Whenever the topic of meeting ‘celebrities’ comes up, which is a surprisingly consistent recurring theme, I always cite my interactions with you and Johnny Bench among my best.

My dad took me to Chicago Comic Con in 1992. I was 14, it was my first comic convention and this was before cosplaying played such a big part, so it was just a kid and his dad in JC Penney clothes bouncing around. For the most part, I had shit taste in comics and largely bought them for the wrong reasons. “Collectors items” and all that noise. (I bought the “Superman dies!” comic. I didn’t even like Superman.) But I also bought Death: The High Cost of Living, which was actually readable.

I got so many comics signed that weekend and met a lot of the faces behind all the people I threw my money at and I was largely disappointed. Most had assembly line crews with them who would 1. Inspect the item, 2. Prepare the item, 3. Finalize the set up and tweak the angle to minimize the artist’s efforts. The thing would be signed, shoved to the side where a second crew would prepare and hand it back to me. No eye contact, no acknowledgement of existence. This made sense for Mr. T because he was wearing about 100 lbs of necklaces, but Jim Lee was such a d-bag that he signed over somebody else’s autograph. My dad was nice enough to accompany me back to get the thing signed by the first person, who just shook his head when he saw what Jim Lee did.

Then there was Neil Gaiman, who took my copy of Death #1 from my hands and made eye contact as he thanked me for coming and doodled an ankh before signing his name. He asked me about the t-shirt I was wearing (I don’t recall what shirt I was wearing, just that it was black, so of course he would have asked about it) and handed my comic back to me. I felt seen. It was such a small act of kindness but it saved that entire experience.

I know that things get hectic and that everybody has bad days, but a lot of these things are a choice, just like they are for me. You made the choice to be a decent, humble human being and I just want to say thank you for that. I’m about a thousand words, I guess.

I’m glad. I have no doubt that there were times at conventions and long signings where people got a brain dead zombie in my clothes signing their books or comics. But I always tried as best I could to make it real and to be the kind of signing I would like to do if I was getting something signed.

He is wearing oversized armor with pauldrons, one with sergeant's stripes painted on it, and scale mail underneath. the Piece Maker (a siege weapon crossbow) is strapped to his back. second, standing at 7 foot 4 inches is Dorfl, a reddish Golem made out of patchwork clay, with a overall gingerbread man look, and glowing red eyes. he is only wearing a breastplate, and he has his sergeant's stripes painted on his arm. He is a brown skinned human, with slicked back 80's business guy hair and a slightly strained smile. She is a white dwarf with a stocky build, blonde hair and a blond, braided beard. she has some burns on her arms, ears, and forehead, and is missing her eyebrows. she has a full lentgh leather skirt rather than pants. third, at 7 inches is Buggy Swires. he is a brown skinned Gnome, with grey hair and pointed ears. he is not wearing armor, but instead a rain cloak. next to him is his pigeon, which carries his badge and is a foot tall. I really liked the Dead Boy Detectives TV show, and I thought the way they handled Charles's death was beautiful, so I'm only a little bit sad that we won't get to see this moment in live action:

For those of you who haven't read Sandman (spoilers below):

Lucifer has quit hell, driven all the inhabitants out, and given the keys to Dream, which means there's a huge power battle about who shall rule hell, and meanwhile all the damned souls are on earth.

Which means that when Charles is killed (by dead former students, in this version), Death is so busy she shows up in gym clothes, and really doesn't have time to argue about who goes where. If Charles doesn't want to leave Edwin behind, so be it.

