Thanks for the tags! And thank you to everyone for the Wednesday tag .. consider this my wip Wednesday as well 😅
So pretty much all of you guessed correctly in the last snippet of Rival Firefighters 🚒 in regards to what Bobby wanted to talk to Eddie about sooooo … here you go!
“Grab a seat Eddie, I’ll be right with you.”
Eddie sinks into the chair and begins twiddling his thumbs, eyes roaming around the office as he wait for Bobby to finish up. He’s been in the office before on his first day at the 118 which seems like so long ago now. He can’t believe it’s only been two months.
Bobby finishes writing and sets his pen down.
“I know you already have a station and that you’ve been there for a year now, but I saw how easily you fit in here, like you’ve been with us for years.” Bobby says, hands folded on the desk in front of him.
“You’re good people. Good firefighters.” Eddie internally cringes at himself but he doesn’t know what else to say.
An amused grin lifts the corner of Bobby’s mouth, eyes crinkling with laughter that he’s holding back. Eddie’s grateful.
“You’re good people too, Eddie. A good firefighter who encourages those around you to strive to be better. Not only at their jobs, but in all areas.”
Eddie’s not sure he agrees with that. The only person he thinks he’s made an impact on is — “You’re talking about Buck.”
“I’m talking about Buck.”
A fond smile crosses Bobby’s face, one Eddie recognises as he too also wears it whenever he’s talking about Chris. He learnt pretty early on in his friendship with Buck that he and his Captain were close, a kind of pseudo father son relationship. It’s nice to see it goes both ways and it’s not just all on Buck’s side.
“You bring out the best in each other and work together with an efficiency I’ve only seen in partners who have been together for months, years even.” Eddie knows he and Buck work well together but hearing it from Bobby is like getting an official tick of approval. “You’re good for him and this team, and I think we’re good for you. So if it’s something you’d be interested in, I’d like you to be a part of the 118 family. Permanently.” He picks up the form he was filling out when Eddie came in and hands it over to him.
Transfer Request. Everything is filled out, all Eddie needs to do is sign. He feels like he may be in shock. Just a little bit. Staying with the 118 is what he wants and it’s being offered up to him on a silver platter.
“You-you want me to stay?” Eddie asks in disbelief. This can’t be happening. It’s too good to be true.
“Yes, Eddie, I want you to stay. We all do.”

Prompt: Tommy and Buck celebrate one of their birthdays in the hospital.
This follows along with the fic I did about Tommy's 40th birthday, but they can be read separately.
The thing about Buck is he's stubborn. He's stubborn and a bit careless with himself.
Although Tommy's 40th birthday had been a huge success, even with party having to be canceled, Buck and Tommy spending the day alone together, and them both being surprised with a party a week later, Buck still wasn't satisfied.
“Your 41st will be absolutely perfect,” Buck had said one afternoon, four months before Tommy's actual birthday, “even if I have to bubble wrap the entire 118 and all their family members to make sure of it.”
Turns out, Buck was the only one who needed the bubble wrap.
The day of the party, Buck had convinced Tommy to go with Eddie to the gym so he could get things in order without any distractions.
“This needs to be just right and you don't know the right way to do what I'm doing,” Buck said, practically shoving Tommy out of the house.
“I don't know how to decorate for my own birthday party?” Tommy asked.
Eddie, from his spot at the door, simply shook his head. “Don't fight it, bud. You won't win.”
“I never have,” Tommy mumbled, earning him an eye roll from Buck before he got a goodbye kiss.
Tommy was only able to get out half of an “I love you” before Buck was shutting the door in their faces.
*****
Two hours later, Tommy returned home, Eddie walking up the sidewalk behind him. They had stayed at the gym longer than usual, even showered and changed there to take up extra time, but were still concerned it hadn't been enough.
“Evan?” Tommy spoke cautiously as he swung open the door. “Ev, can we come in?”
When there was no response, Tommy stepped inside. Eddie just a step behind. “Must be out back,” Eddie figured.
“Maybe.” Tommy dropped his keys on the table near the front door and called out to Buck again. “Evan, we're back! I made Eddie come in with me, so you can be mad at him if we're here too soon!”
“Hey!”
Tommy shrugged. “Well, it's my birthday.”
They moved further into the house, taking in the decorations and the smell of all kinds of food cooking. The overwhelming feeling of love that was coming over Tommy was quickly pushed away when he noticed their ladder in the living room, lying flat on the ground. His eyes were then directed toward the top of the ladder, where Buck was lying half under it.
“Oh my God!” Tommy exclaimed, running over to Buck with Eddie right beside him.
Little grunts escaped from Buck as Tommy moved the ladder off of him. Eddie looked him over while Tommy called 911.
“Can you hear me, Buck?” Eddie asked. “You hear me?”
“Mmm. Wha-”
“No, don't try to move,” Eddie told him, Tommy busy describing what happened to the dispatcher.
“Back... head hurts.”
“Your back and head hurts? Can you move your legs for me?”
Buck did, bending them at the knee before letting them drop back down.
“M'kay. Probably concussion. Back injury too, but I don't think it's severe.” Eddie got up, motioning for Tommy to hand the phone over. “I'll talk to them, you stay with him.”
Tommy was beside Buck in an instant, holding onto his hand as Buck looked at him with glassy eyes. “Is it o- okay?” he asked.
Tommy nodded, trying to hold back his own worried tears. “Yeah, you're okay. You're fine.”
Buck looked at him confused. “No. Not... Not me, th- the banner.” He pointed up to where a giant birthday banner was half hung, half torn, definitely not okay.
“It's great,” Tommy said, squeezing Buck's hand even tighter. “It looks great.”
*****
Tommy was able to ride in the ambulance with Buck, Eddie following in his own truck. When they got to the hospital, they wheeled Buck back, leaving Tommy with Eddie in the waiting room.
It was a long forty-five minutes, filled with Tommy calling everyone to both cancel the party and inform them of what happened, before Tommy was called in to see his fiancé.
He opened the door slowly, unsure of what he'd be walking into. Buck was sitting halfway up, staring at the ceiling, his fingers drumming impatiently on either side of the bed.
“Hey,” Tommy said softly. He smiled at the sight of Buck, hooked up only to a heart monitor.
Buck lifted his head a bit too quickly, wincing at the movement. “Tommy.” He looked sad. Tommy hated to see him sad.
“You okay?” Tommy moved closer and pulled a chair up by Buck's bed. He took his hand as he sat down.
“Concussion. Back will probably be black and blue for, uh, for a while, but... no major damage. Tommy, I-”
“I swear to God, Evan, if you apologize for this.”
“They're keeping me overnight, Tommy. Your party!”
“I don't know how many times I'll have to tell you that you, Evan, are all I need. I'll keep saying it until you believe it though.”
The words seemed to settle Buck a bit, until he remembered, “The food!” He gasped, eyes wide.
“Eddie turned everything off before he left. Everything's fine, Evan. Focus on you.”
“I'm supposed to be focusing on you,” he replied with a sigh.
Tommy smiled. “Well, there's always time for that later.”
They had a few more minutes to themselves before there was a knock on the door.
“Probably Eddie,” Tommy figured. “Come in!”
Sure enough, Eddie walked in. He was quickly followed by the rest of the 118, along with Maddie, and Karen. They carried in the trays of food that had been cooking at Tommy and Buck's place, along with the torn banner, and a cake.
Buck looked shocked to say the least, and Tommy couldn't help but once again feel overwhelmed by the love shown by this found family.
“You guys didn't have to do all this,” Tommy said. He got up and started making space for the food to be placed all around the room.
“But did the jalapeno poppers cook correctly? The recipe was very specific about the cooking time.”
Tommy shot him a look. “He means thank you.”
“Yes, yeah, of course that too, I- oh my God, the banner tore!”
“So,” Eddie started loudly, derailing Buck's train of thought, “there's only supposed to be like three visitors in here at a time,” he set the cake down on the tray table, “but apparently they make a special exception for the 118. Said we basically own the place anyway.”
After checking in with Buck and giving hugs to Tommy, they hung up the banner (only slightly crooked, but Buck let it go), and began passing out the food (where someone very much turned the oven off and then back on and the chicken was definitely dry. Again, Buck let it go... for now).
As the conversations continued around the room, Buck motioned Eddie over.
“Can you get my nurse for me? Her name's Carrie.”
“Something wrong?”
“No, no, nothing like that. I just need some paper and a pen. Want to start planning Tommy's 42nd birthday bash.”

Hi, how are you?
Could you make a request for Evan Buckley please.
The request would be based on the Big Time Rush song - Next step.
From Buck's perspective where he is discovering his feelings for his new "friend".
Until Athena says "if you don't do anything about it. Someone much smarter than you will come along and you'll see her holding hands with that person."
🙈 ✨😊 I love what you write. I send you many hugs from afar 🤗

summary: request
evan buckley x reader
a/n: i’m loving the btr songs love 😘 i’ve never done a pov for buck so this is my attempt ;)
every person in my life has left and taken their love with it. abby dropped me, completely changing locations and almost forgetting my heart and i back in los angeles. after tons of weight on my leg, aly just added more by breaking up with me. i kind of understand, sometimes a guy like me carries too much baggage in my line of work.
even growing up, my parents figured i could love myself. it was never my fault, but it felt like it was for years and i had to figure it out myself.
y/n knew what i went through. she understood my life in work, but also out of work. all of my feelings were vented to her for months. every last tear came out in front of her as she cried with me, or let me cry on her shoulder. i promised myself i wouldn’t fall for her, needing a friend to be with instead of someone with benefits.
i started to think the amount of pressure i put on myself caused me to crack. i knew that the day we met at that bar, it was bound to be more. the only thing that scared me was demolishing everything i’ve put in place for us. if she didn’t feel the same, then i would’ve ruined one of my best friendships i’ve ever had.
it’s been weeks since i’ve been forced to admire her in silence. it’s been weeks since i noticed her beautiful smile and her irresistible personality. it’s also been weeks that i haven’t done a single thing about it.
even when we hang out together, it feels like there’s a bubble between us, keeping me from loving her the way i want.
i want her to be loved as much as she deserves and it has to be me. whenever i look at her or get a text from her, my heart just swells up and the beat changes patterns. she makes me feel like i’m worth it, like i’m enough in this world.
but, the bubble grew. i couldn’t be with her as much anymore. i couldn’t sit there in pain knowing i can’t tell her everything i want to say to her. the only thing on my mind is y/n. she’s nothing but a breath of fresh air through the smoke. the way her mind works and results in an alluring human being fills me with pure bliss. there’s no denying that i was lost before falling for her, but she’s a flashlight.
the teasing and jokes from my team made it near unbearable, but i managed to push them to the side. eddie heard his own deal about her from me, and then spilt it all to the rest of the 118. now, every time y/n comes around, it’s like they’re anxiously waiting for a bomb to go off. it also horrifies me, knowing that one word from them could make or break this whole thing.
i’ve waited for y/n for so long, and she’s my puzzle piece. there are so many that don’t fit, but she’s the last one that makes a perfect puzzle.
i wish i was a superhero sometimes. i wish i had the ability to look into her mind and see if she loves me back. i only have my own mind, and i just have to go off that. but every night, i pray that she wants me just as bad.
the days had felt like they became longer, each shift, each time y/n and i hung out. i had to turn y/n down tonight because i couldn’t bear to listen to her and act like i wasn’t head over heels in love with her. so instead, i was dragged over to athena’s house for dinner with the rest of my friends. i couldn’t focus on anything anyone said to me. i was just thinking about y/n, feeling like shit that i cancelled on her, but also relieved that i didn’t have to face another night of torture.
“earth to buck,” chim chimes, shoving a forkful of food into his mouth. “what’s got you so lost?”
“oh, nothing,” i smile and tell him. “i just haven’t slept that much since last shift.”
“yeah, ok,” eddie chuckles and i shoot him a stare to kill. “what? it’s clear, man, what’s on your mind!”
“there is nothing on my mind!” i paint another fake grin on my face to try and change the conversation.
“am i missing something?” athena questions, coming to sit at the head of the table with a glass of wine in her hand.
“buck’s completely fallen over this girl and can’t find the guts to tell her,” hen gushes mockingly, looking up at the man through her glasses.
“oh, another!” athena teases. “tell me more.”
“it-“ i sigh. “it’s y/n.”
“you mean the one i met the other day? i could’ve guessed that.”
“what?” i ask.
“i saw it in your eyes the second that girl walked in. i haven’t seen you that enamored with someone in months and it even brought a smile to my face. so why don’t you say something?”
“because i don’t know if she feels the same way,” i complain, letting my arms fall on the table.
“you’ll be regretting it, though,” she tells me as i give her a look of confusion. “one day, she’ll find someone smarter than you. you’ll see her holding hands with him and not with you because he wasn’t afraid.”
the thought of y/n with another man makes me want to never leave the house again. if i ever saw someone holding her hand and it wasn’t mine, i can’t even predict how i’d act. no one gets me the way she does, and i’m afraid no one ever will. that’s why i’m afraid, i realized.
“you feel alive with her?” athena asks me.
“of course i do, more than i have with anyone else.”
“then what the hell are you waiting for?” she smirks, patting my shoulder. “get out of my house! go find that girl and don’t come back until you have her.”
i look around the table, getting glances from everyone and quick encouraging ‘go!’s. i push the seat out from under me, scoop my keys up in my hand and run out to my car. i’m not wasting another minute that this girl is not mine.
i repeat athena’s words in my head, picturing someone better than me with her. her smile, her laugh, while mine disappear without her. if her life begins with someone new, mine will end. i can’t back out now, and the words need to come out before i scare myself again.
i storm up y/n’s front steps, knocking on the door in a little melody so she knows that it’s me. i tap my foot on the ground nervously while i wait for her to pull open the door. the second she does, she says, “buck! hey-“
“i love you,” i say, breathless. “i can’t pretend that i’m not anymore because you are my person, and i can’t let someone else say it before me. you make me feel extraordinary, and i don’t know many people who can do that.”
i pause, taking a minute to collect myself as y/n stares into my eyes. i admire the color in her eyes, and even though she looks casual, she looks as pretty as ever.
“s-sorry,” i nervously say and laugh. “shit, that was a lot, but i couldn’t string myself along.” i look at her parted lips, her hair blowing in the light gusts of wind in the night. i take in every part of her and not one goes unloved by me.
“i’ve been falling for you for weeks,” she murmurs, making me step closer to her. “you’re one of the best people to come into my life. i’ve made some pretty bad choices, but you were the best one.”
all of her words touch my heart, wrapping herself around my finger. you never realize how fast someone can become your whole world until you truly want them to be. i walk closer to her again, putting my hand out as she makes contact with it.
“can i kiss you?” i ask as she nods, pulling me into her as she connects her lips with mine. her lips are soft and she tastes sweet. her comforting smell fills my nose as her lips mesh perfectly in mine. she took slow breaths, savoring every part of the kiss she could. i swear to god, i could climb every mountain and swim every ocean. just the feeling of being able to call her mine makes my heart jump. i pull myself away from her slowly, smiling on her lips before. i have a soft hold on her arms as she beams up at me from her doorstep.
“i knew we were bound to happen the day you stepped into that bar,” y/n speaks softly, her delicate voice and stirring sentence leaves me knowing she’s the one for me.

