was the last breakfast we would be having in order to sustain our rations. We were all in a uproar before Gallant and Mallory spoke of taking their chances out in the world. Gallant throws his food and plate causing it to shatter everywhere.
Before discipline could ensue, there was a perimeter breech. Lights flashes and sirens wailed. Ms. Venable’s face paled for a moment as her and Ms. Meade excuse themselves from the table.
“What the fuck is going on?” Andre was pacing all over the sitting room, Emily and Timothy were holding each other’s hands. We’ve been here for almost two years and there has never been a perimeter breech.
Come dinner time there was another one of Venable’s infamous stews, snake stew. Courtesy of Emily, who found snakes in her bedroom. I would’ve been adventurous if it wasn’t for the snakes coming alive and scaring the shit out of us.
“Who’s in your office?” Emily said, absent of snake related shell shock. Ms. Venable makes an irritated expression before sighing.
“I’m afraid that’s none of your business.” She excuses herself from the table. We all look to each other, dumbfounded by all the changes.
In the sitting room, we all remain silent. An eerie chill creeps up my neck, goosebumps pepper my arms. Odd, I’ve never felt that before. Ms. Venable makes her way out in front of us. The fire rages behind her. She stomps her cane, once, twice. Gathering the attention of us all. Before she could speak, a man walks in. He has no regard for personal space as he is inches from her face, he turns his head as if to say, ‘get the fuck out of my way’.
I felt a cold chill. I rub my arms subtly, no one else seems uncomfortable, other than the demeaning presence of this man.
His hair cascades down, illuminated by the light of the fire. He is clad in modern-Victorian wear. Nothing like we have to wear.
“My name is Langdon, and I represent the cooperative.” His voice floats into my ears like honey. After that, all I hear is ringing, as he speaks I see his mouth move, but I can’t hear what he’s saying. My mind is fuzzy.
My mind is clear when I hear Gallant. Volunteering like it’s the Hunger Games.
“I’ll go first.” Gallant shrugs. Langdon rolls his head, unenthused towards Gallant.
“And so you shall.” He looks at me for a long time before moving. I felt frozen, I couldn’t move, I couldn’t breathe. I can’t read his expression. He lets out a sigh before making his way back to Venable’s (his) office.
As if coming out of a trance, I can breathe again.
“What the hell was that?” Mallory bends down to whisper in my ear.
“I honestly don’t know.”
I wait for my interview with a large amount of anxiety. I’m alone in the sitting room as everyone makes their way to their interviews. Once done, most retire to their rooms for the night. I glance up to the staircase seeing Mallory running out of Langdon’s office. I scrunch my brows as she hurries to her room. Following a hunch, I follow her.
I knock once on her door, no response. I hear her sobbing so I enter without asking. She is curled up in a corner crying.
“Mallory? Are you ok?” Kneeling down to her, I place a hand on her shoulder. She sniffles before lifting her face, revealing puffy eyes and tear stained cheeks.
“No, there is something wrong with Langdon. He was pushing me, saying I had darkness inside me. There’s something clawing inside of me, trying to get out.”
“What do you mean there’s something wrong with him?” I shift myself to sit next to her against the wall.
“He, he scared me. His face was white, black veins all over. It was terrifying.” My eyes go wide, not questioning her. Mallory has always been level headed. She wouldn’t lie about something like that.
Some time passes, we are sitting and talking about everything. Since we’ve been here, we haven’t been able to talk like we used to. I sense that its getting late so I stand to retire to my room.
“I better get going. I wouldn’t want Venable to get mad at us.” We laugh a bit as I walk through her room to the door, when an awful pain stops me in my tracks. I let out a scream holding my arms out. I feel a fiery pain dragging up both of my arms, a sharp sting resonates.
“Y/n, what’s wrong?” Mallory holds her hands out to me, lost not knowing what to do.
“I don’t know Mallory, my arms, they hurt! It feels like they’re on fire.” I begin to cry from the pain. Looking at my arms I see no marks or cuts. I don’t know what is causing this pain. I scream as I sink to the ground, collapsing to the ground. I hear Mallory scream my name when everything goes black.
I wake up in a bed that is not my own. My mind is fuzzy, the sting in my arms long gone. I look around the room. No clue as to where I am. Slowly, I get out of the bed. Making my way to the door I hear someone descending the spiral stair case. Langdon.
“You’re awake.” I look to him, still as stone as he makes his way to me.
“What, why am I here? What’s going on?” My voice comes out shaky. He grins at me, standing tall in front of me.
“Let’s sit, I know you have a lot of questions.” His eyes penetrate deep into my soul. I think back to what Mallory said about him. I shift closer to the door as my hand creeps to the handle. His eyes glance to my hand before looking back up at me.
“I wouldn’t do that Y/n. Sit.” Langdon turns to some seats by the fireplace. I fight myself on leaving and sitting with him. Curiosity gets the better of me as I follow slowly behind him. He is seated before I am, eyes watching my every move.
He stares at me for quite some time before saying anything, causing me to squirm under his gaze. His fingers grace his chin in a thinking manor. I take note of the rings on his fingers.
“You felt pain earlier, didn’t you?” I look to him with wide eyes.
“Yes, I did.” Speaking softly, I don’t know if he heard me.
“Where?” Odd. I take a moment, trying to process what is going on.
“Um, both my inner arms, all the way up.” I rub my arms self-consciously. He hums in response before getting up and going to his desk. I watch his every move. He gets into a drawer, grabbing a knife. I feel a knot in my throat. My heart accelerates.
“I want you to trust me. Can you do that?” I slowly nod, scared of what is to happen next. Langdon sets the knife in his chair before untying the cravat on his neck.
“Trust me.” He uses the cravat to blindfold me. My heart thumps so loud I can hear it in my ears. I hear him sit back down into the chair. Some time goes by when I feel a sharp pain in my palm. I let out a yelp, thinking he just cut my hand. That can’t be possible, I don’t feel his hands on me.
I rip the blindfold off, looking at my hand, nothing. I look at him seeing the knife in one hand and a large gash in the other. I can’t comprehend what is going on. The blood dries as the cut heals.
“I understand this is very confusing to you, but I had to be sure it really was you.” I look to him with utter confusion.
“Do you believe in soulmates?” He gets up to kneel in front of me. It makes me question everything.
“My family does, but I don’t.” I speak, unsure of myself at this point. He takes my hands in his.
“Are you sure?” I don’t know. “Soulmates can feel the pain of their mate. If you don’t believe me, try it for yourself.” He cleans the blade and hands it to me. I don’t want to cut myself. However, I am curious. I take the blade and he grabs the blindfold, seating himself back in the chair. I try to find a spot that would be unexpected. I gently cut myself under my collarbone. He instantly brings a hand to his collar bone. The blood drips down my breasts and he takes his blindfold off.
“I knew it. Interesting location by the way.” Langdon makes his way to me, leaning into me. He lowers his head near my breasts, licking the blood from my cleavage and licking my cut. I want to be grossed out, but I’m not. The cut heals and he remains by my face.
“We are meant for each other. Made for each other. You feel my pain and I feel yours. We can feel each other’s emotions. I know you have felt my emotions. I have felt yours, the sadness and depression from being here. I’m sorry. I should’ve found you sooner and for that I am truly sorry.” He takes my hands and rubs his thumbs over them.
“I, I don’t know what to make of all this.” I take in a deep breath. He nuzzles his nose into my neck, causing me to close my eyes.
“I know my dear, it’s a lot to take in. I’m here now and I won’t let you go.” He looks deep into my eyes placing his forehead on mine. There is a sense of comfort. Part of me wants to leave, to run away, but I’ve never felt this calm and content before.
“I sense your confusion. I know you don’t understand, but tryst me darling.” He brings me down with him on the floor. We sit by the fire, content in each other’s embrace.
“I never wanted to be with someone. All my life, people have told me that there is someone for each of us. I didn’t want to believe them. I hated the idea, the men that have hurt me? I never wanted to find someone again.” I look down as some tears begin to fall. He holds my face in his hands, wiping my tears with his thumbs.
“I would kill for you, those men that hurt you? They don’t deserve you. You are a gem. I am here now, that’s all that matters. I will keep the pain away. I don’t want you to hurt anymore.” He brings my head to his chest, holding me tight. I feel like I could be here forever.
I don’t realize that I had fallen asleep. I awaken after sometime. I look up to Langdon. I lay in his lap. He looks down to me smiling. His arms wrapped around me.
“I didn’t want to wake you love.” His tone is so loving, I almost don’t believe it.
“I’m sorry to have fallen asleep Mr. Langdon.” I try to remove myself from him, but he holds me tighter.
“Michael, my name is Michael, I would love it if you called me that.” He strokes my hair, I hum in response.
“Michael, Michael Langdon. It’s a beautiful name.”
We migrate to the bed, he carries me in his arms and gently sets me on his soft duvet. He lays me down, taking a spot next to me. He strokes my arm, then my side. I smile longingly at him.
“I want to make you feel good Y/n, give you the love and pleasure you deserve.” He lifts my dress up as he runs his fingers up my leg, bringing the skirt with them. “I don’t want to push you, but I want to love you. Will you let me love you, make love to you?” He looks into my eyes, not moving any further.
“I, I think I would like that.” His pupils are blown as he grips my neck gently in his hands, bringing me closer to him. He kisses me slow. There is want and need in the kiss. I can feel his want, I can feel the adoration he has for me. I kiss back, showing him that I want this too.
His hands roam my body. Feeling heat everywhere they go. He climbs on top of me grabbing my thigh and lifting it to his hip. He kisses all along my neck leaving marks, he moans as the feeling of bites litter his own neck. I run my hands up to his hair tugging at his locks, I feel the tension on myself as well.
He slips a hand under my dress pulling my panties down. He slips to fingers into my warm cunt. I gasp, its surreal. Michael pumps his fingers into him, hitting my g-spot with every thrust. He kisses me hard.
My slick coats his fingers. He brings them to his lips licking them clean. He undoes his pants, springing free his hard cock. He looks to me, holding back the need and desire, I can feel it. I bring my hand to his cheek, he leans into it.
“Its ok Michael, I want you.” His shoves his lips onto mine in a bruising kiss. He then thrusts into me. A white pleasure. I can’t breathe. No one had made me feel like this before. I bring my hips up to his, in rhythm of his thrusts. I arch my back, throwing my head into the pillow. My hands go to his back, clawing red streaks along his muscles. I feel it too. He thrusts into me, long and hard.
