I've finished the next chapter of Mers and it's currently being art-ed and I'm 6k words into a sequel for "The Coming of the Season" which set in omegaverse and features a teen mom Bruce. I'm having an absolute blast with it. It's quickly become one of my favourite things to write. Oh I'm also writing an AI horror story for October.

Not sure if I suggested this one in the past about stupid superheroes (including a blind guy with bike handles on his head and laser eyes, an actual Mary Sue who's his girlfriend, a cowgirl who makes no sense, and a guy that levitate cats) but putting it up front just to cover that base

-Delta Dawn

A particularly infamous "superhero" comic that tries to be a social justice comic tackling racism and sexism while apparently unintentionally doing both those thing somehow? It's either that or intentionally being bad to prove it's point, but it doesnt have the self awareness to do it right? Apparently tries to have a protagonist and antagonist story run side by side too? You know it's bad when I see character names and I can't tell if it's being hyperbolic or if that's literally what the characters are called...

-Black Magic by SacredHyacinth

Magic teens in a future apocalyptic setting have magic jewelry to protect them as they live in a city that doesn't want them to have their jewelry for some reason? Things for the comics lore and worldbuilding just are half explained haphazardly as it goes on...

-My Alien Girlfriend (doesn't know I'm an alien)

Another webtoon comic. Comedy romance about two dating aliens in obvious disguise. Drawn rather poorly, lots of fanservice without going all the way to being porn, and very poor humor... literally the girlfriend looks like a clown character from another, and I believe actual porn, comic the author had a hand in.

-Parallax by m falke

Sort of a hybrid magical girl/superhero thing. A boy is given a little box that turns him into a ninja looking hero to fight monsters. Haven't read too much, but the art style is interesting looking at least.

- Bittersweet Candy Bowl by Veronica "taeshi" Vera

A furry teen drama comic about an angsty Mary Sue white cat named Lucy and love triangles upon triangles upon etc. So odd, cause some characters are fully dressed and some aren't, Lucy has like two bird pets, but they can talk? And oh so many perfect reaction images from the cat blobs.

- Black Jade by Steele Snover

Lesbian mad scientist villain makes a raygun that turns other women gay as well. She literally gets a girlfriend and from that point onward the comic has no idea what it wants to do with itself. The author notoriously asked for $1600 a month to keep this comic going I believe.

-Don't know if youd do written fanfic riffing at all, but One Piece: This Bites by Xomniac might be worth tearing into if you ever get around to doing that. It's basically a self insert fic involving a fan of One Piece who abuses his knowledge of the series like mad after a literal RNG God decides to matoon him in that world. It kinda tries to ground the anime in reality and to be more "hard core" by mauling the main character and torturing villains and such.

-...lets be honest here ANYTHING by Dave Cheung

Just. Wow. Dave Cheungs list of wretchedness is something frankly unbelievable from what I've heard there's sexism, snuff and a lack of holding back all wrapped up in a generic non-anime style... US Angel Core is the absolute worst in particular as it is just...disturbed, like seriously bottom of the barrel disgustingness as it kills characters and subjects them to heaps of abuse to the point i dont even reccomend you look into it, its that fucking disgusting. Literally anything else, this one isn't so much a recc as it is a warning...

Is there a book you think everyone should read?

I'm going to give two recc's here, one for nonfiction and one for fiction. Nonfiction: The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein, because it lays out so clearly the currently political program which we are experiencing globally to different degrees of both severity and success. It's about the origins of the neoliberal project and the methods by which it has been tested/honed, and the outcomes in a number of these places. It's not the entirety of it, and there's a whole set of works to read after it (Aftershocks of Disaster, The Battle for Paradise, Disaster Capitalism, etc.) but it's a cornerstone work for me as a single book which delves into global attempts to create a blank slate upon which capitalism "without distortions" i.e. government involvement could take place; specifically either the use of existing disasters or the manufacture of disasters to use as a pivot point. For fiction, I think everyone should read. uh. well we'll go with The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner because it's great, and so so so tightly written, and I love it with all of my heart.

Frank Herbert, because @edgy-contrarian has gotten me hooked on it and I have so many questions that I want to ask Frank about the metaphysics of his books and I want to know what would have happened with Dune 7 if he got a chance to write it and aaaaa.

“I’m sorry to interrupt, but… This was your idea?” Alex raised a brow, looking from Santiago to you. Santiago had called Alex in to discuss the plan that the two of you had pulled together to monitor and hit both busts at the same time. You raised a brow. “Problem, Zambrano?” “Problem isn’t quite the word I’d use, this just… It doesn’t seem your style, Q. I mean you’re more the ‘take-your-time-and-go-over-lab-reports’ type and not the ‘rush-in-and-punch-a-hitman’ type.” You saw Santiago shift in his seat out of the corner of your eye, heard the irritated sigh that he made no effort to hide.

“Well we’re still doing our research, we’re just doing it double,” You countered, “Seems exactly my style, actually.” “Diego and his team will focus on the bust recce that he brought me, keep an eye out for any changes in the big players before we hit it. You and I will work the intel we got out of the dealers from the Jaramillo bust,” Santiago told Alex, “That sound alright to you?” “And Q?” “Q gets to play connect the dots,” You answered, giving Alex a bright smile. “Great. We’re gonna come into the office and find you drinking directly out of the coffee pot and looking like that meme from It’s Always Sunny,” Alex sighed, scrubbing his hand over his face.

“...You’re still doing it,” You said. “I’m not,” Was Santiago’s clipped reply. You glanced away from the food you had on the stove, giving him a knowing look. He raised a challenging brow at you, and when neither of you spoke, took a sip of his beer. You turned back to the food, pushing the vegetables around the pan to make none of them had caught in your distraction. There were a few moments where the only sounds in the kitchen was the sizzling of dinner. And then Santiago’s muttering was back. “Santiago!” You pointed over your shoulder at him with the spatula, “Either tell me what’s up or I swear to god I will use this.” “What are you gonna do to me with a spatula?” “You do not want to know, Garcia.” “I actually really do.” “Why are you muttering?” You whined. He was staring down into his beer bottle like the secret of the universe is at the bottom but, for the life of him, he couldn’t swallow another drop. “That’s work,” He finally said. “... Yeah, Santi. I know,” You turned back to the stove, unsure of how flat or bitter that had come out of you, but unable to change it now. “My point,” He added, tone on the soft side of harsh, “Is that Zambrano talks about you like he’s… Been around for more than a couple of months. And saying that you just sit around and compare reports when you helped him on that bust? That’s bullshit.” How was it possible that Santiago was more offended by that than you were? You’d heard him muttering since the two of you had gotten home -- not home, just, back to Santiago’s apartment, where you were temporarily staying -- and you’d figured it was that crack that ‘Brano had made about punching a hitman. Especially since it wasn’t the first time that Alex had brought it up since it happened. “He was just…” You shook your head as you reached out, turning down the heat under the veggies before you took a step back, “He was kidding.” “No he wasn’t.” “I wouldn’t have gone on that bust if he hadn’t asked me to, Santi,” You pointed out, “So he’s not completely wrong. And I’ll be in the office for most of these ops, too. Besides, you do tend to leap into things without looking,” You added before leaning over to check the food in the oven. “Not all things,” Santiago was muttering again, and you rolled your eyes a little as you straightened up. “Many of them.” You turned to face him and took the beer out of his hand, taking a pull from it. “Don’t let him get to you,” You said, passing the bottle back to him. “He doesn’t get to me.” “Bullshit. You don’t mutter for nothing, Garcia.”

