As a LaiKabuMisu enjoyer, I never thought I'd need to see desperate Mithrun->Kabru before in my life, thank you so much for the food in these dark times.
desperate mithrun just makes me GIGGLE like the meme i made takes it a bit far for comedy's sake but it's like. this guy who only recently began to live for something else other than revenge and it's thanks to kabru and suddenly kabru dissapears his from life because he has a "job" . we've already seen mithrun go sulky when kabru doesn't side with him despite having valid reasons not to LOL (sfx: hmph)
Tumblr media
i truly can see the momentary disconnect (i doubt this lasts very long or at least doesn't manifest obviously. mithrun is a quiet and ultimately rational guy) where he's like "... i thought kabru was gonna stay with me though?" and not even necessarily in a romantic light (for starters anyway). just in the way that mithrun just counted on kabru's companionship, but when adult schedules and establishing a kingdom collide, i think kabru would also equally have a hard time giving up what he works very hard for (protecting humans/short-lived races and being able to help govern so that this is possible). i can absolutely see kabru accidentally neglecting his relationships for too long, and not realising until his party intervenes, or mithrun 'hmph's at him again and he's like '..what did i do.'
sorry for the essay . tldr: i would like to picture mithrun sulking :)

Hi GT,
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I absolutely love the recs you've given (you've introduced me to tomione, and I love it!) and I was wondering if it's possible to give you some recs in return? There are some books and fics that definitely have dramione / got vibes, and I was wondering if I could share them with you!
So glad you've enjoyed them! Feel free to rec me anything you want. I've read most of the classic recs in terms of fic and adjacent content (Cruel Prince et al), but I'll try anything that's well-written. My tastes run towards weird and/or audaciously creative stuff, and I can forgive a lot of weaknesses in plot on the grounds of (1) ambition or (2) character work. My turnoffs are instalove, protagonists who can't fail, and most Y/A (I'm not a hater, I swear, I just need characters who can say "fuck" when their leg gets chopped off.)
I'm also a fan of weird and fucked-up dynamics.(Wuthering Heights was my favorite book for a while, and as a teenager I wrote an AU in which the book ends on a long sex scene where Heathcliff fucks Cathy's ghost and then immediately gets murdered by Catherine 2.) Obviously, I am very normal.
#greenteacup asks#my beef with Y/A is mostly expressed in a dissonance between tone and content#LOVE the content. dystopia fantasy horror sex and blood — awesome. but question. why are they all saying 'darn'?#like in the vampire diaries where they'll watch people get eaten and then 2 episodes later be like 'omg SCHOOL DANCE'#(EDIT: actually in fairness. on the vampire diaries. it was mostly just caroline that did that. unfair example my apologies)#& i distinguish this critique from a common bitch-and-moan complaint about tv shows being interested in 'girly' things#like relationships and social standing. that is not my complaint. that shit is delicious. i will chomp that shit for days#my issue is that when the stakes oscillate wildly from episode to episode and i can't tell what the main thing is#like sorry. a story with murder in it is always going to be about murder. you can't make it not about murder#unfortunately! many have tried.#and in general i have difficulty reading about teenagers bc—#(she says having written 600k words about them OKAY I KNOW. i contain multitudes.)#because they're either mini-adults (preferred flavor. jude in the cruel prince nails this) or like leetol babies to me#and unless it's something like the hunger games where the Leetol Baby thing is part of the story#i'm like. hang on. you're 12 what are you doing here#percy jackson was hard for me to re-read as an adult for this reason#which is why they're enjoyable for teenagers! because as a teenager you DO feel like an adult#and you like reading books that treat you like one! nothing wrong with that! healthy even!#only then you get past the teenage years (mashallah) and you get stuff like twilight#where of COURSE bella doesn't think twice about 117 year old man falling in love with her#because he looks like a rich mysterious 17-year-old hottie#but you reread it later and it's like um well. that. could be explored a little more maybe.#i'm not even necessarily opposed to it. candidly. still team edward. i just think the dynamic should be more fucked up and juicy.#which Y/A authors are often reluctant to do. like. COWARDS! face the nasty consequences of your narrative decisions!#anyhow. you didn't ask for any of this. please give me your recs lovely person you seem very nice.

