This is the event you've been waiting for all year. There isn't anything like it for miles. You've mostly come in support of your boyfriend, John Price, and to experience a good scare.

During October, John enjoys earning extra money by working as a scare actor at different attractions. This is his first year working for a local business and not some large amusement park.

You may be touched, carried, restrained, pushed, pulled, separated, fed, played with, and asked to participate in various activities.

This is the adult corn maze. Something special only on certain nights. John wanted you to come specifically to this event, mostly to see all their hard work, but to also have a bit of fun. You already know what he'll be dressed as, but John is the protective type. He doesn't want anyone else touching you.

"You're John's woman." The security guard at the front entrance gives you a kind smile.

"I am."

"Said you were coming." He waves you in and then gives you a little salute. "Have fun."

The entrance to the corn maze is narrow, allowing for two people to stand shoulder-to-shoulder but nothing more. As you approach a T-interaction, a scare actor in torn jeans, a plaid button-up, and a stringy blond wig roams the area. Their shoulders and legs jerk about like a roaming zombie, and when you approach, they block the path to the right, forcing you off to the left.

Either John has planned this or you're simply following a direction. He said he would find you. That he'd chase you down.

Out in the country, there isn't any light other than the moon overhead and that which the maze provides. Most of the lights are red and dampened, giving the space a blood-tinged feel. As you walk, the cornstalks sway and move. You hear others in the maze cry out or giggle. A few times, you come across other visitors. One woman is cornered before being lifted up and over a scare actor's shoulder, snatched and separated from her group.

Will John find you like this? Will he corner you? Take you away and do with you what he likes?

As you take a turn, you find a wall of darkness. You cannot see the other end of the corn. No light reaches it. Adrenaline spikes in your gut, creeping up to your chest. For most of the walk, you've been enjoying yourself, but this stirs up a sense of dread.

There is nothing dangerous. Nothing sinister. You are fully aware of this and yet your body's physical response is the exact opposite of what your brain is telling you.

You're swallowed up by the dark. There are no stars, and the moon is currently covered by clouds. Every step forward only increases the creeping anxiety. Your heart thunders in your chest, drowning out all noise.

Something brushes against your right side. You jerk away from the sensation, knocking into corn stalks on your left.

Have you strayed that far over?

You reach out, attempting to find your bearings and a sense of direction. Moving left puts you into the corn. Moving right is open air and—

A large, muscled arm wraps around your waist. A scream claws up your throat, but before it emerges, a hand clamps over your mouth, stifling your cry. Something long and slightly hooked brushes against the side of your face, the tip catching on the front of your jacket. Instinct drives you. Reaching up to touch it, you find no blade or any sharpened weapon.

It's a mask. A plague doctor's mask.

John.

The hand over your mouth slowly descends, resting against the front of your throat. The grip is firm but not painful. It’s a show of dominance and a command for submission. You're drawn against a warm body and hardness.

"That you, John?"

There is a brief stretch of silence before his familiar husky voice answers. "Ready to run, love?"

You nod and John releases you. "Go," he whispers, and you take off.

As you charge forward, you're not sure if John is following. The darkness is almost absolute and you crash headlong into the corn before stumbling backward and righting yourself.

Turning left, you move ahead, only to emerge into a red-lit area with stacked hay. They create natural barriers, and the perfect place for anyone to hide behind. But John is behind you. Your path is clear.

As you navigate around the stacks, a figure steps out from behind the final row. John's silhouette is unmistakable. The plague doctor mask is only confirmation.

You come to halt, nearly slipping as your shoe catches on some flattened corn. Walking backward and away from John's casual stroll, you bump into a stack of hay. It's sturdy, and doesn't topple forward, but it startles you all the same.

You glance away from John for a moment—a single second. When you return your attention to him, you find the space completely empty. Spinning in a circle, you realize you're alone, at least to the naked eye.

