Team Gremlin:

There was silence for a long, long time. Nothing but Ruby’s sobbing and Yang’s pounding heart and the fear that pressed down on them from all around. Formless, but not nameless. Then she heard the stairs creak and for one moment Yang was sure that “Salem” was coming upstairs to get Ruby.

But then the door opened and Yang saw Dad’s boots, “Girls? It’s okay. Come on out.” Yang didn’t move, Ruby just sobbed a little louder and clung tighter to her. Dad sighed and bent down to peer at them, “You heard all that didn’t you.” He looked … not mad, but stressed. Maybe scared, and that made the fear worse for Yang. Yang clung to Ruby, her precious baby sister with silver eyes that no monster should be able to get to, and nodded. Dad’s face pinched, then he gave a smile that even she could tell was fake, “Come on out, girls. It’s okay. I promise. That was all just- that was adult talk okay? You don’t need to worry about that until you’re older-.”

“Ruby’s eyes,” Yang bit out, “R-ruby has Mom’s e-eyes.”

“It’s okay, Yang, Ruby, I promise. We’ll take care of it-.”

A creak of wood behind Dad and he frowned before straightening up and turning to face whoever was there, “I’ll be down in a minute, just let me-.”

“Taiyang,” Professor Ozpin sounded weirdly calm, more calm than Dad did, “may I speak to them?”

“…I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

A sigh, “I am well aware of your opinion on this matter, Taiyang, and I respect it. But they have already heard enough to be terrified. Telling them to forget it now is not only impossible but potentially worse than talking to them. You made your stance on this matter very clear, but that does not apply to your children if it will put them in danger.” Professor Ozpin’s voice softened, “Either I speak with them or Qrow does, but please. Let one of us help.”

Dad didn’t move for a long time, then his boots made for the door, “Fine. But don’t drag them into this more than you have to.” A deep breath, “Girls? I’m going downstairs to check on your mother, if you need anything, just shout, okay? Professor Ozpin is going to talk to you for a little bit. He’ll be very nice.” The last bit was said in the same voice he used when warning Zwei not to dig holes in the yard.

Dad’s boots disappeared and fancy black shoes came closer. There was a pause, then, “Would you prefer to stay under the bed?” Ruby whined and Yang glared without a word. She didn’t know what was going on, but Dad seemed mad at Professor Ozpin and everything was scary and so yes, she wanted to stay under the bed. The tip of his fancy cane tapped the floorboards a few times, then there was a hiss and a whirr of gears like from her parents’ gear and the tip disappeared. With a grunt, he knelt down and then lay down on his stomach like even Mom rarely did. He pillowed his chin on his crossed arms and it was so strange seeing a fancy, famous person lying on his belly on the floor of Ruby’s room that Yang snorted despite herself.

Professor Ozpin’s face crinkled into a faint smile and it looked real and warm, “Hello there. You must be Yang and Ruby. I am Professor Ozpin, I’m a friend of your uncle and your mother. Can I safely assume you heard the most important parts of that conversation? The Grimm and the silver eyes and,” the briefest hesitation, “Salem?”

Ruby finally pulled her face away from Yang’s shoulder to whimper, “I-is she gonna take Mom away and m-make her a Grimm? Is she gonna t-take me?”

“Ah. You have silver eyes,” Professor Ozpin murmured, then his face fell back into that faint, warm smile, “Your mother is alright now, and now that we know what is going on, we will be much more careful. I promise, I will do everything in my power to keep your mother and you safe. But to do that … I would like to tell you a story, and you must both promise me to never tell it to anyone. For the safety of you and your mother.” They nodded, hesitantly, even though Yang certainly didn’t want to hear anymore scary things today. But if it would help keep Ruby and Mom safe-.

Professor Ozpin’s smile faded, but his eyes were still warm, “Once upon a time,” he began, and they listened intently as the man with white hair slowly outlined a story that sounded right out of a fairy tail.

Always I Dreamed verse:

Summer had no idea what Professor Ozpin had been thinking, making her the leader of Team STRQ. Then again, the only other real option would have been Taiyang, and as much as she enjoyed his company and was coming to think of him as a good friend and teammate, he wouldn’t have been able to handle the Branwen twins.

Not that Summer was much better at handling the Branwen twins.

They hadn’t done anything to get the team in trouble, but she didn’t know how to deal with them. Taiyang made sense, even if he had a few oddly adorable hangups on things like “modesty” —they were two guys and two girls living in the same room, she didn’t really see what modesty had to do with anything when they weren’t out in public—. Taiyang understood her when she tried to … bond with the team, tried to get them to be more than just four strangers living under the same roof and tackling the same assignments in class. Raven and Qrow on the other hand…

Every time she suggested a group activity, they watched her like she was going to bite. Like they couldn’t fathom the point of learning more about or bonding with anyone outside themselves. Taiyang had suggested it was an out of kingdom thing, but Summer had lived outside the kingdoms until five years ago, and she had never acted like that. Her family hadn’t either. That feral behavior, wary distrust and eerie staring in the middle of the night like even the room wasn’t safe to sleep in without a watch wasn’t anything like what Summer and her family or neighbors had grown up with. The only ones who had acted even similar had been-.

Oh.

Now that’s an idea.

Blood of My Blood verse:

The next one was a whole month after Grandma Crepera had first appeared and only a week after the scary man with the mace, but three times was enough for Dionysus to be able to immediately tell what was happening when he blinked his way to awareness in a dream. He looked around uneasily, afraid of being yelled at by someone again, but … there was no one scary nearby. He was in a small little building inside a big, unfamiliar garden. The building was just a roof and little pillars holding it up and a stone floor to stand on with a little table inside and-.

A woman.

She was sitting at the table, working on something, but instead of it being paperwork like Grandpa or taking care of a sword like Uncle Cor, she was … spinning mud? She was making mud spin and pulling at it with her hands, changing its shape with her fingers, and Dionysus hadn’t realized he’d drifted into the gazebo to watch her in awe until she glanced up from her work and smiled at him. She went back to watching her mud, and when she spoke, her voice wasn’t echoing and scary, “Hello. Would you like to join me? I have enough for both of us to use if you like.”

Dionysus watched the spinning-spinning-spinning in awe, but shook his head and tucked his hands behind his back, “Iggy says I can’t play in the mud cause I’ll get dirty an’ it’s unb- unbe- bad for a prince.” He blinked up at her, “How come you’re playing in the mud? Iggy says old people don’ like mud.”

The spinning slowed to a stop as she stared at him and he wondered if she was going to get mad. But then she started laughing, an old, deep sound that felt nice, all the way to his bones, “This is not mud, Cheeky Prince, this is clay. People use it to make things like mugs and teapots and vases. Come, come sit and I will show you how.” She waved her muddy hand and set down a chair next to hers in a flash of magical rosy-blue sparks. So she was family, just like the last ones had been. Dionysus hadn’t known he had so much family before. Then again, he was pretty sure they were all dead, and that’s why they were talking to him in dreams rather than when he was awake —and a part of him wondered if that should scare him, but it didn’t, so as long as they didn’t act scary, he didn’t bother trying—.