All 9-1-1 this month (except for a handful of others over at Pinboard)! A mix of gen and Buck/Eddie sorted from shortest to longest, because why not.
Tumblr media
Solid Ground by @kingreywrites (gen)
"Hey Buckaroo," she says conversationally, as if any of this is a common occurrence. "I'm glad to see you awake, but please, whatever you do, don't move, okay?" (Or, Hen is here to catch Buck when he falls. Literally.)
Tightly written rope rescue, with a warm Hen-Buck relationship and Hen being a badass.
flutter in the dovecote by KiaraSayre (gen + Buck/Eddie)
Buck, Eddie, and Bobby quarantine from a bird flu exposure, and everything's fine. Totally fine. They're handling it just fine.
This felt SOOOO MUCH like an actual (bottle) episode and now I dearly wish it was.
things you don't say reach me somehow anyway by @sibylsleaves (Buck/Eddie)
He writes CHRISTOPHER at the top of the page in capital letters. Underneath it goes BUCK. Then PEPA, CARLA, CHIM, HEN and so on until he has fifteen names listed out. Fifteen people to show his appreciation for. He starts with the easiest name first. or, Eddie tells the family he chose how much they mean to him. All of them except one.
So sweet and affecting, with plenty of bonus Fire Fam feels while Eddie's therapy homework leads him to figure out the true shape of Buck in his life.
Winter Prayer by @cal-daisies-and-briars (gen)
When a work conflict prevents Athena from accompanying Bobby to Minnesota for the ten year anniversary of his family dying, Buck and May offer to go instead. Over the course of the trip, they all learn more about each other, and Bobby faces his grief.
Quiet and occasionally devastating, with a truckload of soft found family dynamics along for the roadtrip.
piece by piece, you filled the holes that were burned in me by polish_amber / @the-amber-raven (gen)
Buck didn’t see Hen and Chimney exchanging knowing smirks and he was still muffling his groans against the table when they went over to the kitchen to refill their coffee mugs and had a hushed conversation: “Should we tell him that Bobby also asks for feedback?” “Nah,” Hen replied mischievously. “I kind of want to hear what he’ll come up with on the spot.” 5 times Bobby has feedback for Buck during his annual review, and the one time Buck gets a perfect score and has some feedback of his own.
Such a fun use of that bit of canon, and great snapshots of their changing dynamic across the years.
I'll Scrawl it on Every Wall I See by @letmetellyouaboutmyfeels (Buck/Eddie)
When Eddie joins the 118, he and Buck don't exactly hit it off on the right foot. Or continue to walk on the right foot. In fact they kind of can't stand each other. Good thing they each have a beloved anonymous pen pal to share their daily woes with, someone completely unlike their insufferable coworker. Or, in which Buck and Eddie love each other before they know each other, and know each other before they love each other.
Delightful epistolary identity porn! Very very classic set up but the execution is *chefkiss* perfect.
Evan Buckley & The Coma-Verse of Madness by @cal-daisies-and-briars (Buck/Eddie)
After being struck by lightning on a call, Buck experiences a plethora of alternate realities showing him different directions his life could have taken. Fighting hard to get home, Buck learns what, or who, is important to him in every lifetime.
Great varation on 6x11 (the coma-dream episode), with gorgeous characterization. Emotionally devastating at times, but also devastatingly romantic.

___________
Here's a snippet from Buck and Eddie's conversation with Chris.
___________
“Chris, we also spent a lot of time talking while we were there and… we have something we want to tell you.”
Chris looks back and forth between them and asks, “What is it?”
“Do you remember the conversation we had last year after I went back to the 118, when I said I wanted to be with Buck?”
“Yes.”
“Well… we’re in a relationship and while we were staying in Manhattan Beach, we decided we were ready to start telling everyone we’re together.”
Eddie watches as Chris questioningly raises his eyebrows, then he admits, “Chris, you’re the most important person in both of our lives and that’s why we’re telling you first. I don’t want you to think we were hiding this from you because we weren’t. It’s just… when we started dating two months ago, we thought it would be best if we shared some of our firsts… like our first date before we told anyone.”
Chris is quiet and he has a look on his face like he’s putting pieces to a puzzle together.
“Chris?” Buck asks.
When Chris looks at him, he says, “I’ll never do anything to hurt you or your dad and that’s one of the reasons why we decided to wait to tell you… because if we hadn’t worked out as a couple, we didn’t want you to be upset.”
Chris doesn’t say anything so Buck keeps talking. “Nothing is going to change because the three of us will continue to spend time together and me and you will still go to the zoo whenever you want. It’s just… uh, now me and your dad are in a relationship.”
How will Chris respond?

This series of FANON future speculation fanfics is being written on a continuous timeline that begins with the start of season 7 (if it were to start in September 2023). Each part ends at a specific point in Buck and Eddie’s relationship so the next part can begin with the ending of the previous part. Therefore, parts 1-6 should be read prior to reading part 7 and the series will continue in that manner until it’s complete.
Parts 1 - 8 are available on AO3

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love ❤️
ohhh i haven't done this since i only had 6 fics to choose from let's see how my answers have changed!
5. we're gonna need some land between our bodies
“Everything okay?” Eddie asks, rolling onto his side to face him. Buck nods. “Yeah, I just…I think we should talk. Before we do anything else.” All the warmth that has been filling Eddie’s body since he woke up suddenly chills. Buck must read Eddie’s expression, but he hastens to say, “No, no, a good talk! I think. I hope.” He gives him a shy little smile through his lashes. “I just…need to make sure we’re both on the same page. About what this means for…for us.” or, Buck and Eddie can't fuck yet (four times Buck and Eddie try to define the relationship and the one time they do)
call it recency bias but i feel like this turned out well and i had a lot of fun writing horny/frustrated buddie with minimal angst
4. from the love to the lightning
But when Buck tried to ask him if everything was okay with him, Eddie just said, “Me? Of course. Why wouldn’t it be?" And Buck really didn’t have an answer for that so he let it go. Because Eddie doesn’t hide that stuff from him, anymore. Not since the day Buck broke down his bedroom door and found him sobbing in a heap on the floor. So when Eddie says everything’s okay, Buck believes him. or, after the lightning strike, Buck recovers. Eddie doesn’t.
idk i just really liked how this turned out. and it's my first fic in the post-lightning era. and i love a good angsty love confession.
3. my heart's a secret (tell me you'll keep it)
Buck’s first mistake was coming to the bar. Actually, scratch that—his first mistake was falling hopelessly in love with his best friend, but he’s not sure he could’ve prevented that one. But the bar—that he could have avoided. And the first shot of tequila. And the second, and third, and fourth. His seventh mistake was watching Eddie get hit-on by a dead ringer for Chris Evans. His eighth—and arguably most egregious—mistake was talking to Chimney. Or, Buck tells Chimney a secret. This proves to be a mistake.
another one that was just a pure blast to write. Plus--Chimney!
2. making love to the flashes
When Buck had told them all the Hot Days, Smoldering Nights, Men of the LAFD Wall Calendar had selected him to represent the 118 for the month of July, Eddie hadn’t thought much of it. He’d congratulated him with a clap on the shoulder, laughed along with Hen, Chim, and Bobby’s good-natured teasing, and that had been that. Well, Eddie certainly isn’t laughing now. or, Buck gets his picture taken. Eddie loses his mind.
this turned out even better, somehow, than I planned. And was just the MOST fun to write.
maybe love won't let you down
Buck tells Eddie he’s in love with him. Eddie pines. or, five times eddie watches buck leave, and the one time he goes after him
my first fic for this fandom and STILL my fave. Unlikely to ever be unseated tbh, writing it was so magical and it's the entire reason I'm still hanging out in this fandom a year and a half later.

Your e/c eyes scanned the outward appearance of the first firehouse you’d worked at fresh out of the Academy. The place that had become a second home from the increased tension-filled house your parents still lived in. A place you had escaped as quickly as you could for a dream career. A career your parents hadn’t been proud of in the beginning, with the danger that came with being a firefighter paramedic.
“You the new recruit?”
Your eyes fell from the building to the male individual standing near the open bay the engine and ladder truck both used. The male in question must have joined the 118 after you transferred to the 155. The stranger towered at least six feet minimum with blue eyes and short blonde hair with the slightest wave.
“No-”
“Flint!” The excited voice of the only other female paramedic called out. You only saw dark navy before you were pretty much tackled.
Hen and Chimney had equally taken you under their wings when you initially joined as a rookie. You’d been the second female firefighter-paramedic at the 118 and the youngest by far. As if you’d summoned him, you felt the arms of Chimney sandwich you against Hen.
“Flint?” The stranger parroted, blinking his eyes at the rather unusual scene of Chimney and Hen wrapped around an unknown girl.
“What are you doing here?” Chimney questioned, stepping back. Hen scoured your entire form for any differences that had occurred.
“Y/N decided to come home,” Bobby spoke from a few feet behind the reunion with the beaming smile on his features. His lips pulled into a smile directed at the first recruit he’d taken on his first year at the 118.
“Bobby!” You grinned, meeting the father figure in the middle of the distance between you two. Bobby wrapped you up in his arms tightly, a certain lightness cocooning the Captain as he took in his friends.
“You’re back here?”
“Everything is squared back at home now, thankfully, and while I loved working with the 155, it wasn’t home. This will always be home.”
“Buck, this is Y/N Patterson. She worked her first two years with the 118 before transferring to the 155 in Los Feliz. Y/N, this is one of our newest members, Evan Buckley.” Bobby gestured towards the previously nameless firefighter.
“Who would leave the 118?” Buck questioned, unable to come up with a valid reason to leave the family at 118.
Buck’s opinion didn’t stand with his only workplace after successfully becoming a firefighter solely was the 118. Never had he worked in another firehouse. He’d been a fire marshall and volunteered his time in the Austin wildfire, but he always came home to the 118.
“Family issues.”

2018, Firehouse 118, Los Angeles
A fresh-faced, albeit dirty from sweat and soot, jumped down from the engine truck’s high steps. The synchronized slam of doors sounded from your colleagues and friends Hen and Chimney. All three individuals famished for the casserole Bobby had premade during the slow morning.
“Baked Mac n’ Cheese.” Tommy breathed from his position by the driver side. Tommy Kinard was a stoic man towering over six feet. He was always a gentle giant after you’d bonded after a hard call.
“Clean up, and I’ll have it in the oven. It’s Chimney’s time to make the salad and Flint’s turn to set the table.” Bobby spoke with barely a glance to the ground ahead of him.
Your Captain jogged towards the stairs, whereas his team made their way to the locker rooms for a well-deserved shower. You and Hen split away from Tommy and Chimney to the women’s locker room that had gotten an upgrade.
Well, before you joined the Academy, the locker room had been used as a glorified game room, all thanks to the misogynist Captain from hell. Hen often had over the years mentioned how lucky you got with Bobby being your first Captain.
“Chimney better not put those onions like he did last time.” You spoke from under the stream of warm water. Nothing beat the warmth of a shower near the end of your shift erasing the evidence of your job.
“Man needs to learn the complimentary salad to the main dish.” Hen piped up from across the shower room.
You and Hen had both showered and redressed in a fresh uniform in under five minutes, the dirty one placed in a laundry bag. You’d managed to beat the boys to the upstairs by a few seconds. Enough to set half of the able before Chimney began to making his salad of choice.
“Looks great, Cap.” Tommy complimented the gooey homemade pasta Bobby religious made every third Thursday. He alternated between pasta recipes with the odd new recipe every once in a while.
“What are you waiting for? The bell?” Bobby quipped to the unmoving bunch of hungry individuals. His words started the boisterous meal time preceding the end of shift.
“So, we’re halfway through dinner and Amber-” Your phone interrupted the disaster date Tommy had begun telling. He continued as soon as you waved him to go ahead while you took the call.
“Hello?” You breathed into the phone.
“Hi, sweetheart.” The warmth infused in your mom’s voice soothed the ruffled feathers from the call you’d come back from, “How are you?”
“I’m good! We just finished eating. My shift is almost over, and I’ll have to go straight to the store for groceries-”
“Y/N, we found him.”
The him was easy to figure out given your brother had run away from home three months prior with only his dreams in mind. You’d spent most of your off time, sometimes even during shift out on a call, to scan the environment for Luke. You became a regular in questioning hospitals and homeless shelters.
“Where was he?”
“His band had been about to play at some big venue last night.” Mom’s word choice concerned you. Her voice dripped with sadness instead of the typical disappointment and annoyance on anything to do with Sunset Curve.
“Mom, what’s going on?”
“A few nights ago, the boys got hotdogs-”
“Streetdogs.” You interrupted with evident anger in your tone at the mention of those death dogs Luke consumed. You can’t even give a number to how many times you had told him how unsanitary and dangerous the food is.
“Something was wrong with the food. They got ill fast. Alex and Reggie are being kept for observation but will be found with a few days of rest.”
“What about Luke?”
“He tried to call 911; he was weak and fell. Y/N, he hit his head. He’s in the ICU in a coma.” Emily Patterson’s voice cracked as soon as she acknowledged the current state of her youngest child.
The colours of the world dulled as soon as your mind clicked that Luke was in the hospital. Your little brother had put himself in danger all because he had a big dream. Your mind flashed through your life growing up with him.
You remembered talking to your mom’s growing bump when she was pregnant with Luke. You remembered five-year-old Luke unable to settle unless you sang to him. Your voice was nothing special, but it soothed the little boy when he had a nightmare. You could vividly recall teaching Luke how to play the guitar when he was thirteen; the brunette a complete natural at it.
“What’s his prognosis?”
“Too early to tell. The doctor is hoping Luke will be in a general room after tomorrow if the swelling goes down. I wanted you to know as soon as possible.”
“How’s Dad?”
Emily hesitated from her position by a hospital bed. Her brown eyes carefully scanning the male sleeping soundly in the bed.
“Mom?”
“Your father had a heart attack last night. That’s why I haven’t been able to tell you sooner. He’s currently sleeping, but he’ll have a barrage of tests later today-”
“I’ll be there as soon as my shif-”
“No. Don’t drop anything. I can keep you up.”
“Excuse my language, but there’s no way in hell I’m staying away from my family. I’ll take a few days off. I’ll see you in a couple hours.” Your thumb tapped the red circle on the bottom of your screen.
The 118 didn’t bother pretending they hadn’t been watching your form during your phone call. Bobby felt like something had drastically changed in a few minutes you’d been busy on the phone.
“Everything okay?” Bobby inquired from his position at the kitchen sink. His hands in the sudsy water to scrub the empty pan.
“My brother and my father are in hospital. I’m gonna need some days off.” You informed your boss with a look of utter defeat coating your expression.
Those few days transitioned to transferring to the closest firehouse to your childhood home and the hospital. The medical bills from both your brother and father had begun to overwhelm your mother with the current single source of income. Emily didn’t ask you for anything, but you started renting the home you’d bought for extra money.
It was a silent agreement that you paid rent as a cover to helping with the bills piling up.

