I’m only surprised the HP one isn’t the top (anymore). Contemplation has almost 100 more kudos than the HP one. Anyway, those top 3 ones are actually some of my most cringey, early writer things, I nearly didn’t do this meme lol (hence why I didn’t link them separately). I wrote the two Poirot stories when I was maybe 14? And the HP one was around about the same time, so my skill as a writer was very lacking, to put it nicely. And with the HP one... I only haven’t taken it down because I don’t really want to remove a story offline, but I have no intention of engaging with that fandom ever again for obvious reasons. One day still I might dump the remaining, disjointed 45k that’s floating about somewhere. But probably not.

Otherwise, yeah. The Sherlock one makes sense to have kudos because it’s a bigger fandom, but it really sits around the same level as all the B7 fics (25-35). This really reminds me that I have SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much half finished fic out there with and without my writing buddy that needs to one day get up there. It would certainly expand my fandom list, which I would like to do, even just for a bit of variety. Genuinely can’t believe I have no Raffles up there when I feel like I’m picking at some writing every night lol. I even wrote most of a piece for Raffles Week on Monday but it was very spur of the moment fulfilling a stupid fic idea that was dismissed, not that that would stop me, but at last! Written! lol

I‘d like to get back into writing and posting in the nearish future but I’m not sure when I’ll be back in the swing of things. It’s not writer’s block exactly so much as... slightly delayed returning to real life. I find myself out and about a lot more because I have the freedom, so I’m not "stuck” inside all day. That being said, I spent huge portions of my pre-lockdown life writing too... it’s just life’s natural ebb and flow of writing. I think I’ll get back into it this year. We’ll see. :)

au where din accidentally time travels back to the sunset of the republic and everyone takes one look at this dude with unpainted pure beskar armor, a beskar spear, and a SECOND FUCKING DARKSABER who never shows his face and all immediately clock him as a time traveler... way back before the Revan was even a thing. And he must be hiding his face BECAUSE HE’S A MEMBER OF THE TAUNG, A PROUD WARRIOR RACE LONG DEAD. HE’S A REAL-LIFE MANDALORIAN CRUSADER!!

meanwhile din hasn’t even noticed he time traveled. he just assumes boba’s ghosted him or something because he’s not answering his comms. he’s just going around taking bounties and trying to avoid all these mandalorians crawling out of the woodwork (presumably to challenge him for the darksaber or pledge loyalty or some osik he doesn’t want to deal with). wow, the new republic sure has grown fast. and gee, luke’s order is much bigger than he thought! he’s honestly surprised he’d never heard of them before.

so literally the only one who knows he’s from the future is grogu, but he’s also an infant so he’s more interested in biting his own feet and learning how to walk than clearing up the misunderstanding.

adhd father brown hcs??? sign me tf up!

Okay, so I’ve had most of these thoughts/interpretations for awhile but I was not expecting to morph into such a ginormous post

A few caveats before we begin.

1) Obviously due to the period drama setting, Father Brown would likely never be officially diagnosed as having ADHD, as the disorder as we know it today only started to be seriously studied in the 1970s.  Furthermore as I mentioned before, I head canon him as having either the “primarily inattentive” (what used to be called/separately diagnosed as ADD) or the “combined”  subtype of ADHD , which  statistically  fly under the radar more  than those with more “hyperactive” symptoms. 

2) I don’t think he is intentionally written and/or performed as ADHD-coded and I don’t expect canon will ever  “confirm this.” A LOT of character types/ tropes in fiction have developed around characters that display neurodiverse  symptoms that may not be immediately obvious to neurotypical content producers or consumers. In particular the “brilliant-but-lazy” and/or “charmingly eccentric” character shows up frequently in detective fiction.  (Other examples: Hercule Poirot is pretty regularly interpreted as having OCD and Sherlock Holmes as having ADHD and/or autism spectrum disorder). 

3) There’s a bit of discourse about the word “neurodiverse” and who should be “allowed” to claim it. Some people consider it a term that should be exclusively used to describe  people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, most experts believe that “neurodiversity” encompasses a much wider umbrella that also includes ADHD, OCD, Tourettes/tics, dyslexia, PTSD, various sensory and processing disorders, and more in addition to ASD. 

For the purpose of this, we will be using the word in the broader, more inclusive sense that includes ADHD and other similar disorders.  We will also be using terms such as “special interest,” “hyperfixation,” “comfort object,”  “stim/stimming” , etc that are more commonly associated with ASD--but that are also present in many individuals with ADHD. 

