picturing Dustin watching at the trailer park, right after Eddie says, “Hey, Steve? Make him pay.”
And for some reason Dustin’s reminded of ‘84, of his conversation with Steve on the railroad tracks, it’s like before it’s gonna storm, you know? You can’t see it, but you can feel it, like this, uh... electricity, you know?—although he’s grown enough to suspect that Steve might not know everything in that regard.
And it’s not electricity he senses, not exactly, but it’s definitely a storm of some kind: something fragile. Something—someone—that’s very scared.
Dustin’s running before he’s even registered his decision. “Steve!”
Steve turns around, and he already looks like he’s about to ask a question—something practical, like whether Dustin’s forgotten something—and Dustin feels a twist of regret, that that’s where Steve’s mind goes; yeah, they’re all ready for battle, so it makes sense, but…
Feeling suddenly very young, Dustin barrels into Steve and hugs him.
He hears Steve’s surprised inhale, his hesitancy, before he returns the hug in full force.
For a little while, it’s like the world narrows down to only this. No ash in the air, no nightmarish red in the sky. Just the two of them.
Dustin’s about to pull away when he feels Steve’s chin dig into the top of his head. Hears him sniff, very quietly, like he’s trying to hide it; and that makes Dustin think of the tunnels, or afterwards, really, when Steve held onto him with shaking hands, kept saying, “We’re okay, we’re okay.”
So he just keeps hugging back.
Steve’s the one to let go; he’s smiling, but he looks a little sad too, forehead creased with worry.
“I need a ride tomorrow,” Dustin says.
Steve huffs. “Oh, yeah? Where to?”
Dustin taps his nose obnoxiously. “That’s for me to know and you to find out.”
It’s bullshit, of course; Dustin doesn’t need a ride anywhere.
Steve rolls his eyes, but some tightness in his jaw finally eases. “God, you’re such a dick.”
“Bright and early, Steve!” Dustin adds smugly. “Five am!”
“Yeah, yeah,” Steve says, waving him off, and for a moment it’s like they’re just in the school parking lot. He looks as if he’s about to say something else, then thinks better of it—glances back to where Robin and Nancy are waiting. He pulls Dustin in with one arm, a brief but tight hold. Nods, as if to himself. “Go on, scram.”
Dustin runs back to the trailer with a stitch in his side but a smile on his face. He knows it’s naive to think he can fix everything, but in this moment at least some part of the universe has been righted, even while in The Upside Down.
Eddie’s standing right where he left him, like he’s been frozen the whole time.
“Hey,” he says quietly. “is he, uh… is he okay?”
Dustin’s reminded that of course, Steve isn’t the only one who’s scared.
“Yeah, he will be,” he says, which he thinks is a more accurate answer than a simple yes or no.
It’s funny how life works, he muses while gathering supplies for the trailer defences. There’s no way he’d have thought even a week ago that Eddie would be sincerely asking him about Steve’s well-being. Whenever he happened to bring Steve up at Hellfire, Eddie would imitate him in a comedic falsetto, “Oh, Steve this, Steve that.”
For a minute, Eddie remains rooted to the spot, still staring in the direction of where Steve went—like he’d watched helplessly as Steve walked into the eye of a storm or something.
“You just gonna stand there and gawk?” Dustin says.
Eddie snorts. “So rude, Henderson.”
And it’s not like Dustin really knows, not when Steve and Eddie are still barely dancing around it themselves. Still, he can pick up on some things.
Like when they’ve finished setting up everything, waiting for the go-ahead for Eddie to start playing his guitar—to pass the time, they recount the high points of the day, keep it light. It’s a practice Eddie used to implement after campaigns.
And look, Dustin’s damn good at picking up on patterns. Like, he loves Steve, but he’s pretty sure the reality of him driving the hotwired RV doesn’t quite match up to how Eddie’s currently waxing lyrical about it.
He’s making it sound like it was something outta James Bond, Dustin thinks, when he’s sure Steve drove right into several trash cans.
Suddenly he knows exactly what he should do.
“Steve this, Steve that,” he sing-songs.
Eddie flushes; Dustin cackles.
“Fuck off,” Eddie says, but he’s smiling as Dustin keeps laughing, like he knows there’s nothing mean-spirited in it. He keeps going, Steve this, Steve that, talking right over Dustin’s teasing—somehow finding even more moments where Steve truly shines.
And Dustin doesn’t know everything, not even close, but at the very least, he knows that this feels right.

I think it's easy to write off Whizzer Going Down as the haha funny gay sex song, and don't get me wrong, it totally is funny and silly, but I feel like we're all forgetting how genuinely beautiful it is.
Its a song about a repressed gay man finally getting to express himself and be with who he wants. It shows Marvin finally accepting that he wants men, and Allowing himself to be with one. It's the first time we see Marvin really, truly happy. It's not a "giddy seizure" or bid for attention, he's really genuinely celebrating life and love and being utterly over the moon about Whizzer and his new-found sexual freedom.
He calls what he has with Whizzer delightful, he loves it so much he says he might just die. Even though they're already fighting, he admits he cares for Whizzer & truly celebrates him.
The name "Whizzer" is said over and over and over again in the song. The other characters in in Trousers don't even get names. Just "wife" or "sweetheart" (except Ms Goldberg, who still doesn't have a first name). But Marvin repeats "Whizzer" so so much because for the first time, he found someone who he truly cares about, who Matters to him. Even though falsettos shows us how toxic they'll turn out to be later, it's still utterly beautiful to see this side of Marvin- how he can learn to love and care and celebrate life and his sexuality- even if it's still going to be a long journey.

Rewatching Falsettos I was suddenly struck by an epiphany that I’m sure someone else has had at some point, but I needed to write out. This ending scene from “March of the Falsettos” jumped out at me from the first watching, but even though I recognised the nod to the “See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil (and lesser known do no evil)”, I didn’t know what it meant. Today, I tried to piece it together, and I think I’ve gotten it. These poses represent core attributes of the characters, as well as Trina’s view of them, so click the read more to hear the ravings of a mad man wayyyyyy too obsessed with this show