Dionysus climbed onto the chair and watched her in curiosity. It still looked a lot like mud to him, but it was a different color from mud, so he supposed it could be something else. The woman was spinning her clay again, fingers deftly shaping and pinching and rubbing, “My name is Nyssia, though some once called me the Just.”

Dionysus thought of the Hall of Arts and all the pictures and statues in it, including some of Grandma Crepera, and wondered if she was one of the pictures in the Hall, “Just like Grandma Crepera?”

An amused twitch of her lips, “Yes, I am like Crepera. We are both related to you, but we are older than King Regis.”

He tilted his head, partially mesmerized by what she was doing with the spinning clay, but curious despite himself about other things. She was like Grandma Crepera and the others, but she hadn’t used a scary voice at all, “How come?”

She hummed without looking away from her work, “How come what, Cheeky Prince? I cannot read your mind.”

Dionysus pouted at her, because wasn’t it obvious what he was asking? But then he said, “You don’ have a scary voice like they do.”

Now she did glance up at him with a look like Grandpa had when he said something silly, “Oh, don’t I?” Dionysus jolted in his seat, startled, but not … scared. Her voice had echoed just now, deep and layered like when Grandma Crepera or Leon had spoken, but it didn’t make him feel like he needed to go hide. It reminded him oddly of the big, booming bells that hung from old church in his favorite movie, loud but mellow. He kind of liked it, but he was still glad when her voice went back to normal as she shrugged, “I merely thought you would not like it if I used that voice. So I did not.”

You didn’t have to give me that much of a compliment, gosh. Thank you though! Being able to share my ideas is one of my favorite things, and I’m glad you enjoy writing them!

This time I’ve got a normal Hermitcraft suggestion for you. It’s sewer cats (and bird) time!

The sewer society of hermits (Grain, Imp, Mr. Goodtimes, Bdoobs, and RenCat lol) is about to have another meeting to judge points and maybe do a big group prank. They’re happily chatting when they hear sniffling in the corner behind Scar’s spoiler wall. They check behind it to find a cam account that went missing at the beginning of the season (in this AU of mine), BadTimesWithScar. The group takes to comforting him, and also recruiting him into the sewer cats. Impulse gives him the nickname “Scap” based on Tango’s typo during the boomers job, and Bdubs decides to call him pancakes. (I’m a huge softie for BadTimes tbh, he’s just so angst-able and I will protect him with my life)

Hot take: the “Bad” in BadTimesWithScar’s name doesn’t mean evil, it means just generally bad at life. Poor Mr BadTimes :( Thanks for another great ask! Feel free to send more than one at a time if you have more than one idea! The more the merrier lol

“So we’re all in agreement with the points?” Grian asks, standing at the points board.

Everyone nods, but Bdubs mutters, “Still can’t believe I only got one point.”

“Bdubs, my dude, you’re lucky got ANY,” Ren snickers. “You literally moved six blocks.”

“She’s not gonna notice, though!” protests Bdubs. “You coulda given me a COUPLE more.”

“Bro, if you keep complaining, we’re gonna knock it down to three,” Grian says amusedly. “Anyway, now that the points are sorted, let’s discuss what our next big thing is. I think it’d be great if we could-.”

“Wait, wait, shh!” hisses Ren suddenly.

Everyone falls silent, their eyes fixed on Ren, who is looking sharply around the room, ears pricked.

“What is it?” Grian whispers.

Ren gestures for them to stay there while he creeps towards the giant wall of dirt that Scar has erected as a spoiler wall. He creeps closer, in the direction of the noise he heard earlier, and carefully peeks around the dirt wall.

He freezes as he spots what made the noise.

“S-Scar?” he calls shakily. “You’d better get over here. Quick.”

Frowning, Scar hops down from the table and rushes over to join Ren, closely followed by Bdubs, Grian, and Impulse.

They find a dishevelled figure wearing clothes very similar to one of their members huddled between the spoiler wall and the thing behind it. Tear tracks streak down his pale face, but there’s no mistaking the scar on his face.

“Oh my god,” breathes Scar. “B-BadTimes? How…? How did you get down here?”

BadTimes buries his face in his hands and lets out another whimper, the noise Ren heard earlier.

“Who is BadTimes?” asks Bdubs.

“My cam account.” Scar looks away guiltily. “I haven’t seen him since the very start of the season.”

“Hey, buddy,” says Impulse softly, kneeling down to BadTimes’s level. He reaches out his hand, as if trying to tame a scared cat. “Hey. Are you okay? Can you talk to me?”

After a moment, BadTimes lowers his hands slightly and stares at Impulse with frightened eyes. “Y-Yes.” His eyes flicker up to Scar. “P-Please don’t lock me up again.”

Grian immediately glares at Scar. “What did you do to him?”

“Nothing!” Scar says defensively. “Well, I-I may have… shut him away in a closet and forgotten about him for a few… ah… months.”

“What?!” Grian yelps. “Dude, locking your sentient creations in closets is a REALLY bad idea. Trust me; I found that out the hard way.”

“Okay, okay, I won’t put him back in there! But he’s gotta go SOMEWHERE.”

“Let’s adopt him!” says Bdubs, wrapping his arms around BadTimes. “He can be a Sewer Cat like us! We could even build him a little house down here or he can build it himself, whatever he wants to do.”

“I-I… um…” BadTimes hesitates. “Scar says I’m not very good at building.”

Scar hurriedly holds up his hands as he realises his friends are very close to kicking his butt. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry! You’re not bad at building, BadTimes; you just need more practise, that’s all.”

“Did you never teach him?” demands Grian. “He’s not gonna magically get better on his own, you know.”

Scar sighs quietly. “I know… I’ve made a lot of mistakes with him.”

Grian’s glare melts into a sympathetic look. “I get that.”

“Hey, if we’re adopting you, maybe you wanna choose a new name?” Bdubs suggests. “Unless you’re happy with BadTimesWithScar.”

BadTimes shakes his head immediately. “I-I want to change it.”

“Do you wanna come up with a new name?” asks Impulse kindly. “Or would you like me to?”

After a moment, BadTimes says, “P-Please can you?”

“Of course.” Impulse thinks for a few seconds. “I wanna call you Scap.”

“What?” Bdubs frowns, confused, until realisation finally dawns on him. “Wait, are you referring to that time the Boomers blasted Scar’s name into stone but Tango made a mistake with the ‘r’?”

Impulse grins and nods. “Yeah! What do you think, buddy?”

BadTimes takes a moment to think about this. Then he gives a small smile. “I like Scap. It’s a lot better than my old name.”

“Thanks,” Scar sighs. “I was the one who named you BadTimes.”

“Bro, who exactly would want to be named that?” Grian scoffs. “It’s a good name for a simple cam account but not for a sentient being.”

“I guess.”

“I’m gonna call you Pancakes,” Bdubs declares out of the blue. “Is that okay?”

“Um…” Scap gives a quiet laugh. “Y-Yeah, definitely. Why?”

“Dunno, just suits you. Plus it seems like the kind of nickname Keralis would give you. Ah, I can’t wait for you to meet the other Hermits!”

