"why not just make your own website?"

with the announcement of cohost's death and amidst all the other tumultuous shit currently going on with social media as a concept (i am AMAZED twitter has survived this long given the circumstances), one suggestion that i've been hearing a lot is "we should just go back to the good old days of personal websites. let's all just make neocities pages!!"

(this is gonna be a long one sorry)

and like. idk! it's certainly something i've considered, i think it would be a fun thing to have, but it also feels like the equivalent of "capitalism sucks so let's all just run off into the woods and live in a cabin outside of society" to me. like it would be nice, it would be fun, but it doesn't ultimately solve the actual problems that are present with the modern internet, it just evades them. more importantly in my case and many others, it does not really help people who rely on the modern internet and the connections they're able to make there for their income. sure i can make a website and host my art and blog posts there, but who's going to see it? i can't build a consistent audience and make a living off of random passersby who peek at my website once, say "huh, neat!" and MAYBE add it to an RSS feed or whatever if they really like it. there's minimal potential for meeting and impressing new people outside my existing circles if i don't ALSO still have some manner of social media platform to promote the website on.

a lot of the "solutions" i see people proposing for the slow, painful decline of social media as a user experience keep coming back to old-fashioned, more isolated/insular systems. we miss forums, we miss personal webpages, we miss newsletters, etc etc. but like... those things were ideal in the "old web" because the old web was more about sharing hobbies and interests with whoever happened to pass by and check them out, and even just USING the internet was a niche hobby in and of itself for a lot of people. if you wanna be kinda cynical about it (and not unjustifiably so), web 2.0 is much more blatantly business-oriented, and its algorithms and carefully crafted UX's are primarily meant to funnel you towards viewing ads and spending money on products. looking at it that way, it sure does suck and Everything Was Better Before! but the modern web is ALSO more powerful than anything before it for just like. connecting people. spreading information and news. showing your art/music/writing/thoughts/etc to strangers who never knew you existed an hour ago. putting the tools to reach out to someone and tell them you think they're cool right there on the same website where their art is hosted, just a comment or a message away.

if you're able to avoid patterns of engagement-bait and obsessing over follower counts as a measure of self-worth (a big "if", i realize, but i view it like installing an adblocker - it's just kind of a basic prerequisite for modern internet safety and survival), a lot of these systems can genuinely be really positive and life-changing in ways that were simply not possible 20 years ago! almost all of my current closest friends are people I met through sharing our art on platforms like Twitter who were complete strangers at the time. all of the art clients that regularly pay my bills and support my work came from places like that too! the "social" part of "social media" is really what makes it ultimately worth keeping around in any form, and makes the pursuit of a Good social media platform still valuable.

there's a lot to love about the old web - its aesthetics, simplicity and freedom for personal expression - but every time someone says "just delete your socials and make a personal website" i am forced to confront the fact that i could never do what i currently do or be the person i am on the old web. if i was stuck hanging out in my own little space and only ever interacting with people who openly and loudly share my interests, i couldn't support myself with art full-time, i probably would never have met the kind and quiet strangers who are now my best friends and have made me who i am, and i'd just generally get a lot less insight into the vast range of experiences and perspectives that exist outside of my own. my life would be on a fundamentally different trajectory in countless ways without the advent of web 2.0.

and that's not to say "well twitter and facebook and tumblr all suck but you kinda still have to hand it to them" cuz you don't, obviously. they're corporations, and their job is to take the personalities and thoughts and art of the people who use their products and try to scrunch it all into something uninform and marketable that generates profit and pleases their shareholders. but like, you CAN still make a good thing out of them! these websites are tools just as much as geocities or myspace or IRC used to be. and the one thing these newer tools are pretty much all REALLY good at is discoverability. if you're just a hobbyist at the things you wanna share on the internet, then you likely don't have a lot of use for those tools, and perhaps you WOULD genuinely be happier just keeping a personal blog site or hanging out in private groupchats or sticking to specialized federated Mastodon instances or whatever. it just isn't feasible for me, and there are a LOT of people in my same situation. my entire industry of online freelance artists barely existed 20 years ago, and the web culture of that era is largely incompatible with my continued survival in the mid-2020s. i would LOVE to run off and live in the woods in concept, but all my survival skills are adapted for city living and i would just eat the wrong berry and die out there. i want- i NEED people to try and improve the spaces we're in, and support better forms of social media (like what cohost was trying and largely succeeding to do!) instead of just complaining that it all sucks, everything was better when we were kids, and digging ourselves little holes to hide in. much like all the other problems and frustrations and systemic issues of the world we live in, the modern web isn't going to go away if you just ignore it, so we may as well try to make it better for everyone.

anyways tl;dr i probably WILL make a neocities at some point. it could be fun, even if it doesn't help my career stability or whatever. but i do also need ALL THE SOCIAL PLATFORMS I USE FOR MY JOB TO STOP EXPLODING PRETTY PLEASE, and failing that, some actual half-decent alternatives that aren't going to fizzle out in a month would also be great thanks ✌

do you have any tips on writing soft magic systems? I only ever see them talked about when people are comparing it to hard magic systems or criticising it, which is a shame because I love systems where magic is just in the background being unimportant, with implied rules that will never be explained

god I wrote up like eight paragraphs of explanation and I was really working out some cool stuff there and then the app glitched and destroyed it all and I'm so upset

Unfortunately this reduces to a previous problem, which is "figure out how Tolkien did it and then do that."

Middle Earth is laden with magic. Hobbits being good at hiding is magic. There's a random throne in the ruins at the end of Fellowship that lets whoever sits in it see literally the entire world, and that's hella magic. Aragorn radiates One True King magic and occasionally heals people with a touch. Galadriel's mirror lets people see any point in time, past or future. Gandalf knows several spells, but most of the time he's doing less granular stuff by making lights or small fires or going all Servant Of The Secret Fire Wielder Of The Flame Of Anor etc etc. Elves are inherently so magical that the words of their language are never forgotten by anyone who hears them, the laws of physics don't apply to them, their havens are magically pleasant and beautiful, and the planet itself is magical for them - flat for the elves, round for everybody else.

