I have a theory about this actually!

Okay, so, we've all seen the writing advice of 'just get the first draft done; it's easier to revise than write' and I do think that's mostly true. I just think that people come at it from two different angles, and nobody bothers to give different advice, even tho these are basically opposite problems from each other.

One group writes the first draft for The Vibe. And what they do is basically only voice - they get really distinct characters, settings, snappy dialogue, probably a decent amount of storybuilding. But their stories are either way too short or way too long, usually, and they don't always go in the right order. The second draft of these is just So Much Structure. At this point they might write an outline and move all of the scenes around.

The other group knows exactly what they want to happen. And so they write something that's probably beat for beat how the story should be shaped, with the plot laid out exactly how they want, only changing a few plot holes along the way. But there's only a ghost of thematic elements, not much interiority, and all of the places and people and times have a real placeholder vibe. The second draft is to start differentiating them, giving them motivations and ways of interacting with the world of the story.

But with editors being so much more pressed for time and the writers having their own crunch deadlines, people don't get to the rewrite stage. Or they only have time to get through the first pass of the rewrite, essentially the rough sketch stage. There were always books like this, but I think we're seeing them more, and more from experienced authors.

With TV it's harder to see the same type of problem, because the scenes can be rearranged after they're recorded, and because actors will put a lot of themselves even into very samevoice characters. But, still, we're seeing a lot more of this type of complaint for TV and movies, too, not just books. They're under the same type of timecrunch, even tho the system works really differently; if it were an education or training problem it would probably crop up in ways that didn't look so similar.

This is why I think another type of book that's appearing more and more is one with really well thought out characters and interesting motifs, but the pacing is just wildly off. It meanders. It's way too long in parts and too short in others, and often it just ends abruptly. Or tacks on way too many epilogues. It's not that it's too long overall, but just that your memory of the story and when you try to look at it, the elements don't look the same shape.

Anyway I think these are two sides of the same coin, and caused by the same problem. But there's only so many people who can hire freelance editors for their work.

So... the words you pick, express more than just their meaning? I've noticed more and more in books published a kind of wooden? overly formal tone, a lot of words to impress your SAT tutor.

Particularly in first person the words you pick the way your character speaks and thinks and the words in which they do that, tell us the readers things about them. Are they smart are they good at school, bad at school, not articulate, etc you can tell me a character likes poetry without ever mentioning that they read it by how they express themselves.

and oh btw if you have two characters in dueling narrative, I should get a distinct difference between them, two different people shouldn't be written just the same way, how they talk and think should be different.

What other techniques remedied are in your chronic illness toolbox besides pain medicines?

Great question! Pain medicines aren't actually in my toolbox at all any more. I used to have tramadol prescribed for the bad days but it became less and less effective and the side-effects were not worth the small amount of relief. (And paracetamol, ibuprofen, codeine don't work)

Anyway, other things... Before I jump into the list, though, for context, I have a diagnosis of fibromyalgia and my main issues are chronic pain and fatigue so most of my toolbox focuses on those symptoms...

Things I've found helpful:

Heat packs (I have a couple microwave wheat packs)

A variety of pillows and cushions. Different thicknesses and squishiness so that I can mix and match to prop myself up in bed or make a little nest.

Squishmallows are a vital component of the pillow collection because they're so squishy that you can mold them into exactly what you need. My neck is the major offender so I mold squishmallows to cradle my head and support my neck at the best angle. The cuteness also cheers me up.

Massage tools but be careful not to over-massage

Wet wipes or flannels/wash cloths for days I can't shower (and for all my little spills; I'm a clumsy mfer)

Water bottle (although I'm terrible at drinking water so it's often filled with a cordial drink; I'm more likely to drink a decent amount and actually stay hydrated)

Silicone straws so that I can drink (from cups or cans) without moving if I'm partially laying down

Lip balm and moisturiser lives next to my bed so I can take care of my skin without having to get up if it's a bad day.

I use a lap tray at the moment for writing in bed (photo below on the left; see previous post here) but I'm hoping to get a proper wheelie tray desk thing (photo below on the right).

I have a bunch of easy app games (some of them are just idle clickers) for bed-rot days when I can't really concentrate on anything but I'm not sleeping so it's boring to stare at a wall.

I keep a set of comfy clothes near my bed so I can change without having to go far on a bad day. Changing my clothes after doing a wet wipes wash can make a big difference when I feel like shit.

A bedside hanging pocket tote like this for keeping my journal, books, straws, a simple craft activity, and other little bits and pieces. I spend a lot of time in bed so I need to have a bunch of things stored close-by. You could probably get the same function out of a box or drawer, though.

I've recently started trialling a self-propelled wheelchair so I can get out of the house on high-pain and high-fatigue days. It's not perfect because some days I struggle to self-propel (I'm talking to my doctor soon, though, and hoping I can try a powerchair or at least power-assist) but it's made a massive difference to my mood and how hopeful I'm feeling about the future.