John could still be watching somewhere in the dark. Tentatively, you make your way forward and into another stretch of empty corn. This area lacks light, but the clouds move at the perfect moment, revealing a dark figure at the other end before another turn.

John's masked head tilts to the side. There are shrieks and screams from somewhere behind you. Going forward is the only option.

You start slowly, creeping forward. John remains perfectly still until the last possible second. He lunges, and you step to the side, shrieking, running for all your worth. John follows, easily keeping pace. You are no match for his endurance even as you truly attempt to outpace him. The thrill pumping through your blood is thunderous. You're no longer scared, just excited.

You want John to catch you.

A few more turns in the corn and a fist grabs the back of your jacket. You're yanked to a stop, crashing into John as he hauls you against him. The plague mask is pushed up, at least enough for him to bend you backwards a bit and claim your mouth with a possessive kiss. Heat shoots right through you, swirling downwards toward your pussy.

Our next group is the unique order, Eurypygiformes, which is composed of two living species within two families: Rhynochetidae (“Kagu”) and Eurypygidae (“Sunbittern”).

The Kagu (Rhynochetos jubatus) (image 1 and gif below) is a crested, long-legged, bluish-grey bird endemic to the dense mountain forests of New Caledonia, restricted to the main island of Grande Terre. Its beak has “nasal corns”, structures covering its nostrils, a unique feature not shared with any other bird. It is nearly flightless, and spends all its time on or near the ground. Its bright red legs are long and strong, enabling the bird to travel long distances on foot and run quickly. Its crest is used to display to other Kagu, and is barely noticeable when at rest. Its wings are also used for display. The Kagu is exclusively carnivorous, feeding on a variety of animals, with annelid worms, snails, and lizards being favorites. Kagu are territorial, maintaining year-round territories of around 10–28 hectares (25–69 acres). They have a clan-based social organization, with families composed of one breeding female and one to three breeding males. WHAT THE FUCK IS THE BEAKER CASTLE EVEN - A SimPE Deep Dive

Alright, so after stumbling upon some of the Beta pics on the Russian TheSims.cc site and this analysis post about the Beaker mansion, I became deeply curious if some of this would be reflected in the lot relationships. After all, some characters like Viola, Kelly, on top of several others could be found when digging through the raw and somewhat encrypted code of lots.

By now it's pretty clear that the Beaker home once belonged to this dude and his army of girlfriends (definitely check out the post I mentioned earlier). On top of that Loki (and possibly Circe) seems to have gone through at least two iterations before eventually settling on their final forms.

And on top of that whenever you scan the mansion in a completely new game, you will find fingerprints of primarily deceased Sims everywhere!

Now to get to the Sim relationships on the lot...

712 freaking Sim Relationships, all of which are unknown. Some of which still have stats set such as married, friends, relationship scores, etc. I tried comparing this to other lots in their neighborhood and NONE even come close. Both Olive and the Smiths have around 400. The other lots have below. And the only lots that are even a tad higher in this number are the Capps and the Summerdreams which makes sense when you realise that hood went through at least one other iteration before turning into Veronaville.

Now I wondered if the encrypted code (despite being very hard to read due to being partially encrypted) had any old Sim remnants left in there. And yep, several even. Many of which even have information such as their gender, hair, clothes and age in there. So lemme go over some of them:

1. First one, a guy who's name is partially encrypted so it will never fully be visible. It's not Johnny cause Johnny also has his character file on this lot.

A male teen with brown hair who used to wear the "tmbodyhoodedsweatshirtboardshorts" + the "tmhairhatcap" hairstyle.

2. Second is another teen, this time by the name of Zeeshan. He had black hair, the bucket hat hairstyle and wore the hooded sweatshirt, except with pants this time around (and grey apparently?).

3. The third was an adult male Sim by the name of Kenneth with black hair. Based on his info he was likely meant to be a Gardener Sim.

4. The fourth was one named Kana... Possibly a longer name cause once again the code becomes a bit shambled here. She too was meant to be a Gardener as seen by her outfit and hair data. Her hair would have been brown.