The benefit of a soft magic system is that it produces a feeling in the characters and audience that the world is vast, wonderful and unknowable. It's at its best when it can answer why, but not how.

Why did the old empire of men have a throne that let you see the entire world? That makes sense! It's hugely tactically advantageous! HOW did they get the damn thing? No idea, doesn't matter, they clearly made it work somehow because the throne's right there. Why does Galadriel's mirror give you limited, randomized omniscience? Because while it's a useful tool if you can use it, seeing the future is a dicey and weird game, and the future can change if someone knows it's coming. HOW does riverwater in a birdbath do that? No idea.

Soft magic systems start running into difficulties when the writer needs to decide how it can or can't solve a given situation, which is a very common issue in storytelling, a format almost entirely centered on problems and solutions. For hard magic systems with clear parameters on what is and isn't possible, this is comparatively quite easy. The wizard can't magic this problem away because-

They're out of spell slots :(

They don't know a specific spell that can do that specific thing

There's another caster nearby stopping them

The object that lets them do magic isn't working

They need to speak words/do gestures/use materials to cast, and they can't for whatever reason

There's something "antimagic" around stopping them

Etc etc. The possibilities are easy to run through, because the "how" is clearly defined, and can be negated into a "how NOT." If magic uses spell slots, stop the characters using it by taking those slots away. If magic needs a material focus, break or destroy it. This prevents magic from feeling like an unsatisfying "a wizard did it" fix for all difficulties because the wizards can only do specific things under specific circumstances.

Soft magic systems can contrive answers to this too, but it can be a bit tricky to justify, and if it's Too Convenient it can feel like the magic system really just does what the writer needs it to do. When asked "why can't magic solve this problem?" soft magic systems can answer in several ways:

Too tired, sorry :( magic is Taxing and stuff so the caster can tip over whenever's convenient

They're in a Bad Vibes zone that's hindering their ability to cast because soft magic can be impeded by soft problems like "somebody was very mean here once"

That specific magic is tied to a specific location, like a magical elf forest, and doesn't work outside of it because it's intrinsic to the place and can't be replicated

There's another magical being around and their kung-fu is more powerful

These explanations work, but that's conditional on the story not making the audience think the magic SHOULD work in this situation, and this is entirely based on what's been established in the story thus far. If the wizard has been able to fly up until now, parking the gang at the bottom of the cliff and saying "sorry, fly machine broke" feels contrived. But if we've only ever seen other, intrinsically magical beings fly, the audience is unlikely to expect that the party's humble wizard will suddenly bust out a set of feathery wings as a gift from baby jesus himself. On the writing side, it's really a matter of feeling it out and making sure nothing feels too jarring - if the character who's previously displayed a certain specific space of abilities suddenly does something completely unrelated (like going from clairvoyance to slinging fireballs, or from a healing touch to earthbending) that feels inconsistent AND it teaches the audience that this soft magic system is softer than they realized, and can then make it much harder for the writer to then convince them that this caster CAN'T spontaneously manifest a power or gimmick that'll save them. But if the magical characters or objects operate within a specific space - one character that specializes in fire, one object that specializes in remote viewing, one artifact that lets its holder control the winds - then the audience will expect and accept things that fit in those broad, soft categories without speculating too much on the underlying "how" of their mechanics.

But the temptation to explain "how" is very strong for writers, and soft magic systems especially have trouble with this, because soft magic systems start calcifying into fragmentary hard systems when they're forced to explain "how". It locks in a hard-defined axiom that can be logically extrapolated. Because a soft system is not DESIGNED for that kind of internal logic, doing that will usually cause axiomatic collisions as they contradict one another. If a hard system is a crisp, geometric crystalline structure where any tangent line drawn through it will intersect cleanly with other lines in very predictable ways, adding "how"s to a soft magic system is like drawing tangent lines through a bowl of pudding - you're gonna get a lot of intersections in awkward places.

To pull an example out of absolutely nowhere, if a soft system without clear rules establishes something like "this spell can be used to summon an object towards the caster, but it DOES NOT WORK on living things", there are a number of questions that can become relevant:

Who made that spell to have those limitations?

Why can't WE make spells that DON'T have that limitation?

How is the spell defining "living things"? Would it work on a plant or a skeleton or a piercing in someone's body?

Why did you let this character use it on a living thing anyway, joanne?

In a lot of soft systems that try to lock in hard spell parameters, "who made these spells" and "why can't WE make spells" become the first and most obvious axiomatic clash. If magic can be created to do what the caster wants, why and how does that work, and why can't WE do it? This forces the writer to come up with an explanation to solve the clash without letting the protagonists make up whatever spells they want, therefore solving all plot problems forever - sometimes something like "the inventors of spells were intrinsically magical beings, like elves or dragons or whatever, and thus we ordinary scrub mortals can't make new ones." That's a functional explanation, but it reduces to a previous problem again - that this hard-ish magic system was created by someone with access to an unstructured soft system.

In a soft magic system, the only answer to the question "how does this magical thing work" is "because magic." If any other explanation is needed, things rapidly collapse into hard lines and axioms and covering for edge cases. How can elves run on powder snow, shoot targets in the dark and see for hundreds of miles? They're magical. Does that mean they can fly like a balrog or sling fire like gandalf or control weather like saruman maybe can? No, of course not, that's not their kind of magic and we have no reason to expect it from them. They're just magic. Magic means a lot of different things, and in a soft system the audience has to operate based on vibes rather than rules.