Noticing the slightly panicked look on Scap’s face, Grian laughs and nudges Bdubs aside. “Let’s start with getting him settled down here before we go crazy, okay? Scap, what kind of place would you like to live in? Let us know and we’ll help you build it.”

Scap stares at him in surprise. “You will?”

“‘Course. We want you to get better at building but we’re not just gonna shove you out the nest and make you do it on your own. Just let us know what you want and we’ll help you.”

Scap hesitates, unsure exactly how to react. He’s never been shown such kindness before by anyone, not even by his own creator. “I… I’ve always liked the idea of living in an underground mushroom house.”

“Ooh, I can help you there,” says Impulse excitedly. “I’ve been studying Stress’s mushroom houses and I think I can replicate the style. You wanna go get some blocks to start building? See if you can get more than Bdubs.”

“What?” Bdubs scowls. “Do you really have to make everything into a competition?”

Impulse smirks back. “Oh, yeah, you’re right. Sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed you’d have a chance at winning.”

As he hoped, a spark ignites in Bdubs’s eyes. “Oh, just you wait! I’m gonna get ALL the blocks!”

With that, he dashes off towards the exit, closely followed by Ren.

Grinning, Impulse takes off after him, beckoning to Scap. “C’mon, Mr Pancakes!”

Scap lets out a giggle and runs to catch up with his new friends. “Wait for me!”

As the four disappear through the tunnel, Grian glances sideways at Scar, who is gazing after them with a mixed expression. “You alright, Scar?”

“How did you handle this with your creations?” Scar asks quietly. “When they turned out to be… not what you expected or wanted them to be.”

Grian pauses for a moment. “You’d think making creations is a lot like building a house: it turns out exactly the way you envision it and you have full control over every aspect. But it’s not. It’s way more like having an actual child. You can teach them, help them grow and develop, be there for them when they need you, but ultimately, you can’t control who they are. All you can do is support them and make sure they become the best version of themselves that they can possibly be. Even if that’s far removed from what you originally wanted. Cuz it’s not up to us, is it? It’s not our lives, it’s theirs.”

Grian places his hand on Scar’s shoulder. “Scap needs you, dude. Please don’t give up on him the way I gave up on my ch- my creations.”

After a long pause, Scar nods. “You’re right, Grian. You’re always right. I gotta be there for him.”

“Yeah.” Grian smiles and pats his friend on the shoulder. “And I’ll help you out too. We Sewer Cats look after each other, don’t we?”

Scar laughs. “I keep forgetting I came up with that name. But yeah, we do. And I guess that includes BadTimes now.”

“Scap,” corrects Grian.

“Oh! Yes, yeah.” Scar shakes his head. “Oh man, it’s gonna take a while to get used to this.”

As Grian opens his mouth to reply, they hear Bdubs’s voice angrily screaming through the tunnel.

“Better go rescue Bdubs,” laughs Grian. “Come on, Scar.”

“Right behind you.”

Reboot PoTA Couple Theme Songs and their Meanings

Boy did this take me a while to finish! This is something I’ve been working on almost all of 2019 and I’ve finally finished it (2019 was not nice to me-my classes were, but everything else was a blur of getting sick and going from no anxiety to anxiety attacks happening daily. It was just a mess!)

Like the title says, it’s a theme song list for our favorite Planet of The Apes shippings and couples (I only did a few to save time but if this gets popular enough, I could do another involving any shippings and couples that aren’t present here (such as Will X Caroline or Malcolm x Ellie)).

Each couple have their own five theme songs (because one isn’t enough to tell their full story) and each song represents something unique about the couple dynamic or how the shipping can be interpreted and will include a description underneath (some may be longer than others (the more I know on that shipping/more I have to say, the more I write about them)-I apologize in advance for that!). If there’s any information that is missing or details that I overlooked (or even if you disagree with the description) please feel free to share!

Please note that you are not obligated to listen to these songs and you are completely and totally free to add a song to these couple lists. Part of the reason why I made this was in hopes that maybe it would spark a conversation amongst us PoTA fans about our favorite PoTA shippings/couple and explore other shippings.

Also, I didn’t include OC relations here but feel free to add them in your reblogs(you may also re-use songs that are already on these lists if you feel they could describe your OC x Canon shipping)! All love stories are welcomed on this post! (the only rule is there can’t be any underage or huge age difference couples).

As this is a couples list, it only makes sense to start it with the king and queen themselves!

I think it’s more than safe to say that these two loved each other very much.

We saw Caesar and Cornelia’s relationship grow from Rise, Firestorm, Dawn, Revelations, to War and during that time, we’ve seen them grow closer (I actually think that, as their relationship progressed, Cornelia made Caesar a better leader-as she pointed things out to Caesar that he either ignored/didn’t realize/know in Firestorm).

When I personally think about this couple, I think about Caesar: The life he grew up with, the family he left behind when he chose to stay in the forest with the apes, the hardships he had to face in the earlier days/years of freedom and I think about all the stress and the anxiety that he had to have felt during those times. He had to have felt that he had to show strength in the presence of his followers-that would have meant not thinking/talking about Will, Charles or Caroline or letting it be known if he missed them at all.

Then I think about Cornelia. As his wife, she had to have known everything about Caesar. From his childhood to anything and everything he feared and worried about as king and leader. If there was anyone in the whole colony that Caesar could have shown that side to him, that uncertain, missing his family side to him, it would have been Cornelia, and I would imagine that she understood that he missed his human home. That she listened to his worries and comforted him-possibly reassured him if he needed it.

I didn’t know if it’s talked about very much but, as king and queen they’re very similar in personality: Both being compassionate and kind, but also fiercely protective of both the colony and of their friends and as parents, both are (also) protective and loving towards Blue Eyes and Cornelius (examples being Caesar protecting Blue Eyes from the bear and later protecting both sons from Carver in Dawn and Cornelia keeping Cornelius safe in Revelations).

This couple is featured in nearly every fanfic out there and every Planet of The Apes role-play that Tumblr has but I feel like we don’t talk about it enough. In War, Caesar was more than devastated by Cornelia’s death (and by the death of Blue Eyes) as he became vengeful, murderous and (pretty much) ready to kill because of it (remember that man with the wood at the oyster farm where they found Nova?).

If you really want to go there, it says a lot about his and Cornelia’s relationship during the war. That (maybe) the war took such a tool on Caesar (mentally and emotionally) that she became his strength. That (maybe) Caesar was already on the verge of losing it well before the attack on that hill (like having a breakdown or panic attack)-and I wouldn’t be surprised, as he was betrayed by Koba, then by Red and other followers of Koba, and his apes were being attacked, threatened and/or killed by the soldiers.

Maybe Cornelia kept him grounded, reminded him of who he was and what was important and when the Colonel killed her, it broke something in Caesar and when he lost her, he lost part of himself and may have forgotten who he was (only remembering when he realized he couldn’t kill the Colonel).

Blue Eyes and Lake clearly loved each other in War. We know they grew up together and played with each other as children though their (romantic) feelings for each other likely came later (around the time of Dawn/Revelations).

