I was talking with my friend about Hunterâs emotional state throughout the film (as you do) and we came to the following conclusion.
Disclaimer: I know full well that Metal Lords (2022) is a lighthearted comedy & coming-of-age film of which Kevin is the main character. Like, I get why the film goes the way it goes and I love it as it is. However, I obviously hyper-focus on a certain character and I just like exploring the âifsâ in films & shows, so hereâs the thing:
Getting dumped at rehab by his dad should have triggered a Macbeth level breakdown in Hunter and hereâs why.
Quite early in the film itâs established that Hunterâs mom left. The only explicit text we get on the subject is in Kevinâs voice-over. âHeâs been into a lot of things since Iâve known him, but heâs stuck with metal longer than any of them. When his mom left in seventh grade, he decided it was the key to everything.â And two shots of the picture frame Hunter has in his room that his mom has literally been ripped out of.
So there isnât much to go off, but thereâs implications. You could just read it as him being a temperamental little shit that ripped up a photo in anger. But I think itâs more interesting to go a little further.
We know how Hunter feels about his dad, once again being something touched on in part by Kevinâs voice-over. âSometimes heâs not so nice to people when heâs uncomfortable. And being around his dad makes him uncomfortableâ Itâs a line that is cut off by Hunter being a little shit in DnD but we know the word is uncomfortable. Then, obviously, Hunter and his dad are mostly seen mid-shouting match. They donât get along. They canât communicate productively. They just donât get each other. Thereâs a lot of yelling and his dad makes him uncomfortable.
And with all of that he still has a photo of him and his dad on his shelf. What that tells me is that Hunter has to fucking hate his mom. We donât get much of an indication as to why but one factor that would make sense is that she abandoned him. She left. And she left him.
If we assume that Hunter and his dad have always butted heads to some degree, his mom leaving him with his dad would be even worse. She rejected him, she didnât want him and now all he has is someone who makes him incredibly uncomfortable to be around. His dad is a cunt, but at least he didnât abandon him.
Now, Kevin. Bare with me here, itâs about to get gay. Thatâs how I see the character, however, it can still apply if you do see Hunter as straight (I donât know how you manage it, but go off, cis)
Hunter is clearly very very attached to Kevin. Possessive of him, even. I think it beams off the screen that Hunter is in love with Kevin. But even that isnât entirely necessary to acknowledge for it to be clear that Hunter sees Kevin and himself as a package deal.
âWeâre Skullfuckerâ Skullfucker isnât just their band to Hunter. It is them. Itâs them against the world. Theyâre not particularly shown to have many/any other friends. One can infer that Hunter has people he plays DnD with. But that doesnât necessarily make them his friends.
âyou are afraid of everybodyâ It doesnât matter that Kevin says this in the heat of a fight. I think heâs dead on.
Kevin is the only person Hunter feels safe with. The only person heâs not scared of. And then Kevin abandons him too. Not explicitly. Not to Kevin. But Hunter deeply feels like he has. Kevin getting a girlfriend, trying to get her to be a part of the band. Not to mention drumming for a different band. It would shatter the image Hunter has in his mind of their band being them. Of them, and their bond, and the time they spend together being something uniquely special.Â
And then his dad is so fed up with him he dumps him at a rehab facility for no other reason than just not wanting to deal with him anymore.
I donât buy even for a second that Hunter was dropped off at rehab for being âaddicted to metalâ. His dad didnât wanna deal with trying to be a parent to a delinquent child that stole his fucking credit card. So he dumped him somewhere where he wouldnât have to deal with him. In a âtheyâll fix himâ kind of move.
What I buy even less is that it fucking works. Hunter is portrayed as doing better after rehab. Like it was a wake-up call to someone whose main issue was just being an asshole.
No. Fuck that.
That was the last person he could rely on abandoning him too.
His mom doesnât want him. His best friend/crush doesnât want him. His dad doesnât want him. There is no way in hell he is doing better after that. Hunter spends the entire movie an anxious (autistic) mess that automatically shoves down any emotion that isnât anger. Being abandoned by everyone he had left would have been more than enough to break him.
There is just no fucking way that Hunter is okay.
#metal lords#metallords#hunter sylvester#kevin x hunter#kind of#kevin schlieb#my post#schliebvester#just my interpretation#hunter is gay#hunter is autistic#every member of skullflower is autistic#hunter has anxiety#the 'go off cis' thing is meant to be a light-hearted lil jokey don't take me too serious#I have not read macbeth#I just like the phrase 'macbeth level breakdown' don't come for me#hunterwriteswords