The idea of ‘evil’ to me is very loose. It can represent a lot of things for these characters; their actions towards each other, their character flaws, etc. But, for this analysis, one can replace ‘evil’ with ‘truth’. Each of the characters refuses to see, speak, hear, or ‘do’ the truth (please excuse the lack of grammar for that last one), and that is where the ‘evil’ stems from. Taking into account this is mostly based on Trina’s view of the men, I think ‘truth’ fits in well.
Let’s start with the one who fits in least— Jason. “March of the Falsettos” is a physical manifestation of how Trina views the men in her life (as childish and immature), but some slack is given to her son. He doesn’t sing his lines in falsetto, because we acknowledge he is in fact a child, and has more of an excuse to act as such. So, take his analysis with a grain of salt. The boy has every right to be a little selfish— he’s 10.
So, Jason has his hands over his eyes, representing ‘See No Evil’. This is a direct nod to his character flaw; his view of the world with him at the center. Although his parents are less than good to him, he still sees them through unfair lenses— ‘My mother’s no wife/My father’s no man’. He sings ‘everybody’s yelling and everybody’s ruining it’ in “Everyone Hates His Parents” because he is unhappy with how his Bar Mitzvah is turning out and wants to simply cancel it. He doesn’t have a concept of doing things for other people (again, he’s a child, I’m not blaming him per se), so he is blind to the will of others and refuses to see their side. In addition to this, even when Mendel tells him Whizzer will most likely die, Jason pleads with G-d to save him. He still views himself as the center of his world, thus Mendel’s line ‘Life’s not all about him’.
In addition to this, his ‘See No Evil’ means something when thought about from Trina’s perspective. She thinks her son is blind to the truth of the world, this son who stays inside playing chess alone, this son who ‘seems like an idiot to [Trina]’. She worries Jason will turn out like these other men in her world, blind to everyone but himself.
Now we come to Mendel, who has his hand over his mouth in ‘Speak No Evil’. Mendel’s flaw throughout the show is his refusal to accept the truth of any situation. He tells Jason to ‘feel alright for the rest of your life’ instead of actually trying to help, he is ‘frightened of questions’, he repeats over and over ‘I’ll make you well’ to Whizzer in the hospital. He will never say anything negative, nor will he allow others to do so. Even in the end of the show, he tells Jason they don’t know ‘when or if’ Whizzer will get better— he is still not accepting that it’s a definite thing. He believes that if he and those around him just don’t speak about the real problems, they’ll go away.
Trina’s view on Mendel is complicated here. In the next song she agrees to marry him, of course, and we know she at least likes him (the most of all three adults she knows). She says that Mendel ‘decides the role to assume’. She looks down on the fact that he can’t speak the truth to her, that he’s expecting this happy wife, this perfect new family. He wants her to play along with him and make their home together, even if she sings ‘liking our lives’ instead of loving. Even if he’s better than Marvin ever was, there’s still an element of control here. Mendel wants this family, and he wants them to all pretend nothing is ever wrong again.
Marvin, our titular character, is in the ‘Hear No Evil’ position. This one is fairly straight forward— he wants control and will never listen to the needs of those around him. He can’t hear what they actually need, he simply does what he wants. He also struggles with his masculinity throughout Act 1, his outward misogyny and need for the nuclear family (his treatment of Trina and Whizzer), so he imagines himself at the top of his family system. He will never take any other opinions, or counsel, in his decisions, seeing that as weakness. He’s similar to Jason in this regard, as he only hears what he wants to (like Jason only sees what he wants). He ignores the pain around him to pursue his own desires, he covers his ears and moves on.
Trina, of course, despises Marvin at this point in the show. Her subconscious showing Marvin in ‘Hear No Evil’ can tell us a lot about their relationship, how she was never seen as equal in decisions. Marvin always put her to the side, not listening to her needs, acting without thinking of her.
Whizzer is complicated. I’ve seen people laugh at his pose before, saying we’ve got ‘See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil, and Gay’, but I think he represents the ‘Do No Evil’. This final character is not often seen with the other three, and can be depicted with arms over the chest or covering the genitals. It wouldn’t make sense to have Whizzer be the outlier (especially because the fourth depiction of evil does exist), so I’m assuming he is supposed to be ‘Do No Evil’.
This fits in well with Whizzer’s flaws throughout the show. He doesn’t accept responsibility for his relationship with Marvin; seen in the lines ‘I’m not responsible’ during “Late For Dinner” or ‘I will not accept blame’ in “Games I Play”. He sleeps around, despite Marvin wanting monogamy, and clearly did not have an issue hooking up with a married man. Whizzer fundamentally doesn’t think his actions have consequences, he believes he has done nothing wrong (he has done no evil). Whizzer also has a hard time admitting to his love for Marvin. He says it ‘depends on the day’, he flat out says ‘no’ when asked if he loves him. He doesn’t want to show his love for fear of being too vulnerable, so he hides and doesn’t do anything about it.
To take this even further, him being ‘Do No Evil’ can represent his later question of ‘why me of all men’ when he is dying. He hasn’t done anything to deserve his death, and ‘all men get what they deserve’, right?
Moving on to how Trina sees Whizzer. He’s come into her life and ruined her marriage, though she ‘wants to hate him’ she can’t. She views him as the cause of her recent hardships, his actions being to blame. He is ‘Do No Evil’ to her because he has done evil in taking Marvin away (though it is obvious Trina is better off because of it). He has upset the careful balance of her world by breaking down the lies of her marriage and exposing the truth— Marvin never loved her, could never love her. She puts him in ‘Do No Evil’ because what he has done is what the rest of the men won’t— see, hear, speak the truth even at the detriment of her family.
Another way to view this is, of course, the fact that ‘Do No Evil’ is rarely seen with the others. Trina is separating Whizzer from the other men, not putting him in the same category as the rest of the ‘family’. He views himself as an outsider as well, yes he’s part of the group, but only as a technicality. Only as Marvin’s lover. Once he leaves Marvin, he is easily taken out of the equation and the remaining three do not feel the loss.
My conclusion is such: Each of the poses our men do represents the character flaw they must overcome throughout the show, as well as how Trina views them in her mind. I really hope this made any sort of sense, and if someone has already said all of this well… I guess it can’t hurt to be thorough.

Falsettos Food Theory
Okay so someone asked what this is and I really wanna explain! So the falsettos food theory is that food represents love throughout the Marvin trilogy.
In the show, In Trousers, Marvin is very strict about what kind of food he wants, and he gets very upset when he doesn’t get it imminently or the way he wants. For example, in the song ‘How Marvin Eats his Breakfast” there is the lyric,
“No one looks busy in this kitchen
And my breakfast isn't ready
And my stomach aches.”
This is in reference to that no one at that moment is giving him the love that he wants, and that he aches for it. Later in the song he also says ,
“I don't want miracles from heaven
Just some eggies over spinach over toast
No, I will not apologize!
She should win a prize:
Very best emoting
That girl can't cook”
When he says the first line he doesn’t literally mean he just wants a basic breakfast, he means that he doesn’t want much, he just wants to feel loved. By saving “that girl can’t cook” he doesn’t mean she’s lousy at making food, he means that she doesn’t give him the kind of love that he wants. One of the other ladies says
“maybe she can’t cook, but have you seen her milk a cow?” Implying that sexually she “provides” to Marvin, even if he doesn’t romantically like her (obviously this means nothing, just because they can be sexually active does not mean that it is love).
Another one is in Whizzer Going Down he says,
“he hates my wife
I hate his food”.
He’s saying he hates when Whizzer shows him love because he is not ready to accept the fact that he can be loved and he can love another man.
There are many more references of this in the show In Trousers and if anyone wants to hear them I’ll gladly go into it in another post!!
The ones in Falsettos are even more obvious references to love. In the song Tight Knit Family, Marvin sings,
“We all eat as one
Wife, friend, and son
And I sing out as they cook
I love my tight-knit family
I love the way they cook linguine”
They all eat as one meaning they are all receiving love from one another, even if it isn’t good. The next line being “I sing out as they cook” (singing out meaning to say or shout something loudly, most likely implying the unhealthy relationship he’s in with his family) this line is saying that while they provide him love and what ever he asks, he continues to complain about it.
However, in the next line he says “I love the way they cook linguine” which is a considered normal traditional meal for a lot people. This is showing that he enjoys when they provide him with basic normal love, instead of arguing or disagreeing with him.
Another reference later on in the musical is in the ENTIRETY of the song “This Had Better Come To A Stop”. The first set of unique lyrics though is what I’ll cover.
“Whizzer's supposed to always be here
Making dinner, set to screw
That's what pretty boys should do
Check their hairlines, make the dinner
And love me”
This is saying that Whizzer is supposed to always be at Marvin’s command, loving him and giving himself to Marvin sexually at all times. He mentions making dinner twice in these lyrics, again implying that he doesn’t want Whizzers love unless it’s later in the day once he’s gotten his love from his other family ( breakfast specifically).
Another general reference to food equaling love is Cordelia’s entire character. All she does throughout the show is provide food and such to the characters, this being her giving them constant love. Since Cordelia was giving Marvin so much food (presumably) during the two year gap during intermission, we can assume that her unique and (sometimes) not so great food taught him that he doesn’t always get to choose what to eat, but that he should be greatful someone is cooking for him anyway. I think Cordelia is one of the most amazing characters in the story.
For all of the song “Days Like This��� she’s trying to get Whizzer to eat something, meaning she’s trying to share her love with him.
In the song “Jason’s Bar Mitzvah”, Dr. Charlotte says
“She's cooked for some 200 guests
[CORDELIA]
We number not that many
Actually... we're seven”
This shows that she has provided so much love for all of these people, even though there’s only seven. Only a couple lines later, she tries the food Cordelia made, and says that the food “tastes really yummy.” (in the pro shot Trina nods her head to agree).
This is important to me because it shows that Cordelia finally found a way to show/express her love with the rest of the characters, and have them reciprocate it for the first time on stage, showing that they are all at peace and finally love each other.
Just like in trousers there are hundreds of more references in Falsettos so if any of you would like me to go more into it I’d be happy to!
This is all speculation of course, we don’t know if any of this was intentional, buts it’s by far my favorite thing to talk about that’s falsettos related. Hope you enjoyed reading!

