With how Rook stalks Leona and Vil (is it really stalking with Vil if Vil is very much aware and consents enough for rook to be in the open?) if both of them date Jamil, would he also be stalked?
He's already hyper aware of his surroundings so adding rook into the mix feels like he should just get more time to sleep.
Thank you SO MUCH for asking! Lemme introduce you to Vil/Rook/Leona shipping, the sheer potential of Rook-Jamil, and my Rook metamour theory!
First, I'm a big Vil/Rook/Leona shipper. I call Rook/Leona the Hunter/Hunted ship. Who's the hunter? Who's the hunted? Who knows. As @aria-faye (THE Rook connoisseur who made me love Rook too lol) said, they both come from the same place, have the same culture, and are both somewhat outsiders in their own way. Rook doesn't really fit the Sunset Savanah stereotype or the Savanaclaw mentality in full. Leona doesn't fit the ideal of a prince and gets ostracized by his own people. Both of them work really well as a ship with Vil and it makes this funny Pomefiore-to-Savanaclaw pipeline with Rook in the middle, having been in both dorms.
For Jamil, once more quoting V "I feel like Rook kind of already keeps an eye on Jamil, a bit. He watches things he finds beautiful, and Jamil is definitely beautiful." Plus there didn't seem to be any adverse reaction from Jamil toward Rook for the entirety of book 5. And Rook is so desperately honest and true to himself that it contrasts completely with Jamil who still struggles to find himself after a lifetime of lying. He'd be a good push for Jamil to be more honest too, a good influence.
In relation to the N2 squad, here's my answer : METAMOUR. I'm already polyshipping 24/7, it might not yet be completely obvious in my blog but I ship more OT3 than actual couples. I work better with 3+ characters relationships than regular couples. So since Vil, Leona, and Jamil are already dating, why couldn't I add Rook too? He's not part of the N2 squad, but he's such a constant shadow to Vil that it's hard to imagine them away from each other. Leona and Jamil would start dating him fully knowing Rook is there and not leaving. Really, Rook would probably be Vil's first boyfriend before Leona and Jamil become a thing.
That doesn't mean Leona and Jamil would necessarily start dating Rook though, and that's where the metamour happens. They all share Vil, but whether there is a relationship between Leona and Rook, or Jamil and Rook is up to... my mood, mostly xD Or reader's interpretation I guess. Maybe they just get comfortable simply sharing Vil, maybe they have a sort of queer platonic relationship, maybe they're all dating.
I tend to treat Rook as a bonus when it comes to N2, because he doesn't fit the group, but it's hard to imagine him away, and he's so stupidly supportive that he'd probably be a good influence on forever-depressed-Leona and desperately-confused-Jamil.
Tldr : Jamil and Leona would start dating Vil knowing Rook would be there anyway, so if they ever feel uncomfortable about it they can only blame themselves.
(Who'd you think held the camera in those illus?)
#look I'm a simple person#you give me love triangles or potential love interests and I mash them all together like puree#why should I chose when I can just have them all?#ask me anything#mello's drawings#twisted wonderland#twst#n2 squad#jamil viper#leona kingscholar#vil schoenheit#rook hunt#art#my art#leojami#leovil#javil#rookvil

*ੈ✩‧₊˚ kudos and enemies to lovers
type of post: fic characters: rook additional info: romantic, reader is gender neutral, reader is yuu, this is ooc I just thought it was funny, rook writing rpf is morally questionable I KNOW. he's a freak author's note: the fanfiction site is made up
"completely ooc. vil would never say this"
Rook Hunt has been staring at the anonymous comment for hours.
He's come back to it five times, taking breaks only to rest his eyes when the harsh glare of the computer screen becomes too much.
It's not so uncommon for him to fall for so little; in just seven words, this anonymous hate had captured his full attention like a rabbit in a snare.
His gloved finger brushes over the enter key.
What to say? How could he possibly express himself in only a few hundred characters, in the comment section under a fanfiction of fifty thousand?
How he wishes they commented from an account... not only could he DM them, he may also have some idea of who they are. What sort of person would know Vil Schoenheit better than him?
No one. That's who.
"Dear Reader: I am sorry to hear you did not like my writing. However, I am inclined to believe I know Vil Schoenheit a modest amount better than you. Merci. -R"
Rook smiles. Eloquent, graceful, but firm. A gentleman like him would never start a fight.
Only finish it.
His curiosity finally put to rest, he responds to the other comments, thanking his usual commenters in detail.
When he scrolls back up to the top, there's something new:
"I sincerely doubt that. and fyi, you couldn't beg vil to be friends with neige"
Ohoho. Those are fighting words, he thinks. A smile creeps across Rook. Well, if it's a fight they want...
"Dear Reader: You doubt it? And how so? -R"
He refreshes the page again and again, hoping for an answer each time. This is the most stimulation he's had all week.
Now, who could this mysterious commentor be? A jealous fan, perhaps? A bitter critic?
Then:
"I was sitting next to him not two hours ago and he'd never say that"
Rook's smile widens. Of course. He should have guessed. The typing quirks, the misspelled words, even the voice in which each comment is written...
Now, he has you right where he wants you.
"Naughty naughty, Prefect. Does our Roi du Poison know you frequent the Vil Schoenheit x reader tag? or have you been keeping secrets again~?"
This time, he doesn't refresh. He knows you won't respond. Rook gets up from his desk and leaves his dorm, knowing just where to find you at this hour, and...
"Bonsoir, Trickster," he lets himself in your room.
As expected, there you are, looking beautifully flustered and vulnerable with your Crowley-approved phone in hand.
His smile sharpens. "Beautiful night, non?"
"I can explain,"
"Ah-ah," he tuts, sitting at the edge of your bed. "Do not be ashamed. I'm not a tattletale... not when I don't have to be."
