Because a friend told me she never knows what to write and then never comments, but wants to learn how to do better, I thought I’d compile a list, and maybe it will help someone else as well!

As always, this is unofficial and just from my personal experience writing and reading fic, and talking with other fic authors.

What to comment

Honestly, authors love friendly comments, no matter how small. Here are some ideas for short comments you can write to pretty much any fic you enjoyed:

If you want to write something a bit longer, you can for example

Tell the author where you have been reading the fic or what you were doing while reading it

Tell the author what you should have been doing instead of reading fanfic (and that it was worth it to read the fic)

Copy a passage (or several) from the fic you particularly enjoyed

Did the author write a note at the end or beginning of the fic? Maybe even ask a question? Sometimes you can reply to author’s notes in your comment

How did the fic make you feel? Happy, made you cry, made you laugh, made you jealous of a character, or made you want to punch an antagonistic character’s nose in? Write it in the comment!

Is it your first fic in a fandom or with a ship? Your favorite fic in a fandom, or with a specific character? Did you read it in one go? Did you savour it slowly reading over days or weeks? Have you enjoyed every update of a multi-chapter? Do you wish you could read it again for the first time? Write anything you want to let the author know about your reading experience!

Is there a character you particularly enjoyed in that fic/chapter? Tell the author you think they wrote xy character really well!

You can always start or finish your comment with one of the suggestions from the short comments to make sure the author knows you liked it :)

If you really don’t know what to write, or are reading fic in a language not your own (though authors usually don’t mind you commenting in your native language) and aren’t comfortable commenting in either language, you can also leave emojis as comments, for example variations of:

Don’ts

There isn’t much you can do wrong when writing comments on fic, but there are a few things you should keep in mind:

don’t criticize (unless negative critics/what they can do better has been specifically asked for by the author, and then stick to the kind of criticism asked for, and best try to include something positive too to soften the blow)

don’t demand more/ask for updates - you can tell the author you’d read it if they wrote more, but don’t put pressure on them, you don’t know what’s happening in their lives right now and for what reason new entries might have slowed down, and they don’t owe you regular or any updates!

don’t tell them what to write (unless the author is taking prompts, and in most cases the comment section is not the right place for prompts, check what the author specified)

Remember: Fan fiction are free, from fans for fans, so etiquette is a bit different than in the Amazon reviews of books you paid good money for! Fic authors don’t have to cater to you, just enjoy that there are fics shared with the fandom :) If you don’t like something, or don’t like a part of something, either close the tab or quietly ignore the issue and just enjoy the parts you do like.

And in general, to end this on a positive note:

Yes, you can comment on older fanfics!

Yes, comment on several fics in a row if you’re reading through fics by one author!

Yes, comment on as many chapters of the same fic as you like!

Yes, you can make art for the fic and tell the author about it!

Yes, absolutely tell the author if you’re still thinking about a fic hours/days/years… after reading it!

Yes, send authors asks on tumblr/other sites talking about how you love their fics, if they link these sites in the author’s notes! (But also comment on Ao3)

Yes, you can comment/review even if you don’t have an account (at least on Ao3 and ffnet)!

Yes, please let the author know if you’re reading a fic for a second time, even if you just write ‘re-read kudos!’

The best comments are also written directly on the site the fanfiction got posted on (so usually ao3/ffnet and not tumblr/discord), both because it makes the note count higher, and because then the comment won’t quickly get buried under unrelated messages or posts.

If you want to leave long comments about different parts of a fic or chapter, you can also make use of the floating Ao3 comment box! It allows you to type your comment while you're still reading, without having to leave the page!

"Meow meow mf" is an extremely specific character type that the majority of my top faves, including Kiara, fall under.

I named it myself cuz it's the no. 1 Sen-core character type

Meow Meow Mf: Morally Bankrupt and/or Morally Questionable Evil, (Optional: Black and White colour scheme), has sadistic and bloodthirsty tendencies, has emotional issues, is distanced from humanity and/or human social interactions in some way (estranged from normal people due to their childhood upbringing, or being non-human or divine, etc.) which gives their ego this "Sen-core quality"

I think the qualities of their arrogance and ego are what defines them as Meow Meow Mf.

My fave charas often operate on "Evil/Shadow/Darkness" or Yin/Yang and Light/Darkness principles (usually embodying one of, or both aspects)

I do believe I've never bothered to make a set of rules and how I typically go about with ships when they do happen, so here we go. I will be attaching this to Alexander's official shipping page here If any of my current partners need to discuss matters with me regarding our ship, please reach out. Communication regarding these things is important to me.