“I’m close Michael.” I gasp out trying to ground myself by gripping onto him. His cock presses into my womb with every thrust. I feel my release coming. I cums inside me as my orgasm is enhanced. I feel his and he feels mine. Its an amazing amount of pleasure. We both moan loudly. He rests gently on me while still inside. His face in my neck. He takes deep breaths. My hand goes to the back of his neck, stroking his hair.
He slowly pulls from me, both of us shuttering from the aftershock. He lays down next to me pulling my body to his. Michael wraps his arms around me, locking me in an embrace.
“I love you Y/n, I won’t let you hurt anymore.” His kisses my hair and holds me tighter.
“I love you too Michael.” I do believe in soulmates.
Simon Vs Fan Fic: Chapter 6 - One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
Ao3
Leah came with me to Walgreens to get items to put into Bram’s care package. Abby and Nick were still asleep and Ian decided to go on home and sober up for tonight’s partying. She went into the store to start on my list because I called Bram to apologize.
“Hi handsome,” Bram’s voice comes with a layer heart and warmth that drips into my ear.
“I don’t deserve that today,” I start as I shuffle in the passenger seat.
“Stop, Si.”
“If I made you feel bad in anyway, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be, honest. What can I do to make you feel better?”
I scoff in guilt. “Here I am trying to apologize to you and you’re the one asking what you can do for me.”
“Simon,” Bram begins. “I know how hard this is, believe me. You have no idea how much Baltimore Nick has to listen to me talk things out. But what is important is how we communicate like we are now. When either of us is feeling something, we just need to let the other know. If I could hold you right now, I would tuck myself so close to your chest so I could hear my heart beat in your chest.”
“I miss you so much. I thought it would be easier, but I was wrong, it’s so much harder.”
“I made the same assumption too and it looks like I’ve been listening to Elliot Smith more and more. Which is counter-productive because the lyrics really are depressing. Remember this, Simon: you’re no longer alone in this, we’re in this together.”
“I’m glad you’re with my goofy butt, Bram. In spite of all my craziness.”
Bram exhaled and I swore I could feel his soft breath on my ear. “I wish you could see yourself the way I see you Simon. I see a man with perpetual sexy bedhead. I see your moon-grey eyes explore my face with beautiful awe. I see a man willing to do anything and everything for the sake of others at the expense of himself because that’s how much other people mean to him. I see a boy who I had eyes for since freshman year of high school. Look in the mirror, Si, through my eyes and you’ll understand.”
“I’ll work on that, B, I promise.”
“Simon Jacob Spier.”
“Abraham Louis Greenfeld.”
“I will see you soon.” He could feel Bram’s smile stretch across his phone as well as pang in his voice that was hungry for my flesh.
The ‘I love you’ chorus sang between us and I hung up. My screensaver of Bram popped up, a picture I screenshot from his Instagram. I barely kept any apps on my home screen so I could always stare at him when I needed him most. It’s such a strange gift, being able to affect another person’s mood only with the power of existing.
I left Leah’s car and walked into the Walgreens to find her reading a magazine on the floor.
“How’d it go?” Leah asked, not looking up from her issue of National Geographic.
“Exactly how you said.” I admitted, hand on the back of my neck.
“I swear to god it almost feels like I’m dating you guys too.” She replied, placing the magazine back on the shelf.
“How have you done it?” I ask her, looking for an honest answer.
“I don’t know, I’m not getting any out of it either,” she responds jokingly, standing up with my help.
“I’m serious. Leah.”
Leah rolls her eyes, “Do we have to do this in a Walgreens?” She starts to walk towards the food aisle, knowing the first item that will go into Bram’s care package. I catch her by her arm and stop her.
“We do…I just feel…ever since I knew I am going to propose, I’ve regressed into my high school self where I’m…an idiot and stumble over even small and easy things with you guys and Bram. You’re keeping me balanced, Leah, and I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Leah hugs me in the middle of the aisle as an older lady is looking at the greeting cards. She notices us and crosses her hands on her chest.
“You’re right, Simon,” Leah says, “you have regressed a little because you’re making me being a friend a big deal! Spier, are you going to regress to the point where you’re back in the closet?”
We laugh and walk towards the Oreos. Walgreens is a different store right when it opens. The employees still look like there is a sparkle of hope in their eyes. Leah and I discuss the pros and cons of double stuff verses regular Oreos when I finally tell her what I’ve been thinking since I knew I wanted to propose to Bram.
“Leah, you’re going to have to be my Best Person, you know that right?”
She shot me a confused look and smiled. “That’s how you’re asking me to be your Best Person? As a joking demand?”
“It actually seemed the most fitting way to do it to be honest,” I defend.
A large smile grew across her face. “You’re actually right for once in your life, Si.”
We checked out and I added the Double Stuff Oreos (I won that argument) to my care package that also had additional snacks, stereotypical college food, new CDs for him to listen to (yes we both still buy and own CDs), a pack of legal writing pads that he loves to use in his journalism classes, pencils and pens with his name embroidered on them, a framed picture of us from this summer, and a bottle of vodka, the only liquor that doesn’t make Bram too nauseated. We dropped it off at the post office and the worker seemed shocked to see two college-age kids in there at nine A.M.
“Sorry about last night.” I said on our way back to the apartment.
“You don’t really have anything to apologize for, you just got drunk and…Simony.”
“I know, but…I felt like we didn’t talk about how Abby and Nick felt really. Like I stole focus.”
“Well, you did,” Leah replied laughing, “but I think it was wanted. It didn’t seem like they wanted to discuss it.”
“I’ll make it up to them. I’ll cook breakfast.”
“I know none of us will say no to that.”
Once we’re home, Nick and Abby are awake and lounging in the living room. We all catch up while I’m cooking breakfast and they’re cleaning up remnants of the party from last night.
“So other than those major projects for school, I also have been commissioned to do a piece for another Off-Broadway show.” Abby finishes.
“Sounds like a good problem to have,” Leah says, throwing the solo cups into our recycling bin.
“Truer words have never been spoken.” Abby replies, sipping on water.
“So guys, breakfast is ready.” I turn around and have two plates ready to go for Nick and Abby and we sit at the former pong table. “View this as an official apology for last night.”
Both Abby and Nick tilt their heads in mild annoyance.
“Like we told you last night, nothing to apologize for. BUT!” Abby shouted, “We did gloss over the fact that you are marrying Bram!”
“Proposing to, yes, I am!” I shout back as I bring Leah and my plates. “Right now the plan is propose in Shady C over our break on our anniversary with rings provided by my Dad.”
“Ahhh! So we’ll all still be in the city!”
“I hope so, it’s at the end of January right before classes start, will that work for you guys?”
“For you and Bram? We’ll make it work,” Nick replies, stuffing egg and sausage into him mouth.”
“I also got his mom’s blessing when she visited last month and I’m still waiting to speak to his Dad but he is a hard man to talk to now that Ruth is in kindergarten.”
Abby stared at me with a dropped jaw as Nick reminded steadfast at eating.
“You’re asking his parents?! That is so cute!”
“I’m hoping to convince his Dad to come fishing to at least lure him up here.”
“Was that a pun?” Nick said, laughing.
“Not intentionally,” I reply.
The rest of our Saturday was stereotypical college student life: movies, booze, GrubHub order, some light marijuana use, more booze and then the bars that night. New Haven is a great New England town in the fall and the leaves crunched beneath our shoes as we walked to the second bar of the night.
“So I want to say this only once more and then I’ll leave it alone. You guys doing okay since the break up?”
Nick and Abby stared at each other.
“We really are,” Nick answered. “Bram was a huge help too, not to say that to make you upset, but-”
“No, no, I’m sorry guys,” I respond. “I shouldn’t have reacted like that and I have no right to. Bram is his own person and I shouldn’t be so…territorial.”
“You’re not territorial, Si,” Leah said between handing us our drinks.
“Yeah, I am. Or was. I don’t know. Last night took me back to the insecure Simon and I didn’t like that. I’m so, so happy Bram was able to help you guys, and I need to work on trust.”
“Si, we can’t really pretend to understand how it was like to be outed or come out in general,” Nick said with a sympathetic smile. “But if you actually have trust issues, they’re valid. It’s okay to feel feelings.” He finished, laughing. “That’s a weird sentence, but don’t be so hard on yourself.”
“I guess…I just…I think it all stems back from me thinking that…”
I haven’t ever really told anyone this ever, not Leah, not Bram, not Ian. I was weighing actually being honest as my friend’s concerned eyes stared at me as we walked to a table.
“I guess I have never felt like I’m good enough for Bram, like he will wake up one morning and realize he’s only been with some weird kid from his high school and discover that I’m not enough for him.”
There. It was out there. I finally said it. There was some relief in being honest about my feelings, especially something I’ve felt since Bram and I started dating. Bram has never made me feel this way, let me put that out there. It’s all my brain, all of my psychosis.
“Simon…” Abby pulled my hand to her, Leah placed hers on top, and even Nick put his hand on the pile.
It was already helpful to be able to say those things out loud and I think they understood that I need to get through those feelings myself, but their hands on my hand made me realize that I’m not alone, ever, no matter what. I know it’s cheesy but sometimes you need to hear the cheesy Hallmark card sentences.
“How could you think you’re not good enough?” Nick asked.
“You may be a weird kid from high school, but that doesn’t mean it makes Bram love you less.” Leah added.
“In fact, it probably helped you,” Abby finished as she flashed her Abby smile. “Simon, I know there’s nothing we can really say otherwise until you believe it yourself, but you’re a catch, Bram is lucky to have you just as much as you are lucky to have him.”
“Yeah, you need some self-esteem.” Nick said blatantly. After some stares from Abby and Leah, he continued. “I mean, you…naw, you need to work on your self-esteem. Cause if you don’t, the constant doubt and questioning will end up hurting you the most. And Bram may not want to stay around to watch you do that to yourself.”
“Easier said that done.” Leah said. “But he’s right, Si. As soon as you look at your relationship as a partnership instead of…however you look at it now, all of this doubt will go away.”
I know it wasn’t any business of mine, but I couldn’t help myself and asked.
