Meet Julier, Cherry and Piper, our protagonists for the first little arc of my candy world project!
During a years long war against the Hard Candy Kingdom, young Prince Julier of Gummy Kingdom is caught in a conspiracy that just might unravel the reason for this conflict, and who is really pulling the strings
More in-depth lore under the cut, but I won’t subject your dashboard to a super long post
Julier Haribo: A gumdrop candy prince who feels like he doesnt help as much in the war as his siblings. Kinda bratty. Insecure During a fight with his sister, He storms off with his entourage. Hes attacked on route, his men killed and he left for dead.
Cherry, a jolly rancher (hard) candy solider who left the army due to her not agreeing with its actions. Hard headed and bold. She’s blunt and serious, though much more soft hearted then she would like. On the road she comes across an overturned carriage and several dead bodies. While she’s looting anything useful off of them, she discovers that the Prince is alive. Against her better judgement she drags him to safety and patches him up the best she can
Piper, a white chocolate farmer who lived on the outskirts of its county. She’s soft spoken and level headed. Positive under pressure and a pretty damn good shot. She’s lonely on the farm without her siblings, feeling abandoned. She’s out working the field one day when she comes across a hard candy solider carrying an injured gumdrop on her back. Not one to turn away strangers, she offers them shelter and medical help. While she treating the gumdrop, they’re suddenly attacked by an unknown party and forced to flee. She now travels with them.
(Julier also finds a magic book and it lets him do magic, i have a whole magic system that based how colourful you are (see julier being green + pink while Cherry is monocoloured) and your state of mind)
After multiple close calls with both armies, as well as mysterious other, the trio eventually come across and joins the rebellion against the war. Hopefully to stop it once and forever
#YOU WILL LOOK AT MY CHILDREN AND LOVE THEM#IVE BEEN WORKING ON THE STORY FOR TWO YEARS WITH MY FRIEND#I WANNA MAKE THIS A FULL GRAPHIC NOVEL#THATS WHY IM GOING TO ART SCHOOL IN THE FIRST PLACE#OCS#Candy Kingdom: Dulcis#all the characters grow and change#Juice is a BRATTTT at the beginning and a sweet responsible guy now

This is the kind of shitty trope that can only be worth anything but a purposeful and mindful inversion of the trope, which not everyone can pull off well, though I believe it is possible.
Another separate example of a shitty harmful trope that only truly becomes worth anything when it is inverted is the trope of "a timeskip has happened, and now to show that the character has turned into a pathetic disgusting loser, they have become FAT." -- This is my least favorite trope of all time, and it genuinely makes me lose some of my will to live.
But the inversion of that trope is like the end of the novel series my wife is writing, in which there is a timeskip and the main character is now chubby -- and this is framed as a clear sign of healing and growth for this character who has been underweight and malnourished for 3 books up til now!! -- As a fat person trying to recover from an eating disorder, this makes me feel seen and happy and loved! (I LOVE MY WIFE.)
Similarly, with the "disability reveal illiciting fear and pity" thing, it's like @cripplecharacters said: the issue is the fear and pity, especially when framed as an obvious and natural reaction from neutral or good characters.
And now before I list some ideas for inverting the trope, I wanna give the caveat that if you are not representing a disability that you have, you should first and foremost ask yourself why you want a remarkable reveal of the character's disability in the story in the first place:
-- What function does it serve? What feeling is it meant to evoke from the audience? (Fear, pity, shock, or disgust = bad answers.) Is this a matter of making disability a spectacle[bad]? Is this a matter of body horror[very bad in relation to disability]?? or is it a genuine educated attempt to represent someone from a community you aren't a part of[has the potential to be okay]???
Ideas for inversions:
The people expressing shock/pity/disgust/fear are explicitly framed as FUCKING ASSHOLES for doing this, who are eventually INVALIDATED by the larger narrative, which is committed to proving them to be in the wrong by centering the disabled character as a hero. -- The disabled character is a bigger character than any of the assholes, with their own inner life, active agency in the story, and pain response to being treated poorly. Perhaps they make the assholes look like ignorant fools in the very same scene! (Note: if you are representing a community you are not a part of, this kind of nasty prejudice is NOT OKAY TO PUT IN JUST FOR ~FLAVOR~. You need to have something to SAY about it with your storytelling beyond "isn't that just so sad that some people are mean to cripples??", or else you're a hack for ***exposing your disabled readers to a painful reflection of their own trauma for no good reason.***)
The disabled character has their own inner life and active agency in the story; and when they reveal their disability, it is met with delight and excitement - perhaps by another major character with a disability who feels pride and comradery over this in their current situation.
