Werebelushi's Reaction: to Stupid Old Troll Comments

'Suggest that a werewolf version of John Candy is a stupid fursona to have.' You know, pointing out that something that is supposed to be stupid is a stupid concept to have for a character is a stupid idea to do. Have none of your guys ever heard of Poe's Law?

'Suggest that a werewolf version of Jim Carrey as the Grinch is a stupid fursona to have'. Reusing the same method and joke over and over just to hammer in the point that you think it's stupid is a stupid idea to have. So…this is the gimmick? You are going to just repeat the very first one over and over again? That doesn't sound terribly original to me, that just seems like the method that bad parody movies like 'isn't this joke originally and clever? Look it's Thor only he's overweight and he farts a lot, we're going to have Thor doing the same fart gag over and over until you think it's funny' or 'Well we're going to have Wolverine give the middle finger to someone with his claws, because there's no way that has ever been done in the X Men movies, we're going to have do that because that is original and clever.' The humor of the Daloli-verse is very much the online equivalent of Seltzerberg's spoof movies. Look guys, as a comedian myself I can relate to how awfully difficult it must be to think of new material, there are nights where I cannot think of a joke or even a good topic to rant about, but you know…I practice and practice, and so should you. Maybe try branching out a little, try a different joke. Because clearly re-doing the same joke only switching out the subject isn't funny.

'Make fun of his werecreature fursonas over and over'…yes, that's all you have been doing and it's not original or funny, like when that stupid idiot though it was a clever idea to put celebrity heads on fat people's bodies to try and parody said characters, okay…why just use a fat person over and over? Oh look, the bad Daloliverse expy of me has red hair that clearly does NOT match the rest of their hairline, obviously they just put me and Andria into a blender and thought…'give this John Belushi expy a red wig and act like he/she/ is supposed to be Andria', and also how is giving your Megamind expy hairy hands and thick eyebrows supposed to represent those OCs? Yes, Nathan likes Megamind. Is turning your Megamind expy into Jack Nicholson in Wolf supposed to be referencing something? Is giving your obvious Christine knockoff cartoon eyes and angry eyebrows supposed to be referencing something? I don't see the humor. You just reuse the same 'make fun of his OCs' schtick over and over and it's never different apart from the character, it's repetitive and unoriginal. 'Ooh look, it's Pinnochio and the long nose he gets when he lies is being used to simulate an erection! That joke hasn't been done before, right?' 'Oh look, it's that meme guy that sings Chocolate Rain and he is singing a seduction song.' So..what's the joke? What is the damn joke. Is the joke is that he is singing a sexy song in the same style as Chocolate Rain? You know Key and Peele's bit about Ray Parker Jr was funny because it was about how Ray Parker Jr is known for one song yet all the songs he sings in the skit sound exactly like Ghostbusters, I mean if the joke you're trying to make is that 'Oh Tay Zonday made Chocolate Rain but what if he tried to do different song styles but the song sounded a bit like Chocolate Rain each time?' then yeah i'd buy it. I mean if you did a parody of nature gone wrong movies and then put in Godzilla for no reason other than…'Well Jurassic Park has scaly creatures in it, Godzilla is a giant scaly monster, so the joke writes itself', i'd be questioning you. I mean Godzilla is not what I think of it when it comes to movies about mutant/killer animals. If this was supposed to be a Jurassic Park parody you also missed the mark because Godzilla is not a dinosaur. You can't just claim your fake werecreatures are supposed to do anything other than mock Nathan for his OCs when half of them are unoriginal.

'Call him out on his Elvira obsession and call him a cougar chaser.' Hey, you leave the mistress of the dark out of this, jokes on you, Nathan's bisexual. And also jokes on you again because Elvira's actress came out as bi. Also…Nathan likes gothic women, got a problem with that?ar the stupidest idea to have. Repetition can be good, yes but the way you do is annoying and we know what the punchline is going to be so either get better material or stop being so unoriginal. I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy's friend who knows how to get you a more original set of dialogue and more original putdowns, you'll need him.

'Remind him that John Candy died of a heart attack at age 43, and that he doesn't have much time left!' I wasn't born yesterday you know, we know John Candy died of a heart attack, why are you mocking Nathan for being a fan of one of the nicest actors ever? Is it because you never had a childhood or a sense of humor? Honestly anyone who doesn't like John is heartless to me. We know he passed away in 1994, it was very sad. Any other celebrity deaths that happened you want to point out? It's not like Nathan was born in a cave, you know. Look Nathan really wanted to see one of Michael Jackson's concerts when he was alive but that never came to fruition.

'Remind him that Jim Carrey is a talentless hack, and that the live action Grinch movie sucked.' You have to be joking me, the daloliverse which is where you're from has some of the suckiest movies ever made, I had the misfortune of seeing all of them in the theater, 'Werenude' featured no werecreatures at all, just the same overweight model that they keep forcing into their productions and objectifying and fat-shaming her and I felt bad for the actress. Don't get me started on the bad ripoffs of me and the werejohncandy characters, that looked nothing like me or Chumsley. They couldn't even get someone of my body type and gender to play the character, they just cast that overweight model to play both characters, and for pete's sake they don't even bother to change her hairstyle, she has the same hair-style as both characters except she's wearing a red wig to look like Andria (one of Mel's friends). I have seen productions from Full Moon and Troma that put more effort into it than these movies, heck Monsturd and Thankskilling are better than this. I am sorry but the Daloli-verse tv show was terrible…none of the characters were likable and it was a bad ripoff of SNL only it was a bad parody of internet lolcow culture and not even the skits that were even that terrible were funny, all of the jokes were just mocking autistic people, furries and bronies. And don't get me started on the movie, the movie was awful, i'm sorry but I didn't like the movie that was basically Movie 43 but worse, and what makes the movie worse that a movie that is supposed to be mocking internet universe culture seems like it's a Seltzerberg movie wannabe with outdated meme references (this movie came out in 2010 yet there are references to memes from the early 2000's?), I hated the show and the movies. I tried watching some of them with Bonzi, and Bonzi said he tried watching them while under alcoholic influence, stoned, and under jungle bath salts and he still didn't find it funny.

'Tell him Steve Martin is better than Jim Carrey'…DON'T do that, you do know that both comedians are good, right? Besides, someone who starred in such titles as 'Werenude' and the Daloliverse movies shouldn't be judging someone else's taste in comedy. Trust me, i'm glad the Daloli-verse movie won a Golden Raspberry award because you'd have to be moronic to find it funny.

'Say you like Were(insert another dead comedian)s better!' You know, I like OTHER satirical website realms better than the Daloliverse, heck I liked Cracked better than you. CollegeHumor is better than the Daloli-verse, even with the political stuff, still better than this crap. Heck, It's Pat is a better movie than the Daloli-verse movie, I would watch that than this. Uncyclopedia is better than you.

"Okay buckaroos. Listen up and let me tell you a thing."

The federal agent had the spiritual stench of somebody who knew their own self to be irredeemably unappealing, and was now straining against that knowledge to How Do You Do Fellow Kids, right in front of an auditorium of sleep-addled 18 to 28 year olds, many of whom did not even want to be there.