Now to the main event. (below the cut because it’s really long.) Also feel free to comment or add to this post.

Father Brown & ADHD (head canons, symptoms, and interpretations)

He is absent-minded and easily distracted, especially when it comes to mundane day-to-day tasks.  I can’t even begin to count the number of times Mrs. M has to remind him to eat, sleep, clean, have something repaired,  and/or do paperwork And it’s pretty strongly implied that the squad’s interventions (and especially Mrs. M) are just about the only thing keeping him on task.

Special mention has to go to the time where he just straight-up LEFT MASS in the middle of his homily, because he’d suddenly thought of a potential lead for the case and needed to investigate it immediately.  (”The Jackdaw’s Revenge”)

Another special mention has to go to the sizable pile of overdue library books that he’s supposedly “been meaning to take back for ages” but kept forgetting. In this same scene, Mrs. M specifically refers to him as a “hoarder.”  (“The Lepidopterist's Companion”)

He is fairly observant when hyperfocusing and tends to notice details and inconsistencies that others might not. He’s also very good at making surprising and unexpected “bigger picture” connections. He’s also more likely to consider multiple possible theories at once rather than focusing on the most likely, obvious one (as the inspectors do). 

His permanent special interests are mysteries and theology. Interestingly, his theology interest extends beyond Christianity/Catholicism--as he is also very knowledgeable and curious about several other religions/denominations/ways of practicing faith, as well as atheism and more generalized spirituality. He was even willing to give Kalon’s “so -obviously-a-cult-and-not-even-a-cool-one” organization a fair shake at first. 

In addition to his permanent special interests, he is also very curious in general about a lot of  different things and will often develop brief-but-strong interests in something pertaining to the case of the week. 

He stims primarily by riding his bike everywhere. The fact he loves his bike enough to name it (”Bucephalus” after Alexander the Great’s horse) suggests that it may also be a comfort object for him.

His other major stims are eating (more about that later) and touching his umbrella.

Speaking of his umbrella, a decent case could be made for it as a comfort object.” Father Brown takes it with him whenever he needs to leave St. Mary’s/the presbytery, even on occasions where he’s unlikely to encounter rain. The few times he is separated from his umbrella we are meant to see this a really big deal.  His lending Flambeau his umbrella in “The Judgement of Man” is presented as a gesture of true kindness and friendship. When Father B. is forced to leave his umbrella behind in “The Whistle in the Dark,” Bunty immediately buys him a new one. 

His two biggest vices are his tendency to overeat (especially his love for sweet things) and his interest in listening to the horse races. Fortunately, neither of these things has become a big problem as of yet (especially as he’s content to listen to the races without betting on them and has Mrs. M to stop him from eating too much sugary treats). However, it is worth noting that people with ADHD are especially susceptible to overeating,  gambling, and other addiction problems, as they are constantly seeking stimulation.

His relationship with Rejection Sensitivity is  somewhat unique. Because he has such a strong support system, he seems to handle personal rejection fairly well. However, his RSD  still manifests in terms of redeeming others. He seems to hold himself personally accountable for every soul he is unable to save.  This may explain why he is so tenacious when trying to getting people to confess and repent their wrongdoing. We see this particularly strongly with Katharine Corven (which was always a lost cause) and with Flambeau (who he’s had much more success). 

Father Brown  quickly forms strong bonds with other characters who are canonically identified as being neurodivergent.  Examples of this include: Lucia Galloway (dyslexia) from “The Face of Death,”  Jeremy (brain alterations  due to a childhood automobile accident)  and Sarah Mulgrew (ambiguous disorder but shows possible signs of PTSD and autism )  from “The Maddest of All,” and Arthur Malmont (ambiguous disorder but possibly autism and/or another developmental disorder) from “The Labyrinth of the Minotaur.” 

In “The Maddest of All,” Father Brown is admitted to a mental institution as he is showing signs of “impulse-control disorder.” While he is largely exaggerating his symptoms so that he can be admitted and investigate, it makes sense for him to simply exaggerate symptoms and tendencies that already exist rather than completely “fake” a different type of disorder entirely. During his evaluation with the doctor, he even admits to overeating and kleptomanic tendencies--both habits  that Fr. Brown partakes on a fairly regular basis even when he isn’t “faking.” (Granted the kleptomania is usually just clues for a case or deserts left unattended, but it’s still worth commenting on).

I have a holiday-themed request this time! How about the GMS boys celebrating Halloween with MC?

I think this is the perfect way to start Halloween!

