A post-mortem of "Good Morning, Rose"
A few weeks ago, I posted my addition to the comic anthology GLIMM*R, a short comic called "Good Morning, Rose".
The reaction to it has been so uplifting and exciting. It really seemed to struck a cord with people, which, really, the best thing for me to hear as a creator. I absolutely love writing and making short comics, you can do much with so little, explore such interesting stories. The feedback I've gotten has been very heartwarming! It makes me want to explore short stories even more!
But, first, I want to talk about some of my feelings and about the process of making "Good Morning, Rose". This got a bit long, so you'll have to indulge me a bit. You should also read the comic first before reading this. Don't worry, it's only 8 pages.
Now the preamble is out of the way, lets go back to the beginning.
Tumblr media
The idea of "Good Morning, Rose" was a nugget in my brain for a long time! Originally it was actually from the Dreamwalker's point of view, where she was a faceless entity who had a long term relationship with Rose and was trying to figure out how to explain that their relationships only were in Rose's dreams. It was a story about seeing, accepting, and loving each other truly and fully, and the trials and tribulations of getting there. Also a cute girl with an ancient eldrich being is always fun to explore.
A lot of it was too convoluted, emotionally and storywise. It also required to get into what the Dreamwalker actually was, which I ended up really not liking. So, ultimately, the idea didn't work, and I put it down. I ended up going to do my short comic Twigs instead.
When I was invited into the wlw anthology GLIMM*R and was told that the theme was "dreams", I decided to take another stab at the concept. This time, I inverted the pov, it's now Rose's story. And instead of a long term relationship, it was about the powerful first feeling of a perfect (maybe even too perfect?) first date.
One of the hardest thing to write in romance is getting readers to care about the relationship in the first place. To have the readers believe in the character's feeling, to be invested in their romance. This is even harder to do when you only have 8 pages to do it. Focusing it around a first date helped a lot in that case. There I'm not trying to sell that these two character will love each other forever and forever, just the fluttering first butterflies of realizing you're developing feeling for someone. It's why I leave it so open-ended about whether the two of them meet again at the end of the comic, or even if it was real in the first place. It's just not the point of the story.
That's something important about writing short stories, I find. You really have to hone in on an idea, on a thought. Take a simple idea and try to find all of the interesting layers. It's too easy to try to stuff a short story with too many ideas that ultimately go unfulfilled. In fact, the first draft of the comic, at the time called "Dream Date", there was a big problem with this and the pacing.
Here, take a look at the first stab at the roughs:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(BTW, there is something so fun about roughs for me lol. The art is so kinetic and loose, all about just getting the story across)/
As you can see, a lot of the ideas and imagery made to the final version of the comic. But both the initial readers and I agreed that the beginning and end were good, but the middle was messy and slowed things down. You can also see that I got stuck in the same problem I did when I first conceived of the story, it's bogged down trying to understand the Dreamwalker in a way that actually hurts the story. You simply dont have any room for bad pacing a short comic like this. I need to focus more on the character's and their emotions and exploring their actual relationship rather than blandly trying to explain the situation. A friend also suggested that I should hone in on the fluid dream-like aspects of the first couple of pages, especially since it's so fun to explore in the medium of comics. So I got to work gutting it out and trying again with the new, much stronger imo, direction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also there were some issues with the page format that needed changes for printing, thus the final spread had to be split up. Which is a shame, but oh well, it still works. I also honed in a lot more on Rose and her insecurities. I ended up putting a lot of myself into Rose. I'm glad readers seems to able to relate to her.
After figuring out the the story and the pacing, I went and, well, made the comic. Once you've done as many comic pages I have at this point, once you figure out a process, the actual drawing is fairly straightforward. Eventually, after thinking, and drawing, and toiling, and revising, and thinking hard about my life choices, I come out of the other end of the tunnel with a comic. One that I ended up really liking. One that other people ended up liking, which is always crazy to me.
I got a lot of interesting reactions to the comic. One demographic thinking it was sweet, wanting more of it (always a flattering thought), and enjoying the romance. Other remarking on the bittersweetness of it all, finding your soulmate in a dream, maybe never to see them again if they were even real in the first place. There were a lot of people remarking how they had a similar dream, one where they met someone they seemed totally and completely convinced that they were real and told the dreamer so, until the dreamer woke up. There was one person who asked if I had met the dreamwalker myself. Alas, my dreams are not this romantic and straightforward.
But all of us can hold hands, nod at each other, united by one universally true statement: big eldritch lady hot.
There's a lot of little bits I can talk about, like how Rose's dress is actively modeled after selkie dresses because I think they're cute, or some other trials and tribulations. But I think I've finished all I have had to say. I hope you enjoyed this and will stick around for my future projects! I definitely want to explore more short stories in the next year, especially as I am illustrating big graphic novels for my day job and don't have the time or energy for huge projects.
Till then, thank you so much! Happy holidays and have a good new year!

(Nowā€¦ I wonder what I should talk to Ring about.)
(... Huh?)Ā
While I was trying to think of a conversation starter, I realised that Ring was already way ahead of me.Ā
Kate: Ring! Wait up!Ā
Tumblr media
Ring: !? Why are you so far behindā€¦?Ā
I hurriedly chased after him and he rushed back toward me.
We met halfway and started walking side by side again.
Kate: Perhaps my strides arenā€™t as long as yours. Iā€™ll try to keep up.Ā
Ring: No, I shouldā€™ve slowed down to match your pace. ā€¦ My bad.Ā
Ring: A-anyway, you can hold onto my arm.
Kate: Thank you.Ā
Tumblr media
Ring: Actuallyā€¦ I wanted to have you hold my arm back at the meeting point.Ā
Kate: Was that during your sudden warm-up session just now?
Ring: Yeah. ā€¦ I should've let you hold my arm earlier if I knew you were going to be left behind.
Ring: Iā€™m not good at acting like a lover at all. Even if it's Dariā€™s ordersā€¦
Kate: Neither of us are acting the part right now, so donā€™t let it bother you.Ā
Kate: Is there anything else you wanted to say but couldn't?
Ring: There is. Itā€™s aboutā€¦ your outfit.Ā
Ring: ā€œI love your outfit today. It suits the little robin very wellā€.
Tumblr media
Ring: ā€œWhere did you get that bracelet? I want to get a matching oneā€.Ā
Kate: Huhā€¦?Ā
Ring: ā€œThe design around the collar is fun. It really looks like your kind of thing. Alsoā€”ā€...Ā
Kate: Umā€¦ are those your own words?Ā
I couldn't help but interrupt when Ring, who had been acting awkward the whole time, suddenly started complimenting me so smoothly that it felt unnatural.
Tumblr media
Ring: ā€¦ Y-youā€™re sharp. As expected from a member of Crownā€¦ youā€™re dangerous.Ā
(Itā€™s not that Iā€™m sharp, itā€™s that Ringā€™s behaviour is so obviously unnaturalā€¦)
Ring: Actuallyā€¦ I had Nica teach me some words to compliment you, so that I can do a better job at pretending to be your lover.
Kate: So thatā€™s what happenedā€¦! Iā€™m happy you prepared yourself in advance, butā€¦
Ring: ā€œButā€?Ā
Kate: Iā€™d much rather hear you use your own words, Ring.
Kate: Do you usually compliment your lover using words someone else said?
Ring: N-no, I don'tā€¦ I-I think.Ā
Ring: A-anyway, give me a moment while I think of the words to compliment you.Ā
Kate: ā€¦ You don't have to force yourself to compliment me if nothing comes to mine, okay?
Ring: No, I really do think your outfit looks nice, it's justā€¦ ummā€¦Ā
He took my comment about wanting to hear him use his own words seriously and struggled to respond.Ā
I couldn't help but find it endearing that he was trying so hardā€¦
(You can do itā€¦!)Ā
I silently cheered him on in my heart.
Ring: Your outfit today looksā€¦ frilly and softā€¦ I-I think itā€™s c-cute.
Ring: It reminds me of a purple Hardenbergia flowerā€¦ the subdued color is comforting to look at.Ā
The words he finally managed to string together sounded hesitant and awkward, but they struck me deeper than any borrowed praises could ever.
Kate: I never would've thought of comparing the colour of my clothes to Hardenbergia flowers! It makes me so happy to hear that.
Ring: ā€¦! I-I seeā€¦ that's good to know.
Kate: You must know a lot about flowers, donā€™t you?
Tumblr media
Ring: Y-yeahā€¦ I probably know more about flowers than most other things.Ā
Kate: There are some flower beds on the way to The Scala.
Kate: If you don't mind, could you tell me what flowers they are?
Ring: ā€¦ If I can identify them.Ā
ā€¦
And so, on our way to The Scala, Ring taught me about the flowers blooming along the roadā€¦Ā
Thanks to that, his nervousness seemed to have eased significantly by the time we reached Piccadilly.Ā
Ring: ā€¦ Itā€™s about time for the play to start. We made it just in time.
Kate: Youā€™re right! The Scala is right up ahead. Letā€™s go.Ā
(... Heā€™s still a little awkward, but I feel that heā€™s conversing more naturally now as compared to this morning.)
Even Ring was wary of me and said some disturbing things earlier onā€¦Ā
He was an honest, upright person who was willing to listen to what I had to say.Ā
That honestly was likely the reason why I could freely interact with him without feeling on edge myself.Ā
(Iā€™m looking forward to watching the play. I wonder what kind of reactions Ring will have.)
(... Huh?)
Ring: ā€¦ Why did you suddenly stop? Is something wrong?
Kate: P-pardon me. Thereā€™s something I want to verifyā€¦ you come too, Ring!Ā
I grabbed Ringā€™s arm and led him toward an alley in the opposite direction of The Scala.Ā
ā€¦
Ring: ā€¦ What business do you have in an alley like this?
Kate: Thereā€™s been a rise in child abduction cases in the area lately, and I thought I saw someone resembling the suspect on the runā€¦Ā
Kate: Ahā€¦ itā€™s him!Ā
I lowered my voice and pointed at a man lurking in the shadows of the alley.Ā
Kate: Thereā€™s a chance I got the wrong person, so Iā€™m going to act casual and try to get information out of himā€”Ā
While I was explaining the situation to Ring, a young girl wandered into the alley, perhaps by accident.
At that moment, the man made a move.Ā
(Ahā€¦!)Ā
He crept up behind the girl and covered her mouth with a piece of cloth he had in his hand. It seemed to have been laced with some sort of drug.Ā
The girl fell unconscious, and the man skillfully stuffed her into a bag before attempting to flee the scene.
Kate: Ring, letā€™s go after him!Ā
Tumblr media
Ring: ā€¦ No, we need to report this to Dari and have him make a decision first.Ā
Kate: Whatā€¦? B-but there's a kidnapping happening right in front of our faces! We must act now!Ā
Ring: I was ordered to only ensure you return to the castle safely today. Any actions taken beyond that are prohibited.
Ring: Getting involved in strange situations would be going against Dariā€™s orders.
Ring: I understand that you want to help, but we should only act after reporting to Dari.Ā
(How can he say such things when a serious crime is being committed right under our nosesā€¦?)
Just a couple of minutes ago, I concluded that Ring was an honest and upright person that would never tell a lie.
But it was precisely because of that, I instantly knew that his words right now werenā€™t lies.Ā
In other wordsā€¦ Ring had no intention of stopping the crime from happening at all.Ā
Ring Schwartz, the person I thought I was starting to understand, became a complete stranger to me once more.
Kate: ā€¦ F-fine. Then Iā€™ll go after that criminal MYSELF!
Ring: H-heyā€¦!Ā

šŸŽ„ā¤ļøMouthwashing Crew on ChristmasšŸ’ššŸŽ
Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday ā™” Here's my present to you all: more headcanons!!
Tumblr media
Features: Curly x Reader, Anya x Reader, Daisuke x Reader, Jimmy x Reader
rb's appreciated! šŸ’šā¤ļø
Curlyā˜ƒļø
I think Curly would love surprising you..!
He's up before you, already has the coffee (or hot chocolate or tea) ready for you when you wake up.Ā
When you finally get out of bed, there's extra presents under the tree, and the tree is even more festive and beautiful than how you left it!!