Present Day, Firehouse 118
Buck followed behind the welcoming group to the girl that seemed larger than life. Buck was impressed by the sacrifice you’d made for the good of your family. You’d willingly given up the family of the 118. Buck didn’t know if he could do the same.
“Welcome back.” Hen cheered on her guidance to the heaven everyone called the kitchen. Your department issue duffle bag dropped out of the wall on the top level.
Your eyes zeroed in on the spread of your favourite foods prepared by the only person aware of your return. It was only one look of gratitude towards the father figure before everyone dug in.
A few changes had occurred since you’d last sat at this table. Tommy Kinard had left the 118 for the 217 shortly after your departure. He’d been replaced by the ready to impress Buck. One thing that hadn’t changed was the delicious food Bobby made.
Your eyes found the sole empty chair at the long table, “Didn’t you say the house took on two new recruits since I left?”
“Buck took your position when you left. We had a revolving door of firefighters before Buck permanently joined.” Chimney supplied with a mouth full of lettuce and grated carrot. Hen whacked his arm for his lack of manners.
“You’ll meet Eddie on the next shift. He took the day off. It’s his son’s first birthday since his mom died.” Bobby informed you with that pinched wrinkle between his eyebrows, “He joined after Tommy left.”
“Well, I can’t wait to meet the entire team.” You replied, looking past to the circular table behind Bobby’s spot. Sam and Ryan both waved happily upon catching sight of you back at your unspoken seat.
You listened intently as Hen shared the changes Denny had gone through in the time you’d been away. Chimney was ecstatic to point out the faint scar on his forehead.
“You had rebar go through your skull, and you’re completely fine?” You questioned, floored by the pure luck Chimney had.
“Oh, it was nasty. Went in from the back of the skull to the front.” Buck spoke enthusiastically, recounting the scene. Chimney deadpanned a look at his younger coworker, “Oh, sorry.”
“It’s like you never had it happen.”
“Doc was shocked at how positive the outcome and healing was. I was back at work within a month on light duty. I beat my record getting in my turnout gear.”
“And yet my little brother was comatose for two months.” You grumbled under your breath. None of the people could make out the words, but the grimace on your face was enough to show them it was personal.
In true 118 fashion, the bell rang throughout the firehouse with the disembodied voice declaring the type and location. Yoru e/c eyes found Buck climbing into the driver’s seat where Tommy had once commandeered. It was odd not having the man who’d became an older brother to you.
“How’re your parents?” Hen questioned, sitting diagonally from you. Her fingers repositioning the radio on her chest.
“Dad’s recovering pretty good. Mom’s started attending her knitting club again.”
Buck’s eyes raised to the rearview mirror to meet yours in interest, “What happened?”
“Uh...my dad had a heart attack a couple years ago. He took a long time to recover with the further stress that caused it.” You piped up, understanding the news would come out at some point, “My little brother was in an accident that left him in a coma. Life was just as messy after he woke up.”
“He’s okay?” Chimney questioned, “I know we’ve never met them, but it really gutted you.”
“Well, physically, he’s fine, but emotionally he’s upset. He was in a band, and when he came out of the coma, he found out some devastating news.” You continued to explain, but unfortunately, or maybe, fortunately, you’d come to the scene.
It was a little known place most teenagers discovered as a hang out spot just on the edge between your county and the next. The location was the infamous spot of cliff jumping; you knew because this was something you’d recklessly done in high school.
“He’s over here!” A blonde male of average height called from the edge of the cliff. His blue eyes were bright even from this distance, matching the detailing on his swim trunks.
Surrounding the edge with the boy was a group of teenagers his age, all in different versions of swimsuits. You found the scared brown eyes of a beautiful girl you vaguely knew from the few shows of Sunset Curve you had watched. Her dark blonde hair plaited out of her face. Her face clicked as Carrie Wilson, Bobby’s sister or cousin.
You jogged towards the edge of the cliff to look over. It was easily between fifteen to twenty feet from the edge of the cliff to the water. You recognized Hen crouching by your side, looking at what you were looking at.
On the rocks was a prone body of a teenage male with bruises already forming on his face from where you could see. His thick shoulder-length hair laid still half in the ponytail and around his head.
“Head trauma.” You murmured to Hen, scanning from a distance, “I can’t tell much from this height and angle.”
“Either a broken tibia or fibula. Spinal injury is definitely a concern.”
“Okay, his name is Willie Young. He’s eighteen years old. His sister Kayla was dared to jump off by doing some kind of flip. Willie took her dare and didn’t jump far enough or tripped over a rock.” Bobby listed having been talking with the group of teenagers all shook up.
“I can rappel-” Buck began to speak before you cut him off firmly.
“It would take too long, and the angle is difficult. Nobody rappels down it; the cliff isn’t stable enough. It crumbles pretty easy, and the unofficial name of this cliff is Devil’s Dive.” Your eyes found Carrie’s tear-filled once and the utter devastation in who you pegged as Kayla.
“How do you know that?”
“Because I’ve jumped off this cliff for years as a teenager. You’re looking at the resident champion of self reckless endangerment at Devil’s Dive.”
Hen, Chimney and Bobby each stared, shocked at your revelation of stupid teenager decisions.
“Then how are we gonna get down there,” Buck questioned, staring at the unconscious teenager lying on the rocks.
“Easy, I can jump from here into the water and climb onto the rocks to where Willie is. I have the experience of how and where to jump safely.” You spoke to your Captain with complete confidence in your abilities, “You can lower down the kit, radio and backboard by a rope. There’s a mansion beyond the trees that you can ask to borrow a boat from the owner. He’s eccentric and questionable but nice enough.”
Bobby nodded his head to your plan. You unbuttoned your uniform shirt to strip down to the department t-shirt with the emblem on your chest and across your back. You kept the boots and emptied your pockets of anything. The butterflies fluttered in your stomach at the height of the cliff you hadn’t jumped from in years.
“I’ll jump where-”
“Excuse me?” You scoffed at Buck’s assumption he could follow you.
“You’ll need another pair of hands to roll him on the backboard. I don’t have anyone waiting for me at home. This is kinda what I do. Bobby cleared it already.” Buck shrugged with a half-smirk on his handsome face.
With a roll of your eyes, you quickly gave Buck a rundown on how to jump correctly before you tossed yourself off the cliff. The cold water momentarily shocked your system as soon you submerged under the water. You swam to the surface before swimming towards the rocks. Willie hadn’t moved an inch.
“Whoa! That was so cool!” Buck cheered once he’d appeared on the surface of the water, “No wonder you used to do that!”
His excitement both annoyed and amused you, “Eh. I was just an idiot kid who thought they were invincible.”
The two firefighters lifted themselves onto the rock formation, where blood stained the rock. While Buck retrieved the backboard and essentials from the rope, your hands moved across Willie’s body, checking for breaks. You caught the c-collar Buck tossed without looking. You quickly but gently put the collar on Willie.
“Hi, Willie. My name is Y/N, and I’m a paramedic. I’m gonna check you over for injuries.” You informed the teenager closely. You’d only just opened his eyes to flash a light on them, “Buck let Bobby know Willie’s pupils are reactive to light and the same size.”
“Got it!” Buck called out from the open medkit, “I’ll splint his leg.”
“W-what happened?” Willie wheezed sluggishly. His brown eyes were unfocused.
“You got hurt trying to jump off the cliff. You’re in good hands, Willie. I’m a paramedic with the Los Angeles Fire Department. This is my coworker Buck.”
“Kayla?”
“Perfectly safe, but you did give her a scare. Willie, can you feel this?” Buck questioned, gently touching his right foot. Buck and you both gave a sigh of relief as Willie confirmed he felt it.
“Okay, we’re gonna roll you on to the backboard. On three: one, two, three.” You counted before rolling Willie on his side with Buck. Willie’s cry echoed around the surrounding as you settled him on the board.
“Need a ride?” Chimney asked as a very nice boat floated towards the three people on the rocks. Hen and Bobby helped load Willie onto the boat, “Mr. Covington agreed to let us use the boat if we don’t get blood on the seats.”
“Can you call my boyfriend?” Willie sluggishly asked when he was loaded into the ambulance on the cliff. Kayla sliding into the seat in the back of the ambulance with their items.
“Alex is meeting us at the hospital.” Kayla told her older brother, “You absolute idiot! You should have just let me jump!”
“And let you be in the back of the ambulance? Dad would kill me if I had let you do it.” Willie scoffed. Their conversation was silent as Chimney and Buck closed the back doors of the ambulance.
Bobby, Buck and you climbed into the fire truck to follow the ambulance to the closest hospital. Hen and Chimney rolled the gurney to the doors with Kayla hot on their heels. You’d just turned to head back to the truck when you saw three teens loitering near the entrance.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” You grumbled, marching away from Bobby and Buck to the teen who was supposed to be in class.
Luke had been forced into private tutoring to catch up to his friends in his grades, meaning every afternoon. The watch on your wrist confirmed Luke was definitely supposed to be with his tutor at the community centre.
“Luke!” You shouted, stomping right up to the wide-eyed teen.
Luke’s Adam’s apple bobbed in his throat as his older intimidating sister caught him like his hand was in the cookie jar. You didn’t give Reggie or Alex a second look while you gripped Luke’s ear to tug him away.
“Ow!” Luke whined from the angle you dragged him at.
“What the hell are you doing across the city? You’re supposed to be in your session that our parents are paying a great deal for.” You snapped, crossing your arms in your wet t-shirt.
“We need every chance we can to-”
“Make it big in the industry.” You parroted the past discussions on Luke’s dream as a band, “Do you remember how I got mom and dad off your back? An agreement that you finish high school on time. Not dropping out.”
“So many musicians have dropped out! Green Day’s frontman dropped out his senior year to focus on the band. Several others like Elton John and Kurt Cobain!” Luke enthused, gesturing with his hand to emphasize his words.
“Luke.” You warned, “It’s either catch by with a tutor with some time dedicated to your band, or it’s a military school.”
Luke’s hazel eyes minimally widened, “They would-”
Your stoic expression stayed the same as the energetic seventeen-year-old bounced in his spot across from you.
“There’s only so much I can do before you lose everything. I know you feel anxious after what all happened, but music isn’t going anywhere.” You reached to squeeze Luke’s hand in yours, “So, I’ll clear it with my boss to have you ride the bus to the station. You’ll have your tutor sessions with my supervision, so I know you’re attending.”
“Y/N!” Bobby called from next to the firetruck, “We gotta go.”
“I’m guessing the Alex that Willie is dating your best friend?” You questioned with one raised eyebrow. Luke nodded in response, “Let mom know you had to be there for Alex. She’ll let skipping your session go this once.”
“Thanks!” Luke chimed, lunging to hug you. Your mouth barely opened before he was racing towards a jittery Alex and a grinning Reggie.
Reggie lifted his arm to wave with his flushed cheeks a darker red colour. You found Reggie’s crush on you to be absolutely adorable. He was a friendly kid.
“He looks good for a kid who was in a coma not long ago.” Hen breathed as the teenager entered the ER with his best friends beside him.
“Oh, he healed quickly. He was crushed after he fully recovered from his head injury.”
“That was your brother?” Buck inquired, and he was just as focused on your features as he had since he first met you.
“Yeah! He was in a coma for ten months when he was sixteen. He’s spent the last two years catching on on school to graduate with his friends. Well hopefully. He’s dead set on dropping out.” You heavily sighed, leaning your temple on the glass window, “He was supposed to be at a tutoring session. I’ll be chaperoning to make sure he goes.”
“If you need to have them at the station, send me a schedule, and I’ll make it work. Luke’s just as much family as you are.”
The rest of the shift was smooth sailing as Buck followed you around with the sole purpose of getting to know you. The friendship came naturally to the two of you. He didn’t hold back with you like he did with others. Fridays off became hangouts that varied from just Buck and you to spend it with Eddie and Christopher.
Everyone could see Buck had developed feelings for you and vice versa. Unlike the man Buck used to be, he was cautious. He wanted to do this right. And Buck did. With the help of Christopher, he asked you out.