And something about this hyper-powerful entity working up a metaphorical sweat dealing with all these souls, plus the sheer 80s-ness of her outfit, is so funny to me. 😀

I wanted to edit an 18th century portrait to suit Magrat because I feel like on the rare occasion that she does wear a witch hat, it would be a particular style of 18th century hat*. Like the much more popular bergèr, they featured a wide brim, but instead of a small incredibly low crown, they had a slightly wider crown that formed a low cone. I thought that a 1790s portrait would work best as a base, because of the changing fashionable dress and some of the hairstyles seem to fit the descriptions given in the books (not that this is the best example, but it was good enough for my purposes). I started with Walter Robinson’s ca. 1795 portrait of Mrs. Gabriel Manigault (Maragret Izard) and added from there. Her necklace would hold a silver pendant, and while in the Roundworld this pendant would often be a cross, it’s anyone’s guess as to what Magrat’s would be. Perhaps the silver ram skull that the Fool got for her in Ankh-Morpork?

*I would love to make one of these hats because they’re cool, but I can’t find any information about them unless it appears in a print making fun of Quakers or the Welsh, and in there are definitely images where this is not the case, and they seem to have been an alternative to the much more popular bergère, and worn, like the bergère, by women of various classes.

this weekend's fleamarket treasures <3

I went to 3 markets in total, one on Saturday before work and 2 today.

orange -> saturday; blue -> sunday

I got the necklaces because the red one looks like drops of blood (vampire vibes <3) and the black one because black, also because I'm a sucker for this style of necklace. Obligatory aviator sunglasses inspired by my favourite old man Mick Mars (also because I wanted to buy something off of my coworker who had a table at one of the markets), fishbone and ankh (silver) pendants to turn into earring charms/necklaces, and red eyeshadow

Of course I couldn't leave without at least a couple CDs! I picked out the Scorpions - Virgin Killer album because the boys look so strange in all their late 70s glory and I'm so curious to hear what their earlier songs sound like lol

My favourite seller handpicked the Iron Maiden - Killers album and The Sweet - Castle Masters Collection compilation just for me <3 The Bravo Hits 15 sampler was a blatant nostalgia buy because it's 40 of the most popular songs from the year I was born! Michael Jackson - Bad was a spur of the moment buy and the Zombieland DVD was another nostalgia buy, it's been a couple years so it's high time for a rewatch <3

I already have a couple thrifted denim jackets and vests but I was missing a cool cropped vest to go with my more high-waisted 80s looks so into my bag it went, just gotta add 2 buttons in the back to cinch the waist a bit more. The overall style dress is such a good basic layering piece for my whimsical looks, it's also giving me subtle Miss Beard But Goth vibes lol

The silhouette art was the most expensive piece that day, but I had to have it because I looooove the vibe of the fancy 18th century lady and the devil cherub whispering into her ear 😈

Bought the Black Sabbath t-shirt because of the print and because I like the brand that makes these bandshirts <3

got the AC/DC tanktop because of the Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap print, and the striped button up for a certain flavour of 90s/2000s outfits (mainly inspired by Adam from the first Saw movie lol)

Mirror selfies because I actually took some fit pics. I was thinking about how self conscious I used to be about everything - if people would approve of what I wore, if I was scene/punk/emo enough, not wanting to look poor or messy. That was a lifetime ago now, and I can’t remember why I really thought any of that mattered before.

I followed a punk fashion reddit thinking I’d see some cool personalized punk styles and diy clothes ideas. Instead, I just found post after post of people asking for validation that they were punk enough. I know I used to worry about that stuff, I get it. I hope they find the freedom in their style and self expression that I have. So here’s a full breakdown of my fit, warts and all 🤡

-Mesh skulls long-sleeve shirt from hot topic clearance, purchased shortly after top surgery to celebrate my new chest!

-Clearance hot topic pants, safety pinned at the top bc the button fell off. One day I’ll replace it, you know…probably…

-Steel toed work boots I was given by my workplace three jobs ago, absolutely falling apart

-Thrifted chain earrings, and a lip ring from a mall kiosk. A cheap ankh ring + a good luck amulet from a local new age store, a clearance shield necklace from Spencer’s, a scratched love lock my beloved gave me on an old chain that turns my neck green. Both wrist cuffs were gifts.

