Those little touches that scream intimacy

Skinship is a thing.

BTS show physical affection with each other, they hold, hug, touch each other in ways that would perhaps raise an eyebrow for some, but within their cultural context are not a sign of ‘more’ than friendly affection and closeness.  Although, I do have to say that BTS do stretch the boundaries on that one too.  Some of the touchy feely is beyond what you would expect it to be among grown male friends in Korea as well.  But they did grow up together, in a sense, and although it’s a little more than usually accepted, it still is not an indication to anything more than a very close friendship.

But JM and JK, they have these moments.  Two types of suspicious moments.

These moments when they pull back on the touching, the almost touching or touching but just... barely. Those moments where you are sitting there and screaming at the screen (in your mind) “fucking touch him already”, which presents as highly suspicious considering how close those two are on the one hand and how tactile they are on the other.  

And then you have these moments where it’s more, it’s suspicious, it’s not something that you would expect between just friends.

So I thought I would put bring together, in one post, some of these moments.

Moments they do something, touch, almost touch, behave in a way that makes you go “this doesn’t look like something ‘just a friend’ would do”, or “heck, those two must be really intimate for this to be happening”.

Heaven and Hell as surveillance states

The Metatron probably IS watching, although it can't be too close by because he's never visible through the windows… But, so what? If Aziraphale wants help, what's to prevent him from just ASKING Crowley for it? If the Metatron was able to perceive anything Aziraphale did or said at a distance, Aziraphale would be unable to eventually plot against him, so the Metatron CAN'T be that perceptive. Turned backs are sufficient to thwart lip reading, lol.

Solid observation. Let's explore it. (I mentioned I'm a privacy wonk, I think. No way am I gonna miss an opportunity to privacy-wonk at all of Tumblr!)

One thing I did while I was pondering The Final Fifteen Minutes was watch it with the sound muted and captions off. I'm not the greatest at connecting facial expressions with emotions (not neurodivergent as far as I know, just kind of clueless, this takes effort and attention for me), so I needed the lack of distraction.

I recommend this. It did help clarify things for me. And, of course, it gives an idea of the level of drama Metatron can see through the bookshop window even if he can't hear or lipread the actual words. Frankly, though, would you put a surveillance miracle (or a simple plant of what Earth humans call a "bug" in the bookshop -- he has plenty of opportunity) past the fucking Metatron? I wouldn't. But I'm not the point. Would Aziraphale think this possible? How would it impact his conduct in the Final Fifteen Minutes?

From the chinwag, Aziraphale learns that the Metatron's been hunting through Heaven's records to figure out that Crowley and Aziraphale are an item. (As I said, chilling. Just the "I've been watching you two" implication must be a real oh-fuck moment for our poor angel.) Exactly how much he knows, we don't know and Aziraphale doesn't know. It could be a lot... and it gives the Metatron a psychological advantage over Aziraphale to leave that question open, let Aziraphale imagine that the Metatron could know anything about them, or even everything.

Now, there's plenty we don't know about how Heavenly surveillance works and how extensive it is, especially on Earth. In s1, Michael rocks up to Gabriel with surveillance photos of Crowley and Aziraphale on a random park bench. But Michael's pretty incompetent with things Earthly -- she barely manages to figure out a matchbox. I wouldn't take those photos as the limit of what Heaven's or Hell's systems can do on Earth.

Saraqael, Heaven's Only Competent Angel, is pretty adept with the Realtime Big Globe, also a surveillance mechanism. She doesn't expand the archangels' view on the sceptred isle past what's needed to detect the miracle plume -- but then, at that point she believes she's shown what they need to know, why bother looking further? So we don't know how deep or detailed that globe's viewport can go! Judging from his actions in s1, Aziraphale barely knows how to make the globe work; he doesn't know either. So as far as he's concerned, it could be capable of any level of realtime surveillance at any place on Earth. Does the Metatron have an accomplice using it to keep an eye on the bookshop? (I actually don't think so -- the Gaiman-Finnemore brain trust tends to be more parsimonious than that -- but Aziraphale has little on which to base a guess. It's possible, to him.)

We do know Aziraphale and Crowley fear the possibilities. Why else would Crowley insist on doing a miracle to shield Jimbriel from recognition, practically first thing after he and Aziraphale reconcile?

We also get a pretty substantial clue that Hell's surveillance systems on Earth can hear words -- if they couldn't, why would Crowley care so much about never being called nice or kind or good? Furfur surveilling the Spider Shit Cell can hear the flies screaming, another hint.

So we know, from all this and from Muriel's full-color meeting-Zoom records, that Heaven is a surveillance state in the Bentham-panopticon, Orwell Nineteen Eighty-Four tradition, and Heaven treats Earth as a surveillance target as well. The surveillance state is even more obvious in Hell; Furfur's a cog in that wheel.

The slight twist away from Bentham and Orwell is that Heaven's surveillance systems don't seem to be monitored 24/7/365 the way Bentham's prison or Oceania's telescreens are. Instead, the Realtime Big Globe gets an occasional pinch-and-zoom, and otherwise surveillance records pile up unheeded in Muriel's office until somebody cares enough to consult them, which isn't often ("once every few hundred years" according to Muriel).

