Below the cut is Season 1 Episode 2 of my Ginny and Georgia Fanfic; My Mother's Daughter
At the bleak hour of 3 AM, Alex jolted awake, heart pounding, and sweat slicking her brow from another nightmare. Try as she might, sleep eluded her. She sighed and reached for her notepad; a song idea had sprouted from the chaos of her dreams, and she wasn’t about to let it slip away.
Alex’s creativity wasn’t confined to just writing stories and poems. She also sang, played the guitar, and wrote songs. Unlike Ginny, who excelled at the piano, Alex kept her musical talents hidden. Georgia probably didn’t even know she could play the guitar. Alex had picked up playing the guitar in music class back in Texas and now imagined the chords since she didn’t have one of her own.
She often felt overshadowed by Ginny and preferred to keep some things to herself to avoid comparisons.
As she was finishing her lyrics, she heard Georgia and Ginny talking in the other room. She tried to ignore it until something about Chewbacca caught her attention. Curiosity piqued, she went to Ginny’s room and saw her sister plucking a hair from their mother’s chin with a pair of tweezers.
“I’m not awake enough for this,” Alex muttered, shaking her head before returning to her room and closing the door.
Restlessness gnawed at her, making her feel as though she couldn’t sit still. She loved her home in Wellsbury but sometimes felt an overwhelming urge to move, to do anything but remain idle.
Abandoning her half-finished song, Alex decided to prepare for school. Getting ready and having breakfast early would give her a legitimate reason to leave the house without sneaking out. With that plan in mind, she set about her morning routine, hoping the activity would help settle her restless energy.
----------------------------------------------------------
Alex’s plan worked perfectly. She got ready, had breakfast, left a note saying she had left for school, and was out of the house before anyone else was even downstairs. She found a quiet spot in the school’s hallway and resumed her songwriting as she waited for the first bell. he was so lost in her creative flow that when a small package landed on her lap out of nowhere, she nearly jumped out of her skin.
“Jesus!” she exclaimed, her heart racing.
“I’ve been called worse,” Press said with a grin, plopping down next to her and glancing at her notebook. “Working on another poem?”
“A song, actually,” Alex replied, closing the notebook and examining the package. “What’s this?”
“Breakfast,” Press said with a shrug, tearing into his own. “If you’re here this early, I figured you might’ve skipped eating.” He handed her a carton of milk to go with it.
“Thanks,” Alex said with a grateful smile, accepting the milk. “I know why I’m here this early, but what about you?”
“The cafeteria makes killer turnovers for breakfast,” Press replied, his gaze fixed on something across the hall as he ate.
Alex knew better than to pry when someone didn’t want to talk. She despised it when people did it to her, so she wasn’t going to do it to Press. Instead, she set the milk carton beside her, opened her package, and said, “I’ll be the judge of that.” She tore off a piece of the turnover and popped it into her mouth, her eyes widening in surprise. “Holy apples, Batman – this is amazing!”
Press nearly choked on his milk but managed to recover with a smug smile. “Told you.” He studied Alex for a moment, clearly debating whether to ask her something.
Noticing his hesitation, Alex waved her hand in front of his face. “What’s up with your face?”
“Why did you take a picture of your fractured reflection and write that poem for your self-portrait?” Press asked, his voice steady.
Alex wasn’t expecting that. She looked away, biting her lip in thought before answering, “We’re not close enough for me to tell you that.” She was referring to an incident involving a bee, not what had happened with Kenny. She doubted she’d ever tell him about the bee; she didn’t want him to see her differently after knowing.
Press didn’t push further. “Okay,” he said, finishing the last bit of his turnover and his milk. He got up and threw his trash away in a nearby barrel. When he returned, he held out his hand to help Alex off the floor. “The classroom should be unlocked by now.”
Alex took his hand, tossed her trash, and together they walked to their first-period classes.
----------------------------------------------------------
“Where were you this morning?” Ginny asked, sliding into her seat beside Alex in AP English.
“Over the rainbow sipping tea with the Mad Hatter and the Scarecrow,” Alex replied, not lifting her eyes from her notebook.
“Is that a euphemism for something, or are you just avoiding the question?” Ginny pressed, genuinely puzzled.
Alex finally looked up and beamed, “Yes,” before diving back into her writing. She’d let Ginny puzzle over that one.
The bell rang, cutting off any further questions. However, as soon as class was over and they lined up to get their quizzes back, Ginny cornered her again. “I’m serious, where were you? Mom was freaking out until she saw your note.”
“I highly doubt that,” Alex replied coolly. “Besides, you said she saw my note, which clearly stated I was going to school early. So why are you asking me where I was?” Alex’s patience was wearing thin, and Ginny’s persistence wasn’t helping.
“I think what Ginny really wants to know is if you snuck out to hook up with Press before school,” Maxine chimed in with a smirk.
“Oh my deity of your choosing,” Alex groaned, rolling her eyes. Her attention snapped back to the teacher, who announced that only one student had a perfect score and that Hunter Chen was the one to beat. When Ginny and Alex got their quizzes back, both were scored 100%. “Racism is real, yo,” Alex muttered sarcastically as she exited the classroom, echoing Ginny’s words from their first day.
At her locker, Alex suddenly felt someone’s presence far too close behind her. She screamed and scrambled away, heart pounding, only to realize it was Press. He was approaching her slowly, like one might approach a startled deer. “Don’t do that!” she screamed again, not caring who heard.
“Whoa, Alex, I’m sorry…” Press’s apology was genuine. He hadn’t even managed to get out his intended “Boo!” before she freaked out. “Alex, you’re shaking.” He followed her into an empty classroom, watching as she hugged herself tightly, avoiding his gaze. Her behavior spoke volumes. “Who hurt you?”
Alex’s mind was a whirlwind, memories crashing down like a relentless tide. It wasn’t until Press’s words broke through that she managed to tether herself to the present. “What?” she asked, her voice fractured.
Press approached cautiously, stopping when she looked ready to bolt. “Who hurt you? Give me their name, and I swear I’ll make them pay.”
Alex saw the fierce determination in his eyes. She cleared her throat before speaking again. “I already did. Metal stool, below the belt – he won’t be hurting anyone else again.” She could see the anger simmering in Press, barely contained. “It happened in Texas, and I don’t want to talk about it.”
Press paced, trying to calm himself. “Okay.” After a moment, he stopped and asked, “Permission to hug you?”
Alex felt tears welling up. When she practically threw herself at Press, she knew she was clinging to him like a lifeline she hadn’t realized she needed.
So much for keeping it to herself, but Press didn’t run for the hills. If anything, it seemed to bring them closer, and to her surprise, Alex didn’t mind that one bit.
----------------------------------------------------------
After school, Alex was brought to the guidance counselor’s office by her Math teacher for a meeting to discuss her progress. Alex repeatedly told them that she didn't need tutoring, but they just pointed at her assignments and insisted. They even threatened to call her mother, Georgia, for a chat about next steps. Alex knew that bringing Georgia into this would lead to a lecture about her school performance and yet another comparison to Ginny. Though she doubted her mom even realized she was doing it, so she begrudgingly agreed to the tutoring. Again, it’s not like she needed it.
Alex plopped herself at a table by the window at Joe's Cafe, waiting for her tutor. She audibly groaned when she saw Hunter walking in. Sure, she knew that Hunter and Press were friends, but since Hunter dated Ginny, she figured Ginny would hear all about this.
"Hey, Alex," Hunter greeted with a friendly smile, setting his bag on the floor and sitting across from her. "I brought some practice pages for you to do so I can get a sense of your starting point, and we can go from there." He placed the papers and a pencil in front of her. "Do you have any questions before we get started?"
"Yeah, can we just pretend we did this whole tutoring thing so we can leave? I don't need tutoring, so you're just wasting your time." Alex’s annoyance was palpable.
Hunter looked at her supportively. "It's okay, Alex. Not everyone gets this, and if you're worried about me telling anyone, I won't."
Seeing the determination in Hunter’s eyes, Alex knew he wasn’t going to back down, so she begrudgingly started working on the sheets while he talked.
Hunter, thinking she was ignoring him and doodling, said, "I give you my word, I won't tell anyone you need tutoring." He added, "Could you at least try to be respectful and not doodle on the papers?"
"I'm not doodling," Alex retorted defensively. "I'm a horrible artist, so I don't doodle. You can ask Press if you don’t believe me. And like I said, I don't need tutoring. It's not that I can't do it; I just don’t care to. If the teacher paid attention, she’d see that I deliberately do just enough to pass. Why put effort into something I don't care about? Before you start lecturing me on respect, that goes both ways. How about you respect me enough to, oh, I don’t know, believe me when I say I don't need this?" She didn’t even look up from the papers as she spoke, and when she finished, she slapped the practice sheets down in front of Hunter— all completed.
Hunter looked shocked, his eyes wide as he saw that every single answer was correct. He flipped through the pages, checking to make sure the answer key wasn’t mixed in. "How...what..." he stammered.
"I told you I didn't need tutoring," Alex said, smugly.
"You sure don't," he laughed. "But I don't get it—why don't you do the work if you can clearly do it? Why aren't you in AP Math, too?"
Alex sighed with an elaborate hand gesture. "Were you not listening? I don't care about Math or any other subject. I do just enough to not get held back and focus on what I like. No point in wasting time on the other stuff.”
Hunter was still processing everything. "You could literally get into any college..."
Alex practically leaped out of her chair to lean over the table and cover his mouth with her hand. "I've heard it all before—no intention of hearing it again. If you promise to hush and never bring it up again, I'll show gradual improvement or whatever. Deal?"
When Hunter nodded, she removed her hand, returned to her seat, and sighed. "So, now what? We can go, right?"
Hunter, needing to collect his tutoring hours, said, "Actually...could we work on something? Anything? Joe needs to sign off that I've been here tutoring, and I’m counting on these hours to..."
Alex held up her hand. "Say no more. Homework it is."
Hunter was surprised she agreed. "Thanks. I appreciate it."
Alex shrugged. "You don't annoy me as much as I thought you would, so no biggie."
Hunter looked amused and confused. "Thanks, I guess."
Alex set her homework down. "I don't particularly care for Ginny's friends, and you're part of that group, so I assumed you'd be as nail-on-a-chalkboard-esque as them."
"Press is friends with them, too," Hunter countered.
"His so-called friends called him a psycho sociopath and told me I could do better. You may be friends with them and Press may be friends with you, but those ladies are so not his friends," Alex said without hesitation.
Hunter took that into consideration. "Noted." He then spotted some music notes and lyrics on one of Alex's notebook pages. "You're a songwriter?"
Alex flipped the page and went back to her History assignment. "We're not friends enough to get into that."
Hunter held his hands up in a playful, dramatic 'I surrender' manner. He could definitely see why Press was so into Alex and hoped it’d work out for them.