His voice has a dangerous edge to it, and you give him a suspicious look. "What do you want?"
Rook lets the silence drag on, making you more and more impatient, more nervous, as if he were about to ask for something dangerous.
"Rescind your comments and leave a kudos on my work,"
You blink.
"...That's it?"
"Oui," he says. "...Unless you had something else in mind?"
You sigh. Now it's your turn to drag out the silence.
"...Let me edit your next fic,"
And, subsequently, it's Rook's turn to be surprised. He hadn't been expecting that. How... bold.
He smiles.
"...Ah... a tempting offer, I admit. I am working on something new. Perhaps we should discuss it over dinner?"
You think... and then: "I'm free Friday,"
"Then Friday it will be," Rook says, standing from your bed.
"Until then, mon petit critique~"

Loving Spirits - Beholder AU- DC x DP (Tim X Danny)
The rest of the series
So Tim and Danny are at an impasse. Life was comfortable. But they weren't progressing.
It wasn't stale, no never. Every day Tim could only guess what was waiting for him when he got home. If Danny was distracted with his blueprints or pouring over star charts. He could be laughing over a mythology book.
Danny had a habit of redecorating, not that Tim minded. The apartment was kind of bare before. Now it felt like he walked into the wrong house everything he came back. Boho, retro-futurism, and maximalism. Each style blended haphazardly. Tim was just glad it wasn't black everywhere. He was cool to let Danny take over the space.
There was currently one little problem. Well, several but one was more glaring than the others. He didn't know how he managed this but Danny didn't know he was a Wayne. He knew who the Waynes were but he spent so much time focused on his job, school, and hobbies he didn't care about gossip. Add that no one could casually approach him without losing their nerves and no one could tell him.
This was working out great for Tim until-
"Tim...you know I've never met your family. You've met mine and I kinda want to know what I'm getting into." Danny half laughed as he moved his rook on the chess board.
Tim panicked. He could tell Danny he was an orphan so he had no family but Danny was dense, not stupid, and knew damn well that Tim had a family. How else would Tim vent about his brothers and praise what siblings he did like? (Duke and Cassandra)
But right now Danny knew that Tim got a great position at Wayne Industries due to nepotism and brains. He also knew that said position meant a lot of late nights and overwork due to how underprepared he was. The latter was a lie to cover up his Red Robin identity
All these things he could use to get at least some sympathy from Danny and only a few compliments.
Tim didn't like lying but it's expected. Who in this family liked lying about their secret identity besides Dick who probably gets off on that sort of thing deep down. Okay, so Tim liked having a secret identity too but that didn't mean he liked lying to Danny. Okay, he would totally be okay with lying if it was easier and had no consequences but there would totally be consequences on a long enough timeline just look at Bruce's relationships.
Well Tim had to bite the bullet this time.
"I don't know. My family can be so busy. And well... I had a bit of a fallout a few years ago with my brothers. I was practically abandoned. That's why I moved out. Sorry...I don't really talk about it. Family dinner night is the most I can stand."
Timothy Drake you absolute fucking coward! That's so cheap! You manipulative little shit!
"Oh...you poor thing. I didn't know it was like that. I promise I won't bring it up unless you want to talk about it." Danny frowned sympathetically bringing up a hand to cradle Tims cheek soothingly.
Like I said, you're a genius, Tim! Greatest plan you've ever come up with! Absolutely flawless!
***
Danny guessed that Tim side of the family won't be present at the wedding. That's okay but not ideal. That allows Danny to fill up the roles with his side. Youngblood was going to be the ring bearer. Clockwork is the officiate but did Tim want a specific denomination? Danny was sure he could ask any diety to show up for the ceremony.
There was so much planning for these events, years even if he didn't just elope.
Danny just felt bad that they were this deep into their relationship but its really Tim putting in so much effort.
Tim invited Danny into his nest of all things and they are sharing a space.
Nocturne was scandalized when he heard.
"But you're so young! Even Clockwork and I don't share our nests every night!" Nocturne said dramatically pulling out a fan and cooling himself like he heard that Danny was now a fallen woman in Victorian England.
He wasn't wrong though. Ghosts don't often share a nest. It's a sacred and off-limits place of their haunts. Even ancients like Clockwork and Nocturne whose original haunts have long since been lost to time (ehehe) had their own domains in the infinite realms and were careful about crossing into them carelessly so they don't muddle them.
Nests are charged with so much of your own energy, that letting them be tainted by another's energy was an uncomfortable idea. There was so much vulnerability in feeling exposed like that.
Thankfully, Tim hasn't asked them to share a room. Danny wasn't quite sure he could handle it without panicking.
Clockwork wasn't happy either witht he news.
"Moving into his nest is one thing. I respect the boldness but he hasn't even bonded with you." Clockwork was traditional at his heart but it all came from a good place. "When I claimed Nocturne as mine I at least -"
Danny nodded but tuned out the rest of the lecture.
"The future is now old man!" That was all Danny could think.
Seriously Danny was not listening. All he could hear were the butterflies in his stomach and sappy love songs.
But now Tim had proposed! That changed everything.
He asked Danny to stay by his side forever! It was a promise at that. There was nothing more binding. All they needed now was to make it official legally and get bonded.
But still, Danny would like to announce it to both their families. Although Danny hasn't told Vlad because he'd try to chase Tim off again. Seriously, ever since Danny "accidentally switched his original insane and corrupted Vlad for the alternate future non-ghost side redeemed Vlad he had been the ideal godfather. But the new Vlad was overbearing in his own way. How Dani survived is a mystery with a dad like that. Vlad was too ambitious right now and was discussing bringing Dan back to hopefully fix him. Vlad's ghost half made from his hate, anger, isolation, and obsession was to blame along with Danny's unresolved grief and fear of himself. That created Dan.