So it's intermittent, unpredictable surveillance, consultable whenever anyone cares enough. And from research on Earth humans (um, I'm going to put a CW for abuse on this post, because a fair chunk of this research involves survivors of domestic and intimate-partner abuse, also those who live in oversurveilled areas or are subject to bossware), we know that under constant or intermittent-unpredictable surveillance, people develop strict internal self-governors for their own conduct -- stricter than their surveillors expect of them, even. They often become anxious, expecting accusation or attack from any corner at any moment. Distressingly often, surveillance all by itself (no additional abuse necessary) causes clinically-significant trauma.

Does this sound like our Ineffables to you? Does to me. (It's also mirrored in Lindsay's treatment of Nina.) They know they can get away with a fair bit, because they build up a track record of doing so -- Heaven is largely indifferent and possible to trick, God is outright oblivious, and both Heaven and Hell seem to operate on a peer-to-peer surveillance model where you only get watched when somebody's trying to rat you out (see: Furfur going after Crowley in 1941). But the consequences of being successfully ratted out are dire -- Falling, in Heaven; whatever happened to Crowley at the end of the Resurrectionist minisode, in Hell.

Again, Aziraphale finds out during the chinwag that the Metatron has taken an interest in him and Crowley, enough to comb through the records. So even if the Metatron can't read lips, even if he hasn't planted a bookshop bug -- given that Heaven's a surveillance state and he knows the Metatron's out there watching and can consult Heaven's surveillance records for additional details afterwards, strict kayfabe will be Aziraphale's likeliest defensive response, and quite reasonably so.

Not least because the Metatron is by no means the typical incompetent Heaven angel. He handles himself on Earth perfectly! He's not omniscient or infallible, but he's only the tiniest bit lacking in clue! If Aziraphale's extra-cautious in the bookshop, knowing that the Metatron's involved in this mess, that's only common sense!

So I'm standing pat on Aziraphale kayfabing his poor little heart out with Crowley, for now. (As always, my metas are subject to revision and reinterpretation! I'm way too Former Litrachoor Scholar to insist on a single set-in-stone interpretation of anything ever.)

There are 19 different fandoms featured in that list (granted, some of them are subsets of the same, like "Agent Carter" to "MCU" and "Tolkien--works and related fandoms" to "Lord of the Rings" AND "The Hobbit-- and that last one is crack anyway, but STILL), so I'm sure there's something for everybody!

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?

I tend to draft in dialogue to begin with, and then I flesh it out with all the rest afterward. But considering this fic is just two people sitting in a room, one of them telling an increasingly over-the-top story, there really wasn't much in the way of stage direction to add. And who needs dialogue tags, when it's pretty obvious when Viktor's the one talking and poor Dr. Miller is mostly just saying, "Oh," a lot, in various tones of voice? So I decided to embrace the dialogue-only format!

3: What’s your favorite line of narration?

Okay, hmm. I was going to say that technically all the narration is also dialogue, but there are definitely some bits that it IS Dr. Miller's reactions that are my favorite, so I'm looking through for anything standing out to me and I think I'm going to go with this:

“So that’s when Luther and Sloane announced they were getting married. That evening. Since the Universe was imploding and all. And—imminent demise and all, that was the nicest day I ever spent with my family. With my brothers at least. We had a bachelor party just drinking and doing terrible karaoke, and…I have never felt so completely loved and accepted as part of the family as I did then. One of the boys. The Best Man, even. But, I mean, everyone was— it was a big old love fest. It totally satisfied Luther’s wanting to throw me that Welcome to the Brotherhood party, but it wasn’t about me, it was about us."

It's just so happy on so many layers that it makes me kind of teary, and it's the fact that we're looking at this scene from Viktor's point of view, specifically, and you realize how much that moment meant to him in so many ways.

5: What part was hardest to write?

I'm not sure at this point, but I know there were a lot of parts of the show I couldn't remember properly, and I was between Netflix subscriptions so I couldn't rewatch, so I was working from transcripts which are based mostly on closed captions so they don't give you the settings, the actions, or even sometimes who's talking. There are a FEW scenes I kind of glossed over-- the part in between attacking Allison and killing Leonard sticks out as not entirely accurate for one thing. And the actual events of the first (second?) apocalypse-- I was very vague there, but at least with that I could use the excuse that it was still the most traumatizing event of Viktor's life and HE probably couldn't look at it very accurately or in detail, either.

15: What did you learn from writing this fic?

That I'm not QUITE as invisible as I think I am, and there WERE some people who remembered me mentioning it in the Elliott's House Discord before I decided to submit it for Masked Author on the basis that no one would remember me! XD

Also and more seriously, it helped me get more of an objective look inside Viktor's head-- ironically enough. Because like I said in the post about him the other day, (and implied in the paragraph before this come to think of it), I've always related to his chronic self-esteem I'm-Nobody-but-I'd-really-like-to-be-Somebody issues, but having to examine his motivations for every little moment of the show helped me separate ME from HIM, and I understand better things HE'D do and feel that I wouldn't.