⚠️Age Requirement: Both mun and muse must be 21+ years or older to ship with Alexander. ⚠️Pronouns and Identity: Alexander uses he/him pronouns. He is a cisgender male and pansexual and AMAB.

���Chemistry-Based Ships: All ships with Alexander must develop organically through chemistry, similar to real relationships. Time in these ships may pass faster than usual. Pre-established ships are not preferred.

💕Multi-Ship Organization: Alexander is a multi-ship character, and I organize them into separate verses, including open ones.

💍Marriage and Family: Marriage and starting a family with Alexander is a slow burn process that depends on chemistry and careful planning and my mood for it. Alexander is using a magical equivalent of birth control by default to avoid unplanned children. Your muse cannot get pregnant if my muse is negating that on his end. I know this is all fantasy but at some point things need to make some sense.

��Co-Planning Children: If our characters have children, it is important for both muns to plan the child together, including aspects such as gender, name, and looks. A 50/50 approach is fair. While it's possible to make it to this stage with Alex I'm very very more than likely not down to entertain them for personal reasons.

🔞Smut: Lastly, smut with Alexander is 100% fine with his partners when and if it ever comes to pass. He is also open to situational encounters with none partners as well but it depends and he has to at least know your character on some level. He will not always say yes either, respect that. Explicit ventures are entertained here on his sin blog.

5 seasons. so many characters. so many losses. we have never seen this much emotion from anyone. i can hardly joke right now but he really embodied "don't you just wanna go apeshit?" i consume so much fucking media and this is new even for me. callum has never even had a temper. through all of this--getting kidnapped, abused, mentally and physically, seeing what his friends are going through--he hasn't broke. and then, seeing his biggest fear, the thing he's been plagued with for years, the thing we've seen him throw away his life to prevent, comes true, and he loses it. the scream, grunt & inhale, the speed, the aggression, the fucking expression. it's not hard to see how what happened next happened, i'm surprised he didn't do worse.

his defeat. we know this is because of... literally everything he has ever stood for being demolished. but his personal moral catastrophe aside, don't you find it interesting how he did all of that to keep rayla safe, and yet he never once went to her? i made another post abt this but i'm saying it again: rayla told him not to. and she believed in him. she's safe, but i don't think he thought he really saved her. he doesn't think he deserves anything she's giving him. he refuses to indulge in her, he refuses to confide in her, he refuses to seek her out. but he just saved her life. but that's not enough. not enough to resolve this within himself, and apparently not enough for the girl who's life he has saved twice now, who has stuck by him for years, who has dedicated everything to him, to be able to be okay with it. and he just kind of... accepts it. he doesn't beg for forgiveness, that being said he doesn't tell her either. this may seem like he's protecting himself, that he really just doesn't want to lose her, that he doesn't want to face this at all, but maybe it's him not wanting to disappoint her. yknow i really hate to be one of those people who ignores how basically all of callum's character surrounds his own internal conflict in favor of rayllum fan service, but fuck it's hard no to sometimes. he wants to be her hero, but he isn't; not to himself, anyway. this would always be the case. and yet... he did it all anyway. if that isn't unconditional, i'm jumping off a bridge.

as for the comprehensive exams, i barely studied because i have, what i suspect to be, ✨undiagnosed adhd✨ i passed one of them but the other one (which is a really stupid test in itself tbh. everyone was really pissed at that one bc it doesn’t really evaluate anything) was a hard fail😂 im not too stressed because i have a shot during next semester to pass it.

After centuries upon centuries of solitude, Andrei finally found the perfect half who can handle his worst while also recognizing his best, all while showing him that it's alright to put his guard down every now and then- that cracking a warm smile doesn't diminish his sinister nature.

As for Gretchen, she's found the perfect mentor in Andrei, despite all their squabbles, she does look up to him and tries her best to accept that the path to gaining respect is treacherous with little to no shortcuts in her situation. Her turning over to the Sabbat toughened her, hardened her heart while simultaneously teaching her how to work harmoniously with her pack. The whole trial was a catalyst to her being reshaped into a weapon of destruction that was on a quest for power, validation and freedom. With great patience Andrei helped forge Gretchen into the weapon that she wanted to be. Though she did shed pretty much most layers of her "human side", her rather lighthearted nature couldn't be purged (not that Andrei would actually want to get rid of it anyway). She achieved tremendous growth and maturity as a vampire thanks to him and his centuries worth of experience. And exactly through him, she found the liberty she was looking for and so much more: love, respect, self-improvement, partnership and she couldn't ask for anything else.