-- Since you made dinner, Santiago did the dishes that night. The two of you wound up on the couch after you ate - you with a book, him with his phone. Since you’d started staying with him, the two of you wound up on the couch most nights. Where you tended to stay up later, though, Santiago headed to bed first. “Callin’ it?” You asked, feeling Santiago stretch beside you. He hummed the affirmative before he leaned over, pressing a kiss to your temple. You couldn’t help the fluttering feeling your stomach, or the small smile that grew on your lips. “Don’t stay up too late. I hear your boss is a hard ass,” he teased as he stood. “He is, but I think he’s got a soft spot for me.” Santiago snorted, reaching out and tweaking your nose. “Goodnight, Reina.” “Night, Santi.” You glanced after him before shifting in your seat a little bit, stretching out into the warmth he’d left behind. -- You found yourself falling asleep on the couch a couple of hours later and you pulled yourself up, leaving your book behind. You went to the bathroom first, washing your face and brushing your teeth before heading into the bedroom. You’d gotten exceptionally good at getting ready for bed in the dark. You tended to leave your pajamas out for yourself on your side of the bed so that you wouldn’t have to go rummaging around in your drawer (that is to say, the drawer Santiago was lending you while you stayed there temporarily) and risk waking Santiago up. That had happened a couple of times when you’d started staying there - when the two of you were still getting used to having one another around all of the time, and he was still shadowing your every move. You changed quietly, dropping the day’s clothes into your duffle bag (you’d been using it as a hamper for the time being) and pulling on your pajama shirt and shorts. You got into bed beside Santiago, settling down on your side, facing away from him. You heard him shift behind you and you held very still for a few moments. When he settled down, you glanced behind you. He seemed to still be asleep. You smiled a little before resting your head on the pillow and closing your eyes. -- You woke up alone. You always woke up alone. Santiago went to bed early and rose early. Unless there was an absolute emergency, you preferred to take your time getting out of bed. You sighed, looking at his empty side of the bed before peering around the bedroom in the early morning light. While most of Santiago’s apartment had few personal touches, the bedroom was different. At least, it was to you. Maybe it could’ve passed as anyone else’s bedroom to other people, but to you, it was utterly Santi. His sheets were navy blue, his favorite color (even if he’d sworn up and down to you that he was a grown man and not a kindergartner and didn’t have a favorite color - you knew better); he had a small stack of books on his bedside table - you’d never seen him reading any of them, but at least one got swapped out a week, so you figured that he read before he went to bed, while you were still in the living room; he kept a few things on his dresser - deodorant, and a couple of small boxes (you’d never gone through them, but you’d always been so, so curious) and one picture frame. It was a picture of him and his mom - he was a little boy at the time, couldn’t be any older than six. It had been taken in Colombia, at his grandmother’s home there. “We came down to visit for Christmas when I was younger,” He’d told you when he caught you looking at it (you’d tried to pass it off as looking for something in your temporary drawer, but he knew you better), “Mom would save up all year… That trip was the last time we were able to visit for a while.” “You have her eyes,” You’d told him. He hadn’t said anything after that, just given your hip a squeeze and left the room. You lay in bed for a few more minutes, eyeing the picture. When you did finally push yourself to sit up, you listened closely for a few moments. You could hear… Birds singing, kids playing outside… But nothing in the apartment. Santiago had left already. You sighed, pushing yourself out of bed. That was fine - as long as he’d left you some coffee. You got up and made the bed. It wasn’t something that you did every day at your own apartment, but it was one of those things that you’d discovered Santiago was fussy about. -- You stepped into the kitchen to find a half-full pot of coffee, with your mug (your temporary mug, the mug you were commandeering while you were staying at Santiago’s apartment) sitting next to the machine. “Fish?”

He cringes inward at his military nickname, it rips at his heart hearing it drip from his best friend’s mouth now. This man he would die for, almost has died for. None of the others had called him that in years, he insisted on Frankie with them. But he’d barely heard from Santiago, had no way of telling him.

He hears the words he’s saying, same shit he always says:

“I need a pilot. I can’t do this thing without you."

Years of that shit pulling him into another tour here. A deployment there. Again and again. Long after he served his sentence and was free to go.

“I don’t know, man. I got the new baby now,” he beams. Santi didn't know Luna and all Frankie wanted to do was tell him about her but he holds back, opting instead for, “And my lady isn’t into my doing this kinda shit anymore.”

He looks back at Will, a knowing look exchanged between the two. He is begging for his brother to step in, say something. Save him. He’s throwing Leah under the bus but, fuck it, it’s true. She isn’t into him doing this kinda shit anymore. And she wasn’t the biggest fan of Santi, always coming up with shit to get the rest of the boys into.

“Wha—what does that mean?”

Frankie lets out a breath he feels like he’s been holding all day and stands, knowing he’ll start shaking if he doesn’t. The knee bouncing is getting out of hand but he was hesitant to seek out anti anxiety medication while detoxing. He’d just sweat it all out anyway. Santiago’s droning on behind him, hell bent on staving off rejection.

“Did you read the text? This can change you and that baby’s life forever.”

Leave it to Santi to exclude Leah, he wasn’t necessarily her biggest fan either. But to just gloss right over her? Didn’t even fucking ask Luna’s name.

He crosses his arms, “What happened to that bullshit about going back to your mother’s homeland and empowering the people to police themselves?”

Santiago stares him down, a power grab of a laugh escaping him.

“Anyway, I lost my license. I can’t even fly right now.” Please just drop it, please just drop it, please just drop it.

Benny’s wrapping his knuckles. William’s looking between the two. And Santiago? Santiago is closing the space between them.

“I don’t need a pilot with a license, I’m in with the army down there,” he says as if that makes things better. It doesn’t. He knows it, Frankie knows it, the Millers know it. But if there’s one thing Santiago Garcia gets, it’s his fucking way.