We didn’t get to see much of their relationship (due to Blue Eyes dying and/or being sent away in Revelations) but, considering that Blue Eyes was protective of his friends and family (and openly affectionate towards them in War), I think it can be assumed that he would have been a loving husband to Lake and would have protected her if she were in danger.

Lake appeared to love children, so it is reasonable to imagine they would have had children together and she would have, more than likely, been a wonderful mother to them. Lake was also brave (as seen when she defended Caesar in War), which makes it likely she could have assisted Blue Eyes as his queen (if he had lived to become king).

Yes, I absolutely had to start with this one as it’s, if I’m not mistaken, the most common shipping in the fandom (and it’s also my favorite too!).

Caesar and Koba were obviously very close in Dawn (as best friends and honorary brothers) as Koba saved Caesar from that bear in the beginning and Caesar later gifted the pelt to him. This relationship was created when Caesar rescued Koba and other apes from Gen-Sys and continued in Firestorm.

I can’t remember if I got this far into Caesar’s Story, but I wanna say there was a part in the book where it talked about Koba having feelings for/falling in love with Caesar(?)(Please correct me if I’m wrong).

It all came crashing down when the humans showed up and Koba’s hatred of them was reborn and it became clear to him that Caesar still ‘loved’ humans (when Koba said “Caesar loves humans more than apes” he may have actually believed that-it is also possible he may have thought Caesar loved humans more than him).

It eventually leads to Koba shooting him (which means he, essentially, abandoned his love for Caesar in favor of his hate for humans) and then declaring war on the humans-and later, resulted in Caesar having to kill him. Koba’s betrayal deeply hurt Caesar and so did killing him (let’s not forget that Koba’s ghost haunted him in War).

What I’ve noticed with this shipping is it’s all about the vulnerable and damaged side of Koba’s personality and about Caesar’s protective and compassionate heart.

Fanfics of this shipping sometimes follows the story of Dawn (with Pope as the bad guy or with Koba’s betrayal being deeper than just about revenge on the humans) and other times it’s completely different (nodding at the ‘Caesar and The Bonobo’ Beauty and The Beast AU on FanFiction and all other Caba one-shots(all deserve a read!)) but in all fanfics and fan arts of this shipping, there’s always a sense of heartache for the couple (either due to how Koba suffered before Rise or knowing how their relationship ended in Dawn).

Everything about this shipping is tragic and (when well-written out) heartbreaking but at the same time, it can be adorable and beautiful (I’m also tempted to call it irresistible for many fans-seriously, look on AO3, DeviantArt Wattpad, FanFiction.net-literally all of these sites has three or more fanfics/one-shots of this shipping (though I would advise you all to be careful as some of them may be, let’s say, ‘Rated R’)!).

I have not found any role-plays of this shipping on Tumblr (yet!) so I wouldn’t know how the shipping is portrayed in that category (Seriously, are there any role-plays of this? Cause I’d like to know!).

I’ve, sadly, only seen this shipping on role-play blogs here on Tumblr so much of this is guessed (if anyone reading this has role-played this shipping before or have more experience with it, please correct me if I’m wrong!)

Stone was one of Koba’s friends and first followers in Dawn (aside from Grey) but his motives for following Koba are never talked about (also in Revelations, it says he’s dead but he’s clearly seen alive in War…Does he have superpowers or did he just disappear and showed up again for War?)

(Here’s my guess) Stone likely disagreed with Caesar’s role (to some extent but I doubt he was as extreme about it as Koba was) but what if, his main reason for following Koba had more to do with him having secret feelings for the bonobo than anything else? What if Stone saw and knew that Koba was still haunted by his past and comforted him when no one else would? And by the time the humans reappeared in Dawn, Stone developed his own hatred for the species that had hurt his love?

Meanwhile, Koba, who likely doesn’t feel comfortable talking about his past with anyone and felt betrayed and angered when Caesar disregarded his hatred of humans, probably would have resisted Stone’s affection for a long time before he finally let him in and fully accepted the comfort and love from the chimp (it is also possible Koba used that very sympathy to manipulate Stone into doing his bidding but I’m not sure if he would have needed to as, again, Stone would have already hated humans for torturing Koba in the past anyway).

Now about Stone’s death/survival: Let’s say that Stone survived Dawn (as seen in War). If he really did have feelings for Koba, it’s likely he would have felt guilty and somewhat responsible for his love’s death as he had chosen to agree with him that the apes should go to war with humans instead of talking Koba out of it (to be fair I’m not sure if Koba could have been convinced otherwise after the fight with Caesar in the dam but I think Stone would have had a better chance of reasoning with him anyone else).

Now let’s say Stone had actually died and Koba wasn’t defeated by Caesar. I think it’s more than safe to say Koba would be screwed if he was the one to have to go to war with the Colonel in War instead of Caesar (and it may be reasonable to suspect he may eventually realize the gravity of what he did and would regret it all as the war continues) but if this war took Stone early on, and if Stone and Koba were romantically involved, it’s also reasonable to assume Koba would have regretted that most of all-seeing Stone as the last (and by the time of War, the only) to love him and care about him and feeling lost and alone without him.

All in all, this shipping has a love lost and a sort of ‘dam(sel) in distress’ feel to it.

I have the same problem here-total guesswork!

Based on what little I know of this shipping so far, it reminds me of the ‘outcast falls in love with popular person’ scenario that is sometimes seen in high school movies. But this shipping could seriously work as a love triangle story!

Koba and Cornelia have little to no interaction in the books (the ones I’ve read so far anyway!) or in the movies but it is known that they see each other as honorary brother and sister (due to Caesar and Koba being honorary brothers). It’s reasonable to assume they had mutual respect for each other and that Cornelia was just as betrayed by Koba’s actions as Caesar was.

However, it is never revealed what Koba’s plans would have been for Cornelia had Caesar truly died (there is a chance he could have forced her into marrying him but I also think there's a chance she would have rebelled against him and Koba could have decided to kill her (or kill Cornelius as punishment and then kill her? I dunno know)).

Also, what if Koba had wanted Cornelia as his wife all along and only decided to kill Caesar when he did because the humans ‘conveniently’ showed up (unlikely but maybe)? I think this shipping was born from the idea that Koba always had a secret crush on Cornelia but kept it a secret because she married Caesar and knew he had no chance with her.

Another thought (and this is highly unlikely but still): In the wild, chimps would have multiple mates (Rocket in Rise for example) so there's also a (tiny) chance that Caesar could (in theory) be married to both Cornelia AND Koba-I have never heard of this particular thing happening and I’m not sure if the Caba and/or the Koba x Cornelia shippings are popular enough to warrant that sort of dynamic but it would make an interesting fanfic.

For those who don’t know, Pope is the main villain from the Dawn comics. He’s very similar to Koba (as they’re both apes that came from labs) but worse as he enslaved primitive apes and saw them as lesser beings-going as far as calling them ‘stupid animals’.

Anyway, me and a friend made this one up a while back in our discussions and, from what I remember, we had two or three(?) different scenarios for this shipping.

One being that since they were both abused and tortured by humans, they may find comfort in each other (finding it easy to show vulnerability to someone who’s equally damaged) and fall in love from their shared experiences.

