before you read this i'm writing this as a filipino

characters actively referring to older siblings as big brother/sister when speaking to them is inaccurate because, culturally, that's not a natural thing to do when you speak english.

on the other hand, when speaking in tagalog, it feels incredibly awkward not to use kuya/ate (or manong/manang in some cases and in other philippine languages) on an older sibling or your friend's older sibling, though the term also widely applies to highschool upperclassmen, guards at school and mall entrances, stall clerks, jeepney drivers, etc.

now, if i'm writing a filipino story in english (for the sake of a wider audience and partially my sanity) i'm not fucking translating that into big brother/sister because it almost feels like removing too much. we're english speakers too, so a full english sentence with kuya or ate thrown in the mix happens regularly. we are not calling those bitches big brother/sister lmao

that's why i believe japanese characters with their dialogue in english should keep stuff like oniisan/oneesan and senpai (as well as the more general and common ones like -san, because it gives a bit of insight on how the characters see each other). like, terms whose english translations work fine can just be in english (i.e. mr./ms./mrs. for teachers & dr. for doctors instead of sensei). but when i keep a few terms untranslated it's because it genuinely holds some cultural weight that the english translation doesn't carry over and turns awkward instead!

it just really upsets me to see the sibling honorifics getting memed on and given sexual connotations just because the internet is so much more interested in how they were used in another ecchi or something. like, that's a term regular people use on the daily. i know american translators probably don't have the insight of another non-japanese culture which utilizes sibling honorifics, so deciding to opt for big brother/sister or just the characters' given names happens, but i get the feeling it's partially caused and/or maintained by internet stigma.

it was embarrassing to notice how hypocritical filipinos also make the same stupid oniichan jokes while we still actively use kuya and manong but that's exactly how i caught on. this shit's still about looking at japan weird and refusing to dismantle that mindset

Hi, hello! You can call me Stellastra. This is my art blog I made in September 2024, but I've been on tumblr since 2014 on my personal blog.

To tell you a bit about me: I like to draw, play video games, take photos, work out, and collect historical fashion books.

I'm admittedly a fairly shy and private person, so my posts will almost strictly be related to art and/or my OCs. I was born and raised in the the southeast USA.

Unfortunately, I can only speak English (+ some rusty high school-level French). I want to learn Tagalog or Ilocano (my mom's native language) someday.

I have pet cats.

I can safely say that I really started drawing when I was around 10 years old, when I was doodling in the margins of my schoolwork in the fourth grade.

I love watching 'so bad, it's good' movies like The Room, Troll 2, Samurai Cop, Neil Breen movies, etc.

I have an unhealthy collection of historical fashion books. Most of my collection is 19th century European stuff, but I'm always looking for books of an earlier time or even non-European cultures.

BEFORE THE BEGINNING — three sentences (or more) about something that happened before the plot of my current project

extra context: they're both on horseback in this bit, just outside the barn. matulin is the name of isko's horse

The forest should have been alive in the midnight heat. There was stillness instead: the absence of owls’ calls and bullfrogs’ croaks, of the sneaking of soft animal bodies through the blue-black underbrush. Every few beats, lightning cracked across the sky in electric spiderwebs, leaping cloud-to-cloud, illuminating their tall, jagged shadows from within. Thunder did not yet reach them. Rain, an impossibility. Beneath him, Matulin's eyes flashed white in the darkness, and Isko reached down to sooth a hand over her shoulder. Her hair was damp with sweat. In his other hand, the barrel of the shotgun had grown warm. “It’s too late in the season for this.” Jamie broke the silence. His voice was rough, strained in effort to speak as lowly as possible. “We saw smoke to the west last week.” “Could be nothing,” Isko returned. “Won’t even be a dreg if it is.” Silence again. Neither of them wanted to ride forward into the uncertain night.

this is from pahimakas, my fungal horror/dystopia wip set in the same universe as the other wip i've been talking abt. what's written above is the inciting event that takes place about a week before the plot actually starts. these two live on a rural farm in the midwest, and it's the tail-end of spring, where herds of infected should be no longer active. and yet. the wip follows the story of isko manlapaz, a large-animal vet turned physician. thematic concepts include the radical valuing of human life over all else; the grief of seeing someone make a decision you wish you’d made yet things turning out just as horrible; and the unavoidable truth of doing harm to people you love. title comes from a Tagalog word translated as "last farewell or last will."