This can be difficult to balance. For instance, Star Wars has a soft system in The Force, and if you squint, every single movie and show uses it differently. It's not super disruptive to the audience's immersion because it's never framed like a Hard System with Hard Rules and it almost never pulls something out of COMPLETELY nowhere, but if you look at what it does from movie to movie and then show to show, it expands from "influence the wills of the weak-minded", "seeing the future a little bit" and "force choking" to "general telekinesis" and "limited telepathy" to "FUCKING LIGHTNING FROM THE HANDS MAN" which is a hell of a twist the first time you see it, to some even more buckwild stuff in the two different animated Clone Wars (like Mace Windu fighting an entire droid army Samurai Jack style and using the force to pull every bolt out of one of them at once, or the planet with the living incarnations of the Light and Dark Side) and the explanation never goes further than "The Force is magic, it's in everything, people who are good at The Force can use it to do a buncha stuff." It's not consistent, it doesn't have rules, but the audience accepts that Force users can just kind of do stuff that fits the Vibes of the stuff it's already been shown it can do. And as SOON as they tried to say "The Force is strong in people who have LOTS OF MIDICHLORIANS" everybody hated it, because it gave us a "how" answer to a question nobody wanted to ask and it made this pervasive, wonderous, soft magic system that Surrounds And Binds Us Luminous Beings Are We into "we are space wizards because we contain an above-average number of bugs."

As a chronic worldbuilder myself, I absolutely understand the impulse to explain and overexplain and lock in the Hows and the Whys, but as far as I can figure it, soft magic systems live and die on the writer's ability to restrain themselves from saying "how." The answer is "magic." The rest is just writing the story in such a way that "magic" doesn't become plot-breaking.

capture the flag is always fun. it's a nice way for people to train together while it feels like a game. even though sometimes people get too competitive.

it gives leo the chance to litter the forest with traps, and to test new inventions. of course, he could test them in the bunker or on his friends. but this is the real deal. no one knows where the traps are, how many there are. it's the perfect conditions to test them.

he's made a new batch of them but for some reason none of the traps work.

whenever he goes to check on them, they're all disabled. no one's activated them, or he would have found a fellow camper near one.

and leo is absolutely sure he activated them. they didn't blow up so there's nothing wrong with them.

and yet they're disabled.

rather than trying to capture the flag, he decides to hide in the bushes near one of his traps to see what - or who - is disabling them.

he listens to the sounds of the woods around him and pulls stuff out of his tool bel two mindlessly build little machines.

after a while, he spots movement out of the corner of his eye.

whoever it is moves quietly and gracefully. so definitely not an ares kid, leo concludes.

the person slowly walks over to leo's trap, careful where they put their feet down on the forrest floor.

leo watches as they walk around the trap, examining it. he shifts to get a better look at who it is.

he frowns slightly. he would have expected someone from the hermes cabin. maybe piper because he's spent a lot of time trying to explain his machines to her.

but he didn't expect it to be a daughter of apollo.

to be fair, leo thought the apollo cabin didn't know anything about traps or machines in general. their skills were mostly archery, medicine and music. not traps built by a hephaestus kid.

leo's eyes follow your hand movements as you carefully prod around the trap. surely you wouldn't be able to- and you disabled it.

smiling to yourself, you straighten your back and us your foot to slide the now useless trap aside.

when you turn around, you hear leaves rustle behind you.

instinctively, you knock an arrow on your bow and turn on your heel.

you are met by leo, who is frantically waving his hands in front of his face.

'don't shoot, don't shoot! I come in peace!' he yells.

you lower your bow. 'leo! gods, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you!'

'that's alright.' says leo, lowering his hands. 'I was the one hiding behind you.'

you frown. 'why were you hiding anyway? usually you like to be in the middle of the action.' you say.

'can't help the fact people start fighting over me wherever I go.' says leo, making you chuckle.

'yeah, right, valdez. as if anyone could come near you with the amount of traps you're setting.' you say.

'speaking of which.' says leo, walking over to his trap and picking it up to examine it. 'how did you know where the kill switch was on this?'

you shrug. 'that's a tactical secret I can't reveal.' you say. 'for future capture the flag purposes.'

'or you just got lucky.'

'23 times?'

'yeah, that seems unlikely.'

you smile. 'there's a window in the roof of bunker nine.' you say. 'it's actually a two way mirror. it doesn't let any light through. gives me a perfect view of your workspace, though.'

'so the tactical secret is spying.' says leo.

'can't win if you don't play a little dirty every now and then. plus it's cool to see all the stuff you create.'

you shoulder your bow. 'good luck activating all of the traps again.' you say. 'I need to get back to my cabin.'

you start to walk toward the noise your fellow campers are making, to see if your team is winning and how you can help.

'hey!'

you turn around to see leo is still standing in the clearing with the trap in his hands.

'if you want to, I could show you how to make these? then you will be able to do more than just disable them.' he says.

you smile at him, you've always liked leo.

but you are surprised, you know leo is kind of protective of bunker 9 and usually only Hephaestus kids go inside. it must be a huge deal for someone from another cabin to be invited into the bunker.

and Leo wants you here.

'sure.' you say. 'I'd like that. but first we have to steal your flag.'

'oh no, you won't.' says leo.

with one last smile, you disappear into the woods, leaving leo to reactivate his trap before coming after you.

So I love your stuff and ofc take your time. Im really sorry to inconvenience you with this request but I'm just very stressed.

