God, I have so many... I am of course a firm believer in the hc that all the mercs are queer, under the trans umbrella, and neurodivergent.

This is one that @jamisonwritestf2trash brought up, Medic had spoiled Archimedes so much that he's basically created a monster. Archimedes is an absolute diva, and will throw a fit when told "no". Medic also refers to himself as Archimedes' 'father' (the German word for father though).

Pyro in some part of their mind, knows exactly what it's doing. "Pyroland" is mainly a trauma response that stemmed from a massive incident that happened when they were younger.

Spy is actually very careful with his money, due to his family being very poor. Most of the flash stuff he does is for show.

Demo learnt how to play the piano from his father, before his sight eventually failed. He loves to play it because it reminds him of when he'd hang out with his father.

Sniper loves to "go bush" when he has time. He'll grab the bare essentials and just go off. When he comes back, he's visibly happier and less stressed.

Soldier has very bad hearing, and Engie made him some hearing aids. He also knows a little bit of ASL from Pyro. Soldier does not like it when people bring up his hearing, and will get very defensive over it.

Scout is absolutely crazy at folding clothes, growing up in a house with 8 other people taught him how to fold clothes quickly and effectively. I also hate when people make him a misogynist, his ma would disown his ass so fast.

Heavy is amazing at chess, and is a brilliant strategist. He's fiercely protective of his mama, sisters, Medic, and his team.

Oh Engineer, I could go on about this guy. He loves being the "Team dad" and cooking for the team, especially if someone helps him. If given the chance, this man will infodump for HOURS.

Demo is probably confused for like five minutes and then has a lightbulb moment,

"Oh, yeah, I remember being on the rag, hurt like hell. Medic can fix that if ya want. He took mine years ago." He had follicular cysts and good god was he thrilled to never have that pain again. (He's just like me fr!) Assuming you don't trust Medic, hate surgeries, can't get it removed, or just don't want it removed, he's understanding of your choice to keep it, and will try his best to be comforting. Anything you'll need, he'll manage to find. Heating pads? He's got them somewhere, he's sure. PMS pills? He's on his way to the lab to get them from Medic for you. If you have dysphoria from your period, he's also really good at providing comfort for that. If you're a trans man, he'll tell you you're plenty masculine and one of the strongest men he knows. If you're nonbinary he'll assure you that a little bit of blood every month doesn't change anything and that your identity is still valid as hell. He would fist fight your dysphoria if he could.

Engie is more surprised than anything. Not in a bad way! Here's the thing, he straight up forgets about periods once he got his uterus taken out. My man had PCOS, and once he no longer had to deal with unbearable cramps and sickness every month, he just never thought about it again. He's super quick to comfort you, though. In a similar vein to Demo, he'll tell you about Medic removing his. Again, I am very respectful of your choice. He will do his best to make you super comfortable and keep you happy. He'll make you special heating pads! He'll also bring you anything you need. I cannot stress this enough. When it comes to dysphoria, you will get called an insane amount of pet names. All validating your identity, of course. He understands the feeling of dysphoria and will do anything to ease the pain and sadness that comes with it. Lots of cuddles from him too btw.

Heavy is confused. Not by periods. This man grew up with three sisters. He knows what a period is by now. No, he's confused by you getting a period. He's not mean, of course! He's just going to ask you a lot of questions because he's probably just interested. He'll do whatever you need him to do to make it easier for you. He knows his sisters were miserable during their time, and he can't imagine how bad it is for you to have to deal with a period and dysphoria. Speaking of dysphoria, he doesn't really know what to say but also manages to say everything you need to hear at the same time? Like he assures you in no uncertain terms that you are super valid and no less of a man or person and that you are you and you're valid. He hugs you a lot! If you seem even the slightest bit sad, he's giving you a hug.

