i know i said that I'm dropping this topic but like, i find it funny and veerrryyyy annoying how those rexmet haters adds like "THERE'S A SCENE IN THE MOVIE WHERE EMMET CALLS REX HIS BROTHER SO IT'S INCEST!!" or whatever for their whole ""list of why Rexmet is a horrible ship"" thing
aka bcuz of this scene
when in reality, they're not really brothers in the first place??? like, if you see them as "real brothers", then that's also just an AU and chet, they're more so like a found family type of brothers chet if you see them as brothers honestly
and also the fact that they also add like "MAKING AUS WHERE REX IS ALIVE AND IS REDEEMED IS WRONG CUZ REX IS A UNREDEEMABLE VILLAIN AND HE'S DEAD IN CANON SO HAH!!" next to it
...then that also applies to your whole "they're brothers" thing, so y'all are also fighting yourselves cuz that is also just an AU cuz Rex is alive and is redeemed lol, and that's why it's called AU, "Alternative Universe" or "Alternative Timeline" and chet like that bcuz he's gone in canon, and like, canonically, the Emmet in TLM2 is the AU one if you think about it cuz Rex is like the og Emmet and then he time travelled to changed the everything
and he's not a unredeemable villain, he's still the lovable Emmet that y'all keep saying but turned into a "bad guy" and is still redeemable like the movie itself said lol
and this whole scene is just a joke lmao, cuz like, see how out of place it is for Emmet to just suddenly say "I can be the brother you never have!" when Rex doesn't even need a brother in the first place, especially with his whole backstory what he needs is to be not alone
even before i didn't ship them, i felt that whole thing that Emmet said was out of place lmao
the movie is just being funny and serious at the same time
but the book
Tumblr media
that book is serious
and even my brother who doesn't ship them also knows that that scene is a joke / making fun of other movies who does those kinds of chet lol
okay, i am done for real this time
i just wanna get this whole thing out :P

the insane thing about voltron: legendary defender 2016-2018 featuring esteemed actor Steven Yeun is that it was honest to God CRAZY queerbait. like. it's the only time I've ever been fucking GASLIT by a TV show. because they were showing you scenes that were so OBVIOUSLY written to be part of a rivals to lovers story, like, scenes where these two twinks were quite literally an INCH away from each other's faces, having heart to hearts in bedrooms and at SUNSETS, waxing poetry about how they secretly thought the other was actually very important and wonderful, smirking at each other, and saying shit like 'ha. like that?' in a voice like he's sucking someone's DICK (NOT JOKING). and they show you all these scenes and they're like 'heyyy see these guys? you like these guys? they're kinda cute together, huh?' and you're like 'yeahhh they kinda are! wait so are they endgame?' and then they spin their heads like the cop in the lego movie and they say 'NO. WHAT? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? THEYRE FRIENDS! DUDES! BROS! AND THEIR BEAUTIFUL CONVERSATION ABOUT SELF WORTH AND HOW MUCH THEY CARE FOR EACH OTHER IS ACTUALLY JUST THE GAYER I MEAN ALTERNATIVE LOOKING ONE PREPARING THE OTHER FOR HIS DATE. WITH A WOMAN. A GIRL. A FEMININE LADY. fuck you. you're insane. also we killed the actual canon gay character. SUCK A FAT ONE LOSERSSSS !!!' and it was 2018 and you just had to deal with it. cause everyone else was apparently fucking insane and started 1. shitting on the woman 'stuck in the middle' of the not-gay guys (who also drew the short straw, being one of the only women of colour in the show and getting killed off at the end for funsies) and 2. SENDING GLASS CUPCAKES TO THE VOICE ACTORS. and you didnt want to be associated with them. so imagine that. and now imagine you're esteemed actor Steven Yeun. and your character is the not-gay gay one. jesus christ.

SPM
According to my list of topics, I should talk about Super Paper Mario. Fair enough, I really enjoyed that game as a kid. Slight problem, though, is that I haven’t played it in at least a decade, and definitely don’t have time to pick it up right now.
Tumblr media
(shit how did i miss that IS worked on this?)
So what the fuck do I, of all people, have to say about this game in particular?
When my family got our Nintendo Wii, we did end up getting a fair few games with it. Living in Malaysia meant that after we got the thing modded we could have it run the counterfeits and burned discs that flooded the country’s market in the late 00s, so there was plenty of cheap options to pick up- I’m pretty sure I’ve still not played half of the Wii discs we have.
As you may guess, not a lot of them stuck. Super Smash Brothers Brawl was one of them, obviously, as well as the Guitar Hero games. The Lego games (Batman, Indiana Jones, and Star Wars) were pretty big between my brother and I, and there was obviously Mario Kart in the mix somewhere. Funnily enough, I don’t think I ever actually finished Super Mario Galaxy, and I barely touched the sequel, and regrettably we never owned Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime, or Return to Dream Land. What I’m getting at is that I didn’t really experience the full might of the Wii, because I was too busy hyperfixating on a few specific games. And playing the DS.
Tumblr media
So where does that leave Super Paper Mario? It definitely fell into the latter camp. I think the thing that drew me to the game in the first place was having thoroughly obsessed over New Super Mario Bros when that game came out- I have distinct memories of huddling up with that game at a mate’s place just passing back and forth trying to beat 8-1, trying to stay quiet so we wouldn’t wake his parents up. Kid me wanted more Mario, and New Super Mario Bros Wii was still 2 years out, so SPM was the first console Mario I actually got to dive into. And obviously, it’s a bit different.
Super Paper Mario has a lot of things other Mario games didn’t. A real plotline, complete with cutscenes and dramatic turns. Dialogue, and a lot of it, and all of it wittily written to give the game a great comedic tone. It has RPG elements, it has puzzles (which I was a big fan of), and it had the ability to play as Bowser. What wasn’t to love?
It does kind of go beyond that, though. Just about everything about SPM’s design is unique, and also, really freaking good. As an example, while the idea of a lot of platform games is for each set of levels to have a theme, each of the eight worlds in Super Paper Mario (save perhaps the last one) has multiple aspects to it to make sure everything stays fresh. World 1 is the traditional Mario field level, but eventually you pass through a desert town and into a huge temple. World 3 is a homage to gaming’s routes, with its pixelated landscape and enemies, but also has its plot and final level centre around playing fun at the nerd culture that would obsess over details like that. World 6 appears to be a Samurai/Feudal Japan world, until it fucking ends in one of the bleakest scenes in any Mario game, ever.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah the plot of this game gets surprisingly dark. The cute style used means that the writers were able to intensify the game’s creepier elements without bumping the rating up, and they make full use of that. The noises made by the World 2 boss when her true form is revealed, the part of the game where you quite literally end up in hell, not to mention everything to do with the river Styx equivalent. I have no idea how they got all that under the radar, frankly.
I’m not going to act like this game is perfect, though. I recall trying for 100% completion until I eventually realised that collecting every single trading card and making every single recipe was basically just pointless busywork- honestly, once the game’s story ends, there’s not much reason to keep going unless you’re really keen on grinding through the Pits of 100 Trials or Sammer Kingdom Challenge. The mechanics can be a little wonky, and some levels can get pretty confusing, and it does have the early Nintendo console release issue of awkwardly (but mandatorily) cramming the console’s gimmick in- you literally cannot play this game without a Wiimote, even if you’re in postgame and don’t need Tippi’s advice. But I do think the game is genuinely excellent despite all this. It’s funny, it’s fun, and while it’s not as consistent, it’s probably overall more interesting than most 2D Mario platformers in my opinion.