"Um. Ok. So, my name is Sivilizabrett. Shrett for short. And I'll be walking you through some crazy stuff today. Are we all hyped to be here at the Seminar for Planet Earth's Specialest Snowflakes!"

A small whoop echoed from the backseats. Elsewhere, the glow of phone screens illuminated faces resolutely trained on far more appealing things on social media.

"Alright, maybe we could've named it something else. But that's really what you all are! You've been chosen because you're special and we're going to make you even specialer!”

The screen behind Shrett turned on. A PowerPoint slideshow with cryptid fanart and severely unfunny vaporwave dadacore memes on the title slide appeared. The title text read "Make America Spooky Again".

"I bet you've wondered - since you discovered our existence that is - what exactly it is that we do with all this stuff we learn from the weird toasters and tentacled horrors. After all, that note-taking and archiving has gotta be for something right?“

Some faces looked up from their phones.

"Well, that something is this!" Shrett trilled, clicking a button on a remote. The slideshow flicked to a screen full of words the likes of which people had only seen in science fiction. Space-time compression. Long-distance healing. Telekinesis. Remote viewing.

Mind control.

Shrett couldn't resist prancing around on the stage a little, making sure to show everyone how nice and shiny their hair was. It felt a little bit like watching a showhorse. Except nobody was paying much attention to the mane.

"Um... Does that text there really say 'mind control'," said a Dominican Republic diaspora black woman from the second row. "Like. Actual mind control."

Shrett whizzed around to stare at her, barely managing a smize that concealed the triple K tier racism swelling in their Crackerian veins at the sight of this untermensch that the Department was going to use like a farm animal anyway.

"Yes sistah! Sorry, please feel free to tell me how you'd like to be addressed. I am aware of my white privilege and I'm listening and learning." Shrett stretched the smize a little tighter. "Anyway - yes! That does in fact say mind control. It's a scary phrase! I totally understand that everyone's freaked out. But it's not gonna be like in the movies or video games!”

The slideshow clicked forward again.

"It's going to be more like this!”

In the cold dark of the auditorium, a little rectangle of a video glowed, displaying a gritty low-res preview of a small Indonesian person crouching on a plastic stool. They appeared to be in the middle of a bath that they were taking with water they scooped from a large plastic bucket.

Shrett hit play.

The person continued bathing. It went on like this for awhile, just a normal person doing a normal person thing. And then, just as coolly and languidly as one would pick a little roadside flower to put in one's hair, the person got up, towelled themself off, then headed to the kitchen of their little wooden house. Grabbed a knife. Went to the living area where their mother and sister were watching afternoon TV together. Slashed their mother's throat. Watched their sister scream silently, then loudly, then scramble away on the floor, knocking hot tea everywhere. Slashed her throat too, but not as deeply. Tore off her underwear, raped her as she choked to death on her own blood.

After the murderer was done, they sat on the floor, watched TV for a bit. And then, slowly, something crept into their body and face. As if a part of them was returning. They looked around frantically at the scene as if they'd just awakened right into a nightmare, and started screaming too.

Shrett clapped their beautiful lily white Aryan hands together to signal the end of the video.

"Omg, so sorry, we really should have put a content warning for that. We care a lot about the feelings and traumas and marginalisation of survivors. Next time we'll do better, okay? Listening and learning."

Nobody in the audience made a sound. But everybody was paying attention, now.

"So that right there, that is just the tip of the iceberg of our capabilities. You see, the United States Department of Paranormal Phenomena, that's just our front-facing name okay! Just some icing and cherries for the cake. The cake itself though is called the United States Department of Multi-Reality Quantum Engineering and Modification. Doesn't roll off the tongue as easy!”

Some audience members were starting to look at each other, mouthing 'what the fuck' and other such expressions of horror. Feeling themself losing ground, Shrett picked up the pace a bit.

"So yeah, basically you can see that it's not like in the movies where a blue light shines out of the robot's eyes or they shudder violently and speak in suddenly ominous tones. It's like it's the same person still, but it's not! All their agency, their personality is briefly muted, so that we can kick in with our contraptions and take over!

That's why we sometimes call them robots, or fuckpigs. They're as good as. After all, everything that made them human was taken away."

It's generally difficult, for someone like Shrett to hide just how much sadistic megalomaniac hatred they harbor for almost every living thing on the planet. In this case, they might have let a bit too much of it slip. They smoothed their leather mommy dom skirt out a bit, searching inwardly for a way to soften the blow.

"With the technology we have developed, we can give you this power, and the best part is, you don't necessarily have to use it like this! You can use it to make people smile! You can use it to give them good luck, or good weather. Good dreams, even! You could be a GOD!”

Somebody in the audience had started to sob.

"You could be what America was always meant to be. A distant, loving keeper of the peace. A beacon! For the white western Christian kingdom. Millions turned into sweet little lambs of The Good Shepherd. The rest, well, discarded however you see fit-"

"You are FUCKED UP man. You and this whole fucking thing. FUCKED UP." A chubby young white guy in a Mortal Kombat t-shirt stood up from his seat, his face pale with fury. His shoulders were trembling. Around him and even further away, people nodded and murmured in agreement. Shrett threw them all a disdainful little smile.

"Okay. I see that not everybody is on board. Understandable! It's a lot to take in." They calmly walked to the center of the stage, until they were standing in the middle of where the video had stopped. The crying and screaming bloodied Indonesian, rocking back and forth between the corpses of their own family.

"I'm gonna have to remind you though. You are not being given a choice."

There was no sound, no movement anywhere however minute, to warn anybody of what happened after. The recruits only knew that, all of a sudden, the white guy who had spoken up started reeling. When his companion asked him if he was alright, he couldn't even answer in full sentences. It was as though he'd lost the ability to speak.

"Don't worry kittens. Your brave friend there is lucky. This effect is only temporary. He's going to be one of God's beautiful precious angels, after all. And we need those to be able to speak English. I mean, like. What kind of angel would that be otherwise." Shrett let out a little laugh. It met zero response in kind.

"You're not gonna let any of us go?" A small voice quivered from another row. This time, Shrett didn't even bother looking to see who it was. They simply slapped their hands on their thighs like they were addressing some errant preschoolers, and said:

"No."

You work for the United States Department of Paranormal Phenomena, where you deal with stuff ranging from a harmless talking toaster to world ending eldritch abominations. Today you have been tasked with giving an orientation class to the new recruits.

(From the post you just reblogged) One thing I want to tell you: You are geniunely making me want to go and watch the Invader Zim series. I knew I enjoyed it when I was a kid the few times I could catch it, even if the grotesque stuff threw me for a loop sometimes, but seeing how the fandom is still active and how there was a relatively recent movie for it makes me want to re-experience it now with grown eyes!

Honestly. Some people tell me that they don't even watch Invader Zim, but read Tech Support.

Tech Support is my HUGE BABY of a fanfic (sorry lofi I love it a little more) and is a complete re-telling of the series in an order that makes chronological sense, from Zim's Computer's perspective.

It is so much more than that, but I do find the research and rewriting and tweaking of trying to make Invader Zim a more serialized show instead of an episodic events show was super fun, and I'm hoping to get back into it when my free time opens up.

