OMG SHUT YOUR PIEHOLE I REALLY LIKED THE ROMANO FIC😭😭 it was soo cute and i feel like he is never getting enough love despite his random spikes of popularity thoughout the years, i just think he needs more headpats!! though my question is… you have a “im writing a romano fic” post from exactly one year ago… was it this fic?😭 sorry but i think that would be really funny and relatable tbh i have yet to complete any of my hetalia drafts from 2016 let alone last year

But to answer your main question, it actually is not I’m afraid 😔💔 as funny as it would be I completely forgot I made that post, Romano is just one of my favourite characters so I enjoy writing for him- HOWEVER, the fic idea I had WAS incredibly similar, the premise was essentially going to be Italy flirting with the Reader but the Reader being more interested in Romano. This was actually inspired by an old fic I wrote where it was some comfort stuff for Roma.

Vampire: Pointy teeth, ashen/pale

Werewolf: Human form normal, usually wolf form is big and scary humanoid

Dragon: Usually has a human form with some dragon like aspects if so desired(wings and horns). Or can be totally human with the faint hint like oblong pupils and sharp teef

Incubus/Demon: smol horns and little tail when low level. Big scary horns and long whip like tail when higher level

Merperson/Siren/Oceanid: Dealers Choice if they got the fish tail or are more like the og, which are beautiful human formed nymphs who lure unsuspecting souls to the water

Kitsune: Fox sprites. Known for their mischievous nature and trickery. But they can also be contracted to corrupted souls as a guide/servant of sorts. Usually have fox ears and tail in human form.

Cryptid: idk make them spooky and weird. Mix them with an animal or two into a corrupted form

Oni: big scary ogre monster. One to three horned. Good for size difference stuff.

Dryad/Nymph: human like forest sprites that are tied to nature. Dryad more tied to a certain tree. They’re supposed to be drop dead irresistible and to harm their home would harm them

Fairy: up to you if ur thinking fun sized or not. Some fae/fairy lore has them usually as human like with some odd aura about them and have a trait of some sort. Like dream weaving or influencing the mind

Witch/Wizard: a person of magical abilities

Elf: the sexy kind not the keebler kind. With the long pointy ears and long beautiful lines in their designs.

Chimera of some kind: idk if muse has a second form or some kind of transformation incorporate something spooky or different to monsterfy it.

Free card: request a monster not on the list. So long as they can still communicate in some way.

🔮 Any advice for writers working through burnout or writer’s block?

I do have some, actually! Most of this has probably been said before, but here’s some stuff that has helped me:

Take a break. Like a real break where you’re not even trying to write or plan for your writing and set a minimum length for the break ahead of time. If you find yourself wanting to write during the break anyway, don't. Better to make yourself take the time away and give yourself a chance to miss it; also, you don't want to teach your brain that the breaks are conditional it needs to be a real period with absolutely zero expectations of producing anything.  

When you come back to writing afterwards, don’t bite off more than you can chew. Start with small goals like “I will write for 10 minutes and if I am not enjoying it at the end, then I will honor my feelings and stop”. If you have a hard time with accountability, try telling a friend you will start at a certain time and having them message you once the time is up to ask if you were able to follow through and how it went. 

Fresh air!! If it’s feasible, preferably somewhere with trees or a body of water. Could be good to go alone as well, or with someone who won’t expect you to talk the whole time. Making time to let your thoughts wander and to daydream is important for replenishing creative reserves.

Try a hand at drawer fic. Write something really different from what you’ve been working on with no intention to ever publish it or necessarily show it to anyone. Just let yourself focus on the actual creation process without all the pressures

Talk with friends about some of the things you love / that get you excited about whatever thing you’re trying to write (may work better with fic than original work but could probably be made to work in either case)

Put on really good music when you sit down to write. I recommend something instrumental personally, since my brain has a hard time making words if I am listening to someone else’s, but that sort of thing is different for everyone.

Read books with prose you find inspiring and take notes (can just be on your phone) on the writing techniques the author uses that you like or specific word choices and phrasing you find interesting. Next time you sit down to write, revisit it to get some ideas flowing

This last one is kinda specific and may only be applicable to certain types of writer’s block and burn out, but I was in a bit of a writing slump not long ago and reading this blog post was very reassuring to me. To generalize it a little more, maybe try looking into other writing communities or listening to other writers share their experiences with the same thing. One of the scary things about writer’s block / burn out is that when you’re in it, it can feel like it will never end. Hearing from other people who have been in the same position as you can be really reassuring <3

2. Grian.Trans.Canon? (Or scar? Or maybe both???)

3. With the glyphs is there only one way to use them or could you possible make them a tattoo and still you them. Since they are then constantly touching the glyphs they could possible do the magic of a mage. If they had multiple glyphs he could mix the glyphs somehow.(like how Luz mixes the glyphs by drawing them with eachother but instead they do it with their ✨️MIND✨️)

4. Also I love the idea of papapulse. Like I imagine Pearl or grian (most likely grian:^P) and Impulse going full demon mode tl protect them. (I saw that you tagged "Parent impulseSV (Video Blogging RPF)" in troubke in the dead of night🥺👏😍) Also is there different types of demons and what type of powers do they have?