Tumblr media
However, this isn’t the viewpoint most people talking about this game have, to my knowledge. I believe most of the people you see online talking about this game are those who played the original Paper Mario or its beloved sequel before coming around to this particular entry, and as such were probably disappointed by a lot of the changes made to its formula. Every other Paper Mario game has ben a JRPG, as opposed to the hybrid system this game goes for, and that’s going to be a serious point of contention for long time fans. And my understanding is that The Thousand Year Door would have been a nigh-impossible act to follow for any game, major changes to the gameplay or not.
Because I have a different entry point to the series, however, I don’t see it the same way. Super Paper Mario is Paper Mario to me, especially since I still haven’t played any of the other games. And I think that’s something worth noting when more divisive topics come up- it’s a microcosm of the value of perspective in debate. I’m not going to judge someone for really not liking this game, because there’s a really solid chance that it just wasn’t what they were looking for in a Paper Mario game, same as I wouldn’t judge someone for loving the Star Wars prequels because those were the Star Wars movies of their childhood. Which, thinking about it, is also true for me. How you came to a game like this I think defines a lot about what you take from it, and I guess I’m just lucky enough to have been coming from the right angle for this one.

Trending 27th - January 2020
What have been your efforts in the campaign for SaveWOY and what are your upcoming plans to save WOY? Now this is a question worth answering!
In the past, I made a little list of the things I did to support SaveWOY and bring awareness to Wander Over Yonder’s existence and its third season plans. Since then, I’ve done a whole lot more from hand-drawn art to more intricate art. Some of them are almost as special as that signed poster @peepsqueak got from the WOY crew as a token of their gratitude.
Here’s an updated list of everything I did for SaveWOY so far:
Attended the SaveWOY picnic at Griffith Park, where I got to sign a banner.
Pointed out various higher-ups involved in the business of Disney television.
Sent several letters to the higher-ups, some of which had envelopes with an image of the downed space pod taped to them.
Started a weekly Twitter post series, SaveWOY Thought of the Week.
Made Lite-Brite art of Wander and Lord Hater, which Craig McCracken and Francisco Angones liked.
Attended D23 2017 with an Operation: FORCE drawing of Hater, a colored page of Wander and Sylvia and a few facts about WOY, and an orange pen with a green hat (I got the hat from the aforementioned picnic) - there, I signed a bench with Wander and the phrase, “Never hurts to help.”
Signed my name, drew Wander (and my own character, Jacken DeBox), and wrote, “Happiest place in outer space!” on the highest beam for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
Wrote a letter (and drew Wander) for the victims of the Las Vegas tragedy with the message, “The darkest times call for the sunniest smiles!”
Got Craig to reveal the name of the ship (said to play a BIG part in S3, made a cameo in Future-Worm) when I commented that we’d have to figure out the name - his response: “The ship is called The Star Nomad.”
Wrote a couple of cards to two Disney higher-ups with the message, “A little nice makes naughty think twice!”
Drew Dominator in a situation that might take place several seconds after she passes the downed space pod, just in time for Noël Wells’s B-day.
Made the Star Nomad with LEGO Digital Designer.
Made three images in the style of the original Star Wars trilogy VHS set.
Posted 50 WOYS3PredictionPolls on Twitter.
Made an image of “The First 5 Years” with over 140 individuals (including the question marks for 3 new mains and 2 new regulars - I still want to know what they look like!) and one cleverly made Hidden Mickey.
Shared WOY-related images from my 1st 5 Years fan art on Twitter acknowledging the B-days of most of the voice actors (Charlie Adler, Kevin Michael Richardson, Ken Marino, Josh Sussman, H. Michael Croner, James Adomian, Jason Ritter, and Piotr Michael clearly noticed).
Typed a summary of how I think the S3 premiere would go.
Typed lyrics to “Let’s Go Soarin’ and Explorin’,” a song from my aforementioned S3 premiere summary. Wouldn’t it be great if Andy Bean used it?
Made a microgame with WarioWare: D.I.Y. where the player has to spin the fan to make the Star Nomad fly. Part of a chorus from “Let’s Go Soarin’ and Explorin’” included.
Started FanCharacterFriday on Twitter - more Tumblr users seem to like Dr. Otmar Vunderbar.
Made a short comic page of Lord Hater trying to break out of the DTVA vault plus a sly reminder that Disney owns the rights to WOY.
Shared a list of potential episode titles for S3.
Made an actual LEGO Star Nomad based on the model made with LDD. Hopefully, those who worked on WOY have noticed. In case you missed it, here’s a picture...
Tumblr media
Now, the ideas I have in mind for further boosting support for the campaign. I may not be able to do most of them myself, but they are certainly for everyone’s consideration.
Provide updated information of higher-ups (if any).
As soon as we find out what Kid Cosmic looks like, expect fan art of him saying, “Watch my show and tell your friends so we’ll make that Mousey Company pay for what they did to my half-brother!”
Another SaveWOY picnic - if there’s one in my general area, you can count me in.
LP album artwork of My Fair Hatey.
A mural identical to that of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate consisting of not just characters from WOY, but also characters who were said to debut in S3 and characters who’d fit in perfectly, namely some of my OCs.
Pumpkin stencils of the main characters for Halloween.
Drawings of various WOY characters stuck on the ex-secret planet explaining why they need to leave said planet. Maybe I could also show how the galaxy’s villains would react if they learn that Lord Dominator’s been bested by Lord Hater.
Drawings consisting of SaveWOY-related messages spoken by the main characters from Disney shows that got at least three seasons (e.g. DuckTales, Fish Hooks), tons of love from the viewers and the executives (e.g. Gravity Falls), or both (e.g. SvtFoE, Mickey Mouse ‘13).
Example with Phineas and Ferb:
Phineas: “We may be creative and famous, but we’re not the ones who came up with the Star Nomad. It’s the ship powered by orbbles! Orbbles! I’d LOVE to see it take flight, wouldn’t you? If you let Mr. McCracken end the show his way, and not the executive way, which, truth be told, is the absolute worst, Wander will surely be elated!”
Ferb: “The Orbble Transporter was invented by conjoined twin brothers, voiced by the performers of the theme song.”
Irving (peeking in from the side): “Speaking of voices, the titular main character sounds JUST LIKE ME! How could you possibly resist?! And look, just because I’m the biggest fan of these guys (gesturing to P&F) doesn’t mean I have no interest in what’s planned for the furry orange fella!”
Since I’m a full-time Disneyland cast member, I should be able to make contacts with anyone who might have more clues about what S3 would entail. It might be a long shot, but if I’m able to convince Disney that WOY’s influence on my life boosted my chance at gaining employment at the company, they should understand.
A weekly Jeopardy-type pop quiz on Twitter - here’s the catch: you must refrain from finding information online when you read the answer (I bet you that the most hardcore fans of the most popular shows will get most of the questions wrong).
Example: This arachnomorph got his name from a dog tag he swallowed when he infiltrated a fish-shaped ship. He later became Lord Hater’s beloved pet.
-Who is Captain Tim?
Summaries of S3 episodes I made up myself a while back.
More fan-made characters - my most recent is an elected official of Cluckon, Mayor Spye C. Drumstick.
Conjuring a logo that best fits the status of S3/TV movie - Wander Over Yonder: The New Galaxy (the center would have the silhouette of the Star Nomad with Wander and Sylvia on it).
Brainstorming possible ideas for the three new main characters.
If all else fails, I suggest we make a web comic based on the hints we accumulated back in 2016 and what we learned from the cameo in Future-Worm’s finale. Team Sea3on has been taking that approach for SatAM Sonic the Hedgehog S3, though they are also making an animated version.
That’s about all I’ve got so far. In closing, I have several questions to ask as the new decade kicks off.
Disney executives: Are you even listening to us WOY fans? What more do you want? I’ve done so much for the campaign that I feel I’m entitled to know everything that was planned for WOY’s third and final season, especially now that I’m working full-time for your company. If you tell us what your demands are, we’d be happy to oblige.