(Is Curly Santa..??)
He's not materialistic in the slightest, but a good gift means a lot to Curly if it shows you put a lot of thought into it..! It makes him feel special that you are thinking about him ^u^
He's a good gift giver, but bad at wrapping them XD He's trying his best ok !!!
After opening presents, you guys cuddle and watch your favorite goofy christmas movie while cuddled up in your new sweaters/socks/blankets :)
His favorite part of Christmas is Christmas dinner tho, and you guys whip up a big feast and invite all your friends and family !!!Ā
Heā€™s the classic ā€œmy boyfriend only cooks meatā€ stereotype, like he cant cook but he will fuck up a christmas ham or a thanksgiving turkey or a barbecue.. let him cook fr
Bonus: Curly is definitely the Santa at the office Christmas party..!! Maybe you get to sit on Santa's lap ;DĀ
Anyaā„ļø
Panicking because she's bad at getting gifts..!!Ā
She gets to the store and.. oh no there's too many choices
ā€œI'm not sure what candy Y/N likes... I'll just get one of each.. oh dear..ā€
She would try making handmade gifts like sewing or knitting or crochet but she doesn't get them done til the last minute...
She dang near cries when you see the itchy, raggedy sweater she made you and you beam at her ā€œI love it!!!ā€ and you do! because she made it ā™”
I feel like she likes peppermints and candy canes... just her vibe
You two make a gingerbread house together !!
Yes it falls apart a little, but it doesn't matter because you both had so much fun making it :) (and decorating it with all that candy she bought !!)
Bonus: She is a based eggnog drinker. And maybe she does spike her and Daisuke's eggnog at the office Christmas party ;D
DaisukešŸŽ
Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Winner 3 years in a row
(I like the popular headcannon that Daisuke likes thrifting, so) He loves going to the thrift to find ugly christmas sweaters (so you can match) and even finding cool antiques/retro items to give as gifts!
Always gives at least one prank gift, but otherwise he is pretty thoughtful!Ā
He doesn't get you a present unless it really reminds him of you! I feel like he gifts thrifted vinyls and jewelry, secondhand designer, like his gifts are honestly peak and they're always perfect for you
He's in charge of the Christmas party!! and he's committed to packing as many christmas themed activities into it as possible
Dedicated Christmas Movie Showing, gotta watch all the classics!
Hot chocolate bar, christmas cookie buffet, pin the nose on the reindeer, ALL OF ITĀ
Strategically ties mistletoe to ensure highest occurrence of Kissing You ;3 ā€œUh, oh, Y/N! Looks like we're caught under the mistletoe.. again! How unlucky.. guess we'll have to.. you knowww..ā€ >:3c
Bonus: He would get tipsy at the office christmas party and would try to hug you or kiss you the whole time, and youā€™re like ā€œplz ur embarrassing meā€
JimmyšŸŽ„
Jimmy is actually really good at getting gifts. Like, really good. Like, you mentioned this thing in passing 6 months ago, and he either remembered it or bought it for you and hid it for 6 months. He knows exactly what to get you!
He's not really a huge fan of the holidays
That being said: He enforces Mistletoe rules like it's his job
Everyone thinks he's a grinch, so he doesn't usually get the best presents from others. It doesn't help that he never makes a christmas list or tell anyone what he wantsĀ
(mostly because he doesn't want to be disappointed when he asks for something and doesn't get it, or he's afraid to ask for something ā€œdorkyā€ that he actually really wants)
When you ask him what he wants for christmas, he just kind of shrugs and says he'll like whatever you get him
So it's extra special when you return the favor and get him a gift just as thoughtful as he gave you :) You get him the video game or album or band tee (idk what men like) that he offhandedly mentioned weeks ago :) He can't hold in his surprise that you remembered!
ā€œWoah, babe! I can't believe you remembered.. This is perfect, thank you babyā€ And then he wraps you into a tight hug!
Bonus: Yea, Jimmy had to fill in as Santa one year when Curly was busy/sick....... He made a kid cry.
Hope you enjoyed! Let me know in the replies what you think, send an ask if you have a request, and rb if u liked! Thanks for reading!šŸ’šā¤ļø
Merry Christmas!! ā˜ƒļøšŸ’ššŸŽ„ā¤ļøā„ļøā¤ļøšŸŽ„šŸ’ššŸŽā˜ƒļøā„ļøā¤ļøā„ļøā¤ļøšŸŽ„šŸ’š

it's the thought that counts
various SakaDays dudes x gn!Reader SFW, clothing implied but never assumed Yumi (seikoo_11) sent me a very sweet message and idea! Gaku and Nagumo were all her, but I wanted to add all the other dudes on my mind because they all deserve love~! Banner img from some SAO game art thing. šŸŽ„šŸŽ Happy SakaHoliDays to all~! āœØšŸŽ‰
Tumblr media
The holidays were a time for surprises, and you had cooked up the ultimate one for your SakaDays dude.
Decked out in ribbons, you struck a playful / seductive pose and announced, "Merry Christmas! I'm your gift!"
The twist? Hidden somewhere beneath the intricate bows and wrappings was an actual present, tailored just for them. The look on their face was priceless as they realized they'd have to unwrap their "gift" piece by piece to uncover the thotful treasure you'd prepared.
What better way to celebrate than with a little fun and a lot of love?
āœØ Ż Żā‹†.ą³ƒšŸŽ„ā‚Š āŠ¹šŸŽšŸŽ€ .Ā°.āœØ
Tumblr media
Gaku: A game he'd been interested in playing (how did you even notice? he gave no tells.). He unwraps you with a mix of laziness and faux indifference. He teasingly asks if the gift came with any DLC and when you say "Yes" in that particular tone, things heat up.
Nagumo: A box of Pocky tucked just out of reach ("Hurry up~" you say, "it's gonna melt!"). Every ribbon undone feels like a playful battle, and by the end, the real gift was the fun of "unwrapping" you - plus, the promise of enjoying the real treat later.
Uzuki: An art instruction book. His cheeks flush as he delicately undoes each bow, mumbling how you're more beautiful than any masterpiece he's seen and could ever dream of illustrating. (You end up redder than he is.)
Shin: A manga volume he's missing. He hesitates, blushing furiously as he fumbles with the ribbons, only to stammer out a heartfelt thank-you after. You can't wait to spoil him some more later, so you decide against spoiling the extra surprises (let's just say it involves checking more things off his list - Shin knows cuz he can read your mind and your smug face).
Shishiba: A luxurious silk tie and tie clip to add to his collection (tell me he doesn't have one of those walk-in closets with lux items encased in glass that he rotates through). He takes his time unwrapping, quietly amused by your boldness, before thanking you with a soft smirk and puts the tie around you to see how you look (with just that on - nothing else).
Hyo: Metal/brass polish. He roars with laughter at the practicality and promises to "shine up" just for you. You tell him he's already dazzling and he glows from your compliment (+ the offer to spoon him afterwards).
Heisuke (+ Piisuke): Bird & boy-friendly snacks. His excitement is infectious, as he grins ear to ear, quickly tearing through the ribbons (somehow tangling you up further before Piisuke helps out) and hugs you like you're the best gift ever.
Natsuki: Spare lithium battery packs for his invisibility suit. He unwraps you with methodical precision, smirking as he asks if this counts as "charging up for later".
Mafuyu: A UV light wand. He's irked at first, carefully untying the ribbons, but the corners of his eyes crinkle and mask shifts slightly when he sees the thoughtful gift. Why's he using it on you--?!
Amane: A personalized activity booklet. His quiet curiosity grows as he unwraps you, and his soft smile is worth every ribbon as he eagerly flips through the pages, memorizing them all instantly. He wants to start ASAP but you remind him that things are closed for the holidays and he blushes ("no no it's okay" god he's adorable).
Kashima: A handwritten IOU on reindeer stationary for a karaoke session. He chortles when he reads it, pulling you close and saying, "I expect a duet." (This would be the perfect time to put the light up Rudolph nose on him.)
Kaji: Hi-fi earplugs and a new, festive trapper hat. He laughs softly, mumbling too quietly about how much he appreciates you and the gift. He doesn't think he could pull it off but you convince him that he'll be the talk of the town and deserves to feel special.
Apart: Instead of wrapping yourself, you take the ribbons and gently wind them around the two of you, pulling him close with a smile. "This way," you say softly, "we won't be apart this Christmas." He melts, flushes, and tightens the ribbons around your shared embrace to nuzzle against you and hide his face (can't even see anything under his messy bangs anyway).
Haruma: He holds onto one end of the ribbon and tells you to spin and unravel yourself. Not in a dominant way (kinda), but in a personal trainer way (sobbing the winter holidays is when we're allowed to potato!). No gift on you, except a signed affidavit witnessed by Uzuki (& Kashima in case it wasn't the right Uzuki) saying that you worked out earlier and deserve something sweet. (Protein-baked goodies aren't half bad tbh, but Haruma would treat you to whatever you love, even the bad macro stuff - you'll burn it off later anywho ;)
Sakamoto (platonic): You've ribbon-wrapped Sakamoto for Aoi, tying a big bow around his belly, slapping it for good measure, with a cheeky grin. "Merry Christmas to the family man!" you declare, shooing him away. You'll watch over the store during the holidays so he can spend time with Aoi and Hana-chan.

"okay so tell me about yourself"
"it kinda sounds like a job interview" you laugh. "you are right" he shrugs as he eats one of the fruits you cut and put in a bowl before sitting down on the couch.
you and chenle have been going on dates for a couple of months now. but almost every time, you guys ended up doing other things instead of actually getting to know each other. it's not as if you two were avoiding conversations, it just happened to be like that.
"but I really mean it, tell me anything... or everything, in fact" he nods encouraging you to talk.
when he said that, your eyes lit up. your face full of enthusiasm. you didn't want to show that you were that excited to have this kind of conversations, but you really were. and he knew it as soon as your face changed, so there was no point in hiding it anymore.
"it might sound silly, but I really love this part of 'getting to know each other'. it's just so fun to listen about whatever the other person likes and the little details" you say happily.
you didn't notice of course, but while you talked, he was looking at you with so much adoration in his eyes. chenle knew he was in love with you, but didn't want to say anything until he had at least a minimal hint about it being reciprocated. he knew you too. not the oddly specific things, but the exact amount to already fall in love.
how many times had he thought about what would you say if he confessed so early? he imagined you saying "you don't even know my favorite color, chenle" so that's why he was determined to learn every detail about you today.
"i love it too, it's a shame we didn't have the time to do it before" he shakes his head. "now, tell me" you giggle at his eagerness.
you look at him one more time, to be sure he actually wanted to. he nods and you finally start.
"i love the color red and purple. i love cats. also, i love listening to music. it might sound weird, but i love studying because it's the perfect excuse to listen to my favorite songs without being interrupted. i like to draw, but i'm not really good at it. i love the 'oversized pants and tiny tops' combination. i love the stars and planets- actually, did you know i wanted to be an astronaut?" he chuckled when you interrupted yourself. "...but I decided to switch paths because i want to have a family one day, and i couldn't be there for my kids and husband if i'm in space, right?"
you looked like you had a million other things to say, but you wanted to listen about his own stuff too. "it's your turn now" you say this time, a hint of shyness showing in your face because of how much you managed to say in two minutes.
he, again, noticed it. "it's alright, i really enjoy listening to you" at this point you were all red because of his confession.
chenle could listen to you for hours non stop. even though he was the type to talk... the type to be listened to.
ā€œmaybe today iā€™ll finally tell her" he thought.

