#I could write whole essays at this point I think

Ok, so if Eowyn wants to die in battle to avoid a worse fate at the hands of the enemy, why is it so easy to miss that??? Why does Tolkien misdirect us?
I could write a whole essay on Tolkienâs love of understatement, of meaningful silence, of âglimpses of untold stories,â but letâs focus on Eowyn for now.
Tolkien creates a suffocating bubble of silence around Eowyn. Itâs brilliant and horrible and I love it and I hate it.
Faramir tells Eowyn what he thinks about her motives: âYou desired to have the love of the Lord AragornâŚ. But when he gave you only understanding and pity, then you desired to have nothing, unless a brave death in battle.â And Eowyn doesnât correct him! She just looks at him silently. And she declares her love for him during this scene.
Eowyn is often described as âfrozenâ or âcold,â and itâs clear that she has to hide her true feelings a lot of the time. Tolkien REALLY hits us over the head with the silencing of Eowyn in the Houses of Healing, when all the men are staring at her unconscious body and wondering why she was so unhappy. Eomer is positive that her crush on Aragorn was the problem; Aragorn doesnât want to take the blame. Finally Gandalf speaks up:
âMy friend, you had horses, and deeds of arms, and the free fields; but she, being born in the body of a maid, had a spirit and courage at least the match of yours.â
And then he says this:
âMy lord, if your sisterâs love for you, and her will still bent to her duty, had not restrained her lips, you might have heard even such things as these escape them. But who knows what she spoke to the darkness, alone, in the bitter watches of the night, when all her life seemed shrinking, and the walls of her bower closing in about her, a hutch to trammel some wild thing in?â
Gandalf has just made the most openly feminist statement in the novel (aside from Eowyn and her âburned in the houseâ speech), but he follows it by saying that Eowyn has private thoughts that he cannot or will not explain. It is up to the men to decide if they want to know more. Eomer is deeply struck by Gandalfâs words and silently rethinks his entire life with Eowyn.
And then Aragorn has a truly infuriating bros-before-hoes moment: he breaks the uncomfortable silence by reassuring Eomer that yeah, maybe Eowynâs crush on him was actually the problem after all. Just a minute earlier, he had denied responsibility for Eowynâs despair. But he hates to see his friend, his brother in arms, feeling shamed. So he jumps in to rescue Eomer from his negative emotions. And Eowyn is RIGHT THERE, silent and unable to defend herself.
We already know that Aragorn is reluctant to know more about Eowynâs problems. During their confrontation in Dunharrow, Aragorn dodges all of Eowynâs attempts to make him see her point of view.
âA time may come soon,â said he, âwhen none will return. Then there will be need of valour without renown, for none shall remember the deeds that are done in the last defence of your homes. Yet the deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised.â
And she answered: âAll your words are but to say: you are a woman, and your part is in the house. But when the men have died in battle and honor, you have leave to be burned in the house, for the men will need it no more. But I am of the House of Eorl and not a serving-woman. I can ride and wield blade, and I do not fear either pain or death.â
âWhat do you fear, lady?â he asked.
Neither Aragorn nor Eowyn want to talk about what will happen to her if the enemy wins; this is why there is so much misdirection about Eowynâs motives! Aragorn glosses over the atrocities that are likely to happen and tells Eowyn she can have a heroic last stand, as a treat. Eowyn is infuriated by his poetic vagueness and spits out this horrifying image of being burned aliveâbut then she fiercely insists that she is a warrior and fears neither pain nor death. She doesnât want to perform feminine vulnerability to get Aragorn to listen to her. Eowyn is proud and dignified, which makes it especially painful when she resorts to kneeling and begging Aragorn to let her fight. As she tells Faramir, she desires no manâs pity.
I have to give a shoutout to @balrogballs, who has written about this subject extensively:
The cultural fantasy of the female victim of violence often traps women in an unyielding present tense, positioning them as symbols of sentimentality. These women are objectified and become sites of social intervention, their suffering the focal point of external pity and mourning. The narrative demands their pain be witnessed, but rarely offers a way forward, reducing them to objects for emotional consumption rather than subjects of their own story.
This is exactly what Eowyn is trying to avoid. She wants to be remembered as a hero, not a victim.
Tolkien embroiders this theme very cunningly by having Faramir give Eowyn a cloak that belonged to his mother, Finduilas, who died when he was five. Faramir thinks the cloak is âfitting for the beauty and sadness of Eowyn,â which has a deeper meaning that he probably does not intend. Finduilas is also the name of an elf maiden from the Silmarillion, who was captured by orcs and killed with a spear. In Tolkienâs work, both Finduilases exist mainly to provide tragic backstories for male protagonists. Oh, and Arwenâs name was originally Finduilas as well. To be a Finduilas is to be beautiful and passive, and to die tragically. A fate that Eowyn rages against.
(The Finduilas thing becomes even more absurdly cryptic when you recall that only Tolkien knew about the tragic connotation of the name at the time LotR was published. But he did this kind of thing!!! Recall Elrond and his warning against oaths.)
I have always wondered why Eowyn didnât challenge Faramir when he informed her that she was suicidal because of Aragorn. Perhaps she simply wanted to put the whole nightmare behind her.
But the most painful silence, to me, involves Theoden. Gandalf reveals that Wormtongue was planning to rape Eowyn, and Theoden says nothing. Eomer grabs his sword and has to be restrained from killing Wormtongue, but Theoden actually offers Wormtongue a second chance to prove his loyalty:
"Do you hear this, Wormtongue?" said Theoden. "This is your choice: to ride with me to war, and let us see in battle whether you are true; or to go now, whither you will. But then, if ever we meet again, I shall not be merciful."
This betrayal of Eowyn happens so fast that it is easy to miss. None of the characters comment on it, and the narrative moves on. Thereâs something horribly realistic about a powerful man with a beloved image casually offering a second chance to a sexual predator and everyone, including the reader, being unable to process what is happening.
The silences in Eowynâs story come from the male characters and from Eowyn herself. Theoden and Aragorn want to avoid talking about the type of violence that threatens her, and they ignore her desires. Eowyn doesnât want to be trauma porn; she resents having to explain herself. And this silence offers readers the freedom to empathize with her, like Eomer, or to fall back on sexist explanations, like Aragorn.