I recently moved into a new house with my family and we have been slowly moving things in for months. Apparently the landlord left the door unlocked after he came in to make some final repairs and someone broke in and stole some stuff. Nothing huge, some tools, a toaster oven, drill bits. We didn't think they stole anything else and my family didn't see a reason to make a report till I started looking for one of my boxes I moved previously and it was gone. It had all my cross country stuff in it and I know it's not important to anyone else but CC is my LIFE. I've been running for almost 5 years So all my medals, plaques, times, banners, numbers, memorabilia from courses are gone. And I don't know what anyone would want with any of it. None of it was worth any kind of money but all of it means so much to me emotionally. I SUCKED my first year and it took so much effort to EARN everything. I'm scared they are gonna start melting down my metals or try to pawn them. I know it sounds vain and maybe it is but I was so proud of everything I've accomplished in cross country. I had a mental break down for about 30 mins to an hour and idk what to do. CC helped motivate me to recover from my Annorexia and one of those metals I won right after I got out of the hospital. Im 4'10 (I am a senior in highschool) Im already at a disadvantage considering my legs are half the size of everyone else's. I had to work so hard to be where I am now and all my reward for my work it's just gone because someone was bored? Wanted to make some extra cash?

Do you think If/when you have time you could write MHA comforting someone who's going through this? Maybe Shoji or Amajiki? Or whoever you want and think would fit. Im sorry again I know it's vain to want all of it back but it just meant so much to me.

Sorry, I just a bit ago made a post about NPD stigma, but I just saw a video tagged "narc avengers."

That person has a whole account going "healing from narcissistic abuse," "dating after narcissism," "missing the narcissist," "breaking up with a narcissist," "understanding the narcissist"... Instant block.

And this is a whole thing, there's a group of "narc abuse" creators who use the label "narc avengers" and I'm here just... Avengers??? Who the fuck are you to "avenge" anything!? What the fuck kind of word choice is this?

This is why I talked about this shit. They took the term "narcissistic abuse," so now their enemy, the villain of their story, is narcissists. As in, people with NPD, because you can't really separate the terms. And they're not qualified to diagnose anyone, they're just shoving any abuser under this label.

Call it abuse. Call it a toxic relationship. Call them an abuser. Don't describe harmful behavior using a label that belongs to a medical condition.

YOU DON'T GET TO DIAGNOSE SOMEONE FOR HURTING YOU.

Diagnosis is a TOOL meant to improve the life of the person who's being diagnosed. It's a way to figure out the appropriate treatment, accommodations, etc. It's not a label you get to slap onto whoever you feel like. It's not supposed to be a way for you to create scapegoats.

NPD is a disorder, a medical condition. Diagnosis is meant to help that person. You're not helping. Using a term associated with a diagnosis to condemn people is anti-healing and it's ableist.

░ 🍒 Oh boy, his profanity. Usually it goes unnoticed when armin curses, because he has such a soft voice. But when he's standing in between you and the brusque soul he swears very loudly and vulgarly.

I want to put my community on the compendium but we have an application process. Is this okay?

Yes! Just note somewhere in your application that's a requirement. The only thing that is mandatory for the Compendium is that you must be open to new members or have a public-facing/accessible facet. There's no point advertising a community if no one can join it in some way!

I want to put my community on the compendium but I only have x number of members —

Also totally okay! People don't start with large communities. Activity is a must but, whether your server has two or two thousand members, if you're looking for new people to join, I'd love to help you find people.

I want to put my community on the compendium but I worry its too niche?

Okay, and? If your Eorzean Fishing Alliance has four members but you roleplay every second weekend, I still want to know about it.

What resources/communities can I add if I'm not the owner of them?

Mutual consent is extremely important to me, so anything that isn't a large-scale community OR a publicly accessible resource must be endorsed by the owner/admin/moderators in order to be added to the compendium. I operate under the assumption that a resource posted to a public space (tumblr, googledocs, youtube, etc) is open to all. A large-scale community is one with a significant member count or openly advertises itself as being accessible to everyone for whatever purpose it serves. If in doubt, please get in touch with me. I'm happy to contact your community owners for you!

How active does a community need to be?

If you find a community has not been active in about two/three months, send me a message and I'll take a look at it. Communities have ebbs and flows, especially event spaces that may take hiatuses depending on member interest/life events. I'm not strict in my implementation provided a space isn't dead. If a link or anything is broken, absolutely contact me about that.

When Grett told Jake Tom was a spy, he actually DIDN'T instantly believe that. He thought it was a joke. It was only when Tom blew his own cover and said the wrong thing that he realized she was telling the truth.

That is the ONLY incident throughout the season that MIGHT imply Jake as this 'gullible moron'. And even THEN, 'gullible moron' implies he believed that shit right away, when he DIDN'T.

And I'm not using a headcanon. There's TEXT PROOF.

2) He JUST yelled at you and Ellie dragged him away. "You'd think he'd talk to me about it". Yeah. He WOULD.

Innocent civilians, or colonial settlers?

I mean, the justification that those people who were killed, or, I mean, listen, do you think everybody there, for example, children who were there, teenagers, even some young people, young adults, even adults, do you think everyone there realizes the politics of it?

I mean, this would have been, I think, viewed differently if this happened during and targeted, an actual eviction of a Palestinian family or demolishing of their home, and this was a blowback to that, in that moment. I think people would look at that very differently. But to attack people at a concert? I'm sorry, everyday average people don't understand the intricacies and the policies.

I mean, hell, I think whoever decided to host and promote and create a concert, miles from, just a few miles outside the Gaza border, the Israel Gaza border, at the very least, bad taste. At the very most, should probably be sued and lose a lot, pay out families lots of money for a pretty disgusting idea, honestly. But the attendees of the concert? I'm sorry, no, they are innocent parties in this.

They put a concert at the border of an open air prison. Yes, I think it's extremely dumb, stupid, disgusting, horrific for someone to do that. I don't think every attendee of the concert understood exactly that. I mean, people don't, the vast majority of people do not pay attention to these sort of things. I'm sorry. They just don't. And I don't think that their ignorance is a death sentence. I'm sorry, I just don't.

I just don't.

Again, I think the people who set this thing up should pay consequences here in terms of payouts to the family. I don't know, something - eternal shunning from the entire music industry, I don't know. They certainly have blood on their hands, I think. But the innocent people who attended this concert? I'm sorry, no.