“Yeah, I don’t think so.” Frankie’s firm, he’s not fucking doing it this time. He’s worked too goddamn hard on everything. Built a life out of rubble and was this close to pissing it away, he’s not gonna seal the deal on Leah’s promise to go.

Santi paces, frustrated, “Lorea is destroying that country. So we get to take out a very bad man, and, oh, by the way, there’s a winning lottery ticket stuck to the bottom of your cowboy boot.” He says that last bit with a mock tone and he’s smiling, believing he’s got Frankie now. A bit of a tease to rile his best friend up, get him laughing, get him in it. “Every guy in that gym would jump at this.”

“Come on, focus, guys! It’s fight night.” —————

“Hey!” He catches up with Santi in the hall, “I didn’t mean to call your shit bullshit.”

He didn’t, really. He knows where Santiago’s coming from but he can’t be the one in the thick of it anymore.

Another of those cool, indignant laughs, “It's all right.”

“I got busted,” Frankie says coolly, like he’s letting you know he left the light on, “it’s not a big deal.”

Santi’s head snaps to the right.

“Actually,” the taller of the two continues, “It's a big deal.”

“Coke?” Santiago’s trying not to let Frank’s addiction shock him, scoffing, “Jesus, Frankie.”

“Technically, it’s a suspension, I’m still under review but… it fucked everything up with Leah. I’ve been detoxing in Will’s spare room for weeks.”

“You’re telling me she didn’t know before the suspension? I don’t buy that.” Frankie tried to ignore the venom in his words.

“No, she knew. We’ve been in couple’s counseling while I’ve been getting clean, she said she didn’t know it was as often as it was. Just thought it was a hit here and there.”

“So things are good still?”

Frankie takes a deep breath, “We seem to have gotten back to good but that’s not where I wanna be, Pope. I wanna be great.” He looks to Santi and then Will, “What about you? What are you gonna do?”

There was no doubt in the world where Benny stood. He’d follow Santiago into hell. He pretty much had on more than one occasion but Benny always was a wildcard. Will was too calculated for that bullshit, he needed a plan. He needed foundation under his feet, not just charisma and Frankie would follow him. Frankie owed him his life. Will was the one to convince Frankie to hang it up. The one putting a half dead Frankie in cold showers and pumping his fucking stomach on no sleep. Will was the one Leah called when Frankie got too close to the edge. His brother, Luna’s godfather.

“I said if Redfly’s in, I’m in.”

Fuck! Fucking Tom. Frankie takes his hat off, adjusts his hair. I fucking hate Tom. —————

“Tom is not in our wedding,” Leah glared down the kitchen island at Frankie, arguing again about the goddamn wedding party. She didn’t even want it anymore. Had thrown her hands up, on more than one occasion, and begged to just run down to the courthouse.

And it all circled back to Tom fucking Davis.

“We served together for ten years, Leah! It’s a bit fucked up to have the rest of the boys up there in tuxes, Tess as our flower girl and Tom is,” he flails his hands out, “Three rows back with that one coworker who brings you coffee every Friday.”

“Bold of you to assume I’d let Tom sit that close to the altar, Francisco Morales. And next to Alexa? She is my angel and Tom Davis will be nowhere near her, do you understand me?”

“Then marry Alexa, babe!”

Leah put her hands on her hips, “Bitch, I might.”

He breaks and laughs, lifting his hat to rub at his forehead, “What do you want me to tell him then? You have plenty of friends who could be a fourth bridesmaid.”

“How about you drop Benny too?” She shrugs, “Just keep Will and Santi and I’ll keep my sisters. Two and two.”

He throws the hat on the counter, “YOU LOVE BENNY!”

“You're right, baby,” she laughs, eyes bright. A challenge on the tip of her tongue. "Drop Santi.”

He charges after her, ready for her words, and chases her through the house. Their house. Still nowhere near unpacked after a month and he’s cursing the unintended obstacle course he’s laid out for himself. She’s making quick work of it but, fuck, he’s out of shape.

He runs up the stairs, back screaming with every step as he gains on her. It helps his legs are much longer than hers.

She makes it to the bedroom, spinning to close the door but he grabs her before she can, pinning her down with all his weight. She insisted on the nicest sheets they could find and almost never made the bed, preferring to fall right into the softness without much work.

He ran his hand down her body, drumming his fingers in a soft rhythm until he reached her thigh, hitching it over his hip.

Her heart was still racing from the chase but Frankie felt it tick upwards as he placed his lips on her neck.

“Francisco,” she whined, “we can’t do this right now. We have to do grown up things.”

He smiles into the soft skin, “this is grown up things.”

“You know what I mean.”

He looks up at her, “hmm…” He’s got her right where he wants her, none the wiser as he reaches down to her knee and—

“Frankie, what are you doing?” Her voice comes out an octave higher, panic in her eyes pleading with him not to when the corner of his mouth crooks upwards and—

He digs his fingers into the soft flesh at the bend of her knee, smile blown wide as she screams out like a hyena.

“Stop! Stop!” She laughs through labored breaths, “baby, it was just a joke.”

“You're not funny,” he lulls with a kiss.

“Let’s get one thing straight,” her eyes filled with hurt and conviction, “I'm hilarious so… ya know, jot that down.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“But Tom fucking Davis is not in our wedding or I swear to god, Francisco Morales, I will call the whole goddamn thing off. It is my day and I’m not having his big Irish head in my wedding photos for the rest of my life.”

He laughs again, “Fine. But what should I tell him?”

“Tell him I fucking hate him.”

“You don’t hate anybody, baby, I don’t think you’ve got that in your heart. Be serious with me, please. What do I tell him?”

“Tell him,” she thinks for a second, because she absolutely does have the capacity for hate in her heart, “that I can’t choose amongst my friends for a fourth bridesmaid and so I just want to keep the party small with only my sisters.”

He seems satisfied by that, nodding his head. “But I am keeping Santi.”

“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“But…”

Her stare is like daggers, “I’m not talking about Tom anymore.”

“No. No, it’s not that,” he’s laughing, his life is all laughter now. “I just still think we should set Pope up with Kristyn.”

May I ask you about your polyamory experience? Are you the only one with multiple partners or does your husband do as well? Does everyone get together and have dinner and chat, or is it more private? And if there's a new potential partner does everyone come together and talk about it or is it mainly between the person and their partners? (For example if you took on another partner would your husband's partners be involved in the process or just you, the potential new partner, and your other partners including the hubby?) I don't see it a ton and I have questions. And I'll acknowledge that not all polyamory is the same and that I'm asking about your experience specifically, but understanding part can help me learn about the whole, so I'll take any info you're willing to give.

The main types I've seen are love v's where two people share one person but don't share each other (stop calling it a triangle YA authors because a triangle has three sides, not two! Aaah!) and full love triangles where the triad all share each other. Not to mention harems and reverse harems.