Honestly, I never got into Invader Zim until 2019 when Enter the Florpus came out. I saw a few of my old mutuals reblog excitement and news about an Invader Zim movie, and I realized I myself had never seen Invader Zim. So I gave it a chance.

And I hated it. Hahahahah

Well, okay, hated is a strong word. I just found it pretty formulaic for the first few episodes.

Like "Alien with anxiety comes across a normal human thing, misunderstands it in a horrible and grotesque way, hilarity and dark humor ensues"

And that was the formula for a good chunk of the start of season one. Even episodes like Dark Harvest didn't really grab me that the show was something special.

So......

When the Steven Universe Movie came out... I gave it a second chance.

Thank god I did, because then I saw "The Wettening" and that was the episode that made me stick with Invader Zim, and I could tell how amazing and expensive the animation was for the time, and how Grey the protagonist and antagonist were. Zim and Dib change roles on who the Protagonist or Antagonist is depending on the episode, and I could finally see how Dib was being utilized as a character, and that's the episode where the show really found it's footing and knew what it wanted to be. It was about the rivalry between the two boys. It was about petty Elementary schoolyard fights that dissolved into a massive global threatening scale... and that's when Invader Zim is at it's absolute strongest and when it shines the most.

The Wettening really saved the show for me and made me continue watching.

I'm so glad I did, because then I watched the Steven Universe Future Movie and Enter the Florpus as a double feature. (AN EXPERIENCE I DO NOT RECOMMEND. YOU WILL BE EMOTIONALLY DEVESTATED BY A FUNNY LITTLE SCREAMING ALIEN MAN MOVIE AND CRYING BY THE END WHEN YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO LAUGH)

I owe a lot to Invader Zim.

It's how I met a lot of lifelong friends on tumblr when my Naruto fandom friends were starting to move on and grow up. (we hardly get together in the group chat to just talk about funny memes and junk... It's all adult stuff like weddings and job hunting and bleh)

It also came at a time when I was processing a lot of feelings about the grief of the loss of my father. While it's been over six years since he passed away, and I don't miss him as much, working on the Post-Florpus AU helped me process a lot of feelings I felt about my father, parenthood, and seeing a show about a little green alien man in the world with no supportive parental figures, fighting a little boy with a stand-offish father who was trapped in his lab and hardly paid mind to his son...

Idk, it meant a lot to me when I was living alone in a studio appartment and shutting off all my emotions.

All my work about Invader Zim is deeply personal to me, and I want to see it finished to the end.

Anyways, I was kind of rambling all over the place, might of got deeply personal, but I do find it funny about how a show of a little screaming green man, can be so funny, yet so deeply personal to me, and helped me deal with processing death, at a time when I was pushing everyone away from me.

Funny how that works, and I don't even think the creator knows how deeply Invader Zim touches the hearts of the outcasts, abandoned and the grieving.

Cause the show is funny. Like there's an episode where they legit say "Pee Pee" over a thousand times.

But it's that kinda show.

I just love Invader Zim.

Hi... can I ask your top 10 favorite anime ever (can be series or movies)? And why do you like them (if you don't mind me asking)? Thanks....

I can do manga rather than anime because I don't watch a lot but:

1. Fullmetal Alchemist: I think it’s one of the best stories ever, best ending that I think any story within the genre should have. Also nostalgia, but I genuinely think it’s a series to look to when talking about quality manga series. I re-WATCH this one every year because this is one of the few series where the anime (Brotherhood) does it true justice.

2. Boku no Hero Academia (for now, depends on the ending): idk, too many reasons. The characters, their relationships, the darkness in the story but how that darkness is used to instill hope. Lots of things I love. My favorite character of all time is in this story so that gives it points.

3. D.Gray-Man: probably the most flawlessly written manga I’ve read. It’s not done yet and it’s moving agonizingly slow, but it is unlike anything else I’ve ever read. My second favorite character of all time is in this story, so again, points.

4. Fruits Basket: Nostalgia I think. I read it in middle school and it just made my 13 year old little heart feel things. I re-read it almost every year. It’s a great love story.

5. Ouran High School Host Club: Nostalgia again. Super simple, super dumb and ridiculous in a lot of ways, but one of the few love stories that gives me those butterflies from watching people find love lol. I re-read this one almost every year.

6. Attack on Titan: The only tragedy I'll ever recommend lol. Not a fan of stories like this, but it has nostalgia points (I started it in high school at a sleep over with the same friend who got me into BNHA ಠ_ಠ ) and it's honestly just, fantastically well written. It's unique also. The ending it has, the way everything plays out is just *chefs kisses*.

7. Naruto: Ugh. Basing this off of pure enjoyment. I read it last year and loved it instantly. It just drew me in. I love Naruto and Sasuke, Kakashi and Itachi and Obito. It has a lot of great stuff in it. It's *yikes* in some ways, and it's become very much meme material, but it's still a good story overall and I enjoyed it. It also made me legit cry. Twice.

8. K Project: Okay this fluctuates between anime and manga. It's weirdly organized but it works, somehow. I love it because it has a large cast and does them justice, has a lot of different storylines going all at once and they all come together and make one giant story that has so many different elements to it. One of my fav ships is in this story so bonus points. Also, nostalgia. This was def a high school experience for me lol.

9. Durarara!!: I'm still working my way through the manga but it's easily one of my favorites based off of what I have so far. Large cast, does them all justice. All the different storylines come together in the end. Izaya gives the story bonus points for just being in it.

10. Blue Exorcist: I'm not done and it's on hold for me right now but it's fantastic so far. One of the reasons I desperately need BNHA to end is so I can focus on BE lol. As for why, well, it's fun and light hearted but also has dark elements to it. The main relationship focus is two siblings, which for some reason just reels me in quickly and tugs at my heart. The story itself is just purely enjoyable and entertaining imo.

Okay so to be fair I’m only going to focus on events or things that have occurred on this blog. So other sweet wonderful heart touching things that have happened with other muses, don’t think I’m ignoring you. I’m not. Just this blog only.

So let’s talk about my counterpart.

Let’s level right now. Let’s be real.

Final Fantasy Unlimited is a forgotten member of the anime relics and it turned 20 years old last year. Barely anyone remembered because we were all celebrating FMA (and you know how much I love FMA) but my point being is, FF:U had an anniversary too but it’s so unknown it got left by the way side. While I do wish it would get a bit more love, I understand as the anime was cut half way through due to a cancelation so like the full plot got left in translated scripts we’ve had to go hunt down and read.

Like I get it, FF:U’s fandom has always been small and for a long time I thought it was just me and Cloudy back from when I ran Kumo’s other blog (I tragically lost the password for) So basically the point I’m making here is FF:U’s fandom has always been very small.

I track FF:U’s tag on my personal blog for the odd occurrence of something popping up in it and here comes badass art of Kaze. So now my attention is had and I go check the blog.

I swear to you my eyes went O.O and my brain goes “BLACK WIND!” and apparently on the other side of the world Quen is looking at my blog going “WHITE CLOUD!” Look I found Kumo’s other. I found his match. This was very exciting for me.