It's possible to have a good scene where someone reacts wrongly with pity/ignorance to a disabled character, and then the disabled character (a full character who is in the story for more than just this purpose) carefully and generously explains why this is harmful -- with the ableist character apologizing and meaningfully changing their behavior. But tbh it is more likely that this will end up as a stilted and unnecessary scene if you are not a disabled person yourself. Especially if you aren't consulting actual disabled people.
There is no grand reveal, but rather a simple acceptance and even celebration of disability. Characters have totally awesome wheelchairs; people with scars and unusual body types have loving partners and active sex lives; characters are not considered unworthy of being the story's hero just because they are disabled!
The Jaws Effect is dangerous and even deadly, but the flip side of that coin is GOOD representation for us, in which we get to be full characters that have hopes and dreams and fears outside of just being disabled setpieces for abled characters to react to!
If showing wheelchair users as inherently miserable only serves to make real wheelchair users actually miserable because abled people end up thinking that our lives are hell and therefore we need endless harmful "hLep" and dangerously dehumanizing pity that veers into eugenics......
Then the opposite of that would be to show how FULL our lives can be! How we are still entire complex humans, who don't need to be magically turned into abled people to remain a part of the story!! Our chairs are GOOD and offer FREEDOM, and showing a wheelchair user going about their life and being part of the story can go a long way towards communicating that, even without focus on the disability itself as part of the narrative!
How could I do a "classic disabled reveal" (Example: The guy reveals that he has a mechanical limb and the spectators feel pity/scared) in a better way, without using the tiring tropes and drama?
The thing is, you can't.
The tired trope and the drama, is, in fact, the 'pity' and the 'fear' spectators feel at seeing a disabled person and a sign of their disability.
That is what's tired, not the dramatic moment of the reveal. The reveal itself is whatever.
The tired trope is that disabilities and signs of them are something you should be scared of, that you should pity, that you shouldn't be seeing or have them being shown to you.
And this trope is not harmless, and it hurts real disabled people in the real world. It extends to people's feelings about real disabled people, the way they treat real disabled people. It contributes to thinking that disability is something inherently scary, bad, and required to hide. Disability is neutral, not the end of the world.
Someone having a disability is not automatically scary nor something to pity. Someone having a visible disability is not automatically scary nor something to pity. Disabled people are just people living life. Disability is a part of their life, our life.
Here is a post on the "Jaws Effect." Please read it and take it into consideration.
Hope this helps you understand.

hi. you've mentioned Donald Duck a few times in your posts, with scrooge being one step removed from pulp heroes, Donalds Paparinik (Italian superhero identity which I love, the new PK Adventures where lovely) in terms of their relation to the Diabolik line of European superheroes and Donalds general tendency to run head first down slippery slopes. so I'm wondering if you have any further thoughts on his comics and weird place in the superhero/pulp world
Oh God, do I. I mostly wanna talk about the superhero side of things but I feel like it's worth mentioning I grew up with Donald Duck comics, specifically the Carl Barks ones. The picture above wasn't taken by me but I own and recognize like 7 of the books in it, my mom always bought these that collected several of his stories and had these beautiful painting covers so we could read them together, and I still flip through them on occasion and love them very much (I really wanna buy a translated edition of Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck to read with her but those cost a liver). Donald Duck was one of my childhood hyperfixations and I got my hands on all the comics and movies and cartoons I could find with him, and I actually did read several of the Italian comics, I could go down the stationery right now and grab 5. I first stumbled on Paperinik via those, and for long I didn't think much of it, because Donald Duck moonlighting as a superhero for decades isn't the kind of thing that comes up often. I just thought Paperinik was a weird but funny idea for the longest time and always liked rereading a story where he puts on the costume to scare a rich jerk into leaving his granny's farm alone. And THEN I stumbled onto PKNA, Paperinik New Adventures, and oh my god this rules so much.
