She loves partying w/ you and taking you places

She doesn't want you to meet her sisters, in fear of you comparing them to each other

She wants to be herself with you

She's ecstatic and always energized

She always defends you when someone tries to make you look dumb

Unlike Mai, she would trade the other nations if they kidnapped you, because she loves you more than anything else in the world

Though, she is like Mai in the sense she'll betray Azula, because she loves you more than she fears her

Azula, Mai, Ty Lee, and Zuko

You were at first with Ty Lee

Though, you two were never official

You two just bonded better than the rest of them

Zuko and Mai became protective over you, seeing you repeatedly get hurt

Azula just saw you as stupid and she liked humiliating you

^Mai was jealous at first, but soon realized you weren't enemies, but friends. You deserved to be protected from the monster that is Azula

Mai and Zuko see themselves as your protector, especially against Azula. They kind of act like your parents, but they're both distant emotionally, but you definitely open them up

Katara was the first to fall for you, but not the first to tell you her feelings

It's probably Sokka who tells you

But you don't take it seriously, because he's a flirter

Toph is mean to you and is kind of like a big bully

Aang is nice and treats you like he's known you forever

You both just click so well

When Toph and Katara fight, you are brought into their fights, because they want you to be on their side

Just for fun, here are my rapid fire rambling thoughts on the ATLA ships and platonic dynamics hehe (please don’t go full ship wars tho - these are just my opinions as a chill multishipper!)

My Favorite Ships:

• Zukka - My current brainrot and main ship!! I know they aren’t canon but I really love them and their potential okay😭I just feel like their personalities would work so well! Sokka would call Zuko on his shit and Zuko would be good at grounding Sokka when he needs it. Plus I have seen some absolutely breathtaking AUs with this ship! And fire-and-ice vibes except gay! Them <3

• Kataang - Cutiessss!! I love them! They may not be the ship I think about most often, but when I do think about them, they’re adorable! Aang is such a “my wife” guy and Katara absolutely adores him back! Also the last airbender x last southern waterbender dynamic goes HARD! I like that these two are canon!

• Yuetara - Listen I know they barely interacted but THEY’VE ACTUALLY GROWN ON ME SO MUCH LATELY AND I VERY HIGH KEY SHIP THEM! Something about like, Katara thinking about Yue when she bends is so😭Their story would be heartbreaking in the best way!! Sapphic noncanon blorbos <3

• Mailee - These two are SO cute and have so much potential rahhh!! Again, love some noncanon sapphics <3

• Batkoda - Super SUPER cute and silly and fun! The dads fr <3 Bato is either Katara and Sokka’s adopted uncle or their stepdad and I love it for them hehe! This usually pairs well with a “Hakoda adopts Zuko” AU lmao!

Other Canon/Relatively Popular Ships:

• Zutara - A good ship! I see the potential and tbh it’s very very fun to think about sometimes!!! However, some of y’all toxic Zutara stans need to leave my boy Aang alone lmao. Those who are chill tho, I rock with y’all!! Overall, I’m not opposed if it’s done well and I do sometimes seek out Zutara content! I personally do prefer writing them as found siblings tho, especially with the Azula and Katara parallels!!

• Sukka - Canon cuties!! I really like them! Suki my BELOVED <3 She’s so underrated!

• Yukka - Also canon cuties! They make me sad tho ahhhhh😭😭😭

• Maiko - Also ALSO canon cuties!! They have an interesting dynamic that I can really appreciate! And gotta love Mai <3

• Jinko - Jin my beloved! These two had a super cute dynamic during the one episode they had together lmaoooo, tho I don’t think about this ship too too often.

• Tokka - I don’t mind it if it’s them getting together as adults! But tbh I personally don’t prefer shipping them as teens and I think Toph’s crush was just a typical young girl crush on someone slightly older lol. Definitely not horrible and most Tokka shippers are relatively chill! I like to think Sokka sees Toph as a little sister tho.

Now For Some Of The Crackship-y/Less Popular Ships (based on ships I’ve actually seen):

• Zukki (Zuko/Sokka/Suki) - Power throuple fr and I love some polyamory!! While I mostly lean plain Zukka, this is extremely fun to think about and would be a great dynamic!

• Mai/Ty Lee/Suki - Saw this in a Zukka fic once and it was adorableeeeee! I may not have plans to actively write this or anything, but it’s cute! Another power throuple!

• Jetko - I don’t think they would be compatible long term, but by god they are very very fun to think about in a “Jet flirts with Zuko and Zuko is completely oblivious and they share one kiss before everything goes to shit” way lmao!

• Taang - I can respect it!! I will always love them as chaos siblings personally, but it’s a totally valid and chill ship!

• Katoph - Not a bad ship at all! I’ve only come across like one post tho lmao. Also I do think I heavily prefer them as found sisters, but that’s just me personally! Again, totally a valid and chill ship!

• Azutara - I’m very neutral on this lmao. I don’t despise it at all and it could be pretty interesting?? But tbh really not something I plan to seek out.

• Azulaang - I mean?? I’m also pretty neutral on this one. Aang would be kind to her if she was trying to get help but…idk lmao.