----------------------------------------------------------
When Alex got home after Hunter’s ‘tutoring session’ ended, she found Press perched on the front steps of her house, waiting. She couldn't help but feel a warmth spread through her chest at the sight of him there, almost like he was a guardian waiting to ensure she made it home safe.
“You’re not gonna go all Edward Cullen on me and watch me when I sleep, are you?” she teased, her playful smirk masking the genuine curiosity and slight nervousness beneath.
Press’s face turned stoic, masking any hint of confusion. “I have no idea what you’re referencing.”
Alex squinted at him, trying to discern if he was serious. A flicker of amusement crossed her mind, lightening the lingering weight of her day. She sat down beside him, chuckling. “What’s up?”
“You weren’t at Brodie’s tonight. Everything okay?” He cut straight to the chase, his eyes searching hers for any sign of distress.
“I had to do some mandatory tutoring,” Alex explained, rolling her eyes dramatically. “It was easier than dealing with the school calling my mom in.”
Press raised an eyebrow. “You’re literally one of the smartest people I know. You don’t need tutoring.”
“That’s what I tried to tell them,” Alex sighed, leaning back on her arms. She could see the concern in Press’s eyes, and it touched her more than she expected. “I’m fine, Press.”
“Could’ve fooled me,” he snapped, then immediately softened, rubbing his brow. Guilt tugged at him—he hadn’t meant to sound harsh. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
“No, you did, and that’s okay,” Alex took a deep breath, feeling the weight of unspoken truths pressing against her ribcage. “I’m not lying when I say I’m fine.” She saw Press about to counter, so she quickly added, “F is for feeling overwhelmed. I is for I’m not alright. N is for not being able to sleep, E for every night.” Alex couldn’t take credit for that, but when she heard the song ‘Fine by Kyle Hume’ she felt it in her soul.
Alex flashed a wide smile, masking the turmoil inside. “I’m very good at burying things and saying what needs to be said so people don’t freak out around me.”
“You don’t have to wear a mask around me,” Press’s tone softened, a gentleness threading through his words. He wished she’d let him in, just a little bit more.
“It’s not a mask,” Alex countered with a small smile, though her heart ached with the effort of keeping the walls up. “It’s a face.” She wrapped her arms around his and leaned on his shoulder, craving the comfort of his presence. “I’m never going to tell you the full story.”
Press didn’t move, didn’t look at her. He could feel the unspoken pain radiating from Alex, and all he wanted was to ease it. “Okay,” he said simply and sincerely, and that was good enough for Alex.
----------------------------------------------------------
Up in her room, Alex was getting ready for bed when Georgia came in. She was braiding her hair, trying to unwind from a long day – ironically, because in a way she was literally winding her hair.
“Who were you talking to outside?” Georgia asked, her voice curious.
“Matt Press,” Alex answered, deftly finishing the braid. “He’s a friend.”
“A friend who is a boy?” Georgia’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Are you going to be okay with that?”
Alex turned to face her mother, meeting her gaze head-on. “Yes, I’m okay. And…he kinda knows what happened. When he snuck up on me, I kinda freaked, and he figured it out.”
Georgia’s legs wobbled, and she had to sit down. The revelation was like a punch to the gut, causing a swirl of emotions—fear, relief, and a deep, aching sadness for her daughter’s pain.
Since Georgia was uncharacteristically silent, Alex continued, feeling a need to fill the heavy silence. “He didn’t react like I thought he would…he was supportive and asked for my permission to give me a hug. After everything, I really didn’t think I could get close to a boy, and I’m not saying that he and I will ever get close physically, I’m just saying…it’s good, Mom. I’m good.” There was a mix of hope and vulnerability in her voice, a quiet plea for understanding.
Georgia swallowed the words she wanted to say because, for the first time in a long time, she saw that Alex genuinely meant she was good. Instead, she put on a warm smile, feeling a surge of maternal pride and love, and kissed her daughter’s forehead. “I’m glad. After all, not all men…”
She didn’t need to finish her sentence. Alex responded instantly, the playful sparkle in her eyes returning. “Of course not. Gomez Addams would never.”
Georgia chuckled, a wave of relief washing over her. “My little Addams fanatic,” she said softly, her voice filled with affection. “Goodnight, Lexi,” she added before leaving the room.
Alex glanced at her new mirror and smiled – for the first time in a long time, it was a genuine one. The reflection staring back at her wasn’t forced or feigned, her smile was real and for the first time in a long time Alex thought she might actually sleep through the night because of it.
----------------------------------------------------------
At school the next day, Hunter hurried down the hall, weaving through the crowd until he caught sight of Alex. His heart pounded as he approached her, his steps quickening with urgency. He caught up with her and, panting slightly, blurted out, “Okay, so, I really need you to be cool and please, don’t hate me.”
Alex’s brows knitted in confusion. She couldn’t fathom what Hunter might have done to warrant such a plea. Trying to control the flood of anxious thoughts racing through her mind, she met his gaze and said, “I make no promises. What did you do?”
Hunter stopped abruptly, causing Alex to halt as well. He winced, his face a mask of regret as he confessed, “I may have told your guidance counselor that you’re incredibly smart and should be in AP classes.”
Alex felt her blood start to boil, the heat of anger rising from her chest to her cheeks. “You may have done it, or you did do it?” she demanded, emphasizing the words ‘may’ and ‘did’.
Hunter looked away, guilt etched on his face. “I did,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. He could see the fury blazing in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Alex, I just couldn’t let you throw away your chance at college and…” His words trailed off as Alex stormed away, fury in her stride. He raced after her, calling out, “Look, I’m sorry but…”
Alex whirled around, jabbing her finger into his chest as she advanced, forcing him to backpedal until he was pressed against the wall. “No buts. There are no buts in this situation. I trusted you, and you betrayed that trust. You had no right interfering in my life. Do you think I want to be in the same classes as my sister, constantly being compared to her? Now I’ll never hear the end of it from Ginny and my mom! I just wanted to stay under the radar, make my own choices, and you took that away from me!”
Hunter could see that her reaction was about more than just his betrayal. This outburst stemmed from deeper issues, from wounds he hadn’t known existed. “I’m sorry,” he repeated, feeling helpless.
“I don’t care,” Alex snapped, removing her finger from his chest and walking away, her anger leaving a tangible trail behind her. This time, Hunter didn’t follow.
Press entered the hall just in time to see Alex walking away from Hunter. Concerned, he approached his friend and asked, “What’s up?”
Hunter sighed heavily, the weight of his mistake pressing down on him. “I was assigned to tutor Alex and found out she’s a lot smarter than she lets on. I told her guidance counselor.”
Press looked at him like he was an idiot all whole doing his best not to get pissed. “Dude, Alex has her reasons.”
“I get that now,” Hunter replied, his remorse deepening. “She told me she only cared about English, but I didn’t realize there was more to it.” Granted, he didn’t know the whole story but with how Alex had spoken about being compared to Ginny, he could imagine.
Press shook his head at his friend. “You really screwed up, man. Good luck fixing it.”
“You’re not going to help me out here?” Hunter asked, hoping for some assistance.
“Nope,” Press said firmly, walking away.
Hunter exhaled deeply and headed to class, his mind racing with ways to make amends. He needed to fix things with Alex—not just because she was practically Press’s girlfriend and Ginny’s sister, but because he genuinely hoped they could become friends. He just hoped he could find a way.
----------------------------------------------------------
When Alex walked out of her guidance counselor’s office clutching her new AP class schedule, she felt a volcanic eruption of frustration bubbling within her. It took every ounce of her self-control not to tear the paper into confetti and scatter it across the hallway. She knew the inevitable confrontation with her mom awaited her—an interrogation about why she hadn’t been in these advanced classes from the start and why she’d coasted at a level far below her true capabilities. There was no escaping it now; Georgia wouldn’t let this slide. After giving Alex so much slack on bigger issues, her mom was sure to unleash her wrath this time.
As Alex stormed down the hall, she passed the lilac-painted wall where Ginny and her friends—Nora and Abby—stood, chatting. She hoped to glide by unnoticed, but Abby shot out her hand, gripping Alex’s wrist with a firm hold.
“Hey, Ginny’s twin, we’re going shopping, and you’re coming,” Abby said with a faux-sweet smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“Hey, the name’s Alex, and no, I’m not,” Alex retorted, yanking her hand free. She added with a sarcastic, high-pitched valley girl tone, “Thanks for the invite, though,” and flicked her hair dramatically before turning to walk away.
“You could have just said no,” Abby called after her, a hint of annoyance in her voice. “No need to be a bitch about it.”
That remark was the final straw. Alex stopped dead in her tracks, fury igniting in her eyes. She spun on her heels and marched back toward Abby, her expression murderous.
Seeing the brewing storm, Ginny quickly intervened, stepping between her sister and Abby. “Don’t ruin my chance at having friends, I beg of you,” she quietly pleaded, pushing Alex away.
“No promises,” Alex muttered, glaring daggers at Abby. She shot her the middle finger before continuing her march down the hall to her locker, where she needed to gather her textbooks for return. She’d be getting new ones the next day.
As Ginny rejoined Nora and Abby, Abby watched Alex’s retreating figure with a newfound respect. “She doesn’t take anyone’s crap. I’m totally in love with her,” she declared with a serious tone, then burst into laughter, with Nora and Ginny joining in soon after.
----------------------------------------------------------
Alex sat at the kitchen counter, her focus intently on the card game she was playing with Austin. The quiet hum of their playful competition was interrupted when Georgia and Ginny burst through the door. Ginny, radiating frustration, stormed straight up the stairs without a word. Georgia, visibly exasperated, entered the kitchen, shaking her head in disbelief. "I don’t know what I’m going to do with your sister,” she muttered, her voice heavy with fatigue.
Deciding to face the inevitable, Alex turned to Austin with a sigh. "We’ll play cards again later. I need to talk to Mom."
Austin, sensing the seriousness of the situation, nodded and began to gather the cards. "Okay," he said simply, before retreating up to his room.
Georgia, still releasing deep, weary sighs, set her water bottle down on the counter with a thud. She looked across at Alex, her expression a mix of concern and exasperation. "Please tell me you don’t have a crisis too. Or if you do, let it be a normal teenage crisis, like a zit that makes you feel like you’ll just die if you have to go to school tomorrow."
Alex couldn’t help but chuckle at the oddly specific example but quickly regained her composure. "With the exception of Art, I’m starting all AP classes tomorrow," she announced, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside.
Georgia blinked, clearly taken aback. She moved around the counter island and perched on the stool beside Alex, her eyes searching her daughter’s face. "You barely get C’s in any class other than English, so please explain how you’re now in AP classes?"
Alex stood up, making her way to the fridge. She grabbed a can of cola and opened it with a crisp snap. "You know I don’t believe in wasting my time," she said, taking a sip. "So I just don’t bother in the classes that I don’t care about." She left out the part about avoiding being in the same classes as Ginny, a detail she wasn’t ready to share.
