I have a lot of stories I gave up on because I had too many (20 if I recall right), but the ones I've kept/survived from my middle school story purge were Two Over A Kind, and Shadow Killed. However I have other stories that came after those two after I entered high school such as Mandela's Requiem, Backyard Thursday, Never So Norm, Collidests, and Rose Burnt, (yes I have a lot of stories, but they're not lore heavy so they might seem short/fast)

Although the only official rendition of a comic out right now would be Mandela's Requiem but I want to re-draw it in a different format similar to my ask blog @ask-the-druggieverse and what Homestuck uses because it's easier and I can gather all the images I draw and upload it YouTube for people to read

As for old art? oh geez I have a LOT of old art....

2nd: Mandela's Requiem's epilogue characters! for any creepypasta fans out there yes... MR is like super/heavily inspired off of CRP characters, plus Ben Drowned was free game sense no one owned him (Nintendo technically own's this character legally but hey, fuck it we ball), and as for Casey I think you can guess who she's a walmart version of (Rina is completely original, I only added the "the killer" part cuz I thought it would be silly)

3rd: Backyard Thursday god silhouette list! I haven't fully drawn them out and needed some silhouette's to see how they would all look like!

4th: Mandela's Requiem epilogue Chester character sheet! I haven't touched this specific character sheet in a LONG time and need to come back to it as this story is one of the very few stories that has a small cast of characters to work on!!

5th: Slice Of Pieverse unified!Nightmare hehe ^w^ tiny spoilers: In SOPV fusion is a thing after the calamity happened (it's a split timeline of Underverse where Bill!Sans is a bit more important) although this isn't a "fusion" form, families (either blood related or adopted) don't fuse, they unify (essentially they can use each others abilities/their abilities become stronger)

2nd: I think my 3rd or 5th attempt at lineless? I don't know but I remember struggling a lot to do lineless so I just kinda just gave up, but hey! Look at me now! I really love lineless art now!!

3rd: My Danganronpa OC Yaku Unmei (or just Unmei) for a cancelled DGRP roleplay (I do not support the creator of the old roleplay. She intentionally or not has groomed minors into being desensitized to NSFW (I was already desensitized to it from the past but it's still fucked up) and wrote proship stuff.(I don't fucking care if it was for "accuracy" that shit was clearly a fetish. I can't believe your friends made me think for a second you weren't a groomer all because you have autism that's fucking insane.)) On a different note because I'm still not over that whole situation and person. (trauma response sorry) Unmei while being the ultimate unlucky student is one of the survivors of the killing game! If it was still ongoing... now she's just a DGRP OC that I might implement into one of my main stories

(NOTE: Barter is no longer a sans or an AU, he's just an OC that's in BT along with Fiddle(long story but after Fiddletale ends It's no longer an AU however people can still claim it as an AU IDC bc everyone's gonna get re-designs for BT so essentially they're separate characters in a way)), some changes between Bartertale!Barter and Backyard Thursday!Barter: AU: Cis Man, A Sans, Skeleton, Out!Code BT: Trans Man, Half-Human Half-Skeleton no undertale involved, just a regular citizen trapped in a country in a forever winter Also Fiddle and Barter are husbands in BT <3

5th: The very first drawing I've done for Collideists... Also fun fact: This story would have never been made if I never joined an event in a discord server I'm in where everyone was making these species called "Shadow Creatures" I chipped in and created a "Light Creature" concept and things went on from there

1st: Amari Feng, She's from my given up story called "A Fantasized Beginning", I gave up on this story because I had too many stories and this one just had too much stuff going on (In short: It's basically RWBY and MHA mixed into one, kids go to school to become pro-hero's in outer-space because an evil group known as "the dark entropy" were colonizing/taking over planets and the heros had no idea how they kept doing it, and then BOOM!!! PLOT FUCKING TWIST!!! the number 1 pro-hero was the one conducting the evil groups plans all along and the hero get's stopepd by the MC's, although the colonizing and taking over doesn't stop as more villains pop up and hero's continue being hero's but this time the hero's have a easier time saving everyone) I made this story when I was in middle school along with many others, although after I did my story purge the only two stories that survived were Shadow Killed and Two Over A Kind (TOAK had a massive story overhaul and is not like it's OG plotline) I don't have plans to go back to this story, however I might if I complete all of my stories before I die, which I'm sure I will because I'm shortening a lot of them, and if I do I will DEF shorten AFB by a lot because middle school me planned like 16 something seasons (jesus.) (Also Amari was not the MC but an antagonist that later becomes an MC and was heavily inspired off of Himiko Toga(Can you tell?))