• Tyzula - I see the potential, but I personally think Mai and Ty Lee had a healthier and more interesting and more realistic dynamic. Just my preference tho!

(I think I just want Azula to be in therapy before I reallyyyyy ship her lmao, but NOT THE KIND OF “THERAPY” SHE WAS GIVEN IN THE COMICS)

• Zukaang - I don’t love this as a ship honestly. The canon age gap as teens is sketchy for my personal taste, tho I’ve seen people ship them in “Aang was 16 when he got frozen” AUs and that’s…better and I can get behind it a little! It would be interesting! But I think Roku being Zuko’s great-grandpa just still throws me off of this ship. I don’t have any beef with the shippers tho! I’m very “live and let live” and I have seen so much worse lol.

Can’t Forget My Fav Platonic Dynamics!

• Sokka and Aang - Two found brothers who share one idiot braincell when they interact LMAO! Love them always <3

• Sokka and Katara - The siblings ever!!

• Zuko and Aang - Enemies to found brothers!! Canon besties! I love their friendship and their parallels SO MUCH!!

• Toph and Katara - Absolutely ADORABLE as found sisters!!!! Love them!

• Zuko and Katara - I really like their development in a platonic sense and I think they’re very very fun and lovely found siblings by the end!!!! Zuko is 100% the brother that just “yeah my sister can and will whoop your ass” LMAO!

• Zuko and Toph - Also very found siblings in my head!! Only have a handful of solo interactions in canon but I DON’T CARE! I WILL FOUND FAMILY THEM ANYWAY! I’m a “Toph seeks out Zuko for sibling hugs/cuddles when she’s cold because he’s basically a space heater” truther.

• Uncle Iroh and the Gaang - Zuko needs to learn to share because that is ALL OF THEIR Uncle!!!

- extremely hard workers who trained for years to get to where they are now

- i know absolutely NOTHING about ateez aside from a couple of their title tracks but this man looks so much like siyeon i couldn’t resist

- idk i just feel like they’d be good at being the fire disaster siblings

- he also looks like he’d eat up the “the scar is not on the wrong side” line for some reason???

- was probably an angsty teenager at some point

- i am fully aware that bibi isn’t an idol but i couldn’t resist

- she just gives the mai vibes honestly. you know that trope where the guard asks the character to hand over all of their weapons and just stands there and stares as said character pulls out knives from everywhere? that is both bibi and mai

- bibi is also the queen of every concept so i fully believe she could probably play the entire cast of atla in a chaotic one-woman show

Songs I would give each ATLA character!

Aang: Me gustas Tu (by Manu Chao). Got both the good vibes and love for everything, but also sort of melancholy and unresolved.

Katara: My Sister's Crown (by Vesna). I love Eurovision and do know the meaning behind this song, but it also bangs so hard as a female empowerment ballad. Can imagine Katara rocking someone's shit while this plays in the background.

Suki: W.I.T.C.H (by Devon Cole). Same as Katara's in that I can imagine her absolutely kicking some guy's ass while this plays in the background, plus Sokka at the start- 'Why you scared of a woman in charge?'

Sokka: Puppy Princess (by The Hot Freaks). C'mon, 'you know me as your boyfriend's goofy friend, I seem to have this effect on women'? This is my man.

Toph: Wrecking ball (by Mother Mother). I think the name is pretty self explanatory- she IS a rock on top of the sand in s2X9 :)

Zuko: Ain't no crying (by Derivakat). There is no other song I could possibly have put for Zuko. Every. Single. Lyric. Is perfect for him. I can't even cite just one here because I'd end up putting the whole song.

Iroh: Just A Man (by Jorge Rivera-Herrans). Perfect mix of sad and powerful, with just the right amount of love for the boy who's 'as old as [his son] was when he left for war.'

Ursa: Labour (by Paris Paloma). All of the second verse is brilliant for this, and the whole mood of the song encapsulates that stuck feeling that's crucial to Ursa's character.

Ozai: Digital Silence (by Peter mcPoland). Okay, this one was really different because Ozai can't just have a good song, he doesn't deserve to take one of those! But in the end I did choose this song- which i love- because of its sinister vibes and anti-progressive lyrics.

Azula: Crazy Girls (by TOOPOOR). Personally I listen to it sped up a la tiktok edits, but it's the lyricism that sells this one. Like most of the other songs, it's the second verse that sells it, but the pre-chorus fits her so well too. And, after all, she is a 'crazy' girl at the end.

Jet: Preacher (by Roe Kapara). He's a bit of a random one, but the essence of Jet's character lives in this song I think. The second verse (who'd've guessed) feels like his life and death in Ba Sing Se, and even reaches being slightly meta: 'They'll sell you your forgiveness if you pay them with your life'.