5. In the fic "sitting in the garden at your feet" they have a whole picnic and all the adorableness. Do they go on more picnics frequently? (I really hope soo) I would guess they do since in villainous things they were also on their way to a picnic...but then yeah...poor birb tbh and poor scar

6. Have Ren and Martyn already have their wedding or are they still waiting? I wanna see treebark and I want to see mumbo ask grian go with him as his plus one to the wedding<3

(Though treebark owns my heart, Grumbo will always win) Don't talk about scarian I've never left the desert and don't plan to either😘

7. Okay soo in the fic "weight of living" there was this one scene where etho stared at grian. Here's the quote: "Etho eyes him for a moment, his gaze unreadable as he does so. It leaves Grian with chills. Weird."

Is it possible that etho is a Watcher? I'm mean   he is definitely not human(or maybe he is an immortal human?)  Etho may recognize grian, either as an old Watcher or a new Watcher to be made. Or maybe etho just thinks it is weird to see scar with grian(A HUMAN) The last one is more logical <:^)

8. On that note with Etho. You never confirm nor deny if grian is the "lost watcher" but what if I were to ask you if EFFO is the lost Watcher. I don't have proof but-...yeah idk

Wait wait just had another thought what if Pearl is the Watcher???? When the dream bugs ate her dreams there was a purple mist! Huh huh gotcha!/silly this is purely a joke🤣

9. Will we see a bad boy grian phase or possibly a drag queen phase🥺👉👈. Since it often mention that grian was a dare devil(still is:^P) or did grian have such phases. One of my friends is kinda a dare devil and he did drag once and I feel since grian might be the same there...

10. What did Scott do with the shard? Did he just entirely get rid of it? Also is Scott pure evil or broken. Maybe with the lost of his brother(Xornoth) did he turn evil or was evil just in his genes?

2- GRIAN TRANS CANON !! honestly, just operate under the assumption that any grian I write is trans JFGDHFKKJDFG it's my comfort character and I get to project on him /silly (no trans scar though </3)

3- WAUG OKAY -- I've answered this kind of question before but for the life of me I can't find it D: I'm gonna keep searching for it, and when I find it I'll reblog this with that information mjfdhkfghfjg I don't wanna contradict myself LMAO

4- PAPAPULSE MY BELOVED 🥺I really wanna write more with him ueueue. I actually haven't done much world building for sb!demons but I'm going to say that yes, there are different types of demons! and they all have a wide range of different abilities :3

"Rashomon" is such a messed up film, I loved it

I don’t usually see classic films—or anything made in the nineties. For some reason, their bad cinematography had always irked me, and their camera angles disgust me to this very day.

In the last couple decades, technology has advanced at a fast rate. And you can really see that if you’ve seen these classics. They just have a different vibe to them. And as someone who consumes a lot of latest cinema—and anime—it’s actually really tough for me to accustom myself to the cinema of that time.

But, you know what, my university doesn’t care. They made me watch Rashomon, a film by the legendary Akira Kurosawa.

For those of you who don’t know who Akira is: firstly, shame on you. Secondly, he’s one of the most influential Japanese directors who is known on an international level. His films were brimming with professional creativity and they really influence many directors. In fact, he’s the sort of director whose films are studied in film-schools.

I knew the director and what sort of a legend he was, so I was really excited for the film. But considering his last film was in ninety-three—and Rashomon, by the way, released in nineteen-fifty—I was kinda… expecting myself to not like it…

I loved it.

So much that I can’t stop myself from writing this blog and yapping about its themes and plotline and characters and direction and all that technical stuff.

#01 - Plot

You know how we start reviews here, lol. So, the movie Rashomon follows a priest and a woodcutter contemplating in a shrine, under the rain. A commoner arrives, all drenched up, and begins making fire and drying himself and his clothes as he tries to make small-talk with those guys. He noticed it—the two men were genuinely worried about something. So he simply asked what the case was.

The woodcutter starts yapping about how bad the humanity is, how evil is spreading all over our tongues. He told the man the story is more horrific than war, famines, murders. The story is about how he, in the middle of the forest, witnessed a samurai’s hat, a woman’s hat, an amulet, a bunch of cut ropes, and… a dead body.

He did the obvious—inform the authorities. And what happens next is… quite absurd. So absurd that I can’t explain it here. And I don’t even want to. Just know that there are different characters—a bandit, a woman, a samurai. And all tell their side of the story about how the death of the samurai took place.

And their accounts vary too differently from each other. The bandit talks of his valor, the samurai of his despair, and the woman of her innocence.

But here’s the catch—the accounts don’t match with each other. All of them have different stories to tell. And then—spoiler alert—the woodcutter tells how he himself had lied; he had seen the whole scene unfolding, but refused to tell to the court. His account seemed to be the most trusted one, but since he had his reasons to not reveal this story to the court, you can never be too sure.