In the comic, Pope’s past is only hinted by Koba when he says: “He was like me…A lab ape. Bad Things, maybe worse.” and then his past is never mentioned of again however, Pope does say: “Never show weakness.” after the killing of a human later in the comic. Based on that, it’s reasonable to suspect that Pope may harbor a similar hatred to humans as Koba does and may suffer from demons of his own but keeps it well hidden from other apes.

Two being more about their personalities: Both Koba and Pope are capable of hurting people (as seen when Koba killed Ash and shot Caesar and Maurice in Dawn and when Pope killed the alpha, killed Fifer and Cora and enslaved all the primitive apes in the comic) and both are described by the PoTA Fandom Wiki as ‘cruel and tyrannical’ (with Koba being described as ‘belittling’, ‘unstable’ and ‘manipulative’ and Pope as ‘immoral’, ‘arrogant’ and ‘egomaniacal’).

Considering these traits, it wouldn’t be too hard to imagine one of them to perceive the other’s vulnerability as ‘weakness’ and actually abuse the other (like Pope abusing Koba or Koba abusing Pope). Based on their personalities, it’s possible the kind of abuse they’d inflict on each other would likely be physical, emotional, or mental abuse (or all three).

Third (and this is more of continuation of the second one!), even if Koba and Pope weren’t abusing each other, their relationship would likely be argumentative, unhealthy, troubling, rough and just very dysfunctional.

These are two very damaged apes with traumas that were not properly dealt with or given help for and full of pent up rage and hate towards humans (plus Pope hated Caesar and disrespected his rule). If they were to be a couple, their own traumas and hatred would feed off of each other and may, inadvertently, make it worse (this would likely not be a problem if Pope and Koba were with other people as a person who doesn’t have the same experiences or resentment as them would likely help ‘heal’ them). Maybe their relationship could work but they may need therapy (psychotherapy and/or couple therapy) before it gets there.

Eeeeeek! This one is my second favorite! I can’t wait to share this dynamic! :D

Both gorillas are first seen in Revelations. Red being manipulative, defiant, aggressive and violent (as shown when he manipulated Grey, lead the soldiers to the building where the colony was hiding in, tried to kill Cornelia (twice and one being while she was trying to help another female ape give birth!) and also when he slapped Cedar) and Winter being fearful and timid (as seen when he faced the wall after the building next to the colony’s hiding place was blown up and when he failed to kill Cornelia (which Red manipulated him into trying to do anyway)). Both are seen again in War, where Winter proves himself as a coward and Red a traitor.

Needless to say, both of these gorillas have very different personality types. The interactions they had both in Revelations and in War weren’t enough to say they were friends (let alone romantically involved) however, Red clearly knew Winter was easy to control. Why else would he consistently manipulate him? And Winter appeared to be afraid of Red. This could be because Red was more aggressive than him and Winter feared confrontation.

However, there’s a lot about the two gorillas that were never revealed (backstory wise. I actually do have a backstory theory for Red but that’s a post for another day). For example, Red was shown to have a lot of anger built up in him and while it is believed to be due to Caesar killing Koba, it feels much deeper than that.

Koba was only leader for a day and or two (or less, my math isn’t great) and Red was willing to kill Cornelia, manipulate and endanger other apes and betray the colony over that? No, this anger didn’t develop overnight. It had to have been there BEFORE Dawn (and it somehow has something to do with Caesar)!

Then there’s Winter. We know his father died before he was born but we don’t know how or what his relationship was/the whereabouts of his mother (this does open the door for speculation of whether or not the circumstances of his father’s death and the relationship he had with his mother could have anything to do with Winter’s fearfulness).

Finally, their relationship: What if Red’s anger and hate was all a mask? What if, deep down inside, he was actually a very hurt, troubled and damaged person and only knew how to show it through anger? And what if Winter’s greatest flaw was actually his strength? Winter was more open about his feelings in both Revelation and in War (whether it be fear, shock, or worry) while Red was very closed off.

What if that difference was what originally attracted Winter to Red? What if Winter, despite being intimidated by Red, viewed him as mysterious and was drawn to him by that. Meanwhile, what if Red was secretly jealous of Winter being so open about his vulnerabilities-even if he knew others would look down on him for it.

With all that said (sorry it was that long!), Red and Winter’s relationship would be built on shared (either expressed or hidden) vulnerabilities and traumatic experiences. Both have flaws and neither of them are weak. They just depend on each other for strength and (in one-shots where they survive War) for belonging as they have no one else.

This is another shipping I’ve only seen briefly-I’m not sure if there are any role-plays of it on Tumblr (but then again I never really looked either!) but there is a fanfic or two out there of this pairing (again, if I miss something a detail regarding this shipping, please let me know!).

Ash is first seen in Dawn when he and Blue Eyes are fishing together. Right away, it’s pretty clear these two are close friends and likely grew up together (which would make sense as their fathers are so close). Based on the interactions between him and Blue Eyes in that scene and the council meeting scene, Ash can be described as humorous (such as when he poked at Blue Eyes) and confident in himself (like when he was teasing Blue Eyes over the bear incident) and Blue Eyes, is protective of him as he (presumably) protected him from Carver before Rocket and the other apes intervened.

Blue Eyes is left devastated and deeply hurt after Ash’s death and, throughout Revelations, thinks about him constantly and later having a dream about him.

Since I don’t know that much about this pairing, this is where the guesswork comes in: As these two grew up together, it’s more than likely they also knew each other on a deeper level than their parents did-for example, Blue Eyes could have told Ash all his secrets, whatever worries or fears he had, maybe ranted to him about his anger and frustrations with his father or about being prince.

I don’t know if Ash had any issues with his parents (as he and Rocket appeared to be very close as father and son-and we don’t really see Ash interacting with Tinker) but if he ever had a bad day, he’d likely talk to Blue Eyes about it just like Blue Eyes would.

This relationship would be founded on childhood friendship, turned best friends, into lovers. Likely turning into a ‘you’re the only person I trust with my secrets’ kind of relationship while also being a very supportive and protective kind of relationship too.

I dabbled on this one in my Whumptober one-shots but if anyone’s interested in more of this shipping, there’s a few on AO3 (it’s easily the black sheep of this list but I think it deserves a place here for clarification as to what this shipping could be versus what it sounds like). It’s a weird pairing but it’s worth checking out!

I think we all know Colonel McCullough as the most evil human in the reboot movies (as he is willing to kill apes and any human who is infected with the virus-his own son for example) and seeing how he treated Caesar in War (chaining him up, forcing him and the ape colony to work, having him whipped and tied to a cross with no food or water for days, killing Cornelia and Blue Eyes) it’s easy to see why this shipping would raise eyebrows but it all depends on how one looks at it.

For example, I see the shipping as a possible twist on War: As the war between the apes and AO soldiers unfold, McCullough’s desire to capture and/or kill Caesar turns into something else. He becomes obsessed with the Ape King and decides the best way to defeat him and get rid of the apes would be to destroy Caesar’s life. So he deliberately kills Cornelia and Blue Eyes knowing it will provoke Caesar to go after him and later in the base when McCullough has Red and Preacher bring Caesar to his office, he blackmails Caesar into marrying him (saying that he’ll let the colony live if he agrees).