If the plan goes through Danny has to worry about more then just the wedding planning.
Danny already had so much on his plate. He needed to resolve the issue with the ecto pits soon. He had been getting complaints from the Infinite Realm residents. Being the high prince meant plumbing issues like this fall on him to resolve.
It's all so exhausting. But Danny can't help.but feel like he forgot something.
...Must not be important then.

I just started playing a Crow Rook and literally WHAT is going on between Rook & Viago. Why is he so worried about them, why does he care?? It’s not like they’re actually his kid or something…? Rook could probably even be his same age. & we know it’s not a romantic thing! Would love to know your thoughts on it. It’s giving me Hawke & Meeran for some reason lmao
i think they left this open to player headcanon in a way that i personally find delightful and entertaining. the incontrovertible canon facts are that he worries about them, that he is distinctly less bearable when they’re not around, that he has so much faith in them that he puts all their failures down to them being thoughtless or acting out on purpose, and that he expresses all of this via frustration when it’s clearly love. why and how we got to this point is up to you!
so i can only really talk about how i’ve been interpreting that. to Me, viago is so uptight and distrustful that i would struggle to believe in this dynamic if he hadn’t known rook for a really long time. which makes sense, because crows who belong to a house grow up together. i mentioned this way back when we first saw footage of him with rook de riva, but to me he talks to you a lot like an older family member who still kind of thinks of you as a kid. i read into it as him acting sort of like the equivalent of an older brother with a big like 5 or 10 year age gap, but that is obviously dependent on your rook’s age and feelings
i am going to delve into closely-canon-based headcanon territory for a moment but show my workings as i do it. viago is not from a crow family like lucanis. he is not related to whoever was his predecessor as house de riva’s guildmaster. he is a royal bastard who elected to join the crows rather than be exiled, because that is, for some fucking reason, the system they have in place. since his memories prior to the crows are distant boyhood ones, and the crows typically start training early, i think we can guess that he was at most a teenager when he joined the house
please take a moment to picture lanky teenage viago de riva, with all his distrust and temper, accustomed until now to certain noble comforts, terrible at making friends, inclined less towards physical strength and more towards poisons and the fantasy equivalent of excel spreedsheets. does anyone honestly think for a second that when this kid arrived, all house de riva’s scrappy cutthroat embittered crow recruits didn’t immediately smell blood in the water? does anyone honestly think he would have had a good fun time or been well-liked? that he eventually rose to talon by asking nicely or indeed anything other than his ability to cultivate fear as the foremost poisoner in the entire antivan crows? does anyone, for that matter, believe that every crow knows how good at poisoning viago de riva is because his afaik unmentioned predecessor died of super 100% natural causes?
and if rook de riva grew up with viago—which as i said, makes sense!—that would mean they were there. if they’re close enough now to, despite everything they did, have no fear of their talon and for him to be completely incapable of anything harsher than calling them an idiot, isn’t it reasonable to assume they must have been, then, the one person he had? the person who chose and kept choosing to stand by him during all that, when he was the easiest target in the house and it was still a very foolish gamble to make. young and impulsive, sure, but who else would have backed him? young and impulsive, but also so brilliant and determined that he firmly believes there’s no dragon they couldn’t chase away. if we accept all those workings, isn’t the question less why does he love them, and more: how could he not?

The Queen Rises Again, a For Tuna End
Part One Part Two Part Three Choose another ending
You hadn't seen much of Vil, recently. And anytime you went to visit him in Pomefiore, he was always “busy” and refused to even open his door to you.
At first you had been frustrated, but you were starting to get worried. Rook and Epel had assured you everything was fine, Vil was just going through a phase of sorts, but that didn't ease your anxiety. For seven's sakes, what kind of “phase” could Vil Schoenheit be in?
It was on another evening that had you ruminating on this idea, that Grim sighed heavily next to you.
“Oh, Grimmy, when did you get in?”
He stared at you for a moment, before scowling. I've been sitting here, sighing heavily, for ten minutes.”
“Oh, sorry bud. What's wrong?”
“Oh, it's nothing.”
You stifled a groan. No one saying what was wrong with Vil was already weighing on you, the last thing you needed was another person to not tell you what was wrong. You weren't good at the guessing games.
“Grim, if you don't tell me, I won't know how to help you.”
“Don't get snippy with me! I'm in distrust!”
“Distress?”
“Exactly!”
He pouted, and crossed his tiny kitty arms, turning away from you with a “hmph”.
You steadied yourself, and forced a calm tone, gently scratching behind Grim's ears.
“What's wrong, bubbas?”
Grim sighed forlornly. “I've just been…thinking.”
You very much doubted that. That was the joke you'd have made if he wasn't so forlorn.
“About what?”
"About how I can't be everything you need.”
“Sorry?” You fought back a confused laugh.
“Look, I am the Great Grim! I bring joy and color to your life as the beloved roommate/son that you always longed for! But even I can't be everything a human needs…”
You quirked an eyebrow, and he scowled. “I can't give you romance. What I'm implying is that you're gonna die alone.”
“Ouch. Thanks Grim. Definitely could have said that nicer. But isn't the next thing you're supposed to say, “but you don't have to worry about being alone because I'll always be there for you?””
Grim looked at you like you were crazy. “My wife and ten children will be taking up all of my time.”
“Sure Grimmy. But I'm a big kid, I can take care of myself…”
“Sure, sure, I totally believe you. But what if…” he hesitated. “What if I had someone, who I knew was very in love with you, and was positive he could take care of you?”
You choked. “Sorry?”
“He's mad for you, and I know if you asked him out, he'd say yes!”
“Lord, who would have a crush on me?”
Grim rolled his eyes, and muttered, “it's more likely than you think. Anyway!”