Once upon a time, a very special child was born in the Jedi Temple. Very special. 

He wasn’t like human children. He wasn’t squishing his eyes closed. He wasn’t surprised and sometimes startled at every new thing he saw, or heard, or felt. No. He wasn’t too cold either. Nope.

As soon as the people who assisted with his birth looked the other way, he jumped off the surface he’d been laying on and landed on the floor. He squeaked. 

What the heck! The floor was smooth and hard and much closer than he thought. 

The people in the room were startled to say the least. There was some rushing about which the new born found very entertaining to say the least. He thought, immediately, that it was a game. He didn’t know why he knew what games were, but he knew them when he saw them and this one was tending toward the spectacular. 

People went to and fro and tried to box him in. A couple of them collided into each other. He didn’t do anything to cause that, but the looks they gave him after that happened, well, he now knew what respect looked and sounded like. That was pretty great. Not powerful but safe, secure. Acknowledged. Pretty great.

A voice spoke to him.  It was soothing and demanding at the same time. Just one word. 

‘Grogu.’

Was that his name? He knew it probably was his name, but he didn’t know why he knew that. That, in itself, seemed pretty strange. How could you know what a name was, but be unsure if the name spoken was yours or not? Someone must have told him. But who?

He supposed with others that knowledge would have been pretty plain. He sensed that hundreds if not thousands could have told him things. He didn’t want to sift through all that data to figure out the problem at hand. That was a lot of effort for something he personally didn’t care very much about in the moment. He still wanted to play the game. 

He was about to dodge to one side or the other when two things happened at once, much to his embarrassment. 

‘Grogu. No.’

Then he found himself floating in the air and landing gently on the surface he had vacated just a few moments earlier. 

That hadn’t just been embarrassing. It was also annoying. How was he supposed to play the game if people blocked him? 

‘Young one, you must show respect to the people that aided in your birth. You will not play games with them.’

‘Eh?’

Grogu thought it was appropriate to try to act confused and just the tiniest bit apologetic. He titled his head and let his ears droop just a little. He sensed that the people nearest to him found this all very endearing. Endearing felt nice. They relaxed a little, caught there breath and thought that he was perhaps the cutest person they had ever seen. He liked all of that. 

‘Too smart is he. Heard all the others, he has. We have much to do and he must be part of it all.’

Hmmm. Another voice. Clear. Demanding. Lilting. Lilting? When did he learn that word? Was it worth finding out? No. It was not. At least not now. Maybe later. 

‘Young one, let the others examine you. We must know that you are well and true. You are precious and must be treated like the balance of the Force rests on you, for it does.’

Grogu thought that was kind of important sounding and that made him feel good. For about a tenth of a second.

‘Told you have I, not the one is he. There is another.’

The second voice sounded put out and annoyed, as if this conversation had occurred many times without a change in the conflict between the two voices. He liked what the first voice had said better.

‘There may be another but he has a role that you do not yet see. He has already learned things that he will not unlearn.’

Huh? Was he precious or not? Grogu liked the idea of being precious. It sounded comforting. Warm. Loved. 

‘So this is the one you have been waiting on. Full of mischief. We will have our hands full with him.’

Grogu looked up at the tall person with the dark, dark skin and coo’d. He wanted them to know that he wasn’t mischievous on purpose. If he found mischief, well, that was only because it was in his path and he could not avoid it. He did not think he should try to avoid his path.

‘Bonded with him early you have. Good that is. In your care he will be until another is found.’

‘I will do my best.’

Grogu looked up at the tall man and smiled. He would do his best as well. He would take his training very seriously and focus on how to make sure that the mischief on his path was properly identified, categorized, and controlled. Not for his own sake, but the sake of his new friend. It was clear to Grogu that his new friend didn’t have a lot of experience with it. He wondered why and then decided it didn’t matter. They were both new to this and would just have to take it one day at a time. Easy peasy. Right?

Snowwest

This is pretty much my only Caitlin ship besides Snowstorm, and also one of my only consistent fanon ships (in other words, one that I always like and don't just need the right set of circumstances to get on board with). I love the crumbs of their friendship that we got in canon, and I wish we'd gotten more of them!! 😭

E-1 Killersnow

I'm mostly neutral on them, and that's probably because I have such mixed feelings about them due to their canon development. Before Frost showed up, the foreshadowing of her emergence indicated that Caitlin had a tendency to repress her emotions, and that she had an edgier side that she didn't always let show. So when Frost did show up, I was prepared for her to be an extension of Caitlin that Caitlin had to learn to come to terms with, and eventually she'd become a balanced version of both sides. Then I saw a gifset someone made with the caption that they were girlfriends, and I thought that was an interesting take, because that would make Frost a whole separate individual who just happens to share Caitlin's body, and the idea of them navigating dating under those circumstances would be very interesting. And then, of course, canon decided to turn them into sisters, which I can also see the appeal of, but the whiplash that retcon gave me makes me reluctant to refer to them as such. Tbh I still see season 3 Killer Frost as Caitlin, and I see later-seasons Frost as a completely different character, and seasons 4-5 Frost goes back and forth, so it makes for very inconsistent feelings about them. And of course, I headcanon Frost as aroace and Very Much Not Into Anyone, so I'm not super invested in any ships involving her.