@crackmccraigen: Are you aware of how hard the fans and I have been trying to talk Disney into giving you the chance for true closure? We’ll make sure we watch KC when it comes out on Netflix. If we’re lucky, we might see WOY get added to Disney+, where it should get that closure, assuming you’ll have finished KC your way before then.
@suspendersofdisbelief: I know you’re super busy with DuckTales and you love the plans for WOY S3 so much that you can’t bear to reveal it all in one post, but it’s been waaaay too long since we got any hints from you. Are there any other WOY S3-related facts you could describe in much greater detail? The campaign could do with more motivation.
Non-WOY fans: Are you convinced? Need I remind you what’s in the end tag of the “last” episode of WOY? You know there’s much more to life than tales from the land of Ooo, a blue middle school cat boy in a world of unusual individuals, adolescent twins in an Oregon town filled with oddities, a half-gem half-human protagonist, a coming-of-age princess of Mewni, a trio of ursine trend-followers in San Francisco, and all that jazz. If you’re not one bit interested in Hater’s origin story and all that was planned for S3, it’s your loss.
Pessimists: Will you please dispense with this unnerving “Wander is dead” talk? As a certain Popeye would say, “That’s all I can stands, I can’t stands no more!” You’re not trying to let the Disney bosses win, are you? You probably used to think previously canceled shows like Hey Arnold!, Samurai Jack, and Young Justice could never be brought back. The point is, all is not lost.
@peepsqueak and WOY fans/SaveWOY supporters: Have I been of assistance? Almost every remark I’ve ever made shows wit and perception. I mean, just think. Wander is still stuck in that vault where his goal of reforming Lord Hater remains incomplete, and he has no idea of what threat awaits him. He says, “Glorn, help us.” It’ll take something big and extraordinary to convince every Disney fan (and perhaps every Netflix fan) to talk some sense into the higher-ups. Not to mention the replacement/back-up voice actors we’ll have to find if Disney takes even longer (we already lost one - René Auberjonois). We shan’t rest until we get the answers!

I'm not a proper woman -
I wasn't a proper girl. I didn't like dolls and I hated pink. I liked dirt and legos, climbing and building.
My Grandma loves to tell the story of how, for my 6th birthday, all my girlfriends had put on their pretty dresses and how I sat in the middle of the room, eating cake topless in blue corduroy trousers.
I had short hair and people mistook me for my brother. Then I let it grow. My dad would put hair clips on it to hold my growing fringe and I'd take them off on my way to school.
I watched the world through my hair and the proper girls, the girly girls, the real girls, the mean girls said that I wasn't allowed to play with them. We played a game where girls had to catch boys or the other way around. And I wasn't a boy but I couldn't be a girl.
Maybe it was because I didn't wear dresses often. But dresses got in the way of climbing trees and I'd been told that rolling around in a dress was wrong because it showed my underwear. And that was wrong too. I had some dresses still, with huge flowers : sunflowers and poppies, daisies and little olive tree branches. But still.
I couldn't play with the mean girls. I didn't mind much not playing, I didn't care for their games. When we played house I was always the father and he never did anything. I didn't get why, my father did lots of things. Marbles were cool, Pokemons too. Playmobil were best. We made up stories that lasted weeks with complicated plots and twists, we drew up decors and invented plays and songs and had little shows for our families.
I wasn't a sad child, I had girlfriends, I just wasn't one of the girls. I had boy friends as well, and I didn't get why people said my best guy friend was my boyfriend, I was 9. It was annoying but they'd laugh when we said no so we stopped responding.
I wasn't a proper tween girl either. I had the body all right, my breasts grew in when I was 10, my period came when I was 11. I wasn't ready. I had no use for them. I wore my brother's baggy jeans and T-shirts. My favourite sweater was a men's XL. I still wear it. It's still too big. My clothes were comfy and easy to move in. They didn't like it. They really didn't. They didn't like the hair either. It was long, yes, like a girl's should be. But unkempt! Unstraightened! Too big! Too bushy! And I was too wild. Too quiet. Too smart. Too strange. Then too violent.
Boys were fine, we'd fight then move on. They made me one of the boys. I was invited to referee a dick-length contest. I declined.
Girls on the other hand... Girls I couldn't hit. Didn't dare. Couldn't face the drama. And well, you can't hit girls right? And they didn't. They never touched me. They didn't talk to me . They talked about me. Within earshot. About my hair and how wrong it was. About the rats that lived in it. About my clothes that were wrong. About my brother who was so popular so why was I so weird?  So they didn't talk to me. Why risk it? 800 kids, 20 real mean girls, one true friend, a decent number of dude bros, a dozen talking acquaintances. And a silent majority. That one friend who did risk it, well, they talked about her too. And threw ink at her. And basketballs straight at her face. She wasn't violent.
I didn't get them. Didn't care about make up , celebrities, reality T.V., boys as love interests, clothes. I cared about books and stories, music and politics, climbing trees and building stuff. So I hated them. And all the things they said were nice, and all the thing they said I should like because I was a girl, I hated them too. Because, clearly, girls were stupid and mean and hollow and being a girl was not a thing you should aspire to be.
I was a proper high school girl though. I experimented with clothes : hippie, punk, long skirts, shorts skirts, thighs, jeans, DocMartens. Bright orange ones.
I was a proper girl then. Lusted after. Men hit on me, catcalled me, whispered lewd comments as I walked past, showed me their genitals (in broad daylight, in a public park), propositioned me, stared at me, smiled at me. Then insulted me and yelled at me if I didn't smile back or when I didn't respond. They followed me, scared me sometimes. But mostly, I thought it was okay. Flattering, bothering, frightening, but kind of funny. I had some power over them. But they didn't know me. And they didn't want to. Not really.
They didn't know I wasn't a proper girl. I was too loud, too opinionated, too indecent, too sexy or not enough, not into dating or hooking up, too enthusiastic, too smart and still too weird.
So when that first guy tried to date me and then later when my first boyfriend said he loved me, I was 17 and I was surprised. Lust I could get ,but love? I was that friend who's technically female but not dating material . Too much. Too bossy.
Then I became a proper woman. I had a boyfriend so I could use him as a shield against unwanted male attention. Because “no” doesn't work but “I have a boyfriend/ brother/father” does. I invented excuses for the men, told them my whole-guys family who was really into rugby was waiting for me at home. It worked. I hated it but it worked.
It took me years to stop hating girly things, even longer to start liking them.
But when I wear a dress to work after months of winter jeans and hear “oh! You've dressed as a girl today” or when I walk in a make-up a store and instantly feel as if I'm somehow failing because I have no idea (and no interest in knowing) what 's what and how and why it's used, I'm still made to feel that I'm not a proper woman.
I changed my own tires at work and my colleagues told me to ask a guy.
Am I not enough? Am I a woman and so in need of help or misbehaving when I do “guy stuff” but not a woman the rest of the time because dresses are still unpractical and make-up still makes my face feel weird and gossip still throws me back to middle school mean girls? Am I not a proper woman when I don't fit the stereotype but still “just” a woman if I dare act outside the female realm?
I've lived the hassles : the periods, the street harrassment, the catcalling and the following, the body image pressure, the “you're hot so you must be dumb” followed by the “oh no! You're smart and opinionated so you're too loud”, the “your clothes are too sexy”, “your clothes aren't sexy enough”, the “ it's a shame you don't make some effort to dress up, you can be so pretty”, the assumption you can't do a thing and the amazement when it turns out you can, the “she must be wearing the pants” comments, all of it.