As a result of it, Caesar becomes McCullough’s “chimp-wife” and is a prisoner in this forced marriage, the ape colony thinks he’s abandoned and/or betrayed them, the AO soldiers and the Donkeys are confused by the whole thing and Red and Preacher (who witnessed the Colonel’s blackmailing marriage proposal to Caesar) are thinking “WTF is happening here?”.

Another way one could see this shipping would be as something funny. Yes, it’s dysfunctional but that could be the point! If one wanted to make a fanfic of this shipping, they could use the dysfunctional aspects of the relationship and make it funny. Think Marge and Homer Simpson for example.

For those who have an issue with this shipping, I 100% agree this relationship would be doomed from the start (if we decide to take it seriously). If McCullough and Caesar were to be married, I can picture the Colonel being abusive and predigest towards Caesar and his species, blaming him for all things wrong in the world (such as the virus, the fall of the human race), likely never showing any love or affection towards Caesar, and poor Caesar would become depressed and miserable from this awful marriage.

To be honest, I’m not sure if Bon was really this close to Pope as he only appeared once or twice in the Dawn comics BUT! he was one of his loyal followers and while it is possible he only disagreed with Caesar’s rule, there’s another chance that he may have had feelings for Pope (much like my description of the Stone x Koba shipping).

For those who didn’t read the comics, let me sum up the interactions between these two: Bon was one of Pope’s followers and is seen returning back to the zoo after (unsuccessfully) searching for an ape named Fifer who escaped them and informs Pope that there are humans nearby. Bon also took part in the battle between Pope and Koba and was later banished along with Pope’s followers while the primitive apes followed Koba back to the Ape Village.

As this shipping, almost no leg to stand on (and is more made up than the others on this list) allow me to explain it here: Much like Grey and Stone towards Koba, Bon (and a gorilla named Rex) followed Pope-presumably because they also disliked Caesar and/or his rule. As Pope didn’t actually plan on killing Caesar until later in the comics and didn’t realize there were primitive apes, in the beginning, I don’t think there was any manipulation going on from him.

Now let’s look at Pope for a second: Pope was an ape who looked down upon anyone who showed weakness or was primitive and had no problem with enslaving, torturing, endangering or murdering other apes. Like I said in my description for the Koba x Pope shipping, Pope was also a lab ape (with fishnet scars on the left side of his face, shoulder and chest giving us a hint as to what he was put through-though it’s never actually discussed) so it is reasonable to imagine he may have his own demons and traumas, much like Koba does (unsurprisingly, Pope also hates humans).

The thing about Pope that I’m curious about is if he is traumatized from what had been done to him at the hands of humans, does he show it? He likely doesn’t as he appears to dislike seeing it and other apes showing weakness but that would mean that, much like Koba, he’s holding things back, probably much more than Koba was (as Koba is seen in Dawn talking (briefly) about what he went through with humans to Caesar).

Now looking at Pope and Bon, it makes me wonder if Bon could have picked up on that. Like what if Bon saw the pain that Pope was covering up and reached out to him?

That, and it is also possible Bon was into the ‘bad boy’ type.

This is why only a handful of scholars get to become the best of CAs. and there is literally no bad at that. Each one of us is different and brilliant in our fields. Now you must be wondering the whole reason behind this session of TEDTalk. So, while scrolling Reddit a couple of days ago, I came across a post that haunted me for hours. It was about how an amazingly talented photographer was embarrassed about successfully doing his business because of the lack of some admin skills.

I wondered how this must be a problem of many who do not say it. This seemingly minor obstacle became a major problem for someone to be successful. I could not control but sharing this with everyone who is facing these problems.

But, first, please read the exact situation

“I’ve been working for a company led by a successful photographer in the UK for a few years until about a year ago when I left the country for personal reasons. I’ve remained close to the company and started doing freelance work for them as a photographer, doing behind the scenes photography, and work on other projects. It is however really hard for me to set my own prices as I haven’t done freelance work before and don’t really know how to break down my costs and adjusting my rates, as I’ve been offered 200£ one time and 2000£ another time for projects that took about the same amount of work. A lot of the jobs I’ve been getting are also very spontaneous, asking me to fly out on location within just a few days so there often isn’t much time for preparation.

So when it comes down to sending my invoices I end up procrastinating and building up anxiety about it to the point where I’ve just ended up doing work for free a couple of times already. I’ve asked other photographer friends what their process is but never really managed to get a proper response from them and I just get ashamed to tell them how helpless I am. I really love my work but I’m embarrassed by my lack of professionalism when it comes to the admin side of it and it’s making me doubt if I should even pursue this career or just find regular employment again. I’m taking this to Reddit hoping that I could maybe get some pointers in the right direction.”

Lump-sum billing– for collectively charging prices for the project. It is basically for bigger projects including many folds of project management.

Up-set billing– a combination of time-cost and lump-sum billing, up-set billing is about charging a lump-sum to work in a particular time frame.

Question 2- What factors to take into consideration while deciding cost?

It might not seem important at first, but how you invoice photography clients can have a big impact on the success of a job, and your profit margin.

A key factor/tip that will be directly relatable to your business is bill your clients three or four times more the payment amount you want to take home. There is nothing unethical about it. Because this cost will include all your other costs associated. For say, if you want to take $25 at the end of the day home, bill your clients $100 to $105. This amount will help you cover up all the costs that you have invested and later take back home the desired income you want to. Some photographers contrast to the hourly billing and suggest it is not the best way, but it is important as a photographer to value your time and bill on the basis of hours invested.

On the other hand, the other most chosen method of billing clients is billing for products. Ie. prints, books, photos, etc. it is generally a totally different billing segment and not mixed with time-based billing.

In a photography business, an invoice is generally split into two parts- the cost to do the work (taking pictures) and the cost to use the pictures(picture licensing).

Therefore, when you bill next time, make sure you are taking into consideration both of the most important factors and reduce invoicing related stress.

Question 3- How much to worth your services?

A photography business is one of the most diverse business segments in the society out there. Where getting appreciated and acknowledged is a long road to achieving achieve. Therefore, if you will not value your pieces of art, no one out there will ever too.

Pacific Rim AU pt. 1

Word spread quickly around the Shatterdome: her father had returned from the Coastal Wall- successfully. An anticipatory buzz swept through the compound as everyone prepared for the new arrival. The Jaeger program was gearing up once again.

Things were changing quickly, including Allura. She threw shirt after shirt across the room, digging like a madwoman until she found what she was looking for. A record two minutes later she was flattening the lapels of her coat, grabbing an umbrella and pausing for a quick survey in the mirror. Black on black on black on black. Hair tied neatly back.

Professional? Yes. Dramatic? Sure, but who could blame her? It wasn’t every day she met an internationally renowned Jaeger pilot and girlhood crush for the first time in years. With one last glance and a determined huff, she grabbed her father’s itinerary and marched out, the door slamming shut behind her.