My friend at school started The Sandman and she asked me something which I couldn't answer to.

The necklace Death uses in the show and in the comics is almost identical to the one Doctor Fate, from the DC universe, wears. I had noted the similarity before but I didn't think much about it since I know DC also published The Sandman before.

What got me intrigued was that my friend and her boyfriend suggested that maybe Death wears a necklace similar to Doctor Fate's because death is everyone's destiny, eventually. I absolutely loved their theory and I wanted to know if there is any correlation?

Camera Work and Lighting

During the camera work and lighting workshop I wanted to attempt to explore images which relate to my project while I practiced the skills being taught in the workshop.

Firstly I practiced using shadows and lighting from having the subject stand behind a sheet of plastic and trying to direct shapes which resembled someone praying in a confessional booth and the crucifixion.

Next I used the projector to project a bat and placed my ankh necklace into its wings, then I placed a ballerina ornament which was missing its legs into the bats mouth to create a more spooky, fear mongering, gothic and momento mori type of image.

I then played around with shadows and light again this time we casted an orb of light, an ethereal idea, the subjects shadow is holding this magical perhaps god given light which adds the spiritual element.

Some of these images didn’t exactly turn out how I would have liked and they weren’t as clear or professional looking as some other photos I practiced with, however, it was beneficial to attempt to create these images and I did learn in the process, next time I might use a thinner sheet of plastic for example so as the shadows read better through the screen and I might edit the images more heavily or even play with shutter speed and aperture on my DSLR rather than on my iPhone.

Ares - young male SkyWing, Adrasteia's son, protective brother to Hera. Reminds Adrasteia a lot of his father. Falls in love with Jet. Protective of his sister and wants to bring justice and end the war, but is concerned for his mother's mental health.

Frigid - male IceWing soldier in the First Circle, secretly Queen Brumal's lover. After Queen Brumal's death, he is forced to continue his role while also trying to keep his children with Brumal a secret, thinking it could cause him to be demoted in the Circles. He wants Ghiaccio to become king so he can continue to keep his secret.

Hyacinth and Snakeroot - duo LeafWing (PoisonWing) couple, Hyacinth is female and Snakeroot is male. Their love isn't exactly forbidden, they were happy that their marriage was arranged, but they flee to Pyrrhia and get caught in the war just trying to live peacefully without any SapWing and PoisonWing tension. Their children are Ash and Sycamore. Hyacinth's sister Arnica is furious with her sister for leaving and she and her husband Foxglove become major antagonists.

Ghiaccio - male IceWing, Brumal's cousin who hated the royal life and fled. Due to Frigid and Brumal's relationship being secret, Frigid wants to find Ghiaccio to take the throne so his secret is not exposed. However, Ghiaccio fled and lived in the abandoned Night Kingdom, where he finds a shiny amulet that gives him visions, and flees to Pantala to escape Pyrrhian drama, where he meets Julia and Pollen. Eventually travels back to Pyrrhia with the two to help end the war after he discovers more knowledge.

Julia - a female SilkWing living in Honeycomb Hive. Besties with Pollen, a HiveWing. Helps Ghiaccio with his Pyrrhian trauma (tm) and gets him settled into Pantalan life. Goes on a journey with Ghiaccio and Pollen back to Pyrrhia to help end the war with the shiny necklace that causes trauma (tm).

Earthquake - male MudWing soldier who just wants to be a dad to his kids, but his mate took the kids. Determined to find more about the cause of the war and to get more involved in his kids' life. Becomes best buds with Treefrog, who unbeknownst to him is actually the RainWing prince Radiance in disguise.

Radiance - male RainWing prince, is disappointed in his mother's choice to not affiliate herself with the war, escapes the Rainforest Kingdom and disguises himself as a MudWing named Treefrog to be able to fight in the war, becoming best buds with Earthquake.

I think there are a few more I am missing, shrug shrug