Oh of course you can ask! I am more than happy to be open about my personal poly experience. Incomming Bex/Mr.Bex lore.

So both of us are open and comfortable having multiple partners! Most of our experiences, with the exception of one partner each, has been all together.

About the chats and dinners, we have had three shared partners who we both knew for multiple years and been friends with before anything physical happened. So a lot of it was very together, many a time what started as a casual hang just as friends would escalate, the vast majority of our experiences were threesome oriented, and one very wild foursome. We were pretty open about it but that's just how our friend group rolls, everyone is LGBTQ+ in some fashion as well as pretty kink and sex positive too. The kind of people who talk casually over dinner about people we are seeing, the things we are doing, show each other nudes we’ve taken and recc porn to each other kind of people.

One of our regular poly hook-ups is still one of my best friends and was essentially my MOH at my wedding, no hard feelings or anything, it’s all fully platonic now. The other one was also in my wedding party, we are still friends but she has been having mental health issues and lives in another city now and is just not in a good headspace for responding regularly, hope she doing well and I make sure to let her know we love and are thinking of her, still invite her out for stuff too. The last one has fallen out with basically our entire friend group, no real reason, she just kinda pulled out herself, not sure why.

So as for everyone being in the loop while we don’t ask other partners for approval because we weren’t that serious with any of them but we did tell them whoever we were involved with. Regular testing and protection was a must, obviously, knowledge is power, Mr.Bex and I’s main concern is with communication with each other being long term/nesting partners. So while we make sure everyone knows who we are seeing we haven’t looked for approval from other partners, just with each other.

We haven’t gotten to engage much in polyamory since getting married because of the whole pandemic crap, unfortunately, we have things we want to do, plans for sure.

So the most recent experience was this year, for a few months I had a long distance thing with one of the lovely people in the slasher fandom, ultimately us staying friends was for the best but it was a good thing, I don’t regret it and to my knowledge neither does she, we are still close and talk basically everyday, still have a lot of love for her even though we weren’t right for each other in that way. The husband was very aware of what was happening with her, how it was progressing and she asked questions about him and our relationship history which I answered happily.

A while back before we got married Mr.Bex had an experience with this woman I will call E, and it wasn’t the best experience, he was very upfront about his expectations, she agreed, it would be mostly physical and casual, she was okay with this. They hung out several times, then they had sex and she immedately started to get clingy, break boundaries and push for way more than was initially discussed, so that was quickly cut off.

Overall I feel our experiences were pretty positive, the most negative was our only poly experience with another guy, Mr.Bex’s ex-best friend. That guy was a real piece of shit and if I knew back then what I know now about the kind of person he was I would have never gotten involved with him, he almost broke us up with his toxic fucking bullshit. We made it through and are stronger for it, the one nice thing was getting A-framed it is in fact, fucking great, totally recommend if you get the chance.

Essentially, the most of our poly experience thus far, and the most I like to have, is very physically based. Romantic love is tricky for me I won’t lie, I have almost never developed feelings for people who I didn’t click with sexually, sex and sexual compatiblity is one of the most important things to me in wanting to pursue a deeper relationship. It is to the point that sexual imcompatibility has killed feelings I have had for people. I'm not fully sure why but it's just the way I work, not like I need all my partners to be perfect, part of why poly is great is that you can get certain needs met by one that your others cannot do but if the sex isn't right then I cannot open up more and be in an explicitly romantic relationship. Something mentally just doesn't click for me.

I do care for all my partners and have had quite deep feelings for some of them but still I only wanted to really actually date one of them but it never ended up happening, her loss. I would love to have something more serious, the ideal for Mr.Bex and I would be a shared girlfriend and doing the triad thing, two women and one dude is my preferred poly dynamic for sure. There is something about all sharing in that set up that is just so great to me, it really increases the feeling, amps it up a lot and is so fulfilling in a very hard to define kind of way. I am also very aware the odds of this aren’t great and would love to have a solo girlfriend, a poly V with me in the middle would also suit me just fine and would be all too happy to see Mr.Bex get a girlfriend of his own too.

Okay so to sum up and make a very long ask a bit shorter, most of my poly experience has been sharing partners with Mr.Bex in a few FWB/hook-up scenarios because that is what everyone involved was looking for, I found it very fulfilling and overall a net positive for me and my relationship with him. A few negative experiences here and there but I still love and adore so much of what happened and what I’ve gotten to do.

Polyamory is very important to me and it really just satisfies something deep inside of me, the fact I have such wonderful people around and that Mr.Bex is so inclusive and supportive of me and my happiness as well as his own, respecting me and himself and most importantly our relationship/marriage, is just the fucking best. I really am lucky, all the hard times and talks and work and communication are really worth it to me at the end of the day.

I know the way I choose to live my life and engage in polyamory isn’t for everyone and it certainly isn’t the only way to go about it, but it is what is right for me. Thanks for asking this and I hope you found it at least interesting if not enlightening.

Okay firstly a good thing to remember is that the word “sodomy” comes from the name of the place “Sodom” but as the Bible tells us the sin of Sodom was not homosexuality or fornication but rather inhospitably. 

"'Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.” (Ezekiel 16:49 NIV)

Next it is interesting to know that in Orthodoxy, very little has been said about homosexuality by Church Fathers. Modern day reactionaries might be spewing hate but if we look back they rarely say much either way but we can look to Saint Paisios of Mount Athos and his interaction with a homosexual man who was suffering from sadness, which you can read about here and here. 

And as Saint Paisios of Mount Athos said too, “The letter of the law can be deadly.”

The rest is just up in the air. You can say that Jesus had many opportunities to condemn anything close to homosexuality but doesn’t. Japan was mostly a tributary state of minimal significance to China. So their r/ship wasn't as close as Hima depicts. Kiku as a lonely island nation perceived the relationship to be closer. Post-WW2, he knows that his greed/violence push their relationship to the point of no return; the damage is done. He also thinks China regards him with schadenfreude in the way he was defeated and his now stagnant economy. Having a conversation will just remind him of that, so he just doesn't bother lol.

Thank you for the interesting ask anon! Could you recc some articles/provide some more context for China’s view of Japan historically? Idk much about that (specifically how China perceived Japan) so I can’t say for sure what their relationship was. However, I think a lot of the canon strips have China as the one romanticizing/trying to further their r/ship, whereas Japan was the one distancing himself? In particular I’m thinking about that strip where Japan denies he’s China’s brother in front of Tibet and Yao gets kinda mad. So idk how much canon supports that Japan feels close to China; historically that’s a whole other conversation (without further research, my view on their ancient relationship is that Japan looked to China as a sort of mentor and saw him as a neighbor and a powerful influence he needed to get on the good side of, while China saw Japan as another one of those little upstarts who should recognize his power and bow to him if they had any sense of self preservation. I think (?) most of the time they would have been relatively amicable, especially while Japan was importing many Chinese structures of government and culture, but over time grew more distant and then broke into sporadic war, but at that point they weren’t much more than neighbor-acquaintances).