2nd: Heh... My first attempt at lineless art.... This is also back when Blipthyn was blue and was named Blueprint, I do not like TOAK's 5th rendition of a story as I was going through a hard time and heavily trauma dumped the shit out of that specific rendition of TOAK and just scrapped a lot of it, only a few things I liked survived in the current 6th? 7th? version of the story and I plan to keep it that way unless it becomes too long in my eyes

3rd: THE CTT!!! CHAOS TIME TRIO!!! Also my fist art/was around the time I met my friends Keter and Geno in the lunime discord server! we all loved undertale at this time and formed this group, a lot of things changed about each character so these are their old/beta designs, however this piece still has a place in my heart because of how special it is to me :hearts:

4th: I'm gonna be for real with you I have no fucking clue who this was for These aren't my characters nor do I remember the person who created these OC's, I do know I was very proud of this drawing because I made the other person super happy, I just dunno who it was so if by any chance you're the creator of these characters hi!!! :3

1st: Laim! he's also from another cancelled story called 12-15-22-5, or also known as 12-15-22-5 Project: Life this story was a romance between a resurrected angel heading and a human, the resurrected angel's goal from the company he was revived from was to find a way to break someone's heart/love to the point of dying so that they could kill a god (for some reason?? my middle school self never really specified why) However things backfire as the resurrected Angel falls in love with the love interest (heh... not straight BTW...) and other resurrected angels are sent after him and his friends because it'll "sabotage" their plan, I never planned an ending for this story but I do remember that this story was inspired off of HXH and Four Leaf on webtoon

2nd: I'm gonna be so fr I don't know why I made this character (his name is Phrog)

3rd: Ian and Damien's first ever design <33 And also Shadow Killed's first ever concept art! their designs have been changed by now so yeah :(, in fact this art was made back when I was beginning to feel happy again, although that died out because Middle School was super rough for me.

4th: Ah yes.... DSMP.... Beeduo.... and... MICHEAL!!! (This was back when the DSMP was at it's prime from my knowledge... augh...) INKTOBER 2023 BEGINS OH BOY

so!! this is actually my sixth year doing Inktober (my first was 2018), and...not once have i done it the way i think it's intended. well i mean in 2019 and 2020 i did do digital "ink" drawings but i got veeeeeery tired of my lineart very fast.

as such! since then i've just done basically whatever for each day! some days its a doodle some days its a comic and some days its whatever i want it to be. i get a lot less burnt-out that way and i enjoy it more so e h

with that in mind though since i'm technically not following the actual rules of inktober (just the prompts) i wont be tagging any of these as inktober. guess you all get random scribbles for 31 days lol

anyhow if you've seen my rampaging undertale obsession i don't think i need to explain how i came up with this art lol

(So, last week I was doing a lab report assignment. I saw a research paper by a "Matsuda", and literally my first thought was:

"Matsuda! Who the hell do you think you are shooting?! Don't mess with me!!!"

Okay. So, yeah. You may see that I haven't been active at all since September, and totally not active since December. That lab report (due last week) was one of the reasons. And I also had 2 tests, also on last week.

Honestly I have just been very busy since school started again. Honestly, I have just been very busy the entire year.

(Like I paused playing Brok the InvestiGator since school started because it's just so intriguing, and have been dodging spoilers left and right since then)

Now that the year is coming to an end (which is surprisingly fast to me), I also realised I haven't done much outside school this year. Understandable and expected, but not really desirable. Most other things I have done were passive ones, like story reading and film/series watching. And mostly during summer, as well.

I didn't produce much this year, at least when compared to the last. Only 2 short stories, 2 shorter drabbles and 2 infodumps. Oh, and the Undertale story idea dump, which I am kinda proud of. Honestly never thought I would write it down entirely, let alone share with anyone. And all of these (except the infodumps) were done in the first half of the year.

Now that I technically am having a semester break, I wish I could/would start writing again, or have time to do something else other than studying and sleeping. I have started reading fics again, and I hope I could have the time to write my own too. Or honestly, write anything.