Months Later
Buck’s eyes fluttered open in the dim lighting of your new home’s bedroom he often found himself in. Before, you had alternated staying at his apartment or yours before a significant change happened. Luke moved in to finish his senior year with the help of your tutoring, as agreed with your parents. That led to you giving up your former home, the one that coincidentally Buck’s sister Maddie had rented from you.
“Luke! You better be awake!” Your voice came from the main floor of the home. Your voice alone seduced the firefight to leave the warm sheets.
His bare feet pattered down the hardwood floor stairs into the kitchen coated in all different kinds of breakfast food. Waffles to imported maple syrup to bacon spread across the counter.
“Morning,” Buck grumbled, stepping up behind you to tug you against his chest.
Unlike Buck’s softer footsteps, your little brother tore down the stairs like a stampede of elephants. Luke wore a vintage band shirt modified sleeveless; you’d be getting a voicemail about dress code violations. The chains hanging off his black jeans.
“You have to hurry, Lu. Buck and I can’t be late. He needs to get to his apart-”
“I don’t see why he doesn’t just move in. He’s here almost every night. He helps buy groceries.” Luke’s hazel eyes stared at the plate he towered food on.
Buck raised one eyebrow in response, “You just moved in. You should be settled before we make-”
“Dude. Your lease is up in like a month; just move in already. No feathers will be ruffled. Besides, the band’s taking off now that Nick got his dad Ryan to check our music out.” Luke sprouted with a beaming smile at the good news his new band received.
After Luke had recovered from that coma, he’d woken up in a world where Alex, Reggie and Bobby, no Trevor, now continued the band. Then when Alex and Reggie couldn’t go on, the rhythm guitarist betrayed Luke. He stole every song he could get his hands on and proved successful.
“Ryan Evans, right? His sister’s some bigshot on Broadway? Sharpay, right?” You questioned recalling in the early 2000s the success of Sharpay and Ryan in some kind of Disney films based on them.
“You’re about to be the sister and brother-in-law of a certified rockstar.” Luke’s attempt at smirking made him look like a chipmunk with full cheeks of food, “I don’t need a ride. Alex’s picking me up.”
“Straight to school, Luke. You’ve got two weeks left before you can leave that behind.” Buck pointed his coffee cup in the direction of the passionate musician. Luke returned a smile of acknowledgement.
The kitchen was quiet as Luke shoved as much food in his mouth in such little time while you watched. In a flash, he’d stuck his dishes in the dishwasher before sprinting out to the van beeping continuously.
“Think we can have you moved in by tomorrow? Your one-bedroom place will be a little cramped for five people.” You simply spoke as you rinsed your coffee cup out. You could hear the wheels in Buck’s brain turning as he thought.
“Five people?”
“Yeah. Luke, Albert, me, you and baby Buckley.”
The entire home went completely still as the announcement bled into the house you’d made a home. One hand resting against the smoothness of your belly. That hand covered by the calloused one of Buck’s. His blue eyes gleaming in utter adoration and excitement.
“Baby Buckley?” Buck marvelled, turning you to face him with tears running down your cheeks, “You’re pregnant?”
“I am. I guess we’re giving Maddie’s daughter a cousin.” You grinned, wrapping your arms around his neck.
“Now I’m obligated to see your parents regularly, and I still grimace at the first introduction.” Buck winced, recalling the foot in mouth syndrome he’d developed.
Buck had never been as nervous as in this moment. Not when he had to tell his parents the first time he got kicked out of college. Or when his teenage self sat beside one of his flings waiting for the results of a pregnancy test. Not even on his first date with Abby.
“You’ll be fine.” You soothed the anxious man standing by your side on the doorstep of your childhood home. The door opened, revealing Luke standing with a grimace, “Oh Mom, made you wear that.”
Luke had been stuffed into one of the only long-sleeved shirts he owned by your mother. It was a magenta maroon hued corduroy shirt and set off his chocolate hair perfectly. Apparently, your mother hadn’t been able to get him into a pair of pants that weren’t skinny, black or ripped.
“We’re meeting your boyfriend, not the damn Pope-”
“You wouldn’t be wearing that if the Pope was involved.” You retorted, stepping to tug the younger Patterson into your arms. The only thing you adored about your little brother was he never denied a hug. Physical touch is his love language, so he never went through a phase.
“Lucas, don’t let them freeze on the front porch!” Emily shouted from within the Patterson home. Luke rolled his eyes at his mother’s request.
“Luke, this is my boyfriend, Evan Buckley. Buck, this is my not so little brother Luke.” You swiftly introduced the most important males in your life.
Luke and Buck got along better than any previous partner you’d brought home. He got along with your parents really well. Even when he slightly embarrassed himself as the time came to go home, whether it was his place or yours. He kissed your mother’s cheek and shook hands with your father.
“No offence, but thank you for having a heart attack and a coma. If you hadn’t, I’m sure I would have never met Y/N.”
Luke snickered at Buck’s odd choice of words, as did your parents. A part of Buck dreaded the next time he’d see your parents.
The gentle press of lips against your cheek pulled you from your thoughts of the first family dinner. Despite the issues between Luke and your parents, they were great people and parents; Buck had felt like he finally fit in. Even with that awkward thankful he gave your brother and dad, he was family the minute Mitch and Emily saw the mutual looks.
“How are we gonna do this?”
“Well, as the pregnant one, I’ll carry the little Bean until it’s time for them to enter the world. Then we’ll-”
“I get that but with our jobs?”
You felt guilty at the dread of not getting to do what you love, but you were excited, “I’ll keep working as a paramedic. I’ll stay away from fires, and then I’ll go on mat leave. We’ll make this work, Buck.”
Buck leaned down to rest his forehead against yours with his eyes closed, envisioning how life was about to change. Buck adored children. He had loved Christopher from the moment he’d first met him. Buck himself was a kid at heart.
“I didn’t think I could fall more in love, but you continue to surprise me each time,” Buck murmured with that gorgeous smile that utterly melted your heart from the first time you saw it. Back when you tried to deny any feelings beyond friendship.
“We’re so lucky to have you, Evan Buckley.” You breathed as you leaned up to kiss him with as much passion as you could. Although it was mostly clashing of teeth with the matching wide grins on your face.
“This little girl is gonna be a heartbreaker but no boyfriends or girlfriends until they’re thirty.” Buck declared, tugging you into his arms. His blue eyes twinkling in the natural lighting.
“It could be a boy.”
“Or maybe neither. Boy, girl or non-binary, I’ll love them just as much.” Buck spoke once more.
Tumblr media
Gideon Buckley was born in the early morning to the pride of his parents and extended family. He was a healthy solid 8 pounds with sparse dark blonde hair and the trademark grey-blue newborn eyes. You everyone but Buck and your surprise Gideon wasn’t alone. Grace Buckley followed her older twin brother eight minutes later.
You rested against the propped up pillows spent from the exhausting hours of labour, but it was worth it. The two tiny babies snuggled beneath the swaddling blanket concealing your bare chest. Skin to skin contact was absolutely the best part of being a parent.
“Did you steal a baby?” Chim joked upon entering the hospital room with Maddie in tow. Right behind them were your parents and Luke.
“I’d like you to meet our twins Gideon and Grace Buckley. Surprise!” Buck quietly cheered in the nearly silent room. Buck’s curated newly parents playlist gently playing in the background.
Mitch and Emily came closer to look at the little loves they proudly got to claim as their first grandchildren. Emily’s heart melted upon hearing Gracie coo in her sleep. Grace and Gideon’s fist pressed against each other.
“Congratulations.” Maddie breathed, bending to catch a peek at the twins’ faces.
“Luke. Would you like to meet your goddaughter and godson?” You questioned the nervous musician. The nineteen-year-old tiptoed his way to the hospital bed.
“I’m both their godfather?” Luke choked as soon as Buck gently transferred Gideon onto his uncle’s chest.
“There’s no one else in the world I’d choose to help guide them in the right direction. You always found your way back onto the right path. You’ll do the same for them.” Buck answered with Gracie nestled on his chest.
Buck was the first to hold them followed by you and then their godfather Luke.
Gid and Gracie, although unseen, had been in Luke’s graduation pictures and watched as Julie and the Phantoms signed with a record label. Where Gid was, Luke wasn’t far beyond; the special bond melted everyone. Likewise with Gracie and Alex.
Gid overall was a happy baby compared to Grace. Loved visiting the firehouse. Loved the people working with their father and previously their mother. For the entire first year of Gideon and Grace’s life, you stayed at home with the utter support of Buck.
“First day back.” Hen spoke from beside you on the bench in the women’s change room. As a fellow mother, she’d been watching your behaviour.
“I miss them. I feel guilty that I abandoned them-”
“Okay, your feelings are valid, but you aren’t abandoning Gideon or Grace. You’re teaching them that you can be a great mom while also being a badass firefighter. I was the same when I went back to work after we got Denny.”
“Do you ever wish you could be a stay at home mom?”
“I love Denny with my entire heart, but I couldn’t do that. I was meant to be a paramedic firefighter as much as Denny’s mother. Besides, I can see Maddie pushing in the double stroller.”
Your head snapped to see your sister in law beaming with the double stroller carrying Gideon and Grace. Maddie’s daughter sitting on the seat made for a toddler. Maddie and Chimney had come to a decision for Maddie to work part-time.
Hen watched as you bounded out of the changeroom in uniform to scoop the twins into your arms. In a split second, Buck was down the stairs cooing at the absolute loves of his life. His partner and two children.
Buck would forever be grateful for finding his way to the 118, where he found his true family. A place of acceptance, love, trust and loyalty. Buck found his place in the world, and that was beside you.

fundamental pieces
buddie (1.6k) (read it on AO3)
Eddie’s knees hit the ground with a dull thud that he doesn’t feel.
He doesn’t feel anything, actually. He can’t. Because if he feels something, he’s going to feel everything, and if he feels everything, he’s going to come apart at the seams.
He can’t look away from the smoldering pile of rubble in front of him. Dimly, he’s aware that there are other people around, people who could be hurt, people who might need his help. He’s frozen, though. Stuck on his knees, might as well be fossilized in amber.
Buck.
Buck is—
Fuck, Eddie can’t even bring himself to think it. The house was standing and now it’s not. The ground was stable and then it wasn’t. Buck was—
And now he’s not.
The flashing lights from the fire engine cast strange moving shadows across the debris. Eddie tracks each one of them, unable to stop himself. It can’t have been more than a minute — the dust from the collapse still lingers heavily in the air, and no one’s started shouting orders yet — but time is stretching and folding in on itself and Eddie’s pretty sure he’s going to be stuck in this moment for the rest of his life.
And then, his radio crackles to life.
“Buckley to 118, I could use a little help down here.”
Eddie can’t help the wounded noise that falls from his lips. His entire body sags, a marionette with strings cut.
He allows himself a count of three, then stumbles to his feet. Buck needs him. He shoves the past few minutes in a box he knows he’ll never want to open again. Buck needs him.
The next half hour is a blur filled with structural engineers and thermal cameras and half hearted jokes over the radio. Buck’s okay, just trapped in a pocket beneath one of the house’s sturdier beams.
It’s maddening, knowing that Buck is less than a hundred yards away and not being able to get to him. Eddie feels trapped in his own skin. He wants to say to hell with it and just start digging, but the engineers say that any wrong move could collapse the bubble that Buck’s in. So he clenches his jaw and waits.
His radio crackles again. “Hey Eddie?”
Eddie fumbles to press the button down so he can respond. “Buck? What’s wrong?” Eddie can hear the tension in his own voice, barely covering the panic that lies beneath.
“I’m fine,” Buck answers immediately. “I just… never mind. It’s stupid.”
“Tell me what it is,” Eddie says, as soft as he can manage right now.
There’s a long pause. “Can you talk to me?” Even over the radio, Buck’s voice sounds small.
Eddie lets out a breath. “Yeah, Buck, I can do that. What do you want to talk about?”
“What, uh, what’s Christopher doing at school this week?”
Eddie knows damn well Buck already knows the answer to that question, but he indulges it anyway, telling Buck about the history fair coming up and the diorama Chris wants to build.
“I’m pretty sure he’s going to conscript you for that one,” Eddie chuckles. It’s a little forced, but it’s the best he can do under the circumstances.
“Well someone’s got to help him with the papier-mâché, and we both know it’s not going to be you,” Buck says.
“Hey!” Eddie says, mock-affronted. “I helped on the last one! With the solar system?”
“Eds, you popped the balloon before the sun was dry. It looked like a weird yellow raisin.” The amusement in Buck’s voice is good to hear.
He’s about to defend himself when Bobby claps him on the shoulder. “We’re moving in,” he says. “Let Buck know.”
Eddie swallows. “Buck? Still there?” It’s a stupid question. Nothing’s changed in the last 30 seconds, but waiting for Buck’s response still feels like standing on a precipice.
“Nowhere else to go,” Buck confirms.
“We’re on our way to you,” Eddie says roughly.
“Roger,” Buck replies. “What do you need me to do?”
“Just hang tight and keep your helmet on straight,” Bobby says.
“You got it, Cap.”
Digging through the rubble is delicate, and frankly terrifying, work. They’ve got airbags holding up the points that the engineers identified as load bearing, but every time something in the structure shifts, Eddie’s breath catches. Eventually, though, they’ve got a path cleared right up to where Buck should be.
“Nash to Buckley,” Bobby says into his radio.
“I read you, Cap.”
“We’re right on top of you. Keep your face covered and don’t try to help.”
Eddie swears he can hear the cheeky smile Buck must be wearing when he says, “No help from me, got it.”
It’s another agonizing ten minutes, then finally, finally, Eddie’s got one of Buck’s hands clasped in his, and he’s pulling him from the house’s crumbled remains.
“Shit,” Buck says, surveying the damage. “You must’ve thought—“
Eddie unintentionally tightens his grip on Buck’s hand. It’s the opposite of what he should be doing, but he can’t let go. Buck squeezes back.
“I’m fine, Eds,” he says softly.
And Eddie knows, he does, but he’s not going to believe it until he’s checked every inch of him over himself.
“Thank you,” Buck says, out of the blue.
It’s a few hours later, and they’re back at the station. As intense as the call had been, Buck had gotten out of it without a scrape, so they’re all still on duty.
“For what?” Eddie asks.
Everyone else is asleep, so it’s just the two of them sprawled out on the loft’s couch. There’s some nature documentary playing on the TV, but Eddie’s fairly certain neither of them is watching it.
“For distracting me. Earlier, I mean. I, uh. It helped.”
Eddie gives up his pretense of paying attention to the hyenas on the screen and turns to look at Buck.
“I’m just glad you’re okay,” he whispers. It gives away far too much, but he’s so far past the point of worrying about that.
Buck swallows heavily, like he’s heard everything that Eddie didn’t mean to reveal with those five words. He shifts until he’s pressed against Eddie, ankle to shoulder.
“I was scared,” Buck admits, toying with the sleeve of the LAFD hoodie he’s wearing. Eddie wants to take his hand all over again.
“I thought—“ Eddie can’t bring himself to finish the sentence. “I was scared, too,” he says instead.
Buck looks at him. He bites his lower lip and frowns. “I just kept thinking that I didn’t want to tell you over the radio,” he sighs finally.
“Tell me what?” Eddie asks.
Buck looks away again. He’s starting to hunch in on himself the way he does when he’s feeling vulnerable. Eddie gives into his earlier urge and takes Buck’s hand in his own.
“Whatever it is,” Eddie says softly, “you can tell me. I promise.”
Buck’s eyes shoot back up to Eddie’s, searching. Whatever he’s looking for, he must find.
“I love you,” he says simply.
He can’t mean it the way Eddie wants him to. The way Eddie’s wanted him to for months, years probably. He squeezes Buck’s hand tighter for want of words.
“I’m in love with you,” Buck clarifies. “I just… couldn’t not tell you.” His expression is almost resigned.
Eddie’s frozen all over again, but this time he let’s himself feel it all. Because Buck’s okay. Buck’s sitting right in front of him. Buck loves him.
“Evan,” Eddie breathes, unable to keep the name from slipping between his lips.
The resignation on Buck’s face shifts to hope, and he holds Eddie’s gaze. Lit by the blue glow of the television, he’s never looked more beautiful.
Eddie can’t wait another second. He ducks forward and brushes a feather light kiss across Buck’s lips. His intention is to lean back, to assess Buck’s reaction, but then Buck makes a strangled noise and surges forward, capturing Eddie’s mouth with his own.
The hand that isn’t otherwise occupied lifts of its own accord to cup Buck’s jaw. Buck’s free hand fists in the material of Eddie’s uniform. It’s like no kiss Eddie’s experienced before, fire and passion underlined by aching tenderness, and over all too soon.
Eddie leans his forehead against Buck’s breathing harshly.
“Fuck, you have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that,” Buck pants.
“I think I might,” Eddie says.
Buck pulls back, just far enough to look Eddie in the eye. “You…”
Eddie wants to laugh. Even after that, of course Buck’s still not sure. Eddie’s not one for speeches, but Buck… Buck deserves to know exactly what he means to him. “Earlier, when I thought… it was like the whole world stopped. And I didn’t want it to start again, because I was terrified it’d be starting without you. I can’t do any of this without you. I don’t want to. I’ve been in love with you for so long it’s a fundamental part of who I am.”
It’s Buck’s turn to freeze.
“I love you,” Eddie says. He squeezes Buck’s hand.
The soft pressure must break him out of his stupor, because he lunges at Eddie again, this time throwing his arms around Eddie’s neck and burying his face in his shoulder. Eddie wraps his arms around Buck’s waist and buries his nose in Buck’s hair.
“I love you,” he whispers again, just because he can.
Bobby finds them the next morning, tangled together on the couch and snoring softly. He smiles, and resolves to make breakfast quietly.

