hi friends i haven’t been posting much art on here, i have still been in a ton of pain and it’s looking likely its an autoimmune arthritis of the spine and pelvis called ankylosing spondylitis which is good and bad news of course, it means if i can get on the right meds i can get my pain down. bad news is i have anky LOSING spondy loser spine of pain

here in the US it takes a very long time to get a proper diagnosis and it has taken 5 months of severe pain to get to this point.

unfortunately i need to be reach out for mutual aid from our community as this has put me out of work for almost half a year and we are struggling. my partner brian is also sick and unable to work and while we are doing all we can to get support it just isnt enough to keep us afloat until one of us can get better enough to work. danny is also looking for work so if anyone wants to hire an amazing animator hit him up!!

Bonjour! I'm a big fan and your art inspires me so much. I'm currently learning French to communicate with my friends, do you happen to have any tips on learning another language? I'd love some advice. ^_^

About your question I don't really have unique advice on learning another language, I guess you're asking me because I happen to be French? ^^

I'd say find lessons to learn the basics first, and maybe use an app or something to learn vocabulary (I did that for Japanese a few years ago and quiz apps make things a lot easier and fun! I'm still a beginner though, I don't have enough time but I'd love to start again). There's an app called Anki that lets you create your own quiz cards to test yourself with, or you can download pre-made decks (search for "Anki French decks" and you'll find what you need). I've used Anki a lot for studying, I love it!

Once you're comfortable enough start having basic conversations with your friends, and you can also try watching the French version of a movie you know well (or I don't know... try playing a LoZ game in French for example haha). If you already know the dialogues it can help! Maybe you can also listen to French youtubers that share your interests? I'm sure you'll find lessons from native speakers on Youtube too :)

And then of course consume French media, read in French, listen to French music... That's how I learnt English for the most part, I didn't really try (and the language classes we get in French school are really unhelpful). But I guess it's much easier with English cause it's everywhere and very much needed to get involved in fandom stuff online.

(Also be careful about comments from French users on social networks, sadly a lot of us make a lot of spelling or grammar mistakes so don't trust everything you read... I don't see the same thing happening in the same proportions with English speakers, I guess French is hard for natives too).

And lastly, we're always pleased and impressed when a foreigner bothers to learn our language, even if it's just a few sentences, and you don't need to speak flawlessly to be understood! French can be hard but don't put too much pressure on yourself ^^

Hiii, I've been following your blog since some time. And I've been very fascinated and impressed by your journey. I'm sure at this point you know hindi better than me (I'm not proud of this, I'll focus better on Hindi from now). And I've always had this question, I'm not sure if I asked you or if you have already answered it or not. But how did you start learning Hindi? Are you Indian or indian origin? And how has your journey been? Did you find difficulties? What was easy for you and what did you like/dislike about the culture as you continued learning the language? I'm very curious.

Here's my previous answer to how I got into Hindi in the first place.

In short, I am just a Finnish linguaphile with no connection to India or South Asia whatsoever. I have loved learning about different languages since childhood but Hindi (and Urdu on the side) has been my passion for the past six to seven years now.

I got into the language very typically through Hindi cinema but more than just the aesthetics I'm fascinated by the history, art, socio-political fabric, nature and just all of it. I love learning new things in general and there's always something new about Indian people or culture that draws my interest. Looking at things - whether political, religious or whatever - from a distance, I try to observe and form an understanding more than form opinions - it's not my place and all I have is endless respect for Indian people. I've never been to India but believe me I have long to-do and to-see lists when I eventually one day get to go there.

My language journey has been very enjoyable. I've done some online courses, had iTalki tutors, done some videos to practice pronunciation, made a huge Anki deck and done lots of reading, podcast listening and film watching. I was making great progress but my learning has been on somewhat hiatus since last autumn when I got a new job that took all my energy. Since January I've been writing a PhD thesis proposal that has taken all my spare time and my Hindi learning has diminished to scrolling Tumblr poems and listening to film songs while commuting. The passion is still there and I intend to return to my routines as soon as possible.