In fact, the film is known for this—you never know the truth about what actually happened. You just hear from the characters—and they won’t tell you the truth. They have their motives to lie. Rashomon Effect, a screenwriting technique where an incident is shown by different characters’ differing—and even contradictor—perspectives is loosely based on this film.

The writing of the film is done masterfully, especially in terms of the plot. And the setting justifies it—the story is based on a couple centuries ago, so you can't really know the truth if the people are not lying, because the technology isn’t so advanced yet.

#02 - Characters

The characters are absurd. Some of them are even screwed in their minds. And no, I’m not joking.

The bandit just cared about his image. He told the court how he lured the woman into his charms—which seems highly unlikely—and how he didn't even need to kill her man. And he told her how, after dishonoring her, he cut the ropes of the man and went for a fair fight for the woman and defeated him. The guy was just flexing shit he didn't do.

The woman, on the other hand, knew what happened with her was not acceptable. She knew that society wouldn't see her as a victim. She knew she’d get side-eyed. So she tried to convince the court of her innocence. She cried crocodile-tears. She begged for mercy. For forgiveness. And she tried to appear as innocent as she probably could.

The samurai… Imma talk about him later. But yeah, as the woman had predicted, he said he didn't see the bandit as the convict, but rather believed that his wife was at fault.

These guys are messed up in their heads. The bandit was too dumb and full of himself that he just flexed his physical and mental muscles. As is later revealed, the woman was at fault too, and she used her wits to get her husband killed. And then she ran away. And the samurai’s whole belief system was all around the place.

These characters so obviously symbolize different sorts of evils that are present in society. And the different reasons we lie. We lie because of these three reasons—we don't understand the truth, we wanna hide what we did, and we wanna make an image for ourselves. The samurai, the woman, the bandit.

#03 - Themes

The story tackles a number of themes, the most obvious being what’s truth and what’s lie. And, on a deeper level, why do we even lie.

The film is an example of… those kinda films where characters are really screwed up, the story is really screwed up, and all the stuff that happens needs to be psychoanalyzed. Like Chainsaw Man. Or something like that. I hope you kinda get what I’m trying to say. This sort of story may not be realistic, but it seems to explore the darker sides of humanity and is based on simply complex characters who are screwed in the head.

The film answers a pretty important question—why we lie. There are different characters, different perspectives on the murder, and none of them seem true. Every one of these characters seems to be lying one way or the other. Even the most unbiased, trusted account—that of woodcutter’s—could be false, since it’s revealed how he had his own reasons to lie.

You don't know the truth. Not even in the end. You don't know who to believe and who not to—that’s what the film has taught you.

All these characters had different sort of motives to lie. The bandit tried to show what kinda womanizer he was and how clever his plan was. He tried to do the impossible, get what he knew he couldn’t get, and still came out victorious.

The woman, on the other hand, tried to convince the court how she did nothing wrong—in fact, wrong was done on her. She even tells the court how sinful she felt, and then tries taking her own life because of it.

The samurai, who had died, was contacted through a spirit-medium. He told the court of the despair he felt, the sense of shame he was drenched in, and the loss he faced after the incident. He said how he saw the real face of her wife that day, which depressed him so much that he killed himself. For the sake of the plot, let’s say all that spirit-medium stuff was real.

Everyone had a reason to lie. Everyone wanted to show themselves in a particular way—the bandit wanted to show how clever he was, the woman wanted to show how innocent she was, and the samurai wanted to show how depressed he was. The woman put all the blame on the situation, the bandit on himself, and the samurai, oddly enough, on his wife.

Another theme I saw being well-approached was that of patriarchy. I mean, the story is set in Japan centuries ago. There were a lot of talks on the honor of a woman. The samurai didn't see how his wife was raped, he believed it was his wife’s fault. From his account, you can’t say he hated the bandit—the rapist—one bit. But he despised his wife. He told the court how his wife switched sides, even though the woodcutter’s account says how her wife freed him after being raped and begged him to kill the bandit. But the samurai refused to fight him for a ruined woman.

Those are not my words, for the record.

Also, the woman then, quite shrewdly enough, attacked their male-egos and made them fight a duel. Where the bandit killed the samurai. And she ran away from the place after that.

The samurai’s story tells us how messed up his patriarchal beliefs are. And how the woman quite easily made him fight for her just with a simple you’re-not-a-real-man-if argument.

And, according to the woodcutter, they didn't even know how to use swords—something that none of the two guys ever told the court. Rather, they were busy telling how quite bravely they fought.

So, on a thematic level, the movie is quite well-thought. I still believe there must be a lot of themes that I’ve completely missed—that’s how dense this story is.

Watch the film. I didn't want to, but I’ve given you a lot of spoilers. And because of this alternating between what to hide and what not to, I did a pretty messy job. So I want you guys to watch the film. And then come back here again, on this blog.

First of all, I’d like to apologize for my months of disappearances with no explanation. I know that was probably very frustrating for people who had requests or were waiting for more posts. Since the start of this year I’ve been horribly overwhelmed with irl stuff which I won’t get into for the sake of keeping heavy subjects out of this update, but I’ve finally been able to get some free time to get back to the things I love. Which moves me onto the next talking point.