5. Elle, another female Gardener Sim, this one having red hair.

6. Vasyl, an adult male Sim who wore the busdriver outfit. Sadly his hair data seems to be blocked behind the code. For funsies I like to give the name to Bald Beta Loki, since he gives off that vibe. BUT, I think this was an NPC busdriver due to the outfit.

7. Joanne, an adult female Sim with an unknown hair colour in corn rows style and the classy afbodyjacketturtlesweaterdressboots. Sadly her ID is hidden behind the encrypted code, so it's hard to fully make out.

All of these Sims appear to be NPC/Townie Sims. None of them match ANYONE in the Beta pictures. And the current Townies/NPCs seem to have replaced them. Interestingly enough, those that were NPCs are still NPCs and those that were Townies are still Townies. Making me wonder if this is a thing that translates to other Sim IDs too. That Sims that were Townies in earlier iterations are still Townies in their new form. Same for NPCs and yep, Playables. This is merely an assumption I'm making on what I'm finding here, but if anyone can help research this further, that would be greatly appreciated, especially as this could mean the Viola ID may not belong to Viola Monty.

Viola is an odd case cause no outfit, hair or other data can be found in the lot file and she's only ever mentioned once in the context of lines filled with "sleep in pyjamas". But for now I cannot say anything with certainty unless more remnants of these old Sims could be found somewhere. OR, if these files could be read in its entirety which is quite difficult.

It's very hard to get a Sim ID attached to a lot (believe me I tried) and often times seems to rather happen accidentally than intentionally. Moving a Sim out or having a Sim die usually removes the data they once held to that lot. Good example is Loki in my current Strangetown who lived on this lot all of his life and when he died he had no remnants left on this lot.

REGARDLESS! The Beaker lot is ancient and seems to have been ground for a ton of testing, Sims and many more things. No wonder the Beakers got this home with its incredibly shady history. Half of the beta town was partying here!

Vio in this instance doesn't really try very hard to make her human form look feminine, but it's on brand tbh. Even the usual Vio of this au is somewhat ambiguous.

I have a few lore tidbits below the cut if anyone is interested in how demons operate here. Not entirely related to the yuri, but that pops up a bit, too.

So, hhh I'm still getting used to writing again, it takes me forever.

A lotta supernatural entities in gas station au are gender neutral by default. Some will prefer to present a specific way, which isn't uncommon, but for the most part, unless they're interacting with humans to some degree, supernaturals tend to just remain ambiguous.

Vio in particular doesn't care about the binary, but goes by he/him pronouns simply because it's what most humans refer to him by. If one day the others switched it up and started using she/her or they/them or some other combination for Vio, I don't think Vio would care. It's not something Vio is concerned about.

Red, and to a lesser extent, Shadow, are examples of supernatural entities that, despite having more neutral-looking true forms, identify with and prefer masculine terms. In a gender-flipped version of the story, it would be much the same. Just like, flipped.

Along that line of thinking, when gender-flipped, Vio might go by she/her just because female spiders are seen as being more vicious, and she'd find that amusing. She'd also get to remain tall in human form, since female spiders are usually bigger than male spiders (that's why Vio's human form is short normally).

Also, unrelated to all that, I just want it to be known that female!Red is inexplicably more southern than regular Red. The accent is way more noticeable.

The bug girl eventually signs up for her nation's space force (for reference, her "homeworld" is an O'Neill Cylinder), becoming one of the specialized warships of her people thanks to the total consciousness transfer technology of her people (as opposed to the copy-paste system of Soma and Invincible)... Copy-pasting a "soul" is possible. As for the warship she became, it uses fusion propulsion and is armed to the teeth with lasers and auto-cannons, her front outright having an x-ray cannon capable of outright disintegrating any ship unfortunate enough to stumble in front of her.

Very clearly inspired by Asuka and her mech... I'll eventually get around to watching Evangelion, so plz don't spoil. Also, while I haven't been playing it, I do love the designs of the ships from "Children of a Dead Earth."