The Shatterdome slowly came into focus in the driving rain. The words, Alfor’s words, that had followed him from the Wall echoed in his ears once again:

“Where would you rather die? Here, or in a Jaeger?”

He had made his choice, decided to return to everything and everyone he had abandoned years ago.

He was terrified.

Shiro stepped out of the helicopter, pausing to draw a deep breath of Hong Kong air as the wind and rain whipped his face. The roaring clang of the Shatterdome hit him, igniting something in his chest. It was good to be back.

There was no time, however, for any personal reflection, as Alfor immediately started striding toward a figure across the landing pad. “There’s someone I’d like you to meet-” Alfor called back to him. Some interaction occurred behind his back, before Alfor ducked under an umbrella and handed one to Shiro. “This is Allura, one of our brightest.”

Curtains of black parted and two faces— familiar as five years apart could keep them— were revealed to one another.

Shiro couldn’t stop his eyebrows from raising, his mouth from parting. Memories flashed in his mind; a shock of white hair in the background of meetings and training sessions, a girlish face and shrill voice reminding him and Matt that it was curfew, a fire that flashed in the eyes of a teenager who wanted nothing more than to fight but lived under the thumb of someone who had already lost too much— But what confronted his gaze now was a maturely set face (that reflected his own expression) and a steady gaze, tempered with age and now distinguished as the brightest. “Yes, I remember.”

One of the advantages of adulthood, Allura decided, was the ability to overcome embarrassment. No schoolgirl blush colored her cheeks when she met his eyes, as it had in the old days, before a shock of his hair was bleached with stress and trauma, before his strong chin was shaded with stubble, before they met as equals under gathering storm clouds.

Their stupors were only momentary.

She leaned over to her father, who seemed to be reveling in the satisfaction of having his two proteges under one roof again, and murmured in accented Cantonese, “I imagined him differently.”

Shiro just caught the words during a lull in the wind. He leaned forward, a smile pulling at the corner of his mouth. “Better or worse?”

Allura’s expression stuttered for a moment, her eyes flickering to Alfor, before she gave a lighthearted smile. “My apologizes, Mr. Shirogane. It’s nice to see you again.”

“Please- Shiro.” She nodded. “So, I hear you’ve been working on Kerberos?”

Alfor cut in, “-We have a lot to discuss, inside.”

Everything was going wrong.

Shiro wasn’t sure what he expected; that he would waltz into the Shatterdome, have a beautiful reunion with the kid brother he had abandoned in a spiraling mental state, bump right into a new drift partner and have all his deep seated, debilitating fears be wiped clean by…Jaeger magic?

At least he still knew how to make himself laugh.

Going to the gym helped, if only a little. Something about running until he couldn’t anymore helped ease the tension from the screaming matches he had gotten into with Keith and Alfor that day. Go figure.

But the real cherry on the shit cake that was his life was Allura. (There was probably a more delicate way to put that.) Everything seemed to circle back to her. More specifically, to their sparring match during his trials. He had sensed something between them, in the little time they had to get reacquainted; there was an understanding, and her eyes still had that fire. But he couldn’t think straight, couldn’t sort anything out through the fog that clouded his mind and his heart.

Matt would know what to do. Wasn’t that the whole problem?

A sudden swell of emotion weighed heavily on Shiro’s chest.

Fuck.

Allura could hear footsteps approaching from down the hall. Her forehead, still pressed against the door as her breathing slowed, picked up soft vibrations. Her hand wiped away any remaining moisture from her cheeks.

It had been a long week.

She pressed her eye to the peephole just soon enough to see that shock of white hair disappear into the room across the hall. She jumped when the door slammed shut behind him, its metallic clang echoing through the hall, just as hers had minutes before. Their neighbors must hate them.

It took a few minutes of pacing for her to gather up the courage to put her hand on the door handle. Maybe he didn’t want to be disturbed. Maybe he’d welcome her concern. Maybe he’d be annoyed by her.

Why was she so intimidated by him? If anything, their match during tryouts had proven that they were equals, on the same playing field. She had certainly been precocious enough that day, challenging him in the ring in front of everyone; but then, her father disapproved (to put it lightly,) and Shiro suddenly became distant, losing the spark she had seen in his eyes when their staffs locked. Of course, she could guess the reason behind his behavior— she was standing beside her father when the images of Shiro, mangled on the Alaskan coast, came back to the Shatterdome.

But still, Allura couldn’t forget about their trial match.

She glanced at the crinkled picture that sat on her desk, where a little girl with white pigtails smiled out at her. In a burst of bravery she was out in the hall, her knuckles rapping against the half rustled portal.

Shiro opened the door slowly, expecting to find his little brother’s face glaring up at him. Instead, it was Allura, looking concerned and hesitant. His face softened. “Oh- hey, Allura-”

“I’m sorry to bother you, I just-” her eyes flitted around the hallway, as if looking for a sudden escape from a terrible decision.

Shiro adjusted his posture, stepping back from the doorway and unfolding his arms. “No, no- please, come in.” He could see her eyes scanning the room as she entered, filing away any information she could glean from the personal mementos that sparsely dotted the walls. The bed creaked under his weight as he perched on its edge, waiting for her to speak.

Finally, she met his gaze: no going back, no escape, now that his eyes were trained on her, brows raised expectantly, door shut behind her. “I think we’ve been avoiding each other all week,” she stated plainly.

A hollow puff of air escaped him- almost a laugh. He ran a hand through his hair, about to defend himself; but, the words didn’t come. Instead, he gave a dry smile, admitting, “I know.”

“I know I picked your trial co-pilots, and on paper they should’ve worked, but-”

“-But I was under performing?” Shiro smirked.

A smile pulled at the corner of Allura’s mouth. “They were the wrong partners.”

The words sparked something in Shiro, pushing him to say what had been crouching in the back of his consciousness. He leaned forward, animation coming into his face. “But you weren’t. I mean, am I crazy? Or are we drift compatible?”

Drift compatible. Part of him still squirmed when he used it toward someone other than Matt, but the growing feeling in his gut was telling him he couldn’t be afraid of it anymore.

Allura met his eyes, pausing before she said, “No, you’re not crazy.” Slow smiles spread over their faces. “But-”

“-But, your father?”

She sighed, moving to sit next to Shiro on the bed. Her hands gripped her knees, sure to keep them from touching his. “I’ve wanted nothing else but to pilot a Jaeger for so long, but he wants to protect me. And I respect him.”

Shiro moved to face her, his brow furrowed. “Does he respect you? You’re the smartest pilot in the program, you had me on the ropes in thirty seconds, and you’re not a little girl anym-”

“I know that,” Allura interrupted sharply, “But there’s more to it. You of all people should know that.”

Shiro’s face fell, but he sucked in a breath, fighting off the fog that had been holding him back all week. “I know the dangers of drifting better than anyone here. I’ve got a lot of issues, there’s no denying that- and yes, I’m scared- but I can handle myself. And I think we would make a great team.” He reached out, not quite brushing her knuckles as he laid a gentle hand on her arm.

She didn’t like this new feeling, that he was trying to read her every time their eyes met; and worse, that he could read her. “It’s not just you- there’s things you don’t know about me that could…get in the way.”