Georgia slowly rose from her seat, the realization dawning on her. "So this whole time—for years—you’ve been pretending not to be as smart as you are?" She didn’t wait for a response. "Why the hell would you do that, Lexi? And don’t give me that ‘oh, I just don’t care’ crap." She pointed a finger at Alex, her frustration boiling over. "You fooled me good, baby girl, and I don’t appreciate that. Once I figure out how to deal with everything else that’s going on, we will be having more of a conversation about this." With that, Georgia turned and left the kitchen, her footsteps echoing down the hall.
Alex exhaled a long breath, taking another sip of her soda. "Yep, that pretty much went the way I thought it would," she muttered to herself, the weight of the confrontation settling heavily on her shoulders.
With the tension between her and her mom still hanging in the air, Alex planned to retreat to her room for some much-needed solitude. That was the plan until a sudden knock at the front door made her spin around on her heels. She opened it to find Hunter standing there, a hesitant smile on his face.
“Ginny’s upstairs, I’ll go get her,” Alex said automatically, ready to dash away.
“Actually, I’m here for you,” Hunter interjected quickly before she could leave.
“Why? You have more decisions to make about my life?” Alex retorted, raising an eyebrow as she sipped her soda. She stepped outside, closing the door behind her.
“I deserve that,” Hunter admitted, then handed her a paper bag from the Wellsbury bookstore. “This is for you.”
Alex tapped her soda can thoughtfully. “Is this a bribe for my forgiveness?”
“Absolutely,” Hunter replied without missing a beat.
Alex chuckled, handing him her soda can. She took the bag from him and pulled out a compilation book of cartoons of the Addams Family by Charles Addams. Her eyes lit up with excitement. “Oh my deity of your choosing, this is amazing!” She laughed, flipping through the pages before looking back at Hunter. “How did you know I loved the Addams Family?”
Hunter shrugged, a smile tugging at his lips. “Your bag is covered with Addams Family-themed patches. I figured this would be a safe bet.” His eyes were hopeful. “Are we good?”
Alex closed the book, placing it back into the paper bag. She took her soda can from him and narrowed her eyes, a smile playing on her lips. “You’re lucky I love a good bribe.” She grinned, and he smiled along with her.
“Good, I’m glad. I really want us to be friends,” Hunter said earnestly.
Alex’s immediate response was blunt. “Right – not getting along with your friend’s friend and the girl you like’s sister probably wouldn’t bode well for you.”
“Not just that,” Hunter explained, “I think you’re cool and want to be your friend, just because.”
“A non-ulterior motive friend, eh? I’m good with that.” Alex lifted the bag. “Thank you for this. See you in class.”
Hunter smiled and waved as she went back inside the house. He walked back to his car parked down the street and got in, looking at Press who was sitting in the passenger seat. “You were right, she loved the book.”
“Told you,” Press replied, not looking away from his phone.
“I thought you weren’t going to help me though? Why did you give me the book?” Hunter asked, still puzzled.
“I wasn’t helping you, I was helping her,” Press replied seriously. “She could use you as a friend.”
Hunter could have easily teased Press for being sentimental, but he chose not to. Instead, he simply said, “I owe you one.”
“I aim to collect,” Press responded, his tone leaving no room for doubt. He had given Hunter the book because he wanted Alex to feel better and for her and Hunter to be friends. Press was willing to do anything to make Alex happy and he intended to see it through.

rue bennett, ginny miller, and lack of nuanced perception in how mental illness in black women works
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think the tragedy of euphoria (if i had to list just one) is partially the fandom’s lack of understanding of rue, leslie, and gia…cultural attitudes in the black community have a lot to do w why leslie acts the way she does. and then race is never mentioned bc sam levinson doesn’t comprehend the nuances of race and mental health in the black community.
he can comprehend addiction, but nothing like the fact rue being a black woman will have her heavily stigmatized by the black community as well as the predominantly white one she lives in as her “proving black stereotypes.”
he can comprehend addiction, but nothing like the fact rue being a black woman will have her heavily stigmatized by the black community as well as the predominantly white one she lives in as her “proving black stereotypes.”
that just hits a lot harder knowing in the beginning of s1, she has zero hope and so it feels very hollow when lexi encourages her sobriety, and again in s2 from jules when she’s going thru withdrawals. she is tired of being the scapegoat by everyone around her, even if they have valid reasons for wanting her to get clean and she is making decisions that harm others. and she feels during the s2 interaction with cassie that she is being pitied, simply cannot take it anymore, and retaliates bc she is just so tired of everyone around her being believed to be innocent and pure when they are not, and her being expected to be even in the throes of addiction and it being perceived as “not her.”
bc in a sense, rue is not her addiction. however, she’s lived with it so long that she is used to it, practically revels in the deviant label her entire schools mocks her with, and thus feels like she cannot leave. jules conflicts with this, because she cares for rue as a friend and romantically but is not going to associate with her if she continues. but even when she is sober, people like nate are shit talking her efforts to stay clean when they simply have no idea what she’s gone through, yet jules is proud of her despite rue finding it hard to stay clean. cassie only does the same as nate because she needs a defense for having gotten with him but not taking accountability for how that hurt maddy, even if she was right rue’s friendship with lexi was incredibly toxic and transactional. the issue here is everyone has valid points abt rue except for nate, but no one is seeing the nuances of her situation. it’s either “she’s good because she’s clean” or “she’s bad because she’s not” and jules seemed to be the only one blurring that line because she’s dealt with addiction in her family before.
leslie kind of reminds me of my mom in that she did help me thru mental issues, but it was a very “deviant” thing to do bc of how in most of black american society, racism is seen as something you need to be “stronger” than and thus stronger than any other obstacle. so realistically, some black ppl in rue’s extended family might actually ridicule her or attribute her addiction to personal flaws or solely her father’s death. rue is an atheist, but also her mother was this religious church girl in her youth and rue is seen in church settings during rehab. there’s a possibility leslie didn’t even tell others abt rue’s hospitalizations or if she did and word got around, she had to fabricate some sort of lie so rue would not be judged for her addiction.
and ppl perceive leslie as “overreacting” as they do gia and that’s very suspicious to me. idk like, as compared to ginny and georgia ginny has severe depression and georgia is like, praised for a lot of the manipulative shit she says to ginny when that’s a huge contribution to her mental issues not being resolved for as long as they were in the first place. i personally think a lot of the g&g fandom missed the point of the show—georgia is not perfect. loving your kids does not mean they don’t get to feel traumatized when you admit to murdering their step father. generational trauma is a thing and you cannot love someone into not acknowledging or feeling their extent of their own.
ginny and georgia somewhat makes that distinction in the therapy sessions by explaining bc georgia is white there is a lot of experiences she cant understand ginny has, so she cant just invalidate them. however the fandom is so corny and anti black that they will compare ginny’s trauma to georgia’s to undermine her. and then praise georgia for doing what she should’ve done as a parent which is support ginny and complain how ginny should be “more grateful to have her.” and say the same abt her father. that truly just paints an insidious lack of compassion for black women dealing w/ mental health issues. bc abby and marcus, dealing with their own, have quite never been given such animosity for having mental issues, they’ve actually been given much more sympathy.

am i brave enough to post about the final scene of Heartstopper? no. i’m going to anyways.
the frank discussions of mental illness are one of the many reasons i am so drawn to heartstopper. everything from anxiety to Charlie’s ED. they talk about it. and for the most part, they talk about it in a healthy way. the only other form of media i’ve seen with explicit mentions of self harm was Ginny and Georgia and that was awful. 10/10 would not recommend.
now, there’s no “right way” to respond to someone who admits to you that they hurt themselves. that fact is incredibly shocking and can be heartbreaking especially if you care about that person. it feels like a dark secret that you shouldn’t be keeping. and it’s SO scary. for most people the thought of deliberately hurting oneself isn’t something they can comprehend.
it’s okay if you respond badly. i get it. but the way Nick responds to Charlie’s confession was damn near perfect. no “don’t do it anymore uwu” or “let me kiss your scars rawr xd.” he didn’t explode and yell at Charlie or threaten to put him in a psych hospital. he simply told Charlie to promise to tell him if he ever felt like that again. HE DOESNT EVEN ASK CHARLIE TO STOP HE JUST ASKED TO TELL HIM IF HE FEELS THAT BAD AGAIN and later in the series, Vol5, where things are heating up a bit and charlie admits he doesn’t want to take his shirt off. nick doesn’t groan and turn the lights off. he understands!!! that this is real!!! and that Charlie isn’t actively trying to off himself!!!
so much of the time self harm is immediately connected to suicidal ideations, which is fair. we never hear about the self harm. we hear about what happens at the end. but a lot of the time it’s not. it’s like a bug bite that you can’t help but itch. and you KNOW it’ll heal if you stop scratching it, but it’s so goddamn itchy, why should you stop?
all of this to say, i would like to destigmatize self harm while also providing better help to those who need it. and find the separation between SH to scratch the itch and SH to make that permanent decision.
i’m not asking anyone’s reaction to be perfect, but i’m asking you to stop making the situation about yourself. it’s so scary, i know, and i know you want to help, but most of the time, it’s not something you can help with.
i got off track, but i hope you get the gist. i really love heartstopper. i love diversity that isn’t forced. i love representation for the things most people are afraid to talk about.