He pushed himself into your lap, cupping your cheeks. “Please Y/N. I'm worried about you, and I need to know that when I'm not with you, you will be okay.”
Your instinct was to say no. But when you looked into his eyes, he looked so sad and earnest, that you released a reluctant sigh, and agreed.
….
“Kay Grimmy, how do I look?”
He looked at the spot you were standing on the steps, and glared.
“Absolutely not. I told you this was a high fashion date.”
“Well, sorry, but this is all the high fashion I have! In case you forgot, we had to spend our entire monthly allowance to pay for a cleaning crew in the lab.”
“It'll have to do,” he sighed wistfully.
You heard a light knock on the door.
“He's here!” He scampered to the door, before looking back at you. “At least get a coat so he can't see the outfit.”
“If he likes me as much as you swear he does, it won't matter.”
Grim rolled his eyes and opened the door, to reveal…
….
Maybe it was just that you hadn't seen him in a long time, but something was different about the way Vil looked.
“Apple blossom, if you keep staring, I'll get self conscious,” he mused as he delicately rolled some pasta on his fork. Your cheeks burned, and you looked down at your plate.
“I've just been worried about you, that's all.”
“I'm grateful for your concern,” he reached across the table and squeezed your hand, making your heart flutter.
“Have you started a new skin care routine? Your skin seems like it's glowing!” You quickly changed the subject.
“You have a sharp eye! I've been trying some new products, and I think it looks rather good.”
“Yeah…wait! I know what's different!” You sat up straight. “Your hair looks darker!”
He froze. “I don't think so…”
“It definitely looks a shade darker-”
“How about we split a slice of cake for dessert!” He said in a voice louder than you expected, but you nodded.
….
“Would you join me for a moment longer? I need to pick up something at Octavinelle.”
“Yeah, sure.”
He placed your hand in the crook of his arm, and escorted you to the lounge. As you entered, Floyd, Jade, and Azul all looked up, various looks of irritation and shock on their faces.
“Wait here,” Vil whispered into your ear, and you gave him a nod as he walked over to Azul, who looked positively vexed. You watched him sigh heavily, then walk with Vil to the VIP room.
“So you and betta fish, huh?” A bitter voice asked in your ear, and you nearly jumped out of your skin. The last time your eyes had been on the twins, they had been across the room. And now they were here.
“Uh, yeah.”
“Was it a pleasant evening?”
“You know what? Yeah, actually,” you said with a smile. Maybe it was that you'd been so worried about Vil, and now you'd finally gotten to see her was okay, but you had a great date. You hated to admit that Grim of all people would set you up with someone you enjoyed, and could sort of see a future with, but then again, he knew you better than anyone. Why wouldn't he put thought and effort into finding someone he knew you would love?
“Damn, really? Ugh,” Floyd groaned, slumping against you, nearly causing you to topple over.
“What Floyd means to say, is that if you ever feel he doesn't live up to expectations, or he ever steps out of line, please feel free to discuss it with us,” Jade said with a smile.
“Please, please, please tell us if that happens,” Floyd had buried himself into the crook of your neck, and was now squeezing you tightly.
“I got what I'm here for,” Vil's voice called to you, as he not so elegantly yanked Floyd off of you. With Floyd apart from you, he took your hands in his, and then leaned in and pressed a kiss to your cheek. Over his shoulder, you watched Azul waltz back into the VIP room, and slam the door behind him, with an echoing thud.
“You ready to go, Apple blossom?” Vil asked as though he hadn't just completely reset your brain. You nodded dumbly, and he escorted you out. Over your shoulder, you thought you heard a growl from the twins.
But you couldn't think much about that as you got intoxicated by Vil's warmth and perfume.

Neve: Turns out you can smile. A real one, even. And more than once. Lucanis: Of course I can... (Sighs) I'm guessing there's a point to your observations? Neve: Only that Rook's good for you. Rook: Straight to the point. Lucanis: She's right, though. Neve: See? Now, isn't that sweet?
Awwwwwwww.
Y'know, one thing I really like about Lucanis's romance is that he never denies his feelings for Rook or tries to act like there isn't any sort of relationship there or even gets embarrassed about it. With this sort of broody character whose romance is moving pretty slow (I'm at the end of act 2 and haven't gotten a single kiss or "I love you" or any sort of explicit verbal discussion of his and Rook's shared feelings, I'm loving the slow burn but if you want to do a Lucanismance you should know going in that it is definitely a slow burn) you'd kind of expect that sort of thing (I was expecting him to get flustered in romance banter if nothing else), but no! Lucanis is very open about his feelings! He and Rook haven't put a name to what's between them or discussed what they want from this relationship, but Lucanis consistently is very quick to acknowledge that yes, there is something there and he does care very deeply for Rook. Even when he's being teased he doesn't get embarrassed or try to avoid it; Rook is good for him and they do make him incredibly happy and he's not at all embarrassed or awkward when the subject comes up. My favourite thing about this particular example is that Lucanis is the one being teased but it's Rook who gets a little flustered by it, it's just so delightful to me how Lucanis refuses to be anything other than happy about this relationship.

I read ur twst chars analises a lot,n I just wanna say I really love how u write em!!! I like ur nuanced interpretation, how they r very detailed, thoughtful, n objective, even tho its not about ur favs or even ones u dislike, also made me realize how good twst writing can be. So if I may ask, which of the cast do u think is the/one of the best written char(s) in the game?? N vice versa if u may, like ones u think need improvement :^]
[Analysis masterlist here! I believe it’s currently full so I’m working on putting together a second one :>]
First of all, thank you very much for enjoying my analyses ^^ I try very hard to research and to put myself in the shoes of each character I’m writing about, and I’m glad that it seems to show in my writing.