I really have missed this blog and writing, but I think I need to go about it a different way. I put too much pressure on myself to fulfill requests without flaw and in a timely manner that I pushed myself into burnout, and so I’ve been thinking about how to do this the past couple of days. First of all, I’m deleting all requests in my inbox while I figure out what I wanna do. My inbox will still be open for a little while, but please don’t expect me to get around to it. I likely won’t do all of them, but I will make a post about it if I do stick with a request. I’m sorry to anyone who had a request or something in my drafts, I understand if this is upsetting.

I think from now on I’m mostly going to post when I’m inspired, maybe every once a month or so on average. The time pressure of someone waiting for me to churn something out really turned me away from writing so at least for a while I’m going to be completely unscheduled with my posting. Again, I’m very sorry to anyone who had a request in.

As well as this, I’d taken a BIG break from dead by daylight. Not only because of the irl stuff I mentioned making me too busy, but also because I kinda lost my love for the game and the characters. Thankfully, my feelings about it have been rekindled, and I’m really excited to return to the community.

Lastly, to my friends I’ve made through this blog. I’m so so sorry for disappearing and cutting people off, I know it doesn’t excuse it but I’ve been so socially overwhelmed the past couple of months that I’ve neglected to keep up with my online friends. I hope you can understand I wouldn’t have ghosted anyone without warning if I could’ve, but the circumstances made a lot of things extremely stressful at the time.

Introductions are kinda important:

Since I haven't gotten anything edited and ready, I suppose I should introduce myself so my blog isn't just blank. I may have jumped the gun creating this without having a post you know ready... But I digress. Now let's see, I'm in multiple fandoms, actively and passively. There are ones that I only write, some I only read, a few that I do both [though to be honest if I write the fandom, I don't usually read it... I'm usually too distracted by the plot bunnies], and others that are from my younger days. The fandoms I started with when I was in my early teens I haven't interacted with too much, but still go out of my way to look through, even though they are small and some of the fandoms are just about dead. I read more than a dozen fandoms though, and write at least half of them. Most of my Arcane knowledge comes from my League of Legends days and the lore of Runeterra. I don't have netflix, and have only seen parts of the show. So nearly everything I write is Canon Divergent from that alone. Now I do have a few rules for myself when I write going forward to post online. The first is simply that I do not want to post a multi-chapter fic if I do not have at least 80% of the story written down and half of that in edited format. I often get bad cases of the plot bunnies, and I will write more than I have time to edit. All of the time. The second is trying to keep a schedule for updates. I write nearly entirely for myself, and I will read my absolute bare bone fics all of the time without editing them, because I know my brain. This usually means editing is on the back burner. I don't want that. I want to be better at editing and have the practice since I also write original fiction in my spare time to entertain myself. I don't care to much for TV or Movies, but I do watch youtube sometimes, though it's not very often. I do enjoy reading and going for walks as much as I can. For anyone who has stumbled upon this introduction and read all the way through, I have a question, if you are in any of my fandoms, what your favorite ships?

I loved Mote’s little fantasies of possible scenarios or of imagining an interaction in a different way (the card game with June, convo with dead Pat). I’m impressed by the creative team behind it. I won’t think about this much after today I don’t think but I liked this little show.

Overall Impression: I feel like this should be higher just because it’s got a cool concept and the cinematography’s good but I felt like maybe 1 emotion during this whole show (the hug in the car), which sucks. The writing in the show sucked, both in terms of relationship development (there was none. why were they from A to Z without B C...) and the fantasy/lore aspects. In a better show, Dongbaek’s dying wish to be the one who remembers next time coming true would be a punch to the gut but here, I don’t gaf

I’m kinda in the mood for something longer and with darker tones though, so I’m looking at like Strangers from Hell, The Devil Judge, Beyond Evil which all seem to be horror or thrillers (and with BL undertones? I hear about Devil Judge a lot). I think I’ll watch Strangers From Hell cuz it’s like 10 1-hour long eps bc the others are 16 eps with 75 or 65 mins each ep.

Overall Impression: The whole descent of Jongwoo was interesting to see, as well as how his environment and people around him made him who he is and what he had in him from previous experiences and by nature. The acting and cinematography/atmosphere were good. I liked the hallucinations/dreams (I loved it when I couldn't tell whether he really was breaking the keyboard until the CCTV showed it or whether he was beating up the supervisor until the others came in bc he had violent imagined scenarios so often) and I'm glad it was just 10 eps. I do like to think Moonjo's obsession was tinted with gayness. I like that he's dead but still alive through Jongwoo; that even if he was killed, he still won.

It’s a good one to watch for learning/practice because the sentences were pretty easy to comprehend, even if I didn’t understand All of it. It was only 25 mins and so it was all very fast/shallow (it was cute so far) but I heard there’s gonna be a 2nd season, so maybe we’ll get more

Overall Impression: Very cute and also had a fair bit of emotional moments, I liked it! Also got a fair amount of Korean practice out of it. However, it did take me 4 days to watch this though bc I kept watching only one or two of the short eps every day bc it didn’t have that pull of wanting to watch more. So it’s cute and well made the the actors for Choco and Milk did so well haha but I’m not super invested in the characters and probably won’t think about them much.