I think I’m sort of in the middle? Taylor knows the amount of hate her exes get when she does these things, it’s not like she’s unaware of her “power”. So in situations like this, and other stuff like the Ginny and Georgia tweet, it does feel like she wants her fans to actively hate on people. But at the same time, she’s built her whole career on sharing her experiences with people and that’s why people relate so much to her. She’s dialed that back so much since the earlier days, she doesn’t do the secret messages anymore. I saw a video the other day showing that debut had “to all the boys who thought they could break my heart, guess what? Here are 14 songs written about you. HA.”. She’s not doing that anymore, probably because she’s a 34 year old woman, but still. She’s clearly dialed that back and it doesn’t look like she’s actively trying to attack anyone. I don’t know where the line is between sharing your story and sending your fans to undeservingly attack your ex. I would also like to add that people exaggerated how good Joe was, he had to be the best at literally everything. If Joe didn’t complain about that, he can’t complain about people making him out to be worse than he actually is. It also makes sense that when Taylor put him on such a high pedestal (again, higher than he should’ve probably been), and then fans put him on an even higher one (Taylor mentioned many problems even in the good songs that I feel fans ignored), that the fall from it would be even bigger. Fans talk about him as if he betrayed them. They’re mad at him because they thought he was perfect and, since Taylor can do no wrong, they have to blame him for anything and everything that could have gone wrong. I think Taylor is at fault for making her fan base what it is, but she also couldn’t have possible known, as a petty 16 year old, that it would ever come to this. So idk, there are some things she might be able to do, but I don’t think they would help that much
I agree with literally EVERYTHING you’ve said (except that there are things she can do bc idk what those would be lol). The reason I was personally so invested in T/J is the songs NEVER made him - or her - out to be perfect and it felt like such a real relationship that was so wonderfully open to us. She made it very clear IN THE SONGS that he’s moody, that he gets cold sometimes and pulls away, that he can be a little sanctimonious and that he can be a little flirtatious with other girls but it never goes further than that. That’s all in the lyrics. And those aren’t great qualities but like come on, you’re never gonna find someone perfect and for 6.5 years-ish it worked. She also made it clear that she’s moody and temperamental and overreacts to shit, that she wants to be acknowledged for the goddess that she is (which imo she is but like I see why when you’re living with her you wouldn’t necessarily feel that way every day), that she takes a lot of things super personally, that she’s petty and a lil basic and that she’s got a whole host of other issues. That’s ALL like FROM HER LYRICS. That’s WHY I was invested in that relationship. Because it was the first time I heard an artist in real time speak through something that was weird and complex and flawed but obviously beautiful??? And I did kinda feel like a friend lol ngl because she shared so much. It almost felt like my friend K’s relationship (the one that kinda set me up with my now bf like she introduced us not expecting a romantic connection but lol neither were we - she was just like “I know you two would have fun together because you’re so similar”) where I constantly think they’re about to break up but I also wouldn’t be shocked if they outlast my bf and me because we… have our own cockroaches in our heads and shit lol and we’re both very temperamental people and like we say this is forever (hence the bracelets) but like what is forever lol yk? He’s tried forever before and failed and I’m personally not willing to commit to that.
fans chose to ignore the lyrics and focus on her telling sessioners he’s the perfect boyfriend which like… should remind fans that sessioners aren’t her friends lol. No one is perfect. She wasn’t claiming he is in the music - which imo is very honest from her POV and that’s why *I* love her. She obviously wasn’t going around claiming that to her friends (“I talk shit with my friends”). But like when she met with randoms wtf else do you want her to say??? Do you meet random people and tell them like “my partner is ok for the most part like I’ll stay but he/she pisses me off sometimes”?
as for connecting all this to teen Taylor idk what you expect lol like do u want a teenage girl to like… not hate her exes??? Especially ones who cheated on her (Samx6) or who moved on really quick (not domestic violence Drew)?? Like obvi she was pissed off and she didn’t expect it to get to… this when she was lol.
but yeah I agree with your thesis and like idk Swifties are weird and if you listen to the music and like apply it to your life she makes the best music in the world imo. I’m not as invested in T/TK as T/J yet because I don’t have the music. It’s the music that really makes me love her. If you don’t love her music or don’t understand it and just like harass her exes like that’s ok the internet is a wild place go ahead but idk if you’re a fan of the music/artist or you’re just a weird person on the internet (of whom there are many).

Okay so like, I’ve been seeing some Ginny and Georgia discourse dissing Ginny for what she did to Georgia throughout the series, and while I actually don’t like Ginny I kinda wanna defend her here.
I feel like a lot of Ginny and Georgia is from Georgia’s perspective. Not necessarily on purpose but because the series is from an omnipresent pov and Georgia knows more of what’s happening than Ginny. It’s kinda Georgia and Ginny’s whole character tension that Georgia doesn’t tell Ginny anything.
Near the beginning of the story all Ginny knows is that her mother is a murderer. That she killed her rich husband with no sympathy. And that she’s left every single one of her other partners with a similar lack of sympathy. And now (!) she has started flirting with another rich man. What is her mother gonna do next? Ginny has been sheltered from the truth of all of her mothers past relationships. All she has seen is her mother’s reaction to abuse, not the abuse itself. Ginny knows her mother loves her, but she also knows that she does bad things with seemingly no reason. Of course this would be heartbreaking and horrifying. As Georgia and apple pie (you know who I’m referring to) begin to get engaged, all Ginny knows is that the last time Georgia had a whirlwind romance she killed the guy and stole his fortune like some fairytale witch. She’s angry. She feels powerless to stop her mothers scheme. Not to mention all the other daddy issues going on.
None of this is to say that Ginny had a right to Georgia’s past, but I think believing a teenager should blindly trust their mother is dumb. Also, I think Ginny’s entire character arc is plagued by her lack of information. You can’t have a child in a dangerous situation but just refuse to tell them. They will still know. Your behaviour will rub off on them. The abusive behaviour will rub off on them. By sheltering a child from the truth of the matter, and refusing to tell them once they grow up, Georgia essentially denies Ginny the chance to process things as they happened. And so, she processes them unhealthily. Her mother is evil and so what does that make her? Does she inherit the sin? Should she have done something? Is she responsible?
Georgia’s desire to protect Ginny was beautiful and really fucking hard, and it’s certainly better than what her Georgia’s mother did, but you can’t really protect a child from the trauma of an abusive household. You can mask what is causing the trauma, but they take it on. They mirror behaviour. And if you refuse to communicate with them about it once they get older, they’re gonna think they’re flawed for no reason. They’re traumatised but in their head, they didn’t experience anything. So why are they so messed up? There must be something wrong with them!
I think this is also part of the lack of sympathy for Ginny. Georgia does so many fucked up things but she’s been through hell so we forgive her. Except kid Ginny was coming through hell with her, she just wasn’t adult enough to process it. She was just protected from the truth of the hell. But that doesn’t mean she wasn’t effected. You can tell someone a bed of spikes is actually a bed of unicorn hairs but it’s gonna hurt just as much when you step on it.

i was so worried bc netflix is just cancelling shit left and right for no reason for a while now and also specially bc if something gets to a 3rd season it gets so much more expensive for them to produce so they just either cancel it, sabotage it so they have to cancel it or give it a renewal almost by force but do everything so that everyone knows they didn’t want to (*cough* UA *cough*) but they just renewed ginny & georgia for 2 more seasons so i can rest easy for now lol sometimes we CAN have shit in detroit.....

The 12 TV Couples We Really Wanted (But Didn’t Get) in 2023
Team TVLineDecember 14, 2023 7:00 am
Tumblr media
Courtesy of NBC, Netflix, Apple TV+none
As 2023 comes to an end and we reflect on the past year in television, we’ve realized something: we don’t like not getting our way. For that very reason, we’ve decided to compile a list of the couples we really wanted this year, even if the TV gods decided to keep them apart.
And let’s be clear, we’re defining a “couple” as two people who have agreed to define their relationship as such. Some of the duos on our list have kissed, and some have done considerably more than that, but they failed to make it official. DTR-ing is very important here, people.
And while we’re confident that some of these shows will eventually give us the couplings we want, our list also includes a few characters whose shows won’t be resuming in the new year, leaving us to wonder what could have been. Consider us haunted for life.
Read on for a breakdown of 12 TV we couples we wanted (but sadly didn’t get) in 2023, then drop a comment with your own additions to the list. Which pairs from your favorite shows are you hoping will finally get serious in 2024?
01
Janine and Gregory, Abbott Elementary
Photo : Courtesy of ABC
The elementary teachers are made for each other, and their failed relationships with other people in Season 2 only further confirmed that there’s something truly special about Janine and Gregory’s bond. And honestly, we don’t know how Janine didn’t just dissolve into a puddle when Gregory told her, “I take all of your recommendations seriously. I want to know why you like stuff.” Swoon!
02
Jack and Sadie, American Auto
Photo : Courtesy of NBC
Just when the Payne Motors exec decided to throw caution to the wind and agree to a real date with the co-worker for whom she was obviously made (and vice-versa), NBC threw cold water on the would-be couple as well as our hopes for them in the form of a cancellation notice.
03
Georgia and Joe, Ginny & Georgia
Photo : Courtesy of Netflix
We were sure that Joe’s slow realization of the significant past connection – not to mention, the palpable chemistry – he and Georgia share would finally inch the pair towards each other in Season 2. Alas, she married someone else, but we’ve got our eye on the long game when it comes to these two.
04
Benson and Stabler, Law & Order: SVU and Organized Crime
Photo : Courtesy of NBC
‘Shippers have wanted Capt. Benson and Det. Stabler together for literal decades, and it seemed like maybe the show’s writers were on board this year. But despite some heavy flirting and heavier conversations about their feelings, we were left having to “Liv. Laugh. Love.” our way on to the next season.
05
Lee and Keiko, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters
Photo : 'Monarch' Episode 6 (Courtesy of Apple TV+)
Since their very first appearance in the series premiere’s 1959 flashback — which hinted at Bill having ended up with the “right woman,” Keiko, that Lee didn’t — we have wondered, “Wait, what all transpired with this triangle of adventurers…?” Add in everything that happens in Episode 6 (streaming Dec. 15 on Apple TV+) and, well, our interest grew Titan-ic!
06
Nick and George, Nancy Drew
Photo : Courtesy of The CW
Blame it on final season-induced nostalgia if you want, but we were rooting for George and Nick to get back together before Nancy Drew came to a close. Don’t get us wrong, their respective new partners suit them in unique ways, but we were invested in this couple prior to their breakup. Remember when they almost got married?!
07
Maeve and Otis, Sex Education
Photo : Courtesy of Netflix
Sure, Sex Education’s will-they-won’t-they it couple may have kissed and even had sex, but the series took far too long to get them together(-ish), before sending Maeve off to the States for school. By the time she returned, the couple’s moment seemed to have passed and in the end, they parted ways for good without ever experiencing the waves of a real relationship.
08
Spock and Chapel, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Photo : Paramount+ screenshot
The sizzling chemistry between the Vulcan science officer and the human nurse is absolutely out of this world, and it only got hotter in Season 2, with Spock gallantly using CPR when Chapel was barely clinging to life in the premiere. They even gave into their feelings after Spock was temporarily turned into a human — and shared a kiss! — but alas, Chapel’s decision to leave the Enterprise to take a prestigious fellowship meant that our dreams were dashed for now. Sigh.
09
Gerri and Roman, Succession
Photo : Courtesy of HBO
We knew these two were never destined for a traditional romance, something that didn’t really exist on HBO’s corporate drama. But we at least hoped they’d find their way back to the delightfully twisted, sorta-weird-sorta-hot situationship they developed in the show’s first three seasons, which could have softened the blow of Roman’s emotional implosion in Season 4. Alas, Roman was left to drink that series finale martini alone.
10
Roy and Jamie, Ted Lasso
Photo : Courtesy of Apple TV+
The increasingly profound bond between AFC Richmond’s former foes was both a complete surprise and such an appealing plot development that we can’t believe we didn’t ‘ship these two from the start. With all due respect to Roy and Keeley’s ill-fated fling, we found ourselves more invested in Roy and Jamie going the beyond-platonic route, after a season of meaningful interactions — Uncle’s Day is ourRoman Empire — that only scratched the surface of what these guys have come to mean to each other. But the finale went a different way, instead pitting Roy and Jamie against each other (?) in a fistfight for Keeley’s love (?!) and then asking her to choose between them (?!?). Well, we’ll always have Amsterdam.