Medic is probably the best when it comes to dealing with periods. He understands dysphoria and knows how to ease your pain. The second you feel pain, he's handing you hot tea and pain medication. He keeps you in his lab while he works to keep an eye on you and sends Archimedes and his other doves over to comfort you whenever he can't. He tracks your period purely to make sure he can have anything you might need on hand day of. He's always willing to remind you of how scientifically you're gender has nothing to do with those pesky organs. Lots of compliments on your body if you're a trans man, commenting on how masculine you are. If you're nonbinary he's complimenting your resilience and strength. Honestly, he's great. Points taken off, though, because he wants your uterus for his ever growing organ collection, but he will respect your choices with minimal pestering.

Scout is confused all around. He doesn't get it. So you have to explain periods to him, then you have to explain being trans to him, and then you have to explain both together before it finally clicks in his mind. He's immediately supportive. Maybe to supportive. If you ask him to get period products you'll get hit with the "Alright babe, I'm in the pad isle, what's ur pussy size?" And if you make the mistake of not answering in the first five minutes he buys so many boxes of pads and tampons. You're sitting in bed clutching your stomach, and he comes in the room to dump at least seven boxes of pads and tampons on you. Hey, what he lacks for in understanding, he makes up for by being able to make you laugh so hard you forget the period cramps. You'll never feel dysphoria if he has any say in it. He will do anything to distract you from bad thoughts and will validate you until his voice wears out.

Sniper doesn't care that you have a period and doesn't care that you're trans. That sounds really mean, but I swear it's not like that. Periods are normal, and you shouldn't feel weird about them, so when it's your time of the month, he'll support you in whatever way you need, but he'll act very nonchalant about it all. With you being trans he reassures you that he doesn't care about how you were born and that you shouldn't either because your body doesn't define the person you are. Basically, this man is so supportive but in a really calm kind of way. But just because he acts all chill and nonchalant doesn't mean he isn't worried. Oh no, this man appears to be calm and collected, but he's really upset that you have to go through this. You might find yourself on the receiving end of hugs and kisses whenever you look particularly sad.

Considering his ass is on the support team, Spy is not very supportive. Well, not supportive emotionally. Physically, he'll bring you the best of whatever you need or want. He's more than happy to kill someone to get you something nice, just to see you light up or (happy) cry out of appreciation. Emotionally, however, he's not mean, but he thinks you're being ridiculous with the things you say. He wants to provide you comfort, but he really doesn't understand why you feel so dysphoric and doesn't even know where to start. He'll just reassure you he loves and cares for you. Speaks softly to you and talks more than he normally does if you prod him. Who knows, he might even sing for you or tell you stories while you lay in bed with cramps if that would make you feel better.

Soldier is confused, but he's got the right spirit. In a similar vein to Scout, has asked what your pussy size is at least once, and has at least bought nine boxes of period products. He really just wants to be helpful and make you feel better. He'll gladly get anything you need, from heating pads to chocolate he's already getting it the second you even thought about it. I'd you feel dysphoric, he'll remind you that you're an American!! (even if you aren't 😭) And you're an amazing person. So, who cares how you were born? What matters is the person you are today! Less screaming than normal, especially if you get migraines or just headaches in general. He's still really loud, and your head will still probably throb, but he's trying. It takes him a while to go from his normal 100% volume to a normal speaking volume but the effort really shows. Most of the time though, he might just lay with you and listen to you talk, if you're in any mood to. Or just take a nap with you. Literally anything you want to do, he'll do, as long as he can do it with you.

Pyro knows. Like 100% knows. They experience it every month and deal with pain and gender dysphoria. (They're the only merc who has a uterus and period, actually! They're MTF and underwent the surgeries only to realize their agender, they now have a complicated relationship with their gender where they love their body but dislike their uterus and want it removed but at the same time value their uterus) Anyways, this isn't a Pyro post so moving on! So, you two would probably sync up and deal with it together. Pyro would most likely focus on you to help them ignore their symptoms and dysphoria. They love helping you and caring for you. They have a big heated blanket that you can share to help ease pain, and they have as much chocolate as you need to make you feel better. Lots of hugs and cuddles, too! They'll talk to you for hours about their issues with gender dysphoria if you let them, always returning the favor to let you rant back at them. Finding their own way to assure you the feel the same and that you both need to realize that a blood cycle can't and won't ever define you or your gender.

he retained some French from when he was little. He’s not good at it in general but is a lot better at understanding it than speaking it. He can eavesdrop on Spy but can’t conjugate être. I also like versions of Scout that speak Spanish when people hc his mom as Latina.