The White Olive Tree - finished 16.02.2025
In hell weâll meet, tortured by the past. I have such conflicting feelings about this drama. I loved and hated exactly the same aspects of the writing.
This is not a fun romance with excitement and angst delivered by the war context. This is not âDescendants of the Sunâ with no real stakes. People die here, painful and tragic deaths. There are real consequences the characters need to face, the traumas are not magically healed. Itâs heavy, it's painful. Itâs real.
As much as it is a love story, I think the central part of it is the trauma. From a psychological point of view, they did a lot of this right, starting from the diagnosis and ending on the conclusion. Traumatic experiences do not always only lead to PTSD. Sometimes you might end up with anxiety, depression, OCD. So not labeling every character with PTSD was great. Different people will react to situations differently.
Song Ran became depressed, Li Zan who was by all means no cut for the job in the military, ended up with severe PTSD. Benjamin who from a young age led a rather hard life was able to require a lot of emotional resilience and handled the emotional pain in the most healthy way. Sa Xin who lost his mother spiraled into anger and need for justice and revenge.
What's more, I do appreciate how with Li Zan case, they show psychological issues can heavily impact your recovery from physical injuries too. How scary the process of recovery is. How, while taking the first step is the key, it's not the end of it all. Even after seeing the psychiatrist he was still hesitant. He did not follow up. He claims to be better. He kept lying to himself and to others. So sometimes it's easier to convince yourself you are getting better and you can push through it by yourself. Fooling yourself you are stronger than you truly are.
Then we had Song Ran - what a great portrayal of depression and anxiety. How from the outside she might have seemed fine, but we as viewers saw how she was not, how she was honestly barely holding up at times. I love how they didnât show depression as this 1:0 idea - you are either completely dysfunctional, or fine. With depression you can also have good days, you can be happy, smile.
Whatâs so tragic for me is - this is a love story that should have not happened for Song Ranâs sake. She could have healed from her depression, she could have gotten better, if it was not for Li Zan constantly re-traumatizing her with his actions. Li Zan was such a great and complex character.
I could write a whole essay just about him. A man that had skill that could save many people, but also no psychological advantages and strengths required to do the job. I love how this drama shows good intentions do not mean good results. How traits we see as good: empathy, selflessness, compassion, in extreme situations can be a person's biggest flaws. Li Zan has a savior complex and there was no good way out of the situation he was in. Not going to Easter Country would eat him alive from the grief and guilt of not helping when he can. Going back to Easter Country means getting more traumas on top of the ones he did not heal from. He hurt himself, he hurt people he loved, but he also saved so many lives. But no matter the choice, he would be feeling guilty and that feeling would slowly kill him. Itâs a tragic story that could not have a happy ending.
I know there are different opinions about the ending, but for me itâs rather clear him and Song committed suicide. He understood she would never leave him alone. She understood he will never get better. They decided to be together till the end. And they decided when the end will happen. From the scene of them talking about reincarnation, to the narrated goodbye letter to the parents, not once showing them interact with anyone after it was written. Even the oversaturated editing that made them glow in the last scene - thatâs the tragic ending I think the majority of us knew will happen, even if we wanted to live in denial till the end.
At the same time at some point I was getting tired with how "realistic" the drama was. Yes, the recovery from any psychological issue is a whole journey, but this is a show... it has to be presented in a way that reflects reality WHILE keeping the viewers engaged and not exhausted. We are running in circles with little to no development. The message was clear, but they still hammered it over and over again.
The repetitiveness at some point crossed the line from - that's how life works, to - well now I don;ât feel as emotionally impacted by what Iâm seeing, because I saw more or less the exact same scene in this show five times already.