... I dread the eventual meeting between "Mars" and these people of The Killing Stars, their launch was practically ancient history thanks to the ~natural~ lifespan of her people (only 20-25 earth years)

The next is President Reidmen of the alternate US the story takes place in, he's more or less a stand-in combination of Mitt Romney, Regan, the Bushes, and a few tiny hints of Trump for added "good" measure. Unlike most stories, I'm trying to make him seem "not" evil despite the fact that he's absolutely creampieing the economy and quadrupling down on bombing the fuck out of Afghanistan, Iraq, and Palestine... Unfortunately for him and his shareholding buddies, the Superman (Delroy/The StarKnight) stand-in of the story refuses to let the US and Israel continue to "Manifest Destiny" and sending children to die "fighting tewwism" like he, his friends, and his brother did in Vietnam. The monstrous form isn't something he turns into, but how the StarKnight slowly begins viewing him as the "early" story goes on... also he's just really afraid of Dinosaurs, to the point where he couldn't watch Jurassic Park till he had his nuke-proof flying neutron-star body (he still had the lights on).

The thing about Riedmen is that he doesn't just sit around plotting to further bomb the Middle East, he has hobbies, he has fear, he has a corn farm and a family. He, much like Del, loves model train sets, and thanks to his wealth, it's far more impressive than our main protags, he has four shelter mutts and heavily advocates for the humane treatment of these animals, not because it'll make him look good, but because he actually cares, yet in the same breath will glorify any and all drone strikes Delroy failed to stop for it was "Al-Qaeda/Isis hiding in the Schools/Mosques/Hospitals." He also helps with the legalization of gay marriage in this world's US.

It was simply too funny to not have a Republican President with the last name "Reidmen." I also tried giving him a face that's either kind-looking or somewhat creepy for he is a very clear criticism of how Obama drone struck the hell out of so many children and how it was sold to children like me as a good thing, the American news at the time portrayed those mechanical abominations as some sort of "Super Hero" or "Angel." He has a mustache simply as it's been a very long time since a president had one and I thought it'd make him a bit more unique. The OFF/Paranoia Agent influence is real

If you find them, the older posts aren't really cannon in terms of design, but are cannon in personality. The story itself would be paneled in a right-to-left flow specifically after Mob Psycho and the Pokemon Adventures manga, though I'd attempt to give it a more "Watchmen" feeling for the backgrounds and such.

Hi! I was wondering if you knew or had any sources on pigments in corn snakes? It's my understanding that they get a lot of their red/orange/yellow pigment as they mature, from the carotenoids in their prey, but also I know they can still have some red coloration even freshly hatched, so... what's that coming from? Do we know what exact pigment (or pigments?) it is that they're producing? I've seen "erythrin" mentioned, but I've been struggling to find any information about it

Corn snakes have three pigments that they express: melanin (black), xanthin (yellow), and erythrin (red), which you've pointed out!

All corn snake color morphs, including wild type coloration, are based on the expression and/or mutation in the expression of these three pigments.

Babies often hatch a bit redder and their colors deepen as they age. We call this "baby red" and it usually settles to brick red or rich brown by the second or third shed.

It's also common for some red and pink morphs to start to express as the snake matures. Red Factor, Redcoat, Peach, Hypo, and Bloodred morphs tend to start out looking kinda "normal-ish" and get redder/brighter orangey with age. Some keepers have even suggested that some reds are sexually dimorphic, with males displaying more red/pink tones than females and displaying brighter colors during breeding season.

The carotenoids that show up over time from food are often expressed around the jaw/neck. These can still be masked by some morphs that block both erythrin and xanthin expression, like the Charcoal (anery B) morph. Anery (anery A) will block erythrin but not xanthin, so Anery morphs often still get yellow around the jaw and throat. Genetic morph red pigment expression will generally be across the entire body and possibly also fill in the white belly checkers in some cases.