And you are 100% correct about the damage done to their relationship after WW2 and the feelings of schadenfreude with China; I also agree that Japan would avoid conversation about what’s come to pass between them but as I said in the tags, it might not be avoidable if China deliberately brings it up. As you said, Yao’s got the definitive upper hand in the argument, and I think part of him relishes how the tables have turned and wants to inflict that feeling on Japan; it’s still slightly painful for China to think about (but the overwhelming feelings he has are shame, humiliation, and anger) and he doesn’t bring it up more than necessary, but it’s satisfying in a twisted way to know he’s sort of won in the end, and gotten a measure of revenge? In that case,,,, Kiku doesn’t have many options and he’d probably just sit there and bear it as best he can.

i will never shut up about this. the popular members get hate too. honestly everyone will go on about how the hyung line members get hate (totally fair), but nobody wants to talk about the shit the maknaes have to deal with cause they’re popular. i’ve never seen someone as grossly sexualised as jimin is, i’ve seen many a horror. jk gets so much hate for having a lot of lines, as if it isn’t tiring and stressful for him. and honestly tae just can’t fucking breathe without getting berated for it. here’s a list of things he’s gotten hate for:

-suggesting a movie with a sex scene (which made him stop his film reccs)

-suggesting a song with sexual lyrics

-posting work from his favourite photography which contained nudity

some jk stans were mad cause jk got more likes on instagram (if you didn’t know the nominees’ pictures were posted on an insta account and people thought they were meant to vote for who they wanted to win.) jk had gotten more votes on his picture so people were mad that tae won, but apparently it’s not the case.

tldr; despite him being the most beautiful creature on this sad earth, it’s not just about visuals and it’s a big deal that he got chosen

general sadness

i’ll say this again. even though everyone thinks tae stans showing concern is twelve year olds trying to stir up drama, we have good reason to do so.

let’s take a moment to talk about stigma, the lyrics are already ambiguous and seemingly sad. this is what he said about it:

"stigma is about hurting. when i started creating it i wanted it to be about being cut over and over again. i wanted army to feel my hurting? in mvs I’m shown as a person who’s hurt, but it hurts so much that i become someone who enjoys that pain.”

and even that one time taehyung started crying when reading his letter to jimin on bon voyage S2, he started crying and talking about jimin being there for him when he was “crying in the bathroom”  uhh c h i l d

remember when the members jumped on tae to open up to them? the way they spoke...you can tell he had gone through something and it breaks my heart honestly, but it seems the members are caring for him. 

visuals

his visuals have gotten him far and this is just a fact. he must feel like his only significance in the group is being a visual. honestly when members are being acknowledged for things and it comes to him they’ll always say something like ‘thx for not being ugli lol’. 

i know this is a thing in kpop i guess but it’s as if he’s just there to look pretty and...growl? and what else? oh yes! be lol so random xd. this really pisses me off cause even in old interviews namjoon would introduce him as ‘the member responsible for 4d charms’ and you’d just see his expression drop immediately.

don’t get me wrong, it’s just a fact that he’s a popular bias cause of his looks, that’s just the way it is and i know it. we as people sub-consciously show bias towards people we find attractive in everyday situations. i’m pretty sure if he weren’t so stunning some people would probably bash him for his ‘alien behaviour’ rather than be like ‘oh ahaha tae-oppa is so cute l o l xd’ or some other cringy shit. 

anyway, he has a lot of fans because of his appearance, who probably think they’re the biggest stan just cause they’ve heard stigma like four times. maybe they watch some ‘taehyung extra compilations’ now and then, but they don’t actually know shit about him andng;sd’#;l#fdfd 

for those that don’t know, he had originally accompanied a friend to the auditions and had no plans to audition himself. he was spotted by an employee who told him he had to audition because he was so good-looking. his looks definitely got him where he is, i imagine it makes him feel like his only significant feature is the fact that he’s pretty. a lot of people have nothing good to say about him not regarding his looks/behavior. 

if you get really deep into it, i think he feels like his visuals are the only reason he’s loved by fans at all. although he doesn’t do it anymore, i’m pretty sure he used to exaggerate his attitude so that people would like him. i know this feeling all too well myself and while i obviously can’t pin point what’s going on in that pretty lil head of his, i think i’ve got an idea. you’re really just ‘weird’ and you try to pass it off as quirky then you’re like ‘oh you like this?’ so you keep acting that way, afraid you’ll stop being interesting. it was brought to my attention that people are actually dropping him cause he’s become more quiet recently :(. 

can i ask why? when taehyung is so beautiful inside and out, he’s definitely got flaws we all do, but while he isn’t perfect there’s just something so unique about him. he’s so clever sometimes yet he can have those dumb moments like forgetting what year it is, he seems like he’s just a cutie yet he’s so mysterious and vague. he’s this beautiful mess of self-contradictions and i love him for it, my favourite art hoe. i found a tae personality-analysis here on tumblr and it was an enjoyable read, op says they had a hard time with his mysterious ass haha

now let’s talk about tae being a golden maknae (hear me out!)

[some of the members really came in with little to no experience in their field though, isn’t that impressive?] yeah that’s true, like i’ve said this before but tae is a golden maknae, he can rap okay? it only sounds weird cause we’re not used to it. even in the table room skit they did that freestyle rap and tae was really good, i’ve read that yoongi himself was really impressed with him!!

and he can dance pretty well too um why isn’t he dance line ???

tae’s been underrated since the start, he was even hidden at the start as he was a ‘secret weapon’, for what? surprise surprise; his looks :o i’m pretty sure he knows this, and it all must add more to the probable mixed feelings he has regarding his role in the group.

Film Genre - ‘Saving Throws’ Self-Reflection

‘Saving Throws’ was a screenplay idea I had had for a while. Dungeons & Dragons is something which means a lot to me as I used to play a lot with my mum and my friends, so I really wanted to make a film about it at some point. It just so happened that my idea was chosen for this film!

The writing process began by actually playing a small D&D game by myself, trying to figure out an idea as to what would happen within the film. My script originally had more action, at one-point Nara would attempt to cast a spell and fail. However, I realised that within the confines of the brief and pandemic, the simpler the on-screen action is, the easier it would be to film and edit; so, I cut this out. Another thing in my first few drafts was two separate locations. The second scene was meant to take place within a nerdy bedroom. I was also meant to have multiple fantasy characters, seen from a distance through the trees, being killed. However, both of these things also went against the brief, so were cut from the final script. Part of my process was to draw some character art, starting off with some doodles, then making a more detailed sketch. This let me envision the look of the character and costume.