Of all the characters to write with for Kumo I had always wanted to write with Kaze because they’re just a matched set and after years of having a blog for him, here comes Quen dragging the Wimdy Boy with her. I re-made Kumo’s blog from the ground up starting in 2020 just so Kumo could finally have his other half, and last year he just got fucking loud and he’s been so alive and growing and just having my Cloudy boy so loud is so amazing for me.

FF:U is one of my “I feel depressed so I’ll rewatch this” shows. This whole blog has been an experience because I’ve found other people beyond me, Quen and Cloudy who like FF:U and I’ve got people to give it a shot and to see people love this thing I love. One of my “oh that’s too weird I won’t talk about it” loves. Kumo is that love. My weird muse no one knows but I still just adore. To have other people love him and to love him through my writing.

This whole blog is just a sweet experience to me and to see his audience grow, has little 15 year old me shyly pushing their fingers together while adult me is finally “see people do like that weird thing you adore.”

Ships! POV: You’re looking at a list with a mere 24% of m/f pairings. Neat. Yeah, okay, not a lot of ships up there I like. Ineffable Husbands drops to 26th from last year's 5th. Zelink rose a solid 48 places to hit 37, nice.

TV shows! AtLA remains in the top 10, Good Omens in 15, Eurovision 16, Doctor Who 17. Steven Universe still clinging on at 24. Korra at 59, His Dark Materials at 65.

In Movies, Lord of the Rings still up there at 6th! Interesting surge for Howl's Moving Castle up 19 places to 13, Princess Mononoke holding steady at 40, Kiki's Delivery Service at 47.

Oh Hellsite Gazing is a fun post. When you gaze into the hellsite, the hellsite gazes back at you...

Communities I've posted to - Simblr (up two places to 10), ActuallyAutistic (down one place to 11), okay I had a peak at Curators On Tumblr and there is not nearly enough museology, Jumblr drops 8 points to 28, note to self to check out Writers on Tumblr (which is apparently new to the list?), bookblr, and plantblr.

Interesting post for Things We Care About. This is good shit: "Changing the Taxonomy of Tumblr’s Trends — You rallied and asked for a clearer distinction between what’s trending on Tumblr and what’s always important. In the anime and manga list, Zombieland Saga doesn't place at all, what is wrong with you, Tumblr.

Books - disappointed but not surprised to see what came first. Sigh. The Locked Tomb series debuts in number 10. Interestingly, Lord of the Rings isn't there at all, I guess they grouped it all in with the movie placement? Silmarillion still comes in 11th. Animorphs rises five places to 36. No His Dark Materials, guess that was lumped in with TV too.

Aesthetics! Ones I vibe with: naturecore (7th), cyberpunk (9th), goblincore (13th), vaporwave (19th), cryptidcore (32nd), old web (37th), goth aesthetic (50th). IIRC the only -core I posted in was corvidcore, which does not appear. Pensive emoji.

Memes is just a fun list. Ever Given my 2nd-place beloved... Webweaving skyrocketed from 47th to 8th, neat. Inktober dropped ten places suck shit. Darker timeline debuts at 15th and makes everyone double-check usernames. Interesting, stimboard wasn't on the list last year, apparently. Cursed images drops 15 places to 35. Bingus debuts at 38, eeby deeby at 39, Neil banging out the tunes at 44. Writing problems at 45, I know those well. Josh Fight debuts at 47, and unfuckable at 48.

Finally, a post on Tumblr in the wild. Look I can only speak for myself but when I did leave Tumblr briefly I did actually follow some of those Insta accounts. I know. I know.

This is going to be fun!

1. The Production of Penny. SPOILERS for A Comet Pulled From Orbit.

For the first several weeks, it’s just impossible to meet her. Penny will feel bad about it later, but he can’t take in any new stimuli when his entire body, mind, soul is shivering in the exposed light, trying to adjust to a reality he’d given up on returning to. He holes himself up with his family in one of his favorite places, a small house in Alaska, of all places, that he’d only just acquired and made comfortable when he’d—when he’d gotten himself trapped somewhere else.

2. The Way a Fool Would Do

You never really know what you’re getting into, when you choose to take a soulmate. Before Quentin had bound himself to Eliot, he’d been forced to endure the normal barrage of questions from the Fillorian Soul Council, and then a separate barrage of questions from his cousin Julia, who had nitpicked his choice down to the marrow, pouring concern after concern into Quentin’s already terrified brain.

He’d been so frustrated with her at the time, but in retrospect he can’t blame her for her caution. The fact is, no matter how much you prepare, no matter how much you think you’ve thought it all through, binding another soul to your own is unlike anything else in the world. It is impossible to know how it will feel until it’s already too late to turn back.

3. The Genesis of Julia

She decides, while watching the 1984 Summer Olympics one lazy day, a magically cool glass of lemonade on the table beside her as she lounges back into their comfiest armchair, to master gymnastics. The decision is made more or less on a whim; this is how Julia decides how to spend a great deal of her infinite life minutes, truthfully. She’s organized and meticulous once she knows her goal, but when it comes to finding said goal, it’s all about what strikes her fancy.

4. The Construction of Kady

The dust took a couple of weeks to settle, after Kady’s abrupt departure from her old life and chaotic intrusion into her new one. She’d been in the middle of war with her own people when she’d died for the first time, and the others had found her desperately attempting to steal magic from a rival hedge group in order to survive, too anxious about her own life to properly mourn for her mother’s death, and certainly too caught up in her own frantic mind to trust any of these new people, much less believe them about their immortality, or her own.

5. The Origins of Alice

There was no way to prepare for something like this. There was simply nothing she could do, nothing she could write down, no refinements she could make, that would help her to be more ready for what the morning would bring.

Alice hated that very much, of course.

6. The Creation of Quentin

The object in question was beautifully rendered, detailed and precise. A burnished color, the cool weight of it reassuringly solid in Q’s hands as he examined it, turning it over and over in his hands. This one wasn’t even particularly old; it looked to be a sixteenth century model, and Q had seen older and more beautiful in his time.

7. The Making of Margo

When Margo first met Alice, she understood her immediately. That wasn’t to say that Alice was boring, or predictable, or that there was nothing Margo had to learn about her. It wasn’t that at all. It was more that in meeting Alice, Margo was able to take one look at her and think to herself: ah, now this I know what to do with.

8. The Explanation of Eliot

El was afraid of heights, but only a little.

He could fly, after all, and that should have made fear illogical. But if anything, his ability to subvert gravity was the very reason for his nerves: he’d never been able to trust himself with anything, much less his own life or the life of others. The few times his telekinetic powers had been called in as a means of escape or rescue, when he’d held an innocent stranger or beloved family member in his arms and floated with them down from the side of a mountain or building or cliff face… well, those were the things he had nightmares about, on the rare occasions when he could remember his dreams. It was that sensation of freefall, of knowing it was magic, something inexplicable, deep in his consciousness, in his soul, even, that was the only thing preventing sharp, painful, deadly impact. He knew himself well enough to know he should never be trusted with something so precious as the life of another.

9. A Comet Pulled From Orbit

Alice Quinn woke up.

This was an unexpected development, considering the events of mere moments ago. Specifically the agonizing thirty seconds she’d spent bleeding out on the carpet, wondering in an abstract sort of way how long it would be before someone thought to look for her and found her mangled corpse tucked into the corner of a Brakebills Library study room, surrounded by the shredded remains of several large magical tomes, and her carefully collated notes.