I can't think of many other characters that need songs, but lmk your ideas!

katara: she's a reputation girl no doubt about it, "don't blame me" is literally her song, she owns it thank you very much, and she and zuko are reputation besties who have all the merch and they scream all the lyrics and wholeheartedly believe that rep tour is the best tour of all time HOWEVER she loves loves loves "marjorie", "don't you ever grow up" (balls her eyes out at the pair of them, but when she first heard dyegu she was sobbing -) and while they're not her fav albums, she loves singing fearless and lover with aang

sokka: ok, sokka is one of those fans who you don't realise are that intense until they are screaming themselves hoarse at folklore, mkay? I'm talking, it's not just hakoda and bato giving him the worried side-eye, it's everyone AND their mother (well, not everyone's mother but ya know) cause like, sokka was DEF involved in this major college cheating scandal and got his heart uber uber broken and had no support system because he just... didn't tell anyone because he didn't want people to worry and so screaming folklore is his therapy session. oh, and when he was dating yue their album was speak now, they literally did their homecoming king and queen dance to "enchanted" they were that couple, and he still loves the album so much but he just... can't speak for hours after a folklore song pops up, and couldn't speak for a week after the eras tour (in a similar vein, he's a big "the archer" fan, he and toph vibe with it so hard)

toph: she loves reputation (NOT for the same reasons as katara and zuko but they all still vibe with each other) because there's soooo much happening and she can literally feel the beat in her bones and the songs slap so hard and she can rage in peace :))) also she fucks so hard with "picture to burn", the harry styles saga (style, ootw, iion, wonderland, etc), "holy ground", "miss americana and the heartbreak prince" and "the archer" (and believe me she will go OFF at anyone who doesn't like the archer because "the beat's not supposed to drop, that's the whole point -)

zuko: reputation reputation reputation. all the fucking way y'all. is it shocking that "I did something bad" is his song, not his favourite (his favourites are the speak now vault tracks, "that's the way I loved you", "message in a bottle", and "wonderland" but that's neither here nor there) and no one, NO ONE gets in the way during the line "if a man talks shit then I owe him nothing" like sorry taylor, that's zuko's line actually. also he thought he was going to love folklore but then "seven" came up and he literally could not cope, and when he heard evermore was going to be in a similar vein he refused to listen to it too - he did eventually listen to the albums when he got into a better headspace for them and now really does likes them, but he avoids "seven" like the plague

suki: suki loves the breakup albums, red and midnights, and everyone, including suki, is confused because no offence to my girl but she's had one break up and that was with sokka, and whole it was sad, it was mutual and nothing bad happened they just decided they'd be better as friends, but she loves the albums so so much, so who is anyone to deny her that? also, she didn't like "me!" at first and thought it was so so cringe, but now she loves it and hates that she used to hate it and hates that taylor doesn't play it on the set list at concerts due to people hating on it (even though suki would never tell taylor that she hated on one of her songs, she still feels guilty) - btw, she and aang are besties and they work at the same place and it takes them like forty minutes on a good day to drive there so they blast 1989 the whole time and it's such a bop

yue: speak now girly, did I fucking stutter? she ate that album up when it first came out and she ate up the rerecording when that came out too, and don't get me started on the vault tracks (she feels as if a piece of her childhood was missing because "electric touch" ft fallout boy wasn't on the og track and she looooves fallout boy) "enchanted" is her and sokkas song and when it comes on they do a lil dance together even though they don't love each other in the same way anymore, they still love each other!!! but she now loves "enchanted" separate from sokka ya know? yue also loves midnights, literally because suki loves it so so much so yue listened to it for her (simp) and fell in love with it (and suki, it was truly a win win situation for her) but she specifically listens to midnights: 3am version because "paris" is her favourite and she doesn't understand how anyone (ahem, suki) could listen to midnights without listening to "paris" at least three times

azula: we all know she used to pretend to hate taylor swift but now she respects the hustle (but she's not a die hard swiftie and will happily critique her alongside katara, who azula was surprised to see critiquing taylor but katara's got her priorities in place she knows what's up) and azula loves red (duh) and evermore. surprisingly, she's not as into reputation as zuko and katara, and while she enjoys some of the songs on there, she won't intentionally listen to the whole album on her lonesome. she, sokka, and ty lee wore matching "cowboy like me" outfits to the eras tour

mai: fearless, and HEAR ME OUT HEAR ME TBE FUCK OUT I'm right. she's like aang in this regard, she grew up with all these expectations on her for corporation alliances and shit and she couldn't help but picture herself finding love for HERSELF having the CHOICE like, she will defend "love story" to the day she dies because it resonated so much with baby mai finding love against all odds and at the end her parents agreeing to it. now she's older and recognises a few, uh... interesting points about her upbringing, but she's still gonna defend baby mai's love for fearless. I know that the tortured poets department hasn't come out yet but... I have a feeling that mai will fuck SO HARD with that one too, but she's more a fan on individual songs than whole albums ("delicate", "paper rings" (ty lee simp lmao), "seven", "better than revenge", "getaway car", "endgame", etc)