(Can't promise though, because exams come right after holidays. And second semester comes right after exams)

I guess I will start with writing something here before going to stories again. As I am writing this I can really feel the effect of not writing for a long time (so this post may be incoherent i'm sorry). There are something I have wanted to write it out, as well as some random thoughts I have had during my super busy school days a while ago (like that Matsuda cringe above).

I am starting to lose track of what I'm saying, so I guess I will stop here.

Hellooo everyone! I had an idea- *thunder in the distance*.

My loyal and perceptive readers might've noticed that I never call the original charecters by their name, with four exceptions. This is because I endeavored not to search for these chataracters, to avoid spoilers and to add another layer of... whatever it is I'm doing here. The four exceptions are Jenis, Ozro, Melina, (who all had their names written down in the movie itself) and Marco (who OP mentioned in the original tags). Thus I've given everyone else nicknames, but it grows tiring, stale, and confusing. Besides, I'm curious.

Here comes the question: how do I discover these characters' names without searching the wiki? How do I avoid breaking one of my self-imposed rules?

I came up with an idea this morning, didn't really think it through, and decided to try it. Some of you might know this guy:

I guess. I'm going to try and find out these characters' names using Akinator and using the very, very, very limited information I have. The "I don't know" button is going to get used So Much.

I just tested him with Byleth, and it worked, but he failed once. I'm giving him one missed guess, and if he doesn't guess them, I guess I'm fucked. Also, trust I'm answering as best I can, as a reblog has a limit of 10 pictures so I can't screenshot every question.

Uhhh.

In this frame we can see Ear Man again! He's working on lowering another life boat, and he looks very serious, maybe even with a frown. Captain Guy and Marco are working on the previous one. On the background we can see three spiky chimneys, expelling gas (I don't know if this boat is coal or vapor based). It's rather spooky. There are also some small buildings built in this boat, with bricked walls and red tiled roofs. Their windows are lit, but so is every corner of the Crown Petone. I suspect all the lights turned on, regardless of if there was a person inside (most of the passengers are in Undertale by now, and the group they abandoned must be still in the lobby.) I don't think there are enough Descolers to cover all these rooms. By the position of these windows, they could get caught really easily. Unless the solution to the puzzle is "run away", they are cheating. Would they let them cheat? Maybe? It's the Layton-shaped Object, after all. He has plot armor. Cool trick!

2. How did you hear about Sonic?

Technically I’m pretty sure I first heard of Sonic when I used to watch a little bit of Sonic Underground when I was in elementary school. It was either that or from Mario and Sonic at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games for the DS specifically, and I only had that to begin with because I was a Mario kid ALSKDKKS Funnily enough though I always played as Sonic even though I knew pretty much nothing about his games lol

4. Favorite male character(s)?

I think my top three have to be Silver, Sonic, and Metal, in no particular order because that order would probably change depending on what I’m fixated at the time lol I also really like Shadow too, just probably not as much as the other three any more. A funny thing is when I was first getting into the series, going through the games chronologically, even before I got up to 06 I just had a feeling Silver would end up being my favorite character based on vibes alone and he did!(at the time at least)

5. Favorite female character(s)?

I think Rouge might be my favorite, but I also reeeaaally love Tangle and Whisper, and Blaze is pretty great too! ALL THE GIRLS ARE SO GOOD it’s so hard to just pick a few!

7. Favorite vocal theme(s)?

OOOH NOW THIS IS A GOOD ONE there are so many vocal tracks that I love but I think my absolute favorite, as of recently, has to be One Way Dream. (Ignoring the fact that I was crying when I first heard it in Frontiers’ credits alskjdnfnsj) IT’S JUST SO GOOD it makes me so happy every time I listen to it! The music of the song itself just sounds so uplifting, and idk if this makes sense but it kind of reminds me of a combination of Endless Possibility and the general vibe of the Sonic Runners soundtrack, both of which I love so it makes sense that I would love their combination. AND THE LYRICS OH MY GOSH. The fact that the lyrics are a message from Sonic Team to the fans about how they’re dedicated to making the series even better than it already is because of how passionate the fan base is and how that passion is what drives them to keep going!! AAAAAAAAAA I LOVE IT SO MUCH (and another bonus is that I really enjoy singing and this song fits pretty well in my vocal range!)