no but i need to scream into the void or i'll go mad. listen. kikyo wasn't a bitch. i don't think the way she was written did her any justice; it just makes her easy to hate. and don't get me wrong, this isn't about her relationship with inuyasha or kagome at all, i just want to talk about her as a character because she is one of the most complex of them and she needs to be looked at with more empathy.
i've said it before and i'll say it again: her whole thing is that she is tragedy personified. think about it. everything, and i mean every single thing that could have gone wrong in her life, HAS gone wrong. she had a difficult upbringing, having to raise her little sister and having to shoulder the burden of being the sole purifier of the shikon jewel (which constantly put her and her village under threat). she was never dealt an easy hand to begin with. then, she finds solace in love, tries her best to think of a way of unraveling herself from her duties to live a free life, while still caring for others selflessly: she took in onigumo, and he betrayed her. by pretending to be inuyasha, he had her think that her lover had betrayed her as well, and succumbed to wounds inflicted by him (or so she thought), while sealing him to the goshinboku.
the last wish she spoke of was to take the shikon jewel to the beyond with herself. later, kagome finds a way to actually destroy the jewel, which was what kikyo had intended to do but couldn't. in her heart, her last wish was to see inuyasha again. the jewel corrupts this wish and grants it in the most fucked up way possible.
her remains are robbed from her grave and she is brought back to life with NO agency on the matter, by someone who wanted only to exploit her powers. now, untethered from from her past duties, she is finally free to experience emotion. and that includes bad emotions. so anger, resentment, jealousy, contempt, loneliness, selfishness (and that's part of being human). every unfulfilled wish, the unfairness of it all. she spends the rest of the series navigating this undead existence, the duality of not belonging anywhere, constantly torn between doing what is right and what needs to be done to reach her goal, having no choice but to consume souls of recently departed girls to have the energy to fight her only fight (destroying naraku), all the while helping villagers and kids, and even the inugang, despite not wanting to align with their agenda at first. she contemplates sacrificing kohaku, yes, but ultimately her redemption is that she chose to save him instead of purifying the jewel in the end. she showed that she trusted the inugang to finish what she couldn't, and chose to spare another life, if possible (she says so herself in ch441)
Tumblr media
it is very difficult to relate to someone that doesn't give access to her vulnerable side very often. her and sango are the two characters who had it the hardest and were forced to make the most difficult decisions out of everyone. but we love sango, even when she chose to sacrifice rin, even when she contemplated killing kohaku then herself, because we know where sango's heart lies and how torn she is about all of it. kikyo, on the other hand, is stoic and hardened by her life (and also post-life), but ultimately her biggest trait was kindness. we don't get to see her cry and be like woe is me about it, something that could've made us more empathetic towards her like we are with sango.
my point is kikyo deserves to be looked at through kinder eyes. she is a complex character, and she requires a bit more analysis and compassion to actually see who she really is. my tragic girl

Is mark Antony the one who kneels or is he the one that people kneel before ?
both? like, he was Caesar’s dog, but he does not kneel before Caesar forever, and the proscriptions were a pretty clear warning light for how things would look under the new regime. Antony didn’t stop there, either: he was gunning for king of the world when he chose Cleopatra.
either way, knees or not, his teeth are sharp, look away from him at your own peril

Workforce Tuvok is my cringefail babygirl
#why are you a Vulcan suffering from dysphoria syndrome?? So you can get held down by other men???#I really want to know what 'humorous anecdotes' he had to share.....I love him so much#I love that without his Vulcan discipline he becomes even more clearly annoying <3<3 explaining a joke TO the guy who TOLD IT to him#+ laughing SUPER hard at someone else being 'humiliated'#Also Janeway looooves being romantically quirky in an old romance movie way and idk how else to describe it#Neelix: If I had a tarynian nickle for everytime I had to rehabilitate a friend who'd lost all their memories I'd have two nickles#which isn't a lot but-#st voyager memes#bea art tag#OH! Janeway seems like she's two seconds away from swinging herself around a lamp post in the rain with a dazzling smile on her face#Workforce Tuvok (and thus normal Tuvok) contains so many multitudes...he is SO friendly he is VERY annoying he is SCARED of needles#he is OFF putting and PUSHY and he is KIND <3#He seems like if I made a mistake he'd VERY loudly laugh and point it out but also help me correct it while telling a story about himself#Literally a CRIME that Tuvok and Neelix didn't interact in this ep they would've become buds#another crime is that Tuvok does nothing in the second half of the episode v_v not even a little 'ribbon scene' at the end#Janeway: Thank you so much Chakotay and only Chakotay for helping get us all out of there <3#Tuvok in the background: ..........................................................................................#the 'ribbon scene' would have been between him and Seven - she completed the research he started v_v