ty lee: she actually sobbed when lover came out, I can't tell you how much lover resonated with her, she loved the aesthetic the vibe the songs, and like she literally had imposter syndrome from being a swiftie because while she appreciates the angry and sad songs, she's searching for the joy and a lot of swifties were like "no she's past that point so we have to be too" and she felt quite isolated BUT then taylor released lover and ty lee felt so so seen cause like, it's a happy album with sad songs and that's all a girl can ask for. ALSO she loves "bejeweled" and "slut!" I kid you not "slut!" is probably her fav song even though it's not on lover. she also loves evermore because it's a sad album with happy songs (do you see) and she broached the idea of her and azula wearing matching "cowboy like me" outfits but azula didn't respond at first and ty lee thought that it wasn't a good idea but azula didn't respond because she was texting sokka and sokka fell in love with the idea and they spent like two weeks figuring out exactly what it would look like and they brought their ideas to ty lee for the final approval and she was like "... you guys actually wanna do this?" but yeah. they all slayed

hakoda screams louder but bato knows more songs, like hakoda is making himself heard what a king, but there's quite a few songs he's unfamiliar with. bato is singing like, the usual volume but he's consistent, he's singing along to every song

hakoda loves 1989 and reputation because the whole drama happened during his and bato's breaks between tours and then they got sent off before reputation came out, so hakoda was so invested and then really pissed cause he had to wait a couple of months before he got back so katara could explain the intricacies of the new album to him

bato is like sokka, he loves folklore not because he's a folklore girly™ but just because of the vibes, however bato 🤝 mai, resonating deeply with "seven"

iroh is convinced that he can ask taylor to pop over for a nice cup of jasmine tea because he doesn't quite grasp how insanely popular she actually is, but unbeknownst to zuko, who scoffs whenever iroh mentions it because "there's no way", iroh is actually in contact with taylor because when she was just starting out she got sick before a concert and iroh have her a tea that helped her maintain her voice and get her back on track and he's been on a group chat with taylor ever since

when I see people saying sometihng like ‘Katara chose Aang over Zuko’ it always feels like they are projecting real hard or have assimilated fandom assumptions into their understanding of the show because Zuko was never a valid option for her and there’s literally no reason to assume that was

they barely speak across the entirety of the show

their dynamic is, until Zuko joins the group, entirely limited to Zuko trying to capture the Avatar and Katara fighting him to stop the last hope of the world from being crushed under Fire Nation boots. The sole exception to this is when they bond over shared trauma and a moment of humanity that is not romantic in nature, and romance would have cheapened it (And that people regard that brief moment as entirely romantic is, I think, a sign of overvaluing romance in general)

after that, she mostly snipes at him until the events of Southern Raiders, and then they still don’t talk that much. Zuko and Toph talk more to each other than Katara and Zuko do

Zuko spends this entire time mooning over Mai, to a degree that its genuinely startling when he drops the stoicism to sigh over her. He shows no sign of being interested in Katara or anyone else at all and the moment Mai is back, he zooms into her arms with a ‘YES MA’AM’ at her warning him not to break up with her again

the only character who assumes otherwise are the Ember Island players (who are explicitly writing a propaganda play straight out of real life imperialist propaganda pieces, with elements of them making fun of common cliches in ATLA fanfic fandom at the time) and June, who doesn’t even know them at all beyond a surface level.

Zuko was never a romantic option. you don’t choose cheese over bread when you never even considered having bread at all. That person at the other table is the one having bread, talk to them about the bread. also in this metaphor Mai is the one with bread.

the thing about it is just that people read in a VERY common relationship vibe between them (Katara as the Good Girl people project onto, and Zuko as the cool and tough nonsense antihero) and aggressively conclude that’s the natural progression of the show despite it never having been hinted at or supported in any way.

Look people this show is not even slightly subtle about its shipping and if you insist that Aang/Katara wasn’t foreshadowed or that Mai and Zuko weren’t set up enough, that’s on you for refusing to pay attention.

Hi, have you watched Avatar The Last Airbender? If so, what kind of bendings do you think the Avatar (blue one) characters would have? Also, if the characters in Cabin had these powers (but they didn't live in the world of ATLA, but still the one you wrote), what would they be and how would they affect the plot? (additionally, I'm curious about the AU where Paz would live and have 4 children with Quaritch (he gives me fire bending vibe), I think they would be different benders, so I'm curious what their children would inherit) Thank you in advance for your answer!

I wish you could have seen how done right giddy I got when I saw this ask. I love Avatar The Last Airbender! I was a little kid when the show was coming out and I loved it since the first episode. One of the extra Nickelodeon channels we had with our cable package did marathon of ATLA every summer with pop up facts on every episode that I’d watch constantly so yeah I’m a pretty big ATLA fan so I love this question so much!

Luckily Avatar is also kinda broken up into elements too

The Metkayina are a water tribe making them all waterbenders with Ronal and Tsireya having an emphasis on healing

I’m going back and forth on whether the Omatikaya should be earth or airbenders because I could see either. If I’m remembering correctly though air nomads where also big on music and the Omatikaya are a musical tribe so I’m going to say they’re all airbenders.

All humans are non benders so Jake, Quaritch and Spider can’t bend. Even after getting there avatars/new body Jake and Quaritch can’t bend. Jake also passed down his non bender abilities to Lo’ak making him the only natural born Na’vi that’s not a bender.