Pausing here for a moment after the first 9 - eight of them are all part of one series. The main story, A Comet Pulled From Orbit, is an Alice POV AU of The Old Guard. Prominent Queliot subplot, some burgeoning Kalice and other ships as well. Lots of found family, etc. The other stories, all the ones with the seven main characters' names in them, are meant to be a series of small snippets to fill out that universe, backwards and forwards. I'm noticing that I do a lot of setup, I don't often start in medias res with any of these, trying to set a tone and get the information started right away. Each of the chapters of the snippet stories could be their own thing, so it's a little weird to consider it the start of a bigger story!!

Okay, moving on to earlier stories.

10. is it too late (or could this love protect me)

This is a story about nothing and everything. It is a story between then and now. It is a story of people living their lives, living them, and living them, and continuing to live them, with only some pedestrian heartbreak and alcoholism and good old millennial economic angst to add some variety to the humdrum of continued existence.

This is a story about stupidity, and love. Stupid love.

(A/N - hmm I kinda hate this beginning now even though I'm SUPER proud of the story as a whole)

11. Maybe This Time

"Quentin Coldwater?" Eliot says, twisting the name up in his mouth like an insult.

Give him a break - it's a weird fucking name, for one thing. And besides, the off-putting demeanor is an intentional scare tactic.

12. Beyond the Veil

"Do you think the Lorians would want a seat at the table?" Fen asked doubtfully, looking over the charter in front of her.

"Well, they're going to want to review the language, at any rate," one of the advisers put in. "Especially the order of the names."

"But it's in alphabetical order!" Margo said. "Fillory comes before Loria - sorry, not sorry."

13. Running All This Time

Quentin was sweet. There were a lot of words that Eliot could think of to describe him, several of them a lot more besotted than he was comfortable with, but sweet was an apt descriptor, generally speaking.

He had the softest little smile, and wide brown eyes that crinkled up in the corners when he was happy. He had strong yet gentle hands, hands that were somehow mesmerizing as he flapped them around wildly during conversation, trying to paint pictures in the air to accompany his latest rant about whatever-the-fuck. His voice was calming, his circular logic compelling, enough so that Eliot found himself listening - really listening - whenever Quentin was talking to him, even if it was about the Plover books and what they suggested about this time period in Fillorian history, or the politics of trade when it came to buying labor from talking animals, or how he may have come up with a better tracking system to mark down the mosaic patterns they'd already tried. Dry, uninteresting stuff, really. Which is what Eliot told Quentin, with an eye-roll, to stop him from getting a big head.

14. To Feel the Same

Quentin finds Eliot sitting alone in the armory, surrounded by books.

Something tense and frantic inside of him unclenches, like it always does around this man. It’s actually a remarkable thing, because by all rights Eliot should make him more nervous, not less. Quentin is a nervous person, after all, and Eliot is so… Eliot . A High King in his blood. Quentin had meant that, when he said it, and had drank in the gratitude in Eliot’s eyes like a glass of pure, crisp water, essential and quenching.

15. Identity Theft

The first thing the man noticed as he came to consciousness was that his head was pounding. It felt like the worst hangover he'd ever had, times about a million, and for several seconds all he could do was lay there and gasp and wait for his eyes to adjust. He appeared to be in a semi-dark room of some sort. It was large, with a cavernous ceiling above him, and the air was drafty. Like a garage maybe, bigger even - a warehouse?

The second thing he noticed was that he wasn't alone in the room. There were shapes all around him, rustling and making confused, pained sounds. After a few moments of this, there was a whoosh of energy and an orb of light floated above his head, illuminating the space in a soft glow. Someone in the room had cast a simple light spell. He looked around and sat up slowly, trying not to jostle his still pounding head. His next observation was that pretty much everyone in the room with him was kind of stupidly attractive.

16. Promises

Quentin gets about thirty seconds alone in his bedroom in the cottage, before Eliot is bursting through the door without knocking. It's not that he wasn't expecting him to take it hard, but seriously - can he not give Quentin just a couple of minutes of peace?

"This isn't happening," Eliot says without preamble, slamming the door shut behind him. "I'm sorry, Q, but it's not."

"I honestly don't think it's your decision to make," Quentin says, running a tired hand over his face.

17. The Curse of the Broken Vase (aka The One Where They Get Married and Nothing Goes Wrong)

Quentin was pacing.

He was pacing, and he was tugging his hands through his hair, which he really shouldn't be doing because it had actually taken a hairdresser an annoying amount of time to brush it out and tie it back, and apparently it was perfect now, even though Quentin couldn't really see how it was different from his normal lazy bun, but whatever.

There would be people, Eliot included, who would be annoyed with him for messing up his hair.

18. Liquid Courage

Eliot was fidgeting. Which was unusual, and generally not a good sign. But it still wasn't much of a warning, Quentin had thought to himself later, given what was about to happen. Then again, Eliot had been acting strangely all week, a little distant and distracted, and Quentin had known his partner was working up to discuss something with him.

Quentin had been worried, of course, but in an abstract sort of way. He figured whatever it was, the two of them were more than equal to the challenge. Given everything they'd been through over the entire course of their relationship, he really couldn't imagine any piece of news that would be capable of obliterating their lives.

19. Reciprocal

The thing about Quentin Coldwater was that it was pretty much impossible not to love him. Honestly, it wasn't even Eliot's fault - how was he expected to spend every second of every day around such a beautiful, adorable, kind person without letting it get to him? And the sex. Well. That was fucking incendiary, which really wasn't helping his resolve in the love department.

20. Fragments

It was a perfectly normal morning in Fillory. Which, honestly, should have been Quentin's first warning that things were about to go very, very wrong. Fillory was many things, but normal was not one of them: Q had gotten used to being woken up by harried castle employees, alerting him to one catastrophe or another. The Serpent War had ended months ago, but the paperwork was still pouring in like it had never stopped. His official role in the government wasn't supposed to have anything to do with the war efforts, but it had been an all-hands-on-deck situation for the last year or so.

Oh my goodness, this took me back to almost my first story in this fandom! I have 22 Magicians fics posted, so that's almost all of them...

I think my favorite of all of these is Maybe This Time, just because I like starting off with such an iconic moment from canon. It's the kind of fic that I hope resonates with people differently upon a re-read, and I like the strong, instantly recognizable hook. You read that first line and you know where you are, but you have no real idea where the story is about to take you.

I've also had a lot of fun writing Julia in the Comet 'verse and I like her opening line to the first snippet I did for her!

Happy Halloween Scooby Doo! Review

Muahahhhahahhahahaha! Thanks to the Walmart tradition of stocking movies for sale weeks before the intended release date, I have myself a copy of what claims to be Scooby Doo’s FIRST Halloween adventure!

…in spite of movies like Witch’s Ghost and Goblin King, holiday specials like WNSD’s A Scooby Doo Halloween (which had a haunted Scarecrow too…), BCSD’s EL Bandito (for Dia de los Muertos - obvs not the same, but most companies act like it) and Halloween, The NSDM’s Halloween Hassle at Dracula’s Castle, and the DTV short film Scooby Doo and the Spooky Scarecrow (which, ironically enough, did NOT take the opportunity to feature Dr. Jonathan Crane).