It kind of starts to feel like a trauma porn... no balance of anything. There are no ups and downs. It's just down, down.... and a bit more down until we are in a fucking hell of traumas and mental disorders and bad news and no happiness and no rays of hope. Especially on Zanâs part. Song at least vented her sadness to him, and he just took it all in, when he couldnât even handle his own feelings, not to mention help others dealing with theirs. He was emotionally overworked and it's exhausting to watch.
I am aware that the drama truly showed just glimpses of how bad a real war is. This is nothing compared to reality. But this is not reality. This is not a documentary. I do think that itâs a valid criticism of how far they tried to make the audience feel sad and bad. A Perfect example was Benâs death which was extremely unnecessary. What was the point of killing Ben? What did it bring to the story? To the message? Other than dumping more trauma onto the viewers? Especially with how they set it up with Benâs talks about how he found a new family in his friends, how he felt more grounded and alive than ever before. Scenes of his plans to start over and get a degree in journalism. They did everything they could to make Benâs death feel as tragic and painful as it could get, and I do not understand why. Itâs just dumping trauma for the sake of trauma alone.
Moving on from the sadness into more happy/good aspects: I cannot ignore the bromance between Ben and Sa Xin. I honestly went crazy for these two. By all means they followed so many dynamics of a typical straight secondary couple. They shared such a profound connection and care for each other, it was hard not to want something more from them. The writing team did all they could to include as much of them as possible, by passing the censorship by giving Ben a âromantic interestâ that got barely any screen time or depth. I will die on this hill - Dr. Pei existed just to pass the censorship.
Now, I need to talk about the performances. I want to be clear - the whole main cast did a stellar job with their portrayal, but Chen Zhe Yuan delivered probaby the best performance of his life and everyone else just faded into background. I am speechless. I knew he was good, I did not know he was this good. I donât even know how to express how impressed I am by each and every scene he delivered. How much Li Zan changed as the character, how well Zhe Yuan was able to transition from this confident man to a shell of his past self. How you could feel the silent pain when he was trying to hold it all in, and the raging despair when he was breaking down thinking Song was hurt and dead. Be it subtle representation of extreme emotions, or completely uncontrolled misery - he did not waste one second of his screen time.
On the other hand⌠the way the poor dubbing and acting of the majority of foreigners often completely took me out of the scene I was watching was simply disappointing. such a high quality of drama and production, with such a low quality of casting for guest and bits parts.
Then we have the soundtrack. I am not a person that pays that much attention to the music in dramas and music unless itâs extremely good, or extremely bad. Here the extremely good fits perfectly. Some of my favorite songs were: Ignite Me On Fire, Into the Pieces, Find My Way Back to Life, Home. As a whole the OST is an easy 10/10 (except for that do re mi fa sol la song, I cannot with that chorus, it should not exist).
For the production - impressive. The fighting scenes were well choreographed and it made sense there were not that many of them - no one has hand to hand combat during wars, they use guns. The explosions were surprisingly well produced too. We know how off Chinese dramas can get with their CGI and special effects, so Iâm glad they put quite a lot of effort to make it good here. Whatâs more? Really well done prosthetic make up for Zanâs fingers. I was curious if they would just cleverly use angles or make him hide in hand all the time, and I was surprised they actually made the effort to show us how it looks, and also make it look realistic.
Overall, this was for sure a journey. Emotional and tragic one. Maybe a bit too tragic on the delivery. At some point I felt like the tragic scenes were not even said, because they did not make much sense plot wise. Maybe if the show was a little bit shorter - 30 episodes would probably be enough to present the same story with the same impact, but less repetitiveness. As human beings we get desensitized after being exposed to the same thing over and over again, and the writers did not take that into consideration when planning how to present the plot.
#the white olive tree#cdrama#chinese drama#chinese drama review#i had more thoughts but i was too exhausted to write them down...