11
Daryl and Isabelle, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
Photo : Courtesy of AMC
Maybe it’s for the best that the fifth Walking Dead spinoff didn’t capitalize on the chemistry that we all some of us saw developing between young Laurent’s de-facto parent figures. Viewers didn’t seem to agree that Norman Reedus and Clémence Poésy’s characters felt more for one another than mere friendship.
12
Kat and Elliot, The Way Home
Photo : Courtesy of Hallmark Channel
Redemption for the loyal high school best friend who stood by while Kat fell for and married the wrong guy! When Kat returned home after her divorce, her former bestie-turned-adorably handsome teacher Elliot was not only there for her, but also provided guidance, in the present and past, when her teenage daughter discovered a time-traveling pond. That’s what we call a good guy. Plus, that first kiss? Fire! Sadly, the complications of time travel led Elliot to decide he needs to forge his own path forward.

Ginny is allowed to be a bratty teenager.
Virgina *Ginny* Miller from Ginny and Georgia gets a lot of hate. Yes, some of it is warranted however she is a 16-year-old girl. I am tired of seeing her be hated on for her reactions to things that most people would not react well to at all. Let's take a look at things from her point of view for a moment. Ginny was born under unfortunate circumstances, she was born to a homeless 15-year-old teen mom living in poverty, she had the chance to have a decent childhood as in she would live with her grandparents and grow up in a stable home but nope Georgia had to pack up her things and take her daughter with her. Her mom would pack up and leave anytime things got hard where Ginny never was able to stay in one place long enough to make a friend. This happened until she moved to Wellsbury Massachusetts. Life is going pretty well until Ginny finds out some hard truths about her mom now grant it Ginny is reacting to what she found out without knowing the whole story which isn't abnormal. What she found out about her mom, she is a murderer, a thief, and Georgia took out credit cards in Ginny and Austin's name. Yes, Georgia had good reasons for all of the things she did, she murdered first two husbands because they sexually harassed/abused her and her daughter, she became a thief to survive, and she took out credit cards and framed Gil who was already embezzling money one to get rid of him for being abusive and two so she could buy them a place to live. However, in the process she basically ruined Ginny's credit before she is even old enough to get a credit card. However, Ginny not having the full story is struggling to deal with this. The other thing Ginny struggles with is confiding in her mother with anything Georgia will have these extreme reactions, like when a little boy pushed Ginny off her bike, all Ginny wanted was a hug and the boy to receive proper consequences for his actions and what did Georgia do, she went and cut the breaks on his bike. She told Georgia about her microagressive racist teacher. Most parents would call the school and discuss the situation, but nope not Georgia she goes to the school and puts alcohol in his desk. There are more examples of Georgia having extreme reactions to things, but I can't remember them all at the moment. These extreme reactions to things are why Ginny felt safe enough to tell Zion her father that she struggles with self-harm. Zion's reaction, is to cry and comfort his daughter, tell Georgia to figure out a way to help Ginny but he doesn't because she begs him not to. He however decides to put Ginny in therapy and not only that he finds her a biracial therapist. This is another reason that the relationship between Ginny and Georgia is complicated. Ginny is a biracial with a white mom. Yes, Georgia is a great mom and will go through extreme lengths to protect her daughter but as a white woman she has blind spots. For example, she dressed as Scarlett O'Hara a very racist figure. In Georgia's mind she was just a woman who dressed pretty and probably did it because she is proud to be from down south. Too Ginny she saw her mom dress up as a racist figure. Race issues are hard for Georgia to understand as a privileged white woman. Now before people jump down my throat for me calling Georgia a privileged white woman, I don't mean she didn't struggle because trust me she had plenty of struggles, but I just mean is that her none of her struggle came because she was white. She also doesn't grasp that her half black would not be able to get away with half of the crimes she committed. Another reason that Ginny didn't feel comfortable telling her mom about therapy or self-harm is because Georgia is constantly, violating her daughter’s boundaries. Georgia smokes with her daughter’s boyfriends, reads Ginny’s therapy journal without permission, takes a credit card out in her name basically ruining Ginny’s chances of getting a credit card for herself when she is older, and she basically tackled Ginny when she found about her burning herself. On top of that she doesn’t even ask Ginny to if she can sit in on a therapy session she just barges right in and basically makes the session about herself. I am in no means trying to justify Ginny’s actions, but her reactions aren’t unreasonable or unrealistic. All of these things I mentioned are why Ginny needs therapy. Given what Georgia has been through she needs therapy as well. As Ginny matures, she will understand her mom and be less judgmental towards her mom. She truly appreciates her mom but as she put, she is allowed to feel hurt and be upset about stuff that was hard for her.

georgia & any :: @totouchthcstars
for the longest time, it had been georgia and ginny. ginny and georgia. then, austin was added into the mix. it was the three of them against the world. now, here in sydney, she didn’t have her children. life was different. she thought that it’d be simple, but it wasn’t. it was different in a bad way. she didn’t have anybody she could look after and make sure that she had a reason to wake up every morning.
that afternoon for lunch, she stood, just waiting to be seated. she’d been standing there for like five or ten minutes, but to her it felt like an hour. “hey you!” she called out, her accent thick. “do you work here? i’ve been waiting for like an hour for a table. my lunch break is only half an hour.” she complained, huffing. “i desperately need a drink,” she mumbled more to herself. she didn’t even know if they’d worked there, but she was just trying to get service.

the way the g&g fandom on tumblr is superior to the one on tiktok bc nuance actually exists here so no one here hates ginny who literally made a lot of awful mistakes but also she’s going through a lot of trauma and mental issues all on her own with zero support from her parents for so long and is crying out to her mother who wants her to feel in a way most palatable each time her life is uprooted.
i’ve literally been that “annoying” and “self centered” teenager who didn’t make the best choices too bc my parents made a lot of decisions in my life “for me” and in that haze was not being given proper emotional support when i so much as showed any negative emotion—often what georgia does to ginny. it has gotten to the point where she is severely depressed so i’m starting to think ppl are just anti black if they think ginny is completely overreacting and her trauma “is not that bad” but then want complete sympathy for georgias
also as a parent it’s literally manipulative to tell your child “you cannot feel xyz look at what u sacrificed for you” georgia is often manipulative and controlling of ginny’s feelings and is part of reason she feels so unsupported emotionally. period. i hate how the tiktok fandom worships everything georgia does as if the consequences of it on ginny’s mental health suddenly don’t matter it’s called GINNY and georgia.
it’s possible to be sympathetic to georgia’s trauma and realize she still has area to cover w the trauma she has caused ginny without knowing it. ginny has suffered what my therapist refers to as “little traumas,” each significant on their own but boiling over into something increasingly harder to handle that contributed to her depression. which she has been handling on her own, each of those little traumas such as the constant moves and secrecy her mother constantly denying ginny’s upset of.
imagine being a child and not allowed to have any sort of negative emotion bc it makes your parent feel bad. that’s on the parent. so therefore georgia IS responsible for how she treats ginny and the guilt tripping and emotional controlling gets incredibly toxic.

reasons why you should watch ginny and georgia
first off, let me say, this is not a cheap gilmore girls
when this show was announced, many people complained that we didn’t need another gilmore girls and that this show shouldnt even try to compare. and this is fair, gilmore girls is such a unique show that nothing can truly replicate its banter and dialogue, but let me assure you, nothing about this is like gilmore girls. of course, i know, i know, the show is based around a teenage mom and a fifteen year old daughter, but after that, there are no similarities.
before i get more into the actual show, let me talk about some tiny things that i loved
the lighting
on my first watch through, i noticed how as the show progressed and (ahem) changed, the lighting got physically darker.
the show starts out very “the good place,” in its lighting, all bright and sunny and happy, but as the show went down, all the scenes were very “buffy the vampire slayer,” were almost every shot was dark and beautiful. it truly showcased how the show takes a turn for the ~darker~
the smaller details
i’m a sucker for references that mean nothing when you first watch but EVERYTHING on a rewatch. and let me just say, THIS IS SUCH A HEAVILY DETAILED SHOW??? there’s parallels (that i’ll get into in another post) from the very first episode to the last episode.
for a show where new info keeps flying out at you, it’s incredibly foreshadowed.
the soundtrack
it’s just incredible
next, the characters
some of the best parts of this show are the characters and how they are all unique and complex in their personalities and how they interact with eachother.
now, not all of the characters are perfect, *cough cough stoner boy marcus* but i was shocked at how none of the other charectars fit into a box
the romance
what would a teen netflix drama be without romance? well don’t fucking worry, because there’s romance.
and with romance, drama follows right behind.
there are love triangles, multiple love interests for one goddamned charectar (like chill tf out pls is 2 not enough?? now you need 3??), sexual tension and lesbians
most of the romance in this show is painfully highschool and have OFF THE CHARTS CHEMISTRY,
if you love love, then you’re going to love this
the best part-
this show is so fast paced, there are multiple plots going on in every episode and it stays upbeat which is a GODSEND for people like me who get distracted easily.
this show was keeping me hooked and invested until long past the last episode.
if you can’t sit through a show, than this is PERFECT for you
the actual message
i’m gonna be honest, this show is not what you expect it to be but past all the crazy shit, it deals a lot with learning where or who “home” is to you, and the idea that family is who you make it
my favorite part
i had no idea where this show was going. not even at the end.
the back faded to credits and i was SCREAMING.
this show is not what you expect it to be and it will take turns you didn’t expect
im done, i’m done
if you got this far, i am in love with you,
long story short, it’s a good show that wasn’t advertised as much by netflix and it doesn’t have nearly as much recognition as it should.

Ok so I just binge watched Ginny and Georgia so here's a lot of unrequested opinions. This is just my point of view so no need to get angry. Also I apologize for the english, it's not my first language.
• Max and Abby are very overrated
• I didn't really like Max since the beginning but I grew to not hate her until the thing with Marcus and Ginny. She's annoying, needy and overly dramatic for absolutely no reason. The kind of person who thinks the world is their stage.
• Mang's friendship is Toxic AF.
• Why the fuck does everyone care so much about their siblings sleeping with friends? Am I the only one not quite getting the reason? I get that Ginny lied to Max and everything but it just doesn't seem stuff over which I would end a friendship and never talk to someone again. Maybe I'm just built different.
• Georgia omg. I have mixed feelings 'cause she's such a badass but still I can't stan her 'cause too often I don't get her actions and don't approve of her methods. She's still a very very interesting character and she kind of carries the whole show for now. Plus her backstory is just so messed up and interesting to watch.
• Paul is ok I guess. I just can't feel it between him and Georgia tho. And getting married so fast? How long has he known her? Wtf. Great proposal tho.
