I really like this house that I found when looking at modern Tokyo architecture for a cheaper price. I wish this house could be like....in between my university and the Woolworths/restaurant district that's close by.
If I ever post Pop Rocks to this blog, please refer to this cool house for when the 'present' part of the story takes place.
#I also just really like architecture#there's lots of neat houses in Melbourne#my favourite is the style with what I call 'wizard spires'#I would kill for a house with a wizard spire to do my writing in#and a big bath#but please enjoy this neat house#it's roughly 288k in AUD#for my Americans that is 183k#not bad for 3beds in a major city!

#also good reference material for all you fellow mario artists out there#super mario bros#movie screenshots#movie screencaps#mario movie#the super mario brothers#The Mushroom Kingdom#I remember when this clip was released and no kidding it's what really sold the movie to me beyond the bro relationship#I love this place's design so so so sooo much#they could've gone the easy route by keeping it just a quaint forested mushroom town like in many of the games#but they went crazy with this quaint yet vibrant architecture and it's so much fun

the good news is that ive made a flashcard set of church architectural terms. the bad news is that im not very good at making flashcards. read my tags to know how i fucked up + my sources boy
#i think i put definitions and terms reversed#i also put pictures on some of the answers for further clarification but for Matching and Multiple Choice it just gives the answer away LOL#so certain modes dont work like Spell#i really just made it with writing the answer down in mind#a lot of it is taken from How To Read A Church by Denis McNamara and some architecture glossaries that ic an link to if interested#its by no means the end all be all of compilations..#ill fix it. at some point. but i really made it just for me so who knows#i do know i plan to update for errors and just. adding things i didnt talk about#birbwellspeaks#churches#architecture

2024 reads / storygraph
Far Removed
book 1 in a character-focused sff (with dystopian/horror elements) duology
set on a moon city populated by a highly intelligent semi-aquatic species with a strictly stratified society
a well-off politician / college director who is trying to use his position to challenge the corrupt upper strata organises to have one of his students smuggled out of the city after she’s accused of insurgency
he’s helped by maskad worker - those who are forcibly magically disfigured and made to wear masks, becoming the lowest strata - at the college, who’s able to guide the student to safety
but they catch the attention of powerful people, leading the two of them to be drawn together, developing a complicated friendship
#Far Removed#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#this is suuuuper interesting! I really enjoyed it!#I feel like I don’t read too many sff books with like; truly unique and new worldbuilding (that also have character/narratives that I enjoy#I liked the slow paced worldbuilding-and-character focused narrative.#Not everything is revealed about the world initially; but just naturally woven in. It’s all super interesting#from the knyad species and their society; to the biology and architecture details#and magic (which - is basically science using a particular substance).#There’s lots of discussion about class and disability too.#There is a glossary at the end which is useful if you’re feeling confused initially!#Love the contrasts of the two MCs & how they interact with the world and their developing friendship - can’t wait to see where that goes.#there’s a brief touch on the fact that since the species don’t procreate; relationships are different and less significant to them - though#There’s some flirting and hope for a relationship for once MC but it solidly doesn’t go anywhere#no romance#also: I always love when I’m reading a fantasy/sci-fi book and people use bicycles. like just the normal kind.#apidecca duology