E-2 Killersnow

Earth-2 Killer Frost is much more clearly depicted as Caitlin Gone Evil, and season 2 had a fuzzier, less developed concept of doppelgängers than season 3 and onward, so to me it just kind of seems like shipping Caitlin with herself, just with a different life?? Idk if that makes sense. I do enjoy the one-sided aspect of them, though. Killer Frost was definitely feeling some type of way about Caitlin.

Westhallen

BINGO! These guys are mixed feelings city. I can't really see them working out, but there are aspects of it that have potential. Like, I feel like any couple combination of them could work out (in an alternate timeline) with the other as their bestie third wheel, but given the love triangle in canon, I feel like they'd just be constantly at each other's throats if they tried to all be a thing together. It may be the Dan, Vanessa, and Olivia threesome storyline in Gossip Girl shaping my view of this, since they had a very similar trio dynamic. Also the fact that I've never read any fic for them, so all I have is their canon dynamic to base my feelings on. That said, props to the Westhallen fandom for their use of that "there's three people in this relationship" line. My hat's off to ya. 🎩

Olivarry

I may be alone in this, but I've just never seen Barry and Oliver as being that close. They have some good moments here and there, but it seems like the majority of their relationship is just clashing over crime-fighting styles. I just don't really get it. Of course, the erasure of Cisco as Barry's best friend among the Olivarry fandom doesn't help my enthusiasm level any. On that note, I actually enjoy Olivibe's interactions more than Olivarry's, and I'm waiting for the day someone decides to do something with that.

Also, for the record: It was SO tempting to make the prompt list mostly weird color words. Let’s be glad I held it down to just 2. 😅

You Sparklers might guess that I'm not thrilled with my posting time today. 🙃

We did make a little impromptu trip to the store that set my timetable back, but I can't blame it solely on that. In large part I just had trouble getting the lead out and starting on the mandala today, for reasons I can't even pinpoint. Fortunately, since today's word is really just about a color/gemstone, I didn't have to worry quite as much about highly specific imagery as I have with the last few.

That said, you can see I couldn't quite help myself and I did have to get some literal emerald-cut (or my closest approximation the the shape in this style) emeralds in there. And if I'd had the patience for all those straight, close-knit symmetrical lines, I might have incorporated more, but I don't have a ton of patience for that at the best of times and my late start certainly didn't help in that department. 🫠

Outside of those, I mostly just went with the flow and what felt right. It wasn't super intentional, but there did end up being some pretty hefty art nouveau/art deco jewelry inspiration in there, but that kind of figures since I spend a lot of time looking at that kind of jewelry on Pinterest, the same place I get a lot of my mandala motif inspiration. The two are unintentionally linked in my brain, think.

And, y'know, most people associated emeralds with jewelry.

There's also some highly unintentional stained glass inspiration going on here; I did notice it happening and I did try to hold back just a little because I've got at least one if not two other days coming up where "glass" will need be a key element, but obviously I didn't go out of my way to completely avoid it either. If I hadn't going such a late start, maybe I would have tried to lean more into the jewelry aspect and further away from the glass effect, but since I did feel short on time, had no better ideas that were coming to me easily, and I do like the look, I left well enough alone.

The color scheme was kind of a no-brainer here: Green, duh, then some silver and gold to accept the jewelry aspect. And I opted for just a tiny bit of pale pink for those "pearls." Since I opted to go with white lines, I thought they'd look better with a bit of color and pink compliments green, so I went with that and didn't question it otherwise too much. The white lines were also a very conscious decision. Black lines might have actually been the better way to go for the literal emeralds, but I feel like I'm been using the black lines more than I'd really like to, so I forced a break. Besides, I do think it makes the darker greens in the background pop more, which is nice.

That is the big plus about this one not needing as-specific of imagery—I think that's pretty much everything I wanted to cover, because once I did finally get started, the making-of process really wasn't that bad! 😃

Oh, I will note, as I did in the short caption: This is one of just 2 weird color words I let onto the prompt list, but it was oh-so-tempting to go digging and make the list mostly or even all weird color words. 😆 But I restrained myself because that would really be better suited to a November/Huevember list, not an October/Inktober one. [So then, perhaps I'll revisit that idea some other time, but I make no promises!]

And for what it's worth, I did specifically pick the 2 color words of the...I think 4? I had jotted down as options that could be applied to a little more than just the color itself, so if anyone else was following along and didn't want to use color at all, they'd have options.

So I will leave you Sparklers to both applaud my restraint in that regard but also shake your head at my time management while I get a move on cross-posting. I've been pairing the Instagram posts with what feels like an appropriate song for each word/piece and I genuinely have no clue what to pick for today, so that's definitely going to slow me down a bit. 😅 Wish me luck!