Anyways what do you want to be the diety of, dear friend? Let's assume whatever you pick gives you a basic level of magic. I'll by going through a couple different options that I think would have fun dynamics but I'll have a few general ones too.

Firstly imagine,, when Felix summons you,, and instead of being spat out of the Void like you were, you land gracefully on your feet, already (somewhat) used to teleportation. And Felix is half unconscious because he really drained his magic trying to find Rime. You go over to him. Maybe you heal him? Maybe you just go to poke his face a little to see if he's dead. Anyways in his delirious mind he does think you're a diety - not because he senses your power or anything but Pretty Person With Lights Behind Them (the lights being his own magic still swirling through the room) and then he fucking passes out.

You meet Anisa! She puts her sword at your throat and you casually just bat it away because It's Not Like A Mortal Can Kill You Anyways. And Anisa is confused and she does it again and you just bat it away,,, this happens like five more times before she realizes that you Clearly Are Not An Assassin Sent To Kill Her, since you would have done so already if you're really that nonplussed by her sword.

When that thug is coming towards you in the tavern you're kinda just staring because Oh What Does This Mortal Want? :) And then Sage comes to help you and it's like Oh The Mortals Are Fighting! I Never Get To Be Up Close Like This It's So Fun! :) And then in the hallway Sage is hiding you from those guys and you're just peeking a little like Wow Mortals Sure Are Funny :)

Just think it's really funny if they way everyone finds out is very casual cause like,, why wouldn't it be? You've been a diety for, presumably, a long time. It's not new to you.

Felix is talking about how gods are really just puffed-up spirits and you're like Hey!! Fuck You!!!! I Rule Over Spirits!!!!!! And he's like 'MC darling what in the world are you talking about??' and you reveal you're like, the diety of the Underworld or Death or whatever and you summon this massive glowy scythe and Felix is just,,,,, not okay,,,,,,,,,,,

Anisa, Saaros and you are stuck beneath the cultist temple. You let out this really annoyed sigh as you poke around 'I cannot believe anyone would allow their temple to look this dilapidated. My temple would never look like this because my priestess is component at her job. Oh I hope she remembered to feed the cats while I'm away....' and Anisa and Saaros wonder if you hit your head until you just use a spell to make a bunch of plants grow like 'oh this'll get fresh air in here!' because you're the diety of nature or whatever

When Elowen corners you guys in Mournfall but then there's a crowd and she leaves and Sage is about to go after her but you stop him,, you calm him down almost immediately,,,, and you're rubbing his shoulder like 'woah there little hellcat, I admire your desire for bloodshed but don't do me any favors, I can get my worship later' and after (at the bar) he's like 'wtf were you saying?' and you just grin and use your magic to fuck with these two dudes (gender neutral) at the bar and make them get into a fight and it's like Oh I'm The Diety of War :) Did I Not Mention? :) Seeing People Fight Is Fun :) and Sage is just choking on his beer

You keep impulsively taking things from the marketplace because you're used to being given tribute/gifts and the Starsworn have to pay for you all the time

There are,, a lot of dieties,,, that can turn into animals,,,,, you morph into something small and ride on your partner's shoulder

Someone bumps into you and doesn't apologize and you're summoning your holy weapon to smite them before the Starsworn drag you back and calm you down

Scylla is gonna ask if you have like,, holy alcohol or whatever,,,, as a matter of fact so will Sage

Tulsi wants to see your weapon!! Can she play with it test it out? It's looking kinda worn, you must not have used it in a while. Can she sharpen it? She just wants to mess with it and try to see how it works

she's survived enough to know how to follow horror rules, so she may surprise them with how good she is.

that being said, there's a huge difference between klutzy teens in costumes with no peripheral vision and a fucking hunter.

One of the best roommates ever, please don’t ever let him go.

Doesn’t mind helping with your part of the chores if you are too busy bless him although he himself is a bit messy on his own.

Going to each other rooms to ask about how the other’s day was or just to spend time together.

Whenever a play performance is coming you know because Sakuya’s script can be found all over the apartment: between the sofa cushions, on top of the microwave, on the laundry basket…

If on the first performance you are not inside the apartment you always leave a few notes sticked on the bathroom mirror to wish him luck. Sakuya keeps them all.

“Are you sure you are free, Y/N? You don’t have to come every time If-”

“Sakuya listen to me, If I ever miss one of your shows just assume I’m dead.”

It becomes a tradition for you to prepare him spaghetti Neapolitan to celebrate closing night and even tho at this point Sakuya knows he’s still 100% moved.

Not really a talker, but you get used to it. At this point you can even have full conversations with his lazy responses and everyone who steps on the apartment is confused.

Because he’s always listening to music his Bluetooth tends to connect with yours a lot.