It's always interesting to hear about people's weird/unexpected "alternate life paths". Like, something that you could have done with your life, a job you almost took, a school you almost went to, etc - that was still actually realistic enough that it could have happened, but NOW it seems to not suit your current personality.
Like for example, I currently hate advertising (how manipulative it is, brands trying to be 'relatable', social media amplifying it to an obnoxious extreme, etc.) so much that even seeing a little ad before a youtube video is grating to even witness, but there was a point in time where I was genuinely seriously considering going into marketing/making commercials as a career lol. Or like, I have a relative who was very inclined to be a pastor when they were younger, even though today they're a super strong atheist, etc. etc.
#BECAUSE I knew I really liked filming and editing things and doing set design and costume design (from having done little bits of that#here and there in media classes and my own stuff - i used to be a lot more into making videos than I am now). BUT I was always thinking#that a movie is WAAY to big and long. even a short film. So I was trying to think of ways I could still like#have the fun of scouting locations to film and dressing up actors and etc. etc. without it having to be a Huge Million Dollar Production#on tv show or movie level. SO then I was thinking about like... just doing commercials. Or music videos. Like shorter things where I still#get the fun of the filming and everything but it's less of an intensive long term project.#So there is an alternate version of me (I suppose if i somehow did not end up having physical and mental health issues#as badly somehow.. or like.. randomly came into wealth and was able to pay my way through a nice college despite missing#days constantly being out because I'm sick or something lol) that works in some corporate advertising office coming up with commercials#and directing or filming them or doing the sets for them or something in that general vicinity.#I also was considering being a corporate psychologist. or whatever its called.. oh from google:#''Industrial and organizational (I/O) psychologists study and assess individual group and organization dynamics in the workplace''#I don't think I even knew what the job entailed. I was at the time just thinking like.. the type of person that comes into a business offic#and gives everyone personality assessments or does MBTI or big-5 testing crap for whatever reason that some businesses get that#done for people. Really i just wanted to be in a Corporate Big Office setting yet still do psychology. Because I used to be really fixated#on living in a big city. Like the ideas of everything being walkable. picking up a coffee in the morning. walking to my job in a Big#Skyscraper Building. people watching in a huge hotel lobby for lunch. flying frequently (I love airplanes and airports aesthetically).#living in an apartment with a giant window overlooking the city. etc. etc. BUT that was before i had really BEEN to a city. Then I actually#hung around a city a few times and went places and I was like... AUGh... The Sensory Overwhelm.. cars people lights loudness noise scary#everything happening all at once. etc. etc. (though even when I wanted to live in a city i NEVER strove for the Night Life. when i say I#enjoy city imagery I mean like... in the day time. Many people who like cities talk about The Night Life and post pictures of cities all#lit up at night and clubs and dancing and restaurants. none of that EVER appealed to me. perhaps a sign I am not a real city person. Like#I am NOT standing in a crowded bar full of loud people in the middle of the night lol.. get AWAY from me!!) but I do adore the#architecture of like bright white clean sterile modern spaces like huge airport lobbies or malls or etc. I think thats what reminded me of#city and what I liked about the idea of that life. Like I always LOVED the layout of schools and hospitals and trainstations and public#transport in general. Though even then I knew enough that I would not be a good architect/city planner. so I guess my adoration for those#spaces was merely to be channeled into LIVING there. but then I realized I didn't even really want to do that that much. I mean I still#definitely aim to live NEAR a city. like the little areas outside of it. I would never live in a rural place 4 hours from anything. I liter#ally just COULDNT since I need close access to hospitals sometimes lol. But I used to want to live in the CENTER of citites like high rise#condo. and now I'm like.... eh....... perhaps a smaller quieter walkable space nearby lol.. ANYWAY.. alternate me in my Business Suit eheh

As someone who went to Germany and spent like 70% of the time in churches, Von karma sibling growing up Christian head canons is so fucking personal to me
#ace attorney#von karma siblings#miles edgeworth#franziska von karma#if anyone is curious the reason was i was on a choral music tour with my schools chapel choir#a series of words that i know require so much explaining but take it#german church architecture is fucking bomb though just saying#absolutely stunning#i may dislike almost everything about Christianity in practice but they did go hard with the aesthetic#mvk would be Christian. he just would. he has that christan religious flair#i bet he like talked all the time about how laws come from religion#he like said one prayer about Gregory and thought he was fogiven and in no eay in the wrong#and Miles spent every fucking waking second there thinking he could never be forgiven for murdering his father#he probably becomes an atheist after he moves back to America because he needs that rational explanation for everything#but probably still thought he was damned because the only thing thay can over come Edgeworth's insistance on logic is his self hatred#fran probably had such a fucking complex about being a perfect Christian but it probably gets deconstructed eventually as she recovers#honestly i think its gone by 2-1 probably due to her father being a perfect christian but also a murderer#because she is really chill with channeling#it's probably something she loses when MVK dies