And obviously Kiri is the Avatar. 

Now in Cabin I’m still going to say Jake and Lo’ak are non benders and Kiri is the Avatar but I do think your so right that Quaritch would be a fire bender.

In ATLA and in Avatar the nations/ tribes don’t really mix. They communicate with each other sure but you don’t really see people from two different nations/ tribes getting together. That wouldn’t be the case in my modern au. Different benders would be mixing since the Industrial Revolution (like in legend of Kora) making it so you can pretty much end up with any type of bending regardless of what your parents are.

I think Tuk and Neytiri would still be airbenders. I had to think long and hard about Neytiri because I could also see her as a fire or earth bender because of how fierce she is but then I remembered how terrifying and dangerous a pissed off airbender could be.

Neteyam would be an earth bender. I know most earth benders we see in ATLA are very rowdy people (looking at Toph specifically) but earth to me represents stability and assuredness and that’s Neteyam to me. So an earth bender raised with philosophies of an airbender.

Paz would be an airbender raised with no attachment to any airbender culture so she is not peaceful/ monk like at all

As for Spider I can see it going so many ways. I can see him just being a non-bender putting him at a similar disadvantage as a human on Pandora. I could see him also being either an earth or airbender but I think I’d be most interesting for him to be a fire bender raised with air bender philosophies. Maybe even growing up hating that he’s a fire bender since fire benders are often the villains of the story. So Spider doesn’t use his bending very much. Some times even pretends like he’s a non bender so people feel safer around him.

When Quaritch kidnaps Spider the kid is woefully outmatched. Maybe, since this is a modern a.u something like pressure point patches that “turn off” someone’s bending have been invented. Because we saw fighters in ATLA that could take away someone’s bending temporarily by hitting the right pressure points. So Quaritch attaches these to Spider while he’s unconscious (I don’t know how you force someone to keep them on. Maybe it’s more technical and they actually dig into the skin like a leech and you need a passcode to make them release. I don’t know though that sounds nuts to me. There would have to be a way to lock them on though so you could “take away” someone’s bending semi-permanently) Since Spider doesn’t have his bending Quaritch just keeps the front door locked letting Spider walk around during the day while locking him in his room at night. If Spider gets rebellious Quaritch uses the threat of his bending to keep him in line. He’d never do something that would permanently scar him but Quaritch isn’t one to make empty threats. I could see Spider throwing and breaking things, picking up furniture and beating it against the windows to try and break them. Quaritch lights the palm of his hand and firmly tells him to stop or he’ll regret it. Spider doesn’t stop and before he registers what’s happening Quaritch snatches him up by his braid and turns it to ash in seconds. Spider freezes he’s so stunned and Quaritch just picks him up and tosses him into his room to “cool down.” The experience makes Spider much more cautious about acting out, unwilling to find out just how far Quaritch would take his punishments.

But things would pretty much play out like in Cabin with Quaritch using his bending as a fear tactic to keep Spider from acting out and doling out praise and love when Spider is being good in his eyes slowly eroding Spider’s scene of self and praying on his need for acceptance and love. I doubt he’d ever allow Spider to take the pressure point patches off until he is well and truly brainwashed after years of captivity. I imagine it’d take a few days for his bending to come back after it’s been blocked for so long but once his fire power comes back Quaritch starts training him to use his bending. Quaritch would be a fire bending master with blue flames and also capable of lighting bending. Sparing with his father actually scares Spider (or Miles by that point) even more because he knows without a doubt that he’s no match for him. Not yet at least. It would take years of training but eventually he’d be just as skilled as his father.

Now as for my other a.u’s (which I’m kinda surprised anyone still cares about. I have half baked ideas for a part 5 of the Paz lives modern au and a part 4 of the Cabin au where Quaritch and Paz had four kids before she passed and Quaritch kidnaps all of them, I just truthfully haven’t felt very motivated to finish them since I’m working on my other fics)

So for my o.c’s:

Hunter would be a water bender who’s particularly good at healing. When he’s pissed though he’s terrifying. Totally got mad during a full moon once and blood bended on accident freezing his entire family in there spots. It freaked him out so bad he cried for days. If this is in the Paz lives au where they’re a big happy family then his parents had to take him to therapy and be very gentle and encouraging with him for months before Hunter even thought about using his bending again.

Ada would be a fire bender just like her dad and brother but she really just uses her bending for showy theatrics. She’s a pretty amazing fire dancer.

Gunner is an airbender with the soul of an earth bender and so he’s just kinda bad at it. Makes big hard gust of wind that’ll knock you right over but can’t fly or do any of the more graceful airbender techniques that his mom excels at. Paz is really patient with him though (she doesn’t have a favorite child but it does make her happy that at least one of her children has her bending) and he gets better but he doesn’t get really good until his father works with him. His father’s brutal style of firebending just suits Gunner’s airbending.