Everytime you come back you wonder what might await for you inside the shared apartment. It never disappoints.

He’s a pretty good roommate overall. You both decided on a specific schedule for cleaning and buying stuff and it hasn’t failed yet.

When Tsuzuru comes back from visiting his family he brings back half of the house between fruits, vegetables and various presents his young sibling push into his suitcase.

You two have a drawer full of university students' discounts and coupons you both use all the time.

Midnight study sessions for finals on the kitchen table or the living room to keep each other from losing it.

“Is it morning or are the lights too strong? I can’t tell anymore.”

“I don’t know Tsuzuru, just pass me the coffee bowl.”

“I finished it but there’s still Redbull on the fridge.”

Still once every blue moon you two will make some popcorn and spend the night laying on the couch watching movies with blankets over your heads. It’s little things like that what keeps you both sane.

Has weird schedules, sometimes arriving late into the night to the apartment while other weeks you can easily encounter him at 8am like clockwork.

His room is always closed. Once time you managed to catch a glance from inside and saw at least three computers occupying the desk and a few piles of documents on the bed.

Listens to podcasts on hyperspeed even in other languages while you stare like??

Surprisingly supportive as a roomie. Everytime there’s something going on with the apartment you mention it and next morning is practically solved.

“No- that’s the thing, it’s great! I thought he wouldn’t fix it anymore"

You follow his curry blog and send him different locations and menus of restaurants he could visit that you notice while he’s away.

Honestly I just wanted to make another challenge that involved colors and had a theme but then it changed into something completely different so I thought I share. 

The Jam Legacy is a 9 generation legacy challenge based on fruits you can put into jams/jellies and has a specific color palette if you choose to go with it. Each generation is a quirky bunch and meant for some weird gameplay. So if you enjoy weird gameplay, nice fall colors, and maybe 9 generations of fun, this might be your jam.

ok so I was gonna just leave but then I figured ppl would want an explanation/time to send messages or w/e so here it is. When I started this blog I had every intention of just fading into the background and using fandom to help me cope with what was going on around me for a couple of weeks. None of this was part of the plan. And in some ways, that’s good. Good things have happened to me bc of this blog, but the discourse and the drama and the heightened emotions and people’s unwillingness to see other people on here as human beings with whom they can have a decent nuanced conversation has really been taking a toll on me. Also, atla fandom is not kind to Black people, and the more I’ve spoken up about it, the more harassment I’ve gotten. Further, I’ve seen people I trusted treat other Black people in fandom poorly, and honestly, that was kind of the nail in the coffin for me. It just seems really pointless for me to just keep going through all this bullshit for a fandom I don’t like participating in anymore and which is honestly kinda dead (at least the parts of it I like). I don’t care about ship wars and I don’t care to keep seeing people misconstrue everything I say to suit their own ends and I don’t care to keep arguing with people online instead of living my own damn life. I’m done. 

As far as fic goes, I’ll finish not ready to make nice and like ripples, like love, and my Jetru week projects. The Zone collab is still happening. I’ll probably put out a couple more donnaverse fics (honestly, those are my favorite to write and they make me happiest). I make no promises for anything else I’ve said I’ll write. And yeah, that includes ktwab. That was conceived as something entirely different from what I want it to be now, and I don’t know how to make it into what I wanted. Rewatching The Travelercon arc and First of all Love Artagan so fucking much, but one subtle thing I love is the relationship between Caleb and Artagan.

They both love Jester in their own ways, but unlike some of the Mighty Nein they don't see her as Naive or treat her likea child. They trust her, and her ability to make decisions for herself, and they don't just perceive her choosing to see good in the world as being ignorant to the bad.

Like they way Caleb was more open and less hostile, while still being wary of Artagan because he trusts Jester and her ability not only to choose "good" people, but also how she can take a not so great person and make them better.

And how both of them make all sorts of beautiful Magic for her.

I don't know I just like two Chaotic Gingers who love a blue Tiefling.

Disclaimer for me (not you anon, you're valid and very polite and share my exact feelings), but I value every relationship Jester has with the M9 and Artagan and some tertiary non-Nein members and think they all offer different things for her and could easily be romantic or platonic, so I just wanna get that out of the way, because not liking how everyone handled the Artagan situation does not mean I don't value Jester's relationships with those characters. This shouldn't need to be said and I don't maintag my asks anyway and I'd like to think my blog is a safe space for complex opinions, but, unfortunately, nuance is dead.

OKAY WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY... Boy, TravelerCon was a giant who's who of which party members believe Jester isn't a good read on people (some were projecting way too hard though), and that's all I'm gonna say about that, because even though I damn well knew that Artagan choked a guy to death for fun in Campaign One, I fully trusted his relationship with Jester from the first time he revealed himself. I trusted him more when I knew he was Artagan then I did when I just assumed he was, because, like... For a chaotic being, Artagan is predictable. What could he be using Jester for? He doesn't even like being a god. So I kinda spent that whole arc being OH MY GOD, GET OFF JESTER'S ASS ALREADY? ARTAGAN'S GREAT.