And the reasons behind each are pretty different...
Romeo and Juliet: Literally written in the stars. Throw shade at the speed but has your first conversation with someone ever formed a perfect sonnet?? I think not.
Macbeth: Some witches fucked up and told him he could be king and then his wife decided the best way to do this was murder.
Y'all can keep at it with that âRomeo and Juliet fell in love in five days how immatureâ shiz but Macbeth went from no murder to yes murder in like one afternoon and I feel like one of those is a significantly bigger problem than the other
#i have not read macbeth#this is through osmosis#i think im mostly right though#romeo and juliet#macbeth#shakespeare

Unhinged ask: crowley gets french mistaked in the middle of a performance of david tennant macbeth. Drops right into tennantâs body. What happens next
okay im directing all possible brainpower towards this it's so important
so it happens during the song of the witches- accidental demon summoning and bam he's in david tennant's body. what ensues actually isn't all that different from the original performance, you just hear "stop it that tickles" occasionally over the headset
crowley would kinda twig that he's somehow in the middle of macbeth (just because he likes the funny ones doesn't mean he hasnt seen macbeth a thousand times... even if only to take the piss out of it each time afterwards to annoy aziraphale), and he kinda like. dips in and out of remembering the lines. the audience doesn't care about (or lbr, notice) his ad-libs bc as far as they're concerned, rsc legend david tennant can do what he fucking likes
sword fight, he makes light saber sound effects to each blow. then eventually we come to the curtain call, and he is actually pretty pleased with himself but mainly because whilst 'dead' he drew a penis on the stage in the fake blood
the piÚce de résistance however is that he spots michael sheen in the crowd, and swan dives off the stage to be carried towards him, thinking it's aziraphale. the audience happily passes him over their heads, bc honestly david tennant crowdsurfing his way to michael sheen is probably the least ridiculous thing either of these freaks has done to be in each other's company
#ask#good omens#macbeth#david tennant#this is a venn diagram ask and i still have tears in my eyes from both reading it and answering it

thinking about the way that lady macbeth convinces macbeth to kill duncan and yeah she talks about power and cowardice and what he owes to himself and to her, but at the heart of the whole thing is how their child died and she has nothing else to pin her hopes for the future on. unfortunately the fact that they no longer have an heir is also the driving force behind macbethâs violent paranoia toward banquo which ultimately dooms them
#like the last thing she does before he agrees to go through with the murder is invoke the loss of her motherhood#thatâs what gives him the push. i could scream. itâs evil because they both think theyâre doing it for the other person#and how could their relationship NOT fall apart after that honestly? how can you do that for someone and not grow to resent it?#and the fact that we have no details except that she must have had a child at some point if sheâs able to nurse a child#and the fact that the matter of children and childbearing is so fraught in the play#oh my god. i could tear off all my skin thinking about it#AND that he kills macduffâs infant son in cold bloodâŠ. fucked up#anywayâŠ.. the modern reading of lady m as sympathetic because she only wants whatâs best for her husband is correct imo#but when you consider this context it becomes even more so because he is her entire family now#due to the mundane perversion of a child dying before their parents#thatâll fuck you up. god forbid women do anything#macbeth

(left): "mr. sims, can we pls watch you play chess.com?" (macbeth essays submitted: 5/27) [i'm too old for this shit"]
(right): "and they're like obsessed with chess? but only on the computer" "at least they're engaged?"
#theres smth so calming about imagining jon in a classroom reading macbeth#like hes in his natural habitat or smth....#idk if this is true in other schools but at my highschool kids fucking hated english class. like disproportionately#yeah math sucks and there were some shitty math teachers but across the board ppl could not stand our english classes#its esp funny to me bc of how much i imagine jon would love english classes + reading classic lit#he just cannot wrap his head around the fact that most of his class spends the entire period playing chess.com#my art#doodles#tma#the magnus archives#jonathan sims#martin blackwood#jonmartin#the day magnus protocol drops expect me to either never shut up or completely disappear#the hype is all consuming#i still dont have a computer nor do i have a job so all i can offer is these sketches#more to come....

God I'd forgotten that "who could refrain, / That had a heart to love, and in that heart / Courage to make 's love known?" is not only from Macbeth but that he says it because he's just murdered Duncan's guards (to cover up his crime) and feels the need to explain himself.
Anyway I absolutely think people should keep misusing it in romantic contexts, personally I would love to get that on a Valentine's Day card
#I mean Romeo and Juliet are great and all but if it's romance you're after have you ever heard Macbeth and Lady M talk about murder#Thinking it's something of a trend after reading whatever the hell that was Brutus and Cassius had going on last week#The couple that slays together... well Macbeth and his lady don't really stay together properly but you get my drift#So many great lines in Shakespeare but esp. Macbeth#Interestingly (and I may be wrong) I think it's the play Bertie Wooster quotes most as well?#It might just be because I recognise quotes from Macbeth quicker than other plays though#reading log