Also, going back to the disinformation spreading about all this, there was the disinformation that was spreading, that Elon Musk even tweeted out, that this was some sort of concert for peace, “A music festival for peace. It was attended by peace activists, and it was a pro-Palestinian unity peace festival,” I mean, that all came out. It was all bunk, it was all bullshit.

It's a Brazilian rave, EDM, electronic, whatever, rave party that travels the world, and they do these shows. It was not any sort of festival for peace.

And the reason I'm bringing that up is not to say, “Oh, that makes it okay,” because I just told you exactly what my feelings are, that no one at that concert is deserving of any sort of, whatever your position on holding a concert outside of Gaza is, no one there deserved death. They're all innocent.

But that disinformation, which turned out to be debunked and bullshit, was specifically put out there to basically knock the idea that you should be pro-Palestinian, or sympathize with the Palestinian people.

Because by doing that, that does not mean anything in terms of people who are dead. But what it does do is say, “Oh, look, these people were doing something for the Palestinian people, and this is how they're repaid?”

It’s to delegitimize. It is to delegitimize anyone who'd be pro-Palestinian liberation, or the anti-occupation, or just believing in basic human rights for 2 million people, half of whom are under the age, I believe, of 19. I think the median age is 19 in Gaza.

So the whole framing of it as a pro-Palestinian peace activist, festival for Peace and Unity, it's basically so they could pretend that, “Oh, look, these people were even on their side, and look what they did to them. They're savages and animals.”

That's what that whole thing was about.

It's gross. It's gross.

It’s using people who were killed as political tools, to further ostracize the most downtrodden and poor, in the world basically, in Gaza.

We saw a lot of these reports that it was an unprovoked attack. An unprovoked attack. You can say it was an unjustifiable attack. It was wrong. You could condemn it in whatever way, but unprovoked, that means that it started there, that there was nothing that came before it to lead to it. And that's just wrong.

That's just wrong.

It's basically saying the history of Israel - Palestine began on Saturday, and that's obviously not the case. I mean, before Saturday, before Hamas's disgusting attack on innocent Israeli civilians, what has been the news out of the region for the past couple of years?

It's literally been just time after time, every time there was a story out of Israel, regarding Israel - Palestine, it was Israel, once again kicking Palestinians out of their home, settlers moving into homes, Israeli settlers moving into homes, homes being demolished. That's been all we've been hearing.

And then you'll get some missiles from Hamas, which I'm sure that the Iron Dome intercepts, but when all the news does hit your feed, or your phone, or wherever you get the news, that's what it's been. That's what it's been.

And there has been no call for anything to be done, no call of solidarity to Palestinians, no call on Israel to actually not, just no call on Israel, no call on Israel to pull back or stop what they're doing and actually putting something behind it to show that you mean it.

When something happens to the Palestinian people that's brought upon them by the IDF or the Israel's right wing government, we don't hear anything. We don't hear anything. You hear it from left wing activists and human rights activists, but governments are silent. The media is silent. Other than the very few media outlets that actually just report what's going on, you don't hear anything.

It's been decades since there was an attack anywhere like this from Hamas, or any group in Gaza. And what happens is, what ends up happening. Just like it happens in so many other places across this world. But again, in this case, it happens to the most downtrodden people on Earth. You get the deaths of innocent Palestinian men, women, and children, and then you get the deaths of innocent Israeli citizens and civilians. And this keeps going in a circle.

It goes in a circle.

Goes in a circle.

And the people who pay the most, the biggest price, are the most powerless. And we keep putting our thumbs on the scale every time. We keep saying we want peace in the region. We want to… there's something we need to do. We need to do something, right? But we show a clear bias. We show we're not neutral in this. We show we're not seeking what's best for the Palestinian people, or really the innocent Israeli civilians, either.

No, we back Israel's far right wing government and Netanyahu. We decide our allegiance with them is more important, and then we demonize those who decide to speak up, the people who do actually want the deaths and the killings to stop over there.

Who think the Palestinian people, the 2 million, half of those under the age of 19, who never even knew a time before Hamas, never knew a time when there was even a legitimate movement on talks to actually create a Palestinian state, officially recognized by Israel and Western governments.

Poking around Twilight's house makes Sky wonder if Twilight is doing all right, traveling with them. All the Links are very aware of when another needs help, but that help is only given upon asking, whether it's whoever needs that help asking for it, or whoever notices that the help is needed asking to give it. Twilight doesn't often need help, at least as far as Sky knows.

But Sky has never seen so many adapted things! He knows that Twilight's clothes are a little different, with big button closures rather than laces and a ring for his sash rather than using knots like Sky does. It feels like every other thing inside Twilight's house has been adapted somehow so he can use it with one hand. 

"Twilight!" Wild whines, crouched at one of the cabinets. Sky picks up the sound with his hearing aids and turns, curious. "Your cutting board has nails in it."

"If you don't like it, use your own," Twilight says, rubbing a towel on a wet bowl to dry it. 

"Why does your cutting board have nails in it?" Wild does pull out a familiar slab of marked-up wood, but he puts the new offending item on the counter next to it. Sky can see short nails poking out of the top of the wood, regularly spaced and sharp. 

Twilight nudges Wild out of the way, snatches a peeled onion, and drops it onto the nails. He picks up a large knife and slices the onion in half, letting the nails prevent it from sliding all over. "That's why."

Wild's eyes go wide. "Oh. That's really smart. Sky, are you seeing this?" 

Sky nods and shares a smile with Twilight, both of them amused with Wild's fascination. Twilight heads back for the sink, saying something else, and Wild responds. Sky doesn't catch it, but he isn't too hung up about it.