As producer and writer, I worked closely with Laura (the director) and Euan (the DoP) to ensure we would be able to pull-off this ambitious fantasy film. Both of them were super invested, constantly messaging me to ask questions about D&D to make sure they were creating a plan that would be true to the game. The three of us also went on a couple location recces, practicing blocking and shot composition. They also let me give input on the shots I had envisioned whilst writing (which was very kind of them). I also made several logistical documents to ensure that everyone knew the plan for the shoot days.

The shoot overall was a bit rushed, especially on the first day. We really wanted to get all of the first scene done as it is more complicated, and it requires prosthetic make-up and more costume.  This scene was to be shot during an overcast afternoon, then made darker in the colour grade to portray dusk. Consequently, this meant that we needed to shoot fast, and we lost light very fast. However, we managed to get all the Nara shots done, apart from 3. Fortunately, we did not need anything above the shoulder for these shots as they were all close-ups of feet, hands and running shots. The second day was harder in terms of set-up as we needed to carry a desk, chair, and lighting into the woods. We also had a lot more time for shooting as the second scene was to be shot at dusk so that there is little light. But we managed! Despite the November frost which blew in at 7pm, I survived!!

When it came to the edit, Euan (the absolute champ) did all the hard work. However, I made sure that the rest of us contributed as much as possible to aid him in his work. Similarly to the sound project, I made a list of all the required sounds we needed to source, and assigned members of the group. Robyn and I sourced a lot of Orc-related sounds, like gorillas and dog barks that could be pitched in edit. I found various battle noises as well as sourced all the fantasy forest ambience. I also arranged for Peter, myself, Laura, and Euan to have a Zoom call to record his lines. Euan realised whilst editing that we were missing a crucial shot, where Nara runs back to the tree after stepping on a twig. He decided to let us know this at 11pm, which was not the kind of pre-sleeping message I needed because I did then end up staying awake all night in panic. However, Euan, the legend he is, managed to cobble together a bit more of an artistic, relational style editing. He interspliced shots of the woods with close-ups of Nara running. I think it works! I think that our mistake on set actually allowed us to be a lot more creative with the editing approach we took. Euan set up a Discord server where he could stream his screen, this allowed us to drop-in when we could to give feedback and watch the film develop throughout post-production. Unfortunately, Euan left the sound edit quite late, this meant we couldn’t have our usual group feedback. I think that if we had had more time, we could’ve developed the soundtrack more.

Overall, I’m happy with how the film came out. I think that there are a couple of edits that are a bit clunky and jarring. This is the result of missing crucial shots whilst shooting, which could have been avoided if I wasn’t the actor. I do feel annoyed at myself over the acting, as I felt I could’ve given a better performance. However, it was Laura’s first time directing so I was also trying to produce and keep track of what we were filming to support her. I think, if Covid restrictions were less tight, we could’ve gotten an actor, that way I could have been more hands-on as a producer. Despite this, I do really like the more choppy, creative style of editing Euan went with. It helps with the runtime and creates a sense of disorientation that we all wanted. I think the sound design could definitely be improved. A key part of the narrative is the Orc, and I think there needs to be more growls and snarls added throughout the film to establish the beast that’s chasing Nara. I also think that the distant battle sounds needed to be louder to help the audience understand what Nara is hearing, as right now, it is pretty ambiguous. However, I really enjoyed what Euan managed to create, especially all by himself. Do not worry, I did reward him with a nice bottle of wine for all his hard work!

I was so surprised by how the final crit went. I think it’s my awful brain telling me everyone will hate it that caused me so much anxiety before the crit. Everyone was so kind and constructive in their criticism, but the overall consensus was that ‘Saving Throws’ was pretty good. First off, the peer feedback. I want to especially note Peter’s comment about my commitment to the role by “dying the mullet”, thankyou peter for enabling my hair dye addiction. Many people got strong Twilight vibes from the colour grade and quick panning shots of Nara running. The other strong reference was Stranger Things from the red lighting and nerdy-coming-of-age narrative. These were both references we talked about as a group, so I’m glad they came through in the final film. A criticism which I want to work on, is that people felt there should be more sound design around the laptop, more voices of Lainey’s friends coming through throughout the conversation. I think this would make it more realistic and would make the reactions of the friends flow better in the scene. Quite hilariously, a debate happened between a few people in the class about costume. Some wanted more fantastical costume, like that of Lord of the Rings. Others liked the simplistic costume I cobbled together as they felt it made the transition from fantasy to real-world easier for the viewers. Personally, if I had had more time, I would’ve liked to make something a bit more fantastical (as seen in my more detailed sketch). I kind of got landed with all the production design last minute, so I threw together something which would work. However, if I ever revisit this idea, I would like to add more mythical costume elements.

The feedback from Zoe and David was, as always, supportive and constructive. Zoe used the words “very enchanting”, which made me so relieved that we hit the mark on the fantasy genre. She had some great notes of sound design. She also felt that the distant battle sounds could’ve been pushed more, had more levels and different noises. She also suggested that we add bass notes to the soundtrack, in particular, during the battle scene, we should build this bass note, then cut it as the twig snaps. If we revisit the film, I definitely want to add more musical elements to help drive the narrative. David was super impressed with the many genres we managed to encompass in the film (he mentioned drama, comedy, fantasy and coming of age). He too wanted more sound effects, both the Orc sounds, the environment sounds, and battle sounds; but also the second scene, where he felt there should be more sound effects from the laptop call. He noted the jarring cut at 0:47ish, explaining that it is jarring due to the fact everything else is edited together so well, that it jumps out as wrong.

From producing this film I have learned to manage my time better. I did manage my own time, but I realised that, as producer, I should be managing everyone else’s time on set better (I know I was acting on set so it was very difficult). I also think I should try not to take on as much work as I did this module, as even on this last film I producer, wrote, acted, location scouted, sound sourced and did all production design for this film, and I found I was extremely overwhelmed. Yet I still felt I wasn’t doing enough to help out Euan, so overall I was just a bit of a mess, and I feel this affected my group a lot in post-production. I also learnt a lot this term for working within the pandemic, which is a great experience to have (not a great experience in terms of a viral pandemic, but in terms of knowing how to work on and off set within the confines of this situation). I surprisingly enjoyed the strict constraints we had to work within, both the 3-page script and 3 minutes maximum, as it gave me the experience of being critical of my work to know what to cut. But it also allowed me to be more creative, as I wanted to tell a full story within these confines, and my group managed to do just that!