I also reeeeaaaaaally love His World, but ESPECIALLY the Zebrahead cover, it’s just so fast paced and energetic it gets me super hyped. I also love Endless Possibility and pretty much all the boss fight themes in Frontiers (because of course I do alskdjfn). And special shout out to City Escape Act 1 from Generations, mostly because I just love the little section at the end

17. Favorite Sonic music track(s)?

OOOOH ANOTHER GOOD ONE there are literally so many I love I could probably spend hours listing all of them so I’ll try to limit myself lol. One that immediately stands out though is Rooftop Run (Day) from Unleashed (which you could probably guess from my url alakdkdnms) it’s another one of those songs that just makes me sooooooo happy to listen to because it’s so upbeat and energetic and AAAAAA I love it! And of course I also love the versions of the song used in Generations too. Spring Emotions from Sonic Runners is another one I absolutely ADORE I CAN’T EVEN FIND WORDS TO DESCRIBE IT IT’S JUST SO GOOD. I could probably say the same for a few other tracks in the Runners soundtrack but I’ll just leave it at the one for now lol. And I’m with you (The End boss theme) from Frontiers. OUGH THE EMOTIONS THAT SONG MAKES ME FEEL ARE INSANE. I don’t even know what to say, it just feels so climactic and leaves just the right emotional impact for a final boss, big Undertale vibes tbh (outside of just the gameplay lol).

A few others that stick out to me are Stardust Speedway and Metallic Madness from CD (especially the bad future versions of each), which I’m pretty sure I’m obligated to like as a Metal Sonic fan ALSKDJK, I honestly really like Windy Hill Zone 1 from Lost World and Sky Road from Team Sonic Racing more than I thought I would, and Solaris Phase 2 from 06 and Super Sonic vs. Perfect Dark Gaia from Unleashed are both AMAZING orchestral tracks for the final boss fights of their games.

This ended up getting so much longer than I expected, and sorry I didn’t really have too much to say for the first three questions and then proceeded to completely go off in the music department ALAKDJFND I would’ve finished this sooner but right when I was almost done writing it tumblr crashed and I lost all my progress so I had to start over aalksjfkd but this was really fun! Alphys Being Transgender Needs To Be Canon

(Spoilers For Chapter 2 in this, so don’t read if you haven’t beaten the game in the Pacifist Route)  

if you look up the development of Alphys,

you will find out that she wasn’t originally a female character

and she was originally suppose to be male, but was changed into female.

I think that Undyne would still love Alphys and know she was just following her heart and soul and being true to herself. 

so yeah I believe that both versions of Alphys in Undertale and Deltarune,

are technically Transgender and it should be made canon and be revealed in a future chapter of Deltarune.

also I want to mention I had a weird dream where I saw a lot of changelings from MLPFIM, but I think I said I wouldn’t be able to feed them.

guess it’s like me knowing I wouldn’t have enough love and I think I might of had thoughts before....

well if you think about it, the Changelings from MLPFIM might be technically   

Fairy-Ponies, well maybe....we know there are other types of equine besides the earth-pony, unicorn and pegasi.

like the “Sirens” that Stygian met, could of been Kelpie who took the forms of Siren-Ponies corrupted forms.

and those Kelpie had corrupted the Sirens they had copied the forms of,

and they end up as their scapegoats and banished to the human world.

the negative magic energy is what transforms the Siren-Ponies into their corrupted forms. 

so yeah I believe as soon as Stygian got back with help,

the Sirens were made the scapegoats for the Kelpies.

but anyway back to Alphys, I think it be a good idea that Alphys being a Transwoman is made canon.

and by the looks of Chapter 2, the canon of the ship between Undyne and Alphys is strong.

if it turns out that Susie doesn’t have parents, and it is just her and her unknown sister....and maybe other siblings.

then Undyne and Alphys can become Susie and her siblings new Moms.

well if Susie only has one sibling, then those two would just end up being the adoptive mothers of just Susie and her younger sister or older sister.

it be cute if Susie accidentally calls Alphys Mom in class.

Noelle might find it really sweet, Kris might well....

that show can be seen as taking place in a different timeline, where the girls are a few years older than their past selves and share the same past like their counterparts but their futures ending up differently.

misc spoiler free ramblings

-ive um. well i guess ive technically been waiting for this game to be out since.. 2017? gosh. ever since this and this comic came out. theres technically one more comic in this series but it spoils something later in the game. generally. gestures vaugely. the tone and some aspects of the story have changed a deal over the years but i still see its remnants over the final game.

-so. game of the year for me!!!! im so happy to see the story unfurl to completion <-- guy who has only played one newly released game this year

-the top review on steam compares this to pathologic and i find that... unfair? kind of. im pretty sure i only fully died once all game. so its not thaaat hard.