you drew stars around my scars
for @grcywvren and @nymika-arts
buck/eddie, 1.5k
warning: depictions of violence and blood
When Eddie was six years old, he fell off of his bike for the first time.
His knees had hit the pavement hard and fast, scraping themselves raw and stinging with bitter regret at having ever removed the training wheels. He remembers looking down at his previously unblemished skin as the blood ran down his leg and painted it red, and for a moment, being too stunned to even cry as he was forced to face the fact that the world he'd felt so close to conquering as he sailed down the street, pumping those pedals, was not quite as kind and malleable as he'd thought.
It was only a split second, of course, before his juvenile brain had fixated on the much less profound fact that he was hurt and bleeding, and he'd cried for his mother who came rushing out into the street. He remembers the way she fretted -cleaning the dirt and loose stones out of the wound and patching him up carefully, all the while muttering that she really hopes this doesn't leave a mark.
He wonders what that past version of his mother would think of the person standing in the mirror in front of him now, notches all over his skin from all the ways that same harsh world has tried to fight against him since.
He finds himself idly tracing the scar on his wrist as he stares at his reflection, trailing soft fingertips over the rough flesh and remembering the way the bullet had whizzed through the air; cut through the darkness and struck right into the bone. He's curious to know if his mother ever registered the mark. Or if she'd one day become so desensitized to his pain, after years and years of it, that every time he came home with a few new ones she didn't even bat an eye. He wonders how many it took to get to that point.
His hands move next to the white line along his left palm, pale and stark against the rest of his skin. This is one he'd given himself, years ago, trying to cut open a wounded soldier's shirt and slicing his own hand open instead. It bled heavily, running out of the cut in crimson streaks, but he'd barely even registered the pain, bandaging it up quickly and returning to his work. No time to fuss.
Finally, he moves his fingers up to his forearm. To the still-healing cut that he'd acquired on a call just a few weeks ago, when a piece of debris had fallen from the ceiling and ripped through the fabric of his jacket, slicing into him and causing warm blood to trickle down through the sleeve. Hen and Chimney had patched him up easily, and he hadn't thought much of it after that.
There are others; marks all along his body, from cuts and scrapes and wounds from the war, some of which even he can't remember the stories to. It's almost funny, really, in contrast to the way his six-year-old self had sat and stared at his injury, that he's now got such a collection he can hardly differentiate between them.
He supposes he can't blame his mother for becoming familiar with the violence against him when he himself has done the same.
Eddie's not sure how long he stands there, contemplating his past as vague, distant memories fill the back of his mind. But he's broken from his thoughts when the half-open bedroom door swings towards the wall, making room for the man standing in the doorway. He glances at Buck over his shoulder, trying to shake all thoughts of pain from his head and come back to the present.
In an attempt to do so, he asks, "Is Christopher asleep?"
Buck smiles, the upturn of his lips laced with affection. "Out like a light," he says.
Eddie can't help but smile back slightly at the image it creates in his mind. His son, fast asleep just down the hall. Safe in this home, right where he's supposed to be.
"I remember the days when he wouldn't even let you read him a story."
Buck laughs, filling the room with something a bit warmer than the cold swirl of memories that Eddie had been caught up in. "Well, that was before he found out that I can do the funny voices."
"How times have changed," Eddie muses.
"Indeed," Buck hums as he steps further into the room and closes the door behind him, looking pleased at the thought that time has worked kindly in his favour. To bring him closer into this family; to make him a part of it.
It strikes Eddie, sometimes, just how different his life is from what it was less than a year ago. That just ten months previously, the way Buck is moving to stand behind him in the mirror, curling playful fingers around the hem of his shirt, was nothing more than a distant wish. A desire kept hidden beneath layers of apprehension.
But somewhere along the line, that changed. At a certain point he drew himself out so thin with his longing that everyone could see right through him, until he had no choice but to tear his emotions from where they'd bubbled to the surface and pinned themselves to his sleeve and lay them out bare, before Buck caught a good glimpse of his transparency.
His desperate confessions had been met with Buck's own against his lips, and here he stands now, gazing at the reflection of their joint shape, pressed together to spell out their future in a simple truth; this is their life now, and this is their life for as long as they can keep it safe.
It makes him strangely grateful for everything that came before it. For every scrape and bruise and outpouring of blood that made him who he is; led him to Los Angeles, to the 118, to the person standing behind him. And he knows it's not right to feel thankful for his own pain, but there's a part of him that thinks he wouldn't be him without it.
Buck's fingers move upwards, pulling the t-shirt up and over his head, displaying more and more of that damaged skin as he goes, and Eddie can't help the way his breath catches ever so slightly in his throat when he catches sight of his newest scar.
The mark on his shoulder -still red and raised from where the bullet made its impact, with a matching one on the back from the way it had ripped right through him. Buck's gaze follows his in the mirror and lands in the same spot, concern in his eyes melting into understanding as he recognizes Eddie's train of thought. A small sigh escapes Buck's lips as he remarks, "Almost a year now, huh?"
Eddie nods soundlessly, images of blood and flashing sirens and frantic eyes suddenly filling his mind as he stares at the circle of rough skin. This is one that he could never forget the story to; could never forget the way he fell, the way hot searing pain had rippled through his body, the way Buck had crawled beneath the truck, rushed towards him and-
-touched him. Just like he's doing now. But this time, as Buck's fingertips move up to trace the now-healed wound, there's no pressure to his touch. No desperate fear trying to keep Eddie's life force inside. No, the way he touches him now is almost reverent. Like he too is remembering the day that this was the most sensitive part of Eddie's body, and is now in awe that the skin is still warm beneath his hands, blood pumping through his veins exactly where it's supposed to be.
And here's the thing; Eddie is used to violence. To war and wounds and horrors beyond most people's comprehension. To events that leave a mark in more ways than one. Hell, there was a time when he knew the cacophonous sound of spraying bullets better than he knew his own son's voice.
What he's not used to is this; the gentle caress in the aftermath. The whisper of another person's skin ghosting along the site of impact like it's something fascinating. Something to be worshipped. As though the scar is more than ugly, garish skin; it's a mark of survival, of a life given a second chance.
"You're a wonder, you know," he hears himself say, as Buck tilts his head down to press a kiss to his shoulder.
Buck hums. "I'm just glad you're here, that's all."
Eddie forces back the lump in his throat at the simple adoration lacing the words. Swallows back the emotion threatening to spill from his lips and says, "Me too."
Buck smiles at him in the mirror. Eddie turns in the circle of his arms and presses a kiss to those upturned lips, overwhelmed with gratitude at whatever force had given them the opportunity to have this life together.
Buck's hands move from his shoulder, down to his hands and squeeze as he suggests, "Let's go to bed."
And so they curl up together in the same space they've spent countless nights, completely entwined and secure in each other's embrace. Safe behind these walls, away from all things that hurt and scar.

Hi, can I ask for: routine kisses where the other person presents their cheek/forehead for the hello/goodbye kiss without even looking up from what they’re doing
Thank you!
Apologies for being the slowest writer to grace this earth, and for this being super short to boot, but I hope you enjoy it.
Autopilot
It was safe to say that no one at the 118 had been particularly shocked at how quickly their relationship had moved once they had actually got it moving. They still had things to figure out, and weekly therapy sessions and conversations to have, but they’re firefighters, and so the likelihood is, that was never going to change. If they were going to do it together, they may as well do it together. That was the easy part really. The transition between best friends to lovers – partners. Not all of it, but given how domestic their friendship had already been, considering how Christopher already saw Buck as part of the family and a parental figure – it wasn’t a tectonic shift. It wasn’t exactly groundbreaking.
The fact that Buck had pretty much moved in with Eddie three months in? Not a shock. There were no accusations of them taking things too quickly because, well, they weren’t. Nothing had changed, except maybe the intimacy aspect, and that wasn’t talking about sex, that was something that they still working through, not all the way there yet, but new gazes that passed between them, touches that felt like more, kisses, both private and heated, and general displays of affection that don’t really offend anyone (except Christopher, who found the whole ordeal of a kiss on the cheek positively, over-dramatically, traumatizing.)
Like the ones that tended to happen between them if one was leaving the house without the other. When Buck decides to go for a run before breakfast; he fills his water bottle and heads out, meeting a sleep-ruffled Eddie in the hall, threads his fingers through the stuck-up mass of hair and smacks a loud, wet kiss on his cheek before he slips his running shoes on and leaves. Or when Eddie picks up an extra shift and leaves Buck at home with Christopher, his hand will slide over the back of Bucks head to tilt him down and plant a kiss on his forehead.
Of course, it wasn’t something they took to work, difficult though it may be. The eye rolls and coos from Hen would be easy to deal with, even the teasing and threats of non-grievous harm from Chimney. It just wasn’t professional. 118 get togethers were fair game, but not in the loft and not on calls. Simple.
Or so it seems.
Because sometimes, routine overrides the brain. Buck can’t count the number of times people talk about driving to work and they’re still half asleep. It’s just routine. They wake up, drink coffee, have a shower, brush their teeth, get dressed and then get in a car. Start the engine, put it in drive, take the same route they’ve taken everyday for however many years, sit in the same traffic with some of the same faces every morning. By the middle of the day, they don’t remember having done it. Autopilot.
He and Eddie have their own little autopilot now. One leaves, the other gets a kiss. It’s easy as that. So, on the day that Eddie can’t get a session with Frank on a day he’s not working, or over the weekend, he takes a half day from work. They get back from a fairly routine call, and have time to loiter, some doing odd jobs, Bobby cooking. Eddie changes out of his uniform and gets ready to leave. Runs up the stairs to say his farewells since they won’t be in the next day, and on his way behind the chair where Buck is sitting reading, Buck tilts his head back on to the back rest, far enough that he can still see Eddie. Eddie bends, places a hand under his chin and kisses his forehead before running off down the stairs.
Buck smiles and goes back to his book, not thinking anything of it until he notices the eerie silence around him and the telling feeling that he’s being watched. He knows the minute he lifts his head, he’s gonna get it.