(I had a little bit of a problem with this requests and so it’s been sitting in my inbox for a while, but seemed like the best time to complete this one!  Now while I live in the United State of America doing some research it turns out the Halloween isn’t that big of a deal in the United Kingdoms.  A lot of my friends who spent years over there often had the day go by without any kind of recognition.  So in trying to find a nice in between we have these.)

Sherlock Holmes

John Watson

Neither of them really go out of their way to celebrate it at home.  Especially knowing Sherlock would just poke at all their ideas of bringing some of the spirit of Halloween inside.  So instead they both volunteer to work the trick or treating for the children’s hospital.  MC in particular was super excited to work on a fun Haunted House for the kids.  By the end of the night and after the clean up they were pretty exhausted when they returned homed, but both giggling and laughing while talking about their favorite moments.

James Moriarty

MC doesn’t like ghosts, he knows this.  He also knows that outside of that she loves Halloween.  He throws a party for their friends.  He chooses a couples costume for them  to make sure that everyone knows that they’re together.  So even those on his list who hadn’t met MC before can tell that she’s off limits.  He has a little surprise for her later in the evening of course.  She thinks he’s going to pull her aside, tease her, promise how he’s going to make the night even more interesting after the party.  

It’s a seance. 

Because what kind of Halloween party wouldn’t including a little raising the dead?

Mycroft Holmes

It’s that time again?  

The day mostly goes by unnoticed.  Though with very little prompting they find a nice restaurant that is decorated at least to mark the occasion.  They just enjoy each other’s company when they start exchanging stories of Halloween past.  When they get home Mycroft shows MC all the old pictures he has of their Halloween costumes, somehow finding himself telling her of the various traditions around the world.  Just because he doesn’t celebrate it doesn’t mean he isn’t knowledgeable.  

Jack Stillman

He excuses himself.  Preferring to be alone on this day or taking care of work.  Leaving MC to her own devices.  Course if she should go out and join some friends or go to a party she finds herself with a shadow after a short while.  There are many things that go bump in the night, he’s very familiar with most of them. 

Sebastian Moran

He needs to make sure that James doesn’t need him.  After that he is all MC’s.  They spend the night watching old horror movies, often finding themselves getting into quiet and small debates behind the monster’s motivation.  They hardly get the night to themselves before James joins them, but the more the merrier. 

Jeremy Cassel

He picked out a costume for MC weeks in advance.  He has a list of different parties he wants to hit, but he keeps a close eye on how much MC drinks.  Because once they’re done checking out these places, and once he is certain the blush on her cheeks is from feeling giddy and being swept off her feet, it’s time to go home.  For Jeremy it’s just another excuse for a date night.

Hercule Poirot

No MC.  No.  He does NOT want to make Jack o Lanterns.  Despite his hesitation, however, he does find himself making them all the same.  Helping MC decorate his house.  He does live in a more residential area meaning a bigger chance of trick or treaters.  In the time he has lived there he couldn’t say he had any visitors on Halloween, only to be chided by MC who insists it’s because he did not decorate his house.  

They did get one trick or treater.  Which MC gushed over with embarrassing excitement, which had Hercule wishing they would get more just to see how she lit up when there was a knock on the door.  

Otherwise they spent the rest of the night listening to a few podcasts that where telling ghost stories that Hercule found for them. 

George Lestrade

He had to work.  There was no getting around it.  It was one day of the year where they got odd calls.  Pranks gone wrong, prank calls, people believing their homes were haunted, or just someone’s cruel idea of fun.  After all the things he would see, it was calming at the end of the night to see no sign of Halloween anywhere when he got home.  Though this peaceful moment would be short lived by a scream somewhere inside.  He hurried in, throwing open doors and rushing to where he heard the screams.  Only to have a pillow thrown at him from across the room.  MC had decided to watch horror movies on her own while waiting for him.  Little vampire bat earrings dangling down from her ears.  

So there was a little bit of Halloween at home, but it made him smile, reminding him that there was someone waiting for him.  They would spend the rest of the night watching Halloween cartoons, keeping in the mood, but avoiding anything too scary.

Mikah Hudson

He wanted to show everyone his new girlfriend.  It was a month of vigorous nagging to make sure Sherlock and John understood what his plans were.  Finally on Halloween he and MC spent the day preparing snacks and decorating 221B.  When it was time for the guests to arrive there were a few extra people to crash the party.  Mycroft shrugged, who wouldn’t want to spend a Holiday with family.  Hercule and Jeremy where certain they got invitations though Mikah doesn’t remember sending them.  Then some point through the night he was positive he saw Professor Moriarty disappear around a corner.  It got more chaotic than he had been hoping.  