Actually one of the best superhero comics I've ever read, it's just constantly and consistently doing these wild absurd stories and swings into genre territory and quality storytelling. It's famous for opening it's first issue with aliens genociding an entire planet and I thought that was kinda overselled, and it's not frequently this dark (sometimes it actually gets darker though, and I probably stopped before it could really get there), but it is a very weird comic. It's more akin to Fantastic Four's serialized consistency than any kind of graphic novel prestige storyline but it is frequently so good at what it does, even the lamer issues are still worth reading. I like describing it as Donald Duck falling headfirst into Batman-level resources, forced to deal with Superman problems (on both the "huge sci-fi horrors" and "people being really, really irresponsible dicks" ends), while trying to stay Ditko's Spider-Man and failing. These do not feel quite like any Donald Duck comics I'd read before and while they would hold up with a different character, I do think they deserve credit for how they make it still always feel like you're reading a Donald Duck story, if a slightly different one. In fact I'd even say PKNA actually makes the concept feel more suited for Donald Duck in a way that brought the idea full circle.
To those of you that don't know, Paperinik started as a villain, or more of a revenge fantasy. By that point there was a tradition of doing a lot of parody stories with Donald that started in 1953. By the late 60s, readers were dissatisfied with Donald Duck always constantly being mistreated by the rest of the supporting cast and losing unfairly, so it was decided to have one of those parodies feature Donald Duck as uncovering the fortune and resources of "Fantomius" and becoming a masked rogue able to get back at them by achieving the impossible, in that he both steals from Scrooge and defeats Gladstone's luck by framing him for it.
He had a stint as a master thief until it was decided it made him too mean, so he morphed into a superhero trying to overcome his prior bad reputation and using his new skills and gadgets (still prone to malfunctioning) to deal with his typical rogues and new ones, and having the admiration of his nephews who don't know that Unca Donald and Paperinik are the same. PKNA, in turn, was sort of a reboot, shedding the previous history and pretty much getting rid of Donald's traditional supporting cast and having Donald stumble onto a different set of resources and means to fight crime, but keeping the idea of Donald Duck having a superhero alter-ego that nobody suspects. The scale and menace of the threats he's up against DRASTICALLY increases, and if anything that fact is crucial to what allows these to still feel like Donald Duck stories, even with Paperinik being a genuinely impressive and cool hero able to save the world. Nobody believes Donald Duck could be a cool and impressive person if he tried, and so Paperinik becomes not just a power fantasy, or a call to something better or be someone better, but it becomes a key component of Donald Duck stories: a thankless job he's expected to do that he doesn't want to do until his pride or something crucial is on the line. These are still parables about human failures and what can be learned from them.
I'd even say a big part of why they succeed is because they introduce a character who can pick up Donald's slack as a comically unpleasant ill-tempered grouch in need of a lesson protagonist in Angus Fangus, a character who's sort of J Jonah Jameson meets Harvey Bullock. Angus has it out for Paperinik and gets up to a lot of the antics you would traditionally expect Donald to be doing if this was a classic Donald Duck comic (and even has a Gladstone-esque rival of his own in another reporter), and getting to learn lessons and be humbled and even have his own set of impressive moments. The choice to give an entirely new cast around Donald greatly added to the comic's ability to experiment and do new things while still keeping the core of Donald.
I actually like a lot of these new dynamics better than the ones he traditionally has, I love The Raider and Lyla and One and oh god Xadhoom, Xadhoom is so fucking cool, such a cool design and name, this powerful roaring supernova stickbug alien person in a crusade of murderous vengeance who names herself her language's equivalent of creditor because the death of her entire planet is the DEBT SHE WILL COLLECT IN BLOOD ENERGY and she is just the most 90s anti-hero ever made except she's stuck in a Donald Duck comic getting into comedic situations and learning to laugh and feel emotions and learn from her mistakes again whether she likes it or not. These two are so good together.
Even with a superhero lair and supercomputer and gadgetry handed to him, Donald Duck is so comically outmatched against his opponents he still winds up winning through guile and will and comedic trickery. Donald desperately wishes he could go on self-serving ventures or just sit at home and enjoy tv, and not get dragged into dealing with murderous alien invasions, or cyberpunk revenge stories, or collapsing future timelines, and still having to solve those problems so there's a world to come back. The stories are frequently fun and they are prevailingly comedic and very good at it too, but they also get a lot out of taking weird turns into unexpected territory.