ENTRY 7

BYOD (Bring Your Own Best Friend)

Last week one of my close friends asked me to join her for a Pilates class. I originally was going to turn her down because I was rushing to finish up my assignments, but I figured since I hadn’t seen her in a while (literally just 2 weeks) I’d just go for it. We’ve decided to first attend the Pilates class, eat lunch then finish up our assignments together. Pilates was lowkey kind of fun, but I found it a little bit difficult. Both of us were trying to hold in our laugh because our legs were shaking so badly when we had to stretch it out. This also made me realize that I should definitely exercise more because tell me why I felt so weak after that session… We weren’t that hungry, so we decided to ditch lunch and went to a café nearby to start working on our assignments. We procrastinated for quite some time before beginning, which prompted me on why I chose to write on this topic. No, this is not about my procrastination issue. It’s about my close friend that I’ve known for more than a decade.  

We saw a TikTok on how this group of friends grew up together and suggested that we look up our old YouTube channel to recreate it. So, I did, not only did we find our old YouTube channel but we also found our old Musical.ly account where we used to post videos together. We came across this post, and although the caption sounded cringy, but it made us realize how far we’ve come. We always talked about how long we’ve been friends, but it never really hit us until now. I would say back then we were friends because of forced proximity and also cause you know, as kids befriending someone is very easy since all we do is play but now we are friends because we genuinely enjoy each other’s company.

Me and Yong Qi alongside two of my other close friends have known each other since we were in kindergarten, so like when we were 4? We’ve known each other for almost 16 years, I have practically known them longer than my own sister. Putting them aside, today’s journal entry is about me and Yong Qi. Ever since I was young, I always felt that I was closer to Yong Qi compared to the others, not to say I’m not close to others but we just hung out more. I remember during primary 3’s year-end holiday, I went to her house every day to play. I don’t even know what is there to play, but we hung out every day. It was probably then that we created our YouTube channel. Looking back, we posted so many embarrassing things, but I guess it’s worth keeping the memories.

As we were talking about this topic, she told me that at some point during primary school she was convinced I didn’t want to be her friend anymore because I had new friends from my class, and to be honest I’m pretty sure I felt the same way. After primary school, we had to part ways with each other because we were enrolled in different secondary schools. During those few years, we sort of lost contact with each other. The only time we saw each other was when our family had our annual Chinese New Year dinner or when our moms went out with each other, and we tagged along. But even so, when we met up it was never awkward, we always had something to say.

Fast forward to after MCO, we started talking again and our bond has never been stronger. It was after my SPM and IGs that we started hanging out again. I would also say college played a big part in bringing us closer again because I had to take maths for foundation, and I absolutely suck at it so I asked her for help. We met up every few days to study and eat lunch together. But to be honest, I think even without that we would’ve been quite close. Ever since then, we occasionally go out together to the point where if we don’t see each other for a few days we’d complain about not seeing each other enough (do you see the attachment issue there). We always joke that we will never survive in a long-distance relationship because we can’t even stand being away from each other for a few days let alone years. As much as I don’t want to face reality, she has plans to study abroad so I’ll have to accept that and be happy for her. Of course, I’m happy for her but it’s just a bit hard to let go, seeing one of your closest friends leave your side but that time has yet to come so for now I’ll spend as much time as I can with her before she leaves me for another country </3</3</3 It’s crazy to think that we’ve been friends for so long, not a lot of friendships can last this long I’d say. Watching us grow side by side since we were toddlers, going through many weird phases, getting heartbroken by the smallest things, crying to each other about stupid things, and many other stuff, we’ve seen it all. The next stage is watching each other succeed in our desired profession, getting married, having kids, and many more to come. (I lowkey got emotional writing this) I’m so grateful that I was able to meet her, and I hope we can carry this friendship till we’re in our 80s or even death. One of my favorite Mandarin idioms ‘白头偕老’ which basically means to live together until the white hairs of old age or to live to a ripe old age in conjugal bliss until death do us part. Usually, this phrase would be used on married couples, but I think I’d like to think of our friendship in this way too.

Omgggg Sicheng is trying to sing the Cantonese birthday song to Hendery. First of all he's completely off tune XD But of course he's not pronouncing the words correctly. But I appreciate the effort lol. Dejun and Hendery have done so much to immerse the guys in Cantonese culture lol. Btw, this birthday song doesn't have the same tune as the Happy Birthday song we're used to, so that means Sicheng had to purposely learn a new song for this lol.

They kept making fun of themselves for trying to act cool lol. The only person who ever got called cool during these few scenes was Kun (by Dejun).

Yangyang said that Hendery had to make three wishes but he had to keep the last one a secret. I wonder if this is a Taiwanese thing because I'd only heard of the birthday person getting three wishes in Someday or One Day lol.

Hendery's first wish was that everybody there would be rich!!!! His second wish was for health, the obvious safe wish :P

Party time (after eating a chocopie)

They're doing the same technique that I saw in NCT Dream's Glitch mode and Poison videos. They're recording things at twice the speed and slowing them down to normal speed to give them a certain dramatic effect.