Sniper

one of my all time favorite headcanons is Māori Sniper. Also, if you’ve seen this blog you’ll know i believe he’s an autistic king.

Engineer

I know a lot of people tend to portray him as a tender, kind, empathetic guy but I genuinely don’t think he’s ever felt empathy or genuine compassion in his life. Sure he knows how to act sweet and polite and soft and nonthreatening all the time but no matter how long you’ve known him, if you get in his way he’s already designing a new machine in his head to blow you away into the last century.

Demoman

Objectum Demoman is one of my all-time favorites. For real. I will genuinely ship him with eyelander, idgaf.

Soldier

I really love trans soldier headcanons. His transmasc swag is off the charts. It’s hard to come up with hcs for Soldier because he’s so fucking wild you could put him in any situation and it could be true. Lived in a diving bell for two years? Sure. Favorite food is un-husked kernels of wheat? Absolutely. Replaced his dick with his big toe so he could use it to walk? I could go on.

Heavy

during and after he obtained his phd in Russian literature he published a number of fiction books under a pen name. They’re all tasteful romances with subplots of political intrigue. They gained high critical praise and are still moderately popular in bookstores in Russia and some neighboring countries. all the royalties from sales go to his family. He’s also an autistic king.

Pyro

I don’t have many headcanons for pyro because I like keeping the whole mystery. I don’t wonder what’s under the mask or come up with possible names because I think the whole of the character is that mystery. But I will say that as great as unicorns and rainbows and cupcakes are, there’s really nothing Pyro loves more than hanging out with Engie in his workshop and pretending to help.

Medic

as far as my own headcanons, I have a lot. Here’s some. He does not have a driver’s license—he taught himself to drive by stealing a car. He’s insecure about his voice but he talks too much to really care. He’s always wanted a motorcycle. He puts drugs in his morning coffee. He doesn’t like classical music, he listens to the top 40s on the radio and sings along. The peppier the better.

One of my favorite Medic headcanons I ever heard was that he only has medical training as a veterinarian and I think that’s hilarious because it could absolutely be real.

Spy

He’s smart but he’s not as highly educated as he wants people to think. He never went to a university and maybe never even finished school. Just like Scout, he’s so damn good at what he does that he can afford to be more concerned with appearance and showing off than anything else. They’re both committed to making people see what they want them to see and nothing deeper.

Scout for 21; their fondest childhood memory

I’ve actually been meaning to write a fic with this scene in my head, so thank you for making me so excited to share this idea since I don’t have the time to write a full fic for this!

When Scout was thirteen years old, he was struggling with a lot of teenage angst, body dysphoria (because I HC him as trans and no one can stop me), and general frustration with his lot in life, so he spent a lot of time trying to be on his own and away from his family members, which was easier said than done, seeing as his brothers were often running wild all around Boston and were hard to avoid, while his ma was almost always home if she wasn’t working, and she often wanted to hang out with Scout when they were home together.

However, one thing that Scout found time to do away from his family was to play baseball right on the edge of town, where there were a lot of old buildings and empty fields. One time while playing though, he accidentally swung his bat too hard, and sent a baseball soaring through a nearby window. Even more unfortunate was the fact that, despite the building looking abandoned, it was owned by a city official, who just so happened to be there when the accident happened. The guy absolutely lit into Scout once he had him by the arm (which he squeezed way too tightly), going so far as to scream at him, call him a reckless idiot of a kid, suggest he was raised in a barn, etc. Poor Scout was in tears, and tried explaining himself/apologizing, but he couldn’t really be understood through all his bawling.