I've also lived the good parts: the proper friendships, the solidarity, the emotional support and openness, the endless talks and the mindless fun of female friendship, the physical pleasures of the female body. I've learned to love some girly things and what I still don't like, I really don't, I'm no longer just rejecting. Because girly things aren't bad. Girls aren't mean and hollow and cruel. They're sometimes made that way. But they're not, they shouldn't have to be.
And I wish I'd been told that more. Or at all.
And girls aren't just one thing. We're not just different looking dolls with a hive mind. I wish we'd say that more.
And boys aren't the default to fall back on when you're not girly enough.
So now I'm a proper woman, not a cliché, not a stereotype and not the flawed version of a boy or the mutated version of a girly girl.
Not just a woman either. A woman. An entire human being. At last.
And I wish women felt that more.

The Weekend Warrior Feb. 14, 2020 – SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, FANTASY ISLAND, THE PHOTOGRAPH, DOWNHILL, OLYMPIC DREAMS
It’s Valentine’s Day on Friday and President’s Day on Monday, which means that this weekend is going to be absolutely nuts in terms of getting four new wide releases.  Last week’s Birds of Prey did not do even remotely close to where I predicted/projected – almost half!! -- and here I thought all those raves reviews might help, but apparently not. It will still make money with its global release but it’s gonna fall short even of last year’s Shazam! and many have already started questioning whether an R-rating is the way to go with a movie semi-targeted towards younger women. (Warner Bros. has already sent out a mandate to theaters to change the title of the movie to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. I cannot believe that it took this long for them to figure out what a terrible title they had previously!)
Tumblr media
With the four-day weekend, it’s very likely that Paramount Pictures’ SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, will prevail, as it brings the beloved SEGA video game character to the big screen with James Marsdenand Jim Carrey, the latter starring in one of his first big-screen appearances in a while. It should be an easy victor this weekend in a market that could desperately use another strong family film.
For those unfamiliar with SEGA’s flagship video game “mascot,” Sonic has appeared in all sorts of other media including animated series and comic books, so one can say that the character is almost but not quite as well known and popular as Nintendo’s Pokemon, which has had a much wider reach in terms of both games and cartoons.
Of course, it’s impossible not to look at Sonic the Hedgehog and completely ignore the relative success of last year’s Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, which had the added benefits of a popular A-list star in Ryan Reynoldsand a summer release. That opened with $54.4 million and made $144 million domestic and $429.7 million worldwide.
On the other hand, Sonic does have Jim Carrey, who hasn’t been in an American wide release since the 2014 sequel Dumb and Dumber To, which only made about $156 million worldwide. At one point, Carrey was one of the biggest box office stars with multiple $240 million plus domestic blockbusters. Maybe the kids won’t be as invested in Carrey’s Mr. Robotnik, but many parents who grew up with Carrey’s comedies will be happy to see him in such a perfect role.
The Presidents Day weekend allows one extra day for parents with kids needing something to do with them sans school. Even so, the biggest movies on the weekend have been superhero movies, including Black Panther, Deadpool and Fifty Shades of Grey, the latter two definitely not for kids. (Daredeviland Ghost Rider also fared well on the weekend.) In fifth place for the weekend is Warner Bros’ The LEGO Movie, which made $62.5 million over the four-day weekend, but that was in its SECOND WEEKEND! So yeah, lots of money to be had for a family movie even though the biggest opener was Christopher Columbus’ Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (now on Broadway!), which opened with $38.7 million ten years ago.
I have to imagine that Sonic is more popular, and even with the tragic misstep of that first trailer last year which got such a negative reaction to Sonic’s appearance, Paramount delayed the movie and went back to the CG drawing board, there will be enough fans interested to see how he translates to the screen that $40 million over the weekend should be doable even with three other wide releases. I also don’t think reviews will be so bad, so it should be good for $100 million plus.
Mini-Review: For whatever reason, Sonic the Hedgehog is the kind of movie that lazy critics love to dump on, maybe because it’s a kids’ movie or because it’s a movie based on a video game they played as kids, or more likely, a character their kids know from popular cartoons and comic books. It doesn’t help that judgments were mostly cast when the first trailer hit last year and Sonic looked different than what people expected. Regardless, I went into the movie with very low expectations, maybe because I really had no passionate connection to the character despite being generally familiar with some of the games.
We meet Sonic as he’s being chased by robots, and we flash back to him as a kid on a planet where he’s able to zoom around freely, until he’s discovered by predators that are hunting him (it’s never explained why), so his mentor owl gives Sonic gold rings that can take him off-planet. Sonic ends up in a small town called Green Hills where he watches the townsfolk in hiding for years, including a local police officer (James Marsden) and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter). The former eventually discovers Sonic after he causes a major power outage that gets the attention of the government and its genius robotics scientist, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).
Despite not having much previous connection to Sonic, it’s hard for me not to appreciate this character, because I’ve been known to zip around myself. I also enjoyed Sonic’s haste since who knows when we might see that movie based on one of my favorite comic characters, The Flash. Sonic does a good job capturing the intensity and yes, speed, of having speed powers in quite a masterful way compared to previous attempts, giving me hope that a Flash movie is possible. (Granted, they do rip-off the fun thing Quicksilver does in the recent X-movies by slowing everything around Sonic down to a halt, but it’s still amusing.)
Probably the most genius idea by Sonic’s filmmakers was to convince Jim Carrey to return to the big screen as Dr. Robotnik. He quickly reminds us how hilarious he can be when going as fully into a character as he does this one, and it’s prime Carey vs. the semi-lazy Carrey that made movies in the early ‘00s. Robotnik is a super-genius with no patience for anyone on a lower level of intellect (aka everyone), and Carrey takes that idea to the utmost extreme. (It’s hard not to compare what he’s doing in this movie to what Ewan McGregor does in Birds of Prey and see how Carey does it effortlessly whereas McGregor was clearly trying too hard.)
That’s not to take away from Marsden and Sumpter, Sonic’s other prominent human co-stars, who bring such a warmth and humanity to those characters that you rarely even think that you’re watching them interact with a fully CG-character. (Kudos to Ben Schwartz and what he brings to Sonic as his voice.)
Sure, the plot can be a bit predictable with certain parts clearly geared to kids, but there’s also slew of pop references that display some real talent in the writing of the movie so that it can be watched and enjoyed by people of all ages.
Is it possible that Sonic the Hedgehog is the first thoroughly entertaining movie of the year? Yes, indeedy. (Definitely stay through the first bunch of credits if you are a Sonic fan!)

One of the more interesting releases of the weekend is BLUMHOUSE’S FANTASY ISLAND (Sony Pictures Releasing), which as you can guess is a PG-13 horror version of the popular ‘80s show, starring Michael Peña as Mr. Rouke, the head of a program in which people can pay lots of money to achieve their greatest wishes… with a catch! Since this is Blumhouse, you probably know that the catch involves some sort of horror/thriller premise, and if you’ve seen the trailer, you might get some idea how it works… or not. (I wish I can say more but I’m under embargo!)
The rest of the cast is decent including Maggie Q (from Mission: Impossible 3), Lucy Hale, Portia Doubleday, Michael Rooker, Ryan Hansen, Jimmy O . Yang and more, plus it’s directed by Jeff Wadlow, who last did Blumhouse’s Truth Or Dare (a very bad movie!) and then Kick Ass 2 before that. (He was supposed to direct Sony’s upcoming Bloodshot movie but he left that to do other things, like this.)
Unfortunately, Sony Pictures Releasing (another specialized imprint from the parent company?) seems to have taken a cue from Screen Gems by deciding not to screen the movie for critics until Thursday afternoon (just like with The Grudge!), plus there won’t be ANY Thursday previews for this. It’s a shame since… well, I can’t really tell you if I liked the movie or not since I’m under embargo until Friday. J
Either way, it seems like a strong enough counter to Sonic and Birds of Prey that it should be good for $15 million plus over the four days. Personally, I think it would have opened even bigger if Sony and Blumhouse had shown some balls and screened it for critics in advance, but what do I know? I’ve only written about this stuff for ALMOST TWENTY FUCKING YEARS! (Not sure I’m gonna review the movie but we’ll see.)