would finish his sentence in the most normal voice ever as if he didn’t just scream your name in falsetto
gets weird stares from everyone around you
( adamant to talk to you even though he’s actively falling asleep )
you both fell into the routine of calling each other at night
and even though you can hear him slurring his speech and dosing off he refuses to hang up
would deny to hell and back that he is sleepy
even though you can literally hear him losing consciousness
would eventually hang up on him because the arguing became him saying incoherent words trying to prove himself
guess what: did not prove anything

once saw a tiktok of how to braid hair and fell into a rabbit hole
would randomly try and braid your hair after watching a few youtube tutorials and 100% creates a lot of knots
but you still let him because he’s just so cute when he tries to brush your hair carefully without hurting you (would also give the best scalp messages)
if you have curly/coily hair he’d start asking about your hair type and would loveee helping you when its hair day
camera roll is just filled with pictures of him with bobby pins in his mouth/experimenting on your hair
( intense eye contact )
jay has never had a problem with holding eye contact talking to people
so poor baby was confused when you could barely hold eye contact for a minute
after getting together he’d ask you why you did that, and you had to explain that not everyone can intensely hold eye contact the whole time
also mentioned how him being attractive did not help your case
definitely the type to follow your eyes with his whole face to tease you
also prepare your heart for being on the receiving end of his ‘madly in love’ stare
would stare at you with his pretty boy eyes with so much love and no shame, he couldn’t care less who sees him
SIM JAEYUN

everyone knows jake is a very curious boy
both you and him knew that
so, him asking you questions about everything and anything is normal to you
but after the first few questions you realise, he never fails to look at you expectantly blinking his eyes at a kind of concerning speed
don’t think he even realises he does it
but it’s the cutest thing ever so its okay
could ask you the most out of pocket question then give you puppy eyes blinking at you cutely 
would push you into an existential crisis with his questions about life and debrief you with his blinking

you can never sit down to do anything without suddenly feeling something heavy in your lap
sit down and you’ll be able to distantly hear the sound of someone running full speed to lay on you

PARK SUNGHOON

hoon is a domestic type of boyfriend 
so don’t be surprised when he likes to help you do mundane acts like putting on your coat, opening the door for you
but his favourite thing to do is tie your shoelaces
you don’t know why he likes doing it so much and honestly neither does he
bonus points if the weather is cold and you’re wearing a puffy coat with a scarf and hat practically drowning you 
sometimes he’ll watch you struggle a little when you can’t reach your shoes comfortably before sweeping in to save you
god forbid he sees you let someone else do it, you’ll have to deal with a petty sunghoon for the rest of the day
( squeezing/biting you )
when you first got together he’d randomly lean over to you and squeeze whatever limb is closest to him
sometimes it’s cute like your arm or thigh but sometimes he’s a weirdo and will squeeze your ankle if its close enough
after becoming more comfortable he’d start grabbing you more until one day he bit you
you were both cuddling on the couch watching a movie when you suddenly feel a set of teeth gently bite your cheek
cue him trying to explain himself whilst you stare at him holding your cheek in confusion
it’s a little cute like when he bites softly onto your hand but sometimes it would fucking hurt like the one time he back hugged you and bit you on the back
he suffers from high levels of cuteness aggression so it won’t be the last time he bites you a little too hard
KIM SUNWOO
( watch you do your makeup )
sunoo grew up watching his sister do her makeup in the mirror nearly everyday so of course he’d watch when you do it
would love to see the way you decide what look to do and what colours to pick
make sure to always ask for his input because he loves helping you pick your makeup
a little hesitant to ask to try on you since his sister never let him
would start smiling so hard when you let him
a bit scary though when he’s doing your makeup and giggling to himself
surprisingly good at it which confuses you because who was he practicing on hmm
( push up/take off your glasses )
when you first met sunoo you were wearing your contacts
so, when he saw you on a random day wearing glasses he became obsessed 
prefers at home dates since it usually means you wear your glasses instead of contacts
started a little thing were he’ll push your glasses up when its slides down
might slope down the little bit and now his finger is in your face
sometimes he’ll just completely take it off to mess with you
finds it hilarious when you try to read something far away and he snatches them off so you can’t see anymore
YANG JUNGWON
( watch you pick what to wear )
jungwon was shocked at the amount of clothes you had when you first started dating
which only got worse after you started stealing all his clothes
shocked gasps can be heard every time he hears you say you have nothing to wear
he finds the whole process of you picking out an outfit funny
loves when you try on multiple outfits because he knows you’ll probably end up with one of his hoodies and jeans
refuses to help you pick because you always ask only to do whatever you want 
loves when you make a pile of clothes you don’t want to wear on your bed because he can smell his and your perfume mixing from his hoodies
( poke/tickle you )
where sunghoon squeezes and bites, jungwon pokes and tickles
did it once to scare you but you didn’t react so now he’s made it his life goal to catch you off guard
convinced he can condition you into being ticklish if he tries hard enough like okay pavlov
will walk past you and jab his finger into your rib and get no reaction
where some people get bored and move on to someone who will react, yang jungwon only becomes more determined
has tried tickling you through the day to see if that changes anything. it doesn’t
lets just say a little argument ensued once when he decided to tickle you at 3am in your sleep
NISHIMURA RIKI

niki is someone who needs constant physical touch 
he’s so dramatic with it too oh my god he’ll start whining about if you don’t touch him now he’ll die in two seconds
began with him trying to hug you 24/7 even when the members would tease him he wouldn’t let go
that soon changed to intertwining pinkies because walking whilst hugging is not easy
if for some reason he can’t hug or hold you pinkie he’ll make do
sometimes he’ll link your arms or pinch your clothes
another weirdo who’ll hug your leg if he has to
( looking for you in the morning )
he’s become accustomed to waking up with you that if he doesn’t see you next to him he’ll get up to look for you
it’s cute to you when he comes into the living room or kitchen dishevelled and hugs you
but scares the fuck out of his members
they were convinced for the first month he was sleep walking
would see niki at ass o’clock going through each room calling out your name like a broken record
would take him a minute to process the fact that you’re not there
would get sent a new videos daily from one of the members of a groggy niki going through the rooms saying your name