Hello it is me, I am back again with weird questions the necessity of which remains questionable but I thought if there was one person in this entire world that cared, it would be you.
So, I rewatched the last episode of 5Ds again recently because I missed the kids and wanted to look at them all grown up again and at the beginning of the episode we get the little glimpse into Doctor Aki’s life. The camera pans over a (presumably) German city before it halts on a large building (clinic).
I had to do a double take and then google because the city seemed familiar and I came to the conclusion that it looked an odd amount like the German university city Heidelberg. (I attached pictures of the camera shot — sorry for the quality I was watching on Crunchyroll and couldn’t take any screenshots — I also attached images of Heidelberg (admittedly specifically chosen to resemble the camera shot to illustrate my point LMAO).
Characteristic for the town of Heidelberg is the river with its bridges — from what I know about it anyways. There’s also a church that, while not unique for German towns, super basic architectural structure imo (at least from afar, I looked it up and the art historians disagree with me, say it’s super unique, which actually makes my hypothesis stronger)— looks almost exactly like the one in Heidelberg. The way it is situated towards the river is all wrong, but it still seems like a weird coincidence.
Now, I am not saying Aki is IN Heidelberg (the 5ds town looks significantly larger than Heidelberg), however I am saying that I think it’s possible the person in charge of this shot may have looked at pictures of Heidelberg to inspire the town Aki goes to. Which is a crazy coincidence either way because (and you’re probably aware of that, Orchid, since you live in Germany, right?) Heidelberg is known for having the oldest and most prestigious medicine faculty in the country. I also looked up what the uni clinic looked like and it looks nothing like the building in the 5ds camera pan, but hey, a girl can dream :/
Idk if I want to believe they actually did that on purpose because it would be super obscure but once again: it would be so cool if they did and as someone who’s spend a considerable amount of time comparing (German) anime towns to the towns they’re inspired by, I love picking up on these things

"Person who cares about 5Ds-related questions whose necessity is questionable" is a title I'll happily accept, frame, and hang on my mantelpiece, thank you.
That said, well, I'll be damned! That church specifically feels like a very strong indicator that, at the very least, an animator referenced Heidelberg to get a feel for what a German city looks like here. There's also the option that it is meant to be Heidelberg, of course, in which case I'd probably go as far as saying they intentionally "futurised" (as in, enlarged) it a bit to fit 5Ds' general, futuristic vibe a little better. I could also see the nod to Heidelberg, specifically, being intentional because honestly, it'd make sense for Aki to end up there. Her parents would have definitely sent her to the most prestigious medical university they could have come up with, and we all know our girl would shine there. So maybe this isn't a coincidence, maybe someone who's interested in Germany snuck that in as a kind of nod to the city. Either way, I salute your detective work, because this particular similarity would have otherwise eluded me! (Probably because I do not, in fact, live in Germany. You're close, though!)
#yugioh 5ds#aki izayoi#akiza izinski#ask the orchid#I love background details like these#you just know someone referenced photos of Heidelberg for this#thank you for sending me this!#also I had to laugh at 'really basic church architecture'#the only people who would call a cathedral like Heidelberg's basic are people who are used to seeing churches like that all the time#(which. hi. hello. me too.)

It's stressful because I set out to put together a house that wasn't a boring minimalist box, but every nice thing I try to add to it makes me feel like it's going to come across ostentatious and extravagant, in a way that actual period houses somehow don't 😩
#also stressful that all these things do actually cost money#I've been thinking of the house as one giant work of art but as always#art costs money#i feel like some gross rich patron throwing money around#(we are very much not rich but we are trying to prioritise so that the things we don't care about are cheap and cheerful and the things that#could make the place feel more finished and add character is where we focus our funds)#it's such a dream and a privilege to be able to do this build but I'm having existential crises about it#anyway I'm mostly just sad that architecture has got to a point where if you want to add nice details#it looks really opulent and over the top#the tea cosy