do you have lawlight fic recs
*cracks knuckles*
(Not) According to Plan by FlamesRise: this fic was Fundamental to me figuring out what my ideal light (smut) characterization is. fun lawlight lawyers au that is also mostly kinda just about light manipulating himself into an uncomfortable sexual scenario yayšŸ‘(this really sets the stage for what the rest of these recs are gonna look like so prepare yourself lmfao. aka these are gonna be like, 90% questionable smut and/or dead dove, i just don't read much else... šŸ«  oops)
blood in the walls of the yagami house (series) by qu_ilinn: gotta put the lawlight brocon on there since this is basically what got me into the DN fandom. grins. one of the best Terrible Horrible L depictions ever, i love this series sm lolol <33
rewards for fools by autumnstar88: cough. and so we notice a trend. this is once again light putting himself in a horny situation he's uncomfortable with and then freaking out as he likes it too much LOL, this time set immediately after he gets his memories back during yotsuba. light in a skirt, what else is there to say.
caligula would have blushed by findingsaturn: medical kink going wilddddd this blew my fucking mind the first time i read it. an absolutely delectable ratio of body horror to weird sex stuff, chefs kiss. i also rec corrosive wash and self-surgery, by the same author.
literally anything from the alignmentverse by praise_lilith and tsukinousagi: this is easily one of my favorite lawlight series, every single fic in this collection is absolutely fucking golden. 10/10 some of the funniest light and L characterization ever.
A complex fool and a simplex fool. by gomikyun: also some hilarious lawlight characterization, this time in the canonverse. i don't usually go for bottom L but this is The Exception. shout out to that one time i took like three hours searching for this just to find this stellar quote:
Why, why didn't I do this before? L has to hold himself back from letting out a whiny groan. He should have just pushed Light down and fucked himself ontop of him instead of playing tennis on that stupid fucking court. Would have been a great icebreaker. And made headlines, probably. ā€˜Hideki Ryuga and Light Yagami, top scorers on the To-Oh entrance exams have a friendly game ofā€¦ gay sex on the tennis court. This year is looking to be quite interesting!ā€™
Diamond by exAm: another top 3 for me in terms of lawlight being funny and horrible. one of if not The best het lawlight dynamic i've ever read (man light/woman L, in this case). light is such an egotistical, stupid asshole here, hubris through the fucking roof, and it works fantastic. also fun to see L dealing w/ canon-typical DN sexism LMFAO
Back to then by LiveLongEatWell: this one just has great smut idk what else to say. shrugs. also L obsessively fucking himself into the worst possible scenario lolol here's how KIRA could've actually won
Trading Blows and Idle Hands by gayraito (Mercurial_Magic): more yotsuba smut shenanigans, very fun. honestly most things by this author are great, hard to pick just one... The Gift is also great and somewhat inspired some of my own android light in superegos (read my lawlight fics too šŸ«µ boy)
draw it out by emmerii: VERY noncon no-memories light. smiles. this one makes me actually insane hides in my evil little corner
actually if we're doing the more heavily dead dove ones, there's also Take Me With You or Let Me Follow by WhyDoesEverythingHappenSoMuch and I will take what's mine, create what god would never design by FlamesRise for the specific concept of L being a freak over L's corpse. necrophilia warning? :]
Kouyaku by Not_default: basically a KIRA wins au where L doesn't actually die. sometimes L deserves to be the one locked in the basement ig. very very nice
The Dreadful Need by the_gabih: somewhat non-traditional omegaverse au that is also just about very dubcon prison sex. this makes my brain fucking melt please don't ask why
Perfect Life by foreskinsmoothie: probably the longest thing on this list, this one Fucked Me Up when i finished it a couple weeks ago. OCD light to the extreme, which is additionally Made Worse by L kidnapping him for shits and giggles šŸ‘ that being said, i absolutely adore the ending of this one, so. if you can get past the graphic self-amputation, this is a (very fucked up) lil treat :>
Kira's Guide to the Munchies by plant1r: ok this is more like matsulight but i have to include it for light's characterization alone, AND ALSO NEAR. one of the best near depictions ever. this is hysterical, my favorite weed light fic everrr
praise the sweetness by cxtangerina: read my fic boy šŸ«µ cult leader L au. unreality apocalypse world wammy's cult weirdness. what more can i say. this is probably gonna have a meronia sequel in the near future so watch out for that (after i post this other lawlight fic anyway, which is ALMOSTTT done uwu everybody clap)
that enuf for you anon?

Note
Oh my god. The new fic? Hello?!! That was amazing. Better than amazing. I had to actively keep going off it and then get back to reading it because I never wanted it to end and wow it gave me goosebumps big time with the writing. I actually donā€™t think Iā€™m going to be able to stop thinking about it for weeks. And the end? PERFECT. I love it so much, thank you for taking the time to share it with us šŸ«¶šŸ»
I had so much fun writing the Christmas fic! It was honestly a blast and it was one of those projects that I just kept having ideas for! It just kept getting longer and longer until it was like 20 pages and I had to cut myself off lol.
I'm just glad it's finally out in the universe for everyone else to read and enjoy, as long as it's out of my head I don't need anything else

SAGAU Liyue - Holiday Special 2024
Summary: ā€œA Christmas surprise party with a Liyuean twist ā€” the perfect gift planned for you by the two young girls who wanted you to feel more at home. How could you NOT have fun with it?ā€
Word Count: ~10.4k
The pleasant fragrance of mixed herbs, similar to the bunches of purple and white ones held in your arms, hit your nose as you stepped through the doorway of Bubu Pharmacy, the figures of two small girls by your side. With the variety of medicinal herbs stored within its walls, it was no surprise that it smelled great whenever you visited, no matter whether morning, noon, or night.
ā€œYour Graceā€¦? Why, I certainly hope youā€™re not here because you require my aid?ā€
Your gaze rose from the herbs to see Baizhu with a smile on his face, subtle surprise etched into his expression. Changsheng matched his gaze, raising her head up to better look at you.
ā€œOh, Iā€™m fine, doc. I was just helping Qiqi with her wildcrafting.ā€ You lifted your arms up just so, showing off everything you gathered with a proud smile, as the aforementioned zombie raised her own arms up to place the batch of herbs she collected on the counter. ā€œI had to climb along so many cliffs and mountain peaks, but I got ā€˜em! I didnā€™t let a single one I saw go unplucked!ā€
Baizhu seemed to get more surprised, but it quickly melted into a calmer smile. ā€œYou neednā€™t exert yourself like that, Your Grace, but I thank you for your assistance. Itā€™s much appreciated.ā€
You handed the herbs to Herbalist Gui, who visibly jolted when your hand brushed against his during the exchange. He excused himself so quickly after that he almost tripped and dropped the bundles everywhere, but managed to get away with everything held tightly in his arms and a flustered look on his face. It wasnā€™t anything that you werenā€™t already fully used to at this point.
ā€œAw, thereā€™s no need to be so formal with me. In fact, if you ever need some rare or hard-to-get ingredient, you can always ask me. Itā€™s no trouble at all! I like helping you and Qiqu out, honest.ā€
ā€œHmmā€¦ then Iā€™ll keep that in mind.ā€
ā€œYour Grace, you worked really hard today!ā€ Yaoyao piped up, drawing your attention to her and her bright smile. ā€œI think you deserve a break! We can handle anything else that comes up.ā€
You lightly exhaled. ā€œHuh? I know I said I did a lot, but Iā€™m actually not that tired-ā€
ā€œI insist! In fact, Iā€™m sure my master would love to sit down and have tea with you. Itā€™s been some time since youā€™ve personally visited her, right? She still talks a lot about the last time!ā€
ā€œIā€¦ guess I can go see her, then?ā€ You were still smiling, if a bit confused now, but you waved off the four as you began to leave. ā€œIā€™ll see you all around. Donā€™t get into too much trouble, ā€˜kay?ā€
The moment you were out of sight, down the pharmacyā€™s stairs, Yaoyao turned to her friend.
ā€œYou got everything written down, right?ā€
ā€œ...mmm, yeah.ā€
The zombie slowly took out her notebook, flipping it open to the newest page, which was filled with scribbles. Her handwriting made it hard to make out some words, but a closer look made most of them legible enough to read; some of the words were bigger than others, emphasizing their importance, but the biggest one was centered almost in the middle ā€” ā€œChristmasā€.
Yaoyao smiled brightly, gently taking the notebook out of Qiqiā€™s hands and holding it up as she looked at it. ā€œPerfect! Now we can make sure to tell everyone about everything we learned!ā€
ā€œAnd whatā€™s this about?ā€ Baizhu peered down at the girls from his spot behind the counter. ā€œScheming behind Their Graceā€™s back after getting Them to leave? Thatā€™s not very nice.ā€
Changsheng scoffed. ā€œItā€™s downright rude!ā€
ā€œItā€™s for a good reason! Wellā€¦ sort of.ā€ Yaoyao turned the notebook around to show the doctor its pages. ā€œWhile we were gathering herbs, Their Grace started telling us about Their home, and They mentioned this one celebrationā€¦ ā€œCriss-missā€? Thatā€™s how They pronounced it. And, They seemed a bit sad when talking, so Iā€™ve decided that we should throw Them a ā€œChristmas partyā€!ā€
Qiqi raised her arms in the air, mimicking Yaoyao. ā€œPartyā€¦!ā€
ā€œOoohā€¦ā€ There was a hint of interest in Baizhuā€™s smile. ā€œThat sounds quite nice.ā€
ā€œYeah, and everyone can help make it a big surprise!ā€ Yaoyao closed the notebook and gave it back to Qiqi. ā€œSo forgive me, Dr. Baizhu, but I have to borrow Qiqi for a bit. Weā€™ve a lot to plan!ā€
ā€œVery well, but stay safe, you two!ā€
The doctor called out as the two girls set out, hand in hand as they took the first step towards their goal ā€” throwing the Divine Creator a surprise ā€œChristmas partyā€ with the other vessels.

There was always one thing on the top of your to-do list whenever you visited Liyue, and that was making a trip to Wanmin Restaurant. Even when the other restaurants tried to catch your attention, you usually passed them by; they werenā€™t bad at all, by any means, but there was just something about Wanmin that dragged you back in for a meal whenever you were in the harbor.
And Chef Mao never complained about the big boost of business he got after one of your visits.
ā€œChef Mao!ā€
You smiled at the man as you approached, the delicious scents wafting from the restaurantā€™s kitchen already invading your nostrils from half a street away. You were able to identify some of the restaurantā€™s dishes by scent alone, but there were also new ones you werenā€™t familiar with.
ā€œYour Grace, itā€™s an honor!ā€ Chef Mao smiled at you from his spot behind the counter. ā€œAre you having your usual today? I always stock up on extra ingredients whenever I hear youā€™re around.ā€
You let out a long hum. ā€œMaybeā€¦ but Iā€™m also feeling kind of adventurous todayā€¦ā€
The sight of a familiar panda-esque bear poking his head out around the corner of the doorway to the kitchen cut off your train of thought, your smile reappearing as you turned towards him.
ā€œOh, Guoba! Hello!ā€
The bear flinched at being spotted, hurrying back into the kitchen and leaving you staring at the spot he had just been in. You couldnā€™t ignore the clanging of metal that soon followed from inside the kitchen, before hearing a familiar voice exclaim, ā€œTheyā€™re here?! Right now?!ā€, which in itself was followed by the restaurantā€™s head chef stumbling out of the kitchen, Guoba on her heels.
Xiangling looked a bit unkempt, dusting herself off before looking at you with a smile.
ā€œYour Grace, itā€™s an honor!ā€
Like father, like daughter.
ā€œXiangling, are youā€¦ā€ You gave her a once-over, taking note of the various splatters of colorful spices and sauces decorating her from head-to-toe, like an abstract art-piece. ā€œ...okay?ā€
Her smile became sheepish as she followed your gaze, looking down at herself briefly before looking back up at you. ā€œAhaā€¦ yeah, I was justā€¦ surprised youā€™re here. I wasnā€™t expecting it.ā€
ā€œOhā€¦ sorry for the surprise. I just wanted to get some lunch.ā€
Xiangling nodded. ā€œThen Iā€™ll get right on that! The usual?ā€
ā€œActually, something smells really good in the kitchen. Whatā€™re you cooking?ā€
ā€œUh, itā€™sā€¦ umā€¦ Iā€™m kind of just working something new out, Iā€¦ā€
Xiangling averted her eyes, her gaze looking at everything but you before it ended up on Guoba, asking him for help. The bear lightly flinched, his own eyes widening as he babbled incoherently.
ā€œOh, Your Grace.ā€
The cool tone of Shenheā€™s voice cut through the air, cutting off Guoba and almost forcing your attention to shift itself over to her. Her hands held a large wooden crate that leaned against her body, the contents no doubt too heavy for any mere mortal to lift despite the ease at which the woman in front of you was handling it, and you watched as she calmly looked at Xiangling.
