ok I'm not an expert but I'm not seeing much specific info going around here, and there's a lotta Palestine solidarity protests in the UK this weekend, so here is some (including UK-specific) protest info and resources (mostly pulled whole-cloth from Twitter)

policing is heavy at Palestine protests generally

Hamas is a proscribed org under UK law. that means "inviting support" for them or "wearing clothing or displaying articles" that implies you are a supporter is a criminal offence (if you're interested, here's the full list of criminal offences from gov.uk). Palestinian flags etc are ok*, but do not have something that could be mistaken for Hamas imagery. don't go out there looking for convictions pls.

*in spite of what Suella Braverman has implied, the London Muslim Community Forum has just confirmed that the Palestinian flag is not a proscribed flag and is not banned (apologies for quoting the "we advise the met police" group but I thought it was important to have that info explicitly)

don't talk to cops. that includes the police liasion officers in blue bibs.

particularly if you're concerned about your face ending up on social media etc, but also just good practice in general (both in terms of COVID and protest safety)—mask up. cover up tattoos etc.

have bustcards or contact details for protest legal support on you. Green and Black Cross can be contacted on 07946 541 511. write the number on your arm etc.

if you witness an arrest: check if there's a legal observer nearby and if so call them over; if not: if the arrestee doesn't have a bustcard, give them one, find out where they're being taken, and contact eg GBC or a protest support line

if you have the time and can help out, there will likely be arrestee support required after—GBC tend to post callouts on Twitter for this

Actually if we want to talk about the lilienne/joyce ship I would like to bring up that it plays into the bourgeois woman’s fantasy of class dynamics in a relationship (à la lady chatterley), as well as the upper/middle class idea that their identity as women supersedes said class dynamics (and therefore they believe themselves to be in no position to oppress women of the working class) in a way that lends itself to reactionary movements like TERF ideology. As someone who lives in the uk and has been heavily affected by said ideology, joyce actually put me on high alert just by her voice and appearance.

I think it’s a mistake not to acknowledge that joyce is heavily thatcherite coded (the hair, the posh accent etc) especially when compared to lilienne who plays into the working class british woman archetype: she sounds welsh (considered a ‘lower’ accent), has young children, is a widower etc. It is fairly common to see the ‘confident mum who has to single-handedly support her young family’ in soap operas and other media, and she definitely plays into that stereotype.

Anyway, the ship is on the surface level a fun one, but let’s not overlook the framing as a one-sided and rather sinister set-up.

You make an important observation, which is that by choosing Bedelia as his (consulting) therapist when he embarked on his career in psychiatry, he set the bar for himself sky high. As you say, he could have chosen someone who would have rubber stamped his findings, thoughts, treatment plans; someone who wouldn't dig too deep into his personal psyche. But he didn't. Why?

I think the simplest answer is that Hannibal Lecter never does anything the easy way. He is no basic bitch, right? He won't wear off-the-rack suits; he gets an Italian tailor to hand sew his clothes. He won't drive just any old car; he gets a Bentley. He doesn't just commit serial murders; he makes ART out of corpses for the fun of teasing the FBI.

He's as extra as it gets, because easy isn't fun. Easy is not a challenge.

Bedelia presents a welcome challenge for him: She's wildly intelligent, experienced and capable of keeping him on his toes. She isn't satisfied with ticking boxes; she gets under his skin, shows real interest in him, and she's clearly willing to entertain morally questionable ideas.

But the thing I think Hannibal really likes about her, what initially piqued his interest and what keeps him coming back to her again and again? Her absolute insistence on maintaining appropriate boundaries with him. I mean, sure, she's willing to drink with a patient, indicating that her boundaries are flexible. But considering how successful Hannibal is at completely erasing boundaries between himself and every other character on the show, and considering she's the only person who can consistently tell him, "No", while also, you know, staying alive and well, I would argue that Hannibal considers this ability a feature not a bug.

We all need someone who can tell us directly when we've gone too far, and Hannibal needs that more than most people. With everyone else he can charm them, persuade them, even overwhelm them; even if they put up initial resistance he can bring them round to what he wants. Except with Bedelia. She is stable; she knows who she is. she can be counted on to maintain conscious control of her own actions, and that is precisely what Hannibal needs.

maybe this is a bit of a useless point to make but it does bother me sometimes that estinien’s skintone gets lightened quite a bit. I don’t necessarily blame fanartists for this bc some renders/cgi trailers make him look paler than his in game model, but I just wanted to draw some comparisons. now the lighting can vary quite a bit, but I tried finding pictures in multiple lightings for comparison

he looks a little washed out/not well lit in this image but you can still tell its the same skin tone

I don’t think this but specifically is that bad, there’s still a notable contrast between his hair and skin tone even if it looks to be a bit more tinged pink than he usually is, but it’s still comparable to fourchenault. The render though is eeeeeeeh

The countdown art also DEFINITELY makes him look a little paler. it resembles the previous render

I also wanted to point out this happened to y'shtola too somewhat. look at her renders compared to her model compared to the end walker trailer

ike she is distinctly pinker/paler as well. im not sure how the process of making the cgi cutscenes works but im fairly sure they use different models, so I generally accept that they lost some specifics in translation. there are other differences people have pointed out such as Zenos' nose being shaped differently in the end walker trailer so its bound to happen.

yshtola has a skin tone somewhat accurate design but estinien is DEFINITELY lighter. his eyes are off too, being a weirdly deep blue when his canon eyes are grey, so again it can be chalked up to lost in translation aspects but its still disappointing to see

im not really trying to argue that estinien or yshtola aren't "white" or white passing by our standards, but they really aren't pale and its kind of weird that they often get lightened in trailers/renders in estinien's case. especially when I see so much fanart drawing estinien as super bone white pale because they're probably looking at the renders that pop up first online if you search and show his whole outfit for design reference.