However one placement cannot decide everything one needs to see an entire chart into consideration

When I have to notice such placements I tend to focus on 3 planets in particular MERCURY, VENUS & NEPTUNE. One rules communication the other artistic abilities and the last one mysticism. And that to me is a singer. Some even say Neptune is the higher octave of Venus which is even better.

it's a lot more raw, production wise. the vocals aren't super clean, but I actually really like it this way!!! it makes the song that much more precious, gentle, intimate
Bedouine's vocals NEVER DISAPPOINTS!! She always has a way of transporting you with her music- makes you feel like you're floating above water
I needed to sautee the yearning for this one, its so pretty but hits you right in the feels

that little instrumental interlude towards the bridge is so lovely and the entire song really! I think they did a good job of splitting the vibe 50/50 <- I say this because I listen to Bedouine a lot and the vibe of her songs is definitely here. it just really shows that they both wrote this together. its not a feature, its a collab

i've been seeing a lot of falsettos posts recently deconstructing the fandoms beliefs and firstly
holy fuck thank you, i try to steer clear of fandom (and fandom-izing thereof) drama but this is getting a lot more visible recently so here's some little tidbits for you
whizzer brown is not an unflawed character!
okay so i haven't seen enough dissecting this but!!! in the chess game!
the whole point of marvin using that game to determine the ending of their relationship is because he suspects whizzer is constantly deceiving him and wants to prove it.
whizzer LITERALLY proves him right!
he asks marvin to help him along (yes i know he says he doesn't want help, hear me out, it's a little more complex than that) and takes advantage of the fact that marvin is- like- infatuated with him.
he draws him into a sense of false security then starts throwing accusations at him ("since you need a man!" "what?" "who's 'brainy'," "or witty, move.") until hes able to win, which he does with ease because he's been using marvin having this idea that he isn't smart against him.
of course, marvin's side of this isn't the best either but honestly, for once the fandom should focus on a different character when they think 'insane asshole'. typically we should also probably change our perspectives a little to be more unbiased cuz fr guys, this is getting really.. annoying.
i understand he's the most visibly flawed but that doesn't excuse constantly picking the worst parts of this musical (without other context, btw) to use against him.
and this post certainly isn't here to excuse anyone either i've just got a lot of opinions that i wanted to share while falsettos is.. trending? right?
2. marvin's (headcanoned but still somewhat researched) autism
this one isn't brought up as much but when i do see it around, it's kind of a skewed viewpoint.
while rewatching bits of the proshot i realized a lot of different neurodivergent traits that he shows-
he's helpless during I Never Wanted to Love You and is childish and regressive when he's upset (not every autistic person is like this either, i know this is a bit of a touchy subject so i just wanted to add that).
usually when people depict it i see it either toned down or joked about which is fine when all in good fun, and when its done respectfully.
not here to attack anyone, just here to point it out and say that yes :) he most likely is neurodivergent, but despite that his actions aren't condoned. he's still kinda a dick who needs to get his shit together
3. ..the lesbians also have shit going on?
just putting this out there- I DON'T SEE ENOUGH FOR THE LESBIANS! OR TRINA!
the girls in this musical are like thoroughly neglected and i think that's kind of shitty just assuming the fact that william finn put them in to demonstrate how gender roles put people in degrading positions (and he even makes it more prevalent by showing marvin as something like a misogynistic character who forces whizzer into more feminine roles to show the audience what woman have to/had to go through in society).
anyways, the lesbians aren't just there guys. they have a plotline too. in Something Bad is Happening, you derive a lot from charlotte singing about the outbreak of HIV/AIDS and realize how she operates on a daily basis (she's passionate about her work and takes every bad day as a hit to her life and career, explaining in a way that as a black, jewish, lesbian, FEMALE doctor in this time, everything that goes wrong is immediately brought down on her so much more than it would as any straight white male pharmacist-).
cordelia on the other hand has to handle the fact that her girlfriend is so adamant about her work ethic that she can't actually be super present in their relationship at times like that.
but either way she still sticks by her and is constantly trying to be supportive and endearing despite feeling like she's not amounting to her gf who's basically a hero in her eyes.
i kinda just wanted to bring that up because they mean a lot to me and they don't get enough love from the fanbase, thank you for listening to my TED talk <3

