Azula in Fandom
I really did love Azula. She's one of the most fascinating characters in ATLA: brilliant, terrifying, powerful, tragic, and deeply flawed. I loved that the show let her be complicated without ever pretending she wasn’t dangerous.
And I still love her, but honestly, some parts of the fandom have made it harder. Watching people erase her harm, excuse everything she did, or attack others for acknowledging her complexity doesn’t make her look better, it just makes real conversations about her impossible. Azula was compelling because she was broken, cruel, vulnerable, and human all at once.
Flattening her into a untouchable girlboss or a misunderstood victim that just wanted the best doesn't honor that story, it kinda cheapens it.
I’m still rooting for her character, and I always will be. But if I'm honest, it feels like my love for her has faded a little, not because of who she is, but because of how some of her fans behave (NOT ALL FANS, by no means all fans, but a loud enough *few* who excuse abuse, downplay harm, and treat disagreements about her online like I just killed their puppy in front of their eyes).
It's just kinda sad seeing something I cared about get twisted into something uglier  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day 47
Today’s board is:
Tumblr media
It’s been so long since we’ve had a Giggles board!! Here she is, quite well rested.
(From TV episode 12A I’ve Got You Under my Skin)
#htf#happy tree friends#htf giggles#forgive me if I’m wrong but I think the last time she was posted was on Valentine’s Day???#that’s like 20 days ago golly#im sorry giggles you don’t deserve such treatment <//33#you are sincerely just a girl#Ya know I’ve never personally seen any giggles hate#but like I’ve seen other folks talk about it and like I feel like the whole idea of her being a cheating bitch is stupid#cus like??? Do you not realize how incredibly episodic this series is???#like even if we ignore the fact that these critters are constantly dying and getting mortally wounded each episode#Everything about the show is so inconsistent like obviously the intention is not that Giggles is cheating on her like ‘’canon’’ partner#The crew is just pairing their most flexible (post TV) girl character with whoever works best for the episode/short <33#There ya go mini rant on the hypothetical giggles haters#honestly I don’t think I 100% hate any of the critters#and there’s only really one that I actively dislike and I really don’t talk about how I don’t like em publicly#(my friends get to hear all about it tho lol)#I don’t like being too negative on here because like. Everyone has their own opinions! And just cus somethin doesn’t fit my tastes#doesn’t mean it doesn’t have fans. And I’d feel real bad if I’m just ranting and raving about someone’s favoritest lil guy!#that’s why I just like. Jokingly dunk on stuff for the most part#this includes the ants like I don’t think there’s any hardcore ants fans but like. I want the hypothetical ants fans to know I don’t hate e#like /genuinely they are just stupid cartoon ants#wowza that was a long ramble!!#ya can tell I took the time to schedule this one huh??

Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s all.. (except the tags lol)
#caution yap ahead#teen titans comics#bart allen#a year and a half in complete isolation just reading and reading because SOME PEOPLE in your life who are SUPPOSED to be family#made you feel utterly useless and your friends going through teen angst and relationships and secrets aren’t helping#so you force yourself into isolation to ‘catch up’ with the rest of the crowd because ‘you gotta grow up sometime too’#you’ve heard everyone say it all your life but after getting your knee blown up and then got surgery to fix it in a law breaking#no pain killers procedure where your biggest fear was dissappointing your family and not about the mass pain you were in#so you decided right after it was done to walk right to the library sit down and just read.. for a year and a half. alone. all to prove#yourself and to make those around you less annoyed with you#this is a comic Wally diss#I guess I just wish they showed us the emotional repercussions of this#the surgery was bad enough but to spend that long alone right after being in so much pain is devastating#they did mention his knee bothering him after these issues dropped so they get points for not completely forgetting it#and he was dropping all the facts after this so they weren’t completely forgetting it happened#I’m just curious why they left the isolation part out#not to mention he’s just moved states and his father figure is missing and he can’t do anything about that fact#and yeah I guess it was cool of teen titans to prove in cannon that Bart is smartTM#especially to a wider audience since more people were reading ttv3 rather than impulse 95#I wonder why he took on the kid flash costume and moniker though.. I mean he could’ve stayed as impulse and it wouldn’t change anything#it wasn’t a progression through his family legacy either because we’ve seen him be prepared to go from impulse right to flash#multiple times too#I think Geoff just hated impulse and changed him to kid flash because it fit the titans mold better..#which is RIDICULOUS because Bart was a titan before even his solo series began during new titans

━━★. *・。゚ "So, were you and Nine-Fingers, like..... a thing....?"