I haven't finished it because I wasn't able to find it in full or keep track of what's the og series and what's the reboot, still trying to sort that out, but god what a find this series is. What a great strange turn in the history of this great strange character.

WIP WIP WIP drawing a Modern Helsa AU that I haven’t thought about in a long time
I was a dumb teenager who boldly proclaimed that I’d make a modern Helsa AU novel a few years ago after assessing the shortcomings of Frozen 2, but then I got bored and never actually did it. However, I recently came across some of my old brainstorming and got inspired again, so I thought I might share some sketches that I was working on tonight.
This AU was called "Queens" (in reference to Elsa and Anna's royal status) and the basic idea is that Irene Everett (Elsa) is a graphic designer living in Queens, NY, in the late 80s-early 90s trying to be a single parent to her son, Oliver (Olaf) and that her sister Allison (Anna) and her boyfriend Joshua Borden (Kristoff) all help co-parent since Irene has to work late. Irene eventually runs into Hank Weston (Hans), working as a janitor at her job. He's trying to rebuild his life after spending time in prison for endangering Irene and Allison during a car accident and for driving drunk. Hank and Irene reconnect and form a relationship through trial and tribulation, romance and drama, and all that ensues.
If you wanna read up on what the full premise was, check out this old, silly post I made in the link here. Will I pursue it further? Who knows at this point, don’t believe a word I say. 🙃
Also BONUS because aaaaarrrmmms.... 🫠🤤

Current plans (rambles and ideas) for the DCTL redrawn project
First off, I just came up with that title on the spot and it works super well so I'll stick with that probably pffh. Follow the tag if interested in participating !! Anyways, here's my rambles.
I wanna do some more research on Chris Hastings. Fellow Bendy wiki staff have pointed out that he adapts the books rather than illustrate them, which I didn't realise had any difference beforehand. Basically means directing stuff like backgrounds, setting, etc from my knowledge. They sourced this user that seems to know a thing or two about him and his work, along with getting an early copy of the graphic novel. I'll do proper research and make a seperate post soon for this.
Moving onto the project itself, I've got some jumbled thoughts I'll try and make sense of-
I'll reread DCTL to understand the book properly, all work going foreward from there
Design work will start after this, all characters will have set, universal designs based off of canon, official (such as meatly's word), book descriptions and more, such as racecoding (I'll do justice for Thomas and Norman) and time period. I'll likely be designing them alone, but I may listen to other participant inputs and ideas to make sure they're the best they can be.
This novel will be drawn from scratch !! We won't base or reference anything off of the original graphic novel, we'll only be using the original DCTL book and its word.
Every page will act as a "map part", basically having one artist do an entire page/pages. Some may want to collaborate with others (such as one person doing the backgrounds with the other doing characters) for their pages which is more than welcome.
Newer/less skilled artists are more than welcome to offer to participate, please don't let your skill level or own perception of your art discourage you !! I'd love to give you all a chance.
I may be pinging those who said they'd be happy to participate once I make the call post. Once ready to make that post, I'll be starting a discord server for communication. This will also include a google doc or something similar so we can get full quality pages from everyone rather than compressed images from the app.
The project's novel will begin with foreword. This will include background for why it was started, clearly state it was made as a protest against the original graphic novel, Mike's view of minorities in fiction and will also state it was made because we care and love this series, and want it to do better. It will credit and link to the artist who drew the original and explain why we believe the artist was mistreated and should've had more time and pay. Stuff of that sort.
Every page will have the artist's signatures/@'s in the margins, and the novel will have a glossary of all who participated.
Things may change, we'll see, but these are the rough plans I've got so far. Would love to hear your thoughts and ideas as usual !!

Hi! I wanna make my own comic, and I wanted to ask if you have any tips/advice for pacing your comics? In other words: how do you know what's going to be on a particular page? I've been struggling to even get started with scripting, and your work is rlly impressive!
Thank you! I'll do my best to explain my approach to pacing! I'm really bad at explaining my process always though, so I apologize in advance if I fumble this.
Appropriate pacing for a comic absolutely depends on what kind of comic you're making. In the instance of making, say, a graphic novel, one typical follows the standard story pacing rules, depending on the genre and all that (see any "The Narrative Arc" graph).