"Shut Up, I'm Trying to Ask You Out."
Katsuki Bakugo wasn't sure exactly when it started, but he was pretty sure he hated your guts.
It started during the first few days of school. You turned towards him, desk only a foot away from his, and smiled so brightly that it made his chest hurt. He thought he was sick, and after a useless trip to the nurse's office, found himself at the peak of health. It happened again not too long after, when you laughed at Dunce Face's stupid joke. He had felt his chest again, as well as a rush of heat to his ears. And the symptoms continued for months, still persisting. There was only one explanation to these weird reactions.
Katsuki hated you so much that it made his body react, too.
He glowered at you from across the classroom, watching you toss your head back as laughter spilled from your lips. One of your hands was grasping onto Dumb Hair's arm, and the sharp-toothed red head didn't seem to be complaining about it one bit. "Tch." Katsuki clicked his tongue, feeling that familiar pang once more before turning his gaze towards the window.
"Getting jealous again, are we?" Raccoon Eyes nudged his arm, wiggling her eyes between him and you.
"Hell no. What would I be jealous about? Over some shitty nobody? Yeah, right." Despite having just averted his gaze, Katsuki's ruby eyes tracked you down once more. You had removed your hand - thank hell - but instead of seeing your turned away face, the hot-headed boy met your steady gaze. He held it for a moment, and you titled your head at him. Almost curiously. Then you smiled, and that awful thump happened again. He turned back to the window, grinding his teeth together.
Yup. There was no better explanation. He really, really didn't like you.
And with all of his great fuckin' luck, he just had to have been caught "staring" at you by his "friends."
"Oh, to be young and in love!" Dunce Face dramatically pressed his hand to his forehead, swaying from side to side before falling gracefully into Racoon Eyes' arms. "Kiss me, Bakugou!" He said in a false falsetto, followed by a series of kissing noises. The pair erupted into giggles and shrieks as Katsuki sent a warning glare in their direction.
"I'm not in love. I hate her, remember?"
Racoon Eyes shook her head, propping herself up from the ground. "That's what you think. Have you ever even thought about the possibility that you might... gasp... have a crush?"
Katsuki didn't respond, only grumbling incoherently as he stared down at the book in his hands. It was supposed to be a study session, with Katsuki on the couch and the two idiots sitting in front of him, their homework splayed out on the coffee table in a jumbled mess.
"C'mon, Mina. That would mean Bakugo has a hear- ow." Dunce Face rubbed the back of his head, still registering that he was just smacked with Katsuki's heavy book. "Hey, you'll regret that."
Katsuki grinned. "Yeah? I'd like to see you fuckin' try."
Dunce Face's attention flitted elsewhere, and that dumb grin spread across his face. He held up his hand. "Y/N! Just in time! Come join us!"
Katsuki froze, eyes narrowing. "Stop fucking with me, Sparky. We both know you-re just-"
He felt your hands on his shoulders first, then the smell of your perfume. It was fruity and sweet, like some kind of strawberry shortcake. "Hey! Are you guy's studying? I'd love to join, if that's okay!"
He couldn't do anything. His mouth had dried up, body frozen as it tried to catch up with his brain. His breath caught in his throat. When your hands lifted from his shoulders, he almost sighed out of disappointment. Him. Out of all people. And it hit him like a truck that maybe, just maybe, those two damn idiots might've been right. For the first and last time in their lives.
You didn't wait for a response, instead hopping over the couch cushions and sitting beside Katsuki. He couldn't even look at you straight, only sparing you a side-glance and offering a mumbled "what's up."
What's up? He doesn't ever say stuff like that, and his ears began to burn. His two so-called friends exchanged a look. You didn't seem to notice, instead leaning closer to Katsuki to get a better look at his book. "Hey! What are you studying? Literature? That's one of my favorite classes."
You tucked a strand of hair behind your ear, and his breath caught in his throat as he finally looked at your face as you stared down at the book in his hands.
You were beautiful. He always knew, deep down, you were pretty. But it hit him so much harder when you were right beside him, eyes glittering as they studied something, pink lips curling into a soft and natural smile. You were so different compared to him; soft, polite, understanding. He was an ass.
Your eyes moved upwards, and he quickly averted his gaze, hoping you didn't catch him staring. Racoon Eyes cleared her throat. "You know, I think I forgot that book in my room. Right, Kaminari? Didn't you forget yours, too?"
"Huh? No, I have it right-"
"KAMINARI. Didn't. You. Forget. It?"
Those two brain cells of his finally rubbed together. "Oh! Oh yes, I did. Darn! Let's go together to grab our books, Mina! We'll be right back!" Dunce Face was robotic, standing up and marching out of the living room towards the dorms. Racoon Eyes was right on his heels, sparing a thumbs-up at Katsuki before disappearing behind the doorframe.
"Damn idiots."
"Yeah, sometimes. But that's what makes them fun, right?"
Katsuki snapped his head to you, eyes wide. That may have been the meanest thing he had ever heard you say, and that was saying a lot. "Uh... Yeah, I guess. Sometimes."
"So, while we're waiting for them, what do you want to talk about?"
You had the ball in his court, and Katsuki wasn't sure how to play. He felt clammy and weird, his chest doing that weird thing again. Except this time, it was worse. "Oh, maybe that wasn't the best way to start. Sorry, I'm just nervous." You smiled sheepishly, scratching at your cheek and moving your eyes elsewhere.
"Nervous? Why?"
"Well... We don't really talk too much with one another, right? I was just trying to learn more about you, I guess."
You wanted to know more. About him.
"I like spicy food." Katsuki blurted out. He didn't really think about the words, just letting them escape mindlessly. "I like food so spicy that it hurts. I used to make this hot curry for my mom and dad, and one time my dad couldn't get past the first bite because he complained it was going to burn off his taste buds. But I called bullshit."
The silence only stretched for a few seconds, but to Katsuki, it felt like an eon. Then, you laughed. It was the first time you had ever laughed at something he said. Not Dunce Face, not Hair-For-Brains. Him. Katsuki Bakugo. It was like bells, light and airy. Soon, he was chuckling beside you. Your laugh was contagious.
"I also like spicy food, but maybe not that spicy. I also really like sweet stuff."
"Like strawberries?"
You tilted your head at him. That curious tilt. "Yeah! How did you know? That's my favorite."
"You smell like strawberries."
Oh shit. Oh, fuck. That sounded so weird, and by the time the words registered in Katsuki's brain, they had already left his lips. And now you heard them too, and you also probably thought he was weird, and shit fuck god damnit-
"Oh! You have a really great sense of smell! It's a new shampoo. I think you're the first to point it out!"
"Yeah, it's pretty fucking strong. It smells good, though! I wasn't saying you smelt bad or anything like that, just that it was the first thing I noticed when you came up. Shit, not that I'm saying I sniff you or something fucking weird like that, just-" Katsuki was stuck rambling, and he wished for lightning to strike him down.
You placed a hand on his arm, and Katsuki zipped right up. "Hey, that's amazing that you noticed that! Honestly, you have a scent too. But yours isn't strawberries. Sorry to burst your bubble." Now you were joking with him. You started giggling at your own joke, and Katsuki wanted to bury his face in his hands to hide the redness spreading across his cheeks. How were you so goddamn cute?
"Damn. Don't know how I'll survive." He sounded too dry, but you didn't seem to mind as you graced him with your laughter. And then, something popped up in his brain. If he did have a "crush", then maybe he should just...
"Hey, have you heard of that new cafe that just opened last week? It's supposed to have a whole strawberry menu. Or some shit like that. Seasonal thing or whatever."
You perked up, eyes having that familiar sparkle. "Really? That sounds amazing! Maybe I can ask Mina and Jiro to come with me, or even Uraraka. She'd probably love it, too!"
Katsuki deflated, but only a bit. "Yeah, those are good ideas. But I bet someone else might wanna go with you."
"Oh, yeah? I guess it wouldn't be nice to leave Kirishima out, since he likes strawberries, too. Or maybe you mean Sero? He always talks about trying new foods. Oh! How about..." You were rambling now, listing off classmates to join you. But the only one you never mentioned was Katsuki. And it was starting to frustrate him. He kept his cool, up until you just had to mention-
"Midoriya could come, too! He's always so-"
"Hell, will you please shut up? I was trying to ask you out on a date!"
It was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. Your eyes widened, mouth dropping open in shock as you just... stared at him. And Katsuki Bakugo quickly realized he fucked up. "God damnit, I didn't mean to yell at you. Fuck, I was just trying to-"
"Yes. Yes, I'll go with you."
He snapped his neck so quickly towards you, he was surprised it didn't break. "What? Really?"
"Katsuki. Of course, I'll go with you. I think it would be really fun. And I was being honest when I said I wanted to get to know you better."
"Oh... Okay. Great. That's great."
You glanced around the room. "How about now?"
"Now? Hell yeah. Let's go. Fuck the study group."
Katsuki bolted out of his seat a bit too excitedly, and you stifled back a grin. No need in embarrassing him. You pushed yourself up, grabbing his arm once more. "C'mon. Dessert's on me today. But I'll expect you to pay for both of us next time."
Next time. You were already planning for a next time before the "this time" had begun. Katsuki couldn't stop his grin, standing up a bit straighter. "I think I can deal with that. Let's go. We don't have all day."
It wasn't until weeks later that Katsuki actually asked you out. Officially. But it only took him a day to find out that Kaminari and Mina had made a bet about the first date, with Mina declared the winner. Let's just say her winnings benefitted Katsuki more than her.
Especially since he ended up taking the cash for himself and your guy's second date. Thanks, Mina.