What I love most about Hindi as a language is the logic of it. It's - for me at least - very easy to 'get' Hindi, as in understanding the grammar rules - why things are the way they are. Hindi is a very learner-friendly language that way. A bigger issue is the immense vocabulary and understanding of the historical and cultural roots around borrowing sounds and words from Sanskrit, Persian and other languages - how they play together and how they do not etc. When learning Hindi you are never just learning Hindi!

I had some trouble learning Devanagari at first and learning to differentiate all the sounds (and produce them from my mouth). It took time, but one day they clicked. I'm not perfect and there's a lot of room for improvement but seeing the progress I've made is very encouraging and helps me keep on learning. Learning Nastaliq and Naskh is another story - and another journey altogether!

名探偵コナン 第100話 !!

I watched 名探偵コナン episode 100 today!! :D

I still need to put in much more work into my listening comprehension and vocabulary but for now, this is a nice milestone. In this post I want to share my experiences.

What I did

I not only watched these episodes, I also worked my way through the subtitles. I changed my approach over time but it looked basically like this:

reading subtitles and looking up words (on my computer)

putting words and phrases into Anki for later review (details below)

watching the episode (via BluRay)

(repeat process with the next episode)

Unfortunately, I wasn't very consistent. Most of the time I didn’t manage to finish the whole process for one episode per day (I'm working full-time). Sometimes I watched several episodes a day (before reading the subtitles) and sometimes I didn't watched any episode for a few days or even weeks.

I wanted to be more consistent but working through one episode took more time than I thought. Plus, on some days I just wanted to do something different like reading a novel or manga or listening to a podcast in Japanese. “All Conan all the time��� would have been more beneficial for my listening comprehension (for this series) but I needed the variety.

Difficulty

Many Japanese learners recommend to start with slice of life anime to train your listening comprehension and I agree. But since I don’t really like slice of life and because I love 名探偵コナン I watch it despite the fact that my listening comprehension and vocabulary is not strong enough yet. So this choice obviously comes more from the heart than the brain. XD

I’ve read somewhere that after around 20 or 30 episodes, understanding a series becomes easier because at this point one is quite familiar with the regular vocabulary. With 名探偵コナン my experience is “a bit different“. (If it was easier for you, please tell me your secrets :D)

Even after 100 episodes it feels by no means easy. I understand some parts but most of the time I still struggle and miss a lot (even though I understood the subtitles). However, I also learned a lot along the way. Some episodes were less complex than others and I was able to understand most of what the characters said. This gave me hope that over time I will understand more and more of the complex episodes, too.

(There are several reasons but) one reason why this series is challenging is the wide range of topics: business/economy, crime/police, finance/money, law, medicine, traffic, chemistry, art, cinema/ TV, sport, music, botany/plants, and maybe even some more I don’t remember right now.

To comfortably watch this series you not only need to know the crime-related and daily-life vocabulary, but also a ton of words from other areas as well.

The topic changes with every case, which makes every case a new challenge. This means, learning words from this episode doesn’t necessarily prepare you that much for the next. (I mean, not as much as by watching a series with only a few central topics.)

When I started I expected that it will become easier after 50 or 60 episodes. It was interesting to see that even after working through so many episodes I still come across quite a lot new words (depending on the topic). For example: In episode 97 I looked up 37 new words and phrases.

Let's see if it gets better after another 100 episodes. :D

Review

I gave Anki (flashcard program) another chance and it works quite well so far. Over the course of 100 episodes, I collected 546 words and phrases in my deck. These were my criteria:

word/phrase came up at least 3 times in more than one episode or case

the sentence gives me enough context

word/phrase I know in writing but not (fast enough) when listening

Reviewing these words helps me to not only recognize more words in general but also understand them fast enough while listening.

So…

… even after 100 episodes I’m still far away from understanding 名探偵コナン comfortably. Partly because I wasn’t as consistent as I wanted to be and because I didn’t listen more often to each episode. But also because this series is very challenging language-wise, so I think it’s only natural that it takes much more time. But it's not as bad as it sounds! I love that there is so much to learn. Every episode is a new challenge and a new chance to grow.

On to the next 100 episodes!