• Uhm love Zion and his relationship with Ginny awww
• Ginny is kind of underrated. Still, I very often question her decisions and I feel like she needs to stand up to her friends more. I mean it's not like if you have friends you're supposed to do everything they do. Idk. She's also been a real bitch to Georgia. But I can't really blame her for that 'cause her situation is more than screwed up.
• I love love love Joe and can't wait to see more of him and his connection with Georgia.
• I feel like the first episodes were better than the last ones.
• The writer is trying to convey many topics and storylines (some pretty frivolous and others very deep and dark) together and I don't know about that really. It makes you struggle to want some good for the characters. Idk about the story in its entirety. Maybe it would have been better to concentrate on one side of it and lose the rest. It kind of feels like it's two different stories forced together sometimes. You aren't able to focus seriously on the useless drama shit that you're reminded how many important and serious matters there are at hand. Idk.
• At least we can all agree that Marcus> Hunter. I didn't know about him at first. The way he treated Padma and everything just ugh. But still, he's just a kid and he grew as person and character throughout this whole season so kudos to him.
• Love Nick how can you not. Avril Vagine stan. Deserves more screen time.
• This show has many things of Gilmore girls but goes somewhere else entirely.
• I guess that's it? Idk I'll reblog if there's something else.

The second Violet woke up the day after her date with Luke, her phone started ringing. Glancing down at the screen, Carrie’s picture smiled back at her. Violet chuckled, not surprised that the girl was FaceTiming her at this moment and immediately picked up.
Before Violet could even greet her best friend, the blonde girl attacked her with the important question. “How was it? Tell me everything!”
Violet chuckled as she sat down on her bed with the phone angled in front of her. “It was so amazing! He took me to this fancy Italian restaurant called “Figurati Italia”, which I’m pretty sure means “Imagine Italy”.” She sounded dreamy and resembled a lovesick puppy. It scared Carrie a little as the girl droned on and on about how chivalrous and amazing Luke had been on the date.
“He did say something about a blind date you guys had set us up on…” Violet continued after minutes of dream-talk about the date. “What’s that about?”
Carrie swallowed harshly. Being reminded of that mistake made the guilt well up in her stomach. “That was – uhm…” She searched her brain for the right words. “Violet – other Violet – was so in love with Luke and the boys knew Luke had a minor crush on Violet too, or at least they thought he did. So, we set them up on a date, before the whole Sunset Curve thing blew up. When they realized what we had done, Luke kinda laughed in her face and told her he’d never date her…”
Violet’s jaw dropped. “What an asshole!” she snarled. “And you let me go out with him?!”
“I’m sorry, Vi! But this is different, this is – this is to get you back!”
Violet chuckled, her second of anger switching out into worry. “And what if that’s not how we get me back?”
“Then we’re just gonna have to find another way and in the meanwhile, get you used to this universe?” Carrie suggested. Her stomach felt weird in that moment, like a bad omen, a foreboding that something terrible was going to happen.
The brunette girl nodded her head slowly, trying to wrap her mind around the idea of being here. Forever. She wasn’t the Violet that used to live here. She was nothing like her. Or at least, she didn’t think she was, judging from the stories she’d heard. People would notice, at some point that she wasn’t who they knew her to be. There had to be a way to mislead them. To learn to be the Violet they knew.
“Do you know if Violet had some sort of diary? Just so I can get a sense of what she was like, how her brain worked and stuff?”
Carrie pondered over it for a moment. “She did have this songbook she used to write her songs and thoughts into? I believe she hid it in her nightstand.”
Violet immediately dove towards the white nightstand and opened the first drawer, finding a bright blue fake leather notebook with ‘VGD’ embossed in gold on the front.
“I found it…”
Curiosity rose within both girls. Carrie had never been allowed to look into that unless it was a song Violet was willing to share. Though she knew there was more in there than she was allowed to see. Violet’s biggest secrets, her deepest thoughts. They were all stored in there and now, the girls were granted a free pass into Violet’s mind.
“What’s in it?” Carrie asked.
“Songs, mostly,” Violet replied as she browsed through the notebook. She halted at a song titled ‘Homesick’ and as her eyes scanned the lyrics, she could feel every single feeling her parallel self was feeling in that moment. Her eyes halted at the date that was scribbled at the very top of the page. “Care… Around what time did you set her up with Luke on that blind date?”
“Uhm…” Carrie hummed as she pondered about the question. “I’d say around March 2018 or something.”
Violet’s heart dropped. “Huh…”
“What?” Carrie asked.
“I think Violet may have written a song about him,” she mumbled, but Carrie heard her, loud and clear. “It’s kinda heartbreaking…” Her fingers traced over the stains of run-out ink. Violet had been crying while writing this song. “Luke’s an asshole…”
“That’s no news,” Carrie scoffed.
Violet stared at the paper while the gears in her brain started doing their work. “He needs to pay for what he did… He needs to pay for breaking that poor girl’s heart.”
“And how are you gonna do that? He’s so self-absorbed and obsessed with his fame, he won’t even notice you’re trying to make him pay for what he did…” Carrie reasoned, but to no avail. Violet was already plotting the perfect scheme in her mind.
“Vivi,” her mother walking into her room made her snap out of her train of thought. “Can you go to the store for me, please? I forgot the feta cheese for dinner tonight.”
Violet rolled her eyes at her mother. “Of course, ma, I’ll go in a minute.”
“Don’t call me ‘ma’,” her mother frowned. “And get outta bed, it’s past noon!”
The girl managed a smile. “Sorry, mom. I’ll go in a minute.”
Her mother shot her a smile before turning on her heel and leaving her daughter’s bedroom, letting Violet and Carrie to their conversation.
“I hear there’s a super cute new bag boy in the store around the corner,” Carrie informed with a smirk. “Total cool guy. Guitarist and has a motorcycle.”
“Huh,” Violet hummed as the gears in her brain started working yet again. “I do have a thing for guitarists, don’t I?”
“That you do,” Carrie agreed.
Violet chuckled before saying goodbye to Carrie and getting off her bed. After throwing on some fresh clothes and doing her makeup, Violet left the house for the store with the scheme unfolding in her brain. The new bag boy would be the perfect pawn in her plan.
Though, when she entered the store and laid her eyes on the new bag boy, she didn’t expect him to be this gorgeous. His sharp jawline and high cheekbones, along with the perfect swoopy brown hair was enough for her heart to nearly burst out of her chest.
“Fuck,” she muttered and made her way towards the cheese aisle. With her mind set on the pretty bag boy, she searched the shelves for the feta cheese and once she had found it, she reached for it. Being in such a rush, however, caused her to take the packet behind it with her, causing it to fall to the floor. “God dammit, stupid cheese,” she groaned to herself as she bend down to pick it up.
A hand bumped with hers as she reached for it, and, when she looked up, she stared straight into Pretty Boy’s light brown eyes. Violet swore they stared right through her soul, baring every little piece of her.
“What’s the cheese done to you?” he asked, chuckling as the two of them got up again, both holding the cheese.
She regathered herself from the impact the boy had on her ovaries and flicked a strand of hair out of her face. “It did what I want you to do.” She confidently said, her lips slightly parting as it had always been one of the many tricks she had up her sleeve.
Pretty Boy’s eyes skidded from the left to the right, trying to figure out what she meant.
Smirking, Violet wrapped her hand tighter around the cheese and, as he was still holding it, pulled it closer towards her, pulling him along until his face was inches away from hers. “Fall for me,” she whispered before letting go and pushing past him.
“You got plans tonight?” he shouted after her.
Violet smirked and turned around, glad her plan was working. “Yep, I’ll be at Red and Blue tonight,” she told him, hoping he’d get the hint. Judging by the smirk that lifted his plump lips, Violet knew she was winning.
“I’ll see you there then.”
And the boy managed to keep his word. That night, when Violet was at Red and Blue with Julie, Flynn and Carrie, the Pretty Boy showed up too. Her breath hitched in her throat as she noticed him approach her.
“You didn’t,” Carrie gasped in Violet’s ear.
“I did.” She smiled at the boy. “Hey,” she greeted when he was close enough.
“Fancy seeing you here,” he teased as he reached for her hand and kissed the back of it like a true gentleman. “I never got your name.”
She went on her tiptoes and pressed her lips against his ear. “Violet Dawson,” she introduced herself over the loud music.
“Marcus. Marcus Baker.”  The two of them smiled at one another, causing Violet’s world to stop spinning for just a moment. “Wanna dance closer to the DJ? The atmosphere’s always better there.” Violet bit down on her lower lip as she nodded her head in response. Marcus then led her through the sea of dancing people, holding on tight to her hand.
As the two danced together to the music, Violet noticed Luke walking into the club with his bandmates closeby. His eyes skidded across the crowd and halted when they met Violet’s. He hadn’t even noticed who she was dancing with until he had approached them.
“Hey,” he said, “Who’s this?”
“Marcus,” Pretty Boy introduced himself with a smile as he reached his hand out for Luke to shake, which the rockstar completely ignored. “Okay…”
“You wanna get out of here?” Luke asked Violet, cocking his head towards the door.
Violet’s eyebrows knitted together, “I’m actually having fun, Luke. I’d rather stay.” She looked up at Marcus, shooting him a quick, apologetic smile. “But you can go if you’re not having fun.”
“Oh, uhm… No, I’m staying. You want something to drink?” he asked instead, and Violet could tell he was getting a little nervous.
“Sure. You want something, Marcus?”
Marcus hummed and grabbed Violet’s hand again before guiding her towards the bar, leaving Luke to trail behind them.
“When were you gonna tell me you had a boyfriend?” Marcus asked, his lips pressed to her ear to make sure only she would hear.
Violet chuckled. “Oh, he’s not my boyfriend. We went on like one date and I think he’s desperate for another, but I’m not really that interested.”
“Ah,” said Marcus, nodding his head. “You need me to make sure he knows that?”
Violet smirked. “No, I’ve got another idea for that.” She said and confidently made her way to the stage. Marcus watched as she walked, his lips turned up into a smirk.
She grabbed the microphone on the stand and cleared her throat before nodding at the band, telling them to start playing the song. While the upbeat, bass-driven music chimed through the venue, the girl started swaying her hips before starting to sing with her eyes focused on Luke.
“You thought I'd worry That I've made the wrong decision But I'm moving on way faster than I thought I think I've grown out Your destructive efforts Still you're holding on to all the things we loved”
A soft, yet distinctive guitar riff chimed in at the pre-chorus and when she looked up, she found Marcus next to her with a guitar in his hands and a smile on his face.
“You want me to come back Like I want you anytime Now I'm here with somebody Now it's the sad boy you play out And again I'm falling Yet again that's no surprise Thought I left it behind”
Having Marcus there gave her the confidence to really go for it on the chorus. She started moving her hips to the music while singing the lyrics to Luke, who stood near the bar, watching her and Marcus like a hawk.