Kun pointed out that these two track videos, plus Poppin' Love and On My Youth all have a similar theme of youth. To be specific, it's somewhat of a rebellious youth. I appreciate that connection of themes! Makes an album more memorable for sure :3

Dejun was saying that at least he had a hat but Hendery was soaked ^^;; and he put an extra towel on Hendery's head so he wouldn't get sick ToT

Week Nine - Exhibition Analysis

Exhibition Analysis Sheet

Today we are visiting the Daido Morayama Retrospective The Photographers’ Gallery.

At the gallery -

Look carefully at all the works. Choose one series of photos and answer the following questions:

Selected series - Lightbox: Tights in Shimotakaido, 1987/2018

What are these photos of? What might link them?

These photographs are of a women or multiple women wearing fishnet tights. What may link them is the fact that none of them capture a woman's face or emotions - just their legs.

What is the message behind them?

I think Daido is capturing the commercialization of sexual images. By cropping out the woman's face, Daido is removing identify and emotion from the notion of sexuality. This may be a commentary on how women are misrepresented and abused.

How do you know this?

I know this because of the black and white nature of the photo. If there was color, emotion might be delivered. Since color is omitted, the images seem to make a statement of fact, condemning the abuse of women in a consumerist society.

How do these photos convey the intended message visually?

Black & White, and framing. The way that the women's faces are not included in the frame forces audiences to see the women's bodies, unimpacted by their facial expressions. Are they being held under duress? Is this woman enjoying being photographed? We may never know, likely because that isn't the point.

Then Choose three photos from different parts of the exhibition. Take photos of each of them, then answer the following questions for each photo

Selected Series - Accident, 1969

Explain why you chose this photo.

I chose this photo because it initially confused me. It's called 'Accident," but not every image relates to the accident. I wanted to dive deeper to understand this series.

Describe how focus, contrast and composition are used in the photo, and what effect each of these attributes has. 

The images are out of focus, indicating that they probably were not taken by the press with highly expensive gear. There is very high contrast, signaling high emotions and dramatization. The photo of the man frames his wingspan quite prominently, putting a focus on what seems to be an angry speech. The photo of the car frames the wreckage close to the people, evoking an anxious feeling of danger.

Analyse the relationship between what you see in the photo and its message. 

Between the smoke, the angry speaker, the bloody bed and the wrecked cars, the message here seems to be one of violence and media. The way the speaker is photographed with an upward angle signals prominence, which could be a commentary on celebrities in the media. The lack of focus also combines with the lack of color to indicate that he message might not lie in the leaves, but rather the forest.

Do you need to read the exhibition text to understand the message of the photo?

I believe you do need to read the caption. Had I not known about Daido's fascination with celebrities and manipulation of photography by the media, I might have continued to be confused by the series.

Do you need to see the photo in the context of a series, or does this one photo convey the intended message on its own?

I think each photo delivers the same angst and violent message relating to the media on its own. While they certainly amplify this message as a series, each photograph combines the black/white blur with either wreckage, angry men, or blood to signal some kind of stressful violence.

Does the title help? 

I think the title is the most confusing part of the series. That being said, the title may be trying to implicate the bed as the victim's resting place, the car as the accident's location, and the politician as a proponent of vehicle safety regulation.

Does the style of the photo remind you of anything you have seen before?

The angst reminds me of the previous analysis I did on Paradiso, 2001-2002: Lorenzo Castore. While the scenes from Paradiso deliver a mood of angst much less directly than Accident, both leverage blur to signal the unpredictability of an urban setting.

3. how do the other characters generally feel about your self insert?

Mosty positive. Mostly. Noctic sees her like a big sister, they were close ever since he was little. Prompto definitely considers her bestie material, the kind you send memes to at 3 in the morning, and caption 'reminds me of you' (he also had a crush on her when they were in high school, which thankfully when she turned him down they were able to stay buddy close). Iris looks up to her. She's a beloved friend, and they often talk romance to one another. And uncle Cor, he adores his little girl. His niece is his most precious thing, and it's been this way since she was born! Like, he will fight anyone who dares think himself good enough to marry Evelyn (yes, even perfect Ignis. Iggy legit sparred with Cor to prove how serious he was in wanting to ask for her hand)

Gladio is where it gets complicated teenage years onward (like, I should write a whole essay about it). On one hand, he was a little cold to her because he noticed how she liked Ignis (and he is so very gay for Ignis). But then, as time went on, he realized part of his problem was that he kinda liked her as well! (His poor moment of "Oh shit I'm not gay, I'm definitely bi!" XD) There's quite a bit of growth between the two, though, and Evelyn and Gladio get to a point where their friendship is strong once more. He accepts that she really loves Ignis and he feels the same, and Gladio finds happiness in seeing two of his best friends together. He will tease though, and heaven help anyone who gives them grief cause that's his job!

5. does your self insert have any special powers or abilities?