ruminating on lucrezia setting down the candle under the rope, knowing that it was 50/50 odds she was sending her own brother to his death and not really caring because no matter if he died or the lady he was spending the night with died, she would've gotten revenge for paolo's death versus her telling cesare to eat something before taking a meal with della rovere in case he tries something (because she knew his plans to poison both pope and son since it was really her idea). with juan, she leaves it up to the fates to decide if he will die, but with cesare she takes no chances, making sure he will only be poisoned enough to keep him from chasing her down, to allow her time to make a life for herself outside of rome, outside their love for each other. even though both brothers committed the same crime-- killing an innocent that she cared for (i'd actually like to argue that ces one upped juan by making lucrezia an accomplice to his crime!!), she was unwilling to punish them in the same way because she still held love in her heart for cesare, even if he did steal the last of her innocence. whereas, the second she put it together that juan had been the one to kill paolo, her love for him died.

thereâs this funny trend i see in trafficblr art, in that, when thereâs a lineup of every past winner, most players will be surrounded by symbols that were relevant to their POV, and perhaps drawn with the last emotion theyâd felt just before death (or maybe just whatever emotion the artist most associates with the character). The winners might be doing something, or in a pose that reflects how they wonâthere are a million ways to make a life series winnersâ piece. Whatâs funny about it is that no one ever seems to know what to do with Scott. Heâs most often just standing there looking mildly disgruntled. And for the symbols heâs most depicted with, itâs typically poppies, which are only relevant to the first season; last life scott does not place any importance on poppies, poppies dont ever come up beyond a brief interaction in episode 1, and jimmy as a whole is less relevant to scottâs pov in last life than he is in every other season.
not that this is an issue with the art; the pieces are beautifully done, itâs just representative of how little fandom discussion there is about scottâs win thematically. Most discussion I see are about the watchers and how they hate scott for defying him or whatever, but watcher lore is not discussion of the series itself as much as it is a fan creation that is retroactively applied to create meaning.
Scottâs Last Life win, to me, was achieved through accomplishing what Third Life Scott could not.
Scott spent 3L waiting for his day one ally to die. He kept Jimmy at a distance, often fully gearing himself up first before backtracking to help Jimmy along. Thereâs a funny disparity in episode 5, where Jimmy spends the entire episode trying to get good enchants on his iron armor, while Scott sets up a villager and gets good enchants for the full diamond set that heâd already had in storage, in about half the time Jimmy took trying to accomplish his own goal, iirc. This disparity is also something scott acknowledges with the âIâll always be more powerful than youâ line, but itâs been a while since ive written a post like this so i unfortunately do not have the episode number memorized on that one anymore. But Scott goes on to explain that heâll always have better armor and weapons, which is why Jimmy could never kill him. This is all to say that Jimmy and Scott do not stand on equal grounds in their alliance, and, more importantly, Scott does not depend on Jimmy. The progress Scott makes in Third Life is entirely his own, with Jimmy as more of an afterthought than a teammate.
This is what landed Scott his all time lowest placement. After Jimmy dies first, Scott loses sight of his priorities and dedicates his remaining time alive to avenging Jimmy, rather than focusing on his own longevity (like heâd go on to do in future seasons). And, in that way, Scottâs attitude towards Jimmy (disposable, going to die, unreliable) was an indirect contributor to Scottâs low placement.
In contrast: Scott could not have won Last Life without Pearl. Scott has to rely on Pearl from day 1, having only two lives to start with himself. Pearl gives Scott two lives total. Pearl and Scott are almost always together. They made it to the final four by each otherâs side. And that forced day 1 reliance on pearl breaks down the role scott typically assumes (*heâs* supposed to be the person people rely on, heâs supposed to be the one bringing everything to the table) which curbs his tendency to see himself as above others, which then allows for the most genuine happiness i have ever seen him have in an alliance.
The comparison between the way Scott talks to Pearl and the way Scott talks to Jimmy is like night and day. Scott doesnât compliment or otherwise say anything supportive towards Jimmy (save for the âI believe in you! MCC has trained you for this moment!â during Jimmyâs dare to flare attempt) until after Jimmy has already died. With Pearl, however, Scott is much more open about his care towards her, saying that sheâs his best friend and that he loves her as early as episode 2. Thereâs more examples but between last life and third life, Scottâs attitude towards his primary ally is completely different, and i think itâs symptomatic of Scott allowing himself to love and be vulnerable rather than keeping himself at a distance. And i think that itâs so special that scott won the season where he was so close with his day one alliance, directly because of his day one alliance.
because, to me, one of scottâs defining characteristics is his self reliance. He will have allies, yes, but he often assumes a supportive role and acts as a supplier. He doesnt like taking things from other people. Last Life is different because Scott relies on Pearl, too. Itâs also not a coincidence that last life is the only season where scott is normal about jimmy but thatâs a different post
tldr yes scott won last life with the power of love but not in the way people say he did (ignoring the boogeyman curse was strategy âď¸)
I SHOULD NOTE, though, that the boogeyman curse was still a fail. Although purposeful, Scott receives the penalty and apologizes to his team. He says he just couldnât bring himself to do it. I do think that his words here arenât fully honestâ heâd admitted earlier that this choice was fully for strategy. But I also think his apologetic attitude here is genuine. Scott is a perfectionist, he needs to succeed; failing, though purposeful, still hurts. He feels the need to apologize. It means so much to me that his win in last life directly follows the choice to fail on purpose. Iâm insane though idk
third life scott embodies scotts flaws while last life scott is him overcoming them đ is what im trying to say đ last life scott is everything that third life scott could not bring himself to be, in allowing himself to love and depend on other people and overall just be a person.
#I couldve explained this way better but i came up with the thesis in the very last paragraph#And went ohhh. Well. The post is already written#So yes i could reformat this all and make it much more compelling by breaking down exactly what i think scotts flaws are throughâ#Series by series analysis#and then go on and use examples from ll to paint it as the antithesis of all that#all to put in a provable factual way just HOW different scott is in last life compared to other series#And how this aided him and eventually got him the win#But i think thats like. A whole essay?#im imagining an essay format. and i do not. want to write a whole essay right now#so im hoping this kind of shitty condensed version gets my point across#there is an annoying lack of citations but as stated i have not done a scott post in a while and dont have this shit as memorized#also its my birthday in 6 minutes can you believe it#asks#that.blue.mf