So let us take a look now at Happy Halloween Scooby Doo! and see whether this film will be a graveyard smash of a treat, or a black licorice bomb of disappointment.

Full review (and SPOILERS TO GO WITH IT) are below the cut in my new review format; if all goes smoothly, I’ll go with this for future Scooby films.

WARNING: This review is very long.

One minor note before we begin: the Special Features actually include BCSD’s Halloween, WNSD’s A Scooby Doo Halloween, and PNSD’s Ghost Who’s Coming to Dinner

...so they were AWARE this was not the first Halloween adventure of the Scooby gang, and yet still use that tag line. Hm.

Still, kudos for including them - this’ll help boost the reasons to keep this movie, if it turns out to be a real Milk Dud of a movie *ba-dum tish* :D

The movie starts off rather abruptly, actually - no slow pan over the setting, just WB Animation credit and BOOM, we’ve cut to a Halloween parade and Elvira is talking.

I’m of a mixed opinion including Elvira on top of having Bill Nye and a Batman Rogue - while she most certainly fits the Scooby aesthetic, it doesn’t feel as grand an impact after her weird little cameo in Return to Zombie Island (ugh) and I’m not sure how well the movie will balance her in wait a minute

Did - did that parade float skeleton just sing Crystal Cove as the town’s name?

....also their song is terrible and they should feel terrible.

Welp, we finally get the opening credits! … with Jonathan Crane smashing through the Mystery Machine’s windshield, set to a slow poppy song straight from the 60s, and spewing the title of the film out in glittery pink mist.

All the while Scooby and Shaggy throw candy at each other, deliberately obtuse to the cloud of fear toxin enveloping their friends and the townsfolk, the steady destruction of the Mystery Machine they’re laying in as multiple cars crash into it and send it spiraling, and the general mayhem and destruction that Scarecrow is causing

Of course not. This is Shaggy and Scooby we’re talking about - I’m almost positive they can survive anything up to and including a nuclear bomb. This is child’s play to them.

So they “capture” Scarecrow… by pinning his cape to a tree with crossbow bolts.

And they do not try to at least tie up his arms or his hands in ANY capacity.

JUST the cape.

...you know, Velma, for a team with a “flawless” track record, you guys are making a hecking TON of mistakes in facing against one of Batman’s ROGUES GALLERY, ESPECIALLY with no Batman in sight, good freakin’ grief. 😩

Yaaaaaaaaas, this Scarecrow design is LUSH

He’s got the lank, the height, the BTAS costume colors, the elongated face with beaky nose and pointed chin and angular cheekbones, the eyebags like Gucci, the furrowed brow… honestly the only thing missing is the more reddish color hair, and even that isn’t mandatory. I love 😍

Not to mention the HOT DAYUM voice he has - low and velvet rough and so godsdamned particular in a way that could either tie in to obscuring a southern accent as in fanon or just as a stringent academic, oh my yes. He’s voiced by someone called Dwight Schultz, who’s most well known for playing Captain ‘Howling Mad’ Murdock in the OG A-Team show, and someone called Reginald Barclay in Star Trek TNG and Voyager, if any of y’all know that character in particular.

And of course, the first line he says is a delightfully wry “Oh, but I AM getting away with it,” with the sort of smirk that absolutely lends credence to why he’s a threat to Batman, and not some simpering wimp that can be defeated with some crossbow bolts in a tree.

I think I’m going to enjoy this movie at least somewhat, so long as we get to see him 🥰🥰🥰

(tho on a side note: Daphne why on EARTH are you trying to film Crane saying the meddling kids line? Do you have a video compilation of past villains who’ve done that, and you hope to add his to it? Was your phone damaged when you went up against the Riddler a few DTVs ago and you want a second shot at recording a Gotham Rogue saying it? Bc I don’t think a Gotham Rogue would be too pleased with seeing himself as a Mystery Meme on the Youtubes, you get what I’m saying?)

Okay, so the floating orb things are explained away as fear toxin bomb drones somehow… despite looking nothing like the other drones and being much smaller with no visible propulsion, while also flying unassisted through and around objects to explode against places once flung…

(tho interesting note, none of them are aimed directly at the crowds, just behind them - odd, that)

But how did he heckin’ FLY at the beginning?

Yeah, they show him wearing wrist-mounted grappling hooks at the end of the intro song sequence, but they are NOWHERE IN SIGHT at the beginning - and I do mean in sight, since he emerges against a backdrop of flames. There was nothing there (see the T-pose above for further evidence), and nothing there when he FLEW THROUGH THE MYSTERY MACHINE’S WINDSHIELD AND FLEW BACK OUT AGAIN. And these things are pale silver, which stands out like crazy against the darker backgrounds, so no hand-wavy ‘they were always being used’ bullcrap we’ve seen in other movies.

Hmmm *scribbles in notepad* note to self, add notation concerning Crack Theory A on magic!Shaggy to “Uncle Crane” theory files - evidence denotes that Crane is able to fly (or at least hover in mid-air unassisted) for terrorization purposes. May boost strength of CTA by family association, lending credence to magic inheritance along the bloodline...

“Avocado Toast Generation”? Crane, I honestly don’t know if you really mean that, or if you understand just how much that phrase gets under any Millennial/Gen Z kid’s skin. Having seen multiple variations of your character, it really could swing either way (tho kudos on the dead switch idea - very nice 👍🏻)

Although this does lead to an interesting stand-off: Fred, upon seeing the town threatened with 3 days worth of fear toxin, immediately moves to let Crane go, while Velma stops him and refuses to consider compromising if it means Crane escapes. They both look legitimately frustrated at the other for taking the stance they do.

Fascinating~

Crane honey, I don’t know if your drones are made of flash paper and hope, or if Scooby and Shaggy are using the reeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaally old candy (the stuff made about ~3 years ago most neighborhoods give out to the teenagers that knock around midnight on Halloween) to shoot them down, but either way you may wish to speak with the manufacturer about this

Then again, this IS Shaggy and Scooby - they probably could’ve spat marshmallows at the drones and brought them down with equal success and explosions

1. They still have Crane captured and now in handcuffs (despite having… you know… NOT been bound by anything except cross bolts in his curtain cape thing)

2. Dwight Schultz has decided to pitch his voice higher and more nasally than what he has. Hopefully this is more of an incredulous sort of pitch than something that sticks for the rest of the movie, ugh.

Also, I think they’re framing the movie to be more Velma-centric this time around - she’s the one explaining to Crane how they tracked him down, apparently through a piece of fan mail he sent Elvira (is that the only reason she’s there? Also why was Velma examining random pieces of fan mail for toxins, Elvira probs gets hundreds a week irl) and it looks like they’re framing something up on how fear isn’t something you can pretend isn’t there. neat!

So Crane ISN’T behind the Jackal Lanterns - in fact he’s outright befuddled by them. This means his whole spiel to Velma earlier about both of them being caught in the same trap was… metaphorical? The breakdown doesn’t actually go into WHY he thinks they’re in the same trap - Crane’s whole schtick is tied to accepting fear, not denying it, so why would they be the same?