If we’re talking about the main 22 NRC students + Grim… (I’m not counting blank slate Yuu, NRC staff, Halloween characters, RSA students, and NPCs because they have such limited lore + vignettes and I feel it wouldn’t be fair to compare.) Honestly, I feel like they’re all written pretty decently, with perhaps the caveat being that there’s more content weighted toward the OB boys due to their significance in the main story and irl marketing. Some other characters, like Jade and Rook, are purposefully more mysterious as part of their characters.
I guess if I had to point out some weaker characters, I’d say they’d be Jack and Epel? I feel like those two are pretty… one note… 😔 What do we know about Jack? He’s strong, loyal, likes to exercise, is disciplined, is a tsundere… What do we know about Epel? He wants to be cool and not cute, he YEEHAWS, he likes apples, he’s really close with his family… You can see this reflected in the core of Epel’s dream; he wants to be tall and muscular, which is very simple when put next to the other dreams.
Of the two, Epel is worse off because he actually had a character arc in book 5 where he begins to accept that beauty and femininity can be a strength and isn’t something to be ashamed of. However, almost ALL the vignettes and side content outside of the main story have Epel exclusively talking about how tough and cool he wants to be + rejecting cute/girly things, which sort of negates the main story development and feels like he has regressed so much. I get that maybe he wouldn’t change his mind right away or do a 180, but it still creates a strong whiplash. Jack is at least consistent. Sort of stale, but consistent.
Those two aren’t flat or anything, but it feels like they hinge on the same handful of traits in every appearance and whenever we learn anything new about them, it’s just the same thing we already knew before but said slightly differently. I’d like to know more about Jack and Epel outside of these areas.
P.S. SORRY TO THE JACK AND EPEL STANS IN My AUDIENCE OTL

Thank you @roomwithanopenfire, @rimeswithpurple, @blackberrysummerblog, @nausikaaa, @larkral,
@hushed-chorus, @alexalexinii, @monbons, @whatevertheweather, @run-for-chamo-miles,
@artsyunderstudy, @mooncello, @brilla-brilla-estrellita, @forabeatofadrum, and @aristocratic-otter for the tags over the past few weeks. I've had a crazy month (90% in crazy a good way) and too frazzled to come up with my own WIP posts, but have enjoyed reading yours and being included.
Here are six ten moody little sentence from Chapter 11 of Basil Pitch's Diary. (In case you missed it, I posted Ch. 10, September, a few weeks ago, then fled the country.) Baz is hanging in in Niall and Dev's room:
The last time I was here with Niall, he’d told me to hold out for more than ear scritches and the occasional carrot. Now we sat on his bed with a chessboard between us. “Baz,” Niall said quietly. “What are you doing?” “Beating you.” I moved my queen to menace his remaining bishop. “With Snow, I mean.” Niall did that thing where the rook and king hop around, which shouldn’t be allowed, and I realized he’d won. Again. Somewhere, in a parallel universe, there is a me who grew up with someone to play against, demolishing a Niall who never went to math camp.
Below the cut: musing, a posting plan, and more tags.
Musing: I've actually written a ton since the last chapter even though I've been AWOL, but for a while no matter what I wrote, Baz felt out of character. I'd write a scene, like it, and then think "but why is he doing this?" Then I'd rewrite with Baz behaving completely differently, and that also felt OOC.
I worried that I'd somehow doomed myself with inconsistent characterization, but then I figured it out: Baz at this point is deeply inconsistent. He presents himself to the world one way, he tells the reader / himself that he's something else, and deep down he's a secret third thing. And sometimes his masks slip.
To some extent this is every unreliable narrator. But boyo has REALLY tangled himself up at this point. Something's gotta give. Until it does--which it will, soon--I have to be very clear in my mind, even if Baz isn't, about which Baz is driving the Baz at any given moment.
A lot of you can do that sort of thing intuitively. I can't. So I've been building this out (showing you just the headers b/c spoilers):
This might stultify some (most?) of you. For me, though, it's freeing. When my brain isn't trying to keep track of everything, my imagination can unfurl.
"'Everything'?" you ask. "This isn't that plotty a fic." It's not, but it's already 2.5x longer than anything else I've written, which means developing skills I haven't needed before. Anyway, my BPD chart and I are having fun. We're very happy together.
Posting Plan
I pushed myself to get Ch. 10 up before leaving home for three weeks, because Ch. 9 had ended on such a wretched note. While I was happy to have gotten it up, I didn't love the self-imposed time crunch (though betas @cutestkilla, @facewithoutheart, and @thewholelemon were fuckin' heroes). Feeling rushed had me stressing and second-guessing choices that were probably fine.
My plan now is to pause updates until I have at least a very rough first draft of the final chapter, then post it all at regular intervals. I know a longish pause means some folks who'd been reading along will wait until it's complete, if they return at all. To those folks--sorry, and I get it, and thank you for reading in the first place, and I love you.

Yuurivoice Characters And Listeners As Incorrect Quotes!
I already did this with Escaped Audios (sort of, it was mostly DennysVerse) but for these, the way the listeners respond will mostly be based off of my OCs for them (which I will make posts about eventually) PS, this is mostly Boo and Alphonse lol
~~
Alphonse: [Grabs Boo's ass while they're gettin groceries out of the car]
Boo: Excuse me thats my ass
Alphonse: That's our ass. We're married, bitch
~~
Finn: If I were a gardener, I'd put our tulips together.
Sunflower: Aww, babe. That's so sweet.
Alphonse: If I were a gardener, you'd be my hoe.
Boo: ... thanks
~~
Lucien: *stroking Angel’s hair* you're so tiny.
Angel: *sleepily* I could beat the shit out of you.
Lucien: *lovingly* | know.
Or
Alphonse: *stroking Boo’s hair* you're so tiny.