Yes! She, even as a child, was quite receptive to magic, able to wield it quite well when it's given to her. As a child, she was not only with Noct so often to play with and be a friend, but she also helped him grow accustomed to and practice his magic. With the king's blessing, she was able to warp along with other forms of magic, but warping was her favorite. She let her magic go when she grew older, but it returned to her with the death of King Regis, much like it did for the Kingsglaive.

I suppose another power (which I wanna talk about) is that she has a decent draw stance. Evelyn's not much of a fighter, but her uncle taught her a lot about wielding his weapon of choice, a katana. He gifted her a blade of her own for her 16th birthday. She isn't the best with the blade, but it's clear by her stance and precision that she was taught by a master.

13. does your self insert have any information about their family?

Imma just give you her childhood as it pertains to family XD

Evelyn's mother was the eldest of two, and her father was an only child. Her uncle, Cor Leonis, rose quickly in the military and in status thanks to his skills, and in part because of this, her mother met her father, who was also in the military. Evelyn had one sibling, a younger brother, who was constantly in and out of the hospital since birth. Not long after her brother was born, her father left for on a mission outside of the city of Insomnia. Unfortunately, his team was never heard from and presumed dead.

All of this happened while Evelyn was too young to fully grasp everything, but her mother was distraught. Her uncle Cor helped out how he could and began taking her for a few days, then for weeks at a time.

After a few years of her living with her uncle almost more than with her own mother, her little brother died. She barely knew him, so she didn't know how to feel. Her mother couldn't take living in Insomnia anymore, though, but also realized she couldn't take care of her daughter. Not properly, at least. Cor had been taking care of Evelyn quite a bit by now. He understood her, knew she had friends (one being the prince no less), and offered to take custody. Evelyn was given the choice, and she chose to live with her uncle.

Her mother tried to write to her after leaving, but eventually the letters stopped arriving. Whether she simply stopped writing, or the mail was unable to make it through, Evelyn didn't know.

In the game, when everyone is in Lestallum, the group can help Evelyn find out more about her mother, as the last of the letters said she was there. After searching around town and talking to some locals, it is discovered that her mother passed away in a work accident at the power plant some years back. It's made clear that she always hoped her daughter would live a happy life, and she is given her mother's wedding ring; one of the only personal items left.

how did you end up making captions, for hc recap and/or in general? it's something i've wanted to do for a while but am not entirely sure how or where to start

Honestly, I just use YouTube's built in subtitle editor. It doesn't have a *ton* of functionality but it's fairly intuitive (shift+space to start/stop, shit+arrows to go back and forward by 5 seconds) and fast.

I start with the "edit as text" function and transcribe it there, then do a second pass where I break up lines that have obvious pauses (like if the last three words of a sentence are said after a pause for emphasis).

Then I wait for like 20 minutes for YouTube to auto-sync the captions, which it does an ok job of but not perfect. I usually have to spend another ~2x the vid length tweaking the timings on them but it's still faster than trying to break it up myself.

There's software out there that lets you do more advanced things like adding colors, but I'm still learning those. I did some captioning for a college video course back in like 2010 (temp agencies hand you the wildest jobs) so I've used official like, for TV closed captioning software before, and it's pretty straightforward except that it usually does the words as they appear instead of line by line. Any of those can be used and just uploaded right to youtube.

I'd suggest picking a short video of a couple minutes, maybe a twitch clip or something, as a practice to try out the software.

I'd had the prior experience doing it that I described above and I was looking for some freelance work to help pad the whole "leap of faith'd into being a full time creator so I didn't have to go back to work during the pandemic" thing; mostly I was doing copyediting but I did a little transcribing too. Zloy already had me checking each Recap ep for errors before it went out just cuz we're friends, and I was helping out with tags/descriptions for him and a couple others, so he decided that just officially hiring me to do the captions would be a win-win for us since he'd get captions and a dedicated paperwork person for the channel and I'd get my bills paid.

In general it's a job I enjoy cuz I'm a fast typer anyway and I'm the kind of person who really can only listen to one thing at a time, so I can't multitask during videos anyway. Ironically I don't do it much for my own vids cuz I get tired of trying to caption my friends, since it feels like it takes some fun out of it listening to the same line 30 times, even though I consider that exact sort of thing fun for the Recap and others' videos. (I think I just don't process my friends' words as words anymore, I'm so used to them talking that it gets auto-processed by my brain.)

Oh also I used to be like, hyper-particular about spelling and grammar, and helped grade papers in college and such as a result, so the accuracy necessary to make sure stuff's legible for ESL peeps and for the language to auto-translate where possible is pretty natural to me too. Obviously I'm not as much of a stickler in my everyday speech anymore, but as a writer it's still all very instinctive?

tldr I LIKE TYPING but I can't do it fast enough to be a court reporter so fuck it, write down the words that the minecraft people say so that all may enjoy the puns.

Summary: In which when Rudy and Y/N are on a live with the rest of the Outer Banks cast, Rudy confesses his feelings for Y/N.

You drove into the parking lot and got out of your car. You walked onto the set with your bag and your script. A few of your co-stars were there but you were early. The rest of them should show up in a bit.