I know far less about Universal’s Valentine’s Day offering THE PHOTOGRAPH (Universal), which I guess is a romantic drama that’s targeting African-Americans looking for something to see on the biggest date nights of the year. In fact, we’ve seen some interesting hits on this weekend just by putting “Date” in the movie title, as was the case with Adam Sandler-Drew Barrymore’s 50 First Dates ($45.1 million four-day opening) and even Date Movie ($21.8 million), which satirized romantic movies. But the real winner has to be a movie that went all out for Valentine’s Day by actually going with the title Valentine’s Day, which helped it open with $63 million over the four-day weekend ten years ago. ($23.4 million of that was on Valentine’s Day alone!)
Since I won’t see The Photograph until Weds. night, I can only talk about the little bit of marketing I’ve seen and what’s out there. Apparently, this is more in the vein of Valentine’s Day in that it’s a series of intertwined romantic stories, but it has an impressive cast of African-American actors who are on the verge of breaking out such as the great LaKeith Stanfield and amazing Kelvin Harrison Jr., as well as Rob Morgan (from “Daredevil” and Mudbound) and Courtney B. Vance. I’d be neglect if I didn’t mention any of the women involved and having Issa Raefrom the TV show “Insecure” as the primary female lead is something that shouldn’t be ignored. Stanfield isn’t the only connection to Jordan Peele, though, asLil Rel Howery from Get Outis also in this movie as is Peele’s actual wife, Chelsea Peretti!
I actually had to double check to make sure Peele wasn’t one of the film’s producers, but no, this is from Will Packer, a producer who is responsible for so many huge hits among African-Americans that one of these days I won’t underestimate his drawing power, even though all three of his 2019 movies underdelivered, including the comedy Little (co-starring Rae), although did well compared to their lower budgets.
In that sense, The Photograph could be compared to Packer’s Screen Gems comedy About Last Night, which opened with $27.8 million in just over 2,200 theaters in 2014, but that also had the power of proven box office draw Kevin Hartto bring in audiences. I certainly don’t want to be accused of underestimating Packer again, but with such a generic title and premise (and next to no marketing?), I’m just not sure the movie will deliver despite being decent counter-programming for AA audiences. With that in mind, I think the movie will probably make somewhere between $12 and 14 million.
Tumblr media
Then there’s DOWNHILL (Searchlight Studios), the new movie from The Way, Way Back directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (who also won the Oscar for cowriting Alexander Payne’s The Descendants), this one being a direct remake of Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund’s 2014 film Force Majeure.
In this version, Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus play a squabbling couple who travel to the alps with their kids, but after barely escaping an avalanche – one in which he runs away leaving his family behind – they start questioning their lives. The film also stars Zach Woods (also from “Veep”), Miranda Otto and Zoe Chao, and though it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival (just like the duo’s previous movie), it did not receive great reviews, as it currently sits at 48% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I don’t think that will matter since like Carey above, Ferrell hasn’t been oversaturating the market with movies in the past couple year, maybe because his last movie, Holmes & Watson, reteaming him with John C. Reilly from Step Brothers bombed with $41 million worldwide after horrifying reviews. Fortunately, Louis-Dreyfus is far more loved thanks to her run on “Seinfeld” and her Emmy-winning run on HBO’s “Veep,” and that should help get people into theaters despite all the competition aboe and below.
Searchlight (no more Fox!!) will be releasing the movie into roughly 1,500 theaters, a moderate release to see how it fares, and the extended holiday weekend (plus the chance of it attracting older moviegoers on Valentine’s Day) should help it make $5 million plus over the extended weekend.
Mini-Review: If you’re reading this review hoping for a play-by-play of how Downhill differs from Ruben Ostlund’s Force Majeure, then you’re bound to be disappointed, because a.) I don’t really remember it, b.) I wasn’t as big a fan of the movie as so many others, and c.) I’m going to assume that a lot of people never got around to seeing it.
In this version, it’s Ferrell and Louis-Dreyfus as Peter and Billie Stanton, and there’s much more focus on their roles as parents and the responsibility that goes with that. Once again, Peter runs off when a controlled avalanche comes their way, but they don’t really talk about it so much even as it hangs over their heads.
Nat Faxon and Jim Rash once again find a manageable way of making “dramedy” out of a situation, making sure not to go for constant visual laughs or the zaniness Ferrell usually goes for. (Granted, we can totally believe him as a careless father/husband who does dumb things.) In fact, Ferrell plays his role fairly toned down, which allows Louis-Dreyfus to shine in what’s, oddly, a quite rare movie appearance. How they deal with the aftermath of the avalanche comes to a head when Pete’s work-buddy Zack (Zach Woods) arrives with a ladyfriend (Zoe Chao) allows the two to go at each other. It doesn’t get quite as intense as Marriage Story, but it’s obvious that they both have reached the point in their marriage where they need a separation.
It is kind of amusing that Miranda Otto almost steals her scenes with the two leads because she’s so funny as a hot-to-trot European guest they keep running into and who sets Billie up with a hot Italian ski trainer. There’s a few other funny characters but it mostly stays on Ferrell and Louis-Dreyfus either alone or together, and that’ll be enough for most people.
Faxon and Rash find interesting ways to play with the basic premise, although Downhill is very much comedy with a lower-case “c,” and like the original movie, it should lead to some interesting conversations.
Rating: 7/10
This week’s Top 10 should look something like this… (bearing in mind that the below are all four-day projections). It’ll be interesting to see if the name change for “Birds of Prey” will make a difference, but look for NEON’s Parasite to make its first foray into the top 10 this weekend after 19 (!!!) weeks in theaters, thanks to its Best Picture win last Sunday.
1. Sonic the Hedgehog (Paramount) - $44 million N/A (up $1.5 million)* 2. Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey  (Warner Bros) - $20 million -39% (down $1.5 million)* 3. Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island (Sony) - $15.8 million N/A (up $.3 million)* 4. The Photograph (Universal) - $13.5 million N/A 5. Bad Boys for Life (Sony) - $8 million -35% (up .2 million)* 6. 1917 (Universal) - $7 million -23% 7. Downhill (Searchlight) - $5.6 million N/A (up .2 million)* 8. Parasite (NEON) - $5 million +300% (up .4 million and one place) 9. Dolittle  (Universal) - $4.5 million -30% (down .4 million and one place) 10. Jumanji: The Next Level  (Sony) - $4.2 million -24%
*UPDATE: A few minor updates based on actual theater counts with Parasite being expanded into 2,000 theaters, the widest its been so far. I feel like most of the new movies will do well, including Downhill (which will be in 2,301 theaters vs. the 1,500 estimated earlier in the week). Anyway, it should be a fairly hearty and robust weekend at the box office.
LIMITED RELEASES
Before we get to the regular limited releases opening Friday, I want to mention two special releases for Weds. night, Trafalgar Releasing is giving a one-night screening of The Doors: Break on Thru - A Celebration of Ray Manzarek, which I haven’t seen but I’m definitely interested in as a fan of the ‘60s group (and Manzarek’s keyboard work). You can get tickets for that here. Also, Kino Lorber is giving one-night release of Emily Taguchi & Jake Lefferman’s doc After Parkland to commemorate the second anniversary of the shootings at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that killed 17 people and began a nationwide student movement for gun control. It’s a fairly sobering and emotional doc, as you can imagine, especially since so little has been done to prevent incidents like this even two years later.