They just arrived in Ordon, Twilight's hometown, this morning, and everyone else is currently outside, enjoying the tranquil autumnal atmosphere. Sky had taken the opportunity to nap. Wild, he assumes, came inside to start on dinner, and Twilight followed. Sky still feels a little too groggy to go engage with the leaf war he can see through the window, but he's not one to stand around idly either, so he heads to the sink to help wash some dishes. 

He can't find the sponge for a moment, but Twilight points him to the clamp, an upright stick attached tightly to the side of the sink, with the soapy sponge clipped to the top. Sky stares at it for a moment before he realizes that it's how Twilight washes dishes with only the one hand. Sky had never considered that he'd have to do something so routine like washing the dishes differently. 

As Sky works on cleaning the dishes that have been sitting in Twilight's cabinet gathering dust, he catches sight of a few more odd things. Wild starts to hunt through Twilight's drawers, and gets him to explain some of the devices. Sky doesn't catch many of the words, but he does get to watch Twilight demonstrate the jar lid opener with a jar of jam. 

There isn't much to do when Sky finishes the dishes. He leans up against one of the counters and watches Wild and Twilight cook together. Wild is definitely in charge, but they're in sync. Sky has never actually noticed, before now, how many things Twilight does differently. When he whisks eggs in a bowl, he wraps a damp towel around the base of the bowl to keep it in place as he stirs. When he stirs something simmering on the stove, he hooks the pan handle on another clamp to keep it still. He's so comfortable with it that it never looks awkward or difficult, and Sky supposes that it isn't. It's normal. 

Seeing all the ways that Twilight adapts makes Sky wonder if they're making things harder on Twilight than they have to be, without all these tools and things. Watching him open the window to yell at the others to come in, though, Sky realizes that most of the assistive devices here are for cooking or cleaning, things that Twilight doesn't do much out on the road. He resolves to pay attention and see if there's anything they can do to make things easier on Twilight. He's not sure there will be, and he won't do anything without asking first, but now he knows to pay attention. 

The door to the house crashes open, and Sky turns down his hearing aids with a smile to filter out some of Wind and Hyrule's sound-effect-filled storytelling. He does catch Twilight saying something about a fiddle, though. That sounds promising.

You hadn't meant for this to happen honestly. You were in the hackerspace in your usual spot on the couch just patching up some code in the servers on your laptop. Recently Lenni had hacked into your guys' network and left so many backdoors and holes in your servers meaning you were much more susceptible to hacks these days. If you didn't patch this now who knows who could hack you next. You typed away at the keyboard your eyes following line after line of code when Wrench called for you. You were busy, but he said it'd only be a second and that if you didn't hold a very specific wire for him while he searched for his pliers then the thing he was working on would blow up in all of your faces, literally. Josh was busy with a similar task to yours, patching up the network after Lenni got in and removing any potential backdoors she could've left. Sitara was helping Markus with the 3D printer as he got ready to leave for another physical hack across LA. So you reluctantly looked away from your laptop, leaving your unfinished vulnerable servers for just a minute too long.

Sitara shot you a smile as she noticed you walking over to Wrench and you shot her one back. It was nice that even after all these years you still had a good relationship with your older sister. Not a lot of siblings can say that they stay as close as you two have. You look up to Sitara, the way she's so bold in both her art and real life, sometimes you wish you could be like that.

But you're not.

And that thought alone used to bug you so much but Sitara reassured you that you were perfectly fine as you. She's always looked out for you since you two were kids. Being mute and more reserved, it was a lot harder to make friends or to feel useful most days. There was always something bad happening in the world and you felt terrible knowing there was often nothing you could to to help. But after joining Dedsec as 'S1lentz0' with Sitara you've found that there are tons of different people in the world just like you and they're all helpful in their own ways.

Speaking of helpful, you cautiously grabbed the wire that Wrench held. "Good now keep that steady, don't let it touch any other wires or we're all dead...mmm- probably." He ranted as he ducked underneath his workstation in search of his preferred tool. You glanced down at him every so often, cursing in your hands as your hands struggled to stay perfectly steady, though with the amount of energy drinks the whole team downs you're not entirely shocked that you can't help the involuntary motion. "Aha!" Wrench yelled, shooting up only to hit his head on the underside of the table, making the whole thing shake. Your eyes widened as sparks flew momentarily before you grabbed the device to steady it before the wire could react with anything else. "owww," Wrench groaned as he stood up straight, rubbing the back of his head, his mask showing his displeasure. You breathed out a sigh of relief at the lack of any sort of explosion before Wrench took over again, grabbing the wire from your hand delicately as he looked at you. "Your presence is appreciated my dear friend," he put on a fake British accent as he spoke, patting your cheek with the pliers twice before focusing his attention back on the device. You nodded and took that as your cue to leave. Walking back over to your laptop, you huffed down onto the couch with a sigh ready to get back to work.

The sound of beeping caught your attention and you froze, grabbing your laptop you stared at the screen with wide eyes as some stupid animation of a snake firing a gun with its tail played. It shot through your code, 1's and 0's flying everywhere as a mechanical laugh played. The snake slithered into the hole it shot and suddenly the rest of the TVs in your hackerspace were projecting the image of the snake. "What the hell is that?" Marcus questioned making everyone stop to peer at the screens. You cursed in your head as you frantically tried to stop the hack before it could get any worse.

At this point, the damage was already done though. Everyone crowded around the screens as a mechanical voice spoke. "S1lentz0 has left you vulnerable. That quiet idiot can't code to save their miserable life." It spoke, and you jumped reacting as if their words had physically hit you. You just tried to ignore their words as you started to lock them out of your system.