For a comic book series, you've got the standard arcs to keep in mind PLUS you need to keep the reader's attention so that they'll consider buying the next issue -- And this has to happen in an endless cycle if it's a book like Spider-Man. That means that the last few pages ought to have PUNCH, y'know? So for a comic book instead of a full Narrative Arc, you're in this perpetual cycle of:
Inciting Incident -> Rising Action -> Midpoint -> Inciting Incident -> Rising Action -> Midpoint [etc]
Until what is deemed the "end of an arc" in which a Falling Action is allowed at the end of four or eight issues. Small moments of relief are sprinkled throughout these issues in the form of jokes or breaks for the character, but ultimately the line is going up until the main issue of that arc is fully resolved.
This is why, for example, the Metal Virus arc in IDW Sonic felt so exhausting to some people (personally I loved it). The tension was constantly rising with no breaks in between bigger moments. There was no "midpoint," just Inciting Incidents and Rising Actions for ~20 months. I think this is appropriate for an arc firmly set with the family-friendly horror genre it was pulling, though it wasn't to everyone's taste.
I personally write my comics to have moments of stress followed by moments of calm followed by moments of stress and so on. I sprinkle some relief in the stressful moments and some stress in the calm moments. The stress moments and calm moments can be stretched or shortened however I see fit, so long as there is a break from each one eventually. I couldn't tell you when the appropriate time to switch would be, however, because I go off of vibes when it comes to that kinda thing. "Has this stretched on too long?" y'feel?
For webcomics, pacing gets broken down into an even tighter space. Yes you're following comic pacing rules but now you've got the extra added bonus of needing to hook your reader at the end of a page in order to convince them to keep reading next week. My webcomics professor in college, Meredith Gran (Octopus Pie), taught my class that the best way to do this is either with a surprise at the end, or a joke. Something to get the reader itching to see what's next.
That's all I can think of in terms of tips for pacing, and I'm real sorry if that wasn't enough! All I can do is recommend Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud to you!

I also just want to say, that I know change is hard. I know life is hard. So much of life is just weathering storms as they roll in, and sometimes it's just too much. When things are looking down, remember to look back at where you've been. I know it's difficult, especially if you've been through so much, but sometimes you have to look back to see how far you've come. You've made it so far. You've done so many things and made such an impact on the people in your life. Don't give up being the kind, wonderful, brilliantly beautiful person you are because of tough days. One day soon things will look up. Sending hugs your way lovelies. Take care <3.

DATE WITH DEATH
hi :3 I wanted to finally publicly share somewhere a little passion project of mine!
date with death is a fictional slasher franchise invented by me! I’ve never really considered it to be an oc universe, more like movies that existed in an alternate universe, so it is meant to be as period accurate/realistic as possible. it has a tiny fandom of my friends but is always open to more members :) under the cut I’ll talk more about it and my plans. I will be talking about it like it exists so mild warning for unreality if that kind of thing bothers you
If you have any questions PLEASE ask away
date with death has three films, date with death (1995), date with death 2: summer break (1997), date with death 3: school reunion (2005).
the films revolve around a masked killer with no name, but sometimes referred to as john doe or nicknamed masky, as he wears a prom suit and a white bird/plague masquerade mask. in the films, masky stalks and picks off various popular teenagers in cliques in a twisted display of love
date with death: in the days leading up to prom in a small town, teenagers in a popular clique are getting mysteriously picked off, their bodies displayed in strange and grotesque ways. as the teens fight amongst themselves, revealing petty rivalries and secrets, can they come to their senses in time to make it to prom, or will the killer find his perfect prom date?
date with death: summer break: gracie returns to her old town to take care of her ill mother over summer break, and with the killer dead there should be no threat, right? when more murders begin, gracie tries to leave, but finds herself stranded. will she be able to face her past at the biggest party the teens of the town have to offer, or will her killer return to take her as his prom queen?
date with death: school reunion: past memories bring gracie back to her highschool for the ten year school reunion. despite living a peaceful life now, her old friends missing at the event stir up former fears, and that night she goes to dig up the killer’s grave just to make sure. to her horror, it’s empty. the killer is back, and he’s picking off all the popular, bitchy, self absorbed no-longer-teens he missed the first time around. will gracie finally escape the killer from her past, or will it be til death that they part?
some other stuff!!!
the DWD franchise also has a graphic novel based around april fools and one based around valentines day. i have various trivia about the behind the scenes of the films and also about the fandom surrounding the movies. I have details about all the characters in the first movie and the actors that play them, and some details about the songs in the film (more notably, I think we’re alone now by Tiffany plays in an iconic scene in the first film)
future plans!