"Hey y/n!" You herd Madison say behind you. You smiled and turned around and she ran over and hugged you. Madison was one of the people you got to meet before hand. The two of you practiced lines together and became good friends, the two of you have even hung out a few times.

"Hi Maddie!" You laughed and hugged her back. 

"Here, I'll show you where everything is." She said with a smile and led the way. You followed her to the trailer. 

"This is basically where you'll get your appearance ready for the show." She said. Madison was already ready, wearing Kiara's clothes. 

"Okay, I'll stick around here and get ready then." You smiled.

"Sounds good!" She smiled and walked out of the trailer. You put on the outfit you decided to wear for the first day in the pilot.

Once you got into the clothes you sat down in the chair to get your done and makeup. There was not much to do for that so it didn't take long at all. Once they were done you grabbed your phone and walked out of the trailer. 

Now Madelyn, Drew, and Rudy were all here and Chase, Jonathan and Austin were already here with Madison so everyone was here now so they were ready to get started. You all got in your places and started the first scene at the renovated house when the Pogues have to run from the police after they catch them there. 

You guys had to re-do the scene a few times but you eventually got a good take. You kept working and doing the scenes. You couldn't help but smile sometimes just by looking at your co-star Rudy. He was so adorable and sweet. He was also.. so fucking hot. 

You were happy your character got to be around Rudy's character JJ a lot and that the characters had a good friendship. Rudy was also super kind to you. He was so sweet and friendly towards you and you couldn't help but smile. 

You also couldn't help but be amazed at how good he portrayed JJ. He already fit the character so well and his acting was a 10/10. You were head over heels for him. You of course didn't want him to know that, just incase he didn't feel the same way. 

You knew you wouldn't know unless you went for it but, you were scared. Plus, it was just the first day and you didn't want to ruin things before it even started. So, for now you decided to try to make friends with him and sure enough it worked. 

You, Rudy, Chase, Madison, Jonathan, Madelyn, Drew, and Austin were all sitting together getting ready to do a livestream to promote the show. Outer Banks has officially finished the filming but has not been released to the public yet. 

At this point, with how close you and Rudy were all your fans believed you were secretly dating. Even some of the cast questioned if you were dating. They always joked around saying the two of you had to be dating secretly, but in reality you were just best friends.

Rudy was your best friend now. No one knew you better than Rudy did. He knew you better than you know yourself. You honestly wished all those rumors are true. You wished he felt the same way you felt about him.

The two of you were messing around playfully poking eachother and laughing while they were setting things up. Madison recorded the two of you and put it on her Instagram story with the caption "I love these dorks." 

Everything was all set up now so everyone sat down. You sat in between Rudy and Drew. The live started and you all were greeting the fans that were flowing into the live. The livestream got high in views very fast and you all got started. It was April 10th so the show was coming out in 5 days and everyone wanted to hype it up the few days before the release.

All the comments started flowing in. A lot of people kept commenting things about you and Rudy.

"Oh my god! Rudy and Y/N are so cute together!"

"Are Rudy and Y/N dating?"

"Rudy and Y/N are endgame!"

"Rudy and Y/N have to date soon!" 

You were reading all the comments and chuckled slightly. "Guys, Rudy and I are not dating or anything. I mean he an amazing guy but we are best friends." You chuckled. 

"Yeah. I mean we are friends but, if we are being totally honest here, I would not mind at all if we dated." Rudy said. You looked over at him surprised. 

"Really?" You asked shocked. 

"Yeah.." Rudy chuckled a little. "I've liked you since the first time we worked together but, I didn't now how to tell you and I thought you wouldn't feel the same way. I also didn't want to ruin the amazing friendship we have." Rudy said. 

"I like you too Rudy.." You said with a smile.

"It's ok if- wait really? You do?" He asked shocked. 

"Yeah.." You smiled. "I've liked you since the first time we worked together too." You said with a chuckle. The two of you were staring into each others eyes still shocked that the two of you felt the same way. You both seemed to be waiting for one of you to make a move. 

All the comments started flowing in about you and Rudy's emotions exposed.

"OMG! I knew they liked eachother!"

"OMGOMGOMG!"

"OMG! They need to kiss now!"

"YES! MY ENDGAME IS HAPPENING!"

Even the cast was watching you all, waiting for something to happen.

"Well? Kiss already!" Madison said. 

"Yeah, make the fans happy and just lay one on her Rudy." Chase said. You giggled softly as Rudy pulled you over and kissed you. You smiled and put your hands through his hair and he pulled you close. 

The two of you kissed for a good 3 minutes before you stopped realizing you were making out in front of your co-stars and on a live with thousands of people watching. 

"Well, Y/N.. would you be my girlfriend?" Rudy smiled. 

"Rudy, of course I will be your girlfriend." You smiled with a giggle and pecked him. After awhile you guys ended the stream and you and Rudy went out for a walk and to take photos again for Instagram. You were happy with him. You were the happiest you have ever been.

You knew Rudy was the one for you and you knew you wanted to spend the rest of your life with him and he felt the same way about you. In the end, the only person you ever really needed was Rudy, and now, you have him.