ā€œHere. I gathered everything you said you might need for your secret dishes.ā€
That made you look at Xiangling again. ā€œOooh, secret dishes?ā€
The head chef looked ready to pass out, before she quickly shook her head and calmed down.
ā€œW-Well, you seeā€¦ā€ Xiangling fidgeted before she sighed, only to perk up moments later as an idea entered her head. ā€œActually, I could use your help. Yaoyao recently told me that you told her about this thing called ā€œChristmasā€...? And she mentioned a few dishes that are supposed to be made for it, but Iā€™m struggling to figure them out since all Iā€™ve got are the names of the dishes.ā€
ā€œYouā€™reā€¦ trying to make Christmas dishes?ā€
Xiangling nodded. ā€œYep! Because, you knowā€¦ itā€™s food from another world! Your world! Iā€™d really like to learn how to make dishes from your home, Your Grace! Iā€™m sure theyā€™re super tasty!ā€
That made perfect sense to you.
ā€œYou donā€™t need to be nervous asking for help, Xiangling. Iā€™d be glad to give you a hand.ā€
ā€œThank you, Your Grace!ā€
You ended up sitting down at one of the nearby tables ā€” even though it wasnā€™t necessarily a quiet hour for business, one table quickly became cleared up once you needed it ā€” after your order was made with Xiangling right by your side, the chef eagerly listening as you told her all about some of the more common Christmas dishes that came to your mind between bites of your lunch. You tried your best to explain the dishes as much as you could, sparing no detail.
The variety was wide, from baked ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, candied sweet potatoesā€¦ even if you never personally had some of the dishes you listed out, you still named them and described what you had heard they were like.
ā€œOh, and thereā€™s usually a roasted turkey.ā€
Xiangling blinked, an interested glimmer in her eyes. ā€œTurkey?ā€
ā€œYeah, itā€™sā€¦ a kind of bird. I donā€™t think Teyvat has anything quite like them, thoughā€¦ oh!ā€ You raised your utensils up, pointing at Xiangling. ā€œThereā€™s this one dish called a ā€œTurduckenā€ that some people have, where you stuff a chicken into a duck, then stuff that duck into a turkey.ā€
ā€œSo itā€™s aā€¦ three-bird roast?ā€
ā€œYep!ā€
ā€œThat sounds interestingā€¦ and I could do the chicken and duck part, but without a turkeyā€¦ā€
ā€œI think some people use a goose instead of a turkey.ā€ You lightly tapped your chin with your utensils. ā€œEven in my world, turkeys are only available and easy to obtain in certain areas.ā€
Xiangling thought for a moment, before a smile returned to her face and she nodded.
ā€œAlright, I think I can do thatā€¦ no, I definitely can do that! Iā€™ll make the best Christmas dishes ever! I canā€™t wait to try them myself! Thank you so much for all of your help, Your Grace!ā€
ā€œItā€™s no problem.ā€ You laid your utensils down on your empty dish, wiping your mouth off with a napkin before you stood up. ā€œI just hope you allow me to taste-test them when youā€™re done.ā€
Xiangling let out a slight laugh, looking away nervously. ā€œY-Yeah, of course youā€™ll be able to!ā€
You gave Shenhe a word of thanks as she collected your empty lunch dishes, and gave Chef Mao and Xiangling a hearty wave goodbye as you left, only making it past the neighboring shop before a horde of people rushed by you. You glanced over your shoulder to see them all queuing up at the restaurant, and sighed from knowing that you were the sole reason for the lunch rush.
Xiangling loudly exhaled the moment you were out of sight, her whole body relaxing at the same time. Guoba copied her movements, before smiling up at the young girl and babbling briefly.
ā€œShenhe!ā€ Xianglingā€™s cheeks puffed out a bit as she looked up at the tall woman. ā€œPlease be more careful! Iā€™m lucky I was able to get some advice out of it and that Their Grace didnā€™t catch onto the plan, but it wouldā€™ve been super bad if They found out! It wouldā€™ve ruined the surprise!ā€
Shehne blinked. ā€œ...ah, my apologies, but I did state that your new dishes are a secret, didnā€™t I?ā€
ā€œYouā€™re not supposed to say that itā€™s a secret out loud!ā€
ā€œAhem, Xiangling! Shenhe! I could use a little help here!ā€
The two ladies ā€” and Guoba ā€” looked over to see Chef Mao overwhelmed at the restaurantā€™s counter. They could hear most of the customers asking for ā€œwhat the Divine Creator orderedā€.
ā€œSorry, dad! Weā€™ll be right on it!ā€
Xiangling and Guoba hurried back into the kitchen, the clanging of metal starting up again as they began to prep food to serve, and Shenhe returned to the dining area to clean the tables so that some of the customers would have a place to sit when dining on the dayā€™s ā€œpopular dishā€.
Chef Mao sighed. ā€œ...and this is why I make sure to order extra ingredients.ā€
- - - - -
Even with many pairs of eyes staring at you for almost the entire time you were passing by, walking around Liyue Harbor was usually a peaceful and pleasant experience; the stares you received from the locals were mostly of awe, and they never tried to get into your actual space, instead always keeping a respectful distance that allowed your walk to go without a hindrance.
But those were just the behaviors of the normal folk.
Your vessels were of a completely different sort.
ā€œYour Graceā€¦!ā€
You had been strolling near the docks, admiring the ships out at sea, only to look in front of you to see Xinyan ā€” who had called out to you ā€” and Yun Jin coming to a stop before you. The two had to take a minute to catch their breath, Xinyan even having to place her hands on her knees.
ā€œXinyan? Yun Jin?ā€ You looked between the two performers with a concerned frown on your lips, your eyebrows furrowed. ā€œAre you two alright? Why were you running? Is something wrongā€¦?ā€
The rocker stood up straight with a smile on her face, shaking her hands out as she shook her head. ā€œItā€™s nothing bad, Your Grace. Whew, I just finished up a real blazinā€™ performance, so-ā€
ā€œHalt!ā€
Your head swiveled in the direction of the shout, seeing the two girls follow suit from the corner of your eye, just to see a couple of Millelith soldiers with gazes solely focused on Xinyan. They came to a stop next to you and the performers, not having to catch their breath like the latter.
The rocker frowned. ā€œShoot.ā€
The two soldiers stared Xinyan down, one tapping his polearm on the ground. ā€œMiss Xinyan, you have been charged with multiple fire code violations. You canā€™t just keep running away from us.ā€
ā€œThe only thing that got burned was the stage I built myselfā€¦ā€
ā€œThatā€™s not an excuse. Someone still could have gotten hurt.ā€
ā€œOh, okayā€¦ that makes sense.ā€ You smiled at Xinyan. ā€œYou were running from the law, huh?ā€
The sound of your voice, your tone a bit amused, made the soldiers finally take notice of your presence, and the way they were taken aback to realize that it was you made your smile grow just a little bit more. Their eyes went wide, and they seemed to lose any and all strength in their stances ā€” if only for a moment before they corrected themselves, their faces now a light pink.
ā€œAck- the Divine Creator?ā€
The soldiers fumbled with their weapons before bowing to you.
ā€œForgive us for not acknowledging you, Your Grace. It was rude of us!ā€
ā€œItā€™s not a big deal, guys. You two are just doing your jobs, focusing on handling crime-ā€
Your attention briefly shifted itself back to Xinyan, who was clearly trying to tell you something through just her gaze and body posture. Her head made wide turns as she looked between you and the Millelith soldiers, the sparkle in her eyes conveying a plea as dramatic as a rock opera.
ā€œBUTā€¦! You can leave Xinyan to me.ā€
The rocker pumped a fist at your words, smiling wide once you received her signal.
ā€œIā€™m sure you have more important matters that take precedence over this situation? I can make sure that Xinyan receives a punishment befitting her fire code violations. Consider it dealt with.ā€
The soldiers blinked a few times, before glancing at each other.
ā€œIsā€¦ is that allowed?ā€
ā€œItā€™s the Divine Creator. They should be able to handle itā€¦ right?ā€
They looked back at you after a quiet moment of deliberation amongst themselves, giving you a nod in affirmation. ā€œVery well. We shall leave this matter in your capable hands, Your Grace.ā€
You continued to smile as you watched the soldiers hesitantly leave, casting glances over their shoulders at you before they disappeared out of your sight, before you looked at the performers.
ā€œ...Iā€™m surprised that that worked. I didnā€™t think theyā€™d accept that I have any authority for this.ā€
ā€œBut itā€™s a good thing it did!ā€ Xinyan smiled. ā€œThanks for helping me out, Your Grace!ā€
Yun Jin hummed as her head tilted. ā€œWhat kind of punishment would you even give Xinyan?ā€
You thought for a moment, putting a finger on your chin, before you smiled again.
ā€œEternal banishment?ā€
ā€œAw, shucks.ā€ Xinyan continued to smile brightly, even as faux disappointment laced itself into her voice and a small chuckle escaped her lips. ā€œAinā€™t that just a bit too harsh, Your Grace?ā€
You snorted, rolling your eyes before focusing on the rocker again. ā€œI suppose so. Just be more careful, okay? I doubt youā€™d actually end up hurting someone during a performance, but still.ā€
ā€œSince youā€™re the one saying to, Your Graceā€¦ā€
You shared another small laugh with Xinyan before noticing Yun Jin perk up, her eyes widening as if she had just had a sudden thought, and you found her red eyes looking right into your eyes.
ā€œOh, Your Grace, if you have the time, we actually require some of your help-ā€
ā€œWell, now, whatā€™s with all the commotion here?ā€
With the suddenness of a cheap indie jumpscare, a familiar figure popped up from between your little trio, springing onto her feet with her usual smile plastered on her face. The question of when she had snuck so close was wholly forgotten as Xinyan, Yun Jin, and you reacted appropriately.
ā€œWha- Hu Tao!ā€ You clutched a hand to your chest. ā€œAre you trying to give us all heart attacks?ā€
ā€œOh, no, no no! Itā€™s far too early for you three!ā€ The unwavering smile of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor director did little too soothe you, especially when she winked. ā€œButā€¦ if youā€™re ever feeling unwell, Your Grace, I hope youā€™ll choose our humble business to make your exit a smooth one!ā€
ā€œDirector Hu, I highly doubt Their Grace will require our services anytime in the near future.ā€
ā€œHehe, you can never know~!ā€
The director was, of course, accompanied by the parlorā€™s consultant. His golden gaze moved from his boss to you, a hint of fondness softening the stoic expression displayed on his face.
ā€œZhongli!ā€ You smiled at the sight of the consultant, Yun Jin and Xinyan greeting him with a bow and a wave respectively. ā€œAm I to assume you two are currently on another advertising kick?ā€
ā€œYep, yep!ā€ Hu Tao nodded. ā€œNew clients are always guaranteed, but we still must make sure all potential clients know exactly where all their farewell needs will be dealt with the proper respect.ā€
You hummed before looking at Zhongli. ā€œAnd how many future clients have you two convinced?ā€
ā€œThe directorā€¦ managed to get plenty of attention towards our business.ā€
Hu Tao playfully laughed. ā€œHey now, only time will tell how many clients take up our offer.ā€
You snorted and shook your head. ā€œYouā€¦ are certainly a handful, Hu Tao.ā€
ā€œMmm-hmm! But enough about me! Whatā€™s been going on with you three? While passing by, I couldnā€™t help but notice that you three all seemed to be having quite an interesting time together.ā€
ā€œJust saving Xinyan from the Millelith, I suppose- oh!ā€ You swiveled on your heel to face Yun Jin once more. ā€œRight, you were asking for my help with something? What do you need from me?ā€
Yun Jin perked up again, seeming to remember she was about to request something before the shock of the funeral parlorā€™s staff arrival interrupted her, and nodded. ā€œThatā€™s right, Your Grace. I was just going to ask you aboutā€¦ I believe itā€™s called ā€œChristmasā€ music? Yaoyao told us about it recently, and we were interested in learning more about it. We hoped that youā€™d help with that.ā€
ā€œHuh? Oh, yeah!ā€ Xinyan sported a brief look of confusion on her face before she also nodded, a smile appearing on her lips. ā€œIt sounds mighty interesting, Your Grace! Iā€™d love to learn enough to perform music from your world! Iā€™m sure there're plenty of rockinā€™ tunes you could tell us about.ā€
It took you a moment to process what they had said.