I really want to write up actual full film scripts off the films and potentially novel adaptations since the full plots exist only in my brain right now! I wanna draw thumbnails of shots I have in my brain and I have a film nerd boyfriend who wants to help me with some photography and short segments of filming! I doubt I’ll ever create it fully in the way that it is in my head but it’s an ongoing dream of mine :)
I’ll elaborate more on this if asked!! I may post random stuff on this blog like it exists so uhhh yeah! feel free to join the date with death fandom!!!!!

Soooo I’ve been seeing this post go around and I do wanna just take something I wrote about in the tags and make an actual post about it to clear up an (understandable) misconception I think a lot of people have:
The upcoming Tales From Hawkins #3 centered on Robin…
(Variant covers for Stranger Things: Tales From Hawkins #3)
…is a single comic issue not a graphic novel.
This distinction matters here for two primary reasons:
Length: A standard comic issue is generally about 32 pages, as opposed to graphic novels which vary a lot in length but are much much longer. I haven’t read other issues in the Tales From Hawkins series so I’m not 100% sure the length of this issue specifically, but I do know people thinking this is going to be the length of a full graphic novel will be expecting a lot more than what there will actually be, so that’s just like, setting yourself up for disappointment.
Availability: While digital purchasing and/or pirating will of course be options, if you would like a physical copy of this story you will not find it at a regular book store any time soon, you will need to to go to a comic book store (here is a helpful tool: the comic shop locator) or if there are no comic stores near you/getting to one is not feasible for you, order from a comic store that delivers to other places (for example, Midtown comics or Things From Another World). Comic publishers used to have some single issues available at bookstores via the newsstand distribution model but that ceased existing during the 2010s. I think it’s highly likely that once the Tales From Hawkins series is over there will be a collected edition (much like the other Stranger Things comics have gotten) and THAT would be available at regular bookstores, but that would not be for a while.
And just for the context of how I know for a fact that this is a single issue and not a graphic novel:
Every month comic publishers put out solicitations (also known as ‘solicits’) which list what books are available for preorder. Usually solicits are about 3 months ahead of release, so in the case of Tales From Hawkins #3, it was part of Dark Horse’s August 2023 solicits which were released in May.
Anything that is a hardcover, trade paperback, graphic novel, etc is labelled as such—with the remaining listed books being single issues. Plus this specific site reporting these solicits has everything sorted by category so super clearly labelling what’s what, and if you scroll through the page you’ll see that Tales From Hawkins falls under the single issue category!
And also just like… graphic novels typically don’t get variant covers like this, that’s a comic issue thing. Graphic novels also typically aren’t given numbers like #3 of 4’, they’re given numbers like ‘Volume 3’ if part of a multi-book series. And the list price is $3.99 USD which while standard for a single issue is like unheard of for a new graphic novel.
#ALSO QUICK ADD ON: midtown doesn't have it available right now because we're past the pre-order date but before the actual release date#so once it actually releases the backstock will likely be available to order from 👍 TFAW seems to still allow preorders tho so i added it#included the covers to encourage ppl to actually read this LMAO#stranger things#robin buckley#stranger things comics#stranger things tales from hawkins#tales from hawkins#also like absolutely no hate to op of that post if ur not highly aware of comic book stuff its an easy misconception to have

October was an interesting month my friends, but now the good stuff is coming, Halloween, Guy Fawkes, Christmas, New Year, My birthday and then Galentines, like that's a whole stream of good things (well you don't have to celebrate my birthday, that would be weird but it's there) and also I hope that we will see the first women president, no matter how disheartening it is to see how close the race is, if you are in a swing state please vote, if you're not please vote, your democratic voice is essential.
How to vote guide here.
These are my favourite books of this month, there's a manga in here, there's a graphic novel, there's a novella and there's a novel sort of, it's a novel but short stories that tie together, but I loved it anyway and I hope you can find something here that you will enjoy here too, I hope you had an amazing October and a November full of hope. please, give me some hope.