Boo: *sleepily* I could beat the shit out of you.
Alphonse: *lovingly* | know.
(It’s funny cuz my OC for Boo is 6’0, meanwhile, my OC for Angel is 5’3)
~~
Charlie: My boyfriend is too tall for me to kiss him on the lips. What should I do?
Boo: Punch him in the stomach. Then, when he doubles over in pain, kiss him.
Angel: Tackle him.
Star: Dump him.
Rook: Kick him in the shin.
Casper: NO TO ALL OF THOSE. JUST ASK ME TO LEAN DOWN.
(my Casper OC is 6’4 lol)
~~
Boo, making chicken and dumpling soup, dropping a dumpling on the floor: This is sadder than the time I almost died in College
Alphonse or Seth, choking on his coffee: Excuse me?
(rewrote this one a little bit)
~~ ⚠️ Slight NSFW ⚠️
Boo: I can’t eat this, its far too hot
Alphonse: You're far too hot yet I still manage
Room: Um-
Auron: WE'RE ON A DOUBLE DATE, I'M RIGHT HERE
~~ ⚠️ NSFW Again ⚠️
Boo: oh fuck me
Seth: yes please
Boo: what?
Seth: what?
Alphonse from the other room: HE SAID YES PLEASE!
~~
Alphonse: BOO! WHERE'S MY-
Sugarboo: By the door
Seth: Sugar! Do you know where the-
Sugarboo: In the kitchen
Charlie: Hey Sal (OC name), have you seen my stack of-
Sugarboo: On Seth's nightstand
Sugarboo: Independent my ass. You guys would fall apart without me
(Sal is my OC for Sugarboo)
~~ ⚠️ Slight NSFW ⚠️
Charlie: bro-
Casper: No, no, hold up, rewind.
Charlie: ...
Casper: My tongue was down your throat just a second ago, and now you're calling me bro??
~~ ⚠️you guessed it, NSFW ⚠️
Seth: What exactly do you think of me?
Sugarboo: Somewhere between "fuck you" and "I'd fuck you."
~~
Alphonse: I don't think | can mansplain, manipulate, or malewife our way out of it this time.
Boo: *cracks knuckles* Manslaughter it is.
Alphonse: What- no!
~~
Star: When Faust was born, the gods said, "He's too perfect for this world."
Auron: Please. When he was born, the devil said, "Oh, competition."
~~
Boo: I don't need to go to bed. I'm not tired, I'll be fine.
Alphonse: But, darling, I'll be so lonely without you. Come curl up in my arms so l can feel whole again.
Boo: O-oh. Well... Wait. Are you trying to seduce me into healthy sleeping patterns??
Alphonse: Is it working?
(this one could be vise versa)
~~
Alphonse, at some point: You speak RUSSIAN ?? Say something !!!
Boo: Ты самый красивый мужчина в мире, любовь моя (You're the most beautiful man in the world, my love.)
Alphonse: What does it mean ?
Boo: It means don't give me orders you fucking bastard
(Another little thing, my OC for Sugarboo is half Russian and half British)
~~
Seth, after learning Sugarboo also speaks Russian: Does Sugar think in English or Russian?
Alphonse: Bold of you to assume Boo thinks.
~~
Rook: Ugh, life can be difficult sometimes.
Sal (Sugarboo): But death, on the other hand...
Rook, squirting Sal with a water sprayer: No, Sal
~~
Boo: I don't think Faust is very happy about you dating his brother.
Rook: What makes you say that?
Boo, reading a text aloud: Rachel (Rook). I hope this message finds you before I do.
~~
That’s all for now! Hope you enjoyed!

[ Dragon Age: The Veilguard Spoilers ]
Well…I reached the end.
And I mostly survived.
Varric 😭
I’m not going to complain about the bits that I took issue with. It’s 3:30 am and I’m too emotional for objectivity.
I did all that work to get the Solavellan ending…and then I gave it all up to punch the egg man in the face. And I don’t regret it for a second. (Chalk it up to my Rook being a girl’s girl, I say.)
One day, I’ll reload and do the whole “secret ending” thing but my gosh, keeping Varric’s…what, spirit? Tethered between Solas and Rook through BLOOD MAGIC?? Even Merrill would not approve of this. I knew he was manipulating Rook. I thought I understood betrayal. But that…that really cemented his place as the villain in this story for me. Even to the last, he believed himself a god.
I lost Harding. That…really got to me. I sort of knew it would happen; her or Davrin, the game didn’t make some big secret of it. And, to be honest, the whole game had a lot of easily-predictable plot revelations, and I think that was one of its major strengths. You could always point out the traitor during the first conversation, and then feel that sense of “ha! I knew it.” If they’d tried too hard to subvert your expectations, it would have come across as poorly written.
I ended up being very glad that I got all the companions to Hero status, and all the factions to three stars, because that meant that I didn’t lose anyone else. It felt right, like I personally did put in those hours and make those careful choices to save those people, and they didn’t just get a free pass due to plot armor. It was all Rook.
And I did enjoy the end of Rook and Lucanis’ romance. To be honest, if that scene hadn’t been waiting for me after she got out of the veil prison, I would not have been able to keep playing. Was it enough? I think so, for Rook. I will be writing my own fanfiction embellishments though.
Scrolling back a bit, the moment in the game that first made me cry was Manfred waking up with magical powers and squealing with excitement. “Magic! Like you!” Instant waterworks. The depressing moments are never as meaningful to me as the shockingly touching ones, and Manfred embodied that sentiment wonderfully.
What else can I say? I loved it. 10/10 for me, especially after waiting 10 years. They honored Varric, and even if I’m still mad about it I guess it’s more than we got for any of our other past beloved NPCs. In my head, he’s hunting Hawke down in the Fade. One day, Cassandra will meet him there and they’ll be reborn as wisps who can dance around the Necropolis together. Emmrich will make sure they’re properly cared for.