“Was that why you two split up?” They looked at one another and now I felt like a dick. “Sorry, I’m just the worst person this weekend.”
“No, no it’s fine,” Abby said, sipping her beer. “We both had kinda the opposite problem. Too much pride.”
“Relationships are about give and take and I don’t think we ever found that rhythm. Both can’t give and not take.”
“It’s like if two tops tried to date.” I say, letting it slip out before stopping myself. Nick’s eyes bugged out as Abby started laughing until all of us were laughing at my dumb joke.
After that, the rest of the night was spent like we never left Shady Creek. Memories were talked about and conversation moved quickly and anytime a song came on that Abby liked we danced in the booth. Once the bar closed we swung by the late night pizza place and got some food while discussing the merits of Katy Perry’s latest album (I gave her an A for effort and Nick defended the album with the old ‘she’s hot’ argument).
The next day, I woke up to a text from Bram.
I was told today I can have that weekend off! I can’t wait to see you. :)
There’s no better way to start your day than having your boyfriend confirm a weekend together. Bram works part time at WBAL as their social media intern who they also make work most weekends. He gets to write the summary sentences of articles or links to the news stories on their website as well as respond to comments on their Facebook page postings. It wasn’t the most glamorous job, but it gave him experience and he liked that part.
I woke up Leah to sweet talk her into letting me borrow her car to drive to Baltimore and she said yes, but there was a price. I had to wake up to cook breakfast every morning until the weekend I needed it and I felt that was a fair trade off.
This morning, however, I didn’t cook breakfast and we all went to grab food together before Nick and Abby drove back to New York. When they visit, it never feels like we had enough time together.
“I wish we could stay longer,” Abby cutely pouted.
“I know I can’t convince you guys to stay in New Haven over New York, but I’ll never stop trying.” Leah responded as they hugged.
“So I’m assuming we’ll all see each other next during Thanksgiving?” I say.
“You know it.” Nick says as we hug too. “I love New York, but it’s nice to get out every once in a while, remember that there are smells other than garbage and smog.”
We laugh as I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket. It’s Bram’s Dad. I excused myself from the group.
“Simon, how are you?”
“Great,” I answer, a bit shocked. “How about you?”
“I’m also doing fine. So listen, I know you’ve been trying to get a hold of me and I thought I’d let you know that we’ll be in Boston visiting the wife’s family this coming weekend. If you were interested, we could try meet. I know you’ve been wanting to talk to me in person per your messages.”
I could hear a hint of annoyance in his voice, but as long as I annoyed him into at least seeing me, I can ask him. I didn’t want to ask either of Bram’s parents over the phone unless I absolutely had to, so I’m glad Bram’s step mom’s family lives in Boston.
“Yes, yes that sounds great! I was thinking, if you’re up for it, that we could meet in Provincetown and do some fishing?”
Did I sound as weird as I felt saying that sentence? I must have because all of my friend stopped talking and stared at me.
“I didn’t think you still had fishing in you, Simon. That sounds great, I will be sure to pack my poles.”
His tone was more relaxed after I mentioned fishing. Thank you Tracy Greenfeld.
“Super!” I jump and pump my arm at the audience of my friends. “Also, I know this will sound weird, but can you not tell Bram we’re doing this?”
There was a gut-wrenching pause on the line. I couldn’t say that sentence without sounding weird. Nick shook his head and smiled at me as I flipped him off.
“Okay,” he started. “Can I ask why?”
“Yes, but I won’t be able to tell you until we see each other.”
Another pause as I placed my free hand on the back of my neck. Abby had her fingers crossed and Leah leaned on the car waiting for the call to be over.
“Okay, I’m sure you have your reasons. I won’t tell him.”
Wonderful! I finally got him to spend some one on one time with me. Before I hung up, I gave Bram’s dad the information on where we’d meet to fish. Since speaking to Tracy, I had tried to find the best place in the area to fish and you couldn’t go wrong with Cape Cod.
“Fishing? You?” Leah said.
“Gotta make sure Elijah is in a good mood when I ask for his blessing. He loves fishing and we’ll be out in the ocean, so good views too? That’s important when you fish, right?”
“So you’re going on boat, alone, into the ocean with the father of your boyfriend of whom you’re going to tell him you’re planning on marrying his son?” Nick teased.
“Yeah.”
“If you disappear, I think we’ll start with Elijah.”
“Shut up and get back to New York.”
It was always hard to see my friends leave after they visited. Abby waved goodbye until they turned the corner to head back to New York.
"Can I borrow the car this weekend?" I ask hands folded in a begging manner?
"Duh," Leah said, rolling her eyes and following me back inside.
I couldn’t really concentrate the entire week, trying to figure out the best way to ask Bram’s father.
“Dude, just ask it,” Ian said to me. We were in our final acting class and in between scene studies of our classmates.
“I don’t think I can with Elijah.” I answer. “He’s…not scary, but he’s hard to read and that makes me nervous.”
“If he said no, would that prevent you from still proposing?”
I’ve been so focused on preparing what I’m going to do when I propose that I didn’t think of that part. Which is bad because I still don’t know where in Shady Creek I would take him or what I’d do. I need to figure that out soon, but first I need to get past this weekend.
“The thought of not marrying Bram is worse than Elijah saying no.” I answer. “I’d…probably still do it even if he didn’t say yes.”
Ian laughed, “Then why even ask him? Isn’t asking permission a dated step in marrying someone these days?”
“Yeah, but it seems right to do ask. When it comes to Bram, I want to make sure to do everything right so that the proposal is perfect and then we can plan the wedding together because as you’ve probably noticed, I’m not the best planner.”
“Dude, I think you’re doing well for winging it.” Ian said drinking some water. “Brammy is going to love whatever you do. Do you know how you’re going to ask yet?”
“Ugh…no.”
“He likes soccer, would you want to do it on a soccer field? Oh my god, you should! Then you can have Bram’s family and friends on Bram’s side of the field and your family on your side and you can have them stand as Forwards, Midfielders, and Defenders and oh! You and Brammy and both of your parents can be the Forwards!”
I stared at Ian with bugged eyes. He noticed and laughed.
“You’ve thought a lot about this huh, Ian. You sure you don’t want to marry Bram?”
“Don’t tempt me with a good time,” Ian joked back. “But Bram is missing something that I would never be ale to get past.”
“Boobs?”
Ian put his hand on my shoulder, “Boobs.”
Ian did me thinking the rest of the week. I really wish not everyone hated my high school idea because all of the significant places we were, we spent the most time in that damn high school. I can’t really propose in our either of our bedrooms because one there is not enough space if I invite people and two I’d probably get distracted and we’d just end up having sex and I’d forget to propose.
Would it be cheesy to do it in the parking lot when we had out first lunch and kiss as a couple?"
The more I thought about it, the more and more it did make sense. Bram still has his old car and maybe I could convince the manager to let us go into the store after hours.
“Hmmm…” Leah thought after I told her the idea. It was Thursday night and I we were waiting for our lasagna to finish cooking.
“You hate it.” I ask leaning back I my chair and headed back to square one.
“I don’t…hate it….but it also just doesn’t seem like the most romantic place to propose.”
You weren’t in the car with us when we ate Oreos and kissed while it rained.
“We really didn’t have a place outside of school. Our places ended up being in the lunch room or the fair or…”
That’s it. It was the place we built the foundation of our relationship. All of those moments happened at high school. And as weird or tacky others may feel it is, they didn’t have the relationship Bram and I had. They didn’t have the emails that both Bram and I pined over when we didn’t know who the other was. I have to ask him at Creekwood. It’s where Bram and I discovered each other.
“What is it, Si?” Leah asks as I have been staring into space.
“When I propose, it’s happening at Creekwood.”
“Si, I thought-”
“I know, everyone else thought it was a bad idea, but you told me to trust my gut about this proposal and my gut is screaming Creekwood. It’s the best place, it has our history. We were in the parking lot on a ferris wheel when he kissed me. How could it be anywhere else?”
Leah looked at me with loving eyes and let a smile grow on her face, very un-Leah like.
“What,” I started. “You’re scaring me.”
“I think you should do it.”
“Yeah?!”
“Yeah. You’re right, it all happened there and I know Bram would love it too.”
My stomach warmed and twilled and back flipped out of excitement. Finally got someone on my side with Creekwood and now I can even tell Bram’s Dad where I’m going to do it if he asks!
“Ah! I means a lot you are on board with this.”
Leah was quiet again and I even swear she was tearing up.
“Leah? You okay? Now you’re really scaring me.” I joke.
“I’m just so happy for you and Bram…Can you propose as soon as possible so we can all be happy together?!”
“I’m trying to make January come as fast as I can.”
I could hear both my Dad and Ian say ‘that’s what she said’ in my head.
Leah hugged me and made us watch a horror movie so she could, in her words, get out of this lovey-dovey mood.
I woke up on Friday and the feeling of happiness was soon overshadowed by my nerves of Bram’s dad. Luckily I woke up to a text from Bram.
I received your care package my amazing boyfriend. Thank you so much, I love it all <<33
Hey cutie :)
. .. … Hey handsome :) How’s your Friday?
Good. Kinda nervous
. .. … Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. Do you have an audition coming up?
Ironically, he wasn’t entirely wrong, so I won’t be entirely lying.
Yeah, it’s a really good role and I want it so bad
. .. … Then you’ll get the part! Once you set your mind to something, you get it! It’s how you got me. <3
You’re just saying that cause you love me.
. .. … True, but you’re also super talented. And super cute. You have me talking in fragments when I think about you too much
I’m always talking in fragments, you’ve been tripping me up since you were Blue. You’re already making me feel good about the audition.
. .. … Glad I can help. I love you, break a leg!
<3 <3 <3
It helped me get through the rest of the day, but I was super distracted in my acting my theatre history class and couldn’t focus. I fantasized about proposing to Bram alone. Just him and me and the ring. Then I pictured kissing him and running my hands down his back onto the curve of his butt. Bram would pull me close to him and smile between a kiss, loving when my hands found their way back there. It was good I was sitting as it would be embarrassing to walk in my basketball shorts.
I calm myself down and run home to beat Leah so that I could…uh…take care of myself after class. It had been the longest two months away from Bram and his good heart and beautiful body wasn’t making it easier. Once I threw away the tissue, I began packing my suitcase. Bram would have already packed last week for this trip had he been going. I smile and pack the Elliot Smith shirt he got me. I’ll need him there in spirit more than ever.