ā€œYou guysā€¦ want to learn about Christmas music?ā€
ā€œOooh!ā€ Hu Tao leaned over your shoulder. ā€œMusic from Their Graceā€™s world? Count me in!ā€
Your gaze moved between the three ladies ā€” the rocker, the opera singer, and the poet ā€” who all stared back at you with interested gazes, before it flickered over to Zhongli, whose demeanor was more alert than it usually was around youā€¦ which you honestly should have expected; that he of all people would be interested in learning more about you in any capacity was no surprise.
ā€œUhā€¦ I guess I can teach you guys the songs I know? But donā€™t expect me to write down any of the melodies or anything. I have no skills in musical notation, especially if itā€™s just from memory.ā€
Xinyan waved her hand in dismissal. ā€œYou can just sing them for us, Your Grace.ā€
ā€œWha- wait, what? Me, sing?ā€
ā€œTo hear the Divine Creator singā€¦ā€ Zhongli mused to himself, arms crossed with a finger held up to his chin. ā€œ...that would be quite the honor. It would make Glaze Lilies full-bloom, no doubt.ā€
You let out a weak laugh. ā€œI-Iā€™m not too sure about thatā€¦ā€
ā€œAw, come on, come on!ā€ Hu Tao grabbed onto your shoulder, leaning in even closer, her face inches from your own. ā€œSome people would find the chance to hear you sing worthy to die for!ā€
You took in a sharp inhale as you practically felt the hopes and expectations emitting from the four people around you, and eventually let out a long sigh, your shoulders coming to a slump.
ā€œ...fine, but how about we all go somewhereā€¦ not so public first?ā€
- - - - -
The two blue-haired boys in front of you each had a different expression on their face, one of which was a look of concern ā€” though he was clearly trying to keep himself cool at the same time ā€” while the other was fighting to hide the subtle hints of a smirk creeping onto his lips.
Your own face was a perfect display of confusion. ā€œIā€¦ Iā€™m sorry? What is this about?ā€
ā€œYour Grace, Iā€™ve heard rumors of aā€¦ a ā€œChristmasā€ demon! But Iā€™m unfortunately without any knowledge on what type of fiend it may be. Iā€™m going to require your assistance to exorcise it.ā€
You stared at the young exorcist in front of you for a few seconds before looking to the second son of the Feiyun Commerce Guild, catching him hiding his laughter and disguising a snort that escaped as a cough with a closed fist over his mouth, and you slowly furrowed your eyebrows.
ā€¦that explains it.
ā€œWell-ā€ You looked at Chongyun again. ā€œ-the only Christmas ā€œdemonā€ I know of is ā€œKrampusā€.ā€
Chongyun raised a hand to his chin. ā€œSuch a sinister nameā€¦ please, can you tell me everything you know about it? I must know as much as I can about the fiend in order to be able to stop it.ā€
ā€œIt kind of depends on who you ask, but, basically, Krampus is a demon who punishes naughty children around the time Christmas is celebrated. You knowā€¦ the kind of children who cause a lot of trouble for other people, who misbehave and donā€™t play nice, who lie for no good reason.ā€
You glanced at Xingqiu, who had gone still with an almost worried smile at your expression.
ā€œHeā€™s covered in dark hair, has horns and hooves and fangs, and a long pointed tongue ā€” oh, and he carries around chains, I think? Sometimes with bells. The punishments he doles out on bad children are stuff like swatting them on the butts with branchesā€¦ or snatching them away in a basket to who-knows-where. To drown them or eat themā€¦ or something along those lines.ā€
ā€œThatā€¦ thatā€™s horrible!ā€ Chongyun appeared to actually get a bit heated as you spoke, his hands clenching into tight fists in front of his chest. ā€œI must make sure to stop it before it hurts anyone!ā€
ā€œWhoa there, Chongyun. Calm down and have a popsicle, ā€˜kay?ā€ You let your lips curve up into a smile, and put a hand on the exorcistā€™s shoulder. ā€œKrampus sure is a horrible guy and allā€¦ but heā€™s also fictional; just a character that parents tell their children about to make them behave, to teach them lessons about being nice and stuff. Heā€™s not actually real ā€” well, not that I know of, anyway ā€” and, even if he was, he wouldnā€™t be anywhere in Teyvat. Heā€™d be stuck in my world.ā€
Chongyunā€™s breathing was heavy, his face already flushed, but he managed to take one of his popsicles out and bite into it to calm himself. ā€œUgh, Your Graceā€¦ you couldā€™ve started with that.ā€
ā€œI know, Iā€™m sorry. I wonā€™t do it again.ā€ You let go of Chongyunā€™s shoulder. ā€œBut howā€™d you even hear about Krampus? I donā€™t think Iā€™ve told anyone about him before right now with you two.ā€
ā€œXingqiu told me about it.ā€
The guilty party put his hands up in defense as you looked at him. ā€œH-Hey, I was just having a little fun. I honestly had no idea that there was actually a demon associated with Christmas.ā€
ā€œAn unlucky guess then, huh?ā€ You paused for a moment. ā€œ...but howā€™d you even hear about Christmas? Did Yaoyao tell you about it too? It seems like the talk of the harbor nowadaysā€¦ā€
That innocent line of questioning had a greater chilling effect than his popsicle, it seemed, as Chongyun froze at the moment. Xingqiu stepped in and quickly pushed his friend aside, your hand leaving the exorcistā€™s shoulder to linger in the air. ā€œShe did inform us of it, yes. It sounds like a quaint holiday, so it makes sense that a child such as herself would want to tell everyone she knows about it. I admit, it has even perked my interest too, from everything Iā€™ve been told.ā€
ā€œ...huh, thatā€™s nice. Iā€™m glad everyone seems to be enjoying the concept.ā€
There was something off about all this, but not in a bad way, so you brushed it off for now.
Xingqiu nodded as he continued to smile at you happily. ā€œBut now that thatā€™s settled, we should get going. Iā€™m sure youā€™ve got a busy schedule, Your Grace. We wouldnā€™t want to hold you up.ā€
Chongyun blinked, coming back to reality. ā€œAh, wait-ā€
ā€œTsk, Chongyun, youā€™re still all red. You should have another popsicle.ā€
The exorcist didnā€™t get a chance to speak again before Xingqiu stuffed another tasteless frozen treat into his mouth, the latter then hurriedly pushing his flustered friend away down the street.
ā€œIt was pleasant to speak with you, Your Grace!ā€
The two boys soon disappeared into the distance, leaving you standing there alone.
ā€œUhā€¦ bye, I guess?ā€
- - - - -
Another day, another surprise.
You blinked a few times, making sure that the lady you were looking at was actually there. You didnā€™t exactly have a history of having hallucinations, but everything had beenā€¦ bizarre this last week or so, and it wouldnā€™t hurt you to just check that you were still all there up in your noggin.
ā€œLady Ningguang?ā€
ā€œYour Grace, what a pleasant surprise.ā€
The Tianquan was calm, politely greeting you with a soft smile on her lips, a smile reserved for you and you alone. Her being was a living display of high-class status, the epitome of luxuryā€¦
ā€¦and she was currently just hanging out at the docks.
You were not someone who could criticize her for it, though; for some people, it was odd for you to be hanging around Liyue Harborā€™s docks so casually, as no one really expected to see one of the gods they worshiped watching the ships or examining the goods of incoming, docked ships.
ā€œUhā€¦ so, whatā€™re you doing here? Taking in the ocean breeze?ā€
Ningguang chuckled. ā€œI simply have business to discuss with Beidou. Itā€™s nothing of concern, but is important enough that I have decided to come see her myself as soon as she arrives.ā€
ā€œWait, the Alcor is docking soon?ā€ You perked up, your gaze glancing between the water and Ninguang, who looked at the water herself. ā€œWow, my timingā€™s great! Mind if I wait with you?ā€
ā€œIā€™d see it as an honor, Your Grace.ā€
You got into position beside Ningguang, leaning forward slightly as you looked out at the ships sailing across the nearby waters. The operation at the harbor was always so smooth, orderly, and satisfying ā€” you were embarrassed to admit how much time you had spent just lingering around the docks whenever you visited Liyue, being a bystander to the comings and goings of the ships and the people working here. This time, however, you were trying to focus on spotting the Alcor among the other seacraft, assuming its distinct design would stand out among them.
The moment was quiet, aside from the waves and workers, until Ningguang spoke again.
ā€œYour Grace, Iā€™m planning to do a bit of decorating around the Jade Chamber.ā€
ā€œOh?ā€
ā€œI was thinking about adding a tree.ā€
You paused for a few seconds, before slowly looking at Ningguang. ā€œAā€¦ tree?ā€
ā€œYes, a tree. Would you have any suggestions for the type?ā€
Wow.
You suddenly forgot about every tree you have ever known about.
ā€œAh, hmmā€¦ well, itā€™s your Jade Chamber. You should choose whichever tree you prefer. I know youā€™ve got good taste, and will be able to fit anything you choose into your amazing aesthetics.ā€
ā€œI should choose, you sayā€¦? Very well.ā€
You soon settled back into a comfortable silence, continuing to wait on the docks with subdued excitement pumping through your veins, before finally catching the sight of the Alcor making its way over to the docks. It took a while for the ship to actually dock, having to navigate around the multiple others nearby, but the moment that it had, Ningguang and you made your way over to it.
You passed by some of the crew members unloading various types of cargo, before seeing the captain of the ship walk down the gangplank, who smiled when she saw you and the Tianquan.
ā€œThe Tianquan AND Their Grace are here to greet me? Something serious must be up, huh?ā€
ā€œOh, no, nothing like that!ā€ You smiled. ā€œI just got lucky to be here as you got back.ā€
ā€œHaha, you flatter me, Your Grace. Iā€™d typically consider myself the lucky one.ā€
Ningguang shook her head just slightly, her expression more reserved than yours. ā€œAlthough itā€™s not of any major concern, I do have something to discuss with you, Captain Beidou. Shall we?ā€
ā€œHuh, alright.ā€
Beidou gave you a nod as she walked off with Ningguang to talk, the two women leaving you on your own. You found yourself curious about what they could be talking about, but figured it would be rude to try and eavesdrop or force yourself into the conversation; that, and your attention was finding itself quickly caught by something ā€” or, rather, someone ā€” else that you noticed nearby.
ā€œKazuha!ā€
The lips of the wandering samurai turned up into a smile after he heard you call out to him, your form practically bouncing over to him. His eyes followed your movements as he turned to you.
ā€œGreetings, Your Grace.ā€ He gave you a polite nod. ā€œYou appear to be in good spirits.ā€
You waved your hand to the side, before letting it fall to your side in a loose fist. ā€œAw, Iā€™m always happy to see you. Itā€™s probably impossible to not be; actually, no, it definitely is impossible.ā€
Kazuha let out a soft chuckle, his shoulders bouncing with the tiniest movements. ā€œYour words today are as warm as the mid-afternoon sun, Your Grace. Iā€™m glad. How have you been lately?ā€
ā€œMmmā€¦ normal, I guess. Though it feels like something fishy is going on around the harbor.ā€
ā€œOhā€¦?ā€
You held back a snicker. ā€œGet it? Fishy? But, really, I feel like somethingā€™s up.ā€
ā€œThatā€™s troubling. I can lend you my assistance if you desire?ā€
ā€œHuh? Oh, no!ā€ You waved your hands in front of yourself, your eyes widening just a bit as you continued to smile. ā€œIā€™m sure itā€™s nothing big, and, besides, I wouldnā€™t want to bog down our time together with worries. I donā€™t see you often enough since youā€™re always on the road, traveling.ā€
ā€œAh, of course. If youā€™d like to hear it, Iā€™ve come up with some new poetry since we last met.ā€
ā€œOooh! Then go ahead and bless my ears, Kazuha.ā€
The hustle and bustle of the docks faded away as you chatted with Kazuha, intently listening to each and every one of the poetic words falling from his mouth. You even tried coming up with a few poems yourself, but it was difficult to do it on the fly; the praise Kazuha gave your attempts kept you from being discouraged, though some of the metaphors you tried to use felt a lot more poetic in your mind than when you said them out loud. You were in the middle of thinking up how to describe a certain line in your next masterpiece when you realized a lot of time had passed.