The Girl From The Other Side by Nagabe (vol. 9) - I've now completed this series of twelve books, and though the end does for me leave so much unanswered about what goes on, I really did enjoy some of the volumes that made up this series. The story of Shiva and Teacher and insiders and outsiders, this series makes you emotionally invest in these characters, which are brought to life by beautiful artwork throughout the whole series, I would recommend it highly.
Mammoths At The Gates by Nghi Vo - part of the Singing Hills Series, Mammoths At The Gates can be read alone, but I highly recommend this whole series. Following Cleric Chi as they return back to their monastery after a long journey, finding mammoths at the gates owned by the daughters of the head monk who, well I don't wanna say too much. The characters are so richly written in a world built so well considering how few pages these books are. I loved this book and can't wait to read more from Nghi Vo.
What You Are Looking For Is In The Library by Michiko Aoyama - I don't know still how I feel about how sometimes the body of the librarian behind the desk is described sometimes, so heads up for fatphobia but I would still say this book is excellent. Beautiful stories that bring growth to people in a way that doesn't include ghosts but a very smart librarian, I loved this book because the people were so tenderly written, it felt like a love letter for hope and humanity. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a little comfort read.
The Girl From The Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag - A beautiful graphic novel about a girl who meets a selkie, this graphic novel is a beautiful story that's told through stunning art but also a very real tale of growing up and figuring out the person you are. I really enjoyed this story and I'm so glad more stories like this are being told. All young people should be able to find books that they can see themselves in and I just found this one delightful.
these were my favourite books! What were yours? I'd love to know.
Vee xo.

fumbled and stumbled my way through watching the third season of heartstopper. i did a lot of pausing and muting (i had captions on, as of halfway through the first episode anyway, so i didn't miss anything conversation-wise, it's just hard sometimes to listen to certain things and reading it can be easier) (note this only applies to short things like voicemails or tv show / movie captions) i don't think i really skipped over any bits, if i did they were so minimal and rare i don't remember lol i wanted to see it all, i just can't handle a lot of the things that i knew were going to be in the season so i had to try and get through it in whatever ways would make it easier
part of me feels like that means i didn't really watch it, or like.. idk.. my brain is just trying to make me feel like i need to rewatch it "properly" but i don't think i can handle it without the pausing and muting and moment or two of skipping. i really don't think that i can. and that should be okay right?? to adapt the way i watch something so i can deal with it??
it was really good, to nobody's surprise, just like the previous two seasons. it was accurate, the acting was phenomenal, the music fit, it was just great all around.
i just.. can't get through it like a normal person. not when so much of it is so personal and so close. even the parts i did listen to were really hard to get through and i cried.
and it's not like using captions and not listening doesn't count as watching. it's okay for people who can't hear so why should it be any different for me to do it?? i say - trying to get my brain to shut the actual fuck up
ugggghghdfskjhlsdeljkhfgs
it's good. great! and i'm glad i watched it. really glad.
but idk how much of it i'm going to be able to watch a second time like.. ever. i'm sure i'll watch some reaction channels, the ones who do like.. the whole reaction but only post some of it y'know?? and then you have to join their patreon to watch the full thing?? those are a bit easier to get through. and i really do wanna see other people's reactions to some of the stuff. gays watching gays reacting to gays is like.. it's always a good time.
watch the new season if you haven't. fuck it - watch the show if you haven't. it's a fuckin masterpiece. but also please read the graphic novels. before or after you watch the show. either way. the show sticks like glue to the source material (part of what made me so anxious to watch this season. knowing what was coming) and the graphic novels are AMAZING. and the art style is cute as fuck.
and then after you do that check out the novellas: this winter and nick & charlie. oh and solitaire-
listen. read the whole universe alice oseman has blessed us with, watch the show, and then come and be emotionally compromised with me about it
it's so worth it

my friend and i were talking about possible adaptations of ABM into other types of media (like a TV show, an animated series, etc). have you considered if you’d like to do so given the opportunity? we think it would make a great graphic novel
ABM is sorta unadaptable in that you'd have to get a bit creative given the book is so internal and non-visual (even brainstorming for audiobook has been sorta bizarre because we have to find a way to differentiate thoughts and dialogue) but I think that'd make any adaption really fun!