Tumblr media
The long-winded ( and yet still somehow just scratching the surface??? ) explanation of Iago's time in the guild and their relationship with guild leader Nine-Fingers Keene.
Iago and Nine-Fingers Keene met when they were teenagers. I won't go into the details of the meet-cute, but they were trying to break into the same house and both left with a pocket full of valuables and a black eye for Iago.
Eventually, Iago found out who this person was and involved themselves in the growing Guild. They were a great contact to have, after all - They excelled at gathering secrets and information and had little to no problem sharing for a good enough price. A sort of partnership budded between Iago and the leader. A partnership that became something like an entertaining companionship. They were still both young and horribly bogged with responsibility - they could laugh around each other. That meant more to them than either of them realized.
They only officially joined the Guild once Puck was allowed to- he made a great hit man. The urges the twins didn't yet have an understanding of had only grown worse, more violent as each day passed. Iago knew they couldn't control their brother, and they knew these thoughts and actions were not his own, but they were out of ideas to help him. They hoped redirecting him could help. It would keep them safer, they thought despite the guilt and chill already creeping into their heart, if they weren't his only target, He made a great ( albeit often overly-enthusiastic ) assassin. Iago was labeled his handler. They worked as an information broker, mostly, with the occasional espionage or thievery as it was called for.
Nine-Fingers ( or Astele, as Iago had begun calling her as of late ) and the Darlingtons saw each other more and more often once this official allegiance began. The Guild offered the twins stability, something they hasn't had in a very long time. Astele gave Iago companionship, something they hadn't even thought possible outside of Puck.
Iago's first instinct upon realizing their developing feelings was to ensure things remained that way for their own security. They indulged in the companionship, used it to secure a place in the Guild for them and their brother where they could have a roof over their head and food on their plates without fighting tooth and nail and blood and bone.
Whether Astele knew she was being used or not didn't matter for long - Iago eventually fell for her just the same. She still made them laugh. She still treated them with the casual kindness they had been lacking for years. Whatever plans Iago had were often dashed by the very real feelings for the Guild leader they found themselves plagued by.
Astele was the first person outside of their family that Iago might've loved.
The nature of the relationship was never quite spelled out, but they both understood well enough what late night conversations and kisses and a head tucked against Astele's chest meant.
Puck did not like Nine-Fingers. He did not like the Guild. The measured killings did not appease him ( or the thing that seemed to grow inside of him, hungrier every second ). The rules and structure only alienated him more than the streets ever did. Iago needed the stability to pretend they were normal and safe again. To Puck, it was but a spotlight on all that was wrong with him.
Nine-Fingers was right in the middle of all that disdain. His protectiveness over Iago was something akin to an animal protecting its prey - another thing that had gotten worse over the years that the twins were unable to explain or resist.
Nine-Fingers, in return, had no affection for the other Darlington. She saw Puck as generally barbaric and, on Iago's behalf, an unhealthy influence at best, a parasite at worst. Iago's attempts to convey his gentler sides, the heart of their baby brother that they knew was still there, fell on deaf ears. She saw firsthand the desperation with which Iago clung to him despite being so obviously scared of him. It wasn't healthy. It wasn't right.
Their relationship, whatever it was, started to crumble around this conflict. Iago started to clam up and distance themselves from the very moment Astele brought it up. They refused to entertain any conversation on the matter, and it became clear how much they simply chose to ignore or kick under the rug.
Puck got worse. There was collateral and enthusiasm in each job he performed that made his motivations questionable to say the least. He didn't seem to mind much what the assignments were after a while - the job would be done as he so wished for it to be. A voice spoke to him at night and told him this was right, he was better than this, he was destined for something more and this, all of this, was holding him back.
Iago got worse too. They could hear a voice of their own, like a countdown, urging them to stop trying so hard, to give up, lay down, die, this was never going to last. It made them all the more paranoid and afraid. And all the more desperate to cover the tracks of their brother's misuse of position and hold on to the one thing they could manage. They were good at their job. It really was the only thing they were good at. So often that voice reminded them of what little else they could do right.
They were both still so young. Of course they listened.
Astele watched this like a wreck in slow motion. She couldn't do much of any real note. Iago wouldn't listen to her. They already knew the truth of what was happening, but they wouldn't hear it from someone else.