-but it is a purposefully painful game in some aspects, its about being stuck in a timeloop and doing the exact same thing over and over after all, but is shockingly forgiving about this painful aspect.

-story wise, the game knows youre gonna run through it a lot and the little details as siffrin has new dialogue as he grows more jaded and slips up around people and sees new info feel very lovingly crafted. it feels kind of undertale in this aspect i think. dialogue repeats but some characters know and it makes it feel fun, wondering whats next

-mechanics wise, after a few ish loops fully it starts handing our abilities that make the slog of going through it again out like candy. its a game of repitition but its not a game of punishment, if that makes sense.

-so thats kind of why i recommend it strongly to timeloop fans and not too much but still happily to others. its a timeloop game youre getting exactly what you think you will from a timeloop game.but like. its not evil about it. but its still a timeloop game. lol.

-and sif is my little guy. hi little guy. i love his look its so iconic. definetly one of the reasons the comic series lingered on me. hi little guy

do any of the characters have alternate costumes? like, but alternate designs, but other pairs of clothes they wear?

I mean, everyone will have a alternate outfits for their dates and stuff... Oh I never mention that, huh? Well in Flipflopped, there will be a ton more Dates than how many there were in Undertale. Characters like Hapstablook (And Maybe Napstablook) Undyne, Alphys, Papyrus, Sans, Toriel, Asriel, and even Sourpuss (Burgerpants) ans Muffet will probably have dates and unique outfits for that occasion. My friend, @thats-golden13, came up with a few cool designs that I think you'll all like.

Just as a little spoiler (I guess?) I may as well list how many outfits the characters would likely have in Flipflopped.

Frisk- Frisk only wears one outfit really throughout their journey through the Underground, which is a Halloween themed sweater that I'll show to you guys soon. While Frisk can still get the Armor and weapons like in Undertale, their outfit never really changes too much.

Hapstablook- Hapstablook has two outfits which are simply his Royal Robes outfit and his casual outfit he wears at home... it's still super fabulous and is practically drowning in glitter.

Asgore- He doesn't really have any alternate outfits aside from the usual jacket he wears all the dang time. But he does have a Pink Flowery Sweater in his closet that he wears on Weekends. :)

Alphys- Alphys has two outfits, her normal jacket and pajamas outfit, and she does also have this dress that she never wears.

Undyne- Undyne has three outfits, her equivalent to the "Battle Body" which I haven't named yet, "Her" date outfit, and one more outfit I haven't decided on what exactly it's going to be yet.

Papyrus- Papyrus is going to have three outfits, his Royal Guard Armor, his casual outfit, and a snazzy date outfit that I'm not going to tell you what it is yet. >:3

Asriel- Just like Asgore, Asriel only has one outfit he wears everyday, which is a purple sweater with small devil wings he added onto it himself.

Gaster- Blah Blah Blah, something something something. Gaster has only one outfit, you get the drill.

Sans- Sans is technically cheating here since Sans has two outfits technically, but he's wearing them both at the same time because... it's Sans... of course he wouldn't be bothered to wear something else...

Toriel- Toriel has several outfits to wear since she is the head of a giant TV studio and the owner of several kids restaurants. I'd estimate that Toriel would have a whopping five outfits he'd wear while Frisk going through hotland... well... Frisk would only see four outfits because Toriel's last outfit will probably only be seen in some sort of flashback.

Napstablook- Blooky has two outfits, one being him Kingly Cloak outfit he usually wears, and the other being a cute little blue Sweater with a ghost tear pattern on it, along with a ruby necklace he always wears around his neck, it also has some sort of Pink Ribbon tied on the necklace for some reason. Hmmm.

Well that's pretty much all the different outfits we have planned right now. We might add more outfits in the future, we'll let you know if something happens. ;)

You wrote a skeleton porn?!? I thought you just made pickles!

Yeah before I was a young corporate asshole/pickle conman, I was a flat broke, hungry, recently graduated grad student in NYC, who had just spent a full month in the hospital getting various surgeries and discovering an entirely new ceiling for how much pain I could experience (on account of I couldn’t stop puking and my digestive system stopped working and no doctor knew why). I was out of commission for a WHILE.

 If you can imagine, this impacted my career prospects in a major way that I did NOT ACCOUNT FOR when I took out them loans. I had no income, no job, no creative outlet, and nothing to do with my days but feel nauseous and in pain and sorry for myself. 