You felt a presence approach from the side, and looked up to see Beidou standing there.
Ningguang was nowhere to be found when you gave your surroundings a quick once-over, her elegant presence absent from the nearby crowds, and that meant she must have left long ago.
The captain looked between you and Kazuha, her smile apologetic when her gaze stopped on you. ā€œSorry, Your Grace, but I have something to talk about with Kazuha. Hope you donā€™t mind.ā€
ā€œHmm? Oh, wellā€¦ thatā€™s fine. I should probably be going anyhow. See you around!ā€
You bid the two farewell, seeing them respond in kind, and started walking away from them.
Beidou kept her eye on you until you were completely gone, and she turned to Kazuha.
ā€œOkay, so, thereā€™s this thing called ā€œChristmasā€...ā€
- - - - -
ā€œPlease accept my offering, oā€™ great adeptus, and bless me with your presence this quiet night.ā€
ā€œ...you donā€™t have to do that, Your Grace.ā€
The evening air was cool, gentle breezes rolling in from the distance and brushing against you where you stood on the highest balcony in Wangshu Inn. The lanterns from inside and hanging by the doorway cast a warm glow outwards, giving the balcony a cozy atmosphere despite how it faced the dark landscapes of Bishui Plain, the warm hues of the land hidden within shadows.
Your hands held tightly onto a plate of Almond Tofu ā€” expertly and lovingly crafted by your own hands, you were proud to admit ā€” as you smiled at the familiar figure that appeared before you, the sight of the innā€™s resident adeptus never failing to bring you joy. The dim lighting made it hard to tell, as well as his usual distant demeanor, but you swore that he was looking a little flustered.
ā€œAww, why not? Everyone else does it.ā€
Xiao crossed his arms over his chest. ā€œBut youā€™re not ā€œeveryone elseā€.ā€
ā€œHmph.ā€ You pouted, extending your arms out to present the Almond Tofu to him. ā€œHere, you can at least take this. I made it special, just for you. I worked hard to learn the recipe, from the best.ā€
He stared down at the plate in your hands for a few seconds, before he slowly uncrossed his arms and carefully took it from you. The adeptus continued to stare at the food you prepared while you stared at him, the faintest hint of a blush on his cheeks ā€” you internally cursed to yourself about the lack of decent lighting in this moment ā€” before he finally took the first bite.
You spent just a moment watching Xiao carefully savor your expert culinary craftsmanship, and then looked out at the water and shadowed silhouettes of the nearby mountains, leaning yourself against the wooden railing of the balcony. The wood was cold and rough within your tight grip.
ā€œ...you know, everyoneā€™s been acting really strange lately. Not in a bad way, but still.ā€
Your lips parted as you sighed, adjusting your arms to have your elbows on the railing.
ā€œEven the other adepti are being weird. I tried to visit Cloud Retainer in Liyue Harbor, but Shuyu told me that she was really busy, even though sheā€™s normally willing to take a break to chat with me whenever I drop by. Donā€™t even ask me how the other two are doing, I spent a good amount of time looking around their domains but wasnā€™t able to find them. It just feels likeā€¦ like Iā€™m being left out of something; like everyone is hiding something from me. Something that feelsā€¦ major.ā€
You turned your head to look at Xiao. ā€œWould you have any idea why?ā€
The adeptus briefly paused, his gaze meeting yours after having seemingly moved to you while you were talking, before wiping off the almond tofu around his mouth with the back of his hand.
ā€œIā€¦ā€
He hesitated, his eyes shifting away from you.
- - -
ā€œAs one of the Divine Creatorā€™s vessels, you HAVE to come.ā€ Hu Tao had a wide smile on her lips, her hands clenched together into tight fists in front of her chest. ā€œBesides, itā€™ll be totally fun!ā€
The adeptus looked uncertain, his gaze shifting to the man accompanying the funeral director.
Zhongli met Xiaoā€™s eyes with a soft smile, giving him a nod as well. ā€œIndeed. Their Grace seems to also be quite fond of this ā€œChristmasā€ business. It would be a shame if you did not participate.ā€
ā€œYeah, yeah!ā€ Hu Tao nodded frantically, bouncing into the space between the adeptus and her consultant to direct the attention back to herself. ā€œCome onā€¦! Itā€™ll only be the other vessels and adepti there. Thereā€™s no need to be all cautious and standoffish about it, so what do you sayā€¦?ā€
Xiao still looked conflicted, his eyebrows furrowed, before soon letting out a sigh.
ā€œ...very well. For the Divine Creatorā€™s sake.ā€
Hu Tao clapped her hands. ā€œYay!ā€
ā€œJust make sure to keep it a secret from Their Grace, if you end up encountering Them before then.ā€ Zhongli looked pleased with Xiaoā€™s answer, although he was much calmer than his boss was. ā€œItā€™s supposed to be a ā€œsurprise partyā€, so try to avoid spoiling its existence at all costs.ā€
The adeptus nodded, crossing his arms.
ā€œGot it.ā€
- - -
You couldnā€™t say for sure what exactly was going on inside Xiaoā€™s head, but the expression on his face made it look like he was having some kind of internal war with himself, a struggle with the proverbial ā€œrock and a hard placeā€ that left him not looking forward to picking either option he was presented with. This was probably the most readable his feelings had ever been to anyone.
ā€œUhā€¦ hey, you donā€™t have to answer, Xiao.ā€
The adeptus appeared to snap back to reality, blinking as he looked at you.
You slightly smiled as you pushed yourself off of the railing. ā€œI can kind of assume whatā€™s going on. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't going crazy and seeing something out of nothing.ā€
Xiaoā€™s lips parted, the softest exhale leaving them. ā€œ...I canā€™t lie to you, Your Grace.ā€
ā€œThen just donā€™t say anything.ā€
You winked at him, your tongue sticking out from your lips. ā€œAnd you should be busy eating the Almond Tofu I made you, anyways. Itā€™s rude to speak while your mouthā€™s full, donā€™tcha know?ā€
Xiao briefly glanced back down at the plate in his hands, before he nodded.
ā€œ...okay.ā€
- - - - -
ā€œYour presence is requested at the Jade Chamber.ā€
That was what you were told, but you werenā€™t able to think of any important reason of why that might be. You had always made sure to greatly distance yourself to the extreme from anything major regarding Liyueā€™s leadership ā€” no political decision-making or ā€œruling with an iron fistā€ for you, even if some folks acted like your word was the single most important thing in all of Teyvat.
The Yuheng and the general secretary both knew that about you very well.
ā€œIsā€¦ it for something important? Or does Ningguang just want to, likeā€¦ play chess with me?ā€
Ganyu and Keqing shared a brief look with each other, before the former looked back at you, a bit of a nervous frown now on her lips. ā€œItā€™sā€¦ nothing bad, but you should go see for yourself.ā€
ā€œHere.ā€ Keqing gestured for you to follow after her. ā€œWe can escort you.ā€
You looked down at Keqingā€™s hand for just a moment, before everything clicked.
The stranger-than-usual behavior of everyone latelyā€¦ the random-but-very-frequent mentions of Christmasā€¦ and now you being requested to such a place as the Jade Chamber practically out of the blue. You even thought about how you couldnā€™t find a single one of the vessels around the harbor today, despite how you walked through the entire city front-to-back and back-to-front and side-to-side, checking each and every nook and cranny with the hope of finding someone.
You smiled.
ā€œOh, no, thatā€™s okay. I can get us there quicker.ā€
You grabbed Keqingā€™s outstretched hand, the warm hue of her face matching Ganyuā€™s after you had grabbed the half-qilinā€™s hand too. Your grip was gentle but firm as you stood between them.
ā€œYou- Your Graceā€¦ā€
ā€œH-Hey, wait-!ā€
Within seconds, you heard the familiar teleporting sound resonate inside your head before you and your two current companions were warped up onto the platform of the Jade Chamberā€¦
ā€¦only to hear a muffled thud accompanying a sudden cold, wet sensation that landed on you.
It felt like a worse version of getting an ice cube put down the back of your shirt.
The powdery substance slid off of the upper-half of your face after you blinked your eyes a few times, which revealed to you that what had just covered you was a thick blanket of snow, and it had also trapped Keqing and Ganyu, turning you three into vaguely self-shaped snow mounds.
You were completely befuddled at this situation.
Snow? At this time of year, in this part of Liyue, localized entirely within the Jade Chamber?
You attempted to shift around, eventually managing to catch sight of the cause of the surprise snowfall. There was a strange machine that almost resembled a snowblower from your world, water being poured into one end and snow coming out of an upwards-chute-like exit located on the other end. The snow coming out now fell softly to the ground, unlike what had just hit you.
The one who created the device crossed her arms, pushing her glasses up slightly.
ā€œHmph. If the Divine Creator wishes for it to snow, then one shall make it snow.ā€
ā€œWow, Aunty Cloud Retainer! Youā€™re amazing!ā€
Yaoyao looked up at the adeptus with awe, clapping her hands with a bright smile.
You continued to look around ā€” as much as you could in your new form as a snowman ā€” and saw several others lingering about the area, all of which had been mysteriously missing today.
The musicians and performers were all gathered near a small stage that had been set up, doing last-minute checks and practice from what you could tell. You took a few moments to take in the sight of it before you snapped out of your thoughts and focused to hear them through the snow.
Gaming shook his hands out, Man Chai following his lead and shaking his whole body out. ā€œAha, Iā€™ve been practicing for days and everything, but Iā€™m still getting so nervous all of a suddenā€¦ā€
ā€œPre-show jitters, huh?ā€ Xinyan stood on the stage, fiddling with her guitar as she looked down at the Wushou dancer with a slight, unsure smile. ā€œCanā€™t help but have them myself right now too.ā€
Yun Jin walked across the stage, her head tilted up to check the decorations hanging up. ā€œTheir Grace is so kind, there shouldnā€™t be any reason to worryā€¦ but I can understand the feeling.ā€
ā€œHey, hey, just donā€™t get so nervous you have a heart attack.ā€ Hu Tao had the only smile near the stage free of hesitation. ā€œThe business would be nice, but it would be way too inconvenient now.ā€
There was another section where a buffet had been laid out, Xiangling hovering over the spread with her gaze flickering around to all the various dishes, almost like she was looking for anything that needed any last-minute adjustments made. Guoba stood on a chair next to the chef, putting his paws on the edge of the table as he looked between the dishes and at her with a happy aura.
ā€œI had to make a few guesses here and there about the recipes, even with the advice from Their Graceā€¦ā€ Xiangling furrowed her brows before letting out a sigh. ā€œI hope They like everything.ā€
ā€œIā€™m sure They will.ā€ Madame Ping had a gentle smile on her face as she glanced at the food the young chef had prepared. ā€œIt all looks and smells absolutely wonderful, thereā€™s no doubt about it.ā€
Beidou nodded and chuckled. ā€œNow, this is what I call a feast! You outdid yourself, Xiangling!ā€
ā€œIt all sure looksā€¦ interesting.ā€
Yanfei tilted her head, her eyes moving down along the long buffet table as she spoke.
ā€œIā€¦ Iā€™m having trouble making out what some of these dishes are, though.ā€
Xiangling smiled at the reassurances. ā€œOh, donā€™t worry. I can explain everything, if youā€™d like.ā€
Your attention, however, was soon captured by the main centerpiece of the whole occasion: a beautiful Sandbearer tree decorated with lanterns of all colors, all organized to create the most breathtaking sight you had seen all day. There were actually a lot of lanterns hanging around all over, now that you were conscious of their presence; it almost resembled Lantern Rite, in a way.
Well, a Lantern Rite that was being held on a very miniature scale.