One thing that I really dislike about Veilguard is that (spoilers through most of act 2)
the tone of the Lighthouse crowd is so chipper, so life coach-y whereas DA sidequests in their usual way are all about death and despair and little codex entries about idk people dying alone in the dark not because of some god’s failure but because people suck and betray each other out of greed and fear. See: overarching theme of the series.
And the Crossroads are LITERALLY FALLING APART AT THE SEAMS with Solas’s guilt and regret and you can, as you poke around there, fight a Boss Champion called The Betrayal of Felassan which the Caretaker says is extremely powerful because FELASSAN and there are notes and codes entries scattered everywhere that tells a much more subtle story not just about him but about the past. But it drowns in the many variations of the same group convo circled around the topic “so Solas regrets what he did?” WELCOME TO THE MEETING ROOK, YOU ARE ONLY TEN YEARS LATE LET’S START FROM THE BEGINNING AGAIN, SHALL WE? The main narrative is trying too hard to make him a (very sexy) Trickster God of Trickery and it exhausts me when the minor things like Solas’s memories and the codex give me a much, much better character and depicts an Empire that got corrupted by its own brilliance and lack of boundaries and Solas and the likes of him being counterweights to that, forming the line that should not be crossed, questioning authority - which is ANOTHER CRUCIAL THEME FOR THIS SERIES. The subtext talks about the dangers of blind worship, of hierarchies (please remember Solas proto-anarchist takes on society in DAI, his genuine disgust at all sorts of servitude, his spite if you abuse your Herald status, his entire CHARACTER) and abuse of power, of entitlement and lack of morals. You can do this thing, but should you? That's one of the crucial things about Solas as a character too, it cuts through the best and worst of him. His greatest fear, as he tells a friendly route Rook after Blood of Arlathan, is to end up like Elgar'nan, entitled and blind. As a summary of this moral conundrum the game gives us “SO SOLAS AND MYTHAL WERE DOIN’ IT?” and Rook’s refusal to accept that is written like “ewww, not the guy in my head doing it with Mythal” like some overgrown teenager. THAT DOESN'T EVEN MAKE SENSE, ROOK?
Also, the lack of subtlety and nuance about the Veil thing drives me batty like Solas tells Rook that he had made a plan to minimize the damage done to the world when the Veil was meant to go down. No follow up for that though. Like, is that a possible option to consider? Solas says Varric wouldn’t have agreed to thousands dying (I’m really not even sure about that characterization of Varric) and Rook is meant to just let that go? Come on. I want Rook to talk to Solas - THE CREATOR OF THE VEIL - about the Veil. I am so extremely uninterested in “exchanging verbal jabs” with the Dread Wolf (I hated you so much, Purple Hawke, you were part of the reason I stayed away from the DA fandom for years) I WANT THE LORE OF THE VEIL AND ITS ACTUAL CONSEQUENCES OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS WHAT ABOUT THOSE, FEN’HAREL TELL ME WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN UP TO.
Sorry. Those were… some words.
I don’t even think Act 3 is going to solve these issues for me (NO SPOILERS), but we’ll always have fanfic, I guess. I’ll write a coda where everyone is miserable and has existentialist convos about mortality and morals and faith.
--- A friendly reminder of this DAI banter that never fails to break my heart, and tell us the truth about Solas in a less clunky way than group conversations at the Lighthouse:
Cole: You didn't do it to be right. You did it to save them.
Inquisitor: Solas, what is Cole talking about?
Solas: A mistake. One of many made by a much younger elf who was certain he knew everything.
Cole: You weren't wrong, though.
I really, really wish Veilguard's main narrative gave me a sense of wanting to depict this.

Since it seems generally agreed upon that romantic banter is lacking in Veilguard, I came up with some Rook x Harding (+ other companions) banter. It's tailored to my Rook's personality, but I think a lot of it is general enough!
After "date" with Harding to test out her powers/initial visit to Kal-Sharok + unhardened Neve:
Neve: So, Harding, you and Rook have been traveling together for some time now, right?
Harding: Yep! Varric picked Rook up about a year ago and asked him to help us find Solas.
Neve: Were you two as friendly as you are now?
Harding: *giggles* Um. No.
Neve: Nothing like the end of the world to bring two people closer. I guess that's one thing to thank Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain for.
Rook (sarcastically): I'll be sure to thank them after I thank Solas.
--
Lucanis: Harding, I went to your room last night to bring you that slice of cake you asked for, but you weren't there.
Harding: Oh, I wasn't?
Lucanis: No.
Harding: Did you knock?
Lucanis: Yes.
*pause*
Lucanis: You were with Rook, weren't you?
Harding: Can you bring the cake tonight instead?
Lucanis: Of course.
Rook: A slice for me too, please.
After first kiss/lyrium poisoning:
Harding: Rook! I've been thinking about our...problem.
Rook: Come up with any solutions?
Harding: I think I have an idea! It'll require some flexibility but if we --
Davrin: Not in front of Assan!
Harding (sheepishly): Sorry, Davrin. We'll talk later, Rook.
After making relationship official:
Taash: So, Rook, Solas lives in your head.
Rook: I'm not really sure the specifics, but yeah, I guess.
Taash: So he can see what you see.
Rook: Uh, I'm not sure. Maybe some of it?
Taash: Do you think he watches when you and Harding --
Harding: Taash!
Taash: What? That really hasn't crossed your minds?
Harding & Rook: No!
Taash: Whoops.
Rook: Maybe we stick to just gardening tonight?
Harding: Agreed.
--
Bellara: So I think I'm close to finishing my novel!
Harding: That's exciting! Will you let me read it?