Just as the building’s owner was ready to drag Scout to the nearest police station, all while ignoring Scout begging him not to since his ma didn’t have enough money to pay for the window, a tall, well-dressed man came striding over from out of nowhere, and without so much as a word to Scout, he had the kid by the other arm (very gently, oddly enough) and told the first man that he was Scout’s father, and that his son hadn’t broken the window, and that it was in fact some other teenagers who had run off and left Scout to take the fall for it. Surprisingly enough, the city official believed him, and after apologizing to the supposedly father and son duo, he went on his way. For a few minutes, Scout was scared that this new stranger would beat him senseless, but instead the man asked if he was okay. After confirming that he was, Scout was then taken to a local diner by the stranger for lunch, the man claiming that he knew Scout’s ma and that it was okay with her.

Scout was uncertain at first, but seeing as the stranger had saved him, he agreed to go with him, and the two had a nice lunch together, the stranger letting Scout infodump about his interests for an hour or so (something he never got to do, seeing as his older brothers usually controlled a majority of their conversations), before he took the kid home. Afterwards, Scout insisted on bringing the guy to see his ma, but once his ma answered the door, Scout turned around and saw that the man was now gone. Scout ended up telling his ma that a stranger helped him out (leaving out the bit about the broken window), and at first his ma looked like she was going to scold him for trusting a stranger, but upon looking up and seeing something behind the kid that Scout couldn’t see, she smiled and said that he must have an angel watching over him.

Years later and Scout still has no idea that the guy was Spy, and his dad intends on keeping it that way; he doesn’t want to risk ruining that memory for him.

Engineer for 24; what they wish they could change about themselves

In all honesty, I think Engineer is one of those guys that’s pretty satisfied with who he is as a person, but if he could change two things, he’d want to be taller (he’s sick of the short jokes), and he’d want to be more energetic, since he feels like he can’t keep up with the younger mercs on his team.

Soldier for 24; what they wish they could change about themselves

This dude is completely convinced he’s a great American superhero of some sort, so he doesn’t think he needs to do any self-help or make changes to himself. (Secretly though, he wishes he could pay better attention to what his teammates are trying to explain to him, and he low-key wishes he wasn’t so quick to anger, but alas, he feels like he can’t change himself.)

Parent Mercs reacting to their child telling them they're trans, and want them to use opposite gender pronouns for them? (You can pick if each individual kid of the mercs is ftm or mtf)

Spy - He’s naturally a very observant man so he had his suspicions already, so when his child tells him that she’s a trans girl he isn’t shocked. He makes sure to listen to everything she has to say, and he can tell she’s very nervous. But when she’s done explaining herself, he’ll simply say, “Alright. Let’s go shopping, then.” Buying her an entirely new wardrobe with clothes that she genuinely feels comfortable in is the best way he can think to show his support. He asks her a lot of questions like whether she wants to grow her hair out, if she wants to wear makeup, etc. It’s very important to him that she knows he supports her completely.

Sniper - When his daughter first tells him she’s a girl, he just stares at her. It goes on for a good twenty seconds to the point she’s starting to freak out a little internally, before he finally chuckles and says, “You know, when you were born I thought I was getting off the hook from having to raise a girl, but I guess not, huh?” He gets up and hugs her, something he doesn’t do too often since he’s not a touchy-feely kind of man. He really doesn’t know how to raise a daughter at all, but he’s proud of her for telling him and he says the two of them can figure it out together. He’ll make a good effort to use the correct pronouns, but he’s not much help when it comes down to her transition because he simply doesn’t know a thing about being a girl. He ends up having to go to outside sources for help, asking Spy about women’s fashion and Medic about medical transition (if that’s something she wants to do). He’s a bit nervous about the whole thing because it’s such new territory but he’ll do anything to help his daughter be who she is. 

Medic - He’s genuinely caught off guard. He can be a bit oblivious when it comes to things that aren’t science, so up until that point it hadn’t even occurred to him that his child might be trans. He has to sit down just to process it, but he makes sure that his son knows it’s not a bad shock, just a shock. Once he gets over the initial surprise, he’s completely fine with it. It’s clearly very important to his child, so he cares about it, but he doesn’t see it as a big earth-shattering change. It’s just a change that he sees as part of his child growing up, and part of his job as a parent. It’ll take him a while to get used to using he/him for his son just because he has to break the old habit, but he’s completely supportive. If his son wants to get gender reassignment surgery or go on testosterone, Medic will want to be the doctor to do it so that he can make sure his son is getting the best treatment possible. 