I have tried to recreate my headspace when I think back on this, but in the end, I honestly don’t know what compelled me to start writing a sans x reader second person smutty fanfic, other than, I guess, I needed something to do, and I’d just played Undertale so it was fresh in my mind. I hadn’t written fanfic since I was like 15 and I had certainly not stuck with it for more than a chapter or two. I had never written smut, I had never written second person, and I do not, personally, find the eight bit skeleton a particularly fuckable character.

Honestly? I think I did it because I thought it was funny?

Anyway, I ended up writing two fucking full on novels, and once I stopped pandering, the story got good? Like Book 2, in particular, is actually - I think - a good book. 

And my readers, my lovely, kind, generous readers, they helped me out immensely. Reader donations kept the lights on and the water running and I got to eat more than one meal a day. Oh god, and also I can’t forget t-shirt sales! Against all odds, they bought fucking t-shirts and hoodies with obscure references from my fanfic, based on designs donated by other readers. Fuck, you guys are nice. I’ll say it every chance I get; thank you from the bottom of my soul. 

Long story short, I was in the deepest pit of my life, but just like Alexander Hamilton, I wrote my way out. 

Except, you know, I wrote 484,000 words about a skeleton with an ecto-dick, and am now, technically, the author of the most popular undertale fanfic of all time [by certain metrics].

(Unless it contains spoilers) can I hear about your worldbuilding? I'm very interested-

OH MAN- Well I’m gonna start off with: I love worlds with certain restrictions, from resources, areas, whatever- the less that’s available, the more fun it is to work around everything else.

So obviously this is why I love the Undertale world, characters and concept so much- it’s heavily restricted in what the world is capable of doing/having because the barrier is normally a constant part of any AU. 

But I always start with a few base ideas, the first one is always: 

Food. (Of course). The original game already shows that there’s problems with food and resources, other than the fruit that Undyne pummels, and the eggs and milk MTT has, there doesn’t seem to be any form of fresh food available and some of the monsters are literally selling garbage as food. Most of the decent food are made from a long-life resource like flour.. while I don’t know where all this flour comes from, we’ll just pretend it magically comes from the dump and doesn’t somehow get soaked through and go bad. Let’s just ignore that monsters turn into dust when they die

I try to plan out how much of the layout of the underground changes depending on the world, I’ll use my version of Underswap as an example in this.

So for Underswap, the snow area would be later, towards the end. I haven’t completely planned the layout except that an area similar to waterfall would be directly outside of the ruins door, which is overgrown with vines/various plants. I haven’t named any of the areas because I’m emotionally attached to the old ones can’t come up with new ones. 

So any outside resource comes from the dump- I like to have it as a consistent in the underground across AU’s although maybe I should plan one without it.. it might be interesting. 

So the distribution of supplies/food will effect other parts of the layout, IF the castle can get some form of access to sunlight (I’ve always found that weird, IS IT SUNLIGHT, IS IT JUST FIRE- WHY ARE THERE BIRDS SINGING) then it should logically stay at the end but if there’s no sunlight available it’d logically be closer to the dump but would that risk blocking where it comes in- would the royal family give up being close to the barrier where they can see it for exclusive control of supplies? HMMMM

Obviously I haven’t completely planned that part out lmao. It’s something that can be changed at any point because it doesn’t effect the other characters or story that much unless I plan to draw it out. So I guess I’ll just pick what I like when I get to it.

Story-wise, regardless of the layout- the king will be at the end. I always like ending it with that, it never matters how much I change lol, the only AU I’ve made that doesn’t follow this specific route is Swapfell. (And technically Fellswap, but I haven’t planned much of that at all)

Obviously I’ve changed some parts where we expect certain monsters to live, so I get to throw them in. While I would like to cut hotland out completely (for layout/lore) I know that Alphys probably lives there because she’s a lizard, so there would HAVE to be some kind of warm area, not lava again though, I like the looks of hotland but it wouldn’t make sense in between waterfall and snowdin. On the upside, she’d definitely live close to Undyne so they could be dorks a lot.

Anyway- We know that Asgore and Toriel rule over the monsters, and depending where things are modified, or how, then that can usually change a lot from the start. In my Underswap (SPOILERS) Asriel wasn’t dusted by the human, and grew up, taking over the throne from Asgore and Toriel, I haven’t decided if they’re still alive or not, or how much they effect the story, it could be a lot or, none at all. 