OTP: oh absolutely Katara/Zuko. I think they had SUCH a fascinating dynamic and I would have loved to see the slow burn as they eventually begin to rebuild trust and friendship slowly turns into love. They had better chemistry and Katara and Aang worked better as friends I said what I said

Worst pairing ever: Okay, so it's not the worst pairing ever but........ Katara/Aang. Personally, I just never felt like Katara actually reciprocated his feelings, and it really just came across like the writers just decided on them being endgame early on, and then backed themselves into the corner of We Have To Commit To It, No Matter What. I never really got a romantic vibe from her end, and just really would have much preferred it to not go in that direction

Guilty pleasure pairing: Ty-Lee/Azula. I am a sucker for sunshine/grumpy, especially if it involves the absolute betrayal of Ty-Lee siding with Mai??? I eat that shit UP

A pairing you want to see more: Okay this is absolutely just me being a lesbian but Katara/Azula could have made a BOMBASS power couple. Like,, imagine??? If Azula had gotten the redemption arc she deserved in the show, just imagine how unstoppable they would have been

The Swamp Re-Watch

Alright, this episode was a fun spooky adventure. I enjoyed the ghostly nature of the Swamp as a setting. Loved the horror movie moments as well as the opportunity for characters like Yue & Kya to haunt the narrative a little. Grief is an ongoing theme in Avatar, & it's fun to see it presented in the form of characters who are gone reappearing as visions.

(Something to keep in mind as I write this recap review is that I have been drinking wine steadily since 3 pm & it's now 3 am soooo about 12 hours? I'm not an alcoholic or on a bender, it's just Thanksgiving & I was with family now I'm home. Uh, the point is, I am doing my very bestest to be coherent okay 🙂)

Anywayyy! This episode was fun. I was gonna say I think this is the first time I'll really disagree with @theowritesfiction's overall opinion on the episode as we both do our re-watches because I really did enjoy this episode & I can't say anything negative about it but then I re-read the re-watch post in question & actually I overall agree with the commentary made. I just enjoyed the episode personally.

I think this episode's main fun comes from the ghostly vibe & overall horror movie homage vibe but it's also significant for the characters.

We see Katara seeing Kya again & breaking down. I think the main issue I have with this if I'm critiquing the writing, is that we should've gotten more...not closure, but emotional impact maybe? from that interaction. I think that part of the reason Katara's "complaints about her dead mom" are critiqued in this fandom (aside from blatant sexism & fandom idiocracy when it comes to Katara) DOES have to do with the way we're never really given significant flashbacks that tell us anything about Kya herself. Even this ghostly vision has her back turned. Can't haunt the narrative if you were never really a character. Still, it's an emotional moment for Katara, & important for understanding her character & the grief she is still holding onto.

I'm really glad that we got to see Yue again, & her vision's accusations that Sokka "didn't protect her" hit hard. Unlike the vision of Kya, I think that from a writing perspective, the vision of Yue was really thoughtful & fascinating. The real Yue chose to sacrifice herself & would never have blamed anyone else for her death. This vision berates Sokka for not doing better. I think that this says a lot about the nature of the Swamp. It doesn't show you actual ghosts, it shows you your own psyche.

That said....actually now my original thesis or like, point or whatever that this episode was super well written actually is falling apart because how does that fit in with the swamp guru dude's speech?

"In the swamp, we see visions of people we've lost, people we loved, folks we think are gone. [The shot cuts to show the people that Sokka and Katara saw in the swamp, before cutting back to Huu.] But the swamp tells us they're not. We're still connected to them. Time is an illusion and so is death."

My theory about this is that Huu doesn't fully understand the Swamp himself. No other option makes sense to me, because I think that the visions Sokka & Katara had only make sense from their own perspectives as manifestations of their grief. Kya turning away & saying nothing & Yue making Sokka feel worse for not preventing her death makes no sense unless it's Sokka & Katara's own fears manifesting. This isn't digging too deep or Pepe Sylvia-ing even, it's just...true. Huu, you don't get the Swamp, I'm stating it as fact now.

Anyway anyway. Um, on to Aang's vision! TOPH MY BELOVED <3 I love it but I also hate it. Again, I'm pissed that the whole "time is an illusion" thing just does not work because Kya & Yue's presence/actions/vibe literally just do not make sense in that context, it has to be a psychological thing for Sokka & Katara BUT the "time is an illusion" thing IS a clever allusion (ahhh I love getting to use that word when we're also talking about 'illusions') to Toph's future introduction.

Okay, I'm gonna be real honest with you guys I've been drinking even more wine the entire time I've been writing this re-cap/review & I'm running out of remotely intelligible thoughts (maybe none of these make the mark) BUT I thought of a funny idea. @theowritesfiction is doing a jerk point competition right? Okay well, I'm gonna do a "Iconic Points " competition. Basically, every time a character behaves in a way that makes me go "iconic" they get points. I have been trying to think of a fun - ummm I can't think of a word other than "alternative" but I KNOW that's not the word I'm looking for? but whatever - alternative to the "jerk points" thing to do myself & here we are.