Tumblr media
My favorite movie of the weekend is Jeremy Teicher’s OLYMPIC DREAMS ( IFC Films), opening at the IFC Center Friday. It stars Nick Kroll (who you’ll know from “The League,” “Oh, Hello” and other things) and (actual Olympian distance runner) Alexi Pappas, who you may or may not be as familiar with. Pappas plays Penelope, an American competitor in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, who is feeling lonely and unable to connect with others until she meets Kroll’s volunteer dentist, Ezra. While at first, it wouldn’t seem like they would have anything in common, they spend a night hanging out and while some might be expecting something romantic, since this is opening on Valentine’s Day, well I won’t ruin what does or doesn’t happen, k?  Either way, it’s a wonderful film co-written by Teichter, Pappas and Kroll, and if that sounds like a familiar formula, then it is indeed the one Richard Linklater used for his sequels to Before Sunrise with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Olympic Dreams isn’t nearly as deep and philosophical (or wordy), but the two actors are so wonderful together, and they actually filmed this in the Athletes Village at the Olympics (the first film to do so) which adds some authenticity to the sweet little movie. (There will be a sneak preview Weds night at the IFC Center with Teicher, Kroll and Pappas all in attendance!)
Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig returns with THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS (Vertical), a star-studded ensemble piece starring Zoe Kazan, Andrea Riseborough, Caleb Landry Jones, Jay Baruchel and Bill Nighy (who appeared in Lone’s previous film Their Finest). This is a New York City story about six strangers whose lives intersect and mingle while trying to find help, hope and love. I know it sounds like the Crash-style movie we’ve seen far too many times before, but I have faith in Ms. Scherfig and hopefully I’ll have a chance to watch it in the next day or two.
I also still haven’t gotten around to watching Kenji Tanagaki’s action-comedy ENTER THE FAT DRAGON (Go WELL USA), starring the always-amazing Donnie Yen as police officer Zhu, who is sent to Japan on a routine police escort of a suspect… who mysteriously dies, forcing Zhu to call upon a former undercover inspector to help solve the murder. I’m assuming the latter is the “Fat Dragon” and Yen didn’t gain 200 lbs. for the part.
Opening at the Quad Cinemaon Friday and in L.A. on Feb. 21 is Dimitri de Clercq’sFrench/Belgian film You Go to My Head (First Run Features) about an architect who finds a young woman lost, alone and in a fog in the Sahara after a mysterious accident, but when he takes her to the hospital, he claims to be her husband. As she gets better, he creates an elaborate life to fill in the life they shared which she can no longer remember. It also sounds perfect for Valentine’s Day, so you have plenty of options!
I didn’t have too much to say about Céline Sciamma’s PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE (NEON), because I think I wrote about it last year, and I haven’t seen the movie since the New York Film Festival. Set in the 18thCentury, it’s about a woman painter who travels to a remote island where she’s commissioned to do a painting of a grieving widow, who she ends up falling in love with. I probably should see the movie again as it didn’t really connect with me the first time, but I can totally understand why others love it so much. (Unfortunately, the 7:10 screening on Friday night at the Angelika with a QnA moderated by my pal, Valerie Complex, is already sold out!)
The second documentary in the last year about a man named “Cunningham” (a different one this time) is Mark Bozek’s The Times of Bill Cunningham (Greenwich) about the famed photographer who died in 2016… and whom I know even less about than I did dancer/choreographer Merce Cunningham. Apparently, he was a New York Timesphotographer for four decades and had a long relationship with First Lady Jackie Kennedy, and this doc is even narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker! It also opens at the Angelika and City Cinemas 1, 2 & 3, and maybe L.A.?
Due to the usual conflicts and circumstances, I wasn’t able to see Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn’s Ordinary Love (Bleecker Street) as planned, but it’s an appropriately-timed romantic drama starring Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville as a middle-aged couple who must deal with her beast cancer diagnosis. I actually am interested in seeing this, especially to see Neeson back in serious drama mode (it’s been a while), so hopefully I’ll have a chance to see this down the road.
Also opening Friday is Tanya Wexler’s Buffaloed (Magnolia), starring Zoey Deutch as Peg Dahl, a young woman living in Buffalo, the debt collection capital of America but hopes to get out of town and into an Ivy League university. When she’s accepted to her top choice but can’t afford the tuition, she gets pulled into the rope of debt collection.  Also starring Judy Greer, Germaine Fowler, Noah Reid and Jai Courtney, it will open at New York’s Quad Cinema, the Loz Feliz 3 in L.A., Buffalo’s North Park Theater and more theaters.
Another SXSW 2019 movie is Richard Wong’s Come As You Are (Samuel Goldwyn), starring Gabourey Sidibe, Grant Rosenmeyer, Ravi Patel, Hayden Szeto and Janeane Garofolo. The three guys in the middle play men with disabilities who go on a road trip to a Montreal brothel to get away from their suffocating parents. Sidibe (from Precious) plays their travelling nurse who drives them across the border to help them lose their virginity. This is an English remake of the Belgian Film Hasta La Vista about the real-life adventure of Asta Philpot.
Sara Zandieh’s indie rom-com A Simple Wedding (Blue Fox Entertainment) also opens in theaters and On Demand on Valentine’s Day, this one following an Iranian-American named Nousha (Tara Grammy) whose hopes for a Persian wedding are dashed when she falls for a bisexual artist/DJ named Alex (Christopher O’Shea). She has to make sure her parents don’t realize they’re living together before marriage. The film also stars Shohreh Aghdashloo, Rita Wilson, Maz Jobrani, Peter McKenzie and James Eckhouse.
LOCAL FESTIVALS
Some cool festivals and series in New York are happening this weekend to offer competition for all the choices above.
Let’s begin with the “Winter Showcase” for one of my favorite annual film festivals, the New York Asian Film Festivalsubtitled “Love at First Bite,” since they’re including a special Valentine’s Day screening of the Korean hit Extreme Job followed by a reception including delicious Korean food. The rest of the line-up is probably more appropriate for the rep section as it will including Asian classics like Stephen Chow’s God of Cookery (1996), Ang Lee’s Eat Drink Man Woman (1994),Tampopo (1985) on Saturday, as well as Ritesh Batra’s amazing The Lunchbox and more on Sunday.
Up at Film at Lincoln Center, there’s the annual “Neighboring Scenes,” the annual celebration of “New Latin American Cinema,” opening Friday with Joanna Reposi Garibaldi’s Lemebel, a documentary about writer/visual artist Pedro Lemebel and his controversial performances amidst Chilean upheaval. Of course, I’m most interested in the Brazilian offerings, but sadly, there just isn’t enough time in the day/week to see as many of the films in this series I’m curious about including the New York premiere of Ema from Chile’s Pablo Larrain (Neruda, Jackie). Click on the link above and check out that line-up.
Further North (in terms of global geography) but South (in terms of New York City geography) is this year’s “Canada Now” series, taking place at the IFC Center from Thursday through Sunday. It will kick off with Guest of Honor, the new film from Canada’s Atom Egoyan, starring David Thewlis and Laysla De Oliveira as father and music school teacher daughter whose lives become complicated when she’s put in prison for earlier crimes. There are seven other movies in this series, most of them getting their U.S. debuts, so that’s another alternative for what could be a busy movie-going weekend.
STREAMING AND CABLE
Lots of stuff premiering on streaming services this weekend including the British animated sequel A Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon on Netflix, as well as the rom-com sequel To All the Boys: PS I Still Love You, which will premiere on Weds and may end up being the “Netflix and chill” choice for many young people on V-Day. (I honestly never got around to seeing the first movies of either of those yet!)