04/30 days of New Year Momentum Challenge 🐎 [14 / 02 / 24]

I'm reading the Silmarillon both for myself (it's only the second time, but the first time I had read it really fast to be able to fill a plotholes in my fanfic) and for the challenge. I love the way Tolkien fill his universe and made a whole world creation lore, but ohmycat is it not a fun things to read back to back. One chapter a day make it manageable, at the least.

Blackwater is a fun reading I have on the side, I don't read it fast because I read a lot of fanfiction on the side, but I love the way things move fast and we can follow how the town evolve. There's so much racism at time that make it hard to not stop to read at time, thought.

Hello people of Tumblr! I'm Alex, an aspiring artist, and I got a vision. My vision is Anki, an RPG game that takes place in a high-tech 4000BC! Witness the great metropolae of the Sumerian Empire through the eyes of a spacey young lad - Anki, child of prophecy. Watch him topple the constructs of God-Emperor Alulim, who made a life and death pact with an ancient deity born from the ashes of a long forgotten civilization, lying deep at the bottom of the Atlantic...

Anki will be heavily inspired by 90s anime series and movies like Neon Genesis Evangelion/The End of Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments: Lain, Patlabor 2, Ghost in the Shell; and by modern indie RPGs like Undertale, Deltarune, Omori (my faves)!

(other influences include the The Legend of Zelda franchise, Chrono Trigger, and many others)

Anki is a love letter to everything 90s, taking from 90s cinematography, art, animation, video games, music, and pop culture.

I've already written down most of the story, written most of the music, and done concept art by myself, but I request help.

If the ideas and concepts behind this game intrigue you, feel free to ask for more info about it! I am looking for a group of artists and devs to collab with in making this game (and be friends with :D)

If progress is made on the game, I'll be updating it here. Don't get too excited, though, as I am a student and will eventually postpone certain updates due to school work.

does anyone have a healthy relationship with making art?・part 1

and if so, what does yours look like?

art is one special interest of mine... among a dozen or so. and most of them i engage with to various unhealthy degrees.

for example, my japanese self-study looked like this for a while: several hours a day per week, including all-nighters poring over my own translations and grammar resources and doing anki speedruns. i'd asked my friends for a 7-month-long time out and took a vow of silence unless it was in japanese. i said that i'd surrendered to the language at the time, and i meant it. while i don't regret it, exactly, i seem to be constitutionally incapable of pacing myself over things i love, and i can flame out pretty easily.

every piece of art i have finished over the last year? has involved at least five all-nighter sessions. multiple forgotten meals. dangerously sore wrists. migraines from eyestrain and dehydration. body aches.

an idea seizes me by the throat. i begin the process of making it real... and cannot stop. at all. it will colonize my brain, robbing enjoyment and headspace from other important things that need doing until i can call it done. i've literally put off buying food because that feels like a chore and i could be drawing. housekeeping gets done in something like resentment, if at all. and then i can't bring myself to art again for months. because this shit is exhausting and because i actually can't ignore the rest of my life without guilt or terrible consequences. it's why i'm not as prolific as i would like to be.

after a lifetime of semi-confidence in my lineart, i only started learning how to paint less than a year ago. i am aware, painfully aware, of how much i still have to learn, but i can look at things i've finished and see more than 'mistakes' or 'flaws' now.

coloring can still take me forever, because it involves a lot of decision-making and feeling things out and tweaking until things feel right to me. sometimes they never do. i shelve work in the hope that i'll feel differently about it at some point.

i actually like the work i've made public. i'm proud of it. i hate that i felt like i had to turn into a machine to produce it.

though i know i'm not alone (thanks, duchess celestia) i feel naked and a bit ashamed mentioning any of this. i can hear the negative self-judgment coming a mile off and it's really easy for my brain to paste strangers' heads onto that critical voice i hear.

i don't know how not to be like this. i want to build a better relationship with creation so i can make more art.

The name's Kalingga Narendra—feel free to call me Lingga, or honestly, any nickname you'd like to come up with. (I love new pet names.) He/They are the only pronouns I recognize for myself.