Leah and Ian came home together as to follow the same path as last weekend. I turn down drinking because I have to be up early to get to Provincetown.
“Know what you’re going to say yet?” Ian asks, chugging a beer.
“No, I think I’ll try to bring it up casually in conversation. When we talk, it usually finds its way to Bram. It’s really the only thing we have in common.” I say laughing.
“Trust that gut, Si, you got this.” Ian answered, crushing the can and letting out a loud burp. I looked to Leah to catch her legendary eye roll. But she didn’t roll her eyes. She was laughing. Strange, but I suppose people evolve. But does Leah evolve like that? Last year she would have scoffed and left the room.
“You’ll be fine, Si. Go into it like you did with Tracy and you’ll be alright.”
With that, they left to meet some theatre kids at a bar so I could sleep.
I dreamt about Bram. I dreamt we were back on the ferris wheel and that we couldn’t stop kissing. It was a great gift from the universe to give me that subconscious boost of confidence. It was interrupted, however, by my alarm. I got up and grabbed the keys to Leah’s car. She left them on the kitchen counter next to luke warm waffles and a note.
‘Use the Belgian waffles as fuel to get your man! – Ian’ ‘Si, the waffles were from me, but Ian helped stir the batter. There’s an ice coffee in the fridge for you. - <3 Leah’
I opened the fridge to a large cup and grabbed it with a smile. The four hour drive went a lot faster than I expected. Bram recently got into making his own playlists for me of music he found himself listening too. I loved everything he sent me, but maybe it’s because I know he picked it and I love him.
The one thing he did pick up from me was listening more to older music than current pop or hip-hop. 90s R&B was his jam at the moment and he also mixed in 80’s stadium rock. It was quite the eclectic mix that helped keep me awake along with the ice coffee. Bram also snuck in some love songs and I swooned quietly on the road towards the Atlantic Ocean.
I arrived early enough to meet Elijah at a breakfast place. I walked in to ask for a table.
“Simon!”
Or so I thought. Bram’s father was in a booth and waving me over. I wave awkwardly because I can’t help myself and I go to the booth to sit.
“Coffee?” He asked.
“Yeah, love some.” That was a lie, I had to pee but I underestimated that Bram’s father would be so much like Bram. Elijah poured me a cup from the pot left on the table the singular cook who also was the waiter.
“So how is Ruth doing? I can’t believe she’s in kindergarten now.”
“You and me both, Simon. She’s good, though she doesn’t like to be called Ruth ever since she started. She wants to go by Ruby now.”
“Kids make fun of her already? She’s in kindergarten.”
Elijah picked up his cup and placed it too his lips while his eyebrows answered. “Yeah, I guess that’s the way the world is headed.” He licked the coffee droplets off his mustache with this tongue.
“So, I as able to rent a ship, just us two. Bluefish Tuna. He’ll be ready for us in about forty-five minutes.”
“Simon,” Elijah started. “You said you would tell me why I couldn’t tell my son you were meeting me. Are you ready to tell me?”
Is this how Dads treat all guys who try to date their children? Dad wasn’t like this to Bram, was he?
“Y-Yes,” I tripped over my words. “I wanted to talk to you while we were fishing, but I can talk now.”
The cook came back with a plate of eggs and with extremely buttery toast.
“Same thing for him,” Elijah ordered to and the cook complied, walking back to the grill. “If you want to wait, Simon, we can wait.”
Okay, am I looking into things or is this starting to feel like an interrogation? He starts digging in as I grasp my coffee mug and take a sip. It’s not that hot and it’s not that good, but it’s something to do while I’m pretending not worry about what he’s thinking.
“No, no I can tell you. I wanted let you know how happy your Bram has made me.”
“Abraham,” He said, a little defensive. “Call him Abraham.”
“Yes, of course, Abraham.”
“Well I’m glad to hear that. Is that it?” He said, staring at this plate and not into my eyes.
“No,” I say as my stomach is falling into a pit. “If that was it, I could have told you that on the phone.”
It was a risk to speak like that to him, but perhaps it will garner his respect. His eyes showed that it did as he looked at me up and down and shook his head. “I suppose you’re right.” He pushes the plate away and crosses his hands on the table. “So what is it that needed to be said to me in person?”
I touch the Elliot Smith shirt and I think of the way Bram gets lost in my eyes and then coyly smiles as he looks away. It’s weird that I can also see the parts of Bram in his father. I swallow as the cook bangs on the grill top.
“I love your son, very much. So much, in fact, that I’m going to ask him to marry me, and I know it would mean a lot to Bram if I was able to tell him I got your blessing to do so.”
Elijah’s face froze as soon as I said marry and didn’t move. It felt like time stood still and though it was only a few seconds, I was over analyzing every single micro expression on his face. I didn’t break eye contact with me and he didn’t break eye contact with me. The cook slid the plate in front of me, but we never took our eyes off each other.
Suddenly, Elijah’s face exploded into a big, Bram-like smile and he slammed the table with his palm. A boisterous laughter followed as confusion poured over my face, which actually caused him to laugh even more.
“I’m sor – I’m sorry, Simon. Oh my god!” He continued to laugh in the empty diner until he picked up his napkin and dabbed his eyes. I still sat in confusion as he calmed down. “I couldn’t resist. You believed it so much, did you really think I was that kind of father?” More laughs poured out of him as he pulled his plate back to him to continue eating.
“Simon, I apologize, but Tracy can’t help herself and she spilled the beans. So I knew about your intentions, and all I can say is that of course you have my blessing to marry my son.”
The biggest sigh of relief washed over me as the tough-Dad act fell.
“Thank you, Elijah, that’s, thank you for that.”
“Hey, you will only be able to call me Elijah for a little bit longer, soon you’ll get to call me Dad.”
The Bram-like smile returned to his face as he put eggs on his toast and took a bite.
“I will say though,” Elijah continued. “I was very happy with how you phrased the question.”
“Oh?” I say, now feeling comfortable to eat.
“You said ‘I’m going to ask’ instead of ‘I want to ask’ or ‘I intend to ask,’ implying the choice was made and that I could either like it or dislike it, but that you were going to do it. Since Bram came out, I had to re-structure what I wanted for him in his life. I had an idea when I thought he liked girls, but when he told me he liked men, I needed to go back to the drawing board. But it’s hard, thinking about the kind of man I wanted Bram to end up with and when he brought you to meet me the first time, I always liked you because I could always look over and see Bram confidently stand by your side. And his confidence was because of you. That is exactly the kind of man I want him to be with: confident.”
I fought the urge to let a tear come out of my eye. “To be honest with you, Elijah, it’s funny that you see confidence in me because it’s something I’ve been working on since high school.”
“You could have fooled me,” Elijah answered. “Simon, it takes a lot of courage to meet the father of your love because when you date someone’s child, you’re dating a part of the parent. You did it. You kept calling, you kept on it, and not in an annoying way, but in a responsible way. You made it happen because you have confidence. Simon, Bram has told me your fishing stories.” He said laughing. “You hate fishing. But you tried to meet me on my level to ask me a hard question. Working on confidence? Simon, you have confidence.”
“Thank you, sir. That really means a lot coming from you.”
“I don’t say things I don’t mean, Simon. Regardless of the genders of people in love, what you can’t fake is the longing looks you two share. To be honest, this moment wasn’t as much of a surprise to me, it was more of when it would happen.”
And that quickly, I have two Moms and two Dads. Elijah gave me an opportunity to bow out of fishing, but I respectfully declined. I had to show him I meant business. I paid the check, again trying to show him what kin of man I am, but he already covered the breakfast before I walked in the door.
“You know, I can see where Bram gets his strategic planning from.”
“And that’s why he needs you, the impulsive confidence.”
We left the diner and the sun had just began to paint the sky a thin red and gold on the horizon. Elijah taught me a lot about what it was to deep-sea fish and I honestly had a genuinely great time.
Until I became sea sick.
Elijah laughed at me while I puked the eggs back up over the side of the ship.
“Not a sailor, huh Simon?”
I spit the lingering taste out of my mouth.
“Not yet, but I’ll get there.”
Lasts!
Who
Who was the last person you got into an argument with? What was it about? It’s been a long time since I’ve gotten into any kind of argument. My family and I bicker sometimes and have our disagreements, but that’s it.
Who was the last person you spoke on the phone with? What was the call regarding? My mom. She called the other day to ask me if I wanted her to grab me something to eat on her way home.
Unexpected pt.2 (J.M)
Description: The boys and Jonah go through deep regret while you go through heartbreak.
Part 1 Part 3
(Heads up! Everything in italics are memories)
Word Count: 3.3k
---
Jonah didn't remember when or why it started. If he took a reasonable guess, he'd say that his little fling with Maya started about a month before you found out. He met her at a music store and shamefully thought that she was beautiful. Maya didn't know Jonah was with anyone, so she didn't see why starting something would be so terrible.
When Jonah first invited her over to the house, the boys were all very confused. He was in a relationship with their best friend, so why would he bring another girl over? Jonah could still remember Daniel and Corbyn pulling him into a separate room to drown him in questions, both of their voices laced with disappointment and anger.
"She's just a friend," Jonah shrugged.
"Does Y/N know about this friend?" Jack asked as he and Zach entered the room, both of their eyebrows risen with skepticism.
"No. She doesn't need to know all of my friends," Jonah said. "I just brought Maya here to hang out."
"This is messed up," Corbyn scoffed, walking out of the room.
"I swear to God if you cheat on Y/N-" Daniel starts.
"Relax. I'd never do that to Y/N," Jonah shook his head.
"You know if Y/N knew, she wouldn't-"
"She won't know," Jonah deadpanned. "She doesn't need to. And you guys don't need to mention it."
"So we'll be lying to our best friend?" Jack rolled his eyes.
"It's not lying if you just don't bring it up."
"It's lying," Zach said.
"No, it's not," Jonah argued.
"You know if Y/N finds out, she'll be pissed that we were all keeping this from her," Daniel added.
"Not just that, but if you and this Maya chick aren't doing anything, it'll look even more suspicious to Y/N if she does find out," Zach crossed his arms.
"This is ridiculous, Y/N needs to know so she doesn't get the wrong idea," Jack scoffed.