Since I still have a lot to plan out lol, this is usually when I grab all my current ideas/concepts and yell at someone until I’m happy with what comes out lol. All this background stuff about the food would only be lightly implied with the characters, with how they act or appear. 

So I’ve got- Food, sources, layout and leaders/rulers.

I like to go over those world building questions lists if I feel like I’m missing something (Which I’ll have to when I want to work on Underswap more) but yeah, thankfully, with all the variety of the characters, I don’t need to worry too much about modifying them since they already have really good base characteristics!

After all that oddly vague rambling, I have one thing to add:

This is one of the closest things to my heart that I've posted in a long time. If you're going through anything rough right now, i encourage you to read this even though its definitely cheesy and kinda long.

I dont always know the best words to say to encourage people I care about who are struggling. I love all my friends but when I see you having a hard time i dont know what to say beyond just "hang in there, i believe in you." And i know that isnt enough. So instead I'm gonna try to share something that helps me a lot with keeping myself afloat with my mental health, while also infodumping about something I love (because why wouldnt I do that lmao). I'm gonna tell yall a little story about why Undertale is my favorite game. (Or I guess technically I should say has my favorite narrative in a game. Persona 5 is probably my favorite as a game overall. Hell, its narrative comes in close second as my favorite, although that has more to do with my politics than with my personal life [specifically my belief that change sometimes must be achieved outside what's considered legal or even sometimes moral, and that fighting injustice trumps everything else including law])

This may come as a surprise to yall but I have the occasional bout of struggling with mental illness. (For the record that was a joke. I'm pretty open about my struggles xD) There are times when I feel like I'm powerless against *insert struggle here*, and those times are often. But as cheesy as it sounds, something about this little indie RPG has made a big difference in my life.

I've never been a big believer in the whole "That band/artist/person/book/whatever saved my life!!!" cliche. Whatever that thing was, didnt save your life unless you mean that the thing, in a literal sense, physically prevented you from death. You found inspiration to keep living from the source material, and then YOU saved your life. But I guess that's kind of pedantic, and in the colloquial sense it makes sense to say that thing "saved your life." If we're applying that definition, then I think it's safe to say that Undertale at least played a part of saving my life.

I'm not going to go into too much detail here because a) yall didnt come here to read the whole plot of Undertale, and b) spoilers. But basically Undertale is a story about this (canonically gender nonbinary, fun fact) 8 year old kid. (For the sake of this post I'm assuming Pacifist run as canon.) This kid climbed a mountain that it was said no one would return from. What they were running away from, who knows. But they fell into a chasm and found themself in a magically sealed underground full of monsters, many of whom wanted them dead (because a human soul was necessary for them to escape the Underground). But through a seemingly ordinary human feature-- determination-- the child was able to change the fate of the Underground forever. They befriended monsters who fully intended to kill them. They journeyed through a treacherous landscape. And at the end of it all, their determination even managed to save every monster in the Underground.

Their determination allowed them to do all this. Now that's a message that resonates with me. Simple human determination can do so much. I mean sure in a fictional video game it can allow a character to literally defy death, control time, and reshape the world as they see fit. But even in the real world, determination holds so much power. Think about it. Some people think of it as prayer. Some think of it as witchcraft, manifesting your will on the world through magic. Some might even say that human thought and brain wave patterns can have effects on morphic energy fields that cover the planet and can be scientifically observed to influence random number generators. But all these things hold one thing in common: your determination. In prayer you're determined to appeal to the highest power you know to fulfill what you've asked for. In the other two, you're determined to exert your will upon the world in some way or another.

Your determination can get you through so much. I keep myself afloat these days by reminding myself to stay determined. Because my determination will see me through and give me the strength I need to grow, to improve myself, to make smarter choices, to do things that I didnt think I had the courage to do. And I believe in all of you too. Please do me a favor and learn a lesson from a silly little indie game. Stay determined, for me.

Undertale: Three Years Later

Look. Mostly, I write reviews. I try to describe how a game works, and then what I liked and didn’t like about it, so that a layman could read a review of mine and have a basic understanding of the game.

I don’t really need to do that with Undertale. First of all, it’s a cultural phenomenon. You’ve probably encountered Undertale at some point, and if you haven’t you probably did and just didn’t recognize it. Second, it’s three years old. You can understand “How Undertale Works” by watching the trailer. Although, I guess you could do that with most of the things I review. Maybe I should rethink my general strategy, huh?