“But I don't want this You think I want you back But I'm so over this Boy bye And I'm not homesick You think I want you back But I'm so over this For now?”
The music went back to its bass-driven core and while Violet focused on Luke at the back of the club, Marcus couldn’t keep his eyes off of Violet as she sang. From the moment they had met, he had found her interesting. She was this overly confident, attractive woman and it intrigued him. He wanted to know what she was compensating for.
“Friends keep asking why we're not together So I guess you haven't told 'em what you did Oh You may be sorry It's not better late than never And I think this time I'm glad we called it quits”
As even Marcus grew more confident on the guitar, Violet made her way over to him and leaned on his shoulder. This action made him look up. Neither of them could hide the smile crawling to their lips as their eyes locked.
“You want me to come back Like I want you anytime Now I'm here with somebody Now it's the sad boy you play out And again I'm falling Yet again that's no surprise Thought I left it behind”
She stepped away from Marcus again and for a few seconds, kept eye contact with him until she got lost in the music and let herself go during the chorus.
“But I don't want this You think I want you back But I'm so over this Boy bye And I'm not homesick You think I want you back But I'm so over this For now?”
Her eyes landed on Luke again to see his reaction on her performance. She didn’t like what she saw though. He looked at her in the same way he had during their dinner. The literal embodiment of the heart eyes emoji. It frustrated her, but it didn’t distract her from the song.
“But we gotta stop the playing round The playing round For Gods sake Oh we gotta quit the playing round It's more than we can take Oh we gotta stop this playing round The playing round For Gods sake Oh we gotta stop the playing round It's more than we can take”
“But I don't want this You think I want you back But I'm so over this Boy bye And I'm not homesick You think I want you back But I'm so over this For now?”
Marcus took Violet’s glance his way as a sign to really go at it on the guitar and show off a little. It did seem to impress her as she turned towards him, giving him that same smirk she did in the store.
“But I’m so over this Boy bye And I'm not homesick You think I want you back But I'm so over this Boy bye Boy bye”
She let out a very last hum as the band stopped playing, Marcus included. The crowd then burst out into applause and even the guitar boy next to her clapped for her. Her cheeks heated up whilst she locked eyes with him.
“I didn’t know you could sing,” Marcus said, placing the guitar back where he found it.
Violet shrugged. “Didn’t know you played guitar.” That was a lie, Carrie did tell her that, but it was the right thing to say as it caused Marcus to bare his pearly white teeth that nearly caused Violet to get a heart attack.
“That was hot,” Luke grunted in her ear when she and Marcus approached the bar for another drink.
Violet furrowed her eyebrows. “You didn’t get the hint, did ya?” she asked and Luke tilted his head a little, the smirk vanishing from his face. “Leave me alone, Luke. Please?”
“Wha– Violet?” Before he could say anything else, Marcus had already whisked her away to go and dance on the dancefloor with a drink in their hand. None of it made much sense to Luke, but he figured it was just the new way Violet operated. Maybe she didn’t want to be exclusive. Maybe he needed to try harder.
And that’s what he was going to do.
Try harder.
Tumblr media
Violet was almost scared to turn up to practice the next day. Luke would probably hate her for rejecting him and it would make everything awkward and weird. It wasn’t going to end well and she knew that.
When she arrived at the garage, she was proven right. Luke acted cold towards her as soon as she entered the studio and everyone could feel how the warm, comfortable bond they had, had turned ice cold.
“No, Bobby!” Luke groaned for the nth time that rehearsal. “It’s a B chord, not a C chord! Are you ever gonna get it right?!” His voice was thundering through the garage and it startled each and every person in that room.
Violet glanced over to Carrie, who furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. She hadn’t been informed about the conversation Violet and Luke had had the other day, but she could tell something had been off about the two since rehearsal started.
“Luke, calm down!” Alex yelled at the lead guitarist. He did know what had happened between the two and he knew Luke was taking it out on everybody else instead of owning up to it like an adult.
Luke scoffed, “No, Alex! This is exactly why we broke up in the first place! Because we don’t work!” His eyes flicked over to Violet, making her feel like there was a different layer to that sentence. They wouldn’t work either.
“No, you’re just mad because you got rejected!” Alex fought back. At least someone mentioned the elephant in the room. The girls on the sofa gasped and all three of them immediately looked at Violet, who shrunk in her seat behind the piano.
Luke clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “Rub it in, why don’t you?” he muttered before placing his guitar on its stand and gathering his stuff.
As he started to make his way to the door, Violet got out from behind the piano and ran after him. “You can’t run out of rehearsal, Luke! Come on! Just because I didn’t wanna go on a date with you, doesn’t mean you have to quit the band!”
“I do though,” he said and turned around. With a few large, but slow-paced steps, he stopped in front of the brunette girl that had broken his heart and hurt his fragile reputation.
“Why?”
Sighing, Luke muttered,“Because I joined for you, you idiot.”
Violet couldn't possibly say anything to that and let Luke walk away again. The feelings she had been feeling for him all this time finally got reciprocated. By a different version of Luke, that is, but still. It didn’t quite matter which Luke said it. She heard it coming from his mouth. The words she’d been wanting to hear for years.
“I am so sorry, guys,” she breathed, hiding her face in her hands. “This is all my fault.”
“It’s not your fault, Violet,” Reggie said, shrugging. “Luke’s just stubborn. He can’t take no for an answer.”
It was supposed to make her feel better, but it didn’t quite. She had ruined any and all chances she had of returning to her own universe just because one version of that guy had hurt her years ago.
“Can we end rehearsal early then?” Alex questioned, coming out from behind his drums. “I got a date with Willie tonight.”
Violet smiled. At least that was a thing here. “Yeah, sure. It’s not like we’re gonna be able to perform at Chubbie’s anyway,” she said, shrugging.
“We’ll get there, don’t worry,” Alex tried to soothe her and placed a hand on her shoulder as he passed her on his way to the door.
“Yeah, we’ll be ready in time,” Reggie agreed as he, along with Julie and Flynn left the garage, leaving Violet with the Wilsons.
Violet shook her head, trying to wrap it around what had just happened. “How can we be ready in time when the gig is this weekend?” she mumbled to herself when Carrie wrapped her arms around the girl.
“I know how to get your mind off of everything,” she said, pressing her temple against Violet’s. “Girl’s night at my place.”
Violet couldn’t help the smile reaching her cheeks. That did sound like a good plan. The best plan, even. It would keep her mind off Luke and the gig and the whole universe thing. It would calm her nerves and anxieties.
Or at least, she thought it would until they arrived at the Wilson’s house. A group of girls stood at the front door, angry expressions on their faces and arms crossed in front of their chests.
“Where have you guys been?” Kayla asked, grumpily. “We’ve been waiting here for over an hour!”
Carrie squeezed her eyes shut. “Fuck, I forgot about rehearsal…” she muttered.
“Rehearsal for what?” Violet questioned, unaware of any gigs that were happening for Dirty Candy. Though, judging from Kayla’s shocked face, there was a gig she should be aware of.
“The gig this Saturday!” she sneered. “A mega-important gig at that!”
Carrie and Violet glanced at each other, eyes widened in complete horror. The exact same day as the gig at Chubbie’s with the boys from Sunset Curve. As Kayla and the girls started yelling at Carrie and Violet, the latter completely zoned out. She couldn’t hear a word of what was said. All she could think about was how she might be stuck here for the rest of her life if she didn’t perform at Chubbie’s on Saturday with the boys.
What if they didn’t show up after that humongous fight? What if that wouldn’t be the thing they had to do to get her back?
The girl’s storming off snapped Violet out of her thoughts, yet she still found herself in some sort of state of shock. Nothing felt right anymore and everything kind of sucked. There was no way she was ever going to survive in this universe if stuff like this kept happening.
“Vi?” she could hear Bobby’s voice in the far distance. “Are you okay?”
She coughed, shaking herself back. “Yeah… Yeah. I’m okay,” she clearly lied but the Wilsons didn’t push further and instead took her inside where the girls watched some movies together.
Within half an hour, Carrie had already fallen asleep and Violet couldn’t bear watching the rest of the movie. Her mind was restless and kept running back and forth over her options and every possible scenario that could happen.
There was only one thing that could keep her mind off everything. So, she hoisted herself up from the couch and made her way to the music room where she took a seat at the piano.
Her fingers grazed the keys, letting a soft melody fly out the instrument. A content sigh left her body as she let the music take her away. It felt nice to let everything out of her system. It seemed to be her one and only escape to her from this crazy world.
“You okay, Vi?” Bobby’s voice shook her out of her thoughts, causing to stop playing the piano. “You seemed a little out of it earlier.” He moved over towards her and sat down next to her. Their shoulders touched and it caused a weird spark to send shivers down Violet’s back. Something she had never felt before.
“Yeah… Everything’s just… a lot, you know?” Bobby tilted his head, urging her to elaborate. “The switching universes, Luke suddenly being into me, the pressure of being in Dirty Candy…. It’s just – a lot… I’m used to being on my own, writing music with my best friends, but now I’m suddenly supposed to be this whole other person…. It’s exhausting.”
A single tear rolled down her cheek, which Bobby caught with his thumb just before it reached her lip. The two locked eyes and for a second, Violet found herself drowning in his eyes. She had never noticed how gorgeous they were until now. The dark brown, the slight twinkle that was in them. She had never seen him up close like this. Her eyes took that liberty to scan his entire face. From his eyes to his nose and cheeks to his lips. Before they could move back to his eyes, Bobby closed the gap between the two of them and kissed her, full on the lips.
Violet was startled, at first, but quickly melted away under his touch, closing her eyes as he deepened the kiss. The kiss lasted longer than it should’ve, but Violet didn’t quite mind. Or at least not until her mind drifted back to Luke and she felt like she was kissing him instead of Bobby.
This caused her to flinch back.
“Sorry! I shouldn’t have…. I’m sorry,” she quickly muttered before getting up and running out.
Though it was a mistake to Violet, Bobby didn’t quite see it like that. If it were up to him, this would’ve happened a lot earlier and could happen a lot more often. He had never admitted it to anyone, but he had been in love with Violet for years. Those feelings had never been reciprocated, so he didn’t act up on them either. Violet was just Violet. Until now.

okay so as we all know, a lot of fanfics are written with a white y/n in mind, right? and that't not a problem at all, i know that's probably just because a lot of the authors are white and they write their fanfics for themselves as well as their readers, which is completely understandable
the problem is that when their is a POC!reader fic, they'll label it as a poc reader but as you're reading the fic it becomes ridiculously obvious that it's only really suited for black readers.
And i just get really frustrated sometimes because i feel like in the world in general, poc's that aren't black or east asian get completely left out of the conversation.
Like how much do you know about the struggles that desc asians face? or central asians? or poc hispanics? You don't. Because for some reason our struggle isn't as important as the black struggle or the east asian struggle and I can't figure out why.