There are a lot of scholarly articles on the subject as corn snakes are a model species for snakes in genetics, so if you're searching you might want to use their scientific name: Pantherophis guttatus. This should generate more results than the common name if you're using Google Scholar or ResearchGate.

They have one adopted human boy for a child named Hato. He was around 1-2 when they adopted him, and he is fully aware he's adopted by a demon and an angel.

I saw you putting whole thing into words, what I am really grateful for, you may know my religious sideblog, on which I talk about it sometimes. Throughout my path there were 5 Archetypes I was worshipping/working with, now it came to two, which feels most closely to me. With others I still have good relationship, it's now just honouring and appreciation, rather than working.

Two Archetypes I want to ask about are: The Snake, which is pretty popular, but I want to know your opinion, because you are cool, and, the one I have most absence of information, The Deepsea Anglerfish.

Both are very dear to me, and, while, with Snake it's pretty easy find symbolism and role, with Anglerfish it's just nothing.

What would you say? What ways to connect and honour/worship/work with you would recommend?

Lets talk about these archetypes!

Starting with Snake because, as you said, they're super popular in myth and folklore and are just very well known spiritually. Snakes are associated with cycles, rebirth, poison, medicine and death (to name a few). This symbolism can vary between species (i.e. King Cobras obviously have a more royal association and venomous snakes are more likely to represent death than say a corn snake).

Snake, as an archetype, is really about transformation and transmutation - shedding skin, cycles, venom -> medicine, life -> death (and vice versa) etc. This is the basis of Snake as an archetype (in my experience).

This symbolism comes from the physical properties of snakes. They're one of the most common phobias in the world (there's interesting theories on why this is, relating to our primate instincts) making them symbols of death and fear, they can be venomous but that venom has been transformed into medicine. They grow and change and shed their skin, literally leaving their past behind.

An animal's archetype, their symbolism and their power is directly linked to their physical forms. With that in mind, let's look at the Deep Sea Anglerfish:

Most well known for their luminescent lure, Anglerfish have a illicium, or modified fin, that is alight with symbiotic bacteria. This lure draws in their prey in the darkness of the abyss. These guys have a lot of diversity but generally show quite high levels of sexual dimorphism with the most notable example being in species with "parasite males" - males are significantly smaller than females and attach to them like a sperm-producing parasite when they encounter one another, and males often die if they don't find a female.

When we look at these characteristics in the species, we can start to piece together the symbolism and archetype of the animal. These amazing fish are simultaneously representative of a light in darkness, unseen truth etc and also tricksters and manipulation. They're a sign of obsession and death, as well as survival against all odds.

If I, personally, were to work with Anglerfish, I would look to them for knowledge on finding hidden truths but also on finding what I need and getting by in difficult times. I would work with them perhaps as a trickster-hunter, as a spirit that knows darkness so well they would be blinded by any light that is not their own.

I've already rambled way too much so I'll wrap up!!! I'd say that for working with either of these Archetypes, the ways of connection are not too different from any other Archetype:

Create: draw, paint, write poetry etc that explores and celebrates these archetypes and their complexities

Read, watch documentaries etc, learn as much about them as you can! Understand their tangible forms and you will understand them better spiritually

Protect their physical, individual forms if you can! Look at how to protect native snakes, sign petitions to stop deep sea trawling etc

Include them in your life and practice as often as is sustainable for you!

I've read Kafka on the Shore halfway through and stopped. Also that one handjob scene....no. why. He's a huge misogynist who I do not want to support. I've heard about that one scene in Norwegian Wood with the father's picture...yikes. I like literary fiction the most, which means I want well-written characters meaning all of them should be well-written and have a soul, yes even the female ones. I saw that one picture of pseudo intellectual Harry Styles being in bed reading Norwegian Wood...at this point why? Why do we not question this? I sometimes wonder if this is all an inside joke I'm not into.

2. Any CoHo/Emily Henry/Tiktok romance book

No explanation needed. I'm in a happy relationship and I don't have a son with big balls.