Okay I usually don't talk a huge amount about my plans/ideas for lots before I'm finished with them so I don't "spoil" it (or if I don't end up finishing it lol), but this would be too random to share any other time
Road House (1989) is one of my favorite movies ever, idk why because it's not actually that good lol, but anyway I'm recreating the main film location the bar Double Deuce
One thing that is really cool about it is they actually built the building on location, and as far as I can tell they used the same building the entire duration of filming.
So not only are the interior shots "real" (ie not a separate sound stage that's physically impossible to match up with the completely different exterior shot location), but even when the building gets remodeled over the course of the plot it's still the exact same location and the same structures/architecture/rooms still exist where they were before... Basically it makes life as a TS2 builder easier lol
Anyway, what I actually wanted to talk about was that while I gathered reference screenshots, I got a closer look at the building's details, and noticed the first floor has rounded windows that are bricked up. Then when I started putting together the exterior in TS2, just looking at the shape and seeing it without the road house bar elements, it reminded me of a train station.
So did the set designers actually imagine a backstory for the plot location, making it look like an abandoned train station that got repurposed into a bar? idk but that'd be cool
#it could also just be the common southern architecture thing where you have a really long porch and the rest is a coincidence#and nobody cares about Road House so it's not like I'll ever get a straight answer either way lol#but even when I'm creating just for fun I usually put enough thought in to consider why something exists and looks how it does#so it doesn't seem THAT farfetched to imagine some set designers who got to build a whole ass building came up with a fake history for it

(copy/pasting this last paragraph bc i literally hit the mobile image limit tumblr when i get you:)
also. i think chiaki wants in one day after seeing them. nagito is Immensly upset about this but keeps his composure . because now hajime is his knees and that's fine too.. i hink chiaki's trying to be careful to not dirty but hajimes like "u cant garden right if ure too scared of getting kinda dirty! god made dirt and dirt dont hurt ^o^" (this is also how he justifies eating slightly dirted from dropping food. i mean he is a farmboy i dont doubt he wouldnt od that.) LOLL toodles ^w^
—————————
OKAY. so tumblr hates fun and glitched this ask out so i couldn’t answer it but i do not care i Will Answer It.
@spinecurlingmice (@ing you so u get the notif) i could kiss you on the mouth MWWWAH this is gorgeous and lines up so well with things i already have in mind for priest au. literally everything here fits into the canon i have in mind it’s perfect. i’ve been wanting to do more worldbuilding and such but i get really tired (lots of research…. lots and lots of googling) and you’ve done such an important thing for me by finding incredible plant symbolism. mwwah mwah mwah thank youuuu <333 obsessed with a lot of this but this post is long as hell already so it’s tags time
#ask#mice#priest au#i really really love how hajime being there gets nagito to put more effort into the church#through hajime’s sacrifice of his own self worth and determination he betters his community#GOD that’s such good metaphors. also keeping up appearances yumyum#obsessed with your plant choices. dahlias have so much fun symbolism it is SO clever to include them… aren’t they toxic too..#the kmda checking out hnta while he gardens… i actually think hnta would be kind of oblivious to this at first#he always feels like he’s being watched at church. like there’s eyes boring into him at all times#…he must finally be feeling the presence of God!#OH and the cash thing… ur so real#without sharing too much. when kmda inherited the church from his parents he also inherited a fair amount of. tithings.#he likes to keep the church humble so he doesn’t spend too much at first. just keeps the place clean and maintained and pretty#but not like. opulent. fanciest thing in there is the stained glass#but then hajime shows up. and all these little purchases start to appear— and; well; they better the church so it’s justified#hajime being proud of having His Watering Can like a dog boasting about its tags… so good#naming the lily ‘shelby.’ he’s so cute i love him#ALSO HNTA ESSENTIALLY WORKING TWO JOBS…. ‘i’m devoting myself to the lord this is good this is good’ (he is exhausted)#also ‘god made dirt and dirt don’t hurt’ that’s soooo cute. no u don’t understand how cute that is#ohhhhh my little farm boy…. :((( into torment realm you go hurry along now#i need to get some architecture sketches of the town down…. general city plan + some of the important buildings#that’ll be kinda fun to figure out actually