(Side note, but I've been thinking of talking about books that I've read lately. Mostly music stuff, but there's this series of murder mystery books called the "Tita Rosie's Kitchen Mysteries". The writing is... fine.)

My favorite dish is sinigang. Other staple dishes are tinola, nilaga, mongo, adobo... My dad's favorite is karekare, but I hate that.

I am 1/8th Ilocano, but that doesn't really count for anything when my great-grandmother was born in Manila.

I can follow casual conversations, but ask me to speak and I won't be able to string my learned vocabulary and grammar together. I usually throw single Tagalog words into English sentences.

Sample phrase: "Tatlong pusa sa mesa." Three cats on the table. Last year, my cousins' cats were really naughty and all got on the table when nobody was looking.

I can sing nursery rhymes. ("Ako ay may lobo, lumipad sa langit...")

My screen name is Philyra K. Illagan. If I could change it today, I'd be "Philomena" instead. But Philyra is one of my oldest characters, so I just made it so her paternal grandmother is Philomena, and Philyra's name is a portmanteau of that and her mother's name, Analira. I don't know how prevalent portmanteaus are in the Philippines, but my fictional world has a whole family tree branch of portmanteaus.

I've had a concept of a story called "The 8th Grade Wars" since I was in 7th grade. It has evolved over the years, but one constant is the focus on the protagonist's Filipino identity. I've flipped my family tree, so she has what I think is an Ilocano surname. (I originally had her know Tagalog and Cebuano, but now that I know I'm a little bit Ilocano, I'll replace Cebuano with Ilocano)

but on the topic of language learning apps some i used include

Drops - made by the same people at kahoot, more of a vocabulary app than learning actual grammar but it has a lot of options, free version lets u do 5 minutes every 12 hours. If you want to learn more than one language what i did was download the individual language apps (u can either just download drops for all languages or drops (specific language) ie drops spanish for just spanish) and use different accounts. i also took advantage of the free trial cuz its fun but i do think the 5-10 minutes a day thing works fine to create a doable habit

Beelinguapp - This one requires a subscription i dont remember how much you can do without one but i have an android so i just downloaded a modded apk. edit: i forgot to elaborate when i posted this but its practicing reading / listening by reading stories and articles

Mango languages - this one is a lot different than duolingo but still good, its essentially based on learning by hearing / speaking a new language than just learning vocabulary and writing sentences. It requires premium BUT if you have a library card you can check if your local library lets you use it for free (this isnt guarenteed unfortunately but i think it is more common in bigger areas), there are also some free endangered languages

Memrise - Like the name implies this is mostly an app for memorizing words and sentences, using flashcards. Theres official courses but users can make them too so you can use it for more than just language learning if you want to. I think if you used this with mango languages it would be helpful to get practice writing phrases & words in a way you dont get to with ml. Apparently theres a pro subscription but i have no idea whats different & a lot of people say the free version works just fine

Ling - Havent used this for very long but its almost identical to duolingo but with more languages, its basically premium only but once again i use a modded apk

Lifeprint - ASL w/ videos and its all free! a very good resource even if you arent looking to learn

Tagalog.com - Free resource for tagalog you just have to make an account

If you have resources for specific languages or anything in general id love to hear, this is all just from someone who has had a casual interest in language learning

Also if you have an android you can download modded apks of a lot of paid language apps. Just be safe (use adblock) and smart, not all apks are actually modded or theyre too buggy to be worth it, so pay attention to the reviews. The paid apps are often very nice but the prices are ridiculous. everyone deserves the chance to learn. I dont know if theres ios equilivants (although i wonder if theres a way to run apks on your pc through something like bluestacks)

A Sun That's Rising- partial redesigns!