BUT I love how Caleb handled it and I love the very likely WHY he handled it very well. First of all, Caleb has always been a big believer in fairy tales. He cherishes this one story from his childhood where fey are nice and kind and don't steal children from their mothers and showed it to Jester BECAUSE it mirrored her own life (and because he's a victim of the other side of it- Trent isn't fey, but you could rewrite the entire Blumendrei story as a Changeling Tale and barely change a thing). He knows what the VERY thing that everyone else is suspicious of Artagan of looks like and what Artagan is doing is Not That.

Also Caleb recognizes that Jester was a lonely girl who made a fey friend. Isn't that what he did with Frumpkin when he was scared and alone in the world? He sees so many facets of that relationship and that puts him in a unique position to trust Jester AND Artagan.

She loved him when she knew the worst of him, even though he was terrified she wouldn't, and that helped him want to be better, and if she could do that to HIM, who thought he was too far gone, then why couldn't she do it to someone like Artagan?

i can give more tailored advice if you hit me up on chat with more specifics on your background/interests.

given what you've written here, though, i'll just assume you don't have any immediate professional aspirations (e.g. you just want to learn some things, and you aren't necessarily trying to get A Cyber Security Job TM within the next three months or w/e), and that you don't know much about any specific programming/computering domain yet.

(stuff under cut because long)

first i'd probably just try to pick some interesting problem that you think you can solve with tech. this doesn't need to be a "hacking" project at first; i was just messing around with computers for ages before i did anything involving security/exploitation.

if you don't already know how to program, you should ideally pick a problem you can solve via programming. for instance: i learned a lot back in the 2000s, when play-by-post forum RPGs were in vogue.  see, i'd already been messing around, building my own personal sites, first just with HTML & CSS, and later on with Javascript and PHP.   and i knew the forum software everyone used (InvisionPowerBoard) was written in PHP.  so when one of the admins at my RPG complained that they'd like the ability to set multiple profile pictures, i was like, "hey i'm good at programming, want me to create a mod to do that," and then i just... did. so then they asked me to program more features, and i got all the sexy nerd cred for being Forum Mod Queen, and it was a good time, i learned a lot.

(i also got to be the person who was frantically IMed at 2am because wtf the forum is down and there's an inscrutable error, what do??? basically sysadmining! also, much less sexy! still, i learned a lot!)

the key thing is that it's gotta be a problem that's interesting to you: as much as i love making dorky sites in PHP, half the fun was seeing other people using my stuff, and i think the era of forum-based RPGs has passed. but maybe you can apply some programming talents to something that you are interested in—maybe you want to make a silly Chrome extension to make people laugh, a la Cloud to Butt, or maybe you'd like to make a program that converts pixel art into cross-stitching patterns, maybe you want to just make a cool adventure game on those annoying graphing calculators they make you use in class, or make a script for some online game you play, or make something silly with Arduino (i once made a trash can that rolled toward me when i clapped my hands; it was fun, and way easier than you'd think!), whatever.

i know a lot of hacker-types who got their start doing ROM hacking for video games—replacing the character art or animations or whatever in old NES games. that's probably more relevant than the PHP websites, at least, and is probably a solid place to get started; in my experience those communities tend to be reasonably friendly to questions. pick a small thing you want to do & ask how to do it.

also, a somewhat unconventional path, but—once i knew how to program a bit of Python, i started doing goofy junk, like, "hey can i implemented NamedTuple from scratch,” which tends to lead to Python metaprogramming, which leads to surprising shit like "oh, stack frames are literally just Python objects and you can manually edit them in the interpreter to do deliberately horrendous/silly things, my god this language allows too much reflection and i'm having too much fun"... since Python is a lot of folks' first language these days, i thought i'd point that out, since i think this is a pretty accessible start to thinking about How Programs Actually Work under the hood. allison kaptur has some specific recommendations on how to poke around, if you wanna go that route.

it's reasonably likely you'll end up doing something "hackery" in the natural course of just working on stuff. for instance, while i was working on the IPB forum software mods, i became distressed to learn that everyone was using an INSECURE version of the software! no one was patching their shit!! i yelled at the admins about it, and they were like "well we haven't been hacked yet so it's not a problem," so i uh, decided to demonstrate a proof of concept? i downloaded some sketchy perl script, kicked it until it worked, logged in as the admins, and shitposted a bit before i logged out, y'know, to prove my point.