I do really appreciate it when I see artists draw them darker, it makes me very happy.

honestly i think ur right it's just people making a big deal out of nothing. if someone wants 2 imagine what jegulus would look like in an atyd universe then...that's fine. nobody has to read it if they don't want to. i certainly have no place 2 judge bc i included things in my own fic that were extrapolations and/or inventions that mkb likely would not have intended to/imagined including as part of her story. that's what fanfiction is tho! it is specifically someone else's take on a work that is separate + distinct from the og writer's, and nobody has to read it + treat is as gospel if they don't want to. like i honestly don't see the problem with someone writing a hyopthetical "atyd canon-compliant" fic that includes jegulus bc atyd itself is a "harry potter canon-compliant" fic that centers on wolfstar lmao. like do we see the irony there.

anyway i honestly just think that there's a portion of this fandom that is incapable of treating atyd like fanfiction and instead try to put it up on a pedestal in its own venerated category that treats it as if it is somehow simultaneously subject to much harsher + more public critique but also a piece of work that must be taken as gospel within the fandom which honestly just sucks for everyone imo. like people wouldn't care if someone's writing an atyd james pov including jegulus unless they feel entitled, in the first place, to certain representations of atyd fic that match what they view as the pure + untouchable "canon." but nobody is entitled to have a fic perfectly catered to their desires, even if it's an atyd fic! and if someone is deeply bothered and just needs to see their vision realized, then they can write their own fic and ignore the other ones.

re: the situation here, the supreme court is gonna be announcing their decision tomorrow on whether to declare the mining contract illegal/unconstitutional (actually its a bit more complicated bc they'll be repealing a specific law, but to keep it understandable lmao) which would then give justification for it to be voided. first quantum minerals will likely try to sue our government if that happens, but that'll be the next problem to deal with and people would rather know our representatives actually convey the population's will at the very least lmfao. but if the court doesn't give the decision people want to hear then shit will definitely kick off for at least a few days.

just got a like on my brooklyn 99 jessay-post from a while back which reminded me i've been thinking about the show a lot more bc my brother is currently watching it for the first time so sometimes i'll be in the room while he's watching an episode. and it's such a bizarre experience bc my brother is VERY anti-cop and that made him not want to watch the show at all until a friend convinced him to, and now he really enjoys it in this compartmentalized-way of being like "i know a lot of aspects of this are copaganda but also the character writing and comedy are objectively well done"

and as i'm rewatching bits and pieces it's bizarre bc i also had no desire to rewatch the show after it ended mostly bc of that copaganda aspect and how it fumbled its social commentary in the final season, but damn it i feel myself getting nostalgic and liking the characters. but mostly i feel myself realizing basically all the best parts of brooklyn 99, even if you try to ignore the baggage, have nothing to do with them being cops. it's just a fun group of diverse friends making jokes together! except it isn't, the cop thing will always be the elephant in the room.

i'm not going to reiterate all the points i made in that original essay bc i just reread it and even after properly revisiting brooklyn 99 i think the points i made hold up, but the main thing i think about now is actually an anecdote i heard about when they first decided to adapt "the office" for an american audience. and once of the biggest notes its american showrunners got was you can make michael scott as immature and obnoxious and ridiculous as you want, but you HAVE to make him still good at his job. american audiences won't tolerate that kind of character unless they still get results.

and then you have brooklyn 99. filled with these ridiculous characters having their own zany-and-distracting adventures week after week, but don't worry, they're "good at their job." but when their job is fundamentally an archaic institution responsible for ruining many people's lives and perpetuating the racist prison industrial complex, how "reassuring" is that quality really?

I find it extremely discouraging how a lot of the time art uploaded to be seen online becomes influenced under the constraints of monetary gain and attention.

It feels like value is placed more on what would be most successful within a wide-reaching audience rather than actual care and intention put behind the work one does.

I think this explains why a lot of art, even by really skilled artists I admire, sometimes end up becoming empty and overly similar to each other.

Hello! I really hope this doesn't come across rude or anything because it's absolutely not my intention, out just of pure curiosity and not related to ls: you mentioned not being comfortable with the cop side of the show and I've seen that a lot among american viewers. i'm not american and in my country we don't have a big issue with the police (there're of course some imbeciles here and there but we don't have civilians randomly being killed). i absolutely agree with the need of having only the right people doing the job since they hold a lot of power what I don't really understand is, who should then protect the people from burglars or abusers or scammers if there's not police? sorry if this is inappropriate, I always wonder if I missing something because I don't trust (some) people to behave appropriately in society without surveillance.

It’s a very complicated answer but it truly boils down to: the American police force as it is now is corrupt. Point blank. There’s not good apples and bad apples, the system itself is not just and is not fair and is racist. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The police have slowly throughout the course of American history been given more and more power (and more and more money) and have become even more corrupt as a result, while their power has gone unchecked and their violations of their duties to “protect and serve” have gone unpunished. This post here is short and to the point and I fully agree. Highlighting this part here as a summed up reason as to why ACAB and I hate things glorifying the job of police: “All cops have signed up to enforce a system which is oppressing marginalized people in this country on a daily basis.”