As we've been writing STR, I've had the uncontrollable urge to worldbuild (map coming soon), and after speaking with a diversity consultant about designs and how appropriate accuracy to existing cultural clothing vs fantasy world=not the same culture and not wanting to misrepresent, I have started the STR character designs! One notable change is Wind's hair color, but aside from that it fits completely appropriately into EOS.

(Also, I have been picturing them as inspired by these cultures and of these races and appearances since I wrote EOS, this is just me getting the confidence/go-ahead to make their clothing more culturally accurate)

Here's the rough designs I have so far! (for EOS folks- this does contain the STR characters as well, so just. uh. know those guys exist, there shouldn't be any spoilers in here though so dont worry about that. Of the canon chain/EOS guys I've only properly designed 3 so far, but I do have concept sketches for Hyrule as well based on what part of the story he's in, so that's cool. These are also labeled (sometimes) for your convenience. I am mixing real life time periods a bit, but that's Fine, I did want everyone to be '''appropriately''' clothed (i.e. wearing enough clothing that nobody gets uncomfortable, as nudity tends to be sexualized in western culture) so that meant futzing around with eras a bit hahah. Also, reminder that many of these characters are adopted, and therefore I'm not just going 'boom he's south american because thats fun', Ihave thought through the distance and cultural exchange between countries and the origins of their bio families and stuff.

Wind's design is inspired by Peruvian traditional clothing. The sandals have an extra ref, as I added them to the design later.

TWI!

Twilight's design, like Malon's, is inspired by Indigenous Turtle Island (american) cultures, specifically those located in the plains areas. He is Malon and Time's bio kid.

MALON!

Malon the beloved! As Jingle Dresses are ceremonial, I took some inspiration from them, but am not recreating one, because they are connected to the spirituality and ritual of Indigenous culture in real life, and those cultures and the ones in the story are not the same.

SHADOW!

Here's Shadow in Ao Dai! As I've determined that (specifically East) Hyrule(the country) has partially Chinese cultural inspirations (and is where Castle Town lies,) Shadow's design fits with West Hyrule's culture, which is inspired by Vietnamese culture. I also checked the meaning of colors of clothing and period appropriate dyes, so there's that :D

GROOSE!

As of now, none of you have met Groose in canon, but I Love Them So Much. Inspired by Norwegian cultural clothing.

NOTE: I will not be explicitly naming all of the clothing items as they are named in real life, when writing the fic. Since 'Tagalog' is the name of an Austronesian language, Hyrule could not wear something called a 'Barong Tagalog,' if Tagalog did not exist in the world.

I'll add on more characters as I sketch them, but I am, as always, pretty busy. I'll go ahead and post the maps next, and then some picrews I did as well, so you all can get a sense of their faces.

1,) i build legos. and collect them. literally just started doing it in my final year of undergrad because i was so stressed and didn’t know how to cope with the stress of my final year

2.) i have an avocado intolerance. it’s crazy ‘cause growing up i was fine and i was able to eat guacamole and avocado in sushi roll. then one day, i ate at a restaurant when i was 18 and started itching + getting stomach problems. thought it was a one-off so i tried guacamole again and… yeah, no more avocados in dishes for me (rip to my sushi options going from limitless to limited)

I hate it when someone likes to compare other people to each other. Why? for a simple and basic answer. We are all Different. You have a trait or characteristic that I don't have, or rather, will never have, and vice versa. But for me, that's totally okay. I'm fine just being myself, and I don't need to compare myself to what others have done or accomplished in their lives.

This is similar to comparing my kids to someone else's kids. I don't get why we still have this toxic mindset of comparing and making everything a competition.

I am a mother of two, and I tell you, my kids are the total opposite. They have similarities, sure, but they are different even though they came out of a single womb—mine. I do compare them sometimes, I admit, but I do it in my own head, silently. And the reason for that is because I want to know them better and what works for them and what doesn't.