Over on Hulu, they’re premiering the gender-swapped series loosely based on Nick Horny’s High Fidelity, this one starring Zoe Kravitz, the daughter of Lisa Bonet, who appeared opposite John Cusack in Stephen Frears’ adaptation of Hornby’s book from 2000 that was one of my favorite movies that year! Wait a second, even though Kravitz plays a character named Rob, just like Cusack, is she meant to be the daughter of Cusack and Bonet’s characters in that movie? That would be intense! (But probably not. I’m sure I’ll check it out.)

Hello! I was curious to know what some of your favorite Mindcrack moments are in all of their years of existing?
Bro. You are in for a motherfucking LIST.
Off the bat, every single Team Canada Prank. I’ve practically memorized the Sky Shrooms and King of the Ladder episodes. That moment when Guude realized Etho was part of the prank and said “We? Who’s we?” and Etho stuttered and fell backwards off the mushrooms to his death was the first moment in my life that I truly felt alive. #TheOfficeIsAGoodShow #RealMenUseTheirRingFinger
Von Swaying Guude’s house changed my whole outlook on Minecraft. How could someone make something so darn ugly and yet so beautiful? It’s the epitome of doing something for the sole purpose of shit starting creating and having fun rather than aiming for perfect and never finishing. Zisteau is a great addition to any video 10/10 educational content
Just about every moment in Guude/Nebris/Pakratt/Arkas’ TerraFirmaCraft Reloaded series. Had to pause videos multiple times to write down quotes and even then I passed up some good ones! I fully intend on rewatching the series from each perspective. Arkas getting slain by bear, Guude and Arkas secretly growing mushrooms and getting high, Pakratt confusing dolomite and diorite, literally everything Arkas does, THE COWS, that last episode of absolute chaos wtf Pakratt
UHC #ForTheKidsSeven with Single Malt scotch’s skyblock base and rampant cheating from every team except Nebris’. I fucking LOVED that near-kill with the anvil, and all the chaos as the border shrank. Four players stuck in a 1x1 column! The arrow volley between SMS and SkyblockJr. Can this happen every UHC?
Speaking of UHC, Etho and BdoubleO’s epic fight in season 11! He was absolutely on the ball with those potions, I was sure he’d die before he could use them all. And Etho’s fight with Guude right before that was hilarious! Guude high as fuck on percocets and Etho like completely confused at what Guude was doing. The original UHC skybase by Zisteau #I’mALavaExpert and Anderz reaction to the skybase, and then to Guude’s dogs
The whole portal thing in season 3 with Pause, Kurt, and Beef too! That has remained one of my favourite UHC moments since I saw it, there is nothing more classic. Every single season I hope someone will make a portal for no reason and end up in someone else’s base with them. #TheWolfTheWolfAmazing!
Zisteau’s E-Pranker Montage. I legitimately cry every time I watch it, particularly during 0.5 (the fourth prank) when he rebuilds Bdubs’ first house from his Building With BdoubleO series. Bdubs’ moment of realization hits me like a train even though I know it’s coming. Like, if someone built my first Minecraft base to prank me I think I would die on impact, but like in a good way.
And back to UHC! Season 14 episode 5. HOOOOOOLY FUCK! 2spooky4me should have totally been a UHC team! Remember when Zisteau played UHC? It just isn’t UHC without him to be honest. And besides the #BadYouTubers and #ImALavaExpert moments from Super Hostile and Ninja Turtles, Parkas had a great season as well! Shit, everyone was awesome! Parkas listening in on BTC finding a silverfish, Doc listening in on Ole Yeller right before Zisteau-ing himself and swearing, Baj hiding nether wart, every single drunken drink Genny did, Parkas towers “we should smelt some stone to make bricks”, snnnnowballs! :D, HEY JSANO! WHY YOU RUNNING JSANO?, “ooooh, we’re right behind you haha” “BTC, they’re actually here.” Pakratt was slain by generikb, Avidya’s spooky voice echoing around Seth and Anderz “You wouldn’t hurt an old teammate, would you?” “I dunno. It’s been awhile.” Just. God this was a good season.
Season 19 with Vechs and BTC! You’ve heard all the famous quotes, “how did I get stuck with you of all people” “Vechs, Vechs. I don’t hate you anymore” “He’s not dying. He’s just mad right now.” “Did it come from your hand, knocking a teammate off the ledge?” “THAT WAS A MOD!” etc etc. I also like MC’s half heart midnight desert dash, although it took a good 10 years of my life from the stress. Oblivious Pakratt running away from his teammates as they yell after him and then wondering why he hasn’t found anyone yet. Seth’s reaction to MC’s diamonds. Coe’s post commentary, again, you know the quotes: “Left. Chicken. Right. Chicken.” “This bucket has wheels!” “Are you gonna put that dirt in a chest?!” etc. Kurt finding Beef “Sharpness Five diamond sword!” and PiMP turning around. F1 and PiMP in general. SwedishZen and Millbee with the melons.
Obligatory mentions: “NOOO YOUR DOGS KILLING ME!!!!”, 2Germans1Hole, Zisteau crafting a clock and finding every excuse to use it during the game so that those 4 gold didn’t go to waste, Rob’s jukebox battles, Anderz fighting spiders when a creeper wanders into his hole, Bdubs’ “real” season 9 ending, Nebris going God-mode “HIT ME ALL YOU LIKE”, Nebris and Pause double kill, Nebris and Pyro double kill with Bdubs watching and cleaning up at half a heart and then Etho cleaning up again and finding the potions B left and Bdubs interrupting his video to do facecam to explain that he’s a nice guy who shares and leaves gifts for others (basically whenever Bdubs does facecam in UHC. Let’s face it, when Bdubs whips out the cam you know you’re in for a good show), Team Uppercats season 10. All of it.
Trouble in Terrorist Town when Pyro and Coe pull a long con on Pause and Guude in like episode 9 during the last round. I had to pause the video to take it all in, I was just in awe. That series is one of my favourites! I always watch from Pause.
In original DvZ when BTC got warned for breaking a cake. Also Pause’s helmet!
Team Canada CTM uhhh forgot which series, but Pause and Beef getting stuck in a hole, Etho dying, placing TNT over their heads, and singing “Pause and Beef, best of friends” while Beef panics.
Etho calling Pause fat as a joke and Pause taking it serious and then Etho going “wait, are you actually fat?’ lmao.
Pause yelling about vacations on episode 37 of the podcast with BdoubleO “STOP TELLING PEOPLE I’M GOING ON VACATION IT’S NOT A VACATION!!!!!!!” and every time he’s yelled about vacations or muted his mic.
Baj reading a question and mid sentence switching to talking about the curry he had last night, and then there’s a pause and the rest of Nancy Drew fucking loses it.
On the podcast, Kurt’s “Wake me up, boys!” That whole episode was a blast!
The whole “sitting or standing?” debate and the guests’ reactions to it.
Doc accidentally killing Notch on the Mindcrack server, and Dinnerbone confused about him not dropping an apple.
Doc’s zombie death loop from season 4 with Anderz saving the day and then promptly dying.
B-Team mafia in survival of the fittest, Etho killing Genny, and B and Etho teaming up afterwards. Also B and Pungence talking excitedly at the end was adorable, you can really tell they’re brothers lol. And Etho drinking out of the outhouse! Bdubs’ comment on that video killed me lol. And Etho forgetting his push-to-talk and failing to team up with Doc.
The whole got-dang B-Team trial.
End of season 3 tour “On a scale from Baj to Anderz” “Arkas, say something about your build.” Arkas: “Hello.”
The original Death Games, when Etho reveals his secret to Nebris particularly, and all the trash talking. Also Millbee, MC, and Nebris coming to kill him and Kurt logging on in the middle of it.
Prop hunt, and all the wiener and erect jokes. “Am I erect?” “I just saw a can spying on me while I was trying to put my wiener in the toilet!”