Sitara's jaw clenched as she stared at the screens. "Don't you talk about them like that you worthless pricks." She spat, anger evident in her voice as she crossed her arms. The voice let out the same mechanical laugh from before and Sitara only glared at the sound. "They brought down our encryptions and stole our codes to fix your vulnerable systems and thought we simply wouldn't take notice?" You'd began to sweat slightly as your fingers typed rapidly to shut them down. "Wait, so you're calling them worthless because they hacked you and took down your precious encryptions?" Marcus asked, holding back a laugh at their petty reasoning. "Snakes with cowboy hats? Who's idea was that?" Wrench spoke up, laughing much more boldly than Marcus making Josh roll his eyes at the situation. "I've heard of these guys, they're a newer hacker group called Ouroboros. Their systems are so outdated, I'm not shocked that you got your shit hacked and taken down so quickly," Sitara spoke, still glaring at the screen as she continued. "Don't be mad because my little sibling outsmarted your dumbass encryptions. The only reason you're even here is because some other hacker group weakened our system, not because you're skilled hackers." The mechanical voice tried spitting back but was washed from the screens as you finally kicked them out for good, patching up your network in the process.

With a sigh your head fell into your hands, you felt so bad that you let this happen. "welp, that was stupid," Marcus said before going back over to the printer but Sitara was looking at you. Her eyebrows were furrowed with worry as she saw you with your head in your hands, knowing exactly what you were thinking. Walking over to the couch she crouched down next to you, placing her hand on your knee as she softly called your name. "Y/n," You peeked from your hands to look at her. 'I'm sorry,' you signed, 'I didn't mean to leave us vulnerable.' you frowned, looking back towards your laptop to avoid her eye. Sitara sighed before moving to sit next to you. With a smile she bumped your shoulder and you looked at her again. "Hey, it's not your fault ok? If we're gonna blame anyone here its Lenni. She was the one to leave us vulnerable, you were just trying to fix it." 'Yeah but I got distracted.' "And that's completely ok," she placed her hand on your shoulder and you leaned into the comfort now going into a side hug with her. 'Is it really?' you signed, and she smiled "Yes! It is y/n, nobody's blaming you hun just look around." She was right, everyone had simply went back to their original tasks. It was almost as if you guys hadn't got hacked only a few minutes prior. "Those guys that hacked us are just run of this mill idiots they don't pose any real threat." She said with a playful roll of her eyes and you hesitantly smiled at her wording.

You guess she was right, you'd only hacked them a while ago to steal some parts of their firewall that you thought would be useful in your own. You often do that, stealing multiple different encryptions and putting them all together for one mega-encryption that was damn hard to hack. "Don't beat yourself up over this alright y/n? Trust me, me and Marcus are gonna get them back, right Marcus?" She smiled at the approaching male, "Damn right," Marcus said with a smirk, placing his newly made zap-gun in a holster under his hoodie.

Moving out of the hug you turned and smiled at Marcus. 'Thanks you guys,' You signed and Marcus looked at Sitara for translation, he was trying to learn more ASL for you but it's a lot harder than he thought it'd be. "You're welcome Y/n," She said, eyeing Marcus as she placed a hand on your head and Marcus nodded. You couldn't help but feel better at the interaction. Just having confirmation that they had your back in situations like these was enough to make you beam. You truly loved your team at Dedsec and you wouldn't trade it for the world.

Sometimes I just stop and think about how Liam and Theo both have SO much wrong with them (affectionate). Liam with his IED and Theo with his plethora of issues (I'm sure that you can put names and labels to them better than I can even if they're not ever 'canon' or mentioned in the show and on a separate note, I would love to hear your thoughts on that) and how they're also the two who are best at soothing that side of them, like taming a beast. At least in your fics: Liam being the one who convinces Theo to stay at Scott's house all the time, the one who stops Theo from killing, the one who trusts him the most, the one who bridges the gap between Theo and the rest of the pack. Theo being the only one who can distract Liam when he's in a spiral by talking about history and lacrosse and pack stuff, willing to let Liam fight him and draw blood to let out his anger, being the only one to calm Liam down with just his presence to the point that even the rest of the pack has noticed it. I know that it's obvious that they are anchors (also lovers but you know) and that they have such an important connection but it really says something to me that nobody can get through to them like each other can, not even True Alpha™️ Scott. Sorry about ranting, I don't even know where I was going with this when I started writing, but I just needed to get it out because thinking about it makes me feel all mushy and warm inside. They're just perfect for each other, your honour.

Yes I would agree! 😆 I was perfectly content just reading fanfiction until I watched S6A and S6B with them, and then I was like, goddamnit I have to go write about these two now, because there’s just so much there. And almost six years later I’m still doing it, so clearly there is a lot there, ha.

As for Theo and his issues, I am very unqualified to put actual names or diagnoses on him, but—I think his main drivers are guilt, and alienation, and isolation. The guilt I don’t think (certainly not consciously) kicked in until later, but he was taken from his home when he was nine and turned into an experiment and a killer and a spy. He never had the opportunity to grow up with healthy relationships or with kids his own age, or a family (the isolation). And even if he had, he would have been so different (the alienation). He’s not even human, he’s a supernatural. And he’s not even a normal supernatural, he’s a chimera. There’s nothing about him that isn’t unique, but in a way that was twisted, where he didn’t have any control over what was happening to him. So I think he’d see himself the way the Doctors did: as a tool, to be used by whoever has “claimed” him, and not a full person or member of a pack.

But that’s also why Liam is so good for him: because Liam will get angry about all the things he can’t or won’t, and won’t let him hide or wallow in them. They are pretty damn perfect for each other, your honor.

Your friends are right with that in a lot of cases. It can be rude to ask for someone specifically, since it can feel like you'd prefer to speak to someone else: but in our case we prefer when we specifically are asked for in terms of only ask box things specifically. Ask boxes can be left to sit, so it's less asking us to immediately show up, and it feels more like an "This is in here for when you're around". This isn't the case for everyone, of course, but it makes us feel we can answer questions a little easier! When it's not specified, we just tend to go with whoever's been mentioned as part of the ask's category, which could be a lot...