ā€œThis is very pleasant.ā€ Kazuha looked up at the tree, his hand over his chest. ā€œI never imagined that a ā€œChristmas treeā€ would look like this. It brings to the mind a kaleidoscope of Crystalflies.ā€
Ningguang had her arms crossed, also standing nearby to admire the tree she had put up and decorated to a degree befitting her luxurious aesthetics. ā€œI was informed that the tree was to be decorated in lights and ornaments. I believe Their Grace will be quite pleased with the result.ā€
ā€œTheir Grace has some intriguing traditions from Their world.ā€ Zhongli placed a hand to his chin in thought, his eyes briefly breaking away from the tree. ā€œNo wonder They spoke of it so highly.ā€
By this point, you were getting cold. Way too cold. So cold you felt stiff.
You shook the snow off as you took in a deep breath.
ā€œOkay, that was an experienceā€¦ā€
ā€œYour Grace?!ā€
You felt two dozen pairs of eyes land on your form as everyoneā€™s head snapped towards your direction, the sound of your voice might as well having been a siren to their ears ā€” your arrival had been expected to be normal, after taking the long route instead of the shortcut you chose to take instead, with some semblance of warning. You smiled bashfully, pulling a now-unconscious Ganyu and Kequing out of their snow piles since you were still holding their hands all this time.
ā€œHeheā€¦ guess Iā€™m not the only one surprised at this surprise party, then?ā€
- - - - -
Today was the day you discovered how good Guoba and Man Chai made for living Warmies, your once-shivering and soaked body able to warm up and dry off after only a short but sweet cuddle session with them. The party couldnā€™t start until you were comfortable, after allā€¦ as well as until Keqing and Ganyu finally regained consciousness and also got themselves warmed up.
ā€¦and the start was unforgettable.
ā€œBehold, Your Grace-ā€
Truly unforgettable.
ā€œ-for one has donned the appearance of a Christmas hero spoken of in tales from your home.ā€
There, standing in front of you, were some of the adepti, and although the three ladies and Xiao were in their human forms at the party, the other two men were not. That included Moon Carver, the one who had spoken to you first when they approached, who proudly stood in front of you in his stag formā€¦ with a glowing red nose ā€” likely made possible by adepti magic, you assumed.
You briefly recalled telling Yaoyao and Qiqi about some stories related to Christmas, which, of course, included ā€œRudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeerā€. Turning slightly away for a moment, you raised a hand to cover the smile slowly growing on your lips as you tried to calm yourself down.
ā€œYeaaahā€¦ā€ Your voice wavered, you being unable to stop your eyes glancing to and from Moon Carver. ā€œChristmas wouldā€™ve been cancelled if not for Rudolph. Heā€™s aā€¦ a true hero, alrightā€¦ā€
The snort that slipped from your lips went unnoticed by Moon Carver, the adeptus preening at your approval. The planned festivities luckily continued on before you actually started laughing.
- - - - -
They had only had about a week to prepare, but the musical performance was probably one of the, if not the, best thing you had ever witnessed in your life; most everyone had gathered into a crowd in front of the stage as Xinyan, Hu Tao, and Gaming took their places in the spotlight. You were almost too enamoured with the show to notice how Yun Jin occasionally snuck a couple of glances at you from her spot in the crowd next to you, a smile growing on her lips at your own.
The musicians had taken the songs that you told ā€” or, rather, sang to ā€” them and used them as inspiration to come up with a brand-new Christmas song, complete with Xinyanā€™s rock guitar and Hu Taoā€™s iconic rapping. Gaming had even created a special routine to go along with all of it.
ā€œBravo!ā€ You clapped your hands frantically after the performance finished, a whoop escaping your lips as you cheered. ā€œThat wasā€¦ incredible! I loved it! Iā€™ve never seen anything like it!ā€
The sense of relief that left the performersā€™ bodies was noticeable, their forms relaxing as your praise finally casted away all of the tension that had plagued them from their pre-show nerves.
ā€œIā€™m glad, Your Grace.ā€ Yun Jin smiled. ā€œWe only had so much time, but we worked really hard.ā€
ā€œI can tell.ā€ Your cheeks hurt a little from how much you were smiling, and you tilted your head. ā€œI hope I get to see it again someday. That was way too good to be just a one-time performance.ā€
Gaming let out a chuckle, a sense of weariness in his tone. ā€œIā€™d be happy to dance for you again, Your Grace. Justā€¦ I still need a moment to calm down from the excitement of the first time.ā€
ā€œOh-ho! But Iā€™m ready for round two right now!ā€ Hu Tao pumped her fists as she snickered. ā€œI knew Their Grace couldnā€™t resist my excellent rhyming skills! I could do this all day, any day!ā€
Xinyan adjusted her grip on her guitar as she looked back at the stage they performed on. ā€œUh, I think we may have gone a little overboard with the pyrotechnics, thoughā€¦ even for me, hehā€¦ā€
You followed the rockerā€™s gaze to the stage, seeing that itā€¦ kind of didnā€™t exist anymore, with all that remained being a stage-shaped pile of charred wood. Given that three Pyro users had used it for their performance, where they had turned up the heat to give you the show of a lifetime, you should have expected this, especially considering Xinyanā€™s track record with this sort of thing.
You couldnā€™t help but let out a small laugh.
ā€œYeah, okay, I think one performance is enough for today, then.ā€
- - - - -
ā€œWow, I didnā€™t know you had such an appetite, Your Grace.ā€
Xianglingā€™s eyes were wide as she looked at your plate, which was piled high with servings from the buffet. There was a little of everything, as you wanted to try all of the different dishes that had been prepared by the chef; some looked traditional, and very close to what you had described to her about, while others clearly had creative choices made during their creation. There were also some traditional Liyue dishes being offered ā€” considering how many people were present at the party, Xiangling really made sure that there would be enough food for everyone to have their fill.
You held your plate carefully in front of you. ā€œI canā€™t help it. Everything looks so good.ā€
It appeared that many others also held the same opinion, almost everyone filling up their plates with various dishes from the buffet. There were plenty of options; everyone could eat something.
ā€œWhat is thisā€¦?ā€ Ganyu observed a red jam-like substance in one of the bowls, tapping it gently with the small spoon that was provided for folks to scoop it. ā€œIt smells like some kind of fruitā€¦?ā€
ā€œAh, thatā€™s Valberry sauce!ā€ Xiangling piped up and moved over to the half-qilin. ā€œTheir Grace mentioned a dish made with this type of berry called a ā€œCranberryā€, so I had to find a similar substitute. You should be able to eat it, Miss Ganyu. It doesnā€™t contain any animal products.ā€
ā€œWhat Iā€™m more interested in is that!ā€ Beidou pointed to what-could-be-considered the main dish of the whole spread, her eye and smile both wide. ā€œNow that looks like something real special.ā€
Xiangling smiled as she made her way over to the captain. ā€œThatā€™s a three-bird roast called a ā€œgooduckenā€. Itā€™s a chicken inside of a duck inside of a goose. I had to do a lot to get it right.ā€
Beidou let out a long hum. ā€œOooh, that sounds impressive! Iā€™ll have a big portion, then!ā€
ā€œI should try something new tooā€¦ā€ Keqing looked between her plate and the buffet, a small frown coming to her face. ā€œ...but all that Iā€™ve got on my plate is Golden Shrimp Balls so farā€¦ā€
ā€œAh! Chongyun! Qiqi! The cold dishes are over here.ā€ Xiangling directed the two over to one side of the buffet table, waving them over while gesturing to the dishes. ā€œThereā€™s plenty for you to try.ā€
ā€œHere, Iā€™ll help!ā€ Yaoyao scooped food onto Qiqiā€™s plate. ā€œThis looks good. Make sure to eat it all!ā€
ā€œOkay.ā€
Chongyun held his plate away from Xingqiu, his eyes shifting between his friend and the food he was putting onto his plate. ā€œPlease donā€™t try to sneak anything spicy onto my plate this time.ā€
ā€œWhy, I would never.ā€ Xingqiu chuckled, a hand held up in defense. ā€œWhat a random accusation.ā€
ā€œYour Graceā€¦ā€ Baizhu eyed your plate as you took a seat next to him, his gaze scanning all of the generous portions you served yourself. ā€œIā€™m not entirely knowledgeable on how much a god can eat, but make sure not to overstuff yourself. I canā€™t imagine itā€™d be good for your stomach.ā€
ā€œIā€™ll try, but I canā€™t make any promises!ā€
And after stuffing yourself full of Xianglingā€™s cooking, it felt like a happy mistake in the end.
- - - - -
The party was going well so far; after the performance and initial serving of food, it was nice to see everyone mingling together and having fun. You scanned the area, taking in the groups that the characters formed amongst themselves, before refocusing your attention back on what you were doing: being busy at the ā€œWinter Weather Deviceā€ Cloud Retainer built for the occasion.
And snow was actually a lot more pleasant when you werenā€™t buried under a heavy blanket of it.
ā€œShenhe, if I ever get into a snowball fight, Iā€™m recruiting you to my team.ā€
The woman stared at you, seriously. ā€œI would slay all your foes if need be, Your Grace.ā€
ā€œAhaā€¦ snowball fights arenā€™t that serious, but thanks.ā€
You continued to pat down the snow you held into a snowball, the cold flakes a higher-quality than what nature ever made. The water used to make them apparently came from the adepti abodes, which, of course, was why the snow was so soft and powdery, like from a fairytale.
ā€œIā€™mā€¦ā€ Yanfei stood by you, also crafting a snowball in her hands ā€” which shook slightly from the cold steeping into her fingers ā€” at your insistence. ā€œ...not sure I see the appeal in this.ā€
ā€œThe appeal is the glory of victory over your foes.ā€
ā€œ...right.ā€
Yanfei left the snowball she had made in the growing pile by your feet. You watched the younger partygoers play in the snow, stomping around and making vaguely snowman-like structures out of the cold flakes, before you felt someone approach you from behind, and turned to face them.
ā€œYelan! Hey! I didnā€™t notice you were here, are you having fun?ā€
Yelan let out a soft exhale, the warm light of the nearby stone lanterns illuminating her face from below as she faintly smiled. ā€œItā€™s hard not to have a good time when youā€™re around, Your Grace.ā€
ā€œDā€™aw, youā€™re just flattering me. I know how you work.ā€
You snorted as Yelan chuckled at your comment, before a thought struck you.
ā€œOh! I just realized I havenā€™t seen you around for a while! Whereā€™ve you been this entire time?ā€
ā€œPlaces.ā€
ā€œDoing what?ā€
ā€œThings.ā€
You stared at Yelan for a few seconds, her gaze amused as she stared back.
ā€œ...okay, then. Keep your secrets.ā€
You played with the snowball in your hands, rolling it back and forth between your palms as you briefly pondered all of the mysterious ā€” and probably legally-dubious ā€” things Yelan must have been up to this past week and a half, before you were snapped out of your thoughts by the sight of a wrapped box being held in front of your face. The hand holding it was Yelanā€™s, the shiny bow adorning the tiny rectangular container bending in the gentle evening breeze that was blowing by.
The box was pushed into one of your hands, the snowball now held in the other.
ā€œHere. For you. I hear giving gifts is a custom for this little holiday weā€™re celebrating, hm?ā€
ā€œWhereā€™d you hear aboutā€¦ no, wait, never mind. Iā€™m not gonna get an answer, am I?ā€
ā€œYou know me too well, Your Grace.ā€ Yelan chuckled again, her eyes narrowing ever so slightly as she smiled at you. ā€œIf you were anyone else, thatā€™d be a problem. But if itā€™s you, itā€™s just fine.ā€
You had never felt so lucky to be yourself as you did right now.
ā€œI suppose Iā€™ll let you rejoin the rest of the party now. Everyone worked so very hard to put this whole thing together just for you, I shouldnā€™t keep you from rewarding them with your attention.ā€
Yelan turned away from you, glancing over her shoulder as she walked away.
ā€œIā€™ll be watching. May we meet again soon, Your Grace.ā€
- - - - -
Despite all of the fun you were having, the party sadly couldnā€™t go on forever.