Scout - Like Medic, he’s very surprised. He just keeps repeating stuff like, “Really? Are you sure? Geez, I didn’t realize... really? That’s cool- I mean, that’s great, ya know? Whatever you want. Not that you just want to be a guy, I just mean- that’s great-” He has no idea what to say, but he really is okay with it. He reassures his kid that he always did want a son, so this worked out pretty sweet. His gut reaction is to go play baseball with him, because he thinks that’s a pretty manly thing to do and will help his son feel supported (even though they’ve been playing baseball together this whole time). He doesn’t really know what to do or what steps to take, so he’ll just let his son tell him what he wants and he’ll go with the flow. He gets very defensive of his son if anybody misgenders him, saying stuff like, “Yo, are you fuckin’ blind? He’s obviously a boy, dumbass, come on. I think I know my son better than you do, pally.”

Pyro - They immediately start crying, and at first their son panics because he thinks they’re upset with him, but they quickly tell him that they’re just so happy for him to be figuring out who he is and that he trusts them enough to share it with them. Pyro has always been a very accepting parent and was never one to push gender roles on their kid, but they know it can still be scary even if you know your parent will be supportive. They’ll give him a huge hug and go bake him his favorite flavor of cake in celebration. They’re super excited to help him transition, and they’re supportive no matter how he wants to go about it. 

Soldier - Since Soldier is such a man’s man, his kid is extremely anxious over telling him she’s a girl. But Soldier accepts it pretty much immediately, without a second thought. It makes almost no difference to him what gender she is, as long as she’s still his kid and she can still snap a neck if she needs to. He would have no problem switching to the new pronouns, and he will very loudly correct anyone who uses the wrong ones. He’ll help her with her transition if she asks and he’d happily pay for new clothes, but he won’t go out of his way to treat her differently. They’re still the same kickass family, which is all that matters. 

Heavy - He figured out a while ago that his child was a trans boy, but he didn’t say anything because he didn’t want to force his son to come out to him before he was ready. So when his son finally tells him, he just goes, “Da. Is good.” He gives him a pat on the head and that’s that. Since he knew it was coming, he doesn’t have any problem using he/him pronouns. He’ll offer to help his son work out more so he can bulk up and pass better. The only trouble he has is that if his kid wants to change his name to something more masculine, Heavy at least wants to help him choose, since he gave him his birth name to start with and he thinks its only fair he gets to help pick his new name.

Demo - He just laughs at himself for not having realized sooner and he says something like, “Well that’s the shock of the century!” He’ll simply ask his daughter what he can do to make her happy and more comfortable, since that’s the most important thing to him. He’s so proud of her for figuring this out, and he sees it as a wonderful thing they should be celebrating. He’s kind of ecstatic about it, and if his daughter is okay with him telling other people, he’ll keep going around like, “Did you hear I have a daughter? Isn’t that great? Can you believe that?” He’ll want to throw her a big ‘coming out’ party when/if she’s ready for that. He doesn’t normally send out formal invitations for parties but he will for this one because he wants to print cheesy “It’s a girl!” cards.

Engineer - He had thought something like this might be the case, but he didn’t want to make any assumptions. When his kid tells him that he’s a trans guy, Engie sits down with him on the porch for a nice long talk about it. He completely accepts him, but he wants to understand it better, so he asks why he feels that way, how he came to that conclusion, and what he wants to do now that he’s figured that out. He’s a good listener and he’s quick to help his kid work through any problems he has with his gender and his transition. He’ll say something along the lines of, “Listen. I’m your father. It’s my job to make sure you’re safe and happy, and if this is how you gotta be happy, I’m all for it.” He knows how hard this is going to be for his son, though, so he makes sure to make it clear that if his son ever needs help and support, he’s going to be right there for him.
