Here, relationships are basically impossible. As time goes by, I see more and more riders oriented towards a “win or die” mentality, they hate you if you beat them, as if to win wasn’t other riders’ main goal as well. Their attitude changes depending on their results. Some time ago, and I’m not talking about centuries, mine was a sport made for enthusiasts: to win or to lose indeed was important, but it wasn’t everything. To this day, the atmosphere has deteriorated. Even off-track: some of them cheer, some of them boo, some of them get suspicious, some of them talk about biscuits*, but I would like to see who truly is immaculate to throw the first stone. “I know some people who wouldn’t pass a conscience test not even if they cheated”. I don’t even know where I read this quote anymore, it probably was in the middle of all of the dumb shit we send to each other via texts everyday, wasting our precious time despite having more interesting things to do. But it is a truthful quote, nevertheless: it perfectly reflexes a way of life that I cannot stand. This is also why I do not have any friends within this environment, and it saddens me a bit.

So I just read all 914 pages of Fool’s Fate in one day. I don’t think I’ve ever read that much in one day ever. These books are so good holy snickerdoodles I love the politics and the amazing worldbuilding (robin writes matriarchies and different societal structures SO GOOD) and the realistic characters and Fitz’s unreliable narration and also the gay ass ‘friendship’ between him and the fool (fitz ‘no homo but also my bond with you is deeper than my love for anyone else including my other half bonded wolf and my wife and also sex’ farseer)

So uh. Yeah. Excuse me while I go cry in the corner. Again.

Miscommunication trope has become unfashionable to love but it’s easily my favorite. First of all. Mutual pining. Star-crossed morons. I can’t bear the alternative, really, which is an uneven amount of pining—I need them to be in equivalent headspaces, but narrative tension still needs to exist somehow. Second, this trope can be done extraordinarily well (how I know is I’ll usually have a bodily reaction—stomach swoop! reverberation in my chest!) which I suppose makes the badly done ones stand out.

Miscommunication or fear of communication happens all the time. It’s very true to life, even with people who are good communicators, but here the stakes are so high. This tension is where all that pleasure (for me, the reader) comes from.

Further, “just talk to each other” no. When the stakes are this high the communication deployed needs to be wielded like a scalpel. Delicate, precise, ….whatever. Or, an explosion. Something desperate. It’s not regular communication. It’s fraught with meaning. It matters more to them than it would to anyone outside the dynamic. The consequences of failure seem cataclysmic. Words fail. Words fail all the time. When you feel that much and you just can’t pin it down. See I’m already gearing up to pine. It’s that easy!!

You have no idea how happy I am to see that other people like you don't like blades 2 as well. Like yes it was decent, but on the same level as book 1 in the LEAST.

And I agree, book 3 seems like an excuse to get fans off of their back about the writing. The finale felt extremely disappointing, compared to the thrill you could feel in book 1 end

Yeah, I’m still gonna play book 3 and (foolishly) hope that it’ll be better. But those hopes aren’t too high because book 2 was not a good set up for book 3 at all in my opinion. There’s so much going on. I don’t like that Valax is a part of our friend group now. However, the group dynamics were off long before that if I’m being real. Mal’s route was ruined for me.

When I was going through and deleting my screenshots the other day, I reread the “You slept through it scene” and just felt a renewed sense of hurt and anger at him and really all of our friends. Mal caught a lot of heat from me specifically because he’s my LI and the one who said such an awful thing. But honestly, the rest of the group essentially agreed with him by expanding on what he said (Imtura and Nia) or not saying anything at all (Tyril) and only getting on one accord to exclude MC.

And then on top of all of that, there are quite a few holes that really should be patched up. The plot was a mess for the majority of the story. Tbh it was almost giving Endless Summer because they were locking important information behind diamond scenes and in the lore tablets.

So all this to say that at this point in time, I no longer have faith that PB can handle complex storytelling. Their parent company and higher ups (unsurprisingly) only care about money. And the writers themselves are too lazy and too biased. Does that mean they can no longer write enjoyable stories? No, of course not. But I do think they need to rein it in and be a bit more realistic about what they can handle right now because there’s nothing wrong with a simpler book/plot that’s aware of what it’s trying to accomplish. And it’s clear that they were far too ambitious with Blades 2

For shits and giggles I read an old book review of Mockingjay seemingly around the time it came out and it may have been the most infuriating take I’ve ever seen just by the way of how it hits way off the mark of what the book was trying to say and maybe the thing that irritates me most is that they rather Katniss just straight up died by the end of the series so she could have stayed a noble heroine or some bullshit which she has never ever been

Not to slander the girl because I love Katniss dearly however she was a teenage girl who got strung along in a series of unfortunate and grisly events and she managed to keep up with most of them through book one and two but she definitely hits the deep end by the start of book three because surprise surprise she’s deeply traumatized after losing so many people she cares about not to mention her district and she has to live her days with the knowledge that her friend and partner and someone she loves romantically is being abused and tortured by the most cruel man in all of fucking Panem and on top of it all she is still being asked to play the figurehead of the Rebellion! The girl can’t even grieve for a few minutes without having to be pulled into her country’s fucked up politics so people will look at her as someone strong and someone to fight behind even though it’s such a lie because she’s a very broken young girl living through war and she keeps losing more through the book until she breaks forever from something that will never heal correctly and you’d rather she have just killed herself or would be a nicer narrative to have her die fighting the Capitol so it can seem like she died as a warrior? Because that would have been the biggest waste of a final book to a great trilogy

Katniss is not a person who wanted to become a warrior but that’s what was thrust upon her and then she got to live the rest of her life with peace and quiet and love and hard days and nightmares but she made it. She played the Games for maybe two years of her life and then she actually got out and she lived her life freely without anyone telling her to keep up an act or watch what you say or to not be seen doing illegal activity so the Capitol doesn’t march in and kill everyone she holds dear and maybe just get rid of District 12 at the same time. She made it through not quite the same person she used to be but she made it through and she could find some semblance of hope for herself and her future after all the dark days she faced and that it so so brave of her and that’s why she lives