I loved this module, as I was able to explore genre a lot more than I have been able to in the past. I like having genre as something to refer to whilst making a film, both in conventions but also breaking those conventions. I’ve found myself now writing some scripts in my spare time which came about through my exploration of genre this term.

what is the gayest podcasts u know? 👀

thanks for asking anon, i am happy to help!! just a heads up, i don’t actually listen to that many podcasts (under 10 i think), so this list is very incomplete, and i’m sure other people have lists more comprehensive, but this is a list of stuff thats gay (canonically) that i have listened to and can confirm that it does actually have decent rep, as well as what that rep is. there are other ones i know where it’s hinted or a minor character is but those don’t count bc i’m not gonna give you table scraps when i can provide a meal, you know?

the bright sessions - ofc this is my go to, among the main cast there’s a confirmed gay character, confirmed bi character, and a relationship between two boys. one of the characters is pan ace, although the pan part is only confirmed by word of god, a minor character is a lesbian, and one of the characters doesn’t know his sexuality but it’s not straight. i also like it bc they do try to confirm sexualities in canon so there’s no wondering like u know. u are aware bc they tell you. i like that i like the explicit use of labels (it also makes having a character w/o labels mean something rather than be a way to avoid calling him gay, instead, he can just be questioning bc he isn’t the Only One u feel)

the penumbra podcast - unlike tbs, penumbra takes place in different universes where gender identity and sexuality are non-issues, so while it’s never explicitly told to you in canon, a good majority of the relationships are same gender ones, the protag of one of the main stories has a relationship w/both a man and a woman (not at the same time tho which is disappointing- in character, but disappointing- but hopefully penumbra is coming in clutch w/the polya stuff we all deserve, but polyamory isnt lgbt+ so thats a little unrelated) so u know he’s bi (thats not the purpose of that relationship but as a side effect it informs the listener that he’s bisexual), penumbra is a bit all over bc of the multi-universe thing so i cant really do a discrete list like w/tbs but listen trust me it’s solid & super gay

alice isn’t dead - the main character is a lesbian and she’s married to her wife and she talks about her wife and while she isn’t happy with her wife in fact the whole plot is her finding her wife (well im not all caught up bc i suck but it was where i am) bc the genre is horror but it’s still very gay. unrelated but i also really like it bc the main characters are almost entirely women which. should really not be as novel and as refreshing as it is. but anyway that’s not lgbt+ rep but it’s still Good i think.

within the wires - i don’t want to say the main characters are lesbians bc they could be bi or pan (i think please dont quote me its been SO LONG since ive listened) but it is two women in love. or who used to be in love. a reconnection of sorts? the genre is also horror and the format is kickass and i cant think of anything to say about the relationship that isn’t a spoiler i’m so sorry but please listen

welcome to night vale - The Classic™ you have def already heard of it but it means so much to me in terms of rep as the first real positive rep i have ever gotten so im gonna mention it. the main character is gay and has a male love interest and they fall in love and go on dates and there is no waiting it’s first ep bless wtnv. lot of backlog so i always say to save it for road trips but listen. i love it. actually just check out night vale presents (the network) everything they have is solid for rep

the strange case of starship iris - i will recc tscosi until i die i love it so much, no confirmed w/words sexualities (at least not in canon and if there’s word of god i missed it) but u know the main character likes women in the first ep, it’s not actually canon atm bc of buildup and whatnot but i’m pretty sure the main ship is two women (theyre definitely into each other anyway), there’s a character who’s a trans man, and i guess a nb character? they may not call themself nb bc thats a human word but the gender binary doesn’t exist to aliens so for rep purposes i would consider them nb. 

an honourable mention, i can’t vouch for it just yet but i started listening to the adventure zone mostly because i know there’s a gay character and a character who’s a trans woman so there’s that information that is completely unverified by me but that i feel totally confident relaying bc i was online when one of the eps came out and boy did everyone yell a Lot. EDIT: also a wlw couple whom i havent met yet either but im GONNA and im excited

Starting 2nd Year

Going into 2nd year I knew I had a basic idea for a film that we might be able to use at some point, but that if we did use it I wanted the chance to be the producer. I pitched the idea to my group and two members began developing the script. Looking back I wish I’d gotten more involved in this as the script deviated greatly from the original story. I also created call sheets and schedules, got release forms and filled out location recces, as well as securing the locations, paying actors,  and making the final decision on any crew disagreements. Though I found it challenging to manage all of this, this was the first role I’d done that felt like the right kind of challenge. I definitely found that I was better at looking at the film as a whole and making sure every role was executed as planned in order for the final piece to come together. 

One thing we’ve addressed many times throughout our final year was the idea of “creative producing”, and this is something I think I would have benefited from learning about earlier. Essentially this is the idea that the producer is not just there to fill out paperwork and keep everyone else happy, but to make creative decisions that overall impact the film. This is a very valuable opportunity for the rest of the crew as the producer is overseeing everything, and can see what’s working overall and what isn’t.

Though I did read up on the role of the producer in different articles online such as “So What Exactly is a  Film Producer?” (New York Film Academy, 2015), where it was summed up by saying “the creation process behind filmmaking is a very fluid one and subject to change at any given moment.Sometimes, you’ve got to put the finance book down, roll your sleeves up, and get your hands dirty”, I found that one of the best ways to learn was through discussion and communication. This meant asking my crew what they needed from me, what they wanted prioritised, though also putting my foot down when I knew there was a reason to do things a certain way. But it also meant discussing with my peers, finding out how another group did something differently, how that worked out for them, and the sorts of production schedules they were running.