The 5 times Chim bolted in a pole slide, and the one time he stayed strong. LOL. Or something along these lines. ALL THE POLE SLIDING PLEASE.
...you’re welcome
1.
He realizes he’s babbling on and on about the Buckley family secret when it’s too late to try and recover and convince his coworkers he’s talking about something other than his girlfriend’s family’s complicated mess. A secret dead brother, really? And he’s just not supposed to tell? Okay then, he’ll do his best for Maddie because he understands why she hasn’t told Buck about it but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s terrible at keeping secrets.
“I-I have to go,” he stammers out, realizing that the situation cannot be salvaged.
Really, taking the stairs would have made more sense than going down the pole, but well, he wasn’t exactly thinking clearly at that point.
2.
The next time it happens, it’s a deliberate choice to use the fire pole because he wants out of that situation as quickly as possible.
“I mean, Hen, what’s the point of going to medical school at this point in your life?”
“At this point in my life? Are you calling me old, Buck? Really, do women stop having value after age 30, is that what you’re saying?”
“No, I just-- Chimney, help me out here.”
“You make your bed, you lay in it, Buckaroo,” he shakes his head, before running towards the pole to yeet himself the fuck out of there.
3.
He’s not even paying attention this time, is the thing. He’s reading a baby book and trying not to panic about how complicated newborn living breathing things are when all the sudden a glass is being slammed down on the table. He snaps his head up, wondering who is mad at who this time. His guess is Hen being mad at Buck again but this time, it’s Eddie who’s pissed.
But he’s right about the someone being angry at Buck thing.
“You friended Ana on Facebook, Buck? And started messaging her? You haven’t even met her in person yet!”
“Hey! I can’t see her in person because of COVID, and I have to get to know my best friend’s girlfriend somehow. She seems great, by the way. Absolutely lovely, and she shared a great muffin recipe with me.”
“You know, you could have just asked to facetime her with me at work one day, not gone behind my back and interrogated her like you were Athena and she was accused of the bank heist this time.”
“Interrogation is a strong word, Eddie. You can just tell a lot about a person by what time they eat dinner in the evening.”
Chimney can’t help the snort of laughter that erupts from him but clearly, Eddie isn’t a fan of it.
“You think this is funny, Chim?”
“I, uh, no?”
“Then why are you laughing?”
And down the pole again he goes.
4.
The fourth time it happens, it almost turns out horribly.
He’s lying on the couch, more than a little out of it as he waits for Maddie to come bring him home from work because God knows he couldn’t drive himself in this state. He’s a little uh, high, from the wonderful painkiller injection Hen had given him after he dislocated his ankle and she had to shove it back into place.
Oh earthquake aftershocks, you’re a little bitch.
“You having fun there?” Hen laughs, ruffling his hair, “maybe I gave you a little too much of the good stuff given that you’ve been staring at the wall for twenty minutes now.”
“Its’a pretty wall, Hen.”
“Yeah, definitely too much,” Bobby laughs and the rest of his coworkers quickly join in.
“Mean!” Chimney whines, trying to clap his hands together but completely missing, “workplace bullying.”
“No one’s bullying you, Chim,” Hen cackles, “just observing. So you just relax and enjoy--”
“Bullying!” he protests, bursting into tears from the drugs as he stumbles to his feet and then hobbles towards the pole.
“No, no, no, Chim no!” Buck protests, getting up from his seat and sprinting towards Chimney but his drugged up friend manages to get there just in the nick of time.
There’s a horrified silence upstairs before the sound of two feet clumsily hitting the ground.
“M’alive, guys!”
5.
Chimney, bags under his eyes after being up every two hours with his two month hold, shows Eddie a picture of Jee-Yun.
“Wow, she’s adorable. When are you and Maddie going to have the next one?”
Yep, right down the fire pole.
+1.
“Hey, Chim? Can we talk?”
The voice of his girlfriend breaks him out of his reverie and he’s up on his feet immediately. She sounds nervous and he hadn’t been expecting her, so a million worst case scenarios immediately fill his mind.
“What’s wrong? Are you okay? Is Jee-Yun okay?”
“Oh, no, please don’t freak out,” she sighs, “we’re both-- neither of us are sick or hurt. It’s okay, Howie. Here, hold her.”
Confused but compliant, he dutifully takes their nine month old from her arms and bounces her gently.
“Maddie, what’s going on? I know you said not to freak out but you seem freaked out and it’s freaking me out.”
“Can we go somewhere more private?”
“Sure, but you’re not breaking up with me, right? Because if you’re breaking up with me then--”
“I’m not breaking up with you,” she shakes her head, “it’s okay, just--”
“What? Are you pregnant again, Mads?” Buck asks, completely joking but both of them pick up on the look on Maddie’s face and realize that, in fact, Buck has hit the nail on the head.
“You’re pregnant?” he whispers, clutching at Jee-Yun anxiously because she’s perfect and maybe the more the merrier but he and Maddie hadn’t been planning to have another baby.
“I am,” she nods, “I-I didn’t mean to tell you in front of Buck but he... he guessed it so.”
He has to admit, with the rest of the 118 silently watching this all play out with amused looks on their faces, he looks over at the pole for a quick second. But he decides against it because one, Jee-Yun is in his arms, and two, Maddie might actually break up with him if he does.
“Come on,” he sighs, putting a hand on her back, “let’s go talk away from the peanut gallery.”
He takes the stairs instead.

Chapter: 1/?
When Bobby Nash received a call from the fire chief, he expected another suspension. It’s the only thing that comes to his mind now when the highest-ranking member of the department personally asked to talk to him. To be fair, the 118 had its fair share of suspension and Bobby is driving to the fire chief office, wondering which one of his team is going to be benched again. None of them deserve it, but life keeps throwing them curveballs so Bobby is just expecting the next one. They are all doing fine lately, at least at work. Sure, half of them still need some serious therapy to get through their trauma, but Bobby trusts them to deal with it. He is about to enter the office when he sees a small red-haired woman talking to the chief and laughing with him. Bobby can barely see her face, but he recognized her voice and he is annoyed already. She is finally leaving the office and the chief waves at Bobby to enter.
“You remember Taylor Kelly?” the chief asks. Bobby is surprised to see him smiling this way. He knows he should be relieved because it probably means that no one is getting fired, but a reporter is never good news for him.
“It’s kind of hard to forget her and her cameras,” Bobby says. He is trying his best to keep his tone respectful while addressing his superior.
“Her news report about the 118 did great for public relations”, he explains. “The department had to cut some parts they didn’t like, but otherwise it helped with public opinion.”
“Do you want her to make another video? Because I know you liked her work but I can’t say I was happy having her around” Bobby says.
“You won’t have to worry about Taylor” the chief replies and Bobby is relieved for a moment. But then he opens his mouth again and the relief is short-lived. “You will be going to Austin,” he says and Bobby’s jaw drops. “Miss Kelly had a great idea to improve public opinion. You will swap places with another captain for a month. We already cleared everything with the other department. They are sending their captain on Monday” he adds, leaving no room for argument.
“Chief, with all due respect” Bobby tries.
“Captain Nash, your station has not the best records at the moment.” he cuts.  “Between your suspension and Mr. Buckley’s lawsuit, you are not in our good grace. Take this as a chance to redeem yourself in the eyes of the public and in my eyes too,” he says firmly. “This is happening whether you like it or not.”
“My family is here, you can’t uproot me without my permission.”
“It’s only for a month. So I suggest you start packing because you are leaving in a few days. Unless you are willing to add insubordination to your list.”
Bobby is about to walk out of the office when the chief adds “It’s going to be a good experience for you and your team. Don’t see this as a punishment, use it as an opportunity to learn a thing or two. I’m sure AFD will be happy to have you there.”
Taylor is still in the hallway when Bobby leaves the office, but he ignores her and goes back to the station.
He explains the situation to the team as soon as he arrives. They are all around the table, waiting for a breakfast that wasn’t cooked since Bobby wasn’t there to feed them. Eddie is the first to react to the news.
“Wait, Taylor Kelly is coming back here?” he says much to everyone’s surprise.
“Well, I didn’t think that would be the part that bothers you” Bobby teases. “I’m glad you are not too sad about having another captain here.”
“Of course I’m sad, Cap,” Eddie adds.
“I’m not excited about this either, but we don’t have much of a choice. The chief sent me the contracts, the cameras won’t be here all the time. They just want to produce an entertaining piece about how a different captain can change things in a station but I think it’s mostly an excuse for Taylor to step up her game”.
“It looks like she already did Cap”, Buck says. “She was always ambitious and that’s one of the things I learned to respect about her. She went from traffic reports to news reports to producing her own show.”
Buck complimenting the woman that went Buck 1.0 on him and leaving him in a parking lot was not something Bobby thought he’d ever seen but he was even more surprised by the murdering look on Eddie’s face.
“What do we know about the new cap?” Hen asks.
“I’m going to Austin, so I think that’s where the new guy is coming from.” Bobby answers. He sits on the table next to them and handles all of them the contracts to sign. He didn’t really read them in the chief office before being practically forced to sign his copy. But now that he has his in his hand and a hot-barely-drinkable coffee in the other he reads a paragraph that makes him want to spit his coffee. “What the hell?” he screams to himself but everyone raises their head from their reading to look at their captain.
“Everything’s okay Cap? Buck asks, a little worried. The youngest member didn’t even bother to grab his own contract and was reading from Eddie’s as he was close enough to see it. Both his hands were filled with food anyway.
“The Captain of the 118 would live at the Strand’s house for the duration of the contract” Bobby reads, voice higher than he would have hoped.
“Does this mean you will have to live with his wife or something?” Chimney asks, his curiosity is picked and he is dying to know more about what already appears to be a month of chaos and fun.
“His boy,” Bobby says. “It says that the Captain from the 126 added a clause in the contract saying that he didn’t want his son to be alone and that he wanted me to keep an eye on him. I’m going to babysit a teenager?” Bobby assumes. “Thank God the firehouse is the only place I’m exchanging with him because I wouldn’t want to come home to Athena to tell her that some stranger would live under her roof.”
The rest of the shift goes back without any major surprise. Every time they come back to the house in between calls, Chimney is on his laptop, googling things and laughing, Eddie is even closer to Buck, questioning him about Taylor Kelly even as they step into the showers after a call that left them covered in ashes and sweat and Hen is talking to Bobby while keeping an eyes on the boys, already guessing how insufferable the three of them will be on Monday.
When Bobby comes home after a long, mostly boring, shift, he feels anxiety building in his stomach at the idea of having to break the news to his wife and her kids. He waits for the diner to be over to start talking.
“So, the Chief called me into his office this morning,” he says first.
“Everything’s okay? Nothing to do with Buck I hope? I swear, this boy has been giving me more gray hair in 3 years than my kids in a lifetime.”
“Buck’s fine. His ex girlfriend, though.” Bobby starts.
“Abby? She was a sweet woman, until she broke our boy’s heart.”
“Taylor Kelly.”
“The news reporter?”
“It’s Taylor Kelly, the TV productor now. She pitched an idea to the Chief and he signed for it with a big smile.”
“What idea? She’s not gonna film you again, is she?” Athena says in the same annoyed tone than Bobby.
“I like her” May says before her brother hits her arm for her to stop talking. “What? She’s good. She did some very interesting news pieces and she gave a lecture to my school to encourage young students to go to college.”
“So what did that angel of a woman did for my husband to look so pissed?”
“She’s producing a show called the Swap.”
“I’ve seen an episode” the young woman cuts again. “She had doctors trade hospitals to show how leadership can affect a place. It was great! One of them was super uptight and-” she stopped talking when her eyes met Bobby’s. “Oh shit.”
“Langage!” Athena says. “Is there something I’m missing?”
“She’s doing a firefighter version. And I guess I’m the very uptight one.”
Of all the reactions he imagined all day, the only one he didn’t imagine was the sound of his wife bursting into laughter.
“Sorry” she says, covering her mouth to stop the loud noize coming out of it. “Sorry, it’s not funny.”
“It’s really not” Bobby says.
“I’m just trying to picture you in that show, with a new team. And oh god, that poor captain is not ready to handle the 118.”
“Hey, they’re a great team.”
“They’re your kids, Bobby. You love them and I do too. They are great at their jobs.”
“They’re the best,” Bobby corrects.
“But they are also a bunch of living disasters. How long has it been since one of them ended up in the hospital? I hope the new cap doesn’t like his hair too much, because he’s gonna end up with a head full of gray hair within the first week.”
“I was hoping a little more empathy for your poor husband who’s gonna live in Texas for a month with the son’s captain as a roommate.”
“You’ll do great, honey. I’m not worried about you.”
Meanwhile, a thousand miles away.
“Are you serious, dad? Please tell me you’re kidding me.” TK whines. He places his mug on the sink and walks toward Owen who is waiting for him by the door to go to work.
“It will be a nice change, TK. Plus, the department told me I didn’t really have a choice since they needed the money to pay for the House renovation I ordered. Apparently I went a little over the budget.”
“You spend half the budget on that fancy coffee maker Judd can’t even get to work without your help.”
“Stop complaining and move your ass to the car or we’ll be late. I hope you’ll complain less when the new cap is here cause he’ll be the one driving your whining ass to work.”
“He what?”
So maybe Owen forgot to mention that part. It was the only thing that had him hesitate before saying yes, he promised he wouldn’t leave his son alone after what happened in New York. He tried to negotiate for his son to come with him but the productors insisted only the captain could come, so he only managed to have the other captain to live with his son at all time. He also knew TK wasn’t alone anymore, he saw the way Carlos looked at him the day he came picking him up at the station. He knows he will be fine but he’s not taking any chances when it comes to his boy safety.
When they both arrive at the station, Mateo has a hot cup of coffee ready for Owen and TK goes to the kitchen to make himself his own cup. Judd is fighting with the machine and holds his hands up in defeat.
“I give up. This thing hates me, I swear.”
“Someone is in a mood” Marjan laughs from her spot in the kitchen where she’s cooking something for breakfast.
“You’re about to be in a mood when you hear the cap’s latest idea.” TK comments. He’s about to drink the coffee he just poured himself when he sees Judd’s puppy eyes. “Did Buttercup teach you that trick? I’m not rubbing your belly if that’s what you want.” The dog comes to his favorite firefighter and TK gives his coffee to Judd. “Fine, you can have mine, but only because my hands will be busy doing this.” He says while starting petting the dog.
“So, what’s that idea of yours, cap?” Paul asks.
“First, it’s not my idea, it’s the department.” Owen says. “Second, don’t listen to my grumpy son, it will be fun.”
“What would be fun?” Judd asks, definitely not convinced but his captain enthusiastic tone.
“Go ahead, tell them cap, we’ll see if they are all as thrilled as I am” TK says.
“I’m going to Los Angeles for a month.”
“For a vacation or something?” Marjan asks.
“For a damn TV show,” TK cuts.
“A what?” they all ask pretty much at the same time.
“It’s a captain exchange. I will go to  a new station for a month and their captain will come here.”
“Maybe we’ll get a captain that knows how to read a book” Michelle comments, thinking about the first time they met. He didn’t realise that she had arrived. She has a wide smile on her face and Owen counts this as a sign that she’s enjoying the idea, maybe a little too much. “So, who’s that new captain I’m gonna share the station with?”
“Robert Nash, from Los Angeles’ station 118” Owen replies and Judd and Paul share a look. They are definitely taking note of that guy name to google for info later. “The cameras would be here a few hours a day so you need to sign those contracts.”
“And if we refuse?” Judd asks.
“From what I heard, it’s not like we have much of a choice. But I’m sure you’ll love the new guy.”
“I’m sure we will. But what if we want to keep him at the end of the month?” Michelle teases.
“Then I guess I’ll stay in LA, with a team that respects and loves me.”
“We love you,” Mateo says.
“Speak for yourself, probie. I might call Robert Dad within the first shift.” TK jokes.
“Remember everything you’ll do can be caught on camera. I’ll know everything. And I know at least one person will miss me.” Owen says. He walks toward Mateo who’s smiling proudly and puts his hand on his shoulder, before bending to stroke Buttercup “You’re my favorite teammate, buddy.” He says to the dog. The team laughs at the disappointed looks on the youngest member’s face before hearing the alarm.
“Do we know anything about the other firehouse?” Paul asks when they climbed into the truck.
“We? We don’t. But I do. They gave me a file with the resume of each member of the 118.”
“Come on, Cap. You’re not gonna share that with us?” His son says.
“Nop. That’s what you get from not liking my ideas, son.”
Paul and Judd exchange another look and TK knows that they are plotting something. It’s not like Owen is the best at hiding secrets and they all know that file will be on the second drawer of his desk. They won’t even need a distraction to get it since their captain will spend half an hour in the mirror when they’ll get back to the station after this call.
Marjan is driving toward the emergency they are responding to when all the phones except Owen’s start buzzing.
Paul sent a bunch of pictures in their group chat. Owen knows this chat exists and assumes he’s the subject of half the jokes and memes they are sending but he loves that his team gets along so well so he really doesn’t care about it. This time, it’s not him they are laughing at. Paul just sent them pictures and infos about Robert Nash. TK tries not to smile when he reads the texts.