It had been two months.
Or exactly 1460 hours since whizzer had left permanently. 840 hours since he saw his lover lowered into the ground, buried underneath hot soil. It was sunny that day, the sun beamed down on the back of his neck causing sweat to form and trickle onto the inside part of the collar of the white button up.
Marvin hated the Sun, he always preferred the rain. Cold wet rain made him feel less alone, the pitter patter as the rain hit the ground or the window brung him comfort. The sun didn’t. But whizzer liked the sun; he liked both actually, but above all weather conditions he loved the sun. He remembered asking him about it once, said something about how the heat from it gave him a dopamine rush. He remembered whizzer sounding-
His thought ended there. He searched for words to describe how he sounded on that day, but he could barely do it. The sound of his voice was faint like a memory from when your three. Marvin stood still. Completely frozen as he tried desperately to remember.
“C’mon…c’mon…”
Whizzer, whizzer, whizzer, whizzer.
He searched his mind desperately for every memory he and whizzer had to remember what he sounded like. It hadn’t been that long had it? No no, whizzer wasn’t gone. Whizzer was still here in memory, he had to remember or else whizzer would be gone. He would’ve lost whizzer forever. There would be no salvation for it.
Marvin’s body started to attempt to move, but he couldn’t. In fact, when he tried to, he immediately lost his balance and almost fell if it wasn’t for the wall. He’d been like this for a while, he’d been used to the muscle atrophy at this point. It had been happening even before whizzer got hospitalized. He did what he normally did, dragged his foot, forced himself to move desperately the tingling sensation and numbness.
He slumped to the ground as soon as he reached the small wooden table that his phone sat. He reached up, his hand searching for the familiar shape and started to push it off. He caught it as it feel and he quickly dialed.

He held the receiver up to his ear. His breath heavy with anticipation as it rang. It was only maybe 15 seconds but it felt like 15 years of waiting. 15 years of waiting for whizzer to answer, for him to ask Marvin howworks going, marvin would answer that he’s working late, that he’d be home soon. Marvin would be nice, say that he’d bring takeout on his way home. Whizzer would say okay. He’d come home to see whizzer. Everything would be alright that way.
Finally the ringing ended and Marvin gripped the reciver like a frightened hold with a knife.
“Hello this is whizzer brown, I’m out right now. Call back later, unless I’m ignoring you. In that case fuck off.”
The line went dead and Marvin called back again.
“Hello this is whizzer brown, I’m out right now. Call back later, unless I’m ignoring you. In that case fuck off.”
And again, and again, and again. He started laughing. It was kinda like whizzer was ignoring him huh? Like he was two years back when they’d first broken up. Marvin remember a couple days after the incident he had called whizzer seven times, one time sober where he left him harsh words. Called him a money hungry slut that couldn’t keep his legs shut that just leeched off of rich men. The other times he was drunk, completely hammered. Begging, apologizing like a pathetic loser. Whizzer only answered once. With the help of the voicemail he remembered the exact tone and cadence of his voice.
“Marvin.”
He paused and Marvin began his drunken apologies, whizzer cut him off after a sentence though.
“Marvin, lose my number. Never call me again or else I’m changing it.”
He sounded tired, angry, a little bit pained too. The line went dead after that and as much as Marvin was pissed that day that whizzer dared had the nerve to ignore, he ultimately obliged. He didn’t call him or see him until two years later.
Marvin laughed at the memory. Not that it was funny in any capacity, but the idea whizzer was just ignoring him again. That if he keeps pestering whizzers line he’d answer, cuss him out, yell obscenities at him. He wanted nothing more than for him to do that actually. He wanted to hear whizzer again, he wanted to touch and feel his hair, his skin. He wanted to talk to him. This was the closest he could get. So he dialed again, and again, and again.
For the first time in months he felt happy it was Like whizzer was still here, like whizzer was going to walk though their apartment door and kiss him. Everything of whizzer’s was still here after all. His cameras, his clothes, his shoes, his film, his baseball bat, his mitt, his racket. all of it. Whizzers stuff was in their room waiting for him. Whizzers line was still active, so eventually he’d answer and complain about Marvin blowing up his phone, he’d come home and tear Marvin a new one about not taking care of himself and his disgusting choice of clothes. Whizzers still here.
He dialed his number again. The numbers on it started to become more faded than the rest, Marvin didn’t know how long he’d been at this. Marvin had began to loose the concept of time outside of his work hours entirely actually. He held the receiver up to his ear again, waiting for the next hit of relief at whizzers voice as if it was a drug. But was instead swindled and scammed, being met with the robotic tone of a woman.
“Sorry you have reached a number that is disconnected or is no longer in service.”
He threw the reciver down to the floor, the line making the rest of the phone follow. It was most likely broken but Marvin didn’t care.
Whizzer was gone. Marvin couldn’t hear whizzers voice anymore. Marvin wouldn’t ever see whizzer again, Marvin wouldn’t see his lover come home, his lover wouldn’t take photos of him without him looking, he wouldn’t tear into him anymore for his poor choice of clothing and style, they wouldn’t play raquetball anymore, whizzers camera would collect dust, so would his film, whizzer wouldn’t play and loose against Jason, whizzer wouldn’t help Jason practice for baseball.
Whizzer brown was gone, he wasn’t coming back.
Marvin laughed and laughed and laughed. He writhed and clutched his stomach tightly as he curled into a ball. Laughs eventually turned into choked up sobs.
Whizzer brown was officially gone, there was no salvation or saving grace. Marvin had gotten one of his worse fears to come to fruition. At least Marvin would reunite with him soon enough, apologize for everything. He was bound to see his lover once more, kiss him, hold him, talk with him. eat with him, swallow him whole. Weather it be illness or the ocean, he’ll see whizzer once more.