If it was live-action, I think I'd want it to look like a campy, queer 1970s art film aha. In my head, ABM actually has the color palette and weird visuals of Fellini Satyricon (a movie I can't recommend unless you can put up with a lot of discomfort but very influential to me). I also have Funeral Parade of Roses and 1923 Salomé in my brain. (All this to say that my ideal adaption is one where the angels are wearing too much makeup, are over-dressed, and are over-acted.) I would also love a full trans and/or genderqueer cast, but I know that's impossible. I figure Hollywood wouldn't want to come near ABM, anyway, so a boy can dream
I've actually heard a couple people say a graphic novel would be great!! Honestly, anything animated would be a lot of fun, especially because you'd have the freedom to get a little wackier with visuals. I'm a big fan of the dreamy art styles of (the very, very triggering film) Belladona of Sadness or The Greatest Living Show. But hey if they wanna give me just a generic yaoi art style, sure why not. Michael big hands. (Stop motion like, say, Coraline, would be incredible too, I think)
My funniest dream adaption is a comedic musical. Maybe even a jukebox musical. Something just absolutely atrocious.
But I don't see any adaption beyond audio ever happening since ABM is ABM, but it's fun to imagine :] I think the weirdness of the book would make each media it's performed through tell the story in its own unique way.
#ABM drag show performance adaption!!!!#ABM ballet#i love old queer media yeah how could you tell#i purposefully contradict myself with visuals sometimes (“emerald rainbow”) so id LOVE to see how that would be interpreted#anyway yeah itll never happen#but i love to Dream#mine#ask#angels before man

woah!!!!! if ur still doign the shippy thing... :33
okay erm looks wise im around 5'9-5'11 , I have shoulder length hair that used to be dyed pink (now had faded to some kind of peach color..).. erm my clothing style can be unpredictable, I fluctuate between like coquette or whatever and like full emo scene glam im pretty unpredictable. like I said... not very strong and might be slightly overweight
personality wise, im usually veeerry quiet. like not notice me when im there quiet. over time when I get to know you im loud, and obnoxious, and very annoying.. im very protective and loyal to my friends or of people im close with, I will beat someones ass if a friend told me to. I get overstimulated way to easy but I can get very understimulated quick as well.. suuuper clumsy don't let me around glass.. very neurodivergent as well. my music taste is all over the place, I listen to pretty much anything if I like it..
interests wise, im very into history and geography and things like that.. im really into lost media, especially lostwave music.. I love reading comic books/graphic novels and dramas.. very into "the arts" like music and any kind of art. I also reeally love old cartoons, especially from the late 90s to early 00s
thats most of what I wanna say .. :3 I hope its enough.
You didn’t specify which fandom you wanted to be shipped in so I’ll just give you a random character I think you’d would match
Your Fandom Ship: Ponyboy Curtis
Explanation: I think at first he would be kind of intimidated by you because you’re so much taller than him and you look really cool. He thinks you’re tough looking as hell he’d probably be a bit scared to come up to you at first and would probably need a peptalk from the rest of the gang before he even had enough guts to come up to you and say hi. I think you would love your dyed hair, and I think he would be obsessed with the fact that you consistently change aesthetics (hey thats like me!) and part of what motivates him to get up in the morning is wondering what you’re gonna wear that day and he even makes some bets with Johnny. He would be extremely respecting of any boundaries you have especially regarding your neurodivergence and very quickly to pull you out of any loud spaces if that was something that triggered you or very quickly to say hey they don’t like that texture. as for personality I think that he would love the fact that you’re more quiet as Johnny is his best friend and Johnny is extremely quiet so I think he’s used to being around people like that although I think he would love it when you finally break out of that stage of being quiet and finally are loud obnoxious around him. I think he would really appreciate that. You trust him enough to be that way around him. He loves your protectiveness and fierce loyalty to your friends and that’s a quality that he himself has and I think it’s some thing that he just really values in a person. as for your hobbies, I believe that pony boy is deep down in arts kid, as he is canon Lee, an artist in the sense that he both draws and wrights and thinks more creatively and thoughtfully than a lot of the other greasers. I also think that he would be super into history and I think you guys would have a blast in that class just going crazy with hypothetical scenarios and comparing and contrasting certain events. I Ship you guys a lot!!!!!