chapter 5 / 5 - “you deserve what you are given” - 3.6k
in which Eddie has a good day, has a bad day, sees a familiar face, and tries not to blow up an ambulance. not necessarily in that order.
it’s all done! my first ever standalone, prompt-free fic! I hope you all at least tolerated it as much as I did. I also would like to say—please, if you’re seeing things that look messy or need to be touched up, you’re welcome to let me know. I'm sure I'm going to go over it and re-edit a million times over the next week.
read on AO3
Eddie knew that things were going to be different the moment he slapped his alarm the next morning, because for the first time in months, he actually turned his alarm off. He didn’t lie in bed and ignore it, he didn’t hit snooze until he could get the energy to see the day, he turned it off, he got up, and he started to dress. He couldn’t remember the last time he had greeted a Monday on time for an early morning workout, but the few miles he was able to get in on the treadmill was nothing compared to the look of happiness on his son’s face when he got to join him and Carla for breakfast—instead of running out the door, a granola bar lodged in his mouth. He literally felt like he just woke up on the right side of the bed this morning; judging by the way that Chris lit up, and Carla rose her brows in surprise, his change in attitude was already being noticed.
Even if Carla was good enough not to comment on it.
Honestly, Eddie didn’t know what was going on himself, but he wasn’t going to complain. A day ago, he had almost started to cry at one of those family car commercials with an old dog in it, and today, he was already back into the familiar motions of ‘being well’.
He had been through enough therapy in his life to know the “highs and lows” mental health speech every which way, but what he hadn’t realized until this morning was that when you were low, being low becomes your new normal. Eddie had been through it before (with Shannon, with his parents, with… name a thing), and he knew it would probably come again, but that didn’t make the moments that he got to stand in the light on the other side of the tunnel any less sweet.
It felt like he was standing in the sun.
“Morning Hen! Coffee?” Eddie grinned as he took the stairs up into the loft two at a time, box of danishes in one hand, coffee holders stacked high in the other. He had literally been smiling since he parked his car outside, and was now beaming at Hen only because she was lucky enough to be the first person he got to see that day. Lucky, sure, but he still didn’t miss the way that her brows rose into her hair as she took her cup and her selection of baked goods, knowing full well that this was probably… a lot to take in from his behavior for the past many weeks.
“You’re… cheery.” Hen commented easily, staring at Eddie like a puzzle to figure out—and while that would have made him nervous before, it was actually kind of nice now, a friend showing that she cared.
To his credit, Eddie just shrugged, pulling off another coffee as he put the boxes down on the table, knowing full well they would be devoured before he could even look back. “What can I say? It’s a good day today, the sun is out, and I only have to be here for eight hours. Hey, where’s Chim? I got Mr. Asian James Bond an extra bear claw, since he’s been driving everyone up the wall with his whole sorority girls speech.”
Hen let the topic drop (and Eddie thanked her silently for it) as she groaned and shook her head, taking another drag from her coffee cup as, sure enough, the pastry boxes started to draw everyone in like flies. He started handing out coffees to those who’s orders he could remember, grinning as Hen launched into it. “No no, ‘Asian James Bond’ was last week, now it’s ‘Asian Sex Symbol’ to you. God, that stupid calendar, between he and Bobby I am ready to enter myself, blow them both out of the water as Miss July, and—”
“Hey, hold up, where’s Bosko?” Eddie said, cutting her off before she could pick up too much steam, staring at the last coffee in his hands as Bobby pulled his own free.
Hen and Bobby shared a glance as Bobby cleared his throat around a mouthful of coffee, swallowing before he started to speak. “Actually, Lena’s back with the 136 for the foreseeable future. I’m happy to say that we finally have that vacancy filled.”
Eddie felt his brows launch into his hairline, only vaguely remembering that Lena was supposed to be here on a temporary basis—and he had been a complete ass to her for the past few months. Well, that was going to be a fun little addition to his long list of issues, and he winced as he made a mental note to swing by the 136 later on with another danish and an apology. Hen caught the look, her own brow tilting in return, though she was good enough to redirect her attention back up to Bobby. “So, wait, who’s going to be the newbie on the 118?”
“He is walking up the stairs right now, if you want to turn around. Just graduated out of the Academy last week. Pretty much top of his class, apparently impressed enough people that I had to fight off station 6 to get him to come here—welcome, Evan Buckley.”
“Hey, uh, you can just call me Buck.”
Eddie almost choked on his coffee as he heard a voice behind him, grabbing a napkin to catch a few drops as he turned, trying to repress his cough as he turned around, meeting a pair of blue eyes, staring at Eddie with an intensity that made his insides curl like he had just been sucker punched. He didn’t say anything, of course, just reached out and shook hands, introduced himself, did the whole shebang—with a smile, he might add!
Today was a good day. It could still be a good day. It really, really had the potential to be a good day.
-
Today was not a good day.
Eddie wanted to work well with Buck, he really did, but every time Buck opened his mouth, all Eddie could feel was pressure, water pushing in on him at every angle, the choking taste of mud in his mouth. At this point in time, Eddie wasn’t sure what was worse—that Buck seemed to put his foot in his mouth whenever he talked to Eddie, or the fact that he didn’t seem to give a fuck where and when he was flapping his yap.
An exploding man hole cover literally knocking someone’s arm into the nearby pool? He had barely started with “Hey, you good? You must have lucked out after that firetruck and all…” before Eddie was talking over him, asking for gauze and a tourniquet to try and save some of the live tissue in the very-much-not-alive arm.
A stab wound to the ass that resulted in the most lifelike Michelin man that Eddie had ever seen? “So, silver star, huh? You save a platoon or something?” Eddie managed to smile, jaw tight as he shook his head. “No, nothing like that. I was just in convoy.”
Even their downtime wasn’t safe—a grocery run that wound up with the entire team stacked high with grocery bags as they walked back into the station? “Hey, I saw a piece about that drill—“
“Alright, who wants lunch?” Eddie was immensely thankful for Bobby’s distraction, not bothering to hide the fact that his interruption was far from a coincidence. By now, even Hen was looking at Buck like he was a crazy person at that point—or maybe just an asshole.
Somehow, after all of their calls, it only came to a head in the gym. Apparently, Buck had decided that the subtle approach (not that anything Buck did could be called subtle) wasn’t good enough, and for whatever reason decided that the gym was the best time to approach Eddie.
Honestly, if Eddie wasn’t a good thirty away from the first real workout he had had in weeks, he probably would have walked away.
“Eddie, you… you know who I am, right?”
His jaw twitching in time with his punches, Eddie finally relented from the poor bag and looked at Buck directly, jaw set as he started to rewrap his hands. “And what if I didn’t? You think this would have gone over well with HR, the new guy bringing up the worst days of my life and all but asking me about a fucking guardian angel?”
“Jesus, that’s not what I—“
“I met Athena.”
Eddie could almost hear Buck’s mouth shut, the clack of his teeth somehow louder than the din of the station behind him. “I met her and she told me that she didn’t know what had happened, and then she offered to make me forget. Forget about you, about everything, because not even she knew where you had wound up.” Eddie started, rolling his wrists easily. “She apologized to me, she said she missed you, well, not that she was alone in that sense. You should probably find a way to apologize to her, too. Let her know you’re okay. Hold the bag.” Eddie’s voice was low even as his tone started to sharpen, doing his absolute best to keep his face neutral, lest he want any attention from Hen or Bobby for harassing the new guy.
To Buck’s credit, he did as Eddie asked, holding the bag steady as Eddie started to wail on it anew, thankful that he at least had the temporary distraction of pressure against his knuckles to stop the urge to scream into the sky.
“Athena… she really did that?” Eddie didn’t respond, just threw another punch, grunting with the exertion. Buck’s voice was low, barely louder than the sound of Eddie’s hands making contact with the bag. “Is that what you want? An apology? Because I’m not going to apologize for saving you, Eddie, I’m not going to say sorry for not leaving you in the bottom of a pit to… I’m not sorry for that. So if that’s what you’re after, I don’t know what to offer you.”
Eddie threw a kick from his left, giving Buck plenty of time to adjust his grip before his ankle came smashing into the bag, panting as he stared Buck down, feeling the anger start to drain out of him as he breathed, shaking his head. “Buck, is that what you think this is about?”
Buck, bless him, just looked like a lost puppy when what Eddie said sunk in.
“You saved my life. I mean, you’ve always kept me safe, but back there you saved my life. You let me go home to my kid, you… I could never thank you enough for that. I’m not mad about that.” He shook his head, flexing his fingers as he took another fighting stance, his poster lower, more subdued than the all out attack he was waging before.
“Well then what—“
“I’m not mad at you because you left.” Eddie repeated, starting another round of punches, each hit slower, shorter, but packed with more force than was strictly necessary. “I’m mad at you because you fucking—because you didn’t come back. Because you chose not to come back. You went through the academy, top of the class, and that was eighteen weeks of you being here, just miles away from me in Los Angeles, and you let me think that you were dead that entire time. You were with me my whole entire life, you were a constant, and then I lost you, Buck, and I had to try and live with that. And then you show up at work today, and you’re alive, and human, and I’ve had barely eight hours to deal with all of this, after I—I fucking mourned you. I mourned you, and you let me, and that—that’s why I’m mad.”
Although, the more he spoke, the more Eddie realized that he wasn’t mad, not really, not that he would own up to it that easily. He wasn’t angry, he was just… crushed. His hook got sloppy and he went wide, eyes wild, stumbling only a little before catching himself on the bag.
“Why does everyone leave me? What did I do, Buck, why didn’t you come back?”
The sudden sound of footsteps drew his eye up to the loft where the next shift was pouring in, easily exchanging pleasantries with Eddie’s team, and Eddie felt the last bit of fight drain out of him as he started to unwind his gloves. The day was done. His shift was over. And after feeling nothing but empty for weeks, Eddie had just about exhausted the entire range of his emotional capabilities in less than a day.
“Eddie, I—“
“Forget it, Buck. I’ll see you tomorrow, or whatever.” Eddie said, not even bothering to look over his shoulder as he headed back to the locker area.
-
“Fire and Rescue, hello?”
Eddie was having another… long day. Not a bad day, not necessarily, but not a… great day either. He had still managed to get up, he had still brought himself to work, he still managed an honest smile when he kissed Chris goodbye, but he found himself hesitating before he wound up walking into the 118. He didn’t know if he could handle Buck again today—thankfully, it seemed like he didn’t have to. Buck was mostly absent that morning, giving Eddie enough apologetic looks over the table to display that he got he had been an asshole the day before (or, more likely, that Hen and Chim had verbally beat that fact into him before Eddie got there).
Their morning had gone off without incident—there had only been one real call outside a few false alarms, a moron with his head literally cemented into a microwave—and to be honest, Eddie couldn’t deny the fact that he loved how easily he and Buck could work together. Well, how easy they worked together when Buck shut up for three minutes.
Another save, an easy lunch, and Eddie’s eight hour shift looked like it would be ending easily when they got the call to head down to Torrence, walking into what felt like the worlds most mothball-scented Army Navy Surplus store.
Eddie felt his body tense up as soon as the word ‘grenade’, having to take a split second to remind himself that he was still in the States, he wasn’t in wartime, he was still safe. Because he was safe, they were okay, until Buck moved the dressings and a gold glint caught his eye.
“None of the guys I’ve worked with were dumb enough to shoot a live round into their own leg, but I’m familiar with the ordinance.”
Eddie felt his jaw twitch again as Buck stared him down, a tic that he was sure would come to be familiar in over the next few days. Honestly, he was starting to think that Buck was just bringing all the mess with him—he had gone months without a call that threatened his life and limb, and then as soon as Buck came back into his life, there he was, with a grenade stuck inside of some old, gun collecting bastard. He could almost feel the moment where Buck opened his mouth—it was the same feeling he got whenever Buck had appeared, years and years ago, whenever something extremely stupid was about to happen.
“I’m in.”
Of course he was.
For what it was worth, Buck had stellar bedside manner. It was easy for him to to make small talk with Charlie while he hung the morphine, asking about his wife, his life, and Eddie found himself a little bit reassured by how easily Buck was able to buckle down and rise to the situation. After all, Buck had been doing that for Eddie’s whole life—it would be a shame if he lost that skill when he could use it the most.
They kept their talk small and professional as Eddie worked, even though most of his work was giving short, clipped orders, like he was afraid that the grenade would be able to tell how stressed out he was and put them both out of their misery, then and there. They both let out a collective sigh of relief as the grenade plunked, solid and heavy into the bin, Buck hastily closing it like a lid would save them all if that thing were to blow up.
Eddie was just finishing up, throwing a few stitches to try and keep things together until Charlie could make it up to surgery when Buck finally found his voice.
“I was scared, Eddie.”
Eddie didn’t even bother looking up, his fingers working quickly. “I know, but we got it out, we just have to be careful not to move the box too much.”
“No. I mean, about coming back, about seeing you, I… I was scared.”
Eddie looked up as he threw another stitch, sparing a quick look to make sure that the old man was still out cold. When Buck looked up to him, Eddie rose his brows, giving him a little not of encouragement.
“You said I’ve been with you your whole life, but… that goes both ways, Eddie. I don’t even know what happened, one minute I had hurled you out of that lake, and the next I was nothing, there was just nothing, and then…” He took a breath as he moved the dressings, letting Eddie continue his easy stitchwort. “And then I was in a loft in Los Angeles, with a drivers license in my pocket and a brochure for the LAFD Academy on a dresser. I still don’t know how I got there, but I knew it would bring me to you.”
“Here, cut here.”
Buck snipped the end of Eddie’s suture easily, passing him a tube of antibacterial gel, dolloping it along the messy wound site.
“For the first time in years, I couldn’t feel you anymore. I didn’t know what you were doing, or how you were feeling, or if you were safe, and it scared me. I missed you, of course I did, but I knew that if I just went right back to you, it would be like nothing had changed, when really, everything had changed.” Eddie looked up as he covered the gel in an adhesive gauze patch, hanging another bag of fluids, eyes tracking between the steady blip of the heart monitor and the very live grenade in a bin at the end of the ambulance, while his brain tried to keep up with the live grenade that he and Buck were lobbing back and forth.
Nodding for Buck to open the back door, Eddie waited until they both had their feet on the ground to respond, rolling his neck. “Well, that’s kind of par for the course. Being scared, I mean.” he started, a small smile on his face as Buck looked back, catching his eye. Eddie shrugged, eye darting over to the rest of their team, still safely out of earshot as he nudged Buck’s shoulder, the motion easy and simple, muscle memory built up over years.
“Welcome to the human condition. It kind of sucks. You’re going to love it.”
And fuck, Buck was smiling again. Eddie would give anything to keep that look on his face, even as they handed Charlie off to the medics, even as the bomb squad guy called in the robot to… well, to do what, Eddie didn’t know. But that was the beauty of it all—he didn’t have to care anymore. All that mattered to him in that moment were his boots on his ground, the air around him, and maybe, if he played his cards right, the team he got to work with. He could feel Bobby’s eyes on him as he pulled his flac jacket off, a little slow on the uptake of whatever had happened in the ambulance.
“You know, you’re pretty badass under pressure.” Eddie said, his face curving up into the first real smile he had worn in days. Buck looked like a deer in the headlights, like Eddie must have been talking to someone, anyone else, and even Bobby cracked a grin as Eddie smacked him in the arm. “You can have my back any day.”
Buck looked, well, Eddie would have framed the look on Buck’s face if he could. It was a vision of pure joy, the simple sentence meaning more to both of them than anyone else could ever know, and Eddie had to resist the urge to pull him into a bone crushing hug as he kicked at the ground.
“Yeah. Or, you know, you could… You could have mine.”
If Eddie smiled any wider, he felt like his face was going to crack.
They were still not great—not by a long shot—but for the first time in almost six months, Eddie finally felt something close to closure, to peace, a starting point for the two of them that would take them both who-knows-where.
“Deal.”
And then, because nothing in Eddie’s life was ever easy, the ambulance exploded. Eddie wasn’t even phased at this point in his life—any exploding vehicle was fine by him as long as he wasn’t on it.
“Are, uh, are you guys hungry? There’s a great burger place around here, they’re open for another hour or so.”
-
Hanging back as the rest of his crew packed up, Bobby pulled his phone out of his pocket as it buzzed, a small smile gracing his lips as he unlocked it.