flashbacks to dialogue that happened less than a minute ago are annoying and a little insulting for obvious reasons, unless it's in bad buddy episode 5 [2/4] and pat is having entirely serious sepia toned flashbacks to fifty seconds ago while almost shoving a set of drumsticks he hasn't even paid for yet up his nose. then it's brilliant and world changing
#don't mind me i'm just chewing glass today#when the architecture band starts playing at freshy day and ink says to pat hey isn't that the song you two played that christmas?#it's like yeah... but that's a maddeningly casual way to refer to an event that in the context of the series wide metaphor#is really more like their parents caught them making out in a closet. and then pran got sent to boarding school over it#and NOW pran is up there on stage playing that same song again. looking right at pat when he announces it. but plaYING IT with WAI#and not intentionally. not in a mean sort of way. because pran doesn't know#he doesn't KNOW that pat's been shoving drumsticks up his nose while being struck cold by Love Signs#because how could he. all he knows is that very recently pat was sighing in relief that pran isn't his rival for ink. because pat likes ink#pran does NOT know that in the (very short. more than fifty seconds but still very short) meantime#pat has tried to figure out if ink might like him back. pat has in the process accidentally figured out that HE might like pran#AND pat has tried to confess his feelings to ink only for her to go. very kindly. are you sure you like me that way? i don't think you do#(because he's the wrONG SIBLING. she likes the OTHER SIBLING. which is hilarious but a different thing to go insane over)#and it's like. pran doesn't know!!! pran is just having a day like any other. pran has Known forever#he doesn't KNOW that when they're standing there surrounded by guitars (it's essentially a gay bar. don't even get me started)#(because that's a joke but it's also not. not really. it is but it's not. you know)#!! that when they're standing there surrounded by guitars. pat is suddenly going OH. in sepia toned flashbacks to fifty seconds ago#when they were ALSO standing there surrounded by guitars btw. which is the point. nothing has changed but maybe everything has#it's the same thing it was fifty seconds ago but maybe it's not. maybe pat suddenly hears the music that's been playing forever#and maybe this is way too many fucking tags. i don't even think this is the glass i was chewing originally#*#bad buddy#bad buddy the series

the most romantic thing ever to be honest with you. i think statues and carvings in klingon culture run a really cool and compelling parallel and make a fantastic aid to the function/beauty of storytelling and poetry and song. there's a few examples of the importance of stone carving in the show/beta-canon, including of course worf's statue of kahless and morath, but there's also a famous historical statue of the lady lukara on qo'nos that was personally carved by kahless with a bat'leth, and the hall of heroes on qo'nos/hall of warriors on ty'gokor are full of statues that serve as a really proud reminder of their history

i think that sculpture work and carving being a big part of klingon culture really fits into the ideas that were introduced in the paq'batlh by marc okrand- according to him, in klingon music, beauty is the result of two forces opposing eachother, and the blurring of the line between the audience and the story is a natural part of klingon opera- the audience is encouraged to join in the narrative and become part of it.
i can see this being a natural result of the sculpting process- the sculptor and his material, the story he's trying to tell through the carving, the shaping and the molding- he shapes the material, and the material shapes the story, and in that way the line is blurred- the sculptor becomes part of the story he's trying to tell because he has to form it, and the opposition between the two of them- the material vs the sculptor represents this honorable challenge and this potential and this battle, because it needs to be shaped into the kind of narrative you want to tell the way you'd like it to be told. and the end result is organic in that same way, it evolves and changes as you work (or in the case of oral storytelling, as it's retold and shared), and just. i don't know if this is intentional across the whole show/franchise but i can really see the way this art form in particular might become a big part of klingon culture and history
#diary#there's of course a cleaner comparison if i were to use weaving and stuff but i am not aware of an example of klingon textiles in the show#perhaps the novels.... family crests might be woven which is So Loaded but im not too sure on that#also did you know the castle in suto'vo'qor is made of stone? that may not be relevant it could just be a metaphor for permanence but. slay#the paq'batlh also has stone carvings of a klingon opera which are like musical scores which is sweet lol its like no' Hol#and pictographs#i think theres also something to be said about architecture and how that might enjoy a more elevated position in klingon culture#long-standing buildings really traditional and grand and just. Klingon. you know#but most of what i imagine about the way qo'nos looks i got from pathways and the few times we see it in the shows#i have yet to see the movies!