Actions/activities I've found helpful:

I try to make myself get up and move around the house every few hours because I've found my muscles get stiff if I don't. It's also a wee bit of exercise and I don't get enough of that.

If I'm in bed all day, I try to regularly wiggle my feet and do a few leg lifts and stretches to help prevent muscle stiffness. If I can, I do little exercises in bed; I hope I can prevent losing too much muscle mass.

Journalling helps me remember important details and sort out the mess that is my inner thoughts. As well as regular journalling, I write down summaries of my appointments to refer back to later, and little bits of info on whatever I'm currently exploring (e.g. at the moment, it's a lot of notes on mobility aids).

I have a written plan (on paper but also a digital copy) for what to do on bad days. It's basically just a list of little actions I can take to make myself feel a little better or to manage symptoms (e.g. wash my face with a hot flannel, get a wheat pack, change position in bed). It's all fairly obvious stuff but, when I'm in a flare or super fatigued, I somehow completely forget what to do. By having it written down, my partner can remind me too.

I use a notes app (I won't specify which because I don't want to do their advertising for them) to keep digital copies of important info. I don't take my journal everywhere so it means I always have access to things like appointment notes or my bad-day plan. I can also share notes with my partner and family so they have the important info.

I use a digital calendar to keep track of appointments, bills, and tasks I need to do because my memory is not reliable enough these days. I make sure I share deadlines and appointments to my partner's calendar.

And finally, this is probably the most important thing for me: I do something I call Compassionate Aggressive Challenging; I try to challenge rules, standards, and ideals that I'm holding on to but that don't serve my wellbeing. Some are societal expectations like 'you get dressed when you wake up' (why should I? I'm not going anywhere and there's nothing morally wrong with pyjamas). Some are rules I've made up. Things don't need to be put away in certain places. There's no law against being pantsless in your own house. It's ok to eat a combination of "snack foods" instead of a meal you cooked on the stove (as long as you're still getting nutrition, but also some food is better than no food). We put so much pressure on ourselves to live up to standards that often don't serve us, and when we have limited capabilities, it's important to examine them and drop the dumb ones.

What I can add though is another question; Why does the majority of people, including the official writers, think Barbara and Dick are sooo stinking cute together even though that's basically "pseudocest" too?

I mean the modern canon is that Barbara and Dick essentially grew up together. Bruce helped raise them both, considering the amount of time Barbara spent with him. She is a part of the Batfamily. So they are "pseudo siblings" just like Jason and Dick for example. How can antis be like "yeah but it's fine. Oh it's even canon in some stories? yeah that's fine. Yeah no no it's not weird. Also KYS if you ship other batfamily members."

Even if we go by the original canon, Barbara was 7 years older than Dick then if I'm not mistaken. And according to posts I've seen, many antis think anything over a 5 year age difference is pedophilia sooooo. Do you see how stupid this all is?

Hell in the animated version of The Killing Joke, Bruce canonically FUCKED Barbara for no reason other than to just have them do it. And yeah most people didn't really vibe with it but it got MADE dude. It got approved, animated, edited and released without any pushback from the workers/writers involved.  

Like the only real difference I can see is that those ships are straight.

Uhhhh I think 99% of these are things we've already talked about, but I always like an excuse to yap about my boys. Plus I've been wanting to start posting tøp headcanons on here anyway :)

• So first of all, I am 100% a 'Clancybearer childhood friends' truther. Clancy and TB became friends when they were around 6 years old, but were separated when they were 8. Clancy forgot about TB after a while, and it wasn't until he spent a decent amount of time with the Banditos that Clancy actually figured out TB was the friend from his childhood.

• Clancy and TB both seem confident, but neither of them actually think very highly of themselves. They think very highly of each other, though. They both consider each other to be the coolest guy in the world lol

• TB and Clancy try to keep a professional yet friendly relationship with the Banditos. Despite leading a rebellion, neither of them like being treated like authority figures (TB especially hates it. Despite all his efforts to seem like a normal guy, the Banditos can't help but idolise him).

• They both love a good joke/harmless prank. Once Clancy gets comfortable interacting with the Banditos, he and TB become an unstoppable duo of pranksters. Every new Bandito falls for their bs at least once 😔

• TB has great people skills, and Clancy has abysmal people skills. But they're both really good with kids.

• They're both terrible at dealing with their own emotions/trauma/other issues. They want to help with each other's problems, but absolutely refuse to address their own.

• What Clancy and TB have goes beyond the concepts of 'platonic' or 'romantic'. They don't even need to label their relationship tbh, they're just soulmates no matter what the nature of their relationship is. But the Banditos start to assume they're in a romantic relationship, since there's only so much cuddling, kissing, sharing a tent, etc, that they can do before everyone else starts being like 🏳️‍🌈🤨???