just remembered the greats from jrwi pd. there's a lot of characters i wish we got to see more of in prime defenders and all of the greats are definitely on that list!
#jrwi#jrwi show#jrwi prime defenders#i could write a whole essay about vyncent and his role in the fauna arc#i really don't think it gets talked about enough#pd is all about characters struggling with identity and who they want to be but even beyond the obvious i think vyncent captures this theme#like yeah he doesn't have full autonomy over his body for most of the story#so that's obvious#i had a point i was gonna make but i'm on mobile and i don't actually know how to go back and read tags to know what i was on about#so i guess ill stop here

something something foils moving in opposite directions Goku's always happy to seek and fight stronger opponents because he spent most of his life being the strongest guy in the room and Vegeta wants to be the strongest/is always exhausted to find stronger opponents because he spent most of his life having to navigate his survival around the whims of the strongest guy in the universe room and so Goku has a foundation of safety and stability and so spends his time craving challenge and adventure and Vegeta has a foundation of challenge and adventure and spends his time craving safety and stability and the overlaid section of their venn diagram is that the only way they know how acquire and maintain those things is through battle
#thank you this has been the laziest media analysis post of my career#dbtag#media analysis#something something a game to goku is a threat to vegeta etc#there's a pinned thought here about how Vegeta also didn't learn about the dragon balls until he was ?? 30?? and so all loss is permanent#and goku has been familiar since he was ~12 and hasn't faced a permanent consequence since he was 10 years old and even then he got closure#sometimes I think about how Vegeta saw Trunks die and how Krillin was mad at him for reacting since they could fix it with the dragon balls#but Vegeta has very limited experience with the dragon so to him in that moment that was permanent and Trunks was Dead. Forever.#And we talked before in a 2am post about Vegeta having never experienced grief born of love and I stand by it because his feelings then wer#still very new and very odd and not something he'd accepted until that moment so it was raw power but not as powerful as it could've been#all this to say in my heart of hearts I think Vegeta deserves to retire at the end of super (if super continues) -- not as a warrior#but as an infantryman. he's a prince and now he's got his domain and his family and his planet to look after and I think he deserves#to go home and stay home and help piccolo bully gohan into training more often when goku inevitably leaves to hop the multiverse#geets wanted to take a sabbatical when Bulla was born but didn't get the chance because Freeza coming back freaked him out too much#but whether freeza gets a redemption arc or gets defeated -- Granolah's arc seemed to shift his perspective on being the strongest#and I just grips fist I just think it would be a really nice full circle for Vegeta to inherit his throne in a way he never expected and#finally get his kingdom to look after and protect in the way that he was looking forward to being king of his own planet all those years ag#Goku's got Broly and Jiren and Hit and all the others to keep him busy and happy now -- and if Freeza gets a redemption arc he'll probably#continue playing slap-ass with Goku for the rest of his life -- and Vegeta's got Gohan and Piccolo and Goten and Trunks#I just think them getting a nice bittersweet 'This is where we part ways' would be really nice for both of them because !!#They couldn't have done this without each other. They couldn't have known this kind of life was possible without each other.#So they swap lots and live happier than they ever imagined they could be#especially since Vegeta has proved to himself that he can close any gap Goku creates in progress that's not a concern anymore#And obvs the door's always open!! There's no point closing it Vegeta's tried the locks they don't work on Goku#anyway here's me putting the whole essay in the tags again#this isn't an essay as much as it is stream of consciousness tag blogging#anyway i'm too lazy to write fic or draw comics so we get ramblings instead