I don’t think any mother who is in their right mind would want their kids to be compared to others just because they can’t talk yet, read, or do whatever it is that makes you think that your kid is much better than the others. That is fucking crazy! I am telling you, I am just trying not to be disrespectful to someone older than me, and supposedly she’s not the one who should be comparing her grandchildren to her other grandchildren. Who am I referring to? Lo and behold, it’s my mother-in-law.

When I had my daughter, which is basically the first grandchild for both sides, I felt the pressure of being a good mom. I never felt that I was doing enough. that I am failing my daughter by having me as her mom. Why? Because that’s what she’s letting me feel whenever she’s trying to say something about my daughter.

My daughter, while growing up, was a very hyperactive kid. However, she didn’t start talking early like the other kids. She can say Mama and Papa by around 6 to 7 months, but she started mumbling when she was 2 and a half years old. English is not our native language, but when she started talking by the age of three, she could communicate purely in English and could not even understand or speak a little bit of our mother tongue, which is Tagalog (Filipino).

When she was around 1 and a half, my MIL kept on comparing her to other kids who were older than her. She keeps on bombarding me with questions: why has my daughter not talked yet? or start reciting colors, numbers, or even alphabets? I wanted my daughter to take her time as a kid, and as a new mom back then, even until now, I wanted my kids to explore and learn things on their own. As a parent, I know I should be guiding and teaching them, but I also know that experience itself is the best teacher. I want my daughter to learn from her surroundings, and I will be with her to guide and watch her explore.

I don’t want her to be battered with all of the things that she will learn when she goes to school. I don’t want to rob her of her little bubble of joy, in which she can just be herself and be a toddler. She likes watching at an early age, and she likes nursery rhymes a lot. I never really introduced her to the alphabet. The colors, yes, when we are playing with her toys, but not to the extent that I will force her to recite them back and remember everything. Besides, I noticed a pattern in my daughter’s behavior; she doesn’t like repetitive things. Once you tell her something, she will listen maybe twice up to three times; more than that? She will ignore you and just do something else. When she was 2 and a half, we noticed that she knew the alphabets by heart without us constantly reciting them to her. She’s just reading the letters out of the blue.

I remember when she told her daughter, my SIL, that I never gave time to my daughter to teach her the alphabet, the numbers, etc. and that I just kept on spending my time watching Netflix. WTH? Does she even see me on a daily basis to know what I am doing? That I am not doing anything and just watching?

When my youngest was born, my sister was also expecting her first child. They were born seven months apart. My youngest started walking at 1 year and 2 months, and my sister’s firstborn started to walk at around 10–11 months. MIL never fails to make my blood boil whenever she gives unsolicited advice or comments. She kept asking why my little boy was still like that and that I should let him go outside and let him walk around. Are you even in your right mind? My son was born during the pandemic, and most of the time we’re just at home.

Recently, my son just turned two and still cannot talk. But he can say mama, his dad’s first name, and call his lolo granddad. while my sister’s firstborn can say and repeat words that they are saying and is starting to talk. I am feeling so frustrated. I don’t know how to say it, but I really wanted her to shut her mouth about my kids' development. We are not competing with anyone. I want my kids to take their fucking time and enjoy their lives as kids and as toddlers.

My children’s pace of development has nothing to do with other kids'. Why can’t she just let my kids do their own thing at their own pace instead of trying to make everything a competition? I am so fed up with her mindset and the way she says things. She keeps on talking without thinking first. I honestly cannot keep up with her.

I am not sure why I have a MIL like this. I never thought that she was like this before. I thought she was sweet, thoughtful, and all ears when you had something to say. I thought she was listening to what I was about to say without any prejudice. but I am so wrong. It didn’t take a while for me to see her true colors. But yeah, that’s another story.

I just don’t know how to calm myself down. And writing it down somewhat eases what I am feeling right now.