"Dude," Jonah warns.
"She's my best friend, Jonah," Jack frowned.
"And you're my best friend, too," Jonah countered, making Jack feel conflicted.
"Jonah, this isn't right," Zach reasoned.
"You guys are making it a bigger deal than it is," Jonah stated.
"And you'll be making this all go downhill when you 'accidentally' kiss Maya," Daniel furrowed his eyebrows.
"I would never do that to Y/N," Jonah started to grow annoyed.
"Then what's the problem with-"
"Guys. Just chill the fuck out. Maya is just a friend. Y/N is my girlfriend. That's all there is to it."
And that was the last of the conversation that day. Jonah eventually took Maya up to his room and left the four other boys shaking their heads with disapproval towards the entire situation.
Ever since that day, whenever you were busy and not at the boys' house, Maya was there. She thought she'd at least be somewhat good friends with the boys by now but every time they were in the same room they all wouldn't even spare a glance at her. They always grew uncomfortable looks when she walked through the front door and whenever she'd try to be respectful and say hi, they'd give her curt nods before going back to doing what they were doing.
To the boys' knowledge, Maya and Jonah were just 'friends'. What they didn't know was that the two had shared multiple make-out sessions on his bed.
If they had known, there'd be no doubt that they'd tell you. But you didn't know that.
That day, after you ran out with tears running down your face, they had come to the conclusion that Jonah had in fact cheated on you. And to you, it looked like they knew about it, too.
It's been two weeks since the last time the boys have seen you. Two weeks since they've heard from you. Two weeks full of endless mental torture, guiltiness, and regret.
"You alright?" Jack's low voice asked as he leaned against the wall of the hallway. Jonah stood in front of the mirror in one of the bathrooms of the house, the door wide open.
"I think we all know the answer to that," Jonah muttered before flicking the light off and exiting the restroom. "I'm pretty sure she's blocked me on every single thing known to man and iPhones."
"Reasonably," Daniel inputted as he walked out of his room. Jonah let out a sigh as he ran a hand down his face.
"I went to her house with Corbyn and Jack yesterday, but Mark was there and I'm a hundred percent sure he despises me," Jonah told Daniel.
"Reasonably," Daniel added, repeating himself. "You cheated on his fucking little sister because you're a horny bastard. If I'm gonna be honest, I think you should just stop trying."
"Yeah, when hell cools down," Jonah scoffs.
"Jonah, you cheated on her. You didn't just forget her birthday or get into a small argument about God knows what. You went and got together with an entirely different woman while you were supposedly devoted to Y/N and Y/N only. She was your girlfriend that trusted you enough to not even bother suggesting to herself that you might go and hook up with someone else while she was away. You're my best friend, and you asked us not to tell her, but that was our mistake. And now we all have no choice but to deal with it," Daniel explains, his arms crossed. Jonah didn't want to listen anymore but he knew Daniel was right. They all knew what they did was wrong and now they'd have to pay for it, in which losing a very important person in their lives was the cost.
"I just," Jonah choked. "I just miss her. So fucking much," he muttered, running a hand down his face and rubbing at his chin.
"We all do," Jack sighed. "She won't answer any of our calls, either."
"Yeah, because she thought we knew about Jonah swapping saliva with Maya," Daniel ran a hand through his hair, still not over the fact that Jonah lied every time they had asked him if he had done anything with Maya.
"All I want is to see her. Just see that she's alright," Jonah elaborated.
Jack opened his mouth to say something when they hear Corbyn call for them downstairs.
"Let's go, already! I'm hungry!" Corbyn shouted and they all remembered that they were all supposed to be getting ready for some sushi restaurant they were going to.
'You loved sushi', Jonah thought solemnly as the boys head downstairs and out of the house.
The entire ride to the restaurant, Jonah sat up front in the passenger seat while staring down at his Instagram page, wincing every time he saw you in a picture with either him or the boys, the smile he loved imprinted on your face.
"You're driving back," Daniel slapped Jonah's chest with the back of his hand as everyone climbed out. Jonah felt a shiver run down his spine as his eyes landed on the restaurant he'd taken you to dozens of times before.
Jonah hopped out of the car as you all headed to the sushi place, heading to the table that already had their friend, Eben, sitting at it.
Though the second Jonah sat down in the booth beside Jack, his eyes lifted up and scanned the restaurant. He almost choked when his eyes landed on you.
You sat across the large room, your eyes drifted downwards as you poke at your sushi roll. Your hair he had twirled around his fingers hundreds of times was up in a ponytail, hairs falling in your face.
Your face was stoic as you kept your eyebrows furrowed, looking as though you were in deep thought, and Jonah had a pretty good idea of what was occupying your mind.
Jonah's eyes narrowed slightly when he saw a male figure slide into the seat across from you, resulting in you picking up your head.
You looked up when you saw Derek take a seat in front of you, his voyage to the bathroom over.
Derek was a friend you had made not too long ago. You had met him on the plane back to Florida and was ecstatic when you found out he was moving in with his mom a few blocks away. You two quickly enough became close, but as for now the relationship between you two was strictly platonic.
"You still haven't touched your food," Derek frowned, crossing his arms on the table and leaning forward.
"I think I'm a bit too queasy for sushi right now," you poked and prodded at the raw fish.
"I thought you loved sushi. That's the reason I suggested we come here," Derek frowned.
"I do love sushi. A lot. I'm just not in the mood," you tell him honestly and he nods understandably.
"It's alright. We could head back to your place and eat couch stuffings," he grinned, bringing up an inside joke that was too complicated to explain. A small smile spread on your face as you shook your head and stayed staring at the food before you.
"I'm down," you shrug.
"Alright. I'll ask for some boxes to pack this up. We both know tomorrow when you're hungry you'll swallow it whole."
"You're right," you sigh, resting your jaw in the palm of your hand as your elbow perches itself on the table.
"I'll be back," Derek rose to his feet but paused before leaving. "Chin up. You can't let that asshat take over your life. When I come back I wanna see a smile on that face," he flicks your chin up with his index finger, raising a single eyebrow.
"Yeah, yeah," you mumble, letting a sigh fall from your lips. Derek sadly smiles before walking away to the front desk.
Jonah felt his jaw clench at the sight of you with this guy, and he knew he was in the wrong because it was all his fault that the relationship ended in the first place.
"What are you looking a-" Corbyn cuts himself off when he looks in Jonah's line of vision. "Oh shit."
"What?" Daniel joins in and is also gobsmacked when he sees what the fuss is about.
"Is that-?" Jack narrows his eyes for a second before they grow wide.
"I'm gonna go talk to her," Jonah catches everybody off guard.
"What? No! Don't do that! Did you not hear a word I said earlier?" Daniel asked.
"Daniel's right, it'd be best if we just leave her alone," Jack interjected, his eyes not leaving your distant figure as you stare at your food, a dazed look on your features.
"I don't care, I want to talk to her," Jonah begins to get up but freezes when he sees someone walk through the doors of the sushi place.
"Well this is fucking great," Jack says monotonously.
"Hold up- is that-? Is that Maya?" Corbyn nearly chokes.
"What is she doing here?" Jack asks.
"I'm guessing to eat some sushi," Zach mumbles and Daniel nods with flattened lips.
"If so, then why is she walking straight towards Y/N?" Jack begins to panic.
"Thanks for bringing us into your bullshit, man," Corbyn pats Jonah on the back.
They all got quiet when Maya went to stand right in front of you, her hands by her side. You hadn't realized she had approached you until she quietly cleared her throat.
Your eyes shot upwards to her face and your back stiffened when you recognized her features oh so clearly. It was as if your tongue got caught in your throat and you wanted to puke it out.
"Hi, I'm Maya," the girl introduces herself. You didn't say anything back, being that you were as sure as daylight that she knew who you were. She had been the one you caught on top of your ex-boyfriend. "We saw each other the other day, and I just wanted to let you know that I'm so very sorry. Jonah hadn't told me he had a girlfriend already and if he did I would have never even thought of acting so intimately with him - I'm not that kind of girl- at least I never wanted to become that girl. What he did was wrong and I feel like shit for unknowingly doing that to someone else because if I was in your shoes, I'd castrate that dick-head for cheating on such a beautiful girl like you." She took in a deep breath when she was done talking.
You didn't know how to respond. Too many thoughts were floating around in your mind.
She's definitely prettier than me. Is that why Jonah cheated. Had he really not told Maya about you? Was he looking forward to just starting an entirely new relationship while still in one with you? You really should've castrated him.
"I-I don't know what to say," you mutter. "Thanks. For apologizing even though it isn't your fault. It's just... I never would've thought Jonah would do something like that," you say more-so to yourself. Had you really known Jonah?
"I didn't know I'd run into you here, but when I saw you I knew I had to clear things up with you."
"That means a lot to me, thank you," you once again thank her. She gives you a sympathetic smile before nodding and heading to go sit with her friends.
Throughout the entire conversation, your eyebrows stayed scrunched together. When Maya walked away, you felt sick to your stomach.
Derek walked back just in time to see your face turn practically green.
"Y/N, you look like your about to throw up," he frowned, quickly putting her food in one of the boxes.
"I really don't feel good," you mutter, taking deep breaths through your nose.
"Okay. Okay, we're gonna get you home so you can lay down, alright?" He quickly placed the boxes in the bags.
"Mhm," you hummed halfheartedly. You slid your phone into your back pocket before slowly standing up. Before Jonah and the boys knew it, you two were heading out.
"What did Maya say?" Daniel mumbled to himself, him and the rest of the boys all out of hearing distance.
"Doesn't matter; Y/N!" Jonah stood from where he sat and called your name right before you officially walked out that door.
"What the fuck are you-" Jack tried to get him to sit back down, but they all knew they couldn't stop Jonah.
You froze in your steps as Derek held the door open for you. Was that-?
A part of you didn't want to turn around, but the other part wanted to put a face to a name. Deep down you knew who had called your name. You just wanted the confirmation.
Slowly looking back to where you heard your name being called, your eyes quickly scanned the room before you saw Jonah standing beside a table with the rest of the boys.
Your eyes widened twice as large and you felt panic subside in you.
"Who's he?" Derek questions, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Someone I would rather never see again, let's go," you rush out of your mouth before walking out of the restaurant with Derek hot on your trails. You tried to put more of a pep in your step, heading to Derek's car.