Two things can be true simultaneously, Anon. In most cases, it's rude to ask for someone specific because it can feel like ignoring the person who's currently there. However, in our case, it's polite to ask for someone specific because it reduces overwhelmedness about trying to figure out who it's for, and can be left to answer whenever the person is about.

As for your question!

In terms of the animal, I like them a lot. They're incredibly intelligent and capable of many things! Their biology is interesting, too, with how their beaks can be shaped, as well as the different kinds of octopi there are in the ocean. Did you know octopi experience sleep cycles like humans do? I think that's really nice. I saw a fun gif of one falling asleep, and sent it to my friend who wasn't aware that cephalopods were capable of getting sleepy. They had a fun reaction.

In terms of octopi in recipes, I do like takoyaki and tako su, but I'm not sure I'd enjoy those for every single meal. You definitely need variety, and can't stick to one food, no matter how much you enjoy it.

For the animal, they're super cool, but also totally creepy. Did you know there's an octopus that climbed out its tank into another fish tank to get extra food when the aquarium people were away? It learned their routines and worked around em! Totally horrifying! They're also using trash in the ocean to build tools now like how humans make tools! And they're able to slip into such small spaces... totally scary. Totally scary, they're REALLY cool but they're basically if you made an alien horror creature and made it real and then threw it in the sea!!

For octopi in recipes, I could have like five plates of takoyaki every single day! It's so tasty! I'd never get tired of it! If I get tired of takoyaki, something's definitely up.

Hmm... for the animal, I'd like if we could understand them more. Octopi are intelligent, and we're intelligent, but there's still a big barrier between communication. Octopi are able to make tools, and plan around our schedules, but we can't really speak with them. It's a little bit sad, and I'd like us to know about what they might be wanting more, and able to show our own appreciation back. As things are, though, they're still in situations where we can't, and that causes a lot of treatment that we wouldn't allow for humans.

I know I find them intelligent and I want to understand them more, but it would be hypocritical of me to say I don't like octopi in terms of recipes. I've had takoyaki and enjoyed it before, and in source I do work at a café for that product... it's hard to know where I'd place octopi for this part of the response, apologies.

Considering the many new things he had learned himself himself some arriving in the Devildom, it only made sense that he ought to be patient and let her talk out her mess of feelings.

"I do care," reiterated the glutton. "You can see whoever you want to see, and I can't really stop you if you want to go out with him, but you deserve to know if he'll be good for you."

She was far more desired than she thought she was, but it was his fault that she didn't know it. He saw now that his patience was both a blessing and a curse.

Rather than let her believe that his drive was a carnal as the lustiest demon, he had done the opposite. She didn't feel wanted at all, despite the way he sat closer to her, the way he touched at her back when they were near one another and the way that he looked at her during those long, boring classes ( which, to him, was all of them. )

He failed often to voice his feelings, so he relied on actions. Only now he had failed to utilize the one things he was good at. It stung to think he had hurt her, but it hurt worse to think that it was too late to fix his mistakes.

If he told her now, would she believe him? Or would she think that he was only saying so to appease her? Beelzebub hoped that she knew him better than that. He didn't stroke egos or tell people what they wanted to hear. He was honest to the point that people saw him as tactless, but he didn't want her to see him the way other demons did.

"You are, I just..." He pressed too hard at her palm, hands snapping away from hers before he did more damage. Instead, he kneaded at his own palm, the skin growing red and raw with irritation.

"I really like you, Kouleia. I've watched people flirt with you, and you've always turned them down. I didn't want you to think all I wanted was that." He was vague, but anyone could guess that he didn't see her as a tool to satisfy himself. "I wanted to be there for you, and to be good to you because you deserve it. I didn't know that being good to you meant I was being awful too."

He hung his head forward in shame. "This is confusing. I don't know how to do any of this stuff, not like Asmo and Mammon do. They're good at reading people and knowing what they want, but I only ever know what I want. I'm sorry if I was hurting your feelings and making you think I didn't want you. I thought it was a good idea to go slow."

Kouleia focused on the feeling of Beel's hands working the muscles in her own. If she wasn't so wound up, she would moan at how great it felt. She held so much tension in her hands, and the fact Beel was kneading away at it, felt ungodly good. This physical touch wasn't abnormal for Beel. He often did touch her, but they felt more platonic than romantic so Kouleia didn't think anything of it. This however, felt different and followed by his words, her eyes shot up to his face. 

He was so perceptive, and the fact he recognized her subtle attempts at manipulation took her so off guard that she swallowed. Biting down the defensive retort, she tried to come up with something that might be a little bit kinder. 

"I," she started, her eyes falling away from his face again as she tried to speak. She could lie, but it was clear Beel knew her so well he would see it. She could react defensively, and reiterate that it was none of his business again, but he would just keep pushing. 

"Don't know," she finished cowardly. She was not good at this, and it was so hard for her to be angry with Beel, because he was just good. He was a good guy, and maybe that was why she acted like a snake, because she wanted Beel to be envious, she wanted him to feel guilty, or regret for not making a move sooner. Kouleia was substantially a worst person than Beel was, and she couldn't help but feel guilty about it. 

"Yes," she answered finally, the word floating in the air as she closed her eyes and opened them again. "I wanted to see if you would have cared if I did go out with him," her words were soft, as she confessed them out loud. 

"I wanted to feel desired by you," she confessed, her voice barely a whisper. "You've never made me feel that way." The words felt foolish as they left her lips, but they held a deep truth. She longed to be more than just a friend to Beel, to feel like a prize he coveted.

Quality time. He is a very good listener and an empath and puts others needs above his own. This makes him a very loyal friend and/or partner, but he does need to be reminded that his needs matter too.

Flat Top is one of his closest friends and someone who will drop his tough exterior to have a heart to heart with him. And Dustin very much appreciates that.