Can you hear me screaming please don’t leave me
Tumblr media
Summary: Bobby Nash and his niece were always really close. But on one fateful day he and his team were called to her house after her suicide attempt. After saving her his niece decided to go in the same line as work.
The summer went by fast. Within that time I have passed all of my tests to become an EMT. Only Uncle Bobby and Athena were there the day I passed my test and got my assignment to the 118 of course. Uncle Bobby made sure that I was put with the 118. Still no one beside him and Athena knows. I have also been spending time with Buck, Hen and Chimney. Just like Buck promise he and I went to a concert. We went to see Falling In Reverse (RIP Derek Jones I’m going to miss you.). When the mosh pits started Buck protected me as if life deepened on it. I just laugh my head off and Buck thought I lost my mind. I was used to mosh pits and I guess Buck wasn’t but he face was still priceless. Within all the time that I’ve spent with Buck so far he told me about his family, his sister Maddie, and his girlfriend or ex-girlfriend he wasn’t so sure about that situation. Anyways I’m currently on my way to the station to surprise everyone and tell them the news. I wasn’t the only new member that joining the 118. There’s a new guy named Eddie Diaz. I really only knew his name since that was all that Uncle Bobby told me.
When I got to the station the rest of the team was out on a call so there weren’t many people there. So I went upstairs and sat on one of the couch as I waited for everyone to get back. I texted Uncle Bobby to let me know when they come back so that I could hide if I needed to. I was playing on my phone when I could hear footsteps approaching me. “So you must be the Captain Niece.” A voice say. I look up from phone to see a very hot guy sitting on the table that was in front of the couch. I put my phone in my lap. “I’m guessing you are Eddie Diaz.” I said. “I am.” Eddie said. “Well I’m Y/n it’s nice to meet you.” I said holding out my hand. “Well it’s nice to meet you Y/n.” Eddie said as he shook my hand. “Eddie huh it that short for Eduardo or Edmundo?” I asked. Eddie looked kinda shocked. “How did you know?” Eddie asked. “I’m observant. So which is it?” I asked. “Edmundo.” Eddie said. “You look like an Edmundo.” I said smiling a little. “Why thank you. So Y/n what made you decided to do this? Because no offense you are really small.” Eddie said. “None taken but I can handle my own. As for why I chose to do this is a circumstance I went through I guess you can say.” I said. “Well I would like to hear all about it if you don’t mind telling me.” Eddie said. I shook my head. “No I don’t mind. It was a few months ago. I wasn’t exactly in the best mind space again. I’ve dealt with depression almost my whole life as with self harm. I tried to kill myself for the third time. I tried when I was thirteen and again when I was sixteen. I know that I can’t change what I’ve been through but I want to help people so they don’t have to feel or go through what I did.” I said as showed the scars that were on my wrist. Eddie took ahold of both of my wrist as he ran his thumbs over them then looked up at me. “I’m sorry that you had to go through that.” Eddie said. “Thank you Eddie that means a lot.” I said. “I guess that makes since now. The captain told me about a lot of people here are protective of you.” Eddie said. “Yeah that would make since. So I told you about myself some now why don’t you tell me about yourself.” I said taking my hands out of Eddies grip putting them in my lap.
Eddie told me about his life that he was in the army and that he has an extremely adorable boy name Christopher and that poor Christopher has cerebral palsy. Eddie even told me about the situation that was going on his wife and how didn’t know what he was going to do about it and how he was going to explain it to Christopher when he does. I told him that whatever he decides that Christopher would understand in time and that he might be the one who might take longer to get over it than Christopher. I made sure that Eddie knew that if he or Christopher needed someone to talk to that I will be all ears. Eddie seemed relieved when I said that. Uncle Bobby finally texted me saying that they were on their way. I smiled as I started jumping slightly in my seat. “Well someone seems excited.” Eddie said. “Well I asked my uncle to text me when they were on their way back because I want to surprise everyone.” I said. “So no one besides the captain knows?” Eddie asked. I shook my head. “Well I hope you have fun surprising them.” Eddie said as he got up. “Are you not going to say to see their reaction?” I asked. “I hope I’m still here. I have to get back home to Christopher.” Eddie said. “I understand that. I hope to meet that little cutie soon.” I said. “Christopher would really like that. So I guess I’ll be seeing you around.” Eddie said. “Yeah see you later.” I said giving him a little wave.
I stay sat on the couch until uncle Bobby told me that it was safe to come down. When he finally I got up from my spot and made my way down the stairs. “Okay that is a beautiful man.” I heard chimney say. If I had to guess it was probably Eddie that were talking about. “Where’s the lie and I like girls.” Hen said.  “Who in the hell is that?” Buck said. “It’s Eddie Diaz a new recruit. Graduated top of his class just this week. Guy was working a station six for time and a half but I convinced him to join to join us.” Uncle bobby said. “What do we need him for?” Buck asked. Which made everyone laugh. “He severed multiple tours in Afghanistan and he’s an army medic he’s got a sliver star. It’s not like he’s wet behind the ears. Beside he’s not the only new face that going to be around here.” Uncle Bobby said. Taking that as my que I finished walking down the stairs and over to everyone. “Yeah now you guys are going to have to deal with me a lot more.” I said. “Wait are you serious?” Buck asked. “Yup I passed my test last week.” I said. Buck smiled as he hugged me. “Welcome to the team sweetie.” Hen said. “Thank momma Hen.” I said. “Come on I’ll introduce you to him. He likes to be called 8 pack.” Uncle Bobby said as Hen and Chimney went with him to go say hi to Eddie just leaving Buck and I. “Raw Sliver star.” Hen said. “Better drop some more pounds there butch.” Chimney said. Buck looked back towards the locker room and kinda glared at Eddie. “You know I can see the steam coming for your ears. What to share with the class.” I said. “We don’t need that guy around here.” Buck said. “I’m pretty sure they said the same thing when you came around. Just take some time and get to know him Buck. He’s a nice guy.” I said. “How can you be so sure about that?” Buck asked. “Because before everyone got here we talked. Just talk to him Buck who knows you two could become best friends.” I said. “Yeah but you’re my best friend. A best friends that should have told me about this.” Buck said. “I wanted it to be a surprise. Come on admit it you were surprised Bucky bear.” I said.  “Ok fine I was surprised. But you should have told me I would have been there when you took the final test.” Buck said. “I know but Uncle Bobby was there. I wasn’t alone. I have to go change but I’ll be right back.” I said as I left to go to the ladies locker room so I can quickly get change so I can get ready to start my first shift.
Luckily I was able to get change before we had to go out in a call. “So what kind of experience is my first call going to be?” I asked. “A guy fell on to an air compression butt first.” Uncle Bobby said. “The million to one shot.” I said. I could hear people trying not to laugh even uncle Bobby was trying not to laugh. “Come on get in the rig.” Uncle Bobby said. I nodded and made my way inside the fire truck. Buck was sitting on one side of me and Chimney was sitting on the other side of me. I out the head set on and we made our way to the call. “So sliver star huh?” Chimney asked. “Yeah.” Eddie said. “Did you save a platoon of something?” Chimney asked. “No no. Nothing like that uh just a convoy.” Eddie said. “Eddie you heard about the hot firefighter calendar?” Hen asked. I look at Buck to see him glaring at Hen. I playfully nudge him. “I’m sorry the what” Eddie asked laughing at little. “For charity.” Hen said. “So is your full name Eduardo?” Buck asked. “No.” Eddie said. “People every call you Diaz?” Buck asked. “Not if they want me to repose.” Eddie said. “Something gotta give we got Cap, Hen, Chimney, Buck. We just can’t call you Eddie.” Buck said. “Can’t tell if he’s being serious or not.” Eddie said. “I like to always operate under the assumption that nothing he says is serious.” Chimney said. “Oh come on Bucky bear you know we love you.” I said nudging him.
When we arrived at Hector’s Rim and Tire shop Uncle Bobby was the first to go talk with the worker while the rest of us got the Medical stuff that we were going to need. We were lead over to a like who had blew up like a balloon. “Okay Hector can you hear me? Alright hang in there buddy. Alright let’s get him on his side maintain pressure on the wound.” Uncle Bobby said as He, Eddie, Chimney, Buck and I helped with lifting Hector off of the air pressure. “It’s a hundred pounds per square inch pumped through his entire body.” Buck said. Hen started to check his heart rate with a stethoscope. “Breathing shallow. He’s heart is racing. Airs filled his stomach, his chest, even behind his eye lids. I’m more concerned about the space around his heart and lungs.” Hen said. “Ok Eddie start a nasal cannula. Chimney get him some morphine.” Uncle Bobby said. “On it.” Chimney said as he went over to Hector’s side grabbing his hand and tried to stick him. “It’s like trying to inject a needle into stone.” Chimney said. “The pressure is pushing everything out. I can’t even get any air through the nostril.” Eddie said trying to get the nasal cannula on. “Jugular venous distention, tachycardia, hypotension, diminished breath We’re looking at tension pneumothorax.” Hen said. “The air pressure is collapsing his organs. We need to get in there and drain the fluid. Buck I need you to get a 14-gauge angiocath. We need to start decompressing the pleural cavity. Y/n I need you to cut away his shirt.” Uncle Bobby said. I nodded as Chimney handed me a pair of scissors the I cut away at Hector’s shirt so it would be easier for Buck. I stood back up so Buck could have room to work. “Alright. Alright.” Buck said. “You want me to help?” Eddie asked him. “I got it.” Buck said. “Hang in there Hector.” Uncle bobby said. “I’d go lower.” Eddie said. “What? Um no. Second intercostal space. Midclavicular line.” Buck said. “The chest wall is thinner at the fifth intercostal at the anterior axillary line. It’s a decrease chance of injuring any vital organs. I’ve treated guys with collapses lungs in combat.” Eddie said. “Do it.” Uncle bobby said. “Please?” Eddie asked as he held his hand to Buck. Buck handed the syringe to Eddie. “Thank you.” Eddie said as he stuck the syringe parallel to Hector’s under arm then undid part of it as the air started to leave Hector’s body. Hector let out a breath as he opened his eyes. “That’s it Hector breathe. Nice and slow.” Uncle Bobby said. Then we got Hector on a gurney and I help Buck pick stuff up and take it back to the rig.
A/n: I know that I have another way of watching season two. But I usually watch the stuff I need with subtitles and I can’t with the way I've been watching it. So I might have to be this story on hold until either it get back on Hulu or it comes out to DVD

When in France, I wear no pants!
This is my French playlist. It’s one that I am very proud of. It took me several months of researching, listening, finding, playing records to gather over 400 songs. But, France. What a country! This playlist could go as far as 500 songs.
Hit play: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-iHPcxymC1-CHRTel_bBjdT_DAHLrnvX
There is an endless amount of talent from this part of the world. From across many decades the songs just keep coming. Incredible. Une région tellement incroyable pour la musique. Here is a list I created. It took me many months to compile.