"Y/N, wait!"
By now, you knew he was following you and the only thought running through your mind was how slow Derek was being.
"Derek, unlock your car," you hustle.
"Who is this dude? You want me to handle it?"
"No, no, it's fine-" you were cut off when you felt his grip on your forearm. You turned and felt sick inside when your eyes landed on Jonah. It was as if your blood ran cold and you knew that all you had left was hatred towards him.
"Hey, hands off her, buddy," Derek began to grow hostile.
"Who the hell are you?" Jonah asks him.
"Derek, let's go," you grumble, ripping yourself from Jonah's hold and pulling on Derek's wrist.
"I just want to talk," Jonah let out, defeated.
"Leave me alone, Jonah," you shout just as you and Derek reach his car, but Derek stopped walking when he heard the name that left your lips.
"This is Jonah?" Derek crossed his arms and turned back around.
"Just leave it," you begged, opening the front passenger side's door.
"This is the douche bag who-"
"Derek," you warned. He scoffed and ran a hand down his face as Jonah stared him down.
"Stay the fuck away from Y/N," Derek points at your ex.
"And who are you to tell me what to do? This is between Y/N and I," Jonah argued.
"Not if I don't want to talk to you," you spat back, venomously. "After some time, it does become harassment."
"Please, Y/N. I miss you," Jonah reached a hand up to his hair, harshly grabbing at it.
"It didn't look like that when she sat on your lap giving you the time of your life," you rolled your eyes. "You seem to have already gotten over me while we were still in a relationship, what's so hard about doing so now?"
Your eyes shift from Jonah to the boys who all come parading out of the sushi place. A huff of disbelief left your mouth when you see them all go to stand beside Jonah.
You slide into the car and slam the door shut as Derek climbs into the driver's seat, closing his door as well.
"That dick," Derek mumbled as he started the engine. You kept your eyes on your lap as he took the car out of park mode and drove off, leaving the five boys behind. "I could've beat him right there and then, you know."
You had told Derek about Jonah not too long ago. It was a short conversation and you didn't want to go too deep into it all, but the basics have been covered with Derek - that being you were cheated on by a boy named Jonah.
---
You sat on your living room couch with your legs crossed before you. Your body was accompanied by a thick pair of leggings and a random graphic tee with about twenty stains that haven't washed out in years.
You had your youngest sister, Evelyn, in your lap as you braided her hair just for the hell of it. She was watching cartoons on the television while you listened to music with one earbud in, your laptop placed beside you with an open Tumblr tab on it.
"Y/N!" You heard your other sister, Cara, drag your name out in her whine.
"Yes?!" You called back.
"It's Jack and Daniel and Corbyn and Zach!" You heard her call back. You furrowed your eyebrows, confused as to why she was saying their names. You stopped braiding Evelyn's hair and pulled the one earbud out of your ear, turning your head to face the hallway that leads to the kitchen and front door. Your eyes widened when you saw Cara standing at the open door.
"Cara! You're not supposed to open the door without telling me," you scold, shifting Evelyn off your lap and onto her feet as you get up and head over to the door.
Irritation ran through you when you saw the four boys gathered on your porch.
"Y/N!" Evelyn complained, running after you. "You didn't finish my hair," she whined.
"What are you guys doing here?" You sigh. "When will you understand that I don't want to speak with or see any of you?"
"Why not?" Cara asked you, making you realize that both your sisters were standing beside you.
"Because Jonah kissed another girl," Evelyn loudly whispers to Cara, who gasped loudly.
"How do you know?" Cara asked Evelyn.
"I was fake sleeping on the couch when Y/N and Derek was talking and-"
"Alright, both of you, go. Now," you demand, pointing to the stairs.
"Why?" Cara frowned while Evelyn stomped her foot.
"You didn't finish my hair!" She points out.
"I'll do it later," you sigh.
"But I want it done now!"
"Evelyn," you warn, staring at her with one risen eyebrow. The little girl huffs before stomping off up the stairs with Cara following behind.
Unfortunately, you still had four unwanted guys on your doorstep. You really wanted to close the door in their face, but you knew it wouldn't end there.
How to Stock Your Pantry for the Semi-Apocalypse*
It’s been a rough couple of weeks for many of my friends in the United States, what with the pestilence, the lack of leadership, the hoarding in the supermarkets, and it’s not even the post-Apocalyptic dystopian future we were promised.
However, what’s been slowly creeping into my Facebook feed of late are the first hints of food boredom.
Even those who can afford to order in their favorite Chinese or Mexican, those menus are getting a bit long in the tooth. What once was an “every couple of weeks” guilty pleasure of General Tsao’s chicken, “special” fried rice and a bottle of your favorite twist-off cap Shiraz has lost its charm.
Anyone who follows my Instagram account knows that nothing comes between me, food and cocktails. I’m the guy who when answering the questionnaire at a new doctor’s office warily counters the “how many alcoholic drinks do you have a week” inquiry with a defensive, “Why do you need to know?”
“I hear you like to cook?” I’m often asked when being introduced to new friends and colleagues and my go-to answer is, “Yes, but I prefer to eat.”
And that’s why I cook. I wish I could say I find cooking to be this relaxing past-time, where I spend anywhere from 15-minutes to several hours whipping up a quick pasta sauce or creating a complex Indian curry, listening to Adelle or Carly Simon—a glass of Muscadet in hand. But, no. Cooking, for me, is an ordeal and a means to an end.
Homemade beef pho broth.
But that’s doesn’t mean it can’t be somewhat enjoyable; your food doesn’t have to be predictable or monotonous. And, if you’re going to be confined to your home for three to four weeks, this is where you have to improvise, to grab the whisk by the handle and make the magic happen.
The Basics
First, if you’re entering week three of isolation and it’s time to hit the markets, let’s think smart and make sure your fridge and pantry are stocked with the vitals. If you have food allergies or adopted a lifestyle that has dietary restrictions, please, swap out as needed.
Some of you have been furloughed or lost your jobs, so this is a reasonably priced list offering staples that will last a long time and give days, if not weeks, and in some cases, months of value. Buy what you feel is necessary. As Stephen Casuto, host and creator of one of my favorite cooking shows, Not Another Cooking Show, says, “You, do you.”
“Table salt is disgusting and should only be used for rubbing into the wounds of your enemies.”
The Carbs:
Pasta — enough for at least six meals for two people with leftovers, or three meals for four people (spaghetti/linguini and some kind of tube or macaroni—rotini, fusilli. etc.)
Rice — My old standby is Jasmine rice. Prepared properly it can be used in all kinds of dishes—plain, Mexican, Spanish, Asian, Indian, Italian.
The Vegetables:
Potatoes—Technically, a carb, but, hey. Both waxy (Yuko Golds, Red Bliss or similar) and floury (Idaho, Russet or similar). Keep in a cool, dry drawer, these can last for weeks if stored properly.
Preparing the base for a Pasta Fagioli soup.
Carrots—Large ones with their greens preferred, but if the hoarders have bought all those, then freakish manicured baby carrots.
Tomatoes—firm, preferably on the vine and not quite ripe yet. Only get about four to six so you will use them and they won’t rot and go to waste. Great for sandwiches, avocado toast, chopped into an omelet.
Onions—Yellow and Red (Yellow for most of the sauteeing and cooking you’re going to do, and red for fresh salads, sandwiches, and salsas)
Garlic—Two to three decent-sized bulbs, stored with the onions and potatoes. (Remember: Warm and humid makes your garlic and onions grow into stinky house plants.)
The easy and delicious weekday sauce.
Peppers—Depending on what you love or what you can tolerate, get at least two bell peppers or Italian green peppers, maybe a handful of hot red birdseye chillis, or some habaneros. These will add color and sparkle to everything from a salad to some scrambled eggs.
Celery—I’m of two minds when it comes to celery. First, it’s a vital part of mirepoix, that magical combination of onions, carrots, and celery that’s the basis of most Western soups and stews. But, unless you’re on a rabbit diet, people tend to buy it, use less than half a bunch in one minestrone soup then end up chucking the rest away. But, hey, you’re the cook.
Herbs—Get the dried kind out of desperation: bay leaves, oregano, thyme, rosemary. But, always get fresh parsley and basil.
Dried Goods:
Flour—White, all-purpose flour and Cornmeal (making cornbread for breakfast is a simple warm treat. Everyone should be able to cook this from scratch).
Thickeners—Corn starch, potato starch; I recently discovered xanthan gum and if you’re one of those folks taken by “molecular gastronomy” or food as a science project, this is one of the weirder thickening agents on the market.
Cornbread can be made in less than an hour.
Leavening Agents—Baking soda and baking powder. (Unless you’ve decided you really love baking artisanal bread, you really don’t need yeast).
Salt—Preferably sea salt, or kosher salt. Remember different salts have different salinities, so a “pinch” of pink Himalayan salt is less salty than a similar size “pinch” of Morton’s Table Salt, which, by the way, is disgusting and should only be used for rubbing into the wounds of your enemies. So, get a salt that fits your budget, your health needs, and your personal flavor profile. I prefer sea salts, they have a richness I like and I feel I can control seasoning better.
Pepper—Black peppercorns, of course, but nothing beats having a box or container of white pepper. It’s got a completely different flavor profile than black pepper and adds a wonderful heat to everything from mashed potatoes to cream soups.
Eggs and Dairy
Milk—If you’re lactose intolerant or vegan/vegetarian you can substitute soy milk or your favorite substitute here, but not almond milk because that shit is a ripoff and is killing the planet.
Cream—You will want this for mashed potatoes and to thicken some sauces.
Butter—Always buy Kerrygold Irish Butter, salted and unsalted. It’s the best butter out there. Fight me.
Making a chicken curry from scratch
Plain Yogurt—I prefer Greek yogurt myself. It’s handy to have around and a great way to add richness to a baked item if you only have low-fat milk or to make a quick fresh fruit breakfast.
Cheese—If you must, get a bag of shredded cheddar and a bag of “parmesan”. Cheeses are personal taste, I love fatty, creamy, stinky cheeses, but, honestly, they don’t last long and they are an extravagance for many people at this time. So, get what you like, but make sure you at least have a nice chunk of quality cheddar or similar cheese around.
Eggs—A dozen, big ones. Free-range if you feel guilty.