The other day in a lesson I was giving my opinion on racism and a black girl fully said to me, you've never experienced racism so you shouldn't speak on it.
I'm literally indian. I am brown. I experience just as much racism as every other kind of poc.
same vibes as ginny and georgia's "you're more white than i'll ever be" line and i am NOT here for it.
The girl said "I bet you've never been racially profiled and accused of being a drug dealer" and i said back to her "no i haven't, but me and my family have been accused of being a terrorist and get strip searched every time we go to the airport, who are you to say that your experience is worse than mine"
like yes, we face different obstacles within our oppression but it is completely unfair to say that black oppression is worse than the other races. instead of comparing and one upping each other we should be working together to make the world a better place for everyone.
becca sweetheart i know you can't really do anything about this but i just wanted to rant because i'm so annoyed at all of it.
I'm tired of white people only knowing about black oppression and calling it knowledge about racism when they know virtually nothing about the oppression of other races and i'm tired of some black folks (not all obviously, just some) acting like they're the only race who have struggled
- anon who is angry and confused and would really appreciate an explanation on why the brown struggle is less important to the world
This isn’t something I can comment on too heavily obviously but it certainly isn’t right of her to say that to you and you have every right to be angry about it. And honestly, I have no answer for you! And I truly wish I did
And to be honest, where I come from, 98% of the population is white (not a guess, I checked the census just in case you think I’m exaggerating). In our schools, we are taught nothing about any kind of oppression. Which, now that I’m older, just seems absolutely insane. We were never educated. Our curriculum doesn’t mention on it or at least it didn’t when I was at school. I had 7 years of primary school and 7 years of secondary school in which we never discussed racism or anything even remotely close at all.
And really, that’s a whole lot of the problem, there’s just an overall lack of education. I don’t know how it’s discussed in your education system but I can only speak for my own and I will say that, here at least, the general public don’t seek out education on things like that. There’s almost a vibe that blissful ignorance is more appealing? That’s absolutely not an excuse but really, I feel like at times, there’s an attitude of “if it was important, I’d have been taught about it at school.” and of course, we weren’t and that line of thinking is totally wrong anyway.
But that doesn’t and shouldn’t put the onus on you to educate others. That’s not your job and you shouldn’t have to do that. But I’m really glad you felt able to correct her misinformation because while it was a shit experience for you, maybe she’ll think twice next time. Or maybe she’ll do some research. Who knows. It’s still awful for you that you had to listen to that and I genuinely am sorry, I could never have any idea how that must feel.
Again, I really have very little I can comment on and I recognise that so I hope this made sense okay?

I can barely breathe when you are near.
I’m just gonna say I totally loved the show. Mad love.
And in case you haven’t figure it out yet, or watched the show to get it, I’m talking about Ginny and Georgia.
So many important topics touched on so many feelings and oh so many love triangles.
So join me as i dissect the whole show hehe .
Alright basic plot-
Young single mom Georgia and her teenage daughter Ginny, and younger son Austin, are always on the road and have now moved across the country to the small town of Wellsbury, Massachusetts from Texas, where they encounter a whole load of quirky characters. Ginny, who never had friends, slowly starts fitting in with the popular sophomores, mainly her neighbour Maxine, who also has a twin brother Marcus while Georgia befriends their mother Ellen. The series follows their attempts and struggles of fitting in with the town, all while developing their own love triangles (square in Georgia’s case). And the best part is, the unfolding of Georgia’s dark past filled with teen mom struggles and a little bit of murder mystery as to how she has gotten to where she is now.
Teen mom and daughter combo again? Been there done that!
Well yes, as everyone compares it to Gilmore Girls (my personal favourite show ever) here are some similarities and differences as well as other show references.
*SPOILERS!!
It does explore that close relationship that Ginny and Georgia have, but obviously the kind of bond that Rory and Lorelai had were a lot stronger and had their own personal quirks and wit. There were often rifts in G&G’s relationship caused by the secrets of Georgia’s past as well as Ginny feeling inferior to her own mother in terms of looks and her ability to be a chameleon to fit in anywhere. Rory was more focused on her grades and was comfortable just having her few friends. Ginny on the other hand wanted to be liked and wanted to fit in with her school friends and eventually becomes part of MANG and the boys. And in the case of the mothers, Lorelai focused on raising Rory and worked her way up to eventually owning her own Inn while Georgia snuck and tiptoed her way around swindling money wherever she could but all in the best intentions of her kids more than herself, desperate to give her kids the life she never had.
Also in a way I feel like this is also similar to Jane the Virgin except of course Jane’s character is older, but if you take the standpoint of the mother-daughter relationship and love triangle(Jane/Rafael/Michael) as well as a little psychotic Murder mystery Petra vibes.
, I feel like G&G is a good mix of Gilmore and JTV.
When it comes to love interests, Ginny was stuck between boyfriend Hunter and neighbour Marcus. Sweet, innocent Hunter (my favourite character in the whole series because if you know me you’d know I’m a hopeless romantic) was pretty much Dean to Rory, while cool skater and stoner guy Marcus was Jess. And honestly I see a similar trend here where most people are Team Jess/Marcus whereas I’m team Dean/Hunter for the main fact that Dean and Hunter both treated the girls really good and I like that.
Georgia, as I mentioned was more of in a love square than a triangle, because why the hell not right? There’s Joe, the owner of the cafe where everyone spends most of their time, then there’s Mayor Paul, who Georgia pushes her way to work for to get on his good side. And then of course, Zion, Ginny’s father. Sounds a lot like Luke, Jason and Christopher doesn’t it. I love that Joe had a more interesting and different story, where it was depicted in the flashback scene where homeless young Georgia, just found out she was pregnant at a gas station and comes out to a crowd of high schoolers, which is when she meets Joe. She says to him  “I’ll look you up if I’m ever in Wellsbury” Joe was already attracted to her as a teenager and doesn’t realise it’s the same Georgia he met years ago till the last episode whereas Georgia has known all this while. I don’t know about you but I feel like now Georgia has the funds to move to somewhere she aspired to be, where she knows her kids will get the best and where she received “a sandwich and a pair of raybans that changed my life” Also let me just add that Raymond Ablack (Joe) is INCREDIBLY HOT.
Moving on to Paul, Georgia is attracted to him but there is that underlying greed because Paul can provide her stability and security and power. And that is when she will finally feel like she has achieved wheat she needs to. Towards the end, she almost chooses Zion because of her deep affection for him as ‘her penguin’ as she refers to him as. Being with Zion also means she can let her guard down and relax a little, and obviously is a great father to Ginny and even Austin who isn’t even his biologically. Which also makes both guys equally good contenders for Georgia.
Another thing I love about the show is MANG. Their friendship is real, it’s not just Abby and Norah accepting Ginny because of Max. Yes Abby did throw her under the bus in the beginning but they soon became really close and never singled her out after the shoplifting incident. It wasn’t a whole case of Regina George and the plastics all over again. They didn’t care that she was different.
So I feel like Abby is a very interesting character also. I read that her character was created based on a friend of the writer. So abby puts up a very strong front when actually she is feeling quite distraught from her parents ongoing divorce as well as her own issues with body image. Abby is very petite but still is not satisfied with her body so she tapes her thighs to make them look smaller and wear tight jeans so that she can look slimmer. I the Halloween episode, Press even calls her “whale legs” and she obviously gets upset and you can see it affects her because she’s striving for such a perfect image all the time but also I feel like she has a thing for Press so that really messes her up. You can also see she does get a little jealous of Ginny and Max’s friendship but that’s mainly because she feels lonely and unheard and she ends off being estranged from Norah and Max feeling like her whole world crumbled. I really hope MANG gets to patch up. They were the ideal friend group along with the guys.
“Oppression Olympics, let’s go.”
I don’t know guys, this line really stood out to me.
Basically this is the scene in episode 8 where Ginny and Hunter argue about racism and why Ginny deserved to win that writing contest with her unique style (girl used slam poetry for goodness sake that essay was amazing!!??) But Hunter won and he is clearly the favourite of their teacher. He talks about how he is half Taiwanese and the Asian stereotypes he faces here as well as the White remarks he gets from the Asian side of his family. Ginny too says she can’t fit in because she is half Black and how this town had a very small black population and people are not sure how to look at her. I feel like touching on these topics of race was really vital to not only the show but to the actors as well. From the bts, I read that Antonia (Ginny) and Mason (Hunter) were in a room with the writer and jus spoke about the kind of remarks they have personally faced which helped develop the argument scene because it was so real and raw and quite upsetting to watch. It’s something very relatable to the audience which also just amplified that whole episode overall.
I mentioned earlier my favourite character is Hunter. I admit I have a major crush on both the actor and the fictional character. Ok so I think Hunter was a great character, a very good boyfriend too, I mean look at the way he cared for Ginny, supported her, just that unfortunately she was more attracted to Marcus in the end but also that ugly oppression olympics fight just gave his character more depth to show that Hunter wasn’t as perfect as he seemed. I think girls watching the show deserved to see what a good guy looked like. He was smart, in a band, a very caring boyfriend, popular but not cocky. If you compare to let’s say the character if Peter Kavinsky, I think Hunter made a better boyfriend. DO i also think Kavinsky is a damn dream boat? Of course I do. but then again, I thought John Ambrose was a much better guy in the TATB series. Kavinsky was originally dating another girl before the whole fake couple thing started. Whereas going back to Hunter, he already admired Ginny from the first episode and stayed truly respectful until the end of the show. And that’s something girls should see and aspire to have.
Yes I loved the song I loved the fact that he sang it for her, I am such a hopeless romantic and I absolutely hate that poor Hunter/Mason has been getting a lot of backlash for the song/character. I’ve rewatched a lot of the Hunter/Ginny scenes multiple times just because. Hunter was a good guy. Period.
So looking forward, I think a lot of important topics were touched in this show, slightly different from let’s say 13 Reasons Why, and I hope that they can continue to delve into those stories such as racism, self harm, body image and so on which really hit home for me. Important discussion topics, important for kids to see like oh hey this character is kinda like me, and if they are facing these issues, how can they get through it?
Also I need answers to all my questions - Where did Ginny go? How does Georgia get away with everything? Will MANG get back together? Does Abby have a deeper story to tell? Do Marcus and Ginny end up together? AND WHAT ABOUT MY POOR BBY HUNTER??? Lots of unanswered questions, lots of stories to dig deeper into, and so many secrets. I loved the mother l-daughter relationship, the same way I loved Lorelai and Rory’s relationship too.
I obviously totally enjoyed the show, I’ve recommended it to many friends and I hope they enjoy it as much as I do, and get more people on my Hunter Chen bandwagon hahahaha! Let’s hope for a season 2!!
Another super long post, finally done. I can move on to watching other shows now (and still constantly wish I too had cool stuff like Sophomore sleepover)
Hate you, kidding! Love you, mean it!