Pause and Rob getting girlfriends in Orespawn, and Rob naming his after Pause, and Pause murdering his.
Andrea talking about waking up with spiders in her mouth in an old Triple Eh Mondays episode.
Nebris “sensually” feeding Beef a banana (and practically begging to do it to) on the Mindcrack marathon, and Beef completely ruining the mood lol
Zisteau accidentally launching CaptainSparklez back into a lava tree column and “Dude, it’s okay. You can just kill me” after Jordan’s hit him about 40 times.
#ForTheHorse
MC accidentally killing his one and only teammate JSano during UHC season 22
Sevadus and Seth playing blindfolded lego with Chad’s underwear on Sev’s head, lots of swearing, bugs in the lego, “Are you sure it’s the grey lego?”, “I don’t think I like kids anymore” etc
All the Pyro and Baj burns on Quiplash, ie “What’s something that absolutely does not make you think of a penis in any way?” “Baj”
Coe and Pak playing that stupid horse/giraffe volley ball game with the stretchy legs and neck, and Coe doing the silly accent
Bdubs calling Nebris a psychopath in Nebs’ first FTB episode because he jumped a dangerous ledge for 2 (TWO) pieces of glowstone dust
Nebs coming outta nowhere and jumping in Etho’s car when he was about to test his race track
The first few episode of CrackPack and the battle between Etho and BTC, and Beef and Nebris
The first building game with potatoes on sticks, the second accidentally dirty and racist building game with bloody toilet capsules, the third actually dirty building game with a viking hat with a penis inside
God, I could go on forever, but I’ve already spent over an hour and a half on this.

toddler!mark AU
why am i doing this to myself
im like 2000% sure that i won’t be able to finish this without crying and/or fainting
and since im torturing myself, i will be taking you down with me whether you like it or not
LETS START!!!!
he would most definitely be that one kid that every parent adores, and i mean like every parent
so basically you hate him
of course you hate him because who likes to hear “why can’t you be more like mark” every single day
you two go to the same kindergarten
and you straight up ignore him
mark being the people-pleaser he is, gets really confused
because everyone likes him
everyone
so he basically just shyly comes up to you to play with you, while you were alone in a corner playing with dolls
“hi, i’m mark”
and you just look at him like “bro-i-know-you’re-like-the-most-popular-kid-here”
AND LET MET TELL YOU HE GETS EXTREMELY SHY
LIKE BLUSHING GIGGLING TYPE OF SHY
omg i love it when he’s all giggly but not like that’s relevant what so ever
and you are just standing there like “are-you-crazy”
and he USAIN BOLTS OUT OF THE ROOM
you watch him just straight up leave, before shrugging and continue playing with your dolls
he comes back after like five minutes
because he has a genius plan
and he had to write it down with chalk to make it perfect
he even drew it out, because he’s extra like that
so he comes back with a carton of strawberry milk and his legos
“do you want to play with my legos?”
your eyes just sparkle and you start playing with him and his legos
because even though you don’t like him, you are still like four years old and who can say no the legos
so while you two were building houses and stuff he gives you a carton of strawberry milk
“i brought one for you”
with like the cutest smile on his face
“oh sorry, i don’t like strawberry milk”
and his smile just FALLS
like he goes from literal rays of sunshine to gloomy cloud days
you feel horrendous, so you straight up lie to him
“but it’s okay, i can still drink it”
so you take the carton of milk with such velocity that it startles him and you drink it like your life depended on it
mark is concerned, because why the hell would you drink strawberry milk if you don’t even like it
but you give him a huge grin and he starts to smile and be all sunshine again
that’s when your mom came to pick you up
and you’re just sad because it was fun to play with the legos i mean mark
he’s so nice, like an angel descended from heaven
that he just straight up gives you all of his legos
“here take it”
and he gives them to you with a big smile on his face
so you thank him and leave
and mark is so happy because he had a super fun day at kindergarten
even though he got scolded later for giving all of his legos away

‘Friends’ Central Perk couch goes on tour for 25th anniversary
CLOSE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warner Bros. made 30 replicas of the iconic “Friends” Central Perk couch and is placing them at locations around the world, including the Grand Canyon, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the hit comedy’s premiere, on Sept. 22, 1994. (Photo: Warner Bros. TV)
Fans around the world can get comfy with “Friends.”
As part of a flurry of promotions celebrating the 25th anniversary of the NBC hit comedy’s premiere, 30 replicas of the iconic fringed orange couch – seen in the Central Perk coffeehouse and in the show’s original opening credits – are going on tour this month to locations around the world, USA TODAY reveals exclusively.
From the Grand Canyon to the Empire State Building, from Stonehenge to the Eiffel Tower, fabric and waterproof versions of the sofa are being placed at key locations surrounding the Sept. 22 anniversary of the show’s premiere. (See the full list of sites below).  The stunt hearkens back to a similar effort by HBO, which hid six Iron Throne replicas around the world last March to promote that series’ final season.

“If you had told me that we’re going to come up with a show that, 25 years later, one piece off furniture is so iconic you could put it in the Empire State Building and you’d know what it is, It’s beyond surreal,” says co-creator David Crane in an interview.
The history of the orange ‘Friends’ couch
Where did the couch come from? Not a thrift store or swap meet, despite searching for the perfect boho piece by set decorator Greg Grande, who eventually found it combing through the basement storage area at the Warner Bros. studio in Burbank, California. “Literally in the back corner, shoved under another piece, was this sofa with beautiful carved wood,” he recalls.

Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Monica (Courteney Cox) relax on the orange Central Perk couch in a scene from NBC’s “Friends.” (Photo: Warner Bros. TV)
Grande thought it was perfect for Central Perk, for which he took design inspiration from the Insomnia Cafe in West Hollywood. But the first rehearsal for the show’s pilot episode drew criticism: “I remember explicitly, there were network and studio notes because there was a rip in the back of the sofa and it was a little tattered on the arms. I had to redo some of the fringe.” But director James Burrows went to bat for the Central Perk couch as “absolutely believable and real,” Grande says. “The compromise was for me to take a piece of tapestry throw” and cover the biggest rip.
After the series won a pickup and prepared to begin its historic 10-season, 236-episode run, Grande found the same fabric in Europe and reupholstered the sofa. Then he put a piece of plywood under the cushion to keep the actors from sinking into it too deeply.
Eventually, he had a second couch made; the first can still be seen on the Warner Bros. studio tour, as a cultural touchstone for both older and younger fans, who weren’t even born when the show premiered in 1994 but have binged every episode on Netflix. (It’s moving to the new HBO Max service next year).
What’s “amazing” to Crane is “that there are kids who are discovering the show and liking it, that it’s still somehow relevant. That’s the part that’s absolutely surreal.”
Other ‘Friends’ anniversary events
A sampling of other official celebrations
The “Friends” Pop-Up Experience, a memorabilia museum and gift store, will open in New York’s SoHo neighborhood from Sept. 7 to Oct. 6. (Tickets are sold out).
Crane, co-creator Marta Kauffman and executive producer Kevin Bright will reminisce at a Tribeca Television Festival panel in New York on Sept. 13.
Twelve top episodes will be screened at movie theaters across the country Sept. 23, Sept. 28 and Oct. 2.
A Central Perk Lego set is now available in stores and on Lego’s website.
And a collection of “Friends”-inspired home furnishings, including an apothecary coffee table, is available at Pottery Barn stores, although Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) notoriously despised the chain. (Grande says his pitch for a furniture line to Warner Bros. was shot down years ago.)
Build it: Lego offers a ‘Central Perk’ set to celebrate Friends 25th anniversary
See it: Could we be any more excited? ‘Friends’ pop-up exhibit is coming to New York