rahhhh random rant because i’m angry hater mood i HATE HATE HATE people who think miss goldberg did anything to marvin. saw someone go “set those sails is a villain song and people need to accept miss goldberg is a bad person” i’m screaming and crying and clawing at the walls you don’t fucking understand it you don’t understand the goddamn musical.
in trousers is at its core about misogyny, that is its core theme, which is shown by how marvin hurts the women in his life, specifically his wife, his sweetheart, and miss goldberg. it would conflict the themes and narrative if miss goldberg hurt marvin, as this would diminish what marvin does to the other women. marvin does come up with excuses for his actions/ tries to garner sympathy in the musical (im talking 1979 vers here, i’m not as well versed on the 1985) he is immediately hit with trina shutting him down with her telling us how his actions have hurt her more than they’ve hurt him.
another thing is that the women are mostly not themselves, but rather versions of themselves that exist in marvin’s head. this doesn’t apply to trina, as she is the only woman in the musical who tells her own story. for example, your lips and me and its reprise tell us very specifically events that are happening in her life and how she’s feeling, she also tells her about her past. she also addresses marvin directly in breakfast over sugar.
whereas his sweetheart and miss goldberg do not have songs like this. “my highschool sweetheart” doesn’t tell us anything about his sweetheart other than that she’s his sweetheart, she’s a person, and that she wants marvin to pay attention to her more. but there honestly isn’t much in the musical to confirm that she actually is a person at all, she insists her own existence but marvin never pays attention to her or even addresses her existence, in childhood or adulthood.
miss goldberg is interesting. she doesn’t play into marvin’s fantasy and feels like more of a real person than his sweetheart, having her own personality and opinions. she also sings i am wearing a hat where she seems to tell part of a story that could be her own, though it doesn’t really get more specific than “i’m wearing a hat, i am unloved”. she never quite seems to behave like a schoolteacher either, within the story she seems to be more of a narrator, likely due to her importance in marvin’s story. she is the biggest case of marvin insisting his heterosexually, while also forcing him to realise he is gay. she is not actually herself within the musical, the real miss goldberg is probably nothing like her. this is an internalised version of her than marvin came up with, though it’s more authentic feeling than his sweetheart since her role is to pull marvin out of his fantasies, since she’s probably the only way marvin can actually be honest with himself and recognise his actions.
many people bring up the lines “you might tell me you’re a victim, you might get what you deserve, but i won’t excuse, boy i cant excuse, a boy who’s lost his nerve” which i will admit. do not sound great, incredibly suspicious even. but taken in the context that miss goldberg is not actually saying this to marvin, and actually it’s a version of miss goldberg that marvin has made up to make himself “behave properly” it starts to make sense.
marvin victimises himself a LOT. he’s self aware enough to recognise when he does wrong but tends to refuse to believe that it’s truly his fault, and that he’s the victim somehow. this is pretty obvious in falsettos but it’s also true in in trousers. he sings a lot of songs trying to portray himself as the victim, facing a lot of opposition from the women. this is shown in How Marvin Eats His Breakfast where he is sure that he’s in the right and is the victim because he’s not getting what he wants, and the women in the song directly oppose him by describing all the insane things he’s doing and even insulting him. it’s also shown in The Nausea Before the Game, where he’s lamenting about how his life is so hard, and how trying to live up to societies expectations is nauseating (this is a very simplified analysis of the song, i do actually thing marvin’s feelings in this song are valid but that’s an entirely different conversation). the song transitions into his wife singing about how she met him, how he ghosted her for weeks but then came back. that part of the song is much more tragic than marvin’s, essentially telling the listener that while his feelings are valid, he also seriously hurt and damaged this woman, and that that cannot be forgotten. the musical never ever lets us believe that marvin is the victim, despite his insistence.
and then every pony, is what i think the first line of that quote is referring to. how marvin is convinced that he is the victim, he is telling *himself* that. and the part of himself who knows that isn’t true manifests as miss goldberg to tell him that no, no you aren’t. no matter what marvin says, he will never be the victim, he is the one hurting others.
“you might get what you deserve” is slightly more difficult. i can’t really tell if it’s positive or negative. it could either refer to how he got what he deserved by being in a loveless marriage, or how he got what he deserved by leaving his wife and kids (and bird) to leave with whizzer. personally i think it’s the second, going with how marvin is convinced that he’s the victim, he’s convinced him leaving his wife for whizzer is what he deserves after going through so much. he thinks he deserves something good for once. and like yay bro for breaking out of your forced heterosexuality but did you have to destroy your wife’s entire life in the process? when i say marvin isn’t a victim i do mean in the context of the musical, marvin is very much a victim of society and heteronormativity, but he is NOT a victim of any of the women in the musical, which he likes to pretend he is. it’s easier to blame them than himself.
“but i won’t excuse, boy i can’t excuse, a boy who’s lost his nerve.” much simpler to understand, the miss goldberg inside marvin’s head is very much the voice of outside influence, aka wider society, the one that expects him to conform. she can’t excuse him “loosing his nerve” by deciding to cheat on his wife with a man and run away with said nerve.
anyway i hope this yap session help y’all understand that marvin was never harmed by miss goldberg (nor do i think he did anything to her, other than probably be off putting and creepy like an average 14 year old is) i doubt anyone will see this but i loooooove talking about this stupid musical so ask questions please please please or else i’ll post 5 MILLION of these because i can’t stop thinking about this musical

Thinking about how everyone in falsettos got to grieve properly for Whizzer except Whizzer.
It's a very unique sort of grief, to have to grieve for one's self. Whizzer had to face the ever present threat of his own death and deal with the knowledge that the lovely life he and Marvin might have had would never be, nor would he ever get to move on or try again.
Up until What Would I Do, at which point he's already gone and barely more than an apparition, Whizzer never properly expressed the pain and grief and heartache of dying - at least, not to anybody else.
He's silent through Days Like This, allowing those around him to say their piece and convince themselves everything was going to be okay. He smiles at them and attempts to play chess with Jason. It's obvious that he wants to make things nice for them even though he knows what's coming.
He spends most of unlikely lovers trying to soothe Marvin, trying to convince him to go home and that he would be fine. He seems considerably more interested in taking care of Marvin than allowing Marvin to take care of him. During this song, there are a few moments where Marvin seems to begin to break down, and it's Whizzer who holds him and tries to stay put together.
The line "let's pretend nothing is awful" gets repeated a lot. On one level, maybe it's sweet. Maybe they all just want to feel normal and okay and it's the best they can do. On another, though, it's a sort of insistence that Whizzer keep pretending he's going to be okay when he knows he isn't. It doesn't give him the space to deal with all the horrible emotions that come from facing his own death because the people around him are hurting too. It keeps him smiling and trying to act somewhat put together in front of his loved ones instead of expressing what he's really feeling.
We get his full breakdown in You Gotta Die Sometime, which, of course, he's alone for. That's when we get to see that he really is terrified to die, that he wants more time no matter how hard he tries to keep his composure and act like it's not affecting him. He explicitly says that he doesn't want to play dumb anymore. He wants to acknowledge what's coming and live as much as he can before he goes.
Then everyone comes in for the bar mitzvah, and suddenly Whizzer is pulling smiles again and toasting Jason and trying to hold himself together for everyone else up until the very end when he just can't anymore.
The next time we see him, he's already gone. Just an image in Marvin's mind's eye.
He never got a chance to process or cope with his own death up until the very end. Throughout his entire decline, he keeps any amount of pain to himself, instead tending to the needs of others or just acting like he's considerably more okay than he was.
Whizzer's death broke the family. Each and every one of them hurt like hell after his passing. Even so, despite how much pain they were experiencing, they all came together to mourn him and lean on each other in the end. They got to grieve. They got to continue the final act of loving him, and in turn loving each other.
What did Whizzer get?