This Singapore-style laksa is easy and quick.
A Bit of the Sweet
Sugar—Processed sugar is evil. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, always have some handy. It’s great to throw a tablespoon into a tomato-based sauce to offset the acidity. And there is nothing like a lovely stack of homemade pancakes covered in melted butter, a sprinkling of sugar and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
Brown Sugar—Less sweet, a little smokey and great for Asian broths that ask for processed sugar. And, it’s “good” for you because, you know, it’s not processed.
Maple Syrup—For pancakes and French Toast.
Condiments:
Ketchup—Whatever you like. Though raised on American Heinz ketchup, I prefer the British brands that tend to use a little more vinegar, but that is an acquired taste.
Mayonaise—The magical base for so many different dressings and sauces. Yes, I will sit down with a plate of french fries or steak-cut chips and a cup of mayo and just go to town on that. Also, dipping cold, boiled chicken that’s torn into strips and wrapped in chilled, crisp iceberg lettuce into mayo while drinking a dry white wine on a hot summer’s day is one of God’s little miracles.
Fried halloumi cheese on a run of the mill avocado toast makes it better.
Mustard—Go ahead, buy French’s American Mustard in a squeeze jar. I don’t judge. But, please get some good Dijon Mustard, and some English Mustard, wet or the powder, is really handy to have for extra punch.
Vinegar—Plain old white vinegar if you're on a budget, but red wine, is also good. Italian balsamic if you want to live large, but I find a bottle of Japanese rice wine vinegar is the perfect all-rounder.
Hot sauce—Tobasco and Siraccha are my go-to faves, but you know what you like.
Olive Oil—Get Extra-Virgin and plain. the EVOO is great for both cooking and for finishing dishes and for cold dressings and sauces. Plain olive oil is great for adding flavor to simple fried sauces and dishes.
Vegetable Oil—A good neutral oil is Canola. It won’t kill you.
Prepared Foods
Canned Goods—at least one can of each: chickpeas, black beans, and kidney beans. Also, a can of mushrooms and a couple of cans of diced green chillis. Two to three 24-ounce cans of Italian tomatoes, with our without basil.
Frozen vegetables—A package of corn and a package of peas. One package of mixed vegetables for making quick healthy soups.
Broths and stocks—Beef, chicken, and vegetable. Fish stock for the more adventurous. (If you haven’t had sliced potatoes slow-cooked in fish stock, I totally recommend it, simple and delicious.) I always buy low-sodium because my body is, like, you know, a temple. 🙄
Actually, always try to purchase low sodium processed foods, that gives you, the cook, more power over the seasoning of your meals.
Thai beef soup with beef balls.
Now, you’re thinking, why is this guy torturing us with pictures of beautiful, exotic home-cooked meals? Why are so many of the “basics” not as exciting as the final products?
That’s because now is the time to get what I’ll call…
The New Basics
You’ve hit the local Vons, or Trader Joe’s, Publix or Wegman’s; you’ve emptied your wallet at Whole Foods and Kroeger, now let’s get some real food. Head down to your local Asian supermarket, or your local South American/Mexican supermarket, because this is where it gets interesting.
The Carbs:
Noodles—From Japanese soba, udon and Hokkaido (ramen) noodles to the long, translucent Vietnamese and Thai rice noodles to the tightly wound, sometimes flavored Chinese noodle nests, most of these keep a long time in a dry cool place and they cook quickly offering alternative tastes and textures.
The Vegetables:
Fresh Ginger Root—it’s ugly and essential, but it can change the flavor of everything from a simple broth to a quick scrambled egg into a culinary adventure. No, don’t peel it with a spoon, that’s silly. Just use a sharp knife on the extraneous knobbly bits and then use a vegetable peeler like a normal person. Honestly, I see the YouTube chefs wrestling with a chunk of ginger and a tablespoon and I just shake my head.
Choy Sum and/or Bak Choy—Definitely hunt these down at the Asian grocer. They stay fresh longer in a good vegetable crisper in your fridge; they’re easy to clean and prepare and cook very quickly.
Chayote—A green, waxy squash that is like a more flavorful cucumber, with a great texture. Add it to all your veggie soups, or saute it with some garlic. Just handy. And keeps in the fridge for a long time.
Condiments:
Soy sauce—Get both kinds, dark soy sauce and light soy sauce. The difference isn’t the color, it’s the viscosity and the flavor. Dark soy sauce is actually somewhat sweet, unctuous and thick and adds deep rich flavors to stews, soups, and sauces. Soy sauce is a nice alternative to just seasoning with salt. Get low sodium, if dietary restrictions are in place, but you don’t really need to use too much, so, I always go with regular.
Chili Oils/Pastes—Much like the fresh peppers, this is all about personal taste. I love spicy food, but I’m not a fan of heat for heat’s sake. So, no a jalapeno margarita where I can’t taste anything or feel my lips is not a great culinary experience. Still, always have these little miracle jars handy, you control the heat by how much or how little you add to the dish you’re preparing. My three faves are traditional Chinese chili garlic sauce, Chiu Chow chili oil, and Calabrian chili oil.
Vinegar — Plain old white vinegar if you’re on a budget, but red wine, is also good. Italian balsamic if you want to live large, but I find a bottle of Japanese rice wine vinegar is the perfect all-rounder.
Fish sauce—Don’t let the name and smell deter you, a spoonful of this elixir in a soup or dressing adds a lovely saltiness and brightness.
Sesame Oil—Plain or toasted. This is for flavor only, really. You can add it to dressings, or add it to vegetable oil when sauteeing, but you can’t cook with it because it burns very quickly; that said, it gives a great depth of flavor to any dish you add it to.
Frozen Foods:
Dumplings—Either factory-made or handmade, Asian dumplings are inexpensive, delicious and easy to prepare. Beef, pork, shrimp, and vegetable or a combination of two or more fillings are always available. Korean dumplings tend to be larger. Wontons are light and mostly shrimp or shrimp and pork. If you’re lucky to have a vibrant Asian community, find the “Mom and Pop” store that makes both noodles and dumplings. Fresh dumplings are usually packed with a light dusting of corn or potato starch so they can be easily frozen.
Asian-style meatballs—OK, now these have a texture that takes a little getting used to, but they are packed with protein and flavor and cook up in seconds in a frying pan or in a soup. Pork, beef, and shrimp are the most popular. I love them and find they really make a noodle soup a quick, but truly satisfying meal.
Canned Goods:
Coconut Milk—From Indian to Thai to Malaysian cuisine, this is mother’s milk. Get a couple of cans.
Peppers—Canned chipotles. Smoked in a flavorful sauce, a little goes a long way here. But you can add these to soups and basic stews to create great depths of heat and flavor.
Okay, now this is by no means a definitive list, but it’s enough I think to give you as many options as you can once you return home and prepare for the next few weeks of personal time.
As you’ve seen, I’ve included links to some of my favorite recipes with the pictures, it’s from these recipes that I reevaluated and changed how I stock my fridge and pantry.
It’s also helped inform my cooking. Bored with cereal and toast, and fried eggs, or scrambled eggs or an omelet with bacon, one morning I created what is now my favorite, flavorful, high protein, yet not too filling breakfast; scrambled eggs and dumplings. It’s my recipe, inspired by other more traditional recipes and the food I had available at the time. It’s what Chef John from the delightful Food Wishes refers to as “that’s just you, cooking.”
The First Recipe
Ingredients:
Three eggs, room temperature, well beaten, preferably in a metal bowl with a whisk
One to two scallions or a half/third of a small yellow onion, finely chopped
One chili pepper (in this case, a Thai green chili), finely chopped.
Four to six frozen Asian dumplings depending on what type
2 Tablespoons — Vegetable oil
1 Tablespoon — Sesame oil
Chiu Chow chili oil or Sriracha
Soy Sauce
Salt
In a small saucepan bring water to a boil. In a small frying pan add your vegetable oil, the onions, and chilis and some salt and turn on the heat.
You want the onions and chilis to cook slowly and sweat, not burn or brown so keep an eye on them and keep stirring.
Now once the vegetables are cooked and the kitchen smells delicious, add a tablespoon of sesame oil into vegetables and lower the heat.
Now, the water should be at a rolling boil. Add the dumplings. I used Korean pork dumplings this morning. They only take three to five minutes to cook. You will know they are done when they float and spin freely in the water.
Now, turn up the heat of the frying pan and add in the eggs, keep stirring and cook the eggs as you like them. Take the eggs off the heat, the residual heat should finish the cooking.
Meanwhile, the dumplings should be cooked. Strain them and place them in the bottom of a bowl. Then scoop over the eggs, finish with a tablespoon or two of soy sauce and the chili sauce of your choosing.
This is a 15-minute breakfast, tops. I hope this was helpful. It’s a trying time for everyone and many of us are fortunate enough to have a roof over our heads that we can cower under. This is an opportunity for reflection, but also to make the most of your family or companions. For those of you living alone, treat yourself to a culinary feast once in a while.
I say cooking is an ordeal, but it’s also a celebration. A chance to be creative and offer comfort, if not for yourself, for the people you live with and love.
Go break an egg.
I was looking back through my posts to see when our last update was and if you don’t include A Series of Unexpected Events, Part 2, and Part 3 then I believe it would’ve been Life Update: A Jacuzzi, A Boy’s Night out, And Why We Don’t ‘Do’ Halloween which seems like it was forever ago.
Monday
I know last week I posted 35+ Freezer Meals In One Day! where I did give a couple of updates like Ms. Bella’s birthday:
And then Nanny J also had a birthday where we made her a cute little gift out of items that we had:
A cute teddy bear made from a Norwex Body Cloth, some lotion samples, and a bracelet. In that post I also had some of our budding photographer’s shots… he really loves taking pictures of animals. If you haven’t checked out my Norwex site you should probably go ahead and do that NOW. Make sure to sign up for my newsletter because there are a TON of great sales coming up!
That night we had one of our freezer meals, Ham & Cheese Potato Bake. It was soo good! I got the top a little extra brown and that was Mr. Awesome’s favorite part. We had leftovers for lunch the next day and I had enough for my lunch the day after too! This one is definitely going on repeat for our menu!
The FULL MOON seems to make everything and everyone so crazy around here. I can’t even begin to tell you what happened. A couple of the kids were CRAZY and WILD and Momma was just about to pull her hair out! I do have a post coming up about Lunar Influence.