Since I'm starting this competition late, the characters are getting raw points from Book 1 based fully on Wine Tipsy™ Rose's vague memories, which I think is a 100% Fair & Neutral & Objective (/joking) way to start this competition:

Katara: 1000 points for 'Imprisoned' & the pirate episode combined

Zuko: 1000 points for - well, I can't think of a specific instance but ILY Book 1 Zuko you depressed bastard you deserve some points

Jet: 1001 points - he gets 1 more point than Zuko & Katar for becoming one of my favorite characters in just one episode while they both took an entire season also for being better than everyone & done dirty by the Narrative™ AND the fandom & therefore deserving for first place status thus far

Sokka: 1000 points total. 800 points for 'The Northern Air Temple.' 200 for the Northern Siege episodes for making me fall in love with Yuekka & generally acting badass

Aang: 1000 points for Book 1 as an entirety because he had a lot of iconic moments, especially kicking Zhao & Zuko's asses

Yue: 1050 for the same reasons as Jet AND for sacrificing herself for the greater good

Book 2 so far:

Gaang: 0, they've been fine I guess but none of them have won any points sorry

Azula: 2000 for...I don't know? Everything? If you have to ask you've failed some kind of litmus test

Mai: 1000 for trying to kill the Gaang

Ty Lee: 1000 for acting suave about her childhood crush trying to kill her

For the ship asks! If we're talking Avatar, what about Mei and Zuko?

I'll be honest, I'm not fond of it. I don't really like mei in the first place - apathy never sits well with me, and she never actually changed her mind? Mei at the start is mei at the end. She didn't think what the fire nation was doing was wrong, and she only sided against Azula to stay with Zuko, which would be sweet if she... actually liked him? And I don't think she does? She was happy with Zuko during his time back at the fire nation when he was acting the part of Ozai's favoured son, and its just... eeh. They give me bad vibes, I don't know. I wouldn't be surprised if she threw a knife at him properly one of these days.

Plus, Mei doesn't have much of a character outside Zuko. I'd rather shew her development than her stagnation, and keeping her with Zuko keeps her the same. In the end, mostly, me*ko just bores me, which is the nail in the coffin for any ship. At least if I hated it I'd feel something, yk? I prefer meilee or even meizula and... really any other zuko ship (aside from aang >-< yike) over meiko, but... I wouldn't, like, absolutely hate it if a good fic had meiko in it, you know? I just don't like them in canon. Much like I've said before, I'm willing to give things their fair shot. It's just that Mei herself is a hard sell for me as a focal character. It's not even that she's a 'bad' person - I read Azula and Jet-centric fics, and even memorably one Ozai centred fic (time travel, it was interesting start but still a wip though so going to see where it leads) - it's more that I just don't know what to do with her. She's kind of a meh girlfriend and kind of a whatever person, to me.

In comparison, Zuko is literally The redemption arc guy. He's the character people want to replicate the success of. Zuko is such a person that he's iconic and Mei is kinda... there. For the record, I didn't even know she existed until I watched the show. Zukka and Zutara and Zuko's character arc were well known to me, but Mei was not. I ended up only liking zukka platonically, not minding and sometimes supporting zutara, shipping jetko for the angst and the parallelism, even giving some really au zuko stuff like that one toph arranged marriage series or his leadership/friendship/family dynamics with his crew a go, jin/zuko, song/zuko - loads of things! On the other hand, Mei didn't have much going for her in my estimation to begin with, and her portrayal by competing ship fans probably didn't help. There was one where she tried to kill him after the war ended, lmao. That was silly. But still. Bias is easy to build, even without meaning to.

So, would I say I like meiko? No. Would I say I hate it? Depends on the portrayal. Much like ronmione, I don't think it would take a lot of tweaking to make her abusive, specifically also without being OOC, which worries me. So I just don't poke that sleeping dragon and hang out in the other ship spaces.

In the end, I think they just didn't understand each other on a fundamental level. (Also important; Zuko never seemed to know what to do with her, the things shed like or appreciate, and never seemed to take her own expressions - mild as they were - of affection as well as one would expect were he actually in love with her, which is itself important to note, though of course also just my own interpretation of what we were given; a lot of their scenes were cut off at some of the most important parts, which doesnt quite sit right with me.) And I need something to dig my teeth into that just wasn't present for their relationship, except in ways I couldn't interpret positively. A shame, but oh well. We can't all like everything :).

absolutely not. toph has never cared much about her appearance for obvious reasons. there are times where she feels more self conscious than usual, but at the end of the day she’s never known what she looks like and that’s just something they live and deal with.

does your muse consider the way they dress to be trendy? would other people agree?

literally no clue. toph would say it’s trendy just because they assume they’re always going to be cool, but realistic she just doesn’t know. i would say for the vibe toph goes for it could definitely be seen as trendy/

how often do they buy new clothes? are they the type to keep a outfit for years or replace it after one wear?

rarely. toph will absolutely wear clothes until they’re falling apart and then finally admit she needs new ones.

is your muse the type to accessorize? how much?

not much. their hair is often up because vision or not the feeling of it on her neck is terrible and inconvenient, so sometimes there’s a headband or scrunchie, and toph will appreciate a hat here and there, but that’s usually it. there’s also the bracelet she made herself with meteor rock that toph wears all the time.