3. Any splatterpunk book (Eric LaRocca's books, Playground)

I like disturbing books, I have nothing against brutal/disgusting scenes and such, but it has to have a purpose. You cannot write such sick, twisted things just for shock value, because you are a writer and should at least be a good one. Splatterpunk writers don't care about that. They write the most sick, twisted things that a human could come up with. It's not revolutionary but tasteless shock. Those people don't love literature, they love gore. It doesn't help that the vast majority of those authors are men and that they let their female and their younger characters experience a lot of pain. They get away with their blatant sadism and sexism by categorizing it as "splatterpunk".

4. That Icebreaker book

Not just bc it's a tiktok romance book, but specifically bc it reminds me of that one tiktok named Kierra I think who was widely sexist and rude and evil to a hockey player's wife just bc she said she didn't want her to make anymore sexual comments about her husband and the father of her child. Wild. You should definitely look into it.

5. A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

Torture Corn really. Straight women writes queer male characters are tortures them. We've all seen it, really.

6. Any self help book

Pure Scams. It is capitalist propaganda that your problems are based of your material conditions but are purely isolated from the rest of the world and as long you buy my book in which I give you a list of what to do, you won't be happy. When you give me your money, you'll be happy, really!

It definitely doesn't help that most of those authors are white, male and rich.

7. Books with queer male romance written by straight women

I'm not saying straight women don't have the capability to write well-written male queer characters, I'm just saying that there's a pattern...

So I Watched Bucchigiri?!... (My Review)

(Before you proceed, I'll assume you watched the show but honestly you can still read it since i will limit the spoilers for those who want to watch the show)

1.First Impression/Why did i Watched it?

Youtube Ad victim (yes you read that right), the clip showing a mixture of throwing hands and humour looked interesting and fun.

(this crunchyroll ad above) IM NOT GONNA LIE, I 100% WATCHED THIS SHOW BECAUSE OF OUTA TAHIDE'S FINE ASS IN THE AD (CLICKBAIT VICTIM).

2. Story (5/10)

Laconic: A Red Aladdin style genie demon have a 300 year old beef with his blue boyfriend so now a lame loser high schooler maxs his stats and have to fight but dont get it twisted CORN ADDICITON WILL PREVAIL!

ehhh... Trashcan come to the podium. The biggest issue of this show are the plot points & certain characters motivations/personalities (ehum, Arajin. Ehum, Mahoro). Some are gear grinding when they appeared on screen. I'm not gonna dig too deep but the story sounds good on paper but when you add the unsufferabble MC, everything falls down the drains (Matakara should have been the MC).

I understand this is supposed to be a funny show but some tropes fall flat and are aggravating at best. Honestly Arajin & Mahoro are eating up most of the points for this categorie (get the lame simpery and mincest out of here). Other characters and the storyline as a whole did their thing regardless of the cliché they carried BUT ITS HARD LOOKING PAST THE BAD.

3. Characters (9/10) (THE BEST PART)

Before diving deeper, Bucchigiri is a mid show with AMAZING & GREATLY DESIGNED CHARACTERS. Aside from my thirst for Outa, I've looked up other characters before watching the show anf their designs are really good (MAPPA delivered). Which is why i'm disappointed to see them mishandled like that.

Also y'all couldnt have another female character to balance out Mahoro? (please omfg)

Yall know i will never complain about a 12 episodes anime (shout out to GANGSTA) but this serie would have benifited from more episodes with the story it was trying to go for. Because it really gave EASILY FORGIVEN and lets all dance around the campfire (wait arent yall opposite gangs or we dropping it and merging together?!.)

Like ive said the MC slowed down the watching experience because i had to actually leave and come back to later due to being so pissed off.

5. Do I Recommend?

As crazy as it sounds, i do recommend it. the 12 episodes will not take too much of your time and these characters a worthy of being love and appriciated to the fullest (the fanart is kinda dry).