i wanted to make a post about a thing but the more i think about it the more i want to say and it's just going to end up being a big ramble essay, so instead i'll just give the thesis statement, thusly:
as the #1 Ratgrinders Apologist (self-appointed), of course they're the final boss fight to the death. i expected nothing less and the people trying to make discourse about it are ignoring the entire context of this being a Dungeons and Dragons game
#they're not playing 'discuss our traumas and and try to help strangers grow: the game'#they're playing 'murder people for getting in our way: the game'#which i know is now me being snubbing about D&D as a game but like. siobhan said it: theyve committed SO much murder#did the lunch lady in episode 2 deserve to be murdered? did the skater dwarves deserved to be murdered?#did the monsters the school sicced on the kids in their Last Stand deserve to be slaughtered like that??#its literally the name of the game!#the two things that are turning this into a bigger essay are 1) me being actually very disappointed in Burrow's End with how the players#just did not want at all to engage with the moral greyness aabria was trying to bring into the story#it was clear that was a direction she wanted to explore and i wanted to see it explored#but even OUT of characters the cast just would NOT engage or acknowledge the validity of that direction#and there was only so much aabria could do without being labeled a killjoy... because D&D often ISN'T a game for reckoning with#the justification of your character's actions! its a game for killing giant bears and saving the town from cultists!!#baked into the foundation of the game conceit is 'you are the hero and you are saving the day ergo your actions are Right and Just'#thing 2) i just listened to that WWW fireside the other day where brennan goes on about how combat does not get in the way#of story in dnd. that whole stove metaphor? and it rankled me so much lol because like aabria finally says after that:#yeah you bring your own food to the stove but when what you've got is a stove. the food you make is GOING to get cooked#combat and fighting and killing is baked into the system from its foundation. acting like D&D or even just d20 (the system)#is a resolution engine that also allows fighting and not a fighting engine that also allows other skills is. wishful thinking i think#and to bring this back to the POINT: of COURSE they're going to kill the rat grinders! because it's fun!#because thats how you resolve conflict in a combat game! straight up i honestly believe a lengthy conversation trying to win the kids over#would have been a weird energy to end the season on! it would have been a let down!#it would have been a huge tonal shift. because the tone you bring to a D&D game is 'killing this is fine actually'#and if you dont like that you /dont/ play D&D. its not a value judgment#i LOVE getting into moral implications and justifications and ive gotta tone it down when i run D&D games because it can kill the vibe#anyway. i said i wasnt going to write the whole essay and im not. but i did write most of the rant oops

including proper citations where you're not "supposed" to is the funniest fucking thing in the world to me. i just sent an email to my instructor quoting and citing said instructor with a works cited section
#shitpost#it was me arguing that I shouldn't have to go to tutoring for this paper due tomorrow#it's part of the paper requirements but she said we could send an email arguing why we shouldn't have to#and MAN i hope she excuses me because#i was planning to write the whole thing this afternoon and tomorrow#and if I have to come back to campus. just to go visit tutoring for a few minor pointers#i'm going to be miffed#i asked her how many points i'd lose if I just didn't do it#and she was like...i don't know...I didn't think that far ahead...i didn't think anyone wouldn't do it since it's a requirement....#like. love her but also. have you MET college students???#we will skip things sometimes#anyway. she came up with a number and it's not...bad? but it's not great either#so. i'd really just rather be excused#this is what I get for writing my essays last minute. alas#i always do pretty well either way!! so