The daylight soon blended into night, and with it, the guests started to take their leave. The first to go were the youngest of the characters ā€” Qiqi left with Baizhu and Changsheng, Yaoyao with Cloud Retainer, Madame Ping and most of the other adepti. Yaoyao had even started to doze off at that point, requiring her to be carried by Cloud Retainer. Shenhe also left with the latter group.
Then went the next youngest: Xingqiu, Chongyun, Xiangling, Hu Tao, Yun Jin, Gamingā€¦ before they left, you made sure to give both Guoba and Man Chai another extra tight hug for the road.
Those who had work the next day soon followed. Yanfei, Keqing, and Ganyu all gave you polite goodbyes as they left, and Yelan vanished into the dark as easily as she had appeared to you.
Beidou left after saying goodbye to you and Ningguang, who simply headed inside of the Jade Chamber after bidding you a good night. Kazhua left with the pirate caption, his farewell another one of his poems that you were unfortunately too tired to think of one of your own in response to.
The harbor seemed to glow below the Jade Chamber as the cityā€™s lanterns lit up in the absence of the sun. You fiddled with the gift from Yelan in your hands, still wrapped up and unopened.
ā€œYour Grace, would I be correct in saying the surprise party was a success?ā€
You brought your gaze back up from Liyue Harbor and turned to see Zhongli approaching to stand beside you, his arms politely folded behind his back and his eyes focused on your face.
You smiled, giving him a nod. ā€œOh, yeah! It was so much fun! And Iā€™m definitely going to figure out how to thank everyone for it, especially Yaoyao and Qiqi since they planned the whole thing!ā€
His lips turned up into a soft smile. ā€œIā€™m very pleased to hear you say that, Your Grace.ā€
Your gaze shifted from the man standing next to you to the roof of the Jade Chamber, and you waved at Xiao to come join you and Zhongli. The legendary boy-adeptus had kept his distance from most others during the party, opting to watch from the rooftops as an onlooker rather than an active participant in it, though you were just happy that he was near all the festive energy.
With a sudden burst of green and black wisps, Xiao was at your side.
You looked at the adeptus with an enthused smile. ā€œSoooā€¦ did you enjoy yourself, Xiao?ā€
ā€œ...as long as the party made you happy, then Iā€™m happy, Your Grace.ā€
You clutched a hand over your heart. ā€œXiaoā€¦ youā€™re too sweet.ā€
This felt like the perfect ending to a perfect celebration, and as you looked between the adeptus and the Archon, you only felt all warm and fuzzy ā€” it was almost too much for you. Almost.
ā€œHey, I donā€™t feel like sleeping just yet. Letā€™s go for a walk around the harbor together.ā€
ā€œWeā€™d be honored to, Your Grace.ā€

ok i got to the end (like 2-3 hours ago)! my initial impressions (lowkey highkey just a review at this point) are is that I liked it and Iā€™d definitely watch it again. I can definitely see potential for being a yearly hanukkah rewatch.
itā€™s not for the faint at heart by any stretch of the imagination (lots of sex, nudity, gore, and reprehensible people being reprehensible to each other); itā€™s still very clearly a send up to exploitation cinema, even if it is trying to be a little loftier with its themes. but if youā€™re a fan of schlocky, grimy, low-budget, indie splatter/grindhouse slashers, itā€™s definitely worth a watch.
it wears its 80s horror influences on its sleeve, and pays some pretty direct homage (most notably to my eye, to john carpenterā€™s halloween; thereā€™s one shot in particular that was so deliberately referential to Michael Myers stalking the streets of Haddonfield, I wouldnā€™t be surprised if they shot it in the same location; thereā€™s also a rabbi who shows up in the last half of the film who plays a very Loomis-like role) almost to the point of pastiche. at the same time, it borrows widely enough & inserts enough of its own unique spin to avoid feeling at all derivative.
the plot & characters were fun, and made great use of the premise. some of the cinematography was actually impressive. the soundtrack couldā€™ve used more klezmer-infused metal, but thatā€™s a stylistic preference lol.
a lot of the dialog, acting & delivery wasnā€™t great, and there was sometimes just a little too much time to breathe between lines that made it feel a little stilted, especially in the first half. it starts way slower than it had to, but it does eventually find its rhythm.
nearly everyone in the movie (aside from a small handful of characters) is itā€™s always sunny in philadelphia levels of terrible, but further down the drama end of the spectrum than comedy. nevertheless, there are moments that are played for comedy.
one of the concerns i had going in was how it would handle its portrayal of jews & judaism, especially given how unkind to jews & jewish culture horror can be, and the fact that the writer is not himself jewish. it was something where I was prepared to just enjoy laughing about it anyways, with how inherently campy the concept of a ā€œhanukillerā€ is. but no it was actually pretty good. not perfect, but good.
thereā€™s a refreshing specificity to the characters I enjoyed. jews are allowed to be a world unto ourselves, and the fact that the movie revolves around such terrible people at no point feels like saying ā€œjews are like xā€. judaism and the role of a rabbi are affirmed as loving & life-giving, and the hanukiller is fully framed as an exceptional extremist, not representative of any real form of judaism, & not just in a buffalo bill ā€œoh btw heā€™s not actually transā€ throwaway line way.
for every jewish symbol & ritual object that the hanukiller twists, the legitimate version is shown repeatedly in a peaceful, loving context. plenty of dreidels, kippahs, magen davids, and kosher menorahs to go around (out of dozens of menorahs, there is one electric temple menorah with the lights at three different heights in the shul, which is weird bc it looks like it was filmed in an actual synagogue & Iā€™m pretty sure thatā€™s not a kosher temple menorah). I totally understand if seeing stuff like a bone menorah (the true horror is the candles not being at their proper heights) or the star of david carved into peopleā€™s chests or scrawled in entrails at all is a ā€œnopeā€, but it is explicitly framed as an extremely heretical perversion of judaism, and called out as suchā€”ā€œthis is not judaismā€ā€”and the star of david is shown in proper contexts.
the film definitely could have shown at least one other jew in a shtreimel to keep from associating the hasidic style of dress with violence. i could easily see the juxtaposition of the visibly ultra-frum hanukillerā€™s violence against less/non observant jews in less/invisibly jewish dress sending the wrong message. however, the aforementioned loomis-like character does still dress in plain orthodox style & is presented as a foil to the killer, being from the same synagogue, and thereā€™s enough counterbalance to the potential ā€œtradition = scary & violentā€ takeaway elsewhere in the narrative that it feels like the script is still pushing back against that conclusion.
perhaps surprising for the inherent irreverence of making a jewish slasher revolving around a jewish holy day at all, thereā€™s a clear love & respect for jews & jewish culture here. though not himself jewish, the writerā€™s familiarity & adjacency shines through & manages to dodge flattening Jews down to either antisemitic or philosemitic caricature.
all-in-all, itā€™s a good bit of the ā€˜ol ultraviolence: hanukkah edition. if youā€™re just looking for schlocky, gory fun for hanukkah, itā€™s the kind of movie that you can just turn your brain off and enjoy that way. but the themes are there and deep enough to still have something interesting to say. there need to be more of both jewish horror AND hanukkah movies, and this is not a bad entry to add to either of those lists.
watching Hanukkah (2019)ā€”the Hanukkah horror/slasher movieā€”here we go lol

i do not want to dig a hole but i am too much of a laura bailey pc enjoyer to not make this post so:
selfishness ā‰  a lack of kindnessĀ
selfishness is a theme that has come up with all of laura's main campaign pcs. that doesn't mean that her characters are always making selfish choices or that they don't care about the rest of the people they're with or that they're not good. it's just that, for the most part, the first thing they're thinking of when they take action or make choices is themselves.Ā
in jester and vex both it is more typical and obvious selfishness. vex's developed because she needed it to keep herself and vax alive and as safe as possible and it grew into a behaviour that she had to actively work to avoid. it's evident in her greed, her theft of the broom, her reaction to her own death which relied heavily on i'm okay/i survived to which keyleth reminded her that she wasn't the only one who had to witness and reckon with her death. in jester's case, she grew up in an environment that literally trained her to make every decision based on two things - her mother's opinion and her own. so, when she's out in the world without marion for the first time, her choices are those that will benefit her and her actions are those that consider her own thoughts and not really many others' (aside from the traveler's).Ā
it isn't a criticism of either vex or jester to say that they are characters who act selfishly. in fact, i'd argue that to claim otherwise does a great disservice to exactly how immense both of their character arcs are. because the nuance of both jester and vex is that they are selfish, and they also hold extreme room for self-sacrifice and empathy. vex is much more brash than jester is, and jester is much more trusting than vex, but both of them are characters who begin with selfish impulses who grow with them. neither ever truly shed those impulses, but they use them in new ways, typically transforming them into impulses towards things that are in the best interest of the party.Ā
you may have noticed the lack of imogen in this post about laura bailey pcs and that's because of two reasons. one, we are an unknown amount of time into her story, i can't analyse her development the same way i can vex and jester's. two, imogen's selfishness isn't the blatant quasi-self-aware selfishness that we see in things like jester complaining about her lack of money to caleb or vex stealing a broom. instead, imogen's is very internal, like a lot of laura's character work with imogen. it is a bit similar to jesterā€™s in the sense that it comes from a lack of awareness moreso than vexā€™s practiced behaviour, but imogenā€™s is a lot more tied to inherent beliefs she has about the world and the people in it.
as a consequence of her powers, imogen sees people's thoughts as their entirety, she holds it above their actions to be the truth of who they are - to act against what they think or to say something that doesnā€™t cohere with what theyā€™ve thought is akin to lying, so for her to act empathetically is to act in tandem with what someone elseā€™s thoughts are, not how they act, which is typically not all that wanted. the same as vexā€™s greed and jesterā€™s naivety, this is a trait that makes narrative sense and itā€™s one i find quite compelling, especially when read in the vein of someone struggling through trauma that has made them assume that the world is against them. imogenā€™s cynicism is coherent cynicism, i canā€™t say that in a similar situation i wouldnā€™t have the same predisposition towards the world.
the part that is particularly self-interested comes in if you look at how imogen has actually been treated in the campaign (quite well) in comparison to the cynicism that sheā€™s developed from her past (something that speaks to a world out to get her). certainly, a bunch of shitty things have happened to imogen in the time weā€™ve known her, but the same can be said for everyone in bellā€™s hells and pretty much everyone in exandria at this point in time. but, in a fight to save the aforementioned world, imogenā€™s focus was getting her mother back on her side. which, while very consistent with her character and a choice that i enjoy, is a very selfish one. the fun thing (to me, obviously) about imogen is that she has, more than most, an insight into the opinions of others and she also tends to seek othersā€™ opinions out and genuinely engages with them and supports their choices. but she still very much acts towards what she thinks is best. itā€™s one reason i enjoy looking at the dynamic between her and orym as one between foils, as orym tends to be stalwart in his beliefs and doesnā€™t care too much for otherā€™s opinions if heā€™s already sure of his own, but his actions tend to favour collaboration and protecting others.
as i mentioned earlier, imogen is a harder case to look at because she is still in the process of her story. however, the circlet is clearly influencing how she interacts with the world and in the wake of the solstice, the hostile reaction towards ruidusborn people has started to become more and more apparent and iā€™m interested to see what route that ends up leading imogen down and how it will influence her relationship with the rest of bellā€™s hells. (for better, i think, based on recent conversations, but if it's for worse i will be just as seated and excited).
all of this is just to say, please stop assuming that claiming a character has a trait you think is a bad one is criticism or a hate post. in light of the fact that i know that people who donā€™t believe this will continue to not believe this, iā€™ll encourage anyone confused about the ability of a character to be good and kind and selfish all at once to look to what the text itself says, specifically scanlanā€™s words to pelor when asked what vex means to him:
ā€œHer name is Vex, and she is greedy and mean sometimes, and she can steal a lot. Sheā€™s a little bit not the greatest person, but her flaws highlight everything that is right about her, which is she does all these things to protect her friends and her family. She would give her life for any of us and for anyone who was truly in need. And sheā€™s not perfect but sheā€™s the most perfect of all of us.ā€
would you look at that... an ability to be a multitude of things, some in conflict with one another. i know that's hard for fandoms to believe, especially about female characters with agency, but i promise its true!