Puck killed five members of the Guild. Iago tried, gods, they tried, to cover his tracks and reframe the deaths of people they almost could've considered friends. They tried to protect him, but he didn't want that. Not when he never cared much for belonging the Guild in the first place ( that was Iago's pitiful pipe dream ). He was no longer welcome to the guildhall. It's a miracle ( and due in part to Iago's pleading ) that he was allowed to leave at all without retaliation or, more accurately, a trail of bloodshed from those who would dare try to stop him.
Astele told Iago he would be the death of them. They knew this, of course they knew this, but what could they do? Leave him?
"Well, yes."
Things got worse. Iago still worked for the Guild, though a bit more quietly, away from those who would consider their presence now unwelcome after their attempts at covering up the murder of their fellow members. The days of Iago feeling safe and belonging were gone- if they had ever really been more than just a hopeful delusion in the first place. Astele looked at them in frustration or pity more than anything else in those days.
On their 18th birthday, Iago and Puck were taken to the Bhaal Temple without the chance to say so much as goodbye. But that is a wretched story for another day.
Iago did not see or write a single word to Astele again for months. When they finally spared her a visit, the light in their eyes had gone out completely. They were worse than she had ever seen them. Defeat and despair dragged them down with every step, and yet they kept their feet moving like a corpse unwilling to stay at rest. They only find her again to apologize for the departure and to say an official goodbye. Their life had become something else. They couldn't imagine they'd be able to ever return to how things were.
Astele offered protection from the Guild. Iago didn't even bother arguing that she'd have her work cut out for her protecting them from the God that was quite literally in their blood. They didn't tell her where they had gone. They insisted it didn't matter, since there was no other choice anyway.
Iago didn't realize at the time that their goodbye wouldn't last forever. They would see her again. Months or sometimes over a year would pass, but they'd visit her again after each goodbye that they swear to themselves will be the last one. Again and again, they'd show up, never with any improvements, never answering questions. A few times, they tried to pretend nothing had changed. They'd force laughter at old jokes and embrace and try to forget where they would be returning to once they left her again. Sometimes, they'd show up half-alive, pumped full of healing potions while they managed a shaky "long time, no see" just to see her roll her eyes the way she did. Other times, they'd visit just to sit with her in dead silence and stare vacantly at a wall for a few hours before leaving again without any notion of when they might return. Occasionally, they'd leave letters.
What they had was no romantic relationship. Though it lacked a name in the first place, whatever it was had been long since dead, dragged out and worn thin by Iago's poor attempts to hold onto something long after it lost all chance ( they have a habit of this, have you noticed? ).
Nine-Fingers had to watch all of the life drain out of someone she once might have loved and was powerless to help - Iago would always pick their brother. Over her, over themselves. Every time. There was nothing she could do to save them from this loyalty. Pity and exasperation and resentment all settled in place of where their love used to be. She cared about Iago, sure, probably for a while, but one can only handle so much of a stubborn corpse that lets itself rot away.
It's been around two years since they last spoke when Iago and Nine-Fingers reunite during the events of Baldur's Gate 3. Considering Iago as a companion, how that mess pans out is up to your choices of addressing the obvious tension.

this convo hitting so different if ur a lolth drow like minthara
Tumblr media
#ntm shri'iia's initial fear at the start (and what lead her to eventually break her oath (accidentally!!)) was her getting hatecrimed#bc she's a drow. bc she's been told how much the surfacers hate her kind and how they are the Enemy#like if surfacers are scared and wary of lolth drows bc of what they do up there i think they'd be scared and wary of surfacers too bc of#what they've been made to believe in. and the fact that kindness or anything Good generally does not Exist or is very scarce in their#society so getting treated better is something that doesn't come to mind (more so for shri'iia bc she was raised in the Braeryn where#the drow nobles go down there to terrorize the poor people. like i dont think she had that luxury or chance to experience goodwill UNTIL sh#was dropped off in the surface and was given the benefit of the doubt -> which is more than what she expected or what she was given before#but anyway that convo where minty says they begin to see you in the same light probably ‼️‼️ alarmed her#bc i think she's only starting to become comfortable and safe around other people. like this is early act 3 shri'iia too#it does take her a long time to get accustomed to other people and let her guard down. then minty says something like that and i think it'l#set her off. like she's gonna start getting paranoid again. then vampire abduction happens the next night she's like OUP.#takes the astral tadpole out of her own fear and paranoia bc she's had that belief that having power and strength will make her feel safe#(it does not.) it's the same reason why she took the tadpole in act 1 in the first place#since she takes it after breaking her oath and feeling like she's significantly weaker. shri'iia can't feel like she's lacking in anything#ever she needs that security net that she's strong enough or capable enough and she needs others to know that about herself too she's too#insecure. and i think having two instances where her paranoia gets ticked off will push her to take the astral tadpole. like its#really out of impulse. and i think part of her oathbreaker arc is her learning how to tame that paranoia too and just generally learning#how to feel comfortable and safe. but anyway. thats part of the reason why i like minty#to be the one who gets kidnapped hehe. second part is the toxic yuri of it all 🤤🤤🤤#shut up about bg3.