thought to myself u know what. i havent watched falsettos enough. so here's a couple things i noticed in my latest impromptu rewatch (rewatch number 52th probably?? 67th?) + just some nice bits n parallel that are always Good (tm):
"he loves another" "i agree" with ("-man") going unsaid
the chess games following trina's song about stupid men and their little games
"that's the king. please protect him" That's marvin saying "please protect me. don't hurt me"
whizzer moves the pieces randomly in the revival but i like to imagine he's actually beating marvin at the game in the end... and the whole thing was him pretending to not know how to play, and that hurt marvin's ego more than anything
"now marvin, bend" as a sexy moment but later gets re-framed as a "unwillingness to change perspective" moment
"nothing is everything to me / except sex / and money" in that money whizzer is playing to marvin's insecurity that he's only sticking with marvin for his money- is so needlessly cruel (and thus such... delicious character writing lol)
"and he loves me so" that "so" at the end is sort of a "loves me so much" but also a dare. he loves me, so what can you even do about that?"
"ask me if i love him, it depends on the day"// "do i love him?… no"
"son with a brain, and nice bright mother" showing mendel is like marvin (+ many, many men) and wants a wife half just to do domestic labor for him (goes well with the "washing your laundry, washing your socks!" line)
"he loves his father" // "i love things i never had"
"im everything he wanted" here trina finally realizes how she was such a insecure woman for such a long time and why she could put up with so much / settle for so little ("love me for what i am, not what i try to be" etc)
i love that "what ive done to you is rotten" is the slap to trina, is not taking to jason about his sexuality, and is Also telling trina and jason he "never ever, wanted to love" them. triple treat of bad parenting lol (but our man gets there in the end #bless him)
"a man kid, you'll be kid, whatever your song" the kind of reversed coming out metaphor of it all. ugh. so good!! (also i always cry at this bit bc... i will never have this with my parents :) rip haha whoops)
"pretty boys are in demand" just a good line for the whole gay men dying everywhere + the 'dating frenzy' energy of the era
"im not a giant man" /"good" // "one day i hope to be / as mature as my son who is 12 and a half / and this tall… that's all i want to be, that's all"
"we'll spent BILLIONS of dollars" and then the actual thing plays the way it does
"making the most pathetical errors" as a metaphor for marvin's arc…. making constant errors in love but making a homerun at the end
"should i take this new promotion OR should i take this IBM job?" is an amazing, anti-corporate lyric that fits greatly w/ the most explicitly political (likely authorial) song in the musical that, imho, shouldn't have been cut in the revival. in hindsight tho i imagine the revival people felt very proud and """progressive""" when they made that cut lol is very much a typical liberal move: "cant have true emancipation or revolutions but u cant have some \~upward mobility in the job market xoxo". also on the same vein, cutting the line "i'll change my life, and hire a maid" from the og "and fire the maid" like it's this huge feminist moment lol ughhhh hh
(other line-cuts that frustrate me… "it's queer, mr. marvin", "i could use a little drink" and "i just bought a family" . i feel w/ all of these they tooks some "edge" of the OG characters and kind of attempted to make them "nicer". but it really just makes them a little flatter, a little less real) ( and also some scenes just plain make less sense (marvin's drink line leading to his outburst)
(but bc it's not All Bad sdklfj in fairness, i belie the whole "why don't we tell him, that we don't have the awnsers? (…) this is the start to his becoming a man" bit - is SUCH a great part for mendel, it goes so hard and from what i remember is not in the original falsettos? correct me if im wrong but if it was a new addition in the revival, imo it's a huge improvement to the scene flow… and dare i say, brings the whole climax together, and spells out The Aesop for people who hadn't gotten it by the end of Act 2) -"let me go, im not ashamed to have loved you" // "what's the matter trina, darling, why cant you let go?" -"feel all right for the rest of your life" The Message of the play implicit in it.. "even if it's cut short"
"you save lives, and i serve chicken fat / i can't fucking deal wit hthat" / "maybe is not dumb the way this whole thing ends / the food tastes really yummy!"
"it's about growing up, getting older, living on a lover's shoulder" /"but i confess, you grow up, you get old, you hate less"
"the ground shifting, the rules keeps changing" and it's when the set changes for the first time!!! (/eats all my walls)
"isn't it enough i love you every night?" "who?" // "we had trouble parking, just like on our second date" "i hyperventilate"
"good men never fail" // "but i can't help but feeling i've failed " proving once again those machista lessons marvin learned when young were wrong.... it's clear that him showing weakness at that moment to whizzer was The Right Thing To Do. and what the moment called for.

This world truly is weird~. Society should acknowledge “hashimaki” so much more.
It’s a flour-based food and it’s super easy to eat. You can even choose its flavour.

Since they’re not for me to eat and are instead a gift for the Young Master, I’d like to get them for takeout if possible.

Truthfully, this kind of food is usually eaten on the spot or while walking, so I’m not sure if they’d be alright to take home.

And one of the reasons I think some people think Will Roland is "a worse singer" is because, sometimes, stylistically, Will Roland will use a sort of falsetto/head voice (which I LOVE BTW AND IM SICK OF PEOPLE CALLING OTHER PEOPLE BAD SINGERS BECAUSE THEY USE HEAD VOICE- IT'S BEAUTIFUL, IMPRESSIVE, AND REQUIRES GOOD BREATH CONTROL TO MAKE IT NOT SOUND CRAPPY AND WILL ROLAND DOES IT AMAZINGLY) like when he says "hero" and "Rob Dinero" (idk if that's how you spell it 😭) in More Than Survive.
It's not that he's a bad singer, he is taking the brunt of his voice during those parts and also, given that it's this little solo/soliloquy moment for Jeremy, I think that Will Roland's choice to use a light head voice there is perfectly well-placed. It feels kinda personal, I guess. And I love it <3
Not to say that Will Connolly's way of singing it isn't also great. It's awesome! But like, guys, we can't keep getting pissed when a new actor in a show doesn't have the exact same singing voice as the original 😭 That's just silly, guys. 😭

Anywaysss- back to Will Roland's voice- he is very much capable of hitting the notes that Will Conolly hits- if not higher (IT'S NOT A COMPETION THO, GUYS- PLS DONT COME FOR ME). For example, the acoustic version of Loser, Geek, Whatever on Spotify which, I believe, is a key higher than usual!! This man can belt some high notes when the situation calls for it! And also, (these are not really bmc related but whatever) during the harmony or whatever at the end of "Sincerely, Me", that is none other than WiLL RoLaND (!!!) hitting that high E (I'm pretty sure it's an E. I hope it's an E. But regardless, it's still a SUPER HIGH NOTE) at the end! And in "Amphibian" on Joe Iconis' album titled, well, "Album", Will Roland hits some insanely high notes!!! ( EVEN IF THEY ARE HEAD VOICE. I REPEAT, HEAD VOICE DOES NOT MEAN BAD SINGER!!)
Also, as a little additional statement to my "Jeremy is autistic/ autistic-coded so Will Roland played him as autistic"; this is not to say that Will Conolly didn't add some "autistic flare", if you will, to Jeremy. I mean, just yesterday I was freaking out with my friend about a gif of Will Conolly's Jeremy doing the autistic flappy hands :))). And I think that he was a good baseline for other Jeremy's to build off of!
Also, I feel like the people that are saying that Will Roland's portrayal of autism/neurodiversity is "ableist" or "incorrect" or "too dramatic" are sorta failing to understand/acknowledge that autism/neurodiversity is a spectrum. Not every person with autism or another kind of Neurodiversity is gonna act the same. And I think that's something really beautiful that we should all cherish. It is GREAT that we are all different but also, in many ways, the same!
And to see myself and my uncontrolled speaking voice and weird noises and such represented by Will Roland on stage is such a beautiful thing that I think 'ought to be cherished.