Tuesday
I don’t remember much of Tuesday except that I was busy trying to figure out where to put all of those freezer meals and I was fighting with the internet. I ended up on the phone with customer service and on chat for 5-6 hours that day BEFORE they finally agreed to send someone out.
The tech came out late in the evening and with the time change, it was getting DARK really fast. He didn’t see any problem at first and was about to give us his personal number so we could call him when it was acting up when it CRASHED again. He found so many errors he said he honestly didn’t know how we even had any internet service at all.
Since it was dark already he said he would come back the next day, if that was OK.
We had some fried pork chops, mashed potatoes, and green beans for dinner that night. Mr. Awesome had been complaining that he missed having fried foods so I made an exception. There were no LEFTOVERS!
Wednesday
We pulled out some of the Baked Oatmeal Applesauce Muffins for breakfast. Everyone loved them but they suggested that we need to add some raisins to them the next time make them!
The tech returned and again he found numerous errors… more than he had ever anticipated. He was tracing the errors here and there when he finally decided to just start replacing lines.
It appears that part of the problem was because when the previous lines were installed a couple of years ago the original tech had not taken out or unhooked the old wiring. This causes a back feed and was messing with the signal… all I really know is that it is working much better now.
I have been so much more productive online this week and it feels good to actually be able to get a little work done… it was kind of funny trying to explain to the tech what I do and what I need my internet to do but he kinda seemed to understand. I have been AMAZED to see the increase in my blog traffic and Pinterest views since my productivity has INCREASED… CRAZY!
I also worked on getting all of the freezer meals put into the freezers as they had been in the refrigerators. I didn’t have quite enough room without doing some major reorganization so we ate one of them for dinner, Stuffed Shells.
I didn’t fix any sides but some buttered bread. We still had enough leftovers for lunch the next day. This one will be added to the repeating menu as well! Mr. Awesome just suggested that I add a little more cheese to the top… this was one of the meals where I was running short on cheese. I had planned to add more before baking but hadn’t been to the store again yet.
That’s one way to fix something that causing an issue… eat it!
Thursday
This past Thursday Mr. William had a dentist appointment. He was SUPER anxious because it was a new dentist and he often doesn’t do well with NEW things. I was lucky that Mr. Awesome was able to keep the other kiddos at home so I could FOCUS all of my attention on Mr. William.
He got a bit NERVOUS when they were doing the x-rays but he did fine. His appointment went well and he had NO CAVITIES! He does need to work on his brushing a little bit. We don’t use a ‘traditional toothpaste’ as one of the kids had some issues with Flouride a few years back and switched to this brand. My kids love the lemon flavor!
Mr. William and I also stopped at the bread store to stock up on a few items. The store was almost completely our of regular loaf bread so we ended up with a lot of wheat bread and just before we finished checking out they had found two loaves of white bread so I grabbed them… sorry folks! After that, we stopped by the post office to pick up a couple of packages. We had some school supplies and some Christmas gifts that had come in. I have probably finished 80-90% of our Christmas shopping although I can’t promise that I’ll be able to find it all if this house doesn’t get here soon!
When we returned home, I made lunch for everyone and sent the kids to their beds for a nap. Everyone has been a little under the weather which has made them super grouchy. This wasn’t the only reason though… we needed to fix the toilet. If the kids were down for naps it would make the job that much easier.
I went to town to grab the parts we needed and when I returned Mr. Awesome and I set to work. The hardest part was to get the bolts off as they were rusted. We ended up using a hacksaw to cut the bolts which was no easy task. Once that was completed we removed the toilet and began to check for the problem… if you follow me on Instagram you probably already know what I found:
Yep, one of the kiddos had indeed flushed part of a hanger down. I managed to fish it out with a coat hanger as it was caught in the bend of the toilet… that was not easy either. We did manage to get everything cleaned out and get the toilet reinstalled well before naptime was over and now we have working toilet again.
The kids were a little worried as they had heard me mention to Mr. Awesome that we needed to clean out the outhouse and get it back in working order… lol. Mr. Awesome did hurt his back during this project so please pray for him!
The bathroom still needs some major work but it will need to wait until we can get moved as we just can’t go without a toilet for the time we need to renovate the bathroom.
That evening Mr. Awesome surprised me by taking me out to dinner at one of our favorite places, Ballyhoo Grill. We usually just order a few appetizers as our meal because they are so good!
After dinner, we went to one of my favorite stores, Books A Million, and found quite a few interesting books. We also went to Walmart to pick up a few things and then we headed home. While we were out we did see a few things that might make good Christmas gifts as well.
I later found out that something else had been planned for that night but Mr. Awesome’s injury kept him from doing it.
The kids had meatball sandwiches with potato chips for dinner while they were at home with the babysitter. I don’t believe there were any leftovers that night either!
Friday
On Friday my son-in-law graduated from his training and that means he and my daughter will be relocating to Kansas soon! I’m trying not to cry as I think about it. I know we have to let go of them at some point but it never seems to be the right time when it happens… you always seem to want to hang on to them just a little bit more.
This was one of my motivations for posting as many new recipes to the blog as I have. My daughter is ALWAYS asking for recipes and it is so much easier to just make a copy and give it to her but she won’t be that close anymore. Now she can check the blog and print it out… something else I’ve been working on as well… and if she can’t find it then she can let me know what she needs and I’ll get it to her. I‘ll probably also share them on the blog as well.
Here are a few of the recipes I’ve posted recently:
Peanut Butter Cookies
Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies
Watergate Salad
Crockpot Pumpkin Butter
No-Bake Cheesecake with Flavor Variations
One thing that I’ve found, as I’ve been updating the recipes to include a printable link, is that some of the links were not working! I don’t really know how many of them are like that on my blog, and I probably never will know for sure, but that is so FRUSTRATING. If you ever happen to find a broken link please let me know in the comments and I’ll work on getting it fixed ASAP!
We also had a square dance that night. We had a babysitter watch the kiddos as they were still a bit under the weather.
I knew it was going to be a busy day so I had planned ahead and pulled out another freezer meal, Beef Stroganoff. I made some green beans and rolls to go with it. Apparently, everyone really enjoyed it as there wasn’t much left when we got home and all the rolls were gone. I think there may be enough for two or three lunches left.
We had been expecting to see some dirt for the house come this week but so far NOTHING has appeared. The weather has been a bit NASTY as well so maybe that had a part to play in it?
Saturday
We had planned to go to a big dance on Saturday but some other things came up. Mr. Awesome had to go out of town that morning so I decided to help with a local vendor event, kids in tow, and I had a great time. I did have a little trouble getting everyone dressed that morning though:
We ate some of the loaded breakfast biscuits that morning. They were a hit with all but one of the kids. He ate a banana instead and everyone was happy. We also took some of our PB&Js from the freezer to carry with us for lunch.
I am constantly gathering new ideas for when I can venture out on my own. I really enjoy educating people about Norwex and its mission. I really don’t mind if they don’t buy our products as long as they are learning a little bit about reducing chemicals to improve the quality of their lives and the lives of their family members!
Was taking the kids a good idea? Ehhh… the jury is still out on that one. Some of the kids did really well, one of them was super grumpy, and another was just a MESS. The ones who did really well kept themselves occupied under the table… they pretended to be on a picnic. They all enjoyed looking around the flea market and they got to take their picture with SPONGEBOB!
I also saw some really cute things that I wanted to get but I didn’t… these little snowmen were adorable though:
I completely missed the bears… I might’ve gotten them if I had seen them!
We had still planned on going to the dance that evening but I really wasn’t feeling well and the kids were SUPER GRUMPY! Mr. Awesome got home later than expected and he also wasn’t feeling well so we just decided to stay home because we knew that we had a big day planned for Sunday.
That night we had a simple meal of sweet and sour meatballs with some macaroni and cheese. There are a few leftovers in the fridge… between the beef stroganoff and meatballs I should have lunch covered for today!
Sunday
Oh man, I woke up feeling MISERABLE. The dog wouldn’t be QUIET and was whining so bad because she doesn’t like to ‘sleep in’. Then it was the kids and all Momma wanted to was SLEEP!
I gave up on my plan and took Ms. Comet for a walk. The good thing about it being so cold is that she gets her business finished quickly. Then I set to work on making some Scrambled Eggs, Cheesy Grits, and toast. I just had a cup of Dandy Morning Coffee and a couple of Ibuprofen.
Shortly after sitting for a while our doorbell rang… guess who it was?
It was big sister, Ana, and her husband, Cody! We had plans to visit the MOSH as one last family outing before they leave. This month they had an astronaut exhibit which the kids really enjoyed. We also got there just in time for an animal talk and everyone got to pet a bearded lizard. Here is a quick slideshow of some of the things that we saw and did:
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
After the MOSH we went to visit a couple of my sisters… that’s where things went a little crazy. My one sister lives in a gated subdivision so it took us a minute to get in. When we got to her house she wasn’t there. She called me and ended up having me check her windows to see if any were open… well, I found one that was cracked open a tad and she told me to climb in!
She assured me that it was going to be OK even though I was afraid I’d set off an alarm and be swarmed with cops. After discussing all of the possible outcomes I decided, I should go ahead and just do it as it was pretty cold outside. When I was midway through the window one of my daughters came around the corner… yeah, probably not the best parenting moment for your kid to watch you breaking into a house! When I told big sis Olivia what I had done she didn’t believe me… lol.
I did get inside and unlocked the door, no cops came, and we ended up having a pretty good time. The kids love playing with their cousins and us sisters love running our mouths and catching up. We even added another sister through video chat… lol.
We had a dinner of sauteed veggies, baked spaghetti squash with alfredo sauce, baked chicken breast, and some garlic bread. While it wasn’t a winner with everyone it was pretty good and it was different. I will be trying spaghetti squash again here soon. I think if I put my special spaghetti sauce with it we will get a different reaction.
We had a late night last night and everyone was ready to get home and go to bed. As I am finishing this the kids are still sleeping. I’m feeling a bit under the weather today as I finally gave up fighting this cold last night. I spent the night sitting up in a recliner because that was the only way I could get comfortable and still breathe. As much as I’d love to sit around and jaw with you a bit more, I really think I want to take my hot coffee and snuggle with a blanket for a bit!
I hope you all have a blessed week!