Calling in a favor George came to break up the party and help Mikah regain some semblance of control.  He apologized to his friend’s but couldn’t help feeling relieved.  Now was the more difficult part, explaining to George why everyone else was there but not him.

You are amazeballs! Thank you thank you thank you for giving us all of this wonderful scenarios for Guard me Sherlock! I couldn't stop squealing over the babies one and can't help but to ask for more. So can we please get scenarios of how they would fuss over a pregnant MC? I can already imagine them freaking out over it more than their pregnant wife, lol!

Now let’s talk about them finding out and handling it like reasonable adults.

Sherlock Holmes

On the surface you would think that Sherlock wasn’t worried one bit.  He barely seems to react and is always on his computer.  Mikah and John fuss over her more than he does.  However all MC does one day is winch because of a sharp pinch in her side and Sherlock comes at her with a long list of other possible side effects and demanding answers.

While on the surface it looked like he wasn’t worried he had poured himself into researching it as much as he could so he would be better able to help take care of her.  The further along in the pregnancy the more he demands John or Mikah or Lestrade, or even clients if they’re there to help with certain activities that MC would’ve done before hand.  

John Watson

He’s a doctor right?  There’s no need for another doctor to be helping her, not when John is there to jump to all the worst possible conclusions.  MC can’t get even a little bit of a sniffle without John pulling out the thermometer to make sure she isn’t sick.  

James Moriarty

One day she’s telling him that she’s pregnant the next Jack is exhausted from putting together a nursery in a night.  James has a list of approved doctors to see and even considered having Sebastian kidnap John to get his opinion on MC’s health.  He marks his calendar when it would be the earliest for them to go in and get an ultrasound and see what his child will look like.  

He would shower her with compliments about how beautiful she is and he just stares at her all day not wanting to miss a moment of this. When he finds out it’s twins he’s excited, while Jack is already making calls to get the extra crib and materials ready for him to adjust the nursery for them.

Mycroft Holmes

MC is no longer to be left alone.  Even while he’s at work and she’s at home.  There is always something there to act as bodyguard.  He takes breaks to come home and check on her vitals to make sure she is still well.  Eventually his mother shows up demanding to help out around the house and while Mycroft is not exactly keen on the idea, he agrees so MC doesn’t have to worry.  Whenever they are out and about together Mycroft is always close to her so he can catch her should she stumble.  Though all MC sees is a calm expression.

Sebastian Moran

If we want to see a shocked Sebastian, this is a good way to do it.  She informs him that she’s pregnant and he looks momentarily horrified.  She informs him that she’s almost a month along and he looks even more scared.  At first she’s freaked out when he grabs her hand and drags her into the office with James and tells her to tell him.  James congratulates them though he admits he’s a little jealous. 

In the Months to come Sebastian touches her expanding stomach often while asking questions about how she feels and relaying as if it’s a report to James at night.

Anytime a stranger gets close to them she reaches out for him to keep him from pulling a gun as suddenly, while he was protective before, his uncertainty on what to expect has made him even more worried for her well-being.  

Jeremy Cassel

Whatever business he was conducting or thinking of conducting can wait as Jeremy makes sure to spend as much time as possible with MC.  Touching her, holding her hand, asking her about cravings often.  As the baby bump gets bigger he makes it a ritual to rub coco butter on it before bed and kisses both her and the bump goodnight.  

Hercule Poirot

He makes so many jokes that others start to chide him on not caring enough.  However he has a small journal in which he had started to make notes since the moment he found out, monitoring the changes that MC goes through, her average heart rate, temperature, anything he can jot down.  Watching for any irregularities.  He plays it cool and often asks for substitutes when they go out to eat if she orders something that he has heard was not good for pregnant women and them calmly explains to her why he asked for those changes.  

George Lestrade

Now George was not previously included in this original post.  This man would want a large family.  He wouldn’t be happy till he had 6 kids, 2 girls and 4 boys, the oldest being a son, and the youngest being his last daughter.  It’s a crazy chaotic household.  The only people allowed to pick on their dad in their eyes is themselves.  Their personalities varying in everything but their protection of him.

When MC first came out and told George he went around and told everyone.  Anyone he couldn’t find right away in person he called, when he stumbles in and tells Hercule about how he’s going to be a father Hercule chuckles at him and questions if he should be going around telling everyone or staying at home to celebrate with MC whom he left behind.  

He hurries back and quickly goes to make her comfortable pledging that he would do anything for her, all she would have to do is ask, mumble, or just wish it.