how much time do they spend on skin care/makeup/grooming?

zero to none. toph washes their face before going to sleep, but sometimes that does just mean splashing some water on themselves and calling it a day.

if money and societal expectations were not a concern would your muse dress differently than they currently do? if so, how?

maybe just a bit more similar to how they dressed back home. it’s hard for toph to find similar clothes here, which s the real problem though. money and confidence are certainly not stopping her.

toph would wear the same outfit for a week in a row well knowing they’re going to see people the fuck?

toph wears stuff that’s more typical for washington rather than what she was wearing back home. it’s just easier to find, and honestly toph doesn’t mind the transition. there are a lot of comfortable clothes here, and since she isn’t fighting every day she doesn’t need to worry as much about wrapping herself

my added general description.

i made this edit pretty easily, and then got to these questions and lost my mind a little bit because, toph is obviously blind, and looks rarely concern her. toph knows how to make themselves look good, or at least societally acceptable, as a result of how she was born, but it’s not something toph cares about doing unless absolutely required. toph prioritizes comfort above all else, and being able to move easily in whatever she’s wearing. toph still does a decent amount of fighting and bending in the city, so full mobility is absolutely key. it’s mostly going to be a lazy girl vibe or workout clothes. toph is also particular to being bare footed so that she can use her earthbending on the ground, but since that’s not super acceptance she has shoes with the bottoms taken out, so it appears like they’re wearing shoes but the soles of their feet are still on the ground. toph tends to stick to greens and browns, not that she knows what they look like, but toph knows those are earth tones, and needs to represent her likes. she’s definitely sensitive to textures and sticks to simple cotton as much as possible. there is definitely some amount of tearing or dirt on just about all their clothes because of just how rough and tumblr they tend to be. it’s inevitable no matter how often things are washed.

Animorphs/Discworld/ATLA who things what about which.

Ok. I already did how the Animorphs feel about the Discworld books. (Caveat it's been a while since I've read most of the Discworld books and I haven't actually finished Animorphs.) So, how the Animorphs would feel about ATLA if that was on TV while the books were happening or when they were a bit younger.

First thing that jumps out at me is Aang's pacifism, which presumably Cassie would vibe with, but which the others might have very little patience with. Perhaps especially Marco. These people killed his entire people! How can Aang care about the life of Firelord, the grandson of the person who was responsible for his people's genocide, unless he doesn't value their lives?

I think probably all of them would love the elemental combat magic, I mean, who wouldn't like that sort of thing?

I just said (prev post) that Rachel would love Karara, but on second thought I think she'd REALLY love Toph. Life goals. Toph doesn't care what anyone thinks and she can beat guys twice her height. And she's capable of following social rules but won't do it when she doesn't want to. Epic. 10/10 would go on a crime spree with.

On the subject of Cassie liking that everyone in the Discworld books is a person, well, so is everyone in ATLA. Even scenery characters with one or two lines. The show's especially careful to humanize people in the Fire Nation -- members of the royal family, ordinary soldiers, civilians -- and she'd love that. And you know she's watched Appa's Lost Days over. And over. And over. If Cassie got to be a bender she'd want to be an airbender. And of course she's a huge fan of Zuko's redemption arc. People can change!

Marco doesn't like the show. I hate to say it but it's true. Because it makes it too hard to not think about his mom. I mean. He kind of likes it. But it also gives him lots of feels and he's not going to TALK about it ok? He certainly doesn't want anyone else to think about his mom and maybe feel sorry for him. He also thinks Toph is Life Goals.

Ax's favorite episode is the northern air temple one. He's fascinated at the idea of humans flying. Imagine, humans flying! They can barely even jump!

Ax also sympathizes with Sokka on the "supposed to be a warrior but was left behind when the fighting happened" front. He's glad Sokka eventually gets one of those hand held substitute tail blades humans use. Probably thinks the human Animorphs should get some of those too, just in case they ever have to fight out of morph. (He also sympathizes with Zuko about being a long way from home and maybe never going to get to go back. He's not going to talk about that though, much like Marco isn't going to talk about missing his mother.)

Tobias also likes the northern air temple episode, for some reason. He ships Aang and Katara. He wants to be like Sokka. He'd be an airbender because airbending is the coolest bending. And because of flying. He likes the great divide episode because there's a park ranger. I'm not sure what his opinions on the messenger hawks are, but I'm sure they're very strong opinions.

Jake. Hmm, Jake. Jake likes Azula. I mean, she's a villain, so it's not like he thinks she's a good person -- and a lot of what he's picking up from her on the how to be a leader front is how NOT to do things -- but she's a good character. And, well, sometimes he needs to think about someone who understands how much pressure he's under. Azula understands that. (Sokka understands that too, and he does pick up some "how to be a leader when your group only kinda sorta does leaders" from him. Jake is super different from Sokka though. Sokka is a planner. Jake is an improviser. His plans tend to suck, but when they fall through he can pivot ok.) (ah shit now I also have to do Leverage.)