In a way this series is a win for me regardless my complaints because the fights are cool as hell and its really showed me how to make great characters regardless the setting. I can see how this show could be a banger to others and it definetly can.

Something different this month - a general folklore fact, rather than a werewolf or vampire fact! It's been a while since I did one of these, so I figured it's high time I toss another one out there.

Ever heard of the Man in the Moon? Of course you have. But have you ever heard of a "bilwis?" What about "Hjúki and Bil?" How about Jack and Jill? And how are all these things actually connected?

Once upon a time, I was playing a video game called Titan Quest with my brother. We ran into a strange creature labeled a Demon that was called a "bilwis." Since the game is based heavily in real-world myth, I decided to look it up. It wouldn't be the first time I encountered an obscure piece of mythology from a video game, that's for sure (the game Age of Mythology helped me get into researching mythology at all, as a child; it's still one of my favorite games).

So first, I looked up a bilwis. A bilwis can be demonic or human and is associated with corn, which would align with what I found in the game, too. They are said to have "flying" hair, are sometimes wrapped in linen, and wear triangular hats. They often appear as whirlwinds to steal grain during harvests. Then I went, wait a minute... that sounds just like Blowhard in the game Spyro the Dragon (also one of my favorite games)!

Blowhard is a bilwis! This is OG Blowhard, by the way, not from the remasters. But you should play Spyro sometime. Fantastic games. The remasters are good, too.

Anyway, that fascinated me, because I love learning things like that. But I also found something else... I found a legend called Hjúki and Bil, which was quite the rabbit-hole. Some sources claim the bilwis is related to Bil, which is how I was led here. The bilwis is sometimes said to be a female entity (but it can also be male) and was, at one time, associated with witches - and Bil is interpreted variably to be a kenning for woman, as well as a witch. The connection between Bil and the bilwis only happened in much later time periods, however - so let's go back to the original story of Hjúki and Bil.

The tale of Hjúki and Bil comes from Norse mythology. Their names are said to mean "the one returning to health" and "instant," respectively, though scholars apparently can't entirely confirm that first one. They are brother and sister, a pair of children who follow the moon across the heavens. We know about them because of - you guessed it - Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda. There are a lot of theories around these two, but they were said to have been a pair of children, both carrying a pole on their shoulders (the pole was called Simul) and held a pail called Sæg between them. But the children were taken by Mani (the moon) from the earth, to follow the moon forever in the heavens, and "can be seen from the earth."

It is possible that Hjúki and Bil represented the waning and waxing of the moon - or they may have even represented the craters on the moon. Scholars argue about it a lot, but many of them present compelling arguments that Hjúki and Bil were the craters, which were interpreted as children with a water pail between them on a stick.

Similar modern folklore from the same regions sees the Man in the Moon as a man with a pole, often carrying wood (or else stealing it and stuck in the moon as punishment), and sometimes with a woman with a bushel. This lends more credence to the idea of Hjúki and Bil being connected to the moon - and people in the moon.

There is another connection - one with Jack and Jill, the famous nursery rhyme...

You may have already noticed some similarities to the story of Hjúki and Bil and Jack and Jill - even their names sound similar! Both stories are about two children, one boy and one girl, who fetch a pail of water.

For those of you who need refreshing on the rhyme...

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after. Up Jack got and home did trot as fast as he could caper. He went to bed to mind his head with vinegar and brown paper.

The origins of many elements of folklore, mythology, nursery rhymes, fairytales, and all their kind are always mysterious and fascinating. It's entirely possible that Hjúki and Bil are directly related to Jack and Jill, and that the latter is a retelling of the original Norse tale - and that the story of Jack and Jill fetching the pail represents the waning and waxing of the moon or the craters on the moon that we can see easily from Earth.

That covers a decent overview! There is of course a lot to all these things, as you might imagine, but I chose this time to focus on informing you about the existence of Hjúki and Bil and the bilwis at all, rather than getting deep into the debate and "conversation" around all these matters.