Ugh I have sooo many more things I could say about them but these are just some that came to my mind right now :) I'm also purposefully avoiding my ✨angsty✨ Clancybearer headcanons because if I include those, we'll be here forever lmao. But maybe I'll post some of those at some point too >:)

Tangle always tried her best to make it clear Whisper could talk to her about anything, though knew she was just a really guarded person. The lemur has gotten better about boundaries and trying to push the wolf out of her comfort zone. Still, she wouldn't every try to make the other talk about something they don't want to.

"I have no idea, though Blaze's world is all mystical and stuff, right? Who knows what crazy stuff they can do. I mean, even without that crazy super awesome form Blaze has I've seen her do a lot of crazy stuff." Tangle wasn't sure, though it sounded like Blaze's world might have more options. "It couldn't hurt to ask, and I think she's staying with everyone to help get The Restoration back on it's feet." It'd make it easy to get ahold of her at least.

"Oh, we can make it apart of the vacation!" Tangle would suddenly shout. "Sorry, though maybe before when we feel ready to head back we'll spend one week in Sol to check out the sights and see if they have some fancy magic stuff to help you with your voice." It'd be a great chance for them to see another world and find out if they can help Whisper.

"Oh, I wonder what foods they have in Blaze's world. Maybe I can find something spicy to try." Tangle was a bit of a chili head and was always looking for something spicy to try and withstand. The lemur couldn't say there were many just the things that are stupidly spicy. Anything with a decent or even a bit heavy amount of spicy she can handle.

She felt herself leaning into Tangle's arms feeling awful for dumping that on her. It just kind of came out and, now she was hiding her face in her hands feeling ashamed and a little bashful about it. For someone who could break your neck in 17 different ways she could be rather easily embarrassed. But she did feel a little ashamed for feeling that way. When tangle said it didn't make her a coward she shook her head no---but still had her face covered so it just came off as more cute then it did anything else. She hated herself for being this way, but was glad Tangle was there to hold and console her.

Yet Tangle had such a tender way of talking to her, and she made more sense then most. She felt her lean back and finally let her hands drop to her lap. Fidgeting in place she still felt weak and cowardly for not getting it done sooner. But maybe Tangle was right, maybe there were options she hadn't explored before. In truth she hadn't know to much about Blaze and the princess had mostly never spoken to her beyond a hello, or a respectful nod.

She signed wanting to apologize to Tangle, who was always putting up with her crazy life. First with Mimic and the Cutters, then her life with Gun and more then any of that... her being mute was hard on everyone and she knew that. Hell she couldn't even hold a conversation with Rowan without a pad to write on.

She smiled at Tangle's goofiness, and the way she promised to be with her. It wasn't saving the world, it wasn't fighting this was all very personal to her. Yet Tangle always managed to make her smile, and she reached up and touched her heart making the sign for ' i love you' to tangle. Her soft blue eyes visible as Tangle continued to help pull her out of her own little dark place.

Maybe... just maybe, one day soon--- she could finally tell her how much she meant to her.

Who they like better: Sylvain. Without a doubt, Ivanna's favored parent is Sylvain. After all, he lets her get away with things much easier than her papa does, not to mention he spoils her rotten due to the fact he calls her his little princess (it also helps that she looks exactly like Felix).

Who they take after more: Felix. Ivanna is 100% the spitting image of Felix in both looks and in personality.

Personal Headcanon: Ivanna is the next in line for the role of Duke within Fraldarius territory, just like Ideya is the next in line to become the new Margrave within Gautier territory, but Ivanna knows that this means she will eventually have to be without her younger sister and this scares her because she knows Ideya needs her.

Personality: Ideya is a very shy and quiet girl who causes everyone to wonder where she got her personality from (many believe it to be Sylvain's mother). She has a tendency to follow her papa (Felix) around compared to her father (Sylvain) because she often finds his antics too loud for her liking (not in a bad way, she simply had sound sensitivity). Additionally, Ideya is often found hiding behind her older sister, Ivanna, whenever present at large social gatherings.

Special Talents: Much like Sylvain, Ideya is well-trained with a lance and can use the perks of the Crest of Gautier. Though despite being well-trained in the ways of the lance, she has a hard time swinging it without hitting the ground due to the fact she isn't tall enough to properly wield it yet.

Who they like better: Felix. Despite Felix's very aggressive personality, Ideya is extremely close to her papa because his personality completely changes when he's with her — becoming extremely soft-spoken and patient to the point most don't believe it.

Who they take after more: Truthfully, Ideya doesn't take after Sylvain nor Felix, but instead takes after Sylvain's mother, Syvette. This is due to the fact that when Ideya was born, Sylvain and Felix often had to leave her with Sylvain's mother, and this caused her to pick up on many of her grandmother's habits and personality traits.

Personal Headcanon: Due to how large Dimitri is compared to her, Ideya often hides within Dimitri's king robes (along with Ivanna) whenever Felix wants the two of them to prepare for social events, leading for Felix to grow frustrated to the point he makes Sylvain look for the girls with him. This has become a game of sorts in Ideya's mind.