growing up by chicago has spoiled me rotten. i visit any other major metropolitan city and my reaction is always …oh! is that it?
#the only other metropolis that’s ever truly impressed me was tokyo. good god i LOVED tokyo#though to clarify I’m talking specifically about metropolises (and what makes a metropolis good) here#there are tons of cities I’ve been to that are incredibly impressive by other metrics#(Istanbul’s unique location; Florence’s historical architecture; Seville’s food; etc.)#but Chicago is just a truly good CITY. perfect size diverse walkable on a waterfront gorgeous architecture nice people. i love it sm#London really impressed me as a teenager but lost the allure as I grew up (a lot of my moms family relocated there so I went often)#woof#anyway I’m in LA for the first time right now and tell me why it’s like 30 different suburbs shoved together#it’s only my second day so I’m not hardcore judging yet!! gonna let an opinion develop. I get the feeling#there’s tons of good culture here but it’s fragmented and you need to go looking for it#also the wealth inequality is horrifying. they weren’t kidding#it’s SO EXPENSIVE EVERYWHERE#some family friends took us out walking to santa monica pier last night and they had to take a break like 20 minutes into the walk#because they fucking drive everywhere!!!#anyways. i feel like i need to give nyc another chance too but i don't know when i'll get to go#anyways again. chicago sweep. best city in da world.

I wish I could post some of my photography from today, but it's a bit too specific so I don't wanna dox myself shkfkgkg but ahhhh man I love taking pics whenever I go to the city 🥰
#i love taking pics when im w other people#cause theres a group mentality w taking pics yknow?#<- like if you see someone take a pic of smth your brain is automatically like 'ah! i should take a pic too!!'#but i picked my phone particularly for the camera#so inevitably the other person always ends up being like#'ill leave the photography to you. send the pics later?'#the pics i took today are such good wallpaper material#but unfortunately im p attached to my f1 backgrounds#but my friend said they were good wallpaper material#and i finally got back home and checked and ahhhh not to brag but my framing is so good :)#*also abt my day out 🤭#i love classical music and its so cool seeing it live BUT#unless its a loud dramatic piece(ex. Holst's Mars) or one you know pretty well#oh my god it puts me to sleep i feel so bad 😭#its just too cozy and dark in the concert hall and i kept feeling myself drifting off#also i will say. i usually think that: European city architecture > american city architecture#but theres some really beautiful historic buildings in my city#and i realize its really silly for me to think that theres no great sights in america bcs#i get that same 'wow' feeling whenever i see certain buildings here#catie.rambling.txt

literally what is it about japanese artists and japanese philosophy that has me turning to them every other month just to find myself so utterly and completely at home!!!!!
#IT'S IN EVERYTHING WHAT THE FUCK!!!!#my fav genre of music my fav artstyle my fav philosophies and outlooks on life my fav stories my fav EVERYTHING#like if i dont know the artist of a piece i go ''i have a feeling this is a Japanese artist''#and then i look them up and yep!#it's fucking mesmerising really. i mean i did grew up on a diet of japanese culture since i was a wee lil kid but#literally no other culture reflects my inner life like they do. they just fucking get it in ways i can't even explain#a few days ago i was watching a Japanese architect explain the importance of shadows and darkness in Japanese architecture#how they believe darkness makes space for the true self to come forward so the older Japanese structures were always designed in a way#as to allow for a lot of darkness; especially in tea rooms#like. they get me!!!!! it's not even a gothic thing it's just the ability to exist within yourself and exist with your own mystery#fuck i love introspective cultures!!!!!#It also says a lot that the last utterly exceptional story i got into was Blue Eye Samurai#with one half american and one half Japanese producers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#like on a foundational level far eastern asian philosophies siiing to meeeee.#not the bastardized western version of them. the original thing#anyway please check out yukiko_skri's sculptures on Instagram!!!!