Do you like ASTV even though it’s copaganda
Yeah! I love the art, I love the characters, I love how much it loves comics. I love how it's expanding the horizons of comic book movies to catch up with actual comics in terms of style and creativity and diversity. It has a lot of other really good themes going for it about family and growing up and alienation and belonging.
It's also a superhero movie. Good luck finding any big superhero thing that isn't at least neutral about American law enforcement. I mean, 55 out of the last 80 years of comic history was written under the comics code, which explicitly required writers to make cops look good.

I was hoping we could all go "well, that one part is super biased, that sucks" and move on to more interesting pastures, but people seem really stuck on debating this point.

Who do you think was the Gladman Point skeleton? I’ve seen most sources place it as a toss up between Armitage and Gibson since I believe both of them had sailed with Peglar before and The Terror went with Bridgens, though I don’t believe the real life Bridgens was ever considered an option, but which of the them would you think is more likely?
I honestly don't know mate, I really don't!
-
Out of those two, my gut says Armitage.
He and Peglar, as you mention, knew one another having sailed together on HMS Gannet and to me, it seems more likely that they could have become and remained friends in some capacity, especially given that they seem to have been relatively close in age. Gibson also sailed with Peglar and did so more recently than Armitage but somehow I just have a harder time picturing Peglar becoming fast, firm friends with a man something like 10+ years his junior?
On other points Armitage and Gibson are on fairly level pegging (or Peglar-ing, as the case may be). Mentioned in the Papers, for example, are two locations that Peglar visited alongside one man but not the other - Venezuela with only Armitage, and the South Atlantic with only Gibson.
Armitage edges ahead by virtue of "All my art, Tom" but Gibson may well hold his own by the fact that he was literate whereas Armitage was still signing papers with an X as of 1845.
-
But then that brings me on to my final point: that, unless I'm really out of pocket and missing something glaringly obvious, there are certain assumptions that seem to often be made on this subject that I'm intrigued by and think are always worth interrogating further.
I've seen people confuse and conflate the Gladman Point skeleton with the second writer of the Peglar Papers themselves, for instance, and argue as a result that the skeleton could not be Armitage due to his illiteracy. That assumption - that the man who wrote the papers alongside Peglar is the same man that carried them on his person - doesn't sit entirely right with me...
There's also the matter of the scraps of clothing and other personal effects found with the skeleton - the cloth-covered buttons and neckerchief, comb and clothes brush all pointing to a Steward. I find it really interesting though that so much store has been placed in those artefacts and in the idea that Peglar would never ever have worn/possessed such things. Is it not possible that rather than, say, Armitage, taking Peglar's papers and carrying them forward, it could have been Peglar instead making use of his lost friend's clothing and carrying some of his stewardly paraphernalia as a keepsake?
It's a wild sort of thought to put out there, I realise, but those dudes travelled 3000 miles into the unknown and ended up fuckin' eating each other - who are we to suddenly place limits on what they would or wouldn't do?

someone way down here (loses someone dear)
@wtfanworkclassification stage 13: prompt -> nerve (165 words)
also on ao3.
it's the little things that wout notices.
when asked directly, jonas will swear up and down he isn't nervous - and he probably means it. but wout has five years' experience reading jonas vingegaard like a book, and what he sees doesn't always match what jonas says.
the little intake of breath before they take a descent. the way jonas adjusts his hat, his zipper, the hem of his jersey when he thinks no one is watching. more recently: the constant fiddling with his fingers. or - one finger in particular.
it's not like the relationship was ever a secret, in the peloton, just that jonas is private by nature and tadej- well. wout could say a thing or two about that, about late night phone calls and jonas's voice, clearly holding back tears. never thought i'd be something he'd be ashamed of, he'd said, and broken wout's heart clean in two.
on the presentation stage, tadej beams. beside wout, jonas fiddles with his bare ring finger.

at this point i think it would be fun to have a sudden tonal shift in succession and have shiv go full jason voorhees on everyone in her life. just full on friday the 13th everyone in the last episode, with a special fancy unique kill for each person designed to reflect their motifs. for example, she can sic a pack of feral dogs on greg. or stick tom into a garbage truck on fire and roll him down a hill till he explodes. just throwing some ideas out there.