No way that just happened
#procrastinated my homework for TWELVE HOURS TODAY#only the learn the one assignment i thought i had to do is actually due friday and the other i literally cant do bc he forgot to post the#reading and you cant write a reaction essay on the reading if you cant read it can you?#broooooo#technically i still have to do my portuguese but like. its easy and wont take long and ill have time tomorrow to do it if i dont have to#write the paper. and if i do write the paper theres a nonzero chance i skip portuguese to do it. so like....#probable outcome paper moved to wednesday for next reading#i just read the one for tmrw once he posts it during my 2hr break which is when i do my portuguese too#if this actually works out for me w/o making my morning hell tomorrow thats hysterical#does jackshit for 2 whole days w no consequences..... could you imagine....#also sorry for the morning prof is gonna have when he finds out he didnt post it. also sorry that i had to tell him at midnight with an#essay due on it (obvious procrastinator)#also sorry that NO ONE ELSE pointed it out yet (even more obvious procrastinators)#sucks bc i know its gonna make his day sucky and were friends#so like sorry im the bearer of bad news my friend#i say friends i mean hes still my professor but hes a 25yo grad student ive have 3 classes w including study abroad#like weve gone clubbing together and he bought me alcohol the one time i think its safe to say were cool#as much as anyone who has the power to kill my gpa can be

"The truth is, I also wanted to see you change the future. But there wasn't enough time."
is far too potent a line to come from Yugioh
#yugioh 5ds#this is not a jab at yugioh btw#it's a jab at people who think yugioh is silly#like you're entitled to your opinions and not everyone has to like everything but if youve never watched it#then you're missing what its fans actually love about it#yeah sometimes it IS silly#like the time judai/jaden duels a freaking monkey in gx#but then you have stuff like *z-one*#and maybe this line is only potent in context but idc#i watch the end of that duel and this is the line that sticks in my head from it#because the whole time youre fed this idea from him that hope is pointless that he *tried* that and it didn't work so he gave up on hope#but no he actually *didn't*#he never actually gave up hope the real problem is that he ran out of *time*#so he came back to *change that* to give everyone else the time that he didn't have#(i mean his methods were terrible but that's not the point)#(i could write a whole frickin essay on z-one okay he intrigues me as a character)#anyway all that to say that yeah sometimes it IS a silly card game anime but sometimes it tells really great stories too

Iâve cried between three and four times in the past 24 hours. It started with watching The Iron Giant on the treadmill yesterday (GREAT movie, but I legitimately always forget how much it makes me feel. I start losing it when Hogarth and the Giant are talking in the junkyard after the scene with the deer. EVERY. TIME. And then again during the climax. AUGH!!! So yeah, ymmv if that counts as one or two cries).
Anyway! Itâs kind of expected since itâs that time of the month, but also I KEEP DELIBERATELY SEEKING OUT SAD STUFF. Knock it OFF brain!! Weâre on the same team, and we gotta get through this TOGETHER!!!
#I âcould write a whole tag essay about how the iron giant is a perfect film but at this point it would be Weird#Iâm sad and wistful and thinking about the fragility of life and the fleeting nature of joy!#and the horrors and the terrors and kindness and goodness in the face of violence#the cactus speaks#the cactus rambles about cartoons#I AM NOT A GUN#NOOOOOO STOPPPPPP DONâT THINK ABOUT IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!

I'll never understand how they moved on as normal after "there's nobody in this WORLD I trust with my son more" and "do you know how much christopher misses you?" and "if I die you become christopher's legal guardian". (gif set idea maybe?) eddie is always using chris to tell buck he loves him, it's time for a real I love you or I will start yelling at someone
making this gif set POSTHASTE!!!
#please do not get me started on the nobody in this world line#like I could write a fucking essay on that line alone#its unreal to me#he really said hey man ive known you for like under a year at this point I think. anyway I trust you more than my closest blood relatives#WITH MY CHILD#like he said that with his whole chest#he was thinking about putting buck in his will right that instant#asks#anonymous

I'm gonna let you in on a badly kept secret. most of my dazai analysis is truly just me projecting. but being decent enough at bullshitting to make it sound convincing so ppl usually end up agreeing with my takes
#what i lack in actual reading comprehension and analysis abilities i make up for in charisma and fake confidence#ahdjfllhh or maybe my projections just fit! maybe i accidentally do make good analysis! or at least offer alternative readings!#anyway i was thinking abt his relationship with pain again. and i started writing an essay in my head#before realizing I'm basically describing my own relationship with it. and that my experiences are not universal esp in regards to that#but just bc they're not universal doesn't mean they're nonexistent! who's to say dazai doesn't have them as well đŠ#fr tho i think with a character like him that hides a lot of himself and his true feelings. insisting on one 'canon' reading is dumb#the whole point is you view him through your own personal experience. imo. that's what he'd want too#the emptiness inside him is meant to be filled by his audience. whether inside the story or outside it. i think.#that's why he is one thing around fyodor and another around atsushi and i see him one way and you see him in another one#and all these readings are right and all these versions are still him. you don't know what's inside the donut after all#but again :) even this part could be just me projecting :) but see how nicely i bullshitted through it to make it sound deep?#(<- being sincere but hiding it with irony as to not get rejected. as one does) (<- admits it bc who tf would get this far into my tags)#(but thank you if you did ily) (also shoutout to anyone who ever validated my unhinged analysis/projection mwah)