Either way, someone is using both him and Mystery Inc to do something to Crystal Cove (please be Red Herring, please be Red Herring, please be Red Herring)

Actually, that reference at the beginning really WAS a red herring - they framed it as being Jon the whole time when it wasn’t. Kudos!

Additional kudos to having Jon be seen more out of mask than in - he is a looker, and I aim to look as much as I can ;)

And here we have another fascinating scene: Velma going to free Crane from his cell, as Daphne tells her to just leave him to die by pumpkin

I’m wondering if they meant to draw a parallel between the two here - Velma starts by reciting a nursery rhyme, then overcoming her fears in order to release madness to take control. It’s not done very cleanly - mainly bc we barely have any time with Crane in this movie - but I wonder if they meant to insinuate that Crane was like Velma once, where he refused to acknowledge he was afraid, which caused him to lose focus on his initial goals

Yet again, we find a Scooby movie that attempts character development, but with Velma

Unlike Shaggy’s Showdown however, I’m mixed on how successful it is.

For starters, Velma hasn’t been this cocksure in other DTVs we’ve seen, so it’s a bit odd to see it now. While not 100% out of place - after all, the gang DID capture one of Batman’s Rogues Gallery on their own - it still feels a touch forced. Compare that to Shaggy’s Showdown, where Shaggy has ALWAYS been a coward (one that, in more recent years, writers have had willing to abandon his friends for safety), so the character development there feels more natural.

The progression of events with Velma actually work somewhat okay - but again, here’s where past DTVs come to bite them in the ass. The past handful have had the gang be wrong, have had them fail, or catch the wrong guy. This makes Velma’s attitude here at odds with the other films, something that sticks more due to a character that’s appeared in the past few films as a minor inconvenience - a Sheriff who keeps telling the gang not to interfere, they’re doing things wrong, etc. If this had been a character who was completely wrong in the past AND SHOWN TO BE WRONG FOR HIS OPINIONS, while the gang never guessed wrong, this would work much better. Unfortunately, it doesn’t, and here we are.

I think it would have flowed better if Velma’s cockiness came solely from catching Crane on their own. Have a random cop character or reporter or whatever (just not the recurring cop), insinuate that the gang is in too deep with Scarecrow, that he should be handled by the adults or professionals or whatever. Velma could bristle, overcompensate, and THEN fall from her pedestal like we see, reach out to the gang and commiserate over feeling scared, and grow. Again, it’s not too far to reach for, but they handle it poorly; as a result, the outcome feels a little more shoehorned in.

It’s an honest shame, bc we haven’t had a Velma centered story since Frankencreepy, and we all remember what a hideous fcuking mess THAT was *shudders*. Still, it somewhat gets its point across, I guess.

Literally, they actually followed her into her head telepathically, and show her their memories of things she hasn’t gotten to see tonight (while also possibly enhancing her ability to remember things, given how much DETAIL she captures perfectly of things that she would maybe have glimpsed in a millisecond AT MOST)

Velma just admitted her fears and jumped into the mouth of the Mega Pumpkin, before getting Fred to use the app from earlier to shut it down, revealing it to be a giant drone surrounded by smaller pumpkin drones

This feels… counterintuitive, but I’ll try to explain at the end

I’ll admit it

The Whodunnit is actually pretty decent in concept

There was a sprinkling of tidbits that could be assembled for the final conclusion and still make a decent amount of sense, all to find the sheriff doing it

Only he isn’t a sheriff

He’s a former Tech CEO who was also busted by the gang years ago in a case the Sheriff kept bringing up throughout the movie - due to his prison sentence, he lost more than half his wealth and the opportunity to expand it further with the Crystal Cove Lithium deposits

He was also someone who sold tech to Crane for his fear toxin distribution, where he got the idea to frame him for it

(tho on a side note, Crane is an absolute dork and a terrible liar - just look at the email he sent XD and that profile pic, my gods)

He deliberately picked at the gang for the past few DTVs (specifically 2: Return to Zombie Island and Curse of the 13th Ghost) to fracture their confidence, undermine them, etc - all so that in one fell swoop, he could retake his fortune, frighten everyone in town away from the mines so they couldn’t interfere, frighten away the gang (while also ruining their reputation as mystery solvers), and take Crane off the docket so he couldn’t identify the CEO when he pretended to be the sheriff

This… is actually a pretty damn good plan, for a Scooby villain. He was patient, manipulative, and clever, learning how best to tie up loose ends and win back what he lost. A clever revenge story that came so close to coming to fruition, and could have honestly been sold convincingly…

...if it hadn’t been done so much better in Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.

Yeeeaaaah, this movie basically lifts the rough framework up from that one - past mystery villain comes back to attack the gang and ruin their reputation (tho this one decides to also make his fortune back and tie up loose ends with former criminal contacts, a la Crane). Gang is embarrassed in front of the news folk, another villain is framed for it (like Old Man Wickles of the Black Knight fame), and the gang must reconcile to foil the villain for good.

Although it also??? Merges elements of Frankencreepy in it?? The movie is focused on Velma, who is struggling to admit when she’s wrong (which ties into her fear, somehow… I’ll think on that point a little) and things purportedly go haywire when she won’t bend. This… isn’t illustrated as well here, since there’s very little direct cause-and-effect from Velma’s actions that would prove this point - that insisting her way is the right, best, and therefore only way to go ends up making things worse.

As much as I despised Frankencreepy (and I DESPISED IT), it did do that part well - showing that refusing to budge on something can lead to you hurting your friends (literally, in that one), and that admitting you were wrong and need help isn’t the end of the world.

(that movie also had former villains returning to gain vengeance upon the gang using psychological warfare, hm - may need to go over that one again, unfortunately).

It’s a shame, too - the basic elements for this plot are all here, they just need to be polished and reworked a bit to make a really fascinating movie.

Anyways, back to the asshat CEO who just… faked being a sheriff. Because white people can get away with that so long as they have the outfit and the car *throws up hands* (the sad part is this is probably something that actually happens)

As he drives away we see a familiar silhouette looming in the cornfields, watching him approach

Velma had Bill Nye on speaker, so he could record the entire confession for the federal officers nearby (who were taking Scarecrow back to Arkham), and track the phone signal to his exact location

And right as his holographic call cuts out, we see the shadow of a Scarecrow looming over him, causing him to scream.

When the feds arrive at his final location, both his body and the money have vanished. The car still sits, engine running, before the crows leering over him from the field vanish into the sky.

Now that he’s dead, the gang walks and finds themselves at a Halloween party, with friendly faces and good food. The mystery is solved, though the culprit may never be found again.

Then Daphne admits to NOT trying to steal Elvira’s costume for Halloween, but instead trying to steal Elvira’s identity and replace her.

Something that she’s apparently nearly gotten away with on past mysteries working with Phillis Diller

*sighs* movie, why couldn’t you just stick to the costume schtick? This is just… so much worse.

From there, Elvira walks off to wrap things up, reveal the monster face on the back of her head sans wig (which was also a monkey), and start the credits, where we see the gang working to bring the Mystery Machine back to its former glory a la Frankenstein pastiche.