Anyway. Last night I beat Undertale for the umpteenth time and I wanted to write about it. So, in lieu of a normal review, I want to talk about why Undertale is special- to me. I want to talk about what makes Undertale a game I keep coming back to.

(I listened to this album while I worked on this. You should listen to it, too.)

I’ve noticed a tendency when people talk about Undertale to decry the fandom. The most common phrase is “Undertale’s great, but the fans are shit.” I don’t really understand this mindset, to be honest? I think there’s a lot of Undertale “content” out there I’m not interested in consuming (the re-written steven universe covers come to mind) but that doesn’t make it shit. It’s just for someone else. A lot of Undertale fans are kids, and by nature of being kids, they make content for other kids. There’s nothing wrong with the vast majority of Undertale fanworks, even especially the ones you’d call cringy. They just aren’t for you. (Side note: I just remembered that MatPat sent a steam code for this game to the pope. holy shit. what an extremely online thing to do)

Steven Universe is much the same, I think. People like to bash the Steven Universe fandom as zealous or overly critical(which. fair.) but I don’t know. I think if you avoid the people making two hour “STEVEN UNIVERSE CRITICAL” videos you just end up with a lot of people who wanna talk about the lesbian rock show. That’s not so bad.

And I think the reason these two things in specific are targeted this way isn’t a coincidence. Steven Universe is a kid’s show only technically- it airs on Cartoon Network, but the general themes of loss and redemption are far more mature than anything I watched as a kid. Undertale isn’t so much a game for children as it is a game that happens to be appropriate for children. But I think the greatest common factor here is that they’re both about redemption, and hope.

Undertale and Steven Universe work on the fundamental belief that people, even people who want to kill you, are good.

I don’t want to date this piece too much, but in 2018 that’s a little hard to believe. We have a vile GOP pushing a rapist into the Supreme Court. (I took a break from writing this to watch a little of his hearing, and had a panic attack while he screamed about what a great man he is.) We have a president caging literal, actual children. Consuming media which would have you believe that the opposition are good seems a little misguided, right?

But I don’t know that it is. Obviously, capital-E Evil exists- we see it in ICE and Kavanaugh and McConnell- but that unrelenting, selfish Evil is rare. Most people aren’t Evil, or even Good. Most people are people, with all the flaws and charms that entails.That’s why the most common run in Undertale isn’t Genocide, or Pacifist. It’s Neutral. The Neutral run isn’t the best run, or the most rewarding- but it is the easiest and most common.

Which is not to say that if you ran or prefer the Neutral run, you’re a bad person. the Neutral run is far too wide a category to be making judgements like that. For example, you can not kill a single enemy and get the neutral ending- or you can kill every major character and still get the neutral ending. The Genocide and Pacifist runs are defined by how you go out of your way. You either spend the extra time to be a monster, or you spend the extra time to help people. You aren’t being faulted for taking the “easy way out”- but your perseverance will reward you, one way or another.

I could talk for hours about the individual pieces of Undertale- the phenomenal music, the equally cute and creepy art direction, the fantastic cast of characters and perfect second-to-second writing. But none of that really comes together without Undertale’s morality system. The music isn’t as important until it’s not there. The characters aren’t as impactful until you know their life is in your hands. I won’t ever play a genocide run again- (I barely played it the first time- my friend John killed everyone while I cowered behind him, literally.) but the shadow of the genocide run hangs over me every time I play the game. Every time I throw myself against Undyne’s fight, or Mettaton EX, or god help me Muffet, I know in the back of my mind I could make it quick. But it isn’t worth it. It never is.

Undertale is special to me because it’s about redemption. It’s about being better than you were yesterday, and taking the extra step to be better whenever you can. “Aren’t God of War and Bojack Horseman about that, too?” Yeah, kinda. But God of War and Bojack Horseman both suffer from being inherently for adults, and the necessity of intertwining adult themes changes the stakes of those stories, and introduces problems Undertale doesn’t really have. Undertale is special to me because it looked me in the eyes and told me it believed in me, and that I could be good.

People always say Undertale is a game best played blind. I don’t know that that’s true. I think a line at the end of the pacifist run is the perfect advice for someone just starting Undertale. “Don’t kill, and don’t be killed. That’s the best you can strive for.”