Bellara: Of course! You helped me flesh out the romance a lot when we talked about you and Rook.
Rook: Is that right?
Bellara: Yeah! I could feel the romance behind Harding's every word about you. I actually lifted some phrases directly from her. I'll give credit to Harding in the acknowledgments, of course!
Rook: What sort of phrases?
Harding: No spoilers, Rook!
Rook: Aw, I can't get a sneak peek?
Bellara: When this is all over, I'll send you an advanced copy. Oh! And maybe you can blurb it for me?
Rook: Of course, Bel.

DATV spoilers / vent (Inquisitor related — it is worth to note some of the stuff I'm talking about involves the ending of the game as well)
I know I've talked about this in DMs among friends but the thing that annoys me the most about the Inquisitor's appearance in Veilguard is that if you had a negative relationship with Solas in Inquisition and Trespasser, that gets completely ignored come DATV. The "stop Solas at any costs" is the de facto low approval ending, so why is my Trevelyan calling Solas a friend, a comrade, just like a friendly Inquisitor would? Why is he asking if there's another way, why is he saying he forgives him and calling him a friend to his face and comforting him?
It basically renders the Stop Solas/Save Solas import choice moot, imo. I was really hoping an Inquisitor who chose to stop Solas would actually get to be angry at what's unfolded and even say that they were never close, had their disagreements etc. My original Rook was absolutely ready to do it the hard way because of certain Revelations, and my current Rook is almost certainly going to pick the other default ending, and my low approval Inquisitor was like "no, there's got to be another way" ??????????????? when he should have been agreeing with Rook. I'm just ??? MAKE IT MAKE SENSE.
I personally love seeing an Inquisitor who is on the war path during Trespasser because of that DLC's events, especially after learning about Solas manipulating and lying to them, ("He used me. All along that bastard was manipulating us." "VIddasala's not killing Solas, I'm killing Solas", like it's Iconic to me!!!) so seeing my Inquisitor getting hit with the "He Would Not Fucking Say That" curse is annoying at best, infuriating at worst. Because god forbid there isn't a negative relationship in this game, and this would have been one of the tastiest to have!
I'll stop griping about it eventually, but this sort of thing is what fic is for, I guess.

I have finished Veilguard. A bunch of thoughts under the cut!
The Companions: Loved all of them and all the banter and their interactions. I thought the companion quests were fantastic and there was a lot of content there and I enjoyed it all. Voice acting was fantastic and some line deliveries made me tear up. And while it was honestly nice to have everyone get along well and be respectful with each other, I did miss some... bite and conflict. Like you get all those delicious conversations with Solas and questioning of motives and I wanted more of that sort of thing. Also I'd die for Assan and Manfred. The Environments: This is definitely one of the strongest parts of the game for me. Everything is gorgeous and I loved just walking around, exploring. I thought they found a great balance of streamlined and exploration! Puzzles were at a difficulty that I can still enjoy (thus very simple, I'm sure other people are annoyed by that) and it made exploring satisfying and relaxing instead of a chore. And I loved seeing changes in the environments after certain events or NPCs moving into places that I'd cleared. I rarely fast travelled because I loved walking through the Crossroads so much.
Rook: Overall, I enjoyed Rook. I chose Erika Ishii's voice for my first playthrough and thought it was fantastic. Also loved every Mourn Watch dialogue option. However... Rook has a loooot of auto dialogue and the dialogue options feel quite limited, so I'm worried about replays and being able to make different Rooks actually feel different. Also hate to say this, but Rook could smile a little less in cutscenes... I also don't think you can play a Rook that antagonizes any companions or is just plain shit at conflict resolution.
Combat: Even though I never felt like I fully mastered it, I enjoyed it. And especially after recently replaying all the other games - the dragon fights were so much cooler (though as a mage, they were also 80% running around screaming). I didn't miss being able to control my companions, except for taking screenshots. Romance: I romanced Bellara and I love her, she is my beautiful wife. I do wish there'd been more romance specific content, especially because you get to see soo much of your companions getting together and being together and you're just there like... what about me? Spare romance banter for Rook pls? I didn't even get a romance specific greeting! Though ultimately, I'm really happy with the romance and the ending added some welcome drama, because Bellara was the one that got abducted by the blight/Elgarnan and yesss! The drama! The fade statues guilt trip! She's so smart and fierce when she returns! And the last scene was super sweet. <3
Story: Overall I'd say... Yay? Loved all the Lore drops and actual answers. Thought the side quests were well done and interesting. Another shout out to the companion quests! All in all, I'm satisfied with the ending, I think. HOWEVER! You can feel the Things We Didn't Import all over the game. There were so many moments where I was like, okay they COULD have mentioned xyz here easily, but no, they have to go out of their way to be vague or not let you talk to this character much. I don't need actual cameos (Isabela you deserve better) but there's so many missed opportunities for simple mentions or codex entries and it's such a shame. Because this IS the culmination of the story and why can't we see that reflected in little moments, so that we can truly feel the depth of the story once more? But I do love the Codex! There's so much good stuff in there! I might even go back and read all the Codex entries I haven't yet. Oh, why do we see no Elves working for Solas? Did he manage to get his entire spy network killed before the game? Classic Solas. Music: Soundtrack was fine, better than I expected tbh though a few scenes had some really awkward whimsical music that made me go ?????????? The Varric thing is dumb. The 'twist' only works because I guess nobody ever mentioned his death ever again. I hate sacrificing character development or People Behaving Normally for twists.
Why is the Inquisitor still wearing FUCKING PYJAMAS. Really wish there was an option to dye armour. The decision between Minrathous and Treviso is a cool concept and loved (though hated) seeing the fallout but what.... Rook and their two buddies are the only thing standing between a city and complete ruin???? I do not think so.
That's all for now.