This movie… this movie is a hot mess, but at least it’s an OKAY hot mess.

It really does feel like someone started writing a decent Velma-focused movie concerning the Scarecrow and a past Mystery Inc villain interfering, but was bogged down by notes from higher-ups: Wait! Write in Elvira! Also write in Bill Nye! Hey, let’s have a Mad Max car chase with the Jackal Lanterns! And have Daphne obsessed with literally becoming Elvira! Also make reference to things that we’ll insist be explained this way instead of a way that makes sense! Great!

(seriously tho, we never find out who Crane cares about most that reminds him of Velma, what the heck?)

It’s like two or three different scripts were smooshed together without being cleaned up - stuff is said that doesn’t get resolved, the celebrity guests don’t get to breathe much and feel squished together, and the build-up for the villain feels… less impactful, even knowing that he’s been in the past two films.

It might have worked if he’d been in… let’s say like 5 or 6 DTVs in a row, speaking roles for dissing the gang growing in each (ex start with “Good job kids! But maybe next time, leave it to the professionals, okay?” and growing more bitter from there), but only 2 feels kind of meh. Still, I do appreciate the clues we got to collect together, and they all work in the final breakdown of the scheme - some DTVs can feel like they pull stuff completely out of nowhere, so kudos there.

I appreciate what they wanted to do with Velma - give her a character development arc similar to Shaggy’s in Shaggy’s Showdown. Unfortunately, it wasn’t set up quite so neatly: they blended her ‘refusal to admit fear’ with her overconfidence that she was always right, and it led to a weird conclusion. To face her fears, she leapt into the Giant Pumpkin, which… proved that she was right all along about it being fake, and that solves things somehow. It doesn’t address how she can get something wrong sometimes, it doesn’t really address what she’s afraid of (which is honestly quite good: she’s afraid of failing in a way that allows bad guys to escape justice and in a way that hurts her friends), it’s just a bit of a mess. Points for aiming the focus the right way (and in a way that DOESN’T sexualize the underage teenage girl, unlike some DTVs cough cough Frankencreepy cough cough), but it’s very very messy how it goes about it.

The movie actually balanced pretty well for the whole gang - no excessive focus on one leaving the rest in the dust (too much at least - Fred was a touch underdeveloped, but nowhere near as annoying as past iterations have been. Shaggy and Scooby were kind of meh in some places but great in others, while Daphne was just odd. I think they were trying to recapture the BCSD Daphne characterization, but they failed. Still, she did spend some good time kicking ass with the pumpkins, so that was fun.

Now for the Rogue, Jonathan Crane. If you like Crane, this movie gives you: maniacal Scarecrow, calm and creepy Crane, a brief glimpse at fanboy!Crane (he admits in his own awkward way that he’s a fan of Elvira, and later tells her he loves her work - it’s fun), and (best of all for me) a heroic Crane - one who helps the protagonists and ends up kicking ass pretty damn well, brief as it was. And while DILF Crane is always a treat, he feels underutilized in this. In comparison, Scooby Doo/Batman Brave and the Bold really utilized a lot of different aspects of Riddler, to the point he actually does feel pretty menacing by the third act. It’s a shame we don’t quite get that with Crane, but I do love seeing him 1. More out of mask, and 2. Acting as a good guy (in his own way), so he’s enjoyable on the whole.

I kind of wish that the whole movie was spent more with Crane, but again, the script is a bit of a mess on this part - the fact that he’s not completely screwed over is a goddamn miracle.

Elvira was… okay. She didn’t have much of a purpose beyond getting the plot started and giving Daphne some hooks to play off of. Bill Nye (abrupt as his introduction was) did provide some necessary elements to the mystery, as well as the tech; he wasn’t too bad by the end. (still a touch bitter we didn’t get ex roommate Nye, but hey, what can you do)

Humor was… mixed. Some good, some meh, but very few long enough to feel painful. Some bits felt extraneous at times, but they did help to build to the conclusion, so points for effort.

At the end of the day though, I’m probably keeping this more for Jonathan Crane than anyone else. It does have a lot of fanfic potential tho 🤔🤔🤔

Hello moonbeams~! Writing letters is something I’m good at, because even if I stumble in all other forms of communication sometimes, my writing, my words never fail me. The overall negative energy, annoyance and sometimes hatred towards the pandemic, the social/political topics and the year in general can be very draining and or taxing on me and you all. Of course we’re upset too but seeing so much hate can be draining for people like me, and maybe you. So for a moment, grab a seat and a blanket and listen as I read this letter to you. This is a letter from me, to you, and I offer a blessing from her majesty the moon herself as well.

2020 has been one hell of a year that’s for sure. I experienced a lot of sadness, fatigue and overall lower moods as I tend to take on the energy of the world heavily. There has been so much that’s happened to us all, sadness, fear, anger, heartbreak; but even still we survived it. There were so many that felt we wouldn’t make it through this year or make it to the end as it felt like it would go on forever, but we’re here now, to write these letters, to tell these stories.

Even in this hectic year, I experienced so much, I felt happiness, joy I cried a lot and released so many pent up feelings, I came to terms with things I had locked away, I laughed a lot, I found passions that I thought were long lost. So much has happened to me in this year both ups and downs and I’m grateful for it all. You may be wondering why I would be grateful for downs as well, they helped teach me things, how strong I am; how it’s okay to give in and feel your sadness or pain; to validate my emotions; and a lot more. I hope that with all that’s happened you were able to take in some lessons yourself.

Below this cut, I wanted to thank some people who made my experience on tumblr as wonderful as it has been, more amazing than I had ever expected it to be. I came on here extremely nervous about sharing my stories and these people have been so warm and welcoming and honestly I wouldn’t have enjoyed my time as much without them. I’ll have my ending message at the bottom of this.

@sleepylixie Lily darling, my brain twin!! you’ve made my short tumblr life so much fun! sharing brain waves one moment, soundboarding ideas the next, and having so many things in common between us it’s crazy (wolfie gang). I know I say it a million times but since this is a wrapup letter I’ll share it again shortly. My blog was made for the main purpose of learning to appreciate my passion for writing and to not cage myself from posting and sharing my stories. I wanted to learn to write for myself and that posting stories in and of itself was the main victory, and everything else was the bonus, instead of thinking when people like it, only then is it good. I’ve done that before and having learned from it I now feel more prepared to tackle this. Thank you again for all the warm welcomes and the love I’ve received it still hasn’t quite sunk in for me and it feels so unreal. To know you all enjoy my stories and give me so much love, it’s crazy and it’s happening and I am so happy. I’m very thankful I took the leap of faith even though I was scared and decided to create this blog! 2020 challeneged me as well as pushed me and supported me. I experienced hard times yes, but I also experienced some really amazing things. I found comfort in things new and old, I feel like the quarantine made me come to terms with myself more, not run from things I wanted to confront and talk to myself more. I feel like 2020 albeit really draining in all ways, helped shape me and I got stronger because of living through this year. Now before I get any more preach-y than I already have LOL Thank you for being a part of my 2020 everyone!! I hope to have you with me in 2021 and I hope you experience the blessings of the moon like I feel we all do. See you in 2021 y’all!