Shiro drew back, chuckling to himself. “It’s not you, it’s me- not the first time I’ve heard that.”

Allura snorted. “You know what I meant.”

“We both have a lot to sort through,” Shiro’s tone softened, his face becoming serious, “But when all that comes flooding back, in the Jaeger, we won’t be alone. Don’t forget that.” Allura’s crystalline eyes blinked at him, as if she didn’t quite believe what he said; but behind all the doubt, he could still see the sharpness that defined her from the rest of the recruits. She didn’t answer, but Shiro felt a reciprocal pressure on his hand that rested between them.

They tend to think “I have too much to do and not enough time,” or, the reverse: “I should be doing so much more than I am currently doing,” said Zakeri, LCSW, a therapist in private practice in the Chicago area whose passion is to help people figure out what’s wrong and help them feel better again.

Everyone worries. Some of us worry more than others. Some of us wake up worrying. Some of us fall asleep to the sound of worry bumping around in our brains.

This is when writing can help. A lot.

According to Sarah Allen, Ph.D., a Chicago-area clinical psychologist who specializes in anxiety treatment, a typical worry process looks like this: We have a negative or scary thought about a situation. Our amygdala shouts “Emergency! Emergency!” and kick-starts various physical changes. It releases adrenaline, producing a stress response in the body—such as muscle tension, increased heartbeat, and faster breathing. The adrenaline also affects our mind, making our thoughts race, and travel like a merry-go-round, “building up a catastrophic story of what we tell ourselves is ‘true.’”

What writing does, Allen said, is to help us see in black and white exactly what’s bothering us. It allows us “to be more objective and not just believe everything [we] feel strongly about.”

Writing down our worries also helps to interrupt the worry cycle, said Sarah Neustadter, Psy.D, a clinical and spiritual psychologist based in Los Angeles, who specializes in spiritual growth, suicide survivor grief, suicide prevention, grief, loss, existential heartbreak, and millennial issues. It helps us see more clearly, to intentionally find other thoughts to think, and to reconnect to the present moment, she said.

“We can usually find that simply sitting with pen and paper, writing in this very moment as if it’s a form of meditation, makes everything OK,” Neustadter said.

There are so many ways we can use writing to cope with our worries. Below, you’ll find eight writing exercises to try.

Start a daily journaling practice. For Neustadter, author of the book Love You Like the Sky: Surviving the Suicide of a Beloved, journaling every morning helps her navigate her worrisome thoughts. “It allows me to be in conversation with myself, be my own best friend, and to see the variables of a problem or situation more clearly. And then through my writing, I’m able to problem solve and identify what actions steps I need to take. [I am also able to] self- soothe through positive self-talk and reassuring myself that all is well regardless of my worries.”

For instance, she might jot down the many tasks she’s worried about—remodeling her balcony because of water leaks, dealing with insurance, paying the construction bill, needing to get her mercury fillings replaced, planning an event, scheduling a trip to New York City for a month, and finding a house-sitter.

After jotting down her worries and frustrations, Neustadter asks herself these questions, and writes the answers that arise: “What is the priority here?” or “What do I need right now to feel supported?” “I also reassure myself that everything will get done in the right time, and I only need to do one thing at a time.”

Distinguish between useful worry and unhelpful worry. “A lot of worries are about the future and writing them down identifies whether they are ‘what-if’ type of worries that probably won’t really happen, or something that has a potential solution,” Allen said.

That is, she noted that worry can be useful and spark action, which she calls “active or useful worry.” However, all-too often, we worry about things that can’t be changed or aren’t even a real problem—“just a scary, imagined ‘what-if’ that rarely even happens.”

Allen suggested putting all your worries on paper—“no matter how small or silly it sounds.” Then ask yourself these questions, she said: “Is this something I always worry about, but nothing ever happens?” “Will my worrying make this situation better or worse or have no effect at all?”

Split worries into what you can and can’t control. Similarly, Zakeri suggested folding a piece of paper lengthwise. On one side, write the worries that you have control over (e.g., “I’m worried my husband is mad at me.” You can talk to your husband and resolve the issue). On the other side, write the worries that you don’t have control over (e.g., “I’m worried it’ll rain on Saturday”).

Refocus on realistic solutions. When Tyra Manning would get stuck in a worry loop, she learned to write down her fears and feelings on the page. “As I contemplated each item I had written, I wrote a hopeful and realistic response to each worry listed.” For instance, when Manning’s husband was killed in Vietnam, she worried that she wouldn’t be able to support their young daughter. She worried she couldn’t afford to pay a sitter and pay her college tuition.

So Manning, an educator and author of the forthcoming book Your Turn: Ways to Celebrate Life Through Storytelling, wrote down a realistic, detailed budget that she could follow (and did).

She also worried that she “couldn’t provide enough love much less spend enough time” with her daughter because of the “endless hours” she was spending on completing her college degree. Again, she turned to writing, creating a schedule for her and her daughter to savor the weekends. These weekend outings strengthened their bond and, most importantly, Manning said, her daughter “knew she was loved.”

Consider these three categories. Zakeri also suggested creating three different columns: Need, Want, and Should. Then cross off the shoulds because they can wait. She shared this example: You need to pick up your child from school. You want to grab a snack with them. But you should skip the snack, and go to the drycleaners. Unless you need that suit tomorrow, the drycleaners can wait.

Keep paper and a pen on your nightstand. If you’re having trouble falling asleep because of your worries, jot them down, Zakeri said. She noted that this accomplishes two things: “It empties your head, and it reassures you won’t forget whatever it is that was keeping you up.”

Make an A and B list. This is another way to clarify your priorities, and get organized. According to Zakeri, A represents the non-negotiable tasks you’re worried about that must be accomplished today. B represents the worries that can wait until tomorrow. “Knowing they are ‘on your list’ can be relieving, but also knowing you are not focusing on them until A list is done can be relieving.”

Create a gratitude list. “In order to remind myself that all is well and of the blessings in my life, I’ll often make a list of the things I’m grateful for,” Neustadter said. “By seeing a list of the things that are working in my life, it allows me to refocus and prioritize what really matters, and thus reduces my worry.” For instance, her list might include everything from flowers and birds chirping to her health and family to running water and shelter.

Our worrisome thoughts can feel big, urgent, and uncontrollable. As Manning said, it can feel like we’re “getting caught in a whirlpool.” While we might not be drowning physically, we’re drowning in negative chatter, she said.

Even though our worries can feel overwhelming, we can shrink them. We can channel them into solutions—or we can reveal them for what they are: unhelpful, unreasonable, and illogical.

The key is to know the difference.

When Manning struggled to come up with positive responses to her worries, she turned to the Serenity Prayer.

“It became my mantra when I got sober through the good graces of members of my support group. They told me to say it five times out loud and if that didn’t work to start over. When I said the words out loud, it caused me to think about what I was saying. When I contemplated the meaning of the prayer, my brain couldn’t hold my worries in my head,” Manning said.

And, over time, the below words spoke louder than her worry:

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change The courage to change the things I can And the wisdom to know the difference.”