(they responded by banning me for two weeks, and did not patch their software. which, y'know, rip to them; they got hacked by an unrelated Turkish group two months later, and those dudes just straight-up deleted the whole website. i was a merciful god by comparison!)

anyway, even though downloading a perl script and just pointing it at a website isn't really "hacking" (it's the literal definition of script kiddie, heh)—the point is i was just experimenting a lot and trying a lot of stuff, which meant i was getting comfortable with thinking of software as not just some immutable relic, but something you can touch and prod in unexpected ways.

this dovetails into the next thing, which is like, just learn a lot of stuff. a boring conventional computer science degree will teach you a lot (provided you take it seriously and actually try to learn shit); alternatively, just taking the same classes as a boring conventional computer science degree, via edX or whatever free online thingy, will also teach you a lot. ("contributing to open source" also teaches you a lot but... hngh... is a whole can of worms; send a follow-up ask if you want that rant.)

here's where i should note that "hacking" is an impossibly broad category: the kind of person who knows how to fuck with website authentication tokens is very different than someone who writes a fuzzer, who is often quite different than someone who looks at the bug a fuzzer produces and actually writes a program that can exploit that bug... so what you focus on depends on what you're interested in. i imagine classes with names like "compilers," "operating systems," and "networking" will teach you a lot. but, like, idk, all knowledge is god-breathed and good for teaching. hell, i hear some universities these days have actual computer security classes? that's probably a good thing to look at, just to get a sense of what's out there, if you already know how to program.

also be comfortable with not knowing everything, but also, learn as you go. the bulk of my security knowledge came when i got kinda airdropped into a work team that basically hired me entirely on "potential" (lmao), and uh, prior to joining i only had the faintest idea what a hypervisor was? or the whole protection ring concept? or ioctls or sandboxing or threat models or, fuck, anything? i mostly just pestered people with like 800 questions and slowly built up a knowledge base, and remember being surprised & delighted when i went to a security conference a year later and could follow most of the talks, and when i wound up at a bar with a guy on the xbox security team and we compared our security models a bunch, and so on.  there wasn't a magic moment when i "got it", i was just like, "okay huh this dude says he found a ring-0 exploit... what does that mean... okay i think i got that... why is that a big deal though... better ask somebody.." (also: reading an occasional dead tree book is a good idea. i owe my firstborn to Robert Love's Linux Kernel Development, as outdated as it is, and also O'Reilly's kookaburra book gave me a great overview of web programming back in the day, etc.  you can learn a lot by just clicking around random blogs, but you’ll often end up with a lot of random little facts and no good mental scaffolding for holding it together; often, a decent book will give you that scaffolding.)

(also, it's pretty useful if you can find a knowledgable someone to pepper with random questions as you go. finding someone who will actively mentor you is tricky, but most working computery folks are happy to tell you things like "what you're doing is actually impossible, here's why," or "here's a tutorial someone told me was good for learning how to write a linux kernel module," or "here's my vague understanding of this concept you know nothing about," or "here's how you automate something to click on a link on a webpage," which tends to be handier than just google on its own.)

if you're reading this and you're like "ok cool but where's the part where i'm handed a computer and i gotta break in while going all hacker typer”—that's not the bulk of the work, alas! like, for sure, we do have fun pranking each other by trying dumb ways of stealing each other's passwords or whatever (once i stuck a keylogger in a dude's keyboard, fun times). but a lot of my security jobs have involved stuff like, "stare at this disassembly a long fuckin' time to figure out how the program pointer got all fucked up," or, "write a fuzzer that feeds a lot of randomized input to some C++ program, watch the program crash because C++ is a horrible language for writing software, go fix all the bugs," or "think Really Hard TM about all the settings and doohickeys this OS/GPU/whatever has, think about all the awful things someone could do with it, threat model and sandbox accordingly." occasionally i have done cool proof-of-concept hacks but honestly writing exploits can kinda be tedious, lol, so like, i'm only doing that if it's the only way i can get people to believe that Yes This Is Actually A Problem, Fix Your Code

"lua that's cool and all but i wanted, like, actual links and recommendations and stuff" okay, fair. here's some ideas:

microcorruption: very fun embedded security CTF; teaches you everything you need to know as you're doing it.

cryptopals crypto challenges: very fun little programming exercises that teach you a lot of fundamental cryptography concepts as you're going along! you can do these even as a bit of a n00b; i did them in Python for the lulz

the binary bomb lab is hilariously copied by, like, so many CS programs, lol, but for good reason. it's accessible and fun and is the first time most people get to feel like a real hacker! (requires you know a bit of C beforehand)

ctftime is a good way to see when new CTFs ("capture the flag"s; security-focused competitions) are coming up. or, sometimes CTFs post their source code, so you can continue trying them after the CTF is over. i liked Stripe's CTFs when they were going, because they focused on "web stuff", and "web stuff" was all i really knew at the time. if you're more interested in staring at disassembly, there's CTFs focused on that sort of thing too.

also, like, lots of good talks out there; just watching defcon/cansecwest/etc talks until something piques your interest is very fun. i'd die on a battlefield for any of Christopher Domas's talks, but he assumes a lot of specific x86/OS knowledge, lol, so maybe don’t start with that. oh, Julia Evans's blog is honestly probably pretty good for just learning a lot of stuff and really beginner-friendly?

oh and wrt legality... idk, i haven't addressed it here since it hasn't come up in my own work much, tbh. if you're just getting started you're kind of unlikely to Break The Law without, y'know, realizing maybe you're doing something a bit gray-area? and you can cross that bridge when you come to it? Real Hacking TM is way more of a pain-in-the-ass than doing CTFs and such, and you'll learn way more with the latter, so who cares lol just do the fun thing