Hi. Read your fic WHAT THE FUC- (/POS ITS SO GOOD??) BRUH I WENT INTO IT BEING LIKE "oh I'm just curious as to what this'll be, I'm sure it's just like some short self indulgent thing" THEN GOT STABBED LIKE TWELVE TIMES OVER. INSTANT FOLLOW. OH MY GOD.
its actually IS self indulgent! just in the opposite direction! i want him to kiss me so badly but i also want him to hate me until its all he knows its a bit of trouble really
#im going with this not because i want to. but because i want to survive even if its horrible-#but i will also be complaining the whole way through.#alastor did one wrong thing that he thought would've been ok but turns out that of all thing is the-#invisible line he could never cross so oops he's hated forever and ever now nothing to do about that#/kbtalk#TYSM WAHHH WORDS LIKE THIS ARE THE REASON I WRITE SO MUCH#MEANS THE WORLD TO ME!!!! TY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1#and since whenever someone send me an ask like this i just start diving into my thoughts on al and shit-#i have great trouble processing my own worth and the fact other people think of me still makes me go ??#also a general sense of#like very obviously morally corrupt protag but not to the point of murder on their own accord#my favorite thing ever is also#thats why al never get his happy ending fully its always him biting#im very firm on my take of al already its just dif flavor of him#if i want to kiss him i wouldve just kiss him but what about the fun part where he agonized over the idea of loving something so much-#he can die for it but also refusing to lay his ego down for it#to love is to be vulnerable and frail and weak and to accept the unknowing. alastor hates all of the above. in this essay i will-

*sigh* something something the two-dimensionality of saeru's characterisation is a writing flaw, not a feature, and trying to pass it off as a feature whilst berating anyone who sees it as a flaw is uh. A Choice
#like we all know jin's writing isn't exactly stellar#kgpr got popular because of the characterisation of the Protagonists#but jin writes saeru poorly. I've never believed otherwise#he only really tried to do something interesting with the character in the manga... but saeru was always more of a symbol. which is Boring#but again#not the Main Point of kgpr so it's not a big deal#but that isn't to say that making saeru interesting weakens the narrative???#just that the story functions without him being overly complex and stuff#some of themes however are so Fucked by his character it's so sad#could write a whole essay about how shit the whole idea of monsterhood becomes when saeru is presented the way he is outside of the manga#that entire spiel seto has about âreal monsters in novel 8 is so eugh#I'd love to pretend that's just his perspective but it's so clearly word of god#I also feel like shutting down arguments in favour of deeper characterisation with âwell he's a metaphor for traumaâ#inadvertently oversimplifies trauma#I have more to say but I'm tiredddd#txt#not tagging and shit because I don't want people in my notes arguing with a wall#idc if you like your saeru simple I just hate the fact that people frame it as right/wrong thing#I think when people complain about complex saeru weakening the narrative they're more so annoyed that some fans#want to give him the same sort of complexity the protags have#like I promise you I'm not trying to turn him into a hero here lol I just think jin couldn't write him very well#and there are things to explore with the little things jin Did write#idk why the concept of even thinking about those things annoys some people sm#âhe's a murdererâ he's a narrative tool within a story. some guys in a corner brainrotting over him won't make Your blorbos less interestin#or make his actions widely justified/glorified#I Promise

blaming, or pinning geto and gojo's relationship as the whole reason the jujutsu kaisen world is fucked is so wild to me, because if anything their whole relationship shows how cursed that whole system was before hand and no matter what they did they wouldn't be able to escape it like they are victims of said world not the creators of it
#no one cares but this was on my mind because i saw someone say it#even if it was in like a positive light like how they relationship fucked everything up#no no no the world fucked their relationship up#like so many things had to happen for them to even get to that point#i could write a whole ass essay but who has the time for that LMAO#but i do think that pinning them for how things are is a huge misunderstanding of the series#like i always saw their arc and their whole relationship as just another way to showcase how screwed up the world was#like a lesson in a sense#also using the word relationship in the broad sense not in the romantic way#because i do not view them as romantic at all but that's another thing all together LMAO#anyways thank you for coming to my ted talk even if you don't care about any of this#b.txt