"The division between the two families [the Woodvilles and the Nevilles] and their allies can be seen in the royal charters that they witnessed. Warwick, Rivers and Archbishop Neville of York, while serving as chancellor and afterwards, were fairly constant witnesses to royal charters and consequently often appeared together. This was not, however, the case for other family members and friends. From 1466 to 1469, if Scales or Woodville associates like Sir John Fogge, John Lord Audley or Humphrey Lord Stafford of Southwick witnessed royal charters, then members of the Neville group, such as John Neville, earl of Northumberland, or John Lord Wenlock would not, and vice versa. Discounting the ubiquitous Warwick, Rivers and Archbishop Neville, of the twenty-four charters issued between February 1466 and June 1469, twelve were witnessed by men associated with the Woodvilles, eight by men associated with the Nevilles and two were witnessed by no member of either group beyond the two earls at their heads and the archbishop; only two charters, both from 1466, featured associates of both families.
Such striking segregation of witnesses suggests that something more than simple convenience or availability was at play. [...] The evidence of these witness lists does show the extent of the split between the two groups from early in Edward's reign and of the need for political society to work with that cleavage in the heart of the Yorkist regime."
— Theron Westervelt, "Royal charter witness lists and the politics of the reign of Edward IV"
*This is specifically applicable for Edward IV's first reign; in contrast, the charters in his second reign displayed a great deal of aristocratic and domestic unity and cohesion.
#the woodvilles#edward iv#wars of the roses#richard neville 16th earl of warwick#my post#elizabeth woodville#Obviously I hate the idea of Elizabeth and her family being seen as a social-climbing invasive species who banished the old nobility and#drove Warwick/Richard into rebellion and dominated the government and controlled the king and were responsible for Everything Wrong Ever#but I also dislike the 'revisionist' idea that they were ACTUALLY just passive and powerless bystanders or pawns who kept to their#social “place” (whatever the fuck that means). Frankly speaking this is more of a diminishment than a realistic defense.#the 'Queen's kin' (as they were known at the time) were very visible at court and demonstrably influential and prominent in politics#and as this shows there DOES seem to have been a genuine division/conflict between them and the Nevilles during Edward's first reign#(which DID directly lead to the decline of Neville dominance in England though the maintained honored positions and influence of their own)#Especially since Edward's second reign was entirely void of any such divisions - instead the nobility were united and focused on the King#even Clarence and Gloucester's long and disruptive quarrel over the Warwick inheritance never visibly left its mark on charters#so the Woodville/Neville divide from the 1460s must have been very sharp and divisive indeed#And yes it's safe to say that Elizabeth Woodville was probably involved: whether in her own right or via support of her family - or both -#it's illogical to argue that she was uninvolved (even the supportive Croyland Chronicle writes that Edward was “too greatly influenced”#by her; she and her family worked together across the 1470s; she was the de-facto head in 1483; etc)#Enhanced by the fact that Elizabeth was the first Englishwoman to be crowned queen - meaning that the involvement of her#homeborn family marked the beginning of “a new and largely unprecedented factor in the English power structure” (Laynesmith)#This should be kept in mind when it comes to analyzing contemporary views of them and of Elizabeth's own anomalous position#HOWEVER understanding the complexity of the situation at hand doesn't mean accepting the traditionally vilified depiction of the Woodvilles#Warwick and the Nevilles remained empowered and (at least outwardly) respected by the regime#Whether he was driven by disagreements over foreign policy or jealousy or ambition - the decision to rebel was very much his own#Claiming that the Woodvilles were primarily responsible is ridiculous (and most of the nobility continued to support Edward regardless)#There's also the fact that Warwick took what was probably a basic factional divide and turned it into a misogynistic and classist narrative#of a transgressive “bad” woman who became queen through witchcraft and aggrandized a family of social-climbing “lessers” who replaced#the inherently more deserving old nobility and corrupted the realm - later revived and intensified by Richard III a decade later#ie: We can recognize their genuine division AND question the (false/unfair) problematic narrative around the Woodvilles. Nuance is the key.