Evaluation

For my FMP I was instructed to do three brainstorms in order to find my theme. The first was a general sort of mind map suggesting several ideas and how you could portray them, this helped me narrow it done to two ideas for themes. One of the themes I thought about was Urban which correlates to the idea of graffiti and street photography. For initial research I created a survey on SurveyMonkey, when collecting results, I realised that only two questions really helped with my final piece. The first one read, ‘What type of area do you live in?’ This helped in terms of showing me what people see depending on where they live, for example if someone lives in the city, they may see more graffiti than someone who lives in a suburban area. The second question asks, ‘What do you like about Nottingham?’ This again helps me to understand how to appeal to a certain audience, for example someone stated that they like the different shops, restaurants and cafes therefore I could’ve found some really nice architecture and snapped an image of that. My schedule is still incomplete as I need to go through how everything helped me, that being said it should be ready by tomorrow, it shows all the main work I have completed throughout the project. The proposal I had written had reached the word goal and though my idea had changed I believe I stuck to everything I had written and that really helped me outline the idea I wanted to portray. I found the most helpful research was in fact my artist research for Gus Powell as well as the different forms of technique research I did including the list of shots I looked into. Gus’ photos were something that inspired me as Candid Photography is something, I was interested in. The technical research helped to form an idea as to how to take the photos and what shots to use. I didn’t find the Banksy research all to helpful as that was more for art than photography but I found it fitting as I wanted to photograph some graffiti pieces. I did all research asked apart from demographics as I was unsure as to how that would work for photography. However, I feel the research I have done is up to a high standard. With the use of the research I did, I learnt about the different ways to use filters when editing as well as being inspired by other photographers and artists therefore, the use of research helped me to develop a way to present my final piece and the use of other artists and photographers helped inspire me to. I feel my demographic would be towards anyone from any age group who are into the more industrial scene and therefore the psychographic would be people interested in photography or people who are interested in making the streets look nicer or others who are interested about the variety of people who live in a city. I feel this is because of the use of colour and the way the images are set out. I found this out when going through my images and choosing which was to keep and which I should’ve gotten rid of. The use of colour in the images to make them more vibrant is what I believe attracts a crowd and is what will get me noticed by my chosen demographic. This is important as I want my work to be recognisable to people and one way to do that was through vibrant filters and colours which in a way sort of reflects to me as a person and that’s what I like to see in my work. At first, I planned to produce my work as a collage on a canvas but realised I didn’t have time for this so I changed the idea and instead planned on producing on an A3 piece of paper as five shots, this made things a lot easier but it was hard to choose five shots as there was, in my opinion, so many great ones but the ones I chose had shown examples of depth of field which made them look more effective. The process for editing was a simple one, I used an app called Gimp which I have learnt to use over time on my own. Gimp is a free editing software that is similar to photoshop, the main thing I used were different settings for changing different colour hues and the temperature which gave the photos a more vibrant look, I also used the saturation tool in order to make an image more vibrant and alive in my opinion. For pre-production I produced a small location recce, it was somewhat accurate but I did also state that some locations weren’t recorded in my sketchbook as there are so many busy areas around Nottingham.   I experimented a lot with the depth of field and the use of lighting in the photo, some photos came out darker than others so I continually switched the ISO in order to get the perfect lighting. When using depth of field, I experimented with the focus and weather it’d focus on the main subject or the background. The use of experimentation really helped in improving the photos and made it more likely for me to pick one of them as I had over a hundred to use, therefore this helped for some to stand out more than others. Like stated before, I used a lot of different tools that changed the colour hues and made the image look more vibrant, I also messed with the brightness as well which helped in the look of the finished product. My work helped me in terms of timing. For example, I’d usually only get around 30 photos for a contact sheet but I was told not to come back unless I got over 100 which pushed me to reach the limit. I also was planning to do this big project but I elected to do something easier due to timing issues. The project wasn’t hard nor easy but I feel I’ve done well overall and improved as the year went on. For me, the one thing that was an issue was a timing but I overcame this by changing my idea slightly. I would definitely organise myself more if I did this project again or even change my idea to a different thing like character design as that would be more my speed. Working independently gave me a lot more freedom as to what I was going to do with my work. Apart from the few adjustments, I kept to my proposal and schedule and this helped outline my idea throughout. I think my time was well spent on this project but maybe I could improve when creating filters as I could add more effects like black and white. Overall, I feel good with my final piece and hope to pass on this project.

Evaluation

I created a documentary photo book based on the title ‘Local’. It is a book documenting over population in East Leake and the effects it has on the village. I chose ‘local’ because I am new to my village and there is a lot of controversy about new people in the village that I wanted to explore. I wanted to know more about why people had a problem with the new builds and new people. I also thought it would be interesting to document the change that the village is going through at this point in time. It could be a great reminder of the growth that East Leake is going through. I came up with this idea one evening when I wa scrolling through the facebook page seeing a post someone had made asking why the community in East Leake disliked new comers, while going through the comments it made me want to research this further and capture their problems.

We did a task in class where we had to go to a specific location but were not given anything else as a brief, we had to come back to class with enough photographs to create a six or more photographic series. Not having a brief meant we had the freedom to create a series about anything the challenge was being put on the spot and coming up with something to photograph. This inspired me to go out in the village and do a bit of a location recce and find places I could photograph for my final piece. There was another task in the beginning of this project where we had to capture college life in a series. This inspired me to create a narrative or an idea that my series could follow.

I chose to focus my photographs on the main problems that overpopulation has created in the village. The originally village road, the T junction, on the first page is to show the change it has undergone and how with its size it battles to keep up with the growing number of people causing traffic and delays.  There are a few local shops in East Leake the more commercial being the Co-Op. However with the growing population there will be a higher demand for bigger, more commercial shops taking business away from the local owned business. Since East Leake is an up and coming village it is marketed as a great place for families which means a high demand for spaces in schools, especially the Primary school, which doesn’t have the space to expand and is unable to add more spaces which creates long waiting lists and very bad traffic problems during peak school hours.  There is a high demand for the doctors in general in England and since the village has gotten much larger the health centre hasn’t grown with it creating long waiting times and only getting appointments months away. Having more new builds means building over the fields and many who live here say that it takes away the ‘charm’ and ‘country feel’ that this village has to offer. I wanted to photograph ‘Tin Town’ as it is one of the worse parts of East Leake, every village has its bad parts, tin town is ours. I wouldn’t say it is horrible, just not the best East Leake has to offer. The village wants to fix the problems before they get out of hand and before adding more people as it may make East Leake a place no one wants to live in. I wanted to take portraits of people that live here but due to bad planning I ran out of time.

I made my book A4. I chose to bind my book with a saddle stitch, because of the type of paper I was using was thicker than normal paper and I had a lot of pages stapling was out of the question. The staples just wouldn’t go through so I moved onto stitching the book. 

For not originally liking documentary photography, I’ve grown a new appreciation for the work. I definitely think I could’ve done more primary research and shown over population better. However I still like the outcome as I changed the concept that the photographs were trying to convey. 

I’m quite proud of my photographs, I’m not too sure if they’re very documentary but there are never any precise restrictions when it comes to documentary photography. Although it didn’t take me too long to come up with an idea the execution was harder than I thought it would be. Social anxiety stopped me from approaching the general population in East Leake to ask questions so I went to facebook which did pose more problems because all three groups refused to post my questions. So I had to find a different way to research so I used old comments and letters written to the council by the community. I do wish it was a bit more personal as in the community got involved but I made do with what I had and I’m happy with the outcome of photographs in my photobook.

If I had planned my time better I would’ve liked to have interviewed people in real life and then taken their portrait and then put their photo besides a photo of an area that they had an issue with. I would’ve then quoted them in the book. However I just didn’t plan very well and ran out of time so I had to cut it. I also would’ve liked to make m own post on the facebook pages but you have to message them to post something and they denied my request to post my questions for people to answer.
